SWEAT Trainer Kelsey Wells

This week’s Healthy Her Way feature needs no introduction—but we’re going to try our best to put into words just how incredible this woman truly is. With 1.3 million followers (and counting) on Instagram, Kelsey Wells definitely knows how to inspire and empower people across the world—and we can’t help but fangirl over this talented mama.
When our editorial team first sat down at HealthyWay HQ to discuss who our biggest sources of motivation were in the fitness scene, one name was spoken by almost every single woman in the room. “Kelsey Wells! I follow her workouts all the time!” and “I love her posts on Instagram, she keeps it so real!” were some of the excited comments shared amongst our team.
One can’t help but wonder if Kelsey ever envisioned just how much her postpartum fitness journey would motivate people she’s never met. But that’s exactly what has transpired since Kelsey began to share her story just a few years ago.
Shortly after giving birth to her son, Anderson, about four years ago, Kelsey’s doctor recommended exercise to help her combat postpartum anxiety. Prior to this point in time, proper nutrition and regular exercise were not priorities in Kelsey’s daily life, but she knew she needed to make changes in order to learn to love herself again and appreciate her body.
In an Instagram post, Kelsey shared that she struggled with her fitness journey at first and fell off track a few times (it happens to the best of us), but she didn’t let that stop her hustle.
“There is no secret to my transformation. There is simply four years of hard work and consistency. Of trying and failing and learning and pushing forward. You don’t need hours in a gym or extreme diets. You need a healthy mindset and to never give up on yourself,” she wrote.
Kelsey’s message of perseverance and self-love is so important, and we admire how she uses her platform to share these motivational messages with those who may need to hear these words the most.
With her family, friends, and husband Ryan in her corner, Kelsey has created an extremely supportive community of women who want to prioritize exercise and a positive mindset in their daily lives. As a SWEAT trainer and the creator of the PWR workout programs, Kelsey provides something for everyone, regardless of where you are on your fitness journey. She even has crafted workouts for fellow mothers in all stages of pregnancy and postpartum fitness.
The more we get to know the woman behind the workouts, the more we’re in awe of all that Kelsey has accomplished in such a short amount of time. We couldn’t be more honored to share this feature with our readers and can’t wait to see what else Kelsey will accomplish in the years to come.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

Anderson wakes me up at 6 a.m. ready to start the day. He’s the best alarm clock.
Then meditation: Five minutes of focus or inspirational talks every morning. This helps me to center myself and mentally prepare for the day ahead.
Skin care: I wash my face every morning and hydrate my skin with moisturiser. I make sure I moisturise my entire body.
Breakfast: Usually scrambled egg whites and vegetables or greek yogurt with honey and berries.
Get dressed for the day ahead: I liked to get dressed for the day pretty early on; this helps to set the tone of the day
11:30 to 12:30 p.m.: This is my time to get my workout in.
12:30 to 1:30 p.m.: I create all of my social content while at the gym.
1:30 to 5 p.m.: Afternoons are my hours to work on program development, creating more content, writing posts, responding to emails, and meetings with my team.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

I take a very holistic approach to self-care. I always try and view my body from a place of positivity and appreciation. This helps me to prioritize my exercise and incorporate the right foods into my day—because I deserve to take care of my body.
The ways in which I practice self-care are through:

  1. Daily exercise, whether it be my PWR program, a hike, or chasing Anderson around the house. Being active and taking care of my body is important for not only my physical health but, more importantly, my mental health.
  2. Consuming a balanced diet: Fueling my body with nutrient-rich foods gives me the energy to take on my day.
  3. Meditation: Daily meditation helps me to center myself and mentally prepare myself to achieve everything I need to throughout the day.

How do you stay inspired?

I practice what I preach—I want to be happy and healthy and have a quality life with my family.
The women in my community also inspire me every day. They are the reason I do what I do. I found my true passion in fitness and truly have my dream job!

Let’s Kick It: My Go-To Soccer Workout For A Strong Body And Mind

I started playing soccer at the age of three and haven’t been able to shake my love of the sport since. In middle school, my little sister and I were notorious in our neighborhood for breaking off the tops of fence posts as we attempted to chip soccer balls over the “obstacles” to each other. My dad was thrilled about the “charm” the missing pieces of fence added to our home, let me tell you. But no matter how much trouble we got in, I couldn’t wait to get home from school the next day so that I could go outside and play soccer.
After seven years of select soccer, winning gold at the Junior Olympics in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and playing on my high school varsity team, I began to feel burnt out by the sport that had always been a source of joy for me and made the difficult decision not to pursue playing soccer at the college level.
Shortly after I settled into my dorm room, however, I found myself wishing that I’d continued to play soccer at a competitive level and couldn’t help but wonder if I’d made a mistake. Craving the grass underneath my cleats, I joined an otherwise all-male intramural team and quickly became the target opponents wanted to push off the ball any chance they got.
I relished the challenge and found myself working on my footwork, core strength, and speed in my downtime after class so that I could outsmart the players who simply wanted to knock me down. As my speed and skills improved, I was knocked down less and found myself enjoying more room on the field as my teammates rallied around me.
Although the intramural team disbanded one season later, I kept working on my footwork and still use some of the same drills I’ve learned from my coaches along the way as my go-to soccer workout on days when I want to switch up my fitness routine a bit.
All you need to complete this workout is a soccer ball and some open space. I’ll typically walk across the street and execute this workout on the middle school soccer fields adjacent to my home. But this workout can also be done in a backyard, local park, or even indoors (though I would definitely recommend a room with some space and storing any valuables in a safe place). I also typically wear soccer cleats for this workout, but they are not required—just be sure to avoid any damp/wet grass if you’re in tennis shoes as you could easily slip and end up on your bum.

But first…we need to warm up those muscles.

Before you dive into the specific exercises, I strongly recommend warming up your body a bit for these soccer-style movements. I try to do my warm up in an area where I have 10+ yards to run (like the soccer field at the middle school across from my home, but a backyard setting works nicely here as well).
Using the 10-yard marker on the field, I do the following movements consecutively to complete one circuit. I do each movement down to the marker and back to the starting position before beginning the next exercise. All four exercises combined compose my mini circuit. I do this entire circuit a total of five times, taking 30-second breaks after each individual exercise.

  • Butt kicks: This movement is similar to a light jog, but instead of going with your normal gait, you bring the backs of your heels up to lightly kick your own bum as you move forward. If you don’t want grass and/or mud stains on your clothes, you can place your hands, palms facing out, near the bottom of your cheeks so that you can kick your hands instead.
  • Side shuffles: With your hips shoulder width apart, squat low as though you are a hockey goalie (you can put your hands out in front if this helps you with balance) and shuffle sideways like a crab without crossing your legs over each other. You should be facing right or left during this movement, not looking straight ahead. Begin by facing right and then switch to facing left on your return.
  • High knees: This movement is similar to marching in place, except you are moving your body forward at a faster pace. Try to bring each knee up to about chest level and remember to keep breathing.
  • Slow jog: Take this time to be mindful of how your body is feeling. This is a great time to catch your breath if you’re feeling a bit winded from the other exercises.

After I’ve warmed up my body and awoken my legs from their sedentary slumber, I like to gently stretch for about five minutes. During this time I’ll typically focus on stretching my hamstrings, quads, calf muscles, and hips to prepare my body for the remaining exercises.

My Go-To Soccer Workout

Full disclosure: some of the following exercise names (i.e. juggling) are legit, but some are completely made up by my brain as a way to remember the motions involved.

Tap, Tap, Pull

With your soccer ball in between your legs, pass the ball with the inside of your right foot to the inside of your left foot (this counts as the first tap in the title). As soon as the ball touches your left foot, pass the ball slightly in front of your right foot (this counts as the second tap). The soccer ball will now be slightly in front of your right foot. Using the bottom of your right foot (specifically the front portion or ball of your foot), pull the soccer ball back until your right foot is under your torso and the ball is in front of your right foot and begin the exercise over again. Do the entire tap, tap, pull motion 10 times on each side.

Push-Pull

While balancing on your left foot, tap the soccer ball slightly forward with the inside of your right foot and then pull it back closer to your body using the bottom of your right foot as you continue to hop and balance on your left foot. Do this exercise 10 times on each side.

Juggling

Juggling is one of the cooler soccer skills in my opinion, but it isn’t as easy as it looks. Try juggling the soccer ball on your thighs for three to five minutes, using the top of your thighs to make contact with the soccer ball. You can incorporate other body parts (feet, shoulders, and head!) as you become more comfortable, but the thighs are typically a great place to start since they offer more surface area. The key is to keep your touches soft and controlled so that you are able to keep the ball close to your body.

Weave

Place eight to ten cones (or household items as makeshift cones—I personally like using mason jars) in a straight line about two steps apart. Using the inside and outside surfaces of your right foot only, weave the soccer ball through the cones—going around the outside of one cone, then the inside of another, then back to the outside until you’ve gone through the entire line of cones. Once you arrive at the other end, turn around and weave your way back using only the opposite foot. This counts as one round. Repeat this weaving motion 6 to 10 times.

