Alison Wu Of Wu Haus

This week’s Healthy Her Way feature is wellness guru and matcha maven Alison Wu.
Stylist and blogger Alison is all about healthy living; she focuses on eating a plant-forward diet that includes fresh, organic, and local (where possible) ingredients, and if you’ve seen the inside of her fridge—a Smeg that’s in the dreamiest kitchen ever—or pantry, you’ve probably felt some serious envy. How can someone eat like that all the time? Well, luckily for readers, Alison also develops recipes on her blog, Wu Haus—and most of them are actually way simpler than they look! Her incredible layered smoothies and colorful bowls are way attainable and have definitely served as inspiration when I am dragging myself to the kitchen to cook dinner.
Alison is open, though, about the times she doesn’t make choices she loves for herself, like when she’s not eating food that’s exactly fit for the ’gram or when she struggles with self-love. In March, she wrote this candid nugget about her Instagram feed: “Everything I share here is an authentic expression of who I am and what I love, but is by no means a full picture of my life. When I’m stressed or overworked, sometimes I skip meals or make poor decisions like eating a piece of toast for dinner like I did on Saturday night. This whole weekend, I was so focused on other things that I let healthy eating fall to the wayside.” Been there, sis.
Feeds full of picture-perfect shots sometimes feel unrelatable, but if you read Alison’s captions or her blog posts, you’ll quickly see that she actually shares a lot about the parts of her life that some people hold closer to the chest: thoughts on marriage and friendships, her wellness journey, selfies with skincare issues, and honest accounts of when she feels she didn’t do her best that day.
As she wrote on that post in March, “I slip up. I make bad decisions. I neglect self care. I let my impulses take control. I am human.” What’s more relatable than that?

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

My husband and I usually end our days around 6:30 p.m. and begin prepping dinner to our favorite playlist of the moment. Eating nutrient-dense, nourishing meals is incredibly important to us. I’m a big proponent for understanding what your body needs and feeding it accordingly. For example, in times of heightened stress or anxiety, we’ll cook warming, grounding foods that balance the chakra—muladhara or root—to bring us back down to earth.
My husband usually helps me cook, and we chat about our days. To begin the unwinding process, I’ll prepare a cup of calming tea using herbs like chamomile, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, lemon balm, and cinnamon, which all have comforting effects on the nervous system. I use tea time to unplug from my phone and computer and focus my attention on the present moment, read an inspirational book, or write in my journal.
Creating a bathtime ritual is one of my favorite ways to practice self-care. I love making over-the-top baths with florals, citrus, and crystals and really taking the time to relax my body and my mind. I’ll skim through a book of poetry or just close my eyes and let my senses take over. I love to prepare a castor oil pack with a stress-relieving essential oil blend and apply it for 20 to 30 minutes while lying in bed reading a book or catching up on the news.
One of my intentions for 2018 was less scrolling, more page turning, so it’s important for me to disconnect from my phone before bed in order to fully relax.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

  • Slowing down and listening to my inner voice
  • 3 liters of water a day
  • 8 hours of sleep a night
  • Quality time with people that bring me joy

How do you stay inspired?

I’m constantly gathering inspiration from my surroundings: nature, shapes, texture, interiors, fashion, fantasy. If I’m going through a period of feeling uninspired (like we all do), I try to be gentle with myself, remind myself that inspiration ebbs and flows. There’s so much in the world to be inspired by. Honestly, sometimes it’s overwhelming! A lot of times I find getting quiet, disconnecting from technology, and immersing myself in nature inspires me the most.

What is your bucket list travel destination?

Well, I just got back from Puglia, Italy, and that’s all I can think about. Next maybe India or Australia.

Would you rather explore space or the ocean? Why?

Space. Seeing all the plastic in the ocean would make me depressed.

What’s your coffee order?

All about the matcha! My favorite is the one I make at home with coconut butter, collagen, adaptogens, cardamom, and ½ a Medjool date.

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

Our thoughts shape our reality. I always keep that in mind, especially when I’m feeling down and find myself in a cycle of negative thinking.

Meet Skinno, The App That Wants To Tell You What's In Your Skincare

Aqua. Propylene glycol. Aloe barbadensis leaf juice. Phenoxyethanol. Fucus vesiculosus extract. These are all ingredients of the closest skincare product to my desk right now (Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray—rosewater version, obv).
But what are those things? Aqua: water—got it. Aloe barbadensis: aloe vera is good! The rest? Not so sure. Some of them sound pretty chemical-y, and I never did too well in chemistry class. That extract though, that’s probably good, right?
And herein lies the problem with skincare: Most people don’t know what’s in their products. And even if they’ve heard of some of the product’s ingredients, the average consumer doesn’t know what those ingredients do. Or if they’re effective for their skin type. Or if they’re even all that safe.
You’ve likely heard various reasons we should avoid synthetic chemicals: If you can’t pronounce it, don’t use it! That ingredient is a chemical! Chemicals are used to clean toilet bowls! (Nevermind the fact that even plain old water is a chemical substance—effectively, everything is, in fact.) This fear of chemicals, often termed “chemophobia,” is misguided at best, as plenty of researchers attest.
Still, the cultural trend toward safety via nature has led to an industry-wide movement—which is a bit misleading given the fact that “natural” means zilch to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates (but doesn’t approve) cosmetics and skincare in America. That term, and some others like “clean” or “green,” aren’t actually regulated at all. While the FDA does ban intentionally false or misleading packaging, it’s the responsibility of the manufacturers to act in good faith when it comes to what can be put on the front of products.
So what’s a consumer to do?
This is a problem Lisa Guerrera has been researching for years. A self-described skincare junkie, Guerrera is a chemist focused on the science of skincare. She did her undergraduate thesis on chemophobia, and now she’s pursuing her master’s in cosmetic engineering and building Skinno, an app aimed at educating consumers about ingredients in their products.
Most consumers have difficulty decoding ingredients and their applications. Guerrera, Skinno’s founder and CEO, realized that this lack of knowledge—combined with the largely unregulated cosmetics industry—leads consumers to make decisions about products based on marketing and scare tactics instead of concentrating on ingredients.
Guerrera co-founded Skinno with Christina Torres, whose background is in biology and science communication, in October 2017. The app, which has been in development since February, uses a scanner to read ingredient labels and break down what’s in your product and what those ingredients do. The app’s searchable ingredient database is entirely sourced by Torres, who has professional experience with biological databases; she personally researches each ingredient and writes consumer-friendly descriptions. Skinno also has a Routines feature to help users remember to actually use their products.
As the Skinno team develops the app further, they’re focusing on personalizing users’ skincare experiences: What does your skin need and why? What are the best ingredients to achieve that and why?
We hopped on the chance to speak with Guerrera about the app and how it can help consumers navigate the current skincare market.

HealthyWay: I love the idea of knowing what each ingredient in my products is used for. What’s your ultimate goal for Skinno?

Guerrera: Ultimately we want people to be educated about their products before they buy them. Consumers have the right to easy access to scientifically accurate information about products, and we know Skinno will be able to help with that through instant education and personalization.

