There’s no one path to wellness. In a world filled with dictatorial diets, detailed skincare routines, endless pressure to stay fit, and apps that nudge us to meditate on schedule, it’s totally refreshing to remind ourselves that we can pick and choose the practices that make us feel our best—even if that changes day to day. But the idea of individualized wellness isn’t a novel concept—it’s exactly what Ayurvedic medicine has prescribed for 5,000 years. Ayurvedic medicine is widely considered the world’s oldest healthcare system—yet, with so many of us seeking alternatives and complementary approaches to traditional Western medicine, it’s more relevant than ever.
What is Ayurvedic medicine?
On a metaphysical level, Ayurveda is built around the five elements of ether, fire, air, water, and earth, and says we’re all composed of three distinctive doshas, or energies, known as vata, pitta, and kapha. The Indian philosophy finds no separation between the mind and body; rather, every part of ourselves is intertwined deeply with spirituality and the environment. Ayurvedic medicine aims to determine what you need and when, in effort to optimize your wellbeing. “Ayurveda is the ancient Indian science which I call the manual for living a healthy life. In the age of modern medicine … Ayurveda can bring a fresh breeze,” explainsSeema Datta, an Ayurvedic medicine consultant with more than 20 years of experience. “Ayurvedic medicine focuses on prevention of the disease first and treatment when needed. It includes diet and lifestyle, meditation, breathing, positive affirmations, herbs, and various physical treatments.” Here’s the thing, though: If you’re looking for scientific proof for most of the promised benefits of Ayurvedic medicine, you won’t find it (at least not according to theNational Institutes of Health). But anyone who’s dabbled in wellness rituals knows that these practices are instead much more about whether something makes sense for your life in a given moment. And that idea perfectly complements the philosophy behind Ayurveda. Plus, the vast array of Ayurvedic medicine practices have little to no risk of harm, so you’ve got nothing to lose. Devoted Ayurvedic practitioners use the teachings of the original Vedic texts (the oldest scriptures of Hinduism) to influence every aspect of their lives, from precisely when they wake up to what to eat when the seasons change. In short, there are lots and lots of rules. But it doesn’t have to be an all-consuming routine. The beauty of Ayurvedic medicine is that you can select the exact combination of practices that work for you—and leave the rest behind. Ready to dive in? Here are some easy ways to incorporate Ayurvedic medicine into your modern life.
Take the Ayurvedic approach to sleep.
Human beings used to rest when it got dark and wake up around sunrise. But in our modern world, our nature as diurnal animals is continually disrupted by our work-focused culture and endless screen time. How many times have you stayed up way too late scrolling through the ‘gram like a zombie (and woken up feeling like one)? Strict Ayurvedic medicine recommends impossibly early bedtimes (i.e. sunset). That’s when we’re most likely to getnon-REM sleep—the kind of shut-eye that actually makes us feel refreshed when we get back up. But since hitting the hay at dusk just isn’t realistic, modern Ayurvedic practitioners say going to bed by 10 p.m. is a happy middle ground. Adjusting your sleep schedule isn’t easy, but it can be done over a couple of weeks. Work on building a better bedtime routine to get your brain ready for sleep earlier in the night. “Notice when you first start yawning and begin your wind-down practice then,” says Cat Pacini, Ayurvedic lifestyle consultant atKripalu Center for Yoga & Health. “Put away the electronics, read an actual book or write in a journal, and consider doing some restorative yoga or stretching—anything that shifts the energy to help you ground.” Ideally, Ayurvedic medicine recommends rising just before sunrise. Easier said than done, but setting your alarm an hour or two before you have to jet off to work will give you time for contemplation and mindfulness—and help you become a more balanced version of yourself. “Even spending just five minutes in the morning to check in with yourself and how you feel will set the right energetic tone for the day,” explains Pacini.
Build a better bathroom routine with Ayurvedic medicine.
Do you brush your teeth and wash your face in the a.m.? Then you’ve already begun incorporating Ayurvedic medicine into your life. “Ayurveda says to do a whole routine in the morning,” says Pacini. “If you really did what the classic texts say, it would take a couple of hours. But the basic idea is you wake up early and take care of your senses.” Since you probably don’t have the time to spend half the morning primping, focus on a few key practices. Ayurvedic practitioners strongly recommend including tongue scraping in your dental hygiene. It helps “clear toxins, bacteria, debris” and other gunk from your tongue, according to Sahara Rose Ketabi, author of the Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda. Just place the scraper on the back of your tongue, gently scrape it forward 10 times, then rinse out your mouth. Ayurvedic medicine also encourages people to give their eyes a little TLC with a gentle spritz of rosewater. “It’s really refreshing, especially for people who do a lot of computer work or face a lot of pollution. Rosewater is cooling—it helps calm red eyes,” says Pacini. Finally, drink a full glass of room-temperature water before ingesting anything else in the morning. It stimulates the “fire” of the digestive system, according to Ayurvedic medicine, and rehydrates you after 8 hours of sleep.
Take care of your skin.
Given that Ayurvedic medicine is about total body healing, it makes sense that it prescribes specific rituals for the largest organ: our skin. Ayurvedic skincare practices will help keep your skin healthy and might even give you an all-day glow. “Try garshana, which means dry brushing,” says Cat Aldana, an integrative Ayurvedic medicine practitioner and founder of the corporate wellness and Ayurvedic retreat companyEat Stretch Nap. “This practice involves using a dry brush to brush skin (like you would hair) in long upward motions towards the heart to circulate energy, increase blood flow, and help shed dry skin. Dry brushing is typically done for 1-2 minutes before a shower and leaves you feeling super refreshed and clean.” You know how glorious your skin and body feel after a massage? You don’t need to go to a spa to get that feeling—give yourself Ayurvedic medicine oil massages, known as abhyanga, right at home. Choose a natural oil, such as organic coconut oil, warm it up, and gently massage it into your body, scalp, and hair, says Aldana. “After you have finished rubbing in the oil, set a timer and lay down in savasana on a towel for 5-20 minutes, or however long your body needs to rest,” she says. “This practice is perfect for smoothing and nurturing your skin while detoxifying the body. The best time for an oil massage is right before a shower. It’s also also a perfect opportunity to notice and appreciate your body for all that it does for you.”
Eat the Ayurvedic way.
Ayurvedic medicine gets pretty detailed when describing what you should eat. It takes into account which dosha is predominant and offers guidelines on meal times, portion sizes, and the best kinds of foods for your body as the seasons change. The idea is that mindful eating fuels our bodies and acts as a deterrent for disease. If you want to dabble in the Ayurvedic diet, start by regulating the size of your meals. While Western cultures typically make breakfast or dinner the largest meal of the day, Ayurvedic medicine recommends lunch as your main meal—that’s when you’ll need the most energy and have ample time to digest properly. “It shouldn’t be a huge meal, but make it the one with the densest amount of nutrients,” says Pacini. “Digestion is strongest at the pitta time of day [10 a.m.-2 p.m.]. Take a lunch break and focus on what you’re eating.” Think salad is your best bet for a healthy, nutrient-rich meal? You’re not wrong, but Ayurvedic medicine believes that cooked food is a little easier on the digestive system. Opt for lightly cooked vegetables and lots of whole foods whenever possible. “Stay clear from excess cold, dry, and raw foods, which can cause a vata imbalance. Vata is a cold, dry energy, therefore we must counterbalance it with warm, moist foods,” says Ketabi. “Make your salad and have soup on the side. Drink hot water with your green juice. Use room temperature instead of frozen fruits in your smoothie. Warm your body so your digestion can work more effectively, allowing you to absorb more nutrients.” As much as you can, cook your own foods to align your body with Ayurvedic medicine. The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook: A Seasonal Guide to Living and Eating Well by Kate O’Donnell offers plenty of easy, tasty recipes backed by vedic knowledge, and serves as a thorough starter guide to Ayurvedic cooking. Finally, eat slowly and mindfully—the Ayurvedic way. Don’t rush through meals or try to work as you chew. “Actually sitting and eating is really important so we can digest our food well. That’s what’s giving us energy and strength,” says Pacini. Ayurvedic medicine provides plenty of tools to help us build healthy, self-care lifestyles. Try out the rituals of this ancient philosophy to see what helps you thrive. And if certain practices don’t appeal to you, ditch ‘em. It’s about making time for yourself, not forcing you into a rigid routine—so embrace it!
Sex toys for women have come a long way from the standard-issue vibrator. Nowadays, you can find discreet devices that simulate oral sex, multipurpose magic wands that bend to your body, sculptural toys that are beautiful enough to display—even hands-free spot stimulators that are controlled from your smartphone. It’s not that there’s anything inherently wrong with the phallic playthings of the past, but women’s bodies are super complicated. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to pleasure. Anyone with a vagina has known this since, well, forever, so it should come as no surprise that some of the most innovative sex toys for women are designed by women themselves. Meet the empowered ladies behind 10 pleasure shops and sex toys for women that are putting orgasms in your hands and creating a more sex positive world for all of us.
[sul title=”Le Wand” subheader=”An unexpectedly innovative sex toy for women in a familiar shape”] At first glance, Le Wand might look like a number of other vibrating sex toys for women out there (except its smooth, pearly finish makes it much prettier). But this magic wand (designed by a team of women) features 20 different vibration patterns and 10 speeds, putting it worlds above the competition in terms of personalized pleasure. This sex toy for women is also rechargeable, splash-proof, and cordless (for seamless orgasms). “Tapping into the pleasure your body is capable of is a powerful experience, and we created Le Wand to help people do that,” says Alicia Sinclair, CEO of Le Wand and a certified sex educator.
If the 200 combinations of vibrations weren’t enough, Le Wand has also launched an assortment ofattachments you can pop on Le Wand for even more variety. Therippled silicone head promises both clitoral and vaginal stimulation, while thefirm curve attachment targets the G-spot. For Sinclair, it was about offering endless options of sensations from smartly-designed sex toys for women. “We want to give women, and people of all gender identities, the power of choice when exploring their sexuality, rather than a prescribed method for getting off,” she says.
