How To Spot Autism In Your Infant

There is no doubt about it; the prevalence of autism in the United States has gotten the attention of many parents. Although there are still many unanswered questions about this developmental disorder, there are a few things we know for sure.
HealthyWay
First of all, we know that 1 out of every 68 children will fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. We also know that it is more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 in 42 boys is believed to have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), while 1 in 189 girls are believed to have this disorder, according to Autism Speaks.
Perhaps most important of all the things we know about autism is that early intervention matters.
HealthyWay
The sooner parents can spot symptoms in their children, the sooner they can seek specialized treatment for their children. Early intervention is known to be incredibly effective in improving the symptoms of autism, says Autism Speaks.
Of course, if parents want to seek early treatment, their child must be diagnosed first. For many moms and dads this will mean watching young children, even infants, for signs they may have autism.

About Early Diagnosis of Autism

Because of the nature of autism, it isn’t easy to spot in young children. This is because in some cases, children may appear to be developing typically only to regress—or lose some of their developmental skills—as they grow older.
HealthyWay
In the same fashion, some babies will actually struggle to meet their expected developmental milestones and then suddenly catch up to what is typical for their age.
Thus many doctors wait until children reach 24 months before they will make a definitive diagnosis of autism.
HealthyWay
This doesn’t mean that infants cannot be screened for developmental delays, however. According to Autism Speaks, some symptoms of autism can be detected as young as 6 months of age, and this advocacy organization encourages parents to be on the lookout for any troubling symptoms in their children.
Here are some tips on how to spot autism in your infant, starting when they are 3 months old.

The Earliest Signs of Autism in Your Baby

Diagnosis of autism by the time a child is 3 months of age is unheard of, but pediatricians are still keeping an eye out for potentially alarming delays in newborns that may point to an underlying issue.
HealthyWay
At 3 months of age, most typically developing children will have started to smile, according to the Autism Society. They will also begin to notice and look at faces, especially the faces of those they care about the most.
When presented with a moving object, 3-month-olds should be able to follow that object by moving their gaze or shifting their head.
HealthyWay
Some motor delays could also point to ASD in babies, such as being unable to lift their head or bring their hand to their mouth, according to the Autism Society.

Signs in the First Six Months of Life

By the time your baby is 6 months old, they should be able to engage in some basic social interactions with the people who are caring for them most frequently.
HealthyWay
Absence of these interactions is one of the chief signs of autism during the first six months of a baby’s life. If your child isn’t smiling at you or showing expressions of enjoyment by this age, this might be a clue that your baby may have some developmental delays, according to Helpguide.org.
There is also some evidence that very young babies who do not seem interested in the faces of others are at a higher risk for autism. One study, performed by researchers at Yale, observed the amount of time infants spent looking at images of faces.
HealthyWay
More than two years later, researchers followed up with this same group of infants and found that those who went on to be diagnosed with autism were more likely to belong to the group of infants who spent less time looking at faces.

Signs You Can Spot Before a Baby Is 9 Months Old

As your baby grows older, there are new milestones they should be reaching. Failure to reach these milestones can be cause for concern, even if it doesn’t guarantee a diagnosis of autism. In addition to smiling in response to being smiled at, there are other reciprocal behaviors you should expect to see in your child.
HealthyWay
At 9 months old, typically developing babies will engage in exchanging noises back and forth. They will also show some kind of response to the facial expressions of others. In general, by the time your baby is 9 months old, you should hope to see the very beginnings of social behaviors emerging.

Signs That May Show Up Before Your Baby’s First Birthday

When your baby reaches their first birthday, there’s cause for celebration. Of course, along with this milestone comes a visit with their pediatrician to review a whole list of milestones they should be reaching.
HealthyWay
For 1-year-olds, there are some bare-minimum developmental achievements they should have knocked out of the park. Babies this age should respond in some way when you say their name, even if it is just a glance in your direction. Your baby should also be talking some, even if they aren’t real words. Parents of typically developing children will have noticed babbling and baby talk by their first birthday.
Lastly, at this point your baby should be have picked up on some non-verbal actions such as waving, pointing, or reaching when they want to be held.
HealthyWay
Watching your child play is another way you can keep an eye out for the development of autism. By the time they are about a year old, your baby will begin to engage in very purposeful play.
They will start to use objects as they are meant to be used, according to the Autism Society, which says that pretending to talk on the phone or knowing to drink out of a glass are developmentally appropriate behaviors at this age.
HealthyWay
As your child approaches their first birthday, you can also watch out for the presence of alarming behaviors, instead of just watching for the absence of developmentally appropriate behaviors.
Repetitive behaviors in young children can be a sign of autism. If your child is engaging in self-stimulatory behavior such as rocking, hitting themselves, or twirling, this could be a clue they are struggling with their development.

Here’s what to do if you are concerned about your infant’s development.

If you notice your child is showing signs of developmental delays, it is understandable that you may be concerned. Your first step should always be a visit with your child’s pediatrician. They have received extensive training on spotting the earliest symptoms of autism in children.
HealthyWay
A visit with your child’s doctor will usually go one of two ways.
You may be told that your child’s delays are still within the realm of normal, since all kids develop at different paces.
At your visit your child’s doctors may instead conclude that the symptoms being displayed are reason for concern and then they will recommend next steps, like seeing a specialist or having your child formally evaluated for autism.
HealthyWay
No matter what you learn, your doctor, other healthcare providers, and parenting support groups will help you figure out next steps for how to best support your child.

9 Ways Your Smartphone Is Destroying Your Health

As smartphone technology has improved, my use has steadily increased. What I once used to check in with my parents while I was out with friends is now a personal computer, in a way. I work from my phone, I take pictures of my kids, and I keep up with my friends. To be perfectly honest, I wish I used my phone less. I know it distracts me from more important parts of my life.
HealthyWay
It’s more than a distraction, though. I have always suspected my phone was negatively affecting me in some ways. I notice I feel a bit jittery before bed if I have been using my phone too much late in the evening. At times it makes it difficult for me to fall asleep.
There was a time when I assumed I was simply hypersensitive to technology, but lately I have learned that most people experience negative side effects from overuse of their smartphones. In some cases, they don’t realize that their symptoms are connected to the device in their hands. Don’t believe me when I say it would do you good to cut back on your smartphone use?
Keep reading to find out how our society’s state of hyperconnectedness can negatively influence both our bodies and our minds.

1. Smartphones are killing thousands each year.

In 2015 alone, 3,477 deaths were attributed to texting and driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That means every day, nearly 10 people die because someone was too distracted by their phone to give driving their full attention.
HealthyWay
We’ve all been guilty of letting our devices keep us from making safe driving our top priority, but distracted driving is deadly driving. We can’t neglect our duty to put down the phone and drive safely.
If you are struggling to stay off of your phone while driving, it is best to remove the temptation altogether. Throw your phone in your purse or bag and put your bag in your back seat. Put on some music or a podcast if you’re bored with driving. It’s worth the lives you could save by staying away from your phone’s screen.

2. Your smartphone is giving you CVS.

When you spend several hours a day looking at a screen—and most of us do—it can negatively influence the health of your eyes. The American Optometric Association warns against extended use of tech, especially without breaks, because it could cause a wide range of symptoms from eyestrain and headaches to dry eyes and blurred vision.
Environmental factors such as bad lighting and glare on screens can worsen the eyestrain caused by routine screen use. Additionally, if you already have poor vision, you may be more susceptible to experiencing computer vision syndrome or CVS.
HealthyWay
To lessen the effect screens have on your eyes, don’t use screens as much. When you can’t cut back, make sure you are taking at least a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something far away.

3. Your smartphone can’t fix this common symptom.

If you suspect that your smartphone use is negatively affecting your mood, it definitely isn’t all in your head. Excessive smartphone use is directly tied with poor moods, according to the journal Personality and Individual Differences. People who check their phone constantly are likely trying to “fix” their depressive symptoms, but the habit they’re relying on doesn’t work.
HealthyWay
In fact, frequent use of social media has been found to play a role in depression, since users are apt to compare their own lives to the highlights being posted by others online, according to the Journal of Social & Clinical Psychology. For many, their smartphone is their connection to social media.
If you are experiencing feelings like jealousy, decreased self-esteem, or good old-fashioned FOMO, it might be time to take a step back and re-evaluate your smartphone use.

