Daughter Reveals Pregnancy News Hundreds Of Times To Mother With Alzheimer's

When Setsuko Harmon was in her early 70s, the doctors told her that she wouldn’t live for more than six months. She had stage 4 colon cancer. Her husband, Bob, dropped everything to care for his beloved wife.

Doctors recommended chemo solely for quality of life; it was not intended as a cure in a case that should have been fatal. But after two years of chemo treatments, Setsuko’s tests came up empty. She was cancer free.

Attitude is everything, they say. The Harmons’ adult daughter, Christine Stone, believes that it was her mom’s endless optimism that saw her through to health. “She just always had such a good attitude and was smiling like nothing was wrong,” Stone told People magazine. “Because to her it wasn’t.”

Setsuko never knew that she was in treatment for cancer. Or, if she did, she quickly forgot. Setsuko, you see, is in the middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

“She knew she didn’t feel good and that she was losing her hair, but she didn’t understand that she was sick because of the Alzheimer’s,” Stone said. “And I actually think that really helped her recover.”

Dementia can be hell on patients and their families. It’s torture to watch a parent’s mind slowly fading into the ether. But sometimes—as in Setsuko’s victory over cancer—Alzheimer’s can establish conditions for wonderful outcomes, too. Stone really realized that when she got pregnant.

Stone is a 38-year-old office manager who lives with her husband in Florence, South Carolina. They were overjoyed when they learned they were expecting a child. She couldn’t wait to tell her mom.

Setsuko is thrilled at the idea of becoming a grandmother. And she’s thrilled again each time Stone tells her the news.

“I can tell her and two to five minutes later she won’t remember,” Stone said. “It’s like watching a kid at Christmas wake up and see his presents over and over again, because each time she gets so excited… When I give her the pregnancy news she claps and smiles each time and asks which month the baby is due. It’s very bittersweet.”

HealthyWay

Bittersweet is just the word. Setsuko‘s journey through Alzheimer’s disease has been harrowing for her entire family. Fortunately, her bright spirit and positive attitude remain intact—even if her husband of many years has to face daily reminders that his wife is slowly drifting away.

“They are still very much in love,” Stone said, describing her parents’ relationship. “So it’s been really hard on my dad to see her when she puts things from the refrigerator into cabinets and they spoil or she pulls open every drawer in the house.”

HealthyWay
People

There’s still so much to look forward to for Stone and her parents. Soon her baby will arrive. Stone lives for the day that she presents her mother with a sweet grandchild.

“I expect her not to remember her, but I know when my mom meets my daughter she’s going to get excited every single time,” Stone said. “It’s sad, but it’s not sad, because she will be just as excited to meet her over and over again.”

6 Signs You're Eating Too Much Sugar

Some people think it’s only important for people with diabetes to monitor their sugar intake. In reality, everyone should be careful just how much sugar they’re consuming.

Many foods have hidden sugar, pushing us far over the daily recommended intake without us realizing it. Fortunately, your body will give you some warning signs that you’re eating too much sugar. Here are a few of those signs.

1. Frequent Urination

If you have to take constant bathroom breaks, that may be a sign that you are eating too much sugar. That’s because of the impact sugar can have on your kidneys and their ability to process fluids.

HealthyWay

When blood sugar is too high, the kidneys can’t absorb fluid, so they push the excess out via urination. Keep an eye on this, especially if you’re waking up during the night to use the bathroom.

2. Constant Sugar Cravings

Many of us have a sweet tooth that compels us to eat something sugary. While that’s fine once in a while, it’s a problem if it’s become a routine. Constant cravings are a sign that you are eating too much sugar.

HealthyWay

The more sugar you eat, the more you’ll want it. This is because sugar works in your body similar to a drug. It provides an energy burst, then a crash, then a craving to get that feeling again.

3. Weight Gain

Sugar is packed with calories, and because it has no fiber or protein, it doesn’t make you feel full. That’s why it’s so easy to binge on candy and other sugary snacks.

HealthyWay

The body tries to convert that sugar to energy for the organs, but it can only burn so much. The rest is stored as fat to be burned later. If you notice you are gaining weight, it may be related to the amount of sugar you’re eating.

