Why Herbalism, And What It’s Like To Work With A Registered Herbalist

Herbalism popped up on my radar a few months back, when I was considering visiting a chiropractor or acupuncturist to address some ongoing health-related issues. I’m all for eating, drinking, and working my way toward my own personal definition of wellness, but until recently I hadn’t considered herbal medicine as an approach to managing chronic headaches, allergies, or reproductive health issues.
If you’ve ever found yourself in Whole Foods feeling completely overwhelmed by all the unfamiliar herbs and supplements you could stock up on, or if you’ve wondered what it’s like to take tinctures or use herbal teas medicinally, here’s my tell-all, plus a Q+A with Zoe Kissam of Traditional Medicinals—whose products you’ll enjoy even more once you know how they’re made and who they’re supporting.

How Herbalism Found Me

Last fall I reconnected with Charis Boke, a Cornell PhD candidate I met eight years ago at Cornell’s Intensive Nepali Language Program. I was immediately enamored with Boke. Her Nepali was awe inspiring; she was well read, well traveled, and well spoken (in the this-is-social-justice-in-action kind of way); and she taught me how to pour a beer.
Boke’s research interests have changed since we last saw each other. She studies and writes about herbalism and self-identifies as “a scholar–practitioner, an environmental and medical anthropologist who takes plant medicine and its practitioners seriously and practices herbalism herself.” In addition to her research and teaching—and leading student groups in the Himalayas—she was willing to talk herbalism with me when we reconnected.

Why Herbalism Piqued My Interest

We covered a lot of ground during our Skype session, from herbal teas and infusions to fermented foods and digestive aids. The way Boke speaks about plants and food on the level of metaphor—Roses are beautiful, but they have thorns. They have boundaries, right?—is exciting.
I also appreciated the judgment-free space she created, which wound up carrying over into my initial consultation with Kristine Brown, an American Herbalists Guild registered herbalist who practices over the river on the Illinois side of the Saint Louis metro area, where I live.
Like Boke, Brown was completely unperturbed by my self-disclosure of not-so-fun female health issues and having participated in intense group therapy sessions in 2017. (We’re talking everything from anger- and shame-release techniques involving boxing gloves and punching bags to practicing guided meditation.)
Meeting with Brown, I got to see how and where an herbalist works, which wound up being an important part of my introduction to herbal medicine. She welcomed me into her study—the front room of a saged-out farmhouse piled high with books and adorned with eclectic artwork and animal bones—and we settled in for a most interesting (and thorough) intake visit.

Interested in seeing a registered herbalist? Here are my recommendations based on my initial consultation.

Dear Curious, meet the American Herbalists Guild.

Boke told me in our Skype session that she recommended I see an herbalist in person, given the extent of my health concerns. She pointed me to the American Herbalists Guild (AHG), a non-profit organization that “promotes clinical herbalism as a viable profession rooted in ethics, competency, diversity, and freedom of practice” and “supports access to herbal medicine for all and advocates excellence in herbal education.”

HealthyWay
Traditional Medicinals

Poking around the Herbalists Guild site took the edge off my concern that herbalism might just be the kind of woo-woo that deserves the cynic’s raised eyebrow. It should be noted that in many states, anyone can call themselves an herbalist as an extension of their free speech, but becoming a registered herbalist (or RH) through the AHG involves years of study, casework, and mentorship.
It was through the Guild’s site that I found Brown, who runs Luna Farm, Luna Herb Co., and Herbal Roots Zine (meaning she is a farmer, writer, and educator in addition to being a practicing herbalist). Brown has trained under Leslie Alexander, PhD, a registered herbalist with a background in laboratory science and environmental epidemiology (all of which sounds decidedly less woo than my background in the humanities).
Long story short: If you’re ready to graduate from curious about herbalism to consulting with an herbalist, visit the AHG’s list of practitioners.

Set aside some time to complete the intake paperwork.

After scheduling my initial appointment, I printed out Brown’s 15 pages of intake paperwork, which included information about her relationship with the American Herbalists Guild and dozens of questions about my family history, physical health, childhood, dietary habits, the state of my emotions and feelings, and my impetus for seeking out an herbal consultation.
One Saturday afternoon I curled up with my lapdesk and a trusty pen and got to work. I answered the questions as honestly as possible and was impressed by how effortlessly they guided my thoughts on my experience of health. I was able to really get a sense of how herbal medicine approaches the mind–body connection, which prepared me for a raw and real discussion.
I suggest giving yourself a chunk of alone time to complete your herbalist’s paperwork because it will require concentration and a great deal of self-honesty about your relationships (both with your body and the other people in your life). For me, it was akin to a journaling experience—not something you want to be doing over breakfast with your SO, while paying bills, or when you’re responsible for supervising kiddos’ playtime.

Invest in a snazzy calendar or notebook.

Or prepare to get cozy with Google Calendar or a favorite diet-tracking app. I’ve always shied away from this exercise because it seems so nitpicky, but Brown’s intake paperwork featured a lot of questions about diet, and I wish I’d started tracking my eats prior to scheduling my first appointment.
If you’re considering seeing an herbalist but haven’t set something up yet, start logging your snacks and meals today; it’ll make the intake paperwork and initial consultation that much easier. If you’re off to see an herbalist tomorrow, know that they will likely encourage you to log your diet in addition to whatever herbal teas and other herbal supplements you wind up incorporating into your self-care routine.

Forget palm reading: Prepare to have your tongue read.

Yes, you read that right. One of the ways an herbalist might evaluate your overall health is by having a good look at your tongue—and diagramming it. “Stick out your tongue” is something most of us have heard since the days of pediatricians with popsicle sticks, but when it came time for my tongue reading (which I was expecting after reviewing Brown’s consultations page), I realized I shouldn’t have sipped mint tea during the drive from the office to her place. I wanted to have fresh breath for the appointment but wound up muddling things a bit.
[pullquote align=”center”]Herbal medicine emphasizes emotional well-being just as much as it does the use of herbal remedies for physical ailments.[/pullquote]
Among other things, Brown noted a green film on the underside of my tongue, which she told me could be from the tea or an indication of certain nutritional deficiencies. My takeaway: Stick to water the day of your appointment.

It’s not the therapist’s couch, but…

Get ready to answer some questions you haven’t been asked by your GP and to explore some unexpected ideas. I was surprised by many of Brown’s questions and my own responses, and I learned that herbal medicine emphasizes emotional well-being just as much as it does the use of herbal remedies for physical ailments.
Going into your initial consultation, you can take heart in the American Herbalists Guild code of ethics, which features a confidentiality statement:
“Personal information gathered in the herbalist/client relationship will be held in strict confidence by the AHG member unless specifically allowed by the client.”
Brown’s paperwork went so far as to reference HIPAA privacy regulations, so between that and the professionalism and open mindedness she exuded, I felt comfortable telling her anything I would share with a doctor or even a shrink. And ultimately my openness with her led to creative and insightful recommendations that went far beyond herbal supplementation.

Know that herbalism isn’t either/or.

While herbalism might seem super crunchy or “far out,” herbalists aren’t anti-MD or against allopathic medicine. According to a peer-reviewed study that included 479 naturopaths and Western herbalists, 99 percent consider documented, traditional evidence to be essential or important. The study’s conclusion: “Naturopaths and [Western herbal medicine] practitioners accept the importance of scientific evidence whilst maintaining the importance and use of traditional evidence.”
Anecdotally, during my initial visit, Brown discussed how helpful it can be to have the results from recent bloodwork, and her intake paperwork makes it clear that she’s supportive of clients having an MD in addition to working with an herbalist. Also, I did not turn to herbalism for a diagnosis.
[pullquote align=”center”]I see herbalism as a new way to approach my body that allows me to move from asking “What’s wrong with me?” to “What more can I know about myself?”[/pullquote]
I understand my symptomatology in light of diagnoses from healthcare providers including an allergist, a geneticist, and a wonderful women’s health nurse practitioner and see herbalism as a new way to approach my body that allows me to move from asking “What’s wrong with me?” to “What more can I know about myself?”

Starting the Herbal Regimen

Herbal medicine isn’t a quick fix. I would love to say I’m less hustle and more flow, but I tend toward a third descriptor: the less-sexy antsy. It takes time for an herbalist to put their recommended protocol together, but I’m used to a world where I can swerve through the pharmacy’s drive-through and have a prescription in my hands 30 minutes after leaving the doctor’s office.
When I received Brown’s recommendations via email—six days after we met—I felt like a long-distance lover pining for an emotionally charged airport reunion. It was go time!
Or not…because incorporating herbal medicine into your routine is predicated on having herbs, which in many cases means ordering them, waiting for them, and preparing them (sometimes overnight or throughout the day), all of which makes herbalism just as much ritual as it is remedy.
In between receiving my protocol from Brown and getting the herbs to put the plans into action, I had plenty of time to think about her recommendations, which fell into four categories: herbal, supplement, dietary, and lifestyle. I’ll share the basics to give you a taste, but note that dosage information is omitted since it will differ significantly depending on a person’s needs, symptoms, size, and sensitivities.

Herbal Suggestions

Herbal Extracts

Also known as tinctures (such a cool word, right?) extracts are essentially herbs in alcohol or another solvent that are dispensed from a little dropper bottle. Brown recommended a vitex, aka chasteberry, tincture for rebalancing my never-sure-how-it’s-feeling female reproductive system, and she suggested New England aster drops for addressing my allergies and asthma.
While there’s plenty of research on the use of vitex for female reproductive health (it’s formally approved for the treatment of PMS in Germany), New England aster is a more obscure treatment that’s being revived by herbalists including Brown and jim mcdonald, who both have wonderful articles on their experiences with the strong, flowering plant.
I purchased my herbal tinctures directly from Brown, who makes them herself, and they’re the first thing I got my hands on because they were available locally. I picked them up one morning before work and excitedly hauled them into the office.
Brown told me some people squirt tinctures directly into their mouths, and I’m a fan of sour, bitter, and bold flavors. So seated comfortably in a bathroom stall thinking Go hard or go home, I leaned my head back and took the dropperful of vitex straight—no chaser. It was potent, but not unbearable. Next up was the New England aster tincture, and whoa mama, I don’t recommend that.
My eyes were watering, my throat burned, and I was worried that my co-workers would think I’d had a two-martini breakfast. I learned then and there to dilute my herbal tinctures in a splash of water or the end of a cup of herbal tea.
In addition to diluting tinctures, I also recommend keeping dropper bottles of them easily accessible wherever you’ll be taking them to cut down on the hauling back and forth. For example, I take them first thing in the morning, after lunch, and before bed, so I have dropper bottles of both herbal tinctures at home and on my desk at the office, which has made following the regimen significantly less stressful.