Roll Over

With the soccer ball near your right foot, gently place your right foot on the side of the soccer ball and roll the ball underneath the sole of your foot so that the soccer ball winds up on your left side. Repeat the motion with your left foot to return the ball to your right side. Do this movement 20 times total, switching your dominant foot with each roll.

Toe Taps

With the soccer ball placed in front of you, lightly tap the top of the ball with the bottom of your right foot then alternate to tap the top of the ball with the bottom of your left foot. Repeat this motion as you pick up the pace of your taps and find your rhythm. Do this for three 30 second rounds, resting for 10 to 15 seconds between each round.
Want to kick it up a notch? For an added layer of difficulty, slowly move your body and the soccer ball forward as you tap the top of the ball. This will require you to lightly push or roll the soccer ball forward as you tap. Once you have this motion down, you can try moving backward and even side-to-side while maintaining your toe tap rhythm.

Bonus: Ab Work

Keep It Up

For this exercise, imagine that the soccer ball is something extremely important to you that you do not want to drop. You want to hold this item up and keep it off the ground throughout this entire exercise (think: the floor is lava!).
Starting in a seated position, lift both of your feet off of the ground while holding the soccer ball out in front of you. Try to hold this position for three 30 second rounds, taking 10 to 15 seconds to rest in between each round.

Ball Pass

Lay down flat on your back with your legs straight out in front of you (your feet should be hip-width apart), hold the soccer ball with both hands above your head so that the soccer ball and your body are making a straight line. Without straining your neck, keep both legs straight while bringing them up close to the center of your body and simultaneously using your arms to bring the soccer ball up to meet your legs. From there, place the ball in between your feet (squeeze tightly so that the ball cannot fall out) and bring your legs and arms back to the starting position. The soccer ball should now be in between your feet—not your hands. Repeat this 10 to 15 times—passing the ball between your feet and your hands—for 3 sets.

Cooldown

To cool down, I will jog once or twice (depends on my mood to be honest) around the entire soccer field (you could jog around your backyard, take a lap around the playground, or even jump rope for a few minutes) before I stretch for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. I don’t have a specific stretching routine for my cool down, I just really try to listen to my body and focus on where I’m feeling a bit tight.
When my body and mind are feeling more at ease, I like to incorporate some breathwork, specifically the equal breathing technique, to further calm my mind and slow my heart rate. In a seated position on the field, I will breathe in through my nose for 5 counts and out of my nose for 5 counts for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. This time allows me to meditate and show gratitude for my body, the environment, and the workout I just accomplished as a strong body is not complete without a strong mind.
If you try my soccer workout, I want to know your thoughts! Post in the HealthyWay Collective Facebook group if you enjoyed this soccer-inspired sweat-sesh or let me know what exercises you would add.

How To Build The Ultimate Home Gym When You’re Short On Space (And Cash)

The great gym debate was my daily struggle throughout the first two years of my professional career. Each evening during my commute I would ask myself: Should I force myself to go to the gym when all I want to do is beat traffic and get home to my fur babe? Do I race home only to find myself sitting on the couch filled with regret that I hadn’t just sucked it up and prioritized physical exercise? Is the money I’m spending on this gym membership each month actually worth it if I don’t attend daily?
Now you may be wondering, Why doesn’t this chick wake up earlier and work out before she goes to the office? And that, my fellow boss babes, is a valid question. I have, however, attempted the early-riser workout multiple times during my lifetime, and it has a success rate of zero for me since I am not my true self in the morning but instead a crabby toddler trapped inside of a grown woman’s body.
Since I’ve learned through trial and error that evening workouts are what works best for my schedule and body, I was initially drawn to the idea of a gym membership, especially one that offered access to various fitness classes later in the day. Despite this enticing group class atmosphere, I still found myself rushing home after a long day at work and avoiding the gym entirely. As I calculated the cost of my gym membership in my head ($20 per month x 12 = $240 each year), it dawned on me that I could remove this daily source of stress and guilt by creating my own home gym!

Home Sweet Home

Shortly after this realization, I decided to cancel my gym membership and began seeking free ways to keep my body moving after work such as plogging and began repurposing my gym membership money into funds for equipment for my home gym.
Fortunately for me, my house has a small extra bedroom (8 x 10) that my fiancé and I use as an office that I knew would be the ideal place to create my gym. Although this room isn’t particularly large, it does offer a lot of natural light, which I find comforting after a long day at the office staring at a computer monitor (or three).
As I began to brainstorm what items I would need for my home gym, I knew that I wanted to keep the space both minimalistic and motivating since—let’s face it—I’m 26 and short on time and cash, so I want to make my home workout efforts count. To create my ideal workout sanctuary, I prioritized finding versatile, compact fitness equipment that could be easily stored in a corner of the office/home gym room.

So what’s in my home gym, you ask?

  • Resistance bands: These different colored natural latex bands are associated with varying levels of resistance so that you can increase the level of difficulty as you become more experienced. I was drawn to this particular set because they came with a compact storage bag and a workout instruction guide. Looking for some full-body resistance band exercises to try? Look no further, sis. HealthyWay HQ has you covered, just click here.
  • Adjustable kettlebell: Some people choose to buy a kettlebell set (typically with three individual kettlebells of varying weights), and that is totally fine, but I personally love the portability of this adjustable kettlebell. You can easily adjust this kettlebell from 5 lbs to 8 lbs and up to 12 lbs with a simple click and twist motion. Kettlebell workouts are a wonderful option for a full-body workout and are my go-to if I’m feeling anxious, so this adjustable kettlebell was a must-have item for my home gym.
  • Jump rope: Ah, the trusty jump rope! This workout staple is not only compact and easy to transport, but jumping rope also has some impressive cardio benefits. (If you aren’t blessed with high ceilings like I am, you might need to take this part of your home workout into the yard.) Though I’m no jump rope queen like Janine Delaney, I do find jumping rope a great way to warm up my body before starting a bodyweight workout circuit. Want to try the HealthyWay jump-rope workout challenge? Start here.
  • Dumbbells: Dumbbells were another item that I knew I wanted to have in my home gym. When I went to local sporting goods stores to buy new dumbbells, however, I was a bit startled by the prices, so I began scouring local garage and estate sales in the hopes of finding a more budget-friendly dumbbell set. About two months later, I purchased a pair of 10 lb dumbbells for $3 from an elderly man who was moving to Florida to retire. Although he refused to take me to the beach with him, he did give me a great deal on these gently used dumbbells! If you’re trying to save some cheddar while designing your home gym space, I strongly recommend exploring what your local garage salers have to offer. If Amazon shopping is more your thing, these cast-iron and rubber dumbbells are a great place to start your search.

  • Yoga mat + towel: Despite the fact that hot yoga is my practice of choice, I still enjoy rolling out my mat at home for a 20-30 minute vinyasa flow at least once each week. This reversible lululemon yoga mat and towel was definitely a splurge, but since I use these items multiple times per week (at home and in a studio setting), this was an investment that I could justify.
  • Soccer ball: My athletic career began at the age of three when my father gave me my first soccer ball. A select soccer career and Junior Olympics championship later, I still always keep a soccer ball handy (although my footwork and cardio are nowhere near what they used to be). A soccer ball is a relatively cheap investment that can last for years. Once a week I’ll juggle the soccer ball or do various exercises in my home gym, using household items like mason jars in place of cones. These exercises keep my mind focused and heart rate elevated as I challenge myself with different patterns to put my footwork to the test. Plus, this is a great way for me to switch up my workout routine that brings back happy memories. For full disclosure: I have had the same size 5 soccer ball for the past five years, so this wasn’t something that I needed to buy for my home gym. I am personally a fan of adidas soccer balls, but it is really a matter of personal preference. Most quality soccer balls will cost between $20 to $45 on average.
  • Seventh Generation Disinfecting Wipes: I’m admittedly a bit of a germaphobe, so I like to keep these natural surface cleaning wipes handy in my home gym to wipe down any equipment (aside from my yoga mat—but for ways to clean your yoga mat, we’ve got you covered here) after use. It also makes me feel good to take care of my home gym items so that I can ideally extend the life of these purchases and make my investments last for years to come.

