How Young Is Too Young For Makeup? From The Lipstick Effect To The Neurosis Of Glamor, There’s A Lot To Consider

Playing dress-up isn’t an uncommon activity for children of all ages, but at what point does playing pretend—and, specifically, applying and wearing makeup—become too adult of a pastime for kids who are still developing both physically and emotionally?
For some parents, that can be a difficult question to ponder, while for others, a definitive answer about how young is too young for makeup is clear.

On the one hand, some will argue that there’s no harm in letting a child wear a little blush around the house or lip gloss to the grocery store. “It’s just for fun,” a parent might say. “It makes my kid happy and doesn’t hurt anyone.”
Others, however, contend that espousing cosmetics for kids sends a negative message about self-worth by putting too much emphasis on outer beauty at too early an age. Followers of this school of thought believe makeup equals over-sexualization and that it can have dangerous long-term effects.
[pullquote align=”center”]Over half of 12- to 14-year-olds use mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and eyebrow pencils. And 45 percent of that same group of children use foundation and concealer products.[/pullquote]
Both arguments have merit, of course, and many will tell you it’s a question with no wrong answers. Still sorting out your own view on the subject? Here’s what two moms and two mental-health professionals have to say.

How young is too young?

A study by marketing intelligence agency Mintel found that 80 percent of 9- to 11-year-olds in the U.S. use some form of beauty and personal care products. More specifically, over half of 12- to 14-year-olds use mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and eyebrow pencils. And 45 percent of that same group of children use foundation and concealer products.

These percentages include both boys and girls in those age ranges. And while most parents are less likely to worry about their sons’ relationships with cosmetic products, the study goes on to note that 69 percent of boys in the same age range use products including facial cleansers, cologne, lip moisturizers, and hair styling mousses, gels, and creams.
Of course, makeup usage tends to elicit more raised eyebrows than cleansers, lip care, and hair styling products, maybe because it’s associated with altering one’s appearance—or maybe because cosmetic products are more gendered than other personal care products.

According to Alan E. Kazdin, Sterling Professor of psychology and professor of child psychiatry at Yale University, there is no magic age at which a child should or should not wear makeup.
[pullquote align=”center”]“Oftentimes in our culture, wearing makeup is used as a way to enhance sex appeal. …I think this is what we fear most as parents about sharing makeup with children.”
—Erick Kenneth French, LCSW[/pullquote]
“There are several factors that dictate when a child begins to wear makeup, including a culture, a parent’s socioeconomic status, a child’s peers—it’s multi-determined,” says Kazdin. “There’s no age that you can say, ‘Okay, buy them everything.’”
This resonates with Erick Kenneth French, a licensed clinical social worker and author of the graphic novel Iphelia: Awakening the Gift of Feeling, who challenges us to consider that “wearing makeup can mean different things in different cultures,” i.e., it’s not necessarily all about selfies and Sephora.
Having spent time in India and a local Indian community here in St. Louis, I feel that makeup and dress can be worn for spiritually devotional purposes,” he shares. “In many cultures in the east—India, Nepal, Pakistan—wearing eyeliner can be a way of protecting the eyes of a child from the sun, protecting the child from negative spiritual influences such as ‘the evil eye,’ and drawing attention to the eyes rather than just one’s physical form.”

As our communities become increasingly multicultural, it’s worth keeping in mind that our children’s peers will have different experiences with cosmetics that are uniquely influenced by their own families of origin.
“The most important thing to consider when sharing any activity with your children is what you’re being and what you’re teaching them to be when they engage in the activity,” French says. “In the case of makeup, your child’s experience of what you are being when you wear makeup yourself will strongly impact what it means to wear makeup for themselves.”
He also shares an anecdote from his practice that’s apt to stir up a lot of feeling for adults on either side of the fence:

Just the other day, I had couple in my office describing a recurrent argument about this that has escalated over time. The mother was allowing her 6-year-old daughter and a friend who was over to put makeup on. When the husband came home from work and saw them, he felt triggered and threatened to leave his wife if she didn’t have his daughter remove the makeup before leaving the house.

Why is makeup so triggering—even for dads?

“In some subcultures in this country, wearing makeup simply means putting yourself together and being presentable as a woman,” says French. “But oftentimes in our culture, wearing makeup is used as a way to enhance sex appeal and perhaps further objectify oneself so as to increase magnetism and power over others. I think this is what we fear most as parents about sharing makeup with children.”

However a parent feels, Kazdin says it can be a challenge for them to balance their preferences and ideals with a realistic view of how their child will be received by their peers and whatever community they’re being raised in.
Kazdin understands why parents might dig their heels in when it comes to tattoos and piercings, acknowledging that they’re “more enduring in terms of impact,” but says that if a child “wears torn jeans and a punk orange hairdo, a parent should probably yield to that because that style is going to drop off and go away.”
HealthyWay

He encourages parents not to take a firm yes or no stance when it comes to children wearing makeup, but rather to find a happy medium that allows them to wear a certain amount of makeup in a controlled environment.
“We are all looking for the fine line of ‘This age is okay to wear makeup’ and ‘This is the age when it’s not okay,’” says Kazdin. “But the parent has to be thoughtful and realistic about it while holding up their standards and helping their kid navigate the pressures of childhood.”

A “Guerilla Feminist” View on Makeup (and Heels)

Katia Grubisic, a mom of two daughters ages 1 and 3, is acutely aware that a child’s view of themselves and how they fit into the outside world starts an early age.
“Gendering is so prevalent and can be so insidious for both girls and boys,” says Grubisic, who is a self-described “guerrilla feminist” mom. “I’d like my children to grow up with an open field that includes both makeup and fire trucks. As long as society is pitching one relentlessly over the other, I try my best to balance the equation.”
[pullquote align=”center”]At least one in five girls ages 8 to 18 has negative feelings about themselves when they are not wearing makeup.[/pullquote]
In Grubisic’s mind, age 13—about the time her daughters will start high school—is when she feels it’s appropriate for them to start wearing makeup in addition to being trusted with other more grown-up privileges, like having a cell phone and taking public transportation alone.
Grubisic, who lives in Montreal, says she wasn’t allowed to wear makeup as a child, and it wasn’t something she pined to do or felt like she was missing out on.
“I always got my bangs curled on photo day, but that was about the extent of girliness,” she says. “I don’t think I quite knew I was a girl, or rather that there were expectations or restrictions [on dress and appearance that had to do with gender] until I was maybe 10.”
Grubisic says she doesn’t keep her daughters from engaging in certain “girly” inclinations here and there. Recently, she was attending a wedding with her daughters when her toddler wanted to wear her heels.

“I explained to her that she could try them on, but that they were made for mommy’s feet,” she says. “Sure enough, she ran around and promptly fell.”
This is the exact style of parenting that Kazdin says is important for the healthy development of young children: letting them learn for themselves without definitively saying no.
“If a child wears makeup in the house, a parent may think it’s all downhill from there,” Kazdin says. “Well, it’s usually quite the opposite of that slippery slope. Once a parent compromises, it makes it easier to control the other situations.”

Taking A More Laid-Back Approach

Mary Sauer, who lives in Missouri, is taking a more laid-back approach to letting her daughters wear makeup. Sauer says she doesn’t remember the first time her daughters, ages 4 and 6, began to play with and wear her cosmetic products.

HealthyWay

“They typically wear makeup around the house, but I don’t really make a big deal about it if we happen to go out,” says Sauer, whose daughters really only ever ask to wear lip gloss or eyeshadow. “One time, my daughter asked to wear makeup to church, and I did say no to that, mostly because I was worried about judgment—although when we are out in public and they are wearing makeup, no one has ever said anything to me about it.”
Sauer lets her two daughters explore their feminine side without restrictions.
“My girls have their own nail polish and lip gloss, but they also wear mine occasionally,” she says. “I’m typically involved in the play, mostly because I like my makeup and don’t want it ruined.”
[pullquote align=”center”]“If whatever form of makeup gives you a feeling of being more yourself, then I think it can be a good thing. But really knowing that to be true for one’s self can require a great deal of honesty and introspection.”
—Erick Kenneth French, LCSW[/pullquote]
Kazdin says this type of parental involvement is helpful to the development of young minds—and encourages moms and dads to get in on the fun.
“Maybe the child can put lipstick on the mom as she’s getting dressed one day,” he says. “Yeah, it will all have to be taken off because it will be a mess, but that can be a fun Saturday morning.”
Parents should feel like they can step in and say no to make up if they are concerned, according to Kazdin.
HealthyWay
istock.com/PeopleImages

“How they say no is very important,” he says. “Parents should try to accommodate their children’s interest in makeup and find a creative and controlled way to let their child take part in makeup play.”
Sauer says letting her girls dabble in makeup isn’t something she holds in high regard, but she doesn’t feel it’s important to keep her children away from it, either.
“I don’t make a big deal out of it,” says Sauer. “I feel like making it a sacred event that happens at 13 or 16—whatever age—gives makeup way more power.”

Makeup: A threat to self-esteem, or just the boost we need?

Little kids wearing makeup or putting it on mom or dad can be cute, but tweens and teens wearing makeup on the regular can feel like another thing entirely, especially when it involves them emulating (and sometimes even looking like) adults.
Are the impacts of makeup usage at this age really as negative as they can appear? The answer is complicated. In a study conducted by The Renfrew Center Foundation, researchers found that at least one in five girls ages 8 to 18 has negative feelings about themselves when they are not wearing makeup.

HealthyWay
istock.com/mediaphotos

Another study published by Harvard University explored the possibility that makeup can impact female students’ performance in the classroom. The study found that participants who wore makeup outperformed those who did not—researchers dubbed this “the lipstick effect.” That said, it’s important to note that participants were college students, not middle or high schoolers.
French says he’s not familiar with these studies but that he is sure some young girls feel better about themselves “because wearing makeup deters any subtle shaming that might come from their culturally conditioned peers.”
“If narcissism and the neurosis of glamor and comparison was not such a predominant force in our culture, then it wouldn’t be a thing,” he says. His thoughts on the lipstick effect? “The answer probably isn’t more makeup.”
“The answer is healing the pervasive anxiety that we have been conditioned with since childhood, which is driving these neuroses,” French says.
“All that said,” he continues, “I think there is also something to be said for caring for yourself and striving to present yourself to the world in a way that accurately represents how you want to be as your true self. If whatever form of makeup gives you a feeling of being more yourself, then I think it can be a good thing. But really knowing that to be true for one’s self can require a great deal of honesty and introspection.”

If a child is curious about makeup play, Kazdin encourages parents to let them explore without scrutinizing their desires. Above all, finding a common ground between parent and child when it comes to when and where the child is allowed to wear makeup will cultivate a healthy and productive discussion. Kazdin says the last thing any parent should do is try to shut down the situation without finding a happy medium.
“See if there is a way to compromise so the situation fits in with your child’s life,” says Kazdin. “There is probably not a 3-year-old group that’s wearing endless makeup, but there are probably very few 18-year-olds who aren’t wearing even just a little mascara. Parents have to be flexible and more sensitive to their individual child—and not be too rigid or come down harshly on the child for their desires to wear makeup and fit in with society.”
Finally, French acknowledges that judgment and comparison can surface for kids and adults alike as families define their values as they relate to makeup, ways of dress, et cetera: “Instilling a family value of non-judgment is always good, but teaching children to pay attention to their feelings so they can be conscious of what they are being is even better.”
HealthyWay
Sai De Silva

“I believe the antidote to judgment or preventing the tendency to shame others”—for example, a peer who wears a lot of makeup or other parents whose makeup rules confound us—“is to really strive to stay honest with one’s self and keep one’s eyes fixed on one’s own struggle.”
He says that when we pay attention to our feelings and focus on maintaining our own overall wellbeing, we are “less likely to project our shortcomings onto others and instead feel compassion and understanding about whatever we perceive another’s confusion or struggle to be.”
Makeup or no makeup, “the key is to be conscious of what you’re striving to be when you dress yourself up,” says French.
Sauer thinks that parents shouldn’t worry so much about what others think.
“At the end of the day, you know your child best and need to do what feels right to you as a parent,” says Sauer. “I think that if you want your kids to have a healthy relationship with makeup, the first step is modeling the same thing. If you’re really uptight about how you look, that is what they are going to pick up on, not the rules you set for them.”

12 Haircare Mistakes You’re Probably Making (And What To Do Instead)

Bad hair days happen to everyone from time to time. We’ve all had that cowlick that just won’t go down, waves or curls that turn to frizz as soon as we walk outside, split ends that stick out of braids, or strands that have a dull appearance. Locks that look less than their best certainly don’t boost our confidence, but the problem usually goes away the next day.

But what if your bad hair days start to happen every day? If it seems like no matter what you do, you just can’t get your hair to look shiny and beautiful, you might want to start taking a hard look at your haircare routine. Something as simple as using the wrong brush for your hair type or damaging your hair with heat when you blow-dry could actually be wreaking havoc on the condition of your mane. They’re easy mistakes to make—but they can have long-lasting consequences on your tresses.

So before you give up entirely and resign yourself to a lifetime of bad hair days, consider exactly how you’re treating your hair and what you can do to improve it. Here are some of the most common haircare mistakes to avoid (and the things you should do instead); along with them are some products that’ll help you make the right choice—they’re just a click (or tap) away.

Haircare Mistake No. 1: You use products loaded with harsh chemicals.

Do you pick up the cheapest bottles of shampoo and conditioner from the drug store? While there’s nothing wrong with trying to save a buck or two, many of these ultra-cheap haircare products (and even some of their more expensive counterparts) are loaded with harsh chemicals that can damage your hair.