Herbal Infusions

I wouldn’t call myself Tincture Girl (though following the regimen has gotten easier), so I was pretty excited to see if the infusions were more my jam.
What’s an infusion? Think an overnight or all-day tea. Instead of steeping a bag or infuser of loose leaf for a few minutes before sipping, you let larger quantities of dry ingredients—for example, a cup of dry herbs in four cups of water—soak while you sleep. In the morning, you have an herbal infusion you can drink throughout the day.
Brown recommended I rotate infusions of linden, milky oat tops, and nettle: one infusion a day each day of the week. According to her protocol, “Milky oats is nourishing to the nervous system; nettle is full of vitamins and minerals, gives energy, and can decrease allergic reaction to various types of allergies over time; linden is another nervine and also supportive of the heart, both physically and emotionally, and increases circulation,” all of which sounded excellent, especially considering I have a cold constitution (think perpetually chilly hands and feet).
[pullquote align=”center”]I went from pouring myself a cup to panicking that I wasn’t going to be able to follow the infusion regimen.[/pullquote]
The pound of linden—leaves and flowers from the linden or lime tree—arrived first. The night the package came I boiled a kettle full of water before bed, dumped the goods in a trusty thermos, and let ’er steep. In the morning, I went from pouring myself a cup to panicking that I wasn’t going to be able to follow the infusion regimen. I’m not a fan of the term mouthfeel, and the linden infusion did not have a good mouthfeel. Thick and gelatinous sums it up, and I was pretty much choking it down.
The oat top infusion was pleasant (and tea like), but on day three, I found the nettle infusion disturbingly strong, like straining the liquid off of sauteed spinach and slurping it down.
I felt like a failure. Had I messed up the ratios? Did I just have a weak stomach that would forever get in the way of my healing?
I texted Brown, who encouraged me to try diluting the linden infusion and turning to another herb, peppermint, to mask the “green” flavor of the nettles. The next time I made the linden tea, I used a third of the amount of dry herb she’d initially recommended; a bag of peppermint tea per cup of nettle infusion has made it my favorite-tasting herbal remedy so far.
Planning on incorporating herbal infusions? You’ll want to have plenty of mason jars on hand, and get yourself a wide-mouth funnel and a strainer set to ensure your infusions make it from vessel to vessel seamlessly.

Supplement Suggestions

I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency years ago and take a vitamin D supplement daily. Brown recommended I stay on that and add a magnesium supplement, which she said helps with vitamin D absorption.
Although she noted that powdered magnesium, which you’d mix with water and drink, is the most bioavailable form, I asked her to recommend a capsule. Between the tinctures and infusions, I wasn’t excited about adding one more liquid (that wasn’t coffee or LaCroix) to my routine.

Dietary Suggestions

Bone broth, cinnamon, and lentils were among Brown’s dietary suggestions, though I was pleased to get her overall stamp of approval on my flexitarian approach to eating.
I’ve definitely noticed that I’m drinking more water and fewer sugary beverages since incorporating the herbal infusions into my everyday, and I do put cinnamon in my overnight oats regularly since receiving the protocol. At this point, bone broth is still on my to-try list, and I see myself continuing to turn to various curries for the boost of turmeric associated with the lentil dish Brown recommended for weekday lunches.

Lifestyle Suggestions

Ecotherapy

I’m not a cold-weather person, and I’m not going to lie: The dreary winter months meant many nights on the couch with Carrie, Mr. Big, and the ladies of Sex and the City. During my intake visit, I told Brown I take a walk to the grocery store or around a park or my neighborhood about once a week, but that may have been fudging a bit. Her recommendation: more time outdoors for the sake of my mental health.
“Start by doubling what you do now. Instead of one walk a week around the block or in the park, try twice a week. Even a walk around the block at lunchtime is good. Make a point to seek out natural environments during the walk: Focus on birdsongs, plants emerging, flowers blooming, trees leafing out. Gradually work on increasing this until you are walking four to five times a week.”

Alone Time

This recommendation was the clincher. After hearing about my home life and routines that mean I’m out of the house a lot while my husband works from home, she suggested I “work out a schedule for alone time in the house” while my husband is gone, “so you have time to just be with yourself.”
As a married person who struggles with codependent tendencies, this was a tall order, but it wound up leading to a fruitful conversation and more of what I need. (Not sure where to start when it comes to prioritizing self-love and alone time when you’re in a relationship? Check out these tips.)

Concerned about cost? Here’s what you can expect to invest in herbal products and consultations.

According to a University of Minnesota Taking Charge of Your Health & Wellbeing resource, initial herbal consultation fees range from $30 to $60, and a monthly supply of herbs can cost between $30 and $60.
These numbers echo the investment I’ve made so far, and unlike chiropractic care and acupuncture, which are sometimes covered by insurance, consulting with an herbalist and purchasing bulk herbs and extracts based on their recommendations likely involves an out-of-pocket expense.
That said, the American Herbalists Guild’s code of ethics espouses humanitarian service, stating that members should not make monetary compensation their primary consideration. In addition to individual consultations, many herbalists offer more affordable group workshops that might put herbalism within reach regardless of your current financial situation.

Unsure about diving head first into working with an herbalist? How about a nice cup of (herbal) tea instead?

While following an herbalist’s recommendations has been an interesting and high-impact experience for me (nice to meet you, noticeably gentler monthly cycles and fewer headache days), when Boke and I first chatted herbs, she pointed out that many people incorporate herbalism into their daily routine without even knowing it. If you’ve ever sipped on a lemony brew when you’ve had a sore throat or peppermint tea for an upset stomach, you’ve treated yourself to a mugful of herbal medicine.
As my exploration of herbalism unfolded, I reached out to Traditional Medicinals—the most popular seller of wellness teas in the States and an American Herbalists Guild member institution—and was treated to a Q+A with Zoe Kissam, Traditional Medicinals herbalist and marketing manager of innovation.
Despite there being many barriers to herbalism and other complementary approaches to health, Kissam points out that “tea is a really accessible and unintimidating way of introducing people to herbs.”
I also appreciate and want to note that:

  • Regardless of your locale, odds are you can find quality herbal teas at your go-to grocery store.
  • If cost is a barrier, herbal teas may be more accessible than supplements, tinctures, and infusions. They require a modest initial investment—typically less than $10 for a box or tin of about 20 servings.
  • While items that have “a Supplement Facts label [are] considered a supplement and [are] not eligible for SNAP purchase,” some herbal teas, including certain Traditional Medicinals products, can be purchased using SNAP/food stamps.
  • You can take teas on the go. By throwing a few bags of your favorite herbal teas in your purse, diaper bag, or coat pocket, you can enjoy an impromptu tea time whenever you have a moment for yourself and access to hot water.

Herbal Tea Q+A

Kissam is a Sonoma County, California, native who first started incorporating herbs into her wellness routine as a teenager. She worked at a health food store, grew her understanding of what it meant to live a holistic lifestyle, and went on to earn her certification in herbalism and her clinical certification. As of 2018, she’s worked at Traditional Medicinals for 11 years (and counting).
Publisher’s note: This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

HealthyWay: Who were you educated under and what traditions inform your approach to herbs?

Kissam: I studied at the California School of Herbal Studies, which focuses on Western herbal medicine but touches on a myriad of traditional herbal medicine practices like Chinese medicine and Ayurveda and even Native American herbal medicine.

What is Traditional Medicinals’ process for determining its herbal tea blends?

New products come to our innovation team in a number of ways. Our herbalists consider the need state or benefit that the tea should provide and then look at traditional formulations or modern phytotherapy that will support the best and most rational herbal formula to meet those needs. All formulas are reviewed through our [research and development] team for safety, as well as through our supply chain to make sure we can find enough high-quality herbs to meet demand.

What are Traditional Medicinals’ most popular blends and why?

Smooth Move is our best-selling laxative tea for occasional constipation. It is loved by tea drinkers and non-tea drinkers alike because of both its reliability and its gentle action in the way it works.
Throat Coat is one of our original formulas, featuring soothing slippery elm, licorice, and marshmallow root promote throat health.

Traditional Medicinals

Turmeric With Meadowsweet and Ginger is one of our new kids on the block but is quickly becoming a top seller because of its unique combination of well-known turmeric and herbalist-loved meadowsweet and ginger. This tea is an herbal trifecta of ancient wisdom and soothing relief that promotes healthy digestion and supports a healthy response to inflammation associated with exercise.

What different types of professionals does Traditional Medicinals have on staff, and what is it like working with these different people—and learning from them—to make and market herbal products?

Traditional Medicinals employs over 180 people that support our mission-driven different company in so many ways.
We have eight herbal experts that span the company from [research and development] and marketing to quality control. Collectively, they have over 100 years of combined experience during which they have authored more than 25 books, led a wide variety of industry groups and panels, and helped a vast number of people improve their health and wellness with plant medicine.
But we have a belief that the plants call people to work in this company, and all 180 of those employees are herb nerds in some way or another. It is this group of impassioned people that truly believe in serving our mission that embraces sustainability, ingredient purity, and social and environmental activism.

Why do you think people are comfortable with teas, and what role do you see Traditional Medicinals playing in making herbal medicine accessible?

Well tea itself, referring to the Camellia sinensis plant which produces green and black tea, is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. For me, it’s a personal connection—my mom drank a cup of tea every night after dinner and my grandmother and her friends always served tea with dessert.
Many people have rituals around drinking a cup of hot tea and may not even think about it. Many associate herbal tea with relaxation, which is an obvious reason why some of our teas for tension and stress are so popular and why chamomile tea itself, for all brands, is the number one selling herbal tea in the health and natural foods channel.
Tea, as a form, is warm, comforting, and inviting. The fact that it can also have a benefit is icing on the cake. This is why we believe tea is a really accessible and unintimidating way of introducing people to herbs.

Are your teas as potent as tinctures or infusions?

All of our teas are formulated to provide benefits and support the claims we make. There are some herbs that are more beneficial in capsule or tincture form because they are not water soluble. However, all of our blends use herbs that are quite appropriate in tea—digestive teas getting right where they need to go, Throat Coat tea coating the throat as it is consumed, and so on. Anyone drinking these teas should feel very confident that they are getting an appropriate dose of the herbs that we blend with.

What types of teas, if any, do you recommend for pregnancy, anxiety, and depression, and why?

For pregnancy, depending on the stage of pregnancy you are in, there are many herbs that can be supportive.

For occasional anxiety we have several formulas that are great to take, and honestly just sitting down and slowing down and having a cup of tea can be really helpful.

  • Our Chamomile With Lavender tea settles your nervous system and relaxes your digestive system, [so it’s] especially good when stressed or tense.
  • Our Stress Ease Cinnamon tea features a favorite herb of herbalists, skullcap, which relieves stress and irritability and promotes relaxation, plus it’s really tasty! I love drinking it in the late afternoon on a hectic day or right before my cycle starts and I’m feeling a little, let’s say, “edgy”?

Do you have any recommended regimens for regular consumption or drinking during an illness, PMS, or menstruation?

Our teas support various functions of the body and aid in conditions like occasional constipation, getting a good night’s sleep, or heart health. We have over 60 that are supportive for digestion, relaxation, seasonal care, women’s health, et cetera.
For PMS and menstruation we have a range of teas that can offer support during different phases of a woman’s life.

  • Healthy Cycle is a blend of herbs that can help regulate the menstrual cycle and can even help with cramping.
  • Weightless tea is helpful for water retention.
  • Raspberry Leaf tea also helps support regular menstrual cycles.
  • Stress Ease Cinnamon can help support irritability and promote relaxation and can be really helpful during PMS.

Traditional Medicinals

Is it safe to combine Traditional Medicinals’ teas with other medications? Are there any specific teas that should be approached with caution?

Everyone should check with their doctor or healthcare practitioner before using herbs in combination with other medications. All of our teas include cautions and warnings on the box that are different depending on the products and should be referenced.

Are there any teas women should avoid while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Because every pregnancy is different, always check with your healthcare practitioner prior to using herbs while pregnant or breastfeeding. We find that some moms commonly enjoy the following teas during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For use of other teas during these times, please speak with your healthcare practitioner.
Pregnancy: Ginger tea, Pregnancy tea, Raspberry Leaf tea, Lemon Balm tea
Nursing: Mother’s Milk, Mother’s Milk Shatavari

Are all your teas organic? How does Traditional Medicinals decide where to source ingredients from?

