Dry Shampoo Is Actually A Scam

When we first heard about dry shampoo, we thought our lives had changed forever.

We’re not exactly sure why washing our hair is so unappealing, but for the most part, it’s an obnoxious ritual. Dry shampoo seems like an excellent alternative; if you’re running late and you don’t have time to run through the shower, why not give your hair a quick spritz and be on your way?

Unfortunately, dry shampoo is problematic—from both scientific and functional standpoints.

These products work by soaking up grease and oil, but they’re not nearly as effective as soap and water. If you decide to forgo “wet washing” indefinitely, you’re going to run into a few issues right away.
To understand why, let’s consider the typical ingredients of popular dry shampoos. Most contain cornstarch, which binds to sebum, the oils created by your scalp.

To keep the cornstarch from caking together, many formulas also include magnesium stearate, along with a sizable dose of kaolin, a soft clay that reduces reflectivity. That makes your hair and scalp appear less shiny (and therefore less gross).
Most spray-on dry shampoos also include alcohol and petroleum, which propel the ingredients out of the bottle. The alcohol helps the mixture evaporate quickly.

Together these ingredients prevent oil from building up on your hair and keep your locks from looking greasy. But they don’t magically leave your head—they stick around, leaving a light residue on your scalp.

The good news is that the residue is fairly safe.

“Most shampoos today developed by major cosmetic houses are very safe, whether they’re wet or dry. They’re compounded so you can use them without problems,” said Wilma Bergfeld, MD, in an interview with Cleveland Clinic. “The question is whether it’s important to clean the scalp, and that answer is yes.”
The bad news? Dry shampoo certainly isn’t a substitute for wet shampoo.

“Your hair and scalp needs to be washed and rinsed intermittently to keep it clean,” Dr. Bergfeld said. “The scalp collects chemicals and pollutants both from the air and from cosmetic care products, and if you only use a dry shampoo, the cleansing is only minimal but it does freshen the hair by removing oils.”
Given enough time, your dry shampoo habit could make your hair more brittle, leading to damage and hair loss. It also doesn’t do much for your scalp, since it’s designed to improve your appearance, not to act as a complete cleanser.

Dry shampoo “deposits substances to coat the follicle that can build up,” L.A. dermatologist Sonia Batra told The Atlantic. “The resulting inflammation can weaken the follicles and increase shedding. These products can also cause hair follicles to stick together, so that a hair that would normally shed during brushing may take two or three strands along with it.”

If you’re going to use dry shampoo, make sure to use it correctly.

Dermatologists recommend spraying only the oily part of your hair, not the scalp. Don’t use dry shampoo for more than two days in a row, and if possible, opt for the non-spray shampoos, since they don’t contain alcohol or petroleum.
Finally, the most important—and disappointing—piece of advice: Don’t expect to see the same results you’d get from a typical cleaning.

5 Everyday Things That Age Us

Aging is a natural process, but that doesn’t mean you have to embrace it. There are simple ways to reduce the negative effects of aging by tweaking your lifestyle.
By avoiding habits that accelerate aging, you can ensure that you look as youthful as possible. Genetics play a large role, but external factors can make an even larger impact on your appearance. Here are five everyday things to avoid if you want to slow the aging process.

1. Chronic Stress

Stress is not just unpleasant, it’s dangerous. On the cellular level, chronic stress causes shorter telomeres, which are compound structures at the end of chromosomes that are associated with age-related diseases. Additionally, high levels of cortisol (the primary stress hormone) can weaken the immune system, damage the heart, and cause facial aging.
You may not be able to rid your life of stress, but there are ways to reduce and manage it. Meditation and yoga can ease stress, according to the Harvard Health Blog.

If meditation’s not your thing, consider spending time with friends, as research links socialization with stress relief. Marriage has also been proven to counter the effects of stress and increase longevity (though we’re not suggesting you get married solely for those reasons).

