A Paralyzed Woman Became a Fashion Designer and Revolutionized the Way of Jeans Forever!

Every day someone undergoes a life-altering experience, whether positive or negative. From the time we wake up and fall asleep, our world could quite possibly take an 180-degree turn, and that’s exactly what happened for Heidi McKenzie. Heidi was your everyday girl who enjoyed sports and other recreations. However, her life came to a halt in 2007 when she suffered injuries from a severe accident, paralyzing her from the waist down. Fortunately, she was the recipient of positivity and well-wishes as her support group aided in her mental discovery, but Heidi had one long-lasting qualm that couldn’t be solved through therapy or kind words – fashion. Heidi had already been a creative and fashion forward woman so when she realized her style choices were rather limited, specifically in finding pants that were both stylish and comfortable, she was not impressed.

“Being adaptive and functional is what sells to those in wheelchairs so that is the main focus … cute is not a priority,” Heidi states.

She knew that the majority of clothing wear for people in wheelchairs was catered toward the elderly, so skinny jeans or extreme flares are never an option when she’s on the market for a new outfit. As she was mulling this over she went on to graduate college, engage in various volunteer organizations, and she even won a beauty pageant! She was still in the fast lane in almost every aspect except for her jeans, and it finally became too much.

More than 3 million people are in wheelchairs in the United States alone, so Heidi decided to be the spokesperson for young Millennials that knew their life was only different by the chair they relied upon. Heidi partnered with designer Kristin Alexandra Tidwell to create jeans that are fashion-forward, comfortable, and easily accessible for people in wheelchairs. She titled it “Alter Ur Ego” and started a Kickstarter campaign that immediately took off raising more than 20k. They began creating jeans that have since been a wild success. These jeans look like your everyday pair, however, there is a comfortable elastic band that holds your stomach in since it’s impossible to suck in, and no one likes an unwanted pooch! The pockets are easier to access with them being placed lower on the leg and the cut is higher in the back so you don’t have any unwanted skin peeking through. The last invention is pure genius  – they manufactured an invisible catheter opening to avoid embarrassment yet still maintain the much-needed accessibility.

Heidi is an inspiration to us all as she continues to look forward in life and pursue her love for designing items that people, who are in a similar situation as herself, can utilize. Her positivity and resolve is something we could all use a little more of in this world!

How Long Is Too Long To Sit At Your Desk Each Work Day?

Standing desks are the ultimate divider between coveted jobs and those that are just…bleh. I’m obviously being facetious, but it does ring fairly true. Standing desks will (hopefully) be a norm in the future. Americans are incredibly sedentary, and sitting for at least an eight-hour workday is doing nothing to help combat the ever-increasing obesity problem.

But what is the appropriate amount of standing time that you should be getting in per day?

A few months ago I came across an article on Facebook; I’ve since attempted to go back and find it but to no avail. Basically, it was a witty piece of prose where a man decided he was going to stand for 30 days to be healthier. Obviously he would lie down for sleep and sit while driving, but otherwise he was pretty consistent in his standing. His story was fairly humorous, but it made my back hurt just thinking about it. The first few days started off well enough, but soon his feet began to suffer. The maladies just kept piling up until he ultimately had to go to his physician’s office for all of his pain, which leads me to my point. There is a line between being healthy and standing up at work and just being in overkill mode.

Why Prolonged Sitting Is Bad News

After a long bout in bed or on the couch, I feel mildly guilty, mostly because I just wasted time, but partially because I was being so sedentary. Since entering the workforce, I’ve made sure to consistently keep up with exercising and using my standing desk. However, on those days that I don’t feel motivated to stand I feel pretty gross leaving the office. It’s amazing what sitting down for most of the day can do to you. It decreases my energy level trifold and makes me rather unproductive for the rest of the day. This feeling I have isn’t just my imagination; widespread studies have indicated this type of feeling is the social norm for those in the workforce.

Just look at the wide range of negative health issues that stem from sitting during the entire workday:

Organ damage Heart damage and an overproductive pancreas have been attributed to sedentary lifestyles. When you’re sitting at your desk and then proceed to come home and rest, your blood flow becomes sluggish, which results in fatty acids clogging the heart. This leads to higher cholesterol and overall cardiovascular issues.

Muscle deterioration When you slouch in your chair your abs are not being engaged in any way, therefore they begin to deteriorate and become rather nonexistent. Hips also become stiff, and your glutes are not engaged at all so your stride will suffer, causing overall bodily aches and pains.

Bad back This is a rather common problem because most of us aren’t sitting properly. Many of us will slouch forward, which ultimately gives us back problems and causes herniated disks. It also causes stiff, painful necks and chronic shoulder pain.

Restless legs When your legs are not regularly engaged, circulation problems ensue, especially as you grow older. Your bones have a higher chance of breaking because they are not being used.

If you have to sit, experts recommend sitting with upright posture, relaxing your shoulders, and not leaning forward. Keeping your elbows bent to a comfortable 90 degrees with your arms in tight to your body will reduce problems as well. Also, make sure that you’re doing activities outside of work instead of just going home to continue your daily sitting routine. However, some researchers have even claimed that exercising before or after work may not reverse the effects of extended sitting in the workplace (Washington Post).