95 percent of our teas are organic. We source our organic and high-quality herbs from the environments where they can be grown at a medicinal grade. This helps to ensure that the active constituents are in the right amounts so that you get a consistent benefit from our teas, cup after cup.

Traditional Medicinals is making a Throat Coat “Just for Kids.” How does it differ from Throat Coat, and do you recommend any other teas for children?

Just for Kids Cold Care is formulated specifically for children featuring lower doses of herbs and a [sweetener-free, 100 percent herbal] taste kids enjoy. Currently this item is only available for purchase online, via Amazon or other retailers. For other teas, always read the side panel. Teas not suitable for children will indicate they are for adults only and may list age restrictions.

Any tips for preparing and enjoying herbal teas?

First, check the back of your Traditional Medicinals tea box and read the instructions to see if there are any unique suggestions, such as adding milk or sugar. Each of our teas will also have a suggested steeping time, which depends greatly on the herbs inside. These practices often improve the taste of the tea and effectiveness of the herbs.
Boil water and pour into your teacup with the tea bag placed inside.
Cover your teacup and allow the herbs to steep. After a few minutes, it’s not just water that is acting on the herbs. The water itself changes as the herbs infuse into it. Depending on what compounds are first released, the water can become a mild acid or base, which in turn affects the release of other compounds in the herbs.
The act of covering your tea ensures warmth, a full extraction, and that the essential oils of the herbs, which are very beneficial, stay in your cup. This is why the recommended steeping times on our tea boxes range from five to 15 minutes for full potency.

I’ve been poking around Plant Power Journal and noticed that Traditional Medicinals has a number of other outreach and educational efforts.

Traditional Medicinals is committed to social development projects funded in sourcing communities—and women and girls are some of the greatest beneficiaries.
One of Traditional Medicinals’ programs is the Revive Project, which focuses on water security interventions in the senna-growing villages of Rajasthan, India. In 2009, Traditional Medicinals, Traditional Medicinals Foundation, and WomenServe launched the project in the Thar Desert, one of the driest places on earth, where temperatures can reach as high as 122° F. Women and girls must walk miles for hours each day in search of water for their families, crops, and livestock.
In an effort to overcome these challenges, the Revive Project’s initiatives have so far benefitted six communities with around 12,000 villagers. The project has desilted and expanded six large community ponds, dug and rebuilt 145 agricultural rainwater catchment systems, and constructed 510 taankas (underground rainwater catchments) for families in need. These taankas provide year-round water security, eliminating the need for women and girls to walk thousands of miles each year and providing them with the opportunity to attend school and trainings, engage in income-generating activities, and become empowered village leaders.

Anything else you’d like readers to know?

While tea is an accessible and familiar way to introduce people to the power of plants, sometimes people need something more portable. Like Jules, she’s made a space for herself by opening up about her health and wellness experiences—particularly caring for herself in light of her Hashimoto’s thyroiditis diagnosis and struggling with disordered eating.

Of course, both Jules and Minna are fans of turmeric, too. Here are some more of Minna’s favorite products:

4. Saje, Not Sage

“I’m addicted to all of Saje’s essential oils,” Minna told HealthyWay, going on to say that she likes to put them in a diffuser and use them topically. Lucky for us, the brand offers their blends in roll-on applicators and dropper bottles, plus they have multiple diffuser options and aromatherapy hand soap.

Another influencer, Sammy Eason of the lifestyle and momming blog Mother of Chunk, told HealthyWay she loves Saje’s Head Soother Kit. The collection includes three essential oil blends that come in unique applicators so you can roll, mist, or wand your headache away (or at least into gentle submission). They’re 100 percent vegan and are formulated with natural ingredients including oils from flowers, herbs, and seeds—no synthetics or dyes.

5. Something Grand

Or gran, that is—Kari Gran. Minna said she uses this cleansing oil for a nighttime double cleanse. Not familiar with the benefits of the double cleanse? It might be time to brush up, because this product is made specifically for washing your face before bed, which can be taken to a whole new level if you know what Minna’s up to and why.

If the possibility of balancing your skin’s natural oil production isn’t enough to pique your interest, there’s also the fact that Kari Gran products are handcrafted in Seattle, are cruelty free, and include the good stuff like wild harvested and organic ingredients.

6. A Whip for Your Lip(s)

In addition to Kari Gran’s cleansing oil, Minna has another favorite Kari Gran product. “Her lip whips are to die for!” she told us back in the spring, when a poppy color like Radiant would’ve been perfect.

With fall coming on, we’re feeling rich tones, like Marsala or Jeannie. Of course, Peppermint Naked is a good option for rocking a perfectly hydrated nude lip year round.

A post shared by PAYTON SARTAIN (@paytonsartain) on

The woman knows how to rock a swimsuit and loves to go makeup- (and pants-) free, which means she gets us and gives us something to aspire to. Here are her skincare picks:

7. A Spritz of This

Okay, more of a spray, considering Payton recommends Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Sheer Mineral Spray Sunscreen with SPF 50+ protection.

HealthyWay
Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare

This product is formulated with biotin, tea, and Indian gooseberry extract. Water babies and anyone venturing out on a hot day with exposed skin will appreciate that it retains its sunblocking power for 40 minutes in the water or extremely moist, aka sweaty, conditions.

8. For Busy Bees

Payton recommended this BB cream from Burt’s Bees—and it’s a perfect pick for busy bees, since it will help you moisturize and protect your face even if you’re looking to be as close to makeup- (and pant-) free as possible.

With SPF 15, beeswax (of course), jojoba esters, and sunflower seed oil, this is a moisturizing option that’s meant to firm, conceal, and smooth skin, whether you want a little coverage for blemishes or fine lines and wrinkles.

“Jazz on Dub” artist Jah9 is one of the creators I truly relish following on Instagram, and I actually got to meet her during her 2018 tour, so I’d be remiss not to include a Jah9 pick in our influencer roundup.

A post shared by Jah9 (@jah9online) on

When interviewed by HealthyWay, she focused more on her spiritual and cultural interests than making product recommendations—sharing (in the tongue-in-cheek way only a lyrical poetess can), “I am reading Her-Bak: The Living Face of Ancient Egypt, watching my herb trees grow, and listening to my intuition more and more.”
Thus, our Jah9 recommendation is some fresh-pressed vinyl for the record player you treated yourself to that really is so much more than a glorified piece of nostalgia.

9. “Things That Make Your Body Feel Good”

The official editorial review for this album points out that “Jah9 specializes in feelings. Her unique vocal delivery spins a narrative thread that attracts fans of reggae and other genres to a new space along the musical landscape.”

HealthyWay
Amazon

If you aren’t familiar with reggae or dub, you owe it to yourself to experience Jah9’s powerful beats. And who doesn’t need to be reminded of the importance of the healthy things (like staying hydrated, working it out on our yoga mats, and eating well) that make our bodies feel good? Cue the needle and give yourself permission to celebrate.

That said, they’re also passionate about skincare and beauty products. Here are their recs:

10. Back to Basics

With all the extract-, peptide-, vitamin-, ester-, and whatever-other-ingredient-packed lotions, creams, and serums on the market, sometimes it’s nice to evade the extras and moisturize with a single-ingredient option. Jess recommends Desert Essence 100% Jojoba Oil for Hair, Skin, and Scalp.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Desert Essence is a trusted and easily accessible brand, and Jess told us, “I don’t use anything on my skin but this…I even wash my face with it.”
Personally, I like to moisturize my legs with it immediately after shaving—especially on rainy days when I’m planning to wear a dress or skirt. True story: I have a weird thing about the feeling of my lotioned legs getting wet after the lotion was supposed to dry. Moisturizing with natural oils means no regret-worthy “lotion slime.”

11. Eye Like It

Wendy’s a fan of Zuzu Luxe liquid eyeliner, as are over 250 other people who’ve given the product 4- and 5-star reviews.

The eyeliner comes in not one, not two, but seven different colors, which means you can keep it classic with Raven (aka black) or get artsy with the copper-toned Luxor or bright blue Azure.

[sul title=”Morgan Tyler of the Southern Yogi” subheader=”507k Instagram Followers”]
Morgan Tyler started out a swimmer and is now one of the most influential yogis on Instagram. She’s a woman who knows about starting over: She got a degree in vascular ultrasound, pivoted, worked as a barista, went through a divorce, and—not too long ago—switched to a new Instagram account where she promotes her wildly successful Ab’Asanas.

One of the things that’s grounded and comforted Morgan during these (very relatable) changes? Tea, and more specifically, dessert tea from Tazo and Bigelow, which we can definitely get behind. She told HealthyWay she can’t travel without buying these two options:

12. Something Yummy (And a Little Nostalgic)

Bigelow describes Morgan’s number one pick as “Yummy Caramel Tea,” but officially it’s called Salted Caramel.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Each retro-looking box of goodness contains 20 individually wrapped tea bags in foil pouches, meaning it really is perfect to travel with, as air and moisture are locked out until you’re ready to pour yourself a cup of caramel brew. Note that this blend contains black tea, meaning caffeine.

13. Do blondes really have more fun?

Well, we can’t really ask a tea that, but this Butterscotch Blondie blend from Tazo does come in delightful packaging.

Considering that it contains black tea (so quite a bit of caffeine) and hints of sugar-free, sweetener-free butterscotch and vanilla, it has the potential to fuel a good time for any tea lover—regardless of your hair color.

But she does so much more than that, like working as the global digital editor at Christian Louboutin, teaching at NYU, and giving those of us who are caffeine free an influencer-approved tea recommendation.

14. Loose Leaf, Caffeine-Free Tea in a Smart-Looking Tin

Nicole and (going by the Amazon reviews) a lot of other smart ladies are fans of this complex tea brought to you by Rishi, which means seer or sage. Fitting, considering the recommendation comes from an NYU professor…

The Turmeric Ginger Ayurvedic blend is hot with a sweet finish, thanks to the inclusion of ginger, licorice, and Meyer lemon, which are all organic. According to Rishi, the pungency of the ginger root in this tea is well balanced, which is something we can aspire to as we pour ourselves a cup.

15. A Hug for Your Favorite Fruits and Veggies

18. What’s love got to do with it?

Well, everything, considering the book Shona told us helped her survive a tough breakup is titled Essays in Love. It’s written by Alain de Botton—a British-Swiss philosopher who believes in Art as Therapy (yes, my I-got-my-undergrad-in-philosophy-and-like-to-collage interest is piqued). Nikki Sharp’s IG feed is all smiles, but her blog goes deep about having struggled to recover from multiple eating disorders—and how that journey’s involved incorporating meditation, journaling, and colorful foods into her everyday life.

Nikki also notes that she started seeing exercise as a reward, not a punishment, and that shines through, especially in the many IG pics and videos in which she’s striking powerful yoga poses in stunning settings. Still, when it comes down to it, she makes it clear that life is first and foremost about the heart and mind, which makes these books, which were on Nikki’s bedside table back in May, all the more interesting.

19. “A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life”

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: You’ve probably heard of it before. It’s a No. 1 New York Times Bestseller with over 3 million copies sold (at least one of them to Nikki!) and over 4,000 reviews on Amazon, which is a lot.

AmazonPeople say the book has changed their lives, made them better partners, and allowed them to appreciate the world more. 21. Are you willing to question everything (even if it’s just for a few minutes a day)?

The intro to Break the Norms: Questioning Everything You Think You Know About God and Truth, Life and Death, Love and Sex is written by none other than the Dalai Lama—which definitely says something about this pick. In addition to writing and teaching, Bhardwaj founded the Break the Norms non-profit, which seeks to create meditation communities “in every corner of the world with the purpose of awakening the divine consciousness within them, pulling them away from pre-programmed expectations of lack and loneliness, and facilitating a culture of abundance, gratitude, and self-awareness.”

