Are The Benefits Of Ashwagandha Real? Here’s What We Learned

Also known as winter cherry and Indian ginseng, ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has recently gained a lot of popularity. There are a number of scientifically-proven benefits of ashwagandha—and the time-tested remedy could potentially have dozens of uses.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen, which is a type of herb that helps one’s body adapt to stress. According to Erin Stokes, ND and Medical Director at MegaFood, adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in the traditional Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda. “Ayurveda, a Sanskrit word, literally means the ‘science of life’,” Stokes says.The highly developed traditional system of medicine is centered around establishing balance in different systems of the body.”
While ashwagandha isn’t new, it’s becoming increasingly popular in wellness communities. Ashwagandha isn’t the only kind of adaptogen that exists, but it’s one of the most widely-used and well-researched of all, Stokes says. The root, leaf, and fruit of the plant are used for medicine.
Adaptogens reportedly work by targeting our cortisol levels. When we’re stressed, our bodies go into fight-or-flight mode, which increases the production of a stress hormone called cortisol. It’s normal and healthy to experience stress once in a while, but chronic stress leads to chronically high levels of cortisol. This has a damaging effect on our physical and mental health.
Because stress can affect the entire body, it follows logically that an herb that regulates our stress levels can have a broad range of positive health benefits.

What are the health benefits of ashwagandha?

“Ashwagandha is one of the most versatile of the adaptogenic botanicals because it is uniquely suited to benefit many people,” Stokes explains. “Plants each have their unique qualities, just like the people who take them.”
Alissia Zenhausern, NMD, a naturopathic physician at NMD Wellness of Scottsdale, says that ashwagandha is one of her favorite herbs because of its numerous benefits. “As ashwagandha is one of the most researched herbs, it definitely has a lot of research supporting its benefits, and clinically I have definitely seen its power,” she says.
Here are a few of the possible health benefits of ashwagandha.

Anxiety and Stress

As mentioned earlier, ashwagandha is primarily considered an adaptogen—meaning it helps the body adapt to cope with stress and anxiety. One study suggests that the anti-anxiety effects of ashwagandha are comparable to that of lorazepam (Ativan), a common prescription anti-anxiety medication. This same study also found that ashwagandha may have antidepressant effects, too.
Further studies done in 2000, 2009, and 2012 all suggest ashwagandha can reduce anxiety in people with anxiety disorders.
Zenhausern notes that although ashwagandha is great for stress, it’s more appropriate for treating long-term or chronic stress. “The reason this herb is not good for short-term stress is because it takes at least one to two months of continual use to notice improvement in stress management and anxiety. Although long, this is totally worth the wait,” she says.

Sleep

Since ashwagandha can be such a powerful anti-anxiety herb, it makes sense that it can also improve your sleep quality—especially if anxiety is keeping you from getting some shut-eye.
“Ashwagandha can also help promote restful sleep when taken over time,” Stokes says. “In fact, the genus name somnifera—Withania somnifera—means ‘sleep inducer’ in Latin.” Indeed, studies have shown that regularly taking ashwagandha can improve sleep quality, since an active component of ashwagandha can induce sleep.

Cancer

Ashwagandha has potential cancer-fighting effects, but more studies are needed to confirm this. Multiple trials done on animals suggest ashwagandha can help fight cancer—specifically, it has been shown to reduce the spread of lung, breast, ovarian and colon cancer—by causing adaptosis, the death of cancer cells, and by preventing the spread of cancer to new cells.
Unfortunately, there aren’t enough human trials to confirm whether ashwagandha could have a cancer-fighting effect in humans, too. Hopefully, future studies will help us harness the anti-tumor properties of this incredible herb.
Some trials, though, have suggested that ashwagandha can improve the quality of life of cancer patients, specifically through reducing chemotherapy-induced fatigue.

Improving Muscle Mass

Ashwagandha is Sanskrit for “strength of the stallion,” Zenhausern says, and it’s traditionally been used to improve one’s strength.
A few studies have suggested that the herb does indeed improve one’s ability to gain muscle. One study indicated that ashwagandha can significantly improve one’s physical performance and endurance during physical activity.

Immune Function and Inflammation

Inflammation is an immune response that helps the body protect itself from “attacks” such as infections, sores, and some bacteria. In itself, inflammation is not always a bad thing.
For those who have autoimmune disorders, however, inflammation often gets a little out-of-hand. The science suggests that ashwagandha has anti-inflammatory properties and supports the immune system. Zenhausern notes that, in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha was often given to people recovering from illness to support their immune system.
Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, ashwagandha could be a potentially useful treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder.

Libido and Fertility

“The herb has even been shown to help with low libido and infertility in both males and females,” Zenhausern says. Indeed, human studies have shown that ashwagandha increases testosterone levels and sperm quality in men.
A 2009 study showed that ashwagandha can improve the semen quality in stress-related male infertility. In this study, the subjects underwent treatment for three months where they were given a high dose of ashwagandha every day. After this three-month treatment, 14 percent of the subjects’ partners became pregnant.
That said, the reproductive effects of ashwagandha aren’t totally understood, as it surprisingly had spermicidal effects in some animal models.

Brain Function

Ashwagandha is considered a rejuvenating plant, and it’s believed to help improve cognitive function. It’s one of the Ayurvedic medicines that have traditionally been used to prevent dementia and improve memory. A few studies have suggested that ashwagandha can improve brain function and memory.
Additionally, ashwagandha might prevent or reduce the acceleration of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
Although the plant is well-studied, further studies are needed before we understand all the benefits of ashwagandha. If you’re curious about whether ashwagandha can help you specifically, it’s best to speak to a trained healthcare professional who has knowledge of Ayurveda.

How does one use ashwagandha properly?

Ashwagandha is available in a range of different forms, including teas, powders, capsules, and tablets, Stokes notes.
Zenhausern highly recommends taking the root powder form of ashwagandha, but make sure you’re buying it from a reputable source.
It is important to make sure the supplement is standardized for human consumption,” she says. The active part of the herb is called the withanolides, and Zenhausern recommends ensuring the withanolides content in the ashwagandha is in the range of 1 to 10 percent before buying it. Only buy ashwagandha if the supplier clearly marks the withanolides content, she advises. “The reason it is important to make sure the withanolide content is between 1 to 10 percent is because the higher the withanolide content, the stronger the supplement’s effect will be,” Zenhausern explains. Thus, the withanolides content will determine the dosage of ashwagandha.
Ashwagandha powder does not taste great, unfortunately. While you can mix it up with a little water and drink it, it has a very unpleasant, chalky taste. An alternative is to add ashwagandha powder to a smoothie so that the other ingredients mask the taste.
As always, it’s best to check in with a healthcare practitioner before using any herb or supplement. Not only can they ensure its safety, but they can also advise you on what dosage to take. “Always consult with your doctor before starting a new supplement,” Zenhausern advises. “The typical dose I recommend starting with is 300 to 500 mg of ashwagandha per day. You can slowly increase for a max dose of 1,500 mg per day.”
Of course, the ideal dosage of ashwagandha will vary from person to person, depending on your personal biology and the health benefit you hope to gain from taking the supplement.

There are many benefits of ashwagandha, but is it safe to use? Who should steer clear of it?

Studies have shown that ashwagandha is safe to consume, but both Stokes and Zenhausern agree that it shouldn’t be taken by children or pregnant people.
“Ashwagandha should never be used in pregnancy, as it contains abortive properties that can lead to miscarriage,” Zenhausern explains.
There aren’t enough studies to show definitely if ashwagandha is safe for children to consume, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid giving the herb to kids.

Ashwagandha might interact with other medication, so it’s important to be cautious if you’re on certain medications. WebMD notes that ashwagandha might interact with immunosuppressants, sedatives like benzodiazepine and central nervous system depressants, and thyroid medication. If you’re concerned about this, speak directly to a healthcare practitioner.
As mentioned earlier, it’s important to get your ashwagandha from a reputable source. Although ashwagandha itself isn’t inherently harmful to adults, it’s important to remember that the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements the same way prescription medications are regulated.
In 2008, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health funded a study that involved testing Ayurvedic supplements. Out of the 193 supplements examined, 21 percent contained toxic substances like lead, mercury, and arsenic.
This is why it’s important to check in with your healthcare practitioner whenever you use a supplement, even if it’s herbal and relatively safe, like ashwagandha. The best way to enjoy the benefits of ashwagandha is under the advice of a trained professional who can help you determine the best dosage and source of the herb.

