When you absolutely need to look your best, you have to pay attention to the little things.
It’s always the little things—not dramatic changes—that really make all the difference. No matter your body type, profession, personal taste, or preference, it is possible to look and feel good without having to change your entire style, much less who you are at your core.
With that said, certain types of faux pas can be especially damaging. Avoid becoming a victim of these sneaky saboteurs by following these tips.
1. Leaving Bits of Lint and Animal Fur on Your Clothes
People notice details, and a single piece of lint can stand out, especially if it doesn’t match your clothing.
Rather than color-coordinating your lint, we’d recommend getting rid of it entirely. Lint rollers are amazing, but if you don’t have one handy, some tape will do just fine.
Better yet, a more eco-friendly option is this self-cleaning fur and lint remover brush. Remove lint and hair from your clothes with the brush, then put the brush back into the case to remove the hair.
It eliminates paper waste, and it’s affordable enough that you can buy several: one for your home, one for your car, and one for your desk at work.
2. See-through Fabrics
To be clear: Thin, gauzy skirts can be a great addition to your wardrobe. Do yourself a favor, though, and make sure that they don’t go totally transparent when you end up backlit.
Some fabrics will do their best to trick you. They look totally opaque in the dim light of morning. By the time you’re headed out for lunch, though, the light shines right through them, treating all of your coworkers to a glimpse of what’s underneath.
If you’re totally in love with a thin skirt, be sure to wear leggings underneath. You want to preserve a little mystery. And if you’ve got a sheer shirt you really love, just wear a tank top underneath.
These affordable Hanes tanks come in an array of colors, making them a comfy and versatile undershirt option for any see-through blouse you just can’t put back in the closet. Be sure to wash them carefully, though, as they are 100 percent cotton.
3. Wearing Clothes With Tiny Rips, Frays, and Other Minor Damage
These types of issues sneak up on you. You’ll wear the same jeans every day, and you won’t notice as they start to fray. Or you’ll ignore the missing button on your favorite shirt simply because you’ve worn it so many times.
Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and that includes clothes. While most rips, holes, or missing buttons can be easily repaired with a needle and thread (consider making a small investment in a sewing kit if you don’t have one already), they can also go from a minor flaw to a deal-breaker quickly. A small tear becomes a gaping hole fast!
A tailor may be able to help you with the trickier hems and holes. Cute patches are another option for covering holes beyond your sewing capabilities. Eventually, however, clothes do just become too worn out to wear—and although it may be hard to let go, just think of the new items you can replace these with.
4. Not Breaking out the Iron
Ironing clothes takes a lot of time, and in busy schedules, that step often gets left out. Still, wrinkled clothes can throw off your entire image. Make sure you have a good iron and ironing board for when you need to make a good, smooth impression.
It’s also a good idea to invest in some wrinkle-removing spray like the Downy Wrinkle Release Spray—which multi-tasks as a static remover and odor eliminator, too. It’s not exactly an ironing replacement, as tougher fabrics will still require some heat, but it’s perfect for last-minute touch-ups or travel. Just spray it on, shake it out, and go confidently in the direction of your wrinkle-free dreams.
5. Rolling up Your Sleeves Incorrectly
When the seasons change, you might find yourself rolling up your sleeves to stay cool. It’s actually quite a fashionable look, provided that you take the time to do a double-roll.
That technique uses two simple folds, leaving your cuffs looking clean and precise. For a simple yet polished business-casual look, pair a white button-up shirt, cuffs nicely folded, with dark jeans and boots—it’s a classic look, regardless of gender.
Just make sure to pay attention to those cuffs. A good sleeve fold adds class, but the common method of rolling them up all willy-nilly leaves you looking messy and unkempt.
6. Too Many Accessories
Accessories are essential to your look. A single, simple necklace can make a great statement piece, for instance, or a scarf can pull your entire outfit together.
The ideal accessory will be eye catching and (this is important) appropriate for the occasion. Where you’ll get into trouble is if you start piling on the gaudy accessories to cover up a simple outfit. Don’t worry about being too plain; that’s a much better option than going overboard and risking looking tacky.
7. Worn-out Clothing
A great way to make an awful first impression is to wear a shirt that was white in a former life but is now a weird shade of gray-yellow. It’s inevitable that the whitest of whites start to discolor, and once they do, it’s time to either put them in the discard pile or do something about them. Prevent your whites from becoming former versions of themselves by making whites a separate load. Mixing them with colors can cause them to become dingy and gray.
And if you’ve just got pesky stains on your favorite white tee, try out this natural stain remover that promises to show results—or your money back!
8. Wearing Hair Ties as Bracelets
You’re not a teenager anymore (well, actually, we don’t know—you might be, in which case, disregard that sentence). While you’ve been wearing hair ties on your wrists for years, it’s never really been okay.
Hair tie bracelets look tacky, but there is hope for those of you with a habit of wearing hair ties on your wrist. These hair tie bracelets offer a sleek-looking design that your hair tie fits around, making it seem like an intentional cute accessory—that just happens to hold your hair tie.
9. Pants That Are Too Long
There are many things in life that would classify as being a drag, but your pants shouldn’t be one of them. Hemlines that flirt with the floor are just fine, but you’ve gone too far when they make contact. Along with carrying around dirt and other grime, long pants can become damaged from their trip.
Prevent this fashion faux pas by visiting the tailor. Bring the shoes you like to wear with them the most along so the tailor has an idea of how much length to remove.
If you’re really attached to some long pants, though, and you don’t want to change them, consider wearing taller shoes. These affordable heels come in every color so you can get a pair to match any outfit; this way, even your longest pants won’t drag on the ground.
10. Wearing Athletic Shoes in Non-athletic Situations
Sure, your tennis shoes are comfortable, but unless you’re on a tennis court, they look out of place. Athletic shoes stick out like a sore thumb and can make you look like a teenager (and not in a good way).
This isn’t a hard and fast rule, however. There is grey area between what is an athletic shoe and what is a cute shoe. Tennis shoes often look messy unless you’re working out in them, but certain sneakers have an air of class and style.
If you’re attached to wearing athletic shoes but don’t want to look like you just left the gym, Adidas sneakers are a classic.
11. While We’re At It: Not Cleaning Your Shoes
You wouldn’t leave the house in mud-covered clothing, so why would you walk outside with dirty shoes? A pair of less-than-clean kicks can ruin your outfit faster than you can click your heels together.
A quick swipe when you walk through the door can prevent buildup on heels and boots, but your sneakers are often a different story. Their material can make stains difficult to erase. Fortunately, you can usually rid shoes of unsightly marks by tossing them in the washer.
According to USAToday.com, you’ll need to sprinkle the insides of each sneaker with 3 tablespoons of baking soda and leave them overnight. Shake the soda out in the morning.
Remove the laces from your sneakers and place them in a pillowcase to stop them from getting tangled in the wash. Wipe as much dirt and debris from your shoes as you can with a scrubbing brush, then toss the laces and the shoes in the washer. Protect your shoes and your washer by throwing four to six towels in, as well. This will keep your shoes protected and stop them from banging against the washing machine.
Use liquid detergent and wash the shoes in a cold, delicate cycle. Allow the shoes to air-dry once they are clean. Avoid putting them in the dryer, as its heat can damage your sneakers.
If you’re constantly getting your shoes dirty, it might be a good idea to invest in a shoe cleaning kit as well—this one includes cleaner, a brush, and a towel.
12. Wearing Clothes That Don’t Fit Correctly
Nothing can kill your style quite as quickly as an oversized shirt or too-tight pants. Even if the clothes feel comfortable, if they don’t fit, don’t wear them.
However, falling in love with a piece of clothing that doesn’t exactly fit is a common tragedy. You can likely fix it, however, by taking the garment to a tailor.
Do remember that different clothing manufacturers size their garments quite differently. If you’re a size 2 at one store, you might be a size 6 somewhere else, so trust the fit, not the tag. Always take the time to try on clothes before you buy them.
If you have a dress or blouse that is too big but just so cute, you could accessorize it with a fashion belt around the waist for a more fitted, put-together look.
13. That Applies to the Shoes, Too
Shoes that are too large or too tight create an interesting effect, and not in a good way. Oversized shoes make you look like you’ve got a bit role in the upcoming IT remake, whereas small shoes can make your feet look like they’re planning a prison break.
Again, try shoes on before you buy them, and if you’re not sure if you’re wearing the right size, get a second opinion before you head somewhere important.
Raw, red skin on the heels and feet from too big or too small shoes isn’t comfortable or cute, either, so if you’ve got shoes that rub and blister, try these heel cushion adhesive inserts.
14. Wearing White Clothing That Isn’t White Anymore
Alas, even the whitest whites will eventually start to turn a pale yellow color. The good news is that you can usually restore your whites with a simple bleach bath, and if you’ve got an aversion to bleach, baking soda or hydrogen peroxide can work wonders.
Whatever you use to whiten your clothes, use it consistently. A t-shirt with a vaguely straw-colored hue doesn’t have the same look as a crisp white top.
15. Not Taking Care of Your Nails
A manicure can turn nails from cute to cringe-worthy in a matter of minutes and all it takes is a single chip in the polish. Although keeping a perfect manicure for more than a week or two is just about impossible, you can increase its lifespan by following these simple steps.
First, apply an even and thin base coat. Allow the layer to completely dry, which usually takes at least two minutes before you put on another coat. Use a gel-finish top coat or an at-home LED lamp to help your nails dry.
If you want a professional manicure, ask them to skip the top coat and apply the gel finishing coat when you get home.
And don’t forget to keep your cuticles and fingers looking healthy—dry, cracked skin is as unsightly as it is uncomfortable. We like Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream, and this cute little jar is perfect to stick in your bag or keep at your desk.
16. Carrying a Massive Bag
Sure, it’s great to have a bag that can carry your laptop, makeup kit, car keys, and body cream while still leaving enough room for a full-grown chihuahua, but a big bag can easily throw off the rest of your outfit. After all, a bag is an accessory.
Opt for a smaller bag for job interviews and other important events, and if you need a big bag to hold your laptop when you’re headed to the office, there are plenty of affordable (and adorable!) computer bag options that aren’t too bulky.
17. Missing a Belt Loop (and Other Minor Mistakes)
Pay attention to the little things. You can have a perfectly put together outfit, only to sabotage yourself by missing a belt loop or leaving a visible zipper.
We’re not saying that every inch of your outfit has to be absolutely perfect, but do a quick ocular pat down of yourself before you leave the house; if you don’t have a decent-sized mirror, now’s the time to get one.
Make sure that you’re not making any obvious mistakes.
18. Making Too Many Adjustments to Your Outfit
On the other hand, once you leave the house, try to stop worrying. Don’t constantly pick at your clothes or mess with your sleeves; guys, leave the tie alone. Fidgeting with your clothing is a sure way to look messy, even if there’s nothing actually wrong with your look.
If you really can’t stop fidgeting, recognize that you’re a little stressed out. Take a moment to collect yourself, squeeze a tennis ball, or do whatever else you have to do to stop picking your outfit apart.
If you can’t stop stressing about the way you look, a compact mirror you can carry in your bag or keep at your desk at work might settle your nerves a bit—but beware, the magnifying ones might get a little too up-close and personal. These small mirrors from Amazon come it several chic patterns.
19. Clothes That Are Pilling
It happens to the best of ‘em. A few times into wearing, you notice that certain spots on your garment are a little rougher than others. The next thing you know, a bunch of tiny little balls join the party and take up space on those rough patches, which are most likely in the armpit or thigh areas. These clothing-crashers are called pills and are formed when fabric rubs together.
Blended fabrics are usually the most susceptible to becoming pilling victims, saysGood Housekeeping magazine. Fiber blends that contain three or more fabrics have a higher incidence of pilling, especially those that contain both natural and synthetic fibers.
To prevent damage, turn your garment inside out before washing. Doing so prevents the fabric from rubbing against other clothes in the wash, stopping the pills before they wreak havoc.
The gold standard for pill-prone garments is hand-washing. Placing your washer on the gentle or delicate setting is second best. Air-drying your clothing can also help to keep it safe. Once everything is washed and dried, store or hang your garments inside out.
If you’ve got a favorite sweater that’s already pilling, however, you can remove most of the fuzz with a simple trick. First, rub a pumice stone over the fabric to loosen up the little fuzz balls, then run a lint roller over the fabric to remove them.
20. Not Getting Your Favorite Pair of Shoes Repaired
We get it; you love your shoes, even if the soles are fading away and the leather is scuffed. The good news is that a talented cobbler can perform those much-needed repairs, restoring your favorite kicks to their former glory.
The bad news is that the longer you wait, the more you’ll pay—and the worse you’ll look. If you’re going to keep that old pair of shoes, take care of them.
If you’ve got a favorite pair of shoes that are coming unattached to the sole, you may not need to go to a cobbler just yet—invest in a good bottle of shoe glue to keep on hand for minor fixes.
21. For Guys: Unkempt Facial Hair
The beard is back, folks. Facial hair hasn’t been this fashionable since the Old West. With a great beard comes great responsibility, though, and too many of us are forgetting that beard maintenance takes work. A neat, masculine face-mane is one thing. Grizzly Adams is another.
To keep from looking sloppy, make sure that you keep your beard neat and trimmed. That means shaving your neck, and probably your cheeks as well. And don’t underestimate the power of a good beard oil—moisturizing facial hair and the skin underneath is essential for a healthy-looking beard. This beard care kit comes with 100 percent natural and organic beard oil, beard wax, a brush, and scissors for trimming.
When trimming and shaving, remember: There should be clear lines demarcating “beard” and “non-beard.” Otherwise, you’re not just Brooklyn hip. You’re mountain-man messy.
22. For Women: Visible Bra Straps
There’s a war going down in our culture today, and internet comments threads are the battlefields. That war is over the appropriateness of visible bra straps.
“Adult women wear bras, and people should deal with it,” say the pro-bra-strap ladies who just don’t care.
“Bra straps are never, ever appropriate in a professional setting,” say the human resource managers.
Given the controversy, it’s safest to keep your straps covered up. You might not look like you’re making a point; you might just look like you got dressed in the dark. This is not to take a side in the debate.
We’re just saying that the smart money is always on covering undergarments. These clips and straps work great, or go with a strapless bra.
23. Wearing Oversized Clothes to Hide Your Figure
Oversized clothing is “in” right now, but don’t play into the trend just to hide your figure when you’re feeling bloated or self-conscious. Tuck in those oversized tops or add a belt; make sure that your figure’s visible.
You rock, and there’s no reason to sink into your clothing. If you want to go a few sizes up, have a plan and make an effort to balance your outfit’s proportions.
24. Excessively Long Sleeves
Long sleeves can easily make you look like a little kid. Unfortunately, if you’ve got short arms, a shirt might flatter the rest of your figure perfectly but leave your arms looking like flopping noodles.
If you don’t want to roll up, go ahead and give your tailor a call—and if you don’t have a tailor, get one. For a few bucks, you can get a perfectly crafted look, provided that you’re on a tailor’s good side, and you’ll never go back to straight off-the-rack clothes again. That applies to both men and women (and guys, having a tailor will instantly put you way ahead of your competition).
But if you’ve got short arms and don’t want to cough up the extra money for a tailor, you’ve still got options. A three-fourth sleeve shirt does wonders to make the arms appear longer. Pair this one with leggings or jeggings.
25. Going Really Retro (Without Any Sort of Twist)
We’re fine with retro looks, to be absolutely clear. You just need to have some sort of a modern update, or you’ll end up looking like you got stranded in a 1980s (or earlier!) department store.
Modern accessories can provide a great, easy update. Your shoes and bottoms can also be modernized to complement a vintage top.
Just take it easy on the nostalgic items, and you’ll be fine; otherwise, you’ll look like you didn’t spend enough time thinking this through.
26. Taking the Term “Boyfriend Blazer” Too Literally
There are some great boyfriend blazers in the boutiques these days, but you can’t literally lift a boyfriend’s jacket and expect to look chic. What the designers call a “boyfriend blazer” is actually cut to strike a very feminine figure. Blazers designed for men, meanwhile, will make you look like David Byrne during his big-suit era.
No matter how romantic you think it is to snuggle in your boyfriend’s clothes, doing so likely gives you a sloppy appearance. If you like the idea of donning garments that have that boyfriend-type style, look for boyfriend-cut clothes. Despite the name, this type of clothing is cut for feminine figures, and looks amazing.
27. Showing up With Wet Hair
Nothing says “I overslept” like going out with wet hair. You get a pass if it’s raining, but otherwise, put that blow dryer to work. You want your look to be complete before you show up at an important work function or, God forbid, a hot date.
Wet hair sends the message that you were rushing to get out of the house, which suggests general sloppiness. We get it, though—you totally were rushing out of the house.
28. Leggings as Pants
This fashion faux pas has taken the nation by storm. We blame the rise of the yoga pant.
Leggings can be a key ingredient in a super cute outfit, but don’t mistake them for fully formed bottoms in themselves. Throw on a short skirt or wear a dress if your shirt is belly-grazing; the key is to keep your backside from hitting people in the face. That’s just sloppy (even if it’s incredibly comfortable).
Leggings can be paired with longer shirts or tunics for a more polished look if you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to the comfort factor of wearing leggings as pants. Just make sure your bum is covered.
29. Day-old Eye Makeup
It can be tempting to leave yesterday’s mascara and eyeliner on rather than going through the arduous process of removing and re-applying. Don’t give into temptation; people can totally tell, and you’re really not saving that much time in the long run.
On day two, mascara gets clumpy. Old eyeliner fades unevenly, leaving you looking like a Picasso painting. There’s only one way to keep your eye-makeup game going strong, and that’s to clean and re-apply daily. Sorry to break the bad news.
To make it easy on yourself, keep a pack of makeup removing wipes in your nightstand, so you never have an excuse to sleep in your eye makeup. That way, you won’t even be tempted to go to work the next morning in your day-old liner and mascara.
30. Smudges on Your Glasses
A cute pair of frames is great, but you’ll spoil the effect if you let lenses get smudged and greasy.
Keep a microfiber cloth handy at all times, and be sure to rub down your glasses before an important encounter. You definitely want to look your best if you’re getting close enough for someone to see your glasses in such detail.
Also, consider investing in a lens cleaning kit with spray and a cloth to get off tougher smudges—plus, it can be used on your phone and laptop screens, too.
When you absolutely need to look your best, you have to pay attention to the little things.
It’s always the little things—not dramatic changes—that really make all the difference. No matter your body type, profession, personal taste, or preference, it is possible to look and feel good without having to change your entire style, much less who you are at your core.