4. Your smartphone is sabotaging your diet.

If you’ve been trying to lose some weight but haven’t had a lot of luck reaching your goals, consider how your phone might be sabotaging your diet. In the simplest terms, the key to losing weight is consuming fewer calories than you are burning each day. This requires mindfulness of what goes into our bodies.
HealthyWay
When you bring your phone to the table, it distracts you from the task at hand—eating. For many, focusing on the wrong thing at mealtime might mean they don’t realize when they have had enough. They end up overeating. Overeating regularly will cause weight gain in most people, so put your phone away and pay attention to what you’re putting in your body.

5. Your smartphone can’t be your friend.

Smartphones are tricky little devils; they can lead heavy users to believe they are connected with their friends, when in reality they actually make people lonelier. Some people are prone to shyness or struggle with certain social interactions, and the key to feeling more socially competent is practice.
HealthyWay
Unfortunately, smartphones have provided an escape for those who feel discomfort in social settings, according to the journal Social Science Computer Review.
Before you write this off as something only the socially awkward experience, you should know that using smartphones to avoid social situations has becoming increasingly common.
HealthyWay
In fact, 89 percent of adults reported using their phone while at a social function, and 82 percent said they knew their habit of looking at their phone was keeping them from having meaningful conversations with others.

6. Your smartphone is turning you into an insomniac.

Sleep is essential to good health, and not getting enough of it has been linked to all kinds of long-term health conditions, including cancer, diabetes, and obesity. With as much as 35 percent of the adult population reporting experiences of short-term insomnia, it is easy to believe the research that suggests screens have something do with our sleep troubles.
HealthyWay
The body’s circadian rhythms are influenced in part by the hormone melatonin. How much melatonin the body makes and when it makes it is strongly influenced by the light we expose ourselves to late into the evening.
Blue light—the artificial light emitted by screened devices—has been found to be disruptive to sleep, according to the Harvard Health Letter. If you want to manage the effect that blue light has on your health, start cutting back on your phone use before bed.
HealthyWay
Experts recommend powering down as early as three hours before you plan to switch off the lights, which means it is probably time to head to the library and pick up a few good books.

7. Your smartphone is a pain in the neck.

It is no coincidence that more doctors are reporting treating young patients complaining of neck and upper back pain than they have in the past. These symptoms have been coined “text neck,” and it is exactly what it sounds like.
HealthyWay
When we lean over devices to send a text or check social media, the specific angle of our neck makes our head feel way heavier than it actually is. In fact, at texting angle, our 10- to 12-pound head actually puts 60 pounds of pressure on the neck, according to Health Essentials, a publication of the Cleveland Clinic.
This is causing a lot of pain for regular smartphone users. The primary symptom of text neck is strain and pain in the neck. Additionally, hunching over your phone can compress your lungs, limiting your breathing capacity and forcing your body to work harder to pump blood to your organs.

8. Your smartphone is giving you cell phone elbow.

The invention of the smartphone brought with it the advent of some brand-new health conditions that have been given pretty catchy names. Of course, the symptoms of cell phone elbow, texting claw, or Tinder thumb are anything but cute for those experiencing them.
HealthyWay
Repetitive motions can be hard on the body, especially if improper form and awkward movements are involved. More people are experiencing pain unique to how and how often they use their smartphones.
Heavy users who spend a lot of time texting or swiping are more likely to experience the symptoms of tendinitis, a condition characterized by joint pain and inflammation in the wrists and fingers.
HealthyWay
Want to avoid these uncomfortable symptoms? Text less, turn off Tinder, or just put down your phone for a while.

9. Your cell phone is playing tricks on your brain.

Have you ever felt your cell phone vibrate only to pick it up and see that no one has called or texted you? There is a name for this sensation, and you’re not the only one imagining things.
HealthyWay
Ringxiety is the name the internet has assigned to this incredibly strange phenomenon. The belief is that our extreme attachment to smartphones has created a sense of hypervigilance in regular users. According to The New York Times, the brain is making connections when you hear a sound that resembles your phone even a little bit.
Whether it is something similar in terms of vibration or a note in a song that sounds like a chime on your phone, you’ve got your phone on your mind, so your brain fills in the rest.
One suggestion for dealing with ringxiety is challenging yourself to check your phone less often. Try setting a timer on your phone, and force yourself to stay off it completely until the alarms sounds. Then slowly increase your phone-free time over several days. Adopting this habit is one way to fight back against the hypervigilant connection to smartphones that so many of us experience.
HealthyWay
Of course there is nothing wrong with using and liking technology. Smartphones allow us to remain connected to the people we care about, no matter where they are located—a few blocks over or halfway around the globe.
The internet is an exceptional source of information, and for many (me included) it is a source of livelihood for our families that is easily accessible from our phones. Like anything else in life, finding balance is the key to responsible use of technology.
HealthyWay
You don’t need to throw out your phone to decrease your risk of health complications. You simply need to cut back, take extended breaks during the day, and find other ways to fill your time. You’ll be glad you did. We promise.

Three Kids Is The Most Stressful Number (And Two Other Times Parenthood Is Just Plain Hard)

The first time I ventured out of the house with three kids, I tried to plan for anything that could possibly go wrong. I brought extra clothes for my newly potty-trained toddler and the newborn who was prone to blowouts, and I had a lengthy pep talk with my preschooler about being Mommy’s big helper.

Honestly, the whole outing went surprisingly well. No one had a tantrum, we made it out of the store and back home before the newborn wanted to nurse again, and I never had to break out the spare clothes I had packed.

HealthyWay

Even though things went as well as I could have hoped, I still returned home completely worn out. I had spent so much time stressing out about potential worst-case scenarios that I had put myself through more stress than any of my kids had.

Nearly a year later, I have a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a baby who will turn 1 in and month. I still haven’t stopped getting slightly worked up every time we have to leave the house.

HealthyWay

The truth is, having three kids has been a huge adjustment for our family. My husband and I no longer have a 1:1 ratio going on in our home. And when it’s just me, well, I don’t even have enough hands to hang on to each kid.

I’m not alone in my feelings that having three kids is hard. Moms just like me, who are juggling three little ones, are the most stressed-out moms, according to a survey by TODAY Moms.

HealthyWay

After surveying over 7,000 moms, TODAY Moms was able to glean some important information about stressed-out parents. Moms who have three kids seem to reach the peak of being totally strung out.

Moms with fewer kids have less stress, and moms with more have the experience that helps them to relax about new phases and stages.

HealthyWay

This study was also able to come up with an average stress level for mothers using the data they pulled from the 7,000 mothers they surveyed. On a scale of 1 to 10, the average mom reports a stress level of 8.5. That is a high number considering it is the baseline for many moms, but I’m honestly not all that surprised. Being a parent is plain hard, even if you don’t have three kids.

Middle School Melodrama

If you think parenting toddlers is hard, just wait until they reach middle school. As children approach early teen years, parents report that caring for them gets more stressful than ever before, according to the journal Developmental Psychology.

HealthyWay

Apparently, this is one of those age groups that brings uniquely stressful challenges. I’m not there yet. My oldest is a preschooler, and some days I have a hard time imagining there is anything more challenging than juggling newborn naps and toddler daredevil antics.

When you think about what middle schoolers experience, the related parenting stress completely makes sense. Those few years right before high school are characterized by a strong desire for autonomy.

HealthyWay

Typically preteen development drives them to push away from their parents and establish their own identity, according to EurekAlert!, a publication by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Naturally, it can be difficult for parents to loosen the reins, especially at an age when kids want independence but are still struggling to make responsible decisions.

