Is there anything more beautiful than healthy, glowing skin? You’ve probably looked in the mirror, maybe after splurging on a facial or taking a restorative yoga class, and noticed an inexplicable radiance. Your skin looked perfectly sun-kissed, with a bright complexion and dewy shine. Why can’t your skin look like this all the time? Here’s a skincare secret: You can get that glowing skin every day, with a diligent skincare regimen and the right arsenal of products and cosmetics. Here are the ones that will help you get your glow on.
A single product that claims to do seven different things (act as a serum, eye cream, anti-aging cream, moisturizer, brightener, and more) immediately had me skeptical. But just one application of the MMXV Infinitude cream got me hooked.
The gluey formula, infused with fermented white truffle, falernum grape extract, and olive extract, blended into the skin surprisingly nicely. While my skin absorbed it in just a few minutes, the cream gave my complexion an elegant luminescence that lasted longer than the effects of most facials.
After trying this scrub a few times, I’m still not sure whether I prefer putting it on or taking it off. The snow-white paste blankets my face in the most beautiful botanical scent, while the exfoliants are so fine, they practically tickle away dead skin and build-up in pores.
But what’s revealed when you wash it away is a smooth, shining complexion that feels hydrated and fresh. I could use this stuff every day.
It’s tough for the natural glow of your skin to shine through layers of pollution that build up over time. Enter this serum from ASARAI. It uses natural antioxidants (like bisabolol extract from chamomile and seaweed) and vitamins to destroy free radicals on the skin. A few drops of this serum, which had a lotion-like consistency, gave me a velvet glow akin to the best Instagram filters.
You know how it can take a couple of tries before you decide whether you like a skincare product? With this serum, it was love at first pump.
The famous, spa-like Blue Lagoon outside of Reykjavík, Iceland, has built a reputation as the go-to place to reap the healthy properties of mineral rich water and soil. Fortunately, you don’t have to hop on a plane to experience the skin-enhancing benefits of volcanic earth. This lava scrub mask, straight from the natural attraction itself, features geothermal seawater, silica, and granular lava that help remove dead skin.
After wearing the coarse black mask for 15 minutes, my skin felt smooth and even, and my natural radiance peeked through. It still doesn’t beat a trip to Iceland—but it’s a pretty good way to look like you were there.
While I’m normally a mix-and-match kinda girl when it comes to skincare products, the entire Katess collection won me over for its simple assortment of products that play really well together. (Not to mention the packaging that looks straight out of a Wes Anderson film.)
The Japanese brand takes a four-step approach to skincare. It starts with a cleansing foam that bursts with a citrus scent, and leaves the skin feeling equal parts clean and hydrated. Then, you apply a “treatment essence” (basically a toner made with sake) that seemed to suck up all the oil. The day serum completely rehydrated the skin and even plumped it up a little bit, using wasabi extract to even out the tone. Already, my skin was beaming. But there was still one more step to go: Applying the non-oily sunscreen—because there’s no such thing as glowing skin when you’ve got a sunburn.
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not feed your skin something amazing in the morning? Meet the No B.S. Vitamin C+E Serum—It’s like a healthy, organic meal packed with vitamins for your skin. Vitamin C helps brighten your complexion, while vitamin E aims to protect skin from aging agents, like pollution.
What I love about this serum, though, is that the golden goo blended in smoothly and left a subtle shimmer on my skin. This glow-inducing product gets bonus points for having a chemical-free formula and ingredients I could actually recognize (well, most of ‘em).
Dream of a dewy complexion that looks like you’ve been sleeping in a field of posies all day? I’m not saying INIKA’s new Cream Illuminisor will give you exactly that, but it’ll come pretty close.
It has a different feel than other highlighters—more of a chapstick-like texture than a pressed powder—so you have to spend a little extra time blending it properly. But once you’ve applied it evenly, you’ll get an ethereal glow that’s tough to mimic with other products. Choose from rose, gold, or spice, depending on the tone of your skin and your desired look.
A healthy glow starts with cleansers, serums, and moisturizers that keep the skin clean and healthy. But a cosmetic highlighter, like Bar of Gold from celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, gives your overall look some oomph. A couple swipes of this delicate gold dust on my cheekbones, nose, cupid’s bow, and wherever else is looking a little dull has become a part of my morning routine—and just pulling out the glamorous flip case makes me feel like a diva. This product frequently sells out, so consider splurging on the newBar of Gold Palette if you can’t wait for a restock of the original, and get ready to shine.
We’re not saying you need products to look your best—but when you’ve got #glowingskin goals, there’s nothing wrong with a couple potions to give you an extra boost. Here’s to a healthy radiance, however you get there.
A skincare routine is ideally something you do every day, which means it’s basically as mundane as brushing your teeth. It’s easy to fall into a rut of using the same products day after day and month after month, to the point where those 10 minutes you take at the end or start of each day start to feel tiresome and forced instead of relaxing and indulgent.
Shake up your current skincare routine and elevate the experience with a few of these game-changing skincare products. Beyond the obvious benefits to your skin, these products will also inject a little bit of luxury into your everyday life.
These aren’t your average drugstore makeup wipes. Specifically designed for sensitive skin, these makeup wipes remove waterproof mascara and full-coverage foundation with just a few swipes and leave the rest of your skin in peace, instead of raw and red like other wipes.
These French-made wipes are oil free and made to soothe your skin as they power-wash away all the dirt and makeup. Pick up a pack of Bioderma Sensibio H2O Biodegradable Facial Cleansing and Makeup Remover Wipes and throw them in your gym bag or travel bag for a quick and easy clean face on the go. Get it on Amazon now for $9.90.

Then there are environmental issues. And let’s not forget about animal testing!
These are all valid concerns, so HealthyWay has done the legwork to help you make informed choices when it comes to finding the best and safest products.

Every eye area need is met with this complete serum. Get it from Amazon for $42.00.
4. Skip the can and get smoother legs.

7. Say “oui” to this classic French skincare product.
Ever wonder how French women keep their skin looking so perfect? There’s a good chance their secret is Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water. There are many micellar waters out there, but Bioderma is the original.
Micelles lift dirt and impurities and remove makeup with gentle ease. Just soak a cotton pad, wipe your face, and pat dry. There are so many uses for this product. For sensitive, irritated skin, it can be a substitute for a regular cleanser or makeup remover. It’s also helpful for all skin types when a regular face wash just isn’t taking everything off. Micellar water also works like a dream to clean dirty makeup brushes thoroughly without soap. Get it from Amazon for $12.93.
8. Take everything off your face with the least amount of effort.
Whether it’s a late night or just lack of time, we all have moments when we need to wash our faces but don’t want to. Fortunately, the solution to the problem is simple: Simple Kind to Skin Facial Wipes.
These are an easy, virtually effortless way to remove makeup, cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize in just one step. The two sides do double duty: One side exfoliates to remove dead skin cells, dirt, and oil, and the other cleanses and moisturizes with aloe vera. Formulated with triple purified water, these wipes do not contain dyes, perfume, or harsh chemicals. Get a set of four packs from Amazon for $16.14.
9. Bring the spa home with this scrub.
Who doesn’t love a deeply exfoliating body scrub? It feels just like a trip to a fancy spa. But the easier, less expensive option is using Tree Hut Coconut Lime Shea Sugar Scrub. Quite simply, this product smells like paradise.
The paraben-free formula is made with sugar as opposed to salt, which is what many scrubs, especially in this price range, are formulated with. So there’s no risk of that burning feeling or any potential irritation. Avocado and other natural oils provide a serious dose of moisture to the skin, making post-shower body lotion unnecessary. Get it from Amazon for $18.47.
10. This appealing product can change your skin.
Exfoliating and removing skin cells is vital to the health of your skin. Many of us get chemical peels or deep exfoliation treatments. But that can be irritating and costly. MyChelle Pumpkin Enzyme Peel is nature’s gentler version of a chemical peel.
Safe for all skin types, this peel uses the power of pumpkin to shed that layer of dull skin for a glowing complexion. Formulated with only safe ingredients—it is EWG Verified as well as vegetarian and gluten, paraben-, petroleum-, phthalate-, silicone-, and sulfate-free. The product is also free of any artificial fragrances and colors. Get it from Amazon for $21.33.
11. This oil is nature’s secret to better brows and lashes.
Thick brows and long lashes aren’t simply a trend. Both looks are here to stay. But that doesn’t mean using dangerous chemicals near your eyes or getting painful and pricey microblading is necessary.
Nature’s gift of castor oil may be all that is necessary to achieve the hair growth and thickness we all want. Cold pressed castor oil by Kate Blanc is 100 percent pure and USDA certified organic. The oil comes paired with three different applicators to make it easy to apply to your lashes and brows—and even to your cuticles for thicker, longer, nails. Get it from Amazon for $9.99.
12. This product is so Coola.
The number one way to prevent the signs of aging is to use sunscreen every single day. But most sunscreens can feel too greasy under a face of makeup, which is why so many of us end up skipping it.
So COOLA Dawn Patrol Classic SPF 30 Makeup Primer is a game changer. With a whipped, almost dry texture, it feels as close to naked skin as sunscreen can get. Apply it before foundation for a fresh face all day long. This product is also a great value because it’s truly a two-in-one. Get it from Amazon for $39.90.
13. This is the one product you must never forget to put on.
For those of us with a fair complexion or skin that is really sensitive to the sun, a daily sunscreen with a high SPF is a must. But that can be a nuisance when it doesn’t feel good on the skin. With Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen with Cellular Response Technology SPF 50, that’s simply not a problem.
Oil-free and non-comedogenic, this lightweight lotion absorbs quickly and won’t feel greasy. The small size of the leak-proof bottle makes it ideal for travel or to keep in your handbag on the go. Plus, it’s formulated with safe ingredients and oxybenzone-free. But most important, it provides broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Get it from Amazon for $19.00.
14. Give your face a refreshing drink.
We all have those hot, sweaty, or busy days when we just need to take a moment (even a brief one) for ourselves and cool down. That’s why Coco Ensoleille Face Aperitif Facial Mist in Orange Blossom feels like a dream.
