How To Get Smells Out Of Tupperware (And Other Incredible Kitchen Hacks)

As a child, I loved to cook. After my parents gave me an American Girl cookbook for Christmas one year, cooking quickly became a favorite hobby of mine. By the time I was ten, I was able to cook a few favorite meals for my family—and a whole lot of baked goods.
As fun as it was for me, I think the cookbook was a gift my mom grew to regret. I may have been a good cook, but I was a messy one, too. I would leave flour scattered across the floor, stain my clothes, and always managed to break a plate or a glass.
Not a lot has changed in the time since. I’m great with food prep, but I always manage to trash my kitchen in the process. My walls are perpetually splattered with tomato sauce or bacon grease, and most of my t-shirts are littered with stains. Neatness simply isn’t my strong suit, to say the least.
HealthyWay
I have, however, been working on this fault of mine. I eventually realized that my failure to clean as I go (and my propensity for being excessively messy) was creating extra work for me. I was spending way, way too much time trying to make up for the disasters I’d created while cooking a simple dinner. Cleaning may not be my strongest skill, but I’m learning from some fellow moms, and a few expert cleaners, that it doesn’t have to be complicated.
HealthyWay
If the same messes and stains are continually getting to you, there might be a hack to make your life simpler. Need help, say, getting smells out of Tupperware or scraping baked-on food from the microwave? Check out these genius hacks before throwing in the towel.

First, don’t throw that GladWare away.

I have to admit, I’ve thrown away an embarrassing amount of Tupperware simply because they stunk—the stinky things were forgotten in the back of the fridge or left in a lunch bag over the weekend. But it turns out stained and smelly containers don’t have to be tossed.
HealthyWay
“Baking soda, ammonia, vinegar, and bleach are the four things you need to pretty much clean anything,” says Judy Woodward Bates—an author, speaker, and TV personality known as the Bargainomics Lady—who struggles with stinky Tupperware no more. “Make a paste of baking soda and water and rub [it] onto stained plasticware, and let it stand for a few minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.”

A Non-Toxic Approach to Microwave Messes

Many people opt to avoid cleaning products in their microwave because of the fumes they can create if any cleaning product is left behind. But without the help of products, cleaning a microwave can be totally tedious, especially with all that food baked on.
This trick from Jeanne Eschenberg Sager, mother and self-professed “queen of doing as little as possible,” uses natural ingredients to get stubborn messes out of the inside of her microwave.
HealthyWay
“Fill a cup with a mixture of water and lemon juice,” she instructs. “Pop it in the microwave and let it ‘cook’ for a minute. It will loosen all the baked on gunk … in the microwave, so you don’t have to scrub at all. You can just wipe it right down!”

Don’t Despair Over Drink Spills

Nearly every time I host a dinner party or family get together, some dark beverage ends up all over my living room floor. There’s no need to rearrange furniture to cover up these stains. Home designer and creator of a machine-washable rug Lorena Canals has a few genius stain-removing hacks up her sleeve.
HealthyWay
For fruit-based juices, she advises starting with quickly soaking up as much of the spill as you can to avoid it soaking into the fibers of the carpet. Avoid scrubbing. Then, mix ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide, ½ cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of dish soap together to create a stain-fighting solution.
“Using a clean sponge or cloth towel, gently blot this mixture onto the carpet … ,” she says. “Using a clean, dry, white cloth towel, gently blot … .”
Repeat the last two steps until the stain is completely gone.
HealthyWay
Coffee is another drink that can cause stubborn stains when spilled on rugs and carpet. Canals recommends beginning by drying the spilled coffee with a dry, white towel. Then, mix ¼ cup of vinegar with a quart of warm water. Spritz the mixture on the stain, rinse, and repeat until the stain is gone.

Rescue Your Favorite Coffee Mug

When you have three kids in four years like I did, coffee becomes the beverage of choice. Unfortunately, I often neglect my favorite mug overnight, and I’ve even left it in the car over the weekend.
HealthyWay
But see, I’ve found a couple different hacks that are perfect for dealing with stubborn tea or coffee stains. My first method of attack is a paste made from lemon juice and baking soda. I scrub it on, wipe it off, and rinse the cups clean.
If there is still a ring or stain in the cup, I fill the cup past the stain with undiluted vinegar, leave it overnight, and rinse it clean in the morning.

Set Yourself Free From Fingerprints

Stainless steel faucets are really hard to get—and keep—clean in most kitchens. Even after a good scrub, they start to show fingerprints after just a few uses. Fell fingerprints and water stains with this hack from Joanna Douglas, the owner of Clean Affinity, a home cleaning service in Portland, Oregon.
HealthyWay
“For cleaning faucets and other pipes, we use waxed paper. This method gets rid of fingerprints and small stains,” she explains.

Rid Your Clothes of Cooking Stains

I’m the worst about remembering to wear my apron while I’m cooking, which means I’m regularly battling stains on my clothes. When it comes to most stains, Douglas says that a mixture of dishwashing soap and salt will easily remove the stain in less than five minutes.
HealthyWay
For more serious stains, or stains that have been ignored for a bit too long, Lauren Haynes, supervisor at Star Domestic Cleaners, has a few tried and true hacks her company uses.
For butter stains, for instance, you should always begin by scraping, not scrubbing, as much of the butter as possible off of the clothing. Then, rub the spot with dishwashing soap, rinse, and repeat until all of the butter and soap are gone. Before washing the clothing, pretreat the stain with a stain remover and wash on the hottest setting.
HealthyWay
“For gravy and ketchup stains, begin with removing the excess material and blot with a clean, white cloth,” she says. “Then mix 2 cups of cool water with a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Apply the solution to a white cloth, and blot [the spot] until the liquid is absorbed. If necessary, repeat the process until the spot is gone. To remove the remaining cleaning solution, blot the area again with another cloth rinsed in cool water. At the end, blot dry, and you are done.”

Scrub Away Soap Scum

The tile, sinks, and faucets often become problem areas in kitchens because of soap scum and residue.
It’s a special kind of frustrating—soap is the chosen one! It was said that it would destroy the scum, not join it; bring cleanliness to the sink, not leave it in filth.
HealthyWay
Fortunately, you don’t need a store-bought solution to get rid of soap scum. Simply create a paste from 1 cup of baking soda and a few tablespoons of vinegar. Apply this paste to areas with soap residue, and use a sponge to scrub away.

Never Dust Cabinet Tops Again

Early this year, I painted our kitchen a fresh coat of white. Climbing the counters to paint hard to reach areas, I was horrified to find a thick layer of dust settled in the space between the top of my cabinets and the ceiling. It was the biggest pain to clean up, taking several rags just to get the top layer of dust and dirt wiped away. I wish I had spoken with Woodward years ago, when we first moved into this home.
HealthyWay
“If you have kitchen cabinets that don’t go all the way to the ceiling, cut or fold newspaper to cover the tops of the cabinets,” she suggests. “Instead of spending ages cleaning built-up gunk off your cabinets, just change out the paper from time to time.”