Additionally, middle school is the height of puberty. A flux of hormones ushers in changes to personality, moodiness, and extreme self-consciousness about their changing bodies. For some families, this means their new teen is unpredictable or hard to be around at times.

HealthyWay

Some middle schoolers may even start engaging in risky behaviors, lashing out, or struggling with depression or anxiety for the first time. It is difficult to watch your child struggle, especially when they don’t really want to involve you in their biggest challenges.

At this age, children are also transitioning into a tougher social environment. For starters, middle school is markedly more difficult than elementary school, due in part to more demanding school schedules and increased homework.

HealthyWay

Add to that the peer pressure that typically starts right around this age, and it makes sense that so many kids are having such a hard time during this big life change.

Lastly, the middle schoolers aren’t the only ones changing in the family. It isn’t uncommon for parents to be in the midst of their own changes, according to the study’s authors. In fact, this is often when parents begin to experience more marked symptoms of their own aging as they grow older. This can increase the emotional impact of this phase of their children’s life.

Parenting When Your Child Has Exceptional Needs

For some families, parenting is always more challenging because their child has exceptional needs. For the parents of these children, being a mother or father is often characterized by times of fear and anxiety, according to Psychology Today.

HealthyWay

Parents may worry about their child’s future, wondering if their developmental or physical differences will limit their opportunities. They may also find themselves consumed by worries for their physical health, especially if their child has differences that require continuous medical care.

Caring for a child who has special needs also requires parents to take on a caregiver role for much longer than they would if they were raising typically developing children.

HealthyWay

Caregiving is associated with a high level of burnout and feelings of depression and loneliness. It can take a toll on marriages too, according to the Child Mind Institute.

How Stressed-Out Parents Should Deal

In ideal world, stressed-out parents would be able to reduce their source of stress, but if you fall into one of the categories listed above, you know that simply isn’t possible. So parents facing unique challenges have to get creative when it comes to coping with their circumstances.

HealthyWay

For most families, talking openly about the challenges being faced will spur helpful discourse for everyone involved, according to Developmental Psychology.

Whether you are entering into that middle school phase of life, adding another child to the family, or learning to care for children who have special needs, try to make time to have regular talks with your partner and your children.

HealthyWay

These talks don’t have to be complicated; just be honest about what everyone should expect from the next few months or years of your family life and allow everyone involved to express their feelings on the changes.

Next, stressed-out parents need to find outside support for themselves whenever possible. The good news is there are plenty of support groups out there. Moms who have young kids and are preparing to add another baby might find the solidarity they need most from a group like Mothers of Preschoolers.

HealthyWay

For parents who are feeling unprepared to transition their child into middle school, their child’s school counselor may be able to suggest resources and support groups that can address their fears.

When parenting kids with special needs is what is causing parents stress, local children’s hospitals typically have a database of area support groups, and private social media groups have become a great source of community for parents as well.

HealthyWay

When it comes down to it, if parents facing hard situations really want to feel equipped to parent well, they need to care for themselves first. In some cases, this might be asking for a little extra help, getting some time alone, or making a weekly visit with a therapist their top priority.

7 Things Pregnant Women Can Actually Use

Ever since I learned I was expecting my first child, I have fallen into a pattern I swore I would avoid—I always put my needs last.

HealthyWay

It isn’t really uncommon behavior for a mom, of course. It starts when we are first pregnant. We’re staring at the price tag of countless baby necessities—from the crib to the hundreds and hundreds of diapers we will use in their first year, and suddenly we start deciding our needs can be put aside.

Here’s what I’ve learned about putting your needs last—it doesn’t actually benefit your children in any way. You may feel like you are doing them a favor, but you know that tired cliché about putting on your oxygen mask first when the plane is going down? Well, it is completely true.

HealthyWay

Trust me, I’ve put my needs last countless times only to discover it depletes my ability to care for my kids well.

So we’re challenging you to do things differently this time around. Quit ignoring your needs and wants and instead decide to take care of yourself during your pregnancy. Pregnancy is difficult enough as it is; moms don’t need to sacrifice unnecessarily and make things harder than they need to be.

HealthyWay

Here are a few things pregnant moms can actually use, straight from expectant and new moms just like you.

A Morning Habit That Will Keep You and Baby Healthy

Taking a daily prenatal vitamin isn’t optional advice from your doctor, this little habit is important for keeping both you and your baby healthy. You’re growing a person!

So it makes sense that you might need a little extra help to keep your energy high and make sure both your and your baby’s needs are being met.

HealthyWay

There are a lot of prenatals out there, so when you are picking one out, you will want to be sure it has a few basic ingredients. Vitamins A, C,

HealthyWay

If you have exceptional dietary needs or you’re just plain confused about what vitamins are best for you, don’t be afraid to check in with your OB-GYN. Some doctors can offer recommendations, pass on coupons, or even prescribe a supplement so it will be covered by your insurance.

A Bedtime Necessity That Will Help You Stay Rested

For a lot of women, pregnancy insomnia starts early on. Getting as much rest as you can during pregnancy is crucial, especially as the third trimester draws near. Unfortunately, discomfort from pregnancy makes getting sleep a difficult task.

HealthyWay

For some, a special pregnancy pillow can help, especially for those who sleep on their stomachs. Check out the Cozy Bump below:

As it turns out, for most moms the solution to tossing and turning while pre
gnant is a lot simpler than an expensive pregnancy pillow. Emma Shay, who is expecting her first, told HealthyWay she bought a pregnancy pillow but hated it. In the end, she settled on a good body pillow.

The perk of a good body pillow is that it can adjust to your needs. During your third trimester, you may need to prop yourself up in a nest of pillows so you can sleep upright to combat heartburn, or you might need a pillow behind your back to support the strain caused by your growing belly.

HealthyWay

The Snuggle-Pedic Memory Foam Body Pillow is a popular choice for expectant moms, thanks to its “kool-flow” cover that fights overheating during the night.

These Supplements Could End Your Nausea.

Morning sickness during the first trimester may be common, but that doesn’t make it any easier for expectant moms. Whether you are dealing with occasional nausea or having trouble keeping down anything you eat, the first trimester just might be the hardest part of your pregnancy.

HealthyWay

Betsy Larson, who is expecting her second child, swore by a combination of supplements recommended to her by her doctor.

“I took B12 and Unisom at night during my first trimester,” Larson said. “It really helps with nausea!”

HealthyWay

Of course, before you start taking anything new during your pregnancy, you should check with your doctor. Once you have the all clear, you can buy both B12 and Unisom over the counter at your local pharmacy.

Say Goodbye to Your Cankles.

It’s true that many women experience swelling in the hands, legs, and feet during pregnancy, but ignoring swelling isn’t a great approach. For starters, swollen feet can be really uncomfortable, and any extreme swelling that seems to come out of nowhere could be a sign something else is going on.

HealthyWay

Once you have checked in with your doctor and determined that what you are experiencing is just your run-of-the-mill pregnancy swelling, you’ll be more comfortable if you find a way to address your cankles and swollen toes.

“Compression stockings were a lifesaver,” mom of three Jayne Heinrich told me. “Especially when I was at work and on my feet all day.”

HealthyWay

You can find pretty basic pregnancy compression stockingsDr. Leonard’s

on Amazon, and if your swelling is really giving you trouble, your doctor may be able to recommend medical-grade stockings to make life more bearable while you wait for Baby’s arrival.

Fight off Stretch Marks One Massage at a Time.

As your baby grows, so will your belly, stretching your skin unlike it has ever been stretched before. Rapid growth can create stretch marks in many women. In some cases they’re genetic and unavoidable, but in many instances there are things you can do to keep them from becoming too extreme.

With the number of products on the market bragging about their ability to keep stretch marks at bay, it’s hard to know which creams are worth the money.

HealthyWay

The secret to avoiding stretch marks is all about vitamin E, which helps the skin stay elastic so it can adapt to all of that growth. And even if you are genetically prone to stretch marks, a good lotion or cream will also help you keep your skin from getting itchy around those marks.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula With Vitamin E,” Larson suggested. “I used it every night before bed during pregnancy; I was never itchy and…no stretch marks!”