What Types Of Therapy Are Out There? How To Find The Best Fit For You

Going to therapy can be tough.
That’s an understatement. There’s a great deal of stigma surrounding therapy and mental health issues, accessing a therapist can be expensive, and sometimes your therapist doesn’t really gel with you.
Not to mention that it’s often difficult to talk about your experiences, thoughts, and fears.
I’ve seen therapists off and on from the age of 13. My first therapist was more harmful than helpful, and she barely helped me with my post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms at all. I was afraid of approaching a second therapist because my first experience was so unhelpful.
I’m glad that I eventually tried therapy again, because my second experience helped me a great deal. My new therapist used two kinds of therapy—cognitive behavioral and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)—which meant her approach was totally different from the first therapist. This approach helped me a great deal.

It’s important to realize that different therapists will have different approaches to therapy. In part, this is because they each have their own areas of interest and expertise. It’s also because there are a number of types of therapy out there. Many psychotherapists are trained in more than one kind of therapy, and some may use a blend of different methods to treat you. Some types of therapy might work for you, and others won’t. It’s a matter of finding something that suits you.
If you discover that one type of therapy doesn’t seem to be helping you, don’t be put off therapy altogether. Consider seeing another therapist or pursuing another kind of therapy; it might just pleasantly surprise you.

What types of therapy are there?

There are numerous types of therapy, and while we can’t cover them all here, we can discuss some of the most common types of therapy.

Client-Centered Therapy (CCT)

Also known as person-centered therapy, client-centered therapy is a widely used form of therapy that was first conceptualized in the 1940s. The idea behind CCT is to constantly remember that the client is a person and that we have the power to heal ourselves—we just need a little support. The therapy focuses on the client; the therapist is there primarily to listen and empathize. While the therapist can give a little guidance, they encourage the client to make their own decisions and work through their own feelings.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Another fairly common type of therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on changing your thought patterns to help you develop healthier patterns of behavior.
Cognitive behavioral therapy revolves around the principle that our feelings result from our thoughts and that therefore the best way to improve how you feel is to work on changing your thoughts,” says Raffi Bilek. Bilek is a licensed clinical social work counselor and director of the Baltimore Therapy Center, as well as the director of the Montgomery County Abuse Intervention Program in Maryland. “This kind of therapy is usually practical, concrete, and directed.”
Olivia Djouadi, a licensed psychotherapist and counselor, often uses the image of a triangle to help her clients navigate certain experiences. The three points of the triangle represent thoughts, feelings, and behavior, all of which she examines when helping a client work through an experience.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) includes helping the client change their behavior by developing new skills. These skills could include mindfulness, positive social skills, regulating your emotions, and tolerating distressing situations.
If you’re prone to self-destructive behavior, or if you struggle with regulating your emotions, this could be a great form of therapy for you. Although DBT was originally used to treat people with borderline personality disorder, substance abuse issues, and/or suicidal thoughts, it’s also effective for a range of other mental health issues. Studies suggest that DBT can be helpful in eating disorder treatment, particularly for binge-eating disorder and bulimia.

Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

According to the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), this type of therapy is helpful in processing trauma. If the memory of a trauma is greatly upsetting to you, EMDR can help you process the experience. This form of therapy can also be used to treat a range of other mood and personality disorders.
An EMDR session might seem different from most types of talk therapy. In my case, my therapist would tap one knee and then the other while I had to imagine and recall the details of traumatic experiences. While this was hard, it ultimately helped.
EMDRIA notes that the movement of the eyes during EMDR is like what happens when we dream. Our eyes move back and forth, which is why the dreaming phase of sleeping is called rapid eye movement or REM. We know that dreaming is important for storing and processing information, and it is thought that EMDR elicits a similar process.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) can blend mindfulness practices with CBT. “Mindfulness broadly refers to the practice of being aware of your feelings, thoughts, and sensations in the present moment,” Bilek says. “This kind of therapy is aimed at helping you develop the skill of mindfulness, which can help you gain more control over your experience and thereby better achieve your goals.” Mindfulness-based therapy can also include using meditation and breathing exercises as tools.
“It slows down the thinking patterns and can help people focus on the situation they have been through and start to accept what has happened,” Djouadi says. “Before discussing any trauma, I connect a client with a safe object, which may be a good memory or their phone. Some clients might not have ever had a safe feeling so I slowly introduce what one may be,” she explains. This exercise helps to ground them and help them feel safe.
Studies have found that mindfulness-based therapy is effective in treating depression as well as bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders.

Play Therapy

Talking about your feelings and past experiences isn’t always easy, so expressive forms of therapy like play therapy can be useful. Djouadi says that play therapy, while often used with children, can also be used to treat adults. “I use play therapy when clients struggle with dissociation, as it begins to heal the developmental areas that were affected by early trauma,” she says.

Which type of therapy is right for me?

As you can see, there are so many types of therapy out there that it can be hard to choose one. The important thing to remember is that there are many different approaches to therapy, and you can seek another therapist or a different kind of therapy if one doesn’t work for you.

The type of therapy that’s used to treat you will depend on your own needs; particular types of therapy are more suited to certain types of mental illnesses or emotional struggles.
“Research seems to indicate that the best therapy to go with is the one that resonates with you the most,” Bilek says. “Studies have shown that all therapeutic modalities are more or less equally effective, so long a there is a plausible theory behind it. This means that if you really like the idea of CBT, then that will work well for you, and if mindfulness is your thing, that can work well for you too,” he says. Experimenting with different types of therapy could be helpful.
You should always ensure that your therapist has a license to practice therapy. If you’re looking for a therapist who practices a specific type of therapy, ask what types of therapy they practice and what their relevant training is.
Bilek points out that it’s more crucial to make sure that you’re comfortable with your therapist than to look for a specific kind of therapy. “Far more important than the kind of therapy is the relationship you have with the therapist. So your best bet is to pick a therapist, meet with them, and see how you like them. If you don’t, try someone else,” he says. “You shouldn’t shop around forever between all the therapists in town, but you should feel free to try a couple until you find one you feel comfortable with.”

Psoriasis Treatments: A Guide To Natural And Mainstream Options

Something that looks like a rash might not seem like cause for alarm, but psoriasis is a chronic disease that needs to be diagnosed by a medical professional. Although there is currently no cure for psoriasis, there are a number of conventional and at-home psoriasis treatments out there that can make living with the disease a little easier.
Psoriasis is a genetic, autoimmune, inflammatory condition, in which your skin cells divide too quickly and do not shed quickly enough, creating inflamed, itchy, thick, white, scaly plaques, most classically on the scalp, elbows, and knees,” says Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and a clinical instructor at the University of Southern California.
Psoriasis is a chronic disease, and while it can’t be cured, it can be managed. “Psoriasis is a lifelong disease that can wax and wane but usually does not resolve completely or forever,” says Shainhouse. “Many of our newer medications are able to achieve a 90 to 100 percent skin clearance while [the person is] on the medication, but it is not a cure.”
Fortunately, thanks to a number of psoriasis treatments, the symptoms can be managed. Here’s what you need to know about treating psoriasis.

What causes psoriasis?

“The causes of psoriasis are not completely understood, but it is thought to be an autoimmune disease, which means that your body’s defense—your immune system—is overactive and actually working against itself,” says Jeanette Jacknin MD, a holistic dermatologist specializing in topical cannabinoids for skin disorders. “One-third of psoriasis patients have a family history of the disease, so there also appears to be a genetic component for the disease.”
Even if you are genetically predisposed to carry psoriasis, you might or might not get it. There are often certain factors trigger the psoriasis, Shainhouse says. These triggers might cause the first outbreak or aggravate the existing symptoms of your psoriasis.
Stress is another potential trigger, according to the scientific research. Jacknin mentions that severe stress often precedes the first emergence of psoriasis and 70 percent of flare-ups.
Other potential triggers include skin infections and injuries to the skin, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. Even a small pinprick can trigger or aggravate psoriasis, a reaction called the Koebner phenomenon. The Koebner phenomenon could also trigger psoriatic arthritis (more on that later).
In addition to having a number of triggers, there are a number of different types of psoriasis, categorized by where and how they appear on the body.

Types of Psoriasis

Guttate Psoriasis

Guttate psoriasis is characterized by a “sudden eruption of small, pink, scaly spots all over the trunk,” Shainhouse says, adding that the “trigger” for guttate psoriasis is often strep throat: “for some reason, the body recognizes strep antigen as psoriasis and turns it on.”