Tips To Properly Standing

If your goal is to start standing up at work, you need to do this gradually. Aim for roughly two hours a day with little breaks in between until your body gets used to it. Next, attempt to move up to four hours; this should be your maximum amount of standing time. Try switching up your posture every 30 minutes, as this helps rev up your metabolism.

“It’s all about mixing it up,” said Gavin Bradley, director of Active Working, an international group aimed at reducing excessive sitting. “Metabolism slows down 90 percent after 30 minutes of sitting. The enzymes that move the bad fat from your arteries to your muscles, where it can get burned off, slow down. The muscles in your lower body are turned off. And after two hours, good cholesterol drops 20 percent. Just getting up for five minutes is going to get things going again. These things are so simple they’re almost stupid.”

Health experts say that this four-hour standing time is just a starting point and will evolve with time and more study. Many people and workplaces want to know the scientific viewpoint on what is an appropriate amount of standing time, but more specific recommendations will come in the future. Nutritionists are hopeful that standing in the workplace will combat the growing health risks that many adults are beginning to incur with near-constant sitting. It appears that sedentary workers have more than twice the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and a 13 percent increased risk of cancer. These are startling numbers that are only increasing (Washinton Post).

People who have begun suffering from these diseases and have started implementing more standing into their daily routine have found positive effects that are essentially reversing their disease, which is an even more persuasive reason for introducing standing desks nationwide. Ikea is now selling an office-friendly standing desk that is quite affordable.

Even if you don’t have a standing desk yet, there are other alternatives for getting up at the office: Take business calls standing up, walk down the block to get some fresh air during a bathroom break, or even stand in the back of meetings.

The health benefits of standing are undisputable, so it’s best to start switching up your work routine sooner rather than later.

SpendMoney Making Memories, Not Collecting Toys

When you were a child, what’s your fondest memory? Was it playing with your stuffed animals in your play area? It very well could have been if you had one of those faithful puppy’s who were with you through the thick and thin. But what about that family vacation you took to Disney World, or that time you went to Niagra Falls and felt the mist tickling your cheeks? That was pretty incredible…kind of beats out the 30th stuffed animal you received for your 6th birthday, doesn’t it?  Now flash forward to present day. Let’s compare your last trip to Greece with the $700 you just spent on new clothes. Just think, that bundle of change could have been a round trip ticket to a new vacay spot… Pretty depressing, huh?

A lot of our habits form when we’re barely cognizant of the world around us. As children, we look up to our parents and mimic their actions and personalities. If your mother or father places high importance on status and material goods then chances are you’re going to imitate this lifestyle and mind frame. Consequently, if/when you become a parent your actions will be mirrored by your offspring as well.

But why exactly is it important to collect experiences and not things? Research suggests that experiential purchases have a higher rate for providing a more enduring and long-lasting happiness than materials. This investigation does not lie solely in the outcome of the experience or the eventual attainment of the possession, but it deals with anticipation as well. Waiting for experiences tends to bring about more happiness than waiting for a possession. Living in the moment is something that we are not able to practice every day, so looking forward towards a future event replaces that desire  (Psychological Science).

Cornell doctoral candidate Amit Kumar describes excitement and impending anticipation like this: “You can think about waiting for a delicious meal at a nice restaurant or looking forward to a vacation and how different that feels from waiting for, say, your pre-ordered iPhone to arrive. Or when the two-day shipping on Amazon Prime doesn’t seem fast enough” (The Atlantic).

Personally, I’m completely in line with the mentality that I’d rather save my money for travel than for a new patio set. However, the question does remain – wouldn’t you be happier with something that’s long lasting and that you could use every day rather than an experience that may only last a week? Unfortunately, once a routine occurs, even that car you’ve needed so badly becomes obsolete. You become used to its everyday presence and take it for granted/don’t look upon it quite as fondly as you initially did. However, have you ever reminisced on your backpacking trip through Germany with anything less than fondness? Even when something goes wrong on a vacation you can usually make light of it during the time, and, if not, years down the road you’re able to laugh at the bad turn of luck you may have incurred. Other times, such as being stranded at an airport, you can bond with your friends and family members in ways that you couldn’t even imagine prior. However, when your shipment for the latest Xbox is delayed two weeks there is never going to be a time where you’ll look back and be glad it was late. It just isn’t going to happen.

Another study revealed that there are two types of transactions and each one has drastically different results. Say  you’re in line for a Justin Timberlake concert. Chances are you’re going to strike up conversations with those around you and possibly make friends with them for the rest of the evening. There’s no competition involved because everyone is going to have relatively the same enjoyable experience, and there’s nothing to be gained by being rude to someone. However, let’s take Black Friday for instance. You hear these horror stories where people are trampled and injured because someone wants to get that 64 inch TV that’s been reduced a mere 30%. At the end of the day, the satisfaction people are receiving from these type of events are toxic and not lasting (The Atlantic)

Character is built when you’re purchasing events as opposed to toys. These trips and places you travel to, even if it’s just an hour away, builds self-confidence and introduces you to new situations that you would ordinarily not be able to experience. Greed is perpetuated with the constant need to fulfill our consumeristic desires.

I’ll leave you with this, material items are far more fleeting than memories. You’re only going to have your Macbook for five to seven years tops, and then it’s on to the next model. The trip to London you took with your brother is something that only lasts twelve days, yet you’re still talking about it ten years later. Once you’re able to lose your obsession with material items you will feel lighter with better priorities. Try to save for a vacation next time instead of the latest gaming consul. Once you take that trip see how you feel, chances are you’re going to have quite a change in perspective on life.