What can ingredients tell us about our skincare products?

Ingredients can tell us a lot! These days, a lot of products are marketed based off of some “miracle” ingredient that will cure all our skin woes, but in reality, if you look up the ingredient, there is no real research backing up those claims. Ingredients can tell us if a product is really doing what it’s claiming to do for our skin.

What should people be paying attention to when they’re buying their skincare?

Definitely pay attention to what’s at the top of the ingredients list. Those are the most concentrated ingredients in a product. So if a product is claiming certain things, you would want the ingredient that will do the thing to be toward the top. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but it’s overall a good rule of thumb.
People should definitely pay attention if they have a known allergy or sensitivity to an ingredient. Sometimes ingredients can be called a different name, but it’s still the same ingredient. So it’s important for people to pay attention to the label to make sure the product doesn’t contain allergens. Skinno will actually alert you if an ingredient you’re allergic to is in a product!

Are ingredients with names we can’t pronounce or things that are “chemical-y” necessarily bad? What about ingredients we notice all the time or ingredients that are “natural”? How can Skinno help users tell the difference?

Everyone has heard the rule, “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t put it on your skin!” But that is so wrong! There are tons of amazing ingredients in skincare with long, complicated names or names that are unfamiliar. Just because something “sounds” like a chemical doesn’t mean it’s bad for you. The idea that chemicals are “bad” stems from the societal phenomena of “chemophobia,” or fear of chemicals. We are conditioned to be wary of unfamiliar chemicals or anything that sounds chemical-like. With Skinno, my hope is we can educate people to know that just because it sounds scary, doesn’t mean it is!
Natural ingredients are interesting … They don’t really exist. Natural has no meaning or definition under the FDA, so companies can label pretty much any product as “natural.” So even ingredients that are “naturally derived,” usually from source plants or other means, are usually put though many chemical processes before arriving in your skincare bottle. This by no means makes them worse; I just want people to see that there isn’t much of a difference just because something is labeled natural.

How can skincare junkies know what’s best for their skin, besides trial and error? How do you see Skinno helping them?

The best way to mitigate trial and error when it comes to product choice is to make educated decisions before purchase. Being a skincare junkie myself, and someone on a budget, I research every product as much as possible before I decide to buy it. Skinno can really help people with this task. Instead of taking hours to do research on every product, you can just scan to see what each ingredient does and, in the future, if it will actually work for your skin type. Certain ingredients can work better for certain skin types, and we can help you decipher that!

Skincare is really having a moment. Why are you building this app now?

Honestly, it was just good timing! I’ve always loved skincare, and the opportunity to build this app fell into my lap, so to speak. But I really felt people were craving more information about the products they use every day. Ingredient consciousness is on the rise, especially in skincare, which is uniquely chemistry-driven and difficult to dissect. I wanted to help people become smarter consumers.

Tell us more about the app’s tech! The scanning feature is one of the coolest things I’ve seen and reminds me a lot of technology I’ve only seen in shopping apps or on Google Translate.

Yes exactly! So we are using optical character recognition or OCR technology to literally read ingredient labels with your smartphone camera. It’s the same tech Google Translate uses; we’re applying it to ingredient labels. This means that if a product is not in our database or doesn’t have a barcode, you can still scan it and get a readout on the ingredients, which is totally unique to our app!
We do have a barcode scanner just in case the ingredients aren’t on the product. We’re also launching the app with machine learning in September, so the app will learn about you and your skin over time to give you personal recommendations.

Right now, the app is in beta. What can beta testers expect from the experience?

So right now the app can only give you simple ingredient explanations, and you can use the routine feature and be able to flag ingredients you like and ingredients you’re allergic to or don’t like. But we’re pushing new updates to the app every few days with improvements and fixes. Users will basically get a glimpse into how an app is really made. They will see us grow a lot in the next few months. All the features in there now are very basic, but they are stepping stones to help us get to the final version of the app. We always ask users to give us as much feedback as possible. We’re building this for you!

What features are you hoping to incorporate as you further develop the app?

Our biggest project is the complete personalization of the app. We want to be able to give easy-to-understand, simple, and personal skincare recommendations to users, instantly. That means when you’re shopping and scan a product with Skinno, we can tell you immediately if we think this product is worth the purchase based on multiple factors such as skin type, your environment, and budget, to name a few!
To do this, we will be using machine learning and a skin type quiz (that we’re developing right now) to learn about the user over time. The other big feature is product comparison. We can automatically compare the ingredients so you know whether to splurge or save!

What challenges have you faced creating this app?

We face a lot of challenges since we’re building a product using technology that’s never been applied to this space. Definitely the biggest challenges we face are building out an extensive database with ingredients verified by science literature. It takes a long time to truly research each ingredient. Next is our OCR scanner: Round bottles or shiny packaging can be challenging, so we are in the process of creating our own technology to read special packaging. Lastly is automating something so personal! We have to consider skincare and people’s preferences from all angles, so I talk to a lot of people about skincare daily.
Both Christina and I are women in science, a sometimes difficult position to be in professionally, but getting better every year thanks to amazing initiatives. But now we are also women in tech, a notoriously hard industry to get into, especially knowing that only 3 percent of companies backed by Venture Capital Investment are women-owned. We’ve definitely had people doubt us, ignore us, and assume we didn’t have the knowledge to execute this, but that only makes us work harder and smarter. We also have amazing mentors that have believed in us from the start, so that has been very encouraging.

Can you tell us about your personal skincare journey?

My skincare journey has been a long and very difficult road. Since I was 12 I’ve dealt with cystic acne, a severe type of acne that comes in the form of very painful, long-lasting cysts on the skin. I tried so many products, went to many dermatologists, and over the years developed my knowledge on skincare via trial and error, reading, googling, and getting my degree in chemistry and learning formulation. I even remember at multiple points in my life looking at my face in the mirror and actually crying because of all the painful cysts. I still have acne today, but thankfully it isn’t as bad now because I found it was hormonal acne and took the steps to get treated for it. Now I focus on acne scar reduction and keeping my dry skin moisturized.

What are your favorite ingredients?

That’s such a hard question these days! Definitely a favorite is ceramides. Such an amazing ingredient to have in a moisturizer. Another is lactic acid: It’s a gentle yet effective exfoliant that’s great for dry skin like mine.

What are your favorite products right now?

Products I’m loving are the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser; it’s been my holy grail cleanser for years. Next is the Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream, a new favorite moisturizer. Lastly, the e.l.f. Cosmetics Primer sheet mask, it’s got some surprisingly great ingredients and only costs $2!

