All The Best Products From Ulta's 21 Days Of Beauty Sale

Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty Sale is upon us. Prepare your wallets. Say goodbye to your paychecks. These deals are hard to beat. Whether you’ve decided to take advantage of Sephora’s Beauty Insider Appreciation Sale or not, it’s hard to ignore Ulta’s offerings that are, coincidentally, up for grabs starting right around the end of Sephora’s sale.
I’ve gone through each of the 21 days and picked out my top picks that I think are really great products or really great deals. You can find the products I’m most excited about under My Top Picks for This Week.
But just because I don’t love it doesn’t mean you won’t! That’s why I’ve made sure to include Everything Else on Sale in beautiful, clickable form for you. See a product you like the look of? Click the widget and you’ll be whisked off to the product page so you can purchase.
Finally, each week, the Ulta Beauty Collection—that is, products developed for and branded by Ulta—are also on sale. Their house line of products are some really solid basics and they’ve got great sales on those items too, so I’ve made sure to include those (again in beautiful, clickable widgets) under Ulta Beauty Buys This Week.
Enjoy the sale—it’ll be over before you know it!

Week One: Sept. 2-8

My Top Picks for This Week…

[sul title=”Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer” subheader=”Regularly $34 | $17 on Sept. 2″]
This is definitely one of my favorite face primers, so I never mind paying full price when it’s time to restock. It hydrates the skin, letting much-needed moisture soak in pre-foundation, plus it somehow has a glowy, blurring effect that seems to reduce the size of my pores, even when I feel they’re bigger than Texas itself.

Since it feels fairly lightweight, it’s great under foundation, tinted moisturizer, B.B. creams, and even on its own, making it one of the most versatile primers in my collection.

[sul title=”Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Cloud Cream Cleanser & Hyaluronic Cloud Serum” subheader=”Regularly $28-65 | $14-$32.50 on Sept. 2″]
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Elizabeth Barrett Browning may have been talking about her beau, Robert, but this week I’m dedicating the sonnet to Mr. P.T. Roth himself. His Water Drench line is to. die. for.

The Cloud Cream Cleanser is a lovely, whipped makeup remover and facial cleanser made with hyaluronic acid and silk proteins. Follow up that cleanser with the Hyaluronic Cloud Serum, which contains 75 percent hyaluronic acid, those same silk proteins, and a zinc, copper, manganese, iron, and silicon mineral complex, all of which work together to hydrate, moisturize, and soften, making your skin as soft as a cloud (probably—I’ve never touched one).
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2MA9mUe”]Get the cleanser at Ulta for $14 (reg. $28)[/link-button]

[sul title=”Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliners” subheader=”Regularly $22 | $11 on Sept. 3″]
I’m a huge Stila Stay All Day liquid liner fan, but for those of you who are not so into sharp wings and cat-eye looks, the Stila Smudge Stick liners are probably more up your alley.

It’s an eyeliner that—as the name implies—you can smudge for extra smokiness. However, once it’s on, it’s really on, and it’s not coming off for nothin’… well, besides makeup remover. But yes, these eyeliners are waterproof, so even though you can smudge it upon application to transform into the smokeshow you are inside, it won’t get smudgy on you throughout the day. Praise be.

[sul title=”Philosophy Time in a Bottle 100% In-Control Resist Renew Repair Serum” subheader=”Regularly $76 | $38 on Sept. 3″]
If Cher could turn back time, she’d take back those words that hurt you. If I could turn back time, I’d rather have the skin I had in my early twenties. We all want different things in life, I guess. Philosophy, however, appears to be on my side.

Their Time in a Bottle serum fights signs of aging and works to give you back the skin you had when you were young and worry-free. It repairs skin damage while protecting your face from free radicals and impurities, plus it sets you up for skin-related success by helping you fight future damage.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2wsugL7″]Get it at Ulta for $38 (reg. $76)[/link-button]
[sul title=”BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter” subheader=”Regularly $41 | $20.50 on Sept. 4″]
Nobody’s perfect, but BECCA thinks your skin can be. In addition to faithfully doing your skincare routine morning and night, you can take it up a notch with liquid highlighting drops to finally try that strobing thing out all the YouTube makeup artists talk about.

This highlighter is great because it’s fairly versatile. You can mix a few drops into your moisturizer, primer, or foundation of choice and apply all over your face for a subtle but marked glow. Alternatively if you want to get those cheekbones popping, use a drop or two and blend as you would a traditional highlighter.

[sul title=”Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser” subheader=”Regularly $15 | $7.50 on Sept. 4″]
This is one of Mario Badescu’s best-selling products, so if you’re in the market for a facial cleanser to target acne, this one is worth your attention.

Formulated with beta hydroxy acids to fight dead skin build up and clogged pores, it also uses soothing botanicals to calm redness and irritation that tends to come with breakouts. It’s potent enough to make a difference but gentle enough to use daily.

[sul title=”Eyeko Mascara” subheader=”Regularly $19-$30 | $9.50-$15 on Sept. 4″]
Check out all these Eyeko mascaras that are on sale on Sept. 5! Best of all, they all have really great reviews.

[sul title=”Benefit Hoola & Hoola Lite Matte Bronzing Powder” subheader=”Regularly $30 | $15 on Sept. 5″]
This was one of the OG Holy Grail products back in the day (and by back in the day, I mean like 10 years ago when the concept of YouTube beauty gurus was in its infancy). The industry has come a long way with bronzers and contouring and what-have-you, but this little bronzer in a box still holds its own among flashier products.

The regular Hoola is the classic, but Benefit’s also made Hoola Lite, a lighter shade for fairer complexions. They’re both completely matte, so when you swipe it over your face for a sunkissed glow, you won’t end up looking like a disco ball, which is highly important.

[sul title=”Kopari Save Face Oil” subheader=”Regularly $44 | $22 on Sept. 5″]
Kopari has made a splash recently for their face and body products and this face oil is no exception.

Use it to remove makeup, moisturize, prime before makeup, tend to split ends, and soothe cuticles—they call it a face oil but it’s really more of a multitasker. It’s full of powerhouse ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, squalane, avocado oil, and extracts like apple, coffee, sandalwood, banana, melon, and more that all work together to moisturize, soften, and protect.

[sul title=”Murad Age Reform Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture” subheader=”Regularly $75 | $37.50 on Sept. 6″]
So I’ve already shouted out one great product for the acne-prone girls, but what if your skin is drier than a desert? Well, I’m right there with you—I have extremely dry skin. It’s thirsty for love. I’ve used a few Murad products in my day so I’m excited about this Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture.

It’s a thick cream that manages to sink into the skin, instead of sitting on top feeling greasy. It uses a collagen support complex to boost firmness, while a blend of oils helps lock in that much-needed hydration. I love a good cream as the final step of my nighttime skin routine and at less than $40, this is a great option.

[sul title=”Beautyblender Blendercleanser Solid” subheader=”Regularly $16 | $8 on Sept. 6″]
I have extolled the virtues of the original Beautyblender before, and while some people may think it’s ridiculous to spend $20 on a makeup sponge when there are drugstore knockoffs for under $5, I can’t imagine what they’ll think of me recommending a $16 cleansing bar for said Beautyblender. But! This really is a great cleanser.

It’s basically a bar of soap, but it was formulated specifically to clean makeup and dirt out of a Beautyblender. It also comes with a little silicon cleansing mat that you can scrub your Beautyblender and makeup brushes on to get them extra clean.

[sul title=”Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara” subheader=”Regularly $25 | $12.50 on Sept. 7″]
In need of major volume? Lancôme’s Monsieur Big mascara may be the one for you. This thick fibered brush coats lashes in waxes and polymers to give you va-va-voom volume in just one coat.

Compared to bare lashes, Monsieur Big-coated lashes have 12 times more volume and 95 percent of respondents said that it glides on easily and wears well all day. Monsieur Big, je t’aime.

[sul title=”Perricone MD Cold Plasma Products” subheader=”Regularly $85-159 | $42.50-$79.50 on Sept. 7″]
Ulta’s doing it big on Sept. 7: All of Perricone MD’s Cold Plasma products are 50 percent off. For the uninitiated, that includes…
Cold Plasma+ Neck & Chest Broad Spectrum SPF 25 This whipped moisturizing cream is ideal for the oft-neglected skin on your neck and chest, which absolutely does need TLC (and moisture and SPF)! Repair damage and protect it from the sun; you’ll thank us in 20 years.

[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2NAXONc”]Get Cold Plasma+ Neck & Chest at Ulta for $44.50 (reg. $89)[/link-button]
Cold Plasma+ Eye This eye cream targets skin concerns that tend to come with aging, like crow’s feet and fine lines, and those that come with being a human of any age, like puffiness and dark circles. They claim you’ll see results in just seven days.

[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2wtOOTs”]Get it at Ulta for $55 (reg. $110)[/link-button]
Cold Plasma Sub-D “Loose, sagging skin” isn’t really how most people would like to describe their jawline/neck area. Perricone MD knows this. And so they have developed the Sub-D cream that targets wrinkles in the jaw/neck/chest region with alpha lipoic acid and caffeine.

[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2N4767b”]Get it at Ulta for $67.50 (reg. $135)[/link-button]
Cold Plasma+ Face If you’re starting to notice signs of aging, first of all, take a breath—we all get older (hopefully) and lines and wrinkles are a sign of experience and a life well-lived! But society and patriarchy and mean people are a thing, so we totally get why you want to maybe at least slow down the appearance of aging. This face treatment works to correct all those aging-related skin concerns. No shame in that game.

[sul title=”Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer” subheader=”Regularly $23 | $11.50 on Sept. 8″]
I love me some Anastasia! She’s the brow queen and even if you can’t make it to her salon in Beverly Hills, you can have the magic of her brow work in your own home.

The Brow Definer pencil is a thicker version of ABH’s beloved Brow Wiz pencil, making it better for those of us who are more Brooke Shields than Clara Bow to fill, define, and shape our power brows.

[sul title=”Philosophy Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Exfoliating Clay Mask” subheader=”Regularly $35 | $17.50 on Sept. 8″]
Now is the time to try a clay mask. (If you’ve been waiting for a sign, that was it.) Finally say bye-bye to blackheads with this mask.

Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple clay mask uses white clay, salicylic acid, and natural exfoliants to draw out clogged pores, extracting and refining them to give you a refreshed and smooth face you can’t help but touch. In a two-week study, 93 percent of women said their pores looked unclogged and their skin felt extra clean.

[sul title=”It Brushes for Ulta Velvet Luxe Brushes” subheader=”Regularly $24-$98 | $12-$49 on Sept. 9″]

[sul title=”Exuviance Age Reverse” subheader=”Regularly $78-$79 | $39-39.50 on Sept. 9″]
Told ya Sept. 9 was a heavy hitter. There are three products from Exuviance’s Age Reverse line on sale today.
Age Reverse HydraFirm Target signs of aging (as the line’s name implies) while also getting hydration, thanks to hyaluronic acid and a combination of powerful peptides.

Age Reverse Total Correct + Sculpt Serum Exuviance calls this their gold standard serum; it’s formulated to restore youth and vitality. And if it can’t actually do that, it can at least make it look like it’s doing that, and that’s half the battle.

[sul title=”Stila One Step Prime, One Step Illuminate, and One Step Correct Face Primers” subheader=”Regularly $36 | $18 on Sept. 10″]
Three primers! All on sale! What. A. Day. These One Step face primers from Stila are all similar but they do have distinct uses. One Step Prime fills in pores and lines to smooth out the canvas that is your face—paint away! One Step Illuminate hydrates and—surprise!—illuminates skin to get you off on the right foot. One Step Correct uses three color-correcting pigments to neutralize any discoloration and even complexion—green counteracts redness, lavender tackles yellow undertones, and peach brightens dark circles and spots.