Plaque Psoriasis

Also known as psoriasis vulgaris, plaque psoriasis is the most common type, accounting for 80 percent to 90 percent of psoriasis cases. The American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD) notes that plaque psoriasis is accompanied by a scaly, silver, thin layer covering the skin and a thick buildup of plaque, usually on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.

Inverse Psoriasis

Most commonly found in the underarms or groin, Shainhouse says, inverse psoriasis occurs where hair touches skin. Skin will appear raw and it will feel swollen and sensitive.

Pustular Psoriasis

Commonly appearing on the hands and feet, pustular psoriasis includes the development of pus-filled bumps accompanied by red, swollen skin, according to the AAD. This type of psoriasis can be extremely painful.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis

A rare but serious and life-threatening form of psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis involves large patches of red, raw-looking skin covering the body. This is accompanied by chills, a fever, and flu-like symptoms. This is usually developed by people who have another kind of psoriasis.

Generalized Pustular Psoriasis

When pus-filled bumps and scales appear all over the body and not just on the hands and feet, it could be generalized pustular psoriasis. Again, this is a rare but life-threatening form of psoriasis. It’s often accompanied by flu-like symptoms.

Nail Psoriasis

Nail psoriasis is frequently accompanied by discoloration of the nails, tiny dents or pits in your nails, and blood or build-up in the nail bed, according to the AAD. The nails might come away from the skin.

Conventional Psoriasis Treatments

If you have psoriasis, it’s most likely plaque psoriasis, which is manageable. But it’s important to keep an eye out for any symptoms of the more serious forms of psoriasis described above. The psoriasis treatments prescribed by your healthcare provider will depend on the type of psoriasis you’re experiencing.

If you have a flaky, itchy rash that doesn’t go away, contact a medical professional, says. “You should see a dermatologist to discuss treatment options and long-term management,” she advises. “Once you understand your skin disease and know which treatments work for you, you can treat flares at home as needed and see your dermatologist when you need help.”
Depending on the severity of your skin and whether or not you have systemic symptoms, including psoriatic arthritis, your doctor will prescribe topical treatments or even oral or injectable medications,” Shainhouse explains.
Shainhouse says that there are a number of topical psoriasis treatments. You might be prescribed a vitamin D analogue topical cream, which slows down the production of new skin cells so that a thick scale won’t build up on your skin. Another option is a topical steroid or a topical tar, which helps to calm the inflammation, redness, and itch. A retinoid might also be prescribed; this helps to normalize cell division so that old cells can shed instead of building up.
Oral medications are usually prescribed for moderate to severe cases of psoriasis. “Oral medications reduce inflammation, reduce the immune response, and/or regulate skin cell production,” Shainhouse notes.
In the last decade, biologics (injectable medications) have become a popular psoriasis treatment. “A biologic is a protein-based drug that blocks the action of a specific type of immune cell (called a T cell) or blocks proteins in the immune system,” Jacknin says. “Patients on biologics have to be monitored closely for side effects.”
Keep in mind that the psoriasis treatment that is prescribed for you depends on the nature and severity of your symptoms and that it’s best to see a dermatologist about psoriasis to receive the necessary medication. With that being said, certain natural or at-home remedies can help with your psoriasis treatment.

Natural Psoriasis Treatments and Lifestyle Changes

Get a little sun.

Soaking up the sun—in moderation—might help with your psoriasis symptoms. “UV light is generally a no-no in dermatology, since we know that too much can be associated with the development of skin cancer and melanoma,” Shainhouse says. “However, it has an anti-inflammatory effect in psoriatic skin and is a very useful option for reducing skin disease/symptoms.”

Keep your skin from drying out.

Dry skin can aggravate the symptoms and discomfort associated with psoriasis. You can prevent dry skin by staying hydrated, avoiding very hot showers or baths, and using an air humidifier. Dry air dries your skin out, and an air humidifier helps to counter that issue.
Moisturizing regularly is also important—just ensure that your moisturizer is free of fragrance, as fragrance might irritate the skin more. Many people swear by using moisturizers containing Oregon grape for psoriasis. Also known as mahonia aquifolium, Oregon grape has been proven to be an effective and helpful moisturizer for people with psoriasis.
Another great moisturizing agent is aloe vera, Jacknin says. “Research shows aloe vera can help reduce the redness and scaling of psoriasis,” she says. Moisturizers containing 0.5 percent aloe are your best bet.

Soak in a tub.

Although psoriasis is itchy, scratching is a bad idea, as it can exacerbate the problem. “Rubbing and picking at the skin will actually worsen the spots,” Shainhouse says. “Psoriasis tends to develop in sites of skin trauma, including cuts and scratches.”
Instead, you’ll want to relieve the itchiness in another way. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends a number of natural treatments for itchiness. This includes soaking in the tub with a natural remedy such as oats. If you’re not keen on letting the oats float in your bathwater, put some in a clean sock or a small sachet, tie it closed, and let it soak in your bath.
A bath with Dead Sea salts or Epsom salts might also help relieve itchy skin, Jacknin says. It’s best to moisturize just after getting out of the tub to avoid drying your skin out, she adds.
Rinsing with apple cider vinegar can help reduce itchiness on your scalp, but avoid it if you have any open wounds.

Invest in CBD oil.

Plants related to the cannabis genus—including hemp and what we refer to as cannabis—contain cannabinoids, which have a range of health benefits. “Recent studies have suggested that cannabinoids may treat psoriasis by interfering in many of the inflammatory and immune pathways that exacerbate or trigger psoriasis,” Jacknin notes. She points to research that suggests cannabinoids may slow the development of skin cells called keratinocytes, which lead to psoriasis symptoms.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a type of cannabinoid, is particularly helpful for people with psoriasis, Jacknin says. This is because it has anti-inflammatory properties. “Based on the research, I believe that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can dramatically improve symptoms for many patients with psoriasis,” Jacknin says.
CBD comes in the form of ingestible oils and tinctures, which can be consumed orally, or in topical treatments. Hemp-derived CBD is legal throughout the United States. Jacknin suggests using third party–tested CBD oil derived from U.S.-grown hemp, such as MedTerra CBD oil.

Avoid alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

Research shows that drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes can aggravate psoriasis symptoms, so it’s best to avoid both alcohol and cigarettes.

Eat anti-inflammatory foods.

Certain foods have anti-inflammatory properties, and stocking up on these anti-inflammatory foods can help treat psoriasis. Anti-inflammatory foods include kale, ginger, sardines, and beets. Jacknin strongly recommends integrating turmeric into your diet: Eat it in your food or have some in pill form.
Some people have an inflammatory reaction to dairy, so consider avoiding dairy products and monitor whether your symptoms improve.
Remember that these remedies and lifestyle changes should complement your prescribed psoriasis treatment, not replace it. In other words, while there are measures you can take at home to reduce your psoriasis symptoms, it should primarily be treated by a healthcare professional.

Diseases Related to Psoriasis

Psoriasis is more than just skin deep—which is why you need to see a healthcare professional if you suspect you have it. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis are at risk for developing psoriatic arthritis, a kind of inflammatory arthritis that could cause permanent joint damage if left untreated for too long. If you have psoriasis, be on the lookout for sore, stiff, and swollen joints, as this symptom could be caused by psoriatic arthritis.
After being diagnosed with psoriasis by a dermatologist, you might have to be tested for these related diseases. Shainhouse says that a rheumatologist could address issues with psoriatic arthritis. “There should be communication and joint patient care with the primary care practitioner, because there are medical conditions that must be screened for and monitored in patients with psoriasis,” she adds.
If you have psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, you’re at greater risk for certain diseases. Studies have suggested that people with psoriasis are more likely to develop cancer, cardiovascular diseases, depression and anxiety, metabolic syndrome, liver disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, among other conditions. The reason that psoriasis is linked to those diseases isn’t fully understood, although it’s thought to be because of the chronic inflammation and compromised immune system associated with autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis.
Living with psoriasis isn’t easy, but a combination of the right medication and positive lifestyle changes can greatly improve the symptoms. Consult a dermatologist before pursuing any home remedies or natural psoriasis treatments, as psoriasis could be indicative of another serious disease or medical condition.

What Is Impostor Syndrome, And How Can I Overcome It?