Laura Scott Of A Little Bit Of Lacquer

“You don’t need to be there every minute of your kids’ life for them to know they’re loved.”
Read that sentence again. And again. Okay, just one more time.
When I read that on Laura Scott’s blog post about being a working mom, it instantly resonated with me—hey, I’m a working mom! My daughter has attended daycare, is currently in a before- and after-school care program, and my family babysits her all the time—all of which allow me to juggle my career, a social life, and self-care. Even though I know time apart is important, the mom guilt constantly creeps in. But reading Laura’s posts on the importance of finding a village (and using that village!) was so important for me; it never hurts to be reminded that my daughter is loved and well cared for, even if I’m not there every hour of her life.
So that’s why I’m happy this week’s Healthy Her Way feature is Laura Scott of A Little Bit of Lacquer. Because of posts like that (and so many others), it’s clear that Laura is a mom who gets it. Plenty of moms on the internet are at the harsh end of pointed fingers for not doing enough for their kids, for not being there enough, for having other priorities too. Laura, on the other hand, is open about the fact that she does do a lot besides parent her three daughters. Of course, she’s more than just a mom (aren’t we all?)—she’s a graduate of Harvard Medical School, a dermatology resident specializing in skin of color, a wife, and a blogger. To say that she’s got a lot to juggle is an understatement.
Laura started her blog in her second year of med school to hold herself accountable for the interests she had outside of medicine (and constant second-year studying). Today, it helps pay the bills that come with being a med school graduate and mom of three. She regularly posts about being a working mom, her interests both professional and personal, and how she and her husband, Nathan—who’s also a Harvard Med grad because of coursemake it work.
Reading Laura’s blog and scrolling her ‘gram, you get the sense that she won’t lead you astray with her recommendations. You won’t find any Flat Tummy Tea or appetite-suppressing lollipops here. Instead, she works with brands that actually meet her needs and those of her followers. She shares details about her working mom style and how to look put together when you’re feeling anything but (polished nails, well-fitting clothes, and good shoes are her top three tips). And, ever the doctor, she regularly posts skincare tips, dermatology issues to watch out for, and advice that will help us all stay safe in the sun.
If I haven’t convinced you to follow her religiously until the end of time, check out her responses below: She’s totally badass. She’s #blackgirlmagic embodied. She’s definitely one of my favorite finds, and I’m really excited to feature her this week.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

Wake up between 5 and 5:30, take care of emails and maybe some studying, get ready from 6 to 6:30, then wake up the girls and get them dressed and fed. We’re out of the house by 7:20, drop them off at daycare, then head to work to be in by 8. In clinic it depends on the day, but I can be seeing general adult dermatology, pediatric dermatology, or be doing skin cancer surgeries and reconstructions.
I love the variety of things we do every day! Most days I’m done by 5:30 or 6, pick up the girls, and relax. I either cook something easy or order takeout, my husband usually gets home shortly after, and we play with the girls and just catch up on our days. The girls are in bed by 9, then we usually stay up until 11 or so working on various projects, catching up on Netflix, and spending time together!

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

Self-care is such a hot topic right now and I feel like everyone thinks it should mean some fancy green juice and hot yoga—but neither of those are my kind of thing! Self-care is whatever fills your cup! So for me it’s getting down on the ground and playing with my kids, indulging in a good movie and delicious takeout, and getting to spend quality alone time with my husband.

How do you stay inspired?

I’m incredibly lucky in that so much of my inspiration literally gets sent to me daily. Every day I get messages from young women all over the world who share how my life has impacted them. So many of them started school again after having a child, or decided to push through and apply for a new program, or just keep working hard knowing that what they want in life is attainable. It’s those messages that really push me and remind me not only of how blessed I am but how important it is that I keep going!

I am obsessed with Dove Beauty Bars—old news for any dermatologist since we always recommend their sensitive skin bar to most of our patients, but I’ve recently discovered their scented bars and the Go Fresh Revive beauty bar is my current obsession!

What are your favorite apps?

On the fun side, I’d say the app Snug—it lets you plan your IG feed to see how your pictures will fit and play around with the look. It definitely helps in planning a cohesive gallery! On the work side, I’d say Evernote. I use it for all my notes and ideas and screenshots and even saving receipts, and the best part is it’s searchable!

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

Oh my goodness it’s impossible to pick one! I love the IG community and surround myself with inspiring accounts! I think my two favorites right now are @travelnoire for constantly inspiring me to travel and empowering women of color to do so, and @thehomeedit. Literally every single one of their pictures makes me want to organize my house—another form of self-care for me: cleaning!

Certified Health Coach Nikki Sharp

Nikki Sharp is an internationally known wellness blogger and health coach. More than 350,000 people follow her on Instagram to see her recipe videos, life updates, and inspiration posts. She is the quintessential representation of health and fitness: toned, blonde, and beautiful.
But even she—the ideal picture of wellness—has struggled with some dark demons: body dysmorphia, anorexia, binge eating disorder, depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
In recent years, though, she’s managed to cope with and even overcome her problems. In an incredibly raw post on her blog about her experiences with recovering from disordered eating, she writes, “I focused on health, balanced meals with no restrictions, eating lots of colors, added meditation, and journaling. I started seeing exercise as a reward, not punishment. This … transformed my life and my health: it literally made me survive.”
Nikki’s health journey has taken her across the globe, but years of modeling led to loneliness and unhealthy relationships with food and her body. From Colorado to Shanghai to Sydney to London (and more!), she discovered that a) was she was tired of damaging diets and b) she actually loves eating clean. In 2012, Nikki started her blog to document the process of learning to cook nutritious meals, getting certified to be a health coach, and building a better relationship with her body.
Since then, Nikki has been dedicated to showing her followers how they, too, can overcome their issues with health, nutrition, and wellness. With her health certifications (and years of professional and personal experience to back them up), she’s written countless blog posts full of recipes and life advice, nine e-books, and two full-length books.
Her first book, The 5-Day Real Food Detox, has nearly 100 five-star reviews on Amazon. Though detoxes are typically a fad (and a misguided one, at best!), her version of the trend is completely different: It encourages you to eat! The focus is on “detoxing” from foods that don’t fuel your body and instead making healthful choices that help you get your glow on from within.
Nikki released her second book, Meal Prep Your Way to Weight Loss, this month (which is why she’s the perfect choice for this week’s feature!); it promises to show readers how to finally stop dieting and change their lifestyles for good. Plenty of people have recommended meal prepping to stay on track, but this book will show readers how to really do it by learning the best techniques, delicious recipes, and offering a 28-day guide to make sure your new habit sticks.
From her years as a model subsisting on the bare minimum to becoming a renowned health coach with a sunny, approachable attitude to boot, Nikki’s journey is definitely an inspiration. We can’t wait to see what she does next.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

I tend to wake up at 7 a.m. every morning, then depending on my schedule I will work out in the morning—I like doing it when I wake up because it gives me less reason to make excuses later in the day—have breakfast, and do emails/check social. Each day is so different, and sometimes I’m doing interviews all day, others I’m having meetings, and there are times I head to my office to buckle down and work.
My routine nearly looks the same in that I have a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner and try to make time to exercise four to five times per week. I’ve also been doing more meditation lately and will make it a priority to go to a 45-minute class in my day, which has had tremendous effects on my stress levels. I aim to be in bed by 10:30 and turn my phone off around 10 p.m. and put it in a different room.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

Meditation—even if it’s only 5 minutes, exercising—this is my therapy—putting my phone away at night, and making time to call or text my friends every single day to check in and say hi. Eating well is obviously a huge way I practice self-care because I like to feel energized every day.