Three highlighters! All on sale! What. A. Day. (Sound familiar?) But yes, Sept 10. is another great day at Ulta. There are three different highlighter formulations on sale from Flesh today: a highlighting balm, a highlighting powder, and liquid highlighting drops. The balm and drops come in four colors while the highlighting powder comes in six, so you can definitely find at least one—but let’s be real, probably more—to suit whatever look you’re going for. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

[sul title=”Lancôme Cils Booster XL Vitamin-Infused Mascara Primer” subheader=”Regularly $25 | $12.75 on Sept. 11″]
Boost them cils, girl. (Cils are eyelashes. De rien.) If you weren’t born with lush lashes but you still want the look of falsies without having to actually put them on, get a primer!

Put on this Lancôme primer pre-mascara to condition, thicken, and lengthen your bare lashes. Lancôme’s primers work great with their own mascaras, but I’ve used one of their lash primers before on any mascara and no matter what combination (or timing) I employ, I never experience clumping or fall-out. Big fan over here.

[sul title=”Algenist POWER Recharging Night Pressed Serum” subheader=”Regularly $95 | $47.50 on Sept. 11″]
I’ve got the power! That’s what you’ll be singing after using Algenist’s POWER Recharging Serum.

I love a serum that comes in a jar because it’s pretty much guaranteed to be rich and powerful (just how I like my men, coincidentally!). It uses their patented alguronic acid, AlgaProtein, and regular ol’ coconut water to recharge, moisturize, and hydrate. Powerful, indeed.

[sul title=”Dermablend Loose Setting Powder” subheader=”Regularly $27 | $13.50 on Sept. 12″]
In need of a solid setting powder? Dermablend’s loose powder absorbs oil and sets foundation and concealer to make sure it won’t cake, crease, or melt, no matter the temperature of the day.

Want a pro tip? Try the setting powder before foundation—it sounds completely counterintuitive but it’s actually a great way to secure your foundation to your face. At less than $15, it’s definitely worth a shot.

[sul title=”St. Tropez Gradual Tan Tinted Everyday Body Lotion” subheader=”Regularly $30 | $15 on Sept. 12″]
Summer may be basically over, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop looking tan. Key word: looking. Fake-baking isn’t a good look and it’s terrible for your skin.

Thankfully, the experts at St. Tropez will help you get a healthy glow that doesn’t come with a side of increased skin cancer risk. Use this buildable body lotion every day to work up to whatever color that looks best on you. It’s streak-free, doesn’t smell, and won’t transfer—that’s an autumn win.

Smashbox has made iconic primers for years so this is a great chance to get your hands on one of these. Their Photo Finish primers really do work as they say, so it’s not surprising that Smashbox is the No. 1 face primer brand in the U.S.

The Pore Minimizing Primer is, unsurprisingly, oil-free and it mattifies and controls oil for up to eight hours, offering you smooth skin and an even finish from your foundation.

Hi, yes, hello, you should buy this. There are so many vitamin C serums on the market right now, and a lot of them are really great. But most of them are more than $45, which is this serum’s full price, aka when it’s not on sale.

So when it is on sale? You gotta get it. It uses ascorbic acid as its source of vitamin C, which retexturizes the skin, targets signs of aging, and brightens complexions.

I know, I know, another setting powder. But A) that’s what Ulta’s choosing to have on sale, and B) who doesn’t love options?

This setting powder is great for all-day setting power so your makeup won’t get smudgy or slide around. But it’s also ideal for baking, the process in which you place a large amount of setting powder over concealer to make it really set into the skin, without wrinkling or creasing. A two-in-one product that’s 50 percent off—heck yes.

Week Three: Sept. 16-22

My Top Picks for This Week…

[sul title=”Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette” subheader=”Regularly $49 | $24.50 on Sept. 16″]
Heading into week 3 of the sale, Ulta’s bringing some really nice deals. Case in point: the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. (Before you start to wonder, yes, it does actually smell like chocolate.)

The palette combines cocoa powder and traditional eyeshadow formulas, inspired by a facial treatment Too Faced’s co-founder received. There are 16 highly pigmented neutrals here (with a couple pops of color) in a mix of mattes and shimmers.

[sul title=”Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar (2 oz.)” subheader=”Regularly $39 | $19.50 on Sept. 16″]
Hope in a Jar was a breakthrough when it first hit the shelves. When I first got into makeup and skincare, I remember thinking of Philosophy as a #goals brand, and years later, they’re still killing it!

The Renewed Hope in a Jar revolutionizes the original’s formula with a whipped texture and what Philosophy calls “clinically proven skin renewal technology.” That basically means a blend of AHAs, hyaluronate, and Asian fruit extract, which all team up to hydrate, moisturize, and renew

[sul title=”BECCA Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector” subheader=”Regularly $38 | $19 on Sept. 17″]
Major yassss for BECCA’s primers (and pretty much everything else they make).

This primer is ideal for my acne-prone, oily sisters—it soaks up excess oil, minimizes pore appearance, and mattifies all day long. In addition to being resistant to sweat, humidity, and whatever else comes it way, it’s also made without oil (duh), silicones, alcohol, and fragrances, so your skin will be happy and stay healthy all day long.

Oh man, First Aid Beauty is great. What more can I say? (Well, a lot more, as I’m sure you’ve picked up on.)

This is such a calming cleanser. It removes makeup and dirt without stripping the skin or making it red and irritated. It’s a gentle but powerful formula that uses botanical antioxidants to maintain the skin’s pH while cleansing. If you’re constantly feeling flushed or red, F.A.B. is FAB.

They’re so incredible versatile mixed in to your face base (just made that up, but I like it), used for strobing when you really want to go, or dotted on the high points of your face for a subtle highlight.

The Enhancer drops come in seven colors, a few of which would make a really pretty cream-ish eyeshadow base. There’s also the Glitter Drops, which can be used under or over makeup, or as makeup itself. These drops are truly customizable, mixable, and versatile… and again, very shiny.

[sul title=”Origins Morning Must Haves Set” subheader=”Regularly $22 | $11 on Sept. 20″]
A good value set is actually not all that hard to find, but that’s what makes them so fun. Value sets are the best for trying out things you’re not so sure about or for giving gifts when you can’t really think of anything else. The Origins Morning Must Haves set is no exception. It has mini sizes of four of Origins’ products and they’re perfect for trying out before you commit or for traveling if you already know you love them.

This set includes…
Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash: Origins’ top cleanser that drys up excess oil while keeping your drier areas in tact.

GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream to Brighten & Depuff: Wake up, sleepy head, with this eye cream that will certainly give you a morning zing.

This is the best-selling “prestige” face primer in the U.S., so they have to be doing something right.

It minimizes the appearance of fine lines, so your foundation won’t settle into those lines as the day goes on, and it reduces the appearance of pores so you can go about your day without wondering if your face looks alright. (It always does, girl. Don’t you worry.)

The No-Holds-Barred Checklist Of Everything To Buy From The Sephora Beauty Insider Appreciation Sale

Sephora is about to host their Beauty Insider Appreciation Event and if you’re a Beauty Insider at Sephora, you should definitely get excited. (And if you aren’t a Beauty Insider, hurry up and sign up—it’s free!) In addition to holding the sale, Sephora is also updating their entire Beauty Insider program by adding new incentives and benefits for every level.
Regular Beauty Insiders who’ve joined at the free level earn one point per dollar they spend, get a birthday gift, and trial-size products and sets. VIBs, who must spend $350 in a calendar year to qualify will now earn 1.25 points for every dollar they spend, plus they’ll get a chance to try full-size products for free. Finally, Rouge members, who need to hit a thousand dollars a year to get in, will now get 1.5 points per every dollar, plus they’ll get a $100 Rouge Reward and those full-size products. In other words, there’s never been a better time to join Sephora’s Beauty Insider program.
Their Beauty Insider Appreciation Event started on Aug. 24 and Rouge members get 20 percent off everything in the store.
Starting on Aug. 30, VIBs and Beauty Insiders can shop the event; VIBs will get 15 percent off storewide, while Beauty Insiders will get 10 percent off everything.
Not sure what to buy? I picked out 60 of my favorite items from Sephora, ranging from skin and body care to makeup to the best tools. Go a little crazy—it’s on sale!

Where Soul Meets Body: Bath + Body

[sol title=”Rub it in, rub it in.” subheader=”Biossance 100% Squalane Oil”]
This squalane oil is made from renewable sugarcane and is one of my favorite picks to head-to-toe hydration.

Biossance at Sephora

The oil mimics the squalene (spelled differently!) that our bodies naturally make to add extra moisture into your skin, no matter your skin type. This is the best time to buy it since it’s normally a little pricey.

[sol title=”A cult favorite straight from Provence.” subheader=”L’Occitane Almond Smoothing and Beautifying Supple Skin Oil”]

L’Occitane at Sephora

The oil melts right into your skin, making it perfect for a post-shower treat, and helps it stay hydrated for up to 48 hours. Fantastique.

[sol title=”Shake your bum bum.” subheader=”Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream”]
The title gives it away: This cream is for your bum bum. Tighten up the appearance of that derriere with this cream that takes its inspiration from the beaches of Brazil.
Sol de Janeiro at Sephora

It uses guaraná, a plant from the Amazon that contains caffeine. That caffeine works with cupuaçu butter, açaí, and coconut oil to hydrate, firm, and lift skin. Get thee to a beach: You’ll fit in just fine.

Grab this brand new body and hair oil from beauty giant BECCA and model Chrissy Teigen.
BECCA x Chrissy Teigen at Sephora

Chrissy’s collab with BECCA has been widely hyped and while reviews of this oil are mixed—some people just want more glitter and I understand that need—I’m definitely excited to get my hands on this shimmery product.

The secret to soft skin heaven: Exfoliate with Coco Rose, apply one of those amazing body oils, and finish up with this Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter.
Josie Maran at Sephora

Josie Maran’s well known for her pure argan oil but lucky for us all, she’s whipped up (heh) this argan oil–infused body butter. Argan oil, shea butter, white tea extract, and avocado oil work together to moisturize, hydrate, and nourish tired skin.

If you need some serious exfoliation, do a dry scrub with this mitt, followed by a scrub like Coco Rose. Just don’t forget to moisturize!

[sol title=”All the Olaplex!” subheader=”Olaplex No. 3, Olaplex No. 4, and Olaplex No. 5″]
Olaplex is out here changing the hair game, and the Insider Appreciation sale is the perfect time to try it out for yourself. Though it’s traditionally been used by salon professionals during coloring sessions, they now have products available for public consumers to use at home. No. 1 and No. 2 are used in salons, but No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 are for sale at Sephora.
[products ids=’1081679,1081680,1081681′ type=full]
Their Hair Perfector No. 3 is a hair treatment that helps strengthen and repair hair, reducing damage. The No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo moisturizes and repairs hair during the shampooing process, helping to eliminate frizz, breakage, and flyaways. Finally, the No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner works with the No. 4 Shampoo to make your hair stronger than ever.

It’s a beloved foundation, with over 200,000 “loves” on Sephora’s site, but at $64, it’s really a candidate for an on-sale purchase.
Giorgio Armani at Sephora

Despite it being a medium-coverage liquid foundation, it has a natural finish and it’s lightweight, meaning it won’t look too shiny or overly matte. Plus it’ll last all day—and night.

Kevyn Aucoin at Sephora

The Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Contour Powder is one of the best contour powders out there. It has a matte finish meaning you won’t end up like a disco ball, but the intricately designed pigments will keep you from having ruddy, muddy cheeks.

Anastasia Beverly Hills

Now, ABH is back with a new palette named after ABH president Norvina Soare. Soare designed the palette based on what was looking for in a go-to palette, and after seeing the 14 shades (in matte, metallic, and duo-chrome finishes), we think it’ll be our new go-to as well.

Fenty Beauty at Sephora

From women who were born with albinism to women of color who aren’t traditionally represented in media or the beauty industry, Rihanna made sure there’s a shade of her foundation for all of them. The matte finish on this makes it perfect for more oily/combination skin types, but its medium coverage means it doesn’t go on too heavy.

Fenty Beauty at Sephora

Fenty Beauty’s Stunna Lip Paint is a liquid lipstick that lasts up to 12 hours, and even though it’s matte, it doesn’t dry your lips out (at least not anymore than any other liquid lipstick). This shade was tested and picked out by Rihanna herself and truly looks good on everyone.