Of course, we all exist at the crossroads of biochemistry, physiology, spirit, and psyche, and we can really enjoy and make the most of this when we drop in and dedicate ourselves to good self-care. For many of us, this is directly connected to making responsible, sustainable, cruelty-free purchases and using products that put a little pep in our step (or bounce in our bob?). Jennie’s product recommendation definitely checks those boxes, and then some.

23. A Hair Ritual

36 Of The Best Products For People Over 60

Poet, businessman, and humanitarian, Samuel Ullman, was onto something when he wrote: “Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
No matter your age, you can find a nugget of truth in his words that reminds you of your personal passions—the things that make you tick and cause you to smile from ear to ear. That said, decade by decade, our bodies and needs change. Thanks to human inventiveness and creativity, it’s easier than ever to support ourselves and our loved ones in aging.
Here are 36 products that will help seniors maintain their independence, invest in self-care, and keep up enthusiasm in the third act.

Health and Body

1. Brush up on your self-care.

“One of the important things in life is eating, both for the social aspect and the nutritional aspect,” says Sandra J. Eleczko, DDS, a dentist practicing in Livonia, New York. “Senior citizens need to maintain a healthy diet and they need to be able to go out and eat with friends and family. They need their teeth!”
She explains that this is why oral health is critically important, especially for those over 60.
“Oral B electric B electric toothbrushes can help patients with arthritic hands clean their teeth efficiently.”

HealthyWay
Amazon

While you can easily spend over $100 on a rechargeable electric toothbrush system, why not start with a four-pack of Pulsar Vibrating Bristles brushes for under $20?

2. Another Pick for Your Pearly Whites

Eleczko says, “Water flossers are the other wonderful oral device to help people keep their teeth clean and healthy.”
While floss and even Plackers require a lot of intricate maneuvering, water flossers and oral irrigators are much larger, meaning they’re easier to grip. The water stream can be directed much more easily than floss, which ensures a better clean without the hassle.
Our pick is the ultra high–rated and American Dental Association–accepted Aquarius Water Flosser from Waterpik.

Amazon

Eleczo says, “I see seniors every day who can’t eat and can’t go out with their friends, who are feeling so isolated because they are not comfortable eating, smiling, and talking in public.” Her advice: “Keep the teeth healthy and the rest will be happier and healthier.”

3. Keep moving.

An Aaptiv spokesperson who shared some insights with HealthyWay says the slick-looking app is perfect for people who’ve put off exercise until retirement. Why? It features low-intensity workouts and the company has even worked with trainers to develop programming with older audiences in mind.

HealthyWay
Aaptiv

They share that thanks to Aaptiv, a 55-year-old subscriber ran her first ever marathon last year. While not all of us have our hearts set on running 26 miles any time in the future (regardless of our age), we all know the importance of keeping active. Aaptiv’s audio workouts are take-anywhere and don’t require studying any complicated poses or movements, making keeping up with our fitness goals on our own time easier—and more interactive—than ever.

4. For a More Comfortable Workout

Whether you choose to workout with an app, like to follow along with exercise videos, or head to your local yoga studio once or twice a week, investing in a thick, supportive mat will help you move through your workout as comfortably as possible.
Yoga instructor, Keri Kugler, recommends the Sivan Yoga Set in her roundup of best budget yoga mats and sets, and this pick will definitely make sense for your joints and your wallet.

Kugler says the mat is extremely thick and that it’s ideal for exercises that involve being on your back or knees. Plus, it comes with two blocks that you can use to support yourself in different positions, a mat towel, a hand towel, and a strap that will help you stretch out to gently maintain or regain flexibility.

5. A Hip Helper

If you or your loved one are less in need of workout advice and more in need of adaptive equipment that will make everyday tasks and getting around safer and easier, you’ll appreciate this recommendation from occupational therapist, Sarah Stromsdorfer, founder of My OT Spot, an online educational resource for occupational therapy students and practicing occupational therapists working with adults and older adults.
“In my daily practice working in in-patient rehab with many older adults, I frequently recommend the ‘hip kit’ for helping them achieve independence with lower body dressing, including putting on/taking off pants, socks, and shoes,” says Stromsdorfer.

HealthyWay
Amazon

“Older individuals may have limited flexibility reaching down or crossing their legs, so they often rely on others to help them put their clothes on for them. When I show them how to use the hip kit with getting dressed, I’m often met with, ‘Wow, I haven’t been able to do that in so long!’”
Stromsdorfer goes on to say, “Combined with the reacher, long-handled sponge, and long-handled shoehorn, the hip kit is the most helpful aid in achieving dressing independence. It’s so versatile in so many situations, not just after hip surgery. It’s a great feeling helping people achieve independence again with less than $30 of equipment.”

6. For Socks Only

A co-worker whose father recently had hip surgery said this was a game changer, and at under $10 (plus free shipping if you have Amazon Prime), it’s definitely worth a try.

11. Eat independently.

If you or a loved one has Parkinson’s or a tremor, you know mealtime can be one of the most disheartening times of day. Perhaps you’ve found workarounds that are working for now, but it’s nice to know there are high-tech, reliable solutions available if you need them.
The GYENNO Steady Spoon stabilizes itself so whatever attachment you’re using (the company makes both spoon and fork attachments) shakes up to 85 percent less than the diner’s hand. As one reviewer points out, this may not sound like a big deal to someone who isn’t familiar with Parkinson’s, but it is.

HealthyWay

Note that multiple reviewers say the packaging is not easy to get into, so anyone with a tremor may need assistance getting the spoon unwrapped and ready for use the first time around.

Pure Enrichment’s PureRelief XL king size heating pad is fast heating and features six temperature settings. It’s also safe to spritz this heating pad with water to enjoy a moist heat option. The heating pad comes with a storage bag, but no washable cover. Instead, the whole heating pad is machine washable, which we appreciate. 14. Take it from Mass General; this product can help lower stress levels and boost your mood.

According to a study published by Massachusetts General Hospital, your nose knows that scents have a big impact on your mood. The report goes on: “The sense of smell can diminish with age, but you can use essential oils or flowers and spices to stimulate olfactory receptors.”
While electronic essential oil diffusers are all the rage, they also involve cords, water tanks, and just one more thing to be aware of turning on and off. Enter Jewels for Hope’s oil diffuser necklace.
Sandy D’Andrea founded Jewels for Hope in 2009 after almost a decade of providing care for her mother, who struggled with Parkinson’s and dementia. Today, she and her daughter Stevie run the handcrafted jewelry business that donates 10 percent of its profits to charity.

HealthyWay
Etsy

As Stevie shares, “This specific diffuser necklace helps promote relaxation and anti-anxiety, which everyone could use a bit more of. My mother was a caregiver for many years and any way to try to relax and help de-stress was key for her.”
Put a few drops of essential oil on the necklace’s porous lava stone and the calming (or energizing) scent of your choice will be with you throughout the day—nothing high tech required.
The necklace is also a great choice for people with limited hand dexterity because it’s easy on, easy off over your head, “no need to worry about those pesky clasps,” Stevie says. “Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil on the lava stone, and breathe in deep.” Enjoy!

Around the House

15. We could all use a little help in the kitchen.

Jarred foods are a great option that makes mealtime a little more convenient and affordable, whether you have a favorite pasta sauce or like a pickle spear with your sandwich, but lids can be pesky (or downright demeaning) for those with limited grip strength.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Robotwist 1014 is an energy-efficient, battery-powered solution that can be stored in a drawer and used to open jars of any size. Just set your jar on the counter, put the Robotwist on top of the lid, and let the device do the work of opening the jar—no hands (or straining) required.

16. Not sure you need something so high tech?

Even if you don’t need a robot to open your jars for you, it’s still a good idea to have a non-slip gripper within reach for those pesky lids that just won’t budge.

HealthyWay

This rubber lid opener from Graphics and More features a ladybug design that’s sure to put a bright spot in your day. If you’re not a huge fan of ladybugs, Graphics and More also makes a Black Cat in Window non-slip gripper that features a cute feline peeking through the blinds, just as the kitties in your life love to do.

17. A Spill Saver

Bottles of juice and jugs of milk can be hard for anyone to handle, and again, unscrewing small caps isn’t feasible for some people. Thankfully, the Magic Tap can help people of any age pour themselves beverages mess free.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The battery-operated pump prevents drips and spills and features an attachment that fits most containers. If beverages are positioned in the front of the fridge or the door, the Magic Tap eliminates the need to even take them out of the refrigerator, meaning less lifting and maneuvering, too.

According to OXO, the containers are calibrated for common staples like pasta, cereal, and spices, meaning these containers can replace the cardboard boxes and plastic packaging that allow food to go stale faster and be stacked neatly on the counter or in your pantry.

19. Look ma, hands-free!

We all know handwashing is essential in the kitchen and bathroom, but pumping soap out of a dispenser may become a deterrent for a number of reasons. Make handwashing easier, and frankly, more fun, with a hands-free soap dispenser that removes the need to pump and prevents the possibility of a hand soap bottle getting knocked in the sink or on the floor.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This touchless auto soap dispenser from JinZiYi comes with a foldable funnel that facilitates getting soap into the reservoir and features an indicator that will let you know before the battery needs to be replaced. You can choose from three cute colors and four soap volume settings that will allow you to decide if you’d like to save soap or get super sudsy with each hand washing. It even has an LED light that gives off a little glow with each motion-sensor activated pump of goodness.

20. For Those Who Like Extra Whip

No, we’re not talking about the whipped cream on top of a coffee drink; we’re talking about people who’ve gotten accustomed to foaming hand soap. Maybe you love the thought of a touchless soap dispenser but just can’t imagine going back to the liquid hand soap of yore.

While the JinZiYi dispenser works with liquid hand soap only, the Segarty Auto Foam dispenser turns your favorite liquid soap into a rich foam—just mix it with a little water. As with the JinZiYi dispenser, you can determine how much foamy goodness you want to be dispensed with each pump. Finally, this soap dispenser can sit on the countertop or be wall-mounted to save space.

21. Make the bathroom a little safer.

The bathroom can be a scary place, especially when it comes to the risk of slips and falls. At some point, you or a loved one may have to go completely mat free in the bathroom, but even before then, it’s best to ditch floppy woven rugs that can slide across laminate and tile floors.

HealthyWay

Opt instead for a low-profile bath mat alternative. This option from KAROLA comes in nine colorful patterns and has a slip-free rubber backing. It’s recommended for patios and entryways, meaning it’s heavier and more durable than your average bath mat.

24. Something to Light the Way

Christoph Pierre, principal owner at Life Mounts, says he helped develop the company’s wheelchair/walker/cane light to help his aging grandmother see when she used the restroom at night. “It was such a hit that we began mass production several years ago and now sell them on Amazon, Walmart, and 1800Wheelchair as well as in many local pharmacies,” he shares.

He says the product helps improve people’s mobility and safety, day and night. “It fits every model wheelchair, walker, and cane on the market and is quickly mounted and positioned with no tools required. The light has a large orange button that is easily located and pushed, even with arthritic hands.”
If you or a loved one uses a mobility aid to get around at night or in the early morning hours, this is a great investment that can help prevent accidents and injuries.

