Why You Secretly Love Scary Movies, According To Science

With October fast approaching, over 50 percent of Americans will see at least one scary movie during the month of ghouls and goblins.
Horror is big business. Last week, Stephen King’s It made box office history with a $117.2 million opening weekend, the largest September debut in history.
In a sense, that wasn’t a surprise. Over the last decade, well-done horror films like The Ring, Paranormal Activity, and The Conjuring have launched successful franchises—often with lackluster sequels—and shows like The Walking Dead and American Horror Story have found broad audiences.
HealthyWay
The popularity of the garish and disconcerting leads to an interesting question: Why is horror so popular? Fear is, after all, an unpleasant feeling.
So how do films succeed when they set out to shock and terrify their audiences?

Brain chemistry seems to play a significant role.

As Dr. Margee Kerr of Robert Morris University told The Atlantic, people differ in their chemical responses to scary situations.
“One of the main hormones released during scary and thrilling activities is dopamine, and it turns out some individuals may get more of a kick from this dopamine response than others do,” Kerr says.
Some people don’t get the same kick, so they don’t end up enjoying the fight-or-flight response triggered by a truly horrifying scene. Interestingly, people who enjoy scary movies tend to experience more autonomic arousal (in other words, more of a physical response) than the people who don’t enjoy them.
Psychiatrist Steven Schlozman of Harvard Medical School says that thrill seekers who enjoy scary movies love tapping into their fight-or-flight response. However, they’re also training their brains to recognize patterns and to react to changes in those patterns.
HealthyWay
As an example, he conjures the image of a cute puppy; show the picture to a group of people, and they’ll fawn over it. Photoshop a pair of cat’s eyes onto the dog, however, and you’ll elicit a completely different response.
“Now you are messing with pattern recognition,” Schlozman says. “You have two recognizable patterns that don’t belong in the same picture, and that freaks people out.”
In this clip, psychologist Dr. Lynne Kenney discusses the involvement of the autonomic nervous system and explores why you might even writhe or twitch during the scariest scenes:

Thrill seekers enjoy these experiences since they’re able to work through fear and survival patterns in a safe environment while feeling just uneasy enough.
“Each time you verge more toward the uncanny, [those] folks get the feeling in their gut that things aren’t right, and the more fun they have,” Schlozman says.

People may dislike scary movies if they’ve had high-impact experiences with horror.

Kerr says that people need to know that they’re in a safe environment in order to enjoy a good scare.
HealthyWay
“I’ve talked to more than a handful of people who will never set foot in a haunted house because they went to a haunt at a young age and were traumatized,” Kerr says. “The chemicals that are released during fight-or-flight can work like glue to build strong memories [called] flashbulb memories of scary experiences, and if you’re too young to know the monsters are fake, it can be quite traumatic and something you’ll never forget, in a bad way.”
There you have it: If you love scary movies, it’s likely due to a combination of brain chemistry and your previous experiences with the genre. You know that you’re safe and you’re ready to challenge your brain with an unexpected set of patterns—while enjoying a nice dopamine rush with every jump and shriek.
HealthyWay
If you hate scary movies, however, your brain might put the brakes on that dopamine rush. You might not feel truly safe, particularly if you had a bad experience with a frightening flick in your younger years.
In either case, you’re not alone. Maybe those who opt out of a Halloween horror flick can indulge in a family friendly favorite like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown or Hocus Pocus instead.

Truth Behind The Shot: What It's Really Like Being An Instagram Fitness Model

Katie Dunlop, the owner of Love Sweat Fitness, a fitness Instagram with a blog to match, never set out to become a brand influencer.
In fact, if you had pulled her aside when she was a recent college grad who had gained 45 pounds during her college career and you told her she would soon be making her living as a fitness influencer, she probably would have thought you were joking.