Developing your own personal style comes with determining which brands and designers you like the most. Whether you prefer a bohemian or preppy look, there are clothes and accessories that will help you build your unique wardrobe. Each designer offers their own flair—from the fabric of their leggings to the shape of their handbags. Sometimes, though, the brands we love are priced beyond what we’d prefer to spend. But thanks to Amazon, many designer clothes are sold online at a fraction of the price, so you can get your favorite brands without breaking your budget. From Vera Wang and Lacoste to Dolce & Gabbana and Tommy Hilfiger, our list includes some of the top labels in the world, all of which you can get directly on Amazon. And they’re the real deal, too. So whether you’re looking for a new pair of shoes or a cocktail dress, we have it all right here.
1. Invest in the trendiest sunnies for any season.
Whether it’s spring, summer, fall, or winter, a high-quality pair of sunglasses is essential for any ensemble. After all, protecting your eyes is critical. But beyond the health benefits, sunglasses add personality to your outfit. They’re an accessory that you can literally wear all year long. So why not invest in the best?
These Burberry Sunglasses make style easy with their patterned sides and signature Burberry appeal. They even arrive in a durable case with a special cleaning cloth.

2. Stock up on high-quality underwear.
DKNY produces some seriously comfortable undergarments. Their Signature Lace Bikini Panties are offered on Amazon in a spectrum of colors and sizes—allowing you to find a set that’s just right for you. The panties are designed to show little seam if any.
You get the comfort along with the style. And not only are the Amazon prices lower than what you’d find in brick and mortar stores, but the package will be delivered right to your door also.

3. Shop with the ultimate style in tow.

The tote is the ideal size for day trips, mini shopping excursions, or a long day at the office. Amazon offers the bag in six colors from pink to black to yellow. Snag one as your go-to tote.

4. Be ready for any night out.
Comfortable, sleek dresses have become even more popular in recent years. Throwing on a flattering dress is polished style at its easiest and finest. So we have some great news! You can purchase a BCBG V-Neck Dress from the comfort of your own home.
The dress is snug at the waist, sleeveless, and machine washable. You can wear this BCBGeneration stunner with a simple necklace and a pair of shoes for any occasion, from weddings to formal work events to date nights.

5. Expand your comfy pants beyond leggings.
What’s better than a cozy pair of pants? Not a whole lot, in our opinion. Snug-fitting, stretchy pants continue to be a popular trend, and we understand why: They’re incredibly comfortable. Just throw on a pair of flats with these DKNY Womens Ponte Pants and you’re ready for a casual workday or a Saturday outing.
Their stretchy fabric will quickly make them a favorite.

6. Choose a heavenly scent for any outfit.
Your scent is certainly a part of your persona. It’s an integrated piece of your style and ensemble. So before you head out the door, make sure you have a fragrance that represents you. Other people do notice! Miss Dior—produced by the famous French designer Christian Dior in the mid-1900s—is an iconic fragrance. The perfume carries a timeless scent of fresh flowers and white musk.
In addition to its joyful floral elements, its top notes offer a burst of raspberries and pomegranates—making this an irresistible combination. Miss Dior is classic enough to be worn every day and for special occasions like weddings and black tie events.

7. Throw on something chic for those cooler days.
Dress codes have relaxed in modern years, but you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. A perfect combination can be found in many of Ralph Lauren’s products, including the Women’s V-Neck Long Sleeve T-Shirt that comes in a range of colors—from gray to blue to red.
For a chilly evening at home or an outdoor gathering with friends, this long-sleeve cotton tee will keep you feeling stylish and cozy. The signature polo logo sends a signal that you’re hip in even the most casual of situations.

8. Choose a little black dress that wows.
We’re sure that the classic little black dress will never go out of style. They’re ideal for dinner parties, date nights, black tie events, and more. But why choose a boring style? Instead, opt for this exquisite number from the one-and-only Vera Wang. While the Vera Wang label might lead you to believe it’s out of your price range, that’s not the case with this Sleeveless Cocktail Dress on Amazon.
The price is surprisingly reasonable from such a distinguished designer. After all, Vera Wang has made wedding gowns for the likes of Chelsea Clinton, Khloé Kardashian, and Mariah Carey—not to mention all of the Olympic figure skaters’ costumes she’s designed.

9. Slide your feet into style.
Kate Spade didn’t just design handbags. She also created jewelry, clothing, shoes, and various other accessories. From dressy to more casual, her line offers versatility and your choice of pieces that fit your unique style perfectly. Kate Spade Lilly Sneakers are supportive and durable but still boast her iconic style.
Available in a range of colors and patterns, these lightweight sneakers might just become your go-to casual shoe.

10. Opt for a statement bag with a purpose.
It comes as no surprise that the bags and purses we carry make a statement. And that’s evident with anything designed by Michael Kors. For over three decades, Michael Kors has produced shoes, watches, handbags, and other accessories for those who enjoy luxurious, timeless designs. Add one of their creations to your collection with a Women’s Jet Set Large Crossbody Bag, which has leather trim and a fully lined interior.
The adjustable shoulder strap gives you options to make it as comfortable as possible.

11. Add a pop of personality to your winter gear.
Yes, you can remain stylish even on the chilliest days. This Tommy Hilfiger Toggle Coat is primarily made of wool and polyester—making it warm but not overly heavy. The attached hood is a bonus for those particularly windy and snowy days.
Its versatility is perhaps its biggest selling point, though: It can be worn with business attire or a nice pair of jeans. Many similarly styled coats carry quite a hefty price tag, but not this Tommy Hilfiger model offered on Amazon.

12. Strap on the best.
During the warmer months, it’s common to lose the shoes and keep your feet in sandals. If you’re looking to step up your style from the average flip flops, Tory Burch will provide you with the polished look you’re hoping for.
Available in a range of colors, let Tory Burch Women’s Miller Sandals become a chic option on your shoe rack.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076BRRCGS”]Tory Burch Miller Sandals, $178.00 and up from Amazon [/link-button]
13. Don’t forget your wardrobe staples.
A good pair of jeans is as good as gold, especially if they fit your curves just right. Levi’s is one of the best-known brands in the world for a reason. The craftsmanship is backed by more than 160 years of denim expertise. Levi jeans flatter a range of body types, and the quality of materials simply can’t be beat.
While you may expect these jean favorites to cost a lot, that’s not the case with the Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. Gold Label Women’s Totally Shaping Skinny Jean. Their super stretchy fabric makes it feel like you’re wearing leggings, when in fact they’re genuine jeans that just happen to offer exceptional comfort.

14. Honor the great fashion contributors.
There’s a whole lot to love about Kate Spade’s style. Her handbags are the epitome of class and fashion. If you want to honor her contributions to the fashion world, consider her classic Smooth Leather Tote Handbag with Matching Wristlet Pouch. The large handbag is sturdy and roomy.
The wristlet is sufficient on its own for a night out but pairs easily with the handbag for a full ensemble. No need to wait for the combo to go on sale elsewhere, snag them at the discounted price on Amazon.

15. Let your shoes do the talking.
Betsey Johnson is known for her colorful, eccentric designs. While you may be familiar with her handbags, she also creates a collection of shoes that are known to stand out. Her Women’s Diskko Heels aren’t for the faint-hearted.
With 5.5” heels and a platform of over an inch, these shoes will help you reach the sky (or match the height of your date). So go ahead and let your personality shine. A pair of these heels will make a standard outfit—like jeans and a black top—an immediately eye-catching ensemble.

16. Snag designer eyewear without the designer price.
Prada brings supreme elegance to their sunglasses line that flatters any face structure. Check out these Prada Women’s Sunglasses for an iconic design with gradient lenses.
And with polarized, 100 percent UV protection, you’ll know your eyes are protected on warm summer days and bright winter mornings.

17. Treat your feet.
When you think of comfy clogs, the Birkenstock name probably comes to mind. That’s because Birkenstock has been making shoes since the 1700s. You read that right: Johann Adam Birkenstock registered his shoe-making business in 1774. Since then, the company has come to be known for their comfortable styles, and the Birkenstock design offers arch support and shock absorption, all while being lightweight and durable.
In other words, there’s no excuse to put off grabbing a pair of suede Birkenstocks. Try these snazzy Unisex Boston Soft Footbed Clogs. Your feet will be glad you did.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Birkenstock-Unisex-Boston-Footbed-Taupe/dp/B000G6VC5K”]Birkenstock Boston Suede Clogs, $140.00 from Amazon [/link-button]
18. Sweat it out in style.
Who says designer wear is just for the office and nights on the town? Whether you’re an avid Bikram yogi or simply enjoy jogging in your neighborhood, feeling good (and having gear that fits) is an important part of exercising. And lululemon has been at the top of the leggings world for a while now—and for good reason.
Their pants fit exceptionally well and are made with high-quality materials, including their signature Luon fabric, which is sweat-wicking, breathable, and boasts four-way stretch. So before your next trip to the gym, slip into a pair of lululemon Wunder Under Crop III Yoga Pants.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Lululemon-Wunder-Under-Pants-Black/dp/B01DKOJ1MA”]Lululemon Wunder Under Yoga Pants, $110.00 and up from Amazon[/link-button]
19. Tell time trendily.
Wrap some style around your wrist with an exclusive Lacoste Women’s Casual Watch. Select a vibrant color like pink or red to brighten any outfit. Or opt for a more neutral shade like white.
No matter what you choose, you’ll have that iconic crocodile logo looking up at you every time you check the time.

20. Give your girls the best.
Three things Victoria Secret is known for: comfort, style, and fit. Choose a bra from their PINK collection for an undergarment you’re likely to wear daily. Victoria’s Secret Pink Wear Everywhere Push-Up Bra can be worn classically or in a cross back, depending on your outfit.
The extra push-up provides a lift while still offering plenty of support.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Victorias-Secret-Womens-Pink-Everywhere/dp/B013X5G7GE”]Victoria’s Secret Pink Push-Up Bra, $29.95 and up from Amazon[/link-button]
21. Rock your job interview or work presentation.
A sharp suit jacket goes a long way toward filling out your professional wardrobe. And while some jackets are stiff and uncomfortable, they don’t have to be. BCBGeneration Women’s Tuxedo Blazer, for example, is made of polyester and spandex and lined with polyester jersey.
That sounds pretty comfy, doesn’t it? The shape of this blazer is sleek and provides a tasteful blend of formal and casual. So after a day at the office, you can head to happy hour without needing to change.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/BCBGeneration-Womens-Tuxedo-Blazer-X-Small/dp/B01FWBUY5M”]BCBGeneration Women’s Tuxedo Blazer, $86.69 and up from Amazon[/link-button]
The jacket is classy enough to wear with jeans or over a dress. Don’t like the sherpa collar? No problem. It’s removable.

23. Diversify your legging collection.
While brands like lululemon take up a large share of the leggings market, other designers have come up with stylish, beautifully fitting pants, too. Calvin Klein Women’s Modern Cotton Leggings, for instance, are made especially for comfort.
These leggings are intended for sleepwear and lounging—not necessarily wearing out on the town. But they rival the best in the business with their well-fitting design and mix of cotton, modal, and spandex fabrics. Say “hello” to the most comfortable Sunday you’ve had in years.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Calvin-Klein-Womens-Modern-Legging/dp/B00GBD4RTU”]Calvin Klein Modern Cotton Leggings, $21.98 and up from Amazon[/link-button]
24. Personalize your bling.
A special piece of jewelry helps to make your outfit feel like yours. And it doesn’t need to be extravagant. A simple alphabet necklace, like this one from Kate Spade, is a beautiful way to add a bit of your personality to your wardrobe.
Whether you decide to put your first or last initial or the initial of someone you love, like a child or significant other, it will carry special meaning wherever you wear it.

25. Be ready to celebrate in any season.
It’s natural to stock your closet with spring and summer dresses, but what about the cooler months? A Vera Wang Long Sleeve Lace Cocktail Dress ensures you’re ready for a wedding, holiday party, or date night during the fall or wintertime.
The lacy overlay gives it a fancy edge, and you can choose from black, red, and navy shades so you’ll have a stunning option for all your special events.

26. Embrace the classics.
It’s hard to find a brand that’s more recognized than Ralph Lauren. Since 1967, the company has produced everything from clothing and apparel to fragrances and accessories. Polo shirts and button-ups are among the most popular Ralph Lauren items. Thanks to Amazon, you can now add an Oxford classic fit button down shirt to your wardrobe at a steal of a price.
It’s made of 100 percent cotton and carries the famous embroidered polo logo. Sport this shirt on the job or for a casual evening out.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Lauren-Womens-Classic-Oxford-Button/dp/B01516NX88″]Ralph Lauren Women’s Oxford Shirt, $48.67 and up from Amazon [/link-button]
27. Snuggle into a cotton fleece hoodie.
Athletic wear has become increasingly popular in recent years. Rather than just sporting it for exercise, it’s fashionable to wear athleisure on casual days. And we understand why; it’s super comfy and often extra flattering. As one of the top athletic wear brands, Lululemon designs more than just leggings. The lululemon Scuba hoodie, for example, is made with a relaxed fit using cotton fleece and polyester.
The front can be zipped up past the chin for those chilly days, and the waistline rests at hip length for a slimming shape. The hood will block out the cold, whether you’re leaving the Pilates studio or walking the dog. Welcome supreme comfort to your closet with this cushy hoodie.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Lululemon-Scuba-Hoodie/dp/B01JZMO0KE”]Lululemon Scuba Hoodie, $129.99 and up from Amazon[/link-button]
28. Stand out from the crowd.
Part of assembling your own personal style is being willing to step outside of the norm. Instead of blending in, choose to be yourself. And Betsey Johnson designs help you do just that. Take the Mini Crossbody Satchel, for example.
This cross-body bag featuring stars and moons isn’t something you see every day, and it’s large enough to fit your wallet, phone, keys, and other essentials.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Betsey-Johnson-Harlie-Satchel-Crossbody/dp/B01N3YYHO9″]Betsey Johnson Mini Crossbody Satchel, $26.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
29. Choose comfort above all.
If you’ve ever worn a pair of Birkenstocks, you know the level of comfort can’t be beat. That doesn’t just apply to their clogs, either. A pair of Mayari Adjustable Toe Loop Sandals will make your feet feel supported all day long.
And Birkenstock has even been named the “Most Vegan-Friendly Shoe Company” by PETA. So why not add these affordable sandals to your laidback summer wardrobe?
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Birkenstock-Womens-Mayari-Birkibuc-Sandal/dp/B002LZUQBU”]Birkenstock Mayari Toe Loop Sandal, $89.95 and up from Amazon[/link-button]
30. Incorporate casual.
Jean jackets have come in and out of fashion more times than we can remember. But for now, they seem to have risen to the top of the fashion charts. With this in mind, now is the time to snag the best of the best. And when it comes to jeans, that inevitably means Levi’s.
Made with premium denim, the Levi’s Authentic Trucker Jacket features a fold-over collar and shank-button hardware. It’s classy and flattering, without losing any durability.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Levis-Womens-Authentic-Trucker-Jackets/dp/B0178ZX4YI”]Levi’s Women’s Authentic Trucker Jacket, $54.72 and up from Amazon [/link-button]
31. See with style (literally).
Eyeglasses give you an extra opportunity to add style to your ensemble. Fortunately, Gucci makes that easy. The Gucci GG0027 Eyeglasses fit prescription lenses and can be found on Amazon for a fraction of the cost you’ll see at an optometrist’s office.
Seriously, a pair is priced at under $160 on Amazon. It’s impossible not to love this sleek style.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZZ63YSM/”]Gucci GG0027 Eyeglasses, $123.70 from Amazon[/link-button]
32. Welcome the top designers to your jewelry collection.