The compact bottle fits perfectly in any bag—even a chic clutch. It hydrates and refreshes the face with natural florals and water. The light orange blossom scent isn’t overpowering; it’s just enough to feel fresh and clean again. Use it on bare skin post-workout or after applying makeup as a setting spray. Get it from Amazon for $40.00.
15. Note this BB cream.
Not all occasions call for a full-on face of foundation. That’s why NOTE Cosmetics BB Cream can make an excellent alternative to using regular makeup. This paraben-free SPF 15 formula is available in three different shades, and it’s packed with a variety of good-for-your-skin ingredients.
Wheat germ is said to help keep the face young and healthy looking; grape extract can aid in the fading of dark spots; vitamin E provides protection against free radicals; and sunflower oil can even out skin tone. With its great coverage, this BB cream is grade A. Get it from Amazon for $19.99.
16. Help your body stay youthful with this necessity.
Sure, we’re vigilant about protecting our faces from the sun. But whether we are going out for a run or will be in direct contact with the rays at the beach or pool, we should be applying and reapplying sunscreen all day long. A wrinkle-free face won’t distract from a sun-damaged body.
So don’t forget to apply sunscreen everywhere. Alba Botanica Hawaiian Green Tea Natural Sunblock SPF 45 offers both UVA and UVB protection without all the harsh chemicals found in many sunscreens. It’s water-resistant and paraben-, oxybenzone-, and phthalate-free. And you can feel extra good about slathering this safe sunscreen on because it’s not tested on animals. Get it from Amazon for $10.37.
17. This lotion is perfect for everyone in your home.
The skin is the body’s largest organ, and it absorbs everything we apply to it. So if we use a large amount of a particular product regularly, it’s important to choose one with safe ingredients. That’s why EveryOne Lotion with Lavender and Aloe is such a find. It is not just budget friendly, it’s also safely formulated.
It’s lightweight, absorbs quickly, has a fresh scent, and can be used on the face, body, and hands. The generously sized 32 oz bottle has a pump for easy application and can last for months, so leave it out on the bathroom counter for family and guests. Get it from Amazon for $13.63.
18. This cleansing oil won’t leave anything behind.
The best way to remove makeup is with cleansing oil. Kopari Coconut Cleansing Oil is a natural way to remove every single trace of makeup, from layers of foundation to stubborn waterproof mascara.
Compared to other oils, coconut oil has the highest concentration of fatty acids. It has naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, and some people find it can prevent inflammation and reduce redness. It’s truly a gift from nature. Many people use an oil cleanser as part of a double-cleansing routine, but that isn’t necessary with Kopari, because it rinses clean without leaving a greasy film. It’s also vegan, non-GMO, and silicone-, gluten-, and synthetic fragrance–free. Get it from Amazon for $32.00.
19. Purify your face in luxury.
With luxurious products in distinctive bright green packaging, Tata Harper has truly made a name in clean beauty. Great for all skin types, this purifying mask helps deeply cleanse the skin while fighting the effects of aging. It can help remove buildup from environmental stressors and pollution.

It is also free of GMOs, gluten, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, and oxybenzone, among other potentially harmful substances. Apply it for just 10 to 20 minutes for your best face yet. Get it from Amazon for $23.99.

Packaged in a glass jar (don’t worry, it’s pretty durable)—it smells so good (naturally) you’ll think you’re showering in a field of flowers. Most important, it has no unnecessary ingredients like parabens, sulfates, artificial colors, or unnatural preservatives. An artisanal product, it’s crafted in small batches from Moroccan roses and virgin coconut oil and is made in the U.S. Get it from Amazon for $44.00.
22. C why this serum should be in your beauty routine.
We all know that vitamin C is good for our health, but not everyone is aware that it’s also useful to prevent wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging. Reduction of discoloration and brightening are two more ways that vitamin C improves the look of the skin. And a serum is one of the best ways to deliver this ingredient.
Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum contains many of the same ingredients as other serums, which can cost three to four times as much. Highly concentrated with 7.5 percent ascorbic acid (vitamin C), it also has hyaluronic acid to increase moisture and collagen. Get it from Amazon for $45.00.
23. These pads will “bee” a staple in your makeup bag.
We all make mistakes, particularly when it comes to applying eye makeup. A slight slip of the hand or a sneeze can lead to disaster. But cleaning up those messes doesn’t have to be an ordeal. That’s why keeping a jar of Burt’s Bees Eye Makeup Remover Pads is always a good idea.
These pads are just the right size to correct mistakes without taking off all your other makeup. And they won’t leave an oily residue or irritate the delicate eye area, like so many other makeup removers can. The leak-proof tub also makes it a smart choice for travel. Get them from Amazon for $3.67.
24. You will be TOTALEE obsessed with this hair product.
TOTALEE is a new line from Beverly Hills hairstylist Lee Rittiner, who has created five products that are useful for all hair types and made without harsh chemicals like sodium laureth sulfate, parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, and artificial fragrances.
TOTALEE WORK is a cream elixir that totally works to protect the hair from humidity while locking in moisture and creating shine. WORK is a miracle styling tool for over-processed hair, and the thick texture makes it really easy to sculpt with. With a natural fragrance that is derived from pineapple, Thai coconut, passion fruit, and macadamia, it also smells heavenly. Get it from Amazon for $29.95.
25. Say goodbye to blemishes with this super serum.
While most of us think of serums as something we use to prevent aging, they can also be used to fight acne. Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum will kick zits to the curb with ingredients like organic fruit acids, willow bark (which contains natural salicylic acid), CoQ10, vitamin C, aloe, and green and white tea.
What the serum doesn’t contain is equally noteworthy. There are no parabens, pesticides, or phthalates. Juice Beauty’s approach to acne is quite different from other brands, because this serum both cleans and hydrates the skin. It also rebalances to reduce irritation and inflammation. Get it from Amazon for $30.00.
26. The secret to perfect beach waves.
Why do we always come back from the beach with mermaid-like hair? The secret to that texture is sea salt. But a trip to the shore or a dip in the ocean isn’t necessary to achieve this look.
Verb Sea Spray gets the job done no matter what time of year it is. Verb is also far more affordable than many other sea salt sprays. The key to using the product is to spray it on wet hair and let that hair dry naturally or to use it on slightly damp hair. Verb products are cruelty-free and do not contain sulfates, parabens, or gluten. Get it from Amazon for $18.00.
27. For better hair days, dry this.
Dry shampoo has become a staple of our beauty routines, but it can be problematic for so many reasons. Most dry shampoos contain harsh chemicals. Furthermore, the aerosol cans they’re often packaged in are not just bad for the environment; we risk inhaling a bit every time we use them.
However, Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk is a non-aerosol, so we don’t have to compromise our health or the environment’s. And it’s easy to use: Just spray five inches away from the hair at the roots, wait two minutes, and then brush through for clean, bouncy locks. Get it from Amazon for $20.00.
28. Smell cleaner without the chemicals.
Most of us use deodorant every day. But the sad reality is that some popular deodorants contain ingredients that are harsh and possibly toxic or carcinogenic. While many natural deodorants are ineffective or feel sticky, milk + honey Cream Deodorant stands out from the pack.
It’s made in the U.S., formulated with organic and plant-based ingredients, and free from aluminum. This product also smells good (or at the very least, better than our own natural scents) with three fragrances to choose from, including Coconut Vanilla, Coconut Lemongrass, and Bay Clove & Blood Orange. Furthermore, this deodorant is cruelty-free and non-toxic. Get it from Amazon for $15.20.
29. Scrub your way to brighter skin.
ACURE Brightening Facial Scrub is a cure for dull skin at a great price for any budget. Every skin type needs to exfoliate, and this gentle but effective scrub has organic sea kelp and lemon peel to lift and remove dirt, oil, and dead skin cells.
One of its most noteworthy ingredients is chlorella growth factor, which is said to help stimulate the skin to create new, nourished cells. It also contains madonna lily stem cells, which can brighten the skin’s appearance. All ACURE products are vegan and sulfate-, paraben-, and cruelty-free. Get it from Amazon for $9.99.
30. Make your lips more naturally kissable with this balm.
Of all the places on our body where using the safest products really counts, the lips are one of the most important. After all, there’s a good chance we are going to lick that balm off.
Furthermore, lips are extremely susceptible to dryness and irritation because they lack oil glands, which means flakiness is inevitable. So Caudalie Lip Conditioneris a real problem solver. It’s formulated from 99.5 percent natural ingredients, with grape-derived antioxidants to heal chapping, and grape oil and shea butter help deliver moisture on demand. All of this in a convenient stick. Get it from Amazon for $9.90.
31. Don’t rinse this out of your hair.
Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Leave-In Conditioner is made with ingredients that repair hair the natural way with monoi, tiare gardenia flower, and coprah coconut oils. While this formula is powerful, it can still be used every day because it doesn’t have ingredients like petroleum, mineral oil, or silicone.
A great thing about this product is that unlike many leave-in conditioners, it can be used on both wet and dry hair. So it’s a multitasker that you can use to freshen up your ’do or to tame those flyaways. As with every Carol’s Daughter product, the scent is a wonderful bonus. Get it from Amazon for $18.05.

While this treatment is beneficial at any time, it is especially useful after overexposure to the sun. But don’t underestimate the power of Dr. Bronner’s. Known for being both gentle and effective, it can be used to cleanse the body, face, and hair. Fragrances can contain lots of artificial ingredients, but that isn’t necessary. Pacifica Perfume Roll-On bottles are changing the perfume game by creating a cleaner product. 100% vegan and cruelty-free, they are formulated without parabens, phthalates and other harmful chemicals.
The roll-on container is ideal for travel or use on the go. The highly concentrated formula has natural ingredients that include manuka honey, hydroxyproline, lanolin, coneflower, and vitamin E. Another great benefit of this product is the packaging. The pump allows for easy and convenient dispensing, unlike a jar, which can harbor bacteria. Proper packaging is very important for naturally derived products because they often lack preservatives. Get it from Amazon for $18.95.
36. This oil does everything.
Tea tree oil is naturally antibacterial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal. And there are some indications that it can help treat ailments such as acne, nail and foot fungus, lice, dandruff, itching, earaches, psoriasis, and eczema.