[products ids=’1007066,1007070,1007072,1007075′ type=full]
By making conscious product selections, I was able to acquire all of the equipment that I needed for my home gym for less than I would’ve spent on a one-year gym membership. If my calculations are correct *pushes up glasses*, these items cost around $160 (we can call it $180 if I had purchased a new soccer ball), so I’ve already saved $60 by making this switch.
Aside from the cost aspect, one of the things I love most about my home gym is that I no longer have to worry about the great gym debate during my commute after work because my gym is within my home.
With these few items, I now have the ability to do cardio workouts, kettlebell exercises, bodyweight workouts, yoga flows, and so much more—all from the comfort of my home! When I’m feeling uninspired, I simply turn to YouTube and watch workout videos from Blogilates or listen to a HealthyWay Collective playlist for a motivation boost.
Speaking of motivation—that is the final important element of my home gym space. To remind me why I began my fitness journey in the first place, I’ve hung various positive affirmations and images of women who inspire me on the walls and try to keep the room as clutter-free as possible. To achieve this, I keep my yoga mat and towel in a slender, hand-me-down basket from my mom, use a homemade wooden wall mount for my jump rope and resistance bands, and keep the remainder of my exercise equipment in a small storage box that was once collecting dust in my basement.
With a little bit of space, a few repurposed items, and some lucky Amazon steals and garage sale finds, you too can create your ultimate home gym for less than what you would spend on a gym membership. With that being said, I want to conclude by pointing out that my intent is to show that you can create an epic home gym for less than what you would spend on a gym membership…but that doesn’t mean you should. If the gym is your happy place—go to the gym and get your sweat on, girl! Each one of us has our own unique fitness journey and sources of motivation, so do what works best for you.
If you create your own home gym space, I’d love to see! Be sure to post your pics in the HealthyWay Collective Facebook group or tag @itsthehealthyway on Instagram.

Sweat And Slip Tested: The Best Yoga Mats For Your Heated Practice

My love affair with hot yoga began earlier this year, and I haven’t looked back since—dedicating at least two hours each week to my practice at my favorite local yoga studio. Although hot yoga in a studio setting is my preference, I also roll out the mat at home each week to refocus my energy and tune in to my body.
While I would still consider myself a beginner student, I have tested a variety of yoga mats on my journey thus far—trying everything from a paper-thin clearance mat from a local sporting goods store to the most expensive mat I could find at lululemon. Along the way, I’ve had many classes filled with slippery Downward Dogs and frustrating moments, but I’ve also learned (admittedly the hard way and through online research) which features I desire most in a reliable hot yoga mat.
best-hot-yoga-mats
To save others from this slippery struggle, I spent the last month sweat testing three of the most popular and highly recommended hot yoga mats. To keep the playing field as level as possible and avoid any bad feelings from awkward first impressions, I used each mat during two separate 60-minute hot yoga classes at my favorite local yoga studio.
This specific class is a heated Vinyasa flow in a studio that offers high humidity and temperatures ranging from 100 to 103 degrees. I also want to note that the floors at my studio are textured, antimicrobial mats (not wood) so please keep this in mind if you practice at a studio that has a different flooring material.
In addition to my hot yoga classes, I used each mat during one at-home flow guided by the wisdom of Yoga With Adriene. I also washed and air dried all three mats and documented as much as possible throughout my various tests. Although it was a tough decision, one hot yoga mat did outperform the others—and you’ll soon know why.

Criteria I Considered While Testing the Hot Yoga Mats

Before I can tell you which yoga mat was my favorite for heated flows, let me first explain how I judged each mat. During my testing process, there was some important criteria that I homed in on and made sure to note.
First and foremost, I focused on each mat’s comfort and durability. Since I practice hot yoga weekly, durability is critical. I need a mat that is supportive and able to cushion my joints while withstanding weekly use without flaking into pieces or losing its integrity. Sustaining a yoga practice can be expensive enough as is, so it’s important to most of us that we choose a comfortable, quality product that is worth the $60 to $100 investment you’ll be making in a hot yoga mat.
Another key factor that I tested throughout this process was the slip and grip of each mat, as we all know there’s nothing worse than straining to prevent your hands and feet from slipping out of position or trying to focus on your breath as your yoga mat slowly slides across the studio floor. To help you avoid these annoyances, I documented how each mat gripped the studio floor and if it stayed in place throughout the entire 60-minute heated flow or required readjustments.
Since floor grippage is just half the battle when it comes to hot yoga, these mats also had to withstand the slip test during my 100-degree Vinyasa flows to win a place in my heart. If I didn’t feel secure and grounded in my poses, you’re definitely going to hear about it in my reviews.
best-hot-yoga-mats-reviewed
As much as I love hot yoga, it involves a lot of sweat and can become a wet, smelly experience without the proper equipment. For context, I would consider my perspiration level moderate to high, with the majority of my sweat formation occurring around my hands, feet, chest (aka boob sweat), and hairline. Throughout my mat-filled month, I documented which yoga mats had sweat wicking and antimicrobial properties that were effective at preventing mold and mildew from forming.
With that being said, some hot yoga stench is unavoidable, which is why properly caring for your yoga mat is important both in terms of cleanliness and extending the life of your investment. In each review, I discuss the care process I used to clean each yoga mat—and if it was effective.
The final factor that I kept in mind during this process was versatility. Despite the fact that hot yoga is my favorite way to practice self-care, I do still want the flexibility to pursue a non-heated flow should the opportunity arise. Therefore, I tested each mat in a non-heated setting (aka my home) using Yoga With Adriene as my guide. Since this was ultimately a test to find the best hot yoga mat, I did not let the versatility component alter any of my final rankings, but I did include it in my review so that you can take it into consideration if you too desire a mat that can be used for a variety of different types of yoga.
So which hot yoga mat was my winner? Read on to find out.
[sol title=”Gaiam Sol Studio Select Dry-Grip Yoga Mat” subheader=”Mat Dimensions: 68” L × 24” W × 5 mm | Weight 4.25 lb”]
Upon my initial inspection, the Gaiam Sol Studio mat felt both sturdy and supportive with the right amount of cushioning. The top of this yoga mat has a smooth rubber-like finish despite being made of PVC and features an appealing geometric pattern in the center.
While this mat may not be reversible, it performed well both in and out of the studio setting. One of my favorite things about this yoga mat? It comes with a lifetime guarantee, which can put any budget-conscious buyer (me included) more at ease.

Pros

From my first Downward Dog to Tree Pose to Savasana, this mat outshined my initial expectations. I felt grounded and secure in my postures—my hands and feet felt almost like they were stuck to the mat (but without the unpleasant sticky sensation). Although the instructions on the mat said to wipe it down with a damp towel prior to class to make it stickier, I chose to test the mat without doing so and truthfully didn’t feel that this was necessary (especially once I began to sweat). If your perspiration level is on the lighter side, however, you might consider wiping this mat down with a damp towel prior to your hot yoga class per the instructions.
The Gaiam Sol Studio Select Dry-Grip Yoga Mat also stayed in place on the studio floor from the moment I put it down. I didn’t need to readjust the mat at all during my practice and felt no need to use a mat towel.
As mentioned previously, I also tested this mat in a non-heated setting during my home yoga practice. Despite the change in scenery, this mat maintained its dry-grip promise as my hands, feet, and the mat itself stayed firmly in place throughout my flow. After using this mat on three separate occasions, there was no flaking or noticeable damage to the mat.
best-hot-yoga-mat-gaiam
In terms of care, I followed the instructions, which advised using cold water and mild detergent to clean the mat before hanging it to dry. I hung the yoga mat over my shower curtain and wiped it down with a clean washcloth, cold water, and my beloved Caldrea detergent, then hung it to dry on a wooden rack in my laundry room overnight. The following morning, the Gaiam Sol Studio Select Dry-Grip Yoga Mat was completely dry and ready for another flow.

Cons

The first thing I noticed about this mat upon opening its package was its strong chemical-like smell, despite the fact that this product is rubber-, latex-, and 6P-free. I let the mat sit out for two days prior to my first use, but this still wasn’t enough time. The odor was so strong that it stung my nostrils during Child’s Pose—so much that I wound up eager to make my way to Warrior I to gain some distance from the mat. It even made my car smell during my 15-minute ride home from class!
This strong scent made it difficult for me to determine if the mat developed any other odors during my first use. Because of this experience, I laid this mat out for four more days and washed it before testing it again. I’m happy to report that my second experience was significantly better in terms of smell. If I could turn back time, I would air this mat out for five to seven days and wash it once prior to using it for the first time.
While not as offensive as the odor, the stickiness of this mat did result in the appearance of lint, dog hair, and other small items from the studio floor and my body during my practice. This wasn’t a huge deterrent by any means, but something I felt was worth noting if you have furry friends who love practicing yoga by your side.
Finally, to be as forthcoming as possible, I also wanted to share one moment in class where my foot awkwardly brushed into the mat as I was moving from a Three-Legged dog into a lunge. I know it’s a totally beginner-yogi move but hey, I’m still learning. This is worth mentioning because when my foot brushed into the mat the sensation was similar to that of a pencil eraser burn because of the material the top of this yoga mat is made of. Although it was more of an odd sensation than a painful one, it is still something worth keeping in mind if your transitions aren’t yet fluid.

Considerations

It’s worth mentioning that this yoga mat’s product description states that it can show more signs of wear and tear if left exposed to the sun for extended periods of time, so this might not be the best choice if you prefer to dry your yoga mat outdoors.
While this wasn’t my winner as the best mat for hot yoga, the Gaiam Sol Studio Select Dry-Grip Yoga Mat was the most budget-friendly of the mats tested and it delivered a slip-free performance across the board. I would gladly welcome another hot yoga class on this mat.