Fun, Games, and Products That’ll Keep You Connected

27. Enjoy 3.4 million books—all at your fingertips.

According to the American Optometric Association, “Beginning in the early to mid-40s, many adults may start to have problems seeing clearly at close distances, especially when reading and working on the computer.”
This fact of life can make reading less enjoyable, especially as you figure out which readers suit you best. That said, a Kindle e-reader not only gives you access to millions of books on a single, easy-to-manage device, but all those books will be easier on your eyes thanks to the Kindle’s adjustable font size.

HealthyWay

We recommend the Kindle Voyage because, in addition to giving you control over the size of the font you’ll be reading, it features a responsive backlight and Page Press haptic sensors on the sides, which means you don’t have to mess with the screen to get to the next page of your engrossing read.

40 Keto And Gluten-Free Snacks You Can Get From Amazon And Prime Pantry

Hangry and wishing the right snack would just appear for your enjoyment (and the well-being of whatever co-workers, family members, or friends happen to be around when your blood sugar plummets)? Odds are there’s a vending machine, convenience store, or break room just around the corner where snacks are available. Unfortunately, if you’re adhering to a gluten-free or keto diet, those options probably aren’t something you’d be proud of nibbling on.
Of course, depending on your nutritional needs, opting for whatever’s on the communal counter or in the Starbucks case could also pose a serious threat to your health. Luckily, regardless of why you’ve decided to eat gluten-free or keto-friendly, Amazon and Prime Pantry delivery mean these gluten-free and keto-friendly snacks are just one order and a few days away. Stash them at your desk, in the bottom of your purse, or in your little’s diaper bag to ensure you’ve got a snack that aligns with your personal food philosophy and dietary needs whenever hunger strikes.

Something Sweet

1. Treat yourself to something soft and chewy.

A perfectly wrapped caramel is like a little gift to yourself that can be enjoyed any time. You can’t go wrong with caramels when you’re in the mood for something sweet—unless you’re trying to limit your sugar intake, that is. Enter the keto caramel from Tom & Jenny’s.

HealthyWay

Instead of sugar, these caramels get their sweetness from plant-derived maltitol and genetically modified organism (GMO)–free xylitol—a dentist-approved sweetener that can reduce the acidity of your mouth and help prevent cavities and tooth decay. What’s more: They have no artificial colors, preservatives, flavors, or gluten.
It all makes sense, given that Jenny of Tom & Jenny’s is a dentist who believes “good health is the root of happiness.” She and Tom “aspire to create the most mouth-watering bites for people on sugar or carb-restricted diets” and their caramels are just one of many snacks they make with love in the U.S.A.

2. Take a break with a brownie you can make in a cup.

8. If sriracha’s more your style…

9. This spicy snack comes straight from the pumpkin patch.

According to a University of Alaska resource, pumpkin seeds—also called pepitas—are excellent sources of minerals and protein that contain iron, zinc, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids. All of that is to say, this is a snack worth getting behind, whether you’re vegan, g-free, or eating keto-friendly—but especially if you love spicy snacks.

If the flame-covered pumpkin on the package didn’t give it away, here’s your heads up: These gourmet pumpkin seeds are hot. 10. Move over, Chester—there’s a flaming hot (GMO-free) Cheeto alternative in town.

If you’ve ever eaten Flamin’ Hot Cheetos until your fingertips have turned red and you’re panting in anguish (while still wanting just one more), we hear you. Savory Snacks FTW

11. Whether you gravitate toward hummus or are more of a salsa snacker, everyone needs a trusty chip.

Beanitos Black Bean Skinny Dippers are the perfect high-protein, gluten-free, low-carb chips. They contain only five ingredients: whole black beans, long grain rice, pure sunflower oil, tapioca starch, and sea salt, which together work out to 16 percent of your daily fiber and 5 grams of fat per serving for your snacking delight.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Black Bean Skinny Dippers are also GMO-free, vegan, and certified low glycemic, meaning they’ll help you feel full for longer and maintain healthy blood sugar levels regardless of whether you’re eating gluten-free, following a keto-friendly diet, or just after a more filling and well-balanced snack.
Get them from Amazon for $9.59.

12. Like pickles? Here’s a protein-packed on-the-go snack for you.

Pickles come in all different varieties, but we don’t often think of them as a snack in and of themselves. BRAMI is out to change that with its high-protein lupini bean snacks that are…yes…adorable little pouches of pickled beans.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Lupini beans, which BRAMI calls the Mediterranean version of edamame, contain 13.4 grams of plant protein per 100 calories, compared to chia seeds, which contain only 3.4 grams; chickpeas, which contain only 5.4; and even lentils and soybeans, which contain only 7.8 and 8.8 grams of protein, respectively.
While pickled beans may sound a little odd, BRAMI’s lupini bean starter pack, which contains sea salt, garlic and herb, chili lime, and hot pepper bean pouches, has rave reviews on Amazon. In addition to all that protein, they’re vegan, keto-friendly, and contain zero sugar. What’s not to love?
Get them from Amazon for $18.94.

13. Snack on a wild caught fillet.

Fillet is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when you’re rummaging around for a savory snack, but if you like salmon (or smoked maple anything) why not up your snack game with Epic Provisions’ Salmon Fillets?

HealthyWay
Amazon

While it may not be a fillet a la Morton’s, eating fish once or twice a week may reduce the risk of stroke, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and other chronic conditions. These smoked maple strips boast 7 grams of protein and a short and sweet ingredient list that includes wild-caught salmon, real maple sugar, organic coconut oil, sea salt, onion and garlic powder, and dill.

More Than a Snack

30. Sometimes you need a snack that eats like a meal.

Snack time can mean a piece of fruit or bag of crisps—or it can mean a gluten-free, belly-warming curry, thanks to Chef Soraya’s eat-a-bowls. Just add boiling water or pop the bowl-in-one in the microwave and a hearty snack will be yours in minutes.

Even better? Annie’s works with its trusted suppliers to source GMO-free ingredients only and according to their website, “Every yummy bite creates a positive impact.” The company works with FoodCorps to get healthy food to school children, funds grants to support and sustain 395 school gardens (and counting!) and awards scholarships to leaders who are actively developing sustainable farming practices. 10 Dentist-Approved Finds For Your Pearly Whites

Shave my legs. Take a hot shower. Put on lipstick. Wear a really great swimsuit (one-piece please 😬). Curl my hair. Wear heels.
These are just a few of the things that make the HealthyWay gang feel sexy—no bump and grind required.
One of my favorites that I can do essentially anywhere? (Although in a piping hot shower is my fave.) Brushing my teeth. Yes: Scrubbing my pearly whites, gargling with just the right mouthwash, spitting with abandon, and running my tongue between my just-brushed-teeth and upper lip will have me saying Ahh every time. It’s an instant ego boost, whether it’ll be followed by the commute to work or a makeout sesh.
Oral care is a matter of personal pride for me. I’ve never had a cavity, and come on—doesn’t the thought of a minty-fresh kiss put a little pep in your step?
Taking good care of your teeth, tongue, and beyond isn’t what we typically think of when we clear our calendars for #selfcare, but I love shopping for oral care products and putting them to good use, especially when they’re eco-friendly or come from companies that are doing their part to make the world (and my mouth) a better place.

But First: Don’t genetics determine who’s enjoying the cavity-free life?

According to Oksana Boyechko, DMD, of Shingle Springs Dental, “Genetics can certainly play a role in determining a person’s likelihood to develop any number of health issues. But when it comes to oral health, as much as we’d like to believe it’s out of our control, genetics isn’t as significant to our oral health as the way we treat our gums and teeth over a lifespan.”
She goes on to say, “Daily habits like brushing and flossing, and the foods and beverages we choose to eat, have the highest probability of determining whether we develop tooth decay or periodontal disease.”
Here’s what Boyechko and another ladyboss dentist, Samantha Rawdin, DMD, a prosthodontist with Gallery57 Dental in NYC, think of my favorite finds (plus the alternatives Rawdin recommends for the picks that aren’t exactly what the doctor would order).

1. A Toothbrush Made From…Yogurt Cups

I discovered Preserve’s “Made with LOVE and recycled yogurt cups” toothbrushes during a leisurely Trader Joe’s stroll and am completely smitten with them. Of course I appreciate that they make use of waste, but beyond that, the streamlined design is aesthetically appealing (I’m not a fan of bionic-looking toothbrushes with seemingly unnecessary bells and whistles), and Preserve is a B Corp that makes its products in the U.S.
The brush features a curved handle for “those hard-to-reach places,” and based on my experience, it really works. That said, I’ve always been a medium bristle kinda gal. So what are the dentists’ thoughts on this pick?
Rawdin says, “Honestly, any toothbrush that will remove plaque is good in my book. I tend to steer away from recommending anything other than soft toothbrushes for my patients as I find that harder toothbrushes tend to cause more gum recession.” This is the official stance of the American Dental Association, too, but Rawdin says if gum recession hasn’t been an issue for me, I can stick with what works. The good news for everyone? Preserve makes soft and ultra soft toothbrushes, too.
“I also love that Preserve uses recycled plastic—good for your teeth AND the environment!” says Rawdin.
Already a fan of another type of toothbrush? Boyechko recommends switching it up:

When patients are trying to decide between different toothbrushes, like a manual one versus an electric brush or a variety of brush shapes, I like to say you don’t have to pick just one brush. You can vary it up every day, like using a manual brush in the morning and an electric one at night, and even change the brush head every other week if you’d like. That way you’ll ensure you’re getting all the advantages from the different toothbrushes, rather than feel like you’re limiting yourself to just one style.

If you haven’t tried a Preserve brush yet, go for it! They’re very reasonably priced (we’re talking under $3) and you’ll feel good about your purchase—just be sure to reach for one that’s soft or ultra soft so the experience is nice for your gums, too.

2. Toothpaste With a Dash of Blue Green Algae

My sister, Emersyn D., a healthcare design strategist who’s en route to becoming a physician assistant (and is five years a vegan) turned me onto JĀSÖN products a number of years ago. JĀSÖN’s code of honor promises wholesome, effective products that are free from parabens, phthalates, harsh sulfates, and artificial colors and are never tested on animals.
[related article_ids=1005850]
JĀSÖN’s parent company, Hain Celestial, has also paired with CARE to help fund an afterschool program for girls in rural Guatemala, meaning purchasing toothpaste from their lineup contributes to something even bigger than self-care.
So—which of their flavors is my favorite? I’ve been jamming on Sea Fresh Anti-Cavity & Strengthening Gel in Deep Sea Spearmint, which contains blue green algae, aloe vera gel, spearmint and parsley extracts, and (ding, ding, ding! we have a winner!) fluoride.
Rawdin’s take?

This is not a toothpaste I have tried myself, but I am a fan of JĀSÖN products and the fact that it contains fluoride is really all I need to know! Your toothpaste absolutely should contain fluoride. I know this can be a controversial topic, but fluoride is the number one reason the cavity rate has decreased in the U.S. There are no scientific studies to support that fluoride has any adverse effects when used appropriately, but there IS overwhelming evidence as to its benefit. The addition of CoQ10, algae, and aloe have no proven benefit, but certainly won’t hurt the teeth.

JĀSÖN does offer an impressive array of fluoride-free toothpastes, but don’t miss out on all that tooth-strengthening goodness when you can choose from three fluoridated options: Tea Tree Oil & Cinnamon, Powerful Peppermint, and of course my fave, Deep Sea Spearmint.