Extracted from Australian Melaleuca alternifolia, Eve Hansen Tea Tree Oil is 100 percent pure and certified USDA organic. It comes with a built-in dropper so it can be dispensed easily and precisely. Get it from Amazon for $48.99.
I had never been nervous about going to the dermatologist until the morning of my first Botox appointment. I was 26 years old and about to pay a lot of money for someone to inject tiny doses of a toxin into my armpits to prevent me from sweating. I’d spent weeks doing research—how did Botox work? Did it hurt? How long would it last? What were the potential side effects? Most of all, would I regret this?
Botox, or Botulinum toxin, comes from a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. In large doses, the toxin is lethal, but small doses have been FDA approved for a variety of cosmetic and medical purposes.
Until I started thinking about underarm Botox, I didn’t know much about Botox—at all. There are so many myths and misconceptions surrounding Botox, so let’s set the record straight.
MYTH: Botox can get rid of all facial lines and wrinkles.
REALITY: Only certain facial lines and wrinkles can be treated with Botox.
Wrinkles and lines on your face are completely natural, and a variety of things can cause them—including normal muscle movements, sun damage, the aging process, smoking, and some medications. Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles it’s injected into, which stops those muscles from moving and causes wrinkles to relax. So, Botox only really works on lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement in the first place, like forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.
“Botox treats dynamic wrinkles, which develop from movement,” says Joseph Cruise, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon. “Botox improves the appearance of these wrinkles by relaxing the muscles. Static wrinkles are the result of sun exposure and aging. These wrinkles do not respond well to Botox treatment.”
There are some other cosmetic uses for Botox, too. “Botox can also be used to elevate downturned corners of the mouth, to reduce a cobblestone or dimpling on the chin, to sculpt the jawline, prevent the tip of the nose from moving downward when smiling, and to prevent vertical neck bands from showing,” says Cruise.
And if you do have static wrinkles that you’re self-conscious about, Cruise says you can get fillers to help lessen their appearance. And no, Botox and fillers are not the same thing—more on that later.
MYTH: Botox is only useful for cosmetic treatments and is just for women.
REALITY: Botox is a great cosmetic tool, but it has a number of medical uses for people of all genders.
Botox is an awesome cosmetic tool if you choose to go that route, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with making informed aesthetic changes to your own body. It also has some medical benefits that aren’t related to appearance.
Dacy Gaston, a registered nurse trained in injectables, says Botox can be used to help clients suffering from hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration), bladder spasms, and eye spasms. Botox is also approved by the FDA to treat migraines (link opens PDF).
And according to the Botox Cosmetic website, approximately 1 in 10 people who use Botox for cosmetic reasons are men. There’s nothing inherently feminine about wanting to feel confident about yourself, and something like Botox can address insecurities for people of all genders.
MYTH: Botox and fillers are the same thing.
REALITY: The two have very different purposes.
Botox and fillers are both things you inject into your face, but they serve different purposes.
“Botox relaxes wrinkles, and fillers replace volume; two different products for two different problems,” says Susan O’Malley, MD, owner and medical director of Madison Med Spa in Madison, Connecticut. “Botox works very nicely from the eyes up, and fillers work wonders from the eyes down.”
Katerina Gallus, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon, explains it like this: “Fillers do what they suggest: ‘fill’ or restore volume to an area of the face that is lacking volume, like a wrinkle or region such as the cheeks.”
This isn’t the same thing as Botox, which, as mentioned earlier, blocks nerve signals to certain muscles.
MYTH: Botox will “freeze” your face and stop you from emoting.
REALITY: It totally depends on how much Botox you have injected and where.
While using too much Botox can occasionally make it difficult for people to emote, it’s not a given that Botox injections will “freeze” your face or prevent you from making natural facial movements.
“Botox, performed properly, should not get rid of your important facial expressions,” explains Jacob Steiger, MD, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon.
Skillfully applied #botox doesn't freeze your face & leave you expressionless, but will erase the knitted brow & worry lines that age you.
— New York Dermatology (@NYDermGroup) May 20, 2013
If you are interested in Botox but worried about a frozen look, make sure you go to a qualified provider and discuss your concerns with them beforehand. They should be able to calculate the appropriate dosage amount for your desired result.
[pullquote align=”center”]“Botox dosage has to be individually tailored to each patient, and the dose has to be left to the expert injector they have chosen. Getting the proper dose based on your individual needs is key to having a beautiful and successful result.”
—Edward Alvarez, cosmetic dentist[/pullquote]
“If injected by a qualified provider who listens to your goals and discusses expectations, you can create a softening and natural result with Botox,” says Gallus. “This is dependent on the dose and the technique of the injector and is an important reason to seek out credentialed providers and not the ‘discount’ deal.”
Because Botox is so patient-dependent, it’s hard to predict how much you’ll need until you have spoken with your doctor about it.
“Patients cannot base how much Botox they need because it’s the amount of units their friend gets,” says Edward Alvarez, a cosmetic dentist. “A 5-foot, 105-pound woman may look ‘perfect’ after 20 units of Botox, but those same 20 units will barely do anything to the 6’4” former pro linebacker that wants to look younger. Botox dosage has to be individually tailored to each patient, and the dose has to be left to the expert injector they have chosen. Getting the proper dose based on your individual needs is key to having a beautiful and successful result.”
Basically, you can’t tell how much is too much by comparing yourself to other people.
MYTH: Botox can give you botulism, aka food poisoning.
REALITY: Botox is not botulism.
You may have heard of botulism—a rare but severe illness caused by a toxin that attacks the nerves in your body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, botulism is usually spread by food (specifically, “improperly home-canned, preserved, or fermented foods”), and the symptoms include double vision, droopy eyelids, slurred speech, trouble breathing, and muscle paralysis.
“Botox is made from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism,” Cruise says. “When certain foods are not stored properly, this bacteria can grow. When a person ingests the bacteria, it multiplies and spreads through the bloodstream. This process releases a protein named Botulinum toxin, which is the active ingredient in Botox. The toxin attaches to the nerves on large muscles such as those responsible for breathing or those in the arms and legs. This can make it difficult to breathe, walk, or perform other movements. For this to happen, the live bacteria must multiply and continue releasing large amounts of the toxin. When Botox is used for cosmetic purposes, more toxin is not produced. Also, such a low dose of Botox is used compared to the amount needed to cause these side effects, and the amount of Botox used in cosmetic treatments is not enough to enter the bloodstream and spread to other muscles.”
So while cosmetic Botox and botulism are derived from the same bacteria, the two are very different: Botox used for cosmetic and medical purposes is approved by medical professionals and generally extremely safe.
“The Botulinum toxin used for cosmetic and medical purposes is not the same concentration as that found in bubbled-up cans of food,” explains Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. “It remains local in the muscle into which it was injected and has never been reported to cause systemic paralysis and respiratory failure.”
To lessen your risk of getting botulism from food, the CDC recommends following safe home canning practices if you preserve food at home.
In conclusion, Botox is nothing to be scared of.
I was incredibly nervous going into my first appointment for underarm injections, but the whole thing was a breeze. My dermatologist put a numbing cream on each armpit and left it for a while to work, then came in 20 minutes later and gave me around 15 super quick injections on each side. It took less than two minutes, barely hurt at all, and there was no bruising or pain after the fact. And a few weeks after that first appointment, I danced the night away in my wedding dress without worrying about sweat patches appearing on my gown.
If you’re into the idea of Botox, whether for cosmetic or medical reasons, just make sure you have done adequate research. Plus, you should get the treatment from a licensed medical professional who can talk you through your options and choose the right dosage for you.
Some people may assign a value judgment to Botox, but the fact remains that it’s a safe, FDA-approved tool that can make a big difference for certain individuals. I know it did for me.
Let me tell y’all something. I am obsessed with aloe vera gel. Remember how the dad in My Big Fat Greek Weddingspritzed Windex on everything from dry skin to a scraped knee? Well, that’s how I feel about aloe vera gel. Got a sunburn? Aloe vera gel can fix it. That pesky pimple? Just dab some aloe vera gel on it. Ashy knees? Aloe vera gel, baby. Now, admittedly, my love for aloe vera gel has not historically been research- or evidence-based. I love the way it smells and the way it goes on sticky but dries smooth. (I mean, magic, right?!) So I wanted to find out if aloe vera gel is the skincare miracle I’ve been claiming—or is it way overrated? I spoke with skincare experts to get the scoop on why aloe vera gel might just be the missing piece in your skincare routine.
What is pure aloe vera gel?
“Aloe vera is the botanical or scientific name for the plant,” says Justin Hancock, certified professional horticulturist and garden expert at Costa Farms in Miami. “Botanists have given it a name change, so you’ll also see the old botanical name Aloe barbadensis used—confusing, I know!” A tropical succulent, there are literally hundreds of varieties of aloe. But aloe vera (or aloe barbadensis) is the kind you’re most likely find in spots from your neighborhood supermarket to the local nursery. Aloe vera doesn’t just refer to the plant itself, though. According to Hancock, “Aloe vera is also used commonly to refer to the thick gel found in the leaves. So you can essentially use the term however you want and not be wrong.”
[pullquote align=”center”]Bloomberg News recently reported that many popular brands of aloe vera gel, including those from CVS and Walgreens, containedlittle or no aloe vera at all![/pullquote] What’s more, says Hancock, you actually can grow and harvest your own all-natural aloe vera gel at home. Even if you don’t have an aloe plant, whole aloe leaves can usually be found in specialty grocery stores. No time to grow or harvest your own aloe vera? Celebrity facialist Ildi Pekar, who counts Miranda Kerr as a client, says if you’re buying aloe vera gel, “Use a 100 percent natural aloe vera and stay away from added alcohols.” When purchasing aloe vera gel, don’t get fooled bydeceptive labeling; always look at the ingredient list before purchasing. Bloomberg News recently reported that many popular brands of aloe vera gel, including those from CVS and Walgreens, containedlittle or no aloe vera at all! What’s more, these manufactured “aloe” gels often contain alcohol for a cooling effect. Instead of hydrating your skin, the alcohol in these faux aloe vera gels actually ends up drying skin out. A pure aloe vera gel will contain ingredients you can pronounce: aloe vera (obviously) and citric acid (an organic compound used as a preservative). Some may also contain essential oil for scent.