Not every ingredient with a long name is bad for your hair, but there are a few to watch out for. Namely, sulfates. These are chemicals that do a really great job cleaning your hair. They’re so good at what they do, though, that they often strip your hair’s natural oils away in the process. Look for bottles that say “sulfate-free,” and avoid common sulfate ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, to keep your hair clean and gorgeous.

Haircare Mistake No. 2: You wash your hair way too often.

Even if you’re using the very best shampoo available, washing your hair too frequently can come with some nasty repercussions. The fact is that the vast majority of people don’t need to wash their hair every single day. Over-shampooing removes the healthy oils from your scalp, leaving the skin dry and irritated and causing the hair to look tired and lifeless.

We’re not saying you should cut back on your shower schedule, just that you could probably stand to shampoo less often. Washing your hair every other day (or even every third day) is enough to keep it clean and healthy. On non-shampoo days, a simple rinse under warm water can rid your hair of any dust, debris, or product. If your hair looks a little greasy a day or two after your last wash, evenly spray some dry shampoo to absorb some of the oil and add volume. Dry shampoo is also an essential haircare product to use after a sweaty gym session. Once you have dry shampoo in your haircare tool kit, you’ll be amazed at just how long you can go between washing.

[products ids=’1084230,1084231′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 3: You don’t wash your hair often enough.

Infrequent washing can be just as bad as shampooing too often. And with the rise of the “no-poo” movement, in which people wean themselves off shampoo altogether, many women are starting to have chronically dirty hair.

Not only will unwashed hair look less than optimal, it can actually cause major problems for the scalp. The detergents in shampoo work to remove sebum, a waxy substance secreted by the glands in your skin. When healthy, sebum adds protection to the hair shaft and helps your strands look glossy. But when there’s a build-up, it causes the hair to stick together and look oily. Plus, sebum resists water, so it can be a struggle to remove if you wait too long.

Think you might have neglected your shampoo schedule for a day or two too long? Don’t worry—a strong shampoo with scalp treatment can get rid of the excess sebum and revive your hair. Use your fingertips to scrub it in, then rinse thoroughly.

[products ids=’1084234,1084235′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 5: You dry your hair with the wrong towel.

What do you do when you get out of the shower? If it involves vigorously rubbing and scrunching your hair with any random towel in your bathroom, then twisting it up into a tight turban to dry, you might be damaging your hair.

Wet hair is significantly more fragile than dry hair and needs to be handled delicately. Rather than scrunching and squeezing the water out, use your fingertips to shake out the excess water. You can also blot hair with a soft cotton fabric to help get the moisture out. It might take more time before it dries completely, but your hair will be in much better condition.

The towel you use matters. Old terry cloth towels tend to be too rough to use on wet hair. Plus, the tiny thread loops in the fabric act like hooks for your hair, causing major frizz. Switch to a microfiber hair towel, which is gentler on your strands and helps minimize flyaways.

[products ids=’1084237,1084238′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 4: Using a blow dryer that’s too hot.

Few people enjoy sitting under a loud blow dryer for an extended period of time, so they use the hottest, most powerful setting to speed things up. That’s a major haircare no-no, though. Why? It can actually burn your hair! Even if you’re short on time, “fry drying” is not the answer to getting a quick style.

The best hairdryers have multiple heat and power settings. Always use the lowest setting when you go to dry your hair. Even though it takes longer to dry, your hair will look a lot smoother and stay healthier. Use the cool setting to lock in your style toward the end of your blowout.

[products ids=’1084315′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 5: You don’t protect your hair from heat.

Using the lowest setting on your hairdryer isn’t enough to safeguard your hair from heat damage. If you’re not using a thermal protection on your tresses, they can still get ruined from any amount of heat from your straightener, dryer, or curling iron.

Before you use any hot tool on your hair, spritz on some heat protection spray. While you generally want to evenly coat your hair with product, it’s not a bad idea to give the ends a little more love, as this is the part of the strand that’s most vulnerable to damage from heat.

The main purpose of a thermal protector spray is to shield your hair from the effects of high temperatures. However, it’s not a bad idea to get in the habit of spraying it on your hair every day, even if you’re not using heat to style, because thermal spray also gives your hair some extra protection from the elements and leaves a smooth finish.

[products ids=’1084291,1084294′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 6: You’re teasing your hair too much.

Big, voluminous hair is on trend. But since most of us weren’t born with naturally billowing locks, we rely on a trick of the trade to get a boost: teasing. We back comb our roots to make it look like we have plenty of dimension. It’s a totally harmless technique, right?

Wrong. While there’s nothing wrong with teasing your hair for an occasional special event, like a wedding or birthday party, backcombing your hair can harm the cuticles and leave the strands vulnerable to breakage. That daily va-va-voom from backcombing just isn’t worth the long-term damage to your hair.

With that being said, using a volume-boosting haircare product can give you locks that would make Dolly Parton jealous without incurring damage from over-teasing. Spray it into your roots, then blow-dry and style as usual for a voluminous finish.

[products ids=’1084295,1084296′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 7: You don’t protect your hair at night.

How does your hair look when you wake up in the morning? If it’s super tangled and you look like you just got out of a windstorm, you’re probably damaging your hair while you sleep—and causing yourself a major styling headache in the a.m.

Just like old terry cloth towels, your run-of-the-mill pillowcase usually isn’t the best choice when it comes to protecting your hair. Switch to a silk pillowcase. It doesn’t grip the hair like cotton or synthetic fibers, so it’s more likely that you’ll wake up with smooth, tangle-free locks. Plus, silk usually has a cool feeling to it, creating a pleasant sensation as soon as your head hits the pillow.

You could always opt for a silk night cap instead. It will offer even more protection and increase the longevity of your style. Hey, blowouts don’t come cheap—make sure you’re making the most of your styling investment by treating your tresses well while you catch your beauty sleep.

[products ids=’1084298,1084299′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 8: You’re too rough with your tangles.

Knots are frustrating—we totally get it. Sometimes hair can get so tangled that we aggressively try to brush all the knots out, usually losing a lot of hair in the process. Ugh!

It’s worth cultivating some patience when it comes to snarls in your mane, though. Being gentle as you try to remove knots can help you avoid broken strands and hair loss. One tool that can help is a detangling comb. These wide-tooth combs are designed to untangle knots a couple of strands at a time without ripping through your hair. They’re definitely a smarter choice than a boar’s-hair brush when it comes to grooming your hair.

Detangling spray can also help loosen up even the most stubborn of tangles. It lubricates the strands so you can work through the knots without damaging your hair. Bonus: Detangling spray can also act as a leave-in conditioner that won’t weigh down your hair. Talk about a double whammy for your haircare!

[products ids=’1084301,1084302′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 9: You forget to use serum.

If you’re into skincare, you might already have a favorite serum that you use on your face every day. But did you know that serum is just as important for your hair as it is for your complexion? It acts as a mask for your strands and scalp, helping minimize dryness and frizz.

Hair serum also infuses your mane with a luster you can’t get from other products. Apply it with your fingertips, then run a large paddle brush through your hair to help distribute the serum evenly. When it comes to hair serum, a little goes a long way. You’ll notice an immediate improvement in your hair’s condition and appearance once you incorporate this product into your haircare routine.

[products ids=’1084304′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 10: You’re not careful enough with your ponytails.

Whoever invented the ponytail is a genius in our books. This easy-breezy style helps you look polished under any circumstance, whether you just finished a workout or you’re running late to a job interview.

But the problem with this simple style is that it can cause broken strands if you’re not careful. Avoid ponytails that are too high or too tight, which can stress the hair. And choose your ponytail holder wisely. We recommend tossing out those old-school elastics (you know, the ones that always get tangled up in your hair) and opting for hair coils, instead. They hold your hair in place, and they slip out so easily, you’d never know they were there. Choose a set that matches your hair color for a sleeker look.

[products ids=’1084305,1084306′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 11: You never deep condition your hair.

Daily conditioning is a great first step to keeping your hair healthy, but if you’re not deep conditioning at least a couple of times each month, you’re making a big mistake.

Between washing, removing knots, and styling, we put our hair through the wringer. Deep conditioning not only repairs some of the daily damage to your hair, it also helps prevent future breakage by strengthening your strands.

We suggest making a weekly self-care ritual out of your deep conditioning treatment. Generously slather on deep conditioner, lop your hair in a loose bun atop your head, and cover it with a shower cap. Then sit back, and let it soak in while you watch a movie. Your hair (and your mind) will feel completely restored after you wash out the treatment.

[products ids=’1084308,1084309′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 12: You don’t protect your hair from the sun.

You wouldn’t go out on a bright sunny day without sunscreen, right? Of course not. So then why do most us still go out in the sun without protecting our hair? Just like skin, hair is vulnerable to damage from harmful UV rays. Overexposure to the sun can wear away our healthy oils and permanently damage the hair. Talk about a way to ruin your fun in the sun.

Keep your tresses safe by applying a conditioning spray with UV protection before you spend a day outdoors. A stylish hat can also come in handy, not only for shielding your hair from the elements, but for hiding bad hair days. But we doubt you’ll be having very many of those going forward, now that you’re not committing some of the most common haircare mistakes. Happy styling!

5 DIY Facials With Surprising Ingredients Your Skin Will Love

You make your own kombucha, bake bread, and upcycle furniture, and now you’re learning to sew; why not take it a step further and experiment with your own skincare?
Treating yourself to a relaxing facial doesn’t have to involve a trip to the spa (or putting a sizeable dent in your wallet). You’ll be surprised to learn that many common ingredients you have lying around in your pantry or fridge are actually incredible for your skin.
Feel like treating yourself but are low on beauty supplies? This article has all the expert advice you need to have fun creating DIY facial products while keeping it safe for your skin.

The Best Facial Ingredient for the Job

When it comes to concocting DIY facial products at home, experts agree that organic is best whenever possible. Rachael Pontillo, licensed esthetician and creator of the Create Your Own Skincare course, highlights the importance of using organic ingredients.

HealthyWay
Jernej Graj

“Pesticides in conventional products are damaging to many systems of the body, and many are also skin irritants. Much of what is applied topically gets absorbed, and we have so much evidence of systemic health issues linked to pesticides. Organic is always preferred, local whenever possible for freshness,” she says.
Remember that for the majority of the ingredients you’ll be using food-grade, not cosmetic-grade ingredients. To combat any potential cosmetic safety issues, Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist, research executive, and founder of Beauty Stat, has the following advice: “Manufactured beauty products are usually tested and preserved to confirm that they are safe for consumer use on skin.”
HealthyWay
kevin laminto

His advice: Store your DIY ingredients in the refrigerator to make sure they do not become contaminated by bacteria.

Proceed with caution.

It’s tempting to think that because an ingredient comes from your fridge or pantry it’s inherently safe to use on your skin. Jacob D. Steiger, MD, is a facial plastic surgeon based in Boca Raton, Florida, and is a firm believer in proceeding with caution when it comes to DIY skincare products:

“Natural” products not having any adverse effects on the skin is a very common misconception—especially when using clean skincare is a very trendy right now. There are many skincare products that may not necessarily be “natural” but come from natural sources. Everyone’s skin is different, and you can have a negative reaction to natural ingredients too. Like any product, natural products are only effective when used properly.

He also advises performing a patch test in a discreet area before applying any homemade facial products directly to the affected area.

HealthyWay
Tiara Leitzman

“No matter what skin type you have, you should always be careful with all DIY facial ingredients and skincare products. It’s always best to try a patch test first and see how your skin reacts to it before applying anything to your skin.”

Ingredients to Avoid

One drawback of making your own DIY skincare products based on recipes from the internet is that they often contain ingredients that can cause harm to the skin. Pontillo lists baking soda, crushed-up aspirin, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice as common ingredients to avoid. She cautions:

These common DIY skincare remedies can cause serious skin damage when applied full strength or even diluted—extreme dilutions are sometimes okay, though the desired effects will be diminished—because they can cause severe irritant reactions such as rashes, swelling, photosensitivity, sensitization, and even chemical burns due to a pH that is too high or too low.

The Facials That Pass Muster

Now that you know how to safely play the DIY game, consider whipping up these expert-recommended facial concoctions.

Papaya and Honey Mask

Em Surby, licensed esthetician at Mali Salon in Portland, Oregon, loves the gentle exfoliating and brightening properties of enzymatic fruits for at home facials.
Pineapple, papaya, and pumpkin are all good options,” she says. “With a natural enzyme, you get a nice, gentle exfoliation of the outermost layer of skin. A lot of professional products use fruit enzymes as well!”

HealthyWay
Lavi Perchik

This DIY facial recipe uses ripe papaya and a small amount of raw honey, leaving you with super soft, glowing skin. Pontillo raves about the benefits of using honey as an at-home skincare ingredient.
“I recommend raw honey for its antioxidants, hydration, and natural sugars and enzymes that cleanse, hydrate, and exfoliate without damaging the skin.”
HealthyWay
Jonathan Farber

This recipe makes enough for several facials and can be stored covered in the fridge for up to three days or in the freezer for three months (try freezing the mixture in ice cube trays and thawing them one at a time for an any-time-of-day facial).

Ingredients:

  • 1 papaya, seeds discarded
  • 1 Tbsp. raw honey

Method:

  1. Blend the papaya and honey until smooth or coarsely mash with a fork.
  2. Apply to clean face for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat skin dry.

Cucumber, Yogurt, and Aloe Mask

Fans of DIY facials will be pleased to learn that the carton of plain yogurt sitting in the fridge can be used for more than just smoothies and granola. Plain yogurt contains lactic acid, a skin-smoothing ingredient that’s well known for its impressive exfoliating properties.