Stop Wiping Away Toast Crumbs

If your toaster leaves a sprinkle of toast crumbs on your counter every morning, it’s probably time for a deep clean of this kitchen appliance. I’m embarrassed to say that, until just recently, I had no clue that there was a “right” way to clean out a toaster.
HealthyWay
As it turns out, each toaster has spring loaded trays on the bottom that can be completely removed. These trays catch most of the crumbs. Once you’ve unplugged your toaster, you can remove them, dump them, and give them a good soak in soap and water.

Oh, and before putting it back together, use a pastry brush to free crumbs trapped in other areas of the toaster, and wipe the toaster down with vinegar for good measure.

More Cleaning Hacks From The HealthyWay Staff

Ask around any office and you’ll find that lots of people have a cleaning trick or two up their sleeves. Well, the HealthyWay office is no different. When we started talking about this article, everyone wanted to contribute something.
And why not? When it comes to cleaning techniques, more is definitely better. Check out some of our colleagues’ favorite easy-cleaning hacks from around the web.

Clean That Hard-To-Reach Space Between The Stove And Counter

It’s easier not to think about it. In fact, we’re almost sorry to bring it up. But there is probably a crevice between your stove and the surrounding countertop, and it is almost certainly a filthy, crumb-infested nightmare.

image
iStock.com/Wavebreakmedia

Tight spaces full of crumbs aren’t just gross to think about. They also attract pests like roaches, who love the free meals and the dark, narrow pathway. So yes, this is a space we should all clean regularly. Luckily, there’s an easy way to achieve a crumb-free crevice in no time flat.
If the space is super-narrow, start with a clean butter knife. Keep the blade facing away from you and scrape out that crack. Don’t worry about the pile of debris that’ll form on the floor just yet; you can always vacuum that up later.

iStock.com/gerenme

If you have a little more space to work with, you’re in luck. You can wrap a microfiber towel around the knife for an even more effective cleaning solution. For really thick gaps, substitute a yardstick for the knife.

Why pay for floor cleaner when you can make your own?

By the end of the week, our kitchen floors provide a detailed record of the family’s dining and social life. It isn’t pretty. There’s a splash of Monday’s spaghetti here, a splatter of juice from when the toddler had a temper tantrum during lunch…it’s all there, written in gunk.
Time to clean the slate (along with the floor). But floor-cleaning products seem to come in only two styles: Overly harsh on the one hand, ineffective on the other. That’s why we’re eternally grateful for this DIY floor-cleaner recipe from lifestyle blog One Good Thing.

image
iStock.com/kirstyokeeffe

It’s mild and mostly natural. At the same time, it packs serious grease-cutting power. This recipe is ideal for tile floors—and if your kitchen is floored in fine wood or, worse, carpeted, you’ve got bigger problems than finding a good cleaner.
You only need three ingredients: white vinegar, liquid dish soap, and washing soda. Oh, plus water, if you count that (in which case you need four ingredients). Combine ¼ cup of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, ¼ cup of washing soda, and 2 gallons of hot water. Mix well, and commence mopping!

Deodorize The Garbage Disposal The Natural Way

Garbage disposals would be the perfect clean-up amenity if it weren’t for their habit of collecting foul odors like the deranged curator of an olfactory museum. The good news is that it’s not as hard as you might think. You can make your own disposal-deodorizing cubes with a little citrus fruit, vinegar, and baking soda, as we learned from YouTube cooking show Cooking with Kyler.

image
iStock.com/-Oxford-

First off, build your cleansing cubes. Chop half of 1 lemon and half of 1 lime into small bits and spread them evenly into each cell of a standard ice cube tray. Then fill the tray with distilled white vinegar and freeze overnight. That’s right: We’re making vinegar-ice.
When the cubes are good and frozen, let the hot water run for a minute, then pour about ½ cup of  baking soda down the maw of your garbage disposal. Drop in a single vinegar-citrus ice cube and run your disposal until the terrible odors are all flushed away. It’s that simple.

Clean Oven Racks With This Surprise Solution

Ugh, oven racks. They collect at least a little of everything you bake. It doesn’t take long for them to become blackened, encrusted messes. They’re almost impossible to scrub clean in place, and besides, who wants to inhale that much oven cleaner?

image
iStock.com/Geo-grafika

Well, there’s an easier solution, and it involves a common cleaning product that might surprise you. We learned about this one from the house-cleaning website Clean My Space.
The first surprise is that we’re going to use the bathtub. Throw down an old towel to prevent scratching the tub, then drop in your dirty oven racks. As you fill the tub with the hottest water your pipes can serve up (don’t worry; we won’t be reaching in any time soon), mix up a cup of laundry detergent and as much water as you can fit in a Mason jar. Shake it to dissolve the detergent, then toss it into the bathtub.
image
iStock.com/Kameleon007

Now, for the easy part: Wait. We’d recommend soaking the oven racks overnight. The next morning, give them a scrub and watch the gunk flow away! Rinse, dry, put them back in the oven, and you’re done. Sorry about your towel.

Brighten Up Dingy Baking Sheets

Here’s another useful kitchen hint from One Good Thing. Have you ever noticed that cookie sheets tend to get…a little bit gross with repeated use? They develop brown burn streaks, bits of yesteryear’s cookies, and other pollutants, both flat and three-dimensional.
And these are not normal stains. You can scrub your baking sheets in dishwashing detergent for as long as you like without making any progress. It isn’t the elbow grease that’s the problem; it’s the cleaning product. Time to try something new.
Well, according to One Good Thing, the secret you’ve been missing just requires two pantry staples you probably have in your home already: baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. (Put that hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle; it’ll be far easier to apply.)

image
iStock.com/Joe_Potato

All you have to do is sprinkle a layer of baking soda on your stained baking sheet, follow with an even spritzing of hydrogen peroxide, and ending with a final layer of baking soda. Then, you wait.
Come back a few hours later and start scrubbing. Previously unbeatable stains will melt away before your eyes. So much for buying new baking sheets every year!