[sol title=”Manduka eQua Hot Yoga Mat” subheader=”Mat Dimensions: 68” L × 24” W × 4 mm | Weight 5 lb”]
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly hot yoga mat, the Manduka eQua could be the perfect fit for your practice. According to Manduka, the bottom layer of this hybrid mat is made from sustainably harvested natural tree rubber,” and no toxic chemicals are used to soften the rubber during construction. The microfiber-towel top layer is soft to the touch and features a limited edition artist design by the talented Brent Broza (@brozaphoto), meaning this yoga mat is easy on the eyes.
For a point of comparison, the Manduka eQua mat is just slightly heavier than the Gaiam mat, but the Manduka is thinner and able to be rolled into a more compact shape during transportation. Similar to the Gaiam mat, the Manduka eQua mat is not reversible.
I also feel the need to disclose that I felt like a total badass during my hot yoga class when I realized that my instructor had the same Manduka eQua mat featuring a different artist’s design. Eco-friendly and aesthetically appealing are definitely positives, but would this mat withstand 100-degree temperatures and Taylor sweat?

Pros

Although this mat is 1 mm thinner than the other two mats that I tested, my wrists and feet still felt supported and I did not notice any other aches and pains during class. This mat did provide a bit less cushion compared to the other two mats tested, but I didn’t mind the firmness and was still comfortable throughout my flow.
I was also extremely impressed by the sweat-activated microfiber top layer, which absorbed my perspiration during class. I was truly mind blown to see that the multitude of sweat spots that has accumulated on the mat during class had dried almost completely during my short 15-minute ride home.
The bottom layer of this hybrid mat features a textured pattern that is designed to grip the floor and keep the mat in place. During my studio experience, this hot yoga mat stayed firmly in place throughout the duration of my practice and did not require any adjusting, nor did the tree rubber flake or break at any point.
best-hot-yoga-mat-manduka
I followed the care instructions, which indicated the mat should be cleaned using cold water and a mild detergent (again, I used Caldrea). Compared to the other two mats tested, this mat was the heaviest when wet. I also hung this mat to dry on a wooden rack in my laundry room. When I checked the mat about six hours after washing it, it was only slightly damp. By the following morning, the Manduka eQua mat was fully dry and the design didn’t show any signs of fading after washing.

Cons

Although not quite like the strong chemical scent of the Gaiam mat, the Manduka eQua mat had its own unique scent when I first opened the packaging. If I had to describe the scent it would be a combination of pine trees and rubber. While this odor wasn’t as unpleasant or intense as the Gaiam mat, it did take about three days of lying out and a cleaning session before the scent began to dissipate.
Due to the higher price point of this mat, I was disappointed to see my hands slipping forward on the mat during my first few Downward Dog postures. I didn’t slip to the point of falling out of any poses, but the unwanted movement did make my practice more difficult as my focus was on my sliding hands instead of connecting with my body. I noted that my slipping hands did pull the microfiber top layer slightly, but this was not severe enough to result in any bunching.
Although my hands were slipping in certain poses, I did not feel that using a towel was necessary with this yoga mat after applying some water near the hand and foot areas. Unfortunately, I noticed the same slipping issue when I tested this mat outside of a heated studio setting.
While the Manduka eQua mat design held up to the recommended cleaning process, I was saddened to see that the top edge of the mat had begun to fray slightly after I washed and air dried it once. Though the fraying was relatively minor, I was disappointed to see this happen after one wash due to the higher price point of this yoga mat.

Considerations

I didn’t personally experience this, but some other users of this hot yoga mat have reported their Manduka eQua mat slipping and sliding on certain studio surfaces like wood flooring, which is worth mentioning since not every studio has a mat floor like mine.
Though I completely respect the eco-friendly nature of this product, I would’ve expected a less-slippery hot yoga mat for this price tag.

[sol title=”lululemon Reversible 5mm Mat + Towel” subheader=”Mat Dimensions: 71” L × 26” W × 5 mm | 5.24 lb”]
Although this mat was the same thickness as the Gaiam mat, the lululemon mat had a few unique features. First and foremost, this mat is reversible—with one firm, sticky side ideal for hot yoga and a softer side for non-heated flows. This mat was slightly larger than the other two mats that I tested but at my height of 5’5”, I did not find this mat to be too much to handle and enjoyed the extra room during Savasana.
Out of curiosity, I arrived at the studio about 10 minutes early the first time I used this mat to determine if the softer side of this reversible mat would be suitable for hot yoga. I quickly realized that the soft side was a bit too slippery to be a good fit for my heated practice, so I only tested the smooth, firm side of this mat during my hot yoga classes.
To test the effectiveness of this lululemon mat and microfiber towel combo, I used the mat for 30 minutes without the towel and then placed the towel on top for the remainder of class.

Pros

I’m not quite sure how lululemon does it, but in my humble opinion, this reversible mat is the perfect combination of cushion and support for hot yoga. This mat was durable and showed no signs of wear and tear throughout my testing process. This yoga mat also features a polyurethane top layer that absorbs moisture in addition to antimicrobial properties to keep mold and mildew at bay, which is what I like to call a win-win.
This mat also exuded the least amount of odor upon initial opening. I only laid this yoga mat out for one day prior to use and while it did have a faint rubber-like smell, it was nothing close to that of the Gaiam or Manduka mats. In a perfect world, I would’ve laid this mat out for two to three days prior to my first hot yoga class.
During my hot yoga classes, this mat stayed in place on the studio floor and did not require a single adjustment. Much like my mat, I felt supported and stable throughout my practice. My hands and feet never slipped on this mat—with or without the towel.
Speaking of the mat towel, this microfiber addition wasn’t necessary due to the impressive performance of the mat. However, it was an added bonus. The towel is very soft and smooth to the touch and fits the mat perfectly, covering every inch. There was no fraying around any of the edges of the towel before or after use. Much like the lululemon reversible mat, the towel stayed in place throughout class and absorbed my sweat without becoming slippery or bunching.
best-hot-yoga-mat-lululemon
The care instructions for this mat said to wash it with warm soapy water, which is very vague, in my opinion. I pondered whether I should use dish soap or body soap, and since I was feeling uncertain, I asked a friend who is a former lululemon educator how to clean this reversible mat. She suggested a warm water and baking soda mixture and wiping the mat down before hanging it to dry, which is exactly what I did. I was amazed by how fast this mat dried, as it was almost completely dry in under six hours.
Note: I did not fully submerge this yoga mat in water. I thoroughly wiped it down with the mixture until both the front and back were damp.

Cons

Although this mat was my favorite hot yoga mat during practice, it did have one noticeable flaw.
The moment I placed my forehead on the mat for my first child’s pose, I raised my head to discover a dark circular mark on the mat. As I continued through class, I noticed more dark marks on the mat concentrated in areas where I sweat the most, like my feet and hairline. These darker spots did not fade during class and I was relieved when 30 minutes had passed and I could cover them with the mat towel. I’m still uncertain whether this was an odd reaction between the material and the oils on my skin or if this mat creates these dark markings when it comes in contact with sweat.
Hoping the marks would fade once I had removed the mat form the humid classroom, I laid the mat to dry at home and checked it two hours later. I was bummed to see that the dark spots were still on the mat.
After washing the mat twice with a baking soda and water mixture (don’t forget to use a little elbow grease), I was pleased to see that the dark spots had finally faded and were hardly detectable. While this isn’t the most visually appealing outcome, it did not detract from my practice—other than shifting my mental state for a few brief seconds—nor did it make the mat slippery in any way.

Considerations

This lululemon mat is indeed reversible, but I would not recommend using the softer, grooved side of this mat for hot yoga because it does become pretty slippery in a heated setting.
By now it’s probably obvious, but the lululemon reversible 5mm mat is my winner for the best hot yoga mat due to its durability and comfortable, no-slip performance through my 100-degree tests and unheated flow.

Healthy Her Way: Movement × Meditation Teacher Kait Hurley

Between the office grind and your personal life, you’re a bundle of stress. You’ve heard that meditation can help you calm your mind and dispel feelings of anxiety, so you’re ready to give it a try. You sit on the floor in a quiet area, cross your legs (maybe even light a candle or two), and close your eyes. No matter how hard you try to relax and breathe, you still cannot stop the thoughts from rolling around in your mind, and you quickly decide to postpone your meditation practice for another day.