4. Acne

Acne happens to many people during their teenage years because our hormones are going through many changes. When we eat sugar, our body goes through similar hormonal changes that can result in acne.

That’s because of the insulin our body produces when we eat sugar. That causes a cascade effect with our hormones that can ultimately lead to acne. For those especially sensitive to these changes, eating sugar is a sure-fire way to get zits.

5. Mood Swings

When someone is coming down from a sugar high, they may be a bit short with people. That’s because this crash makes us feel tired and sluggish—and more prone to snap at minor annoyances.

HealthyWay

If you find yourself losing your temper with friends or family for no reason, it may be time to cut back on the sugar.

6. Cavities

Our saliva does a pretty good job of keeping bacteria off of our teeth. When we eat sugar, we throw off the pH balance of our saliva and it doesn’t do its job as well.

HealthyWay

This pH imbalance means that bacteria grows and thrives, which can ultimately lead to cavities. If you have tooth pain or issues with your gums, it may be related to the amount of sugar you’re eating.

Mom Gives Birth To A 13.5 Pound Baby Girl, And Her Photos Became An Internet Sensation

In Greek mythology, the goddess Athena emerged from the head of her father, Zeus. She was fully grown and clad in armor. We’re surprised that one Florida family didn’t consider Athena as a name for their new baby daughter.

“It looked like they pulled a toddler out of my belly,” proud mom Chrissy Corbitt told ABC News after the birth. “She’s so big.”

HealthyWay
ABC News

Chrissy and her husband, Larry Corbitt, live in Keystone Heights, Florida, with their four kids. As of May 15, 2017, make that five kids—and what a kid this latest turned out to be!

Baby Carleigh (not Athena, alas) was born at Orange Park Medical Center, and at first, Chrissy couldn’t understand why all the doctors and nurses were so excited.

HealthyWay
Christine Corbitt via ABC News

“When the doctor was pulling her out of me I just started hearing them all laughing and excited in the operating room,” Chrissy said. “They were throwing out numbers and when they showed her to me and said ‘13.5,’ I couldn’t believe it.”

That number—13.5—refers to the infant’s incredible weight.

The average weight for an infant with Carleigh’s background is just 7.7 pounds. Only 5 percent of newborns end up outside of the “normal” range, which is between 5.5 and 11 pounds.

A 13.5 pound baby is nearly unheard of. Still, the Corbitts are truly enjoying their big bundle of joy. They’re not alone.

Once Chrissy had recovered from her C-section, the family brought baby Carleigh to Sweet Smiles Photography Studio. There, photographer Debbye Benson immortalized the infant with adorable pictures that quickly blazed a path through social media.

“I’m so happy I was able to meet and hold this mini celebrity,” read one social media post from Sweet Smiles. “She was such a perfect model during our session—so gorgeous and squishy!”

Despite their newfound fame, the Corbitts know that it’s not going to be easy to raise this little goddess.

She isn’t easy on the back. Also, as the Corbitts discovered on day one, finding baby clothes has been a challenge.

“She’s like a 6-month-old baby,” Larry told ABC News. “We even contacted Pampers and Huggies to help us out because everything we got to prepare is just out the door. None of it fits. She’s in size 3 diapers. The clothes she had on yesterday was a 9-month outfit.”

HealthyWay

Then the proud father said something simple and profound that sums up the miracle of this newborn. “She’s huge,” he said.

Meanwhile, we can all enjoy the pictures of this cuddly cutie.

“She’s just filled with rolls,” Chrissy said. “She’s just a big squishy baby. She’s so adorable.” The family is getting used to baby Carleigh’s fame, although they’re a bit surprised by it.

HealthyWay

“I had no idea she was going to be so popular,” the beaming mom said. “It’s been a great experience and I can’t wait to look back on this and share it with her to show her she became a celebrity overnight.” That’s just one more thing that Carleigh has in common with the mythical Athena.

5 Health Problems The Moons Of Your Nails Can Warn You About

Many people pay little attention to the little white moons on their fingernails. That’s unfortunate, because these white moons, called lunulae, actually contain some insight into your overall health. If you notice some strange things going on with your fingernails, here’s what those things could mean.

