How To Get A Job You Feel Unqualified For

Making a leap in your career can be daunting, especially if you feel underqualified for the job. But with the right mindset and approach, you can make your application stand out, impress people in your interview, and land the job you’re dreaming of.
So if you spot an open position and you’re telling yourself, “I am not qualified for this job,” hold on. We’ve got insider deets on how to ace the recruitment and hiring process.

Should you apply if you feel unqualified?

While it may not be fruitful to apply for the CEO position after your first year on the job, there is some wiggle room in terms of the years of experience and required skills mentioned in most job postings.
Rebecca Ebner, a talent acquisition business partner and operations integration lead, and her team have discovered that “Women, in general, will only apply for a job if they meet 90 percent of the criteria—sometimes even 100 percent—whereas men will apply if they only meet about 75 percent of the job requirements.”
That’s a huge difference, isn’t it? And if women continue to feel like they shouldn’t apply unless they meet every requirement, we’re at a serious disadvantage in the workplace.
“Because women are more inclined to make sure they’re 100 percent qualified before applying, they are more apt to find themselves in a non-challenging position,” shares Ebner. It’s hard, then, to expect growth in a role like that. Oftentimes, though, women stay in a job because they look at the next level and feel like they don’t meet that next set of criteria.
So, let’s break this harmful cycle!  

Catch Their Eye: Tips for When You’re Unqualified

Align your resume with the job qualifications.

The first thing Ebner suggests is pulling out your resume along with the job description for the new position. Compare the job posting qualifications, years of experience necessary, and required skills to what’s on your resume. Where are the gaps? And what are the aspects you need to clarify on your resume?
“If possible, sit down with a trusted friend, a previous manager, or a mentor,” suggests Ebner. You’ll gain an outside perspective and receive guidance on how to modify your resume.

Don’t forget to adjust your older work history, either, even if the job was several years ago. “A lot of people don’t go back and update all of their experience,” says Ebner. For example, if you were a cashier at McDonald’s, you might list tasks such as “dealt with customers” or “exchanged money.” Ebner recommends editing the tone of these descriptions to include things like, “provided high level of customer service” or “processed orders and managed cash register during high volume.”
By making small modifications that align your past experiences with the new job, you’re showing that your background does indeed match with what your prospective employer is looking for.

Talk about all of your years of experience.

“Perhaps you haven’t done the specific tasks listed on the job description, but chances are you have experience related to some of the skills they’ve included: leadership, critical thinking, project management,” says Faith Shovein, talent acquisition manager at Domino’s Pizza Headquarters. “If you’re able to reference examples of these qualities in your work and confidently communicate their relevance, chances are the employer will make the connection.”
And sometimes it’s not just your previous jobs that relate to a position but your extracurriculars too. Whether you led a project as a volunteer or guest lectured at a university, add all of your related experience and skills to your resume. Consider highlighting activities such as volunteering for charity, taking training courses, being a member of an organization, or participating as an elected individual on a local council or parent–teacher association, for example.
By highlighting your related experiences, both career-based and otherwise, you’ll have a more well-rounded application that’s likely to catch the eyes of a recruiter or hiring manager.

Sealing the Deal: Tips for Your Interview

You’ve landed an interview. Congratulations!
Whether it’s a phone interview or you’re meeting in person, specific strategies will help you stand out.
Remember, though, that honesty is always the best policy. “Your interviewer has your resume, so they know your background. It’s okay to say that you’ve never done something before,” says Karen DeVries, a practice manager at Mercy Health who hires for clinical jobs, front end staff, team leaders, and physicians.
So how can you be honest and still boost your interview performance?

Research the job and company ahead of time.

While it may seem like common sense, a large portion of candidates don’t do ample research about the company or position ahead of time. Doing thorough research puts you at a serious advantage.
“If you don’t have experience with something listed on the job description, make sure you’ve gained a reasonable understanding so you’re not caught entirely off guard when it’s mentioned in an interview,” shares Shovein. “The more you know about the company, the better you can understand the job and how your skill sets will contribute to the success of the role.”

“You should be able to ask questions about the role itself, even if you’re not experienced in it,” says DeVries. “Come to the interview prepared with a brief statement about why you’re interested in the position and how you’re hoping to grow or learn, along with a few narrowed questions about the role or department.”
That’s right: An interview is a two-way street.
“People go into interviews thinking they have to ace it to get the job, but sometimes a job truly isn’t the best fit. Be sure to ask questions about the culture, business, and growth opportunities,” suggests Ebner. These aspects make a big difference when deciding if the job is right for you, too.

Prepare, prepare, prepare.

“After 10 years in recruiting, I’m still shocked when I stump candidates with questions like ‘What interested you in this job?’ or ‘Tell me about your most recent accomplishment,’” shares Shovein.
Her tip for having solid answers ready? Study yourself!
“Before any interview, set aside time to review your key professional experiences so that they’re fresh in your mind when you’re asked for specific examples in an interview. This should alleviate the time spent sulking after your interview when that perfect answer finally came to you.”

Allow yourself time to answer.

Arriving at your interview prepared is essential, but you won’t have perfect responses for everything. “If you come across a question and you’re unsure how to answer, you can say, ‘Let me think about that for a moment,’” says DeVries. “By requesting more time, it shows you give good thought to your answers and you’re not just giving scripted responses.”

Redirect the answer if necessary.

If you get to the interview and are asked about something you don’t have experience with, modify your answer rather than simply saying you’ve never done it before. “Try saying something like, ‘That’s not something I’m well-versed in, but I did have this experience that relates,’ or ‘I’ve never done that, but here’s what I’m looking to do in future experiences,’” suggests DeVries.
By changing the angle of your answer, you’re providing the interviewer with honest information and showing you can think critically and connect your other experiences.

Follow the STAR method for behavioral-based interview questions.

Almost all companies and HR departments include behavioral-based interviewing in their recruitment process. Behavioral-based questions prompt you to describe previous experiences—revealing how you handled situations and which skills you utilized.

“With behavioral-based questions, always follow the STAR method,” says Ebner. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Find behavioral-based question samples by searching online (or check out The Balance Careers’ list here), then practice describing the situation, the tasks you accomplished, the actions you took, and the final results. By incorporating these four components, you’ll give your interviewer a well-rounded response.
Remember that interviewers want to hear examples. “If you say you’re organized, be ready to describe how you’re organized,” says DeVries. Anyone can say they’re a team player or dedicated. But if you can show how you put those qualities into practice, hiring managers will understand the incredible value you offer.