If this scenario sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Despite the fact that she is now the founder of the Move + Meditate Method, Kait Hurley once shared that same struggle. In her early twenties, Kait battled with feelings of stress, anxiety, and guilt related to food. She felt overwhelmed by her life as an NCAA athlete and began letting her running success define her body image and sense of self-worth, often resulting in negative self-talk. Kait hoped that these feelings would eventually go away on their own once she stopped running competitively, but they didn’t. In her late twenties, after a series of anxiety attacks, Kait eventually decided to give meditation a try after her therapist and a friend recommended it.
Even though she was skeptical, Kait committed to a daily meditation practice. Within a few weeks, she started to notice a big reduction in stress and a newfound ability to manage the energies of her anxiety. Her anxiety didn’t go away—she just got better at listening to it and using the information to guide her. Even though Kait was feeling steadier and more resilient, she didn’t actually enjoy the process of meditating. It felt difficult. Inconvenient. Like a dreaded chore that had to get done even though it was helping.
One of the big reasons why Kait struggled was because each day she felt like she either had time to exercise or time to meditate—there didn’t seem to be time for both. Kait missed her vigorous sweat sessions and often chose meditation over exercise because it was the meditation that kept the anxiety attacks at bay. It was only when Kait started combining her daily exercise sessions with meditation that she started to find some joy and ease in the practice. Not only was it more time efficient, but the meditation itself became more enjoyable. Because once you blow off steam and sweat, you’re less antsy and more open to the experience of meditating.
The more she experienced the benefits of movement and meditation, the more she knew she had to share it with others. That’s what led Kait to launch her website in the spring of 2017. On kaithurley.com, Kait shares her online workout and meditation classes plus special guided programs and challenges for those looking for more guidance. Whether you’re new to meditation, you’ve got an existing practice, or you’re just looking for a fun and effective way to feel amazing at home and on the go, Kait is a wonderful, knowledgeable resource (and a kind soul to boot).

Instead of wondering how to get happy one day, start exploring what you can do to get happy today, and see the benefits for yourself.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

What daily routine? Just kidding. Every day looks different for me, but there are a few things that stay the same. I always wake up, brush my teeth, do a few simple moves—like child’s pose, side body stretches, and cat cows—then I meditate. I meet with my husband every morning by 10 a.m. He also happens to be my business partner, and these meetings set the tone for our day. We decide exactly what our priorities are and what we’re each tackling. It helps me stay on track and ensures I’m working on the most important things that will move our business forward.
Honestly? I’m pretty terrible at eating breakfast. I prefer a matcha latte with full-fat coconut milk to anything else early in the morning. Then I sit down for a bigger meal around 11 a.m. I avoid scheduling any meetings or calls before 1:30 p.m. That allows me to block off my mornings and use that time to get work done. Around 3 or 4 p.m., that’s when I move and meditate on my own. Usually that looks like a sweat session in my living room before I sit in the quiet. Once or twice a week, I might pop into a yoga class in Portland with my mom or a friend. There are incredible teachers who I adore and learn from here. Mostly though, I do my own thing depending on how I’m feeling and what my schedule allows for.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

It’s the simple things. Moving my body in a way that feels good but also challenges me. Sitting in the quiet and meditating. Drinking lots of water. Calling my mom or meeting a friend for some matcha. Staying in with my husband and cat Javier to watch HBO and cook dinner. I work a lot, and I love what I do. My self-care practices need to fit into my busy life—not the other way around. I’m always looking for strategies to uncover a little more ease and joy in the simple things.

How do you stay inspired?

Connecting with badass women is a huge source of inspiration for me. The Portland community is so open and supportive. I’m grateful for the women in my circle every day. Also any time I can get away from my computer. Spending time outside and walking on the trails or along the Oregon coast helps me hit the reset button.

Loving Lately…

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

A few weeks ago, I picked up the Moisture Renew Mask by January Labs. It’s hydrating without being too thick. This summer I’m traveling a bunch—including co-leading a retreat in Bali—this mask is absolutely coming with me in my suitcase. I’m also so into Outdoor Voices—currently wearing these pants like a uniform. Another favorite item right now is this “Un” Cover-Up from RMS Beauty. I am so impressed that an organic foundation actually works well—even for my 12-hour days filming workout and meditation classes. I don’t even have to reapply it. Last thing: This “I love you so matcha” tote by my friend Alison Wu. I carry it with me in my bag at all times in case I do an unplanned grocery shopping trip.

What are your favorite apps?

I love Voxer. It’s a walkie talkie app that allows you to leave voice messages for friends. I love talking on the phone—or better yet, in person—but that’s not always doable or easy because of crazy schedules. Voxer makes it a breeze to stay in touch, and it’s more personal than text or email.
Another great app to help with communication is Slack. Our team relies on it, and it cuts way down on the volume of emails.
Spotify is another app I use on the daily. Music is a huge part of the online experience, and music drives the workout portion of my classes. My husband is a DJ on the side, and we have so much fun searching for new tunes and putting playlists together.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

Right now, I’m totally inspired by RayRay Ricketts. She’s an intuitive coach, healer, a spiritual activist, and the founder of @lossandfoundxo. One of the things she talks about a lot is grief and how it can be an everyday experience—not just something that you feel when someone you love passes away. We don’t have enough tools to deal with negative emotions and the energies that come along with grief. I respect her work, and I’m aligned with her approach to help people find the joy and connect with their inner resilience during tough times.
Another Instagram account that I’m following closely is @1thatgotawayy by Rachel Elizabeth Cargle. Rachel is an activist, a writer, speaker, and she’s currently attending Columbia University. Her work is dedicated to anti-racism and she calls us all to embrace a feminism that is inclusive and intersectional. As a white woman with boatloads of privilege, she helps me understand issues that people of color face every day and what I can do on my end to lift up and amplify existing efforts and movements.

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

I love smoothies. Especially this Cherry Cacao Be Well Smoothie by Kelly LeVeque. I’m also super into roasted chickpeas. I drizzle avocado oil and then add tons of garlic powder, onion powder, and a dash of chili powder over a sheet of chickpeas and roast them for 35 minutes at 375 degrees. It’s so good! Oh, and I’m obsessed with Cinnamon Maca Almond Butter by Jem Organics. My husband complains about the price, but it’s worth every penny.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

I’m listening to The Feel Good Effect podcast by researcher Robyn Downs. She’s entertaining, she gets to the point, and I always learn something new when I tune in. If you’re curious, I was on her show, and you can listen right here. I also love Dear Sugars with Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond.
And TV? Honestly, I love it. I love Homeland, Insecure, and the creativity and scenery of Westworld.

If your pet could talk, how would they describe you?

I have a beloved cat named Javier. He’d probably tell you that my favorite time of the day is when I’m working at my desk and he sleeps behind my computer with his paws resting on the keyboard. He’d also tell you that he has me trained. He’ll go over to the pantry where his snacks are and just start meowing until I give in and feed him treats.

What woman in history would you love to take to brunch?

Ida B. Wells is definitely on the list. She’s an African-American journalist, abolitionist, and a feminist who led an anti-lynching campaign in the late 1890s. I’d also love to meet Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the author of the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” She wrote about a woman’s descent into madness, and the story reveals how women were treated in the 1890s and also reveals views about mental health at the time. I remember reading that short story in high school and being grateful for the women who have come before me and fought so that I can have a better life.

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

You don’t have to prove yourself to yourself every single day.
I’ve struggled with anxiety pretty much my whole life. A part of me really liked being anxious and on edge because I thought it helped me achieve. Once I learned how to manage the energies of my anxiety, I realized that constantly proving myself to myself doesn’t make me better—it just sucks up my energy and steals my attention from the things that matter the most. Learning how to extend love, kindness, and patience to myself…also learning how to let go of chasing perfection? That’s been transformative and something I’m passionate about sharing with others through my online workout and meditation classes.

What are you really great at (that might embarrass you to admit)?

I have an uncanny ability to rest and watch really good television. TV binges don’t happen often, but when they do? Let’s just say I watched 7 episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale in one day last year. And about a month ago, I watched season 7 of Homeland in 8 days.

What is your bucket list travel destination?

I want to go all over Jordan and Israel. This summer, we’re checking off two of my bucket list items by visiting the Greek islands and Istanbul. I can’t wait!

Tori Simeone Of TorrSim

This week, we’re crushing on Tori Simeone, a professional dancer, Pure Barre instructor, certified holistic health coach, and Tone It Up trainer (just to name a few of her impressive qualifications).
A New York City native, Tori recently moved to Los Angeles to pursue her passion for dance while making it her mission to help others learn how to live their best lives along the way. As a NBA spirit dancer for the Clippers with Broadway, tap, ballroom, and partner dancing experience, Tori is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to moving your body. And we aren’t the only ones who think so…
During a recent Tone It Up tour, the TIU team met Tori and instantly knew she was the perfect fit. As a Studio Tone It Up trainer, Tori is able to share her talent and love of exercise with people all over the world. The best part? You don’t need dance experience to keep up with Tori—she breaks down each movement in a way that’s easy to comprehend while still keeping her workouts fun and getting your heart pumping.
With a busy schedule like Tori’s, it can be difficult to prioritize self-care. We appreciate Tori’s honesty when it comes to finding balance in her life. She regularly shares her favorite ways to practice self-care, like taking herself on solo weekend getaways, relaxing with a face mask, or doing one of her favorite things in the entire world—cooking (while dancing around her kitchen, of course!).
When she’s not in the studio or learning how to care for her plant babes, Tori enjoys creating new dishes (which often feature adaptogens), and she even shares her recipes on her Instagram and her health and travel blog, TorrSim.
We can’t help but feel motivated by Tori’s positive energy, confidence, and desire to inspire others. Keep hustlin’ Tori—we can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next!