The Fastest, Easiest Way To Clean Refrigerator Shelves

Refrigerator shelving is one of those cleaning tasks we tend to avoid. You can’t just wipe the surface down with a towel, like the counter. You have to carefully remove everything and lean in to scrub at a back-breaking angle. Even then, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to scrape away ancient ketchup spills and juice remnants.

image
iStock.com/AndrewRafalsky

An anonymous Reddit user is here to save us all. This contributor, who goes by the online handle “thinkadinky,” recommends covering refrigerator shelves with plastic wrap. (Don’t use the kind that you use to preserve, say, a half-eaten sandwich. You want the kind that adheres to a flat surface.)
Think about that for a second. If your shelves are covered in an impenetrable layer of clean plastic, you only have to wash them one last time. In a few months, when the spills have coagulated, you can just peel away the plastic wrap and lay down a new layer.
Now, if only they’d make a plastic wrap that secures to the floor…

Banish Tough Grease Stains With Common Ingredients

Let’s talk splatter, and not just any old kind. We need to discuss the hot oil that splashes and steams its way onto every surface of the kitchen. Don’t think that happens on your range? Just check the oven hood.
We’re always amazed by the oil splash zone in our kitchen. Somehow, grease seems to float through the air to secure itself to surfaces and appliances across the room. We don’t know the science, but at least we know how to fix the problem.
This is a trick we learned from the decor blog Thrifty and Chic. Their writers insist it only takes two products to blast those grease stains into oblivion: Mineral oil (often called “baby oil,” frequently with a scent mixed in) and a spritzer bottle containing one part white vinegar, two parts water, and a dribble of liquid dishwashing soap.

image
iStock.com/Jan-Schneckenhaus

First, wipe down your problem-surface with the mineral oil. Grease binds to grease; ironically, the best way to fight oil is with oil. You might have to scrub a bit, but this technique will be far more effective than soap and a scrub, and with less work.
Of course, now you’ve got a new problem. You’ve got a surface covered in mineral oil. Here’s where your spritzer solution comes in. Just spray down the mineral-oil-cleaned area, wipe it smooth, and repeat until your kitchen is like new.

Make Kitchen Tile Grout Like New

Whether you’ve got filth on your kitchen tile or your backsplash could use a little TLC, chances are you’ve been frustrated by the challenge of scrubbing grout clean. There’s just something about this stuff that soaks up the dirt.
Well, you might have heard of a DIY scrubbing mixture that pops up all over the internet, particularly as a shower-cleaning hack. It’s just equal parts liquid dish soap and white vinegar. The writers over at A Pretty Life in the Suburbs swear by this stuff as a grout-cleaner in the bathroom, the kitchen, and beyond.

image
iStock.com/Greg Bethmann

Start by microwaving the vinegar. This isn’t fancy home chemistry or anything; it just helps the dish soap to dissolve fully into the liquid. Try 1 cup each of dish soap and vinegar, and get your spray bottle (at least 2 cups capacity, please) ready.
Pour the dish soap into the hot vinegar, then add the whole mixture to your spray bottle. Shake it up until it’s fully mixed. Then you’re ready to go. And remember: A little bit goes a long way.
Spray the solution onto filthy grout and let it work into the surface for a few minutes. Then scrub, scrub, scrub! A toothbrush works pretty well. Once you’ve got the grout good and clean, rinse the whole area with hot water to remove the soapy residue. You’ll be shocked by how that grout can shine, no matter how many years’ worth of gunk you had to blast through.

Welcome to your new kitchen.

She’s The Breadwinner: Why Happiness On The Homefront Might Be At Stake When Women Out-Earn Their Partners

There’s something interesting happening with a number of heterosexual couples: When the woman in the couple earns more than the man, the two spouses tend to report their incomes differently. The woman in the couple will say she makes less than she actually does, and the man will undervalue what she makes, too.
Meanwhile, the man is more likely to say he earns more than he actually does—and the wife is likely to say the same. Translation: Some people are still struggling with the idea of a female breadwinner in a heterosexual marriage.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Peopleimages

The Census Bureau recently discovered this trend among married couples when they saw that couples’ self-reporting didn’t always match their IRS filings.
“When a wife earns more, both husbands and wives exaggerate the husband’s earnings and diminish the wife’s,” according to a Census.gov article published in July 2018. “But husbands overstate their own earnings less than wives do, and wives devalue their own earnings less than husbands do.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/AndreyPopov

Basically, women who out-earn their male partners underreport their earnings, downplaying their financial success; the men in these relationships understate their wives’ earnings even further. Further, both parties overstate the husband’s earnings, with women exaggerating the most.
It’s clear that our culture is uncomfortable with women earning the majority of the money in their relationship. Why is this, and how common are female breadwinners anyway? Here’s what you should know.

In the United States, it wasn’t common for married or coupled women to work outside the home until a few decades ago.

Of course, women have always labored and contributed to their partnerships or families. Women around the world have done agricultural work for millennia and continue to do so today. Women also took on the brunt of work around the home, including cooking, cleaning, childcare, and laundry. Worldwide, many single and coupled women work outside of their homes to bring in an income, supporting themselves and their families.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/milanvirijevic

That said, in the United States specifically, it wasn’t common for married women to work in non-agricultural, professional settings until World War II. According to a book by labor historian Kim Moody, “The rate of participation of women in the labor force rose from about 28 percent in 1940 to 37 percent in 1945 and then fell to 30 percent in 1947. By 1950, it was around 32 percent, below the wartime peak but above the prewar level.”
In 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are 74.6 million women in the American civilian labor force. Almost 47 percent of people working in the U.S. are women. And moms are currently the “primary or sole earners” for a full 40 percent of households with kids under 18. Back in 1960, this number was just 11 percent. And data from the Pew Research Center suggests that 28 percent of women earn more than their husband or male partner, while 3 percent earn the same salary.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/NoSystem images

Data also shows that many people still hold old-fashioned opinions about what men and women’s roles within a partnership or family should be. According to the same Pew research, 71 percent of Americans say it’s “very important” for a man to be “able to support a family financially to be a good husband or partner.” Only 32 percent say the same about women. And 51 percent of Pew survey respondents believe that kids are better off if they have a mother who stays home with them and doesn’t hold a job outside the home—compared to 8 percent who say the same thing about a father.

Research shows that issues can arise when women out-earn their male partners.

One study found that woman breadwinners were more likely to spend time on household chores than their partners and that these couples were “less satisfied with their marriage and are more likely to divorce.” Another found that heterosexual men’s self-esteem took a hit when their partner was successful at a given task. Another found that working moms were still more involved in childcare than their working partners.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/PeopleImages

Essentially, the research indicates that working women who out-earn their male partners are more likely to take on the bulk of the housework and, if they have children, to handle the majority of childcare. Plus, their partners were more likely to struggle from self-esteem issues due to their success. Unsurprisingly, this can cause all sorts of problems.
[pullquote align=”center”]“You think you have it all. Your career is rocking, you’re providing for your family … it’s everything your mother and grandmothers dreamed about for you. Then someone asks, ‘Is your husband okay with your success?’”
—Lisa Earle McLeod[/pullquote]
Lisa Earle McLeod, founder of McLeod & More and author of Selling with Noble Purpose, has been the breadwinner in her family for the past ten years. She says that other people’s questions regarding her family dynamic were extremely frustrating, and notes that no one asked her about her feelings when her husband was the breadwinner for a decade.
HealthyWay
McLeod Speaking at TEDxCentennialParkWomen in 2015 (TEDx Talks/YouTube)

“You think you have it all,” she says. “Your career is rocking, you’re providing for your family, your business is growing, you feel fulfilled, it’s everything your mother and grandmothers dreamed about for you. Then someone asks, ‘Is your husband okay with your success?’”