Aloe Vera Gel for Skincare
Aloe vera gel is a great addition to any skincare routine because it isn’t comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores. And, according to Adrienne Haughton, MD, director of clinical and cosmetic dermatology at Stony Brook Medicine at Commack, aloe vera may help fight signs of aging. “One scientific review of aloe vera states that the mucopolysaccharides help in binding moisture into the skin,” says Haughton. “It goes on to state that aloe stimulates fibroblasts, which produced collagen and elastin fibers—making the skin more elastic and potentially less wrinkled.” “Another study showed that taking aloe vera gel orally has anti-aging effects,” Haughton continues. “Those who took aloe vera gel showed improved skin elasticity and decreased skin wrinkles, which was shown to be the result of increased pro-collagen throughout the dermis (the layer of the skin that contains collagen).” As if reducing fine lines and wrinkles weren’t wonderful enough, aloe vera gel may even help clear up acne breakouts faster. In one study, participants whose acne was being treated with the topical retinoid tretinoin were also given aloe vera gel, which was applied topically. Tretinoin and aloe vera gel used in combination were shown to be more effective at treating acne than acne medication alone. So how can you use aloe vera gel as part of your daily skincare routine? Well, you can use aloe vera gel daily as a moisturizer. I have incredibly dry skin, and I’ve found that pure aloe vera gel is one of the only products, aside from literally bathing in olive oil (which I do not recommend), that keeps my face hydrated all day long. Or you can use aloe vera gel to make a moisturizing aloe vera lotion with basic ingredients, almost all of which can be found in your kitchen cupboard.
Aloe Vera Gel for Home Hair Remedies
Wait, you mean you can use aloe vera gel on your head too?! you ask? Yes! I told you aloe vera gel is amazing. According to Dominic Burg, PhD, chief scientist for évolis hair products, “Aloe contains enzymes that provide an exfoliating effect and remove dead cells. It is also rich in vitamins C and E, which provide it its antioxidant/anti-aging effect.” These properties, says Burg, make aloe hugely beneficial to hair and scalp health. Because aloe vera helps exfoliate the scalp, it’s a great treatment for dry, flaky skin and dandruff. In addition to its anti-aging properties, aloe’s vitamin E helps lock moisture into the scalp, preventing further dryness and irritation. And, while aloe vera gel won’t make your hair grow faster, its moisturizing qualities help prevent breakage and split ends.
[pullquote align=”center”]Aloe vera gel can even be used to promote postpartum healing after a vaginal birth. The easiest way to apply aloe vera gel postpartum is by making padsicles to stash in your freezer.[/pullquote] “Pure aloe vera gel is not very convenient to use,” explains Burg, “so it is best to look for combination products. Avoid silicones and too many heavy oils that may block pores and cause greasy hair at the roots.” If you’d rather not decipher the ingredients on haircare products that claim to contain pure aloe vera gel, Burg says it’s easy to make your own aloe vera conditioning treatment at home. “You can dilute fresh aloe vera gel with water [using a] 1:2 [ratio] and use it as a conditioner while in the shower after shampooing,” explains Burg. “You can also mix essential oils such as rosemary in it for added anti-aging benefits. For a moisturizing mask-style treatment, you can mix aloe vera gel with coconut oil and apply to the hair and scalp, then leave for at least 30 minutes.”
Other Uses for Aloe Vera Gel
Healing Wounds
Aloe vera gel isn’t just great for your skin and hair. According to a 2016 study, when applied topically, aloe vera gel accelerated wound healing in rats, resulting in reduced inflammation and decreased scar tissue size. According to a 2015 review of aloe vera used in wound care, aloe vera may help heal wounds faster due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties. You can apply 100 percent aloe vera gel topically straight to a wound to promote healing, or you can apply it to your bandage before covering a wound. Aloe vera gel can even be used to promote postpartum healing after a vaginal birth. The easiest way to apply aloe vera gel postpartum is by making padsicles to stash in your freezer. Simply take a pad of your choice (I suggest the jumbo ones they send home from the hospital with you), coat it in aloe vera gel, wrap it back in its packaging, and stick it in the freezer. Once it’s frozen, stick that sucker in your giant postpartum undies: The aloe promotes faster healing, and the ice-cold pad will help reduce swelling.
Makeup Remover
You don’t have to spend big bucks to find an aloe vera-based makeup remover. In fact, you can make your own aloe vera gel makeup remover at home with this recipe from Wild for Nature. Best of all? It’s also vegan. If you’re not the DIY type, Pekar says that many products in her eponymous skincare line contain aloe vera, including a facial cleanser that can be used to remove makeup.
It’s pretty rare to be allergic to topical aloe treatments, but Haughton says that “allergic contact dermatitis has been seen with aloe vera gel.” If you’re allergic to aloe vera gel, you’ll likely just get a mild rash or feel itchy where the aloe was applied. If that’s the case, wash the area with soap and water to remove the aloe vera gel completely. However, if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, be sure to call your doctor right away.
Aloe Vera Gel and California’s Prop 65
You may have heard recently that California added aloe to the list of known carcinogenic ingredients included in the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (more efficiently known as Prop 65). But, you may be wondering, didn’t you just tell me all the amazing ways aloe vera can help my skin and hair? Yes I did, and it still can. That’s because the aloe included on the Prop 65 list was actually a very specific type: non-decolorized, whole-leaf aloe extract. A study found that this specific type of aloe extract, which is manufactured using a charcoal filtration process, can release organic compounds called anthraquinones, which are known for their laxative properties. Anthraquinones aren’t all carcinogenic, but one type called aloin, which is found in the outer leaf pulp of the aloe plant, was shown to cause cancerous tumors in rats. The good news is that aloin caused tumors to grow in rats when ingested. Little or no cancer-causing activity was reported when aloe (even if the product contained aloin) was applied topically. Aloe vera gel may not be the cure to absolutely everything, despite what I’d been preaching to anyone who’d listen. But it turns out that when it comes to your skin and scalp, aloe vera gel is pretty darn close to being the magical skincare remedy I’ve always known it is. And it’s way safer than Windex.
“No doubt, we are living in one of the best times in history, with so much information and knowledge available at our disposal,” says Danielle Schleese, vegan makeup artist and Youtube vlogger. “The spread of information about cruelty-free products can be used as a powerful tool to raise awareness on issues that affect our global evolution.” Schleese goes on to note that it remains up to the consumer to decide what information to expose themselves to and what choices to make when it comes to going eco-friendly and cruelty-free—especially when it comes to cosmetics and makeup brushes. Many of us associate this kind of conscious consumerism with veganism and especially what people eat. And yes, there’s a good reason more and more Americans are moving toward a vegan lifestyle according to a report prepared by the research company GlobalData. Veganism is definitely trendy, but people are also realizing that ethical purchases and sustainable lifestyles choices can have a major influence on our furry friends and on the environment regardless of what we’re putting on our plates. Though GlobalData’s report focused primarily on the culinary world, this mentality has made its way onto the beauty scene, with more and more brands creating vegan, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free products. Specifically, we’ve seen an increase in the use of synthetic makeup brushes in place of the animal-hair brushes that have long been deemed “the best of the best.” Case in point: Big-name brand MAC announced earlier this year that their makeup brushes have are now 100 percent synthetic. This is exciting news for consumers and makeup artists who’ve been on the hunt for eco-friendly makeup brushes for years.
Does synthetic mean sacrificing quality?
The use of synthetic materials is key when it comes to choosing eco-friendly makeup brushes, but a brand’s cruelty-free and eco-friendly qualities are not the only factors to consider. You want to make sure the brush you’re buying is high quality too! Anything you’re spending your hard-earned money on shouldn’t shed (a hairy face is probably not the look you’re going for), should be held in place by a solid metal base (known as the “ferrule”) that won’t easily fly off the handle (aka become detached), and, most importantly, should do the job of effectively applying your makeup.
[related article_ids=19648] To help educate you on the true meaning behind eco-friendly and cruelty-free, and what you need to know before purchasing a makeup brush that claims to be both, we turned to experts who explain how it all works.
What puts the “friendly” in eco-friendly makeup brushes?
When most of us think about the term “eco-friendly,” we think about a product that’s not harmful to the earth or the environment. But when it comes to the makeup industry, it can actually go far beyond that. Cruelty-free is the name of the game, but some cult fave cosmetics companies still aren’t on board with banning animal testing. Millions of animals are used in research and toxicity testing for some of the most commonly used beauty products we hold so dear to our get-ready regimen. What’s worse is that research published in a 2014 report from the New England Anti-Vivisection Society, “Review of Evidence of Environmental Impacts of Animal Research and Testing,” suggests that the use and disposal of these animals contributes to pollution in addition to adversely impacting biodiversity and public health. Additional reports from the National Institutes of Health’s Division of Intramural Research Laboratories found that labs that use animals for research produced over 1.5 million pounds of animal bedding, feces, and excess food waste. These large amounts of animal waste are as detrimental to our environment as the waste we create as humans. Additionally, the millions of discarded animal carcasses—many of which have been contaminated with a myriad of different chemicals, viruses, and diseases—can lead to an array of biological hazards. The same is true for laboratories that incinerate the animals after use—the toxic emissions are still released into the environment. But a beauty product—like a makeup brush—can be cruelty-free without being animal-free. That means that while a company may not test on animals, they could still use hair or fur from an animal for the brush’s bristles: “Many of the soft and plush makeup brushes on the market are made with animal hair (squirrel, boar, fox, horse, etc,),” explains Annie Tevelin, beauty expert and founder of natural, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free skincare line SkinOwl. Though animal testing and cruelty are huge issues in the cosmetics industry, parts and packaging are also a big part of the problem. When brush handles and parts are not recyclable, they wind up landfills, which pile up year after year. Thankfully, more and more companies are turning toward using recyclable materials. Some, like EcoTools, are even using 100 percent tree-free paper for their packaging by swapping paper out for 20 percent cotton and 80 percent bamboo fibers. Ready to hop on the eco-friendly and cruelty-free bandwagon? Here are some of the best “friendly” makeup brushes the market has to offer.