Accommodate Your Growing Belly Without Breaking the Bank.

One little-known secret of pregnancy is just how expensive maternity clothes can be. It seems like the clothes made for expectant moms are the only items that never go on sale—and at their regular price, they’re significantly pricier than conventional items.

Buying a whole new wardrobe during pregnancy simply isn’t affordable for a lot of moms, and that’s why this product really rocks. The Bellaband by Ingrid & Isabel is a thick elastic band you can slide over your unbuttoned jeans.

HealthyWay

With the help of this band, you might be able to wear your pre-pregnancy jeans throughout your pregnancy, so all you need to purchase are some cute maternity tops and a comfy pair of sweatpants.

A Little Extra Love for Your Aching Feet

As the end of your pregnancy draws near, you’re going to notice just how sore your feet are and how hard it is to bend over and lace up your shoes. Make getting dressed in the morning a little easier with a couple of pairs of comfortable slip-on shoes.

HealthyWay

During the colder months, a lot of moms love these ballet flats made specifically for pregnancy. They slip right on and have an aloe-infused insole for extra comfort. There are also summer options, like this cute wedge sandal. Of course, when the last weeks of your pregnancy roll around, you just might have to break out bigger shoes depending on how much swelling you experience.

“I had to straight up buy a pair of men’s flip flops by the end of my summer pregnancy,” mom Jessica Hoffman confessed.

Here’s hoping this list of pregnancy essentials will inspire you to take care of your changing body. It’s your baby’s home for more than nine months, and when your new little one arrives, it will provide the nutrition and comfort they need to thrive.

HealthyWay

Do yourself and your baby a favor and make getting rest and staying healthy your number one priority.

Hey Moms: Science Can Explain Why You Parent The Way You Do

For me, giving birth to each of my three children has been a jarring and disruptive experience. I carried them around inside of my body for more than nine months and then suddenly, over the course of 10 hours or so of labor, we became two separate people.

HealthyWay

At least that’s how it felt—that when I celebrated the birth of my children, I also let go of another season of our life together, our amazing interdependence. Even so, I have always felt that my babies are still a part of me.

Whenever I pull my infant in close to my chest to nurse, I chase down my toddler to smother her in kisses, or I snuggle my preschooler in close to read books before bed, I know we are still connected to one another.

HealthyWay

I have always assumed the mother–child bond I was experiencing was just an emotional connection. But recent research has provided an explanation for a deeper connection between mother and child. During pregnancy the growing fetus has a lasting impact on the mother’s body.

The placenta, which has long been known to provide essentials to the growing baby, also serves as an avenue for transfer of fetal cells into the mother’s body, according to Smithsonian magazine.

HealthyWay

Over time, the mother’s immune system gets rid of many of those cells, but some adapt to the mother’s body in a way that allows them to fly under the radar and remain inside of her for years to come.

Amazing, isn’t it? The grade-schooler who sits across from you at the table or the baby you said a difficult goodbye to early in your pregnancy could still be influencing your cellular makeup today.

HealthyWay

Of course, research has a ways to go before we can figure out the exact implications of how fetal cells manipulate their mother’s body. We certainly have made a lot of progress in recent years in our quest to explain why humans do the things we do.

More than ever, we can observe specific parenting behaviors and point to an explanation for these habits. In short, science can explain why you parent the way you do.

Here’s why so many moms hold their baby the same way.

Have you ever noticed that most moms hoist their baby onto their left hip and hold them there, instead of switching from side to side?

HealthyWay

This isn’t merely a coincidence. This habit of holding a baby on your left side is observed in a large percentage of human mothers and even in other mammals, according to the journal Developmental Science.

Left-cradling bias, as this behavior is called, is believed to be explained by the way humans process social and emotional interactions, according to the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution. Some of the functions performed by the brain are worked out in one hemisphere or the other; this is called lateralization.

Specifically relevant to left-cradling bias is that fact that the right hemisphere of the brain, which receives information from the left side of the body, is the dominant location for processing emotional and social experiences.

HealthyWay

To put it simply—when Mom holds Baby on her left side, she is more adept at interpreting their emotional cues. Scientists don’t believe this is coincidence. Instead they are confident this is an evolutionary behavior adopted by mothers whose main priority early on is meeting their child’s emotional and physical needs.

Here’s why you scrubbed your kitchen floor when you were nine months pregnant.

At the end of each of my pregnancies, I found myself obsessing over the most seemingly insignificant things. With my second baby, for instance, I spent two weeks searching our home from top to bottom, intent on finding handful of missing pieces from my toddler’s puzzle collection.

HealthyWay

When I neared the end of my third pregnancy, I grew fixated on keeping laundry going non-stop because I was determined I wouldn’t have dirty laundry in the house when the baby was born.

These kinds of behaviors are so common among expectant mothers, we joke about with our pregnant friends. We typically assume a mother who is cleaning, organizing, or cooking is getting ready to give birth.

This phenomenon, called nesting, isn’t simply a social norm or an old wives’ tale. There is actually a scientific explanation for why women adopt nesting behaviors near the end of their pregnancies, according to the journal Evolution & Human Behavior. It’s all about controlling the environment the baby will be born into.

Anthropologists report that this behavior was observed in our ancestors and is now repeated by modern mothers. Nesting tends to peak during the third trimester, when expectant mothers focus their energy on creating a safe environment for their new child.

HealthyWay

Women don’t just reorganize their belongings; they tend to focus some of their energy on their relationships too. According to this study, expectant mothers are driven to consider whom they want near their child after birth, too.

A natural desire to protect their baby from unknown dangers or foreign pathogens compels an unconscious drive to steer clear of strangers during late pregnancy.

Here’s why you turn into a hermit right before birth.

At the end of a pregnancy, it is fairly typical for expectant moms to feel compelled to hunker down and stay home until the arrival of their new baby.

HealthyWay

Turning into a hermit during the third trimester isn’t just because it is too much work to get your aching and swollen body off the couch. There is an evolutionary explanation for why women turn into homebodies late in their pregnancies.

It seems that in pregnant women there is an innate knowledge that home is the safest place to be. Research suggests that pregnant women prefer to stay home because they know it is the most comfortable place to give birth and likely to be the most danger free place for a vulnerable newborn.

HealthyWay

This is an evolutionary behavior and is believed to have been passed down from ancestors who had more immediate dangers in the environment surrounding their homes, according to Evolution & Human Behavior.

Here’s why you like cute babies so much.

There’s no denying it: Human beings have a strong preference for really cute babies. When it comes to what is and isn’t considered cute, there are some objective principles that influence this preference.

HealthyWay

Babies with large eyes, small mouths and noses, and a symmetrical face tend to be seen as more attractive, according to Dr. Jeffrey Kurland, professor of anthropology and development at Penn State.

There are perks to being cute, too. As embarrassing as it may be to acknowledge, both men and women tend to show preferential treatment to cute kids. Don’t beat yourself up too much; there is an evolutionary explanation for such favoritism.

HealthyWay

The same characteristics that are commonly assoc
iated with cuteness in babies have also been associated with a perception of overall well-being. So the belief is that the preference for cute babies is really just a byproduct of preferring and promoting the growth of babies who appear to have a survival advantage over less-cute babies.

We might not realize it at the time, but it seems that a lot of the automatic behaviors we engage in as mothers are all about survival of our children and our family line.

HealthyWay

From the way we hold our babies to that irresistible urge to straighten the linen closet for the tenth time in a week, we’re just following an unconscious drive set in motion long before our own mothers were expecting our arrival.

10 Secrets Most People Don't Know About Whole Foods

When Whole Foods began offering pre-peeled oranges, packaged in plastic and sold at $5.99 a pound, the world couldn’t help but notice. Keyboard warriors around the globe took to Twitter to call them out on just how bizarre this particular product was.

“If only nature would find a way to cover these oranges so we didn’t need to waste so much plastic on them,” wrote Nathalie Gordon in a tweet that quickly went viral. It drew a massive amount of attention to this chain and the irony of a store known for healthy and environmentally responsible foods selling an orange in a plastic container.