Have you ever looked at your achievements and felt like you don’t really deserve them? Have you received an amazing award but felt like you got it based on luck, not merit? Do you worry that one day, everyone will realize you’re not as talented or smart as you seem?
You’re not alone. “Impostor syndrome,” as it’s known, is surprisingly common, especially among talented and high-achieving individuals. Also known as the imposter phenomenon, impostorism, or fraud syndrome, impostor syndrome involves feeling like a fraud who doesn’t really deserve their achievements.
Feeling like a fraud can weigh on your mental health and work performance. You might constantly feel anxious because you’re afraid of others “discovering” that you’re not truly talented, or you may feel the need to overwork yourself to prove your worth.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Impostor syndrome can be overcome.
If you think you’re experiencing impostor syndrome, here’s what you can do about it.

What is impostor syndrome?

The concept of the impostor phenomenon was first explored by psychologists Pauline R. Clance and Suzanne A. Imes in 1978. They described it as “an internal experience of intellectual phoniness that appears to be particularly prevalent and intense among a select sample of high achieving women.” Since then, the term has been applied to more than just women.
Impostor syndrome isn’t classified as a mental illness, and it doesn’t appear in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is the guidebook used to diagnose mental illnesses. That said, impostor syndrome can exacerbate disorders like anxiety and depression.
If left unchecked, imposter syndrome can be an insidious thought pattern that can lead to increased stress, anxiety, burnout, and even depression,” says Desiree Wiercyski, a life coach for ambitious and career-focused women. Wiercyski runs a self-guided course on working through impostor syndrome.
“When you have consistent negative thoughts cycling through your mind, it’s very likely that they can trigger other negative feelings and emotions, which can lead to an overall lower quality of life,” Wiercyski says, adding that impostor syndrome can negatively impact your work performance, turning those “can’t-do” thoughts into a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy.
Impostor syndrome can be accompanied by feelings of inadequacy and poor self-esteem as well as feeling overly modest about one’s achievements and accomplishments, says Robyn McKay, PhD, a psychologist and career advisor. McKay co-authored the book Smart Girls in the 21st Century: Understanding Talented Girls and Women.

Who experiences impostor syndrome?

Anyone can experience impostor syndrome, but Wiercyski says she finds impostor syndrome to be more prevalent in women and minorities. “When you go through life with any sort of minority status, you’re in a sense being constantly told that there are pieces of you that don’t fit in with the culture, that you’re not living up to pre-conceived standards,” she says. “If you’re constantly told to change, to bend and shift to adapt to expectations, then standing up in a situation where you are the expert, where you do need confidence, is so much more difficult.”
A 2017 study suggests there’s a link between discrimination and impostor syndrome in racial minority groups. In a New York Times article, Kevin Cokley, who co-authored the study, explained the correlation between imposter syndrome and discrimination. “Feeling like an impostor can exacerbate the impact of discrimination,” he said in the Times article. “This is what we found with African-American students in our study. I suspect that discrimination can also exacerbate the impact of impostorism.”
Even the most high-achieving, talented people experience it. “I work with women in tech and medicine primarily—and even those at the highest levels of leadership and influence report feeling at times like they’re going to get ‘found out’ as less intelligent or capable than what they’ve led their colleagues to believe,” says McKay.
Weircyski notes that impostor syndrome can be isolating, but it’s important to remember that if you’re experiencing these feelings, you’re not alone. Nobody wants to talk about the feelings associated with imposter syndrome because they fear being “found out,” and although there are few solid statistics on the number of people who experience impostor syndrome, both experts agree that it’s very common.

Do I have impostor syndrome?

As mentioned before, impostor syndrome isn’t believed to be a psychiatric disorder, so there are no strict criteria for diagnosis. However, Clance, one of the psychologists who coined the term “impostor phenomenon,” does have a self-guided test you can take if you believe you’re experiencing imposter syndrome.
People who have impostor syndrome might engage in the following:

Downplaying Achievements

“They may be overly modest about their accomplishments, and even unwilling to advocate for their career advancement because they don’t want it to seem like they’re bragging,” says McKay. When praised, they might respond by saying “I just got lucky!” or “Anyone can do it.”

Always Needing to Know More

People with impostor syndrome constantly feel doubtful of their knowledge. They might over-research something even if they’re very knowledgeable on the topic. “This isn’t a matter of faking it until you make it; folks who experience this have objective knowledge and expertise in a topic but will turn down opportunities to share their knowledge,” Wiercyski says.

Insisting on Working Alone and Micromanaging

Wiercyski says that people who have impostor syndrome often feel like they have to do all the work, not because they think they’re the only one competent enough to do it, but because they’re afraid other workers will realize they’re a fraud if they see how they work. As such, they might be afraid to share their work or delegate to others.

Perfectionism

People with impostor syndrome often want their work to be perfect before showing others. “This is because they feel like if it’s not perfect, then they’ll lose credibility or respect,” Wiercyski says. “Often, perfectionism can be one of the biggest things that fuels imposter syndrome. Either the perfectionist takes too long to get something done [or] it doesn’t happen, and that reinforces the idea that they’re a fake.”

Volunteering

They might take on too many responsibilities to prove their worth, or they might volunteer for jobs below their pay-grade, says McKay.

Being Excessively Shy in Meetings

“They may not speak up in meetings and may have difficulty finding places to add value to a project,” McKay says. They might believe they have no ideas or innovations and wonder why they were chosen for the team when others confidently contribute, McKay adds. “They might not sit at the table in meetings, but instead take a seat against the wall.”

How can I overcome impostor syndrome?

If you’re experiencing impostor syndrome, you can overcome it by working on the following:

Acknowledge the thoughts and understand where they’re coming from.

It’s impossible to shift and reframe thoughts if you don’t have a crystal clear idea of what’s causing the thoughts and feelings,” says Wiercyski. Ask yourself where the feelings are coming from: What makes you believe you’re inadequate? Once you realize there’s no definite proof that you’re a fraud, and you see a lot of evidence to the contrary, it’s easier to remind yourself that you deserve your achievements.

Get a clear handle on your mission, vision, and purpose.

If you are unclear on your purpose, it’s easy to slip into the impostor syndrome,” McKay says. Remind yourself of where your passions and talents lie. When you’re fueled by your own purpose, that motivation might shake you out of the self-sabotaging habits associated with impostorism.

Keep a journal of your achievements.

Write out every single accomplishment, training, and qualification you have as well as the praise you’ve received on big projects. “When you spend time focused on your accomplishments, you start to feel the same way you felt when you achieved those things,” Wiercyski says. “This will help provide objective evidence of your capabilities and also help you feel more confident.”

Talk about it.

When you realize you’re not feeling alone in your impostorism—and that many other people experience it—you’ll realize those negative thoughts don’t mean you’re actually ill-accomplished. We can’t all be frauds, can we? Wiercyski suggests talking to others about it like therapists, support groups, and friends. “Not only will you get the support you need and assistance from others in gaining perspective, you’ll also likely find that you’re not alone in experiencing those feelings,” she says.

Reframe the thoughts.

When negative thoughts come up, counter them with the evidence of your achievements, Wiercyski says. “For example, if you got a new job and the thought ‘I have no idea what I’m doing’ pops into your head, you can reframe and say, ‘They hired me based on my experience and knowledge, I have the key things I need to be successful.’”
Impostor syndrome is a common experience that can contribute to mental strain, but fortunately, it can be overcome with a little self-love and a lot of positivity.

Menstrual Cup 101: All Of Your Awkward Questions—Answered

A mere decade ago, most people thought they only had two options when it came to menstrual hygiene: disposable pads or tampons. It was hard to imagine another way to capture and dispose of period blood.
Over the past few years, another period product has become very popular: menstrual cups. But what are menstrual cups? Why do people prefer them to pads and tampons? And how exactly do you use a menstrual cup?
HealthyWay spoke to some experts to find out all you need to know about using menstrual cups.

What is a menstrual cup?