Cucumber and aloe vera, two of Pontillo’s favorite at-home facial ingredients, add an extra layer of skin-pampering protection. “Aloe is excellent for bring hydration and antioxidants into the skin, while also cooling, soothing, and protecting irritated or blemished skin,” she shares. “Cucumbers are cooling and firming—great for reducing puffiness.”
Make this mask in small, single-use amounts as it can quickly turn watery if stored longer than a couple of hours.

  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat skin dry.

Tomato and Green Tea Toner

This gentle tomato and green tea toner is a one-two punch approach to DIY skincare. For starters, it’s a natural source of alpha hydroxy acids.
Steiger explains: “My favorite natural ingredient to use in facials and other skincare products is alpha hydroxy acids. They are a group of natural acids found in foods including citric acid (citrus fruits), malic acid (apples), tartaric acid (grapes), glycolic acid (sugar cane), and lactic acid (sour milk and tomato juice).”

The toner’s green tea, another one of Pontillo’s favorite ingredients, offers a variety of benefits to the skin. “I recommend green tea because it is rich in antioxidants—primarily EGCG—theanine, which is an amino acid, and has sun protective and restorative benefits, as well as anti-inflammatory and firming benefits.”
HealthyWay
五玄土 ORIENTO 王杉

Use the best green tea you can find for best results (loose leaf from a source with high turnover is ideal). Store this toner in a small spray bottle in the fridge for up to one week.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe tomato
  • 1 cup of freshly brewed green tea, chilled

Method:

  1. Remove all of the watery juice from the tomato, pressing it through a fine mesh sieve to extract as much as possible.
  2. Whisk together the fresh tomato juice and green tea.
  3. Store in a spray bottle and apply to face directly or with a cotton ball after cleansing and before moisturizing.

Super Vitamin C Mask

This unique DIY mask is one that Joshua Ross, celebrity esthetician from West Hollywood’s SkinLab, loves to use on his clientele.
For a DIY vitamin C mask, mix powder/crystal L-ascorbic acid, which is pure vitamin C, with a little bit of virgin coconut oil,” Ross says. “Leave on for five to seven minutes. This mask is really great for brightening, [addressing] sun damage, and [promoting] hydration.”

HealthyWay
Tomas Salas

L-ascorbic acid can be purchased online or found at natural food stores and pharmacies.

Oat, Honey, and Chamomile Mask

This super calming face mask contains three of Caleb Backe’s top five DIY skincare ingredients (the other two are ginger and aloe vera). A health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics, Backe is a big fan of the effect oats have on your skin.
“Oats are a great exfoliant for sensitive skin, and their emollient properties make them a great moisturizer. What’s more is that they’re a cleanser containing antioxidants, so they won’t strip the skin of its natural oils.”

HealthyWay
Andrea Tummons

Continuing with the theme of tea and facials, chamomile tea is used in place of water to soak the oats.
“A strong anti-inflammatory, chamomile is the ingredient you’re looking for to soothe irritated skin,” Backe says. “It also has excellent healing abilities as it’s rich in antioxidants and can increase the penetration of other skincare products.”
Finally, honey (which was mentioned by almost all the experts featured in this article as a powerful DIY facial ingredient) is also an effective way to bind all of the ingredients in this recipe together.
HealthyWay
Chinh Le Duc

Backe goes on to say, “This thick ingredient is a great emulsifier in any facial treatment and the benefits are numerous. It moisturizes the skin deeply, brightens complexion, as well as lightens scars.”
For best results, use instant oats for this mask; they will form a uniform, thick paste that won’t fall apart as you’re applying it to your face.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tbsp. instant oats
  • ¼ cup chamomile tea, chilled
  • 1 Tbsp. honey

Method:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. Once the oats have absorbed all of the liquid, apply the paste directly to clean face and let sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

More Than 1,000 Amazon Reviewers Agree: These Are The Beauty Products You Should Buy

As a self-proclaimed skincare geek, nothing irritates me quite like buying a pricey new beauty product only to learn it doesn’t live up to the hype. It can be really difficult to cut through all of the marketing to figure out if a cleanser, moisturizer, or eyeshadow really does deliver on what it promises.

That’s why I’ve gotten into the habit of paying close attention to Amazon reviews. I know that the best indication of how well a product will work for me is the impartial feedback of consumers who have already used it. So, before I make a purchase, I hop on Amazon and scroll straight to the reviews, where I look for three things that’ll help me decide whether to click “buy” or not.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/zoranm

I take a look at how many reviews a product has, because I know that a five-star rating is much easier to maintain if only a handful of people have tried your product. I look at the aggregate star rating itself to see how the different scores break down. Lastly, I dive into specific reviews—especially the negative ones—to see if there is anything I need to know before deciding to buy.

In my research, I’ve learned a lot about the best skincare products Amazon has to offer. But I’ve learned the most about highly reviewed items, like these 38 beauty products that all boast more than 1,000 reviews.

These cleansers are the Bomb Dot Com (Amazon Dot Com, that is).

Washing your face is the most basic part of a really great skincare routine, but not all cleansers are created equal. These are the best of the best—not only do they have over 1,000 purchaser reviews, they all maintain an average star rating of four or more. They also just so happen to qualify for free, two-day shipping with Prime.

The Ultimate Haircare Product Guide: 41 Products For Literally Every Type Of Hair

How many half-empty haircare products are currently collecting dust under your bathroom sink because they didn’t deliver on their promise to tame your frizz or plump up your lifeless locks?
With this comprehensive haircare product guide for all hair types (even yours), you’ll never waste an expensive bottle of shampoo again. Whether your hair is curly or straight, thin or thick, short or long, or somewhere in between, here are 41 products for every type of hair that live up to the hype.

Best Products For Curly/Natural Hair

1. Meet the curl maker.

A lot of products designed for curly/natural hair promise to make your curls shiny, soft, and bouncy, but end up leaving your hair crunchier than a bag of half-eaten Cheetos. Say goodbye to crunchy curls with Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This styling jelly contains a ton of nourishing ingredients, like marshmallow and agave extracts, vitamins E and B12, and aloe vera to give your curly hair ultimate softness and shine.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Camille-Rose-Naturals-Maker-Ounce/dp/B0081K2R2U”]Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker, $21.70 on Amazon[/link-button]

2. Milk makes your hair strong and healthy too.

Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker really works best if you use it with their Curl Love Moisture Milk, a super hydrating leave-in conditioner containing rice milk, organic avocado, and slippery elm bark to help detangle curly tresses as it moisturizes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk is the perfect product for curly hair in winter months, when cold temps can cause dry, brittle hair. Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk can be used on wet hair or even dry locks if they’re feeling brittle.

3. Beat the heat and humidity with this amazing gel.

Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture Coconut and Moringa Oils Humidity Block Curl Gel is definitely a splurge item, but it’s so worth the cost for a product that actually does combat humidity to tame frizzy, dry curls.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This gel does double duty to protect your curls; it provides a protective barrier from moisture in the air to prevent frizz from forming while locking in your hair’s natural moisture to keep curls soft and manageable at the same time.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KTYA0WO”]Madame CJ Walker Humidity Block Curl Gel, $59 on Amazon[/link-button]

4. Perfect curls, every time.

An affordable alternative to luxe hydrating curl gels, Foxy Curls by TIGI Bed Head Screw It Curl Hydrating Gel promises soft, defined curls with every use. A three-ounce tube will last a long time, even on the thickest head of curly hair.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You only need a tiny amount (think pea-sized) to work through hair. Pro tip: Apply starting at mid-length and work your way down to the tip to avoid weighing hair down at the root.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071792VHS”]Foxy Curls Hydrating Gel, $11.86 on Amazon[/link-button]

Best Products For Dry/Damaged Hair

5. Channel Cleopatra’s iconic look with this gel.

Perfect for hair that is prone to split ends and breaking, The Mane Choice Ancient Egyptian 24 Karat Gold Twisting Gel works best for twist outs and braided hairstyles but is an ideal choice for anyone looking to hydrate and repair damaged locks.

HealthyWay
Amazon

While this product won’t make your hair grow faster, it is enriched with biotin and vitamin D, so the gold twisting gel helps prevent split ends, promoting natural hair growth and retention.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075JQC2ZT”]Ancient Egyptian 24 Karat Gold Twisting Gel, $14.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

6. Treat your hair to an at-home spa day.

We love an at-home DIY spa day, but when was the last time you treated your hair to some TLC? Order a set of Ouai Treatment Masques, designed by celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, to restore damaged hair’s softness after just one use.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These masques contain artichoke leaf extract, which helps seal each strand’s cuticle, resulting in less breakage and fewer split ends. Simply work through damp hair, leave on for 10 minutes, and rinse away for best results. Best enjoyed with a hot bath and cucumber face mask.

7. A few drops of this product help repair damaged hair.

Stylists and salon-goers alike rave about Moroccanoil’s Moroccan Oil Treatment for damaged hair. It’s infused with ultra-hydrating Argan oil and can be used right out of the shower, during styling, or even to smooth flyaways.

HealthyWay
Amazon

And even though it’s an oil, because of its lightweight formula, it’s great for all hair types, even very thin hair, because it won’t weight tresses down.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Moroccan-Oil-Treatment-0-85-Oz/dp/B003JKFEL8″]Moroccan Oil Treatment Infused With Argan Oil, $13.60 on Amazon[/link-button]

8. Prevent dry, damaged hair in the shower.

It really takes a multi-step approach to tackle damaged hair. While the shampoo you got on clearance at the drugstore may be perfectly fine for the average user, if your hair is prone to split ends and breakage, we love this Aveda Dry Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner Duo.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Not only will this leave your hair shiny and soft, but it smells great too, which makes sense considering it’s infused with certified organic bergamot, lavender, and ginger lily extracts.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Aveda-Remedy-Moisturizing-Shampoo-Conditioner/dp/B00RJ3Y1N8″]Aveda Dry Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner Duo Set, $74 on Amazon[/link-button]

For Straight Hair/Blowout Styles

9. Cross the line.

The invisible oil line, that is, with Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil, which features an enriching blend of six oils, including coconut oil, grapeseed oil extract, and sweet almond oil that won’t weigh hair down.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Ideal for any type of hair, Invisible Oil is best used before styling to tame frizz, protect hair from styling tools, and prevent damage. You can also simply work a small amount through dry hair after a blowout for a sleek, polished look.

10. Protect your mane with this budget-friendly spray.

Good haircare doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. That’s why we love L’Oreal Paris Sleek It Hair Spray as an alternative to pricier heat protectants. As an added bonus, Sleek It is available in most drug stores.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s perfect for straight styles that require frequent blowouts to protect hair from high heat, seal in moisture, and prevent frizz from forming. And, at less than four bucks per bottle, it’s a must-have styling product that won’t break the bank.

11. Shine on.

How do celebs and hair models in commercials get such impossibly shiny, frizz-free locks? While they probably have a small army of stylists ready to combat the smallest flyaway, you just need one product for hair to shine: Saints & Sinners Illuminati Divine Shine Holographic Serum.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The serum works for all hair types but is perfect for giving straight hair high shine thanks to its blend of protective botanical oils. This Saints & Sinners serum is also phthalate-, paraben-, and palm oil–free, so you can feel good about what you’re putting on your hair.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077MKS2HQ”]Saints & Sinners Illuminati Holographic Serum, $18.45 on Amazon[/link-button]

Best Products For Fine/Thin Hair

12. Bounce back with this shower set.

It’s so hard to know what to do with thin hair. Products containing oils can easily weigh hair down, causing it to appear lifeless and flat. Volumizing products can plump strands up but leave frizz behind. So what’s a girl with fine hair to do? Try Herbal Essences Bio-Renew White Grapefruit and Mosa Mint Shampoo and Conditioner for your go-to shower routine.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Like most Herbal Essences products, this shampoo and conditioner set smells divine and lives up to the promise to gently restore volume to thin hair without drying it out.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Herbal-Essences-Bio-Grapefruit-Conditioner/dp/B079TH68RF”]Bio-Renew Shampoo and Conditioner, $14.14 on Amazon[/link-button]

13. Big hair, don’t care.

It’s easy to pump up hair’s volume with Big Sexy Hair Powder Play, a texturizing spray powder that magically lifts and locks in style for any type of fine hair.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Simply spray on hair at the root (and remember that a little bit goes a long way with this product), work through hair, and style as you normally would for lift that lasts all day.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Big-Sexy-Hair-Powder-Play/dp/B009BCLJMQ”]Big Sexy Hair Powder Play + Mini Powder Play, $22.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

14. Fake thick hair fast.

Living Proof Thickening Cream is a lifesaver for any woman with thin, fine hair. This silicone-free cream actually deposits thickening “dots” to plump each strand up to five times longer than other similar products.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The end result? Hair that looks so voluminous and thick, it could be mistaken for one of Dolly Parton’s wigs. Okay, so maybe not that voluminous, but you get the idea.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Living-Proof-Thickening-Cream-Ounce/dp/B0032B3RTK”]Living Proof Thickening Cream, from $11.01 on Amazon[/link-button]

15. Take care of your scalp to prevent thinning hair.

Preventing thin hair begins with taking care of your scalp. Use Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Scalp Care Anti-Thinning Shampoo to cleanse your scalp and stimulate hair growth.