[sul title=”TickleKitty” subheader=”Sex toys for women, curated by a sexology expert”] Sadie Allison knows a thing or two about sex toys for women—she holds a doctorate from theInstitute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and has authoredsix “how-to” sex books. So when you browse the handpicked products on offer at Allison’s online sex toy boutique, TickleKitty, you really can’t go wrong with anything that ends up in your shopping cart. “Launching my boutique was a natural extension to my mission [of sharing my knowledge on sexuality],” she says. The selective stock of sex toys for women at TickleKitty feels exclusive, yet anything but limited. Customer favorites include theWomanizer Starlet(an air puff toy similar to the Satisfyer), Le Wand, and theRocking G Rabbit (“which has an independent stroker that moves in the ‘come-hither’ motion,” says Allison). “I select toys that are female body-safe, made with the highest quality materials, offer a multitude of functions and vibrations, and come at a variety of price-points so everyone—from the newcomer to the aficionado—can enjoy,” she says.
[sul title=”Dame Products” subheader=”Raising our expectations of sex toys for women”] Alex Fine has a “true passion for passion.” But rather than pursuing a career in sex therapy, she channeled what she learned from her clinical psychology education at Columbia University into something else entirely: creating sex toys for women. The products out there didn’t excite her—so she decided to start creating her own. “As a woman, I felt that we weren’t expecting enough from sex toys simply because we weren’t expecting enough from our own sexuality,” says Fine, now CEO of Dame Products, a sex toy company for women.
She experimented with creating vibrators at home, soon coming up with two distinctive sex toys for women: Fin and Eva. Fin’s a vibrator worn on your fingers, intended to amplify the human touch through clitoral stimulation. Eva, on the other hand, looks like an emerald beetle, whose wings tuck under the labia and whose buzzing body rests atop your clitoris. It stays in place, even during penetrative sex. Innovative products aren’t the only thing that sets Dame Products apart from other companies making sex toys for women, though. The store offers a hassle-free return policy—something rare in this market—and it speaks to Dame’s focus on creating a sex-positive, shame-free experience. “Returns are about making our customers feel like they can explore our products without the pressure of worrying they won’t work for them,” says Fine. “Being able to return a vibrator is a really important part of educating people that not every sex toy will work for you, and that’s OK.”
[sul title=”Crescendo by MysteryVibe” subheader=”Bendable, body-adaptive sex toys for women”] Size might not be everything, but angles have a surprising level of influence over sexual pleasure, according to Stephanie Alys, CEO of MysteryVibe. The company’s luxury vibrator, the Crescendo, features a long, thick body that can bend into tons of different shapes, adapting to any body. Plus, the six built-in, buzzing motors are nothing to scoff at. “No two bodies are exactly the same. Crescendo’s bendable feature was designed with everyone’s pleasure in mind, and to give the user the power of customization. For example, the G-spot is often elusive to people with vulvas, and a toy that simply curves in one direction may not be your perfect curve. Crescendo allows for experimentation to unlock your personalized pleasure spots,” she says. Playing around with the bendy, snap-bracelet like vibrator is so exciting, you might not even realize that it connects to the MysteryVibe app. But between the app’s remote control option and the endless downloadable vibration patterns, you might want to keep one hand on your phone.
[sul title=”Squish from Unbound” subheader=”An egg-shape sex toy for women you won’t want to let go of”] One look at Squish and it’s doubtful you’d realize it’s a sex toy for women. The design of the squishy pink egg is closer to one of those battery-powered facial cleansing devices than something you’d use to reach orgasm. But this little thing is as satisfying as it is inconspicuous, using the power of your squeeze to control its every rumble and vibe.
“Squish’s haptic technology is both deeply personal and incredibly intuitive. The harder you squeeze it, the harder it vibrates,” says Polly Rodriguez, CEO and co-founder of Unbound, the company behind Squish. “We found that our customers wanted a product that was easy-to-use and not necessarily phallic.” Squish is not only subtle—it’s also smart. This sex toy for women has built-in memory that allows you to record and replay pulsation patterns you create. The customizability makes Squish appeal to women with all kinds of preferences, from tender, low-key purring to powerful vibrations. The most challenging part of using this innovative product is finding the perfect pattern for you—but figuring it out will be infinitely fun.
[sul title=”Vibrant” subheader=”Feel good. Do good.”] If you’ve ever felt even a smidge of guilt from giving yourself pleasure, online sex toy store Vibrant will help make sure it never happens again. The boutique sends the proceeds from the sales of vibrators, butt plugs, dildos, lubes, and all kinds of other products toPlanned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains (PPRM)—an organization where CEO Angela Wells worked for 15 years before founding Vibrant. “I tasked myself with creating a solution to fill the funding gap at PPRM by creating a social enterprise that supports the message and values of the organization,” she says. “Our commitment to body-safe products underscores Planned Parenthood’s commitment to the health and safety of patients. Everything that we do is very intentional and created with the goal of inclusivity, sex positivity, and creating a comfortable, fun environment to talk about sex.” While Vibrant’s sex toys come in every shape, size, color, and price-point imaginable, the clear winner among customers is theMimic by Clandestine, says Wells. “[For] folks with a vulva who use their fingers for external masturbation, this vibrator is a perfect extension of the hand. It’s pliable so that you can provide the right amount of pressure for your body and the vibrations start gentle enough for those who are sensitive or new to vibration,” she explains. But why not try out a few different sex toys for women from Vibrant? After all, it’s for a good cause.
[sul title=”Satisfyer Pro II” subheader=”The sex toy for women that conjures up orgasms with air”] Many sex toys for women rely on direct contact with your lady bits to make you climax. Not the case with the Satisfyer Pro II. Instead, this radical gadget gently suctions over the clitoris and releases pleasurable air waves to create mind-blowing sensations—perfect for women who don’t always get off with internal stimulation alone.
“Unlike many contemporary solo play items, the Satisfyer II is designed to be non-touch. A comfortable seal is formed around your love bead and the unique air pressure technology takes you from the starting block right to the finish line,” says Melissa Kramer, who works on the Satisfyer design team. Online reviewers say that the Satisfyer takes some time to get used to, but ultimately rave about rapid-fire orgasms unlike anything they’ve been able to get from conventional personal massagers. Who knew little puffs of air could hold so much power?
[sul title=”Maude” subheader=”Sex toys and accessories for minimalists with an eye for design”] It’s exciting to play around with bendable, buzzing, high-tech sex toys for women. But sometimes, you just want a straight-forward assortment of products and accessories without all the bells and whistles. Enter Maude. With the motto “sex made simple,” this online store has curated its stock down to four essentials: ultra-thin latex condoms, Vibe (a body-safe silicone vibrator), silicone-based lubricant, and aloe-based lube. “We hope to be the company that’s with you throughout your entire life and that means creating well-made products that are easy-to-use, timeless, and essential,” says Maude cofounder Eva Goicochea. “Simplicity means inclusivity and that is the foundation of our company.”
[sul title=”Emojibator” subheader=”Giggle your way to orgasm with emoji-themed sex toys for women”] Can a vibrator that looks the eggplant emoji actually be taken seriously in a sex positive world? Hell yes, says Kris Fretz, who cofounded Emojibator, a company that sells personal massagers shaped like the most suggestive emojis. The friendly, LOL-worthy design actually makes sex toys for women more approachable for people who might otherwise be too shy to buy them. “We love using humor as the driving component to our brand and customer experience. Obviously, human beings love to laugh, and we knew [that people] love to communicate with emojis,” says Fretz. “Our tagline, ‘Go Fuck Yourself. Literally.’ is meant to remind women that orgasms and masturbation are natural parts of life, and they should feel zero shame when they explore their sexuality with sex toys.”
Each of Emojibator’s sex toys for women feature 10 vibration settings, medical-grade silicone, and waterproof materials, so it’s really just about finding the design that speaks most to you. Choose from eggplant (the most popular), chili pepper (the pointy tip’s great for G-spot stimulation), or banana (with firm ridges that making playing fun). Once you start using the Emojibator, texting will never be quite the same.
[sul title=”Good Vibrations” subheader=”The legacy shop for sex toys for women”] Good Vibrations’ standards for sex toys for women were so high, it only sold about a dozen options in its San Francisco boutique when it opened in 1977. Fast-forward more than 40 years later, and you’ll find more than 1,000 products in the online store, including vibrators, dildos, and anal toys. “Today, sex toys have emerged from the shadows,” says Carol Queen, staff sexologist and historian at Good Vibrations. “Premium or designer sex toys, especially vibrators, have overtaken the marketplace—even the old-school manufacturers have upped their game as technology and materials have changed.” While most of the sex toys for women available at Good Vibrations have changed over the years, one has stood the test of time:The Magic Wand. “This is the [sex toy for women] that we’ve recommended for over 40 years,” says Queen. “It’s strong, with a vibration type that many people really love. Its tennis ball-sized head provides diffused stimulation and its length makes it easy to use. It’s well-made and tends to last a long time.” A sex toy for women that’s been a best-seller for decades? We’re in.

And if citrus isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Mangiacotti offers a range of other surface spray scents to choose from, including pomegranate, white spruce, ginger lime, and clementine.

Dealing with messes in the garage gets a lot easier, though, with the Vacmaster Wet/Dry Vacuum.
It’ll pick up saw dust, broken glass, liquid spills, feathers, nails, and just about anything else you can think of. Plus, the wall mount makes this vacuum super convenient to grab at a moment’s notice, without taking up the limited floor space in your garage. Vacmaster 5-Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum, $94.89

Has a stain ever seemed so embedded into a surface, you’ve just learned to live with it? Don’t give up hope yet. Mr. Clean Magic Erasers somehow expunge even deep-set stains you thought were permanent.
We’re talking nail polish dried on a bathroom sink, greasy handprints on white walls, burn marks on countertops, and scuffs on floors. If the Magic Eraser doesn’t get out a particular blemish, chances are it’s there for good—fortunately, there are very few blemishes it can’t handle.
Cleaning the floors used to be a dirty job that left your back aching and your hands pruny. Not anymore—the O-Cedar EasyWring Microfiber Spin Mop and Bucket Floor Cleaning System has an innovative design that allows you to wring out the mop without bending down or using your hands.