[sol title=”It’s the mascara you don’t want to tell Mom about.” subheader=”Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara”]
With a name like that, you kind of have to try it, right?
Too Faced at Sephora

It’s Sephora’s best-selling mascaras and the best-selling “prestige” mascara in the U.S., thanks to its volumizing and lengthening formula that coats every lash in the blackest black pigment. You need just one coat for definition but each additional coat brings you more lush curls. Go on and try it—it’s better than you-know-what.

[sol title=”The eyeliner that isn’t coming off.” subheader=”Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner”]
There are plenty of liquid liners on the market that perform well, and trust me, I’ve tried a lot of them. But once I tried Stila’s Stay All Day liner, I never went back.
Stila at Sephora

The Black color is a true jet black that dries down matte without flaking. I’ve worn it swimming, showering, at weddings, and at funerals—it doesn’t move. And on my off days when I fall asleep in my makeup (a major offense, I know), it somehow lasts until the next morning. Plus the applicator is perfect for wings so sharp they’d cut a man—just how I like it.

Urban Decay

These pencils go on creamy unlike traditional pencils which tug at the delicate skin around your eyes and they’re blendable for about 30 seconds if you want to get a smudgy, smoky look. After that, it sets and lasts all day. Plus with 35 colors, there’s truly a color for every look.

[sol title=”Get your brows on fleek (apparently we’re still saying that).” subheader=”Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz”]
Anastasia Beverly Hills was founded by eyebrow queen Anastasia Soare and her products are the best in the game for getting brows people are jealous of. I was torn between including Brow Wiz or Dip Brow on this list but I ultimately went with Brow Wiz because it’s so easy to use.
Anastasia Beverly Hills at Sephora

There’s a lot of pigment in one little pencil so you don’t have to use a lot to make precise strokes or fill in bare spots.

[sol title=”When the store brand does it better…” subheader=”Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick”]
This is a time when the store brand really knocks it out of the park. The Sephora Collection is makeup made by Sephora. It has a major spot in the store…off to the side, so most people seem to ignore it (a mistake in general). But if you’ve been skipping out on their liquid lipsticks, you’re seriously missing out!
Sephora Collection

These insanely pigmented liquid lipsticks are some of my favorite. In matte, satin, and metallic finishes, there are 90—yes, 90—shades available. (“01 Always Red” is one of my go-to reds, along with the Fenty Stunna!)

Sweatpants, Hair Tied, Chillin’ With No Makeup On: Skin Care

[sol title=”The Holy Grail.” subheader=”SK-II Facial Treatment Essence”]
No, it’s not cheap. Yes, it is worth it. This is the skincare product to end all skincare products. The definition of iconic.

SK-II

The SK-II Facial Treatment Essence has been on shelves for over 35 years and it’s a favorite of beauty junkies, celebs, and estheticians alike. Use it regularly and you’re sure to see fewer wrinkles, less visible spots, refined skin texture, improved firmness, and more radiance. It’s made up of more than 90 percent pitera, a bio-ingredient rich in minerals, vitamins, and acids that work together to make you glow.

[sol title=”If you can’t make it, fake it.” subheader=”Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment”]
If you hear “acid” and feel scared, don’t be. The acids in products like Good Genes are cosmetically elegant, meaning they do their job and leave no harm.
Sunday Riley at Sephora

This treatment is ideal for post-toner application. The lactic acid will gently but effectively exfoliate dead skin cells while reducing fine lines and other signs of aging. According to Sephora, 100 percent of women said their skin looked and felt smoother and had fewer lines and wrinkles; 100 percent of women also said it was the best skin-plumping product they’d ever used. If you don’t have good genes, you can buy them.

Drunk Elephant

This is a Clean at Sephora–certified product, meaning it’s made with clean, responsible ingredients. I love it for a post-toner treatment and sleep much better knowing its glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric, and salicylic acids are doing major work on my skin while I sleep.

[sol title=”An at-home ‘facial’ that actually works.” subheader=”Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial”]
Okay, this is the last Drunk Elephant product on the list—I promise! But what can I say, they make great products.
Drunk Elephant

This “facial” is an AHA/BHA mask that makes your skin feel like a baby’s (hence the name). I put it on for about 20 minutes once a week for a deep cleaning with results I can literally feel. Plus, since you’re only using a bit at a time, it’ll last you a long while, making that price a little easier to swallow.

Whether you have an iPhone that got rid of the headphone jack (sigh) or you’ve just yanked your headphones out of your laptop when jamming a bit too hard, it’s time to look into Bluetooth headphones. Mpow says that “impressive sound quality is the ultimate goal” and reviews seem to agree that they’ve achieved that goal. Additionally, you can get 13 hours of listening time on these and they charge fairly quickly.
Mpow Bluetooth Headphones / Amazon

Sure, intense audiophiles might need something a bit more fancy, but for us regular folk who are content listening to the new Ariana Grande album at normal quality (run, don’t walk, to iTunes to download Sweetener, by the way), these headphones more than suffice. People on Amazon can be pretty intense about headphone reviews but these have garnered over 15,000 5-star reviews, proving that even though they’re affordable, they’re also quality.

This is Amazon’s Choice for “key finder” and seeing as Tile has sold over 5 million Tile Mates, that certainly makes sense. If you can’t find your phone, you can just tap on your Tile to make your phone ring. Plus the Tile app will remember where you left your phone or keys.

While the average rating is sitting just below 4 out of 5 stars (still pretty darn good), we’re on the side of the nearly 6,000 5-star reviews who say this little square has changed their lives.

Common Skincare Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Skin

Here’s the deal: You only have one bag of skin to carry you throughout this mortal plane. And you’re probably treating it like dirt! What are you doing?!
Skincare is definitely having a moment right now (which I love), but in some circles it’s still considered high maintenance to do, well, any maintenance on it whatsoever. In the same way that we need to eat well and exercise to take care of our bodies, it’s also crucial that we take care of our skin—after all, it’s our largest organ.
But maybe you’re reading this and thinking Hey, I do wash my face! Well, that’s great! Really. But it’s still highly likely you’re making these common skincare mistakes. It’s time to up your skincare game and learn how to truly take care of your skin.

You’re soaking up the rays in all the wrong ways.

You probably remember your mom getting after you to put on sunscreen. And you probably begrudgingly dashed it on, failed to rub it in properly, and never reapplied, right? Well hopefully now you know better than that, but even the most serious SPF devotees can make some big sunscreen mistakes. And unlike a small error that might lead to just a breakout, failing to protect yourself from the sun the right way can increase your risk for skin cancer. Let’s go through some basic sunscreen rules:
You need to use a broad spectrum sunscreen.
Here’s a fun tip you may not have learned: SPF only refers to a how well a sunscreen will protect you from the sun’s UVB rays. And it’s important that you’re protected from those rays. UVB rays are what cause sunburns and most skin cancers; plus the more sunburns you get in your lifetime, the higher your risk of skin cancer. But that’s leaving out those pesky (and incredibly damaging) UVA rays. In order to get full protection from the sun, you need to use a broad spectrum sunscreen; any broad spectrum sunscreen will say that it is on the bottle.
If you’d rather not sort through sunscreens to find out which ones will really protect you, we did the leg work for you:

Neutrogena Beach Defense Water + Sun Protection SPF 70

You don’t need to go expensive to get a solid broad spectrum sunscreen. This has been rated one of the best sunscreens in the United States and it’s Amazon’s No. 1 best seller in sunscreens. Plus, since it’s oil-free you won’t need to worry about any body breakouts.

Neutrogena Beach Defense Water + Sun Protection SPF 70, $6.39 from Amazon

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Sensitive SPF 30+

Do like the Aussies do with Blue Lizard, a physical sunscreen that happens to be water-resistant, paraben-free, and, of course, broad spectrum. It’s rated a Top Choice from the Environmental Working Group, thanks to its high-quality ingredients that won’t hurt you or the environment.

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Sensitive SPF 30+, $14.23 from Amazon
You need to wear sunscreen every. single. day.
Yes, really. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy out. Unless you’re only leaving the house between the hours of 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. (whatcha doin?), sunscreen is a must. The sun’s UVA rays can penetrate car windows and windows in your home and office, so even if you’re just walking from your house to car to office, you still need to apply sunscreen.
If you’re used to thick, gloopy sunscreens that sit on your skin giving you the dreaded white cast, try these incredible sunscreens that’ll go on your face smoothly, leaving a perfect palette for makeup (or not!):

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40

This is an incredible sunscreen. It’s actually clear so you’ll never have to deal with a weirdly white glow on your face and it goes on matte so you won’t have the sunscreen shine. Plus, it doesn’t smell like coconuts.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40, $32 from Sephora

Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 42 For Face

Shiseido is a Japanese brand known for incredible skincare, makeup, and makeup tools (their eyelash curler is a cult favorite). This sunscreen is oil-free and incredibly light, making it the perfect last step of your skincare routine and ideal for a base for your makeup.

Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 42 for Face, $34 from Sephora

Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 PA+++

Tatcha is another brand from Japan whose skincare products have really shaken things up. This sunscreen is derm-tested with high quality ingredients that leave a weightless, silky finish. The PA+++ part of this product name comes from the Japanese sunscreen grading system, wherein each additional plus sign informs buyers about UVA ray protection. As mentioned, SPF refers to UVB protection so when you buy this Tatcha sunscreen, you know you’re getting both forms of oh-so necessary protection.

Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 PA+++, $65 from Sephora
You need to reapply sunscreen every two hours.
Yes, really. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy out. Wait, this is the same stuff we said above. There’s a reason for that: It’s still true! Applying sunscreen only once is what leads to sunburns and skin damage. Even if you’re using the highest SPF in the world (which, by the way, is kind of a waste), you still need to reapply—very carefully—every two hours.
Can’t fit a giant bottle of sunscreen in your work bag or purse? We got you. These sunscreen sets are full of travel sizes that easy for on-the-go use:

COOLA 4 Piece Organic Suncare Travel Set

This four-piece travel set (well, five, if you count the cute bag) comes with an SPF 30 face sunscreen, SPF 30 sunscreen spray, SPF 30 Liplux lip balm, and their Environmental Repair Plus Radical After Sun Lotion on the off chance you do get burned. Take it all with you when you leave the house and you’ll be ready for anything the sun throws at you.

COOLA 4 Piece Organic Suncare Travel Set, $37.99 from Amazon

Supergoop! At Play Tote Value Set

We love a good value set, obviously. This is another five-piece set (four SPF products + a great bag) and it contains everything you need for the sunniest of days. Supergoop! has included their SPF 50 Everyday Sunscreen, SPF 50 Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C, SPF 40 Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen, and SPF 30 Mintfusion Lip Balm.

Supergoop! At Play Tote Value Set, $45 from Amazon
You need to use more than you think.
Your one pump of sunscreen for your entire body just isn’t cutting it. Sure, it’s better than nothing, but it’s not really doing you many favors. Dermatologists recommend you use 1 ounce for your whole body—which, conveniently, is about the size of those little glasses you had lying around at parties in college. Alternatively, head into your kitchen and look at your measuring spoons. Two tablespoons is how much you need to use from head to toe; a nickel-sized glob is how much you should use for your face.
For convenience’s sake, you may as well have a giant bottle at home to apply before you head out the door. Our favorite picks for protection in bulk:

Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen with Cellular Response Technology SPF 50 (18 oz)

Yes, you can now have the biggest bottle of sunscreen we’ve ever seen. It comes with a full-on pump to make sure you aren’t skimping out with a squeeze. This water-resistant, broad spectrum formula is ideal from nose to toes and despite being incredibly lightweight, it’s effective and moisturizing.

Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen with Cellular Response Technology SPF 50 (18 oz), $48 from Amazon

Banana Boat Sunscreen Sport Family Size SPF 50 (12 oz)

Grab the family size of the traditional Banana Boat sunscreen we’ve all been using since childhood. On the plus side, this is the sport performance formula, meaning it’ll resist water and sweat for 80 minutes. Additionally, it’s safe for coral reefs since it’s made without oxybenzone and octinoxate, two effective but damaging-for-reef ingredients found in many sunscreens.

Banana Boat Sunscreen Sport Family Size SPF 50 (12 oz), $9.44 from Amazon

You’re skipping a step before sleep.