HealthyWay

Within hours, Whole Foods publicly responded to the Twitter firestorm by removing the product from their shelves and returning to selling oranges in the original packaging—their peels.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Whole Foods and their clientele have been noticed for their strange practices. They have a certain reputation for being unique and uniquely expensive.

With the recent buzz surrounding the purchase of Whole Foods by Amazon, we thought it would be interesting to dig into a few secrets most people don’t know about Whole Foods. Here’s the inside scoop.

1. How to Get the Most Bang for Your Buck

It’s no secret that shopping at Whole Foods isn’t exactly budget friendly. In fact, one popular nickname for the store is Whole Paycheck, a nod at how easy it is to blow most of your money in a single trip.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Still, there are ways to save money on your organic produce and specialty supplements, and it is all about when you shop. The sales cycle at Whole Foods begins and ends on Wednesday.

This means that every Wednesday you can shop both the previous week’s sales and the sales of the upcoming week. So next hump day, hightail it to Whole Foods for the best deals this store has to offer.

2. You don’t have to put up with rotten food.

There is nothing quite as frustrating as returning home from a grocery trip only to find that a mold-covered berry was hiding in the middle of your pint or the new product you grabbed on a whim is actually disgusting. The good news about shopping at Whole Foods is they have a no-questions-asked return policy.

HealthyWay

There doesn’t actually need to be something wrong with the food you bought; just not liking it is enough. If you aren’t satisfied with your purchase they will either give you cash back or give you store credit.

3. Whole Foods has a “never” list.

The founding principle of Whole Foods was that food that is free from less-than-healthy ingredients should be accessible to everyone. So Whole Foods has pretty strict rules about what can never be found in their products.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Specifically, anything you buy at Whole Foods will be free from artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and colors and won’t contain any hydrogenated fats. Outside of this rule, they also carry a wide variety of organic and responsibly sourced foods and other household goods.

4. You still need to use discretion.

It is easy to assume that just because you’re shopping at a store known for their nutritious foods, anything you buy there will be good for you. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Not everything there is high quality or even healthy, according to one anonymous employee interviewed by Thrillist. Asking employees’ advice isn’t enough, either, since they’re not allowed to be up front about the uselessness of certain products.

Any time you plan on going for a shopping spree at Whole Foods, be prepared to spend some time reading the labels of any packaged products you buy or do a quick Google search on the actual health benefits of certain supplements.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Let’s face it, Whole Foods is simply too expensive to spend money on something that doesn’t deliver what is promised.

5. You’re going to need a list.

The age-old budgeting advic
e of creating a list and sticking to it religiously is a necessity if you’re going to be making a trip to Whole Foods.

HealthyWay

They may have killer organic produce, and they might be the only grocery store in miles selling grass-fed beef, but they also have a lot of products you really don’t need to buy if you’re living on a budget.

Prepare yourself to be tempted to try gimmicky products like store-brand kombucha or a $5 bag of organic marshmallows.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Make your list ahead of time, stick with it, and leave with money still in the bank.

6. If you don’t love it, leave it behind.

It is hard to shell out your hard earned cash for products you aren’t certain you will love, so it’s important to know that Whole Foods has a policy that allows customers to try before you buy.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Even if you are interested in taste-testing a packaged product, they will open up a box for a free sample before you commit to the purchase. It’s a good way to avoid unnecessary spending on things you won’t eat, and it almost beats the free samples at Costco.

7. Don’t waste your money on these items.

Rumor has it the organic produce available at Whole Foods is far better quality than any available at most box stores and supermarkets, but there are some items you are better off not buying at all.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Specifically, buying conventional (i.e., not organic) products at Whole Foods is a waste of money. Regular produce, for instance, is likely to be the exact same choice available at a less expensive supermarket, according to one insider article written by a former Whole Foods employee.

8. A free perk you probably missed.

Before you head toward the checkout line, make sure you’re not missing out on this little-known free perk offered by the butchers at most Whole Foods locations. Apparently, if you pick up a cut of meat, they will also dress it for you.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

Their butchers can do specialty cuts; some even have rubs and seasonings and will get your meat totally ready to be cooked. Additionally, if you are looking for a creative way to prepare your meat, ask the butcher for tips. They’re the experts on the meat and on how it tastes best.

9. It pays to be healthy. (At least if you’re an employee.)

Employee discounts are a fairly common practice among grocery stores, but Whole Foods takes their employee perks to an entirely new level.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

The percentage employees receive off their grocery purchases is actually based on how healthy they are perceived to be.

The store’s Get Healthy plan is based on employees’ body mass index (BMI), and those with a lower number get a better discount on their groceries.

HealthyWay
Whole Foods Market®

This hasn’t been the most popular incentive program, that’s for sure. Whole Foods has faced criticism for discriminating based on BMI, since this measurement has been deemed ineffective at determining a person’s overall health.

10. The company works hard to prevent waste.

When you run a big box grocery store, wasting food seems inevitable. However, Whole Foods works hard to prevent unused food from being thrown away. Their first approach is to serve fresh food that is near expiration on their salad bar, according to an anonymous employee interviewed by Thrillist.

Additionally, Whole Foods is known for donating expired food to food pantries and other nonprofit organizations, which led to the company being awarded to the 2013 Outstanding Food Donor Award from Food Lifeline.

7 Strange Things Found Inside Of People

Early this summer, a friend of mine who is a mom of four shared an amazing image on her Facebook feed that took my breath away. It was an x-ray taken of her oldest son with quarter stuck in his throat.

HealthyWay

Apparently, he had put the quarter in his mouth but hadn’t intended to swallow it. Whoops! A trip to the emergency room and a very expensive medical bill were the end of that potential catastrophe for this family.

Swallowing inedible objects is commonplace for toddlers and young kids, but as they grow older, this behavior disappears. At least it is supposed to disappear.

HealthyWay

So when you hear a story of person with something strange found inside of their body, you can’t help but be curious. How did it get there? Did they swallow it on purpose or was it simply an odd accident? Check out these amazing and bizarre cases of strange objects found inside people.

1. Are you forgetting something?

The skills necessary to become a surgeon are impressive, making medical professionals seem as if they are beyond reproach. Still, even those with the highest medical training make mistakes from time to time.

HealthyWay

Unfortunately, these mistakes can come at the expense of vulnerable patients. Not all mistakes cost a patient their life, but many result in the need for further medical treatment and at the least, a scary story to tell.

A 36-year-old woman presented to the hospital after experiencing some strange symptoms months after a surgery. According to the journal Hippokratia, an x-ray revealed a surgical instrument had actually been left behind and was migrating through her body. Of course, she was rushed into surgery and the instrument was removed from her colon.

HealthyWay

This specific instance inspired a case study that suggested that all surgical instruments be counted twice before a surgical patient is closed up. Here’s hoping this practice keeps something similar from happening again!

2. You know that thing your mother told you about swallowing seeds?

When I was a child, my parents used to tease me about swallowing watermelon seeds, saying a watermelon just might grow inside of me. As unlikely as it may seem, there might be a kernel of truth in all of that teasing.

HealthyWay

When a 75-year-old living in Cape Cod began to experience some alarming respiratory symptoms, his doctors suspected he might have developed a dangerous tumor in his lung. His surgery revealed otherwise when a small pea shoot was removed.

Doctor’s believe that this man had accidentally inhaled the seed and then it became lodged in his lung. If you know anything about the way plants develop, you might find yourself wondering how the pea plant began to grow.

HealthyWay

The pea managed to sprout because most pea plants begin their growth underground. In the very beginning stages, a pea plant only needs warmth and moisture to sprout. Once it breaks through the soil, it receives the sunlight it really needs to thrive.

For this reason, the sprout found in this man’s lung was very small, its growth limited by the lack of light.

Although the patient was already experiencing other problems with his lung, removal of the pea did relieve the symptoms initially believed to be caused by a tumor.