Homeless Shelter Residents in Atlanta Grow Food and Harvest Hope

In 2009, a Georgia-based homeless shelter started an initiative that has changed hundreds of lives. Metro Atlanta Task Force began constructing and cultivating a rooftop garden to cut costs on food and to introduce valuable life skills to their residents. The beauty behind their program is that the residents themselves were helping harvest delicious natural foods, while learning the fundamentals of gardening. Many of the residents were once in living situations like you and me, but a negative turn of events left them jobless and consequently homeless with not a lot to take pride in, and that’s how this brilliant idea came to fruition.

Metro Atlanta Task Force has a troubled reputation with local politicians threatening expulsion and gentrification. However, when you take a peek on top of their building it’s a gardener’s paradise. It’s not “just a fad,” but has become a way of life for these residents.

The project began in 2006 and now consists of more than 80 raised garden beds. Task Force began developing the concept of a rooftop garden from the architectural aspect to how they would certify their residents who ultimately would put in the time and hours. In 2009, they received a very small grant from Emory University which took their dreams and shaped them into a reality. During the building process, Metro Atlantic Task Force received multiple awards from the city due to their space utilization and the quality of their vegetation. These colorful beds house tomatoes, carrots, watermelon, collard greens, and more.

When they finally opened their roof up in 2009 the residents were overjoyed. They were able to yield crops that appear on their plates every single day, plus the certification from their labors help them become hired at local greeneries propelling them towards a place of their own, once again. The first harvest yielded fifty-five pounds of veggies. Over the year’s they’ve gotten a surge of bees, which has assisted them in creating their own beehives for honey. As their success has spread there has been the talk of expansion to their neighboring building. Blueprints are being drawn up and the directors are thrilled at the impending opportunity. Not only will they have an even larger expansive of vegetation but this means that there’s a new certification project for the residents as well (Vice).

Anita Beaty, executive director of the Metro Atlanta Task Force, shared with Vice their success: “Everything we do is a learning experience and job training for our residents. Part of the conventional way homelessness has been addressed has been to emphasize fixing people instead of the conditions that cause poverty. Homeless people are assumed to be full of deficits. But homelessness is not a blood type; it is the experience of extreme poverty and the experience of people who are chronically excluded from housing. For the garden expansion, like all of our programs, we will use and certify resident labor. Through this, residents get the experience necessary for employment, as well as certification and practical experience.”

More than 400 men, women, and children reside in the shelter and have all helped in the development of the garden in one way or another. Not only are they learning practical lessons, like how to properly fertilize a plant, but they are also building confidence. Homelessness is something that’s filled with shame and sadness, but here they are able to rediscover who they are and avoid being identified by what they are lacking in – a home. Gardening is a magnificent form of self-healing and therapy.

Resident gardener, Romeon Mack, describes gardening like this: “Life can get you down. Nobody wants to be homeless. Being up here, away from everything, really helps you reflect on what you did before in life…this is our real world…at least till we get out. It’s not just the food, man… Dealing with plants is like dealing with people. You have to have other means than fighting. Plants and people both piss you off…[but] you can’t just rip it up or knock it down. Same way you can’t just hit somebody…You learn stuff up here…and you leave a better person. [Gardening], it’s a process. It’s life. It’s just like life” (Vice).

Preparing the residents for a better future is achieved in more ways than one. Although urban rooftop gardens are hip and seem to be something the more sophisticated take time to do, in this situation it’s a very real means for attaining a new lifestyle. They’re able to find themselves again and see themselves in a new and glowing light. Although homelessness and crime riddle this area of Georgia, current residents and employees are hopeful that there will gradually be a shift towards more positive outcomes. They hope the local government will realize the predicament low-income families are placed in and make moves to provide more realistic funding and opportunities for this sector of the city. Take time to read more about this great initiative and think of how you could implement something like this near you. (Real Farmacy).

14-Year-Old Amputee Ignites Global Support For Disabled Athletes

Ben Baltz, now 14-years-old, was tragically diagnosed with osteosarcoma at age six. His parents were devastated by the news and even more chagrined when doctors informed them that the only way to effectively treat the cancer was through amputation. A whirlwind quickly ensued, especially since osteosarcoma is such an unpublicized disease, that was ultimately filled with hope and strength.

The What

Osteosarcoma is a bone cancer that occurs in approximately 3% of children. It’s a fairly aggressive cancer which begins within the bone and then spreads, sometimes even latching onto the lungs. Osteosarcoma develops from the osteoblasts, which are the cells that assist bone growth. Occasionally, there will be a defect within the DNA causing cancer to form and spread. Typically osteosarcoma is seen in children who have recently gone through a growth spurt as the osteoblasts are raging during this time. It’s fairly easy to recognize this disease as your child’s limb will begin to swell or break due to the weakening of the bone. Treatment is fairly aggressive with chemotherapy being the go-to solution followed by a surgery to remove the affected bone, culminating in a final round of chemo. In many cases, the surgery is fairly conservative, but there are times, as seen in Ben’s case, where amputation is the only option (Kids Health).