2. Inflammatory Foods

Inflammation is one of the biggest drivers of aging, and your diet could be full of inflammatory foods if you’re not careful. Trans fats, refined sugars, white bread, and dairy can all trigger inflammation inside your body.

On the other hand, there are many foods that reduce inflammation in your body. Tomatoes, olive oil, leafy green vegetables, and fatty fish are all anti-inflammatory. In fact, just about everything in the Mediterranean diet fights inflammation and promotes healthy aging.

3. Too Much Sun

Most of us know by now that the sun ages us, but we don’t always heed the warning. A summer suntan has yet to go out of style, so we continue to sit in the sun for longer than we should.

4. Not Enough Sleep

University Hospitals Case Medical Center conducted a sleep study with 60 women between the ages of 30 and 49. The results showed that those who got quality sleep recovered more quickly from sunburns and other stressors and had fewer fine lines and more even pigmentation.
“Sleep deprived women show signs of premature skin aging and a decrease in their skin’s ability to recover after sun exposure,” said Dr. Elma Baron, director of the Skin Study Center at UH Case Medical Center and associate professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
What’s more, the problem is fairly widespread.

5. Too Many Calories

The type of calories you consume plays a large role in aging, but the quantity is also important. Studies of fish, rodents, and dogs have shown that caloric restriction (without malnutrition) can slow aging and increase lifespan.

There is not enough evidence to prove that humans benefit from caloric restriction, but there is ample proof that consuming too many calories has disastrous effects on aging. Studies have shown that obesity accelerates the onset of age-related diseases and the aging process in general. Provided that you’re getting the necessary nutrients, cutting calories can help you look and feel younger.

France To Make Vaccines Mandatory For All Children

In the first half of this year, France has reported nearly six times the number of cases of measles as they experienced over the same timeframe in 2016—295 cases this year versus 47 last.

French politicians have taken notice of this disturbing trend and now they are taking action to prevent widespread public health emergencies.
As Newsweek reports, “Three vaccines, for diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis, are already mandatory in France,” but now Prime Minister Édouard Philippe is saying that beginning early next year, eight other vaccines will become required for French citizens.

The new law will add vaccines preventing polio, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae bacteria, pneumococcus, and meningococcus C to their list of mandatory vaccines.

A Matter of Pride and Practicality for the French People

“Children are still dying of measles,” Prime Minister Philippe said in a policy speech covered by the French publication Le Figaro. “In the homeland of Pasteur that is not admissible.”
Pasteur, of course, is the French biologist for whom pasteurization—the process that helps to keep milk and other foodstuffs germ free—was named.

The 19th-century scientist is also renowned as the “father of microbiology” and is credited with the creation of rabies and anthrax vaccines.
The European Center for Disease Control notes that when it comes to measles in France, “The incidence is highest in children under one year (5.2/100,000 with 43 cases), which represents 14.6% of cases declared… Of the cases with known vaccination status (258 cases out of 295), 190 (74%) were not vaccinated, 40 (16%) had received a single dose, 25 (10%) had received two doses and for three cases (1%) the number was unknown.”

A-level vaccination is the only way to stop outbreaks.

Dr. Seth Berkley of the nonprofit organization Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance promotes global vaccination policies.
“Over the past five years,” Berkley told NPR earlier this year, “measles vaccine coverage around the world has stagnated at around 78 percent… That in combination with the European outbreak is worrisome.”

NPR reporter Michaeleen Doucleff elaborated on the scientist’s comments, “For the measles, it’s not enough to have 78 percent of a population vaccinated. You need about 90 to 95 percent to stop outbreaks, Berkeley says.”
So right now, if the world were being graded on our collective vaccination against measles, we’d only be at a C level. We need to work together to get this grade up to an A.

France is not alone.

Germany is considering similar legislation that would fine families who don’t vaccinate their children. Italy has recently submitted similar legislation as well. In Australia, certain tax rebates are tied to whether a child has been properly vaccinated.
Meanwhile in Texas, their house of representatives recently passed a “measure barring mandatory vaccines for foster children,” with the amendment’s sponsor, Arlington Republican Rep. Bill Zedler, saying, “Immunizations do not qualify as emergency care. No vaccine cures a disease.”