McLeod says her reaction to this type of question or comment varies. Sometimes it saddens her, and other times she’ll hit back with a sarcastic response. If a man asked her the question, she says she will ask him if his wife is okay with his success. She says that these type of comments can make her and her husband self-conscious, even though he is incredibly supportive of her career.
“This conversation spills over into your marriage,” she says. “We like to think we’re immune to the opinions of others, but we’re not. You find yourself asking, ‘Is it weird for you? Do you feel uncomfortable?’ The worst is when you find yourself minimizing your accomplishments—something men rarely do.”
https://twitter.com/diepthought/status/768167469814919168
Sadly, research shows that couples where the woman is the breadwinner are more likely to divorce. Data collected by the University of Chicago’s Booth Business School found that a woman out-earning her husband “increases the likelihood of divorce by 50 percent.”

Ultimately, every couple should do what works for them and their family.

But if you are a woman breadwinner (or plan to assume that role in the future) and your partner isn’t handling it well, what should you do?
Experts say that frank communication is key.
[pullquote align=”center”]“In my relationship, there have been times that I was the main breadwinner. …By treating everything as ‘ours’ and making plans together, there is never resentment whenever one of us is the bigger breadwinner.”
—Jamie Klingman, real estate broker[/pullquote]
“Create time in your relationship to talk about this dynamic and how you both are feeling about it, says couples’ therapist Heidi McBain. “Have a conversation about what this ‘role reversal’ means to each of you personally as well as professionally, and figure out ways that you can best support each other. Actively listen to what your partner is saying, even if it’s hard to hear at times.”

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Morsa Images

Communication and prioritizing each person’s happiness is how Jamie Klingman, a real estate broker, makes things work when she is earning more than her partner. She and her husband have learned to adapt and compromise depending on the other person’s schedule and duties.
“In my relationship, there have been times that I was the main breadwinner. We both prioritize happiness in our careers, and that leads to times where one of us makes more than another,” Klingman says. “We plan for each season and share our financial goals and expenditures. By treating everything as ‘ours’ and making plans together, there is never resentment whenever one of us is the bigger breadwinner.”
HealthyWay
iStock.com/franckreporter

“We also realign duties depending on our workloads,” she says. “I take the bigger share when my schedule isn’t as taxed, and he does when his is less. By regularly evaluating and adjusting and prioritizing each other’s most important ‘musts,’ the rest follows suit.”
McBain says that couples who are struggling to talk things out on their own should think about seeing a therapist together to tackle the issues they are facing. There is nothing shameful about going to therapy—a counselor’s office can be a safe space to share any feelings of frustration, resentment, or sadness. Plus, trained counselors can offer you helpful communication tools and ideas for repairing your relationship if needed.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/PeopleImages

“Couples’ counseling is a great resource and safe place to have these conversations if you’ve tried on your own and haven’t gotten anywhere,” she says. “A trained therapist can help you see the dysfunctional patterns in your relationship and help you to create new, healthier ways of interacting with each other.”

Going forward, it seems likely that young people plan on forging their own paths, regardless of traditional gender roles.

Research shows that college students don’t necessarily plan to follow the caregiver–breadwinner model in their families or partnerships. To be clear, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this model—it works for many people and families across the United States and all over the world.
But women who want to be the breadwinners in their families, or earn the same as their partners, should be just as widely accepted as those who earn less than their partners or are full-time caregivers or homemakers.

Young people of all genders report that they plan to up-end traditional family frameworks and do what works for them—and we should all be on board with that.

5 Mistakes Homeowners Are Bound To Make

There’s a great big myth that comes with buying a house. Your mortgage, that giant bill that floats over your head for 20 to 30 years before you finally pay off the bank, is the most expensive part of owning a house. Right?
Wrong!
When it comes down to it, that princely sum you put down on your dream digs is just the start of it. According to the folks at Bankrate, the average homeowner spends at least $2,000 a year on maintenance services alone. And in the most expensive areas of the country, Angie’s List estimates it actually costs $2,000 or more a month to own a house, once you add in mortgage, utility costs, real estate taxes, property insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Even when you work your way down their list to cheaper spots around the country, homeowners are still facing figures in the triple digits to keep up with all it takes to own a home.

HealthyWay

Okay, now hold on a second. Don’t start freaking out.
There are still plenty of science-backed benefits that come with buying your own place, especially from a social perspective. Owning your own space can make you feel good, and that’s always a good thing.
What you need is to be prepared for some of the OMG, I didn’t even think about it issues that tend to come up for homeowners…that end up costing them serious cash.
We asked HealthyWay readers to fess up to some of their worst mistakes as homeowners. They shared, so you can avoid their fate!

1. Roof Regrets

“This is embarrassing, but I really didn’t think about our roof at all until the night we woke up to water pouring into our bedroom. We have a two-story house, and I just … didn’t have a reason to really look up, but when the contractor showed up, he showed us all the gross shingles we should have noticed as a sign that the roof needed to be replaced!”
—Maria B.

A leaky roof can come out of nowhere, and it’s typically not something you’ll notice, at least not until you spot that strange-colored ring on the ceiling—if you’re lucky enough to spot it before the water actually leaks through!
The average roof repair can cost anywhere from $334 to $1,238, according to the estimates from HomeAdvisor, so sooner rather than later is key to saving cash.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/BanksPhotos

“Roofs are sometimes one of the most neglected—and expensive—components of a house,” says Roger Kautz, owner of Hearthstone Home Inspections in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
“Ideally, one should look at his or her roof—by walking on it if possible—annually, or at least every three years,” Kautz advises. “Obviously, a water stain on your ceiling is a Do not ignore sign of a problem, but other issues to be looking for include curled, cracked, damaged, or out-of-place shingles, metal or rubber flashing—the material used to bridge gaps—that is damaged or not providing a secure seal between components, damaged or clogged gutters, and cracks or deterioration in chimneys.”
HealthyWay
iStock.com/Caymia

If you’ve got a drone, Kautz suggests putting it to work to do a view of what’s going on on top of your home, without ever having to leave the ground.
“People who have drones now have one of the best tools for inspecting roofs, and if they do it often enough, they are more likely to notice any irregularities,” he says.
It’s also wise to clean your gutters twice a year, says J.B. Sassano, president of Mr. Handyman. It will help prevent roof issues and protect other parts of the home as well.
“Failing to clean gutters can lead to serious and expensive repairs including roof damage, wood rot on decks, windows, and doors, et cetera,” he explains.

2. Filter Follow-Through

“We forget to change the water filter, resulting in no water to the second floor shower … which lead to changing the water filter at 1 a.m.—after getting home from an event where we were sweaty, dirty and gross—in our skivvies so we could shower!”
—Sandra H.