“I never imagined I’d be teaching fitness classes or in the fitness world, let alone running an entire fitness community online,” Dunlop tells HealthyWay.
Before she adopted her healthy lifestyle, weight loss and fitness were difficult subjects for her. She tried countless fad diets, specialty products, and cycles of unhealthy eating followed by days of restriction. Taking care of her body was an emotional struggle for her.
When eating nutritious meals and finding exercise she loved really clicked, she not only lost 45 pounds, she also gained a passion for helping other women move past their struggles with weight and into a lasting, healthy lifestyle.

How She Got Started

Today Dunlop has 244,000 followers on Instagram, a popular blog, and more than 205,000 YouTube subscribers. As hard as might be to believe, her online following started very organically.
Her personal success losing weight sparked an interest in fitness and healthy eating.

“It really came out of my own weight loss transformation. I lost 45 pounds and completely changed my lifestyle. I fell in love with health and fitness,” explains Dunlop.
She became a certified personal trainer and began teaching fitness privately in Los Angeles. Her friends and the students in her barre classes actually were the ones who came up with the whole idea of taking her fitness education online, asking her to post workouts they could use while they weren’t in class.
Beginning with her personal Instagram feed, in 2014 Dunlop started posting fitness content, including inspirational quotes and workouts she created. It wasn’t long until she felt she should switch to a new account, so her family and friends wouldn’t be inundated with non-stop workouts and healthy living quotes. That’s when Love Sweat Fitness was born.

Dunlop believes that her message of no fad diets and a healthy lifestyle that is maintainable for the long term resonated with women who were tired of trying big changes or trendy diets that didn’t work. She also believes her timing was right—that starting her influencer career in the earlier years of Instagram’s popularity allowed her to reach a large audience in a shorter amount of time.
“It really stemmed from this passion that I had for wanting to share with people I did know. Because of that, and sharing my own personal transformation stories, it got picked up by larger pages who would then share it.”

This is when her audience really began to take off. Having popular fitness influencers sharing her content allowed her page to grow into something much larger than she had ever planned for it to be.

The Hustle

Of course, just because her life as an Instagram fitness influencer began organically, that doesn’t mean Dunlop hasn’t hustled. In early 2016, she turned Love Sweat Fitness into a full-time career. Making her business her sole source of income has meant giving it her all.
Between her time spent creating recipes, going on photo shoots, and filming workouts, Dunlop is a busy woman. If there is one thing she wants others to understand it is that being an influencer is no walk in the park and that her husband sacrifices his time off helping her photograph, edit, record workouts, and strategize for her business.

“We work basically 24/7, which I think is something people don’t think about. People see the fun, ‘Yay! I’m going here and it’s lovely!’ But it’s nonstop…nights and weekends and everything.”
Dunlop’s financial success and popularity may have stemmed in part from the fact that she is offering more to her followers than sponsored posts. Although she does work with brands frequently, she also regularly turns down brands that don’t align with her message.
“At the end of the day, I have to be real because that is who I am and I understand how deep it goes and how much of an emotional thing [weight loss] can be for women. I want to make sure I am always being true to that and expressing that in everything I do. It is really easy to get caught up in seeing what their physical body looks like and then believing that whatever they say or do is going to work for you, like some magic pill.”
In addition to the money she makes working with brands like Lorna Jane, BioClarity, and more, Dunlop has worked tirelessly to create weight loss and nutrition resources she feels proud to sell.

“I have my Hot Body Sweat Guide and Hot Body Meal Plan, I’m getting ready to launch a lifestyle and recipe book. Those are probably the main source of our income. As well as the apparel. I have tanks and water bottles.”
When it comes making money as a brand influencer, Dunlop has set pretty strict rules for Love Sweat Fitness. She does have ongoing brand partnerships that provide her with regular income, but says:
“I’m super picky and particular, especially when it comes to anything that is food or beverage related. Even with clothing, I’m very picky about the brands I work with because… I know there are a lot of companies out there that have a ton of money. It is tempting to want to work with them but at the end of the day, I have to put my beliefs first. So, the brand partnerships are a smaller part of what we do.”