Sometimes it looks like it’s two steps forward, one step back for supporters of mandatory vaccinations.
Only time will tell if legislation requiring vaccines will have a positive outcome for public health, but the science clearly points to the benefits of a vaccinated population.

How To Safely Unclog Your Ears While On An Airplane

Ever wonder why your ears pop on planes?
It’s a pretty universal phenomenon, although some people can’t quite get rid of the pressure, regardless of how frequently they fly. The good news is that you can safely unclog your ears provided that you understand the mechanism that causes that unpleasant “pop.”

The Eustachian tube is a small funnel that connects your middle ear to the back of your nose. When air pressure changes, the Eustachian tube will equalize the pressure—as long as it’s working correctly and it has enough time to make the necessary adjustments.
Unfortunately, that’s not always the case when you’re rapidly ascending and descending through 39,000 feet. Here are a few of the most effective methods for unclogging your ears and enjoying a safe, comfortable flight.

1. Try the classics: Chewing gum, yawning, and swallowing.

These methods work because they activate the same muscles that control the Eustachian tube, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology.

“Swallowing occurs more often when chewing gum or when sucking on hard candies,” the organization’s website reads. “These are good air travel practices, especially just before take-off and during descent. Yawning is even better. Avoid sleeping during descent because swallowing may not occur often enough to keep up with the pressure changes.”

2. You can also hold your nose, close your mouth, and gently blow through your nostrils.

The key word there is “gently,” as blowing too hard can cause serious ear damage. You shouldn’t need much pressure to open up the Eustachian tube and relieve the pressure. Children shouldn’t attempt this method, as they’re more likely to use excessive force.
If these methods don’t seem to work, something might be blocking your Eustachian tube, and when that’s the case, you’ve got one option: Remove the blockage.

3. Take decongestants before your board the plane.

Decongestants thin out your mucous, allowing it to flow freely (sorry for the mental image).

Many Eustachian tube blockages are caused by congestion, so taking an over-the-counter decongestant before your flight will often prevent your ears from popping.
You can also try a nasal spray for a quicker solution, provided that you visit the airplane bathroom to use that spray (your fellow passengers will appreciate the courtesy).

Consider decongestants even if you feel fairly healthy. Blockages aren’t always associated with sickness, so if you frequently encounter pressurization issues, an over-the-counter medicine is certainly worth a try. Just be sure to check with your doctor beforehand if you have any persistent medical conditions or if you’re taking any other medications.

4. Some airlines also sell specialized earplugs.

Earplugs like EarPlanes help to regulate air pressure, and they can be essential carry-ons for some passengers. Just be sure to toss the earplugs at the end of the flight if you’re ill; they’re porous, so they’re not so easy to clean.

Even just a few minutes of sun exposure leads to the breakdown of collagen within your skin. Collagen is the protein that gives your skin its strength and elasticity, so when that is damaged, wrinkles start to appear.

“We now have the scientific evidence to back the long-held assumption about the cosmetic value of sunscreen,” said Dr. Adele Green, lead author of a recent study that examined the effects of sunscreen on aging. “Regular sunscreen use by young and mid-aged adults under 55 brings cosmetic benefits and also decreases the risk of skin cancer.”

It’s a good idea to use sunscreen regularly, even on cloudy days, as UV rays simply aren’t great for your skin’s collagen. If you wear makeup, you can even look for brands with built-in SPF protection.

2. Picking at Your Skin

When you start to pick at a zit or ingrown hair, you’re going to do some damage. That’s especially true when you use your fingernails, which often introduce bacteria into the opening in your skin.

“When performed properly, extractions can clear certain types of pimples. However, bad techniques combined with attempts to pick non-pickable pimples can be a recipe for disaster,” said Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, to Allure.