HealthyWay
Ulta

Featuring a blend of clover, ginseng, and other stimulating botanicals, this color-safe shampoo is perfect for daily use on curly or straight hair that’s not as thick as you’d like it to be.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2wZgkIP”]Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Scalp Care Anti-Thinning Shampoo, $39 from Ulta[/link-button]

Best Products to Fight Frizz

16. Sleek, shiny hair all day, every day.

It’s been such a muggy, humid summer, we’ve just stopped trying to combat frizzy flyaways. That is, until we found OGX Anti-Frizz Hydrating Kukui Oil. This Hawaiian oil is perfect for helping hair maintain moisture and shine, while providing a protective barrier against humid temps that can cause your hair to frizz out.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Best of all, this oil is light enough for any type of hair; just spritz through before styling, or rub a small amount through dry hair for luminous, sleek shine.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HVKAYC6″]OGX Anti-Frizz Hydrating Kukui Oil, $9.31 on Amazon[/link-button]

17. The best way to combat frizz isn’t an oil or a serum.

Getting rid of frizz starts before you even begin to style your hair—as soon as you step out of the shower. Use a microfiber hair towel, like this 2-Pack Anti-Frizz Turban For Sleeping and Showering to quickly absorb water without having to rub your hair in a cotton towel, which can cause major frizz.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These microfiber towels dry quickly and feature an elastic band, so they stay put until you’re ready to brush and style your hair.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DLBML8T”]2-Pack Microfiber Hair Towel, $15.87 on Amazon[/link-button]

18. Sleep on satin for luxe locks.

Keep frizz at bay between washes by sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase, like this Shop Bedding Blissford Satin Pillowcase, instead of cotton. Cotton soaks up moisture and oils (think about how quickly cotton balls soak up oils and residue on your skin and nails) which can leave hair dry and brittle the next day.

HealthyWay
Amazon

But silk and satin allow hair to retain moisture, allowing your blowout to last days longer. Plus, it just feels extra glam to sleep on satin, you know?
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Shop-Bedding-Sweet-Dreams-Pillowcase/dp/B01MS3PXM7″]Blissford Luxury Satin Pillowcase, $8.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

Best Products For Thick/Coarse Hair

19. Finally, a hair tie that holds ALL your hair!

Scunci, the makers of those ubiquitous black hair ties that somehow end up wherever lost socks and extra bobby pins hide, finally has a product for all the ladies with #thickhairproblems: Scunci Thick Hair Black Elastics.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This hair tie two-pack contains 48 hair ties, so you won’t be desperately searching for hair ties on your way to the gym or work. They’re also metal-free for an all-day, no-damage hold. And with this double pack, you’ll never have to hunt for a hair tie again.

20. Quench coarse hair in under five minutes.

A deep-conditioning treatment for thick or coarse hair that provides real results in under five minutes really is a miracle, and so is Aussie’s beloved 3-Minute Miracle Moist Conditioning Treatment.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This deep-conditioning cream is perfect to lather on when you first hop in the shower so you can rinse it away a few minutes later. It’s gentle enough to use several times a week, or anytime you feel like your hair needs a triple-shot of moisture.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Aussie-Minute-Miracle-Conditioning-Treatment/dp/B01NABKH3Y”]Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Moist Conditioning Treatment, $4.97 on Amazon[/link-button]

21. Untangle even the thickest hair with this brush.

How many times have you simply had to throw your impossibly thick hair up into a messy bun because you just didn’t have time to brush it out and style it before work? May we suggest giving the Wet Brush Custom Care for Thick Hair a try?

HealthyWay
Amazon

This brush is designed specifically to navigate thick hair, combing out even the knottiest tangles with strong, sparse bristles that gently massage the scalp.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MTA1ENN”]Wet Brush Custom Care, Thick Hair, $10.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

Best Products For Color-Treated Hair

22. Restore color-treated hair to its former glory.

You love your new rich fall-hued color, which pairs perfectly with pumpkin spice season, but adding color to your hair can leave locks brittle if they‘re not cared for properly. Enter Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 Repairing Treatment, a restorative treatment free from phthalates, parabens, and sulfates with a cult-like following.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Apply a generous amount through damp hair, leave on for ten minutes, and watch your color-treated hair come back to life.

23. Phase out the fade out.

Do you spend a small fortune to keep up your signature shade, only to have the color fade to a tarnished hue after a few washes? Well, no more, thanks to Matrix Biolage Colorlast Shampoo and Conditioner.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This shampoo and conditioner set has a low pH, meaning it won’t wash color out over time, meaning you can keep your new hue from fading for up to nine weeks. More good news, this shampoo-and-conditioner duo is gentle enough for daily use.

Washing hair too often can fade color fast, which is why we thank the hair goddesses every day for this ultra-affordable Suave Professionals Color Care Dry Shampoo.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Like most dry shampoos, Suave Color Care absorbs oil away from the scalp, keeping your mane looking fresh between washes. It also protects color from becoming dull thanks to its keratin-infused technology.

Best Products For Blonde Hair

25. Do blondes really have more fun?

Well, we can’t actually answer that question, but we can recommend Oribe Bright Blonde Shampoo to keep your bleach-blonde tresses looking their best.

HealthyWay
Amazon

We know it’s pretty pricey for shampoo, but this sulfate-free violet shampoo is beloved by stylists who know it can help correct brassy tones and illuminate natural highlights, making it worth every penny.

Best Products For Postpartum Hair

27. Hide thin spots fast with this postpartum miracle.

Okay, so Nioxin Thickening Spray isn’t a product made specifically for postpartum hair loss. Unfortunately, nothing can really stop your hair from falling out after having a baby (thanks, hormones), but this spray can minimize the appearance of extremely thin or patchy spots.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It works for every hair type and adds instant, lasting volume thanks to its ProThick technology.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Nioxin-Thickening-Spray-5-1-oz/dp/B015NKDPXA”]Nioxin Thickening Spray, $15.30 on Amazon[/link-button]

28. Gently detangle hair to hang on to every strand.

It’s the most disheartening thing to watch your postpartum hair fall out by the handful every time you run a brush through it. A good detangling cream, like Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner, can help save strands as you comb hair out post-shower.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The weightless formula ensures that thinning hair doesn’t get weighed down by product, which leaves you with bouncy, voluminous hair.

29. Give your hair a strength-training session.

Just like you practiced kegel exercises all through your pregnancy, your postpartum hair needs strengthening too, which is why we love this Shea Moisture Strengthen, Grow & Restore Shampoo and Conditioner Set.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The main ingredient, Jamaican black castor oil, helps hair grow stronger, prevents breakage, and gently cleanses the scalp to promote new growth over time.

30. Trick everyone into thinking new mommyhood is just a day at the beach.

Yeah, right! But the right texturizing spray, like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, can really help add volume to thinning or patchy hair. Similar to a dry shampoo, texturizing spray plumps up hair by absorbing oils that weigh hair down and adds dimension as you work the product through dry hair to give it a tousled look.

HealthyWay
Amazon

No one will ever know you haven’t showered or slept in three days with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray!

32. Treat your silver locks right with this shampoo.

Silver-haired goddesses, rejoice. Women in their twenties, thirties, and beyond are rocking the silver look with good reason: It looks amazing on everyone! Whether you’re going gray naturally or you’ve chosen silver-hued hair, take care of your tresses with Clairol Shimmer Lights Original Shampoo for blonde and silver hair.

33. Hydrate your hair for soft, silver strands.

As our hair grays, it loses moisture and becomes much coarser over time. That’s why keeping silver hair hydrated is ultra important. Keep moisture locked in with Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense Oil Treatment.

HealthyWay
Amazon

With its patented hybrid oil technology, Redken Diamond Oil delivers high shine and locks in moisture for thirsty hair. Unfortunately, this amazing product has been discontinued by Redken (say it ain’t so!), but you can still get it from verified third-party sellers on Amazon.

34. Cover silver hair up, if you must.

We think rocking silver and gray hair is totally awesome, but we understand that not every woman may feel that way. If you do choose to cover your gray with a permanent all-over color, make sure you visit a professional to get the perfect style and color.

HealthyWay
Ulta

But, if you’re looking for a temporary solution to gray hair, how about trying L’Oreal Colorista 1-Day Spray in 10 different unique shades, including rose gold. This one-day color is totally temporary and washes out immediately in the shower, so unlike permanent hair color, there’s no commitment (and no risk of a botched at-home dye job!).

Best Products For Short/Shaved Hair

35. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

HealthyWay

Best Products For Long Hair

38. Nip split ends in the bud.

Okay, so we’re never ones to advocate for cutting your own hair, but when you have extremely long hair, split ends can cause irreparable damage to hardwon hair growth. If you can’t make it to the salon for frequent trims, keep this set of Professional Hair Cutting Barber Scissors with Comb and Case nearby for the occasional nip off the ends.

Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty Sale is upon us. Prepare your wallets. Say goodbye to your paychecks. These deals are hard to beat. Whether you’ve decided to take advantage of Sephora’s Beauty Insider Appreciation Sale or not, it’s hard to ignore Ulta’s offerings that are, coincidentally, up for grabs starting right around the end of Sephora’s sale.
I’ve gone through each of the 21 days and picked out my top picks that I think are really great products or really great deals. You can find the products I’m most excited about under My Top Picks for This Week.
But just because I don’t love it doesn’t mean you won’t! That’s why I’ve made sure to include Everything Else on Sale in beautiful, clickable form for you. See a product you like the look of? Click the widget and you’ll be whisked off to the product page so you can purchase.
Finally, each week, the Ulta Beauty Collection—that is, products developed for and branded by Ulta—are also on sale. Their house line of products are some really solid basics and they’ve got great sales on those items too, so I’ve made sure to include those (again in beautiful, clickable widgets) under Ulta Beauty Buys This Week.
Enjoy the sale—it’ll be over before you know it!

Week One: Sept. 2-8

My Top Picks for This Week…

[sul title=”Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer” subheader=”Regularly $34 | $17 on Sept. 2″]
This is definitely one of my favorite face primers, so I never mind paying full price when it’s time to restock. It hydrates the skin, letting much-needed moisture soak in pre-foundation, plus it somehow has a glowy, blurring effect that seems to reduce the size of my pores, even when I feel they’re bigger than Texas itself.

Since it feels fairly lightweight, it’s great under foundation, tinted moisturizer, B.B. creams, and even on its own, making it one of the most versatile primers in my collection.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2Nr8DkG”]Get it at Ulta for $14 (reg. $34)[/link-button]
[sul title=”Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Cloud Cream Cleanser & Hyaluronic Cloud Serum” subheader=”Regularly $28-65 | $14-$32.50 on Sept. 2″]
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Elizabeth Barrett Browning may have been talking about her beau, Robert, but this week I’m dedicating the sonnet to Mr. P.T. Roth himself. His Water Drench line is to. die. for.

The Cloud Cream Cleanser is a lovely, whipped makeup remover and facial cleanser made with hyaluronic acid and silk proteins. Follow up that cleanser with the Hyaluronic Cloud Serum, which contains 75 percent hyaluronic acid, those same silk proteins, and a zinc, copper, manganese, iron, and silicon mineral complex, all of which work together to hydrate, moisturize, and soften, making your skin as soft as a cloud (probably—I’ve never touched one).
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2MA9mUe”]Get the cleanser at Ulta for $14 (reg. $28)[/link-button]
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2LCwSLb”]Get the serum at Ulta for $32.50 (reg. $65)[/link-button]
[sul title=”Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliners” subheader=”Regularly $22 | $11 on Sept. 3″]
I’m a huge Stila Stay All Day liquid liner fan, but for those of you who are not so into sharp wings and cat-eye looks, the Stila Smudge Stick liners are probably more up your alley.

It’s an eyeliner that—as the name implies—you can smudge for extra smokiness. However, once it’s on, it’s really on, and it’s not coming off for nothin’… well, besides makeup remover. But yes, these eyeliners are waterproof, so even though you can smudge it upon application to transform into the smokeshow you are inside, it won’t get smudgy on you throughout the day. Praise be.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2woB9gs”]Get it at Ulta for $11 (reg. $22)[/link-button]
[sul title=”Philosophy Time in a Bottle 100% In-Control Resist Renew Repair Serum” subheader=”Regularly $76 | $38 on Sept. 3″]
If Cher could turn back time, she’d take back those words that hurt you. If I could turn back time, I’d rather have the skin I had in my early twenties. We all want different things in life, I guess. Philosophy, however, appears to be on my side.

Their Time in a Bottle serum fights signs of aging and works to give you back the skin you had when you were young and worry-free. It repairs skin damage while protecting your face from free radicals and impurities, plus it sets you up for skin-related success by helping you fight future damage.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2wsugL7″]Get it at Ulta for $38 (reg. $76)[/link-button]
[sul title=”BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter” subheader=”Regularly $41 | $20.50 on Sept. 4″]
Nobody’s perfect, but BECCA thinks your skin can be. In addition to faithfully doing your skincare routine morning and night, you can take it up a notch with liquid highlighting drops to finally try that strobing thing out all the YouTube makeup artists talk about.

This highlighter is great because it’s fairly versatile. You can mix a few drops into your moisturizer, primer, or foundation of choice and apply all over your face for a subtle but marked glow. Alternatively if you want to get those cheekbones popping, use a drop or two and blend as you would a traditional highlighter.

[sul title=”Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser” subheader=”Regularly $15 | $7.50 on Sept. 4″]
This is one of Mario Badescu’s best-selling products, so if you’re in the market for a facial cleanser to target acne, this one is worth your attention.

Formulated with beta hydroxy acids to fight dead skin build up and clogged pores, it also uses soothing botanicals to calm redness and irritation that tends to come with breakouts. It’s potent enough to make a difference but gentle enough to use daily.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2MFw1i7″]Get it at Ulta for $7.50 (reg. $15)[/link-button]
[sul title=”Eyeko Mascara” subheader=”Regularly $19-$30 | $9.50-$15 on Sept. 4″]
Check out all these Eyeko mascaras that are on sale on Sept. 5! Best of all, they all have really great reviews.