1. Overly large lunulae could be a sign of cardiovascular trouble.

These little white moons should take up just less than a third of your fingernails. If you notice they are taking up more space than that, it could be a sign of cardiovascular trouble or an issue with low blood pressure.
HealthyWay
If you’re an athlete or someone who is very physically active, it’s not uncommon to have lunulae that are larger than normal. If you’re not someone in particularly good shape, there could be a problem with your blood pressure. This could also be a sign that you are overly stressed out.

2. Smaller-than-normal lunulae could be a sign of a vitamin deficiency.

If your lunulae are too small, that’s also a sign that something is off in your body. If you can barely see the lunula near your cuticle, you could be lacking B12 and iron. This can also be a sign that you have a weak immune system or a problem with your leukocyte production.
HealthyWay
Another health problem is indicated when the lunula separates from the rest of the nail plate with transverse lines. This could be a problem with your blood sugar levels and may be an early warning sign of diabetes. Talk to your doctor to have your blood sugar checked right away.

3. Gray lunulae could be a sign of several problems.

Your lunulae should always be a distinct white. If they suddenly appear gray, this could actually be a warning sign of several different issues.
HealthyWay
The most serious issue that could cause gray lunulae are problems with nutrient absorption. This could be caused by a problem in the digestive system. Sometimes, however, it’s just a sign of extreme fatigue. If you notice gray lunulae after putting in long hours at work, try to find some time to relax.

4. Purple lunulae could be a sign of circulation problems.

If your lunulae are purple or blue, that’s a sign that your body is having trouble getting blood to the extremities. This is turning your lunulae purple because they lack oxygen.
HealthyWay
You should talk to your doctor right away about this, especially if you experience dizziness or feel lightheaded. There could be something wrong with your circulatory system or your heart that needs to be corrected immediately.

5. Black lunulae are a sign that you need to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Your lunulae should never appear black. If they do, it’s a sign that there’s something seriously wrong in your body. Go to your doctor or head to the emergency room to have some testing done.
HealthyWay
Black lunulae can be a sign that a person has experienced heavy metal poisoning. The most common types include poisoning by lead, mercury, arsenic, or cadmium. If left untreated, this poisoning could prove fatal.

7 Tricks Athletes Use To Get The Perfect Night's Sleep

Sleeping well can be as valuable to an athlete as eating right and finding the right training regimen. The secret to getting good sleep is all about planning, preparation, and practice.

1. Prepare your bedroom.

Get drapes that block out street lights, put your blinking devices out of sight, and hide the glowing numbers on your alarm clock. Your body interprets these lights as a signal to stop producing melatonin, which is a key hormone that helps you sleep.

HealthyWay

Set your bedroom temperature somewhere between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Your body likes sleeping in a cool, comfortable environment.

2. Avoid caffeine in the evening.

Don’t drink coffee or any other stimulant-enhanced drinks during the four hours before your bedtime (we’ll get to that next).

HealthyWay

Some people need even more time without caffeine; if you’re having a hard time falling asleep, set a stop time for caffeine ingestion and see if you notice a difference.

3. Have a regular bedtime.

We are creatures of habit. With time and regular practice, your body will grow accustomed to a routine and will naturally start to prepare itself for sleep. Do your best to stick to a consistent schedule.

4. Develop a routine for getting ready for bed..

“Have a power-down routine each evening before bed,” writes Olivier Poirier-Leroy for YourWorkoutBook. “From an hour or half hour out from when you want to be asleep plot out the things you will do each evening before zonking out. Brush teeth. Read for twenty minutes. Prep clothes for the following day.

HealthyWay

“Write in your journal. And so on. Doing this regularly will draw a clear connection in your mind and prime your body for a proper night’s rest. This will come especially handy when you are traveling and sleeping in a new environment. The routine will give you a sense of familiarity in the foreign.”

Make avoiding screens a part of that bedtime routine, too. The blue light that emanates from most electronic devices really throws the body’s melatonin production for a loop.