Demonstrate your adaptability and willingness to learn.

Ebner shares that managers may choose lower-qualified candidates if they demonstrate that they’re trainable and adaptable. “If candidates show a positive demeanor in the interview and provide examples of being flexible to change, a hiring manager will have an incentive to hire that person.”
So, it’s not just about years of experience after all. It’s about who you are as a person, too.

And…don’t forget the interview basics for getting a job.

Making a great first impression is key, and that can start with what you wear to your interview: “Come to the interview in professional attire. Choose simplistic colors instead of bright ones. Let the interviewer ask the complete question before cutting them off,” reminds DeVries.
It’s normal (and even healthy) to be a bit nervous for an interview, but try to remain calm, and focus on answering the specific question asked.  
Ebner suggests keeping your answers to two to four minutes long so the interview feels more conversational. By sticking to answering the question, the interviewer will have time for follow-up questions and discussion.

What Not to Do When You Feel Unqualified in a Job Interview

“First of all, don’t show that you feel unqualified,” says Ebner. She recalls a time when a candidate interviewed and said to the manager, “I know I’m unqualified, so this interview is just for good practice. Thank you for having me.” The manager was immediately turned off from hiring them due to their lack of confidence.
“It’s natural to experience impostor syndrome when you feel unqualified for a job,” says Ebner. She recommends bringing confidence to the interview and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. That’s part of leaping to that next level.

When to Call It Quits

“Sometimes the hiring process is slow,” admits Ebner. Even if a company has a rockstar candidate, they might be waiting on funding or someone could be on vacation. “Just because you haven’t heard back on an application or interview isn’t indicative that you’re unqualified or not the right fit.”
But if you’ve put forth continual effort in applying for similar roles and you’re not getting anywhere, take a step back and assess the situation, says Ebner. “Ask yourself questions like, ‘Do I have real leadership skills? Have I put myself in positions to direct others in their work?’ Identify gaps between your current experience and the role you want. Consider joining organizations or project teams or asking for new assignments to pursue opportunities to build specific skills.
“If you can’t seem to move up immediately in your own organization, consider moving to another company,” says Ebner. You can always come back once you have new skills and experiences.
Set your eyes on that next role and keep chipping away at achieving your dreams. It will happen.

10 Best Ab Exercises To Get Results

A strong core provides fundamental support to your back, abdomen, and entire body.
But doing any ol’ ab exercise won’t get you the results you’re looking for. In fact, they could even cause injury. “With sit-ups, for instance, you’re activating the muscles on the outside—not the deep transverse abdominis. You can hurt your spine or overuse your hip flexors,” explains Kara Griffith, exercise physiologist at Colorado Canyons Hospital & Medical Center.
So what are the best ab exercises?
To get the real skinny, we asked a physical therapist, certified personal trainer, and exercise physiologist about the ab exercises that will help you achieve a stronger, more toned core.
The best part? You can do all of these exercises at home. No need to pay for a gym membership or carve out time to attend a pilates class.

But first, why is an ab workout routine so important?

“The core is the foundation of the body,” says Griffith. “Just like a house, if the foundation is weak, it will crumble. It’s the same with the body.”
Griffith says that when we talk about core, we don’t just mean the abdominal muscles. “The core muscles are meant to stabilize your spine. The core includes abdominal, diaphragm, and pelvic floor musculature,” explains Nina Strang, physical therapist and certified strengthening and conditioning specialist at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor.
Griffith shares that the benefits of strengthening your core are numerous and include injury prevention, decreased back pain, less fatigue, less pain in other parts of the body, more endurance, and increased strength. “When your core is strong, you have better balance and you’re able to do activities in your daily life using less energy because you have a strong core supporting all of that movement.”  
That’s right: ab exercises aren’t just about getting a flatter stomach or achieving a 6-pack. And if we’re honest, focusing on just aesthetic results can be misleading. “We’re all different. Some people are tall, some are short, some have big hips. Everyone carries their weight differently,” shares Ann Scheufler, registered dietitian nutritionist who owns and runs Peas and Hoppiness.

So rather than focusing on a certain “look,” Scheufler encourages women to enjoy their personal fitness journeyknowing that with consistent exercise and proper nutrition, you’ll see results in your weight, inches, and level of toning.

Proper form and variety are essential.

Just like any exercise, ab workouts need to be done properly to get real results. “Our bodies are good at finding the path of least resistance, which isn’t always the best way,” explains Strang. If we’re not mindful of our form, we put ourselves at risk of injury … and of missing out on the intended rewards.
“Variety is your best friend with any workout,” says Griffith. “You don’t want to do the same workouts every time because of muscle memory: The body gets too used to doing the same exercises.” To keep improving and strengthening (and to avoid muscle overuse), it’s a good practice to vary your ab workouts.

Best Ab Exercises

1. Pilates 100

Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet on the floor. Imprint your pelvis by drawing your belly button up and in to press your lower back against the floor. Lift your head and neck off of the ground in a lifted crunch position, maintaining a neutral neck line by looking at your knees.  Extend your arms along your sides and reach away from you. Breathe slowly, using five counts on the inhale and five counts on the exhale, pulsing the arms with each count.
“Your arms should be strong and not floppy. Engage your shoulders,” says Griffith. “Hold your legs in the same position, maintaining control of the lower back and pelvis.”
Suggested reps: Do as many as you can with good form, or up to 100 counts (per the exercise name) for one set.
Advance the movement:

  • Beginners: Keep your feet on the ground.
  • Intermediate: Lift your legs up to a table top position with your knees and hips at a 90 degree angle.
  • Advanced: Extend your legs upward at an angle.

“Do the version that’s appropriate for your level. The better your form, the better your results,” says Griffith.

2. Vacuums

Face a wall in standing position with both hands on the wall in front of you. “You shouldn’t be leaning or resting on the wall, but stabilizing your body there,” says Megan Williams, certified personal trainer, diet specialist, and founder of Megan Williams Training.
Then, squeeze your core, sucking in and straightening your spine, as if you’re putting on a pair of tight pants. Hold this upright, tucked ab position for 30 seconds. “You should feel your entire core, transverse abdominis, and obliques engaging as you hold this elongated spinal position,” says Williams.
Suggested reps: Four to five reps.
Advance the movement: Hold for 60 seconds instead of 30.