Made from medical-grade silicone, a menstrual cup is placed inside the vagina to collect period blood. The user can empty the cup and give it a wash every few hours, reusing it every month for years.
What makes menstrual cups different to traditional tampons and pads is that it’s reusable. “In the U.S. alone, 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons are thrown into our waterways and landfills every year,” says Amanda Wilson, the founder of VOXAPOD, a menstrual cup. The average menstruating person has periods for 38 years. That means they’ll dispose of roughly 12,000 used disposables in their lifetime, which is a huge environmental concern, Wilson adds.
Because you can reuse the same menstrual cup for roughly three to five years, depending on the brand, you cut down on waste significantly. Menstrual cups are particularly popular among the zero-waste community—that is, those who try to reuse and recycle all their waste.
People prefer menstrual cups for reasons other than eco-friendliness, too. For one, they save you money in the long-run. The first menstrual cup I had was around $25, which was roughly the same amount of money I spent on tampons and pads for a four-month period. My menstrual cup lasted five years, which means I saved a great deal of money.
Many of us have heard of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which is often caused by tampons. With menstrual cups, you’re less likely to get TSS if you keep your cup clean, says OB-GYN Carolyn DeLucia, MD. “The risk for TSS is extremely minimal with menstrual cups. The one or two reported cases were due to wearing the menstrual cup for over 24 hours,” Wilson says.
However, there is something that puts many people off using menstrual cups: They don’t know how to use them or how to keep them clean.

How to Use a Menstrual Cup

If it’s your first time using a menstrual cup, you might feel a little intimidated. I know I was. When I saw the size of the menstrual cup, I didn’t quite know how it would fit.
The key is to fold the cup when you put it into your vagina. Once it’s inside, the cup will unfold and fit to your vagina, where it will sit and collect the blood.
Here’s the easiest way to insert a menstrual cup:

  1. Relax. As with inserting tampons, it’s easier when your vaginal muscles aren’t too tense!
  2. Wash your hands and the cup thoroughly.
  3. This is optional, but you might want to wet the cup or add some water-based lubricant to make it easier.
  4. Fold the cup so that it’s easy to insert. There are a number of different ways to do this, Wilson says. She recommends the following methods:
    C-Fold: Flatten the menstrual cup and bring the two folded ends together to form a C shape, rolling it to the size of a tampon.
    Punch Down Fold: Push one side of the lip of the cup into the center of the cup, folding in sides.
    7 Fold: Flatten the cup and fold one corner diagonally toward the center of the cup.

  5. Insert it. You might find it easiest to insert it while standing with one leg up on a stool or step, as you would insert a tampon, DeLucia says. When you insert it, push it toward your back. “You want to make sure the cup sits above the pubic bone, not up against the cervix,” explains Cathy Chapman, the President of Lunette North America. The cup should be inside the vagina, and the base should not be exposed.
  6. Once it’s in your vagina, you might want to wiggle the cup around a little until it feels more comfortable. You might dislike the feeling of the “stem” that most menstrual cups have. The stem is meant to help you grip the cup, but if it’s uncomfortable, you can always snip it with scissors to make it shorter.

While wearing a menstrual cup, you can bathe, exercise, and swim. It can also be used if you have an IUD. “It does not interfere with the IUD. You just need to be careful not to catch the IUD string with the cup when you pull it out,” notes DeLucia.
Chapman says that having penetrative sex while wearing a menstrual cup isn’t advisable. “It could dislodge the suction, and then you would have a menstrual mess on your hands,” she says. “But feel free to enjoy all the oral sex you want!”
Once you’ve worn the cup for a few hours, you might want to remove it. “Your menstrual cup should be emptied every 2 to 12 hours depending on your menstrual flow,” Wilson says. If you have a heavy flow and the cup is left in for quite some time, it might overflow and leak slightly. If your flow isn’t too heavy, it can be worn overnight.
Here are the steps for removal:

  1. Again, wash your hands thoroughly, and relax.
  2. You might want to stand with your leg on a stool or chair again, or you might want to sit on the toilet. Bear in mind that you might spill some blood as you remove the cup, so don’t stand over a bath mat (take it from someone who made this mistake!).
  3. Grip the base of the menstrual cup tightly and release the suction of the cup. “You can do this by slightly bearing down and then pinch the bottom of the menstrual cup to release the suction,” Chapman says. “You may need to slightly rock your cup back forth if you’ve got some really good suction going on.”
  4. Pull the cup out slowly.
  5. Empty the contents and clean the cup.

Does your cup feel stuck? Don’t panic. “Sometimes the cup can form a pretty strong suction to the vaginal wall,” DeLucia says. “The best way to deal with this is to use your finger to break the suction. Once that is accomplished, it should not be a problem to remove it,” she explains. If that doesn’t work, you can pinch the cup a little higher up and give it a gentle twist.

How to Keep Your Menstrual Cup Clean

Keeping your menstrual cup clean is essential, especially since you’ll probably want to use it for many years.
After removing it and emptying the contents, you’ll want to wash the menstrual cup with water and a little non-antibacterial soap. The DivaCup website lists cleansers that should never be used to clean a menstrual cup including antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, and dish soap.
Make sure you rinse your cup thoroughly after washing, as putting a soapy cup in your vagina can cause an infection. Personally, I use boiling water and soap to clean the cup in between each insertion.
When your period is over, boil your menstrual cup for about twenty minutes, says Chapman. Dry it off and store it in a clean, dry place. I keep mine in a cotton drawstring bag in between cycles.
If you’re in public, cleaning a menstrual cup might be tricky. Consider bringing a water bottle into the stall with you and using water and toilet paper to clean it off. Many companies, including Lunette, make wipes and washes specifically for menstrual cups. This can be helpful in keeping the cup clean when you’re in a public setting.
Since a menstrual cup collects blood instead of absorbing it, as a pad or tampon would, you might spill some blood on your clothing, towels, or mats. Simply rinse the area with cold water as soon as you can before popping it into the laundry.

Which menstrual cup should I buy?

If you buy a jacket online and find it doesn’t fit, you can return it. With intimate items like menstrual cups, you can’t exactly take it back, so you’ll want to do some research first to make sure the menstrual cup you buy is right for you. Here are some criteria to consider.

Material

When buying a menstrual cup, make sure it’s made of quality material. “Consumers should be attentive to the quality of materials being used on the menstrual cup they purchase,” Wilson says. “Some menstrual cups are made with compromising material that has not been tested internally on humans, such as ‘food-grade silicone,’” Wilson says.

Size

Different companies often offer different sized cups. Larger cups are intended for users with larger cervixes, usually people who’ve given birth vaginally. Smaller cups are intended for those with smaller cervixes. Different sizes can hold different amounts of blood, so if you have a heavy flow, there might be a large one suitable for you. Many websites have sizing guides to help you choose the best menstrual cup for you.

Other Benefits

Even when made from the same material and size, not all cups are the same. Some are thicker than others, making them harder to bend. Some, like VOXAPOD, have specific shapes designed to be more comfortable to wear and insert. Please keep in mind that not all menstrual cups last up to five years; lifespans may vary, so be sure to check the product information for each individual cup.
Don’t be afraid to explore your options, ask friends for recommendations, and read reviews online before buying a menstrual cup.
If you try one and it doesn’t feel right for you, don’t be put off menstrual cups altogether—try another. “Sometimes women need to find the right fit of menstrual cup, like they would a tampon or pad. So, if they try one brand shape and size, and it doesn’t work or isn’t quite right, they may need to try another,” Wilson says.

More Than Just Menstrual Cups

Of course, menstrual cups aren’t for everyone. Many people struggle to use them. “For some folks, mastering the menstrual cup can take a few tries, even a few cycles,” Chapman says. “We get it, though; some people aren’t into the ‘menstrual cup gospel’ but are ready to ditch the old-school disposables for a healthier, reusable period care solution,” she adds.
If you love the environment but hate menstrual cups, there are other eco-friendly hygiene products for you.

Sea Sponges

Want to feel like a mermaid throughout your period? Sea sponges, as in, the kind that naturally comes from the ocean, are a great alternative to tampons. They absorb blood and can be washed out and reused.

Period Panties

If you’re not a fan of inserting things into your vagina, there are options for you. Panties like THINX absorb period blood without spillage. Comfortable and absorbent, you simply need to rinse them out before placing them in the wash. They can be used by themselves or along with a cup or sponge to soak up potential spillage.

Reusable Pads

Washable, reusable pads are great if you like pads but don’t want to create unnecessary waste. As with absorbent underwear, these pads can also be used along with menstrual cups and sponges as they absorb any extra blood if there’s a leak. Lunapads is another great cloth pad company.
Whatever menstrual product you choose, make sure that you practice hygiene to prevent TSS and any other infections. Many companies will provide you with care instructions for their products. These instructions should be followed to ensure that your products last and stay clean.
It’s comforting to know that period products like disposable pads and tampons are not our only options anymore. Don’t be embarrassed or nervous about experimenting with different products, like menstrual cups, until you find the one that makes menstruation more comfortable and convenient for you.