33. Opt for a classy t-shirt.
Several staple items should be in every woman’s closet. And pretty high on that list is a high-quality t-shirt. While you can find a comfortable t-shirt almost anywhere, the quality and style of Ralph Lauren are hard to argue with. Our favorite is the Ralph Lauren Women’s V-Neck Jersey T-Shirt.
The neckline is flattering, the shirt is lightweight, and it carries the iconic pony logo. And on Amazon, these designer shirts are unbelievably affordable.

34. Protect your eyes fashionably.
There’s hardly a day when we leave the house without a pair of sunglasses. In other words, sunglasses are just as important as the type of dress or handbag you’re carrying. So why not go with an irresistible style like Dolce & Gabbana’s DG 4138 Sunglasses?
You’ll get plenty of use out of them—and plenty of compliments.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Dolce-Gabbana-Sunglasses-Frame-Shiny/dp/B007EP3V4G”]Dolce & Gabbana’s DG 4138 Sunglasses, $158.00 from Amazon[/link-button]
35. Include some basics.
Building your wardrobe isn’t just about having the luxury items. You should also invest in quality basics like shirts, pants, and activewear. That’s why we had to include Tommy Hilfiger Henley Tanks.
They’re super soft and form-fitting—and they go with just about anything. Throw one on with a pair of jeans or leggings and you’re all set for a comfortable outing or day around the house.