3. Mouthwash Formulated With Spearmint Oil and Grapefruit Seed Extract

Do you derive inexplicable pleasure from purchasing matching products? Me too, which is why my mouthwash-of-the-moment is also from JĀSÖN.
Sea Fresh Strengthening Sea Spearmint Mouthwash—which includes grapefruit seed and perilla seed extracts—tastes refreshingly mojito-like. Plus, the tube of toothpaste and matching mouthwash bottle look so cute together!
I’ve used JĀSÖN’s Total Protection Sea Salt Mouth Rinse in Cool Mint in the past, but it was a bit too salty for my liking. The Sea Spearmint variety is the perfect alternative: minty enough to remind us of the Listerine that Mom and Dad might’ve used during our childhoods, but decidedly more wholesome feeling, given the citrus notes and alcohol-free formulation.
[products ids=’1078158,1078161′ type=full]

4. Something Bubbly

I used to have an epic soda habit (we’re talking a pack a day at its worst), but thanks to the advent of naturally flavored sparkling waters being sold in cans everywhere, I’ve been able to leave my soda chugging days behind me.
My current faves are LaCroix apricot (the moscato of sparkling waters) and Original New York Seltzer watermelon (sweet summertime, summertime in a can). A bottle of S.Pellegrino with dinner never hurt anyone either. But are sparkling water options really that much better than soda for our teeth?
Rawdin shares some interesting information:

These are fine, but ideally should be drunk only at meal times. The reason being the sodium bicarbonate that makes the bubbles in the drinks actually makes these beverages acidic. So, if you’re sipping on them all day long, you’re constantly exposing your teeth to acid, which can slowly erode the enamel—the hard, white outer layer of your teeth—over time.

Sweetener free: good. Nursing my non-alcoholic bubbly from after-my-coffee o’clock to EOD: something to reconsider.

5. More on Bubbles

Or, gum, that is. While I grew up on sticks of Fruit Stripe and mouthfuls of grape Bubble Yum, 2018 finds me devoted to peppermint Ice Breakers Ice Cubes. (Though the summer snow cone glitter gum—yes you read that right—limited edition is worth a Target run, too.)
Is this the best gum, though, or would my teeth appreciate a different pick?
“If you’re going to chew gum, make sure it’s sugar-free, like this one,” says Rawdin. “Ice Breakers actually contains xylitol, as do many of the others sugar-free gums on the market. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol sweetener which actually helps to prevent cavities.”
Rawdin says she tries to steer clear of gum that contains aspartame as a sweetener. “Anything with the ADA seal of approval—gum, toothbrushes, toothpaste, et cetera—is always a safe bet.”
Touchdown 🙌

6. A Trusty Water Bottle

The U.S. cavity rate hasn’t decreased because of fluoridated oral care products alone. In many areas, tap water is fluoridated too, which means a trusty reusable water bottle will allow you to treat yourself to refreshing sips that are good for your teeth while minimizing the waste associated with single-use water bottles.
Rawdin says the amount of fluoride in tap water is “low enough to not affect you systemically, even if you’re drinking a lot of water during the day, but just a few parts per million of fluoride in the water is enough to help protect your teeth.”
“Plus,” she says, “drinking water helps to keep your mouth hydrated. A dry mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria and can cause cavities to arise much more quickly.”
My on-the-go go-to is my Contigo Autoseal West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug in Polar White (of course). I’ve clicked the lock into place and tossed this trusty mug in my purses and backpacks many times over the past year and never experienced a leak. Note that the vacuum seal mechanism in the lid can be unlatched and dishwashed, while the mug itself has to be washed by hand.
To find out if the water in your area is fluoridated, check out this handy map from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And if your water isn’t fluoridated, Rawdin says you should be sure your toothpaste and mouthwash are.

7. Time to Strip

Not that kind of stripping! Unless you want to, in which case, go for it knowing you can do pretty much whatever after applying Crest Whitestrips: another one of my favorite finds.
I love to get my sparkle on when I have a special event or vacay coming up. Of this pick, Rawdin says:

These are very effective and safe. The biggest risk to using these or any whitening product is residual sensitivity. Typically the sensitivity is short lived and any over-the-counter pain killer will help. There are also whitening methods that your dentist can provide for you which tend to work a bit more quickly, such as an in office whitening session or custom whitening trays. The best option will depend on your budget and what fits best with your lifestyle.

8. A Handy Floss Alternative

Don’t forget to floss!—the battle cry of many a dentist, I’m sure. My dirty little secret? As much as I love brushing my teeth, I’ve always hated flossing. It feels eternally clumsy, and I’ve never developed a regular flossing routine.
That said, I am a huge fan of Plackers—even more so now that I know they’re recyclable (though, as a Plackers team member says, “We would suggest asking your local municipality regarding how to properly prepare flosser picks to make them acceptable for pick up as the bags and the flossers are composed of different materials”).
While some dentists are adamant that flossing is far superior to using Plackers, Rawdin says,

These are great, especially for patients who don’t like using string/ribbon floss! One is not better than the other, but you do need to work a little harder with the Plackers to achieve the same benefit as regular floss. The goal is to get the floss on either side of the little triangle of tissue between the teeth and to hug the floss against the tooth to clean out the small space between the tooth and the gum.

So, instead of Placker shaming, let’s embrace using them the right way so we can take advantage of an affordable and recyclable option that’s here to make oral care a little easier.

9. A Brand New Retainer

My sis and I both endured the American rite of passage that is having braces. I wore my clear retainer faithfully until it cracked a few years ago (admittedly it was looking worse for the wear way before that). I decided to get a Hawley retainer—one of the metal and acrylic ones (blue sparkles FTW) that will last for ages but potentially cost you more than $500 even if you have dental insurance, since orthodontic care typically isn’t covered for members over 18.
Emersyn says she settled on new clear retainers after exploring a number of options. “My teeth have shifted over the years due to not wearing the retainers faithfully and ultimately losing them. A few front teeth are more crooked than I would like, and I later learned that my midline and bite had also shifted. I had seen ads for Smile Direct Club and looked into their plans, but I was wary of doing something orthodontic via mailer boxes, plus I was going to have to get a small permanent retainer behind my front two teeth removed to do it.”
“I then went to an orthodontist and she said I would be a good candidate for Invisalign. I had a consultation and received pricing for an Invisalign package, but it was way out of my budget as a young professional, especially knowing I was about to return to school,” she shares. “I asked about retainers to hold my teeth in place for the time being. The two options were metal and plastic or clear plastic. The metal and plastic has a longer lifespan but was far more expensive, so I opted for the clear plastic retainers. These have a lifespan of about a year and I believe they were $50 each, which I paid out of pocket.”
Rawdin says, “I see at least a couple patients a week with this issue!”
While she notes that Invisalign or Smile Direct Club are good options if you want your teeth to be straightened, she says a new retainer is the perfect option if you’re looking to maintain the position of your teeth and prevent them from moving in the future.
Retainer lost or looking less than hygienic? Talk to your dentist or orthodontist about an investment that’s right for your budget and will keep your teeth right where you want them to be.

10. A Good “Tung” Scraper

This pick is from my sis and is one that I look forward to trying in the future, especially because it comes from a company that uses only natural ingredients (“mostly wildcrafted and organic”), demonstrates a long-term commitment to sourcing recyclable and biodegradable materials, and has “strong ethical values: Ethical & honest, cruelty-free, no child labor, no discrimination.”
“The tongue scraper I use is Dr. Tung’s,” Emersyn says. She purchased it at a local herbs and supplements store after trying a copper tongue scraper that rusted almost immediately.
“I’ve had the Dr. Tung’s scraper for about six months now and love it. I became curious about tongue scraping when I was reading about different Ayurvedic remedies and looking into oil pulling. I scrape my tongue once a day after brushing my teeth at night. I love that the tongue scraper helps get rid of bad breath and aftertastes. It makes my mouth feel a lot cleaner.”
Rawdin says, “Cleaning your tongue is an important step in your oral hygiene routine, however, you don’t need a fancy tongue scraper. You can just use your toothbrush to clean the coating that can form on your tongue containing plaque and bacteria. If not removed, it can often cause bad breath.”
If a patient uses a tongue scraper, Rawdin says she certainly doesn’t discourage it, and she shares these tongue-scraper tips:

  • Tongue scrapers can be used once a day to remove the discolored coating that can form on the tongue.
  • A few sweeps with the scraper should do the trick.
  • You don’t want to apply too much pressure, because you can cause bleeding and superficial damage to the surface of the tongue, which will heal but will be a little tender in the meantime.

“A warning, though,” Rawdin says, “if there’s a coating on the tongue that does not come off with gentle pressure or there is bleeding when the coating is removed, be sure to see your dentist. These signs can be an indication that something else may be going on.”
Whether you opt for a Dr. Tung’s scraper or choose to clean your tongue with your sweet new Preserve toothbrush, here’s to feeling your sexiest, whether you’re flossin’, smoothing on a White Strip, or sipping on tap water to keep those pearly whites shining bright like diamonds.

We Can’t Get Enough Of @jvn And Queer Eye (And Why All The Binge-Watching Is In Order)

If your workplace or ladygang is as connected by Slack, Microsoft Teams, or group text as we are, you know the sheer delight that is implementing a new, on-trend emoji. Last week’s gift to HealthyWay HQ: a Jonathan Van Ness (aka JVN) emoji created by our graphic designer Alyssa Pearson.
Of course, those of you who love Queer Eye as much as Alyssa, our Editor-in-Chief Ashley Murry, Senior Lifestyle Editor Maggie Tyson, and MD/influencer Elyse Love (who counts Queer Eye among her favorite shows) get the importance of a tiny glyph that features a delightfully surprised (and sweatered) JVN radiating against a bubblegum pink background.
HealthyWay
My binge-watching, on the other hand, revolves around SATC (aka the wind beneath my wings) and E.R. (whose last season has definitely left me in deep winter depressions that I welcomed like a martyr in the name of seeing John Carter’s maturation through to its bittersweet end). All that to say, I’m a Queer Eye outsider who needed to know what all the celebration and good feels are about—STAT.
So, whether you started watching Queer Eye as a gangly tween circa 2003 and have powered through Seasons 1 and 2 of the 2018 reboot (plus the “Yass Australia!” special) or are feeling tempted to run a @jvn Google search to determine what the heck we’re talking about, read on. Ashley Murry and life coaches Sharon Roemmel and Jenny Giblin weigh in on Queer Eye’s cultural relevance and how binge-watching the right shows (for the right reasons) can lift us up and serve as a powerful act of self-care.
But first: a quick QE introduction/timeline for those who are completely unfamiliar with the show:

After the Emoji

Immediately after our 2D Jonathan talisman joined us in Slack, I reached out to Ashley, Sharon, and Jenny to get the scoop on some of the things they think Queer Eye does well, and they’re not just for those receiving the Fab Five makeovers.
Sharon, a certified life coach, registered yoga teacher, and licensed massage therapist (who shares that she’s a lesbian, “although”—her words—“not certified” 😂) says she loves Queer Eye and thinks the show’s appeal comes from two things:

We see ourselves in the weekly guests. We relate when Tom on episode one says, “You can’t fix ugly.” Whether our own moments include feeling ugly, too fat, too skinny, not well-dressed, too shy, not smart enough, or some other perceived failing, we let those moments limit us. As we connect with the guests’ lack of belief in themselves and then watch their transformations, we can see what’s possible for us. We see that we, too, are worthy. We could update our wardrobes, learn a few skills in the kitchen, and get rid of that pile of magazines to begin shifting our lives for the better.
The second appeal relates to the feel-good nature of seeing others shine. In an era where people feel free to say cruel things to others both online and in person, where violence and harm are perpetrated every day, it feels good to see strangers lift someone up. The show reminds us that when we see the best in others, they do shine.