The amount of calcium you need at any given time will fluctuate, because our bones are constantly breaking down and rebuilding into new bone, says Routhenstein. “The balance between bone breakdown and rebuilding changes with age,” she says. “Bone formation exceeds breakdown in periods of growth in children and adolescents, whereas in early and middle adulthood both are relatively equal.” As adults age, bones break down more than they form.
According to the National Institutes of Health, adults ages 19 to 50 need about 1,000 mg of calcium per day. After age 50, women in particular need to increase their calcium intake to around 1,200 mg per day, especially because postmenopausal women are likely to develop osteoporosis. Children ages 9 to 18 need around 1,300 mg daily because their bodies are forming new bones rapidly. Routhenstein points out that your recommended daily allowance (RDA) of calcium will remain the same if you’re pregnant or lactating.
Of course, it’s always possible to have too much of a good thing. People ages 19 to 50 shouldn’t exceed 2,500 mg of calcium a day, children ages 9 to 18 should have less than 3,000 mg per day, and those 51+ years of age shouldn’t exceed 2,000 mg of calcium.

“High calcium levels can cause kidney damage, soft tissue calcification, kidney stones, and constipation,” says Routhenstein. Routhenstein points out that to exceed these levels, one would usually have to take too many calcium supplements—it’s very hard to take in too much calcium from food alone.

What You Need to Know About Calcium Absorption

Before we look at the calcium-rich foods we should all be eating, it’s important to note that getting enough calcium is more complicated than simply taking in food with high levels of calcium. Certain minerals and vitamins can affect the way your body absorbs calcium.
For example, vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, says Routhenstein. “Milk [and] some yogurts and cereals are often fortified with vitamin D. Vitamin D is also found naturally in some foods such as cod liver oil, salmon, egg yolks, sardines, mackerel, and tuna,” she says. “Vitamin D can also be formed in the body when exposed to UV rays.”
There are certain factors that can make it harder for your body to absorb the benefits of calcium-rich food. For example, excess salt, caffeine, and alcohol, as well as high levels of oxalic acid and phytic acid, can decrease calcium absorption. Routhenstein explains that this is because those substances bind to calcium, making it harder for the body to absorb it.
“High oxalic acid–containing foods include spinach, collard greens, cauliflower, rhubarb, sweet potatoes, and beans,” Routhenstein says. “High phytic acid–containing foods include fiber-containing whole grains, beans, seeds, and nuts.”
Of course, this isn’t to say that those foods are categorically bad; it’s just a reminder that moderation is key.

Which foods are the best sources of calcium?

If you want to increase your calcium intake, there are a number of calcium-rich food sources that you can indulge in, and many of them are vegan and vegetarian friendly! According to the experts, the following foods are the best sources of calcium.

Dairy

Most of us know that dairy is a calcium-rich food. Yogurt is one of the best sources of calcium. Eight ounces of yogurt contains 42 percent of the RDA for calcium. Eight ounces of milk, on the other hand, can supply you with about 30 percent of the RDA. Cheese is also an excellent source of calcium, with parmesan, ricotta, and mozzarella being particularly rich in calcium.
Other dairy products that are rich in calcium include buttermilk and ice cream (yum!).

Kefir

Although this is another dairy product, it deserves its own subcategory. Kefir, which is a tart-tasting, fermented milk drink, is a great source of calcium, vitamin D, protein, and probiotics, according to Routhenstein.
“Research has shown that including cultured dairy products in your diet may have health benefits including increased immunity, improved digestion and regularity, decreased inflammation, decreased risk of cancer (colon, bladder, breast), and fresher breath,” Routhenstein says.
Kefir can be enjoyed as a drink on its own, in a smoothie, with your oats, or as a marinade, Routhenstein notes. The consistency is thick like yogurt, and it can be a delicious yogurt substitute.

Seeds

If you’re vegan or if you simply don’t like dairy, there are other calcium-rich food options for you. One option is seeds, says Sunny Brigham, a board-certified clinical and integrative nutrition specialist. “Chia, sunflower, and poppy seeds are great little calcium powerhouses,” Brigham says.
An ounce of chia seeds contains about 18 percent of your RDA, and they’re also a great source of protein. Sprinkle some over your oats or salad or have some in your smoothies.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are another vegan-friendly calcium-rich food. Spinach, chard, and beet greens are high in calcium, but they’re also high in oxalates, says Brigham. As mentioned earlier, oxalates prevent calcium absorption. “I still tell people to eat them because you get tons of other nutrients from these foods and you could still absorb calcium from them,” she notes.
For maximum calcium absorption, you should go for leafy greens that are low in oxalates. This includes the vitamin-rich kale, bok choy, and collards, Brigham notes.

Sardines

The edible bones in sardines make it an excellent source of calcium. It also contains vitamin D, says Brigham. A single serving of sardines contains about 33 percent of the RDA for calcium.

Tofu

Brigham notes that calcium is often used as a binding agent in the process of making tofu. As a result, tofu is a great source of calcium, with one half-cup serving offering 25 percent of your daily calcium needs. Consider replacing a meat serving with tofu every so often.

Fortified Foods

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, there are a number of foods fortified with calcium that could be a great addition to your diet. This includes plant-based milks like almond milk, soy milk, or rice milk; juices; oatmeal; and cereal.

Can supplements provide all the calcium my body needs?

If you’re not a fan of the above-mentioned foods, you might be tempted to take a calcium supplement instead. This isn’t the best idea. Brigham points out that supplements can’t supply all the calcium you need—and they might lead to some adverse health effects.

“The best place to get calcium is through food sources,” says Brigham. “There are studies that show excess supplemental calcium can increase kidney stone formation, but increased calcium from food sources [is] kidney protective. A few other studies have shown that high calcium supplementation has led to hardening of the arteries, yet again the same can’t be said for food.“
Routhenstein agrees. “Studies have shown a link with supplemental calcium intake and prostate cancer and with cardiovascular disease,” she says. “I recommend trying to get your daily dose through foods mentioned above instead.”
That said, Brigham sometimes advises her clients to take calcium supplements. “These are usually low amounts of calcium that are paired with other supplements to increase absorption in the correct locations,” she says.
As always, it’s important not to take supplements without speaking to a health practitioner first. If you’re considering taking a calcium supplement, speak to your doctor and don’t exceed the recommended dosage.

Which Herbs Are The Best For Anxiety? A Naturopathic Physician And An MD Weigh In

Perhaps you’re struggling with anxiety and you want to try a natural option to help you manage it. Or maybe you’d like to find an herbal tea or supplement to soothe stress and complement your current anti-anxiety treatment plan, whether that includes therapy, prescription medications, time outdoors, exercise, or meditation.
There are plenty of herbs out there that have anti-anxiety properties, but before you take an over-the-counter supplement or incorporate herbal teas in your diet, it’s important that you educate yourself on what you’re ingesting.
“Herbs can be extremely beneficial in the treatment of anxiety,” says Alissia Zenhausern, a naturopathic physician at NMD Wellness of Scottsdale. “It is, however, important to understand how particular herbs work when it comes to anxiety. Some herbs start working quickly while others take a few months to see an effect. But if you can stay consistent, the benefits of these herbs is tremendous.”

Understanding Herbs and How They Impact the Nervous System

Herbs that affect the nervous system are called nervine herbs or nervines, says Zenhausern. Nervines can be broken into three different categories:

  • Nervine relaxants, which relax the nervous system
  • Nervine stimulants, which stimulate the nervous system (meaning they can help with fatigue),
  • Nervine tonics, which help nourish the nervous system, improving symptoms of anxiety

When looking for herbs to soothe anxiety, nervine tonics are your best bet.
Zenhausern points out that sedatives, another category of herbs that are not nervines, can also be used in the treatment of anxiety. “Sedatives help calm the nervous system and help improve your body’s ability to respond to stress and nervousness,” she says.
They can induce sleepiness, so she suggests trying them at home near the end of the day to see how much of a sedative effect they have on you. Since anxiety can lead to insomnia, many people with anxiety also seek out natural sleep remedies, which can include herbs like valerian root, lavender, and chamomile.

Which herbs can be used for anxiety?