This PETA-certified brush company pretty much takes the cake when it comes to being environmentally aware in all aspects of production and creation. They use recycled materials such as aluminum and plastic, their packaging is made of 100 percent tree-free paper, with 20 percent cotton and 80 percent bamboo fibers, and their handles are made from renewable bamboo. “They are great for the average daily use and maintain their form and shape if treated properly,” says Schleese. In her experience, she’s never had any problems with EcoTools brushes shedding, although she has experienced the head separating from the handle. “If this happens, it’s so easy to glue back on,” she adds. “These brushes are great quality for a great price, lasting for two-plus years. They are also good for travel because the handles are a bit shorter than standard brushes.”
[products ids=’1005905,1005907,1005909′ type=full]
This is another vegan, eco-friendly brand that Schleese loves—especially for the price point. Full sets range in size and price from $30.99 to $129.99 on Amazon.
[related article_ids=1003339] “They feature eco-friendly green bamboo handles and vegan bristles with an anodized aluminum ferrule,” she says. “They are often compared to professional grade since they don’t shed, hardly ever fall apart, and offer a wide range of brush types—ideal for someone looking for more styles.”
[products ids=’1005912,1005916,1005918′ type=full]
This Australian-owned company has gained clout in the beauty industry over the last decade for their organic, natural makeup and their vegan and cruelty-free products. Not only are their products made from natural ingredients and not tested on animals, but they’re certified organic by the Organic Food Chain, Australia’s National Organic Standard, which is a major deal since this is one of the highest standards set for organic cosmetic companies in the world. They’re kind to the environment too; their brushes’ handles are made from sustainably sourced wood.
[products ids=’1005925,1005924,1005920′ type=full]
This vegan, cruelty-free makeup, skincare, and brush line is fully committed to producing the purest products in all aspects. The colors in their makeup are sourced from a vibrant combination of fruit, vegetable, tea, and other plant pigments instead of harmful dyes that contain lead, mercury, and other dangerous heavy metals, and they also utilize a Natural Definition Process (NDP) adopted from the USDA process for identifying natural versus synthetic ingredients. 100% Pure is also committed to being eco-friendly in all areas, from developing their products using biodegradable formulas to using recyclable packaging and biodegradable packing materials. They even print using non-toxic and soy inks and work out of a headquarters that is 100 percent solar-powered. Pretty impressive all around!
[products ids=’1005927,1005932,1005930′ type=full]
This luxe vegan makeup brush line hovers at a higher price point but is worth checking out for multiple reasons. Of course they’re both vegan and cruelty-free and PETA certified. The brushes are made out of Taklon, a high-grade synthetic polyester fiber that’s just as soft as, if not softer than, real animal hair. “The ferrule (the part that holds the bristles) does not shed, nor come off since my two-and-a-half years of owning them,” says Schleese. “The only thing is their handle is not made from recycled materials, or from natural bamboo-like materials, which is worth noting.” All brushes in their line are hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial, so they’re ideal for people who are sensitive to allergens and irritants.
[products ids=’1005943,1005938,1005942′ type=full]
This environmentally conscious collection of cosmetics includes everything from eyeshadows and foundations to moisturizers and cleansers as well as a pretty sensational line of brushes. The brand has been around since 2005, making it one of the first eco-friendly brush lines. None of NVEY ECO’s products are tested on animals and are all developed without the use of chemical ingredients such as parabens, petrochemicals, or synthetic fragrances. NVEY ECO’s products also qualify as industrially compostable (aka capable of naturally disintegrating without leaving a mark of toxicity). What’s also enviable about NVEY ECO’s brushes is that they don’t shed. True to their moderate-to-high price range, they are long-lasting, soft, and blend easily.

We live in a world of buzzwords when it comes to beauty, health, and wellness, and there are a few that tend to stand out. Organic and natural, for example, have been mainstays in our wellness dialogue for quite some time, but a new word is taking the world by storm: clean. Clean eating is one of the simplest and healthiest approaches to eating. It focuses on whole foods, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains. There is also an element of social responsibility and environmental impact when it comes to eating clean. But clean is no longer a buzzword that’s limited to just your diet. Beauty products can also carry the clean seal of approval. For a beauty product to be considered clean, it often requires third-party testing to ensure the safety of the ingredient list; the products are also sustainable and unlikely to have a negative impact on the environment. And, so the logic goes, if they aren’t harming the environment, they likely are okay for your body as well. Shopping for clean beauty products is becoming increasingly easier, as many beauty brands are coming out with dedicated clean lines. In one of the biggest moves yet for the clean [linkbuilder id=”6742″ text=”beauty industry”], Sephora recently released its Clean Beauty Seal, which offers a whole range of products, including skincare, haircare, makeup, and fragrance, that they’ve deemed toxin-free. Sephora has investigated each brand under its Clean seal to ensure that they contain no synthetic ingredients and are free of “toxic” ingredients. Clean at Sephora products are formulated without ingredients such as sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, triclocarban, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing agents, and all synthetic fragrances—so fresh and so clean. Beyond the Clean seal of approval, you can find clean products within your favorite beauty brands if you know what to look for.
What does clean beauty mean?
To be very clear, “clean” is not a term certified by any governing body, and there is still some debate about what exactly it entails. The movement toward clean beauty began when people realized that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not required to approve beauty and skincare products. This doesn’t necessarily mean the ones on the shelves are causing harm, but it did begin to raise awareness in the beauty community as to what we are putting on our skin and in our bodies. There’s no true definition of “clean beauty.” And clean can encompass products that are both natural and artificial. The difference is that clean beauty is considered safe—safe for your body, safe for the environment, and usually free of ingredients like phthalates, parabens, mineral oils, and other controversial ingredients. [pullquote align=”center”]“There are many organic products that you would not want to put on your skin. Think about poison ivy. It’s organic, but you wouldn’t want it on you.”
—Arielle Nagler, MD[/pullquote] “When it comes to clean beauty there are a few things that people think about,” Arielle Nagler, MD, dermatologist at NYU Langone Health explains. “Is it environmentally safe? Is it free of toxins for use in people? What was the research that went into developing them? Was there no impact on the environment or on animals?” Asking these questions helps to determine whether the products in your daily beauty regimen are, in fact, clean. Additionally, Nagler says that people want to use products that have responsible ingredients because of environmental and health concerns. “For example,” she says, “Synthetic sunscreens are bad for the environment. Other ingredients are said to disrupt hormone production, or perhaps even be carcinogenic. Clean beauty [on the other hand] is environmentally friendly, and above all, uses non-toxic ingredients.”
Clean Beauty, Organic Beauty, and Natural Beauty: Understanding Labels
While it is always nice to go organic or go natural, these labels don’t necessarily qualify as clean. So when you see words on the packaging like “all natural,” or “organic,” you might be thinking that you’re getting one thing, when in reality, if you knew the true chemical breakdown or production process, you would feel differently. Additionally, many clean beauty products have certain stamps on the back, like USDA organic, non-GMO, and EWG. While having these labels doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safer, it does mean they have met certain sets of guidelines. “Not everything that is natural or organic is necessarily safe,” says Nagler. “There are many organic products that you would not want to put on your skin. Think about poison ivy. It’s organic, but you wouldn’t want it on you,” she says.
Ingredients to Avoid for Clean Beauty
From makeup to skincare to hair and nails—or whatever else is part of your daily routine—when you’re picking out your beauty products, there are key ingredients to look out for that might mean a product is not clean.
Phthalates
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to soften and increase the flexibility of plastic. And, believe it or not, they are in a lot of the cosmetics we use on a daily basis. “Phthalates, as key components in plastics, appear in many consumer products,” according to the study Chemical Exposures: The Ugly Side of Beauty Products. “The main phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are dibutyl phthalate in nail polish, diethyl phthalate in perfumes and lotions, and dimethyl phthalate in hairspray.” They are also found in products with synthetic fragrance. “The concern with phthalates is that they are thought to disrupt the endocrine system,” says Nagler. (The endocrine system is responsible for sending hormone signals throughout the body.) “When you’re thinking of things with fragrances, like perfumes, nail polish products, or shaving cream, you’re thinking of things with phthalates,” she explains. To spot phthalates, look for the following on the label: phthalate, DEP, DBP, DEHP and synthetic fragrance, or just fragrance in general. If the products are free of these things, you’re typically good to go.
Mineral Oil
Mineral oil is a heavily debated ingredient in the beauty and dermatology community. Mineral oils include ingredients like petroleum or other moisturizers. According to the National Toxicology Program, untreated mineral oil is a known human carcinogen. That said, the ones you find in beauty products are highly refined. “These products are also thought to be bad for the environment, and overall tend to be very heavy products,” says Nagler. Plant-based alternatives are thought to be better for the environment and for the body overall; look for coconut oil, jojoba oil, and argan oils, all of which work to seal in moisture.
Retinyl Palmitate
This ingredient is one that we see a lot of in our day-to-day beauty regimens. It is a derivative of vitamin A and is used in many common skincare products, like face and body creams, for its anti-aging properties. The problem with retinyl palmitate is that it is thought to cause birth defects and can also increase skin sensitivity. The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database also suggests that, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, retinyl palmitate may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions.
[pullquote align=”center”]The problem with retinyl palmitate is that it is thought to cause birth defects and can also increase skin sensitivity.[/pullquote]
Oxybenzone
Now that we’re officially in summer mode, it’s time to start slathering on the sunscreen. But most sunscreens today contain oxybenzone, a common ingredient in chemical sunscreens. Many people are allergic to this ingredient, says Nagler. Additionally, when sunscreen comes off our bodies in the ocean, the oxybenzone has been shown to be destructive to coral reefs. And lastly, there have been a number of experimental studies that indicate that several sunscreens might have endocrine disruptive effects. “There are alternatives to oxybenzone in sunscreens, however,” says Nagler. “Look for ones that are zinc- and titanium-based.”