If you don’t wear makeup, feel free to skip this. But if you do, you’re most likely skipping a very crucial step in your skincare routine: actually taking your makeup off.
Maybe you wash your face every single night, and that’s great. That’s more than great. But taking off your eye makeup before you start cleansing is key. Before moving onto the next step in your skincare routine, you should do the previous steps to the best of your ability—walk before you run, you know?
So please, do your skin a favor and use a dedicated makeup remover before you use a face wash. You’ll notice a difference right away. Our favorite makeup removers are so great, in fact, you’ll be happy you picked one up:

Micellar Water

There are actually a few really great micellar waters on the market now and we’re happy to recommend (almost) all of them. Micellar water is an ideal makeup remover because it really does breakdown most makeup and actually removes it but it does so without any harsh synthetic chemicals that can dry out your skin.
[products ids=’1080608,1080610,1080612,1080614′ type=full]
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, $14.16 from Amazon
La Roche-Posay Micellar Cleansing Water for Sensitive Skin, $7.99 from Amazon
Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water, $6.61 from Amazon
Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Micellar Water, $5.23 from Amazon

Lancôme Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover

Historically, a favorite among many makeup-wearers of the world. Shake it up to combine the oil in the product with the water to lift away even the most waterproof of waterproof mascaras. Safe for contact lens wearers too!

Lancôme Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover, $30 from Sephora

You’re using this one common product.

You may notice in that list of favorite makeup removers that we didn’t list any makeup removing wipes. There’s a reason for that: They’re terrible.
Sure, if you stumble into bed late at night not feeling your best, it’s better to use a wipe than nothing at all. But if you’re of sound mind and decision making, don’t open that pack of wipes.
Makeup wipes don’t really clean your skin. Instead, they’ll smear the makeup all over your face. They also have some questionable ingredients, like preservatives that can irritate the skin and emulsifiers that can dry your skin out. Some of those preservatives are chemicals that release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen and allergen.
If you use a wipe and don’t immediately wash your face with an actual cleanser, you’re letting that stuff hang out on your face all night. Do better for yourself and stick with one of the dedicated makeup removers we suggested above. And then get to cleaning—properly.

You’re only cleansing once.

That’s right: washing your face just once isn’t cutting it. Granted, there are some really great cleansers and face washes out there and they do some really great things, but if you want to get serious about skin care, you need to learn the art of the double cleanse.
Double cleansing is the new M.O. if you want skin that’s actually clean. See, a lot of the dirt, environmental toxins, impurities, and other bits of junk that get on our face throughout the day aren’t so water-soluble. So when you’re using a foaming cleanser, you’re certainly cleaning off some of it—but a lot of it is left behind too. Enter an oil cleanser.
To truly, actually, really cleanse your face of the daily junk, you’ll need to use an oil cleanser first to get rid of the oil-soluble impurities. Put the oil onto a dry face and massage, then add water to transform it into a milky substance, like a runny lotion. The oil in these cleansers attracts much more of the dirt hiding in your pores, pulls it out, and as it mixes with water, emulsifies to give your skin a nice little hug of hydration. Then follow up with that water-soluble cleanser to get rid of the excess oil before moving onto your next skincare steps.
Not sure where to start? Here are our top oil cleansing picks:

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

This is the ideal oil cleanser, in my mind. It’s a solid that, when applied to dry skin (that is, skin without water on it—it’s actually great for all skin types), emulsifies into an oil that’ll whisk off any makeup, dirt, and impurities. Follow it up with a great water-based cleanser and you’ll feel an immediate difference.

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, $29.50 from Sephora

L’Occitane Shea Face Cleansing Oil

Feel very fancy with this French cleansing oil from L’Occitane. With 5 percent shea oil, this is an incredibly moisturizing oil cleanser that’s also incredibly effective. Plus, we really like the pump formulation that will ensure you don’t accidentally use too much.

L’Occitane Shea Face Cleansing Oil, $24 from Amazon

Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil

Go a little more budget with this 100 percent grapeseed oil that will dissolve the toughest-to-remove makeup and soften your skin—without an oily finish. Plus without any artificial fragrances or colors, you can rest easy knowing this is a great choice for your sensitive skin.

Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil, $7.79 from Amazon

You take scrubbing a little too seriously.

Exfoliation is the trick to clear, soft, smooth skin: the skin everyone wants to have naturally. In years past—think middle school years perusing the aisles at Walgreens—you probably reached for a scrub. In particular, the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Who didn’t use that at some point? Unfortunately, it’s absolutely terrible for your skin. In fact, in 2016, two women brought a suit against St. Ives because the scrub includes crushed walnut shells. Guess what happens when you vigorously rub crushed walnut shells against your skin? Microtears in your skin. That can cause inflammation, redness, pain, and even infection if you’re too vigorous.
Scrubs in general aren’t the best way to exfoliate. There are some incredible microdermabrasion exfoliators out there (we’re talking about you, Dr. Brandt), but most scrubs are made with harsh ingredients that ultimately damage skin in the long run. And if you try to DIY one, you might not be much better off: Many exfoliator recipes floating around the internet advocate including ingredients like salt or baking soda. They actually want you to put baking soda on your face. Please, don’t put baking soda on your face.
Instead, skip the scrubs—unless they’re dermatologist-approved, of course. Look to chemical exfoliation. It’s not as scary as it sounds. It typically involves alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids and fruit-based enzymes to gently slough off dead skin cells. Used properly (aka, not every single day), these chemical exfoliators are much more effective.
If you haven’t jumped on the chemical exfoliator train, here are our top picks:

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial

This mask is a dream exfoliator. With 25 percent AHA and 2 percent BHA (plus a blend of glycolic, tartaric, lactic, citric, and salicylic acids), this is an incredibly effective exfoliating mask. It breaks down gross dead skin cells to give you a glow you only thought was possible after a professional facial. Use only once a week for just 20 minutes to get results you’ll love.

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial, $80 from Sephora

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Smooth & Flawless: Peel + Moisturize

Get a chemical peel at home with these amazing daily peel pads. There are 14 pads here that you use every day. After two weeks with these glycolic, salicylic, and malic acid pads, you’ll see a huge difference in the glow factor of your skin. Use the included Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion moisturizer for intense hydration.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Smooth & Flawless: Peel + Moisturize, $37 from Amazon

Pixi Glow Tonic

This is an incredible but gentler dupe for Biologique Recherche’s P50 Lotion, the cult status fave that can run upwards of $100. The 5 percent glycolic acid makes this an ideal exfoliator: it’ll certainly give you a glow, but thanks to the aloe and ginseng that’s also included, you won’t get irritated.

Pixi Glow Tonic, $36.20 from Amazon
And if you simply require the scrubby feeling mechanical exfoliation can bring, here’s what we recommend:

Dr. Brandt Skincare Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator

Age defying sounds pretty nice, right? Dr. Brandt’s microdermabrasion exfoliators will definitely give you the scrub factor but thanks to its lactic acid, which acts as a chemical exfoliator, it doesn’t need to be a harsh scrub. Plus with soothing botanical-derived ingredients, your skin will be soothed while it’s being exfoliated.

Dr. Brandt Skincare Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator, $48 from Amazon

Tatcha The Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder

This physical exfoliator is so gentle you might wonder if it’s even doing anything. Fret not—it certainly is. The Japanese rice bran that gives it its exfoliating power is non-abrasive and the rice and papaya enzymes in the product turn into a beautiful foam that will simultaneously exfoliate and soften your skin. Plus, thanks to a combo of green tea, rice, and algae, you’ll be getting that radiance you see in magazines.

Tatcha The Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder, $84 from Amazon

You’re skipping hydration.

Let’s say you’ve seen the light here. You’re down to use a dedicated makeup remover. You’re ready to double cleanse. You are now a sunscreen queen. You are taking care of your skin like a pro—from the outside.
But what about the inside? That’s where hydration comes in.
There are plenty of incredible moisturizers out there—in fact, we rounded up the best ones for various skin types and budgets right here—but hydration is another story. They’re not actually the same thing. Some products do work on hydrating your skin, and it’s great to use those. But if you’re noticing that you look a little lackluster, you may have dehydrated skin. And the best way to cure that is by drinking water.
Listen, we all know that you’re supposed to drink your eight glasses a day. Some nutritionists even recommend drinking half your bodyweight in ounces of water every day is a lot to ask. But most Americans aren’t even coming close. Hydrate your body, hydrate your skin. One way to make it easier for you is to constantly have a bottle of water at your side—and no, we don’t mean a one-use water bottle from the gas station. Try these instead:

S’well Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle

We’re still not over the marble trend. Not sure why. It just looks good with everything. So when we saw S’well, rulers of the water bottle world, had a marble bottle, we had to get it. The double-walled construction of S’well bottles keeps water cold for 24 hours, so there’s really no excuse for not chugging it.

S’well Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle, $35 from Amazon

Ello Pure BPA-Free Glass Water Bottle

Skip the BPA worries by just going glass. You can feel safe leaving it in your car on accident without worries of gross chemicals leaching into your water, while the silicone sleeve protects it from bumps and drops. Even better, it’s dishwasher safe. We’re in.

Ello Pure BPA-Free Glass Water Bottle, $9.99 from Amazon

OMORC Fruit Infuser Water Bottle

Sick of plain water? We don’t blame you. It can get boring drinking the same thing all day. Grab yourself a infuser water bottle. You can add in any fruit, veggies, herbs, or spices you’re into (here are the recipes we recommend) and sip it down.

OMORC Fruit Infuser Water Bottle, $11.99 from Amazon

You’re a new product junkie.

I’m guilty of this one myself. I get new products a lot: sometimes when we partner with brands, I’m subscribed to Boxycharm and FabFitFun, and I’m VIB Rouge at Sephora. Trust me, I’m a product junkie.
But there is one rule that all product junkies must know. The top rule of skincare: Don’t try more than one new thing at once.
If you’ve gotten excited about what we’re talking about here (and I hope you are!), make sure you slowly incorporate your newfound product loves into your skincare routine. If a product ends up interacting poorly with your current routine, you won’t know which one it is if you slapped three new products on your face last night. Similarly, if you have a reaction, you won’t be able to pinpoint what caused it if you’ve tried a whole new routine in the last week.
Go ahead, be a product junkie if that’s what you’re into. In fact, I encourage it. Just be smart about it.

Wildfang Is The Feminist Brand That Designs For Every Body

Out of Office is a regular feature of brands we love—and we think you will too! Each of the brands we highlight must meet three criteria: 1) have a woman in charge; 2) create sustainably, responsibly, and thoughtfully; and 3) fit in with the lives we’re actually living. Read on to find out more about this week’s brand, the lady behind it all, and the advice she has for women everywhere.