A number of different herbs have anti-anxiety properties according to the experts. When it comes to herbal supplements, unfortunately there are typically few high-quality peer-reviewed studies that confirm their effectiveness—often due to a lack of funding according to Joseph Feuerstein, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University and director of integrative medicine at Stamford Hospital.
This means that many physicians rely on their personal experience and training to discern what will work best for their patients. Feuerstein points out that a lack of evidence doesn’t mean that an herb doesn’t work, and since most herbs for anxiety are safe and relatively inexpensive, it’s worth experimenting to see what works for you if you’re interested in pursuing natural remedies for anxiety—even if you’re initially skeptical of the science (or lack thereof) to support their application.
Here’s what you need to know about the most commonly used anti-anxiety herbs.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

Many of us have heard of drinking chamomile tea before bed to induce sleep. Chamomile can also soothe anxiety. “Matricaria chamomilla is a great herb to combat both anxiety and depression,” Zenhausern says.
“If used as an essential oil, it can help create a mild sedative effect as well as calm your nerves by traveling to an area of your brain known as the olfactory. It is in this portion of your brain that you receive signals that allow you to smell. Smelling chamomile will help your brain relax and also reduce your body’s response to stress,” she says.
Feuerstein suggests using chamomile essential oil in a diffuser.
There are a limited number of scientific studies on the anti-anxiety effects of chamomile. Two scientific studies conducted in 2016 looked at the short-term and long-term effects of chamomile on people with generalized anxiety disorder. The results indicated that chamomile extract can soothe anxiety significantly in the short term, but the long-term study results showed no significant findings. Another study showed that chamomile can reduce the severity of both depression and anxiety in people who experience both. Although this is promising, more studies are needed to verify these results.

Lavender

“Lavender has been used for centuries as an essential oil for it calmative effects,” Feuerstein says. “There is now a new clinically tested lavender extract called lavela ws1265 which has been shown to significantly reduce anxiety levels.” Feuerstein, who administers lavender in a pill or capsule form, goes on to say, “I use it all the time for anxiety with my patients with good effect.”
Zenhausern notes that lavender is also effective at inducing sleep. “Lavender, which can be taken as a tea, topically, or even as a capsule, can be very beneficial for anxiety. I have seen the most success when combining lavender with other nervines.”
Many small studies, including a 2010 study that showed lavender capsules to be as effective in treating anxiety as Lorazepam, a benzodiazepine, indicate lavender has an anti-anxiety effect. Unfortunately, this study was very small and there is a lack of peer-reviewed evidence to confirm whether lavender should be used to treat anxiety.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

“Lemon balm is a great nervine that can not only help with anxiety but also insomnia,” Zenhausern says. It’s also often used for those with hyperthyroidism. “Although relatively safe, it should not be used in patients with acid reflux (GERD) and possibly those with hypothyroidism, but this is still under investigation,” she notes. She adds that it takes at least one month of consistently using lemon balm before you will notice its effects.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)

Passionflower is both a nervine and a sedative, Zenhausern says. It’s often used to treat insomnia and anxiety. “Although this is a wonderful, powerful herb that I use often, it cannot be used in patients that are currently on SSRIs as well as other pharmaceutical medications used to treat depression and anxiety,” she says.
SSRIs—selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors—are medications that are often prescribed for depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, passionflower can alter the effect of these and other pharmaceuticals, preventing them from working correctly. Zenhausern also adds that passionflower is not safe for use during pregnancy. “So be careful with this herb and make sure just like all herbs that you consult with your physician prior to taking any herbs.”

Kava

While some scientific research indicates that kava root—also known as kava kava—might have anti-anxiety properties, it’s a risky treatment. “I don’t use this at all as there have been cases of liver damage with kava,” Feuerstein says. Indeed, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a consumer advisory for products containing kava, which is a member of the pepper family native to the South Pacific, because of its link to liver damage.

Valerian

A sedative, Valerian is often prescribed by Feuerstein, who finds it to be an effective treatment for anxiety in his patients. Valerian can be had in a tea or capsule form. Valerian and hops taken orally together have also been shown to be effective in improving sleep in clinical studies,” he says. “The studies on using this combination for anxiety were not as conclusive, but it can also be tried to reduce anxiety levels, too.”
As for the scientific research on Valerian alone, there’s a mixture of results. A few trials have indicated that it can help with insomnia, while another review of studies on Valerian found it a safe, but not necessarily effective treatment for insomnia. A study that focused on bipolar patients found Valerian to be the most promising herbal treatment for both anxiety and insomnia. These mixed conclusions indicate that more research is needed.

How safe is it to use these herbs for anxiety?

We often mistakenly believe that herbs are safe for everyone because they can be bought without a prescription. This isn’t true, and it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before taking herbs or supplements of any kind.
Zenhausern says that although herbs can be very safe, they should only be taken after consulting with a healthcare provider as herbs can interact with one another and with certain medications.

Can these herbs be used if you’re pregnant or lactating?

Sometimes, but it’s important to discuss it with your physician first, Zenhausern says. “Although science is beginning to investigate the powers of botanical medicine, the mechanism by which certain herbs work is not completely understood, which is why I recommend patients to avoid herbs when pregnant or lactating unless they have consulted with their physician,” she explains.
Some herbs can be safe for children, but again, due to the lack of complete understanding, it is extremely important that you consult with your physician first. Zenhausern says she loves using chamomile tea for small children who have trouble falling asleep or kids who are anxious about getting on an airplane.
She says chamomile tea can be made in advance and then served cool or at room temperature (she advises against hot drinks being given to littles since they might burn themselves).
Feuerstein adds that you should only consume tested, pharmaceutical-grade herbs. The FDA doesn’t test herbs and supplements as strictly as it tests pharmaceutical medication, so the quality isn’t always consistent across brands.

Other Natural Methods for Managing Anxiety

If you’re looking for some natural, inexpensive methods for managing anxiety, consider making the following lifestyle changes. These changes, like herbs for anxiety, can complement your current anti-anxiety treatment and therapy.

  • Breathing exercises are a relatively easy, free remedy for anxiety. Deep breathing has been shown to help soothe stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
  • Exercise isn’t just great for your body—it’s also fantastic for reducing your stress levels and improving your mood. A quick run or some time spent on the yoga mat can be a smart investment in your mental health.
  • Ecotherapy, which is the practice of using nature to heal and improve your health, is another free way to manage anxiety. Scientific studies have shown that ecotherapy is a great way to reduce stress and depression.
  • Meditation is one we’ve all heard of, but it bears repeating. Meditation is a fantastic way to lift your mood and reduce anxiety and depression.

While these anti-anxiety treatments can be effective, it’s important to remember that they aren’t necessarily better than prescription anti-anxiety medications. If you need anti-anxiety medication, there’s no shame in that. Self-care includes giving your body what it needs, whether that comes in the form of lifestyle changes, botanical medicine, or a prescription medication from a trusted healthcare provider.

Are You Codependent? Here's How To Tell

Wanting to help others is a commendable personal characteristic. Being a supportive girlfriend or friend is key to maintaining solid relationships. Having your family’s back is admirable. However, as with all things, moderation is key.
It’s possible to take this helpfulness to an extreme and to cultivate one-sided, unhealthy relationships where one person feels the need to “rescue” the other—from issues as big as addiction to mishaps as small as forgetting your lunch at home one day.
Relationships where one person is always taking care of the other are often called codependent relationships, with the “helper” being a codependent person.
But what exactly is codependency, and can codependent people heal and find healthier relationships? Here’s what the experts say.

What Codependency Is—and What It Isn’t

The word codependent is often misused to describe relationships where two people spend a lot of time together or structure their lives around one another. Although codependent relationships might include those traits, there’s a lot more to codependency than that.
The term codependent was initially used to refer to the partners of alcoholics and others struggling with substance abuse, but nowadays, the term is applied more broadly. This is because the unhealthy helping behaviors initially observed in the spouses of alcoholics is prevalent in others, too.