A Day in the Life

“Throughout the week it can change constantly, whether it’s jumping to different events, going to film different shoots for collaborations with collaborations like PopSugar… In general, it’s a lot of time online.”
Although she knows many might believe her life is spent working out all day, that isn’t the case. Instead, Dunlop spends a lot of her time reading and responding to comments on YouTube and Instagram, which she believes is essential to nurturing her community of followers. She also spends a lot of her time brainstorming content and putting together blog posts.

When it comes to maintaining her own fitness, it really isn’t as time consuming as many outsiders might assume. For Dunlop, working out only takes up between 30 and 45 minutes of each day.

The Truth Behind the Shot

Dunlop spends a lot of time in front the camera. She is constantly shooting content for her blog and Instagram and shares that she and her husband work hard keep a large library of original photos available for use online.

Additionally, each brand partnership or collaboration means a new photo shoot. Sometimes these are photo shoots she and her husband have planned, other times they are photo shoots with magazines or online publications.
“I do a lot of workout creations for brands like Lorna Jane or Fabletics, and so part of that will be creating workouts and doing photos for their blogs or for their social channels of the different workouts, exercises, and movements.”
Getting the right shot is a lot of work. Dunlop isn’t afraid to admit that Instagram is a visual platform and that her feed is curated to look pleasing to the eye.

Just like anyone else, Dunlop is always putting her best foot forward on her Instagram feed. At the same time, since she prioritizes being authentic, she has found ways to strike a healthy balance so her followers can see more of her “real life.”
“I think the creation of platforms like Snapchat and now Instagram having the story, has provided a really great opportunity…for people to be able to see the daily, messy bun, here I am just working on the computer.”
Dunlop and her husband–photographer work hard to get beautiful shots for her Instagram feed, blog, and workouts. There are many times when entire weekend outings are centered around getting shots of her on the beach, hanging out with friends, or wearing new gear from a brand partnership.

At the same time, there is a big difference between styling a photo by posing with props and heavily editing a photo to cover up the truth. For Dunlop, putting her authentic self out there is a standard she simple isn’t willing to budge on just to get more likes or a chance to team up with a bigger brand.
“Of course, I want to put pretty pictures up, but that is more to help inspire people. But I don’t edit photos except for making sure you can see them and they’re well lit. I’ve never gone down that road because I think, at the end of the day, it always comes out, you don’t feel good, and it’s not authentic. People are going to see through that and it’s just not worth it.”

Another Nightmare? Here Are The 4 Things You're Doing That Can Cause Bad Dreams

A single hair is growing from the center of my tongue again. It is wiry and impossibly long. It dangles out of my mouth and gets caught in my crumbling teeth. I try to pluck the hair. It hurts, but its root is attached much deeper down than my tongue. It goes down to my core, in fact. If I pull it out I will die.
There is a dark presence in the room. It watches me struggle with my tongue hair and disintegrating dental work. If I can scream loud enough, the stranger will not harm me. I fill my lungs. I bellow…
HealthyWay
And find myself transported back to my bedroom, where my wife has just kicked and nudged me awake. It’s the wee hours of the morning and I sense myself hyperventilating.
“Was I screaming?” I pant.
“No. You were going, ‘Myeh.'” She offers a pathetic bleating, the complaint of a scrawny goat as opposed to an adult human determined to live.
“No way,” I say. “That was a scream. A shriek. This was a night terror.”
“No,” she corrects me. “You don’t wake up during night terrors. You generally don’t remember the content of a night terror episode.”
HealthyWay
I later check Mayo Clinic and Sleep.org. My wife’s right—again.
We decide to call it a scream dream. It’s become the subject of some contention in our household.
Sometimes I have several scream dreams a week. Other times months go by without a single instance. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, I find myself bleating into my pillow again. Of course, within the dream, I’m letting out a mighty wail.