Filters do big jobs all around the house—from the devices filtering rust out of our water to the air conditioning filters snatching dust out of the air. But the more they clean our air, water, and more, the more clogged they get.
The fix is two-fold, Kautz says.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/gopfaster

First, and most importantly, buy good filters! “One should stay away from the really cheap, see-through filters, as they trap only big stuff,” he advises. “The rule of thumb is to replace basic filters every month, during both the heating and cooling season. Better filters can last for up to three months, and the thick 4- or 5-inch filters are typically changed once a year
“Every house and family is different, however, so I recommend one begin by checking the filter monthly, and if it is not obviously dirty, it may be fine for another month,” Kautz notes.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/slobo

If you’ve got an oil-burning furnace, it’s also recommended that you get an annual tune-up and cleaning from a professional in addition to making the filter switches as needed. If you’ve got a gas furnace or boiler, you can likely get by with check-ups every two or three years instead.
“But homeowners should also refer to their warranty and not void it by skipping tune-ups,” Kautz warns.

3. Water, Water, Everywhere

“We were trying to save money, so I would set the temperature in the house down while we were out during the day, then turn it back up when we go home. I completely forgot that the pipes needed the heat, too, and I got home from work to find one pipe had burst and we had water everywhere.”
—Tina T.

Water can do big-time damage in no time, so it’s no surprise that burst pipes are not just one of the most common plumbing problems, but one of those home repairs that can cost you big money. HomeAdvisor estimates repairing water damage costs over $2,500, and that doesn’t include the cost of installing new pipes!
“When pipes freeze, they restrict running water, which prevents completing normal tasks such as taking a shower or cooking,” Sassano says. But that’s the least of the problems for many homeowners. When water freezes, it also expands, and if there’s not enough room for that expanding ice, a pipe could burst, sending water everywhere.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/FurryZen

If you’re planning to turn down the heat, it’s important to drain the pipes and turn off the water line. That’s the easiest way to prevent the water from freezing inside. If for some reason you can’t do that, it’s important to check the pipes.
“The most susceptible pipes to freezing are outdoor hose bibs, water sprinkler lines, plumbing in unheated interior spaces lacking insulation such as basement, garages, crawl spaces, et cetera,” Sassano warns.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/CatLane

He suggests watching for frost on exposed piping; that will indicate it may be frozen. If you fear that your pipes are frozen, turn off the main water line, then open the faucet that is supplied by the frozen pipe to release pressure.
You can then apply heat by turning up the thermostat or using a hairdryer or electric heating pad, Sassano suggests.

4. A Moldy Matter

“My bedroom closet is in a dark corner of the room, and it doesn’t have a light in it. It started to smell a little musty, but I didn’t think anything of it. Come to find out, my closet ceiling and walls were full of toxic mold. Apparently the sink in our upstairs bathroom was leaking into my closet for months, and it cost us almost 10 grand to fix it all!”
—Lyn R.

Mold isn’t just unsightly. It can be downright dangerous, causing a range of respiratory problems. It can also be a huge headache for a homeowner, with estimates for mold remediation sitting at more than $2,000 on average.
The good news, Sassano says, is that most mold growth can be prevented before your home turns into a health hazard. That’s because mold is a bacteria that flourishes in moisture. Warding off that moisture, or cleaning up any water immediately, can keep mold from taking hold.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Heiko Küverling

Every spring, Sassano suggests checking your attic for mold, as it’s one of the most susceptible spots. Attics should be well ventilated and properly insulated to ward off mold growth. Any leaks—from the roof or anywhere else in the house—should be dried up immediately.

5. Dryer Fire

“We had a fire a few years ago because the vent from our dryer to outside backed up. The fire department came really fast, and we were really lucky, but it was so scary! I never knew you needed to have the vent cleaned.”
—Christa O.

Nearly 3,000 dryer fires are reported every year, costing some $35 million in property losses and an estimated five losses of life, according to the U.S Fire Administration (USFA), a division of FEMA.
Startling as those statistics might be, there is good news: These fires can easily be prevented with regular dryer cleanings.

The USFA urges people to clean the areas where lint is readily apparent—the lint filter and the back of the dryer—as well as the dryer vent, the oft-ignored catchall for the lint being expelled as the machine sucks the moisture out of your favorite pair of jeans.
“If your clothes aren’t fully dried after a dryer cycle or an odd smell appears or your exterior vents aren’t expelling air,” Sassano says, the culprit is likely your dryer vent. The issue should be addressed immediately.

Many homeowners forget about the dryer vent that connects their machine with the rest of the world—usually a vent to the outside of the home. That should be cleaned at least once a year, Sassano says, preferably by an expert who can cart away the build-up that tends to spark a fire. The USFA is more cautious, recommending the vent pipe be cleaned every three months.

Turn Your Bedroom Into A Feng Shui Sanctuary

Once upon a time, back when I was a single gal, my bedroom was my private oasis; it was my getaway from lousy jobs, roommates, and sometimes just life in general. From the paint color I meticulously chose in the aisle at Sherwin-Williams to the bedding I scored during a Pottery Barn clearance sale, I designed my bedroom to be an inviting, calming space.
Even though I had no idea what it was back then, I was trying to create a feng shui bedroom: a place of positive energy where I could recharge. The ancient Chinese practice of feng shui goes way deeper than picking out paint colors, though. Here’s how to get a feng shui bedroom, according to the experts.

What is feng shui?

The term feng shui gets thrown around a lot to describe things that have a soothing effect, but the practice of feng shui goes so much deeper. It’s actually the ancient Chinese version of geomancy, the practice of using the earth’s energy to place structures and buildings to promote good fortune.

“Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art of moving energy, or chi, in order to create harmonious surroundings that enhance the balance of yin and yang energy both within a person and their surroundings,” explains feng shui expert Michelle Cromer.
Western feng shui has evolved over the centuries, Cromer says. Four thousand years ago, she explains, “the classical practice of feng shui was an outward-to-in approach emphasizing environmental aesthetics like geography and topography. But Western feng shui has simplified the process into tangible results.”

How to Create a Feng Shui Bedroom

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans spend almost 10 hours per day on personal care, including sleep. That’s at least one-third of your day! Between snoozing, getting busy, and relaxing, though, we probably spend much more than a third of the day in our sleeping space, which is why creating a feng shui bedroom is so worthwhile, even if you can’t feng shui your whole home.
“In feng shui, chi, or energy, enters and exits through all of the windows and doors of any space,” says Cromer. Before designing any feng shui bedroom layout, you’ll want to take note of where your bedroom doors and windows are located. Their location will make a big difference in how you position your bed, which is the most important aspect of a feng shui bedroom.
[pullquote align=”center”]How you position your bed is the most important aspect of a feng shui bedroom.[/pullquote]

Place your bed in a commanding position.

For the best flow of energy, place your bed in a commanding position—a powerful spot where you can clearly see, but are not in front of, the door. Put simply, the feng shui commanding position is all about putting you in a position of power, regardless of what room you’re arranging.
For example, in your office, you don’t face your desk away from the door toward the wall. Instead, your desk should face out, looking toward the door, putting you in charge when people enter your office. In a nutshell, that’s what you want in your bedroom. So what does this look like exactly?

Place your bed against a wall.