No more getting grossed out by smoothie gunk in a straw or strange film in a bottle.
18. A Multi-Talented Machine With the Power of Steam
Chemicals aren’t the only thing you can use to sanitize your home. A steam cleaner also has the power to kill bacteria on tons of surfaces, solely with the power of (you guessed it!) steam. The McCulloch MC1275 Heavy-Duty Steam Cleaner comes with 18 accessories that you can use to pump steam over large surface areas, onto greasy oven doors, through upholstery, and onto patio furniture.
Sanitizing isn’t the only effect, though—the steam cleaner can also help you remove stains and odors. Talk about a multi-talented machine!
Your forks and knives may look clean after you wash them, but they can actually get pretty cruddy after a while. If it’s time to give your silverware a little extra attention, break out the Joseph Joseph BladeBrush Knife and Cutlery Cleaner Brush.
The gadget’s like a little jaw with sturdy bristles that clamp down on a piece of cutlery and grind away anything that’s caked on either side. The textured grip also helps keep your hands safe when you’re washing sharp knives or blender blades.
If you thought cleaning the microwave had to be a drag, think again: The Home-X Steam’n Mama Microwave Cleaner not only makes it easier to clean this quick-cook appliance, it’s downright fun to use.
Fill the plastic doll with vinegar and water, then microwave it. She’ll blast intense steam throughout the microwave, loosening up stubborn splatters (including pasta sauce and melted cheese) that wipe off as easily as they would from a non-stick surface. If you’ve got a kid at home, this whimsical device might be just what you need to get them to finally help out with chores.
No matter how much elbow grease you put into a cleaning project, you’ll never get something spotless if you’re using the wrong size brush. This five-in-one tool comes with brushes in a variety of shapes and sizes, including an arc-shaped brush and a long, flat brush. The plastic bristles help remove dirt from even the narrowest grooves around your home.

Apply the non-toxic spray to the stain, rub it with your fingers, and blot it with a clean, absorbent cloth. Like magic, the stains disappear and your carpets look good as new. Folex Carpet Spot Remover, $10.99
23. Get rid of gross goo.
Gooey problems can cause serious headaches when you’re cleaning your home. How do you even tackle decal residue on a window, chewing gum dried on a floor, or a forgotten layer of thick grease on a stovetop? Goo Gone, that’s how.
This all-purpose goo remover can be used on carpet, upholstery, clothing, and any hard surface. It works in just a few minutes and lifts even the toughest gunk from almost anywhere. Hardened wax, old tape, tree sap, tar, crayon marks—you name it, and Goo Gone can probably take care of it.
True cookware aficionados say you should never clean your cast iron pan with soap. But c’mon—you cook with that thing all the time and it could probably use a scrubbing once in a while.
Fortunately, The Ringer Stainless Steel Cast Iron Cleaner is here to help. The stainless steel sheet (which looks like armor for a knight) removes dirt without the use of soap, while simultaneously protecting the seasoning you’ve built on the pan throughout years of hard work over a hot stove. It’ll be gleaming the next time you go to cook with it.
Between the baked-on crud and the surface area of the grates, ovens and grills are notoriously difficult to clean. It’s not even worth trying without a product that’s made for the job. Lucky for you, the Krud Kutter Oven & Grill Cleaner provides a cleansing foam that easily coats every surface of these appliances and penetrates deep into grime.
The fast-acting formula cuts down how long you’ll spend scrubbing, leaving far more time for things you really want to do with the oven and grill—like baking and barbecuing.
Some of the grungiest areas of the house are hidden in plain sight. Take a peek under your faucet, for example. You’re bound to see mineral build-up and particles lurking from the very place you go for a glass of water.

Not only does it work on your bathroom and kitchen faucets, it can also clean your coffee machine, your iron, and many other places where water’s depositing lime. Remember how crisp your white sheets, towels, and T-shirts looked when you first bought them? You may not have noticed it, but their color has probably dulled with use.
Revive them to their original brightness with Summit Brands OUT White Brite Laundry Whitener. It can reverse accidental color bleeds, erase red clay stains, and remove marks from iron-fortified baby formula. Remember: A plain white tee never goes out of style—it’s worth keeping yours as bright as possible.
You probably have a few cans of compressed air, such as Blow Off General Purpose Compressed Air, lying around your office. But here’s why you might want to pick up some cans to have at home: This stuff works wonders on keeping dust off your sensitive electronics and delicate valuables.
Notice crumbs in your keyboard, dust around a light switch, particles in a speaker, or grit in the inset of a table? One blast from a can of compressed air will blow the residue away in a flash.
29. Ditch your ladder and clean top-floor windows with this.
Be honest: When’s the last time you cleaned the windows on the upper floors of your home? If it’s been awhile, we can’t blame you—it requires a dangerous, exhausting climb up a ladder and usually ends up taking all day long. But there’s another way to get these windows clean: The Fuller BrushWindow Cleaner.
All you need to do is dump the cleaning crystals into the jug, attach a hose, and then blast your windows with your feet planted on the ground. It’ll clean dirt, pollen, and dust right through your screens in just a few minutes. The gadget moonlights as a patio furniture cleaner, so it’s worth having around.
Upholstery and carpets aren’t the only things that can be cleaned with steam. You can now clean your hard floors with the Sienna Luna Plus Steam Cleaning System.
In addition to steam cleaning, the machine also uses “sonic micro-pulse vibration technology” that promises to break up grime on your floors. Plus, it has an LED light that can expose grimy areas you might have otherwise missed. This is a steam cleaner made for the 21st century. Sienna Luna Plus Steam Cleaning System, $124.42

Why not switch to a one-and-done solution, like the Sticky Buddy Reusable Lint Roller? It picks up crumbs, hair, dust, and other particles from all kinds of fabric.
And once you’re done cleaning, there’s no need to fumble around, trying to find the end of the roll. Simply wash away the debris, dry it off, and Sticky Buddy regains that sticky factor.
You hear it time and time again: Communication is key to a successful relationship. But how can you ever get to that point if the person you’re seeing keeps sending you mixed signals? They tell you they need space, then text you all day long. They don’t want you to date other people, but they don’t want to be exclusive. They seem really into you, yet don’t prioritize time together. What gives? Mixed signals might as well be ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics when it comes to the energy it takes to decipher them. But once you get to the root of where the miscommunication is coming from, you can begin interpreting what mixed signals really mean for your relationship—and communicate in a way that makes you both feel heard and understood. To help you unpack mixed signals in your love life, HealthyWay sat down with Shirani Pathak, LCSW, a relationship counselor, holistic psychotherapist, and founder of theCenter for Soulful Relationships. Here, she shares how conflicting attachment styles might be to blame for crossed wires, why miscommunication might not always be a red flag, and examples of mixed signals you’re most likely to encounter when you date. Plus, she offers some effective communication strategies that can help you both say what you really mean—no shame or blame necessary.
What are mixed signals?
You’ve heard your girlfriends groan that they’re getting mixed signals from guys and girls they’re dating—and now you suspect you’re experiencing them yourself. What are mixed signals? “Mixed signals are when someone’s being inconsistent in the messages they’re giving people,” Pathak explains. Mixed signals can simply be miscommunication—your partner tries to express one set of feelings, and it comes out wrong. They can also be intentional, like the dude who’s keeping you on the back burner while he waits to see if someone “better” comes along. But no matter the reason for the mixed signals, they definitely add a new layer of stress and frustration to dating. “Mixed signals make us feel crazy. We wonder if we’re reading the relationship properly, whether or not this person even has interest in us. It can make you feel like you have no idea what’s going on in a situation and can trigger insecurity in people when mixed messages are coming through,” she says. [pullquote align=’center’]“Mixed signals are when someone’s being inconsistent in the messages they’re giving people.” —Shirani Pathak, LCSW[/pullquote] Sending and receiving mixed signals can occur at any point in a relationship, whether you’ve known the person for 10 days or 10 years. That being said, messy communication like this tends to be more prevalent early in relationships. That’s when we’re still getting to know each other and are often too vulnerable to be who we really are. “It usually happens early on. Online dating has absolutely made mixed signals even more common because there are just so many more options [of people to date] out there. People are constantly on the search for someone better,” says Pathak. No matter when or where mixed signals happen, they can be equal parts confusing and frustrating—especially if you really like the person. But your partner’s behavior is in no way a reflection of who you are. At your wit’s end with mixed signals? Don’t blame yourself.
The Psychology Behind Mixed Signals
Most people don’t get into a relationship in an attempt to mislead their partner. And yet, poor communication between two people who like each other means they don’t always convey what they really mean. Why do people send mixed signals, despite intending to be open and honest? One of the biggest problems is that most of us haven’t quite learned how to say how we truly feel. It gets tied up in blame, doubts, and insecurities that then turn into mixed signals. We build walls in our relationships when we don’t express our true feelings. “We haven’t been taught how to communicate clearly, with love and kindness, about what we really want and need. It’s a skill set that needs to be cultivated,” says Pathak. On-screen communication catalyzes mixed signals as well. Without hearing a person’s voice or seeing their body language, it’s all too easy to misinterpret an otherwise neutral text message (like “I’m not sure what my plans are”) as something else entirely. He might be trying to let you down easy if he wants to decline a date…or he could simply be letting you know that his schedule really is up in the air and he doesn’t want to commit to something he might have to cancel down the road. It’s hard to decipher without those other clues. And in a world where instant communication is the norm, a delayed response to a text can be the loudest mixed signal of all. We interpret the radio silence as the person being uninterested, and it tends to spiral as we ruminate on what that potential lack of interest says about us. Was it something I said? Maybe he’s not into me anymore. Is she seeing someone else? Why doesn’t she like me? Or…maybe the person got distracted and forgot to text back. It happens!