If you need to pick at something, try only using thin tweezers or safety pins, sanitized carefully before and after each use. Better yet, use a product with salicylic acid to treat pimples properly—and if you have a recurring skin issue, see a dermatologist.

3. A High-Sugar Diet

Eating a high sugar diet is terrible for your overall health and especially bad for your skin. The saying “you are what you eat” is actually somewhat true on a molecular level.

When you consume a lot of sugar, a process called glycation occurs; sugar molecules attach themselves to proteins in your skin, causing them to become rigid and disfigured. Collagen is one such protein.

4. Sleeping in Makeup

The New Plastic Surgery Procedure That Is Trending Among Millennials

In Hollywood, dimples are a sought-after physical attribute (even if they are technically caused by a genetic defect).
However, cheek dimples are a purely genetic trait; if your parents had them, there’s a good chance that you’ll have them. But if you weren’t born with them, you’re probably out of luck.

Unless, of course, you’re willing to go under the knife. A surgical procedure called dimpleplasty has gained new ground with millennials in recent years—though doctors warn about the potential risks.

What are dimples, exactly?

Dimples are a genetic trait created when the skin of the cheek is directly attached to the cheek muscle through a small, naturally occurring hole. Smiling causes the cheek muscles to contract, pulling the skin tight and allowing the dimples to appear. Many people find dimples to be desirable, despite the fact that they’re functionally useless.

Dimpleplasty has been available for over 30 years, but the popularity of the practice has surged recently. Doctors believe people are drawn to this procedure because it is minimally invasive and relatively inexpensive. That’s not to say that it’s completely free from risk, however.

Dimpleplasty is attractive to millennials for several reasons.

A dimpleplasty is an outpatient procedure performed when the patient is under local anesthesia and only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. The surgeon makes the incisions on the inside of the cheek, so there is no visible scarring. The average total cost is between $1,200 and $2,500, which is relatively affordable when it comes to plastic surgery.

Doctors work with the patient to precisely measure where to place the dimple. After placement is determined, an incision is made into the cheek muscle (buccinator), at which point the cheek skin is attached. Some swelling typically occurs, and most people have semi-permanent dimples for about two months. Gradually the inflammation goes down and the dimples are only visible when the patient smiles.

However, the risks of dimpleplasty are substantial.

Some doctors warn that although dimpleplasty can be attractive from a cosmetic standpoint, the risks outweigh the benefits.

Mouth incisions are, by nature, extremely susceptible to bacteria. Surgeons typically prescribe a small dose of antibiotics to speed up the healing process and to avoid infection. Patients are also required to use an antiseptic mouthwash multiple times a day to kill any germs, but even with these precautions, infections are a possibility.
Dimpleplasty typically isn’t reversible. Doctors can sometimes remove the attached skin to minimize the dimples, but this isn’t always an option. The artificial dimples can also gradually disappear over time, as the aging process naturally causes the skin to stretch and move.
Some patients also note that their new dimples move or sag after several years. Working with a qualified, experienced surgeon can limit some of these risks. Still, no cosmetic surgery is perfect.

Chan Zuckerberg To Push New Vision Of Personalized Learning Software For Schools

Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg is the sixth richest man in the world, with an estimated fortune of $45 billion. He and his wife, pediatrician Priscilla Chan, plan on using the vast majority of that fortune for philanthropic aims through their newly formed Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
Most notably, they are attempting to overhaul the American education system with an approach called “whole-child personalized learning.”

The power couple plans to use their particular specialties to move the initiative’s agenda ahead. That means that they will support the development of software to help teachers while also focusing on a holistic approach to serving each child.

Of course, Zuckerberg is the technology specialist, and Chan specializes in how developmental problems can derail a child’s educational advancement.

Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education James Shelton will head the project to determine how best to combine these two approaches.

Shelton told Education Week, “We’ve got to dispel this notion that personalized learning is just about technology. In fact, it is about understanding students, giving them agency, and letting them do work that is engaging and exciting.”