Ideally, position your bed against a solid wall that will provide a strong background to ground the room’s energy, diagonal to the entryway. The perfectionist in you might cringe, but in a feng shui bedroom layout, your bed doesn’t need to be centered on the wall. In fact, you want as much space between you and the door as possible.

Try to avoid placing your bed on a wall with windows, says Cromer, as windows allow the flow of energy into the room that could create a feeling of vulnerability. In a commanding position, you want to ground as much of the energy into your bed as possible.

Less is more.

Once you’ve found the commanding position for your bed, continue to ground the room with the rest of your bedroom furniture, and remember: Less is more. Place large furniture, like a dresser or chest, directly opposite the bed if possible to counterbalance the strong, grounded energy of the bed.

Choose a bed with space underneath.

This will allow energy to flow through the room. “We are intimately connected to the energy of our bed,” Cromer tells HealthyWay. “The energy needs to circulate around your body when you sleep, which is not possible if the bed goes all the way to the floor or if there are objects under the bed.”

Don’t place a mirror in front of your bed.

“Mirrors in feng shui have unique abilities. They can double or reflect energy, and they can be used as a water feature since they have reflective properties,” says Cromer. “Mirrors that face a bed can cause restless sleep.” Keep in mind that according to Cromer, TVs are also considered mirrors “since they have the same reflective properties.”
[related article_ids=18513]
If you must have a mirror in your room—if it is attached to an existing piece of furniture, for example—Cromer suggests covering it at night with a pashmina so as to keep that energy out of the room as you sleep.

Anchor your bed to the floor with a rug.

“Feng shui really reminds us about the importance of a balance in life,” says Laura Benko, author of The Holistic Home: Feng Shui for Mind, Body, Spirit, Space. “The softness of a rug balances out the cold, hard floors.”

Aim for symmetry.

“Symmetry is a simple way to achieve visual balance and harmony. Since the bedroom can be a reflection of the partnerships between the people living in the home, its symmetry is critical,” Cromer emphasizes.
To achieve symmetry in the bedroom, Cromer says that both sides of the bed should look identical. If you have a nightstand on one side, you should have one on the other. Likewise with lamps, candles, chairs, and other objects in the room.

Don’t let your room get cluttered.

“Staying organized and having a clutter-free home is crucial and one of the major principles in feng shui,” says Cromer. “Clutter robs the inhabitants of vitality and slows down opportunities and creates health issues. Clutter stops the flow of energy and this has an impact on our internal energetic flow.”
To cut down on clutter in your bedroom, give Swedish death cleaning a try (it isn’t as ominous as it sounds, I promise).

Remove EMF pollution.

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are invisible fields of energy emitted by electronic devices, like microwaves and cell phones, and they can negatively impact your chi in a big way, says Cromer.
To keep EMF pollution at a minimum, try to keep devices—like your phone and other screens—out of the bedroom. If that’s not possible, then charge your device as far away from your bed as possible, Cromer advises.

Feng Shui Colors

In feng shui, different colors are associated with the five feng shui elements: earth, water, wood, fire, and metal. Colors, then, are ultra important in setting the feng shui tone for your bedroom. But if you’re waiting for a feng shui expert to tell you exactly what color to paint your room, you’re out of luck; there are no right or wrong feng shui bedroom colors!
Essentially, you want your room to feel safe, secure, and serene. For me, that color is a pale, beachy blue. But for you, that color might be a warm, earth-toned terra cotta.
feng shui bedroom pink
The only color you don’t want in your feng shui bedroom? Too much red, says Benko. “Fiery tones of red and orange are too stimulating for rest and relaxation. Keeping the bedroom in white, creams, pastels, or muted colors [is] more conducive to a good night’s sleep.”
But that doesn’t mean red is completely off limits in your feng shui bedroom. According to Cromer, if your room needs more passion, pops of fiery reds, like in your rug or decor, can add just the right amount of emotional energy.
As for decorating, feng shui is all about simplicity, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your own style. “Feng shui of today is not about a banal palette of neutrals; it’s not about using zen-like decor, nor is it about filling your home with culturally rich tchotchkes of Foo dogs and dragons,” says Benko.
Instead, for feng shui decorating, think about what moves and inspires you. Don’t clutter the walls, but place a few carefully chosen pieces of art that represent positivity, creativity, and good energy.

Feng Shui on a Budget

“Feng shui is never about spending a lot of money,” Benko tells HealthyWay.
“Because feng shui is the art of placement, repurposing items a person already has is normally all it takes,” Cromer adds. “Painting a room or a wall is oftentimes the only expense a person may have when incorporating feng shui into their space.”
If you don’t want to spend a ton of money, but you still want an in-home oasis, here are Benko’s favorite tips for getting a feng shui bedroom (and they don’t cost a dime!):

  1. Declutter, pare down, and surround yourself with only the items you absolutely love and use regularly. Get rid of items that are broken, in disrepair, or that you feel obligated to keep.
  2. Get fresh air circulating. Let the sunshine in and keep your surfaces clean and clear.
  3. Make your bed every day. It sets the tone for a prepared day and will give you a mental health boost.

Picking and Choosing Feng Shui Principles

“Good feng shui starts from the inside out. The changes you make in your space will support the changes inside of you and vice versa,” says Cromer. “So I don’t believe in bad energy, only misplaced energy.”
Cromer says you shouldn’t worry if you can’t go all the way with a feng shui bedroom because you rent or your bedroom doesn’t have a lot of options for rearranging furniture because you won’t be creating “bad” energy within your home. You can still create a feng shui oasis in your bedroom with these simple tips:

  1. If you rent, you don’t have to be stuck with the bland, beige paint your landlord chose. Use peel and stick paint (I like TemPAINT) to get the feng shui bedroom color of your dreams.
  2. If your bed can only be positioned against a wall with a window, or if your bed cannot be placed flush against a solid wall, recreate one by placing a folding screen or decorative room divider behind your headboard to help anchor the bed.
  3. Get organized to keep clutter at bay behind closet doors. Invest in inexpensive closet organization so you’re not tempted to throw all your clothes on the chair (you know what I’m talking about, ladies).

[pullquote align=”center”]“Good feng shui starts from the inside out. The changes you make in your space will support the changes inside of you and vice versa.”[/pullquote]

Benefits of a Feng Shui Bedroom

Not a whole lot of scientific research has been done to prove whether feng shui actually does have health benefits. But it would seem that many of the individual tenets of feng shui actually are beneficial to your health.
For starters, feng shui eschews clutter and disorganization. While it didn’t involve feng shui specifically, a study conducted by researchers at Indiana University found that individuals with tidy, clutter-free homes were more active and healthier overall than messier individuals.
feng shui bedroom blue
Feng shui principles hold that blues, greens, and earth tones are more conducive to calming environments—and they may make you more productive as well. Another study, conducted by Nancy Stone at Missouri University of Science and Technology, found that students who studied in rooms painted red performed poorly on assigned tasks compared to students who studied in blue carrels.
[related article_ids=1247,19578]
Additionally, a study out of UCLA found that women who live in cluttered homes have higher cortisol levels, which Stanford University reported led to a decline in self-esteem. (On the other hand, the UCLA study showed that the women who had a home they described as “restorative” actually lowered their stress levels.) People with higher self-esteem, according to one study, tend to have more satisfying romantic relationships. So it’s not too much of a stretch to say that a feng shui bedroom may even help improve intimacy between you and your partner.
Cromer says that the practice of feng shui works because it can help make sense of our energy flows. The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home, so creating a space where you can momentarily block out life’s stressors and soak up all the positive energy your feng shui bedroom oasis has to offer is critical self-care.