3. The Bridge

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Extend your arms to your sides or cross them over your chest. Your feet should be hip-width apart with your toes facing away from you.
Lift your hips toward the ceiling while contracting your abdominal muscles. “Make sure you’re lifting with your hips. Your abdominals should stabilize your spine to prevent lifting with your back,” explains Strang. Hold your hips up for a count of five while stabilizing your ab muscles. Bring your hips slowly back down.
Suggested reps: 15 to 20 reps, three or four sets.
Advance the movement: Extend one leg upward in line with your hips. Remember to keep your lower back and pelvis tilted toward the ground to keep your form.

4. Marching

The marching exercise is ideal for an ab workout at home. Lie on your back with your neck and shoulders resting comfortably on the floor. Tighten your abs and tilt your pelvis so your lower back touches the floor. Both legs should be bent and resting on the floor. Lift up one leg at a time, focus on keeping your back still and abdominals tight. “Go slow and focus on controlled motion. If you can’t control the motion, limit your leg movement. Remember to keep the focus on engaging your transverse abdominis,” says Strang.
Suggested reps: 20 reps, three sets.
Advance the movement: Bend both legs in a table top position (90 degree angle from your hips). Slowly lower one leg down at a time and tap your heel to the floor.

5. Backward Crunch

Start in a seated position with your feet on the floor and a straight, neutral spine. Lean backward slowly, counting to 20. Controlled movement is key, says Williams.
Once you feel like you could fall backward, plant your hands on the floor and slowly push yourself back up to starting position. “Instead of a normal crunch, you’re only doing the leaning back portion, which elongates the spine and engages the core muscles. It also burns!” says Williams.
Suggested reps: Work your way up to 10 reps, but start with three to five.
Advance the movement: Lift your feet off of the floor so your knees are closer to your chest.

6. Bird Dogs

Begin in a table top position with your knees on the ground and your hands planted firmly shoulder-width apart. With a flat back, engage your abs by tucking in and keeping your spine straight. Extend one leg straight backward (in line with your spine) while simultaneously extending the opposite arm out straight. Bring them back in to the starting position. Alternate by extending the opposite leg and opposite arm.
Suggested reps: 20 to 30 reps, three sets.
Advance the movement: Hold your arm and leg in the extended position for five seconds before bringing them back to the starting position.

7. Planks

Lie on the floor with your stomach facing down. Touch your toes to the floor and lift your body using your glutes, core muscles, and arms. Support your body weight on your elbows or hands. For beginners, keep your knees on the ground.
“Your elbows or hands should be right under the shoulders, and your legs should be straight out behind you,” says Griffith. Keep your hips in alignment, creating a straight line from the ankles to the knees to the hips to the shoulders. If your hips are too high, you won’t be engaging your core. If they’re too low, it puts stress on your lower back, explains Griffith. Remember that you’re pulling in on your abs and not pushing out.
Suggested reps: Hold for up to one minute (or as long as you can), three times. If you need to take a break before one minute, do it.
Advance the movement: Engage your obliques with side planks by rotating your body sideways, keeping one foot on the ground and stacking the other on top of it. Rest on your elbow or straighten your arm, planting your palm firmly on the ground. Elevate your hips to remain in line with your body.

8. Banded Obliques

Loop a resistance band with handles around something sturdy that won’t move. Take a few steps away from the object that the band is attached to. Lift both arms above the head while holding the band by the handle. Lock the shoulders so they don’t move. Slowly side bend away from the attachment, then come back to center, but don’t let the band pull you past center. “It’s all about smooth control,” says Griffith. Adjust the resistance of your band as needed by moving closer or further away. Alternate sides to get both sets of obliques.
Suggested reps: Perform one set to fatigue with 10 to 20 reps per side. Use a lighter or heavier resistance band as needed.
Advance the movement: Increase to 15 reps, but keep your form intact.

9. Rotating Ab Plank

Begin in a plank position (see #7). Bend your knees slightly so your feet are closer to your shoulders than normal. Start in the middle position, and pull in the stomach as you rotate slowly to one side without dropping the knees. Extend your top arm toward the sky. Hold for 20 seconds. Rotate back to the middle slowly, hold for 20 seconds, then rotate to the opposite side for a 20 count. “You should be squeezing your bottom abs and working your obliques as you rotate,” says Williams.
Suggested reps: Two reps, three sets.
Advance the movement: Hold for 40 seconds on each side and in the center.

10. Knee Tucks

Time to pull out your exercise ball! Start in a plank position with your hands planted firmly on the floor, shoulder-distance apart. Your toes should be secure to the ball for stability. Tuck your knees to your chest, rolling in the ball toward your head. Slowly extend your legs back out.
Suggested reps: 10 to 15 reps. Two to three sets.
Advance the movement: Hold for a five-second count when your legs are in the extended position.

Incorporate ab exercises into your daily routine.

“Even when you’re sitting at your desk, your abs can be engaged to support healthy posture. Place both feet on the ground, press your feet lightly as if you’re standing, and straighten your spine,” instructs Griffith. You can even engage your core while you wash dishes or stand in line at the grocery store.
Wondering how many times per week to do ab workouts specifically?
“Three days a week is recommended for ab workouts,” says Griffith. “You don’t need to do a specific ab workout every day, and you shouldn’t do ab-specific exercises two days in a row. Just like the rest of the body, those muscles need recovery days.”

And don’t forget a crucial ingredient: your nutrition.

“There’s an old adage that says ‘Abs are made in the kitchen,’” says Williams. And others agree.
For healthy, toned abs, it’s important to reduce the fat that’s around them. Scheufler explains: “If someone wants to lose weight, especially around the middle, they need to reduce their caloric intake. You want to specifically avoid blood sugar spikes. When the liver doesn’t have enough room to store the excess sugar that isn’t immediately burned (and it maxes out quickly), that excess sugar turns into fat.” Reducing your intake of simple sugars and carbs, like soda, helps reduce your belly fat and your fat overall.
“Fruits and veggies are also important when it comes to weight loss because they are full of fiber and water,” says Scheufler. She encourages everyone to get the recommended daily protein amount of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a person who weighs 150 pounds, that means around 54 grams per day. “You can get protein from meat, dairy, beans, lentils, nuts, tofu, and any soy protein,” Scheufler says.
To see the most significant body changes, Griffith suggests the fitness trifecta: healthy eating, balanced strength training with a focus on the core, and cardio that’s not seated.