‧ ‧ ‧ ‧ ‧

It happens all the time. You walk into a store and it just doesn’t seem like anything is your style, so you leave empty-handed. And if your style or size doesn’t happen to fit into the neat little boxes of women’s fashion (as deemed by the glossies), you likely struggle even more.
That’s exactly what happened in 2010 when Emma Mcilroy, co-founder and CEO of Wildfang, was on the hunt for a bold graphic tee. When nothing in the women’s department was working, she headed to the men’s section, where she found a great shirt with a suggestive pic of Kate Moss on it. She was in love! And then she realized it wouldn’t fit her.
“Ems, why don’t they make this shit for us?” her friend implored. And Emma said, “Jules, why don’t we start a clothing company that allows women to wear whatever the hell they want?” And her friend said, “Yeah, maybe,” which was enough. So they decided to make that shit for them (them meaning all women). And they called it Wildfang.
HealthyWay
Wildfang is German for “tomboy.” In an interview with Racked when Wildfang first started, Emma explained that for herself and co-founders Julia Parsley and Taralyn Thuot, tomboy “stands for a real fun-loving, cheeky, carefree, positive, bold girl that I think many of us aspire to be when we’re at our best,” and “sums up, loosely, that menswear-inspired vibe that we’re going after.” Wildfang wants to empower women by “smashing gender roles” through the clothing they sell.
With the recent widespread resurgence of feminist sentiment the internet over, Wildfang has continued to ride the wave and do what they’ve always done: design cool shit for women. Wildfang makes their own clothing and also acts as a boutique for other badass brands. They’re inclusive in their sizing too, making sure that their stuff isn’t just for the slimmer figures of the world.
HealthyWay
Their presence in the space has given them a political voice as well. Emma said in a Forbes article: “I never intended Wildfang to be political—but then I also never intended it to be political to be a woman.” Wildfang doesn’t just make statement tees and yell into an echo chamber; they also make tangible change by donating to causes they feel passionate about.
They made major headlines when they produced the “I Really Care, Don’t U?” jacket in response to Melania Trump’s jacket fiasco. Rather than just criticize Melania’s (ridiculous) choice to wear her “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket while visiting detained immigrant children, Wildfang created their own spin as a t-shirt with the goal to raise $100,000 for RAICES, a non-profit that provides immigrants and refugees with legal aid and services. (In the end, they raised $250K.)
In addition, Wildfang has donated $100,000 to save the last abortion clinic in South Dakota and $75,000 to Planned Parenthood, ACLU, and Tegan and Sara Foundation, among others. Proceeds from their “Wild Feminist” collection also give back to a different charity each month. That’s some serious coin going to those incredibly important causes.
HealthyWay
Wildfang is about more than selling a style of clothing missing from the mainstream fashion market. They empower women with clothing to feel their best, most confident, most authentic self, and they use their pieces to make statements. As Emma said in one interview, “Fashion has been historically a very political way to express our views.” It’s clear that Wildfang takes that seriously.

HealthyWay’s Picks From Wildfang

Where to even begin? (Seriously, they have a ton of stuff and it’s all so frickin’ cool. So picking out my faves was a toughy.) I decided to limit myself to things just made by Wildfang, but they also sell pieces from brands like RVCA, Hips & Hair, and Bridge & Burn.
I’m pretty reserved when it comes to fashion: I tend to dress in neutrals with clean lines and few patterns. And yet this shirt exists. The Ultimate WF Cat Button Up is truly incredible and I only lament that I didn’t find it sooner.
And now I’m back to my regularly scheduled programming with this black on black Wild Feminist tee. I love how it’s subtle but still carries a strong message for those who choose to pay attention. That’s probably a metaphor for something.
The Wild Feminist crop pants are too damn cool. I didn’t realize until I inspected closely that the grid print is actually made up of text that says “Wild Feminist” over and over. Brilliant! That’s a pattern I can get down with.
You better believe that I’ll be outfitting my daughter in this kids tee. She’s all about girl power, so this is the perfect shirt for her to wear as she heads into first grade this fall.
And finally, I had to include these Wild Feminist sparkle pens. (I’m a pen and planner addict.) When something as simple as a pen can share a message and it has sparkles, I am all over it.

Q+A With Emma Mcilroy

What’s your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start your company?

My best friend and I were shopping in the men’s department at a local clothing store—I was shopping for a bold, provocative graphic tee—which you never find in women’s section. Everything there is always floral and bohemian. My best friend wanted a cool blazer and found one she loved in the men’s department but it was way too big for her. That got us thinking—why are there certain styles you aren’t allowed to wear because of your gender? Why are women restricted from buying certain styles? So we decided to change that. We decided to start a company that allows women to express themselves however the hell they want.

HealthyWay

Walk us through your typical work day.

There is no typical day! I’ll give you an example of how yesterday went—started at 8:30 a.m. with a four-hour offsite with my eCommerce team to do a SWOT analysis of our website and plan our web development roadmap for fall 2018. Immediately after that, I had an HR meeting with a staff member about promoting them into a new role. Next I did a quick interview for a radio station. I then met with our Amazon consultant to brainstorm ways to grow our Amazon business and set sales forecast for rest of 2018.
My day in the office ended with a review of the creative direction for H1 2019—reviewing the key trends, colors, materials for the spring and summer seasons. I finally got an hour to do emails and grab food before I headed over to our Free Speech event at our store. I’m the host and the event is phenomenal. I got home around 10 p.m.

What’s up next for your company?

We’re actually getting ready to open an LA location this fall, are giving back TONS of money ($250K) to RAICES from our “I Really Care” collection in response to Melania Trump’s “I Really Don’t Care Jacket,” and getting ready to release some killer suits for fall.

HealthyWay
Said killer suit

We are also working really hard on our product right now to improve the fit and the quality but also expand the sizing range so more women can access it. Our new suiting goes up to size 20 and we’re psyched about how awesome it looks. The long-term goal is to be her favorite brand and make a huge impact on our community.

If you had to pick just one of your pieces as your favorite, which would it be and why?

It would be the Wild Feminist tee. That shirt always makes me feel bolder and braver. I wear it when I need a little confidence boost.

What’s your best advice for our readers?

Surround yourself with only the best people who 100 percent share your vision. If you can build great teams with shared vision you will ALWAYS win. You need a #yeahmaybe crew.

What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?

By turning off my phone. Emails and social media create stress and distraction. When my phone is off, my mind clears.

Wellness applies to body, mind, and emotional health. All three have to work together. When one is damaged they all suffer. Wellness is connected to balance and regeneration for me. I try to make room for both.

What book do you think all women need to read?

I don’t know if there’s one book, but The Untethered Soul really helped me. It’s all about letting go. I also loved Peace Pilgrim. Both changed my life.

Pick your fuel of choice: Coffee, tea, or something else?

Black tea, ideally an Assam

What’s your ideal day off of work?

Going to the Oregon Coast with my wife. I love the sea so much.

What was your first job?

I had two: working in my dad’s shop and also being a bartender at local social club.

What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company and how did you overcome it?

People. It’s always about motivating and identifying a team. I never settle for anything less than the best for a role. And I never settle for someone who is not a cultural fit. Get the people right and you get everything else right.

How do you stay motivated?

Our mission and our customers keep me motivated. They are why we get up every day and work hard.

The Books We're Reading This Fall

Yes, it’s only August, but in my mind, that means summer is basically over. Labor Day will be here faster than we know it, beginning the roll into the end of the year. Soon it’ll be autumn—the best time of year for cuddling up with a cozy throw and a good book.
I’ve put together a lengthy list of books that will keep you company during sunny Sundays on the couch and get you through the doldrums of late fall. From highly anticipated releases to classics perfect for sleepy autumn nights, here’s HealthyWay’s fall 2018 reading list.

Books With Buzz

Each of these books has had a certain amount of press surrounding its release. Hop on the train before everyone else to give yourself endless cocktail party conversation topics.

Killing Commendatore: A Novel by Haruki Murakami

Murakami is back with a two-part novel about a painter whose wife divorces him. He goes to stay in another artist’s house where he discovers a painting in the attic, setting strange adventures in motion. The book, which pays homage to The Great Gatsby, is so controversial it’s been censored in Hong Kong…so of course that means we’ll be picking it up as soon as it drops.
Pre-order your copy now or get it on Oct. 9.

Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini

From the author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns comes an illustrated short work that speaks to the refugee crises raging around the world. The book takes the form of a letter a father writes to his son the night before they escape Syria. Hosseini was inspired by the photo of Alan Kurdi, the Syrian boy who washed up on a Turkish beach, and is donating all proceeds to the UN Refugee Agency and the Khaled Hosseini Foundation.
Pre-order your copy now or get it on Sept. 18.

In Her Bones: A Novel by Kate Moretti

Can’t do a fall book list without a horror story. In Her Bones is a thriller following Edie Beckett, the daughter of a murderer, as she comes to terms with her mother’s crimes. When a man is found murdered, Edie’s the main suspect and has to figure out what happened. Moretti, a New York Times–bestselling author, has already received high praise for this novel; we can’t wait to get started.

Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents by Pete Souza

If you loved Obama: An Intimate Portrait by former official White House photographer Pete Souza, you’ll love his next photo book. Born from Souza’s shady (and beloved) Instagram posts, the book contrasts photos of Obama during his administration with Trump’s tweets and headlines from his first 500 days in office. Souza, who estimated he took 1.9 million photos during Obama’s eight years in office, has a photo for everything—and it’s delicious.

Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover

This memoir was actually released in February 2018, but it’s been making waves all year. Westover, who grew up in an isolated Mormon family in Idaho, didn’t have a birth certificate and didn’t attend school until she was 17. Nevertheless, she went on to graduate with a PhD in history from Cambridge University. It’s a book about family, education, privilege, access, and shame—and a definite must-read.

The Outsider by Stephen King

Okay, fine, this one was also published earlier this year (in May), but if Stephen King doesn’t make an appearance on your autumn book list, you’re doing it wrong. It’s the perfect time of year to be downright terrified, and King is a master of the craft. The novel follows an Oklahoma detective’s investigation of a murder case, moving from standard procedural to a true horror story. The tale is set to become a miniseries, which leads us to our next category…

Before They Hit the Big Screen

Because Hollywood has apparently run out of ideas, big (and small) screens are full of remakes, superhero blockbusters, and…optioned novels. Luckily for us book lovers of the world, that gives us a leg up when everyone’s talking about these films come awards season—we read the book, you know.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

Ng, who knocked it out of the park with Everything I Never Told You, did it again with 2017’s Little Fires Everywhere. So much so that Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington (queens!) are making it into a miniseries on Hulu (and they’re both executive producers and stars of the show).

Boy Erased: A Memoir by Garrard Conley

Conley’s powerful memoir about growing up gay in fundamentalist Christian Arkansas talks about his experience in gay conversion therapy and the immense harm it caused him. Joel Edgerton wrote, directed, and acts in the film, which also stars Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, and Russell Crowe; it premieres Nov. 2, 2018.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

This 2012 novel is written from the perspective of a 15-year-old girl whose agoraphobic mother, Bernadette, goes missing before a family trip. Cate Blanchett and Billy Crudup are just two members of the star-studded cast of this film, which is set to premiere on March 22, 2019.

My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots by John Guy

This historical fiction novel (heavy on the fiction) follows Mary, Queen of Scots, and her often-contentious relationship with her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. The two queens never met in person, but their relationship—and its outcome—shaped the course of English and Scottish history for centuries. I am what some may call a fanatic about early modern English history, so this novel—and its upcoming film adaptation titled Mary Queen of Scots, starring Saoirse Ronan as Mary and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth—is right up my alley. Regardless of historical accuracy, I can’t wait to dig in.

Stay Informed (and Inspired)

When the weather turns a little colder and a little grayer, it’s easy to get complacent about, well, everything. Do something different this year with these books that will feed your brain—and your soul.

Invisible: How Young Women With Serious Health Issues Navigate Work, Relationships, and the Pressure to Seem Just Fine by Michele Lent Hirsch

It’s a long title, to be sure, but the topic is an important one: 117 million adults have one (or more) chronic health conditions. Women especially are conditioned to zip their lips and stop complaining, even when they’re racked with pain. Hirsch combines her experience with stories from other women, culminating in an important work on misogyny, disability, and trusting your own body.

So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

This nonfiction work from January 2018 covers the reality of racial issues in America today. From police brutality to institutionalized white supremacy, Oluo makes serious issues accessible, offering clarity that can be hard to find in the 24-hour news cycle and heated social media posts.

Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality by Sarah McBride

McBride’s memoir follows her decision to come out as trans to her work as a transgender activist to her personal stories of—as the title notes—love and loss. The foreword from Joe Biden(!) is the cherry on top of an important book that proves that trans rights are human rights.

Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo” by Zora Neale Hurston

Literary giant Zora Neale Hurston died in 1960, but her legacy—that lives on in classrooms across the world—was fortified this May with the release of Barracoon. Starting in 1927, Hurston interviewed Cudjo Lewis, the last African man alive to be taken across the Atlantic in the American slave trade.
In years of interviews, Lewis described his African childhood, the Middle Passage, and his years in slavery before the Civil War. Hurston’s manuscript faded from memory during the Great Depression, was re-discovered in 1977, and was published with the Zora Neale Hurston Trust in May 2018.

How to Get Sh*t Done: Why Women Need to Stop Doing Everything So They Can Achieve Anything by Erin Falconer

With a title like that, I’m definitely in—who doesn’t need a kick in the ass every once in a while? This nonfiction book, focused on productivity and women, looks at why we feel like we don’t have it all when it actually seems like we’re busier than ever. Falconer gives advice and tips for women who want to feel more productive—and do what they really want.