Click on one of the widgets above to go check that specific mascara out—and have fun batting those lashes at your latest paramour.
[sul title=”Benefit Hoola & Hoola Lite Matte Bronzing Powder” subheader=”Regularly $30 | $15 on Sept. 5″]
This was one of the OG Holy Grail products back in the day (and by back in the day, I mean like 10 years ago when the concept of YouTube beauty gurus was in its infancy). The industry has come a long way with bronzers and contouring and what-have-you, but this little bronzer in a box still holds its own among flashier products.

The regular Hoola is the classic, but Benefit’s also made Hoola Lite, a lighter shade for fairer complexions. They’re both completely matte, so when you swipe it over your face for a sunkissed glow, you won’t end up looking like a disco ball, which is highly important.

[sul title=”Kopari Save Face Oil” subheader=”Regularly $44 | $22 on Sept. 5″]
Kopari has made a splash recently for their face and body products and this face oil is no exception.

Use it to remove makeup, moisturize, prime before makeup, tend to split ends, and soothe cuticles—they call it a face oil but it’s really more of a multitasker. It’s full of powerhouse ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, squalane, avocado oil, and extracts like apple, coffee, sandalwood, banana, melon, and more that all work together to moisturize, soften, and protect.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2LGd75s”]Get it at Ulta for $22 (reg. $44)[/link-button]
[sul title=”Murad Age Reform Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture” subheader=”Regularly $75 | $37.50 on Sept. 6″]
So I’ve already shouted out one great product for the acne-prone girls, but what if your skin is drier than a desert? Well, I’m right there with you—I have extremely dry skin. It’s thirsty for love. I’ve used a few Murad products in my day so I’m excited about this Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture.

It’s a thick cream that manages to sink into the skin, instead of sitting on top feeling greasy. It uses a collagen support complex to boost firmness, while a blend of oils helps lock in that much-needed hydration. I love a good cream as the final step of my nighttime skin routine and at less than $40, this is a great option.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2wtG6ER”]Get it at Ulta for $37.50 (reg. $75)[/link-button]
[sul title=”Beautyblender Blendercleanser Solid” subheader=”Regularly $16 | $8 on Sept. 6″]
I have extolled the virtues of the original Beautyblender before, and while some people may think it’s ridiculous to spend $20 on a makeup sponge when there are drugstore knockoffs for under $5, I can’t imagine what they’ll think of me recommending a $16 cleansing bar for said Beautyblender. But! This really is a great cleanser.

It’s basically a bar of soap, but it was formulated specifically to clean makeup and dirt out of a Beautyblender. It also comes with a little silicon cleansing mat that you can scrub your Beautyblender and makeup brushes on to get them extra clean.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2wsK8NA”]Get it at Ulta for $8 (reg. $16)[/link-button]
[sul title=”Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara” subheader=”Regularly $25 | $12.50 on Sept. 7″]
In need of major volume? Lancôme’s Monsieur Big mascara may be the one for you. This thick fibered brush coats lashes in waxes and polymers to give you va-va-voom volume in just one coat.

Compared to bare lashes, Monsieur Big-coated lashes have 12 times more volume and 95 percent of respondents said that it glides on easily and wears well all day. Monsieur Big, je t’aime.

[sul title=”Perricone MD Cold Plasma Products” subheader=”Regularly $85-159 | $42.50-$79.50 on Sept. 7″]
Ulta’s doing it big on Sept. 7: All of Perricone MD’s Cold Plasma products are 50 percent off. For the uninitiated, that includes…
Cold Plasma+ Neck & Chest Broad Spectrum SPF 25 This whipped moisturizing cream is ideal for the oft-neglected skin on your neck and chest, which absolutely does need TLC (and moisture and SPF)! Repair damage and protect it from the sun; you’ll thank us in 20 years.

[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2NAXONc”]Get Cold Plasma+ Neck & Chest at Ulta for $44.50 (reg. $89)[/link-button]
Cold Plasma+ Eye This eye cream targets skin concerns that tend to come with aging, like crow’s feet and fine lines, and those that come with being a human of any age, like puffiness and dark circles. They claim you’ll see results in just seven days.

[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2wtOOTs”]Get it at Ulta for $55 (reg. $110)[/link-button]
Cold Plasma Sub-D “Loose, sagging skin” isn’t really how most people would like to describe their jawline/neck area. Perricone MD knows this. And so they have developed the Sub-D cream that targets wrinkles in the jaw/neck/chest region with alpha lipoic acid and caffeine.

[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2N4767b”]Get it at Ulta for $67.50 (reg. $135)[/link-button]
Cold Plasma+ Face If you’re starting to notice signs of aging, first of all, take a breath—we all get older (hopefully) and lines and wrinkles are a sign of experience and a life well-lived! But society and patriarchy and mean people are a thing, so we totally get why you want to maybe at least slow down the appearance of aging. This face treatment works to correct all those aging-related skin concerns. No shame in that game.

[sul title=”Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer” subheader=”Regularly $23 | $11.50 on Sept. 8″]
I love me some Anastasia! She’s the brow queen and even if you can’t make it to her salon in Beverly Hills, you can have the magic of her brow work in your own home.

The Brow Definer pencil is a thicker version of ABH’s beloved Brow Wiz pencil, making it better for those of us who are more Brooke Shields than Clara Bow to fill, define, and shape our power brows.
[link-button href=”https://fave.co/2MYCuUL”]Get it at Ulta for $11.50 (reg. $23 )[/link-button]
[sul title=”Philosophy Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Exfoliating Clay Mask” subheader=”Regularly $35 | $17.50 on Sept. 8″]
Now is the time to try a clay mask. (If you’ve been waiting for a sign, that was it.) Finally say bye-bye to blackheads with this mask.

Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple clay mask uses white clay, salicylic acid, and natural exfoliants to draw out clogged pores, extracting and refining them to give you a refreshed and smooth face you can’t help but touch. In a two-week study, 93 percent of women said their pores looked unclogged and their skin felt extra clean.

There are six bareMinerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powders on sale this week! I highly encourage you to check them out. They’re great at stopping shine and locking your makeup down to ensure it’ll stay put all day.

[sul title=”It Brushes for Ulta Velvet Luxe Brushes” subheader=”Regularly $24-$98 | $12-$49 on Sept. 9″]

[sul title=”Exuviance Age Reverse” subheader=”Regularly $78-$79 | $39-39.50 on Sept. 9″]
Told ya Sept. 9 was a heavy hitter. There are three products from Exuviance’s Age Reverse line on sale today.
Age Reverse HydraFirm Target signs of aging (as the line’s name implies) while also getting hydration, thanks to hyaluronic acid and a combination of powerful peptides.

Age Reverse Total Correct + Sculpt Serum Exuviance calls this their gold standard serum; it’s formulated to restore youth and vitality. And if it can’t actually do that, it can at least make it look like it’s doing that, and that’s half the battle.

Age Reverse Eye Contour Not the contour you’re thinking of. This eye cream uses polyhydroxy acids and Exuviance’s patented maltobionic acid to protect and repair the delicate skin around your lil eyeballs.

[sul title=”Stila One Step Prime, One Step Illuminate, and One Step Correct Face Primers” subheader=”Regularly $36 | $18 on Sept. 10″]
Three primers! All on sale! What. A. Day. These One Step face primers from Stila are all similar but they do have distinct uses. One Step Prime fills in pores and lines to smooth out the canvas that is your face—paint away! One Step Illuminate hydrates and—surprise!—illuminates skin to get you off on the right foot. One Step Correct uses three color-correcting pigments to neutralize any discoloration and even complexion—green counteracts redness, lavender tackles yellow undertones, and peach brightens dark circles and spots.

[sul title=”Flesh Highlighters” subheader=”Regularly $18-$28 | $9-$14 on Sept. 10″]
Three highlighters! All on sale! What. A. Day. (Sound familiar?) But yes, Sept 10. is another great day at Ulta. There are three different highlighter formulations on sale from Flesh today: a highlighting balm, a highlighting powder, and liquid highlighting drops. The balm and drops come in four colors while the highlighting powder comes in six, so you can definitely find at least one—but let’s be real, probably more—to suit whatever look you’re going for. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

[sul title=”Lancôme Cils Booster XL Vitamin-Infused Mascara Primer” subheader=”Regularly $25 | $12.75 on Sept. 11″]
Boost them cils, girl. (Cils are eyelashes. De rien.) If you weren’t born with lush lashes but you still want the look of falsies without having to actually put them on, get a primer!

Put on this Lancôme primer pre-mascara to condition, thicken, and lengthen your bare lashes. Lancôme’s primers work great with their own mascaras, but I’ve used one of their lash primers before on any mascara and no matter what combination (or timing) I employ, I never experience clumping or fall-out. Big fan over here.

[sul title=”Algenist POWER Recharging Night Pressed Serum” subheader=”Regularly $95 | $47.50 on Sept. 11″]
I’ve got the power! That’s what you’ll be singing after using Algenist’s POWER Recharging Serum.

I love a serum that comes in a jar because it’s pretty much guaranteed to be rich and powerful (just how I like my men, coincidentally!). It uses their patented alguronic acid, AlgaProtein, and regular ol’ coconut water to recharge, moisturize, and hydrate. Powerful, indeed.

[sul title=”Dermablend Loose Setting Powder” subheader=”Regularly $27 | $13.50 on Sept. 12″]
In need of a solid setting powder? Dermablend’s loose powder absorbs oil and sets foundation and concealer to make sure it won’t cake, crease, or melt, no matter the temperature of the day.

Want a pro tip? Try the setting powder before foundation—it sounds completely counterintuitive but it’s actually a great way to secure your foundation to your face. At less than $15, it’s definitely worth a shot.

[sul title=”St. Tropez Gradual Tan Tinted Everyday Body Lotion” subheader=”Regularly $30 | $15 on Sept. 12″]
Summer may be basically over, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop looking tan. Key word: looking. Fake-baking isn’t a good look and it’s terrible for your skin.

Thankfully, the experts at St. Tropez will help you get a healthy glow that doesn’t come with a side of increased skin cancer risk. Use this buildable body lotion every day to work up to whatever color that looks best on you. It’s streak-free, doesn’t smell, and won’t transfer—that’s an autumn win.

Smashbox has made iconic primers for years so this is a great chance to get your hands on one of these. Their Photo Finish primers really do work as they say, so it’s not surprising that Smashbox is the No. 1 face primer brand in the U.S.

The Pore Minimizing Primer is, unsurprisingly, oil-free and it mattifies and controls oil for up to eight hours, offering you smooth skin and an even finish from your foundation.

Hi, yes, hello, you should buy this. There are so many vitamin C serums on the market right now, and a lot of them are really great. But most of them are more than $45, which is this serum’s full price, aka when it’s not on sale.

So when it is on sale? You gotta get it. It uses ascorbic acid as its source of vitamin C, which retexturizes the skin, targets signs of aging, and brightens complexions.

I know, I know, another setting powder. But A) that’s what Ulta’s choosing to have on sale, and B) who doesn’t love options?

This setting powder is great for all-day setting power so your makeup won’t get smudgy or slide around. But it’s also ideal for baking, the process in which you place a large amount of setting powder over concealer to make it really set into the skin, without wrinkling or creasing. A two-in-one product that’s 50 percent off—heck yes.

My Top Picks for This Week…

[sul title=”Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette” subheader=”Regularly $49 | $24.50 on Sept. 16″]
Heading into week 3 of the sale, Ulta’s bringing some really nice deals. Case in point: the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. (Before you start to wonder, yes, it does actually smell like chocolate.)

The palette combines cocoa powder and traditional eyeshadow formulas, inspired by a facial treatment Too Faced’s co-founder received. There are 16 highly pigmented neutrals here (with a couple pops of color) in a mix of mattes and shimmers.

Hope in a Jar was a breakthrough when it first hit the shelves. When I first got into makeup and skincare, I remember thinking of Philosophy as a #goals brand, and years later, they’re still killing it!

The Renewed Hope in a Jar revolutionizes the original’s formula with a whipped texture and what Philosophy calls “clinically proven skin renewal technology.” That basically means a blend of AHAs, hyaluronate, and Asian fruit extract, which all team up to hydrate, moisturize, and renew

[sul title=”BECCA Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector” subheader=”Regularly $38 | $19 on Sept. 17″]
Major yassss for BECCA’s primers (and pretty much everything else they make).

This primer is ideal for my acne-prone, oily sisters—it soaks up excess oil, minimizes pore appearance, and mattifies all day long. In addition to being resistant to sweat, humidity, and whatever else comes it way, it’s also made without oil (duh), silicones, alcohol, and fragrances, so your skin will be happy and stay healthy all day long.

[sul title=”First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser” subheader=”Regularly $20 | $10 on Sept. 17″]
Oh man, First Aid Beauty is great. What more can I say? (Well, a lot more, as I’m sure you’ve picked up on.)

This is such a calming cleanser. It removes makeup and dirt without stripping the skin or making it red and irritated. It’s a gentle but powerful formula that uses botanical antioxidants to maintain the skin’s pH while cleansing. If you’re constantly feeling flushed or red, F.A.B. is FAB.

[sul title=”COVER FX Custom Enhancer & Glitter Drops” subheader=”Regularly $42-$44 | $21-$22 on Sept. 20″]
Oh so sparkly and shiny! If you haven’t picked up on it, liquid highlighters are a small passion of mine. They’re so incredible versatile mixed in to your face base (just made that up, but I like it), used for strobing when you really want to go, or dotted on the high points of your face for a subtle highlight.