Experts Explain How To Save Money Realistically

Money Saving Tip #1: Shift your money mindset.

Our own beliefs about money and the beliefs of those around us impact our actions regarding money. “You have to be intentional with what you allow into your environment: what information you’re consuming and what you’re exposing yourself to when it comes to money,” says Amanda Abella, founder and CEO of Make Money Your Honey.
What influenced you as a kid and throughout your lifetime makes a difference. Do you believe you can save a lot of money? Or do you believe that you’ll always be scraping by?
Before you can make a money-saving transformation, you have to truly believe it’s possible to accumulate wealth. “If there’s a subconscious belief that you can’t do it, you’ll sabotage yourself,” explains Abella. “People aren’t accustomed to saying what they want. But you have to allow yourself to dream in order to make your savings goals a reality.”
That’s why Abella encourages people to seek out information on wealth consciousness and money mindset. From reading books like Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill to listening to financial podcasts like Jamila Souffrant’s Journey to Launch, you can mentally condition yourself to believe wealth and financial stability are possible for you.

Souffrant, a certified financial education instructor, blogger, podcast host, and money coach, says that shifting your mindset to “I’m going to save first, then spend what’s left” (instead of the other way around) is foundational and essential.

Money Saving Tip #2: Yes, you gotta have a budget.

If you don’t know what you’re spending compared to what you’re making, it’s difficult to make any financial progress. “A budget or spending plan is helpful because it gives you an inventory of your habits: what you spend on and where the leaks in your budget are,” explains Souffrant.  
The amount you spend per month on lattes or grocery shopping remains a mystery if you don’t track it. Luckily, you can make a budget retroactively. On a piece of paper, in a spreadsheet, or with an app, record your financial activity for the last two or three months, recommends Souffrant. Look at your credit card statements, checking accounts, and bank accounts to determine what you spend in each category. After you have this baseline, continue to track what you’re spending and where the money is going. Review each month’s budget to see where you can make changes.
“Look for repetitive patterns,” says Tanya Ince, PhD, a money coach and business consultant. “Maybe you have a monthly membership that could be canceled or downgraded.”
Ince teases: “I know coffee is important, but even $2 a day equals more than $700 a year.”

Money Saving Tip #3: Design crystal-clear goals.

“I knew that in order to start saving, I had to get clear on my ‘why,’” explains Abella. “I wanted to live by the water and run my own business. I knew it was going to require money.”
By taking time to determine her goals and how she wanted to live, she was able to calculate how much money she needed. From there, she reverse engineered her budget—knowing exactly how much she had to save.
So how can you get clear on what you want? “Identify your goal and make it specific, measurable, and timed,” encourages Ince. If your goal is to vacation to the Greek islands within the next year, estimate the total cost. “With a clear goal like this, you understand how much to save and how long you have to save that money.”
Ince suggests creating a mental or, better yet, a physical picture of your goal. Print a photo of the car you want or your dream vacation destination and put it on your fridge or computer monitor. That constant visual reminder will help keep you on track.
But quality is far better than quantity when it comes to financial goals. “If we have too many competing goals and desires, we become overwhelmed and make poor financial decisions,” explains Ince.
That’s why it’s important to pick one or two goals that are top priority. Is it a trip to Vegas or a down payment on a house? If it’s important to save for a house, you may have to forgo the trip (but don’t worry—you could always staycation as a cheaper alternative). “Some sacrifices will need to be made,” says Souffrant. “There might be times when you’ll need to cut back on things that don’t matter as much.”

Money Saving Tip #4: Automate, automate, automate.

Have you ever thought to yourself “I’ll put money in an account later” but it never happens?
Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.
“Your savings should be automatic. Ideally, they should be deducted before you see your paycheck and taxes,” says Souffrant. Many employers offer options to automatically deposit money into different accounts, including savings accounts and retirement accounts.
If your employer doesn’t offer multiple direct deposits, use an app to automate your savings. “It’s easy to start saving using robo-advisors and automatic savings apps, like Acorns or Stash,” explains Ince. “You can choose the right portfolio for you and the amount to save per month. Or choose an option to invest your leftover change from each transaction.”
When your savings are automatic, you don’t have to think about it. Your saving plan is on autopilot. It’s one less decision to make.

Money Saving Tip #5: Start small—and be consistent.

“Research shows that people increase their amount of savings over time. The hardest thing is to start. So, start small and save regularly,” encourages Ince.
Souffrant admits that the delayed gratification of saving is tough. “Many people say, ‘I work hard. I deserve this. Life is short, and I can’t take my money with me.’” But it’s not about whether you deserve something. It’s about remembering that the time is going to pass anyway. If you save small amounts, you can still enjoy life. “Saving money shouldn’t be a complete deprivation; it’s about being smart about the future,” Souffrant says.
A long-term goal like buying a house or traveling internationally can seem far away. But if you save consistently over time, you will get there. Souffrant explains: “It’s kind of like going to the gym once. You won’t see a flat tummy right away.” But if you save for even five weeks, you’ll see the progress. “Stick with it, and your future self will thank you.”
“Make a commitment to increase your savings by 1 percent each year,” Ince suggests. “Time works in your favor, and it really makes sense to start early.”

Money Saving Tip #6: Identify the best places for your money.

Dropping your money into a savings account isn’t always the most lucrative option.
Where you put your money depends on what you need it for, explains Souffrant. “Everyone needs an emergency fund, which should be easily accessible funds in a savings account.” Experts recommend three to six months of living expenses be stowed away in case of a job loss or unexpected bills. Rather than putting those charges on credit cards with high interest rates, you’re accessing your own cash.
And emergency funds aren’t just to prepare for negative circumstances. “That extra money also allows you to take advantage of an unexpected opportunity, like friends taking a trip or a training class that will improve your chances in the job market,” says Abella.
In addition to easily accessed cash, you’ll want to consider funds for long-term gain, like a retirement or investment fund. “If you’re saving for something that’s not a short-term goal, consider a mutual fund, IRA, or retirement account,” explains Ince. You’ll reap more reward, like an 8 percent compounding return on an investment, over the 1 to 3 percent interest you might see in a savings account.

“Remember: Investing in stocks, mutual funds, or index funds [is] riskier but offers a much higher return over time than a savings account. So don’t invest money you need in the near term,” says Souffrant.
Abella recommends opening different saving accounts with labeled names that represent your goals: a house down payment, a trip to Thailand. “Every time you log in, you see the specific goal and what you’re working toward.”