3. That’s not what silverware is for.

Pica is an unusual eating disorder that causes people to feel a compulsion to ingest things that aren’t food. In most cases, people eat things like drywall, dirt, or hair, but stranger cases have been reported.

HealthyWay

When a 52-year-old woman living in Holland showed up at the emergency room complaining of a bad stomachache, doctors never expected to find a collection of cutlery. An x-ray revealed she had eaten 78 forks and spoons.

When asked why, she said she had merely felt a compulsion to do it.

Since having the cutlery removed, the patient has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, a complicated mental health issue that causes individuals to experience intense mood swings and act out in impulsive and inappropriate ways.

4. I’m so hungry I could eat a robot.

Among the tales of strange things found inside of people, the story of Michel Lotito is perhaps the most difficult to comprehend. Over the course of his life, Lotito was believed to have ingested as much as nine tons of metal.

HealthyWay

All of his eating of strange things began when he was 9 years old. He was diagnosed with pica after he his parents discovered him snacking on the family’s television set. Lotito continued this strange and dangerous habit, discovering he had an incredible tolerance for sharp and rigid objects.

His disorder became his career when he realized he could eat inedible objects as a form of entertainment.

HealthyWay

Among the most bizarre things consumed by Lotito is a robot eaten over the course of three weeks, multiple bicycles, and two beds. His biggest accomplishment (if you want to call it that) was eating entire airplane. Over a period of two years, Lotito ate a Cessna 150 Airplane, one bite at a time.

5. May Contain Small Parts

After their 8-year-old daughter began experiencing pain so severe she could barely stand up, two parents were horrified to learn she had swallowed over 30 small magnets and steel balls that were in one of her toys.

HealthyWay

Amazingly, 8-year-old Haley survived after spending two weeks in the hospital.

Swallowing inedible objects is always dangerous, but magnets present a serious risk. Eating two magnets can actually result in the death of a patient, because the human body cannot pass them like other objects.

HealthyWay

Because of this, parents should always watch their children with toys that have magnetic components.

6. Well, that’s one way to win a fight.

After getting in a heated argument with her boyfriend, one woman in China decided to take a unique approach to getting revenge. She swallowed 20 cobblestones, one by one, to get her boyfriend’s attention.

HealthyWay

When she showed up at the hospital, she explained to her doctors that she had believed she would pass the stones. Instead, the cobblestones remained intact and had to be surgically removed from her body. Surely she got her boyfriend’s attention, but was it worth it?

7. What’s that in your lung?

A few years back, an amazing story made its way around the internet. It was the tale of a Russian man who showed up to the hospital complaining of severe chest pain. Doctors were concerned that he might have a cancerous tumor.

The patient had been coughing up blood and his worried doctors scheduled surgery right away. According to reports, they were amazed to find he didn’t have cancer; instead he had a fir tree growing in his lung.

HealthyWay

Supposedly, the tree was five centimeters long and the p
atient was suspected to have inhaled it, after which it implanted in his lung. His doctors were quoted as saying the tree was actually pushing against his capillaries, which would explain his pain and the coughing up of blood.

If this story seems too bizarre to be true, that’s because it just might be. While some sources still report this as a true story, others have removed the story, and still others are arguing it’s a fabrication. It just goes to show you can’t believe everything you read on the internet.

Release Your Inner Child With These 11 Kids' Products Being Marketed To Adults

There is a fairly common technique used by marketing professionals to increase their potential for profit. They look at a product and ask themselves how they can shift their target audience and how they can market their product to encourage more sales.

HealthyWay

Perhaps one of the most obvious cases of this approach is Lego bricks. Over the last several years Lego sets made specifically for a female audience have increased. Now entire aisles exist to house sets of these purple, pink, and yellow buildable toys.

Less obvious, perhaps, is the practice of taking products made for children and marketing them to adults. Shifting the target age demographic for a product gives manufacturers big opportunities to make more money off consumers, and it gives consumers the chance to relive their childhood all over again.

HealthyWay

Sound like something you’d be into? Check out these 11 products made for kids that are now being marketed at adults.

1. Get your happily ever after.

Move over, preschoolers decked out in Minnie Mouse ears, it’s time to share the happiest place on earth with the adults living out their Walt Disney World honeymoon dreams.

HealthyWay

Of course, romance may not be the first thing that pops in your mind when you think of posing next to a Disney Princess, but for some newlyweds, there is nothing they would rather do than spend a few days in this magical destination.

Disney has capitalized on this desire too.

HealthyWay

Honeymooners can make reservations at on-site fine dining options, book spa services, and then crash in the luxurious bed at one of the upscale hotels.

2. For Adults Who Can’t Sit Still

Originally created for kids struggling to sit still during school, fidget spinners have become a craze in a very short time. Although stores have repeatedly sold out of these spinning distractions, apparently getting a spinner in the hands of every child in America wasn’t enough.

HealthyWay

Now fidget spinners are being sold to adults in distinguished-looking hardwood or rose gold. If you decide to indulge in this toy, it might be best to hide it from the littlest members of your household if you don’t want it to go missing right away.

3. Break out your crayons.

If fidgeting with a spinning toy doesn’t calm your nerves, maybe this next kids’ product being marketed to adults will do the trick.

Adult coloring books have caught on like wildfire over the past few years, and you can find them in the checkout line of most stores. With themes like underwater life, mandala designs, and sugar skulls, coloring books are catching the eye of amateur artists of all ages.

HealthyWay

The real attraction for many adults, however, is that these products are being marketed as a source of calm and a means of reducing anxiety. In a time when Americans are reporting being more stressed than ever before, it’s easy to understand the appeal of a little cheap art therapy.

4. Satisfy your sweet tooth.

Noshing on sweets certainly isn’t a new practice for adults, but more are setting aside their dark chocolate and nut-filled treats for something a little more juvenile.

HealthyWay
Sugarfina

Candy typically sold to children is being reimagined for adults in candy stores. By employing fancier packaging and incorporating flavors appreciated by a more sophisticated palate, candy stores have found creative ways to sell their products to an older crowd. Bubbly gummy bears? Sign us up!

5. Cruisin’ Down the Street in My Sweet Ride

For most toddlers, a tricycle seems like a rite of passage. Who doesn’t remember cruisin’ down the block on their Big Wheel?

HealthyWay
High Roller USA

Now 2-year-olds aren’t the only ones hitting the sidewalk on their three-wheeled bike. As strange as it may seem, tricycles are now being marketed at kids of all ages. Priced anywhere from $60 to just under a grand, these bikes are made with alloy metal strong enough to support an adult.

6. Never grow up.

These days, there is a good chance the man in your life is just as into action figures as your 7-year-old son is.

HealthyWay

Over the last decade and a half, adult action figures have been marketed to sci-fi geeks and gamers as one more way to share with the world what they’re into. You might find these action figures littering a coworker’s cubicle or safely displayed in a glass case at home.

The smartest manufacturers of these products are turning them into collector’s items, selling a limited quantity to fanatics at a higher price.

7. The Easiest Sack Lunch out There

When it comes to watching what you spend, the sack lunch is the gold standard of the most frugal folks out there. So it makes sense that the makers of Lunchables took advantage of this habit by aiming their marketing at grown-ups.

HealthyWay

To capture the attention of adults who seem more worried about health than what type of cookie they can find in the bright yellow box, Lunchables began producing energy packs, filled with cheese, meat, and nuts. Sounds pretty good, if you ask us.

8. When You’re in the Mood for a Hot Lunch

What’s a brand to do when selling to college kids and poor bachelors isn’t bringing in the revenue they dreamed of? Simple: Introduce a few new products marketed toward a more sophisticated crowd.

HealthyWay
Lenin and McCarthy/Wikimedia Commons

This is the approach Hot Pockets used when they began selling their gourmet pockets. Their hope? To capture the attention of true foodies. We have a feeling that will be easier said than done, although we must admit that Steak & Cheddar with Garlicky Crust doesn’t sound half bad.