Mixed Signals and Attachment Styles
All of these types of mixed signals really go back to something much deeper: our attachment style. We all have one. About half of us have a secure attachment style, meaning we strive for intimacy and comfort in relationships, while the other half is divided into two groups: the avoidant attachment style and the insecure attachment style. Those with the avoidant attachment style can get totally freaked out by close relationships and push partners away, while people who have the anxious attachment style crave closeness and tend to come off as a little clingy or overbearing. Those who fall into the avoidant or anxious attachment style categories tend to be the ones sending and receiving mixed signals. [pullquote align=’center’]Most of us haven’t quite learned how to say how we truly feel. It gets tied up in blame, doubts, and insecurities that then turn into mixed signals.[/pullquote] “People who have the anxious attachment style are really good at picking up when someone’s starting to distance themselves or when someone’s being inconsistent,” Pathak explains. “That oversensitivity can be a gift when cultivated, but it often comes out sideways [as] mixed signals.” “As for the avoidant type, they’re the ones constantly looking for someone better out of fear of true intimacy,” Pathak says. “Their mixed signals can lead you to feel like you’re not good enough and wear on your self-esteem.” There’s no good excuse for sending a mixed signal. But understanding where it’s coming from can help you interpret it, find the right response, and figure out the healthiest way to move forward.
Common Mixed Signals (and How to Interpret Them)
Communication is rarely perfectly clear in a new relationship—you’re haven’t quite learned the inner workings of the other person’s personality. But how do you deal with mixed signals when they come up? Here are some common examples of mixed signals, along with what they might mean.
1. Going Hot and Cold
Everything’s perfect when you go out together: You’re laughing, having deep conversations, and generally enjoying each other’s company. But the next day, they’re completely distant. You try to invite them out again, but all you get is wishy-washy responses—talk about mixed signals! Why can’t they just decide if they like you, once and for all? What it means: They might be intentionally keeping their options open, or their avoidant attachment style is causing them to pull away. Either way, there’s clearly a barrier to bonding with this person. It’s caused by an inability for them to say what they might really mean, like “I’m still figuring out if this is going to be a fit, and we should keep our options open.”
2. Not Trying to Impress You Anymore
When you first started dating, she dolled herself up for every date, right down to the high heels. You loved seeing her across the table from you, looking her very best. But now that the relationship is settled into a rhythm, it seems like she’s stopped putting in effort. She has swapped her heels for sneakers, her dresses for jeans and a nice top. Instead of asking you out to dinner, she assumes Netflix and takeout for the fifth weekend in a row sounds good. Her casual appearance and too-chill attitude might feel like a mixed signal itself—what happened to the woman I was dating? What it means: She probably didn’t show up as her most authentic self when you first started dating. She thought she needed to be glammed up to get you to like her. “We think we have to give off a certain persona in order to be attractive to people,” says Pathak. Now that she feels comfortable with you and confident you like her, she feels like she can finally be who she really is—and that might be a jeans-and-tee, on-the-couch-homebody kind of girl. It’s naturally confusing to watch someone’s style do a 180, but it doesn’t necessarily mean she has stopped caring about impressing you and putting effort into the relationship.
3. Mismatched Sex Drives
Your partner told you he loves getting it on all that time. And you’re super into that. But it just doesn’t seem to be happening all that frequently in reality. It feels like a rejection—but is it? What it means: “Lots of people get upset when their partner’s not as kinky as they thought they were,” says Pathak. Confusion in the bedroom can be interpreted all sorts of ways. He might feel like you are having sex a lot, and you’ve just got different interpretations of what “a lot” means. He might be stressed out about stuff that has nothing to do with you. Or you both might need to express what does and doesn’t turn you on and make a few tweaks next time you get intimate.
Avoiding Mixed Signals
Mixed signals are just one symptom of a larger issue: an inability to communicate effectively. This is an issue for both sides of the relationship—the sender of the mixed signals and the receiver. Learning to communicate in a kind, loving, authentic, and direct way can help you get to the bottom of just about any mixed signal. Here are some relationship therapist–approved communication tips for decoding mixed signals:
Show up as your true self.
The best way to avoid misinterpretations is to exude authenticity. Don’t change who you are just to impress a person you’re going out with. Instead, be genuine in how you look and behave starting from day one of any relationship. “When you give off mixed messages about who you are, you’re going to receive mixed messages. Showing up as the best version of you, and not who someone else wants you to be, will help cut down on mixed messages,” says Pathak.
Approach mixed signals with open curiosity.
It’s really easy to fall into the trap of blaming ourselves when we feel rejected by someone or confused about a relationship. Shift that self-blame into genuine curiosity for your partner as you try to figure out what’s really going on.
Start the dialogue with “I” statements.
The only thing you can ever be sure of in a relationship is how you feel. Using statements that start with “I,” rather than “you,” focuses the dialogue on something that’s true for you, hopefully without putting your partner in defense mode.
[pullquote align=”center”]Mixed signals are just one symptom of a larger issue: an inability to communicate effectively.[/pullquote] “Pause and check in with yourself and what you’re noticing. It’s okay to say ‘I’m feeling insecure and I’m feeling like I’m getting mixed messages from you.’ Taking ownership of your own feelings can help you more clearly communicate with someone in a relationship,” says Pathak.
Avoid shame and blame.
Conversations about mixed messages can be tense, but shaming and blaming your partner is the fastest way to get them to shut down completely. Aim to stay neutral in your language in as self-assured a way as possible.
Know when it’s time to move on.
If you can’t find common ground in your communication, it might be time to move on. And that’s okay—it has nothing to do with your worth as a partner. It just means the relationship wasn’t the right one for you. “No matter what happens in a relationship, always remember you are lovable and valuable,” says Pathak. “You are worthy of affection, regardless of a pattern in giving and receiving mixed messages.”
It seems like every day there’s a new theory about the healthiest way to eat carbs. Some food philosophies shun them entirely, while others offer a prescription for the best carbohydrates to consume. The latest craze, carb cycling, takes a slightly different approach to this important macronutrient: Cutting back on carbohydrates some days and indulging in your favorite carb-laden foods at other times. Carb cycling is an approach that’s a lot more balanced than some diets, but it requires you to pay closer attention to how much you’re eating at certain times throughout the week or month. The payoff might be worth it: Followers of carb cycling say the diet helps them burn fat, lose weight, and hit fitness goals—all without giving up the foods they love. Wondering if carb cycling is the right eating plan for you? Read on to learn how carb cycling works, why it’s important to balance your carbohydrate intake with other macronutrients, and the best ways to get started.
What is carb cycling?
There are probably as many theories about effective carb intake as there are carbohydrate sources in the world. But when it comes to figuring out exactly what these diet plans entail, there seem to be conflicting definitions. So, let’s level set: What is carb cycling? “Carb cycling is basically eating higher amounts of carbohydrates on some days and lower carbohydrates other days,” explainsAmy Goodson, a registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in sports dietetics. “Many people use carb cycling to maximize their fitness, performance, weight loss, and body composition goals.” The concept of carb cycling is fairly easy to grasp: Days with heavy training should be fueled by higher amounts of carbohydrates, whereas you’re supposed to cut back on carbohydrate intake during periods of low physical activity. But things start to get less clear once you try to nail down the specifics. How many carbs should you be eating? And how do you decide when to alternate between high- and low-carb days?
[pullquote align=”center”]“Carb cycling can work if you do it very carefully, but most people should be working with a registered dietitian to dial in on what they need.”[/pullquote] Experts agree that the specifics of carb cycling will depend on your lifestyle and the goals you’re striving to achieve. Carb cycling has been traditionally used by professional athletes to help their bodies reach peak performance and appearance ahead of a competition. (So that’s how people drop that last bit of weight before stepping in front of the cameras and commentators!) It’s generally effective at helping people burn fat while maintaining their muscle mass and strength. How carb cycling fits into your exercise routine and eating habits will vary, but there are some guidelines you can use to start carb cycling. Celebrity fitness and nutrition expertJJ Virgin, author of The Sugar Impact Diet, makes the following recommendations for carbohydrate intake.
On High-Carb Days:
Eat 80 to 100 grams of clean, lean protein.
Eat 150 to 175 grams of slow, low carbs.
Eat 25 grams of healthy fats.
On Low-Carb Days:
Eat 80 to 100 grams of clean, lean protein.
Eat around 50 grams of slow, low carbs.
Eat 40 to 50 grams of healthy fats.
Even if you’re not actively training for a marathon or competing in a bikini in front of hundreds of people, carb cycling can still be a worthwhile approach to managing your weight and feeling well. The overall goal of this eating philosophy is to give your body the right amount of energy you need to power your days—whether you’re doing back-to-back HIIT classes or binge-watchingReal Housewives on a Sunday afternoon. (Hey, we don’t judge.)
Does carb cycling actually work?
The theory behind carb cycling makes total sense—you eat fewer energy-inducing foods when you’re at rest and more carbohydrates when you know you’ll be more physically active. But how exactly does carb cycling work? It has to do with the glycogen, or the storage of sugar from carbs used for energy, in the tissues of your body. “When you eat fewer carbs, your body turns to stored fat for fuel,” explains Virgin. “Decreasing your carb intake on low-carb days keeps your insulin levels low, which leads to fat burning. High insulin levels send the signal to your body to store fat and lock your fat-burning doors.” With that being said, scientific research on carb cycling diets is extremely limited, so results may vary. It’s always best to work with a health professional when starting a new diet to increase the chances of success and reduce potential dangers. “Carb cycling can work if you do it very carefully, but most people should be working with a registered dietitian to dial in on what they need. If you don’t eat enough carbs, you can experience fatigue and likely not get as much out of your workouts,” warns Goodson.
The Pros and Cons of Carb Cycling
No diet can be classified as completely “good” or “bad.” It all goes back to what works given our own individual circumstances. That being said, there are some clear upsides and downsides to carb cycling.
Pros of Carb Cycling
Carb cycling is accessible and convenient for most people. “One advantage of carb cycling is that it can be less restrictive than low-carb diet plans because it allows folks to consume a higher amount of healthy carbs on certain days,” says Virgin. Carb cycling is flexible, and you can adjust it based on whatever’s going on in your life at a given time. For example, if you have an active social life, you can make your busiest days less restrictive for carb intake. (Go ahead, enjoy those bar snacks at happy hour, sans guilt!) You don’t have to cut out your favorite foods. Is a big spaghetti dinner a Sunday tradition in your family? That can totally fit into your carb cycling meal plan.