Coal Tar
Coal tar is an ointment used to treat a variety of skin diseases, like psoriasis and eczema, and it is often found in many dandruff shampoos. While the FDA has deemed it safe and effective for the treatment of dandruff and psoriasis, there are concerns surrounding it as a carcinogen, Nagler says. Studies—many of which have been conducted on animals—show that chronic exposure to coal tar can increase the chances of skin cancer. Instead of using dandruff shampoos with coal tar, Nagler suggests, “Try [selecting] shampoos or lotions that are anti-fungal based.”
Triclosan and Triclocarban
If you are using any type of antibacterial beauty product like soaps, body washes, and cosmetics, triclosan and/or triclocarban are often key ingredients. These antibacterial agents are designed to reduce or prevent bacterial contamination. “The problem recently,” says Nagler, “is that people are concerned that triclosan/triclocarban can affect the thyroid as well as reproductive hormones.” Similarly, studies show that triclosan exposure can increase the chance of cancer, and is a known contaminant to the environment. Instead, opt for choosing soaps or body washes that have nature-inspired antibacterial ingredients like tea tree oil.
Wearing makeup is a completely personal choice. If you choose to do so, the number of products and styles available can be intimidating.
The good news is that there’s tons of great information and resources out there like YouTube videos, step-by-step articles, makeup forums, and Instagram tutorials.
The not-so-great news? There are tons of myths and misconceptions out there. What really happens if you sleep in a full face of makeup every night? Is it true that you can ignore expiration dates on your products, especially if you don’t use them that often? And how often do you really need to clean your makeup brushes? Here are seven common myths and misconceptions debunked.
Myth 1: If you’re going to wear makeup, you have to put on a full face of it.
“I’d say the number one misconception people have about makeup is that you need a full face of it,” explains makeup artist Suzy Gerstein. “Let’s say we’re talking about foundation. The most important thing to get right when choosing a foundation is the color match.”
“Once you match your skin tone exactly, you can apply the product sparingly and only where more coverage is needed. In fact, by letting the areas that don’t need coverage remain bare, you get a more modern, realistic look to your makeup application.”
Basically, you should wear whatever amount of makeup you are comfortable with. If you only want a couple of dots of concealer on some red spots, great. Excited to get a whole face of makeup on, complete with false lashes? Excellent. But don’t feel like you have to cover your whole face every single time, because you don’t.
Myth 2: Makeup is a “girly thing.”
In reality, people of all genders wear makeup, and there is nothing inherently feminine about it. Men in Hollywood often wear makeup on the red carpet, which Benedict Cumberbatch called “a wonderful thing.” And obviously, actors and actresses wear makeup while filming television shows and movies.

Brands are also becoming more inclusive to all people who might be interested in makeup. Makeup artist and beauty blogger Manny Gutierrez became the first male Maybelline ambassador in 2017, after Covergirl named makeup artist and model James Charles an ambassador in 2016. More recently, makeup artist Jessica Blackler made headlines after she launched a vegan, cruelty-free, unisex makeup brand called JECCA, with products designed to address the concerns of transgender individuals—for example, covering up facial hair stubble.
“JECCA overlooks gender and celebrates individuality,” Blackler toldThe Cut. “We’re not a brand that concentrates on just women.”
Myth 3: It’s NBD to fall asleep with your makeup on.
If, on rare occasion, you end up sleeping in makeup after a long night, chances are that nothing bad will happen. Just don’t make it a regular occurrence—at the very least, it could irritate your skin and stain your bedding.
It could also be worse. A case study published recently by the American Academy of Ophthalmology showed one potentially disastrous outcome. When Theresa Lynch, a 50-year-old housekeeper, complained of irritated, swollen eyes, her doctors discovered that small, calcified deposits of mascara were embedded in her eyelids. The cause? She had worn heavy eye makeup almost every day for 25 years but didn’t remove it properly each night.
“I had fallen into a bad habit of wearing a lot of makeup and not washing it off,” Lynch said in an interview with The Daily Mail. “I should never have let it get this far.”
Lynch was extremely uncomfortable, and the deposits were scratching her eyes, potentially causing a risk to her vision. Her doctors were concerned about potential infections, so Lynch had surgery to remove the deposits and now has permanent scarring inside her eyelids.
https://twitter.com/EmilyHolland24/status/1014739235461423105
This is certainly an extreme case, but it shows that nasty things can happen if you consistently neglect to remove your makeup before bed. Keep makeup remover and cotton balls—or whatever your preferred makeup removal method is—in an easy-to-access place, like near your toothbrush or on your bedside table. Make taking off your products part of your bedtime routine.
Myth 4: There’s only one “right way” to apply makeup.
“Even the same person needs a different approach to her makeup depending on the season, situation, or day,” Gerstein says. “I like to tell clients to step back and look at the whole picture. …And then ask yourself: What do I need today that will make the most impact? Perhaps it’s a quick shot of blush, maybe it’s the curl of your lash, or maybe you want to skip lashes all together and give yourself a little extra help in the brow department. It could also be a statement lip, or perhaps it’s simply a good facial massage with a gorgeous vitamin C serum or facial oil.”
According to Gerstein, the best part about putting on makeup is playing and experimenting with new things.
“It’s key to throw out the ‘shoulds’ and the paint-by-numbers charts, and instead look at what is in this moment,” she recommends.
Myth 5: Natural makeup brushes are better.
In reality, so-called “natural” makeup brushes are made with animal hair. Some animal hairs could potentially cause an allergic reaction, and they may be made using cruel practices (though you can buy cruelty-free natural brushes from certain brands). Plus, animal hairs are more porous than synthetic fibers, meaning they absorb more of your product and could host harmful bacteria.
[related article_ids=1005850]
“A brush made of animal hairs is really bad,” says Jacqueline Schaffer, MD. “We want to use a makeup brush that is cruelty-free and synthetic. These are more gently packed with fine bristles, providing an even tone.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BkTJOOpHFSv/?hl=en&taken-by=motd_cosmetics
Schaffer explains that the hairs in a natural brush can also be uneven, causing an uneven application of makeup.
Myth 6: You don’t need to clean your personal makeup brushes that often if you only use them on yourself.
Cleaning your makeup brushes can be a drag—you don’t want to damage the delicate bristles, and they can take a while to dry, which can be annoying if you want to use the brush later on that same day. According to Schaffer, we should all be cleaning our makeup brushes after every single use. But realistically, she says deep cleaning them once or twice a week is okay, too. Regular brush cleanings will make your brushes last longer. Plus, sticking to clean brushes is good for your skin in the long run.

“You will end up saving money on your skincare products because you won’t have all that bacteria building up on your skin,” she says. “You won’t need to cover up that much because you won’t be the cause of your skin reacting.”
Invest in some brush cleaning wipes, baby shampoo, or special brush shampoo and commit to a regular cleaning schedule. It’s particularly important to clean beauty blenders or similar items after every use because they absorb a lot of product.
In a similar vein, if you ever get your makeup done professionally, make sure the brushes are clean first. Professional makeup artists know exactly how important this is, so anyone who tries to use dirty brushes may be inexperienced.
Myth 7: You can ignore makeup expiration dates.
Yes, I hate to break it to you, but makeup expires—and it’s very important to pay attention to that. Firstly, the consistency of the products will change over time which can make them less effective. But more importantly, old makeup can harbor bacteria which could irritate your skin and eyes.
“Look at when you bought your mascara,” Schaffer advises. “Past the four-month marker, it can build up bacteria and cause serious damage. The mascara is more likely to be clumpy, so it will weigh down your lashes, and they will fall off faster. It can also make you look older.”
Generally speaking, Schaffer says, “If you use makeup that is too old, you’re going to ruin your skin.” So go through your makeup collection and toss anything that’s expired, pronto.
Ultimately, makeup means different things to different people.
For some, it’s an art form. Others use it to feel more confident or incorporate it into their daily routines. Some wear it as part of their professional uniform, and others love nothing more than playing with fun looks for a night out. And of course, some people opt not to wear makeup at all.
Many so-called makeup “rules” are stylistic, and you should feel free to ignore them—who cares if a green eyeshadow doesn’t “fit” with your skin tone?—but other guidelines are expert-backed, and they are definitely worth following.
So always be sure to clean your brushes, follow expiration dates, and wipe off your makeup before you go to bed. Everything else is up to you.
Out of Office is a regular feature of brands we love—and we think you will too! Each of the brands we highlight must meet three criteria: 1) have a woman (or three!) in charge; 2) create sustainably, responsibly, and thoughtfully; and 3) fit in with the lives we’re actually living. Read on to find out more about this week’s brand, the ladies behind it all, and the advice they have for women everywhere.
‧ ‧ ‧ ‧ ‧
Women of color supporting women of color by creating a product that’s great for everyone? That’s something we’re 100 percent on board with, hence our pick for this week’s feature: Karité. Karité (which means shea in French) is a shea butter–packed skincare brand based in New York City, founded by three sisters from Ghana. Though their offerings may be limited to just two products (for now!), their body butter and hand cream have been expertly designed. If you’re feeling skeptical, thinking that there are plenty of body lotions on the market, rest assured that Karité’s founders know what they’re talking about. After all, they’re pretty closely tied to their creams’ formulas: Both the body butter and hand cream were designed by co-founder and CEO Naana Boakye, MD. Yep, one of the co-founders is a dermatologist, and she’s the one who develops their products (she also runs her own dermatology practice just outside NYC). Lest you think that’s the only trick these sisters have up their sleeves for Karité, there’s more—a lot more: Abena Slowe, Karité’s chief operating officer, is a lawyer in New York, while chief creative officer Akua Okunseinde has years of experience in sales, marketing, and finance (most recently for Google). Oh, and they’re all moms. Talk about badass.