40 Products For Organizing Everything You Didn’t Know How To Organize

Life is messy, and therefore kitchens and cars and closets and bathrooms and everything else are messy too. While we all wish we could have perfectly organized homes, it just doesn’t seem to work out that way.
Even when we buckle down and do some much-needed cleaning, it just doesn’t seem like everything has a place. Inevitably, things end up in random locations. Then you can’t find them, you finally find them, you still don’t have somewhere to put them, and they end up in another random location, so the cycle continues.
It’s time to get your life together, which means giving everything that seemingly has no place a designated spot. Fortunately, Amazon has organizational items for pretty much everything you can imagine. That perfectly organized home could be just a couple of clicks away!

1. Use this counter display to beautifully lay out your array of nail colors.

Throwing your nail polish in a bin under your sink seems like an okay storage option, but sifting through it to find the color you’re looking for? Not ideal.

Amazon

This counter display is perfect for the at-home manicurist. It turns your bathroom or vanity into a private nail salon. With the tiered levels, you can see all your color options at once, and when you find one that suits you, you can simply pull it off the shelf.
Also, you can expand your nail color collection without worrying about where you’ll put them all since it holds 60 bottles. So pick up this holder and some new nail polish while you’re at it.

2. Take your K-Cups out of those clunky boxes and put them in this sleek drawer instead.

K-Cups are a lifeline for heavy coffee drinkers, so they should be treated with care. This drawer will be the lovely home they deserve.

Amazon

When you open it, you can see all your options and flavors, then select whatever you’re in the mood for. Place your Keurig right on top, and it’s like having a teeny-tiny coffee shop in your kitchen. If you’re a real K-Cup fiend who downs four cups of joe a day and one isn’t enough, pick up a second one (or more if necessary) and stack ‘em up. You can never have too many K-Cups, right?
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/DecoBros-Storage-Drawer-Holder-Keurig/dp/B007R900WA”]Get it on Amazon for $16.87[/link-button]

3. This is the perfect way to display your plethora of mugs.

Most homes have way too many mugs for the amount of available cabinet space, but it’s hard to part ways with our favorite drinkware. These bronzed hooks neatly hang all of your mugs under a shelf or cabinet. Now you don’t have to feel bad about all the cute mugs you’ve impulse bought, and you don’t have to stress when someone gifts you yet another mug.

Amazon

This rack is easy to install and holds 12 mugs. It also comes in a rustic bronze or classic black, so it can match pretty much any kitchen’s color scheme.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/WTT-Creative-Cabinet-Glasses-Organizer/dp/B0784SBVLS”]Get it on Amazon for $38.00[/link-button]

4. Keep your false lashes nice and neat in this handy box.

With the recent surge in “full glam” makeup, false lashes continue to grow in popularity. They’re gorgeous when they’re on, but they’re also small and dainty, so once you take them off, they can get lost anywhere. For hygiene purposes and so that you get enough wears out of each pair, people who wear false lashes should really invest in a storage space for them. Fortunately, Amazon has you covered.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This case will keep up to eighteen pairs of false eyelashes organized, and it’s made from quality acrylic material. No more finding random busted lashes at the bottom of your makeup bag!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Empire-Acrylic-Eyelash-Organizer/dp/B073PLZMWF/”]Get it on Amazon for $32.98[/link-button]

5. Keep your cords in line with these clips.

Everyone has so many tech products that their cords quickly become tangled, making desk space a disaster. Not with these cable clips, though. They’re an easy way to keep chargers, headphones, and all your other cords and cables securely in place.

Amazon

They come with an adhesive back, so you can stick them on any flat surface—desks, monitors, floors, walls, or wherever you want to feed your cord through. They come in a set of six, so you can cord-inate your entire desk however you like and nothing’ll get in your way. No more cord catastrophes!

6. The perfect place for all of your heated styling products.

You’re in a rush to get out of the house, but your curling iron is still hot. You can’t wait for it to cool down and you don’t want to leave it out. That’s where this basket comes in. It safely holds your styling tools, hot or cold.

Amazon

Its three slots are perfect for the three holy grail heat styling tools: hair straightener, blow dryer, and curling iron. Because it’s made of steel, you can stick hot tools in there without worry. And it’s perfect for bathrooms with limited sink counter space because you can mount it on the wall right by your mirror.

7. This stand will keep your beauty sponge clean and dry.

Beauty blenders get gross enough without the excess product that gets on them when they sit in your makeup bag. And if you’re a germophobe, we don’t recommend looking at videos where people cut open their old, nasty beauty blenders. It’s not good.

Amazon

Let’s be clear: You should wash your beauty sponge. This holder is perfect for holding your beauty sponge to dry it off or just keeping it in a more hygienic spot. You don’t want that broken eyeshadow palette getting all over it, so when you’re at home, might as well give the sponge its own little space.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Sunmore-Blender-Drying-Rack-Sponges-Organizer/dp/B01NCQGR58″]Get it on Amazon for $5.99 [/link-button]

8. Clean up your underwear drawer once and for all.

Socks and underwear are notoriously difficult to keep tidy, hence that drawer is usually a disaster. This honeycomb organizer will solve all your underwear drawer woes so you don’t have to hunt around for the specific pair you’re looking for anymore.

Amazon

Each organizer has 18 slots, and it comes with four organizers, so you’ll have 72 slots to work with if you order this set. With that many storage spaces, you don’t have to limit yourself to socks and underwear. Tuck away any little clothing items that tend to get lost in the abyss of your dresser drawers.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Evelots-Honeycomb-Drawer-Organizers-White/dp/B079SJ8NWP”]Get it on Amazon for $14.99 [/link-button]

9. There’s a better place for all of those grocery bags stuffed under your sink.

Everyone should do their part to be environmentally conscious, which means stashing their plastic bags to use later rather than throwing them away.

Amazon

To reuse and recycle in an organized manner, keep your plastic shopping bags in this sleek dispenser. It can be easily hung on the wall, and the stainless steel finish will blend in with your appliances. Whenever you need a bag, easily pull it out. And when you want to store one, simply shove it through the top.

10. This is the organizer that every aspiring beauty guru needs.

If you’re sick of digging through your makeup bag or you’re just overwhelmed by how messy your bathroom counter is getting, maybe it’s time to consider a different way to store your makeup. This makeup organizer from Amazon could be the solution you’re looking for.