Gmorning, Gnight! Little Pep Talks for Me and You by Lin-Manuel Miranda

The guy who brought Hamilton to life in his award-winning play has earned millions of Twitter followers, thanks in part to his “gmorning” and “gnight” tweets that are full of encouragement, humor, and warmth. Now, in collaboration with Twitter-famous artist Jonny Sun, Miranda is releasing a book of feel-good affirmations to give you comfort morning and night.

The Illustrated Herbiary by Maia Toll

This recommendation comes from Linsey Stevens, herbalism devotee and HealthyWay’s own Associate Editor, who says, “The Illustrated Herbiary is the perfect fall pick because it invites you to get in sync with nature’s ever-changing beauty while tapping into your own aspirations and needs. It doesn’t require a lengthy time commitment; just flip open to any page and enjoy the mystical illustrations and plant-powered wisdom—plus epigraphs from great women including Elizabeth Gilbert, Dolly Parton, and Brené Brown. Once you’re acquainted with the Herbiary, cozy up with some girlfriends and indulge in a little autumnal soothsaying as you put the Herbiary deck (similar to tarot cards) that comes with the book to good use.”

Cozy Classics

I’m all for a brand-new book that’s making the rounds in literary circles and book clubs the world over. But there’s nothing quite like snuggling up with an old classic you’ve read a dozen times—one with well-worn pages and memories of high school English classes past. These are my favorite picks for rainy autumn nights on the couch.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

Dreary English moors. Intense love stories. Tortured, brooding men. Sounds like a slow-burning crime drama on the BBC. But actually, it’s just Brontë’s 19th-century classic. It’s the ultimate in gothic tragedy, and Brontë’s exploration of social class, gender, and morality continues to be relevant 170 years later.

Dracula by Bram Stoker

If you’ve never read Dracula, do yourself a favor and read it. And if you haven’t read Dracula since high school, I recommend it all the same. The book that launched a thousand Twilight fan fiction pieces, Dracula is the fundamental vampire novel. Around Halloween this year, dig into Jonathan Harker’s travels from Transylvania to Whitby, England—it’s way better than trick-or-treating.

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley

Did you know Frankenstein was written by a woman? And, even better, it was written as a contest entry. In the summer of 1816, Lord Byron challenged his friends, writers John Polidori, Mary Shelley, and her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, to a ghost story–writing competition. Mary Shelley’s entry, Frankenstein (which won that contest, btw) has become one of the most enduring horror stories of history. There’s far more depth to the novel than you’ll get out of any film adaptation (though Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein is a delightful follow-up when you’ve had enough horror for one evening).

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

True, this selection isn’t quite on the same playing field as the previous three, but it’s a classic nonetheless. Re-reading as an adult, you might be surprised by how childlike it is—after all, Rowling was writing for young children (at the beginning of the series anyway). But it’s an easy read should you need to kill an afternoon. Plus the combination of back-to-school vibes and fantastical magic are a great trip down memory lane.

I Can Sleep Anywhere. Here Are My Top Tips

I’m basically a professional sleeper. I try to get at least nine hours a night and I nap whenever I can. I can fall asleep whenever, wherever—I’ve fallen asleep on a couch at HealthyWay HQ and in the passenger seat of a car on a 10-minute drive, and I always curl up in my airplane seat and doze off as soon as I sit down.
Despite getting what some people consider an insane amount of sleep, I still used to find myself fatigued. After doing some research, I learned that it’s not just the amount of sleep you get that matters; the way you sleep does too.
Now, I’m a professional sleeper who actually feels refreshed in the morning (well, most days). Here’s how I do it.

Cool down your room.

Research has proven the necessity of thermoneutrality—a state of balance between you and your environment—in sleep. A 1994 study showed that the ideal temperature for sleep is 16° to 19° C (60° to 66° F) if you’ve got pajamas and a light sheet. That means you should seriously cool down your room to get the best sleep. Trust me, there’s no better feeling than having your A/C blasting at 64° while you’re snuggling under a cozy blanket.

Put the phone away.

Blue light is the nemesis of sleep. At least that’s what this letter from Harvard Medical School says. Blue wavelengths, like those emanating from our screens, are seriously disruptive to melatonin secretion and circadian rhythms. So the best thing to do is limit your interaction with screens.
But it’s 2018 and that can feel pretty impossible (no judgment: I work on a computer all day long). So the next best thing is to make use of your phone’s blue light filter or download a dedicated app, like Flux, which will make your screen’s light a little warmer, eliminating some of the blue light issue.

Chill on the caffeine (and alcohol and cigarettes).

It’s both a blessing and a curse that caffeine doesn’t seem to affect me too much—I don’t honestly see too many benefits, but it doesn’t keep me up late either. For many other people, though, that’s not the case. If you find yourself struggling to sleep, start tracking your caffeine intake after noon and consider cutting back—it could be affecting you more than you know.
And while you might be inclined to go for a nightcap if you’re feeling particularly restless, that 1994 study pointed out that although alcohol can act as a “relaxing, sedative agent” if you drink right before bedtime, you might wake up more in the night or not get the quality rest you need, thanks to its activation of your sympathetic nervous system.
As for nicotine, you already know you need to quit—I won’t harp on about it. But as it relates to sleep, the same study said that at high concentrations, it inhibits sleep. (It also said that at low concentrations, it leads to sedation, but I hardly think the risks of nicotine are worth it.)

Make your room a sleeper’s paradise.

This might mean calling in the big guns: blackout curtains, eye masks, white noise machines, ear plugs, fans, and more. Here’s why.

Noise Pollution

A 2000 study in the journal Neuron found that sound stimulates our auditory cortex when we’re awake and during non–rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. (Remember that REM sleep is the really good stuff.) But while some parts of the brain were less activated during sleep than while awake, other parts of the brain were still activated by noise.
This led the researchers to believe that even while we’re sleeping, our brain can process noise stimulation. In order to reduce this brain activity, try employing a white noise machine. A 2005 study from Sleep Medicine showed that “mixed frequency white noise” prevented people from waking up because it masks the difference between normal background noise and any other loud noises.

Light Pollution

It’s important to get outside during the day to keep your circadian rhythm regulated, but when it comes to bedtime, shutting the world out is key. A study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism showed that light in a bedroom suppressed melatonin levels and made subjects’ bodies “think” that night is shorter than it is, meaning they didn’t get as much sleep as they could’ve (or should’ve). The National Sleep Foundation recommends using dim lamps, blackout curtains, and even eye masks when you sleep. This will force your body to fall asleep—and stay that way.

Get your mind right.

My last sleep tip is my favorite tip: Do your nighttime skincare routine. Or pick something else that’s relaxing to you. That might be reading a book or journaling (next to a low-wattage lamp, of course), meditating, taking a warm bath, or doing a light yoga flow.
It’s a trick new parents the world over quickly learn: Having a bedtime routine is an easy way to signal to babies that bedtime is imminent. And while we are grown women who don’t have people tucking us in bed at night, we can still trick the cavewoman parts of our brains into getting ready for sleep by engaging in the same rituals night after night.
Slow, steady, and calm… And then we drift off into dreamland.
Sweet dreams, ladies.

#ottomademyshoes: Buying Shoes From The Root Collective Supports Guatemalan Artisans

‧ ‧ ‧ ‧ ‧

Of all the origin stories a shoe company could have, a trip to a Guatemalan slum seems an unlikely one. But after Bethany Tran visited a friend working for Lemonade International in Guatemala City, she was moved to make a difference, putting the wheels of The Root Collective in motion.

Bethany Tran, founder of The Root Collective
Bethany Tran, founder of The Root Collective

Lemonade International is a non-profit focused on La Limonada, an asentamiento, or slum, of Guatemala City. Like many slums around the world, La Limonada, which is the largest slum in Central America, experiences poverty and gang violence the likes of which most people in the U.S. can’t imagine.
Bethany, who had met some of La Limonada’s 60,000 to 100,000 residents, felt a connection to those people—and knew she had to try to help.
It was on one of these visits that Bethany met a shoemaker named Otto Aceituno. As is common in places of extreme poverty, gang violence is rife in La Limonada, and many residents are either in gangs or their lives are affected by them. By the time Bethany had met Otto, though, he was out of gang life and working as a cobbler at his own shop, Calzado Limonada. Otto, who learned the art of shoemaking when he was 10, employs former gang members, including his son, in his shop.
Otto Aceituno of The Root Collective
Otto Aceituno of The Root Collective

Bethany and Otto went into partnership together and formed The Root Collective to sell handmade shoes. Bethany creates the designs for the shoes, Guatemalan women weave the textiles by hand, and Otto and his team produce each pair—also by hand.
The Root Collective, which launched in November 2013, initially offered a variety of accessories and shoes, but in the years since has narrowed the focus to high-quality shoes hand made by Guatemalan artisans. Now, The Root Collective works with Otto’s shop plus two others—one is a bootmaker who makes all of their boots. The fabric for the shoes is still woven by hand in two weaving cooperatives run by Guatemalan women.
Bethany, who lives with her husband in North Carolina, worked full-time at a Fortune 500 company while developing The Root Collective. Now, in addition to her work with The Root Collective, she works at her own company, Broadview, consulting on brand strategy and marketing. She’s got her hands full, which makes her work with her Central American business partners all the more inspiring. (If she can do it, why can’t we?)
When you buy shoes from The Root Collective, your money is going to help La Limonada residents like Otto and his team. And while there’s no easy answer to the poverty endemic in asentamientos like La Limonada, purchasing thoughtfully is a really great start.

HealthyWay’s Picks From The Root Collective

Each month, The Root Collective highlights a Pair of the Month they’re particularly feeling. In August, that pair is the Gaby in Scarlet—and it’s 25 percent off the entire month! The Gaby is their current flats focus; we especially love it in Mustard and Embroidered Floral.

Boots more your thing? The Lee boot in Noir is made of handwoven cotton and genuine leather, and reviews are effusive to say the least. Their best-selling boot, the Espe, is particularly fresh in Midnight, a luxe brown color made of soft but durable leather.

Q+A With Bethany Tran

What’s your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start your company?

The Root Collective started with a problem. It was a problem that wasn’t being solved, and I couldn’t understand why. A friend of mine moved to Guatemala to be the on-the-ground person for a non-profit she had helped start. They were focused on bringing education and support to a single slum community called La Limonada in Guatemala City. It was amazing work. I went to visit shortly after she moved in 2009.
But I realized quickly that only half the problem was being addressed. You could educate a kid, but if there was no job for them after they graduated, nothing will have changed. That cycle of poverty would continue without jobs to allow people to lift themselves up.

HealthyWay
La Limonada, Guatemala City, Guatemala

These kids came from struggling families. If there’s one thing I’m certain of, it’s that strong families build strong communities. And strong communities build a strong world. That’s the kind of world that I wanted to live in.
These families needed jobs. I kept waiting for someone to do something about it, but no one did.
I knew nothing about starting a business like this. I had a background in marketing, not international development, or product development, or even business administration. I needed to know about seven million things to do this well, and I knew about five of them. I decided to do it anyway.
In 2013, The Root Collective launched. In that time, thousands of women have become part of creating a stronger world with their purchases. Every single pair of shoes fuels those jobs, and every single woman who wears them is changing the world for the better because of it.
HealthyWay
My “why” has morphed through my time from conception until now. It started completely focused on job creation and has now grown to include empowering women to understand how much power they have to create change in the world simply by how they spend their money.
Women control 85 percent of household budgets, which means they control a large portion of the global economy. That’s crazy, right?! What’s so incredible about it is that women are so uniquely positioned to lead the charge to make our world better.
Money talks, and how that money is spent, what companies it’s spent with, and what women are demanding as consumers—that’s huge.

Walk us through your typical workday.

Oh goodness, it doesn’t exist! My days can vary from working on future designs, problem solving production issues in Guatemala, doing Facebook Live chats with other women boss babes, packing orders (yes, CEOs get to do the everyday standard work sometimes too!), updating our website, or doing interviews like this.
Every single day is different, which is part of what I love about my job. I thrive off change.