Cons of Carb Cycling
You have to be disciplined when carb cycling. “It requires some planning and tracking of macronutrients [like healthy fats and protein intake], so it may not work for everyone,” says Virgin. This can be tricky for nutrition novices, and you might experience a learning curve. You might not feel great on low-carb days. “Many people experience fatigue, headaches, and a lack of energy,” says Goodson. You might not get enough nutrients. “If you take out lots of grains and fruits when carb cycling, you also take out lots of fiber and nutrients in the diet. While it may provoke a weight-loss response, it’s harder to maintain for most people in the long term,” warns Goodson.
Should you try carb cycling?
Carb cycling used to be reserved for bodybuilders and other high-performance athletes, but it’s since made its way into the mainstream. How do you know if carb cycling is right for you? First, consider your overall health. Carb cycling might not be a viable option for people with certain conditions, says Goodson. “People who have blood sugar issues, like diabetes or hypoglycemia, should definitely be working with a registered dietitian if pursuing a low-carb or carb cycling diet. If you have other health conditions, you should definitely talk to your doctor before considering,” she says. Also, combining carb cycling with other eating plans, like the ketogenic diet, might not be effective or healthy, even though it can get you through those low-carb days. “True keto diets mean you are in ketosis, which comes from eating next to no carbs and moderate protein. So if you are cycling in higher carb days, you really aren’t eating a keto diet and likely are not in ketosis,” explains Goodson.
Who will see the most benefits from carb cycling?
Overall, carb cycling tends to be a more accessible diet with ample opportunities to consume enough nutrients, but it works better for certain types of people.
[pullquote align=”center”]“Focus on slow, low carbs. Slow means they’re absorbed slowly, which helps with digestion and fat burning. Low means they’re low glycemic and don’t cause inflammation-inducing spikes in blood glucose or insulin.”[/pullquote] “The people who are most likely to have most success when carb cycling are athletes who participate in endurance training, high-intensity interval training, and weightlifting. Your body relies on glucose and glycogen from carbs for the majority of high-intensity exercise and for about 40 percent of light-moderate endurance exercise,” says Virgin, who recommends using carb cycling only as a short-term diet. A healthcare professional can help you evaluate whether you’re a good candidate for carb cycling.
Carb Cycling Tips for Beginners
So you’ve decided you want to give carb cycling a try. How do you get started? First, start figuring out what your carbohydrate intake will look like each week. Choose a day to go high-carb, and then set up a pattern of carb intake around that day. Here are some combinations that Virgin suggests trying.
If you’re new to carb cycling:
Low–High–High–Low–High–High
If you’re looking for faster results:
Low–Low–High–Low–Low–High Acarb cycling calculator can help give you more personalized recommendations about balancing macronutrients, but you should strive to eat what makes you feel your best. Finally, start building your carb cycling meal plan. In general, each meal should include some protein and fat and lots of whole foods. Choose your carbohydrates carefully, says Virgin. “Not all carbs are created equal,” she says. “Focus on slow, low carbs. Slow means they’re absorbed slowly, which helps with digestion and fat burning. Low means they’re low glycemic and don’t cause inflammation-inducing spikes in blood glucose or insulin.” Another added benefit of low carbs (such as oatmeal and lentils) is their fiber content, Virgin adds. “Fiber slows down stomach emptying and takes longer to move through our digestive tract, helping you feel full. In addition, fiber has a host of health benefits from helping you maintain healthy cholesterol levels and manage blood sugar levels to strengthening your gut microbiome and sparking weight loss.” Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t worry—there are tons of recipes and ideas out there you can use for inspiration. Alisha Temples, a licensed nutritionist atFueled & Fed Nutrition, has put together a carb cycling meal plan to help you get started:
Carb Cycling Meal Plan for a Low-Carb Day
Breakfast:
Eggs with avocado and salsa + a cup of coffee
Lunch:
Tuna salad + a side of green beans with almonds
Dinner:
Chicken breast + cauliflower rice + roasted broccoli
Chicken breast + a baked potato + asparagus Everyone has a slightly different approach to carb cycling. Take these guidelines and adjust them based on your body composition, activity level, and food preferences. And when in doubt, make an appointment with a registered dietitian or your doctor to make sure your whatever dietary approach you’re taking is the right one for you.
Who can resist indulging in their favorite greasy, guilty pleasures at the state fair or a fiery curry dinner that’s loaded with spicy veggies? Foods like these taste amazing going down, but they don’t always feel so great when your body starts processing them. Your stomach might feel uncomfortably full (even if the meal wasn’t huge), you might experience some blush-inducing gas, or you might have a burning sensation. It’s called indigestion, and it shows up in a variety of ways. But what causes indigestion? “Indigestion is really interesting because it covers a lot of real estate in the digestive system,” explains Will Bulsiewicz, MD, the board-certified practicing gastroenterologist behind the popular gut health Instagram account @theguthealthmd. “Lots of different things can cause indigestion, and even the way you choose to define it can vary quite a bit.” Indigestion certainly isn’t comfortable, but you’re not alone in the experience: Roughly 1 in 4 Americans experience indigestion every year, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Here’s what you need to know about this all-too-common experience, from what causes indigestion, symptoms to watch out for, treatment options for uncomfortable digestion, and when to see a doctor.
What is indigestion?
You’ve heard the term countless times, and you might even be experiencing it yourself. But what exactly is indigestion? “Indigestion is a really broad term,” says Bulsiewicz. “In general, I describe it as a feeling of discomfort after you consume food.” While indigestion symptoms can vary from person to person, they often include pain in the abdomen, dull burning in the chest, feeling overly full, nausea, gas, and/or bloating. It’s one of those you-know-it-when-you-have-it conditions. However, keep in mind that indigestion itself isn’t a disease. Also known as dyspepsia, indigestion is a symptom of something else. This is why it’s important to identify the root of your discomfort so you can find the right treatment options for you.
What foods cause indigestion?
You might notice that every time you eat a specific kind of food, like citrus fruits or a spicy tuna roll (extra wasabi, please!), you experience digestion that’s, ahem, less than pleasant. It’s not surprising, though—certain foods and even some drinks are known to trigger uncomfortable symptoms in some people. “Spicy foods and acidic foods, such as tomato sauce, classically make indigestion worse because they increase the acidity in the stomach,” says Bulsiewicz. If you experience symptoms of indigestion after a spicy meal every once in a while, it’s probably not cause for major concern. “Everyone is prone to overdoing it on food at times. You could be a perfectly healthy person, go to Mexican a restaurant and have too many jalapeños and maybe not feel well afterward. That could be the source of your indigestion,” says Bulsiewicz. However, chronic indigestion after meals might indicate that foods are aggravating an underlying health issue. “If you have certain conditions that worsen when you have increased acidity, you’ll have an intensification of pain after you eat anything acidic,” explains Bulsiewicz. “There’s a point at which it crosses the line from sporadic to something you can reproduce. For example, I could drink orange juice all day long and be fine, but there are people with symptoms that flare up after just one glass.” Keep track of when you feel indigestion, and work with your doctor to determine whether a more serious health concern should be addressed.
[pullquote align=”center”]Indigestion isn’t a disease, it’s a symptom of something else. For a portion of people who experience indigestion, that something else might be a health condition that needs medical attention.[/pullquote]
Another potential cause of indigestion could be how you’re eating. In today’s fast-paced world, who isn’t scarfing down big meals at lightning speed? Your dining behaviors not only limit how much you enjoy the food you’re eating, they also might be what’s causing your post-meal abdominal pain. (Talk about #saddesklunch!) Wolfing down food too quickly, laughing a lot while you’re eating, drinking through a straw, and consuming carbonated beverages can cause you to actually swallow air (a condition known as aerophagia), says Bulsiewicz. And that air needs to come out—somehow, some way. “The air is either going to be belched out or wiggle through your intestines and come out your bottom,” says Bulsiewicz. The way your body processes and releases the air can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, including abdominal pain, bloating, and other indigestion symptoms. Consider this just one more reason to support the worldwide movement to ban plastic straws—and additional motivation to kick your diet soda habit.
Certain health conditions can cause indigestion.
Remember: Indigestion isn’t a disease, it’s a symptom of something else. For a portion of people who experience indigestion, that something else might be a health condition that needs medical attention. “When people think about indigestion, the first thing that comes to mind for both patients and doctors is the question of an ulcer,” says Bulsiewicz. “But it takes a lot of skill on the part of the doctor to peel back the layers to figure out what might really be causing someone’s indigestion.” Health issues in the stomach may be to blame for your indigestion. The doctor may check to see if you have a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection or gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining). Your physician may determine you have functional dyspepsia (stomach pain that’s not related to an ulcer). “Another fairly common cause of indigestion is constipation,” he says. “It can cause abdominal discomfort and pain, nausea, gas, and bloating.” Sometimes your indigestion might not be rooted in stomach or intestinal issues at all. Instead, another organ might be causing the discomfort you feel after mealtimes. “If your gallbladder isn’t functioning properly, it could give you discomfort in your upper abdomen, which many people think is their stomach,” says Bulsiewicz. “Indigestion might also be a symptom of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. While commonly seen in people with a history of alcohol abuse, this condition also occurs in people with type 2 diabetes and people who are aging. You stop producing enough digestive juice in your pancreas, and that can cause pain.” Finally, indigestion is also a common complaint among pregnant women. “There’s no one cause for indigestion during pregnancy,” explains Bulsiewicz. “Altered hormones, the baby and uterus pushing up on the stomach, and relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter can all contribute to these symptoms.” So, how can you figure out what causes indigestion in your body? Start by tracking your indigestion (what time of day it occurs, what you ate right before) so you can learn what’s triggering it, and see your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
Diagnosing What Causes Indigestion
Infrequent cases of fleeting indigestion are generally not something to be alarmed about (even though getting through it is no picnic!). But when does this problem move beyond uncomfortable annoyance and into the realm of serious health concern? Bulsiewicz recommends watching out for the following conditions:
Your indigestion becomes a chronic, recurrent problem
It goes on for more than a few weeks
Your indigestion intensifies or becomes more painful
You start losing weight
You feel fatigued, weak, or lightheaded
You see blood in your vomit or stool
“All of those would be reasons to get your indigestion checked out by a doctor,” he says. Your physician may use an upper endoscopy to start looking for clues as to what’s causing your uncomfortable digestion. “It’s the single most powerful [tool] we have to diagnose this symptom, but it doesn’t provide all of the answers,” says Bulsiewicz. Depending on what the doctor finds with the upper endoscopy, you may have a diagnosis relatively quickly. Otherwise, you may need to undergo additional procedures, such as a blood test, to figure out what’s going on. Finding the cause of indigestion isn’t always easy, but as soon as you have the right diagnosis, you can work on starting the proper treatment—and ultimately finding relief.