Burst of Hope

That’s where Ben comes in. At age six, Ben had to undergo a surgery that most of us will never experience or fully understand. Not even knowing what cancer was, six-year-old Ben had his lower right leg amputated. For a very active child, this could have been crippling both mentally and physically. However, Ben found a deep well of strength, and a year later he received the greatest gift of all – a prosthetic. And from that moment forward he has dipped in and out of the spotlight: befriending a three-legged pony, being carried across a finish line when his prosthetic failed, and, most recently, holding his father’s hand as he competed in his tenth triathlon.

Because of his viral popularity, he has been able to impact countless children and adults across the globe. Not only has he survived his battle with cancer, but he’s thriving and growing in the sports arena.

“I never thought I would ever get cancer — never had heard of cancer until I got it — and never thought I would be able to keep participating in triathlons,” Ben said. “But all of those came out to be true and here I am — cured of cancer, running, biking, swimming and even surfing. My amputation hasn’t stopped me, or even slowed me down. It only brought me obstacles, all of which I have overcome” (Today).

If that’s not some inspirational 14-year-old wisdom, then I don’t know what is. Ben’s father, JC, describes his son as being an inspiration not only to disabled athletes but to himself as well. There is nothing more motivating than pushing through a vigorous run and not giving up because you know that someone out there has it worse off than you, yet they are still able to persevere and succeed.

About That Photo

In 2013, Ben and JC were competing in a triathlon when it began pouring down rain. Ben was starting to feel fatigued as he was racing up a hill. In a moment of pure effort and exhaustion, JC grasped his son’s hand to give him the added boost he needed to conquer that slippery slope. That’s when the viral photo of Ben and JC was captured and since then it has resurfaced sparking the conversation of prosthetics. Ben and thousands of other people have been able to live everyday lives, filled with sports and other recreational activities. The necessity of health coverage for these amazing prosthetics has never been more crucial. What better gift could a person receive than the ability to continue living their lives normally? Ben has confronted many obstacles but never once has he given up. Even in this time of spotlight he continues to shy away from the camera, directing the attention to all of the other children and adults who deserve just as much admiration as he himself has received. This boy is one amazing human and gives us amazing hope for our future in both medicine and technology.

The Art of Loving Unconditionally

Love, when your northern star becomes embodied in someone’s flesh. It’s passionate, angry, ever-changing, and worth it.

Love goes through stages- some filled with energy and others with contentment. But the three basic stages have transcended time and philosophy: Romantic, realistic, and content love.

When you get hit by Cupid’s arrow you can hardly see straight. You’re sickeningly in love (consequently making everyone else feeling wildly uncomfortable). This “honeymoon phase” can last for days, weeks, even years, but inevitably that high will wear off. Some find this terrifyingly depressing, whereas, once you hit this point, this explanation becomes incredibly reassuring. However, you’re inevitably going to grapple with the decision: do you keep going down this path together or do you split your separate ways? Neither one is a bad decision, but if you do decide to stick together you better be prepared for some grueling challenges.

Generation Y

Loving someone consistently requires effort. When you’ve come down from your “love sick” high you realize that giving back rubs and going to all of their favorite movies doesn’t come quite as easily. Being a Generation Y adult has taught me that romance should be fast and furious. When things stop feeling good it’s best to drop it and move to the next one. Why? Because we’re young, life is short, and why settle when you can have something even better? This image seemed so glittering and bright during college. Why yes, I should be treated better. CYA! I began to even title my serial dating as a feminist act; I’m not putting up with your insensitivity and lack of attention. I graduated college and held that same mind frame as I entered the workforce, but, as often comes with time, I realized that this glittering and bright idea was becoming dulled and tarnished. I was beginning to see that this instant gratification plan wasn’t working quite so well for me.

Loving Unconditionally

Love is hard, and what’s even harder is loving unconditionally. The art of loving varies from person to person, but at its core is an understanding that love is a two party system. It’s filled with compromise and trust. There will be times, more times than you care to count, that someone will hurt you, whether intentional or unintentional. Yet displaying your love, through thick and thin, is quite possibly more moving than the sweetest word or the softest kiss.

Being slow to anger is a perfect testament to the respect you hold for your partner. You may have quite a storm raging within, but when you practice and exude a state of clarity you’re reinforcing your commitment in being understanding and patient.

Forgiveness is another tactic you can implement. Sometimes it may be for something small, like forgetting to take out the trash, and at other times it may be for something huge, like cheating. Whatever it is, if you’re able to muster up forgiveness, or at least a veneer of forgiveness until you’ve had more time to process, your love will be heard at an incredible volume.

However, loving unconditionally isn’t just based upon actions it’s also your mental state of mind. Equip yourself with the knowledge that there may be times when you want to quit, but it’s important to remember the good times amidst the bad. Don’t let abandonment be an option. Having an accessible way out tends to stifle any sort of real effort. Expectations and standards are necessary, but it’s crucial that these expectations aren’t unattainable. If so, you’re setting YOURSELF up for failure as you will never be satisfied.

We’re Not Perfect

When I hear of loving unconditionally it sounds to me like it is only attainable for those who are able to love without any faults or hiccups, but loving unconditionally is not synonymous to being a perfect lover. There have been many times where I have been guilty of exploding on my partner or becoming increasingly aggravated at the way the toothbrush is placed in the medicine cabinet. The art behind loving unconditionally is the intentions you set for yourself. No matter how many times you may become irritated you keep pushing through and realize that we’re all human. Loving unconditionally can be found in our sincere attempts to do what makes our partner happy and being quick to admit personal flaws. If we have failures than our person is going to have them too.