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

I have a morning routine that sets me up for a fantastic day. I try to wake up around 8 a.m. each day. I am one of those people that needs her full eight hours of sleep. I drink a large glass of water immediately after opening my eyes to wake up my body, followed by making warm water with lemon. Some mornings I add ACV and cayenne. I meditate and then make a protein-filled breakfast and can start my day.
Each day varies for me; I either start with a hot yoga class down the block from my apartment in downtown LA or I head down to my gym for cardio and a Tone It Up workout. I am a Pure Barre instructor, so on days that I am teaching I will head to the studio early to get in the zone for my clients.
I give myself down time in the middle of the day to let my body get some rest while I work on answering emails, content for my blog, reading a book (usually self-help or nutrition based), or I call a friend from home to catch up.
Each day ends with dinner and downtime at home with my man.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

Cooking and baking healthy, gut-friendly foods is my favorite way to show myself some love. I will light candles, blast music, and dance around my kitchen while I create fun new recipes. I have so much fun doing this. It is not an obligation, no one pays me for it, and that is why I can enjoy it so much and have a blast while doing so!
At night, I love to indulge in homemade face masks often throughout the week.

How do you stay inspired?

I am constantly reminding myself of my goals. Whether it is by writing them out daily, taking a look at my vision board, or scrolling through posts I have saved on Instagram. This motivates me to keep moving forward and reminds me why I am making the choices I am making. Some days are harder than others, that is just natural, but by keeping my goals my top priority it makes it so much easier to keep my momentum.
Listening to my intuition is important as well. I have learned to say no to the things that do not serve me. By placing my time and energy into the things that light me up, I have no choice but to be inspired. When you work from this place of authenticity, you wind up inspiring the people around you as well!

Loving Lately…

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

Kopari Beauty Products, Vered Botanicals, and Ilia Beauty are my current favorites. All of these are kind to your skin with clean, non-toxic ingredients.
I also love the women that are behind each one of these companies. Supporting brands that are made with love from the very beginning is something I love.

What are your favorite apps?

The Calm meditation app is my number one favorite. Yes, I am ranking it higher than Instagram.
Instagram takes a close second though.
MyFLO is another one of my faves. This is a period-tracking app made by the incredible Alisa Vitti geared towards helping women during every phase of their cycle—not just menstrual. It shows which food is best during the phase you are in, which exercise is best, and even shows what your mental and sexual state are. Highly recommend this app!

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

@katrinascott and @karenadawn might be girl bosses but they will always be #lifegoals.
@earthyandy is my #familygoals and #foodgoals—her life in Hawaii looks amazing and the food she has available to eat is my dream! @alison__wu of #WuHaus is #aestheticgoals for sure.

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

Almond butter and berries or veggies with any homemade dipping sauce that I have ready.
Sometimes I go for a sliced avocado with tomato topped with salt and pepper—so yummy!

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Reading: Go With Your Gut by Robyn Youkilis, The Food Therapist by Shira Lenchewski, WomanCode by Alisa Vitti, and House of Plants by Rose Ray and Caro Langston.
Watching: Billions, This Is Us, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—and I will admit that I still watch Grey’s Anatomy.
Listening: Lana Del Reyalways. I have been mostly into podcasts while I walk and drive though. Faves are Let It Out, The Armchair Expert, Almost 30, The Balanced Blonde, and mindbodygreen.

If your pet could talk, how would they describe you?

I don’t have any pets (yet), but if my plants could talk they would most likely say, “She doesn’t know what she’s doing, but she tries really hard!”
Still learning how to keep my plants alive and thriving! They would also say I’m goofy, quirky, I talk too much, and I love dancing around to music all day long.

What woman in history would you love to take to brunch?

Zelda Fitzgerald. She was a wild child in a time when women didn’t usually come out of their shell or disobey the rules. As the first ever flapper girl, a writer, and an artist, she sounds so interesting, and I would love to sit down with her and ask her about the 1920s.

What’s your coffee order?

I make my own matcha latte at home using an array of adaptogens and collagen, or I grind Modern Times coffee beans and make a cold brew with similar ingredients.

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

What is for you will always come to you at the time that is right in your life. The universe will always lead you to the right path, just give it time. Maybe someone else got the thing you thought you wanted, that’s okay! Be happy for them! Your thing is on its way to you, and it is yours and no one else’s to take.

10 Dollar Baby: My First Boxing Class Experience

Ever since I was a young tomboy who routinely wore oversized soccer shorts, I’ve always felt an urge to punch things during frustrating situations or periods of anger. Yes, I am well aware that this makes me sound aggressive, but I’ve never punched a human being and am generally well mannered. My only victims have been bedroom walls, pillows, and couch cushions, occasionally resulting in hand pain that I instantly regret as embarrassment from my rage and tantruming washes over me.
After my boyfriend witnessed one of my recent pillow-punching sprees, he suggested that I try a boxing class (or 20) as a new venue for releasing my negative energy. If I enjoyed throwing punches so much, I might as well be hitting a bag with gloves on and optimizing my workout, he reasoned. This seemed like a natural fit for me, so I enrolled in my first TITLE boxing class, which was my favorite price: free.
Since I’m not the cardio queen I once was, I opted for the 30-minute evening class on a Friday after work. After a day filled with meetings and a gnarly commute, I was more than ready to let my fists fly.
The moment I pulled into the parking lot, however, I couldn’t help but feel slightly intimidated. Would there be real boxers here? Would I look like a total weakling? Could I even move the bag with one of my punches?
After a couple minutes of worrying, I called my ultimate ride-or-die chick, my momma, to ask her if I should even walk inside. “You’ll feel so much better after you take this class. You know you will,” she assured me confidently. As the saying goes, momma knows best. Her words fueled my fire as I entered the boxing gym for the first time.
Since this was my first boxing class, I needed to learn how to properly wrap my hands to support my wrists and prevent any broken bones. I had purchased wraps on Amazon prior to class, but most boxing gyms, including TITLE, provide wraps for purchase.
After meeting my instructor, she showed me how to properly wrap my hands and wrists, taught me the basic punches that would be used during class (jab, cross, hook, and uppercut) and gave me a pair of boxing gloves still wet with sweat from another human being.
I cannot lie…the sweaty gloves grossed me out. I immediately grabbed some disinfectant wipes that were hanging on the wall and began wiping down the inside of each glove. I know a badass boxer probably wouldn’t be fazed by this, but I’m a newbie and I couldn’t ignore it.
The class began with 10 minutes of cardio to warm up and after about five minutes of non-stop action, my face was as red as a cherry tomato. This warm-up was definitely not for the faint of heart since it involved continuous movement. One moment we were sprinting, then doing jumping jacks, bear crawls, burpees, and beyond. I could tell my instructor was going to push me, and I enjoyed the challenge.
Following the cardio portion of class, we did four consecutive three-minute boxing rounds—throwing different combinations of punches and doing footwork around the bag. After the first two rounds, I realized what a full-body workout boxing can be and gained a new respect for those who pursue this sport on a competitive level. I can assure you, boxing is way harder than it looks on television! I finished all four rounds and loved being able to punch the bag as hard as I possibly could without experiencing pain in my hands, or the embarrassment of punching inanimate objects in my home.
The ass kicking—I mean, workout—ended with seven minutes of ab exercises using medicine balls and a healthy amount of glute bridges, which got my buns burning. I love doing ab exercises and my yoga practice definitely came into play here, making this the easiest portion of the class for me by a landslide. I was extremely glad that I chose to start with the 30-minute class because I truthfully don’t believe that I could have worked out at this level for 60 to 75 minutes.
Drenched in sweat with my baby biceps popping for the world to see, I headed home to shower off. It was when I first raised my arms to lather my shampoo that reality struck: I’m gonna be sore tomorrow. My body was not deceiving me, and my arms (mainly the outside of my biceps and forearms) were sore in places that I didn’t know existed. I don’t want to sound dramatic—I was still able to raise my arms to get dressed and style my hair—but I could definitely feel the impact of the workout on my upper body for the next two days.
Overall, my first boxing experience was a great stress-reliever and a fantastic full-body workout. My personal recommendations for anyone who is considering trying boxing for the first time are to hydrate properly before and after class, focus on your breath during your punches, and ask someone knowledgeable at the gym or studio you choose to teach you how to wrap your hands and wrists properly to avoid injury. Don’t be afraid to start with a shorter class and work your way up. Happy hitting!