How do you stay inspired?

By focusing on how I am helping others achieve better health and happiness. Whenever I get stressed I find that it’s because I am focusing too much on myself or allowing fears to come up, so immediately I will shift back to “How can I serve others?” and this always helps me to become re-inspired!

How To Create A Morning Routine You'll Actually Stick To

From countless articles on how #bossbabe CEOs spend the early hours of their days to entire YouTube videos on how bloggers bounce out of bed, morning routines (and finding out the details of other people’s routines) are definitely a Thing.
And they have been for a while. Take Princess Margaret, for example. When it came to morning routines (and a lot else in life), she had the right idea. Unlike the power routines you’ll see from people on Forbes’ front page, though, she didn’t actually do much until about noon.

No wonder articles (yes, like this one) about morning routines are still popular; Her Royal Highness’ morning breakdown is more than 60 years old and people are still reading it. Finding out minute-by-minute details of how others make their mornings work makes sense, though: Not only are we all inherently creepy (blame social media), the routines of influencers everywhere always seem to involve a whole lot of lemon water and soothing yoga flows—pretty idealistic.
How your mornings go, on the other hand, might be a little frantic in comparison. But let’s say you want to get from here (rolling out of bed bleary eyed and getting ready in a daze) to there (singing like a Disney princess to baby birds while sipping coffee): How do you do it?
With a morning routine.
By the way, morning routines aren’t just for show. The National Alliance on Mental Illness has explained their benefits, proving that there is some scientific backing to starting your days off right. A routine can increase productivity, energy, and inspiration. And a routine makes you hold yourself accountable: You decide how you’re going to spend those first minutes out of bed.
HealthyWay
And to make it work, you just do it—right? Well, sometimes! If you’ve read countless features detailing every minute of your social media girl crush’s morning but still can’t make it happen for yourself, that might be because you’re just recreating someone else’s day instead of developing a routine that actually addresses what you need.
Here’s how to sort through your routine so you can crush your mornings.

First Things First: Find your why.

Why are you so interested in a morning routine in the first place? Is it because you see them all over social media and you’d like your mornings to be equally as beautiful? Is it because you’ve read about the routines of super successful people and you, too, would like to be a super successful person? Is it because being a morning person seems like something you probably should be at this age? Is it because you have a lot of shit to get done and before work is the only time to do it? Is it because you’re constantly rushing around and end up being late to work three times a week? What is it that you want to change about mornings? What is it that you want to change about your life?
Why do you want a morning routine, sis?
Think about this question for a minute, then come back. I’ll wait.
HealthyWay
Note that all of the motivations I listed are completely valid. No matter the reason for wanting to have a morning routine, it’s just important that you have one.
Having a why will be what you think about on those mornings when staying in bed for just 10, 15, or 20 more minutes feels incredibly appealing.

Figure out what’s already working.

Believe it or not, you already have a morning routine, even if you didn’t plan it out that way. Think about everything you do each morning: get out of bed, brush your teeth, get dressed. The list goes on. That’s a routine. Now think about which of those things you have to do. Those need to stay in the routine.
Besides the basics, is there another thing that you do every morning? Do you enjoy doing that thing? Then keep doing that thing. Just because a thing was not in Princess Margaret’s routine (and not much was) does not mean it can’t be in yours.
On the other hand, let’s say you do not like that thing. Unless it’s truly necessary, ditch it.
At this point in your life, you probably know what you don’t want. (What you do want is a question most people can never fully answer and is a topic for another article.) If you don’t want to get up at 5 a.m. to go to the gym, don’t do it just because the founder of your favorite skincare company does. If you hate coffee, don’t drink it just because you think you need a caffeine jolt.
This is your morning after all—design it for you.

Set your goals.

You’ve got your why, and you’ve got your list of things you need and want to do—and the things you want to cast off. Next up in creating a morning routine that really works for you is to set goals. Everyone’s mornings look different because everyone’s priorities are different.
For instance, do you want…
… To focus on nutrition? Get your day going by jump-starting your metabolism: Drink a full glass of water as soon as you wake up. And don’t skip breakfast!
Make it impossible to forget about your newfound water habit by keeping a carafe and glass set on your nightstand. After breakfast, it’s time to caffeinate: Save some money and take your coffee on the go—ban.do’s travel mugs never fail to put a smile on my face.

… To get moving? Throw down a yoga mat and start flowing. Go for a quick run (pre-shower, please). Try some HIIT workouts to get your heart rate up.
… To reflect? Journaling has proven benefits; whether you’re into the bullet journal craze or you want to focus on gratitude, post-dreamland contemplation can bring out the realest thoughts. Start your morning off slow with some meditation—when the rest of the world is rushing around getting ready, taking even five minutes to be in your own mind can set the tone for the rest of the day.
We know you’re busy, but take some time to write down your dreams, sleepy ideas, and a few things you’re grateful for in your favorite notebook: something cheeky like this one from ban.do or a customized notebook from Pop & Suki are hard to ignore! Inner reflection more your speed? Plop down on a pouf and open up Headspace.

… To be more productive? That might mean building in time for brainstorming for a big meeting or responding to emails. You can also multitask: Join a webinar while you do your makeup to stay up-to-date with industry happenings.
To stay informed? Podcasts are a busy girl’s best friend. Depending on how much time you have, I recommend NPR’s Up First (10 minutes), The New York Times’ The Daily (20 minutes), and Crooked Media’s Pod Save America (60-90 minutes). Or go old school and actually pick up a paper. (Print media is dying; it’s up to us to save it!)
… To have flawless skin? Girl, I hear you. Build in time for a skincare routine that beauty bloggers ’round the world would envy. A sheet mask is a quick way to indulge yourself—and start your day off hydrated as hell. Don’t forget the SPF!
My morning skincare routine isn’t complete without my Foreo Luna mini 2—the gentle scrubby action combined with my ultimate fave cleanser, Pacifica’s Sea Foam Complete Face Wash, is a refreshing way to start my day. As for SPF, I always turn to sunscreen queens Supergoop! and Coola. Supergoop!’s SPF 40 Unseen Sunscreen before my makeup and Coola’s SPF 30 Makeup Setting Spray after keeps me protected and hydrated.

Make it happen.

Deciding how you’re going to spend your mornings and actually putting those things into practice are two very different things. Here are our top tips for making your morning routine work.
Start small. Rome was not built in a day, and neither were the best morning routines. You can’t expect to go from a typical morning to something that would hit the Instagram Discover tab in just one day. Pick one or two new steps to incorporate into your morning routine and master those first.
Multitask where possible. Even the most dedicated morning people can struggle to accomplish everything in the time between waking up and making it into the office. That’s why it’s key to multitask: If you’re committed to hearing about the news every day, listen to a podcast in the shower. If you don’t have time to sit down to breakfast, grab something you can eat in the car. Make it work for you and the amount of time you realistically have.
HealthyWay
Start the night before. Preparation is key! Lay out your clothes the night before, meal prep your lunches, and take off your makeup. When you start thinking of your morning routine before you’re even in bed, you’re that much more likely to be successful.
Be gentle with yourself. You’re going to have mornings when you sleep in or mornings when you feel like crap or mornings when you just don’t want to do your routine. That’s okay. The whole point of building a morning routine is that it works for you as an individual, and if that means skipping it sometimes, you’re not a failure. You’re just a person.