Beauty and fashion don’t have to be hard to come by. Even if you’re not a style pro, you can make yourself look chic and trendy without too much effort or investment. With the right tips and products, your look will be fresh and full of personality. You’ll also save time as you get ready—whether that’s for work, day excursions, or evenings out on the town. Having beauty hacks and some go-to items that represent you is essential—because when we pretend to be someone else, we don’t feel our most beautiful anyway.
That’s why we’re sharing 19 style hacks that will save your look in a pinch. And they’re super easy, too. Anyone can incorporate these into their routine for a more beautiful, authentic style. So, go conquer your look, ladies!
1. Clean and refresh your hair—even when you’re pressed for time.
Ever wake up late and feel rushed in the morning? Or want to freshen up after work before your date night? Make dry shampoo your savior. No one will notice that you didn’t hop in the shower for a full cleanse.
A few spritzes of Batiste Dry Shampoo will soak up the excess oil and grease in your hair. You’ll be left with a fresher look and extra body to boot. A bonus? This shampoo provides a subtle fresh scent—nothing that’s too overpowering.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Batiste-Shampoo-Fresh-Ounce-199ml/dp/B00GMP4ZN0/”]Batiste Shampoo Dry Fresh, $14.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
2. Manicure your own nails.
Sometimes it’s almost impossible to find time in our schedules to go and sit for a manicure. But it’s not the only way to get stunning, polished nails that last. Imagine watching your favorite Netflix show while you beautify your toes and fingers. Sounds pretty relaxing, doesn’t it? There’s no reason to even leave the house and drive to the salon. You can save time and money with your own Professional Electric Manicure and Pedicure Set.
With this equipment, you can file, smooth, buff, and shine your nails. You can remove cuticles and calluses on both your hands and feet. Your skin will be left soft, just as if you were leaving the salon. This particular model comes in 10 speeds, so you can choose how you want to do your nails based on the time you have. It’s also battery-operated with touch control.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F4KCK5I/”]UTILYZE 10-in-1 Manicure & Pedicure Set, $59.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
3. Let your flyaways be gone.
Different than frizz, flyaways are pieces of hair that stem off of and “fly away” from your normal, healthy strands. Flyaways are either broken hair or new bits of hair growth that emerge after some damage has already been done—usually caused by overly dry hair or chemical damage. If you blow-dry your hair frequently on a high heat setting or put your hair in a bun or ponytail often, you could be causing excess damage—resulting in flyaways.
But don’t worry, you can suppress these little fliers to get smooth, healthy-looking hair in a matter of minutes. NEUMA Smoothing Crème tames flyaways with a glossy finish. It won’t weigh down your hair, either, or make it look greasy. The best part is you can use it on wet or dry hair. If you lather it on before you blow-dry, it offers a layer of protection to prevent further breakage.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/neuma-NeuStyling-Smoothing-Cream-250ml/dp/B00JOR3IQ8/”]NEUMA neuStyling Smoothing Crème, $22.11 from Amazon[/link-button]
4. Add a pop of color and personality.
Dressing up for a big presentation or a night out with the girls? Choose a neutral outfit, like a black top and jeans, but brighten it with a spark of color. The contrast immediately builds texture and variation, which makes your outfit more visually appealing without being overpowering.
You can add zest to your outfit with your shoes, jewelry, a scarf, jacket, or even your makeup. We love this Clutch Purse, which is available in 11 different colors. It’s large enough to fit everything you need and comfortably drapes over your shoulder. You’ll wow your crowd with this super-trendy burst of color.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D1GWFHD”]SUSU The Angelica Leather Clutch Purse, $49.95 from Amazon[/link-button]
5. Throw your hair into a quick, professional updo.
Whether you’re pressed for time or want a polished look for your day at the office, a smooth bun is an easy solution. The good thing is that buns never go out of style, and they keep your hair tucked back and out of your face for the entire day. But don’t just settle for throwing your hair back into a random mess. Look extra polished by using a French Twist Bun Maker. It comes in six colors so you can choose the one that matches your hair color best.
In only a matter of minutes, you can create a professional hairstyle—from crown and donut styles to sleek ponytails. The tool helps keep your hair in the same position all day, without damaging your strands.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/French-Shaper-Fashion-Accessories-Styling/dp/B07G31C2W3/”]French Twist Bun Maker, $10.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
6. Enhance your eyes.
You don’t have to spend oodles of time layering your eyes with 10 different products to achieve a stunning look. With the right eyeshadow palette, you can create dark smokey eyes or a lightly enhanced tone.
The Too Faced Natural Matte Palette, for example, offers a range of natural tones that compliment almost every skin color. Play around with different color combinations until you discover your go-to look that can be done in seconds.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Too-Faced-Natural-Matte-Palette/dp/B00VF33E7M/”]Too Faced Natural Matte Palette, $27.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
7. Head out with wrinkle-free clothes.
No time to iron? No time to fret. You can actually spray your wrinkly clothes and have them look freshly pressed in minutes. Downy Wrinkle Release Spray Plus makes your clothes look crisp. It also refreshes them with a subtle scent.
That’s right: You don’t have to set up the iron, wait for it to heat up, and spend the time ironing your clothes. That’s pretty much a modern day miracle—especially if you’re traveling and need to pull something out of a suitcase and wear it on the same day.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Downy-Wrinkle-Release-Eliminator-Refresher/dp/B00UFG6260/”]Downy Wrinkle Release Spray, $11.34 from Amazon[/link-button]
8. Add a statement piece.
You’ve heard about statement pieces, but maybe you’re not exactly sure what that means. In general, a statement piece is an item in your wardrobe that’s interesting and eye-catching. It’s usually the first thing someone notices when they see you. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the piece is vibrant and colorful…or massive. A well-executed statement piece is usually unique and matches the style of the person wearing it.
Plenty of accessories can serve as your statement piece—from a handbag to a piece of jewelry or pair of heels. The Kendra Scott Tassel Necklace is a prime example of a statement piece that adds personality to an outfit. You can layer it over a top or dress, making your outfit look trendy and unique all with just a simple touch.
[link-button href=”http://shopstyle.it/l/Repf”]Kendra Scott Pendant Tassel Necklace, $59.97 from Bloomingdale’s[/link-button]
9. Layer your look.
Build texture and variety into your outfit with several layers. Items like jackets, vests, and scarves make it easy to add contrast to an otherwise mundane look. You can even layer a skirt over leggings or tights or add a cross-body bag to your white shirt and jeans or pull a sweater on over a button-up shirt.
One of our favorite layering techniques is adding a simple, yet colorful scarf that enhances an outfit, like this 14th & Union Graceful Ginko Scarf. It can be worn in the spring, summer, or fall.
[link-button href=”http://shopstyle.it/l/ReqT”]14th & Union Graceful Ginko Scarf, $16.97 from Nordstrom Rack[/link-button]
10. Create beautiful beach waves in your hair.
Want to add body to your hair without a ton of work? Loose, wavy curls may be the way to go. You won’t need to spend an hour curling your hair, either. Yes, that’s right: Beach waves can be achieved in 10 minutes or less.
Using a curling wand like the Bed Head Curlipops Model, you can achieve the beach wave style with clean or second-day hair. Put all of your hair into a high ponytail. Select a one-inch section of your hair, wrap it around the curling wand, then release it. Continue loosely curling each one-inch section until you’ve covered it all. If you miss a piece, don’t worry. That’s all part of this loose, natural style. Once you release your ponytail, your curls will blend and flow together. Add a finishing touch with a flexible hold hairspray.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bed-Head-Curlipops-Curling-Loose/dp/B007ISRNJS/”]Bed Head Curlipops Curling Wand, $15.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
11. Make your eyelashes pop.
One of the first things people notice about us is our eyes. And we spend a lot of time looking at people’s eyes when we’re talking and interacting. In other words, it’s definitely worth investing in quality mascara that actually does what it’s supposed to. To boost your look with just a few strokes of mascara, be sure to use one that elongates your eyelashes and enhances your color tone. For example, if you have a lighter complexion with light hair, you may want to choose a brown mascara. For darker complexion and hair, opt for a black or very black shade. The idea is to make your eyelashes as vibrant as possible.
Choose a mascara that not only enhances your eyes but strengthens your eyelashes at the same time. The 3D Fiber Lash Mascara from TOULLGO offers big volume while delivering a dose of serum that makes them healthier, too.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Fiber-Lash-Mascara-Lashes-Hypoallergenic/dp/B007XGWQ2Y/”]3D Fiber Lash Mascara, $14.44 from Amazon[/link-button]
12. Mix and match prints.
Diversify your look by incorporating an assortment of prints and patterns. While it may seem counterintuitive to layer opposing patterns, it actually enhances each print’s different dimensions. It’s also a way to represent your personality or mood. Your patterns don’t have to be bright and wild, either. Neutral tones and simple lines can work just as well as bold prints.
New to prints and patterns? Start with something a bit more subtle, like this Hem Tunic Top from BaiShengGT. You can pair it with jeans or leggings and layer it with a patterned handbag or jacket.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/BAISHENGGT-Womens-Irregular-T-Shirt-Blouse/dp/B07BWB7FGS/”]BaiShengGT Women’s Mesh Irregular Hem Tunic Top, $20.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
13. Pull back your hair with a headband.
Unsure how to style your hair in a hurry? Want to add some color to your outfit? Throw on a comfy headband. Whether you’re running out on a shopping trip or meeting up with the girls for brunch, these Boho Style Headbands will make getting ready even easier. You can leave your hair down, tie it in a braid, or loop it back into a ponytail.
The spectrum of patterns and colors offers you plenty to choose from based on your style. You can even wear these headbands out for a jog or to the gym. They’ll keep your hair back while you break out a trendy sweat.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Women-Headband-Floal-Style-Criss/dp/B01FBWRT5U”]Boho Floral Style Criss Cross Hair Band, $9.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
14. Nourish your lips.
Whether you prefer a shiny or matte appearance, luscious lips are a vital component of a stylish look. A lip gloss that’s right for you will bring your entire face to life. That’s right: You don’t have to choose a vivid color or go super shiny. Opt for a flattering shade that makes your lips look healthy and smooth. We recommend Pure Cosmetics Natural Hydrating Lip Gloss because it provides color but also nourishes your lips with jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and vitamin E.
It also comes in 12 different shades—so pick the one that suits you best!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Cosmetics-Illumination-Natural-Hydrating/dp/B007THDTN2/”]Pure Cosmetics Natural Hydrating Lip Gloss, $17.95 from Amazon[/link-button]
15. Stock your closet with comfortable dresses.
What’s easier than throwing on a dress for a night out, a friend’s barbeque, or a day at the park? Not a whole lot. Having a few favorite dresses will make your weekend and evening wear as simple as 1, 2, 3. Choose styles that flatter you, and include a range of patterns (if that’s what you like), or keep it simple with solid-colored designs.
Most importantly, ensure that the fabric is comfy. Consider having a few dresses for the office, too—ones that are professional but don’t sacrifice on comfort. Check out this V-Neck Wrap Dress from Beyove to start your made-for-you dress collection.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Beyove-Women-Sleeve-Comfy-Dress/dp/B071GTNHG5/”]V-Neck Wrap Tie Maxi Dress from Beyove, $24.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
16. Stop the frizz.
No matter if you’ve got curly locks or pencil straight strands, smooth, silky hair looks more stylish than a dried, frizzy mess. Think you can’t achieve that look? Think again.
You can tame frazzled ends and unruly frizz to achieve the aesthetic of beautiful, smooth, salon-styled hair. Try a product like Revlon Uniq One All in One Hair Treatment to add shine and control frizz. It also helps to prevent split ends. The best part? It only takes a few seconds to rub into your hair after your shower.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Revlon-Uniq-One-Hair-Treatment/dp/B00GSWY2FS/”]Revlon Uniq One All in One Hair Treatment, $17.41 from Amazon[/link-button]
17. Say no to underwear lines.
Don’t spoil your look with your undergarments. Ensure you don’t have any obvious underwear lines when wearing a pair of pants, leggings, or even a tighter dress.
Invest in a few pairs of no-show underwear so you never have to worry about your backside again. Try a set of Seamless Bikini Underwear to see how you like the look.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/COSOMALL-Invisible-Seamless-Underwear-Coverage/dp/B0742XVM67″]COSOMALL Seamless Bikini Underwear, $23 from Amazon[/link-button]
18. Choose a complementary jewelry set.
Create some unity in your outfit with a single set of jewelry, such as a bracelet that matches your necklace. Your complete ensemble will be put together without requiring much time or thought.
Even something as simple as this Mariell Teardrop Necklace and Earrings Set can add class and cohesion to your outfit. Pair the jewelry with a simple dress or work top, and you’ve got a classy designer look.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Mariell-Shaped-Teardrop-Necklace-Earrings/dp/B01IFTDR98/”]Mariell Teardrop Necklace and Earrings Set, $25.99 from Amazon[/link-button]
19. Have a go-to pair of flats.
For a night out, a day in the office, or a morning shopping adventure, it’s important to have comfy, stylish shoes ready on a dime. Choose a pair that matches with nearly everything, like these black Ollio Faux Suede Comfort Ballet Flats.
You’ll always have something to slip on—and you won’t have to worry about your feet hurting. You can even take these on the dancefloor!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Ollio-Womens-Decorative-Comfort-ZY00F55/dp/B079ZN4HQT/”]Ollio Faux Suede Comfort Slip On Ballet Flats, $26.99 from Amazon[/link-button] Having the right items in your bathroom and closet will make your beauty and fashion routine easier than ever. You’ll have ready-to-go style that won’t require a lot of time, thought, or effort. Yes, we absolutely love style made easy!
The moment has come. You’ve traveled a long way to get here. This time five years ago you were fingering Cheeto dust at the bottom of the bag, trying to scrape out those last crumbs as you finished binge-watching reruns of Friends. (Alright, that was also you last weekend. Some things will never change, okay?) You were numbing your feelings with junk food and the wrong people, completely cut off from your own mind. You were at a job you hated, just trying to make it to the end of every day because sleep. You couldn’t remember when you’d last taken the time to look closely at your own body in the shower. Now, things are falling into place. You’re going to therapy and doing the internal work. You have a 401k and supportive coworkers. You’re brushing your teeth the recommended number of times a day and sleeping on a regular schedule and eating spinach most days. Crucially, you believe in your ability to live differently. One thing you have always thought would be fun to be—not as a necessity for value, but as the kind of cherry on top of a rich inner world, a fulfilling job, and healthy relationships—is A Polished Lady. You know at least one of these women already. They’re handy and scrappy and effortlessly pretty. They have an encyclopedic knowledge of life and beauty hacks. Their nails and their homes are always clean. They carry healthy snacks with them and can tell you exactly what to order at Starbucks that will keep you within your macronutrient goals for the day and they give great restaurant recommendations and their white shirts stay so, so white. They know how to sort laundry! “Effortlessly” is an illusion, of course. That is the trick! These women work incredibly hard. Either that or they have, over time, mastered a way of incorporating these routine investments in maintenance tasks (tasks that you’ve routinely ignored, because you like to spend as little time as possible in the shower, doing laundry, or staring at your own toes) so that they become effortless. Once you realize this, you can stop A) beating yourself up for being the lovable, beautiful slob that you are and B) telling yourself that you could never be like them even if you tried, so why bother? Now that you are meeting your most basic needs with regularity and are interested in this pursuit of polishedness, read on for 40 recommendations that may help you master the process.
1. Rub some dirt on your face.
Part of looking polished means keeping the largest organ of your body—your skin—healthy and clear. It’s interesting to think about who might’ve been the first human to say, “Let me rub this mud on my face and wait for half an hour while my pores get smaller.” We are glad someone did, though. Since our skin is of the oily, acne-prone variety, one of our skincare favorites is this Dead Sea mud mask, which is supposed to remove dead skin cells, improve acne scarring, stimulate circulation, and unclog pores.
Made from mineral Dead Sea mud, shea butter, and aloe vera, this mask should be used only once a week and left on for 10-15 minutes (though we have definitely left it on for upwards of an hour). The scent is hard to pin down, but the words “floral,” “earthy,” “magical,” and “forest” come to mind. Pure Body Naturals Dead Sea Mud Mask for Face and Body, $12.66 from Amazon
2. Peel off blemishes.
This resurfacing Korean beauty product uses green tea extracts to brighten skin and tighten pores. Centella extract is supposed to help heal wounds, fight wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity.
Beauty writer Rio Viera-Newton swears by Cosrx Pimple Patches, calling them “the Holy Grail.” We all know that you aren’t supposed to pick at your pimples or pop them, but if you do, these patches—which come in varying sizes to help you find the perfect fit—can do serious damage control.
All bodies manifest stress in different ways. Ours tells us is it is unhappy—because of too little sleep, not eating well, or PMS—by sprouting swollen, angry bumps that scar our delicate skin, making that fresh-faced, makeup-free look kind of an impossibility.
This cystic acne spot treatment uses bentonite clay to draw out impurities and calm irritated skin, making it the perfect balm for an inflamed face. It also employs pink grapefruit, lemon, spearmint, and peppermint, meaning it smells absolutely delicious. TreeActiv Cystic Acne Spot Treatment, $23.70 from Amazon
5. Acupressure your pressure away.
Speaking of stress, it’s best dealt with early. If at all possible, you want to manage your tension before it shows up in your body as a strange skin ailment. Enter the acupressure mat, a treatment you can administer to yourself whenever and wherever you need it. While the scientific literature suggests that acupuncture and acupressure benefits are only placebo effects, these can still be powerful—even equal to the positive effects offered by traditional treatments, according to Harvard Health—particularly in scenarios where your brain is controlling the symptoms, as with pain perception.
Even if you don’t reap the desired benefits, if you have a flexible spending account, you should be able to use it to buy your mat, tax-free, meaning it can’t hurt to give it a try, right? This mat and pillow set comes with a vinyl carry bag for storage and travel, and claims to relieve stress, back, neck, and sciatic pain. The reviews are glowing, with the product receiving a 4.4-star rating out of 5 from 2,593 consumers. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Guess the placebo effect is strong with this one. Nayoya Acupressure Mat and Pillow Set, $39.97 from Amazon
6. Blot your shine.
There’s nothing that can ruin a lovely face of makeup quite like looking as if you’ve dunked your face in oil. For those of you who have naturally dry skin, this sounds like a strange concept, but please believe us when we say that many of us confront the daily reality of makeup melting off our faces because of a naturally oilier disposition.
Another way to stay looking fresh is to protect your skin from UV rays. How? Get into the habit of wearing sunscreen every single day, rain or shine, summer or winter. Ideally you would do this with all parts of your exposed skin, but if you do it nowhere else, at least protect your face and neck.
Because the importance of sun protection cannot be overstated, we’re going to also recommend mechanically screening the sunlight with a big, luscious hat—one of those floppy, wide-brimmed numbers that make you look classy as all get-out.
In order to get the best shave, experts recommend choosing a razor with a soothing strip and more than one blade. If you’re going to invest, might as well hit two birds with one stone and go for this Schick Hydro Silk TrimStyle Moisturizing Razor for Women with Bikini Trimmer, so that you can address all your different shaving needs with one razor.
This comes with a built-in waterproof trimmer, an adjustable comb, five “curv-sensing” blades, and a soothing strip with hypoallergenic moisturizing serum. To soften the skin and make hair removal easier, be sure to let yourself warm up in the water for about 10 minutes before putting these blades to work. Schick Hydro Silk TrimStyle Moisturizing Razor, $8 from Amazon
10. Try a man’s razor.
For years we have been a devotee of the Schick Hydro Silk TrimStyle Moisturizing Razor for Women, so we feel pretty confident about this recommendation. But, let’s say you’ve been using that for a while and you’re looking to switch things up, perhaps to see if the grass is a little greener—and better trimmed—on the other, more masculine side of the fence.
If there is one issue we are more inclined to defer to men on, it’s shaving, since the hair they’re removing is literally all across their faces, and it’s coarse. Certainly they’ve had incentive to master the art of shaving coarse hair well. Plus, their products are usually cheaper. GQ recommends sticking to three or fewer blades, as the fourth or fifth blade’s pass over sensitive skin may be too much. Gillette Mach3 Men’s Razor, $7.05 from Amazon
11. Use a pre-shave oil.
This luxe pre-shave oil contains grapeseed oil, organic olive oil, sandalwood oil, meadowfoam oil, vitamin E, wheat germ oil, cranberry oil, red raspberry oil, rosemary extract, and neem oil. It is formulated especially “for men with tough beards, ingrown hairs and sensitive skin prone to razor burn.”
What is a woman’s underbrush if not a small beard? We’re taking a page from the men’s grooming book and buying some for our new shave routine as A Polished Lady. Best Pre-Shave Oil, Sandalwood, $12.97 from Amazon
12. Exfoliate down there to prevent ingrown hair.
To prevent irritation, stick to shaving your nether regions only once every third day, using a disinfected razor that is still sharp. (A razor is officially too old to use once you notice rusting, dulling, tugging of the hair, or nicking of the skin. To prolong your razor’s life, you can cut down your shaves to once or twice a week and store your razor in a dry place instead of in the shower, where it’s more likely to rust or accumulate bacteria.)
Before these shaves, you can exfoliate the skin with these colorful washcloths to prevent those painful bumps where your hair curls back into your body like a terrible magic trick. Unclog those pores before it’s too late! 8-Piece Asian Exfoliating Bath Washcloths, $5.19 from Amazon
13. Nix razor bumps.
In addition to choosing the right razor, letting your skin warm up, and exfoliating, you’ll want to use an after-shave solution to minimize irritation.
After splashing skin with cold water to close up pores and drying the skin, you can apply this solution—made up of organic coconut oil, unrefined African shea butter, vitamins A and E, jojoba oil, olive oil, and willow bark extract—to help with redness, ingrown hairs, and razor bumps. Shea Moisture Tea Tree After Shave & Bump Preventer Herbal Elixir, $8.79 from Amazon
14. Catch strays.
If you thought all you had to worry about was your bikini zone, well, maybe you are right! It is your body, wonderful however you choose to keep it. But, for many of us, feeling put together means making sure we have the means to get rid of some random stray hair, however unlikely a place it might pop up.
Sometimes there are hairs on our faces that catch us by surprise, and for this, we have precision trimmers. If your eyebrows, nose hairs, or delicate ladystache are giving you grief, mow ‘em down with a handy gadget like this one, which comes with multiple attachments to fit your needs. Philips Norelco Nose, Ear, and Eyebrow Hair Trimmer NT5175/49, $17.95 from Amazon
15. Wax on, wax off.
There comes a time in every lady’s life when she considers the pros and cons of waxing. For those of you unwilling to brave the salon (or spend all your money there), you may be interested in at-home options.
According to many, waxing is painful and not worth all the effort—but sometimes the promise of a few extra hairless-without-having-to-shave days is worth it, especially if you’ve got a vacation planned. This waxing kit includes four packs of hard wax (lavender and honey!), a professional-style variety that adheres to the hair instead of the skin. SKINOSM Hard Wax Warmer Kit, $28.99 from Amazon
16. Make your hair removal portable by always carrying a pair of tweezers.
Never know when you might need to pluck out a lone black hair that you only just now noticed in this particular lighting. Buy two—one for your purse, and one for home. Doubles as a weapon!
Now that we’ve covered the bases as far as body hair goes, let’s consider the hair on our heads. Flakes in the ’do will not do, so if you suffer from regular dandruff, make sure to have a few shampoos in your lineup to rotate between that make your hair feel luxurious and not sad.
Whether you suffer from stankfeet, calluses, toenail fungus, or athlete’s foot, regularly dunking your dogs in this tea tree oil foot soak should be your salvation, according to 3,352 reviewers who gave this product a 4.7-out-of-5-stars rating.
Before you begin a regimen of regular soaks, you may want to take on the task of watching your stompers molt like two desert lizards.
Truly, during the treatment, they will seem as exotic to you as two rainforest insects during metamorphosis. You will barely recognize your feet by the end, because, friend, they will be the feet of an infant human, as is promised by the brand name, Baby Foot. Lavender Scented Baby Foot Exfoliant Foot Peel, $15.99 from Amazon
21. File your feet.
If you want to be A Polished Lady while not also becoming A Broke Lady, you will want to invest in the kinds of items that you’d be treated to during a professional pedicure so that you don’t have to spend a big chunk o’ cash on them several times a month.
22. Choose a go-to nail color that’s clean and versatile.
Nude, white, and light pink are all good options for a nail color that will match almost anything while resembling the color of your actual nail or nail bed.
Even if you don’t have time to paint your nails, a little cuticle work and clear polish can go a long way. This stainless steel cuticle trimmer and cuticle pusher are easy to hold because of an ergonomic non-slip rubber-coated handle design. Experts recommend not cutting your cuticles because of the increased risk for nail damage and infection.
The point is this: Your cuticle is your last line of defense against bacteria entering the nail, and live skin should not be cut. Instead, use the cuticle pusher to push back the cuticle skin, only using the trimmer to nip away dead skin and hangnails. ECBASKET Cuticle Trimmer with Cuticle Pusher, $8.49 from Amazon
24. Or keep your cuticles completely intact and condition them.
If you don’t want to do anything at all to your cuticles and are more concerned with making your nails strong and healthy, you can still look polished by keeping your nails filed or trimmed and throwing on some cuticle oil with healing properties, like this option with lavender, lemon, and antifungal tea tree essential oils.
Your long, gorgeous, pristine nails will only stay that way until you eat lunch, or a chocolate donut, or dig into a bag of Cheetos. Then it’s gunk city.
One of the surest ways to look put together is to wear well-made clothing that fits you properly. Choose fabrics that are high quality rather than the kind of cheap threads that are designed to fall apart after a single wash. One of the easiest ways to test a material’s durability while you’re shopping is to take a handful of it and ball it up in your fist; if when you let go it stays crinkled rather than returning to its original shape, you should probably pass. Find a good tailor and cherish them.
Then, get a sewing kit for yourself so you can do the simple stuff—like replacing buttons or patching up holes—by yourself. Weecosy Sewing Kit, $9.99 from Amazon
27. Get a couple of travel makeup bags and fill them with the same items to keep in different places.
Once you’ve mastered a shorthand version of your makeup routine—something quick and dirty that you’d be able to do in a mirror the size of the palm of your hand in little more than five minutes—buy those items in sets of two or three so that you can make a few different mini makeup bags to travel with you anywhere.
One way you can cut down on the number of things you need to bring along in your travel makeup bag is by choosing multipurpose items, like a lip color that’s good for any occasion and that can be used as both a blush and a lip moisturizer.
This Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Medieval is a sheer red with moisturizing vitamin E, so it will offer a subtle lip color—modeled after the natural blush medieval women used to create on their lips by rubbing lemon on them—while preventing dryness. Smudge on the apples of your cheeks and you’ve got a quick blush! Lipstick Queen Lipstick, $18 from Amazon
29. Floss.
In addition to the makeup, throw in something mouth-freshening—like toothpaste or mouthwash—and floss.
Floss might seem like overkill, but imagine the number of times you’ve been stuck in public having eaten something seedy or gristly or pulpy, with no way to clean between your teeth. You’ll thank us later. Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Comfort Plus Dental Floss, $5.77 from Amazon
30. Smell good.
In addition to a perfume that you keep at home, you can stash away a small bit of smell-good scent to slap on after the gym or before you go out for after-work festivities.
Being A Polished Lady is a lot of work if you haven’t gathered that much yet. It means anticipating problems and already having the solution available. A common problem is STAINS, so another thing you’ll want to have around at all times is a travel-size stain remover since every stain is best dealt with early.
At home you can get to the specifics of how to best deal with the stain, but if you’re out you have to work with what you’ve got. (A quick warning: Don’t treat the stain with this stuff while the clothing is still on your body.) OxiClean Max Force Gel Stick, Pack of 2, $6.88 from Amazon
32. Fit what you need into one or two big purses that will match anything you wear.
As we have established, looking polished is all about planning—and packing. When you’re going out for a long day—one that starts with work and ends in a night out with no time to go home and freshen up in between—you’ll want to rely on a large purse.
33. Invest in a pair of earrings that won’t irritate your ears and that you can wear every day.
The point is to look put together but not to spend your life doing so. Hacks like choosing a pair of earrings that you don’t have to change out of every night can make things simpler for you. We love our tiny, endless hoop gold earrings because they are real gold, meaning they cause zero irritation, and they match with everything.
Pearly whites feeling lackluster? The color of your teeth can have a huge impact on your overall appearance of health. Many (74 percent of 17,128 customers, at least) swear by the whitening powers of stain-sucking charcoal, specifically this Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder.
The product is a natural alternative to peroxides, whitening teeth over time by removing marks from the big offenders like coffee, wine, and cigarettes. Be warned that you will look like your teeth are rotting out of your skull when you’re in the middle of this treatment. Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoal Powder, $19.99 from Amazon
35. Or whiten more traditionally.
If you’re a bit skeptical about rubbing something gritty on your teeth because you love your enamel VERY, VERY MUCH and don’t want to risk anything happening to it and are worried about the fact that dentists haven’t exactly given their seal of approval to the charcoal whitening method, you can always rely on the tried and true Crest Whitestrips.
36. Stop stuffing your workout clothes in your work bag.
Your sweaty, smelly sneakers do not belong right next to your expensive work laptop! Purchase a bag that’s intended specifically for the gym, like this sleek, breathable, and not-too-big option with a special compartment for shoes.
The days of lugging around your beat-up rolling suitcase from 2009 are over. No longer will you struggle to stuff your barely-meets-size-requirements suitcase into the overhead bin as annoyed passengers look on.
38. Buy a neutral-colored clutch as your backup purse.
While a big purse is a must-have for the woman on the go, she must also have something smaller to switch to when it’s not a good idea to lug around a giant bag, like at a club or party.
Carrying around a neutral-colored clutch inside your larger bag gives you the option of leaving your larger items at work or at a friend’s place and taking with you only what you need for the night out, without risking a huge mismatch. Humble Chic Vegan Leather Wristlet Wallet Clutch Bag, $19.89 from Amazon
39. Declutter your home and wardrobe.
Sometimes one of the most transformative things you can do is to simplify the space where you spend most of your time.
As you’re making all the external changes, don’t neglect what’s inside. Heather Havrilesky’s weekly advice column, Ask Polly, is one of our go-to reads when despair is high and inspiration is low.
Out of Office is a regular feature of brands we love—and we think you will too! Each of the brands we highlight must meet three criteria: 1) have a woman in charge; 2) create sustainably, responsibly, and thoughtfully; and 3) fit in with the lives we’re actually living. Read on to find out more about this week’s brand, the lady behind it all, and the advice she has for women everywhere.