What’s up next for your company?

We are currently working on expanding our product offering. We are in the design and sampling phase for Summer 2019 right now, and I’m super excited for what we’re hoping to be able to do.
HealthyWay

If you had to pick just one of your products as your favorite, which would it be and why?

This is a trick question, right? If I had to pick JUST one to wear for the rest of my life, it would be the Espe in Slate bootie. This was one of our original boots and is still one of our best sellers. I love the color combination of the luscious chestnut colored leather with the tan and gray handwoven fabric.
Plus, they’re so comfortable. They are one of my on-my-feet-all-day, walking-around-the-city shoes.

Five-Minute Mentor

What’s your best advice for our readers?

Be brave. Be curious. Be persistent. The best things in life are hard, but so worth it.

What was your lightbulb moment, where all the hard work felt totally worth it?

When I started seeing other women be inspired by what I was doing. I don’t say that to sound conceited (I realize it does!), but I get so excited seeing women be brave and do the things that get them excited, when they realize that they are capable.
I say all the time that if I can do this, so can you. I didn’t have any kind of leg up starting this business. I had zero clue what I was doing, had no connections, no background in fashion or product development. So truly, if I can do this, you are more than capable of doing what it is that makes your heart flutter.
HealthyWay

What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?

Reading by some kind of body of water! The beach, the pool, a lake…water relaxes me so much, and I love getting lost in a story.
A good massage doesn’t hurt either.

Balance or harmony?

I’ve never heard it put that way, but harmony 100 percent. Balance does feel like a myth most days.

How do you define wellness?

The perfect combination of emotional, physical, and spiritual health. I think if you can manage some semblance of those things, you’ll find joy, even when life is hard.
It’s easy to focus on physical well-being, but I’m learning more and more how emotional and spiritual health are key to a fulfilled life.

What book do you think all women need to read?

When Breath Becomes Air. It’s a memoir written by a brilliant neurosurgeon while he was dying from a brain tumor. I realize it sounds super depressing, but it’s a book about really living. In my top three favorite books of all time (even if I did read it on a beach trip and bawled my eyes out sitting in the sand).
HealthyWay

Pick your fuel of choice: coffee, tea, or something else?

Okay, this is weird, but coffee, even though I only drink like quarter caff. I backed off caffeine a few years ago, but I still love the habit of drinking my coffee in the morning.

What’s your ideal day off of work?

Beach trip with my husband and a book

What was your first job?

I was a dance teacher for 10 years. I started teaching the summer I turned 16. Kind of crazy for a first job, but I loved it so much and still miss it.

What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company?

Just one? Goodness. Our biggest obstacle is still manufacturing. We are working with small batch makers, most of whom had generational training. Which means they were taught by their parents and grandparents. I love that so much, but it’s posed significant challenges. Since there was no formal training, they tend to do things how they do things, and that’s not always the best way.
I had zero background in making shoes (and shoes are by far the most complicated thing you wear). I’ve had to learn as I go so I could help solve problems as they came up in our manufacturing. It’s still a struggle, but we’re all learning every day how to improve.

How do you stay motivated?

Frankly, I want my life to matter. On the days when it feels impossible, I remember that. I want to leave the world a better place than how I found it. Not to get all YOLO, but it’s true. I want to go to my grave knowing that I loved my family well, that I served other people, and that I was able to inspire others to do the same. Is there anything else to life?

Karité's Shea Butter Skincare Is Good For You (And The World)

Out of Office is a regular feature of brands we love—and we think you will too! Each of the brands we highlight must meet three criteria: 1) have a woman (or three!) in charge; 2) create sustainably, responsibly, and thoughtfully; and 3) fit in with the lives we’re actually living. Read on to find out more about this week’s brand, the ladies behind it all, and the advice they have for women everywhere.

‧ ‧ ‧ ‧ ‧

Women of color supporting women of color by creating a product that’s great for everyone? That’s something we’re 100 percent on board with, hence our pick for this week’s feature: Karité.
Karité (which means shea in French) is a shea butter–packed skincare brand based in New York City, founded by three sisters from Ghana. Though their offerings may be limited to just two products (for now!), their body butter and hand cream have been expertly designed. If you’re feeling skeptical, thinking that there are plenty of body lotions on the market, rest assured that Karité’s founders know what they’re talking about.
After all, they’re pretty closely tied to their creams’ formulas: Both the body butter and hand cream were designed by co-founder and CEO Naana Boakye, MD. Yep, one of the co-founders is a dermatologist, and she’s the one who develops their products (she also runs her own dermatology practice just outside NYC).
Lest you think that’s the only trick these sisters have up their sleeves for Karité, there’s more—a lot more: Abena Slowe, Karité’s chief operating officer, is a lawyer in New York, while chief creative officer Akua Okunseinde has years of experience in sales, marketing, and finance (most recently for Google). Oh, and they’re all moms. Talk about badass.

Akua Okunseinde, Abena Slowe, and Naana Boakye of Karité Skincare
Akua Okunseinde, Abena Slowe, and Naana Boakye of Karité Skincare

Naana, Abena, and Akua are from Ghana, and growing up, they had access to some truly incredible products. Their favorite moisturizers were chock full of shea butter—an ingredient indigenous to Africa (and primarily farmed by women). But when they moved to the U.S., they were hard-pressed to find creams that lived up to their standards; the products they found were often full of highly processed, refined shea butters. They knew they could do better, thanks especially to Naana’s dermatology expertise.
Karité’s body butter and hand cream are hypoallergenic and free of artificial dyes, parabens, silicones, and pointless fillers that sit on top of the skin. Instead, they’re packed with raw, unrefined shea butter, sustainably sourced palm oil, and unrefined organic coconut oil. They worked with Ghanaian vendors to find the highest quality ingredients to bring to America. And in the process, Karité is helping support the more than 600,000 Ghanaian women who depend on shea butter production for their income.
While this shea butter production is good for devotees of Karité’s products and for the bank accounts of Ghanaian women, it isn’t always so great for the environment. That’s why Karité is a member of the Global Shea Alliance, a non-profit association based in Ghana that works to promote sustainability around shea butter production, developing environmentally friendly best practices, and setting industry quality standards across the world.
I use Karité’s products, and my dry skin is a huge fan. (See why below!) But in 2018, our purchasing power can be political, and it feels good to support a company owned by women of color in a time when, astoundingly, that in itself can be controversial.
That Karité’s ingredients are thoughtfully chosen, sustainably sourced, and add to the livelihoods of Ghanaian women and their families is just another reason to support Naana, Abena, and Akua and companies like theirs. Keep it up, ladies; HealthyWay is cheering you on.

Karité Product Spotlight

In need of hydration from head to toe? Well, Karité’s Crème Corps Hydrating Body Cream’s combination of shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, and herbs—all sustainably sourced, of course—is gentle enough for everyday use while also being effective on particularly rough bits. (Head, elbows, knees, and toes, anyone?)
On the other hand, if you just need a product to throw in your purse and put on every single hour (I’m guilty!), the Crème Mains hand cream is your girl. It’s formulated particularly for the hands, which can dry out easily from hand-washing, cleaning, and general life. This cream is also formulated with ingredients that are ideal for sensitive skin.

Q+A with Naana Boakye, Abena Slowe, and Akua Okunseinde

What is your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start your company?

Naana: Our family roots are in Ghana, West Africa, where much of the shea butter you know and love is sourced from. Our family has used shea butter in its raw form as a daily moisturizer for as long as we can remember. While raw, unrefined shea butter is the ultimate moisturizer for your skin, it’s quite difficult to spread on the skin. We would often mix the shea butter with over-the-counter lotion to make it easier to spread. This is when we had the idea to make our own all-natural version of liquid shea butter.
Based on what I’ve learned in my practice, I was confident about the type of formulation we would need but knew it would take time to perfect. We started brainstorming about starting this brand back in 2013 and officially launched in February 2017.

Karité Shea Butter Skincare

Walk us through your typical work day.

Abena: We really don’t have a “typical” work day—every day is different since we are a start-up.  There are a lot of moving parts, and it can be crazy and chaotic at times. When we are working on the brand, our time is spent on customer orders, managing and expanding our retail and wellness partnerships, social media, communicating with bloggers and magazines on features, and strategizing about the vision and future of the brand.

What’s up next for Karité?

Akua: Our key focus has and always will be our products, specifically ingredients that we source to provide maximum hydration for our customers’ skin. We have some ideas of what products we want to add to our line, but we are constantly researching to make sure that we make the right determination. We are not trying to have a ton of products all at once—we find that being deliberate and intentional with a slow rollout is working well.
We are also expanding our retail brand partnerships within the U.S. We love the fact that so many indie beauty stores are cropping up and really loving what we have to offer. We look forward to collaborating with those that share a similar mission to ours.
Akua Okunseinde of Karité gives her best advice.

Tell us about Karité’s products!

Abena: We currently have two products available: Crème Corps Hydrating Body Cream and Crème Mains Hand Cream, and both are really incredible and have been well received.
The hand cream is great because it’s the perfect size to carry in your purse and it’s also TSA compliant so you can take it with you when you travel. Your skin gets extremely dry on airplanes, so it’s important to stay moisturized. Our hand cream is lighter in texture and leaves your hands feeling hydrated but not at all greasy and also has a light pleasant smell.
Our body cream has been extremely popular because it feels so rich with its thicker consistency, yet it’s super smooth and hydrating when you rub it into your skin. A little goes a long way.
Because we focused on making sure our products are non-toxic, they are great for the entire family. We use both products on our kids all the time!

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start a small business?

Akua: Perseverance, patience, and being open-minded are key. It’s easy to come up with an idea and bring it to fruition, but marketing, selling, and dealing with the day-to-day is pretty challenging.
Sometimes you take a step forward but then end up taking two steps back. It’s the nature of being a small business. But we are starting to see things fall into place in a very positive way due to our perseverance and patience.

What was your lightbulb moment, where all the hard work felt totally worth it?

Naana: In the very beginning, you try to market pretty widely to become known because there are so many brands in the beauty space. Pretty soon after we launched, we got, and have continued to get, incredibly positive feedback on our brand from press, customers, and retailers!
When someone tells you that they heard about your brand or saw your brand in a magazine or in a store, that feeling just never gets old. It’s pretty amazing.

What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?

Abena: In terms of routine, everything shifted when I had my second child about 9 months ago, so my intention has been to try to adopt a more consistent self-care practice. For now, it’s finding a bit of alone time, even if it’s only for 10 minutes, sleeping in a bit over the weekend, or going for a walk around the neighborhood. I also practice breathing exercises, which forces me to focus and calm my energy. Eventually, once I have a decent sleep routine back, I plan to get back to distance running.
Naana: I also have two kids, and being a mom often means putting yourself last. Over the last year and a half, I have made it a point to really take the time to focus on myself because I’ve found that overall it’s made me more focused, healthier, and happier. I’m an early riser and I take advantage of that aspect of myself. I try to hit the gym 4 to 5 times a week first thing in the morning around 5 a.m. I lift weights and really enjoy the group classes at my gym because of the great energy. I also try to eat a well-balanced diet leaning heavily towards plant-based. (But I still indulge in sweets!) I also love going to church on Sundays with my family.
Akua: I’m a new mom! I had my first child 5 months ago, so it’s been pretty life-changing for me and I am also trying to get into a more consistent self-care routine. I definitely cherish some alone time, sneaking in a nap during the day to recharge or soaking in a bath for some calm.

Balance or harmony?

Abena: Haha, is there such a thing? But seriously, it’s something I think we all constantly strive for. I think there are moments of balance but with all we have going on, it’s hard to constantly feel balanced.
Abena Slowe of Karité talks balance vs. harmony.
Harmony speaks better to my mindset—you can try to manage things in your life in a way that causes the least amount of stress and makes you content. There also needs to be flexibility because it’s different every day. Some days you may be more tipped one way versus the other, but that’s okay.

How do you define wellness?