5. The bedroom is for sleeping.

You bedroom is your sleeping sanctuary. You can also…you know…in there, but keep it to those two things. Your body will come to recognize your sleep space and will quickly get into sleep mode if that’s all the space is being used for.

HealthyWay

If you’re also doing work, watching television, eating, or surfing the net while you’re in bed, you’re sending mixed signals to your body. Don’t do that to yourself.

6. Refuse to use the snooze button.

Your body sleeps in cycles that last for more than an hour. When your alarm clock initially wakes you up, it cuts off the previous cycle, whether you got the full benefit of it or not. When you fall back asleep you’re telling your body that you’re starting a new sleep cycle, which can make you feel sluggish for hours.

HealthyWay

Besides, having a consistent wake-up time is just as important as having a regular bedtime. By being consistent with your wake-up time, you can do a better job of homing in on the perfect bedtime.

7. Be cautious with naps

When you’re feeling tired and drowsy during the day, it can be very tempting to take a nap to give yourself an energy boost. You have to recognize that naps can affect your regular evening sleep routine.

If you are following the above recommendations and your body still seems to be telling you that you need more sleep, experiment with napping. If you go down this road, though, do your best to make naps either very rare or a regular part of your routine.

6 Ways To Tell You're Pregnant Before You Take The Test

When a woman is pregnant, her body will send her signals long before she ever takes a pregnancy test or misses a period. If you’re looking to become a mother—or just want to know what’s going on with your body—here are some signs that you may be pregnant.

1) Your favorite jeans have suddenly stopped fitting.

The first sign many women have that they are pregnant is that they are struggling to button pants that they wore just a couple of days earlier. That’s because pregnancy can cause immediate bloating.

HealthyWay

Your hormones will kick into overdrive right away, leading to extra bloating of your abdomen. If you’re bloated and can’t figure out why, it may be due to pregnancy.

2) You have intense food cravings.

Everybody has food cravings from time to time, but if you feel like you need a cheeseburger or some other random food NOW, that could be because you’re pregnant. This is especially true if you wake up during the night with these cravings.

HealthyWay

The flip side of this is that when you’re pregnant, your favorite foods may make you feel queasy. If you’ve just noticed a general weirdness about food, it may be related to hormone changes caused by pregnancy.

3) You’ve been nauseated and it doesn’t seem to be getting better.

Many women experience nausea in the first trimester of pregnancy. This typically happens in the morning but can happen throughout the day. Many women just chalk it up to a stomach bug at first.

HealthyWay

If you’ve felt nauseated and it hasn’t gotten any better after a few days, that could be a sign that you’re pregnant.

4) You’re extremely emotional over minor things.

Your hormonal changes will cause you to get emotional over strange things or to flip out over minor inconveniences. If you find yourself crying at that rental car commercial or flipping out at your partner for no reason, that could be because you’re pregnant.

HealthyWay

Mood swings are a perfectly normal part of pregnancy. They’ll happen throughout the nine months but can be especially pronounced right in the beginning.

5) You’re having cramps but no period.

Every woman knows how awful period cramps can be. Being pregnant results in similar cramps but without a period.

HealthyWay

If you’re feeling cramping but it’s not your time of the month, that’s a sign that you’re pregnant. You may also experience spotting with the cramping, which is a sign of pregnancy if it’s not on your cycle.

6) You fall asleep watching your favorite shows.

Women are notorious for falling asleep during certain movies or TV shows, but most would never fall asleep during the show they’ve been waiting all week to watch. If you can’t keep your eyes open even though you’ve been dying to see what happens on How to Get Away With Murder, you may be pregnant.

HealthyWay

That’s because the fetus growing inside your womb is sucking up a lot of your energy. Being tired all the time is just a part of being pregnant, so be prepared to deal with nine months of falling asleep on the couch.

5 Weight Loss Secrets No One But Nutritionists Know

Almost everyone wants to lose some weight, but most of us don’t know where to begin. Many of us have tried fad diets or exercising more, but we just can’t seem to shed those pounds. Here are some tips from nutritionists that could help you lose weight.

1) Don’t just focus on carbs.