“Codependent relationships are high-cost caretaking and rescuing relationships where one partner sacrifices in an effort to fix the problems of the other under-functioning partner,” says Shawn M Burn, PhD, a psychology professor and the author of Unhealthy Helping: A Psychological Guide to Overcoming Codependence, Enabling, and Other Dysfunctional Giving. “It differs from other close relationships in that it is highly imbalanced with one person consistently taking the role of ‘giver’ and the other of ‘taker’.”
By “high-cost” caretaking, Burn says she means caretaking that pushes the limits of your emotional, physical, and/or financial resources. “Emotionally speaking, over time the giver feels stressed, resentful, frustrated, trapped, and manipulated,” she explains. “This strains your relationship with the taker.”
Human behavior expert and life coach Trevicia Williams, PhD, says that codependent people also have a need to be needed. “People who are codependent are consumed with meeting the needs of others. They have a difficult time drawing the line between personal time, space, possessions, finances, and feelings, and that of others,” she explains.  
“They wear the feelings of others on their shoulders and assume responsibility for their problems,” Williams adds. “Codependents also feel like their feelings aren’t important. Many become people-pleasers and forgo their own happiness for someone else’s.”
In other words, a codependent person depends on other people depending on them to feel fulfilled. They value feeling needed to the point that it’s extreme and unhealthy.
We might assume that women are more likely to be codependent than men because women are often socialized into being nurturers. Interestingly, research shows that this is not necessarily the case: Men and women are equally likely to become codependent. That said, some codependent women may see martyrdom and self-sacrifice as a necessary part of fulfilling gender roles.

The Signs of a Codependent Relationship

Romantic relationships aren’t the only relationships that can be codependent: Codependency can occur in parent-child relationships, friendships, and other relationships, say the experts. Here are a few common hallmarks of codependent relationships:

One person is a giver, and the other is an under-functioning taker.

It’s normal for us to need support from our loved ones from time to time, especially if we’re dealing with a crisis. In healthy relationships, this support goes back and forth between the individuals when it’s needed. In a codependent relationship, though, these roles are consistent: One person is always giving, and the other is always taking.
“Healthy relationships are more balanced; over time there is equality in giving and receiving,” Burn reiterates. “Partners’ lives are intertwined, but they take care of each other, nurture each other, and have each other’s backs.”

The giver keeps solving the taker’s problems.

It’s natural to want to help your loved one “fix” an issue they’re facing. Sometimes it’s easy to think you’ve got the solution for issues between your partner and another person, a work problem, or a personal difficulty. However, it’s important that people learn how to take charge and solve their own issues (even if that requires getting a little encouragement from their loved ones).
Burn says that the problem-solving tendencies of the giver can enable dysfunctional tendencies in the taker. “In other words, the giver makes it easy for the taker to be irresponsible, addicted, incompetent, criminal, or dependent,” she says.

The Characteristics of a Codependent Person

In addition to the hallmarks of codependent relationships, the giver—or codependent person—alone often has certain tendencies and characteristics, regardless of who the “taker” might be.

Codependent people struggle with drawing boundaries.

They regularly sacrifice their own energy and happiness for others, and saying no is often a struggle for them.

Codependent people feel the need to control people or situations.

Codependent people don’t only struggle with drawing their own boundaries—they also tend to struggle with respecting others’ boundaries. They might do this by bossing people around, giving over-the-top advice, and solving others’ problems—even when the other person doesn’t want their help. Codependent people might enjoy having others depend on them because it means they have more control over their loved ones.

Codependent people have low self-esteem and derive their worth from helping others.

Research on codependency shows that highly codependent people often struggle with low self-esteem. In order to boost their self-esteem, codependent people do things for other people. It often feels good to help others, but when self-sacrifice is your primary source of self-worth, it can easily be taken to an extreme.

Codependent people experience extreme “emotional reactivity.”

Codependent people easily absorb the feelings of others, often taking responsibility for the feelings and actions of other people. They may also have a tendency to take the opinions of others very personally, even when the opinion doesn’t directly implicate them. This is because of their struggles with self-esteem and boundary setting.

Codependent people might struggle to communicate.

Whether it’s communicating boundaries, communicating their feelings, or discussing their emotional needs, codependent people might struggle to express themselves more than the average person.

Dysfunctional Families: Codependent Parent–Child Relationships

In some parent-child relationships, the parents try to live vicariously through their children instead of seeing their children as individuals with their own, unique identities. “Codependency in parent-child relationships is characterized by the assumption that children are to live primarily through parental expectations instead of being provided with choices to help them naturally develop their own identity,” Williams says. The problem with this is that children then aren’t given the space to grow on their own.
An example of codependency in parent–child relationships Williams often encounters is when parents over-schedule their children’s activities, leading their tween and teen kids to feel stressed out. “Children would prefer to be given options and invited to the decision-making process when it comes to extracurricular activities, especially during the school year,” she suggests. This allows them to learn how to make decisions and prioritize their own time.
Codependent relationships are unhealthy because they’re so unequal. The giver receives very little support, and the taker isn’t given the opportunity to solve their own problems, and thus to learn and grow as a person.

Causes of Codependency

What causes codependency? Usually, codependent behavior is rooted in issues stemming from childhood, Williams says.
When parents have an unhealthy balance of self, family, work, and life roles, overbearing responsibilities can lead to self-neglect,” she says. The parents prioritize other issues above their own self-care. When it comes to meeting the physical and emotional needs of the parent, roles then reverse and the child takes a lot of emotional responsibility for the parent, while the parent might neglect the emotional needs of the child. “In turn, the children become less aware of their own feelings.” Williams adds that, if this cycle isn’t broken, it can be perpetuated for generations.
More overt forms of abuse can also lead to codependency. “If you had a parent that verbally assaulted, threatened, or terrorized you; isolated and confined you; exploited or corrupted you; or overlooked, rejected, or ignored your emotional needs, you may be at risk [of being codependent],” Burn says.
“One way to look at it is that your relationship with your parent is your first love relationship and sets the stage for your later [linkbuilder id=”6597″ text=”love relationships”]: It can be what love looks like to you,” she explains. In other words, if you think—even subconsciously—that you have to subordinate your own needs to care for your parent, you might become codependent in future relationships.
There are other causes for codependency, Burn adds. “For example, you can learn codependence from parental role models. You can over-internalize religious or cultural values that prescribe self-sacrifice for others,” she explains.
There are some other risk factors for developing or continuing codependent relationships. Research suggests people with codependency are more likely to have parents with mental health issues as well as partners with chemical dependency and personal psychological issues that involve or are related to compulsive behavior.
No matter the cause of codependency, the situation can be improved. Codependent people can recover and learn healthier behaviors.

How to Treat Codependency (and Find Healthy Relationships)

If you’ve come to the conclusion that you or a loved one are codependent, you might wonder whether it’s possible to recover. The good news is that it is totally possible to unlearn these behaviors and form healthy relationships.
“With professional help, codependency can be conquered,” Williams says. “The primary factors in overcoming include learning to value [your]self and becoming more assertive when dealing with others.”
In order to treat codependency, Burns says, “I think that you first have to identify the behaviors you need to change and why you need to change them. Self-awareness can help you avoid relationships with takers who are attracted to you due to your giving nature and comfort with unequal relationships,” she explains. “Understanding the roots of your behavior is sometimes useful because different change strategies may be relevant depending on the cause.”
Learning to set boundaries is also a skill that helps codependent people form healthier relationships. “It’s not always immediately apparent that a relationship will be codependent, and there are lots of things that make setting boundaries difficult, such as the other person’s resistance and your guilt,” Burn says.

What to Do If You Are Codependent

If you think you’re codependent, there are many things you can do to help yourself. Therapy can be a great start in unlearning unhealthy behaviors—try to seek out a therapist with experience in dealing with codependent and unhealthy relationships.
Support groups, like Codependents Anonymous, can also be a huge help, as can reading books on the subject, Burn suggests. There are also plenty of online resources for people who hope to recover from codependency.
Remember that your value does not depend on helping others, and hurting yourself to help others isn’t a commendable trait—in fact, you hurt yourself and the other person by encouraging their dependency.

What to Do If a Loved One Is Codependent

Codependent people might prefer being the helpful one, but they need a little help and support themselves when it comes to healing. If you notice that your loved one has a lot of unhealthy “helping” tendencies—even if they don’t fit all the criteria for codependency—there are a few ways you can help them.

Get them talking and thinking.

Codependent people are often in denial about their tendencies. They might not even recognize how unhealthy their “helping” is since helping is often seen as inherently good. Give them space to vent and think about their behavior as this could help them process the issue and realize they need help.

Set boundaries.

As mentioned earlier, codependent people might go to extreme, unhealthy lengths to help you even when you don’t want their help. They might disrespect your boundaries in order to “help” you. Tell them that you’re happy to solve your own problems without their help. Draw a boundary by letting them know you don’t want them to go to extreme lengths to help you. This way, not only are you modeling how to set boundaries, you are also showing them that they can’t assert control over your life.

Encourage them to go to therapy, go to support groups, or read literature on codependency.

Again, this will give them space to process their behavior and heal from it.