Money Saving Tip #7: Maximize your retirement matching.

“Make contributions to your retirement plan—at least enough to maximize how much is matched by your employer,” encourages Ince. At that point, it’s basically free money.
If you have access to a 401(k) or 403(b) through your place of employment, you’ll have different options for what you can choose to invest in, says Souffrant. “Call your human resources department or plan provider to understand where your money is going.” Compare fees and average return rates to maximize growth in your retirement accounts.

Money Saving Tip #8: Consider additional income streams.

Saving more money isn’t just about limiting your spending. “We either need to increase our income or cut down on spending or both,” Ince remarks.
To add income, ask for a raise, volunteer for more hours, or take on a part-time job or side hustle. “For those without a large gap between spending and income, there isn’t much money to save. In these cases, focusing on increasing income is the best strategy.”
Abella agrees, saying that it’s important to have your money coming from different sources. Whether it’s freelancing on the side, becoming a social media influencer, waiting tables, or selling items you no longer need, you’ll be in a position for setting aside more money. “If you pick up a side gig, make sure to save that money and live off of your normal income,” reminds Abella.

Money Saving Tip #9: Seek accountability.

As with changing any habit, follow-through is where many people get stuck. Finding someone or a group to hold you accountable can make all the difference. “When we state our goals verbally, we tend to stick to them more than if we don’t,” says Ince.
“Get a close friend on board with you. Make it fun and update each other every week,” says Souffrant. When someone is supporting your journey and goals, you’re more likely to follow through.
Don’t have folks in your life who want to save money like you do? “Listen to podcasts, follow people on social media who are on the same journey, and read inspirational material to keep you focused and motivated,” Souffrant suggests. If the people around you aren’t changing, connect with online groups and resources who will help motivate you.

Money Saving Tip #10: Begin now.

“The longer we wait, the more money we lose. The power of time and accumulation is huge. The difference is in hundreds of thousands of dollars,” says Ince. If you start saving now, your interest doesn’t just accumulate on the initial amount but on the interest itself.
Ince provides an example: If you start saving $300 a month at age 25 and you do it continually (consistency is key), by the age of 65, you’ll have accumulated $1 million (assuming an 8 percent interest rate). If you wait 10 years and start at age 35, saving the same amount monthly with the same interest, you’ll only have $450,000 at 65. If you start at 45, the amount reduces to $178,000. At 55, it would only be $56,000.
But don’t be discouraged if you’re getting a later start. “Starting now is always the best choice,” says Ince. You will accumulate far more wealth by starting to save now than if you begin in 10 years—so it’s certainly better late than never, and better now than later!

These Are The Foods To Avoid While Breastfeeding (According To Experts)

As a new mama to your little peanut, you want to give the very best to their growing body. But it’s not that simple when your baby is gassy and fussy and you feel like you’ve tried everything to make them happier. Your pediatrician or even well-meaning friends may ask you if you’ve tried cutting out every food under the sun to see if that helps.
Not sure which foods might be having some adverse effects on your little one?
Luckily, most foods are still on the table while you’re breastfeeding. But there are some that should be avoided, because your diet should be about keeping your baby safe while still giving them all of the nutrients they need.
But maybe your little one is doing just fine, and you’re not so concerned about which foods to steer away from. Instead, you may be wondering, “What foods are good to eat while breastfeeding?” Whether you want to increase your milk supply or just ensure you’re being as healthy as possible, we talked to experts to get the deets on those foods too.
We asked a lactation counselor and two registered dietitians about the foods to avoid while breastfeeding—and the ones to pack into your diet.

Which Foods to Avoid While Breastfeeding

Determining which foods to avoid can be tricky, especially since searching the topic online can produce a variety of conflicting results.
“Make sure your information is coming from a valid source. Look at the credentials and licensure of anything you read or hear,” says certified lactation counselor Katie Halloran of Grand Rapids, Michigan. If you can’t find a clear answer online, Halloran recommends talking with your healthcare provider or a lactation consultant.

Avoid: High-Mercury Seafood

“It’s important to avoid all high-mercury fish, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, because mercury can be harmful to a developing baby,” explains Amy Gorin, registered dietitian nutritionist and owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area.
She says that “You can safely eat up to 12 ounces a week of lower-mercury fish, such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies, or 6 ounces of moderate-mercury fish, such as halibut and albacore tuna.”

Avoid: Certain Herbs and Herbal Supplements

Just because something is “all-natural” doesn’t mean it’s good for you and your precious little human.

“Herbs can have pharmacological side effects. So before you take any herbs, even if you hear it increases milk supply, talk first with your physician and your baby’s pediatrician. You want to ensure it doesn’t counteract with your medications or your health or your baby’s,” Halloran says.

Avoid: Too Much Caffeine

As a general rule, you shouldn’t give your baby what you shouldn’t be giving yourself anyway, like too much caffeine, says Halloran. But she does say that “If you drink some caffeine, that shouldn’t deter you from breastfeeding.”
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health states that “Drinking a moderate amount (one or two cups a day) of coffee or other caffeinated beverages does not cause a problem for most breastfeeding babies. Too much caffeine can cause the baby to be fussy or not sleep well.
So, no need to fret: Your morning latte can still be your energy lifesaver! Just think twice about having a cup every hour.

Avoid: Too Much Alcohol

Can’t breastfeeding mamas treat themselves to a glass of wine? The answer is yes. (And thank goodness for that!)
An Australian study showed that “low level drinking during breastfeeding is not linked with shorter breastfeeding duration or adverse outcomes in infants up to 12 months of age.”
“If you decide to drink, wait to breastfeed until the alcohol has cleared from your breast milk,” Gorin says. “This usually takes two to three hours for one alcoholic beverage (one 5-ounce glass of wine, one 12-ounce beer, or 1.5 ounces of liquor).”
Halloran agrees, saying that alcohol isn’t trapped in the breast milk, so pumping and dumping won’t remove the alcohol: “It simply takes time to get out of your system, just like it does your blood alcohol levels.”

Sushi and Breastfeeding: Is It Safe?

Time to celebrate another “yes”!
“Breastfeeding moms can eat any type of sushi, except poisonous blowfish, which probably no one should be eating,” says Kathy Kimbrough, registered dietitian at iLiveWell Nutrition in Austin, Texas.
Kimbrough says the challenge is that we never know when we will get food poisoning or what may cause it. “The best way is to be mindful of safe food-handling practices including hand-washing and ensuring proper temperatures for food storage. Eating fully cooked meats is one way to minimize risk. That said, I myself enjoy eating sushi and raw oysters occasionally, and I’m breastfeeding,” she explains.