So, how can you love unconditionally? Never give up, keep yourself vulnerable, and be honest with yourself and your person. If you’re able to love your partner at their worst that is the ultimate symbol of genuine love. Letting go of their flaws and embracing the big and little things that make them who they are will skyrocket your relationship from a realistic love to one that’s filled with contentment.

A Guide To Recycling Better Than Your Neighbor

Blue bins line the street as I step out the door for work. My neighbors so diligently recycle, and, consequently, I had felt the peer pressure and began to do it myself. At first it turned into my second trashcan. Things I was a little unsure of I’d toss in there because, why not? I mean if it looks recyclable it probably is…right? However, I recently tried to get rid of my broken Swiffer. It’s plastic, and plastic is recyclable, but to my dismay they completely refused my trash deposits for the week. I didn’t understand, maybe it was a glitch, but everyone else had their trash cans already stowed away for the week. Little did I know that there were strict and specific rules for recycling. As I became more informed I felt vaguely annoyed that I wasn’t able to recycle everything that was biodegradable, it seemed like such a waste. However, recycling organizations were emphatic if not overly persistent that this was the only way considering most recycling plants have switched sorting over to machines. Okay, okay I’ll give them that.

But you know what’s an even bigger shame? How so many recyclable materials are scrapped because they haven’t properly been thrown away or emptied. Or, god forbid, someone had attempted to sneak in unrecyclable material…just for fun? Why intentionally put something in a recycling bin that you know isn’t going to fly with the recycling department? So, let’s all set down our hypodermic needles and take a seat. Below I’ve listed a few sweet and salty tips on what you can and can’t do while recycling (Washington Post).

Remove That Pizza Box

Yeah, you read that right. No. Pizza. Boxes. Allowed. When I first read this my mind was blown. Kaboom! Well, the reason behind why is pretty incredible. Evidently, food is one of the greatest foes to the recycling industry, specifically for paper products. Paper is recycled by having water mixed with it eventually turning it into a nice wet slurry. Now let’s go back to elementary school, or even back to your dinner last night. Water and oil don’t mix, just take a look at your vinaigrette if you’re still unconvinced. I’m assuming you see the issue. Grease from pizza boxes (oil) prevents the slurry from forming causing chunks of cardboard to be floating around the slurry. This is not great news for recycling manufacturers. Even though many of your pizza boxes claim to be recyclable, technically they are before the pizza is placed within, just use a rule of thumb and trash it the traditional way (Recyclebank).

Clearly, just because something is technically recyclable doesn’t mean it fits America’s recycling qualifications. Take for example Christmas tree lights, can you imagine what a tangly mess that can make for a recycling machine? Unfortunately, recycling processes are still being developed so until they’ve become perfect follow the rules!

Avoid Helping

Although this is a bit tongue in cheek it’s also true. Recycling plants do NOT want you bagging your recyclables. They have to rip apart every bag to inspect the items making sure they don’t contain prohibited contents that will damage the machinery further down the conveyer belt. Also, those bags have a tendency to get all caught up in the machinery, clogging the machinery, and forcing employees to shut down the system for hours while they handpick bags from the machine’s levers. A lot of times team members don’t have time to sift through each bag so perfectly recyclable material may just be tossed into a landfill to avoid slowing down the recycling process (Washington Post).

No Need To Quench Your Thirst

I typically followed the practice of making sure all my water bottles, soda cans, and containers were liquid free. I’ve gone so far as to rummage in my recycling bin because I accidentally threw away a half empty soda. But did you know a few drops of liquid inside a bottle is actually a great thing? When your plastic bottles are going down the long conveyor belt there’s a lot of motion and wind. There are quite a few times where a bottle may go zooming across the room because it’s so light and has nothing weighing it down. When your bottles finally get underneath the crushers and balers all of the excess liquid will instantly be dispersed, proving no problem with their usability.

Go The Extra Mile

Sometimes recycling is your extra mile. Although it seems simple enough, all of those extra seconds you spend sorting and tossing add up. Recycling is crazy good for our environment. You’re taking those renewable resources and recycling them for another round of use. We’re constantly making more and more “things” from raw materials and eventually those items are going to become scarce, like trees.

Let’s say that recycling has become old hat for you. How can you go the extra mile? Well, check to see if you have recycling plants nearby that offer sorting bins. Make the extra effort to head that way and toss your sorted glass, metals, paper, and electronics. This will help expedite the recycling process and avoid any unknown mishaps on your part.

Give Back

Composting is about to make a huge surge becoming equivalent in popularity with recycling. Environmentalists are saying that the organic material rotting in landfills are producing the third biggest source of methane gas. If this keeps occurring at the same or an increasing rate, it will eventually play a part in global warming. Instead of raking and tossing your grass clippings and leaves place them in a compost. Eventually, this will turn into nutrient-rich soil that’s perfect for your garden activities. You can feel proud that you not only created your own fertilizer, but that you most likely saved money on store bought fertilizers, as well.

Recycling is a little more complex than just tossing your plastic bottles into a bin, but if you take two minutes out of your day to become informed you’ll be doing yourself and your children a great service by respecting the earth and treating it well.