Naana, Abena, and Akua are from Ghana, and growing up, they had access to some truly incredible products. Their favorite moisturizers were chock full of shea butter—an ingredient indigenous to Africa (and primarily farmed by women). But when they moved to the U.S., they were hard-pressed to find creams that lived up to their standards; the products they found were often full of highly processed, refined shea butters. They knew they could do better, thanks especially to Naana’s dermatology expertise. Karité’s body butter and hand cream are hypoallergenic and free of artificial dyes, parabens, silicones, and pointless fillers that sit on top of the skin. Instead, they’re packed with raw, unrefined shea butter, sustainably sourced palm oil, and unrefined organic coconut oil. They worked with Ghanaian vendors to find the highest quality ingredients to bring to America. And in the process, Karité is helping support the more than 600,000 Ghanaian women who depend on shea butter production for their income. While this shea butter production is good for devotees of Karité’s products and for the bank accounts of Ghanaian women, it isn’t always so great for the environment. That’s why Karité is a member of the Global Shea Alliance, a non-profit association based in Ghana that works to promote sustainability around shea butter production, developing environmentally friendly best practices, and setting industry quality standards across the world. I use Karité’s products, and my dry skin is a huge fan. (See why below!) But in 2018, our purchasing power can be political, and it feels good to support a company owned by women of color in a time when, astoundingly, that in itself can be controversial. That Karité’s ingredients are thoughtfully chosen, sustainably sourced, and add to the livelihoods of Ghanaian women and their families is just another reason to support Naana, Abena, and Akua and companies like theirs. Keep it up, ladies; HealthyWay is cheering you on.
Karité Product Spotlight
In need of hydration from head to toe? Well, Karité’s Crème Corps Hydrating Body Cream’s combination of shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, and herbs—all sustainably sourced, of course—is gentle enough for everyday use while also being effective on particularly rough bits. (Head, elbows, knees, and toes, anyone?) On the other hand, if you just need a product to throw in your purse and put on every single hour (I’m guilty!), the Crème Mains hand cream is your girl. It’s formulated particularly for the hands, which can dry out easily from hand-washing, cleaning, and general life. This cream is also formulated with ingredients that are ideal for sensitive skin.

Q+A with Naana Boakye, Abena Slowe, and Akua Okunseinde
What is your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start your company?
Naana: Our family roots are in Ghana, West Africa, where much of the shea butter you know and love is sourced from. Our family has used shea butter in its raw form as a daily moisturizer for as long as we can remember. While raw, unrefined shea butter is the ultimate moisturizer for your skin, it’s quite difficult to spread on the skin. We would often mix the shea butter with over-the-counter lotion to make it easier to spread. This is when we had the idea to make our own all-natural version of liquid shea butter. Based on what I’ve learned in my practice, I was confident about the type of formulation we would need but knew it would take time to perfect. We started brainstorming about starting this brand back in 2013 and officially launched in February 2017.
Walk us through your typical work day.
Abena: We really don’t have a “typical” work day—every day is different since we are a start-up. There are a lot of moving parts, and it can be crazy and chaotic at times. When we are working on the brand, our time is spent on customer orders, managing and expanding our retail and wellness partnerships, social media, communicating with bloggers and magazines on features, and strategizing about the vision and future of the brand.
What’s up next for Karité?
Akua: Our key focus has and always will be our products, specifically ingredients that we source to provide maximum hydration for our customers’ skin. We have some ideas of what products we want to add to our line, but we are constantly researching to make sure that we make the right determination. We are not trying to have a ton of products all at once—we find that being deliberate and intentional with a slow rollout is working well. We are also expanding our retail brand partnerships within the U.S. We love the fact that so many indie beauty stores are cropping up and really loving what we have to offer. We look forward to collaborating with those that share a similar mission to ours.
Tell us about Karité’s products!
Abena: We currently have two products available: Crème Corps Hydrating Body Cream and Crème Mains Hand Cream, and both are really incredible and have been well received. The hand cream is great because it’s the perfect size to carry in your purse and it’s also TSA compliant so you can take it with you when you travel. Your skin gets extremely dry on airplanes, so it’s important to stay moisturized. Our hand cream is lighter in texture and leaves your hands feeling hydrated but not at all greasy and also has a light pleasant smell. Our body cream has been extremely popular because it feels so rich with its thicker consistency, yet it’s super smooth and hydrating when you rub it into your skin. A little goes a long way. Because we focused on making sure our products are non-toxic, they are great for the entire family. We use both products on our kids all the time!
Five-Minute Mentor
What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start a small business?
Akua: Perseverance, patience, and being open-minded are key. It’s easy to come up with an idea and bring it to fruition, but marketing, selling, and dealing with the day-to-day is pretty challenging. Sometimes you take a step forward but then end up taking two steps back. It’s the nature of being a small business. But we are starting to see things fall into place in a very positive way due to our perseverance and patience.
What was your lightbulb moment, where all the hard work felt totally worth it?
Naana: In the very beginning, you try to market pretty widely to become known because there are so many brands in the beauty space. Pretty soon after we launched, we got, and have continued to get, incredibly positive feedback on our brand from press, customers, and retailers! When someone tells you that they heard about your brand or saw your brand in a magazine or in a store, that feeling just never gets old. It’s pretty amazing.
What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?
Abena: In terms of routine, everything shifted when I had my second child about 9 months ago, so my intention has been to try to adopt a more consistent self-care practice. For now, it’s finding a bit of alone time, even if it’s only for 10 minutes, sleeping in a bit over the weekend, or going for a walk around the neighborhood. I also practice breathing exercises, which forces me to focus and calm my energy. Eventually, once I have a decent sleep routine back, I plan to get back to distance running. Naana: I also have two kids, and being a mom often means putting yourself last. Over the last year and a half, I have made it a point to really take the time to focus on myself because I’ve found that overall it’s made me more focused, healthier, and happier. I’m an early riser and I take advantage of that aspect of myself. I try to hit the gym 4 to 5 times a week first thing in the morning around 5 a.m. I lift weights and really enjoy the group classes at my gym because of the great energy. I also try to eat a well-balanced diet leaning heavily towards plant-based. (But I still indulge in sweets!) I also love going to church on Sundays with my family. Akua: I’m a new mom! I had my first child 5 months ago, so it’s been pretty life-changing for me and I am also trying to get into a more consistent self-care routine. I definitely cherish some alone time, sneaking in a nap during the day to recharge or soaking in a bath for some calm.
Balance or harmony?
Abena: Haha, is there such a thing? But seriously, it’s something I think we all constantly strive for. I think there are moments of balance but with all we have going on, it’s hard to constantly feel balanced.
Harmony speaks better to my mindset—you can try to manage things in your life in a way that causes the least amount of stress and makes you content. There also needs to be flexibility because it’s different every day. Some days you may be more tipped one way versus the other, but that’s okay.
How do you define wellness?
Naana: It’s so many things, and it’s a full-body experience, both spiritual and physical. It’s being confident and feeling good about yourself, it’s taking care of your body and being mindful of what you put in it and what you expose it to. It’s taking the time to uplift and be compassionate to someone every day. Some people may not think of skincare as part of wellness, but it very much is and that is what we are trying to teach our consumers. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and you have to be mindful of what you expose it to. It’s important to take a deep look at your beauty cabinet because studies have shown that many skincare products contain irritating chemicals that cause skin conditions such as rashes, itching, and cracked skin. Be kind to your skin and your body and strive to use natural and non-toxic products.
What book do you think all women need to read?
Abena: I have enjoyed reading Own Your Glow by Latham Thomas. It’s a really inspiring book that pushes you to focus on wellness, self-awareness, and self-love. Anyone who is struggling, who is looking for more self-care tips and wisdom—or if you just need some uplifting and a confidence-booster—this book is perfect for that. We live in some pretty crazy times right now, so I think this is a must-read for all women. I’ve had the honor of meeting Latham a few times, and she is truly such a sweetheart, is full of so much love and light, and does such good work for women. All of that translates in her book.
Pick your fuel of choice: coffee, tea, or something else (if so, what?).
Naana: Latte. I need two shots and mixed with milk. If I don’t start my day with that I’m not coherent.
Abena: Hard to choose, but I rotate through lattes, matcha lattes, flat whites, green tea, and chamomile tea. It all depends on my mood. Akua: I go back and forth between coffee and tea. Since I don’t get much sleep these days, I definitely love treating myself to a good latte in the morning.
What’s your ideal day off of work?
Naana: It’s funny because we are all moms, we feel like we are always “on” even when we have a day off. But my ideal day off would be a workout in the morning, followed up by an incredible massage at a spa. After a good lunch, curl up on the couch and enjoy a book near a window. Abena: Take a nice long walk in the morning or go for a run, then catch up with a friend over coffee/breakfast. Relax at home with a book or watch a movie. And take a nap! Akua: I’m currently on maternity leave, and I’m cherishing that I get to spend this time with my baby. I know many women struggle with their employers having little or sometimes no maternity leave at all. Right now my ideal day off would consist of catching up on sleep. Otherwise a nice lunch and spa treatment would be great!
What was your first job?
Naana: I worked in an administrative office at college making copies. It was great because I learned all about time management, which is a skill set that I use every day. Abena: I was a sales associate at a women’s clothing store, so I had a lot of interaction with customers.
Akua: I was a camp counselor for 3- and 4-year-olds. It was exhausting but I have always loved kids so really loved my job!
What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company and how did you overcome it?
Naana: The biggest obstacle is that there is no roadmap or cookbook to starting a small business. In medicine and in law, there are protocols. Starting Karité took a lot of research and learning a lot about business beyond the formulations and beyond the beauty industry. We have faced a variety of obstacles. Being that we are a family business, it was hard to give up control and delegate certain areas of the business to others, but there were some aspects that we just did not know how to do and it made more sense to bring on people who could handle those aspects of the business more efficiently.
When starting a business, there are always many obstacles and roadblocks and it can be frustrating—you have to decide whether you are going to throw in the towel or push through the challenge. We are extremely happy with our brand and the direction it’s going in, but it’s not easy. And it’s not supposed to be easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it.
How do you stay motivated?
Akua: Some people ask how we like working with each other—we love it. We have always been close and we get along incredibly well. It helps that we also have similar taste in pretty much everything. But we do each have our particular strengths, which keeps us motivated and keeps our bond stronger. Also, every time we get feedback that someone has fallen in love with our brand, it just reinforces to us that we have made really good products and we want to keep growing.