Foods to Avoid While Breastfeeding to Prevent Colic

Why some babies are colicky sadly remains a mystery to doctors (and parents)—and it appears that the best cure is time. “Colic will likely improve or disappear by 3 or 4 months from birth,” says the Office on Women’s Health.
While changing your diet can sometimes help your colicky baby, holding or soothing your baby might also be the answer. “Eating regularly is the best ammunition for dealing with colic. Burp them consistently. Educate yourself on tummy massages and bicycling the legs to help their little belly pass gas,” encourages Kimbrough.

Common Causes of Fussy, Gassy Babies

As a dietitian and breastfeeding mom, Kimbrough finds that many women cut out certain foods, like spicy foods or dairy, if their baby is fussy or gassy. “In reality, there are very few things that actually cross over to the breast milk from the mother’s diet that makes them gassy,” she says.
But a protein or dairy allergy is different. “An allergy can manifest in many ways, and usually it’s pretty extreme. The stool will be green or contain mucus or blood, so it’s obvious something is wrong.”

Most babies, though, (unfortunately) will be gassy from time to time. This is normal: They have brand new bodies and digestive systems.
And it’s natural for moms to want to fix our baby’s irritability, but changing and limiting your diet can just be more challenging and stressful for everyone.
An elimination diet is not often the answer. “Remember to take care of yourself by eating well and eating regularly so you can take care of your baby,” says Kimbrough.

What to Eat While Breastfeeding

Thank goodness the menu is large when you’re breastfeeding!
Here are the key points to know.

Focus on a well-rounded diet.

“In order to nourish your baby, you have to nourish yourself. Aim for eating every 2 to 3 hours (just like baby!),” says Kimbrough. “Try to include carbohydrates, protein, and fat with a vegetable or a piece of fruit at each meal. And pair carbohydrates with protein for snacks. This balance will help your blood sugar remain within healthy fluctuations and keep your energy levels up.”
But Kimbrough reminds new moms to give themselves grace. “There were many times I wanted to stop breastfeeding because I was so tired. It can be really isolating when all you feel like you’re doing is pumping and breastfeeding.”
So go easy on yourself. Make simple meals, and don’t beat yourself up if you buy pre-chopped vegetables or packets of oatmeal instead of making it yourself on the stovetop.

Include fatty fish (in moderation).

Give your baby all of the powerful nutrients you can!
“Fatty fish such as salmon provides beneficial omega-3s to your baby,” says Gorin. So get cooking some tasty salmon recipes (or better yet, have your partner help).

Drink plenty of water.

“Hydration is very important for breastfeeding moms. You need extra water because your body uses water to produce breast milk,” shares Gorin. “It’s a good idea to drink a glass of water each time you nurse.”
In addition to having your water bottle nearly joined to your hip, hydrate your body more by eating water-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and soup, says Gorin.

Galactagogues: Foods That Increase Milk Supply

While many clinicians recommend continued use of prenatal vitamins during breastfeeding, there’s less consensus on the foods and herbs that increase milk supply.
“There are some foods that [are often said to increase] your milk supply, like milk thistle, oatmeal, fenugreek, and brewer’s yeast,” says Kimbrough. These supplements and herbs are commonly called galactagogues.
“Research indicates there are no long-term effects of increased milk supply for galactagogues,” explains Halloran. Unfortunately, there’s not much evidence of any food or herb being a magic bullet for increasing milk supply.
The best ways to maintain your milk supply are eating enough calories and drinking enough water, says Kimbrough. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that your body needs about 450 to 500 extra calories per day to make breast milk, meaning you really need to get those nutrients in to keep your supply up.
But even if you’re eating well and drinking enough water, you can still struggle with having enough breast milk or getting your baby to breastfeed often enough. And that’s where additional resources come in.
If you’re having trouble breastfeeding or feel your supply isn’t where it needs to be, seek assistance sooner rather than later, says Halloran.
Many hospitals employ lactation consultants who can offer you techniques and personalized guidance. And many communities host breastfeeding support groups. “A breastfeeding group allows you to talk about successes and challenges with other breastfeeding moms and get that extra support,” shares Kimbrough.

Before we know it, we let these negative thoughts cloud our minds and absorb our energy.
According to Eckhart Tolle, best-selling author and spiritual teacher, “the primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” So what if we spend a little more time and energy working on changing our thoughts? We’d be much happier and, chances are, much more successful, too.
That’s where positive affirmations come in. They help redirect our brains to send us encouraging, uplifting statements—instead of negative ones. These positive affirmations build our confidence, boost our mood, and increase our productivity and happiness.
By implementing positive affirmations into your daily routine, you can change your mindset—and, ultimately, change your life.

What are positive affirmations?

Positive affirmations aren’t just feel-good statements. When done right, they can actually alter the neural pathways in our brains.
“The mental image we carry of ourselves and our mind is referred to as our self-image,” explains Tanya Ince, PhD, a money coach who helps individuals reach their highest potential. “Our self-image determines our actions, decisions, behaviors, and what we believe to be true.”
Positive affirmations are statements that help to change our self-image. Even though our self-image begins forming when we’re infants, we can make alterations to it as adults. For instance, if we believe we’re unlovable, we can form a positive affirmation to alter that belief.
“The average human thinks 40,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day, but it can be even more than that,” says Ince. “Most of these thoughts are unconscious and happen automatically, like when we’re driving our cars.” To take control of those 60,000 thoughts (and our lives!), we can use affirmations to install new beliefs that support our goals.

The Three Main Types of Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations aren’t fluff: They remind our brains of what’s good, true, and helpful. They help us reach outside of those negative, circular thoughts. And they come in three main varieties.

Affirmations about your identity speak to who you are. Do you believe you’re a good mother? A faithful friend? A thoughtful person?

Positive Affirmations for Your Capabilities

What you believe you can and cannot do are beliefs about your skills. As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.”
Affirmations about your capabilities might sound like, “I have the skills to succeed at this project” or “I know how to host a dinner party for my friends.”

Positive Affirmations for Your Relationship With the World Around You

Do you see life as easy—or hard and full of problems? Are people on your side or against you?
What you believe about the world can be modified through affirmations to fit a more realistic, positive outlook. We can remind ourselves with affirmations like “The world has many good people in it” or “Life is full of little joys.”