It happens all the time. You walk into a store and it just doesn’t seem like anything is your style, so you leave empty-handed. And if your style or size doesn’t happen to fit into the neat little boxes of women’s fashion (as deemed by the glossies), you likely struggle even more. That’s exactly what happened in 2010 when Emma Mcilroy, co-founder and CEO of Wildfang, was on the hunt for a bold graphic tee. When nothing in the women’s department was working, she headed to the men’s section, where she found a great shirt with a suggestive pic of Kate Moss on it. She was in love! And then she realized it wouldn’t fit her. “Ems, why don’t they make this shit for us?” her friend implored. And Emma said, “Jules, why don’t we start a clothing company that allows women to wear whatever the hell they want?” And her friend said, “Yeah, maybe,” which was enough. So they decided to make that shit for them (them meaning all women). And they called it Wildfang.
Wildfang is German for “tomboy.” In an interview with Racked when Wildfang first started, Emma explained that for herself and co-founders Julia Parsley and Taralyn Thuot, tomboy “stands for a real fun-loving, cheeky, carefree, positive, bold girl that I think many of us aspire to be when we’re at our best,” and “sums up, loosely, that menswear-inspired vibe that we’re going after.” Wildfang wants to empower women by “smashing gender roles” through the clothing they sell. With the recent widespread resurgence of feminist sentiment the internet over, Wildfang has continued to ride the wave and do what they’ve always done: design cool shit for women. Wildfang makes their own clothing and also acts as a boutique for other badass brands. They’re inclusive in their sizing too, making sure that their stuff isn’t just for the slimmer figures of the world.
Their presence in the space has given them a political voice as well. Emma said in a Forbes article:“I never intended Wildfang to be political—but then I also never intended it to be political to be a woman.”Wildfang doesn’t just make statement tees and yell into an echo chamber; they also make tangible change by donating to causes they feel passionate about. They made major headlines when they produced the “I Really Care, Don’t U?” jacket in response to Melania Trump’s jacket fiasco. Rather than just criticize Melania’s (ridiculous) choice to wear her “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket while visiting detained immigrant children, Wildfang created their own spin as a t-shirt with the goal to raise $100,000 for RAICES, a non-profit that provides immigrants and refugees with legal aid and services. (In the end, they raised $250K.) In addition, Wildfang has donated $100,000 to save the last abortion clinic in South Dakota and $75,000 to Planned Parenthood, ACLU, and Tegan and Sara Foundation, among others. Proceeds from their “Wild Feminist” collection also give back to a different charity each month. That’s some serious coin going to those incredibly important causes.
Wildfang is about more than selling a style of clothing missing from the mainstream fashion market. They empower women with clothing to feel their best, most confident, most authentic self, and they use their pieces to make statements. As Emma said in one interview, “Fashion has been historically a very political way to express our views.” It’s clear that Wildfang takes that seriously.
HealthyWay’s Picks From Wildfang
Where to even begin? (Seriously, they have a ton of stuff and it’s all so frickin’ cool. So picking out my faves was a toughy.) I decided to limit myself to things just made by Wildfang, but they also sell pieces from brands like RVCA, Hips & Hair, and Bridge & Burn. I’m pretty reserved when it comes to fashion: I tend to dress in neutrals with clean lines and few patterns. And yet this shirt exists. The Ultimate WF Cat Button Up is truly incredible and I only lament that I didn’t find it sooner. And now I’m back to my regularly scheduled programming with this black on black Wild Feminist tee. I love how it’s subtle but still carries a strong message for those who choose to pay attention. That’s probably a metaphor for something. The Wild Feminist crop pants are too damn cool. I didn’t realize until I inspected closely that the grid print is actually made up of text that says “Wild Feminist” over and over. Brilliant! That’s a pattern I can get down with. You better believe that I’ll be outfitting my daughter in this kids tee. She’s all about girl power, so this is the perfect shirt for her to wear as she heads into first grade this fall. And finally, I had to include these Wild Feminist sparkle pens. (I’m a pen and planner addict.) When something as simple as a pen can share a message and it has sparkles, I am all over it.
Q+A With Emma Mcilroy
What’s your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start your company?
My best friend and I were shopping in the men’s department at a local clothing store—I was shopping for a bold, provocative graphic tee—which you never find in women’s section. Everything there is always floral and bohemian. My best friend wanted a cool blazer and found one she loved in the men’s department but it was way too big for her. That got us thinking—why are there certain styles you aren’t allowed to wear because of your gender? Why are women restricted from buying certain styles? So we decided to change that. We decided to start a company that allows women to express themselves however the hell they want.
Walk us through your typical work day.
There is no typical day! I’ll give you an example of how yesterday went—started at 8:30 a.m. with a four-hour offsite with my eCommerce team to do a SWOT analysis of our website and plan our web development roadmap for fall 2018. Immediately after that, I had an HR meeting with a staff member about promoting them into a new role. Next I did a quick interview for a radio station. I then met with our Amazon consultant to brainstorm ways to grow our Amazon business and set sales forecast for rest of 2018. My day in the office ended with a review of the creative direction for H1 2019—reviewing the key trends, colors, materials for the spring and summer seasons. I finally got an hour to do emails and grab food before I headed over to our Free Speech event at our store. I’m the host and the event is phenomenal. I got home around 10 p.m.
What’s up next for your company?
We’re actually getting ready to open an LA location this fall, are giving back TONS of money ($250K) to RAICES from our “I Really Care” collection in response to Melania Trump’s “I Really Don’t Care Jacket,” and getting ready to release some killer suits for fall.
We are also working really hard on our product right now to improve the fit and the quality but also expand the sizing range so more women can access it. Our new suiting goes up to size 20 and we’re psyched about how awesome it looks. The long-term goal is to be her favorite brand and make a huge impact on our community.
If you had to pick just one of your pieces as your favorite, which would it be and why?
It would be the Wild Feminist tee. That shirt always makes me feel bolder and braver. I wear it when I need a little confidence boost.
Five-Minute Mentor Session
What’s your best advice for our readers?
Surround yourself with only the best people who 100 percent share your vision. If you can build great teams with shared vision you will ALWAYS win. You need a #yeahmaybe crew.
What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?
By turning off my phone. Emails and social media create stress and distraction. When my phone is off, my mind clears.
Balance or harmony?
Balance.
How do you define wellness?
Wellness applies to body, mind, and emotional health. All three have to work together. When one is damaged they all suffer. Wellness is connected to balance and regeneration for me. I try to make room for both.
What book do you think all women need to read?
I don’t know if there’s one book, but The Untethered Soul really helped me. It’s all about letting go. I also loved Peace Pilgrim. Both changed my life.
Pick your fuel of choice: Coffee, tea, or something else?
Black tea, ideally an Assam
What’s your ideal day off of work?
Going to the Oregon Coast with my wife. I love the sea so much.
What was your first job?
I had two: working in my dad’s shop and also being a bartender at local social club.
What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company and how did you overcome it?
People. It’s always about motivating and identifying a team. I never settle for anything less than the best for a role. And I never settle for someone who is not a cultural fit. Get the people right and you get everything else right.
How do you stay motivated?
Our mission and our customers keep me motivated. They are why we get up every day and work hard.
Looking for an impulse buy that isn’t absolutely useless? Amazon’s “Most Wished For” section contains a ton of strange suggestions, some of which are better than others; we can appreciate the appeal of a well-made travel pillow, but we’re less enthralled with this narwhal-shaped toothpick dispenser. We decided to dig through the “Most Wished For” lists to find some little hidden gems and oddities. For the most part, we found what you’d expect—plenty of decent cosmetics and neat gadgets—but there were a few surprises.
1. Fight fungus and bacteria with pure tea tree essential oil.
Granted, if you’ve got especially bad fungus—you know who you are—you should see a doctor. If you’re suffering from a minor case of athlete’s foot, though, tea tree oil’s natural antifungal properties could help you get some relief.
Australian Pure Tea Tree Essential Oil is therapeutic-grade oil bottled in the USA and contains no added preservatives of any kind. Be careful; this is the real stuff, so don’t apply it haphazardly. Australian Pure Tea Tree Essential Oil, $16.95 from Amazon
2. Get rid of excessive sebum with this mineral powder.
It’s called “No-Sebum,” but really, we wouldn’t want to live in a world without any sebum.
Sebum, by the way, is the oil that your skin creates to trap bacteria and other contaminants. It’s useful stuff, but too much sebum can cause breakouts and oily-looking skin. This mineral powder helps you keep oil under control. It doesn’t dry out your skin, but the natural mineral and mint extracts soak up excess oil and sweat to leave you with a clearer-looking complexion. No-Sebum Mineral Powder, $8.83 from Amazon
3. Add some new (temporary) colors to your life with this easy-to-use hair chalk.
This “chalk” has more of a lipstick-like texture, but “hair lipstick” doesn’t sound nearly as cool. Apply, then set with a flat iron. The color stays in your hair for up to three days, and the twist-to-open tubes won’t leave you with messy hands.
Sometimes, the name says it all. These toe separators spread your toes apart, which can be therapeutic, apparently. An included “yoga massage ball” lets you gently massage your foot, improving circulation and relieving minor aches and pains.
This product’s Amazon description obviously had some translation issues, but according to the manufacturer, the toe spacer “will make you feel younger than ever.” We highly doubt that, but it will space your toes out in slightly different directions. Why not give it a shot? Toe Separators and Yoga Massage Ball, $15.95 from Amazon
5. Start saving those leftovers with these silicone stretch lids.
If you find yourself going through rolls of plastic wrap and aluminum foil, this set is a lifesaver. It contains eight silicone stretch lids in a variety of sizes; use them to cover bowls, pots, pans, and any other round dish.
They’re made from food-grade silicone (but don’t try to eat them), which is dishwasher safe, freezer safe, and free from BPA and phthalates. Silicone Stretch Lid Set, $13.99 from Amazon
6. Feel better about yourself with these (slightly sarcastic) affirmation cards.
Affirmation cards can be really helpful when you’re staring down a problem. Unfortunately, most sets are incredibly cheesy; reading something like, “remember, a widdle kitten lubs you” might work for some people, but it’s not for everyone.
These affirmation cards are funny, realistic, and actually really helpful. They’ll give you no-nonsense exercises for working on your mental health. Affirmators!, $12.71 from Amazon
7. Serve your favorite snacks with this adorable tidbit bowl.
Have you ever wanted to eat olives out of an elephant?
Well, someone did, apparently, because this thing exists. It’s a ceramic elephant that holds about one cup of your favorite snack. The hole in the trunk leads to a separate compartment that you can empty out via a bung on the bottom. Therefore, you could fill the elephant with olives, for instance, and put the pits into the trunk. It’s a cute conversation piece, ideal for entertaining, and while it’s not the type of thing that you’ll use every day, it’s a nice little trinket to have around. Makes a great gift. Ceramic Elephant Tidbit Bowl, $18.90 from Amazon
8. Make your own fresh quesadillas at home.
At some point, George Foreman looked at his manager and said, “I’ve got ideas for at least four distinct kitchen appliances.”
Okay, maybe that never happened, but even if Big George didn’t actually invent the George Foreman Quesadilla Maker, it’s still a knockout. Featuring the same fat-reducing technology as the George Foreman Grill, it presses and evenly cooks your quesadillas, giving you restaurant-quality results in minutes. Its six deep-dish pockets let you fill your quesadillas with your favorite veggies and proteins, and if you order it immediately, George Foreman might actually show up at your house, cook you dinner, and box four rounds with you. George Foreman Electric Quesadilla Maker, $23.99 from Amazon
9. Enjoy some deep relaxation with these aromatherapy oils.
These six fragrance oils arrive in a stylish gift box, and they’re everything you need for a deep dive into the world of aromatherapy. Scents include forest pine, ocean breeze, rain, fresh cut grass, sandalwood, and bamboo.
Don’t tell your local graffiti artist about these metallic markers (or do tell them, depending on your artistic philosophy). They write on pretty much anything, including wood, metal, glass, plastic, ceramics, and (duh) paper.
The bold colors make an immediate impression, and they dry within seconds. Oh, and the water-based ink is easily erasable—on second thought, you can definitely tell that graffiti artist to pick up a few of these. Arteza Metallic Glass Markers, $8.99 from Amazon
11. Achieve your goals with this best-selling self-help book.
We’re going to be brutally honest: This book is called The Untethered Soul, and its cover shows a horse running on a beach. Sure, you can’t judge a book by its cover, but most readers will know immediately whether this is for them.
With that said, The Untethered Soul has thousands of five-star reviews from Amazon users, and its psychology-based approach to personal wellness seems to be extraordinarily effective for some people. If you’re looking for a book that will inspire you to live your best life, this might be it. The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself, $11.36 from Amazon
12. Wake up feeling great with this light therapy alarm clock.
This futuristic-looking clock simulates the rising sun, so you’ll wake up feeling naturally refreshed. In fact, the Philips Wake-Up light is clinically proven to help you feel more energized from the start of your day.
A built-in speaker plays your choice of five calming wake-up sounds (or, if you’re having trouble getting out of bed, you can set it to turn on your favorite FM radio station). It also features a tap-to-snooze feature and a built-in backup that can withstand an eight-hour power outage. Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock, $97.95 from Amazon
13. Hold your phone or tablet exactly where you want it.
There are hundreds of smartphone holders on Amazon, but this one wins points for its simplicity. Its large base attaches easily to desks, bed frames, and tables, and the bendable arm lets you position your screen for optimal comfort. There’s even built-in access ports that let you charge your devices while you use them.
14. Control any outlet with these WiFi smart plugs.
This smart plug two-pack gives you complete control over your electrical devices and appliances. They’re voice-control compatible, so you can use Amazon’s free Alexa app (or the Echo or Echo Dot) to toggle lights, TVs, and bacon fryers on and off at will.
“Alexa, start my bacon,” you’ll say, and in minutes, you’ll hear the sizzling sound of frying pork. Okay, that might be a bit dangerous, but we’re sure that you’ll come up with some clever ways to use these handy little gadgets. WiFi Smart Plug, $15.99 from Amazon
15. Finally organize all of your stuff with this clever grid.
It’s billed as an “object retention system for gadget organization,” which might be a bit over the top; it’s basically just a fabric grid. That’d be like calling your pencil a “mechanically operated graphite distribution system.”
Still, Grid-It works extremely well, and it’s got solid reviews from Amazon users. The elastic bands can hold pens, notepads, wallets, chargers, cords, and pretty much anything else that you might want to store. Great for keeping in your desk (otherwise known as your “chair-equipped work performance enhancement station”). Grid-It Organizer, $10.99 from Amazon
16. Vent your frustrations with this not-safe-for-work coloring book.
This adult coloring book (and we’d like to stress that—this is not meant for kids) contains a bunch of swear words. Grab your colored pencils, sit down, and have yourself a nice therapeutic coloring session while thinking about that guy who cut you off on the way to work.
The illustrator didn’t phone this one in; each page features complex images with plenty of detail, and you’ll likely spend hours on each piece. Makes a great gift for anyone with a slightly subversive sense of humor. Swear Word Coloring Book, $4.99 from Amazon
17. Light any aspiring astronomer’s room with this 3D-printed moon lamp.
This 5.1-inch lamp cycles between three colors, providing a soft nightlight for kids (or adults, as the case may be).
This well-made light has an adjustable brightness setting and comes with supplies for hanging it from a ceiling. It’s almost like the real moon, except much, much, smaller, and made from 3D-printed materials instead of cheese. 3D Moon Lamp, $24.99 from Amazon
18. Tackle your wrinkly clothes with this travel-sized iron.
This miniature iron is about the size of your hand (assuming you’ve got relatively normal-sized hands), but it’s powerful enough to handle your toughest wrinkles. It features a one-touch steam control, three temperature settings, and a free travel bag. There’s even a measuring cup to fill the 1.4-ounce water tank.
The dual-voltage selector lets you choose appropriate voltage when traveling internationally. Really, this is a perfect compact iron—if you travel frequently, it’s well worth the $20 investment. Mini Travel Steam Iron, $20.39 from Amazon
19. Enjoy a nice foot massage, courtesy of science.
We could all use a nice foot massage every now and then. This affordable foot massager does the job adequately with 18 kneading nodes and six massage heads that relieve pain, improve circulation, and restore tired muscles.
It’s fairly lightweight, and with its low profile, it’s easy to tuck under your couch or chair. The heating function feels amazing on cold winter nights, and a 20-minute auto-shut off ensures that if you fall asleep while using it, you won’t wake up with over-massaged feet. Shiatsu Foot Massager, $59.99 from Amazon
20. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
This anti-aging cream contains a variety of high-quality natural ingredients including vitamin E, green tea, shea butter, and jojoba oil, which removes oily buildup while moisturizing and rejuvenating your skin. Designed for all skin types, it’s formulated to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, and sun damage.
It’s extremely well reviewed, and Amazon users claim that it provides quick results. It has a light fragrance, it’s non-greasy, and it doesn’t contain parabens. Retinol Cream Moisturizer, $19.99 from Amazon
21. Slice your salad like an absolute pro.
Ever look down at your salad and realize that you have the knife skills of a one-armed chimpanzee? The Salad Cutter is for you. Billed as “the last salad-cutting bowl you’ll ever need,” it makes it simple to chop peppers, tomatoes, and anything else you’d ever want to put into a big bowl of leafy greens, creating perfect cuts every time.
This travel-size lint roller twists to open and rids your clothes of fuzz, pet hair, dust, and other unsightly stuff. The retractable design ensures that you don’t waste a bunch of adhesive sheets, and you can tuck it into your purse or bag without creating a huge clump of random items.
It’s small enough to fit into your pocket, and several designs are available—granted, we doubt you’re really accessorizing with your lint roller, but it’s nice to have the option. The roller is reusable, and refill packs contain 30 easy-to-tear sheets. Retractable Lint Roller, $8.69 from Amazon
23. Take your love of mason jars to the next level.
Mason jars. Is there anything they can’t do?
This is a two-pack of soap dispenser lids designed to fit onto mason jars, and while the jars aren’t actually included, we’re sure that you’ve got a few sitting around from that time you thought you’d get into canning your own vegetables.
The kit comes with a cleaning brush and a few spare tubes. If necessary, you can cut the tubes to fit your jars, then enjoy washing your hands with soap from a mason jar just like Grandma used to do. Stainless Steel Mason Jar Soap Dispenser Lids, $12.98 from Amazon
24. Sew on the go like a pro.
You could spend hundreds of dollars on a state-of-the-art sewing machine, but that doesn’t make much sense if you only pull it out once per year to fix a $5 shirt. Instead, consider this portable unit, which can handle most simple jobs with ease.
It has a pedal switch and a push-button switch, and while it doesn’t offer the type of stitching options you’d get from a more expensive machine, it doesn’t have the enormous price tag, either. For about $30, you can hem to your heart’s content. Amado Portable Sewing Machine, $27.75 from Amazon
25. End your friendships with this ridiculously fun party game (for grown ups).
The Voting Game is pretty simple: Someone reveals a question from one of the cards, and players vote anonymously for the person who’s described by the question (for instance, “Who would win in a hot dog eating contest?”). The results are tallied and revealed, at which point players can guess who voted for them.
It makes a great icebreaker, although we’d advise exercising some care with questions like “Who pees in the pool every time?” or “Who clogs the toilet at their friend’s house and says nothing?” The Voting Game, $20.99 from Amazon
26. Look more like a turtle with this supportive travel pillow.
The Trtl Travel Pillow apparently gets its name from how it makes you look like a turtle. That’s a bold marketing decision.
Fortunately, the actual product is pretty great. It supports your neck, letting you rest comfortably on planes, in cars, and anywhere else where space is limited. The soft fleece doesn’t get too warm, and because the pillow weighs less than half a pound, it won’t add too much bulk to your travel bag. Trtl Travel Pillow, $29.99 from Amazon
27. Exfoliate your feet with this natural lava pumice stone.
Ready to get your pumice on? This exfoliating stone helps you remove calluses from your feet to get the soft, dainty extremities of your dreams.
Pumice stone is eco-friendly and has natural antibacterial properties, so it’s ideal for gentle exfoliation. This product has a suction hanging hook that creates a solid seal with most shower walls. It also comes with a cute cotton bag, so it makes a great gift for your favorite rough-soled person. Features a 100 percent money-back guarantee. Pumice Stone, $11.99 from Amazon
28. Apply your makeup on the go—and charge your phone at the same time—with this magnifying mirror.
Most compact mirrors are pretty underwhelming, but this one packs in plenty of premium functions at a great price. Our favorite feature: a 3000mAh polymer battery, capable of charging phones and other small electronics via the built-in USB port.
It has a normal mirror and 3X magnifying mirror, the latter of which is lit by a ring of LED lights. It comes with a color-matched carrying pouch, a micro-USB cable, and a user manual. Portable Light Up Travel Mirror, $20.99 from Amazon
29. Eliminate friction for pain-free feet and worry-free workouts.
This non-greasy balm creates an invisible barrier on your skin, limiting friction and stopping painful blisters from forming. It uses natural ingredients like beeswax to protect your feet, and it’s designed to be gentle on sensitive skin.
While this stuff isn’t magical, it’s effective for preventing irritation, provided that your shoes actually fit your feet in the first place. It’s a great pickup if you frequently wear heels or if you get blisters while jogging or biking. Solemates Anti Blister Balm, $12.99 from Amazon
30. Make sushi at home with this affordable kit.
Fold fish like a professional with Sushiquik. Dumb name aside, it’s a complete sushi set, perfect for making rolls of all sizes in minutes.
The kit includes a non-stick rice paddle, a training frame (which measures the perfect amount of rice for your rolls), and a roll cutter. The roll cutter’s end caps turn into soy sauce cups, and all components are dishwasher safe.
If you’ve ever wanted to experiment with your own sushi, but you were intimidated by the process, this is a great kit for you. It also makes an excellent gift. Be sure to pick up some nori sheets and sushi rice. Sushiquik Super Easy Sushi Making Kit, $24.95 from Amazon
31. Play a fast-paced word game that doesn’t actually involve bananas.
Bananagrams is an anagram game that’s like a frenzied version of Scrabble. Each player draws letter tiles from the bag—which is shaped like a banana, incidentally—and races to build anagrams in a crossword grid. The player who gets rid of their letters first shouts the word “peel,” at which point all players grab new tiles.
There’s no keeping score, and it’s addictive fun for players of all ages. It’s also a great way to build spelling and reading skills. Bananagrams, $10.49 from Amazon
32. Turn your patio into a romantically lit wonderland.
Why aren’t string lights more popular? Probably because they break easily and don’t provide much light—plus, they look out of place in a boardroom.
Well, this 300-LED curtain-string light set solves at least two of those problems. The UL-certified lights are safe, durable, and fairly bright, and an included control lets you choose between eight different twinkle settings. If the phrase “eight different twinkle settings” didn’t sell you on these, they’re probably not for you.
These make a great addition to a deck or patio, and they’re great accent lighting for weddings or other events. 300 LED Window Curtain, $15.99 from Amazon
33. Light the way during your late-night and early-morning runs.
If you walk or jog at night, you need to wear sufficient safety gear. These LED clip lights are a stylish way to make yourself visible to vehicles, and while they’re not a comprehensive solution—you should also have a decent reflective vest—they’re a good addition to your regular workout gear.
The lights clip onto the back of your shoes, creating a colorful glow without adding too much weight. The clips don’t require adhesives, and they’re functional for up to 100 hours. Plus, they make you look cool—that’s always a plus. LED Shoe Safety Clip Lights for Runners, $11.98 from Amazon
34. Get inspiration from these beautifully illustrated affirmation cards.
These are wholly unlike the cards from number six—and wholly unlike the cheesy ones we poked fun at. Written by Gabrielle Bernstein, author of the new-age self-help book The Universe Has Your Back, these 52 cards provide positive messages to help you tackle your challenges with complete confidence.
Bernstein’s philosophy is all about surrendering control and trusting in the will of the universe, but that doesn’t mean staying complacent; these cards promote mindfulness, confidence, and self-assertion in a way that resonates with readers. If you’re a fan of the book, the cards should help you put its teachings into practice. The Universe Has Your Back, $15.09 from Amazon
35. Finally squeeze your toothpaste the right way.
You’ve always wanted to be one of those civilized people who squeezes the toothpaste the right way, but for some reason, you’ve never been able to shake your squeeze-from-the-middle-of-the-tube habit. Fear not; science has your back.
This tube squeezer handles the arduous task for you. The gears push out every last bit of toothpaste, eventually saving you money. It’s also useful (in fact, arguably more useful) for squeezing paints, cosmetics, glues, and pretty much anything else that comes in a tube. Toothpaste Tube Squeezer, $7.99 from Amazon
36. Prepare for the worst with this book written by a former CIA officer.
Author Jason Hanson shares his experience as an agent of the CIA, but this isn’t a memoir; it’s a book filled with practical advice for handling dangerous situations. Hanson was a security specialist, and he provides simple, no-nonsense info about various safety and survival techniques, ensuring that you’re prepared to deal with carjackings, muggings, home invasions, and alien abductions (okay, we made the last one up).
He also offers tips for detecting lies, recognizing scams, and running basic counter surveillance. If you’re interested in real CIA tactics—or if you’re extremely paranoid—this is the book for you. Spy Secrets That Can Save Your Life, $7.68 from Amazon
37. Clean dirty makeup brushes in seconds with this electric cleaner.
This kit comes with everything you need to restore old makeup brushes to like-new condition. Attach your brush to the Wloomm, dunk it in some water, and activate the motor. It spins your brush, freeing up dirt, oil, and other contaminants. Remove from the water and spin again to air-dry.
This is basically an electric screwdriver for your makeup brushes, but for less than $15, it’s worth the money if you’ve got a sizable collection. The included adapters allow it to work with most standard-sized brushes. Electric Makeup Brush Cleaner, $13.99 from Amazon
38. Make your nails look like they’re covered in broken glass.
These foils let you create eye-catching nails in minutes. The mirror-effect surface appears to change color in different lights and angles for a unique look that’s perfect for parties and special events.
They come in large sheets, which you can cut and apply to your heart’s content. Apply a base coat and nail polish, then put small segments of the foil on your nail; apply a couple of top coats, and you’re ready to go. Reflective Mirror Nail Set, $6.99 from Amazon
39. Display your tea lights in these elegant Himalayan rock salt candle holders.
Designed for small tea lights, these candle holders are made from real Himalayan rock crystals. They’re great for meditation, although you don’t have to be especially spiritual to appreciate the naturally tranquil look of the orange rock salt.
Okay, we mocked this in the intro, but look at it. It’s a tiny porcelain narwhal that gives you toothpicks. If you love little knick-knacks, this is pretty much irresistible.
Granted, it’s completely impractical, and it only holds about 25 toothpicks, but it’s adorable enough to justify its paltry $13 asking price. Load in the toothpicks, shake it to dispense them, and you’ll be the envy of your next party. Narwhal Ceramic Toothpick Dispenser, $12.99 from Amazon
41. Get rid of dry air with this miniature cowboy hat humidifier.
Sure, it looks adorable, but it’s actually quite useful. Plug it into any USB slot, then drop the tube in a glass of purified water. The humidifier quickly goes to work, creating a relaxing space while limiting dry skin, congestion, and other issues caused by excessively dry air. You can even add a few drops of essential oil for an aromatherapy effect.
42. Experience natural relaxation with this affordable sound machine.
If you’re tired of hearing honking horns and your neighbor’s favorite Limp Bizkit songs, you’ll love this little speaker. With six natural sounds to choose from—rain, brook, ocean, thunder, white noise, and summer night—it lets you drift off, or get productive, by drowning out the background noise.
Granted, if you’re outdoors, you’ve probably got plenty of nature to listen to without this sound machine, but it can be battery powered if you need it on the go. A relaxing nap in a hammock while listening to the ocean, perhaps? Big Red Rooster Sound Machine, $19.99 from Amazon
43. Get perfect hair in minutes with this easy-to-use straightening brush.
This straightening brush features a temperature auto-lock, which prevents you from clumsily hitting a button and turning your hair into charcoal.
For best results, brush slowly, using a pulling motion for smooth, frizz-free hair. A hair protectant (we’re looking at you, coconut oil) will protect against excessive heating and help you get a natural shine. AsaVea Hair Straightening Brush, $39.40 from Amazon
44. Start gluing everything in your house together.
Need a glue that will work on pretty much anything? Sugru Glue is a moldable silicone adhesive that can stick to most materials, creating a temperature-resistant bond that’s both strong and flexible. It’s also electrically insulating, so if you want to glue up all of your electrical sockets, have at it (note: Please don’t actually do this).
This is a great pickup for DIY-ers, as it’s easy to work with and remarkably versatile. It’s available in multiple colors and especially useful for repairing headphones, frayed phone chargers, and other electronics that you can’t bring yourself to throw out. Sugru Moldable Glue, $19.99 from Amazon
45. Finally get the robot assistant of your dreams.
It’s no wonder that the Echo Dot is one of the most wished-for items on Amazon; it’s one of the company’s coolest products, and the certified refurbished model is remarkably affordable.
Connect it to speakers via the built-in headphone jack or Bluetooth, then start talking to your friendly household robot. Alexa can control smart lights, play music, take notes, bring up your favorite audiobooks, send and receive messages, tell you the weather, read the news, and plot your eventual destruction in the upcoming robot apocalypse.
Really, what can’t it do? Certified Refurbished Echo Dot, $29.99 from Amazon
46. Get an entire bamboo makeup brush set for less than $10.
These handmade cosmetic brushes have premium synthetic fibers, which provide the soft touch you need for an effortless application. The manufacturer claims that the fibers “will not shed as long as you own the brush,” although we imagine there’s some sort of limit to that—if you manage to live to 200, we’re guessing that a few of the bristles might start to loosen.
47. Become more successful with this cult classic self-help book.
Normally, we’re not huge fans of self-help books; to paraphrase the great George Carlin, if you’re helping yourself, you don’t need help.
With that said, The Obstacle Is the Way is a modern-day classic for good reason. Based in stoic philosophy, it presents a simplified process for tackling your problems and turning minor missteps into character-building successes.
Famous fans of the book include Arnold Schwarzenegger and LL Cool J. If you don’t want to be more like Arnold Schwarzenegger and LL Cool J, we don’t want to know you. The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials Into Triumph, $20.50 from Amazon
48. Turn your wallet into MacGyver.
We love multi-tools, but we always lose them. Plus, who wants to carry a big, bulky tool around on the off chance that they’ll need a can opener at some point in the future?
The Wallet Ninja, though, packs 18 useful tools into a tiny piece of heat-treated steel. You can literally tuck this thing in your wallet (hence the name), and you’ll find yourself reaching for it on a regular basis.
Need to open a box? Wallet Ninja. Need a screwdriver? Wallet Ninja. Cell phone stand? Ruler? Letter opener? You get the idea. Wallet Ninja Pocket Tool, $12.34 from Amazon
49. Laugh until you feel bad about yourself with this extremely offensive card game.
From the makers of the webcomic Cyanide & Happiness, Joking Hazard is an adult party game in which participants build their own comics. It contains 360 single-panel cards, which you can combine to create shock-humor masterpieces.
If it’s not already obvious, this is not a game for children. If you haven’t heard of Cyanide & Happiness, we’d suggest going to their site and reading through a few comics to make sure that you dig the creators’ warped sense of humor. That said, this is one of the most hilarious party games on Amazon, and it’s well worth the low price. Joking Hazard Game, $25.00 from Amazon
50. Track your adventures with this unique scratch-off world map.
The idea is simple but inspiring: When you’ve traveled somewhere, scratch it off the map. The scratched-off areas change color, leaving you with a clean visual representation of your worldliness. It includes a scratching tool, along with stickers for marking notable locations.
This is a bamboo cutting board in the shape of New York. We’re not exactly sure who thought of this idea—although we’re going to go out on a limb and guess that it’s a proud Empire State resident—but it’s certainly a conversation starter.
Granted, it’s not great as a cutting board, since liquids will simply run off the side (probably somewhere near Rockaway Beach), but it’s great for serving appetizers or desserts. We’d recommend loading it up with some New York cheesecake. New York State Bamboo Cutting Board, $19.99 from Amazon
52. Jam out with these comfortable headphones.
Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on Beats, spend less than $20 for these comfortable, chic headphones. They’re collapsible, so they’re ideal for traveling, and a built-in microphone allows for hands-free calling.
A single-cord design prevents tangling, and according to reviewers, the sound quality is pretty decent. Granted, you’re not going to get audiophile-level bass response, but for the price, these are exceptional. Ailihen Lightweight Foldable Headphones, $18.98 from Amazon
53. Hair in the shower drain? Never again.
Okay, so the TubShroom’s packaging includes this phrase: “TubShroom is Guaranteed to Catch Every Single Hair, Every Single Time You Take a Shower.”
That sold us. If you agree that pulling globs of wet hair out of the drain is an unacceptably gross act, you might want to check this out. The TubShroom slips into your drain and catches stray hairs in a long, perforated tube.
You still have to clean it every so often, but rather than reaching down into the muck, you can just pull up the TubShroom and throw its contents away. How did we ever live without it? TubShroom Drain Protector, $12.99 from Amazon
54. Get rid of bad breath, once and for all.
At some point in the last few years, people started brushing their teeth with charcoal. We tried it and hated it—the briquettes were way too big to fit in our mouths.
But this active-charcoal toothpaste doesn’t taste like a bag of Kingsford; made with activated carbon charcoal and herbal extracts, it leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean, and it effectively neutralizes the bacteria that cause bad breath. It tastes slightly bitter but with a hint of mint that won’t leave you feeling like you just frenched a Weber.
Seriously, this stuff works—just don’t try to cook with it. Twin Lotus Active Charcoal Toothpaste, $6.00 from Amazon
55. Enjoy a professional-level latte with this affordable milk frother.
This stainless-steel milk frother is remarkably easy to use, and if you’re a fan of lattes, cappuccinos, or other premium drinks with vaguely Italian names, frothing your own milk could save you hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.
56. Practice your knife cuts with complete confidence.
Everybody wants to dice an onion in a matter of seconds, but unless you’re Gordon Ramsay, you probably don’t have the chops to make those types of cuts without losing a few fingers in the process.
These cut-resistant gloves should help you build your skills while avoiding injury. They’re ideal for cooking, but don’t stop there—they’re sufficiently protective for woodworking and carpentry. Just be sure to pick up a separate pair for those tasks; nobody likes finding splinters in their French onion soup. NoCry Cut Resistant Gloves, $10.99 from Amazon
57. Exfoliate your skin with this tea tree oil scrub.
With tea tree and five other essential oils, this scrub moisturizes your skin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth. It’s also ideal for treating minor nail fungus and athlete’s foot since the tea tree oil has natural antifungal properties.
58. Stop slipping in the shower (and massage your feet in the process).
This tub mat features a massage-brush surface designed to improve circulation while gently massaging sore muscles. The product description notes that it’s “not suitable for tender feet,” so keep that in mind if you’ve got especially sensitive skin.
That said, this is a great dual-purpose mat that helps to make one of the most dangerous rooms in your home slightly less dangerous. Non Slip Massage Tub Mat, $12.89 from Amazon
59. Remove dirt and sweat with these convenient body wipes.
Ignore the fact that GoodWipes ripped off a Beyoncé line for their slogan (“GoodWipes in my bag, swag,” in case you’re wondering). They’re actually remarkably useful, as they let you easily remove dirt and oils in a matter of seconds when you don’t have access to a shower.
60. If you’ve ever had an ingrown hair, you know why you need these tweezers.
We’re not sure there’s anything worse than an ingrown hair. Not only are they painful, they’re disgustingly painful. They’re also hard to treat on your own…unless you have a pair of these tweezers on hand.
This stainless-steel tool from TweezerGuru terminates in super-sharp points. It’s ideal for the unpleasant task of digging out ingrown hairs, but it’s also great for splinters, eyebrows, and other precision-pulling tasks. If you’re prone to ingrown hairs, these are a medicine-cabinet must-have. Tweezers for Ingrown Hair, $9.90 from Amazon
61. Relieve lumbar pain with this top-selling cushion.
Made with long-lasting foam, the Original McKenzie lumbar roll features a built-in strap that allows it to be easily fastened to office chairs, plane seats, and anywhere else where you need a little bit of extra support. The removable cover is made with 100 percent polyester.
We’ve got a problem with lint rollers: They run out. We usually use the last sheet right before a date, big meeting, or other high-stakes obligation—exactly when we need to look our best.
Enter the Conair Fabric Defuzzer. It shaves off lint, fuzz, and pilling in seconds, leaving your clothes looking fantastic. The large shaving head lets it work quickly, and if you don’t want to lug around AA batteries, there’s a rechargeable option available. Conair Fabric Defuzzer, $11.99 from Amazon
63. Organize your work environment with this gorgeous lap desk.
Sure, they call them “laptops,” but if you put your computer on your lap, you’re sacrificing productivity (and the tops of your legs).
This chic bamboo desk fits most laptops, and it has slots for your smartphone and tablet. You’ll instantly feel more organized, and because it’s made with bamboo, it’s a lightweight, eco-friendly option. Makes a fantastic gift for your pal with the laptop-burned thighs. Bamboo Lap Desk, $26.97 from Amazon
64. Bathe luxuriously with these bamboo boar-bristle brushes.
If you’re not using a bath brush, you’re not getting the most out of the bath. And we think we’ve found our favorite bath brush.
Bath Blossom makes their brushes out of natural bamboo, with a double-sided business end that’s perfect for hard-to-reach places. One side features stiff, short bristles for exfoliation and stimulating the skin; the other has longer, softer bristles to remove dirt, oils, and pollutants.
Long story short: This brush has everything you need for a better bath. Bath Blossom Bamboo Body Brush, $15.95 from Amazon
65. Ride confidently through the night with the ultimate bike light.
Riding a bicycle at night without lights is like forgetting your helmet; it’s downright unsafe. Some lights don’t pack the lumens it takes to ensure full visibility, though. This triple-mode bike light from Flipcase is not one of the slackers.
It pumps out a full 250 lumens in three attention-grabbing modes: solid, flashing quickly, and flashing slowly. You can also set it to a full-powered or a low-intensity light.
And this thing includes a 120-decibel horn. How’s that for staying safe? Flipcase Rechargeable Bicycle Light, $9.99 from Amazon
66. Take control of your sleep cycles with an alarm clock that imitates the sun.
Human beings evolved to follow the sun’s cycles; up with the dawn, to bed with sunset. While our schedules have been hijacked by electric lighting, we can still simulate these natural signals to go to sleep and wake up naturally refreshed—just like our ancestors did.
All it takes is the Philips Wake-Up Light. It’s an alarm clock that uses light before it resorts to that unholy beeping to get you to work on time. Half an hour before your chosen waking time, the large, round light on this clock begins to increase slowly in brightness. By the time you should be hopping up to brush your teeth, it’s shining with full yellow light.
At nighttime, the light goes in the opposite direction, fading like the setting sun. This may be an electric light, but it’s the next best thing to a natural sleep pattern. Philips Wake-Up Light, $97.95 from Amazon
67. Don’t let mosquitoes ruin your summer.
It doesn’t matter how perfect your back-porch setup is—mosquitoes can make the place uninhabitable. Nothing seems to keep these little bloodsuckers at bay, at least not for long. The only option is to bring out the heaviest artillery.
In the war against ’skeeters, this device from 711TEK is the finisher. It imitates the signals that mosquitos follow for their meals (which are usually us). Instead of finding a nice, rich artery to tap into, though, the bugs that follow this siren song end up sucked into this machine, where they are slowly dehydrated until they’re not a threat to anyone.
War is cruel, but remember: The mosquitoes started it. UV LED Insect Killer, $49.99 from Amazon
68. Get your whole family excited about veggies again (or at all).
It’s hard to get a kid to eat zucchini, to say nothing about a beet. Meanwhile, we parents are watching our waistlines with raw, vegan, and paleo diets—right? That’s why the whole family will benefit from this 5-blade vegetable spiralizer from Veggiespize.
Choose your slice, throw in a veggie, and crank the handle for delicious, versatile meals. Make veggie spaghetti. Shoot, make veggie linguini if you want. Spiralize everything from squash to tomatoes. Your kids won’t even know they’re eating healthy, and you won’t get bored with a veggie-based diet. Makes sense to us. Veggiespize 5 Blade Spiralizer, $19.97 from Amazon
69. Find out who you really are, thanks to cutting-edge DNA testing.
Home DNA tests sound like something out of science fiction, but they’re here. That’s due in large part to the work of 23andMe, a premier provider of DNA testing to determine ancestry.
All you have to do is spit into a sample tube. Gross, yes, but totally worth it. Mail your saliva to the lab, and a few weeks later you can access online ancestry reports on everything from geographic region to how Neanderthal DNA makes you who you are. Pretty cool. 23andMe DNA Test, $69.00 from Amazon
70. You’re only seven days away from healthy skin with this face mask pack.
Every now and then, you need an intensive treatment to keep your facial skin nourished, hydrated, and blemish-free. The Ariul Natural 7-Days Mask pack fits the bill perfectly. It comes with seven masks and 15 cleansing tissues. Together, they provide a weeklong treatment that can work wonders for your complexion.
Each day’s mask features a different blend of natural ingredients to treat your skin systematically. You start with the peeling, sebum-controlling power of green tea. In later days, bamboo water provides a blast of hydration, tea tree cleanses the pores, and avocado provides rich nutrients. Then, finish your week with skin-brightening lemon essence. Ariul Natural Green Tea Sheet Mask Pack, $15.19 from Amazon
71. Pack more clothes for your next vacation.
Packing for vacation is a complex science. How do you fit the most possible clothes into the smallest possible suitcase? It turns out there’s a trick to solving this riddle: compression pouches.
Gonex Packing Cubes are rectangular compression pouches designed to fit in suitcases, backpacks, and bags. They squish your clothes down to size with a special compression zipper. Think of it as shrink-wrapping without all the weird machinery.
This is a set of three Packing Cubes, sized large, medium, and small. That should be plenty to keep you going on your next trip. Gonex Packing Cubes, $23.99 from Amazon
72. Keep your feet soft and callus-free without spending a fortune at the spa.
Nail salons were onto something when they started offering callus-filing services; once you’ve gone callus-free, there’s no going back. But soft feet can cost a pretty penny when you’re heading to the spa every week.
Now, you can get salon-quality skin without regular trips to your pedicurist. Try this Electric Callus remover from Own Harmony: It’s essentially an automatic pumice stone that gently sloughs away rough tissues, leaving your feet smooth, healthy, and beautiful. Electric Callus Remover, $25.97 from Amazon
73. Take the scent of comfort with you wherever you go.
Aromatherapy isn’t stuck in the home anymore. AromaAllure offers a portable diffuser that’s small enough for your car or desk. It’s even water-free to eliminate the chance of spillage.
Just put a few drops of your favorite essential oils on the internal absorbent pads. You can even blend oils to create a personalized aromatherapy blend. The diffuser fits in a jacket pocket, and three AAA batteries provide power for on-the-go serenity. Plug it in with a provided USB cable for battery-free power.
Don’t just visit your peaceful space; bring it with you. AromaAllure Essential Oil Diffuser, $19.99 from Amazon
74. Here’s a towel that will keep you dry without hogging luggage space.
Traditional towels can be a bit bulky for travel. That’s just poor foresight; after all, what’s a vacation without an ocean or lake—or a swimming pool, at least?
Luckily, the folks at Youphoria have a solution. This Quick-Dry Travel Towel is made of high-tech, ultra-absorbent microfiber. It absorbs a surprising volume of moisture, but it doesn’t take forever to dry; wring it out, and you’re basically there.
Best, of all, this towel rolls up tight, taking up the smallest space possible in your backpack or suitcase. It’s ideal for travel, which is probably why they call it a “Travel Towel.” Youphoria Outdoors Quick Dry Travel Towel, $9.99-$29.99 from Amazon
75. The sun is no match for these thermal-backed blackout curtains.
Maybe you work the night shift. Maybe you’ve got a killer home theater and you like to enjoy it on a Saturday afternoon. Or maybe you are actually a vampire.
We don’t judge. You need these curtains. Their special blackout fabric blocks up to 80 percent of the light the sun blasts through your windows. Meanwhile, a thermal-treated backing keeps heat from getting through to your inner sanctum.
These things even help to reduce outside noise. The sun never stood a chance. Moderate Blackout Thermal Backed Curtains, $23.12 from Amazon
76. Throw that hair-frying blowdryer away and still make it to work on time.
Heat treatments aren’t always great for hair, but who cares when you’ve only got 10 minutes to dry off and get out the door in the morning? What we need is a magical towel, one that slurps moisture out of our hair in a fraction of the time it takes to air-dry.
Well, we found the thing we need. It’s a DuraComfort microfiber hair towel, and boy, is it ever thirsty. The quick-drying action of this thing even helps to reduce frizz and static, and it won’t fry anything in the process. Get it. Super Absorbent Anti-Frizz Microfiber Hair Towel, $13.99 from Amazon
77. Don’t just wash your face—pamper your skin.
Soap alone will never keep the delicate skin of your face as healthy as it could be. The trick is to treat your skin, not just clean it. And we can’t think of any better way to fully treat skin than with this four-in-one electric cleansing brush.
Pop on the gentle nylon brush head for a deep everyday cleanse. Switch it out with an exfoliating head to remove dry and dead skin cells. If you’re having a sensitive-skin day, try the silicone brush head, the softest of them all. And when calluses rear their ugly heads, a pumice stone attachment makes short work of them. Waterproof Facial Cleansing Brush, $18.99 from Amazon
78. Get your Zs when and where you need them.
It’s hardest to get to sleep when you need rest the most. Maybe you’re on an overnight flight, or maybe you just desperately need a mid-afternoon nap. One thing that’s not helping? All that light streaming in.
Jersey Slumber offers a simple but elegant solution with their silk sleep mask; we won’t be caught on a plane or a bus without it. This mask completely blocks out the light while feeling virtually nonexistent on your skin. An adjustable head strap makes this a true one-size-fits-all item. Jersey Slumber 100% Silk Sleep Mask, $8.89 from Amazon