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative outlines their approach on the organization’s web site.

The mission statement says, “No child can reach his or her full potential without an education to match—an education that lifts up their passions and accommodates their needs. We believe all young people should have such experiences and that personalized learning is one of the most promising approaches to reach this goal.”

Their goals are ambitious as they look to change the way teachers and students interact for years to come. But there’s reason to be hopeful about the initiative’s potential for success. Chan and Zuckerberg fund their organization with around 99 percent of their Facebook shares, which are worth well over $40 billion.

With that money, they hope to tackle social, emotional, and physical development issues for students.

The initiative recognizes that many factors affect a child’s education. Free lunch programs help combat one of those issues, but there are countless more problems that can derail a child’s development.

He says that Chan Zuckerberg is “one of the best-resourced startups in the world, but still a startup.” Nothing conveys that more than the fact that there are 20 employees on the organization’s education team.
Despite the long odds against them, Chan and Zuckerberg are forging ahead. They created the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in December 2015 after they had their daughter, Maxima. Now that they are expecting a second child, they are moving ahead with vigor. As they develop their own strategies for education, they have also given grants to various educational groups such as Vision to Learn, Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, and SAGA Innovations.

New Study Says Women Can Wait To Get Pregnant, Even If They're Over 30

For decades women have been told there’s an expiration date on their ability to have children, and the age they’re given to accomplish this is frightfully young. Although fertility decline is a biological reality, the facts we have heard for years are seriously skewed.

There is a ton of pressure placed on women to have kids by a certain age. Not only that, we expect women to fit in school, a career, and marriage alongside motherhood, all within a small window of time. That’s an impossible task, especially since the age by which you should pop out a kid is 30—or so we’ve always heard.

The stigma of getting pregnant when you’re 30-plus years old is strong. “Elderly primigravida” is the term used for a woman who is pregnant with her first child over the age of 35. Elderly? That seems a little harsh. New information is coming to light to bust this myth, and what people are finding out is life-changing.

Women are presented with all this information supposedly based on current facts and studies. However, the “facts” that support these claims are actually based on information from centuries ago.

“The widely cited statistic that one in three women ages 35 to 39 will not be pregnant after a year of trying, for instance, is based on an article published in 2004 in the journal Human Reproduction. The New Normal

The fact is that there are more and more cases of women having children well into—and beyond—their thirties.

“In 1990, teens had a higher share of all births (13%) than did women ages 35 and older (9%). In 2008, the reverse was true—10% of births were to teens, compared with 14% to women ages 35 and older.”

Hidden Facts

Completely false information spreads like wildfire, while the truth is being left in the dust. The power of withholding facts has a great impact on how women live their lives.

We’re meant to believe that for a woman to become pregnant over the age of 35 is nothing short of a miracle. As Twenge wrote in The Atlantic:
“Even some studies based on historical birth records are more optimistic than what the press normally reports: One found that, in the days before birth control, 89 percent of 38-year-old women were still fertile. Another concluded that the typical woman was able to get pregnant until somewhere between ages 40 and 45.”
This doesn’t mean that people don’t have real struggles and issues with their fertility, but it does mean that we’re better off than we’re meant to believe.

For STEM Educators, Robots Are A Powerful New Tool

STEM fields are growing, but unfortunately, many kids don’t seem especially interested.

The US Department of Education notes that over the decade from 2010-2020, the number of jobs requiring strong training in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) will grow at a significantly faster rate than other professions.

The problem, though, is that most students won’t go into these lucrative fields. According to the Department of Education, “only 16 percent of American high school seniors are proficient in math and interested in a STEM career.”

Fortunately, some educators are exploring novel ways to promote STEM literacy—and robots play a surprisingly significant role.

To tackle the STEM problem educators need to start early. Research shows that children who acquire mathematics skills before entering elementary school have a much greater chance of academic success later in life. Problem-solving skills and critical thinking are also vital additions to a balanced early childhood education curriculum.