The Enhancer drops come in seven colors, a few of which would make a really pretty cream-ish eyeshadow base. There’s also the Glitter Drops, which can be used under or over makeup, or as makeup itself. These drops are truly customizable, mixable, and versatile… and again, very shiny.

Value sets are the best for trying out things you’re not so sure about or for giving gifts when you can’t really think of anything else. The Origins Morning Must Haves set is no exception. It has mini sizes of four of Origins’ products and they’re perfect for trying out before you commit or for traveling if you already know you love them.

Sephora is about to host their Beauty Insider Appreciation Event and if you’re a Beauty Insider at Sephora, you should definitely get excited. (And if you aren’t a Beauty Insider, hurry up and sign up—it’s free!) In addition to holding the sale, Sephora is also updating their entire Beauty Insider program by adding new incentives and benefits for every level.
Regular Beauty Insiders who’ve joined at the free level earn one point per dollar they spend, get a birthday gift, and trial-size products and sets. VIBs, who must spend $350 in a calendar year to qualify will now earn 1.25 points for every dollar they spend, plus they’ll get a chance to try full-size products for free. Finally, Rouge members, who need to hit a thousand dollars a year to get in, will now get 1.5 points per every dollar, plus they’ll get a $100 Rouge Reward and those full-size products. In other words, there’s never been a better time to join Sephora’s Beauty Insider program.
Their Beauty Insider Appreciation Event started on Aug. 24 and Rouge members get 20 percent off everything in the store.
Starting on Aug. 30, VIBs and Beauty Insiders can shop the event; VIBs will get 15 percent off storewide, while Beauty Insiders will get 10 percent off everything.
Not sure what to buy? I picked out 60 of my favorite items from Sephora, ranging from skin and body care to makeup to the best tools. Go a little crazy—it’s on sale!

Where Soul Meets Body: Bath + Body

[sol title=”Rub it in, rub it in.” subheader=”Biossance 100% Squalane Oil”]
This squalane oil is made from renewable sugarcane and is one of my favorite picks to head-to-toe hydration.

Biossance at Sephora

The oil mimics the squalene (spelled differently!) that our bodies naturally make to add extra moisture into your skin, no matter your skin type. This is the best time to buy it since it’s normally a little pricey.

The title gives it away: This cream is for your bum bum. Tighten up the appearance of that derriere with this cream that takes its inspiration from the beaches of Brazil.
Sol de Janeiro at Sephora

It uses guaraná, a plant from the Amazon that contains caffeine. That caffeine works with cupuaçu butter, açaí, and coconut oil to hydrate, firm, and lift skin. Get thee to a beach: You’ll fit in just fine.

Fenty Beauty’s Stunna Lip Paint is a liquid lipstick that lasts up to 12 hours, and even though it’s matte, it doesn’t dry your lips out (at least not anymore than any other liquid lipstick). This shade was tested and picked out by Rihanna herself and truly looks good on everyone.

Too Faced at Sephora

It’s Sephora’s best-selling mascaras and the best-selling “prestige” mascara in the U.S., thanks to its volumizing and lengthening formula that coats every lash in the blackest black pigment. [sol title=”The eyeliner that isn’t coming off.” subheader=”Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner”]
There are plenty of liquid liners on the market that perform well, and trust me, I’ve tried a lot of them. But once I tried Stila’s Stay All Day liner, I never went back.
Stila at Sephora

The Black color is a true jet black that dries down matte without flaking. I’ve worn it swimming, showering, at weddings, and at funerals—it doesn’t move. And on my off days when I fall asleep in my makeup (a major offense, I know), it somehow lasts until the next morning. Plus the applicator is perfect for wings so sharp they’d cut a man—just how I like it.

Urban Decay

These pencils go on creamy unlike traditional pencils which tug at the delicate skin around your eyes and they’re blendable for about 30 seconds if you want to get a smudgy, smoky look. After that, it sets and lasts all day. Plus with 35 colors, there’s truly a color for every look.

[sol title=”When the store brand does it better…” subheader=”Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick”]
This is a time when the store brand really knocks it out of the park. The Sephora Collection is makeup made by Sephora. It has a major spot in the store…off to the side, so most people seem to ignore it (a mistake in general). But if you’ve been skipping out on their liquid lipsticks, you’re seriously missing out!
Sephora Collection

These insanely pigmented liquid lipsticks are some of my favorite. In matte, satin, and metallic finishes, there are 90—yes, 90—shades available. (“01 Always Red” is one of my go-to reds, along with the Fenty Stunna!)

[sol title=”The Holy Grail.” subheader=”SK-II Facial Treatment Essence”]
No, it’s not cheap. Yes, it is worth it. This is the skincare product to end all skincare products. The definition of iconic.

SK-II

The SK-II Facial Treatment Essence has been on shelves for over 35 years and it’s a favorite of beauty junkies, celebs, and estheticians alike. Use it regularly and you’re sure to see fewer wrinkles, less visible spots, refined skin texture, improved firmness, and more radiance. Sunday Riley at Sephora

This treatment is ideal for post-toner application. The lactic acid will gently but effectively exfoliate dead skin cells while reducing fine lines and other signs of aging. According to Sephora, 100 percent of women said their skin looked and felt smoother and had fewer lines and wrinkles; 100 percent of women also said it was the best skin-plumping product they’d ever used. If you don’t have good genes, you can buy them.

No, You Should Not Use Coconut Oil On Your Face

This past Christmas, my aunt gifted each of her sisters a jumbo jar of coconut oil because she loves it so much. She keeps a jar in the kitchen (it’s her favorite way to make light and airy stovetop popcorn) and a jar in the bathroom, where she slathers the coconut oil on her skin instead of regular lotion.
Despite my aunt’s enthusiasm, my mom—who has notoriously sensitive skin—was skeptical about using coconut oil, especially when I told her I used it to treat my dog’s seasonal eczema with mixed success. Still, she tried it one night instead of her favorite nighttime facial moisturizer. The next morning, my mother woke up with a rash of angry, red bumps all over the lower part of her face and neck.
My mom is far from the only one to suffer this same fate, which is why, to put it bluntly, I’m completely flummoxed by the fact that coconut oil continues to be touted as a great natural facial skincare solution.
We talked to dermatologists to find out why you shouldn’t use coconut oil on your face. Here’s what they had to say.

Coconut oil is comedogenic.

Coconut oil has one of the highest comedogenic ratings, which means that it could be a big problem for sensitive or blemish-prone skin,” explains dermatologist Paul Dean, MD, creator of Skin Resource.MD. “This means coconut oil can’t penetrate the pores and actually can suffocate your skin and will clog your pores because it sits on top of the skin.”
What is a comedogenic rating? Essentially, beauty products are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on their pore-clogging potential, with 1 being the least likely to clog your pores, and 5 being reserved for the worst offenders.
The scale doesn’t mean that every single product that’s considered highly comedogenic will clog your pores and cause breakouts, though. A lot of factors—like pore size and how oily or dry your skin is—also affect how your face will react to comedogenic products.
But a higher rating does increase the likelihood that a comedogenic ingredient, like coconut oil (which scores a whopping 4 out of 5 on the scale!) will cause a negative reaction.

Coconut Oil for Your Face: Debunking the Myths

A quick Google search reveals that many people believe coconut oil is basically facial skincare magic. Even dermatologists (skincare experts, no less!) have hopped on the coconut-oil-for-your-face bandwagon.
So do these purported claims have any merit? Here’s what our experts have to say.

Coconut Oil for Face Acne

Myth: Coconut oil can get rid of acne.
Reality:While coconut oil is soothing and contains lauric acid, it is never a good idea to put any oil on broken skin. It can clog the pores and irritate the skin and make the condition worse,” says Berenice Rothenberg, a certified clinical electrologist (CCE) and licensed cosmetologist practicing in New York.
[pullquote align=”center”]According to dermatologists, few topical collagen skin supplements live up to the hype, and coconut oil is no exception.[/pullquote]
Rothenberg is right; coconut oil does contain high levels of lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid with antimicrobial properties. And lauric acid has been shown to reduce inflammation from acne, hence the claims that the lauric acid in coconut oil will result in clearer skin.
It’s also true that coconut oil is a good antibacterial agent. In addition to being full of vitamin E, it also contains other proteins and caprylic acids that are known for their antifungal properties, says Dean. And since bacteria causes acne, coconut oil should be great for getting rid of bumps…right?
Sadly, Dean says coconut oil “will actually act as a barrier and can cause or worsen acne-prone skin.”
Alternative solutions for face acne: If you’ve turned to coconut oil for face acne, there are better ways to treat your acne. The best thing you can do to prevent acne according to Rothenberg? “Never go to sleep with your makeup on!”
We love a good double cleanse, but for that first oil cleanse, avoid the coconut oil. Instead, Dean recommends grapeseed oil or hemp seed oil to remove makeup at the end of the day because, despite being oils, both have a low comedogenic rating. Rather avoid oils altogether? Another alternative is micellar water, a French skincare product that can be used as an all-in-one cleanser and makeup remover. (It really is a skincare miracle!) You can even make your own micellar water at home if you use herbalist Rebekah Epling’s recipe.
After removing makeup with a makeup remover, you still need to cleanse your skin with a face wash that’s right for your skin type. For acne-prone skin, choose a face wash that contains benzoyl peroxide, an antibacterial agent that helps dry the skin to treat pimples. Or if you’re looking for an all-natural facial cleanser, try a face wash that contains witch hazel or lavender, both of which inhibit bacterial growth, according to Epling.

Coconut Oil as Facial Moisturizer

Myth: Coconut oil is a great facial moisturizer.
Reality: “Coconut oil is primarily made up of saturated fats. This is great for repairing your skin’s natural barrier and trapping in moisture. Because of these properties it soothes rashes, combats dry, flaky skin, and speeds up the healing process,” says Dean.
Sounds great, right? Well, from the neck down, coconut oil is a great moisturizer. But on your face? Not so much, says Dean.
In fact, the very properties that make coconut oil work so well on your ashy elbows and cracked heels are the same properties that make it less than ideal for your face. Though it’ll make quick work of those areas where your skin is thicker, it’s just too heavy for most skin types, leading to clogged pores.
Alternatives to using coconut oil for facial moisturizer: Ideally, facial moisturizers should keep your skin hydrated while remaining light enough that they don’t clog your pores.
Aloe vera gel is a great all-natural moisturizer for all skin types. Like coconut oil, it can help soothe skin irritation and help wounds heal faster, but unlike coconut oil, it won’t clog your pores. Just make sure you look for aloe vera gel products that actually contain aloe vera—many of the aloe products sold by big-box retailers have been found to contain little or no aloe vera!
And, says Rothenberg, don’t forget the power of drinking the daily recommended amount of water to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

Coconut Oil for Face Wrinkles

Myth: Coconut oil can turn back time and minimize face wrinkles.
Reality: Our bodies’ store of collagen, the protein that helps skin maintain elasticity, naturally depletes as we age. Because of its moisturizing properties, coconut oil is purported to be a great collagen-boosting supplement to improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles.
But according to dermatologists, few topical collagen skin supplements live up to the hype, and coconut oil is no exception. “All oils, when applied to the skin, give the appearance of smoothing out lines,” says Rothenberg. “But these oils do not penetrate the basic layer and cannot produce collagen.”
Alternatives to coconut oil for face wrinkles: While coconut oil won’t work to get rid of wrinkles, there are several things that do work to reverse early signs of aging—no expensive creams or serums required.
For one, it’s no secret that UV rays can cause serious damage to your skin, so stay out of the sun as much as possible. I know how hard that can be for some of you sun goddesses, so if you must get your tan on, always wear a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF (even if it’s overcast).
And, if you’re a smoker (even if it’s just the occasional cigarette), kicking the habit is key if you want to maintain a youthful glow. Plus, going smoke-free is just plain good for your overall health.
[pullquote align=”center”]“Look for coconut oil as an added ingredient in various skincare products so you can reap the benefits and use a product that can be used on most skin types.”
Paul Dean, MD[/pullquote]
Finally, your daily cardio may be doing more than keeping your booty toned; according to recent studies, daily exercise may actually help reverse the signs of aging.
In addition to these lifestyle changes, getting more of certain antioxidants in your diet may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. In particular, vitamin C may help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your face.

Coconut Oil on Your Face Overnight

Myth: Coconut oil is a good overnight emollient.
Reality: If you can’t even use coconut oil as a reliable daytime moisturizer because of its comedogenic properties, you sure as heck can’t leave coconut oil on your face overnight for eight hours. (Okay, who am I kidding? I get a full 10.)
Using coconut oil overnight is a great way to get clogged pores and wake up to a breakout. Good morning, sunshine, indeed.
Alternatives to coconut oil on your face overnight: Not all oils are bad for your face. Grapeseed oil and hemp seed oil aren’t just great makeup removers; they’re also wonderful as overnight emollients to soften skin as you sleep. “Jojoba oil has a low comedogenic rating as well,” says Epling, “It’s ideal as a carrier for other essential essences, like lavender or tea tree oil, to use overnight.”

Coconut oil can help other skin conditions.

I know I’ve been giving coconut oil a bad rap so far, but coconut oil actually is great for a variety of skin conditions (that aren’t on your face).
In particular, coconut oil was shown to alleviate physical symptoms of atopic dermatitis—a skin condition that causes an itchy red rash—in pediatric patients. Another study found that in addition to reducing the appearance of atopic dermatitis, coconut oil was effective at combating colonization of Staphylococcus aureus, which produces a certain toxin that causes the immune system to react by breaking out in dry, scaly patches.
Another study found that coconut oil was as effective as mineral oil in treating xerosis, a condition similar to atopic dermatitis that also causes dry, scaly skin.
Finally, a 2010 study of animal subjects also should that wounds treated with virgin coconut oil healed much faster than those that were not treated with coconut oil. So, if you have a scrape or cut and don’t have Neosporin handy, a dab of coconut oil (and a cute bandage) may help your wound heal faster.