Of all the origin stories a shoe company could have, a trip to a Guatemalan slum seems an unlikely one. But after Bethany Tran visited a friend working for Lemonade International in Guatemala City, she was moved to make a difference, putting the wheels of The Root Collective in motion.
Lemonade International is a non-profit focused on La Limonada, an asentamiento, or slum, of Guatemala City. Like many slums around the world, La Limonada, which is the largest slum in Central America, experiences poverty and gang violence the likes of which most people in the U.S. can’t imagine. Bethany, who had met some of La Limonada’s 60,000 to 100,000 residents, felt a connection to those people—and knew she had to try to help. It was on one of these visits that Bethany met a shoemaker named Otto Aceituno. As is common in places of extreme poverty, gang violence is rife in La Limonada, and many residents are either in gangs or their lives are affected by them. By the time Bethany had met Otto, though, he was out of gang life and working as a cobbler at his own shop, Calzado Limonada. Otto, who learned the art of shoemaking when he was 10, employs former gang members, including his son, in his shop.
Bethany and Otto went into partnership together and formed The Root Collective to sell handmade shoes. Bethany creates the designs for the shoes, Guatemalan women weave the textiles by hand, and Otto and his team produce each pair—also by hand. The Root Collective, which launched in November 2013, initially offered a variety of accessories and shoes, but in the years since has narrowed the focus to high-quality shoes hand made by Guatemalan artisans. Now, The Root Collective works with Otto’s shop plus two others—one is a bootmaker who makes all of their boots. The fabric for the shoes is still woven by hand in two weaving cooperatives run by Guatemalan women. Bethany, who lives with her husband in North Carolina, worked full-time at a Fortune 500 company while developing The Root Collective. Now, in addition to her work with The Root Collective, she works at her own company, Broadview, consulting on brand strategy and marketing. She’s got her hands full, which makes her work with her Central American business partners all the more inspiring. (If she can do it, why can’t we?) When you buy shoes from The Root Collective, your money is going to help La Limonada residents like Otto and his team. And while there’s no easy answer to the poverty endemic in asentamientos like La Limonada, purchasing thoughtfully is a really great start.
HealthyWay’s Picks From The Root Collective
Each month, The Root Collective highlights a Pair of the Month they’re particularly feeling. In August, that pair is the Gaby in Scarlet—and it’s 25 percent off the entire month! The Gaby is their current flats focus; we especially love it in Mustard and Embroidered Floral.
Boots more your thing? The Lee boot in Noir is made of handwoven cotton and genuine leather, and reviews are effusive to say the least. Their best-selling boot, the Espe, is particularly fresh in Midnight, a luxe brown color made of soft but durable leather.
When you buy a pair of shoes from The Root Collective, join the community of Otto fans the world over by posting a picture on Instagram with the hashtag #ottomademyshoes.