“Much of math and science instruction in schools is theoretical,” explains June Lin, a robotics-based education professional.

Educators like Lin believe that robotics provides an exceptional introduction to STEM learning, since children engage easily with robots. By teaching kids to design, build, and code robots, educators can teach the essential skills associated with STEM.

Perhaps more importantly, this approach provides children with motivation; after all, there’s nothing cooler than a fully functional robot.

Robots as Teachers

Recently, Sony Electronics launched its own robotic learning system via Indiegogo, following a successful February release in Japan and China. The project, KOOV, allows kids to intuitively embrace their natural creativity and curiosity to acquire essential STEM skills. The KOOV system uses a process that education professionals call “inquiry-based learning.”

With KOOV, children construct objects using colorful three-dimensional blocks, which can fit together in more than 100 different ways. Young learners then add battery-powered wheels, lights, sensors, and other electronic components. To bring those electronics to life, KOOVers must learn to code.

That’s actually easier than it sounds. KOOV features a 30-hour coding course that starts with the basics, gradually adding new skills and concepts while introducing users to visual programming via a simple drag-and-drop interface. Children learn how to find and address problems, design new features, and gradually create more complex devices.

To kids aged 8 and up, KOOV feels like playing. However, KOOV isn’t a toy—it’s the blueprint to success in STEM, brilliantly presented in an engaging way.

Creativity in the Curriculum

Some schools are incorporating coding and robotics into their education policies.

The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology in the Bronx, reports the New York Times, “requires all its students to take computer science courses in each year of middle school.”

Lab School computer science teacher Ben Samuels-Kalow has seen the benefits of this requirement:

“I’ve literally had a conversation with a student where she’s saying, ‘I really don’t like math,’ as she’s walking me through a JavaScript function to have an interactive photo gallery on a web page that she had also built from scratch,” Mr. Samuels-Kalow told the Times. “I looked at her and said, ‘This is harder math than what you’re doing in your math class.’”

“Mr. Samuels-Kalow said he found that students are often willing to work harder in his classes than in their other classes,” writes the Times, “because the rewards of…being able to play a game that they designed were so enticing.”

More than Technology

Educators say that robotics and coding competitions may provide another avenue for keeping STEM students motivated. Macungie, PA-based teacher Julia Dweck includes robots in her classroom and coaches her elementary school’s robotics team.

“[Learning about robotics] helps students develop a respect for their own abilities,” Dweck told the education website Getting Smart.

“As students develop strategies to facilitate the learning process, they experienced growth in their meta-cognitive skills, too. Introduction to coding and robotics is as relevant to our world as learning to write. Today’s learner should experience opportunities to practice coding and robotics in the classroom from an early age. This foundation will serve them as learners, digital citizens and world leaders.”

These competitions also teach teamwork—another exceptionally helpful STEM skill—along with empathy.

“I learned to always include all of my teammates because it isn’t fair if nobody else gets a chance to do things and we can finish anything on time if we just work together,” an 8-year-old robotics team member explained to Getting Smart.

Coding and robotics keep children engaged, which is ultimately the most important factor in long-term academic performance. Creative education programs may hold the key to solving America’s STEM problem; by starting with the simplest concepts and developing core skills, kids can gain the technical literacy they need for success.

Soy Sauce Overdose Puts Teenager In Coma

It was the Bizarre Case of the Soy Sauce Overdose.
According to a report published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, a 19-year-old man barely survived after drinking a quart of soy sauce.

The teenager’s friends had dared him to consume the sodium-rich liquid. Within minutes, the extreme amounts of salt prompted seizures, followed by complete unresponsiveness. The patient’s friends brought him to the emergency room of the University of Virginia Medical Center, where physicians began treatment.
“He didn’t respond to any of the stimuli that we gave him,” said Dr. David J. Carlberg, who treated the patient, in an interview with LiveScience.