What’s the best treatment for indigestion?
First, you need to determine if it’s just a random case of indigestion (which everyone gets from time to time) or it’s related to a more severe health issue. If it’s the former, popping a couple of Tums might do the trick. “Tums are great when you have symptoms and you want to get rid of them,” says Bulsiewicz. “It won’t prevent symptoms or heal an underlying cause, but it’s a fine option to use as needed.” Stronger indigestion medication might be necessary if you’re experiencing more frequent symptoms. Prilosec, Pepcid, and Zantac are all potential options for relieving the discomfort of indigestion, says Bulsiewicz. “Pick up an acid-reducing medicine over the counter and do a trial for two weeks to see what happens,” he says. “I would not treat yourself at home for more than two weeks.” If the problem is still occurring after a couple of weeks, or your symptoms worsen, it’s time to get checked out by a doctor. Remember: If you occasionally experience discomfort after eating, you probably don’t have a more serious underlying condition. If your indigestion is frequent, though, or if you start feeling worse, it could be related to something beyond eating one-too-many jalapeños. If you think your indigestion may be indicative of a more serious issue, see a doctor right away to pinpoint the problem and get on the road to feeling better.
Ever feel that urge to get out of town, like, now? Anyone who’s been bitten by the travel bug (or regularly craves a change of scenery) has felt the intense need to take a last-minute trip. But between choosing a destination, booking flights and hotels, and figuring out what you’ll do when you actually get there, it can sometimes take months to plan a vacation. Wondering how you can plan all of that in a day? Stay calm—last-minute trips can be every bit as invigorating as vacations you’ve planned in advance, and they definitely don’t have to stress you out. There’s a certain art to pulling together a last-minute trip, though. You’ve got to have a sense of which destinations work best for spontaneous adventures, what types of activities you can do spur-of-the-moment, and where to book affordable flights and hotels just days before you go. Once your bases are covered, all that’s left is figuring out what to bring. (But don’t worry, we’ve got a packing list that can help!) Here are some tips on booking a last-minute trip, so you can embrace your spontaneity, sans stress.
Rethinking Your Approach to Vacation
Think about the last time you booked a major vacation. You probably came up with a specific experience in a specific destination (road-tripping the California coastline! wine-tasting throughout Burgundy! swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas!) and made it happen. Cheers to you for crossing those must-have experiences off your travel bucket list. But for a last-minute trip, you’ll need to be a lot more flexible. Think more broadly about the type of experience you’d like to have, such as a tropical beach getaway, couple’s retreat in the mountains, or outdoor adventure with the entire family. Then, research a variety of potential destinations that offer those experiences to see which have the best bargains for a last-minute trip. Rarely is one type of experience confined to a specific destination (except maybe those swimming piggies).
“Most people that are planning last-minute trips just want to go somewhere, usually wherever’s the cheapest,” says Courtnie Nichols, a travel concierge and founder of TravelBash. “So I ask questions about what they might be looking for, like a health and wellness trip or a girlfriends’ getaway or romantic vacation, and offer them three ideas that fit that theme.” You might be dying to jet off to Waikiki this weekend, but unless you score the right deal on flights and hotels, a last-minute trip to Hawaii might be out of the question for your budget. Instead, think about why you wanted to go to Waikiki: Was it the glorious beaches? Luxe hotels? Animal attractions? Narrow down what drew you to that destination, then seek out places that offer a similar experience, such as the Caribbean. That will allow you to have the kind of last-minute trip you crave without draining your travel fund. And who knows—you might find you like the alternative destination even more than the spot you had originally dreamed of.
Where to Find Cheap, Last-Minute Airline Tickets
So you’ve picked your destination, and you’re ready to work out the details. How do you find cheap last-minute flights? You’ll need to be strategic…and a little bit lucky. First, learn which websites and apps tend to have the best last-minute flight deals. Kayak, SkyScanner, Google Flights, and Hopper are some of Nichols’ favorites to use for airline tickets. Then, find ways to outsmart the airlines. “Enable private browsing [such as incognito mode on Google Chrome] when you’re looking for flights for last-minute trips. Websites can track when you’re searching and they might raise the prices. Be smarter than the airlines,” says Nichols. The day and time you search for travel deals also matters when it comes to how much you’ll pay for a last-minute trip. Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays are the best time to book flights, says Nichols. “Don’t even ask why I’m sometimes looking at flights at 2 a.m. or 4 a.m., but any time after midnight, you can get good deals,” she explains, with a laugh. Another way to potentially find a bargain flight for a last-minute trip: Look for two one-way tickets as opposed to a round-trip booking. That trick doesn’t always work, but when it does, you can save big, says Nichols. Sometimes, third-party websites and blogs can clue you into cheap flight options that might inspire you to take a last-minute trip. Check out The Flight Deal, which posts about flights that go on sale to destinations around the world. (Last December, that site posted about a flight deal to Mexico City that lead to a spur-of-the-moment getaway with one of my besties.) If you’re on a tight budget for a last-minute trip, consider driving to a destination. It might be less expensive than booking flights for everyone in the family, and it’s always nice to have your own set of wheels when you’re on vacation.
Booking a Hotel Room for Last-Minute Travel
Now that you’ve figured out where you’re headed for your last-minute trip and how you’re getting there, it’s time to find a place to stay. Waiting until the last minute to book your hotel rooms can work out in your favor, says Nichols. “Everyone says book early, but what happens if you wait is that a lot of resorts and hotels look at their inventory, and if they have space, they send out last-minute hotel deals,” she says. The best way to find out about cheap last-minute hotel rooms is to sign up for loyalty programs at the major hotel and resort brands, such as Sandals, Hilton, and Hyatt, Nichols adds. The companies will serve their best offers right into your inbox.
Most travelers rely exclusively on the internet to make their bookings, but picking up the phone can give you access to travel deals that aren’t being distributed online. “Hotels and campgrounds often have last-minute cancellations,” says Bill Widmer, who runs The Wandering RV. “It’s often easy to call them to see if they have any openings. You’ll typically get a good deal if they do.” Conventional hotels aren’t the only places to stay, though. A number of alternative accommodations provide an array of choices (and price points!) for your home away from home, says Calvin Iverson, travel expert at TravelPirates. “If you find that all of the cheaper hotel rooms are already booked for the week you’re planning to travel, expand your search to other options like Airbnb and HomeAway,” he explains. “Glamping is also becoming more and more popular on these platforms, and it’s no wonder—it’s the perfect compromise for those who love the outdoors but don’t want to skimp on convenience.” You can also score deals on hotel rooms for a last-minute trip. But keep in mind: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Check reviews on TripAdvisor before booking accommodations at rock-bottom rates. (There might be a reason that “4-star” hotel has tons of rooms available at bargain prices on a holiday weekend!)
When to Use a Travel Agent
Websites and apps have made it easier than ever to make your own travel arrangements. But there are still some pretty compelling reasons to work with a travel agent, especially when you’re in the mood for a last-minute trip. And surprisingly, it won’t cost you much (if anything!). “A lot of travel agents don’t charge a fee—they make money on the back-end from the hotels they book for their clients,” says Nichols. Travel agents are in the know about trends and can give you last-minute trip ideas that never would have crossed your mind. They also have access to special prices on hotels and travel packages that aren’t published elsewhere. “I get travel deals in my inbox all the time that the public isn’t getting. When I see one that I think a client might like, I get in touch with them to see if they’re interested,” says Nichols. Relationships with hotels and resorts are at the heart of a travel agent’s business. They leverage those partnerships to ensure that clients are treated like royalty during their stay, which increases the value (but not the price!) of a last-minute trip. “Travel agents can get you extra perks and upgrades. Plus, they take the headache out of planning a last-minute trip,” adds Nichols. With the right travel agent, you can jet off on the trip of your dreams in just a few short days—within budget and without the stress.
Ready to Travel—At Any Time
Want to be able to indulge your inner adventurer and jump on any amazing travel deal you come across? (Who doesn’t?) Then you better have all your ducks in a row long before you try to plan a last-minute trip. And by ducks, we mean travel documents and related materials. “Your passport is the most important thing,” says Nichols. “I tell all clients, even if they’re cruising from a U.S. port and reentering in the U.S., that they better have a passport. You never know when the rules will change and politics will come into play.” Before jetting off to a new country, make sure that your passport isn’t expiring anytime soon. Many destinations require that you have at least six months left before it expires. And double check that you have plenty of blank pages available for stamps and visas. Anything can happen before or during a journey, especially on a last-minute trip. Travel insurance can help you troubleshoot major issues and reimburse some of your expenses, should you need to cancel reservations. Going abroad? Check if your health insurance policy will cover you if you get sick or injured in another country. When in doubt, consider investing in travel medical insurance ahead of a last-minute trip. Finally, a travel-focused credit card proves endlessly useful for people who love to be on the road. You’ll typically pay a hefty annual fee, but the card will give you access to helpful amenities, like rental car insurance, airport lounge passes, travel assistance, hotel room upgrades, money to reimburse you for expenses incurred during travel hiccups (like a lost bag), and tons more. Plus, travel credit cards generally allow you to make purchases around the world without paying foreign transaction fees (because why pay extra for those souvenirs?).