Avoid The Breakout Blues Before, During, And After The Gym

The benefits of exercising are too numerous to mention. Improved mood, metabolism, and energy level are just a few. The pros far outweigh the cons, but there are still some lurking cons that may keep you from working out as frequently as you’d like.

Breakouts. Acne. Blemishes. They’re one in the same. Women are often prone to these dreaded bumps that can spatter across faces, necks, chests, and even backs. Typically when I go on one of my workout binges I have to suck it up and accept that the resulting pimples will inevitably occur. I just hold my breath and cross my fingers that it won’t be quite as bad as the last time. But the absurdity of leaving the health of my skin to chance finally took its toll on me.

Makeup Mayhem

Whether you’re working out during your lunch break, after your 9-5 job, or on the weekend, chances are you have some type of makeup on. Even if it’s just a dab of blush or light foundation, all of these chemicals can clog your pores. Even the mildest of facial lotions can contribute to the overwhelming number of blemishes that can pop up. Best advice? Wash your face before your workout. This may seem silly, but it’ll considerably reduce your chances of breaking out. Whether you wash your face with soap and water or use something a little more cutting edge like makeup-removing towelettes, you’ll notice a change instantly. Not only will you feel refreshed before your workout, but your face won’t have that sticky feeling. Also, you won’t have to worry about that running concealer either!

Hair Scare

Luscious locks are coveted by nearly all women. Avoiding the damaging effects of heating tools is a daily challenge. Unfortunately, those hydration masks and leave-in conditioners could actually be playing a part in your breakout blues. Sweat isn’t just localized to your face or chest, it actually starts from the scalp. So as your pores open and sweat is exuded, all of those moisturizing hair care products are slowly dripping down your forehead. A lot of times you may notice an outbreak of pimples along your hairline or closer to the center of your forehead; this is due to all of those moisture-rich products.

You shouldn’t have to sacrifice hair hydration just because you have an active lifestyle. That’s where the age-old salon rule comes into play: Place conditioner from your ear down. The ends of the hair are what typically become dried out, as natural oils have farther to travel the longer the hair strand. So next time you work out and your scalp begins to sweat it’ll just be natural sweat as opposed to sweat mixed with hair products.

Sunscreen Shade

Sunscreen is a health product from the gods. “When in doubt, just add sunscreen” is something we’ve all heard from dermatologists. Just because sunscreen may be wildly beneficial doesn’t mean it’s actually healthy for your skin, however. Some sunscreens are oily, while others have a matte finish. When choosing a sunscreen be sure to find one that’s oil free and dermatologist approved. This will be light on your face, moisturizing, and chemical free, so if you go for a beach run you’ll be protected from sun rays and those dreaded blackheads.

Cool Down

If you’re a gym-goer you know that it’s proper etiquette to wipe machines down after use. However, not all of us are quite so diligent. I’ve been guilty many a time of not wiping down the bike or dumbbells. It’s actually quite disgusting when you stop to think about it. How many times do you touch your face while working out, whether to wipe sweat from your brow or scratch an itch? Now just imagine everyone else doing that while they work out. No wonder our faces feel so gross after a gym session. A way to prevent this inevitable cycle of shared sweat is to not only wipe down your equipment after a workout but before too. That way you are ensuring clear skin safety for yourself.

Another helpful practice is bringing a fresh sweat towel. I typically wipe my face with the bottom of my shirt, but it’s usually drenched in sweat by that point, creating a cyclical problem of sweat and dirt. Toting around a small towel is a great way to keep your skin fresh. But make sure it’s a clean towel. It may be tempting to use the same one several days in a row, but that would defeat the purpose of using a clean towel.

Shower Power

Showering is the ultimate bacteria and dirt remover. The quicker you can hop in the shower and soap down the better off your skin will be. Also, the steam from the shower keeps your pores open, so the soap will be able to effectively flush out the areas that typically become clogged.

Sometimes jumping in the shower immediately after a workout isn’t an option, though. What better way to get fresh than turning to cleansing wipes again? Wiping down your face and other acne-prone areas with baby wipes or another cleanser is a good substitute. It’s not as beneficial as the real deal, but it still makes a huge difference.

Whether you decide to implement one or all of these tips you can rest assured that you’re doing the best you can for your skin. Personally, I’d rather have a few blemishes and a toned body than smooth skin with no definition.

Pollination, Almond Cookies, Colony Collapse, and How These All Relate

National Honey Bee Day is in August. Honey bees; an animal I usually disregard but take advantage of on a daily basis.

As a child, one of my favorite cereals was Honey Nut Cheerios. That sweet tang was just enough to get me to eat breakfast. As I’ve grown older, I’ve relied heavily upon local honey to help relieve my seasonal allergies. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve taken this sweetener for granted. I mean, why not slather copious amounts of this sweet nectar onto my dry toast? Then, I began hearing and reading horror stories of how honey bees are on the brink of extinction and how our food supply will quickly dwindle if this is the case.

I recently had the privilege to chat with Edward Spevak, the Curator of Invertebrates at the Saint Louis Zoo, regarding honey bee health, our ecosystem, and how pollination is essential to the food we consume. Spevak has not only devoted his time to the zoological park of Saint Louis, but he is also the Director of the Center for Native Pollinator Conservation and Bumble Bee Programme Officer for the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission Bumblebee Specialist Group. Needless to say, he was the exact person I wanted to speak with about the latest “bee scare.”