How to Create Positive Affirmations That Actually Work

“Pre-made statements, like ones from a list of positive affirmations, aren’t very helpful and often times don’t work,” shares Katie Sanford, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, owner of Found Hope Counseling in Studio City, California. If you don’t believe your affirmation, it won’t resonate with you.
To build positive affirmations that will help manifest your dreams and change your life, follow these five key requirements.

1. Target an area where you want more balance.

“What area of your life would you like to expand or empower? Your health, career, finances, family life, or spirituality?” asks Ince. Develop a powerful affirmation to home in on the area where you’d like to see improvement.

2. Make it personal.

“Creating affirmations is an art. They must feel like they’re yours,” shares Ince. “Your affirmation has to create a feeling in order to change your neural pathways.” She shares an easy tip: Add your name to your affirmation, like “I, Melanie, find enjoyment in my work.”

3. State your affirmation in the positive—avoid negative wording.

According to Ince, your positive affirmation shouldn’t include the phrases, “I don’t,” “I won’t,” or “I can’t.”
So rather than saying, “I won’t let people walk all over me,” your affirmation stated in the positive could be: “I am strong and my opinions matter.”

4. Resist comparisons to other people and moments in time.

The words “better,” “worse,” “less,” and “more” shouldn’t make an appearance in your affirmation. Don’t compare yourself with your past self or other people.
To make this easier, Ince explains that positive affirmations should be written in the present tense, not the future. Instead of “I will love myself,” say, “I do love myself.” Instead of “I’ll exercise more,” try: “I take care of my body every day.”

5. Be realistic, but stretch yourself.

“Your affirmations need to be realistic, or you’ll feel like you’re lying to yourself,” says Sanford. Your positive affirmation must be true yet helpful. In other words, it should feel attainable but push you toward empowerment and positive self-image.
If you don’t feel confident in a certain area, like your job, don’t create an affirmation that says you’re the next CEO. Instead, use an affirmation like, “I am skilled and resourceful. I can always figure things out.”

When and How to Implement Positive Affirmations

Now that we know how to create award-winning, life-changing affirmations, how the heck do we use them?
Combining a variety of methods works best, explains Ince. Aim to receive your affirmations visually and audibly as often as possible.
Write your affirmations on a sticky note and adhere them to your bathroom mirror or your computer monitor. “You can also record them using your cell phone and play them back to yourself,” shares Ince.
If you meditate regularly, repeat your affirmation over and over throughout your practice. “You can even write down your affirmation 10 to 15 times on a piece of paper. It can be surprising how well writing repetition works,” says Ince.
If you have a partner or friend who wants to help, they can even read or say your affirmation to you. When you hear your affirmation, like “Jasmine has fun in her life.” Respond with: “Yes, it’s true.” In this way, you’re both accepting and confirming your own affirmation.
“I’ve even used positive affirmations in group sessions. It’s helpful because as people are saying and hearing each other’s affirmations, they naturally begin to reaffirm them for each other. When someone says, ‘I’m capable,’ and a room full of people nod, the affirmation sinks in deeper,” Sanford says. She also notices that people’s postures change when they say their affirmations. Their heads are up and their shoulders are back.

In the morning, our brains are the most open to change,” says Ince. So when you’re lathering up your hair with shampoo or washing your face, repeat your affirmation a few times.
Include your affirmation in your bedtime routine, too, because your subconscious mind helps to install your affirmations as you sleep, Ince explains.

How long does it take for positive affirmations to work?

Ever since Maxwell Maltz published Psycho-Cybernetics in 1960, it’s been believed that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Newer research out of the University College London indicates that it actually takes around 66 days, or about two months. “Changing your self-image or a long-held belief can take longer than that,” explains Ince. “It’s important not to give up when there’s some resistance. Keep going.”
Implementing a positive affirmation doesn’t have to be a super serious endeavor, either, encourages Ince. “Think of it as a playful exercise, an experiment.” Try repeating your affirmation for three to four weeks to see what happens. What new opportunities pop up? What new feelings or beliefs do you have about yourself and the world?
“It doesn’t take long to use your positive affirmations every day. A few minutes in the morning or throughout the day are all you need. The more reminders, the better—and the faster the change will happen,” shares Ince.
“Everyone has negative core beliefs, they just affect us differently. All of us can benefit from looking at what we’re believing,” says Sanford. “Everyone can benefit from positive affirmations.”

6 Ways To Stay Calm And Positive During Your First Trimester

After the second dark line appeared on my at-home pregnancy test, joy and excitement jolted through my veins.
But some worries snuck their way in, too: Would our baby make it to full term? Would he or she be healthy? Was I fit to be a mom?
I struggled to reconcile the doubts in my mind even though I was incredibly thankful for the new little life inside of me. And I’m not the only one! More than one in 10 women experience anxiety during pregnancy.
If you’ve experienced a miscarriage or dealt with infertility, the first trimester can be an emotional roller coaster. Even if you’ve had smooth-sailing baby-making in the past, getting through those first 12 weeks isn’t always easy.

The first 12? 13? 14? How long is the first trimester, anyway?

Surprisingly, there isn’t a consensus on how long the first trimester lasts. Based on various sources, 12 to 14 weeks is generally accepted. The most common definition seems to be that the end of your 12th week marks the conclusion of your first trimester. According to one pregnancy app, that means your baby will be the size of a lemon!
Because the highest percentage of miscarriages occur in the first trimester, it’s common (and understandable) to be nervous and take all the precautions you can. But if you’re in the thick of first trimester anxiety, there’s hope! There are plenty of ways to help you stay relaxed during these initial weeks so you can enjoy more of the journey with your new precious gift.

First Trimester Tip 1: Focus on what you can control.

Human beings tend to love being in the driver’s seat, but some things are entirely out of our hands.
“The statistics around first trimester miscarriages are tough,” admits certified nurse midwife Theresa Starr. It may be helpful to know, though, that approximately 50 percent of miscarriages in the first trimester are due to fetal chromosomal abnormalities, not anything the mother did.
While smoking, drinking, and using drugs can impact your chances of miscarriage, not much else does, thank goodness!
For instance, attending a regular aerobics class or missing one prenatal vitamin shouldn’t be cause for concern. (I’m even guilty of obsessing over having sniffed a lemongrass essential oil!)
“We usually don’t know why a first trimester miscarriage happens. We let women know that they couldn’t have prevented it—that there was nothing they did wrong, and that a miscarriage probably won’t affect their ability to get pregnant in the future,” explains Starr.
So rather than letting unnecessary worry occupy your headspace, focus your energy on what you can control: your diet, exercise, and the amount of rest you get each night.
Eating healthy and participating in regular exercise will help you feel better both physically and mentally. Making small changes during pregnancy will help you and baby be as healthy as possible,” explains certified doula and childbirth educator Marisol Garcia.