Jenny, a trained therapist and life coach who lives in Hawaii and rarely ever watches TV, is also a huge fan of Queer Eye. “After watching the very first episode of Queer Eye with a friend who was visiting, I was moved to tears and it instantly replaced Keeping up with the Kardashians as my new favorite show,” she shares. “I instantly downloaded Netflix and proceeded to watch the entire two seasons over the course of the next few days—and cried during almost every single episode.”
Jenny says Queer Eye can—without putting it into words—expose us to the following very important (and empowering) ideas:

1. The power of deep transformation comes from within. You can take anyone and use the right tools to help get them from who they are now to who they want to be, but that deep willingness to change has to come from within.
2. The most powerful experiences that can heal and change us come from the bond we have with the person guiding us, and the power of human connection.

“You can tell from watching Queer Eye that every single cast member on there feels some kind of love or actually genuinely cares about the person they are working with,” Jenny says, going on to share that based on her professional experiences, “the number one predictor of whether or not therapy will be effective is based on the connection between the therapist and the client.”
In the case of Queer Eye, she believes the reason that the outcomes of the Fab Fives’ makeovers are so impressive is the connection between each client and cast member. Takeaway: Who you surround yourself with and choose to learn from can make all the difference.
Jenny also highlights two more Queer Eye ideas that really resonate with us:

3. Our style and our environment, and how we take care of it and use it to reflect how we feel and our true sense of self, is so important, but this can be easy to lose sight of during times of stress, or just over time, especially when we lose sight of valuing ourselves, or feeling not good enough, or just from taking care of others and focusing on our to-do lists or responsibilities.
4. We were not always taught how important or necessary it is sometimes to put ourselves first, or to take care of ourselves so we can take care of others and be the best versions of ourselves—or how we were meant to live an amazing life.

These are things we can learn, and Jenny believes Queer Eye reminds us and gives us permission to give ourselves the self-care we need, “along with the tools and inspiration you need to bring that into your own life while you cheer others along.”
Ashley reaffirms Jenny’s points in reflecting on why Queer Eye has had such a positive impact on her, sharing that Queer Eye “shows that what’s on the outside can impact what we feel on the inside.”
She believes it gives people—women especially—the freedom to explore outward expressions of beauty if they feel compelled to. “It’s not about the clothes or the new haircuts, but how those simple changes can often give us the opportunity to see ourselves in a new light. It’s a major nod to self-care.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BkFv7XvFW4K/
These self-care, feel-good points alone are enough to get us feeling warm-hearted and proactive, but it’s Ashley and Sharon’s discussion of Queer Eye’s power to expose and heal certain realities we all live with that can really take our appreciation of what the Fab Five, the show’s producers, and Netflix are doing to the next level.

Talking About the “Queer” in Queer Eye

Queer Eye 2.0, like the Bravo series before it, is a show about gay men who, save the first episode of Season 2 when they make over Tammye, are making over men. So, beyond espousing self-care and encouraging us to prioritize relationships with people who really want to support us as we blossom into our true selves, how does it benefit women?
If you’re ingesting current event media or scrolling through social media, you’ve seen the mean-spirited them-versus-us articles, posts, and comments. Feel-good shows like Queer Eye that highlight diversity can act as an antidote to that polarization and negativity,” says Sharon, who goes on:

It can be easy to forget in this era where gender diversity makes the news daily that many of us were raised in a soup of homophobia or by parents who simmered in that soup. Calling someone a lesbian or a fag was an insult to be feared when I was growing up in the ’60s and ’70s.
Even in this era of gay marriage, our homophobic history colors our beliefs and thoughts about people who identify as LGBT. When we join the Fab Five for one of their makeovers, we get to see some of the diversity in the gay community and some of our outdated beliefs can more easily slip away.

These points resonate with Ashley, who says Queer Eyeexposes us to the often overlooked variety that exists in every lifestyle and sexual orientation. You have Jack, who is feminine and very comfortable in that expression of femininity; you have Antoni, who is much more quiet and reserved. Karamo is a broad black man you may not have guessed was gay—my very point. Tan was raised Muslim and is married to a Mormon man. This is just such a refreshing reminder to explore more of the intricacies of humanhood and a reminder that none of us should confine ourselves to any standard because of a larger label.”
Sharon says that while watching Queer Eye, “we remember that we are more alike than different as we find common ground. By watching others accept their emotions in a supportive and uplifting environment, we can also begin to do the same in our own lives. We see possibilities for caring, healing, and connecting and hopefully take action.”

More on the Medicine

Extracting the show’s production from New York and filming in Georgia (and, for Season 3, Kansas City, Missouri) implies a new element of diversity for Queer Eye as the Fab Five interact with fewer cosmopolitans and more lifelong residents of Middle America. As Ashley points out, “The conversations they have with people from very different walks of life show, with each episode, that we are all far more similar than we are different. And it’s beautiful.”
Finally, as Ashley says, “The show shines light on men showing emotion. Nearly every episode shows the person who is being made over crying or having some sort of emotional breakthrough. This display of emotion is often unexpected coming from men. Society looks to them to be the heroes. It’s such an important example for the next generation of men that they be allowed to show emotion.”
This can also be medicine for women watching Queer Eye, who, let’s be honest, could use some confirmation that men face many of the same fears we do and are capable of tapping into emotions that are just as raw and vulnerable as those we experience when it comes to #metoo, the wage gap, and facing whatever body image issues we’ve developed as symptoms of living in a society that promotes countless unattainable ideals.

So, is binge-watching all bad?

When we think about self-care, binge-watching isn’t necessarily up there on our mental lists of valid pursuits. In fact, we’ve probably all betrayed our own shame when responding to “What’d you do this weekend?” with “Managed to watch three seasons of [insert your show of choice] in under 48 hours without getting up more than a handful of times for powder room breaks and snacks (because vitamin D and showers are optional).”
That said, Sharon, who says TV watching doesn’t typically make her top-ten self-care list, agrees with Ashley and Jenny that “watching a show like Queer Eye can be an act of self-care, especially in context to our current culture.” Remember what she said about all that mean-spirited stuff many of us see on social media? Indulging in a show like Queer Eye—and a little quiet time that doesn’t involve scrolling—might just be an antidote (but not the antidote).

A post shared by Queer Eye (@queereye) on

Sharon’s tips for knowing when binge-watching has crossed a line into a sedentary, emotionally unhealthy behavior:

If you use a show like Queer Eye to numb or check out from your life while staying stuck, then you aren’t practicing self-care. If binge watching leaves you with a high that moves you into warm fuzzy feelings and ready to clean up your own life, then go for it. But if you find yourself numb, binge eating, or feeling worse about yourself, then walk away from the screen. Even if you feel uplifted, but find yourself staying stuck, you might want to take a binge break.

Need to peel yourself off the couch? Why not get some JVN-to-go from his Getting Curious podcast? (I’m listening to the September 2016 episode with plus-size/curve model Denis Bidot right now and it’s 👌.)

How To Make A Frittata

Frittata is an easy and elegant dish that can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and even makes for great protein-packed leftovers that can be served hot or cold.

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 Tbsp. grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup asparagus, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1 cup peas
  • ¼ cup chopped scallions
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Special Equipment

  • Cast iron pan
  • Wooden spoon or rubber spatula
  • Silicone brush

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Crack the eggs into a bowl and beat until well combined.
  3. Mix in the heavy cream and parmesan cheese.
  4. Salt and pepper the egg mixture to taste.
  5. Add the filling ingredients (asparagus, peas, scallions, and provolone cheese) to the egg mixture.
  6. Mix until well combined.
  7. Grease your cast iron pan (using a silicone brush will ensure an even coating—see tips on which oil to use and what to avoid below!).
  8. Pour the egg mixture into your cast iron pan.
  9. Use a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to smooth the top of the egg mixture (an even depth will ensure even cooking throughout).
  10. Bake your frittata at 350° F for 25 to 35 minutes.
  11. When the eggs are set, remove it from the oven.
  12. Cut and serve.

Tips for Nailing the Perfect Frittata From 6 Culinary Pros

“Oh, the frittata! Just like the egg itself, there are literally hundreds of ways to make them, but not all are equal!” This frittata insight comes from Ken Immer, president and chief culinary officer of Culinary Health Solutions, who goes on to say, “The most important thing about the vessel, in my opinion, is that it should be heavy-duty enough so that it can be heated very hot so as to make a fabulous crust that doesn’t burn or stick to the pan.”
Chef J Jackson, aka Mr. Foodtastic—a private chef, speaker, caterer, and author— says a cast iron skillet is the ideal vessel for making frittata because it circulates heat well.
Your skillet will have to be greased quite liberally according to Immer, but he cautions against the quick and easy spray of Pam that might be your go-to. Why? It will burn almost instantly at the high heat that’s required to make a frittata, which will result in an unappealing aftertaste. Instead, opt for a minimum of one tablespoon of sunflower oil (or two if you’re using a particularly large pan).
Quick tip: If you don’t have a cast iron pan or would rather skip the hassle of cutting perfect portions, ladle your egg mixture into a muffin tin. Certified nutritional chef Melissa Eboli says, “Frittatas and frittata muffins are some of my signature dishes. I don’t only serve them up for brunch, but they are a popular item as appetizer selections for my events.”
When it comes to filling ingredients, registered dietician Amanda Baker Lemein of FEED Nutrition Consulting in Chicago says, “The more non-starchy vegetables, the better! These are filled with fiber, water, and many micronutrients, plus they add flavor and color.” Take Baker Lemein’s advice, and amp up your filling ingredient game by folding mushrooms or stem vegetables into your egg mixture.
Committed to reducing food waste? So are Rebecca Elbaum, clinical administrative dietitian at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, and Claudia Sidoti, head chef and recipe Developer for HelloFresh. According to Elbaum, “Frittatas are an excellent way to clean out the fridge. You can really fill them with anything you have around!” She likes to use spinach, tomatoes, and feta cheese, or black beans, corn, and cheddar cheese as filling ingredients.
Sidoti has another interesting idea. “One of my favorites is a pasta and veggie frittata where egg is used as the primary source of protein while it’s also the binder. It’s a great way to use up leftover pasta, too.”
Whether you’re making a vegetarian frittata or opt to add meat, ensure your filling ingredients are fully cooked, not raw, and are drained well. Uncooked veggies will still be crunchy when your eggs are set, and adding soggy veggies or greasy sausage crumbles can compromise the texture of your frittata.
Ready to serve your frittata? Jackson says you should loosen the sides by guiding a clean knife around its edges. “It should be very easy. Put a plate on top of the skillet. Place a hand on top and flip over. Saying a prayer prior sometimes helps!”
We suggest garnishing your frittata with homegrown herbs or edible flowers like chive blossoms that will pair well with its savory flavors.

How to Make a Frittata-Centric Meal

Elbaum says she likes to serve frittatas with a carb for a complete meal. Her go-tos? “A slice of whole wheat toast, mini bagel with avocado, or breakfast potatoes.”
Looking for something on the lighter (or more portable) side? Consider pairing a slice of frittata with a green smoothie for a meal that balances sweet and savory while including all the macronutrients you need.