In 2006, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) was identified. We still do not know the exact cause because, at the end of the day, there are a plethora of reasons why the collapse has been happening: pesticide use, loss of flower resources with habitat loss, and diseases are just some of the situations occurring. There’s a lot going on at once (United States Department of Agriculture).

Many issues stem from the bee collapse. One of the bigger problems manifesting itself is that commercial beekeepers are having a harder time providing adequate pollination services. Most crops rely on bees, but a lot of times there are not enough native bees to get the job done. So, beekeepers place honeybees in boxes and transport them wherever pollination is needed. When the number of hives a beekeeper maintain collapses then the number of crops being pollinated is severely reduced, which greatly reduces the crops we have for our consumption.

The process of bee pollination is largely instrumental in giving us nutrition. The plants that supply us with vitamins, minerals, lipids…they’re all dependent on bees. Many people don’t understand just how reliant we are on bees. To put it in perspective, 75% of our crops require pollinators. One out of every three bites we take relies on bees. We typically think that bees are pollinating flowers, but flowers are the crux to most crops that we eat: rice, oats, barley, and other grains.

We’ve made it a priority to expand our agriculture, but we’re not keeping a suitable habitat for pollinators. It’s impossible for us to survive on wind-based foods (essentially plants that receive their pollination via wind), since they will not provide us with the proper nutrition that is crucial for a balanced diet.

In addition to expanding our crop production, we’ve created a huge problem – habitat loss.

Habitat loss is a major issue that most wildlife is experiencing, but it’s not just occurring in and around our corn fields, it’s happening in our own backyards.

The current trend in suburbia is the desire for manicured lawns; the greener the better. But lawns are a biological desert. There are no wildflowers for pollination or trees to support other insects. Although the majority of people find lawns to be aesthetically pleasing, it is not sustainable for a healthy environment. The same goes for the roadsides. Commuters want roadsides to be mowed due to an aesthetic aspect, but milkweed and other wildflowers that are crucial for pollinators are being eliminated. States, such as Iowa, are developing roadsides specifically for pollinators. In fact, a presidential memorandum was released in 2015 that directs all federal departments to develop a pollinator plan since the decrease in bees can quickly affect the agriculture of our country.

It’s not just government policies that are beginning to make changes to secure the safety of the honey bees. The Saint Louis Zoo is a prime example of an organization that is not only protecting but is also raising awareness for the plight of these magnificent creatures. Their Monsanto Insectarium features honeybees and lets visitors take a peek inside a working beehive to show how these insects help pollinate our crops. Not only do they have a stunning information center but they have a meadow outside their butterfly house where a variety of bees is encouraged to pollinate in safety. Information plaques litter the Missouri Meadow so viewers can understand that there is more than one type of bee (STL Zoo).

In addition to the habitat loss, job security has been on a slow decline. Job security is firmly rooted in the access and livability of pollinators. Take, for example, almond trees. Almond trees only require pollination during the bloom period, and this is a very short time-span. Native bees are more than capable of pollinating almond trees, but there is nothing else in these regions to sustain the native bees year-round. Therefore, native bees have left these areas of California that play host to almond trees. And the same goes for blueberry plants. They have a fairly decent bloom time, but bees don’t have anywhere to be active before and after the bloom period. If you’re wanting to keep native bees around these plants, or any other seasonal plant, you’re going to need to cultivate a year long flowering garden (Beyond Toxics).

However, most agricultural producers don’t have the time or resources to create flowering gardens large enough to sustain the amount of bees that they need to pollinate their entire crop. Since native bees aren’t available for pollination, bee colonies are rented. Originally, honey bee rentals were about $30-35 per hive, but now hives are costing upwards of $200 because of the demand. Each year bees are driven in to pollinate seasonal plants so that farmers can yield a profitable crop. After pollination has occurred these bees are then shipped out to the next location. To put the gravity of the situation into perspective, about 1.7 million colonies of honey bees are placed in California almond orchards each year. That’s a frightfully large cost for pollination (Almonds).

Another economic issue that farmers are running into is that 50%, 60%, all the way to 80% of beehives have been lost by individual commercial beekeepers. You can split hives to make up for the loss, but you have to build them up. Unfortunately, this is a costly endeavor because of the efforts put in by the beekeepers and the increase in the total amount of crops that are requiring pollination services.

Aside from an economic perspective, the U.S. is finding a greater increase in obesity levels as well as people who are undernourished. Essentially, the lack of pollinators is creating a nutritional obstacle. Products that are dependent upon pollinators are going to provide long-term health benefits since we won’t have to rely so heavily on supplementary care. And if we take heed to the USDA food pyramid and follow it then it would be much healthier to rely upon crops that need pollination.

The implications from the loss of bees start off as economic and health-related. However, if we look beyond our U.S. borders, bees can create a national security issue as well. Loss of pollinators means that there may be food scarcity, which in turn can create civil unrest, propelling people to migrate to different countries. The U.S. is known for aiding countries in times of crisi
s, and if people are rioting over the lack of food or flooding to other borders then it is somewhat inevitable that military deployment may occur.