My Morning Routine by the Minute

6:45 Rise and shine! I drink a glass of water in bed and check emails or any pressing social media notifications—a lot of people say not to check your phone as soon as you wake up, but I like to catch up right away.
6:55 Out of bed and into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. While it’s brewing, I pick out a quick meditation on the Headspace app.
7:00-7:10 Meditate. Though it’s only five minutes, this is my quiet time—no lights on in the house is key.
7:10-7:15 Quickest shower ever. I wash my hair and shave my legs at night, but I need a morning refresh to wake me up. This is when I put on a punchy playlist for a jolt of energy.
7:15-7:35 My morning skincare routine and makeup. I typically switch to a podcast at this point—usually Who? Weekly or the newest Crooked Media pod.
7:30 Wake up my 6-year-old daughter. This often takes a few minutes and always ends with a “good morning” song! Thankfully, she can pick out her own clothes, brush her teeth, and generally get everything she needs for school ready on her own.
7:40 Get dressed! This is generally pretty easy for me because HealthyWay HQ is v casual so I can really wear whatever I want.
7:50 Make sure my daughter is ready to go and gather any last-minute things.

8:00 Out the door and on the road.

The Nighttime Skin Routine You'll Never Want To Skip Again

We’ve all heard that we need to take our makeup off and wash our face before bed every night. I’m not here to debunk that: It’s definitely true. But some nights, devoting time to a skincare routine is a lot easier than others.
Some weeknights, I do a multi-step skincare routine involving a face mask (or two), accompanied by a glass of a big, bold California Cab and the latest episode of whatever Bravo reality show I’m binging that week. And some weekend nights, I get in my front door from an Uber after one cocktail too many and take the shortest pass possible at my face with micellar water, dab on some moisturizer, and fall into bed.
HealthyWay
See, having a routine that you’ll still do when you’re busy, exhausted, or yes, even a little tipsy, is the important part. If you think you have to do essences, serums, oils, and creams every single night, you might be setting yourself up to fail.
Pare back to the basics, though, and you have more freedom to add in more products when you actually have the time (or desire).

Can’t I just wash my face in the morning?

You should wash your face in the morning! But I like a fairly minimal morning routine (so I can sleep longer) and prefer to do the heavy lifting at night.
Besides sleeping in a bit longer, a nighttime skincare routine is important for two more major reasons: 1) you really should get the dirt of the day off your face, and 2) cellular regeneration happens at night.
Cellular regeneration means your cells are repairing themselves, giving you a youthful glow. Our cells work overtime at night to repair themselves, dividing at less than half the time than when we’re awake. By sticking to a skincare routine, you’re taking advantage of the cellular regeneration process and helping it along.
Sure, your body is likely functioning as it should—boosting collagen production and destroying free radicals—but going to bed with a sleeping pack on is giving your skin a leg up. Treat it well, and you’ll definitely see results.

Start simple.

At its most basic, a solid nighttime skincare routine should involve removing makeup, cleansing your face, and moisturizing. Anything else you add on is gravy—but that gravy is usually worth it.
Use a makeup remover to do the heavy lifting of taking your makeup off. Using a dedicated remover instead of letting your cleanser do that work allows your cleansing product to focus on its job: removing dirt and impurities from your skin.

My Picks for Makeup Removers…

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm is my go-to; the consistency easily melts away my makeup, but it doesn’t feel heavy after cleansing.
If you’re a makeup-remover traditionalist (is there such a thing?), you can never go wrong with Lancôme’s Bi-Facil Double-Action remover. Just don’t forget to shake it well!
On the go? Skip the makeup wipes and get a makeup remover cloth, like the OG MakeUp Eraser cloth. It’s not my favorite pick for waterproof liner and mascara, but on light makeup days or when I’m traveling, having a product I know won’t spill is a godsend.

My Picks for Cleansers…

I can be pretty bougie when it comes to skincare, but I cannot deny the allure of Pacifica, a vegan, cruelty-free company. Their Sea Foam Face Wash is sulfate- and paraben-free, doesn’t dry out my skin, has a fragrance just light enough to smell (but that won’t hang around), and it’s under $5. Yes, girl.
And on the other end of the financial spectrum, I have to give it up for Tata Harper’s Purifying Cleanser. While I’m always conscious about stripping my skin’s natural oils, this cleanser is great for purging the nasties from every skin type.

Add in a moisturizer after you cleanse, even if you have oily skin or tend to be acne-prone. Your skin is doing a lot of work at night, and it needs that extra love.

My Picks for Moisturizers…

At this point in my skincare journey, I’m pretty much a Drunk Elephant evangelist, and nothing makes my heart sing like the combo of their Protini Polypeptide Cream followed up with the Lala Retro Whipped Cream. If your skin is extra dry like mine, that combo will do you right. If you’re on the oilier side (or want a lighter feel during the day), you may just want to stick with the Protini.
I understand if the word “cream” makes your pores want to run for the hills, so until you’re more comfortable jumping into the ultra-moisturizing waters, you can go for something a little lighter. Murad’s Essential-C Night Moisture is a thinner consistency and its vitamins A, C, and E will increase that nighttime cell turnover.

If you’re going the minimalist route, that’s really all you need. But on those days your skin is needing a little more TLC, you can always add in extra products to the routine.
If you want to add in just one more step… Go with a toner right after you cleanse. Toners of years past were often harsh, astringent, and drying. These days, they’re just setting the scene for your moisturizer and offer a much-needed post-cleansing pH balance or a little extra hydration.
I’ll never stop singing the praises of Son & Park’s Beauty Water—a multitasker if I’ve ever seen one, it is the definition of refreshing. For something more clarifying (and cheaper), try Thayers Witch Hazel toners.
If you feel a breakout coming on… Add in a spot treatment. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Put it on before your moisturizer so it can penetrate your skin’s surface and stop that spot in its tracks.
Mario Bedescu’s Drying Lotion is one of the OG spot treatments. It doesn’t smell great, I’ll give you that—thanks calamine, sulfur, and camphor! But it works for me. Less a spot treatment than a miracle worker, COSRX’s Acne Pimple Master Patches can stop a spot in its tracks—and for less than $5 for 24, it’s a damn good deal.

If you’re feeling extra dry… Try a serum or an essence. A serum is a powerhouse product made for a specific purpose, while an essence is like a lighter version, with a more watery consistency. Both are great pre-moisturizer to inject some moisture into the skin.
Essences aren’t cheap, but this Belif Hungarian Water Essence is on the more affordable side, and I can definitely feel a difference when I use it. Feeling fancy? SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence is a beloved essence—just one sample has me still saving up for a full-size bottle.
Serums are powerful little friends. Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum uses AHAs and BHAs to resurface the skin while you sleep. If you’d rather focus on vitamin C (oh so trendy), Sunday Riley’s C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum has been working for me, but Ole Henriksen’s vitamin C–packed Truth Serum is another winner.