The Stuff Nightmares Are Made of

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF), a healthcare advocacy group, recently published a list of common causes of nightmares (which are, remember, distinct from “sleep terrors” or “night terrors”).
It reads like a checklist of my not-so-commendable lifestyle decisions. No wonder I have scream dreams.
Causes of nightmares in adults, according to the NSF, may include:
1. Feeling more stress than usual. Extreme forms of stress, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders, can certainly cause nightmares.
HealthyWay
So can periods of increased non-pathological stress, such as a promotion at work or a serious life change.
2. Sleep deprivation. Oddly enough, your brain’s reward for finally getting a bit of the rest it so desperately needs can be terrible nightmares.
HealthyWay
This, of course, can lead to even less sleep. It’s a tough cycle to break.
3. Late-night snacks. Sorry, but I feel like I have to quote Dickens here: “You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato,” Scrooge tells Marley’s ghost in A Christmas Carol. “There’s more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!”
HealthyWay
Scrooge’s reasoning is solid, even if he happens to be wrong about this particular ghost. Eating boosts your metabolism, which boosts your brain activity, which can lead to nightmares.
4. Certain prescription medications, such as antidepressants. If you notice changes in your sleep patterns or have more nightmares after a change in your medication, talk to your healthcare providers about it. They might be able to suggest a workaround.
That’s the word from the professionals.
Now, my advice: If you find a six-foot, wiry hair growing from the center of your tongue, don’t try to pluck it. To do so might cost you your life.
Also, know that what sounds like a blood-curdling scream inside your dream might sound a bit less impressive to your spouse, kids, or roommate.

4 Factors That Could Result In A False Positive Pregnancy Test

When you need to know the results of a pregnancy test, the last thing you want to worry about is accuracy.
Fortunately, home pregnancy tests have a pretty good track record. They’re 97 percent accurate, according to Parents magazine.
Surprisingly, though, the most common cause of “false positives” isn’t false at all, Lanalee Araba Sam, an OB-GYN from Fort Lauderdale, told Parents.
HealthyWay
“Some women can get a positive pregnancy test and then three days after their period is due, they have a really heavy period,” Sam said. “Really what they’ve had is an early miscarriage called a chemical pregnancy, and a lot of people call that a false positive. They don’t recognize it as a positive pregnancy test that ultimately results in miscarriage.”
The truth is, home pregnancy tests detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG. The body releases hCG after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall and a placenta begins to form.
Beyond early miscarriages, there are a few factors that can cause a truly false positive reading—some of which account for the 3 percent of tests that show inaccurate results. While they’re rare, they can be devastating (or anxiety inducing) for women and couples.
Here are a few possible causes of this infrequent event:

1. Prescriptions make a difference.

The medications you take can affect the outcome of a home pregnancy test, especially if you’re taking any kind of fertility medication. This can be particularly frustrating because couples using fertility medications are often the ones with highest hopes for conception.
HealthyWay
hCG trigger shots like Novarel, Pregnyl, Ovidrel, and Profasi cause the release of mature eggs, and if a test is taken too soon, you can get a false reading.
Other medications can cause incorrect results as well. Antianxiety, antipsychotic, anticonvulsant, and diuretic medications are known to affect the outcomes of home pregnancy tests.

2. Past Pregnancies

Sometimes an egg will become fertilized but does not attach to the uterine wall. As we mentioned earlier, this is called a “chemical pregnancy.” A woman won’t usually know she experienced a chemical pregnancy unless she takes a pregnancy test very early—for example, before a missed period.
HealthyWay
Chemical pregnancies account for 50 to 75 percent of all miscarriages.
Healthcare professionals suggest waiting at least one week after your expected period before taking any kind of at-home test to avoid a reading that tells more about something that happened in the past than what you should prepare for in the future.