Making the Most of Your Last-Minute Trip
When it comes to last-minute trips, you might have only had time to book a flight and a hotel room before leaving town. How are you going to fill your days once you get to the destination? “You can plan almost all the activities you want to do on a last-minute trip once you arrive,” says Nichols. “Depending on where you go, the hotel or resort will have a concierge or staff at the front desk who can give you a list of all the fun things to do.” Whether you want to have a candlelit dinner with a view, an exhilarating ATV adventure, a day of guided sightseeing, or recommendations on the best neighborhoods for a stroll, you can get all the info (and make the arrangements) at the hotel.
On a last-minute trip, you might not be able to score tickets to the hottest show in town (sorry, Hamilton fans) or reservations at the best restaurant during peak dinner hours, but there will always be fun things to do. Don’t be afraid to ask locals and other travelers for recommendations, says Nichols. “I was in Puerto Rico talking to locals, and they told me about an amazing jazz place. They can also tell you about activities and where the best bars are,” she adds. A wide-open schedule is a beautiful thing on a last-minute trip. Relish in the things you love most, whether that’s adrenaline-fueled activities, deep-dives into foreign culture, or just lounging on the beach. And even if you don’t do everything on your list, there’s no need for FOMO—just start planning your next vacation!
There’s nothing quite like jumping on a plane with everything you need in a bag and getting ready for some solo travel. For me, solo travel is pure therapy: Eating alone can help you savor every bite; navigating foreign cities without a friend builds your confidence; and spending your days exactly as you want (whether that’s museum-hopping, exploring markets, or lounging on the beach) gives you the headspace you might be lacking at home—plus plenty of time to indulge in what matters to you most. But the best experiences seeing the world on your own completely depend on choosing the right destination. While no two spots are alike, the best solo travel destinations share some similar characteristics: They have welcoming locals, spectacular scenery, opportunities to make friends, and unique activities you can do on your own. (Bonus points for hotels that are as chic as they are cozy!) Wondering where to go on your big adventure? Here are some of my favorite solo travel destinations, along with a bunch of places other women jetsetters have fallen in love with as well. Warning: This list will trigger some serious wanderlust.
The Best Solo Travel Destination for Amateur Archeologists: Malta
This small island nation, tucked just beneath Sicily, is a playground for wanderers. From secret swimming coves and top-notch diving that will make you feel like a mermaid to some of the world’s oldest (and best preserved) archeological sites to walking trails on the edges of stunning cliffs, Malta has tons to explore on your own.
Crime rates are low, most residents speak English, and public transportation is cheap, safe, and efficient, making this an excellent solo travel destination for women (especially first-time jetsetters!). Make the capital, Valletta, your base for exploring Malta and its sister island, Gozo. Then, spend a week (or more) uncovering the many secrets of the natural and ancient worlds in this off-the-beaten-path solo travel destination. Where to stay:Ursulino hotel in Valletta makes for an artsy home away from home with comfy duplex suites and a staff that goes out of their way to make guests feel welcome.
The Best Solo Travel Destination for Culture Buffs: Istanbul, Turkey
Architecture, religions, and foods converge in Istanbul, making it a melting pot of cultural goodness (and a pretty rad solo travel destination).
[related article_ids=1003279] Mornings start with the Muslim call to prayer, echoing from minarets in the Old City, and a small (but mighty) cup of velvety Turkish coffee. Spend your days wandering through Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, and underground treasures (the Basilica Cistern looks like a movie set!). In the evening, dig into big plates of piping-hot falafel at outdoor restaurants and try out trendy cocktail bars.
No solo travel adventure to Istanbul would be complete without a visit to a local hamam (a spa focused on bathing treatments). While I felt completely safe in the city a few years ago, the political situation in Istanbul has been changing rapidly. Keep an eye on the recommendations from the U.S. Department of State before visiting Turkey(or any country!). Where to stay: Solo travel accommodations don’t get better than Marmara Guesthouse with its cozy, affordable beds, a centralized location, and rooftop breakfasts you’ll never forget.
The Best Solo Travel Destination for Island Hopping: Indonesia
If your dreams of a solo travel adventure include hopping around islands, lounging on beaches, climbing volcanoes, and wandering around dreamy rice paddies, you’ve got to book a flight to Indonesia. Bali’s a great place to start—the island has tons of tasty, healthy food, spa treatments galore, and beautiful temples. But bring your sense of adventure to this top solo travel destination and go beyond the typical tourist sites.
Central Java is the arts and music center of Indonesia (plus it’s home to Borbobudur, the epic ninth-century Buddhist temple), whereas Sumatra’s got an absolutely gorgeous crystal-clear lake and striking architecture; meanwhile, Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo) offers access to some of the most biologically diverse flora and fauna on Earth. No matter where your journey takes you, the genuine warmth and friendless of the locals makes the experience so much richer. Where to stay: Yogi Beach Bungalows offers tiny, private houses right on the beach on the quiet island of Nusa Lembongan for $20-30 a night—you can’t beat it.
The Best Solo Travel Destination for Feeling like Royalty: Portugal
Portugal’s a solo travel destination that’s been plucked straight from a storybook—just look at the vibrantly-hued castles of Sintra. But it’s more than just palaces and royal splendor. Portugal also has some crazy fun cities that leave visitors spoiled for choice of things to do on their own.
“Lisbon and Porto are very budget-friendly, the architecture is stunning, and the food is delicious,” says Namrata Bhawnani, co-founder of green travel and living website Ecophiles. “Both cities have bars and cafes with tons of character, plus the port wine cellars in Porto are hard to resist. The sunset in Lisbon is memorable—and free!” Where to stay: Sleep surrounded by local art at the In Porto Gallery Guesthouse.
The Best Solo Travel Destination for Day Tripping in Europe: Geneva, Switzerland
With world-class concerts, beautifully designed parks, free museums, and lush botanical gardens, Geneva is a prime solo travel destination in its own right. But it also makes a great jumping off point for day trips throughout Switzerland and France, says Tatyana Rodriguez, who lived and traveled there for a year as an au pair.
[related article_ids=1002621] “You can take the train to the old French town of Yvoire, which has a beautiful five senses garden, or to Gruyères, which is perfect for sci-fi lovers and has a museum dedicated to surrealist artist H.R. Giger,” she says. “From Geneva, you can also drive to Montreux [in Switzerland] to see the place that inspired Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein, or even take the bus to Annecy, France, which is nicknamed the Venice of the Alps.” Where to stay: The boutique hotel La Cour des Augustins has converted two mid-19th century buildings into a modern sanctuary.
The Best Solo Travel Destination for Winter Travel: Québec City, Canada
After traveling to 68 countries and all 50 U.S. states, Elizabeth Avery, founder of Solo Trekker 4 U, has finally found her favorite solo travel destination: Québec City, Canada. “It’s a friendly, down-to-earth place where eating alone in a restaurant doesn’t feel awkward,” she says. “It also gives you the feel of France for a much lower cost.” While summer might be prime travel season, winter is actually one of the best times to visit Québec City. Avery recommends skiing, taking a dog sledding tour, ice skating, or even trying out a traditional toboggan, where you’ll zoom down an ice slide at over 40 miles per hour. After all that activity, indulge in some self-care at one of the city’s popular spas and indoor swimming spots. Where to stay: Make yourself at home at the quaint Auberge Place d’Armes, a charming boutique inn in the heart of Old Québec.
The Best Solo Travel Destination to Start Backpacking in Africa: Ethiopia
Africa might not be the first continent that comes to mind for the best solo travel destinations, but Valerie Bowden, the brains behind Backpacking Africa for Beginners, says it’s safe and welcoming to visitors.
She recommends getting your feet wet in Ethiopia. “Ethiopia is safe, and as heartwarming as it is quirky,” she says. While development limitations mean electricity and wifi aren’t entirely reliable at this solo travel destination, the break from modern amenities gives you a chance to dive even deeper into the culture, says Bowden. “You can’t leave without experiencing a traditional coffee ceremony. And make sure you travel to the rock churches in Lalibela and the Danakil Depression, which will blow your mind,” she adds. Where to stay: Mr. Martins Cozy Place makes it easy to travel solo on a budget in Addis Ababa, says Bowden.
The Best Solo Travel Destination to Get Wowed by Nature: Iceland
Once you visit Iceland, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for the wonders of the environment. It seems there’s a spectacular new sight around every corner. “There are massive waterfalls, beautiful scenery, black sand beaches, natural thermal pools, the Blue Lagoon, glaciers, national parks, and Reykjavík—a great city to explore by foot,” says Danielle Spindle, travel blogger at Nurse to Nomad. “If you’re lucky, you can stare in awe at the Northern Lights.”
Iceland also has a thriving solo travel scene. Things can be pricey, so people are eager to save on costs by doing things as a group. “Iceland has fantastic, safe hostels, so it’s not difficult to meet others if you prefer to socialize while traveling alone. And it’s safe—I never felt uneasy, never worried about my purse, and everyone was really kind,” says Spindle. Where to stay: Try the Oddsson, a chic hostel with comfortable, private rooms, gorgeous views of the water, and yoga classes.
The Best Solo Travel Destination for City Slickers: Tokyo, Japan
Hands down, Tokyo might just be one of the best solo travel destinations in the world for women. Its low crime rates pop it at the top of the Safe Cities Index, Japan’s well known for its hospitality, and it’s extraordinarily easy to navigate, says Amelia Heldt, blogger at The Beat of Adventure. The ample array of things to do will keep you busy for your entire trip.
“[Even] if your hostel isn’t pumping with potential new friends, you won’t be bored. Japan is a nation that mixes the beauty and tradition of the past with the convenience and advancements of the future. There are all kinds of museums, amazing food, sake, stunning nature, cutting-edge fashion, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, bullet trains, the Tokyo Disney Resort, and Blade Runner-esque looking cities. Did I mention the sake?” she says. “Japan continually surprises and delights even the most hard-to-please travelers.” Where to stay: Claska has peaceful-looking rooms that offer plenty of serenity from the bustling city.
The Best Solo Travel Destination You’ve Never Considered: Bosnia and Herzegovina
One thing that’s critical to any solo travel destination is a friendly community. When you’re so far from home and on your own, you want to feel welcome. Enter Bosnia and Herzegovina, a nation in southeastern Europe that declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1992.