If you need to relax… Always Be Masking! From clay masks to charcoal masks to sheet masks, masking options are endless and can tackle just about any issue in 20 minutes or less. Depending on your skin needs that day (and how much time you have), put on a mask and go lie on the couch. You deserve this.
I can’t live without my monthly FaceTory subscription, which sends me five new Korean sheet masks per month. I get to try new masks I would likely have never heard of otherwise, and I highly recommend it for sheet maskers everywhere. Other masks I use and love include Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial, Laniege’s Water Sleeping Mask, Origin’s Clear Improvement charcoal mask, and Shea Moisture’s Peace Rose Oil Complex mud mask.

Tying It All Together

A skincare routine you do every single night can offer great benefits: relaxation, the skin you’ve always dreamed of, and the feeling of accomplishment one gets from properly completing a Korean skincare routine (10 steps is no joke!).
But skincare won’t solve all your issues, no matter how hard we, the beauty junkies of the world, try. The solution? Build your skincare into a larger self-care regimen. That can look different for everyone, but consider the other ways you like to care for yourself and try to multitask.
Need some ideas?
Drink more water, and eat your fruits and veggies. They’re old tips, but they’re ones that really work. The more hydrated you’re keeping your body, the happier it and your skin will be. Give those skin products you’re investing in a leg up with a body you’re taking care of from the inside out.
Use your routine time to listen to a podcast or FaceTime a friend (as long as she doesn’t mind watching you exfoliate). Light a candle and meditate while your sheet mask is on—there’s not much else you can do with that time but sit still anyway. Watch a movie, read a book, or create some art while your charcoal mask hardens. Slip into the bath while you do an at-home chemical peel.
And finally, when the routine is over, get some sleep. It’s an often-overlooked form of self-care, and your cells will definitely thank you.

The Apps That Help Me With My Mental Health

At least once a week, I wonder what I did with all my time before I had an iPhone. I like having my little supercomputer in my pocket, with all the world’s information (and my friends’ selfies) at my fingertips, but I’m old enough to remember the years before my family got our first desktop computer too. It was a childhood unplugged—full of running around outside, playing make-believe, and reading all afternoon long. But the ’90s are long over and it’s 2018, baby; if you aren’t connected, people are going to look at you like you’ve got three heads.
Unfortunately, there have been plenty of studies that show a negative link between the use of technology and mental health issues. As wonderful as technology is for modern medicine and maintaining far-flung friendships, some researchers have associated heavy social media usage with mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety, and with poor self-esteem, attention-seeking behaviors, and difficulty regulating emotions—not what we’d call great news.
On the other hand, I was fortunate enough (ha) to experience depression, anxiety, and body image issues years before Snapchat was a gleam in Evan Spiegel’s eye. Lucky me! So while I completely understand the researchers’ point, for me, correlation doesn’t equal causation.
In fact, I’ve found a way to make technology work for me and my mental health. Through careful curation of my social feeds and researching apps that support my well-being, I’ve found a few tools that actually help me when my mental health is suffering—and I love that I can keep them all right in my pocket.
These are the apps that I use when I need a little pick-me-up (or calm-me-down).

Headspace

The OG meditation app is a tried-and-true classic for many, which is why almost everyone has heard of it. Though I’ve practiced yoga (off and on) since I was 15, I never got fully into the whole meditation thing—that is, until my anxiety hit a major level a few years ago and I could not figure out what would calm me down when not my Lexapro was not doing its job. Enter on-the-go meditation: With a pair of earbuds, a charged phone, and Headspace, I’ve been able to meditate everywhere from the middle of HealthyWay HQ to my daughter’s soccer practice.
Download Headspace for iOS and Android.

Oak

I’ve learned a lot of coping mechanisms for my anxiety over the years and those, in combination with my SSRI coursing through my veins, have made a huge difference in how I live my life. The best technique I’ve learned when I’m really feeling it is mindful breathwork. However, if you’ve ever had major anxiety waiting for a concert to start because you notice the room seems too small for all of us and what if we run out of oxygen and we never see our families again?—well, sometimes reminding yourself to breathe isn’t at the top of your priority list.
This is where Oak comes in handy. There are meditations available on the app, but my favorite part is the Breathe feature, which will lead you through one of three breathing exercises, complete with visualizations for you to focus on as you calm your wild mind.

Download Oak for iOS.

A Soft Murmur

On occasion, I experience anxiety that manifests itself as insomnia—no matter how tired I am, I just can’t sleep. While I do have a sleep playlist always ready to go on Spotify, not even the sweet sounds of Ludovico Einaudi’s piano is enough to lull me off to dreamland.
That’s when I need to bring in the big guns: A Soft Murmur. This background noise app lets you create your own mix of ambient and white noise sounds. (My favorite mix is of ocean waves, rain, and thunder.) While it’s a more passive form of relaxation, my mental health definitely suffers if I don’t get enough sleep at night, so this is a must-have on my phone.
Download A Soft Murmur for iOS and Android.

Recovery Record

Like most teenage girls, I had body image issues. For me, those body image issues came out in the form of disordered eating behaviors, like restricting and purging. While I’ve managed to get those behaviors under control in the years since college, it’s still hard for me to focus on any sort of “diet” without triggering an unhealthy mindset. Counting calories, for instance, is out of the question for me, as it’s far too easy to fall back into patterns I’d rather avoid. That said, when I want to analyze what I’m eating to make sure I’m making good nutrition choices, it’s nice to have an app that won’t encourage me to eat less or compete with others.
Recovery Record helps you log your meals and snacks and helps you track your emotions before and after you eat, so you can stay on track and understand your eating patterns—in a healthy way.

Download Recovery Record for iOS and Android.

Instagram

You might wonder what the hell I’m talking about, putting Instagram on this list, but hear me out. It’s true that if you’re following hundreds of models who love FaceTune a little too much, bloggers who are constantly posting #spon content, and your frenemies from high school, your Instagram experience probably isn’t all that fun. It can breed feelings of competition and jealousy and can compel you to engage in performative behaviors you don’t even enjoy. But the beauty of Instagram (like most social platforms) is that you can curate your feed—which is exactly what I’ve done.
When I’m having a crappy day, I always head straight for Instagram. There, I know I will see photos of baby elephants (because I follow at least four accounts dedicated to pachyderms). I’ll find beautiful pictures of people and places around the world (because I’ve followed local photographers from cities big and small) and art that makes me think (artists on Instagram are peak #inspiration). I’ll be able to watch videos of babies giggling and babbling away (because I’m a total creep and follow chill moms who are doing their best). Best of all, I can see snaps from my sweet friends, sharing the things they care about. If you’re feeling icky about Instagram, follow my lead and unfollow everyone—then build your feed back up to accounts that bring a smile to your face every time.