9. It’s a lifestyle.

It’s hard to believe there was ever a time when video games weren’t being marketed to adults, but grown men haven’t always been gaming into the early morning hours.

HealthyWay

Initially, game systems like the original Nintendo were meant for upper elementary and high school–aged kids. As game systems became more advanced, so did their users. Modern online gaming is full of strategy, community. and impressive graphics—exactly what’s needed to attract an older group of players.

10. Everyone loves an easy read.

This trend dates back to the introduction of Harry Potter to the reading world.

HealthyWay

When this fantasy series caught on, adults became obsessed, too. Now, Potter isn’t the only young adult fiction being devoured by adults.

Over half of young adult novels are actually being read by people over the age of 18 years. From The Hunger Games to The Fault in Our Stars, even though these easy reads were written for a much younger audience, they have story lines gripping enough to attract all ages.

11. When You Gotta Go

This last product may have been created for babies, but it is now being marketed to adults out of pure necessity.

HealthyWay

Adult diapers first hit the shelves in 1990 and were marketed as an adult incontinence brief, primarily sold to aging adults who were getting health care that enabled them to remain active into old age. It’s really amazing to think that something that is now a staple in hospitals and nursing homes has only been available for just over a quarter century.

What do you think? Will one of these kids’ products being market to adults find their way into your shopping basket the next time you’re at the store? I’ve personally got my eye on a floral coloring book to pass the time on our next family road trip.

10 Weird Human Behaviors That Are Easily Explained By Science

Why do we do the things we do? We may never have all of the information needed to answer this question in its entirety, but we certainly understand humans much better than we did just a few decades ago.

HealthyWay

In fact, an entire field of science has been devoted to studying human behavior: evolutionary psychology. This field of research exists to explore why humans tend to behave a certain way and why we engage in specific habits without conscious thought.

Here’s the thing. As weird as humans may seem, we’re actually incredibly predictable. We do the same things over and over again, and some of those things are downright weird if you take the time to think about it.

HealthyWay

We were curious if explanations existed for some the strangest of the strange, those things all humans do but no one really knows why. In short, it all comes down to evolution. The things we do are all about survival. Here’s the science behind some of the weirdest human behaviors out there.

1. It’s in his kiss.

Okay, at first glance, kissing may not seem all that weird. The more you think about, though, doesn’t it seem a little strange? We lock lips with people we like the most. Why, exactly, is this our go-to way to show our affection?

HealthyWay

Although there is still much debate about why we started kissing in the first place, scientists believe they have nailed down at least a partial explanation for this behavior. When we kiss, we actually send information back and forth in the form of pheromones.

This information has an important role in helping us determine if a potential mate has promise for the long haul. One of the biggest factors being considered is whether their immune system is different from ours. This diversity is actually beneficial to offspring.

2. You’re so cute, I want to eat you?

We may not be so quick to admit it, but we’ve all felt that strange compulsion to nibble a baby’s toes from time to time. As bizarre as it may sound, this is typical behavior.

HealthyWay

Scientists believe there are at least a couple of factors at work here.

When we see or smell an adorable baby or some other tiny, huggable thing, it actually activates the same pleasure/reward center of our brains that is turned on by looking at delicious food, according to Scientific American.

So the desire to nibble a little baby might simply be a case of our brains having similar responses to similar stimuli.

Another theory about this seemingly strange phenomenon notes that “social biting” is a common occurrence among mammals. For instance, some other primates are known to gently bite each other in a non-threatening manner. Scientists believe that this may be a way of building trust—demonstrating that even if you find your thigh in your mother’s mouth, she will not harm you.

HealthyWay

Regardless of the possible explanations for this kooky desire, it goes without saying that a bento box makes for a better cute snack than a baby.

3. The Trick That Helps You Concentrate

There is nothing cuter than watching a toddler, hard at work on their latest masterpiece, with their tongue sticking out of their mouth in concentration. The reason this behavior is so commonplace is that it is actually programmed in our brains.

HealthyWay

As humans developed language, we started with grunts and gestures to communicate our message with each other. According to scientists, children stick their tongue out during a challenging task because tough tasks are tripping a kind of loop in their brain that causes them to revert to some of the gestural language of our ancestors. This may also be why we rely on our hands when we’re trying to communicate something hard
to explain.

4. Anger looks the same in every corner of the globe.

How we act on our anger may vary from culture to culture and personality to personality, but human beings share a common facial expression when we feel overwhelmed by anger.

HealthyWay

Most humans experience anger on their face by clenching up their facial muscles and gritting their teeth. In fact, even when some variance exists in the appearance of anger, the same muscles are being activated.

There is an evolutionary explanation for gritting our teeth; it’s all about intimidation.

HealthyWay

Flexing of the facial muscles clearly communicates the emotion of anger and along with it an understanding that we will use our power to get our way.

5. The Itch You Can’t Scratch

Scratching seems like common sense behavior, but it is strange to think that we inflict more discomfort on ourselves to relieve an annoying itch. There is an explanation for this approach.

HealthyWay

Scientists say it was borne out of a desire to quickly remove whatever was irritating your skin. And when you keep scratching, you activate more nerves than the itching, which offers your brain a distraction from the itch.

6. The Devil on Your Shoulder

Decision making isn’t always an easy task. To simplify making choices, most humans engage in the weird behavior of actually arguing with ourselves. Whether it’s out loud in the privacy of our car during rush hour or a silent debate in the line at Starbucks, it’s something everyone does.

HealthyWay

As it turns out, the way our brain thinks about who we will be in the future is really surprising. Scientists have theorized that our brains see our future self as a separate person. So those lively arguments we’re having about our next decision, big or small, feel really real inside of our minds.

7. If You’ve Ever Punched a Wall

When we’re really angry, human beings have a tendency to want to act out. Although it is no longer considered socially acceptable to punch a wall (or another human) when we’re upset, the compulsion toward aggression is an evolutionary behavior.

HealthyWay

Scientists believe this desire to fight is hardwired into our brains. Early humans had to defend themselves to survive, so aggression came in handy. In modern times, we’re rarely faced with life-threatening situations, but our primal aggression hasn’t disappeared.

8. I heard it through the grapevine.

None of us are proud of it, but we have all shared a piece of juicy gossip at some point in our lives. As harmful as this habit may seem, there is actually an evolutionary explanation for why we gossip.

HealthyWay

As humans, we become obsessed with the potential flaws of others because establishing a safe people group in which you belong is important to survival. In the past, it was a matter of trusting others with our lives. These days, gossiping has evolved into a way to feel you belong.

9. I love to laugh.

Laughter may be a language spoken all over the world, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a strange behavior. Why do we belt out weird noises when something tickles us?

HealthyWay

Scientists know it is unconscious, meaning you can’t just make it happen. Additionally, research is clear that we laugh as a social behavior, not just because we find something funny, which is why people rarely laugh when they’re all alone. In fact, the clearest explanation of why we laugh is that we do it to establish relationships with others.

10. Closeness to the People We Love

Feeling the desire to be close to the people we care about is normal. We crave hugs and cuddling, even with people we are not romantically involved with.

HealthyWay

There’s a scientific explanation for why human beings like to hug each other.

Basically, most babies and young children get hugged a lot because this is how their caretakers comfort them when they’re upset. As children grow into teenagers, those hugs decrease in frequency.

HealthyWay

In adulthood, when we experience something that triggers a reaction of regression, we crave the affection of our childhood. That’s kind of sweet, when you think about it.

12 Underrated Parenting Products That Work

I will never forget the first time I tried to put together a baby registry. I was expecting my first, and I had set aside an entire evening to scan all of my must-haves for my little girl. I prepped in advance with a list, thinking I had done the hard work already.
When I got to the store, however, I realized the hard work had barely begun. It hadn’t been enough to write “bottles” and “car seat” on my list, I now had to decide between countless brands and their various models. I was so overwhelmed that I left the store with just a handful of items on my registry.
A lot has changed since then. I’ve had three babies, and I’ve owned countless products and gadgets marketed at parents and their offspring. I’ve spent too much. I’ve bought things I never used and done without things that probably would have made life with a newborn much simpler. Perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned that you can’t always trust marketing.
Some items seemed like a must-have, based on how heavily they were marketed online and in stores, but they just ended up taking up space in my home. Others were never marketed as must-haves but ended up being the life-saving parenting products I refuse to do without.
That had me wondering: Are there other products I’m missing out on simply because they’re underrated or don’t have endcap displays on the aisles at box stores? I did some digging around and found a whole list of products that moms and dads swear changed their lives.