Many people try low-carb diets and experience quick success, so they try to stick with it permanently. Those diets are generally not sustainable. Although it’s good to limit your carbs, that’s not the only thing you should be focused on.
HealthyWay
You want to make sure that your diet leads to a caloric deficit. If you’re cutting out carbs but eating a bunch of nuts or oils, you may actually gain weight because of the additional calories. Focus on overall calories, not just carbohydrates.

2) Try not to weigh yourself.

There’s nothing more frustrating than dieting and exercising for a month or two only to get on the scale and see you haven’t lost much weight. This is incredibly discouraging and leads to many people just giving up.
HealthyWay
That’s a shame, because weight fluctuations can be caused by water intake, the time of the day you weigh yourself, and many other factors not related to calories.
Instead of weighing yourself, focus on how your pants fit and how you look. If you’re dieting and exercising, you should look (and feel) better, and your pants should be looser. That will show you that what you’re doing is working,

3) Enjoy the food you’re eating.

Some people think that eating right means depriving yourself of the foods you love. That’s not the case at all. In fact, you have to treat yourself from time to time in order to stick with the diet.
HealthyWay
Allow yourself to cheat once in awhile, just make sure it doesn’t become a regular thing. The key to a healthy diet is moderation, not deprivation.

4) Ice water helps you burn calories.

We all know that it’s important to drink water throughout the day, but drinking the right type of water can help you burn extra calories. In fact, you can burn an extra 100 calories a day by drinking ice water.
HealthyWay
When you drink ice cold water, your body burns extra energy to maintain your core temperature. Three 24-ounce servings of ice water is the magic number to drink to burn those 100 calories.

5) Losing weight requires a real change in lifestyle.

We’ve all been sucked in by fad diets that promise immediate results. These diets are good if you need to lose weight quickly for a big event or just want to boost your motivation. The problem is, some people get the wrong impression and think that keeping the weight off will be just as easy. It’s not.
HealthyWay
To really stay fit and healthy, you’ll have to change your whole lifestyle. That means eating right every day, getting enough exercise throughout the week, and avoiding the unhealthy eating that can pack on pounds. It’s not necessarily “easy” to do, but the rewards are completely worth it.

13 Ways To Instantly Appear 10 Years Younger

After the teenage years have passed, pretty much nobody likes to look older.
Fortunately, there’s makeup to help out with that. Here are a few ways to use your favorite products to quickly knock off a decade (and sometimes more).

1. Blush

It’s better to use blush that’s light and glittery in shades of light pink and peach. This creates a bright, youthful look that can really shed the years.
HealthyWay
Even better, blush helps to draw attention away from common sites of wrinkles, including crow’s feet and laugh lines. Beautiful skin is ageless, and blush helps you achieve just that.

2. Eyelashes

The wider your eyes appear, the more youthful you will appear. Use a volumizing mascara and lash curler.
For an even more youthful, wild look, consider false eyelashes. Even a simple addition like small lash clusters at the corners of your eyelids can help you look fun, adventurous, and energetic.

3. Eyeshadow

Your eyes will look tired if you wear a dark shadow. Instead, choose an eyeshadow that’s just a shade lighter than your natural skin tone.
HealthyWay
For an extra kick, draw a line of shimmery eyeshadow over the top of your eyeliner. This will give your whole gaze a sparkle that conveys youth and vigor.

4. Skin Tone

Try soft shades of peach, gold, and caramel. Yellow is a good tone as a base because it makes your skin look warmer, which always equates to youth.
To be clear, a yellowish foundation works for all skin types; light, dark, and everywhere in between. Just don’t go too yellow. Jaundice is anything but youthful.

5. Facial Highlights

Use concealer that’s a shade lighter than your natural skin tone and apply it to the corners of your eyes and lips, the chin, and the outer parts of the nostrils.

HealthyWay
Makeup and Beauty Blog

To bring out the natural beauty in your facial structure, finish the job with your favorite blush along the ridge of your cheekbones. Although skin tends to sag slightly over the years, strong cheekbones create a full, healthy look.

6. Eyeliner

With a brown pencil, your eyes will appear brighter and fuller. Brown eyeliners also disguise the yellowing whites of eyes.
Go with brown even if you’ve been in love with black eyeliner since you bought your first Cure album back in middle school. Dark brown looks just like black from a distance, but it’s softer, more subtle, and—yes—younger looking.