So far we’ve been looking at the loss of bees as a concern to a human’s well-being, but bees are crucial to other animals’ existence as well. Twenty-five percent of bird species are dependent upon fruits and nuts that require pollination as well as bears, mice, a

nd other wildlife. Additionally, many trees and other plants that create wildlife habitat, and provide other environment services require pollination as well. If this doesn’t sound the alarm for the need to protect a sustainable environment then I don’t know what will.

However, the takeaway from this discussion should not be that honey bees are the best or preferred pollinators. For instance, let’s take bumble bees. They are the only species, in the entire world, that can pollinate tomato plants. Then there are squash bees, alkali bees, and alfalfa bees, just to name a few. The native species that cover the globe is dizzying and puts the loss of one bee into perspective.

Although honeybees aren’t about to go extinct, native bees are becoming endangered through the loss of their habitat.

Bees are one of the greatest creatures you can become familiar with. As long as we have a demand for fruits and vegetables, which we will, then the importance of bees will be even more visible to the naked eye. And to put those of you at ease who are scared of getting stung, Spevak makes a great point: when a bee is on a flower all they’re thinking about is food. The only time we should be concerned about getting stung is if we’re interfering with a colony. If the bees believe that their queen is in danger then they will attack. Bees are generally a solitary animal so chances are you’ll be fine.

Finding information about bees is easier than you’d imagine. The Saint Louis Zoo isn’t the only zoo in that has a fantastic program. Go to your local zoo or nursery and just strike up a casual conversation. In the span of five minutes, you’ll learn invaluable tools on how to respect our planet and help it thrive. So next time you’re hesitant to plant flowers because you’re worried of bees now you can remember they’re not there to harm but to help.

Don't Mind Me, I'm Just Hangry

Have you ever lost your cool when you were hungry? You turned from angel to devil in the blink of an eye. You couldn’t imagine ever getting out of such a terrible mood, but then you took a bite of a sandwich, or maybe you munched on an apple or a bag of pretzels. Whatever it was, you magically felt better, like a weight had been lifted off you and you could finally smile and breathe again. Your friend says jokingly, “God, Jen, why’d you have to get so hangry?”

Hangry? Yes, hangry. Hangry is the new term blending both hungry and angry into a cute little package. It seems funny to joke about being hangry, and it also feels vaguely like an excuse. I mean, you can control snapping at your partner when you’re a little hungry, right? But alas, the hangry phenomenon is actually scientifically proven. Although scientists probably wouldn’t use the term hangry, it does get the point across.

What Makes You Hangry?

The biggest factor to the “hangers” is your blood glucose levels. Medical researcher Amanda Salis has written a hefty article breaking down all the effects. “The carbohydrates, proteins and fats in everything you eat are digested into simple sugars (such as glucose), amino acids, and free fatty acids. These nutrients pass into your bloodstream from where they are distributed to your organs and tissues and used for energy.” So basically, everything you eat performs some function in the body (Salis).

Over time, all of the energy that you’ve digested is used. Whether you are riding your bike or journaling, little by little all of those nutrients are going to be sucked away. Glucose is your primary energy source, so it’s only logical that when there is an absence of glucose your body will go into life-or-death mode. Six hours is all it takes for your glucose levels to become depleted, and that’s when you begin to feel that angry and annoyed sensation (Bushak).

In addition to being your main source for energy, glucose is crucial for the operation of your brain. You’ll notice that you become muddled, slower at work, drop things, and are just not yourself. Some people have even noticed a sensation where their words are slightly slurred. Basically, simple things become that much harder. This is why we have a tendency to snap at friends and family–people we are close to–because being pleasant requires effort and our energy and resources have been depleted.

If you thought having a low energy supply was bad, how about adding this onto your current hangry state? When glucose levels are dwindling, four hormones are released, one of them being adrenaline. Scientists believe that adrenaline is released as a survival measure. If all organisms passively let others eat before them then there would be many extinct creatures. So when you’re feeling a little grumbly about missing your afternoon snack, know that there’s a very logical cause: Your body is worried about where its next food will come from. You’re in survival mode, and your friends don’t stand a chance.

So Is It All Glucose’s Fault?

All we’ve been hearing is glucose, glucose, glucose. Is there anything else that’s affected by your lack of nutrients? Well yes, as a matter of fact. Many people who suffer from depression and other ailments are believed to have low serotonin levels, thus doctors will prescribe medications that boost this chemical. But did you know that serotonin is released when we eat? So, when we don’t eat, guess what happens? Yep, we get angry. Many people assume that most people eat for pleasure, which is true to some extent.

Think back. When was the last time you were truly hungry? You hadn’t eaten for hours and you would’ve given anything for a little scrap of food. You see people around you eating and what are you feeling? Anxiety, frustration, irritation, and quite frankly, you’ve become emotional. The longer you deny your body food, the hangrier you’ll get. When you eat, the feeling of pleasure rushes through you, and some mistake this for happiness. In reality, serotonin is being released, which automatically boosts your mood. Clearly, the body’s processes are interconnected. We may not think that our brain is linked to our digestive tract, but it is (Currie).

How To Fight The Hangers

Snacks. The only way to prevent feeling hangry is to keep yourself properly nourished. Having small intermittent snacks throughout the day will keep your hunger at bay. There have been countless articles discussing the benefits of multiple small meals a day: boosting metabolism, producing energy, and staving off fatigue are just a few of the advantages.

So next time you feel your mood plummeting, grab some food. Not only will you save yourself frustration, but you’ll probably save some relationships as well!