3. Pregnancies Outside the Uterus

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg attaches someplace other than the uterus, like a fallopian tube, the cervix, or an ovary. An embryo cannot survive anywhere outside the uterus, so ectopic pregnancies aren’t viable. However, as long as the fertilized egg is growing, your body will continue to produce hCG, which will result in a positive pregnancy test.
HealthyWay
An ectopic pregnancy is a serious medical emergency that can lead to severe blood loss and damage to (or even loss of) reproductive organs. Some symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy are nausea, sore breasts, light to heavy spotting or bleeding, dizziness, fainting, or pressure on your rectum.
If you think you may be experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, seek medical help immediately.

4. User Error

At-home pregnancy tests are convenient, but they aren’t flawless. It’s important to check the expiration date and follow all instructions exactly when using a test.
HealthyWay
It’s also important to take the test first thing in the morning. hCG is the most concentrated the first time you go to the bathroom after waking up, which will ensure more accurate test results.
Taking a test too early in your cycle or waiting too long to check the results of the test can also give you false information. If you’ve taken a test but still don’t feel confident about the results, you can go to your doctor to have a blood test performed.
HealthyWay
Ultimately, your doctor isn’t nearly as likely to make a mistake when it comes to whether you’re expecting.

Your Daily Commute Could Be Toxic, Especially If You Aren't Doing This

Have you ever considered the irony of the treadmill, the stationary bicycle, or the rowing machine? More than 85 percent of Americans drive to work, with an average commute of 26 minutes in each direction. Then some pay for a membership and drive to the gym to re-enact travel on stationary equipment.
At first glance, this seems absurd. It’s like opting to watch a rom-com instead of falling in love. But maybe the cardio folks are onto something. Maybe you don’t want to get your exercise during your commute. After all, the gym does have one thing over the highway: The air is much cleaner.
HealthyWay
Rush hour pumps up the pollution. Sitting in traffic causes automobiles to belch out twice as much nitrogen dioxide, three times as many hydrocarbons, and quadruple the amount of carbon monoxide compared to cruising on the open road. All that braking and accelerating brings out the worst in an internal combustion engine.
The result is that you may be sitting in a toxic stew every time you drive to and from work. Exposure to air pollution has been associated with asthma and other respiratory diseases, heart problems, and premature morbidity. It’s sick stuff—and unless you follow the advice of a team of Washington University aerosol scientists, that smog is getting into your car, where you gulp it down with every breath.

This simple trick will help you cut down on exposure to pollutants while you’re in your car.

The October 2017 issue of the journal Atmospheric Environment features the research of Anna Leavey, Nathan Reed, Sameer Patel, and colleagues in a piece charmingly titled “Comparing on-road real-time simultaneous in-cabin and outdoor particulate and gaseous concentrations for a range of ventilation scenarios.”
HealthyWay
The researchers measured air quality both inside and outside of a car that study participants drove to work. Sometimes they left the windows open. Sometimes they closed the windows and ran the fan. Other times they closed the windows and turned on the air conditioning.
After four months of this, they crunched the numbers and came to a straightforward conclusion.
HealthyWay
“Car drivers can expect their highest exposures [to air pollution] when driving with windows open or the fan on, and their lowest exposures during windows closed or the AC on.”
Why, though? Reed, one of the authors of the paper, explained the situation to Science Daily.
HealthyWay
“The AC is pulling outside air, running through the same filter with the same ventilation path as the fan,” he said. “But there’s one difference: when the AC is operating: You have a cold evaporator that is cooling the air as it passes. …This cold surface attracts the pollutant particles, and they deposit there, as opposed to diffusing it into the air you’re breathing.”
Running the air conditioning dropped pollutant levels inside the cab of the car tested by 20 to 34 percent, Science Daily reports. Beyond rolling up the windows and opting to turn on the air, it seems like the next step is eliminating fossil fuels entirely.
HealthyWay
Imagine a new kind of gym membership: Rather than a keychain fob to swipe at the door, your trainer assigns you a bicycle or hands you a pair of running shoes—and takes your car keys. Imagine if everyone who is physically able to ride a bike or go jogging were to join this gym. Now that would cut down on air pollution.