Q+A With Bethany Tran
What’s your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start your company?
The Root Collective started with a problem. It was a problem that wasn’t being solved, and I couldn’t understand why. A friend of mine moved to Guatemala to be the on-the-ground person for a non-profit she had helped start. They were focused on bringing education and support to a single slum community called La Limonada in Guatemala City. It was amazing work. I went to visit shortly after she moved in 2009. But I realized quickly that only half the problem was being addressed. You could educate a kid, but if there was no job for them after they graduated, nothing will have changed. That cycle of poverty would continue without jobs to allow people to lift themselves up.
These kids came from struggling families. If there’s one thing I’m certain of, it’s that strong families build strong communities. And strong communities build a strong world. That’s the kind of world that I wanted to live in. These families needed jobs. I kept waiting for someone to do something about it, but no one did. I knew nothing about starting a business like this. I had a background in marketing, not international development, or product development, or even business administration. I needed to know about seven million things to do this well, and I knew about five of them. I decided to do it anyway. In 2013, The Root Collective launched. In that time, thousands of women have become part of creating a stronger world with their purchases. Every single pair of shoes fuels those jobs, and every single woman who wears them is changing the world for the better because of it.
My “why” has morphed through my time from conception until now. It started completely focused on job creation and has now grown to include empowering women to understand how much power they have to create change in the world simply by how they spend their money. Women control 85 percent of household budgets, which means they control a large portion of the global economy. That’s crazy, right?! What’s so incredible about it is that women are so uniquely positioned to lead the charge to make our world better. Money talks, and how that money is spent, what companies it’s spent with, and what women are demanding as consumers—that’s huge.
Walk us through your typical workday.
Oh goodness, it doesn’t exist! My days can vary from working on future designs, problem solving production issues in Guatemala, doing Facebook Live chats with other women boss babes, packing orders (yes, CEOs get to do the everyday standard work sometimes too!), updating our website, or doing interviews like this. Every single day is different, which is part of what I love about my job. I thrive off change.
What’s up next for your company?
We are currently working on expanding our product offering. We are in the design and sampling phase for Summer 2019 right now, and I’m super excited for what we’re hoping to be able to do.
If you had to pick just one of your products as your favorite, which would it be and why?
This is a trick question, right? If I had to pick JUST one to wear for the rest of my life, it would be the Espe in Slate bootie. This was one of our original boots and is still one of our best sellers. I love the color combination of the luscious chestnut colored leather with the tan and gray handwoven fabric. Plus, they’re so comfortable. They are one of my on-my-feet-all-day, walking-around-the-city shoes.
Five-Minute Mentor
What’s your best advice for our readers?
Be brave. Be curious. Be persistent. The best things in life are hard, but so worth it.
What was your lightbulb moment, where all the hard work felt totally worth it?
When I started seeing other women be inspired by what I was doing. I don’t say that to sound conceited (I realize it does!), but I get so excited seeing women be brave and do the things that get them excited, when they realize that they are capable. I say all the time that if I can do this, so can you. I didn’t have any kind of leg up starting this business. I had zero clue what I was doing, had no connections, no background in fashion or product development. So truly, if I can do this, you are more than capable of doing what it is that makes your heart flutter.
What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?
Reading by some kind of body of water! The beach, the pool, a lake…water relaxes me so much, and I love getting lost in a story. A good massage doesn’t hurt either.
Balance or harmony?
I’ve never heard it put that way, but harmony 100 percent. Balance does feel like a myth most days.
How do you define wellness?
The perfect combination of emotional, physical, and spiritual health. I think if you can manage some semblance of those things, you’ll find joy, even when life is hard. It’s easy to focus on physical well-being, but I’m learning more and more how emotional and spiritual health are key to a fulfilled life.
What book do you think all women need to read?
When Breath Becomes Air. It’s a memoir written by a brilliant neurosurgeon while he was dying from a brain tumor. I realize it sounds super depressing, but it’s a book about really living. In my top three favorite books of all time (even if I did read it on a beach trip and bawled my eyes out sitting in the sand).
Pick your fuel of choice: coffee, tea, or something else?
Okay, this is weird, but coffee, even though I only drink like quarter caff. I backed off caffeine a few years ago, but I still love the habit of drinking my coffee in the morning.
What’s your ideal day off of work?
Beach trip with my husband and a book
What was your first job?
I was a dance teacher for 10 years. I started teaching the summer I turned 16. Kind of crazy for a first job, but I loved it so much and still miss it.
What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company?
Just one? Goodness. Our biggest obstacle is still manufacturing. We are working with small batch makers, most of whom had generational training. Which means they were taught by their parents and grandparents. I love that so much, but it’s posed significant challenges. Since there was no formal training, they tend to do things how they do things, and that’s not always the best way. I had zero background in making shoes (and shoes are by far the most complicated thing you wear). I’ve had to learn as I go so I could help solve problems as they came up in our manufacturing. It’s still a struggle, but we’re all learning every day how to improve.
How do you stay motivated?
Frankly, I want my life to matter. On the days when it feels impossible, I remember that. I want to leave the world a better place than how I found it. Not to get all YOLO, but it’s true. I want to go to my grave knowing that I loved my family well, that I served other people, and that I was able to inspire others to do the same. Is there anything else to life?
Summer is well underway, and if picking your daily wardrobe is still making you sweat, we’re here to help. We asked top boutique owners and design experts to shed some insight on the latest summer fashion trends for 2018. Bonus: Each product selected supports ethical or sustainable fashion in some way. It’s great to look good and feel good, but owning a wardrobe that gives back to society in some way takes it an extra step.
“There is a new consumer who is caring and educated and chooses what she puts in her body, and she chooses what she’s wearing. Excess consumerism doesn’t resonate with her. She looks for the right pieces, quality pieces. The root of all of this is education and getting the information out there to learn what impacts all of us,” says Nancy Taylor, CEO and co-founder of eco-chic brand époque évolution. They choose sustainable, organic, upcycled, deadstock, and post-consumer-waste recycled fibers when available and work with mills that are committed to best practices and reducing the collective carbon footprint. Ready to up your summer wardrobe game? Here are some of the latest summer fashion trends for 2018, plus how you can choose to incorporate them ethically into your wardrobe.
Luxe, Versatile Leisure
Function ranks high this summer. We’re leading incredibly busy, full, and productive lives. In one day, women can go from the office to the gym to a night out, and we want to be comfortable the entire time. Right now there is a major need for pieces that can transfer easily from event to event. époque’s Flux Top is an essential layering piece. It has a full shelf bra for support during a workout but is also versatile for layering under work shirts. Or you can pair it with a high-waisted pencil skirt to transition it to a going-out top. In addition to that, it’s made of quick-dry material, so it can even be used for swimming. “Every summer, at the end of the day, you just want something that is easy to wear, with lots of movement that is really lightweight and comfortable, as well,” says Jenn Krouse, brand CEO at Resonance Companies. Resonance Companies’ vision is about sustainable fashion, including manufacturing and marketing in the most sustainable manner possible. From design to raw material to production to sale, they work to keep their impact on the environment as low as possible. The Trench Dress from Tucker NYC, one of Resonance Companies’ brands, combines the style of a trench with the length of a maxi. It’s super lightweight and fitted in the top for a clean silhouette. “You’re living outdoors, you’re traveling, you want something that is easy to toss on and go about your day,” says Nicole Zabal, founder and designer of NICOLE ALEX. Consider the Harlow T-shirt or Chloe Dress, both made with built-in shelf bras. All of NICOLE ALEX’s apparel comes with built-in shelf bras and can be effortlessly integrated into a summer wardrobe. The tops work well with yoga pants, shorts, or skirts. And the dresses are an entire outfit in themselves, with sneakers or sandals by day or wedges for the evening. In keeping with the comfort movement, a sub-trend in fashion is the throwback to the ’90s. Wearing basics, like t-shirts and denim, allows women to amp up the accessories and show off their personality. “Summer 2018 fashion has a very ’90s feel,” says Beau Dunn, founder of Beaus Babes. “People are wearing what they want and what makes them feel good.” Consider denim shorts and a white tee, paired with an “it” bag, for example, like this Haskins Nude Purse, made with vegan leather. “Athleisure and streetwear are playing a major role in runway fashion so now is your time,” says Sola Desgagne, marketing director for Obakki Foundation. Obakki is one of Canada’s most sustainable brands, with an emphasis on philanthropy. Pair Obakki’s Bidi Bidi Scarf with your favorite striped shirt or yoga pants to turn an athletic outfit into something more chic. [products ids=’1006323,1006345,1006373′ type=full]