1st Phorm Elite Athlete Jenna Fail

Looking at her now, it’s difficult to envision that Jenna Fail was once a 20-year-old housewife who felt unfulfilled and unmotivated, but she’ll be the first to tell you that a life of self-doubt and anxiety was once her reality. That is, until she attended a meet-and-greet event for bodybuilder Jay Cutler with her husband, Chris.
As she entered the event, Jenna couldn’t help but notice the women in attendance who wore their crop tops confidently–showing off their hard-earned physiques. It was right then and there that Jenna decided she would look like those women one day, and the course of her life changed forever.
As she began training, Jenna realized that she had the power not only to shape her body, but also her mind. Her newfound self-confidence permeated into all aspects of her life.
Just six years after that meet and greet, Jenna is a 4x NPC National Qualifier, 1st Phorm Elite Athlete and Elite Trainer, and the 1st Phorm 2017 Athlete of the Year. Despite having earned her success, Jenna is still as humble and kind as ever with a smile that can light up any room. She knows firsthand that if you change your mindset, you can change your life, and she’s made it a priority to share her journey to help others realize their worth and personal power.
Jenna’s journey hasn’t been an easy one, especially after she and her husband lost everything they owned, including their beloved pets Moose and Rocky, to a tragic house fire in 2017. As someone who has followed Jenna on social media for a couple of years now, I’ll never forget reading her Instagram post last March as tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn’t even begin to fathom her pain and heartbreak, yet Jenna, who was actually experiencing the loss, kept looking for light and positivity and remained grateful, which only caused me to admire her more.
While Jenna’s physical strength is undeniable, it’s her mental fortitude that impresses us the most. “I can tell you the most beautiful stories out of tragedies in my life only because I look for the good. The story never changed, only my perception & willingness to make something positive out of a negative,” she shared on Instagram.
Jenna is a constant reminder that things aren’t always as bad as they seem and that positivity and kindness can go a long way. If you’re feeling unfulfilled and are looking to change your life, I suggest looking to Jenna for inspiration. Don’t be afraid to start today, even if it’s just a small step!

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

My daily routine varies day to day, but typically it’s something like: Wake up. Love on my animals a bit before getting out of bed. I keep my “Jesus Calling” devotional by my bedside and usually read my page before getting up. Then I prepare breakfast and have my coffee. I try to relax and give myself a quiet few minutes before jumping into work, but it never fails that I drink my coffee cold because I’ll answer just this one email while my eggs cook, which turns into many emails, and before I know it, iced coffee! Somedays I tell myself, “Jenna, you will finish this coffee hot this morning!” Goals!
From there, I continue on with emails, messages, and my Team Fail group while planning what I want to talk about or share on social media that day. After a few hours, I’ll eat again and then do my hair and makeup, which I really enjoy! My first career was working as a cosmetologist, so hair and makeup is something I always enjoy! It’s also a little time that I can shut off work and solely focus on something else. From there I run whatever errands I have to do that day.
On many days, I make it a point to stop by our local antique–salvage shop. I love to restore old furniture and buy unique pieces. When shopping for things like that, you have to be on the lookout regularly because they come and go so fast! Right now my current project is an old church pew I’m restoring for our foyer!
From there, if my husband is off work, we may spend a while getting some different content—pictures, videos, et cetera. Typically we do that at least once a week.
I spend about an hour to an hour and a half in the gym five days a week. Sometimes I go early, sometimes late. It just depends on my work load and my husband’s work schedule.
In the evenings, me and my husband catch up on how our day went and usually relax with something on TV. No phone! Right now we are into American Idol. We love having a scheduled program to watch because in a way to gives us a scheduled time to sit and relax together. America’s Got Talent and American Horror Story are a few of our other faves! Luckily all these shows seem to be pretty well spaced out in the year.
Then it’s time for bed! My schedule varies greatly due to travel and whatnot, but on any relaxed, normal day, this is about it. Nothing too exciting!

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

Writing, keeping a healthy diet, eating and enjoying the occasional donut, soaking in the tub, exercising, reflecting, devotion.

How do you stay inspired?

I stay inspired by the fact that we are all here for such a short amount of time. For many that’s scary, but for me, it easily keeps me in the “why not just go for it” mindset.

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

Hands down 1st Phorm’s Opti-Greens 50! I am not the best at getting in enough vegetables each day, so having a quality product to ensure I’m giving my body all it needs to function and feel its best is amazing!

What are your favorite apps?

I am awful with apps. I am not technology savvy! I use the basic socials, and that’s about it.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

My feed its typically full of my teammates, which I love! I feed off their positive energy and hard work. I believe your social feed should be only things that are positive for you. After all, you are seeing it all day, and you become whatever you surround yourself with. I also follow many animal pages for a laugh and smile throughout my day!

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Always listening to the MFCEO Project podcast and Food In Session podcast. They are amazing! I’m currently looking for a good book.
I’ve been hooked on watching Trading Spaces since it came back! TLC has been playing all the old episodes, and I’ve been binge watching! I also religiously watch the Baking Championships on Food Network, and Teen Mom.

If your pet could talk, how would they describe you?

Weird for sure. I read an article that said your cats feel loved if you sing them little songs that rhyme with their name. So, yeah, me and my husband sing little songs every day that we try and rhyme with Bug and Darla. The songs never make sense! That article was definitely someone playing a joke, and here I am—lookin’ like a fool! Geez!

What would the title of your autobiography be?

Life Goes On

What woman in history would you love to take to brunch?

Marilyn Monroe!

Would you rather explore space or the ocean? Why?

The ocean intrigues me more. I feel like there’s a bigger variety to see. Can you believe that of all the books and exploring we’ve done, 95 percent of the ocean remains unexplored? Thats crazy! It’s a very cool thought, but also pretty scary! What’s in there?!

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

When I was growing up, my mom always said, “Suck it up and tough it out!” When I was little, I didn’t like when she said that. I just wanted to whine, but now as an adult I see how true it is. It’s nice for “Shut up and do the work.”

Depressed By Debris: What Happened When I Went Plogging For The First Time

It’s not uncommon to see gray and dreary skies for days on end during the winter months and on into early spring, especially if you reside in the Midwest. After a week filled with cold, rainy weather, a Sunday with clear skies and temperatures in the high 40s left me feeling more motivated than ever to head outdoors and stretch my legs.
Since my partner and I were both feeling stir crazy, tired of Entourage reruns (sorry, Vince), and eager to breathe fresh air, we chose to start our rain-free Sunday with a light jog around the track at the middle school directly across the street from our home.
It was only 35 degrees at this point, but we were determined to take advantage of our day off. Before we left our house, I decided that this would be a great opportunity for me to try plogging for the first time. In case you aren’t familiar, plogging is a Swedish trend that combines physical exercise in the form of running or jogging with picking up litter in the surrounding area.
I wore one sanitary glove and one winter glove (because 35 degrees is ice cold to my native Texan bones) and brought a small trash bag with us so that I could pick up garbage around the middle school track and soccer fields during our jog.
The amount of plastic products, duct tape, and cigarette butts that I noticed only a few paces into our workout was eye opening. Despite the fact that our route was less than a mile round trip, my small trash bag was almost completely full as we neared the end.
plogging 1
I tried to pick up as much litter as I possibly could, but I’m certain that I missed some along the way, including one Styrofoam cup that had been thrown behind a fence with a No Trespassing sign.
One of the most disheartening realizations of my first plogging experience was the fact that there were trash cans distributed throughout the school property in convenient locations near the track, soccer fields, and parking lot—yet some people had still made the conscious decision to throw their garbage on the grass instead of taking a few extra steps to ensure their waste made it to the trash receptacle or recycling bin.
After about 20 minutes of plogging, my partner and I returned home with a heavy trash bag and even heavier hearts.
As the day warmed up, we decided to take our dog to a local park for plogging round two. This was about a two-mile journey round trip. My boyfriend held our dog’s leash while I jogged along beside them and picked up trash along the path leading to and from the park and within the park itself. Without prompting, my partner began plogging with me, which warmed my heart.
During our second plogging adventure, we saw at least seven different people and I couldn’t help but wonder how much cleaner the park and surrounding area would be if everyone who used the space took responsibility for the litter they brought into the area or made the effort to pick up and dispose of just one piece of trash before leaving the park.
As we made our way back home, I was relieved by how light this trash bag felt in comparison to our morning plog at the middle school and how clean the park had been overall. My sense of relief came too soon, however, and as we neared our home my boyfriend spotted a full string of broken Christmas lights in some tall grass along the side of the road. It’s currently late March, so seeing those sitting there definitely caught our attention and the rubbish-filled reality of the day sank in yet again.
plogging 2
Although we went to two different locations in our suburban area, they did share one major similarity. Both locations had public containers for trash and recycling—yet there was still waste on the ground in the form of plastic products, cigarette butts, candy wrappers, duct tape, and more.
From an environmental perspective, this experience was a bit discouraging considering the amount of waste I discovered in such a short amount of time. With that being said, my first plogging experience did have some positive aspects.
First and foremost, I was able to give back to my local community by making these shared spaces more sanitary both for myself and others by properly disposing of waste. Secondly, this was a surprisingly wonderful workout! Not only was I reaping the cardio benefits from jogging, but I was also feeling that leg and booty burn from frequently squatting down to pick up garbage.
Once we returned home, I documented my trash collections and disposed of the waste and recycling appropriately. I also washed my hands twice (for those of you who, like me, are concerned about germs and bacteria).
I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and pride after plogging and will make a continued effort to pick up litter during my future after-work jogs and weekend hiking adventures. Later in the evening, my partner commented that my actions had motivated him to pick up trash at the park, sharing that it felt good to give back to the natural world we’re able to enjoy.
We can’t be 100 percent eco-friendly at all times (and I certainly don’t claim to be), but I would encourage you to go plogging for yourself and see how much trash you collect along the way.
If you don’t have time to plog, I challenge you to start small—pick up that receipt in the parking lot out outside of your office building instead of walking past and rinse or recycle that empty water bottle in the bush at your local playground instead of kicking it like a soccer ball. Who knows, your effort just might motivate someone else to start their own plogging adventure.
You’ve seen my plogging pics, now I’d love to see yours. Share your plogging pile with me by tagging @itsthehealthyway on Instagram.