5 Women Reflect On Living Childfree By Choice

If you were born female, chances are you’ve been asked—probably many times—how many children you want to have. The concepts of womanhood and motherhood are so fused in the collective human psyche that a woman choosing not to have children continues to elicit responses that range from perplexed and suspicious to incredulous and sometimes even hostile.

According to Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, as of 2014, 15 percent of American women ages 40 to 44 had not given birth to any children. Included in this group are women who adopted and women who wanted children but for some reason ended up not having any.

But often overlooked or caricatured are the women who’ve made a conscious decision to live their lives childfree. The notion that a woman might have dreams, fears, and interests that don’t align with motherhood still confounds many, but its reality is nothing new.

HealthyWay

Hearing these perspectives is important, not only for the sake of girls and women whose desires don’t align with the pervasive “women should have babies” narrative (and the men who remain inclined to view women’s humanity as directly proportionate to their maternal functions) but also, at least insofar as women’s worth continues to be measured by their participation in biological motherhood, for the sake of humanity.

Read on for accounts of women ages 40 and over who have chosen not to have children.

“Workplaces are increasingly inflexible and are not allowing people to be humans and care for their families.”

Alixandra Foisy is a Virginia-based licensed clinical social worker and registered yoga teacher. “I chose not to have children because I know that one must completely devote themselves to their children in order to do it well,” she says.

HealthyWay

While she admires those who are doing just that, she says she chose to be childfree based on how she prefers to spend her time and energy and her understanding of the economy and workplaces policies.

“I care for others through the work I do as a clinical social worker and did not want to come home and not have enough left over for my kids,” says Foisy. Once home, she enjoys the freedom to focus on spending time with her spouse. “I love my husband and am so happy and grateful that we found each other.”

Having a child is also expensive. “Wages have been stagnant and low for a long time and it is nearly impossible to save for my own life, let alone financially care for another life,” says Foisy.

Further incentive to skip having kids is the fact that the United States is still way behind much of the rest of the world when it comes to policies that protect people’s rights to care properly for children and sick loved ones.

HealthyWay

“My spouse and I live far away from family and it truly does take more than just the parents to care for children,” she says. “Workplaces are increasingly inflexible and are not allowing people to be humans and care for their families. I don’t want that to be an added stress in my life.”

“I’ve never woken up one day in my life wishing I had kids.”

“I am 52 and never wanted children,” says Paige Arnof-Fenn, founder and CEO of the marketing consulting firm Mavens and Moguls.

“I’ve been married 25 years and have never woken up one day in my life wishing I had kids,” she reflects.

HealthyWay

“I love my nieces, nephews, and godkids (three of each, nine in all) and have been involved in all of their lives, but always love sending them home too!”

“As an idealist, the reality of what and who we are has fallen far short of my expectations.”

Brandy Stark, PhD, a 42-year-old professor of religions and humanities at St. Petersburg College in Florida, says her choice not to have children was “a major decision.”

“I am the only child descended from two other generations of only children. This means that I am, quite literally, the end of the family line on my father’s side,” she says. “I have no siblings, have yet to marry, and my only living relative is my mother.”

HealthyWay

Stark knew early on that this was her path. “I believe that it was a good decision. I see the turbulence of today’s world, its instability and tensions,” she says. “I’m not sure I’d want to bring a child up in this world. As an idealist, the reality of
what and who we are has fallen far short of my expectations.”

She’s enjoyed the freedom this decision has granted her to do what she wants with her time. Not having children has allowed her to focus full-force on her career and education.

HealthyWay

Her career has allowed her to make her mark on the world. “I work with young adults on a daily basis,” she says, “so I am still shaping the future generations.”

“My sole purpose in life isn’t to just bear children.”