The Bottom Line on Coconut Oil

So here’s the deal: For a very, very small number of people, coconut oil may help skin conditions. As Dean puts it, “Using coconut oil directly on your skin can be extremely beneficial, but not good for everyone.”
For instance, he says that for people with severely dry skin, coconut oil may help restore moisture content.
But for most of us, using coconut oil on our faces will likely result in more breakouts and clogged pores.
All is not lost, however. If you absolutely must have coconut oil as part of your facial skincare routine, Dean says to “look for coconut oil as an added ingredient in various skincare products so you can reap the benefits and use a product that can be used on most skin types.”
The bottom line on coconut oil? Skip using coconut oil on your face, and stick to using coconut oil as a delicious addition to stovetop popcorn instead.

Common Skincare Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Skin

Here’s the deal: You only have one bag of skin to carry you throughout this mortal plane. And you’re probably treating it like dirt! What are you doing?!
Skincare is definitely having a moment right now (which I love), but in some circles it’s still considered high maintenance to do, well, any maintenance on it whatsoever. In the same way that we need to eat well and exercise to take care of our bodies, it’s also crucial that we take care of our skin—after all, it’s our largest organ.
But maybe you’re reading this and thinking Hey, I do wash my face! Well, that’s great! Really. But it’s still highly likely you’re making these common skincare mistakes. It’s time to up your skincare game and learn how to truly take care of your skin.

You’re soaking up the rays in all the wrong ways.

You probably remember your mom getting after you to put on sunscreen. And you probably begrudgingly dashed it on, failed to rub it in properly, and never reapplied, right? Well hopefully now you know better than that, but even the most serious SPF devotees can make some big sunscreen mistakes. And unlike a small error that might lead to just a breakout, failing to protect yourself from the sun the right way can increase your risk for skin cancer. Let’s go through some basic sunscreen rules:
You need to use a broad spectrum sunscreen.
Here’s a fun tip you may not have learned: SPF only refers to a how well a sunscreen will protect you from the sun’s UVB rays. And it’s important that you’re protected from those rays. UVB rays are what cause sunburns and most skin cancers; plus the more sunburns you get in your lifetime, the higher your risk of skin cancer. But that’s leaving out those pesky (and incredibly damaging) UVA rays. In order to get full protection from the sun, you need to use a broad spectrum sunscreen; any broad spectrum sunscreen will say that it is on the bottle.
If you’d rather not sort through sunscreens to find out which ones will really protect you, we did the leg work for you:

Neutrogena Beach Defense Water + Sun Protection SPF 70

You don’t need to go expensive to get a solid broad spectrum sunscreen. This has been rated one of the best sunscreens in the United States and it’s Amazon’s No. 1 best seller in sunscreens. Plus, since it’s oil-free you won’t need to worry about any body breakouts.

Neutrogena Beach Defense Water + Sun Protection SPF 70, $6.39 from Amazon

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Sensitive SPF 30+

Do like the Aussies do with Blue Lizard, a physical sunscreen that happens to be water-resistant, paraben-free, and, of course, broad spectrum. It’s rated a Top Choice from the Environmental Working Group, thanks to its high-quality ingredients that won’t hurt you or the environment.

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Sensitive SPF 30+, $14.23 from Amazon
You need to wear sunscreen every. single. day.
Yes, really. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy out. Unless you’re only leaving the house between the hours of 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. (whatcha doin?), sunscreen is a must. The sun’s UVA rays can penetrate car windows and windows in your home and office, so even if you’re just walking from your house to car to office, you still need to apply sunscreen.
If you’re used to thick, gloopy sunscreens that sit on your skin giving you the dreaded white cast, try these incredible sunscreens that’ll go on your face smoothly, leaving a perfect palette for makeup (or not!):

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40

This is an incredible sunscreen. It’s actually clear so you’ll never have to deal with a weirdly white glow on your face and it goes on matte so you won’t have the sunscreen shine. Plus, it doesn’t smell like coconuts.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40, $32 from Sephora

Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 42 For Face

Shiseido is a Japanese brand known for incredible skincare, makeup, and makeup tools (their eyelash curler is a cult favorite). This sunscreen is oil-free and incredibly light, making it the perfect last step of your skincare routine and ideal for a base for your makeup.

Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 42 for Face, $34 from Sephora

Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 PA+++

Tatcha is another brand from Japan whose skincare products have really shaken things up. This sunscreen is derm-tested with high quality ingredients that leave a weightless, silky finish. The PA+++ part of this product name comes from the Japanese sunscreen grading system, wherein each additional plus sign informs buyers about UVA ray protection. As mentioned, SPF refers to UVB protection so when you buy this Tatcha sunscreen, you know you’re getting both forms of oh-so necessary protection.

You need to reapply sunscreen every two hours.
Yes, really. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy out. Wait, this is the same stuff we said above. There’s a reason for that: It’s still true! Applying sunscreen only once is what leads to sunburns and skin damage. Even if you’re using the highest SPF in the world (which, by the way, is kind of a waste), you still need to reapply—very carefully—every two hours.
Can’t fit a giant bottle of sunscreen in your work bag or purse? We got you. These sunscreen sets are full of travel sizes that easy for on-the-go use:

COOLA 4 Piece Organic Suncare Travel Set

This four-piece travel set (well, five, if you count the cute bag) comes with an SPF 30 face sunscreen, SPF 30 sunscreen spray, SPF 30 Liplux lip balm, and their Environmental Repair Plus Radical After Sun Lotion on the off chance you do get burned. Take it all with you when you leave the house and you’ll be ready for anything the sun throws at you.

Supergoop! At Play Tote Value Set

We love a good value set, obviously. This is another five-piece set (four SPF products + a great bag) and it contains everything you need for the sunniest of days. Supergoop! has included their SPF 50 Everyday Sunscreen, SPF 50 Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C, SPF 40 Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen, and SPF 30 Mintfusion Lip Balm.

You need to use more than you think.
Your one pump of sunscreen for your entire body just isn’t cutting it. Sure, it’s better than nothing, but it’s not really doing you many favors. Dermatologists recommend you use 1 ounce for your whole body—which, conveniently, is about the size of those little glasses you had lying around at parties in college. Alternatively, head into your kitchen and look at your measuring spoons. Two tablespoons is how much you need to use from head to toe; a nickel-sized glob is how much you should use for your face.
For convenience’s sake, you may as well have a giant bottle at home to apply before you head out the door. Our favorite picks for protection in bulk:

Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen with Cellular Response Technology SPF 50 (18 oz)

Yes, you can now have the biggest bottle of sunscreen we’ve ever seen. It comes with a full-on pump to make sure you aren’t skimping out with a squeeze. This water-resistant, broad spectrum formula is ideal from nose to toes and despite being incredibly lightweight, it’s effective and moisturizing.

Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen with Cellular Response Technology SPF 50 (18 oz), $48 from Amazon

Banana Boat Sunscreen Sport Family Size SPF 50 (12 oz)

Grab the family size of the traditional Banana Boat sunscreen we’ve all been using since childhood. On the plus side, this is the sport performance formula, meaning it’ll resist water and sweat for 80 minutes. Additionally, it’s safe for coral reefs since it’s made without oxybenzone and octinoxate, two effective but damaging-for-reef ingredients found in many sunscreens.

Banana Boat Sunscreen Sport Family Size SPF 50 (12 oz), $9.44 from Amazon

You’re skipping a step before sleep.

If you don’t wear makeup, feel free to skip this. But if you do, you’re most likely skipping a very crucial step in your skincare routine: actually taking your makeup off.
Maybe you wash your face every single night, and that’s great. That’s more than great. But taking off your eye makeup before you start cleansing is key. Before moving onto the next step in your skincare routine, you should do the previous steps to the best of your ability—walk before you run, you know?
So please, do your skin a favor and use a dedicated makeup remover before you use a face wash. You’ll notice a difference right away. Our favorite makeup removers are so great, in fact, you’ll be happy you picked one up:

Micellar Water

There are actually a few really great micellar waters on the market now and we’re happy to recommend (almost) all of them. Micellar water is an ideal makeup remover because it really does breakdown most makeup and actually removes it but it does so without any harsh synthetic chemicals that can dry out your skin.

La Roche-Posay Micellar Cleansing Water for Sensitive Skin, $7.99 from Amazon
Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water, $6.61 from Amazon

Lancôme Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover

Historically, a favorite among many makeup-wearers of the world. Shake it up to combine the oil in the product with the water to lift away even the most waterproof of waterproof mascaras. Safe for contact lens wearers too!

Lancôme Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover, $30 from Sephora

You’re using this one common product.

You may notice in that list of favorite makeup removers that we didn’t list any makeup removing wipes. There’s a reason for that: They’re terrible.
Sure, if you stumble into bed late at night not feeling your best, it’s better to use a wipe than nothing at all. But if you’re of sound mind and decision making, don’t open that pack of wipes.
Makeup wipes don’t really clean your skin. Instead, they’ll smear the makeup all over your face. They also have some questionable ingredients, like preservatives that can irritate the skin and emulsifiers that can dry your skin out. Some of those preservatives are chemicals that release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen and allergen.
If you use a wipe and don’t immediately wash your face with an actual cleanser, you’re letting that stuff hang out on your face all night. Do better for yourself and stick with one of the dedicated makeup removers we suggested above. And then get to cleaning—properly.

You’re only cleansing once.

That’s right: washing your face just once isn’t cutting it. Granted, there are some really great cleansers and face washes out there and they do some really great things, but if you want to get serious about skin care, you need to learn the art of the double cleanse.
Double cleansing is the new M.O. if you want skin that’s actually clean. See, a lot of the dirt, environmental toxins, impurities, and other bits of junk that get on our face throughout the day aren’t so water-soluble. So when you’re using a foaming cleanser, you’re certainly cleaning off some of it—but a lot of it is left behind too. Enter an oil cleanser.
To truly, actually, really cleanse your face of the daily junk, you’ll need to use an oil cleanser first to get rid of the oil-soluble impurities. Put the oil onto a dry face and massage, then add water to transform it into a milky substance, like a runny lotion. The oil in these cleansers attracts much more of the dirt hiding in your pores, pulls it out, and as it mixes with water, emulsifies to give your skin a nice little hug of hydration. Then follow up with that water-soluble cleanser to get rid of the excess oil before moving onto your next skincare steps.
Not sure where to start? Here are our top oil cleansing picks:

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

This is the ideal oil cleanser, in my mind. It’s a solid that, when applied to dry skin (that is, skin without water on it—it’s actually great for all skin types), emulsifies into an oil that’ll whisk off any makeup, dirt, and impurities. Follow it up with a great water-based cleanser and you’ll feel an immediate difference.

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, $29.50 from Sephora

L’Occitane Shea Face Cleansing Oil

Feel very fancy with this French cleansing oil from L’Occitane. With 5 percent shea oil, this is an incredibly moisturizing oil cleanser that’s also incredibly effective. Plus, we really like the pump formulation that will ensure you don’t accidentally use too much.

L’Occitane Shea Face Cleansing Oil, $24 from Amazon

Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil

Go a little more budget with this 100 percent grapeseed oil that will dissolve the toughest-to-remove makeup and soften your skin—without an oily finish. Plus without any artificial fragrances or colors, you can rest easy knowing this is a great choice for your sensitive skin.

Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil, $7.79 from Amazon

You take scrubbing a little too seriously.

Exfoliation is the trick to clear, soft, smooth skin: the skin everyone wants to have naturally. In years past—think middle school years perusing the aisles at Walgreens—you probably reached for a scrub. In particular, the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Who didn’t use that at some point? Unfortunately, it’s absolutely terrible for your skin. In fact, in 2016, two women brought a suit against St. Ives because the scrub includes crushed walnut shells. Guess what happens when you vigorously rub crushed walnut shells against your skin? Microtears in your skin. That can cause inflammation, redness, pain, and even infection if you’re too vigorous.
Scrubs in general aren’t the best way to exfoliate. There are some incredible microdermabrasion exfoliators out there (we’re talking about you, Dr. Brandt), but most scrubs are made with harsh ingredients that ultimately damage skin in the long run. And if you try to DIY one, you might not be much better off: Many exfoliator recipes floating around the internet advocate including ingredients like salt or baking soda. They actually want you to put baking soda on your face. Please, don’t put baking soda on your face.
Instead, skip the scrubs—unless they’re dermatologist-approved, of course. Look to chemical exfoliation. It’s not as scary as it sounds. It typically involves alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids and fruit-based enzymes to gently slough off dead skin cells. Used properly (aka, not every single day), these chemical exfoliators are much more effective.
If you haven’t jumped on the chemical exfoliator train, here are our top picks:

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial

This mask is a dream exfoliator. With 25 percent AHA and 2 percent BHA (plus a blend of glycolic, tartaric, lactic, citric, and salicylic acids), this is an incredibly effective exfoliating mask. It breaks down gross dead skin cells to give you a glow you only thought was possible after a professional facial. Use only once a week for just 20 minutes to get results you’ll love.