1. The Solution to the Very Worst Rash

Most moms have a rash cream they love for everyday use, but when the worst of the worst rashes occur, complete with raw skin and blisters, not all butt pastes are created equal. Honestly, there are a lot of gimmicky products on the market, from expensive all-natural options to strange old wives tales like rubbing your baby’s bottom in egg white.
Don’t go searching for a fancy paste; sometimes simpler is better. Moms know that good old-fashioned Desitin is completely underrated. Desitin contains zinc oxide, a mineral that is completely safe for baby skin and speeds up healing.

2. Need an extra hand? This product makes that possible.

HealthyWay
Daniel Wiseman

Babywearing isn’t reserved for “crunchy” moms; any mom who needs an extra hand can benefit from keeping a good carrier handy.
“Three of my four kids always wanted to be held,” mom Anna told me. “Currently, it’s the twins and it’s constant. I can get a lot done with them strapped to my body and they love it. Win–win and total life saver for me!”
Finding a good carrier is important. Meghen Jones, chapter president of Babywearing International Kansas City, explained what moms should be looking for when they’re shopping:
“I usually tell new parents is that the best carrier for them is the one that fits their body, their baby, and their budget. You want a carrier that holds baby snug and close. ‘Close enough to kiss’ is a good rule to remember.”
Some of the most popular options are soft structure carriers created by Tula or Lenny Lamb, ring slings by a brand called Sakura Bloom, and budget-friendly options by Ergo Baby.

3. Your New Best Friend the Next Time Your Baby Has a Cold

No one really tells you that you’ll leave the hospital with your baby and a random assortment of baby paraphernalia, from newborn diapers to a thermometer and a feeding log. As much as I appreciated these little gifts, there was one product I hated using—the bulb syringe. Wrestling a screaming infant to suck snot out of their nose isn’t for the weak.
When my second baby arrived, a friend bought me the NoseFrida, and I never looked back. This snot sucker allows Mom or Dad to gently clear Baby’s nose so they can breathe easier without all of the drama.

4. The Nursing Cover That Does It All

Babies come with so much stuff. Even when you stick with the essentials, it’s easy to feel like a pack mule, lugging diapers, spare outfits, and nursing covers from place to place. So whether you’re registering for baby gear for the first time or looking for ways to cut back on what you already own, a three-in-one product is something you can’t ignore.
The Milk Snob Cover is the multifunctional baby gear of every mom’s dreams.
“It’s a nursing cover, car seat cover, and stroller cover. You used to need three different products for those things and now you just need one!” Mallory, mom of two, told me. “It washes so easily and takes up so little space in the diaper bag.”

5. A $3 Purchase That Will Cut Your Laundry Loads in Half

If life as a mom were broken down on a pie chart, laundry would undoubtedly get a monster slice of the pie. Anything that will shrink that mountain of dirty clothes hiding in your closet is an essential.
Enter the KLADDIG Bib from IKEA. It’s more than a bib, really. It’s a poncho that protects your toddler’s clothes from everything from spaghetti sauce to those inevitable stains that watermelon leaves behind.
“Full-sleeve bibs are my holy grail item,” mom of three Lauren told me. “Saves me from doing so much laundry.”

6. Ignore the judgey moms and buy this for your “runner.”

Before you write this underrated parenting product off as inhumane or cruel, think about what you would do to keep your favorite 2-year-old from darting off into busy traffic. The kiddie leash has long been a controversial parenting product, and it may not be for everyone, but the moms who need it swear it has prevented a major catastrophe more than once.
“I judged the crap out of parents [who] used those,” mom of one Samantha, mom of one, confessed. “And then I had a runner. At the zoo.”
For mom of two Amber, it was a close call that convinced her a kiddie leash was an essential addition to her parenting product stash.
“We used a monkey backpack leash for a runner after experiencing the panic of losing an 11-month-old at a plaza full of people. My heart stops [just] thinking about it!”
Now, we know what you think when you hear the word “leash,” but products like this darling buckle-on backpack or this plush friend with an attached leash will likely result in fewer stares.

7. It’s finally time to catch up on sleep.

Some babies just don’t sleep. If you’re a sleep-deprived mom with a very young baby at home, a swaddle could be the solution to your 3 a.m. woes.
“Swaddling, when used correctly, can be a tremendous way to promote safe sleeping,” Hindi Zeidman, creator of the Ollie Swaddle, told HealthyWay. “The safe sleep guidelines from the American [Academy] of Pediatrics are clear: Swaddling helps to keep babies on their back, which is the ideal sleep position to assist in preventing sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).”
In addition to safety, swaddling can also provide a better night’s sleep by improving colic and fussiness, increasing REM sleep, and preventing overstimulation.

8. The Diapering Product You Never Knew Was Missing From Your Life

Applying diaper rash cream is a necessary part of the everyday life of moms, but that doesn’t mean it has to be messy. The BabyBum Diaper Cream Spatula looks like it belongs in the kitchen, but its real place is in the diaper bag of every baby. Whether you’re applying paste on the go or just don’t want to deal with the mess, this diapering product is a can’t-miss addition to every baby registry.

9. A Simpler Approach to Expressing Breast Milk

Most working moms rely heavily on their electric breast pump to make it possible to breastfeed while working full time. For the part-time working mom or stay-at-home mom, an electric pump can be an unnecessary expense and a hassle to deal with.
A manual breast pump may seem like a return to the Stone Age of milk expression, but this parenting product is beyond underrated. The Lansinoh Manual Pump is inexpensive and low key, making it the perfect option for pumping on the road, pumping in the middle of the night to reduce engorgement, or quick expression on a date night. Medela’s Harmony Manual Pump is also incredibly popular among many moms.
“I always kept a manual in my car,” Jayne, mom of three, said. “There were so many parts involved with my electric for work and [without] fail I would always forget something I needed. Having a backup in the car was life saving for a working mom.”

10. Parenting is messy, but it doesn’t have to suck.

Okay, so a vacuum might not technically be a parenting product, but it is certainly a product parents can’t live without. And not just any vacuum will do.
“I love the lightweight cordless Shark vacuum,” mom of three Lacy told me. “My kids fight over who gets to vacuum now.”
If refereeing tiny housekeepers doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, Chaunie, mom of four, swears one product changed her mom life forever.
“Honestly, the Roomba. Maybe that’s not underrated enough, but I feel like it should be an essential with little kids. It’s absurd how much stress it’s taken from my life. I was vacuuming the floors after every meal and it made me crazy!”

11. It’s time for fewer midnight diaper changes.

There is nothing more frustrating than having to wake a soundly sleeping baby because they’re leaking through their diaper.
Betsy, mom of one, said diaper booster pads were the end of changing her son’s diaper multiple times each night. “He could make it through the night in one diaper with these, rather than getting him all woke up with a diaper change!”

12. This isn’t just for breastfeeding moms.

If you’ve ever breastfed a baby, you know lanolin is one of those lifesaving products you can’t do without. Don’t be so quick to throw this product out when your baby weans, though. Moms swear it has so many uses beyond healing nipples.
“It’s been almost 10 years since I had my first baby and we still use it for chapped noses and faces in the winter, rashes, burns, you name it,” Christi told me. “That stuff heals everything and it’s super safe to use around the mouth, not to mention it’s colorless, odorless, and flavorless.”
A quote that’s often attributed to Confucius says, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” I’m not sure he had building a baby registry in mind, but every new parent could benefit from taking this wise advice to heart before they make their next visit to Babies “R” Us.