Ki “Tini” Jones is a 40-year-old personal trainer based in Maryland. As a girl, she wanted to get married and have children—”two boys and a girl to be exact”—and the pressure to procreate was intensified by the fact that she was the only daughter and niece in a large family of boys.

But, moving through her early 20s changed her perspective. “I quickly realized that I was just getting to know the ‘adult’ me,” she says. “I wanted to focus on career, travel, and experienc[ing] things.”

HealthyWay

Meanwhile, she observed the changes that children brought and became more certain of her decision. “People around me were having children and dynamics of friendships were changing,” she says.

“Most of the people that had kids said they undoubtedly loved their kids but often complained like they were being saddled down. I began to enjoy not having the responsibility and it allowed me to focus on myself.”

Though she did marry, she says her now ex-husband got a vasectomy before they even dated.

Jones’ decision has not always been received without pushback. “My mom would often drop baby hints and even once said I was selfish not to have kids,” she recalls. “I told her I thought it would be selfish to have kids and not be the best mother I could be to them.”

Her concern that she might feel burdened by—and thus neglect—her own children is no indication of her feelings toward children generally. “People think because I chose not to have children I don’t like them and that’s the furthest from the truth,” she says.

“I love their curiosity and energy!” She often volunteers with organizations like Living Classrooms, which allows her to work with children.

HealthyWay

Jones says she doesn’t allow anyone to make her feel “less than” as a woman for her decision not to have kids. “There are many facets to ‘mothering’ that don’t involve carrying a child. I’m a nurturer, a caregiver, a lover, a friend, a mentor, and an influencer,” she says.

“There is so much more to womanhood than bearing children. My sole purpose in life isn’t to just bear children.”

Her life’s purpose, she says, is “far greater than my womb.”

“I saw kids and all the things they need as clutter.”

Dating and relationship transformation expert Lisa Concepcion is a 46-year-old entrepreneur who helps people shape their love lives. She says determining at age 31 not to have children was the best decision of her life.

“I was married when I made this decision,” she says. “I felt that society pressures us into checking off the common to do list of life, which says: married by 30 (check), homeowner shortly after (check), six-figure income (check), kids and nannies in the ‘burbs (enter screech sound of brakes).”

“I was raised by very controlling parents so I saw marriage as a badge of adulthood,” she says.

“I lived at home after college until I was 26 and moved out six months before my wedding. Reveling in my freedom and a deep desire for my own space, the last thing I wanted was clutter, and I saw kids and all the things they need (strollers, baby seat, childproofed home, bottles, food, diapers and on and on) as clutter.”

HealthyWay

Through her practice, LoveQuest Coaching, Concepcion has seen that, along with chores and schedules, parenting is one of the top contributors to relationship stress. “They feel their lives revolve around kids,” she says.

“This was something I saw when my own friends started to have kids when we were in our early thirties. The interesting [thing] to note is that despite my then-husband’s dual income, no kids, [and] freedom to do what we wanted, we were still confined to the cookie-cutter mindset of 9 to 6 slavery and long commutes to and from jobs that never spoke to our passions.”

“This misalignment sadly led to realizing we were out of connection with ourselves.” After 17 years of marriage, they divorced.

She tells this story to point out that “childfreedom doesn’t make a couple divorce proof.”

She teaches that without proper self-love, an undue burden is often placed on one or both spouses to make the other happy. “Thank GOD I didn’t have kids,” she says.

“Unlike a spouse, I wouldn’t be able to divorce my kids.”

She now describes herself as “blissfully childfree” and in a relationship with a 52-year-old who is also childfree. The couple lives in the South Beach area of Miami, Florida.

HealthyWay

“We enjoy ourselves and live what we call a vacay-life while most people our age are stressing out over their kids’ college exams and tuition,” she says.

“My boyfriend and I are thinking about where we’re going for happy hour and how I can create coaching programs I can teach from my chaise lounge on my terrace.”