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial, $80 from Sephora

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Smooth & Flawless: Peel + Moisturize

Get a chemical peel at home with these amazing daily peel pads. There are 14 pads here that you use every day. After two weeks with these glycolic, salicylic, and malic acid pads, you’ll see a huge difference in the glow factor of your skin. Use the included Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion moisturizer for intense hydration.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Smooth & Flawless: Peel + Moisturize, $37 from Amazon

Pixi Glow Tonic

This is an incredible but gentler dupe for Biologique Recherche’s P50 Lotion, the cult status fave that can run upwards of $100. The 5 percent glycolic acid makes this an ideal exfoliator: it’ll certainly give you a glow, but thanks to the aloe and ginseng that’s also included, you won’t get irritated.

Pixi Glow Tonic, $36.20 from Amazon
And if you simply require the scrubby feeling mechanical exfoliation can bring, here’s what we recommend:

Dr. Brandt Skincare Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator

Age defying sounds pretty nice, right? Dr. Brandt’s microdermabrasion exfoliators will definitely give you the scrub factor but thanks to its lactic acid, which acts as a chemical exfoliator, it doesn’t need to be a harsh scrub. Plus with soothing botanical-derived ingredients, your skin will be soothed while it’s being exfoliated.

Dr. Brandt Skincare Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator, $48 from Amazon

Tatcha The Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder

This physical exfoliator is so gentle you might wonder if it’s even doing anything. Fret not—it certainly is. The Japanese rice bran that gives it its exfoliating power is non-abrasive and the rice and papaya enzymes in the product turn into a beautiful foam that will simultaneously exfoliate and soften your skin. Plus, thanks to a combo of green tea, rice, and algae, you’ll be getting that radiance you see in magazines.

Tatcha The Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder, $84 from Amazon

You’re skipping hydration.

Let’s say you’ve seen the light here. You’re down to use a dedicated makeup remover. You’re ready to double cleanse. You are now a sunscreen queen. You are taking care of your skin like a pro—from the outside.
But what about the inside? That’s where hydration comes in.
There are plenty of incredible moisturizers out there—in fact, we rounded up the best ones for various skin types and budgets right here—but hydration is another story. They’re not actually the same thing. Some products do work on hydrating your skin, and it’s great to use those. But if you’re noticing that you look a little lackluster, you may have dehydrated skin. And the best way to cure that is by drinking water.
Listen, we all know that you’re supposed to drink your eight glasses a day. Some nutritionists even recommend drinking half your bodyweight in ounces of water every day is a lot to ask. But most Americans aren’t even coming close. Hydrate your body, hydrate your skin. One way to make it easier for you is to constantly have a bottle of water at your side—and no, we don’t mean a one-use water bottle from the gas station. Try these instead:

S’well Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle

We’re still not over the marble trend. Not sure why. It just looks good with everything. So when we saw S’well, rulers of the water bottle world, had a marble bottle, we had to get it. The double-walled construction of S’well bottles keeps water cold for 24 hours, so there’s really no excuse for not chugging it.

S’well Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle, $35 from Amazon

Ello Pure BPA-Free Glass Water Bottle

Skip the BPA worries by just going glass. You can feel safe leaving it in your car on accident without worries of gross chemicals leaching into your water, while the silicone sleeve protects it from bumps and drops. Even better, it’s dishwasher safe. We’re in.

Ello Pure BPA-Free Glass Water Bottle, $9.99 from Amazon

OMORC Fruit Infuser Water Bottle

Sick of plain water? We don’t blame you. It can get boring drinking the same thing all day. Grab yourself a infuser water bottle. You can add in any fruit, veggies, herbs, or spices you’re into (here are the recipes we recommend) and sip it down.

OMORC Fruit Infuser Water Bottle, $11.99 from Amazon

You’re a new product junkie.

I’m guilty of this one myself. I get new products a lot: sometimes when we partner with brands, I’m subscribed to Boxycharm and FabFitFun, and I’m VIB Rouge at Sephora. Trust me, I’m a product junkie.
But there is one rule that all product junkies must know. The top rule of skincare: Don’t try more than one new thing at once.
If you’ve gotten excited about what we’re talking about here (and I hope you are!), make sure you slowly incorporate your newfound product loves into your skincare routine. If a product ends up interacting poorly with your current routine, you won’t know which one it is if you slapped three new products on your face last night. Similarly, if you have a reaction, you won’t be able to pinpoint what caused it if you’ve tried a whole new routine in the last week.
Go ahead, be a product junkie if that’s what you’re into. In fact, I encourage it. Just be smart about it.

Can Collagen Supplements Really Give You Better Skin?

No longer am I the carefree twenty-something who wore SPF 15 (when I remembered to wear sunscreen at all) so I could “get a good base.” Now that I’m in my early—okay, mid—thirties, I apply lotions, creams, and serums constantly. I’ll try just about anything that promises to reduce the number of fine lines and (dare I put it in writing?) wrinkles that are slowly appearing on my face.
Which is why I am so interested in the current collagen craze. There are a host of collagen supplements that promise to restore and rejuvenate the skin, but do they really work?
I spoke with Paul Dean, MD, a San Diego-based dermatologist (and creator of Skin Resource.MD cosmeceuticals) to find out if collagen supplements really can give you better skin or if it’s just wishful thinking. Here’s what he had to say.

What is collagen?

“Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies,” Dean explains. “It’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, the digestive system, and tendons.”
Collagen is what helps give our skin strength and elasticity, and it’s what replaces dead skin cells. Unfortunately, our body’s collagen production decreases as we age, often starting as early as a woman’s twenties and peaking around menopause.
And collagen depletion doesn’t just mean more fine lines. It can also affect bone and joint health, which is why it is so important to not only protect the collagen stores your body currently has but to stimulate collagen production, too.
Though collagen does naturally decrease over time, certain activities can speed up collagen depletion. “Eating high amounts of sugar, excessive sun exposure, and smoking decreases our collagen production,” says Dean. “So as we age we need to increase our [collagen] levels to slow down the aging process from the inside out.”

A Quick Guide to Collagen Supplements

According to research done by the Nutrition Business Journal, Americans spent almost $100 million on collagen supplements in 2017. That must mean they work, right? Don’t hold your breath.
According to Dean, “Collagen supplements simply won’t replace or stimulate new collagen growth in the skin.”
Still, some research suggests that collagen supplements may improve wrinkles and skin elasticity. According to one study, significant improvement in skin elasticity was shown in participants who took a daily blend of collagen peptides and antioxidants. However, the study was conducted over a short period with a small number of participants and relied heavily on participant questionnaires. So the results, while promising, are in no way definitive proof that collagen supplements actually work.
[pullquote align=”center”]There is some evidence that collagen drinks and other ingestible supplements actually do improve skin elasticity and moisture.[/pullquote]
If you still want to try a collagen supplement, it helps to know a little bit about how collagen supplements—especially powders, drinks, and pills—are made before you buy. And vegetarians and vegans, I’ll warn you now: You’re not going to like it.
These types of collagen supplements are made from animal proteins that are often derived from the hides and bones of cows, chickens, and other animals. This is actually the same way that gelatin (yes, the stuff that makes your Jell-O jiggle) is made. When the meat cuts that contain the most collagen (bones, tendons, fatty connective tissue) are cooked slowly to a certain temperature, the collagen begins to melt and eventually forms a thick gelatin, which is what most collagen supplements (and gelled snacks) are made of. The more you know, right?
There are hundreds of collagen supplements on the market. Some are focused on collagen as a dietary supplement, but most are found in the skincare aisle, promising more youthful-looking skin by improving elasticity and moisture. Here’s a quick, research-backed guide to help determine if various collagen supplements are worth the cost.

Collagen Powders, Vitamins, and Drinks

Collagen powders are a popular collagen supplement because they are usually tasteless and can be added to everything from your morning oatmeal and coffee to your evening meal. Because they can be added to just about anything—and because one scoop usually provides the recommended supplemental amount of collagen—collagen powders are often pricier than supplements in pill form.
Collagen drinks are similar oral supplements and are often marketed as collagen water or collagen juice. These are most often derived from fish (still not vegan, but if you’re a pescatarian, collagen drinks are usually okay to imbibe) and are usually mixed with other flavors to nix the fishy aftertaste. There is some evidence that collagen drinks and other ingestible supplements actually do improve skin elasticity and moisture, but Dean says oral collagen supplements, including powders and drinks, won’t replace or stimulate new collagen growth in your skin.
“In fact,” Dean continues, “your body won’t absorb the collagen [from supplements and drinks] as a replacement, and it will just pass through your system as a protein.”
Even if you’re not a vegan, there are other issues to consider when taking oral collagen supplements derived from animals. Some doctors and scientists are concerned that there’s a risk that collagen supplements may contain high levels of heavy metals, which are often found in processed meats. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so it is up to the consumer (that’s you) to fact-check a supplement brand’s claims. Some supplement brands, like Vital Proteins, do use grass-fed, hormone-free beef and wild-caught fish to reduce the risk of harmful chemicals in their supplements.
Plus, Dean warns, “Many supplements can cause allergic reactions since the supplements are usually derived from animal sources and your body may become sensitive to the foreign substance.”
While some studies have shown promise that collagen powder supplements may improve skin’s elasticity and texture, Dean doesn’t put much stock in these claims and says, “If you want to stimulate collagen production and protect the collagen you have, stick to using products with hyaluronic acid, peptides, and retinol while wearing sunscreen and eating healthy on a daily basis.”

Collagen Creams and Serums

I don’t like being the bearer of bad news, but that expensive collagen cream you’ve been slathering on your face day and night is probably nothing more than a fancy moisturizer.
According to Dean,“Collagen applied topically to the skin will not replace missing collagen in the skin because the collagen molecule is simply too large to penetrate into the deep layers of the skin.”
“Collagen proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids (smaller organic compounds that combine to form proteins),” Dean continues. “When this long strand is broken down into short segments of three to five amino acids, these small bundles are called peptides and have been shown to stimulate collagen production.”
Some research does show that peptides added to certain skincare products may possibly help boost the production of collagen to help restore skin tone and texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and increase skin’s moisture and elasticity due to their small nature.
[pullquote align=”center”]Almost 42 percent of dermal filler treatments administered from 2002 to 2010 were collagen injections.[/pullquote]
Still, the best “anti-aging” products to use on your skin are those containing hyaluronic acid (a hydrating substance found naturally in the body), peptides, and retinol (a compound derived from vitamin A), Dean tells HealthyWay. Hyaluronic acid actually boosts collagen synthesis and helps skin retain moisture.
“When retinol and other retinoids come into contact with skin, the enzymes in the body convert it into retinoic acid. Retinoic acid then works to increase cell turnover, which stimulates collagen and elastin production,” says Dean. “Because [it encourages] healthy skin cell turnover, retinol can treat and prevent multiple skin conditions from acne and eczema to dark spots and wrinkles”

Collagen Injections

Collagen injections were all the rage 15 years ago. In fact, almost 42 percent of dermal filler treatments administered from 2002 to 2010 were collagen injections. But Dean says that most dermatologists no longer use collagen injections. Instead they favor proven dermal fillers containing—surprise!—hyaluronic acid.
There are also laser treatments that can be used to stimulate collagen on the surface, but laser treatments are extremely expensive and really should be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes to promote collagen naturally,” says Dean.

How to Naturally Preserve Collagen Production

If you don’t want to spend a fortune on collagen supplements that may or may not improve your skin’s elasticity, there are a few things you can do to reduce collagen depletion without spending a dime (and some will even save you money!).

Quit smoking.

First of all, we’re in what I like to call the judgment-free tree. If you’re a smoker, I’m not here to make you feel bad about it. After all, you likely know all the health risks associated with smoking already. But you can add one more to the list: collagen depletion.
Smoking depletes collagen production and directly contributes to premature aging. So one of the best things you can do for your skin is to stop smoking. And hey, I know it’s tough to quit, so if you need help to quit smoking, contact Freedom From Smoking, a program sponsored by the American Lung Association, for more information.

Reduce sun exposure.

As you may have guessed, I am a sun goddess. I love to be bronzed more than just about anything. But repeated sun exposure can seriously break down your body’s natural collagen stores, aging skin much more quickly.
Luckily, this an easy one to fix! Wear sunscreen daily, even if it’s cloudy out. Not sure what kind of sunscreen you should get? Here’s a handy video on the ABCs of SPF. In addition to wearing your daily SPF, stay indoors when UV rays are at their most damaging, and opt instead to head outside early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize sun damage.

Improve your diet.

Finally, some good news: “Certain foods can increase collagen in our bodies,” says Dean.
Dean recommends eating fish, like salmon, that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Additionally, avocados are high in omega-3s and vitamin E, which also has a positive effect on skin aging. Red vegetables such as red bell peppers and citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, which promotes collagen production. Because dark green vegetables and sweet potatoes contain high levels of vitamin A (which is where retinol comes from), they’re also an excellent addition to an anti-aging diet.
“Not only are these favorable vitamins to consume,” says Dean, “but any of them are also are good to apply topically to promote healthy skin.” Seriously, try this moisturizing (and probably delicious) recipe for a sweet potato face mask.

Get more exercise.

Exercise can minimize your risk for heart disease and diabetes, and now a new study shows that when combined with certain dietary supplements, exercise may even boost the body’s natural collagen production. In the study, participants who ate a vitamin C–enriched gelatin supplement prior to intermittent exercise doubled the amount of collagen protein in their blood, unlike participants who took the placebo.

The Bottom Line on Collagen Supplements

Ultimately, more research needs to be done to determine whether collagen supplements really work. Personally, I’d rather save my hard-earned cash for skincare products that are proven to be 100 percent effective.
Still, most derms agree that most collagen creams and serums aren’t bad for your skin, and they can prove to be great moisturizers even if they don’t do a whole lot for collagen production.
The best thing you can do for your skin? Take care of it the way you take care of the rest of your body: by eating well, using sunscreen, and getting regular exercise.