Naana: It’s so many things, and it’s a full-body experience, both spiritual and physical. It’s being confident and feeling good about yourself, it’s taking care of your body and being mindful of what you put in it and what you expose it to. It’s taking the time to uplift and be compassionate to someone every day.
Some people may not think of skincare as part of wellness, but it very much is and that is what we are trying to teach our consumers. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and you have to be mindful of what you expose it to. It’s important to take a deep look at your beauty cabinet because studies have shown that many skincare products contain irritating chemicals that cause skin conditions such as rashes, itching, and cracked skin. Be kind to your skin and your body and strive to use natural and non-toxic products.

What book do you think all women need to read?

Abena: I have enjoyed reading Own Your Glow by Latham Thomas. It’s a really inspiring book that pushes you to focus on wellness, self-awareness, and self-love. Anyone who is struggling, who is looking for more self-care tips and wisdom—or if you just need some uplifting and a confidence-booster—this book is perfect for that.
We live in some pretty crazy times right now, so I think this is a must-read for all women. I’ve had the honor of meeting Latham a few times, and she is truly such a sweetheart, is full of so much love and light, and does such good work for women. All of that translates in her book.

Pick your fuel of choice: coffee, tea, or something else (if so, what?).

Naana: Latte. I need two shots and mixed with milk. If I don’t start my day with that I’m not coherent.

Naana Boakye, chief executive officer of Karité
Naana Boakye, chief executive officer of Karité

Abena: Hard to choose, but I rotate through lattes, matcha lattes, flat whites, green tea, and chamomile tea. It all depends on my mood.
Akua: I go back and forth between coffee and tea. Since I don’t get much sleep these days, I definitely love treating myself to a good latte in the morning.

What’s your ideal day off of work?

Naana: It’s funny because we are all moms, we feel like we are always “on” even when we have a day off. But my ideal day off would be a workout in the morning, followed up by an incredible massage at a spa. After a good lunch, curl up on the couch and enjoy a book near a window.
Abena: Take a nice long walk in the morning or go for a run, then catch up with a friend over coffee/breakfast. Relax at home with a book or watch a movie. And take a nap!
Akua: I’m currently on maternity leave, and I’m cherishing that I get to spend this time with my baby. I know many women struggle with their employers having little or sometimes no maternity leave at all. Right now my ideal day off would consist of catching up on sleep. Otherwise a nice lunch and spa treatment would be great!

What was your first job?

Naana: I worked in an administrative office at college making copies. It was great because I learned all about time management, which is a skill set that I use every day.
Abena: I was a sales associate at a women’s clothing store, so I had a lot of interaction with customers.
Naana Boakye of Karité explains that it's not supposed to be easy.
Akua: I was a camp counselor for 3- and 4-year-olds. It was exhausting but I have always loved kids so really loved my job!

What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company and how did you overcome it?

Naana: The biggest obstacle is that there is no roadmap or cookbook to starting a small business. In medicine and in law, there are protocols. Starting Karité took a lot of research and learning a lot about business beyond the formulations and beyond the beauty industry. We have faced a variety of obstacles.
Being that we are a family business, it was hard to give up control and delegate certain areas of the business to others, but there were some aspects that we just did not know how to do and it made more sense to bring on people who could handle those aspects of the business more efficiently.

Abena Slowe, chief operating officer of Karité
Abena Slowe, chief operating officer of Karité

When starting a business, there are always many obstacles and roadblocks and it can be frustrating—you have to decide whether you are going to throw in the towel or push through the challenge. We are extremely happy with our brand and the direction it’s going in, but it’s not easy. And it’s not supposed to be easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it.

How do you stay motivated?

Akua: Some people ask how we like working with each other—we love it. We have always been close and we get along incredibly well. It helps that we also have similar taste in pretty much everything. But we do each have our particular strengths, which keeps us motivated and keeps our bond stronger.
Also, every time we get feedback that someone has fallen in love with our brand, it just reinforces to us that we have made really good products and we want to keep growing.

Lali Kids, The Fair Trade Clothing Brand Made For Little Girls Everywhere

Out of Office is a regular feature of brands we love—and we think you will too! Each of the brands we highlight must meet three criteria: 1) have a woman in charge; 2) create sustainably, responsibly, and thoughtfully; and 3) fit in with the lives we’re actually living. Read on to find out more about this week’s brand, the lady behind it all, and the advice she has for women everywhere.

‧ ‧ ‧ ‧ ‧

Lali Kids was a natural choice for our first Out of Office feature. HealthyWay is a St. Louis-based company, so we’re always excited to shout out brands from our hometown! Lali Kids, which was founded in St. Louis in 2013, is a fresh, sustainable clothing brand for girls 6 months through 12 years old.
The company is named after a nickname founder Kinnari McDevitt’s grandmother used to call her: Lali, which means “little darling” in Hindi. Now, McDevitt focuses on creating playful clothing for little darlings everywhere, with silhouettes and prints inspired by her childhood in India.

HealthyWay
Kinnari McDevitt, founder of Lali Kids

McDevitt, a former engineer and a self-described obsessive of artisan textiles, is the brand’s chief designer: She hand-draws each print herself! Occasionally, she’ll find artisan textiles, like hand-woven jacquards, in markets in India that they can use as well; she says, “It’s all about layering different textures and colors to tell a story.”
The prints are then set by a print designer and screen-printed by hand, leading to playful imperfections and unique details in every piece. The workers in their primary factory in India are mothers whose work with Lali allows them to earn a fair, living wage and spend time with their families—Lali is an example of clothing that’s good for everyone involved.
On this side of the world, McDevitt and her team of just three employees are responsible for design, prototyping, shipment, and marketing in their St. Louis studio. The brand, which launched their first collection in 2015, has come a long way in just a few short years. You can now buy Lali clothing at more than 60 retailers in six countries, including Anthropologie(!), and they’re working on their AW 2018 collection, which will include their first little boys’ line.
Lali perfectly combines one-of-a-kind fabrics, fresh Americana style, and fun pops of color reminiscent of saris in Indian markets in dozens of pieces you’ll feel good putting your little darling in.

HealthyWay’s Picks from Lali Kids

We love this sweet Maggie dress (great name, by the way) in Blue Jambdani; its swingy silhouette is perfect for running around on hot summer evenings. Have a smaller darling? The Baby Ari set in Blue Jambdani uses the blue fabric from the dress and couples it with hot pink bloomers. This pair would be perfect for a big/little sis photo!
This tea-length Chloe dress has an open back, making it ideal for a cool breeze. Pair with the matching Sailor Bow clip for the sweetest outfit you ever did see.
If your girl’s the type to play hard, get her into the Embroidery shorts in peach or chambray to pair with whatever shirt she grabs that day. Or scoop up the Polly playsuit, which will look adorable over a onesie or t-shirt or all by itself.
Don’t forget the accessories: Their tassel bracelets come in blue, green, and pink so you’ve got all your bases covered. We also love the Jacquard purses for holding little treasures; we’re particularly partial to Aqua Dot.

Q+A with Kinnari McDevitt

What’s your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start Lali Kids?

I worked as an engineer for a big corporation and felt miserably uninspired with the routine and structure of it. I had an undying thirst for creativity that was not being quenched.
My childhood was spent in India, where the textiles and artisan crafts are like none other, and right around the time I got married, my husband and I made the trip back to that gorgeous country. That’s when it all clicked.
I felt that there was a gap in the children’s market for clothing made of unique artisan textiles. I didn’t even have kids at this point, but I wanted to bring the beauty of my own childhood into the U.S. market.
And, you know, be my own boss.

Walk us through your typical workday.

Our work days vary a lot depending on where we are with a collection. Most days, I wake up with my 2-year-old son’s happy chatter as my husband is getting ready to leave for work. I have my morning chai and get the little guy ready for school.
Alex, my design editor (and best friend), drops him off while I start calling our manufacturers in India. I deal with our supply chain, design, and production, and she takes care of shipments, prototyping, and a bit of everything else! One minute we’re planning a color palette, the next we’re greeting the FedEx driver and reviewing samples from India.
HealthyWay
Lunchtime is very important to us, and I am usually the chef for all of our meals. After the break, I go pick up my son from school and while he takes his afternoon nap, Alex and I try to get more work done. We wrap up our day around dinner time, my son goes to bed, and I head back into the studio.
Working in the quiet of the night is really productive and relaxing for me. I feel like I can focus more and get design work done efficiently. I try to make it to bed before midnight, but if inspiration strikes, sleep is secondary.

What’s up next for Lali?

Oh gosh…I have lots of ideas on what we want to do next. We have started to do some production in the U.S. and would really love to have a big studio space which could accommodate that. I would love to create an artisan studio where creative people can come and work—not just us, but a variety of women.
We would someday love to launch a women’s clothing line. After a few visits to the splash park this summer, I’ve got inklings of developing a swim line as well. I want to do all these things tomorrow, but they will all happen in their own time.

If you had to pick just one of your products as your favorite, which would it be and why?

Our Midi Dress style, hands down. This silhouette was based on one of my own dresses that I had made custom made on a trip to India—and then had it scaled down for little girls. Long flowing dresses are what I’m all about.
We’ve carried this design through several summer collections now, and it’s always a customer favorite. It’s just so comfortable and playful.

What’s your best advice for our readers?

If you have a dream to create something, just get started. Take the first step and don’t worry about the big picture.
I never in a million years thought I would own a fashion business. I think when you are reaching out into the world with a lot of passion in your heart, the universe conspires to help you make it into a reality.
Also, if you don’t ask, the answer will always be no. If you don’t take a step forward, you will be in the same place. So take the leap.

What was your lightbulb moment, where all the hard work felt totally worth it?

I try to remind myself daily that starting this company is a journey and where we are today is not where we were a few days, months, or years ago. However, when Anthropologie contacted us and started carrying our products, it was a really big validation that we had something unique to offer.
HealthyWay

What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?

Ha! Lots of sleep. My goal this summer was to wear clothing that’s artisan made instead of fast fashion and I have found some really inspiring designers. As a mom I try to keep my wardrobe simple, small, and easy to wear.
Occasional massages and pedicures are also really nice. Oh! And actually finishing my cup of tea—half the time I brew a lovely mug of joy and then get busy and forget all about it.

Balance or harmony?

Definitely harmony. I feel like balance is this elusive creature that you have a sighting of once in a while but it never really sticks around. I try to create and look for harmony in all things: where we work, how we organize our lives, and how we design the collection. It should all feel organic and not forced. I feel you lose a sense of harmony when you are pushing too hard for things to work together.

HealthyWay
Lali Kids

How do you define wellness?

Wellness to me is not about achieving perfection. It’s a day spent doing things at a healthy pace where you have been kind to yourself and others. It’s also about nourishing your body with good food and mind with inspiring environment. Sometimes these things seem a world away, but if you can at least get a nice meal in your belly, you’re doing something right.

What book do you think all women need to read?

A Vindication of the Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft. It’s reflective of the female experience and reminds us that our concerns are valid and this isn’t a new fight.

Pick your fuel of choice: coffee, tea, or something else (if so, what?).

Harney & Sons Irish Breakfast Tea, for sure! Iced coffee only when I haven’t gotten enough sleep.

What’s your ideal day off of work?

This is about to sound like the least exciting thing, but I love being at home with my family. It’s nice when my husband takes over the morning baby duties and lets me sleep in.
Also family naps are THE BEST—we eat a big brunch and all pass out for about three hours. That stuff is glorious. Just slowing down as a family and enjoying each other’s company is really nice.

What was your first job?

Oh, this is so nerdy. I was a librarian aid. I taught retired people how to use the internet in the Chicago suburbs.

HealthyWay
Lali Kids

What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company, and how did you overcome it?

My background is in engineering, so learning how the fashion business works was a significant challenge. It’s one thing to create cute clothes, but a whole different challenge to market and sell it to the right customer. It’s important to try new things, see what works, and not be afraid of failure. I am still learning a lot every day. We still have a long way to go before we can say we know all we need to know!

How do you stay motivated?

Watching our little customers enjoy the clothes we create is what keeps us going. There is so much hard work that goes into a collection, sometimes you forget that your product will even be worn by actual people. It’s really rewarding to see boutique buyers and customers get excited about details that we lost so much sleep over.