Maker Movement
“This summer, the ‘maker movement’ will continue to bring human-scale production back into mainstream fashion,” says Laura Hertz, co-founder and CEO of Gifts for Good. Gifts for Good is a marketplace for products made by cause-based enterprises. Their gifts work to expand the reach and impact of more than 40 nonprofits and social enterprises in 19 states and 65 countries. With that, a growing number of products will now be hand-signed by the person who made them or accompanied by a photo or personal story of the maker. This Signature Cecilia Leather Tote Bag provides 13 days of schooling for a child in Honduras. It is the perfect everyday bag that you can dress up or down. It’s large enough to carry a laptop by day for a professional look but also casual enough for a friendly lunch. At night, combine it with heels and it works just as well as a lovely dinner accessory. “Companies like Ten Thousand Villages have risen to the complex challenge of creating handmade, fair trade, ethically sourced products from artisans around the world for decades,” says Hertz. “However, since Fashion Revolution Week began five years ago, consumers have begun demanding change at a rapid rate against mass-manufactured goods for a more transparent and ethical fashion industry. A new generation of consumers are using their voice to ask ‘Who made my clothes?’ They want superior, timeless, quality products that will last.” These handmade Honey Bee Earrings, for example, embrace the summer trend for nature-inspired jewelry. They are made by Mitra Bali, a collective of artisan groups in Indonesia. [products ids=’1006393,1006396′ type=full]
Natural Neutrals
Lightweight, natural fabrics that wear well and keep you cool are another trend for the summer. For example, NICOLE ALEX’s summer line is using bamboo–cotton blends. NICOLE ALEX garments are made with OEKO-TEX Standard IOO bamboo–cotton fabrics. Bamboo is an eco-friendly plant, as it thrives naturally without any pesticides or fertilizers and requires little irrigation, apart from rainwater. It is also harvested via cutting, not uprooting, and has a quick regeneration cycle. Pivotte’s Venture Pants are breathable and machine washable with a smooth handfeel and are available now in two new ready-for-summer colors. They can be worn easily in the office with heels or out on the town in flats or wedges. Pivotte enforces the idea of conscious consumption by encouraging shoppers to question the value of a product—how was it made? By whom? Do you need this piece or do you just sort of want it?
[products ids=’1006401,1006399′ type=full]
Jumpsuits
Jumpsuits are all the rage this summer. These light, airy, breathable pieces are an entire outfit all in one, keeping decision-making to a minimum.
Look at these options from People Tree. For more than 25 years, People Tree has partnered with fair trade producers, garment workers, artisans, and farmers in the developing world to produce ethical and eco-friendly fashion collections. Pair this jumpsuit with flats for a casual look, or add heels, a simple necklace, or earrings to dress it up for an evening. This one works exceptionally well with wedges and can transition throughout the day easily. You can also find elegant jumpsuits for more formal occasions, like the Scoop Back Jumpsuitfrom Tucker NYC. [products ids=’1006403,1006405,1006411′ type=full]
Comfortable (Cruelty-Free) Summer Shoes
As reported by Footwear News, resale site thredUP’s data showed that from December 2017 to May 2018, shoppers added more sneakers and flat footwear to their carts than usual. While we love a good pair of heels, on days when it’s too hot to think, we can’t deny the allure of some comfy flats. Consider these versatile sandals by Wiivv. The standard strap options come in purple, navy, or black, and they’re waterproof and durable so they can be worn at the beach, water parks, camping, or on a trek through Thailand. The look can be dressed up by swapping the straps for the brown leather option. Cruelty-free footwear is on the rise this summer, too, as people are making more educated choices about the brands that they support. “We want to be good stewards of the world we live in. By choosing to transition to a sustainable wardrobe, you can be a benefit to our planet and feel like you’re making a difference when you pick out an outfit in the morning,” says Meredith Jolly of Lulus. Slides, like these cutout slide sandals, are in. These are the perfect slip-on sandal for a summer dress, to wear to the beach, or out and about for the day. They are comfortable, classic, and can be worn with pants, dresses, skirts, or shorts. Finally, the low block heel trend, which represents the perfect day shoe, continues this summer. One of our favorites? These Tulum Trek Tan Heeled Sandals. [products ids=’1006414,1006495,1006498′ type=full]
Organic Fabrics
Traditional summer fabrics like cotton and linen are getting an eco-friendly upgrade from brands like Reformation, which aims to reduce waste with fabrics made from sustainable materials and repurposed vintage clothing. A vintage-inspired linen dress can easily be paired with sneakers for a casual look or dressed up with heels and subtle jewelry for a nice dinner out. époque évolution is a big fan of natural fibers and wool. Wool can be worn multiple times without having to wash it. Their Evolve dress, for example, is the perfect travel piece as it can be worn a few times without showing wear and tear. [products ids=’1006417,1006423′ type=full] Each piece listed here was created with an ethical or sustainable edge—and each one is timeless and can be built upon in any season or made to suit almost any style. They are the perfect must-have pieces in building a wardrobe that suits the many different hats a woman wears each day.

Lali Kids was a natural choice for our first Out of Office feature. HealthyWay is a St. Louis-based company, so we’re always excited to shout out brands from our hometown! Lali Kids, which was founded in St. Louis in 2013, is a fresh, sustainable clothing brand for girls 6 months through 12 years old. The company is named after a nickname founder Kinnari McDevitt’s grandmother used to call her: Lali, which means “little darling” in Hindi. Now, McDevitt focuses on creating playful clothing for little darlings everywhere, with silhouettes and prints inspired by her childhood in India.
McDevitt, a former engineer and a self-described obsessive of artisan textiles, is the brand’s chief designer: She hand-draws each print herself! Occasionally, she’ll find artisan textiles, like hand-woven jacquards, in markets in India that they can use as well; she says, “It’s all about layering different textures and colors to tell a story.” The prints are then set by a print designer and screen-printed by hand, leading to playful imperfections and unique details in every piece. The workers in their primary factory in India are mothers whose work with Lali allows them to earn a fair, living wage and spend time with their families—Lali is an example of clothing that’s good for everyone involved. On this side of the world, McDevitt and her team of just three employees are responsible for design, prototyping, shipment, and marketing in their St. Louis studio. The brand, which launched their first collection in 2015, has come a long way in just a few short years. You can now buy Lali clothing at more than 60 retailers in six countries, including Anthropologie(!), and they’re working on their AW 2018 collection, which will include their first little boys’ line. Lali perfectly combines one-of-a-kind fabrics, fresh Americana style, and fun pops of color reminiscent of saris in Indian markets in dozens of pieces you’ll feel good putting your little darling in.

Q+A with Kinnari McDevitt
What’s your why behind the brand? What inspired you to start Lali Kids?
I worked as an engineer for a big corporation and felt miserably uninspired with the routine and structure of it. I had an undying thirst for creativity that was not being quenched. My childhood was spent in India, where the textiles and artisan crafts are like none other, and right around the time I got married, my husband and I made the trip back to that gorgeous country. That’s when it all clicked. I felt that there was a gap in the children’s market for clothing made of unique artisan textiles. I didn’t even have kids at this point, but I wanted to bring the beauty of my own childhood into the U.S. market. And, you know, be my own boss.
Walk us through your typical workday.
Our work days vary a lot depending on where we are with a collection. Most days, I wake up with my 2-year-old son’s happy chatter as my husband is getting ready to leave for work. I have my morning chai and get the little guy ready for school. Alex, my design editor (and best friend), drops him off while I start calling our manufacturers in India. I deal with our supply chain, design, and production, and she takes care of shipments, prototyping, and a bit of everything else! One minute we’re planning a color palette, the next we’re greeting the FedEx driver and reviewing samples from India.
Lunchtime is very important to us, and I am usually the chef for all of our meals. After the break, I go pick up my son from school and while he takes his afternoon nap, Alex and I try to get more work done. We wrap up our day around dinner time, my son goes to bed, and I head back into the studio. Working in the quiet of the night is really productive and relaxing for me. I feel like I can focus more and get design work done efficiently. I try to make it to bed before midnight, but if inspiration strikes, sleep is secondary.
What’s up next for Lali?
Oh gosh…I have lots of ideas on what we want to do next. We have started to do some production in the U.S. and would really love to have a big studio space which could accommodate that. I would love to create an artisan studio where creative people can come and work—not just us, but a variety of women. We would someday love to launch a women’s clothing line. After a few visits to the splash park this summer, I’ve got inklings of developing a swim line as well. I want to do all these things tomorrow, but they will all happen in their own time.
If you had to pick just one of your products as your favorite, which would it be and why?
Our Midi Dress style, hands down. This silhouette was based on one of my own dresses that I had made custom made on a trip to India—and then had it scaled down for little girls. Long flowing dresses are what I’m all about. We’ve carried this design through several summer collections now, and it’s always a customer favorite. It’s just so comfortable and playful.
Five-Minute Mentor
What’s your best advice for our readers?
If you have a dream to create something, just get started. Take the first step and don’t worry about the big picture. I never in a million years thought I would own a fashion business. I think when you are reaching out into the world with a lot of passion in your heart, the universe conspires to help you make it into a reality. Also, if you don’t ask, the answer will always be no. If you don’t take a step forward, you will be in the same place. So take the leap.
What was your lightbulb moment, where all the hard work felt totally worth it?
I try to remind myself daily that starting this company is a journey and where we are today is not where we were a few days, months, or years ago. However, when Anthropologie contacted us and started carrying our products, it was a really big validation that we had something unique to offer.
What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?
Ha! Lots of sleep. My goal this summer was to wear clothing that’s artisan made instead of fast fashion and I have found some really inspiring designers. As a mom I try to keep my wardrobe simple, small, and easy to wear. Occasional massages and pedicures are also really nice. Oh! And actually finishing my cup of tea—half the time I brew a lovely mug of joy and then get busy and forget all about it.
Balance or harmony?
Definitely harmony. I feel like balance is this elusive creature that you have a sighting of once in a while but it never really sticks around. I try to create and look for harmony in all things: where we work, how we organize our lives, and how we design the collection. It should all feel organic and not forced. I feel you lose a sense of harmony when you are pushing too hard for things to work together.
How do you define wellness?
Wellness to me is not about achieving perfection. It’s a day spent doing things at a healthy pace where you have been kind to yourself and others. It’s also about nourishing your body with good food and mind with inspiring environment. Sometimes these things seem a world away, but if you can at least get a nice meal in your belly, you’re doing something right.
What book do you think all women need to read?
A Vindication of the Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft. It’s reflective of the female experience and reminds us that our concerns are valid and this isn’t a new fight.
Pick your fuel of choice: coffee, tea, or something else (if so, what?).
Harney & Sons Irish Breakfast Tea, for sure! Iced coffee only when I haven’t gotten enough sleep.
What’s your ideal day off of work?
This is about to sound like the least exciting thing, but I love being at home with my family. It’s nice when my husband takes over the morning baby duties and lets me sleep in. Also family naps are THE BEST—we eat a big brunch and all pass out for about three hours. That stuff is glorious. Just slowing down as a family and enjoying each other’s company is really nice.
What was your first job?
Oh, this is so nerdy. I was a librarian aid. I taught retired people how to use the internet in the Chicago suburbs.
What has been your biggest obstacle in building your company, and how did you overcome it?
My background is in engineering, so learning how the fashion business works was a significant challenge. It’s one thing to create cute clothes, but a whole different challenge to market and sell it to the right customer. It’s important to try new things, see what works, and not be afraid of failure. I am still learning a lot every day. We still have a long way to go before we can say we know all we need to know!
How do you stay motivated?
Watching our little customers enjoy the clothes we create is what keeps us going. There is so much hard work that goes into a collection, sometimes you forget that your product will even be worn by actual people. It’s really rewarding to see boutique buyers and customers get excited about details that we lost so much sleep over.