Healthy Her Way: Remy Park Of Veggiekins

As a lover of all things plant related, I can’t help but crush on this week’s Healthy Her Way feature, Remy Park, as she takes the term plant lady to a whole new level. In addition to being a talented food photographer and recipe developer, Remy is also a wellness coach (and yoga instructor in training).
On her Instagram, which is filled with incredible photos of houseplants that often leave me green with envy, Remy also shares her plant-powered vegan and gluten-free recipes complemented by colorful food photography.
Although Remy’s thoughtfully curated blog, Veggiekins, initially started as a personal food accountability journal intended for select eyes only, it has since grown into a stunning website that seamlessly shatters stigmas about vegan eating. For Remy, becoming a vegan wasn’t a temporary fix or fad diet—it’s a way of life. It’s truly impressive to see how Remy has turned her plant passion into an inspiring career, especially considering she’s still in her early twenties.
If you’ve ever pondered over the question What the heck can vegans eat?, prepare to be amazed by Remy’s flavorful creations and personal insights regarding how her plant friends help her entire being.
Living a vegan lifestyle isn’t for the faint of heart, and Remy is candid about the fact that she initially struggled with feeling hypocritical discussing vegan eating while owning clothes, beauty products, and household items that contained toxic ingredients and weren’t vegan-friendly. As a result of this realization, she has since become committed to finding non-toxic items for her home and body while sharing her knowledge and favorite finds with fellow (and aspiring) plant enthusiasts along the way.
Remy’s dedication is admirable, and we’re blown away by her knowledge on the topics of clean beauty, vegan and ethical fashion, and green living.
For those of you who love recipe videos as much as we do, Remy also has a YouTube channel that she uses to share creative recipe videos and more personal vlog content, such as Q+A sessions that allow her followers to learn more about the brilliant mind behind Veggiekins.
The vlog that really broke the mold for us was when Remy opened up about her struggles with anorexia and OCD. Remy is extremely genuine and raw, stating, “If this helps one person then it’s worth it.” We can’t help but feel inspired by Remy’s compassion and desire to help others live their best life.
Keep spreading love and light, Remy! “Magic goes where intention flows.”

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

On my best day I wake up around 5 a.m., start my morning with a liter of warm lemon water, take my vitamins, and do a quick stretch if I’m pressed for time or ideally a quick 20 to 30 minute yoga flow just to get the blood pumping. I am more of a morning workout person, so I’ll either head to the gym or take a workout class. My favorite ones lately are Sculpt at Corepower Yoga, classic SoulCycle, or an interval class.
I’ll then eat breakfast, typically a smoothie or something sweet because I have the worst sweet tooth ever! I respond to emails in the morning, then move on to recipe development and food photography. I love morning light and using natural light so I typically try to wrap up by about 12 to 1 p.m. I usually have a matcha latte in the afternoon as a pick-me-up and typically a gigantic, colorful salad for lunch.
In the afternoon, I usually focus more on editing content, for example blog posts, photo editing, video editing, and client work. If I have errands or events to attend that day, I’ll typically be out and about wearing athleisure—most days! In the early evening, if I can, I like to have my dinner pre-prepped. I typically don’t take photos of my dinner past the afternoon because of light, so what I’ll usually do is make it in advance and toss it in to the fridge or freezer to reheat for dinner.
I try to spend at least 10 to 15 minutes outside and disconnected so an after-dinner walk is my favorite way to wind down. I light candles, get the diffuser going and then I wrap up emails once more and call it a night! Although I’m an early riser, I’m in bed between 11 and 1 a.m. most days.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

My favorite way is to disconnect. Because social media and technology are so integrated into what I do, it can be deceiving sometimes and it may feel like I’m not working when in reality, I still am! It also allows me to check in with my feelings, energy levels, and just recenter myself. I also try to prioritize movement each day and time outside. Even on my busiest days, I’ll try to fit in a workout or at the very least a walk outside to make sure I get movement and sunshine in.

How do you stay inspired?

I actually stay inspired by disconnecting. I find myself stuck in a rut if I’m scrolling through social media for inspiration. I end up drawn to whatever it is everyone else is doing so instead I spend time disconnected, out in nature, and I try to stay inspired by colors, seasons, and nature.

Loving Lately…

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

I’ve recently been hooked on cashew butter, though I was previously a die-hard almond butter fan. I’ve also discovered a new brand of almond butter from Better Almond Butter which is raw, unpasteurized marcona almond butter (heaven!).
I’ve also been really loving Snow Monkey ice cream, which is a superfood infused, gluten free, and vegan high-protein ice cream developed by athletes. It’s the cleanest vegan ice cream I’ve found on the market that still tastes delicious.
I’ve also been loving Food Huggers, which are food savers that eliminate the need to use plastic food storage bags and saran wrap. They keep my avocado halves fresh, and same goes for my lemon and lime halves! In the beauty and skin department, I’ve been really loving the Moon Fruit night cream by Herbivore Botanicals—a vegan and natural brand—as well as the Vitamin C probiotic face polish by Osea. My go-to body product is still the Mount Airy body serum by Franklin and Whitman. I’ve also rediscovered my love for my inspiralizer!

What are your favorite apps?

Some of my favorite apps are SnapSeed for quick phone photo editing, the MyFlO app—this one is a recent love and gamechanger: It provides recommendations for everything from the kinds of workouts you should do to the kinds of foods you should eat to support the current phase you are in of your menstrual cycle and has a really comprehensive symptom tracking system.
Todoist is my all-time favorite app because it syncs to my laptop and is how I organize and stay on top of tasks. I also love Sleep++, and not going to lie, but my sweetgreen app gets a good workout. I also love using the HappyCow app to find vegan food spots around me when I travel. Lastly, I am recently transitioning over to using AirTable for spreadsheets, lists, etc. because it’s so versatile.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

I love @floretflower for general flower inspo and @loriastern for floral food inspo—big into florals in my food!—@glowmaven for wellness, @elllenfisher for incredible tropical living inspiration and the sweetest family shares—it feels like watching a TV show because I’m so invested in her sweet family!—@cbquality for general badassery and boss lady inspiration, @stayandwander for travel inspiration, @spiritdaughter for astrology, @malloryonthemoon for vibrant lifestyle inspo, and @matthewkenneycuisine for gorgeous plating and vibrant plants!

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

My go-to sweet snack would have to be green apple slices and almond butter or a baked good with beans in it, like chickpea cookie dough or black bean brownies! If I’m feeling savory, I love having raw veggies with hummus or a super quick avocado toast on gluten-free bread!

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Watching: One of the only shows I’ve kept up to date with is Grey’s Anatomy. I also love Broad City and need to catch up on Black Mirror Season 4. I recently watched the movie Wonder, which was one of my favorite movies this year, though it is a children’s movie.

What is your bucket list travel destination?

I’ve been really wanting to visit Egypt for the longest time. I think it’s a really beautiful destination and have heard great things from friends about not only the sights but also the culture and the history!

What superpower would you like to have?

I wish I could be in two places at once! I have a hard time saying no sometimes, and I have a particularly hard time overbooking myself, so if I could be in two places at once, most of my problems would be nonexistent. Also, I could be eating Pressed Juicery freeze while working out simultaneously. Seems like a good combination to me!

What’s your coffee order?

I typically don’t drink coffee, but my go-to drink at a cafe is usually a matcha latte unsweetened and made with either almond or cashew milk. If I make it at home, I’ll add a little vanilla bean and usually maca or another adaptogen.

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

“Let your past make you better, not bitter.” I have always loved this quote and try to live by it.