[related article_ids=1003493] Hazel Joy, travel blogger at Arrivals Hall, fell in love with the country’s warm culture. “I experienced many random acts of kindness from the locals, a trait which also rubs off on visitors,” she says. “Despite its difficult recent history, it’s a very safe country for solo female travelers. It’s a country which seems to attract tourists who are culturally receptive and open to socializing outside of their group. It’s also very cheap to travel in.”
As for things to do, plan to spend ample time exploring the capital, Sarajevo, as well as the Old Bridge Area of Mostar, a historic town that’s earned recognition from UNESCO. “Other places of note are the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial in eastern Bosnia and the pilgrimage town of Medjugorje. Given Bosnia and Herzegovina’s mountainous terrain, hiking and rafting are popular outdoor activities,” she says. Where to stay: “The cream of Bosnian society hangs out at the Hotel Europe,” says Joy. “I met the mayor of Sarajevo there!”
The Best Solo Travel Destination in the United States: Maui, Hawaii
Not all solo travel destinations are outside of America! If you’re looking for a great spot to go stateside, consider hopping on a plane to Maui, says Kristin Addis, CEO at Be My Travel Muse.
“I traveled solo to Maui a year ago, and it was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken. It was so easy to meet people on snorkeling trips, just hanging out in cafes, or on the beach. People were friendly, and even though I feared I’d be surrounded by couples, there were plenty of interesting locals to talk to,” she says. “I also drove the Road to Hana solo,” she says, “which was fantastic because I could stay at each place for just as long as I wanted and do it all on my own clock and terms.” Where to stay: Addis recommends the Grand Wailea, not only for its beautiful grounds, but also for its onsite restaurant, Humu Humu.
The Best Solo Travel Destination to Kick Off a South American Adventure: Colombia
The country once best known for Pablo Escobar’s drug-fueled escapades has developed into one of the world’s best travel destinations, solo or not. Its breathtaking Caribbean coastline woos beach lovers, while its colorful cities immerse globetrotters in the local culture.
Kaiki Hüppe, a German woman who’s been traveling throughout South America, says it’s her favorite spot on the continent. “I definitely recommend going to Medellín, it’s my favorite city so far in my travels. It’s got incredible history, an interesting free city walking tour, and a fun, safe party scene,” she says. “A day trip to Guatapé, an Andean resort town, is super nice, as well as a visit to the old colonial town of Cartagena.” Where to stay: Los Patios has a cool atmosphere with an even cooler rooftop bar. If these incredible solo travel destinations have you teeming with wanderlust, there’s only one thing left to do: Book a flight! And don’t forget to send us a postcard.
Do you ever feel like you’re glowing from the inside out after you exercise? You may credit those “feel-good” hormones, known as endorphins, for the positive vibes. But endorphins aren’t the only reason we feel amazing after a sweaty gym or studio session. There are other mental health benefits of exercise that help us feel good long after we hop off the elliptical. “I often ‘prescribe’ exercise to my clients,” says Allison Gervais, a licensed psychotherapist atMarin Mental Wellness in San Francisco. “I’ve found for the vast majority of my clients who incorporate some type of exercise into their weekly schedule that it can help lift a lot of mental health disorders.” While a desire to stay in shape and look our best can motivate us to hit the gym, the biggest payoff to moving our bodies might just be the psychological benefits. Regularly getting our heart rates up and challenging our muscles helps us become happier, more resilient, and less stressed-out individuals. Here are some of the most compelling mental health benefits of exercise that make every sweat sesh worth it, no matter how much motivation you need to summon to get moving.
1. Treat and Prevent Depression.
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health issues in the United States. While mental health professionals have long relied on antidepressants, talk therapy, or a combination of approaches to treat this disorder, they’ve started adding another option to their toolkits: exercise. [pullquote align=”center”]“Exercise isn’t a substitute for antidepressants, but for someone with mild depression, exercise can help lift it.” —Allison Gervais, LMFT[/pullquote] Science shows that one of the mental health benefits of exercise is its ability to help people cope with and eventually overcome depression. Onestudy found that engaging in aerobic exercise three to five times a week was an effective treatment for people with mild to moderate depression. “Exercise isn’t a substitute for antidepressants, but for someone with mild depression, exercise can help lift it,” says Gervais. Not only does physical activity seem to be a valid treatment for depression, but one of the other mental health benefits of exercise is its ability to prevent this mood disorder. Researchers who tracked nearly 34,000 adults over the course of 11 years discovered that those who didn’t exercise weremore likely to experience depression compared with participants who did any physical activity of any level of intensity for just an hour a week. Anotherstudy that followed 11,000 people for up to 50 years found that people who were active in their adult years experienced fewer [linkbuilder id=”6798″ text=”symptoms of depression”] than those with more sedentary lifestyles. When it comes to the mental health benefits of exercise, moving the body to treat and ward off depression makes it worth every last step you take.
2. Reduce feelings of anxiety.
Contrary to popular belief, you might actually be able to run away from your anxiety. But it won’t necessarily involve quitting your job or leaving your city. Instead, regular physical activity (whether that’s jogging, skiing, flowing on your yoga mat—whatever!) can help reduce the symptoms of anxiety. [pullquote align=”center”]“There are several techniques to treat anxiety, and one way is distraction.” —Allison Gervais, LMFT[/pullquote] “There are several techniques to treat anxiety, and one way is distraction,” says Gervais. “Going to the gym with some music can distract us from worry. Physical activity gives your brain a break that might allow you to think more clearly about a problem.” For people with anxiety, reaping the mental health benefits of exercise might depend on how they stay active. Asystematic review of randomized clinical trials found that exercise in general shows promise as a useful treatment for anxiety (but more studies are necessary). The evidence seems to be stronger when you look at yoga—25 out of 35 studies showed that people experience a significant reduction in stress and anxiety when they regularly hit their mats. People who take their workouts outside with just a simple 50-minute walk in the woods alsosaw a drop in anxiety. What’s left is a study that looks at whether doing yoga in the forest offers even more benefits for our minds. Science, we’re waiting for you.
3. Stop insomnia in its tracks.
Ever suffer from insomnia? It’s the worst: You’re up all night, tossing and turning, only getting more and more stressed about the amount of sleep you’re not getting as the clock ticks. It has crept into my life on and off for years, but I’ve found that exercise fights the condition better than anything else I’ve tried. Science supports what I’ve observed about myself—that tiring out your muscles during the day is key to getting a good night’s rest. In fact, mental health and exercise statistics show thataerobics might be just as effective at fighting chronic insomnia as hypnotic drugs are. TheNational Sleep Foundation agrees, citing studies that found that when adults with insomnia started working out, they “fell asleep more quickly, slept slightly longer, and had better sleep quality than before they began exercising.” The mental health benefits of exercise and its ability to help you get a good night’s rest show promise, especially in people with certain disorders, says Gervais. “Sleep helps regulate moods. People with depression might sleep too much, and anxiety can cause insomnia. Getting too little sleep can increase negative emotions, which can result in increasing anxiety and depression,” she explains. “And don’t forget about bipolar disorder, which requires a structured sleep schedule to help remain regulated.” Curiously, exercise seems not only to enhance sleep but also to reduce fatigue. A study out of the University of Georgia found thatpeople who suffer from fatigue can boost their energy levels by 20 percent with regular, low-intensity physical activity. More research needs to be done on the connection between exercise and our energy levels, but it’s clear that moving around on a regular basis plays a role in this relationship.
4. Give stress the one–two punch.
Stress is associated with a host of physical and emotional ailments, from high blood pressure and diabetes to depression and anxiety. But the good news is that working up a sweat can help you work through the stresses of life. “In San Francisco, where my clients live, people are really stressed out. They have a lot going on, between working long hours and over-scheduling themselves, and it can be really difficult to manage,” says Gervais. “But exercise is a really great form of self-care and a good way to take a break. Even going out for a walk or quick jog after work can really relieve some stress.” While exercise is a stress on the body, the physical challenge aids in reducing stress hormones in the brain, which helps people relax. Furthermore, the repetitive motions common in most types of physical activity (think hitting a tennis ball, jumping rope, or lifting weights) put you into a sort ofmoving meditation that promotes calmness and clarity. It helps you forget about the woes of the day and emerge from the gym in a more relaxed state. Ever notice how when you’re stressed out about something at work, you feel the strong urge to take a walk? It’s more than just escapism—it’s your body telling you to work through some of that stress by moving. Listen to it.
5. Boost your heart rate to boost your self-esteem.
Feel down on yourself sometimes? (Who doesn’t?) Self-doubt and low confidence happen to almost everyone from time to time, but a boost in self-esteem is actually one of the mental health benefits of exercise. Exercising always comes with challenges. For some people, that challenge is simply making it to the gym when they intend to. For others, it might mean achieving a personal best in their sport, whether that’s running or softball. Small or large, those successes add up and give you a new perspective on what you’re able to achieve both in and out of the gym. The social benefits of exercise also go on to improve how we see ourselves. Joining a sport, working out at a gym, or even running outside gives us the chance to get into the world and potentially connect with others. “Exercise combats isolation,” says Gervais. “Part of isolation is that people really don’t feel confident in a social situation, so building self-esteem can help with that. Even just being in an environment with other people can help, but you can take it a step further and join a walking club or group fitness class and start meeting others.” Take it from me—working out is what gave me enough confidence to quit the corporate worldand pursue my dreams of writing. Who knows where an exercise-induced surge in confidence could lead you? Although people have known anecdotally for some time that physical activity helps their general mental health, scientists are only now starting to discover the true extent of the benefits of exercise on clinical mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. More study needs to be done on exactly what types of exercise are best for our psychological health, how often we should be active, and what kinds of environments are best for working out. But with what researchers have discovered so far, it’s hard to doubt the mental health benefits of exercise. Until we have more conclusive data, don’t worry so much about the details: Just focus on moving, regularly and often, and working with a qualified mental health professional to ensure you’re feeling your absolute best—mind and body. Find an activity you enjoy, schedule it throughout your week, and see what mental health benefits of exercise blossom in your life.