7. Hair Volume and Shine

Use mousse to create volume and then top it off with an oil mask. Apply the oil from only the middle of your hair to its ends. You don’t want your roots to appear oily.
HealthyWay
It also pays to take care of your hair, even if you’ve already done the damage. Don’t blow dry unless you absolutely have to, and skip the tough metal comb.

8. Lipstick

A lipstick with a “wet” look contains reflective particles that will diffuse light and soften the wrinkles for you. However, you might want to consider a change in lipstick shade if you really want to erase the years.
Lips tend to thin out with age. Bolder colors just highlight this fact. Instead, pick something that’s halfway between your true lip color and a fruity, natural red. Pro tip: You can add a little wet shimmer to any lip stain with a layer of clear, creamy balm.

9. Hair Color

It’s best to choose a lighter shade and one that is no more than two tones lighter than your natural color. If you’re already blonde, consider adding multi-tonal highlights.
HealthyWay
Look for hair dyes that describe themselves as “neutral” or “natural.” They’re more likely to be warm and subtle than dyes marked “bold” or “golden.”

10. Perfume

Some scents are so associated with age that there’s a (rather unfortunate) term for them: old lady perfume.
HealthyWay
Typically, these are cloying floral scents. Steer clear.

11. Foundation

It’s better to use a light liquid texture that has light-reflecting particles. Similar to the wet lipstick look, this will diffuse light and soften the wrinkles.

12. Creamy Makeup

Creamier textures in eyeshadows, blushes, and highlighters will go on smooth and give you a youthful look.
HealthyWay
Liquid concealers are a must.

13. Eyebrows

The new trend is to keep your eyebrows in a natural, thick shape. That makes sense because younger people tend to wear thicker brows. Make sure that the tone of eyebrow color you use is the same tone or slightly darker than your hair color.
HealthyWay
While you’re at it, be sure to use an eyebrow shadow instead of a pencil. It will go on smoother and look more natural.

Birth Control Shots For Men Prevent Pregnancy But Can Have These Side Effects

For years, both men and women have been clamoring for a male birth control pill. Women find it unfair that they are responsible for taking the pill or getting an IUD to prevent pregnancy.
HealthyWay
Men, too, want the ability to control their sperm count without relying on condoms. Scientists have recently developed a shot for men that they say is as effective as the pill for women, but it comes with certain side effects that some men think makes it ultimately not worth it.
Many have wondered why a birth control pill for men has never been created, with some speculating that it’s due to society’s gender bias that says women are ultimately responsible for babies. Although attitude plays a part in it, a bigger reason is that it’s easier to prevent the insemination of a single egg than to try to control millions of sperm.
HealthyWay
It’s also because men have long had the option of a vasectomy. A vasectomy cuts the vas deferens, preventing the release of sperm. This is an almost completely effective way to prevent pregnancy and is reversible in most cases, but many men don’t want to go under the knife. With this new shot, they won’t have to have surgery to prevent pregnancy.
A recent study followed 266 men who received this shot and tracked their sexual habits. Of these men, only four became fathers in the 56 weeks tracked by the studies, giving it a 95 percent success rate. Although this was encouraging, the men did report some complications.
HealthyWay
The shot works by affecting the hormone levels in men, which can lead to some pretty unpleasant side effects in the participants. The research actually had to be stopped early because the men were reporting severe mood swings and depression related to the shots. Other minor side effects reported included acne, injection site pain, and increased libido.
Doctors are convinced that they can tweak the shot to make these side effects less problematic, but there may not be enough money available from pharmaceutical companies to take this shot to market. That’s because of the gender bias mentioned above; these companies are not convinced that men will actually pay for this shot, no matter how effective it may be.
HealthyWay
Many women, however, are unsympathetic to the concerns of these men. That’s because women already deal with these side effects from birth control and have for decades. To them, it seems a bit hypocritical that men are willing or unable to tolerate the side effects and instead pass the burden of preventing an unwanted pregnancy to the woman.
For their part, many young men are stepping up to say they would gladly get this shot and would tolerate the side effects. It’s less invasive than a vasectomy and more effective than condoms. Plus it would give men the ability to control if and when they get a woman pregnant.
HealthyWay
If enough men step up and tell pharmaceutical companies that there’s a profit to be made from this shot, it’s likely that research will continue. If they don’t, it’s likely that research will end.