Citizen’s Mark: A Startup That’s Crowdfunding Sustainable Workwear To Take On Fast Fashion

We get why people like fast fashion: It’s trendy, it’s accessible, and it’s cheap. But as more stories come out about working conditions in factories and the impact that these mega-retailers are having on Mother Earth, buying fast fashion is starting to feel a bit indefensible. How can we claim to be interested in social justice and environmental consciousness but still contribute to the insane carbon footprint the fashion industry has?
Enter socially responsible clothing. More and more people are considering their social views when they head to market, allowing ethical fashion brands their place in the spotlight, and it seems that the movement is here to stay.
One of these brands is Citizen’s Mark, a fashion startup founded by former UN policy official Cynthia Salim. Salim started the company when she realized that while men have no shortage of professional workwear options, the same cannot be said for women’s wear. After speaking to women, all of whom were searching for a high-quality, go-to piece for their wardrobes, Salim got to work creating Citizen’s Mark much-talked-about blazer. Citizen’s Mark has been committed to responsible quality since day one: the blazers—available on their website—are made by hand in a solar-powered Portuguese factory that pays its workers living wages. Salim also hand-sourced every element of the jackets: From the wool, which is made in a mill that prioritizes water conservation, to the biodegradable cotton seed lining to the buttons made by hand in Nepal, she made sure that each material choice reflected Citizen’s Mark’s values of responsibility, sustainability, and transparency.
Not content to stop there, Salim’s onto her next project, which she’s taken to Kickstarter for grass roots funding. The Better Than Silk blouse is a machine-washable (!) blouse made from lyocell, an extremely eco-friendly fabric. Salim says, “We spent a year with our industry-leading weaving partner in Switzerland tweaking multiple technical weaving factors to make [the lyocell] drape like silk.” There are long-sleeved and sleeveless versions available, making this workwear staple a year-round necessity.
We spoke to Salim about the Better Than Silk collection, how Citizen’s Mark is responding to the fast fashion industry, and why she’s using Kickstarter to bring ethical fashion to the masses.
HealthyWay
HealthyWay: Can you tell us more about the materials you’re using for the Better Than Silk shirt?
Salim: Better Than Silk is made of 100 percent lyocell, which is sustainably forested tree fiber from Austria. It’s actually an eco-fashion staple, but it’s always made into t-shirts and blankets, never anything as luxurious as silk—until now.
I spent a year convincing suppliers that it can and should be done, and that’s how we ended up with Better Than Silk. It’s a miracle eco-fiber that finally looks luxurious enough to wear to work. Lyocell is biodegradable, made in a closed-loop production process, and breathable and moisture wicking (unlike silk, which traps heat).
You’re so involved in every step of your production process. Can you tell us the details of how this shirt is being made, and why you made the choices you did?
We started with lyocell because it’s hands down one of the most sustainable materials in the industry. Plus, it’s incredibly soft, breathable, and comfortable. The trick was giving this eco-fiber a luxury makeover. Once we picked this raw material, I had to convince weavers (the next step in the process) to spend the time with me to make it look like silk. I had to explain that working women pretty much have to choose between silk (which is dry-clean intensive) or polyester (which never biodegrades).
We adjusted yarn type, weight, density, finishing—about a dozen technical decisions—and did several trial weaves before we got to the final result. Then we headed to our factory in Portugal to get it set up for production in a living wage factory.
HealthyWay
I think it’s so exciting for people interested in the process of fashion design to have a chance to be involved in a launch campaign. What made you decide to use Kickstarter to fund production?
Launching on Kickstarter means we get to answer to our customers and community instead of speed and margins-driven investors. In a message to our community, I wrote: “We’ve never been a margins-driven, venture-backed engine for wealth creation. We’re a values-driven, community-backed engine for change. And we’d like to keep it that way. That’s why, after one year of developing Better Than Silk, we’re asking you to join us in making this a reality by backing our Kickstarter campaign.”
What was your original vision for Citizen’s Mark? How has it grown beyond that initial idea?
I was so surprised by how Citizen’s Mark evolved! I thought people would like the product but hesitate because we’re a new brand. It turned out to be the opposite. People really identified with the brand and values, but many were looking for something at a lower price point than our super boardroom-ready Italian wool blazer. That’s one of the reasons we created Better Than Silk, a really versatile product that our growing community wanted.
Fashion has always been an important tool for women who want to send a message. What message do you want Citizen’s Mark to send, and how do you keep that in mind as you’re designing?
We design to project credibility, and I think that’s a really interesting design philosophy. When you think of brand identities, you can think of a lot of brands that embody hip, cool, sexy, edgy, and these other human dimensions really well, but people rarely design for women to look credible.
That’s what I think about when I look at a design: Would I think this woman is credible?
Can you share your thoughts on the evolution of the fast fashion market and where ethically produced items fit into that production cycle?
I think we’re moving in the direction of timeless classics from a trend perspective, which will really help us move away from fast fashion. Fast fashion is about planned obsolescence, where brands plan for something to become obsolete or out of date to make you buy another one. We operate in a completely opposite way, where we want to make one thing that you never have to re-buy.
Of course, that feeds into price because of the quality measures that go into it, but I think we’re all slowly moving towards more sustainable apparel purchases.
HealthyWay
Pricing and availability are just two barriers to entry for people who are interested in moving beyond fast fashion. How do you see Citizen’s Mark breaking down those walls for women?
This is a huge, huge issue we’re working to tackle. There’s a minimum price that we do need to pay to ensure people get fair wages throughout the supply chain. But beyond that, we’re also a premium brand, so our prices don’t just reflect the sustainable choices we make, but also the fact that we picked really nice sustainable things. But I completely understand that price is a valid issue.
That’s also why we’re launching on Kickstarter and planning to continue to offer pre-order options—it gives consumers a chance to get 40 percent off in exchange for waiting a little bit for a timeless product anyway, it reduces inventory waste, and it allows you to be our banker, so we can answer to you in terms of values and mission alignment.
How can women make socially responsible shopping choices while still keeping their budgets in mind?
Of course some things are just beyond our budgets, but when I make a big quality purchase or social responsibility purchase, I think about what price multiple makes sense for me. For example, if I buy a coat that I know I’ll wear three times more than my regular cheap coat, or last three times longer, then three times the price of my regular coat is my budget limit.
HealthyWay
What does the name Citizen’s Mark mean to you?
I think of all of us as citizens before consumers. That’s why the name Citizen’s Mark, and the idea of citizens making their mark through their everyday actions, is meaningful to us.
Can you tell us more about the Premium Essentials collection?
Better Than Silk is the beginning of our Premium Essentials collection, a collection of wardrobe MVPs that will last an entire phase of your career and reflect our values as socially conscious and empowered women on the rise.
What are some of your favorite ethical clothing brands (besides Citizen’s Mark of course!)?
I’m a big Stella McCartney fan and love Patagonia.
Let’s say someone wants to talk about your products with her friend: What’s your “elevator pitch” for Citizen’s Mark and the Better Than Silk shirt?
“It’s like your favorite silk blouse, but machine-washable. Can you even believe we still have to dry-clean our silk tops?!”
To pre-order a Better Than Silk shirt for 40 percent off planned retail price, support Citizen’s Mark’s Kickstarter campaign.