Aim for a well-rounded first trimester diet.

Wondering what to eat in the first trimester? Focus primarily on receiving a breadth of nutrients.
A well-rounded diet of healthy fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fruits, and vegetables are recommended for expectant moms.
“Studies have shown that women who have a balanced diet and consume 80–100 grams of protein per day are less likely to feel morning sickness. Eating smaller and more frequent meals helps too,” shares Garcia.
But don’t worry if you miss a day of healthy eating; just get back on track tomorrow!

Practice light to moderate exercise during the first trimester.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that if you’re healthy and have been given the go-ahead from your doctor, it’s safe to continue or start most types of exercise. In fact, studies show that exercise benefits both you and your baby. Not too surprising, right?
But to ensure you’re getting in proper first trimester workouts, it’s helpful to know what’s safe and what’s not.
The most general recommendation is that you can continue any exercises you were doing previously. For instance, “if you lifted weights prior to getting pregnant, you can continue doing so. Just remember your center of gravity shifts, so take things a bit slower. Stay well hydrated and avoid activities where you have a risk of falling,” explains Starr.

First Trimester Tip 2: Choose your sources for information wisely.

“I really encourage expectant moms to learn as much as they can—but in a healthy way,” says Galena Rhoades, PhD, research associate professor of psychology at the University of Denver and project director of MotherWise Colorado.
It’s convenient to pop every question into a search engine, but it can sometimes cause more harm than good if you’re not careful about which sites you’re visiting. Dr. Google isn’t actually a doctor—and it’s not your friend either.
Rhoades further explains that not all online sources should be avoided but that you should be mindful of the sources you choose. “If you’re reading an online forum, it’s hard to know how accurate that information is. You’re likely to find information that keeps you worried, because people typically don’t post about things that go well.”
As Starr notes, it’s best to “focus on factual information with scientific evidence.”
Outside of the internet, books written by professionals are another avenue for seeking reliable information, explains Rhoades. If you’re unable to find a definitive answer online or in a book, don’t hesitate to call up your OB provider.

First Trimester Tip 3: Establish a support system (even if you’re not sharing the news publicly yet).

Whether you’re feeling all of the lovely first trimester symptoms like fatigue and nausea or you’re one of the lucky few who aren’t, having support gives you strength when you need it most.
Many women fall into telling someone or not telling someone they’re pregnant based on what they feel they should do rather than what’s best for them. “Instead, make a mindful decision of who you want support from,” encourages Rhoades.
You may feel obligated to first share the news with your parents or sister, when perhaps having a best friend or co-worker by your side would be beneficial.
Form a plan with your partner regarding who you want to share your pregnancy news with and when, so you can get the support you need.
Unsure of who to lean on?
“Look for people who are supportive and in line with your beliefs,” suggests Garcia. Almost everyone has an opinion about pregnancy and parenthood, so “direct your energy to someone who carries similar views.”  
Rhoades also stresses the importance of building a community of women or couples who are going through the same experience. Sometimes this happens naturally if you have friends or family who are pregnant at the same time. Other times you may need to find a pregnancy support group or a studio that specializes in prenatal yoga.

First Trimester Tip 4: Practice self-care (and don’t be shy about pampering yourself!).

With so much focus on the baby, we can forget to take care of ourselves during pregnancy (surprise, surprise). But self-care is vital: It helps keep us healthy, sane, and energized.
Having worked with expectant moms for more than 20 years, Starr expresses the joy of pregnant women now having a range of self-care options: prenatal massages, prenatal yoga, and even guided meditation apps. Even something as simple as taking a bath (sounds amazing, right?) or asking your partner to make dinner can offer you the relief and care you need.
That’s right: Go ahead and put your feet up!
“It’s also important to release any tension and insecurities within you,” explains Garcia. If you’re experiencing problems with your loved ones, address insecurities and emotions before your baby’s arrival to help ensure healthier relationships both during pregnancy and parenthood. If you feel tension in your body, practice meditation, prenatal yoga, and relaxation exercises at home.
No matter how you decide to pamper yourself during your first trimester (which you should definitely do), just be sure it’s safe. The American Pregnancy Association recommends not elevating your body temperature to 101º F or above as it can cause concerns during pregnancy. So steer clear of hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms to eliminate this risk.

First Trimester Tip 5: Bond with your baby daily.

Early on in the pregnancy, it can be tough to feel connected with your baby, says Starr, “especially if you’re not feeling well due to morning sickness and fatigue.”

But bonding with your baby for at least a few minutes each day can reduce your anxiety and stress while pregnant, says Rhoades. “Set aside time by yourself or with your partner to think about and talk through what you’re experiencing. When you take a moment to remind yourself that there’s a baby growing, you become more mindful of what your body’s doing, and that’s incredibly valuable.”
If you’re experiencing anxiety while pregnant, Rhoades recommends setting aside dedicated time to worry as well. Rather than letting fearful thoughts infiltrate your work day or distract you when you’re out with friends, you can say to yourself, “OK, I have time to think and worry about this tomorrow.” Devoting time to worry has long been a technique used by therapists to treat anxiety, and it can be particularly helpful to expectant moms.

First Trimester Tip 6: Connect with additional resources.

“Women feel increases and dips of hormonal changes during pregnancy and postpartum. It’s important to practice self-care and address any mental health issues with your medical professional,” explains Garcia. Even though you may be excited about the new baby, it’s still a huge life change, whether this is your first or fourth child.
So remember: You’re far from alone.
“It’s incredibly common to experience stress while pregnant,” Rhoades confirms. “If you’ve been feeling worried or anxious for several days or more in the last two weeks, it’s worth talking with your provider or therapist.” Professional assistance can be found in a counselor, therapist, or even books.
Processing what’s happening for you and learning techniques to manage your stress, anxiety, or depression will benefit you throughout your pregnancy—and after you welcome your beautiful new baby into the world.