What Your Sedentary Office Job Is Doing To Your Body (And The Ways To Fight Back)

It’s the creakiness that you feel in your neck. Or the constant ache in your wrists. Or maybe you’re feeling a shooting pain down your spine that slowly moves its way to your leg.

HealthyWay

As happy as you are that you’re killing it at the office (or finally getting to the bottom of your “bill pay” pile) you know that your body is paying the price for it. Sitting all day is actually worse for you than you might think.

New research has shown that sitting for long periods can wreak havoc on your body and health. People who sit for extended periods typically have increased blood pressure, higher blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, higher cholesterol levels, and higher incidence of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer than those who move around more.

HealthyWay

This doesn’t even touch on the plethora of muscular and skeletal maladies that occur as a result of prolonged sitting, which include cervical and spinal disc problems, muscle pain and tightness, and neurological issues.

So what’s the solution? Basically, it’s to sit less and stand (and move) more often. In the case of the “workplace blues,” small changes can really add up to big and positive changes in your health. Try these tips that will keep you working smarter and healthier!

Pick a great chair.

Since you’re going to be spending a lot of time in it, the number one thing to consider when making your workplace healthier is finding a proper chair along with a proper sitting position. You want to make that you’re at the right height when you’re sitting.

HealthyWay

You should be able to sit tall with your shoulders relaxed and pulled back, your spine in alignment with your head and neck, and your forearms parallel to the floor. Your feet should be flat with your knees at a right angle.

Be sure that your shoulders aren’t shrugging or slouching and your back isn’t rounding. A good chair will offer adjustable height settings, a cushioned seat, and a firm lower back support.

Set your monitor and keyboard up at the right height.

If you look around the office at your colleagues on their computers, you’ll notice that most of them are hunched over their monitors, which is causing their necks to strain and their backs to curve.

HealthyWay
WOCInTech Chat

Proper monitor and keyboard height can make a huge difference in how your body feels at the end of a work day. Most people set their monitor heights too low and their keyboards too high. Your monitor should be at a height that you can look at it straight on (in a neutral position) without having to strain your neck to see it.

HealthyWay

Keyboards should allow your shoulders to be in a relaxed position, and your forearms and wrists should be supported and parallel to the floor. If you use a laptop and often end up feeling like your body is twisted, a separate keyboard and mouse may help alleviate all of your aches and pains.

Take walking breaks.

For every hour that you work at your desk, stand up and take a lap around your office (or even just walk to the bathroom and back). This will loosen your muscles, boost your metabolism, and help you concentrate better when you return to your desk.

HealthyWay

When you sit for a good part of the day, it’s important to take any opportunity to move more. Got a meeting? Suggest having it over a walk instead of coffee. Is it a beautiful day? Shorten your mealtime and take a lunchtime stroll instead.

Stand more often.

As much as tightness and stiffness, circulation can become a problem with excessive sitting as well. Take the opportunity to stand as often as possible. We find this hack works well: Whenever the phone rings, stand up and take all calls from that position.

HealthyWay

If it’s possible, look into purchasing or renting a standing work station. They’re becoming hugely popular because they keep you healthier and feeling better.

Take stretch breaks.

The longer you sit, the tighter your muscles get. The tighter your muscles get, the more your body will ache.

You can combat achy, tight muscles by taking mini stretch breaks throughout the day. Here are the three best stretches you can easily do in the office.

Chest Doorway Stretch

Standing in a doorway, place your palms and elbows against the doorway frame. Your elbows should be at a 90 degree angle and slightly lower than your shoulders.

HealthyWay
North American Spine Society

Lean forward through the door, leading with your chest. Hold for 10 to 20 seconds.

Piriformis Stretch (Sciatica Stretch)

Sitting upright in your chair, bend your right knee and cross your leg so that your right ankle is resting on your left knee.