Editor's Picks: Spring-Inspired Pieces To Freshen Up Your Home

[noads]
Hey friends!
Spring has sprung—finally! It’s the season of rebirth and brings a fresh, fun newness that I desperately need after a long, Midwest winter. And while I’m excited to finally spend time outside, I’m still a homebody at heart and I like to make sure my space is decked out for lazy weeknights in, lounging in my backyard, and dinner parties with friends.
I’ve put together a list of what I’m looking at to help get my home into the swing of spring; you’ll be happy to know most of my picks are sustainable! Throw open those windows, bring in the fresh air and sunlight, and dig in for options that’ll spruce up your whole house.
HealthyWaySenior Lifestyle Editor[/noads]

Living Room

One of my favorite ways to give my living room a seasonal facelift is with new throw pillows. (Can you ever have too many?) This season I’m especially feeling lush fabrics, touchable textures, and rich colors. Target’s newest home line, Opal House, checks all three boxes for me with this pleated velvet oversized lumbar pillow; the citron color will go especially well with my navy Chesterfield couch and is sure to be a sunny spot on a cloudy spring day.
Now let’s make like Lil Jon and head to the window, to the wall. I’m a true believer in the power of fresh air, so until the humidity of Midwest summers takes over, I keep my windows open day and night. To give my house the laid-back feeling I’m looking for this spring, I’m hanging white linen sheers on my windows. I’m excited about these linen curtains; they’re handmade in Lithuania from 100 percent organic linen, so it’s a pretty purchase you can feel good about.
If your walls are feeling a little stale, hanging new art is an easy fix. You can print out your favorite snaps from the past year and hang them in the float frame from internet fave Artifact Uprising, or go budget friendly with something from IKEA—a few of the Virserum frames are perfect for curating a gallery wall.
If you’re looking for something a little more elevated, I always recommend Society6. Everything on the site is made by independent artists and it’s great to support the little guy. I’ve got my eye on rich photography, simple line work, and abstract landscapes.

Kitchen + Dining

I love having friends over when the weather gets nicer. Whether we’re sitting inside around my vintage mid-century dining table or eating out on the patio, spring dinners with my favorite people are one of the best parts of the year. Before our first get together, I’ll pick up some new tableware and glasses to get in the mood for food (as if I’m not already).
These pretty blue petite Moroccan glasses from The Little Market look perfect for warm-weather cocktails—and each purchase supports artists in Morocco.
For those al fresco nights, I’m excited to bust out these bamboo plates from Xenia Taler. They’re shatterproof, super trendy, and biodegradable. I love the bright stripes on the Marseille and Amalfi collections—at under $50 for four plates, I’m buying both sets.

Bedroom

I’m staying on the linen train with new sheets—there’s no easier way to make a change to your bedroom that looks pretty and feels indulgent. This year I’m looking at Parachute’s linen sheet set, made out of 100 percent European flax. The blush color is still on trend but is muted enough to not be overwhelming.
Even the smallest spaces need upgrades; for me, that’s my makeup corner. I don’t have a dedicated dressing room (one day!) but I do have a small space for my makeup table and accessories. If you don’t have a spot like this, create one! But don’t just pick a corner and call it a day; spruce up the space with a few accessories.
No. 1 on that list is a mirror you really love. Though I always recommend getting a dedicated makeup mirror (that 10x magnification is ideal for eyebrow tweezing adventures), hanging one like the Reese mirror from World Market will help reflect light around the room and remind you that this space is all about you—just as it should be.

Become A Multitasking Maven With These 5 Versatile Beauty Products

I’m definitely a beauty junkie, which means you can name a product—from eyeliners to highlighters to my-lips-but-better lipsticks—and I surely have at least a few different options. But when I’m traveling, that goes out the window: I pare down my skin and makeup routines to the bare essentials so I can fit everything I need in a single carry-on. When I have to get smart about what I pack, I go simple with a few tried-and-true products that can do more than one thing. Hey, we multitask at work all the time—why not during our skincare routines too?
Whether you’re looking to save cash by killing two birds with one stone or you’re just trying to minimize your makeup bag for simplicity’s sake, it’s time to look at products known for their versatility. From multi-use to multitasking, here are five beauty products to make sure you have on hand.

1. Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil

This haircare brand from celeb stylist Jen Atkin is my favorite answer to the What the hell do I do with my hair? question. I have major waves and curls, and the best way I’ve found to tame the frizz is with Ouai’sRose Hair & Body Oil. Once I realized I could put it on my legs post-steamy shower, my life was changed.
The absinthium, shea, and rosehip oils moisturize and hydrate; the subtle rose scent is an added bonus! And since Ouai never tests on animals, this is a head-to-toe oil you can truly feel good about.

2. Milk Makeup Holographic Stick

We’ve all heard of the NARS Multiple, and it’s a classic for a reason. But if you’re looking for an animal-friendly, eco-conscious alternative, Milk Makeup’sHolographic Stick is the vegan answer to your prayers. The highlighter, which comes in three shades—Supernova, a holographic purple; Mars, a shimmery peach; and Stardust, a sweet pink—will work wonders on your entire face.
Lightly swipe Supernova across your lids and cheekbones for a poppin’ highlight or use Stardust to get matchy-matchy on your lips and apples of your cheeks. For a summery glow, use Mars over all three.

3. Glossier Balm Dotcom

It’s the cult-fave product from a cult-fave brand: Glossier’sBalm Dotcom is touted as a universal skin salve, and it certainly lives up to its reputation. Use it to repair [linkbuilder id=”6481″ text=”cracked lips”], chapped cheeks, and frayed cuticles. The waxy texture sits on your skin, ensuring moisture is locked in; use it over your favorite lip balm or hand lotion and you’ll be fixed up in no time.
The balm comes in six flavors—two of which give a sheer wash of color—and is addicting enough that you’ll want one in every purse you own.

4. Son & Park Beauty Water

Sephora only sells two products from Korean beauty brand Son & Park, which is a shame, because their Beauty Water is a must-have in my beauty arsenal. This multitasking master—which comes in the sleekest packaging ever—can be used as a cleanser, a toner, and an exfoliant gentle enough for everyday use. It creates a smooth base for applying foundation when used during the day, and at night it’s a relaxing way to take it all off.
It’s formulated with lavender and rose waters and orange and papaya extract, which will make your skin look brighter than ever—all thanks to a little water.

5. Korres Wild Rose Sleeping Facial

Unlike the other products highlighted, this isn’t a multi-use product, but it is a damn good multitasker. Korres’Wild Rose Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial is a powerful mask packed into a little jar that you use—as the name implies—while you’re sleeping. If you’re getting lax on your skincare routine or jet lag has you running a bit behind, try an overnight facial to restore some lost luminosity.
The cruelty-free and eco-friendly Greek beauty brand created this sleeping mask with wild rose oil, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid, which together deliver a serious dose of hydration and radiance you can see as soon as you wake up.