Michelle Williams’ Post Has HealthyWay HQ Talking Mental Health And Therapy

This morning, HealthyWay’s video content strategist reached out to a group of ladies at HealthyWay HQ to ask if we could participate in a video shoot to promote our new community, the HealthyWay Collective. Am I available? Yes, and I also know the team produces gorgeous, attention-grabbing videos on sets that have a reputation for being super fun.
That said, I declined in the group message, explaining that I’m having a really hard time seeing myself on film right now. In fact, a few months ago when I saw a picture of myself in a HealthyWay IG story, I wound up lying in bed crying about it until I dozed off. I hated the way I looked and couldn’t wait for the story to expire. Thinking about having a GIF, or any picture of myself, for that matter, up on the whimsical (and wonderful!) About Us page was making me feel sick and keeping me up at night. I ultimately opted out and am using a selfie from two summers ago as my headshot. I don’t hate every picture of myself, but I can find something wrong with most of them, and yes, shying away from the camera, disliking outfit after outfit on many mornings, and feeling not sexy much of the time is taking a toll on my mental health and well-being.
[related article_ids=1005548]
Fessing up to the situation in my therapist’s office and stomaching the shock of hearing, “That’s some serious body dysmorphia,” from someone I’ve been working with closely for over a year was hard. It felt like hearing, “Oh? One more thing that’s wrong with you!” But at the same time, it brought the gravity of my experience into focus and gave me the courage to tell my co-workers why I wouldn’t be at the video shoot rather than B.S.ing a reason why I couldn’t participate or just saying “no thanks” and leaving everyone wondering (i.e., contributing to the radio silence about about mental health that leaves so many of us feeling stigmatized when our needs and experiences come to light).
Ironically, while I was processing the fact that I’d just shared something relatively intimate in lieu of a generic, “Yes, I’m available Friday—see you there,” Destiny’s Childs’ Michelle Williams’ post about seeking out therapy was trending, with TMZ, ABC News, and even PEOPLE covering the story.

So, we’re talking about it openly and honestly (even the not-wanting-to-talk part).

This got us talking—not in the “Eek, I just dropped an awkward bomb that might’ve been completely TMI for co-workers” way, but very openly—about our struggles to seek out and keep up with therapy for the sake of our mental health.
[pullquote align=”center”]”Picking up the phone is hard when you are struggling.”[/pullquote]
While I’ve been seeing a therapist regularly and participating in group therapy—which has been truly life-changing for me—for over a year, the experiences of the ladies in the office are just as varied as those of our readers. Our discussion touched on significant challenges, from figuring out where to get started (especially if you’re new in town) to the feeling that our struggles are not “bad enough” to warrant therapy.
[related article_ids=23400]
And then there’s the challenge of staying in therapy rather than, as one of our editors put it, “ghosting on your therapist for the third time in a row,” which, let’s be honest, is tempting when there are a ton of of other things that need to be done and a pretty good chance that ugly, uncomfortable stuff will come to the fore that we’d rather deal with later—or never.

We realized we’re not alone—and neither are you.

All that said, sharing our experiences like Williams not only helps us get real and heal, but paves the way for others to get the care they need and feel supported even if they haven’t found the sanctuary of the right therapist’s office just yet. As one co-worker put it, “Realizing you’re not alone and figuring out how to get over that hurdle to get yourself into a therapist or psychiatrist are really difficult concepts if you struggle with mental health … Picking up the phone is hard when you are struggling.”
Another shares that realizing you’re not alone was a big factor for her personally and says that she can see how celebrities being open about mental health can be powerful for other women. While money and success don’t guarantee happiness, it is great to see women using their platforms and influence to get conversations about mental health and treatment going.

But what’s next?

We’re asking ourselves how we can continue prioritizing self-care while reaching out to and supporting others. Could online therapy, better understanding the symptoms of panic attacks and depression, or learning new breathing techniques be right for you? Today we’re taking cues from Williams and other celebrities, including office faves Kristen Bell and Lili Reinhart, and working with what we’ve got to get imperative conversations about mental health—and our treatment options—going.

Amazon Prime Day, The Healthy Way (And The Other Sales That Invite You To #treatyoself Today)

If you love receiving packages full of goodies you selected specifically for…you (and you have an Amazon Prime membership), then you’re probably just as excited about Amazon Prime Day as we are.
But balancing the desire for a little something new at a steal of a price can conflict with our best intentions of being conscious consumers, especially as some of us aim for minimalism, are rocking capsule wardrobes, and want to make more space for meditation and mindfulness instead of “stuff.”
Here’s how the ladies of HealthyWay HQ plan to make the most of Prime Day, without breaking the bank amassing unnecessary clutter that’ll be collecting dust come Prime Day 2019.

Audible

Editor-in-Chief Ashley is already an Audible subscriber, but she loves it enough to recommend that readers (or listeners?) take the plunge on Prime Day, when you can save a whopping 66 percent on a three-month membership.
Be aware that membership will renew at the full rate of $14.95/month after the first three months, but rather than letting this scare you off, celebrate the great deal you’ll be getting—and the books, audioshows, news, and comedy that can enrich your life between now and October without you having to turn a single page.

KitchenAid Stand Mixer (aka Kitchen Goals)

Does any piece of kitchen equipment say My (culinary) best self has arrived quite like KitchenAid’s iconic stand mixer? No, ma’am.
Elevate your mixing game (and kitchen aesthetic) with the Professional 5-Qt. model STAT.

Echo Dot

Maggie’s response to the question “What’re you lusting after this Prime Day?”: “I want another Amazon Dot. I only have one, but I want moooore.”
At $29.99 (yes, that’s a 40 percent discount), it’s easy to imagine calling the shots, jamming to your Spotify playlists, and getting info on demand with this handy device that’ll have you feeling like the queen of your castle day in and day out.

“Get it right, get it tight.”

I’m not taking any beauty cues from Bubba Sparxxx, but when Ashley and Maggie both recommend the same retinol moisturizer as a Prime Day treat, this girl perks up. Ashley says she uses very few products on her face (same here), but that she enjoys Baebody’s retinol moisturizing cream, which leaves her face feeling just a little more taut when she wakes up in the morning.
The cream is formulated with plant-derived hyaluronic acid, wildcrafted green tea, organic jojoba oil, vitamin E, vitamin B5, and shea butter, which will have fans of plant products and organics rockin’ everywhere.

Kindle

You know what goes great with a glass of wine and 20 minutes to yourself finally after a long day (or the beach, a long flight, or a park bench)? Silence and the company of a good book—or all 3.4 million of the e-books available through the Amazon Kindle, which you can get at a deep discount on Prime Day.
Not sure where to begin with your reading regimen? We suggest referring to our list of 18 life-changing books that every woman needs to read (on her brand new, 33 percent–off Kindle Paperwhite).

Athletic Apparel and Shoes

Sweet, sweet Scottish singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini gets it all right when he belts out, “Hey, I put my new shoes on and suddenly everything’s right!” New shoes elevate your everyday game—especially your athleisure getups. And on Prime Day, women’s athletic wear and shoes are up to 50 percent off.
Maggie’s favorite Prime Day pair? These adidas Cloudfoam Sneakers that’ll have you walking on sunshine.

Coconut Oil–Enhanced Biotin

Want to do right by your locks? A good first step is understanding your hair type and treating your hair accordingly. Next up: Give your mane a little TLC by incorporating biotin into your regimen.
I love that Sports Research’s High Potency 5000 mcg biotin is vegan- and vegetarian-friendly as it’s encapsulated in veggie softgels rather than the gelatin ones many of us choose to avoid.

Groceries

Yes, you read that right. This year, for the first time ever, Whole Foods is getting in on the Prime Day bonanza. Prime members can spend $10 in store today and tomorrow and will get $10 to spend on Amazon during Prime Day (for those candles, am I right?). Just scan your Prime Code or use your mobile number at the Whole Foods in-store checkout.
Not sure what to stock up on? How about the ingredients required to whip up some stuffed peppers or an armful of nutrient-packed stem vegetables?

Amazon Handmade

Amazon Handmade is almost too good to be true. I was a complete Etsy nut in a past life, and Amazon Handmade combines all the goodness of genuinely handcrafted goods with the Prime shipping I’ve already bought into (because: all the things I can’t get locally and Sex and the City on Prime Video).
The Amazon Handmade products I’m after this Prime Day? Little Bee of Connecticut’s hand-rolled beeswax pillar candles. I like to burn both candles and sage in my meditation space, and I love that these pillars (which Little Bee offers in 6 inch and 8 inch sizes), are natural, non-toxic, sustainable, and renewable as they don’t contain any petroleum byproducts like the paraffin most candles are made of. Plus, few things are as soothing as the smell of an unscented beeswax candle or the gentle light it emits.
Bonus: With the Prime Day discount, these candles are cheaper than comparable beeswax container candles I’ve come across at T.J.Maxx, and they’re packaged in recyclable paper, so there’s none of the awkwardness of deciding what to do with a waxy, lidless container after your candle’s flickered its last.

Essential Oil Everything

I nabbed a few Aura Cacia essential oil blends last week (Chill Pill ftw) but have yet to get an essential oil diffuser. Senior Editor Maggie recommends this lovely teardrop-shaped cool mist diffuser from TaoTronics that is home and baby safe.
Read up on the basics of using essential oils before you get started, or take a deep dive into our guide for using essential oils to treat seasonal allergies.

A Not-So-Slow Cooker

I scream, you scream, we all scream for something delicious to eat every 👏 single 👏 day—even workdays when there’s no time for cooking said delicious dishes. Enter the Instant Pot, slow cooker extraordinaire.
You place the Prime order; we’ve got you covered with all the Instant Pot details and a delicious recipe to get you started as soon as your Prime Day package drops.

Meal prep like a pro.

  • Instant Pot ✔️
  • Stand Mixer ✔️
  • All the groceries from Whole Foods ✔️

Now you just need to store all that delicious goodness in an organized, aesthetically pleasing fashion (that’ll have you celebrating your leftover meals as opposed to lamenting #saddesklunches).
Enter Vremi’s 18 piece glass food storage container set. Stackable, airtight, BPA-free, microwave, oven, and freezer safe: All these descriptors are music to our nosh-loving ears.

Not a Prime member?

No need to fret. Target’s pulling out all the stops during Prime Day too, and that competition means deals that are accessible to everyone.

Our Favorite Responses To The #inmyfeelings Challenge

If you were in a deep summer hibernation through the end of last week…and the entire weekend (we love naps, too—we understand)…you might’ve missed the #inmyfeelingschallenge blowing up…everywhere. It’s being hailed as “the summer’s viral dance challenge” by Time, and Instagrammer @theshiggyshow seems to have everyone moving (and singing along) to Drake’s “In My Feelings.”
Will Smith’s rendition took the challenge to new heights—literally—but at HealthyWay HQ, we’re always asking Where my ladies at?
In that spirit, we’ve rounded up our favorite empowered (and unabashed) lady wellness influencers’ responses to the #inmyfeelingschallenge, starting with Alison Wu of Wu Haus.
Alison’s IG vid, shot in her deliciously pastel, Smeg-refrigeratored kitchen, popped up in my feed and inspired our hunt for the best of ladies asking “Kiki, do you love me?” and busting out the type of choreography that proves just how diverse, talented, and entertaining the women we admire are.

Everything about this video has us asking, “Can we come over in our comfiest athleisure getup for a kitchen dance party (hopefully followed by snacking on your coconut matcha macaroons)?”

At least four of HealthyWay’s editors wear glasses on the regular, so between her black-rimmed specs and enviable brows, we’re feeling Aashna’s look.

Body positive dancer Amanda LaCount shows us some epic hair whips—and her smile is completely infectious, too.

South African Nkateko “Takkies” Maswanganye’s moves (and maybe her outfit?) have her husband eagerly providing the motivational feedback we’re all after when we start breaking it down to whatever song we’ve been feeling. #relationshipgoals

Everything about this #inmyfeelingschallenge response from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, has us celebrating. Especially those special effects.