“He had some clonus, which is just elevated reflexes. It’s a sign that basically the nervous system wasn’t working very well.”
Carlberg diagnosed the issue as hypernatremia, a condition that typically occurs in older people who don’t drink sufficient amounts of water. Hypernatremic patients have high levels of sodium ions in their blood supply, which prevent several body systems from functioning effectively. It’s also characterized by brain cell shrinkage, eventually leading to bleeding in or around the brain.

If left unchecked, hypernatremia can cause permanent brain damage, circulatory problems, or death. It’s most common in patients who have dementia or other mental conditions that impair judgment or prevent feelings of thirst. Needless to say, soy sauce consumption isn’t a common cause.

Fortunately, the condition can usually be treated easily without any long-lasting effects.

Typically, doctors use intravenous fluids to restore balance to the bloodstream, limiting electrolyte levels and allowing the body to resume normal function. That was difficult in this case—severe self-induced hypernatremia is extremely rare.
“We were more aggressive than had been reported before in terms of bringing his sodium back down to a safer range,” Carlberg said.

The team at the University of Virginia Medical Center decided to use rapid free-water infusions to quickly rid the patient’s body of the excess sodium. In only 30 minutes, they pumped about 1.5 gallons of a water–sugar solution into the teen’s body. Within about five hours, they were able to restore the patient’s sodium levels to normal.
His symptoms didn’t immediately subside, however. The patient remained in a coma for three days, according to doctors, before waking up on his own. He displayed symptoms for an additional several days, likely due to the seizures he’d experienced at the onset of the hypernatremia.

Fortunately, these effects were temporary. Doctors told LiveScience that the 19-year-old is back at college and doing well; he doesn’t seem to have any permanent damage from the misadventure.
The patient was extremely lucky in this case, as physicians typically treat the rare condition with a slower process. Carlberg’s team elected to use rapid infusions due to the extent of the sodium imbalance, noting the severity of the patient’s condition.

How likely is a soy sauce (or any other type of salt) overdose?

Pretty unlikely. The patient in this case consumed about 0.35 pounds of sodium, an almost impossible amount. In most other cases of self-induced hypernatremia, patients vomit up the excess salt long before the most severe symptoms occur.

As the doctors noted in their report, legends claim that ancient Chinese would purposely ingest huge amounts of salt as a way of making atonement, choosing an honorable death as a result of the ensuing hypernatremia. That makes for a great story, but we couldn’t find any definitive sources documenting that practice.
Typically, excessive sodium works much more slowly to damage your health. Over time, sodium levels can cause high blood pressure, and they tend to cause calcium loss due to dehydration. There’s also some evidence that sodium negatively affects cognitive function, which certainly makes sense given what we know about extreme hypernatremia.

With that said, our bodies need some salt in order to function. Some health experts worry that reducing sodium to extremely low levels may be more dangerous.
Low levels of blood sodium—referred to as hyponatremia—can cause many of the same symptoms as hypernatremia, including headaches, confusion, weakness, and fatigue.
Typically, hyponatremia occurs when patients have severe gastrointestinal issues, which can cause dehydration. That’s why doctors often recommend electrolyte solutions (for instance, sports drinks) to patients who have diarrhea and vomiting.

The verdict: To stay healthy, it’s important to balance your salt intake.

And don’t partake in any soy sauce dares.
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a daily sodium intake of no more than 2,300 milligrams. Ideally, adults should limit intake to around 1,500 milligrams per day, although this is also the subject of some controversy. Several studies have demonstrated that diets with higher sodium levels can also be healthy, provided that they’re otherwise balanced.

Most soy sauces contain about 879 milligrams per tablespoon-sized serving. A quart of soy sauce contains 56,028 milligrams, which is about 24 times greater than the AHA’s max. Even if the patient had opted for low-sodium soy sauce, he’d have ingested at least 10 times the recommended maximum.
And before you start laughing at this teenager’s misfortune, think about the last time you took a stupid dare—and remind yourself that 90 percent of Americans eat too much salt.