In theory, going into Sephora to shop for skincare products should be a whole lot of fun: The masks! The moisturizers! The facial mists! But when you actually step foot inside, seeing all those products can be seriously overwhelming. Where the heck are you supposed to begin? Knowing your skin type is a crucial first step. Why? “It’s important to know your skin type in order to choose the most effective skincare products and in-office treatments to promote skin wellness and slow aging,” says licensed esthetician Kimberly Bates. Keep reading to learn exactly how to figure out your skin type and put together a regimen targeted to your specific skin type and concerns.
How to Determine Your Skin Type
Not totally sure what skin type you have? The next time you cleanse your face, don’t apply any further products (even moisturizer!). Check out how your skin looks and feels about an hour later, then compare your skin’s feel and appearance to these common signs that can help you figure out whether you have oily, dry, combination, or “normal” skin.
Oily Skin
One of the biggest signifiers of oily skin is large pore size as well as an especially shiny T-zone (the part of your face that includes your forehead, nose, and chin), says Bates. “Another giveaway [of oily skin] is grease residue that builds on [the] skin’s surface during the day and easily transfers to anything pressed against the face, whether it’s a blotting tissue or your smartphone,” says Sonya Dakar, celebrity esthetician.
Dry Skin
The telltale signs of dry skin are tightness or itchiness. “You may also notice rough patches, flaking, or even cracking and bleeding,” says Dakar. Those with dry skin often experience peeling around their noses, says Jennifer Holman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. If your skin feels tight and uncomfortable after cleansing, then you probably have dry skin, says Bates.
Combination Skin
Are you a little oily here and a little dry there? Then you might have combination skin. “Typical signs of combination skin would be an oily T-zone with possibly dry skin elsewhere,” says Bates. “However, the oily regions can be around the hairline on the forehead only.”
Normal Skin
The word “normal” is kind of a misnomer because having oily or dry skin doesn’t mean you’re not normal! In the parlance of skincare, “normal” skin just means you don’t have any recurring, stand-out issues. “Your skin can be classified as normal if it isn’t particularly oily or dry and if anti-aging, acne, and sensitivity aren’t concerns on your radar—in other words, the skin type all of us wish we had,” says Dakar.
What determines your skin type?
Your skin type is determined by your genetics to some degree. For instance, if your dad had acne, then you might have him to thank for your own breakout woes, says Dakar. If your mom’s always complaining about having a flaky nose, she might be to blame for your dry skin! Hormones affect your skin type, too. “When you are on your period, your skin may experience breakouts, causing you to think your skin is oily,” says Dakar. “But once your period is over, the breakouts [might] clear right up and your skin can become flaky.” Your skin might even change seasonally depending on how much, or little, moisture is in the air. You might notice oilier skin in the summer and drier skin in the winter, says Dakar. Lifestyle factors like smoking, stress, and how well (or poorly) you sleep also play a role in how your skin appears, says Tori Burns, a certified physician’s assistant. Using the wrong products can exacerbate your skin issues, says Holman. If you’re piling on retinoids for wrinkles, this can cause peeling and make dry skin worse, says Holman. Plus, there’s nothing we can do to stop aging, and you can expect your skin to change in appearance and texture over time due to aging as well, adds Holman.
The Best Skincare Routine for Every Skin Type
Now that you know which skin type you have, it’s time to put together the best skincare routine for you.
The Best Skincare Routine for Oily Skin
“Although drying out [oily] skin feels logical, it’s not,” says Dakar. “You should avoid using stripping and dehydrating products with sulfates—particularly sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and ammonium laureth sulfate—foaming agents that leave skin feeling refreshingly clean after immediate use but that stimulate oil glands to produce more oil in the long run to overcompensate for the sudden shock of dryness.” Dakar likes treating oily skin with oil to balance it. “It may sound crazy, but feeding [oily] skin a healthy oil like omega-rich flaxseed oil sends your skin a message that it does not need to produce any extra oil on its own,” she says. Bates recommends looking for oil-free moisturizers and sunscreens to avoid excess greasiness. Retinol is a great ingredient to use when you have oily skin, says Burns. It increases cell turnover, getting rid of dead skin cell buildup in your pores, which can lead to acne.
The Best Skincare Routine for Dry Skin
Steer clear of foaming cleansers, which will be too stripping for your dry skin, and stick to oil cleansers instead, says Bates. Dakar is a fan of cleansing oils for dry skin, too. “Cleansing oils will melt away makeup and dirt while leaving skin very soft and hydrated,” she says, adding that you should wash your face with lukewarm water because hot water is dehydrating. Moisturizer is key to maintaining a healthy skin barrier, says Bates. (Your skin barrier keeps moisture in and irritants out.) Dakar suggests looking for ingredients like resveratrol, grapeseed oil, and antioxidants. “Caring for dry skin may be as simple as eliminating harsh environmental factors or kicking an old habit to the curb,” says Dakar. “Being exposed to dry air regularly and spending time in the sun without protection can cause skin to dry out. Bad habits including smoking or poor hydration are surefire contributors to dry or itchy skin.”
The Best Skincare Routine for Combination Skin
Use a gentle cleanser (so as not to over-strip your dry areas), says Bates. You may want to use two separate moisturizers: a more emollient one for your dry areas and an oil-free one for your oily regions, says Bates. Burns points out that applying two moisturizers isn’t always the most feasible option, so if you don’t think you’ll have time to commit to that, know that it may take some trial and error to find the one moisturizer that works for your entire face. Use an oil-free sunscreen and exfoliate your oily areas once or twice a week with a salicylic acid scrub, says Bates. Studies have shown that salicylic acid is effective at minimizing acne, a common skin concern for those with combination skin.
The Best Skincare Routine for Normal Skin
When you’re not too oily and not too dry, focus on cleansing and moisturizing well. You can pick whatever cleanser you like (lucky!). As far as moisturizer goes, Bates likes hyaluronic acid. “It’s the molecule responsible for skin hydration,” she says. “At age 20, we start to lose our ability to synthesize our own hyaluronic acid. By age 50, we have lost 50 percent of the capability to produce this molecule.” Because you’re not dealing with any major issues, make protecting your skin from sun damage and environmental stressors a priority. Bates recommends wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen and an antioxidant serum daily. She also suggests using an eye cream for hydration and a retinol product at night to promote cell turnover and improve wrinkles.
Common Skin Concerns and How to Deal
Beyond your skin type, there are concerns that lots of us deal with on the regular. No matter what your skin type is, you can experience all of these skin concerns, meaning having dry, acne-prone skin or dehydrated, oily skin is completely possible.
Sensitive Skin
“Sensitive skin refers to a range of conditions, from genetic ailments, such as rosacea and eczema, to reactive skin and skin that’s been sensitized due to medication or harsh products and treatments,” says Dakar. If you have a reaction and notice itchiness or a rash, this could be sensitivity to an ingredient, like retinol, or a treatment, like a chemical peel. If you’re not sure what’s causing your sensitivity, you may need to take an elimination approach, says Burns. Try one product at a time until you figure out what’s bothering your skin, she suggests.
The Best Skincare Products for Sensitive Skin
“A good regimen [for sensitive skin] includes a gentle detergent-free cleaner,” says Dakar. Strengthen your skin by using a skin barrier–repairing moisturizer, says Bates. Stay away from products with fragrance, says Bates, since this can be irritating, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen daily.
Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated skin is not the same as dry skin! Your skin will get dehydrated when there’s a lack of water in the top layer of your skin, says Bates. This is a problem because, as she explains, “When skin is dehydrated, often times it will produce more oil to make up for the missing water, which can cause breakouts and irritation.”. You can also have skin dehydration and oily skin, says Holman. This can occur when you’re using too many products that strip your skin of oil, which then causes your body to pump out more oil.
The Best Skincare Products for Dehydrated Skin
Dakar suggests feeding your face with a good facial oil and a particle-free gel exfoliator to dissolve the top layer of dead skin without over-stripping your complexion. Bates says a hyaluronic acid serum is another good product pick. “Hyaluronic acid is often referred to as a drink of water for the skin,” she says.
Acne-Prone Skin
Acne doesn’t discriminate. While it’s often associated with oily skin (too much oil is a cause of acne), any skin type—even dry skin—can be prone to acne. “Acne is caused when the follicles in your skin get clogged, so an overproduction of oil is not the only culprit,” says Burns. “Dirt, dead skin cells, and makeup can also clog pores.” Plus, your skin gets drier as you age, but hormonal changes, like menstruation and menopause, could still be causing you to experience acne, says Dakar.
The Best Skincare Products for Acne-Prone Skin
If you have oily skin, you likely experience acne, so continue with your regular skincare regimen. If you have dry skin and acne, use a gentle exfoliator to cleanse your pores. Dakar likes lactic acid because it’s gentle yet clarifying. Bates suggests using a soothing cleanser and Dakar recommends spot treating acne-prone areas so that you don’t dry out your entire face.
Aging Skin
We all get older–no shame in the game! But as you age, you might notice new skin concerns popping up. Collagen and elastin (two building blocks of skin) are produced less and less as you get older, says Bates. “When we’re young, fat in the face is evenly distributed, with some pockets here and there that plump up the forehead, temples, cheeks, and areas around the eyes and mouth,” says Dakar. “With age, that fat loses volume, clumps up, and shifts downward, so features that were formerly round may sink, and skin that was smooth and tight gets loose and sags.” While we’re all for embracing wrinkles with grace—they’re a sign of a well-lived life, after all—if you want to address some of these changes, there’s nothing wrong with that either.
The Best Skincare Products for Aging Skin
If you only have time to use two skincare products to address signs of aging, let them be sunscreen and a retinol, says Burns. The sun is the number one cause of premature aging, says Holman, which is why SPF is crucial. And according to a study published in JAMA Dermatology, retinol significantly improves the look of wrinkles. Time for one or two more products? Burns says an antioxidant serum will help protect you against environmental aggressors that cause aging. Vitamin C is a popular antioxidant that is readily available in skincare products. Studies have shown that vitamin C protects against photoaging and even boosts collagen production. Meanwhile, Dakar likes eye cream. “Our first signs of aging happen around our eye area where we have no oil glands, so eye cream is your best friend.”