Amazon

It has spots for everything from brushes to lipstick tubes to foundation and adjustable levels to fit different size products. It also rotates for easy access to products. Plus, since your makeup will be on display, it’ll finally pay off if you bought products based on pretty packaging, which, let’s face it, we’ve all done.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/DreamGenius-Organizer-360-Degree-Adjustable-Multi-Function/dp/B074QGYDT4″]Get it on Amazon for $22.99 [/link-button]

11. If your spices are all over the place, it’s time to get this spice rack.

If you’re keeping all your spices on a random shelf in your pantry, you’ve probably had the experience of hunting all over for the one spice you need only to have to leave it out of a recipe because you couldn’t find it.

Amazon

If this sounds familiar (and you’ve observed your cooking is tasting little lackluster), it’s time to invest in a well-organized spice rack. This one’s revolving function and labeled lids make the spices much easier to find. As a bonus, when you first order it, the spice jars come full of their respective spices. With this bad boy, you can unlock your true cooking potential.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008WQ3L”]Get it on Amazon for $40.08 [/link-button]

12. This pan organizer will keep your cookware in line, literally.

When the drawer under the stove just isn’t cutting it, this pan and pot lid organizer will help. You can set it up vertically or horizontally, depending on what kind of space you’re working with, then just slide in whatever pans and lids you want to store.

Amazon

Rather than have to hear that terrible clank every time you get a pan or lid from that awful drawer, easily pull them out from this rack, no loud clattering required.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/SimpleHouseware-Kitchen-Cabinet-Pantry-Organizer/dp/B01K07MZPK”]Get it on Amazon for $14.97 [/link-button]

13. A place to put your vitamins and supplements.

Between all the vitamins, prescriptions, and over-the-counter meds, medicine bottles can take up a lot of space, but these products aren’t exactly something we can just get rid of. One medicine cabinet might be enough, but it’s usually not (and some bathrooms don’t even have one to begin with).

Amazon

Since it seems like everyone keeps a variety of drugstore pain relievers and vitamins on hand, this expandable shelf is perfect for providing extra medicine bottle storage. It’s three tiers high and can expand up to 20 inches, depending on how much space you have on your counter or vanity and how many bottles you need to set up on it.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/mDesign-Expandable-Vitamin-Organizer-Bathroom/dp/B071DQDKB6″]Get it on Amazon for $19.99 [/link-button]

14. Yes, you should organize your mops and brooms.

It only makes sense that the tools you use to clean your house are stored in a tidy way. This mop and broom holder will keep everything upright and in place—no more leaning things up precariously in a sad corner.

Amazon

Mount it on the wall in your garage or laundry room, then you can easily stick the handles in the slots. Now there won’t be an excuse if anyone claims they can’t clean because they don’t know where the supplies are. Nice try.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Home-position-solutions-organizer-shelving/dp/B00EJU3SWY”]Get it on Amazon for $11.99 [/link-button]

15. There’s a new way to organize and display your sunglasses collection.

Sunglasses notoriously either break or get lost, which sucks because they’re also a super fashionable and functional accessory. This sunglasses organizer will prevent both of those scenarios.

Amazon

It looks like a store display, so your sunglasses can make a statement on and off your head. It’s also a nice excuse to buy some designer pairs to show off. BRB, going to Sunglass Hut.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Whitewashed-Barnwood-Sunglasses-Display-Tabletop/dp/B075786B2F”]Get it on Amazon for $22.99 [/link-button]

16. Keep all your clips, ponytail holders, and bobby pins stored and separated.

Do you just throw ponytail holders in a plastic bag? Not cute and not functional. What about bobby pins (which always seem to run out, even though you buy them in packs of 300)? We might not be able to save all the bobby pins and hair ties, but we can at least try to minimize our losses.

Amazon

Keep all your hair accessories tucked away and in one place with this box. Each compartment can be for a designated product, so no more digging through purses and drawers for extra bobby pins and ponytail holders. You’ll know exactly where they are.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/mDesign-Accessories-Organizer-Bathroom-Headbands/dp/B01C9F0MY2″]Get it on Amazon for $14.99 [/link-button]

17. Untangle your necklaces once and for all.

Putting dainty necklace in a jewelry box just does not work. You’re pretty much guaranteeing they’ll become super tangled up, potentially to a point of no return. That’s a real bummer, especially if they’re sentimental or expensive necklaces, which a lot of dainty ones are.

Amazon

This rack will keep all of those pretty necklaces nice and separated. Just carefully hang them on the hooks, and unless some serious gusts of wind happen indoors, you can trust they won’t get all twisted up. There’s extra storage space for watches, rings, and other chunkier pieces too.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Hanging-Jewelry-Organizer-Necklace-Bracelet/dp/B01DNI0DXO”]Get it on Amazon for $19.90 [/link-button]

18. We’ve got a storage solution for all your undergarments.

If your dresser is just a complete mess, this set has spaces for all of those small items that are difficult to organize.

Amazon

Ever wonder how you’re supposed to store your bras? Stack them up in a cube specially designated for that exact purpose, or fold them over and place them in the rectangular bin. The smaller compartments are perfect for socks, underwear, and rolled-up tees and tanks.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Magicfly-Organizer-Underwear-Collapsible-Clothing/dp/B075GJL1X9″]Get it on Amazon for $13.99 [/link-button]

19. Too many teas? Organize them!

Tea tins can be cute and all, but throwing a bunch of teas in there doesn’t make it easy to find the specific tea you’re looking for. As fun as it is to root through a tin to find your decaffeinated green tea, there’s a better option for tea storage.

Amazon

With this teastand, you can sort your Earl Grey from your chamomile and easily choose whatever tea you’re feeling that day. It can hold more than 100 tea bags, so even the most avid tea drinker will have enough storage.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/YouCopia-Teastand-100-Organizer-White/dp/B015JF78TQ”]Get it on Amazon for $24.99 [/link-button]

20. Finally, find a home for your LaCroix.

Soda can boxes can mess up the whole aesthetic of a fridge, plus they’re just not that functional. They never open as advertised, and it’s hard to tell how many you have left.

Amazon

With this beverage dispenser, you can put all of your LaCroix or soft drinks in one place and easily pull them out. Plus, you’ll always see how many you have left so you know when you need to restock. Because running out of LaCroix is not acceptable.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Pack-SimpleHouseware-Stackable-Beverage-Dispenser/dp/B06ZZ3L8GN”]Get it on Amazon for $18.87 [/link-button]

21. You’ll love these adorable jars for cotton balls, Q-tips, and whatever other little items are in your bathroom.

All of the itty-bitty items in bathrooms make organization quite difficult. Apothecary jar sets like these simplify storing those small bathroom necessities. Pick the finish that matches your bathroom best, then fill them up with whatever you want.

Amazon

It comes in a pack of three, so you can designate each one for a specific item. Obsessed with micellar water? Pack one with cotton pads. Big fan of baths? Fill one with Epsom salts or bath bombs. They’re practical and versatile.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/mDesign-Bathroom-Storage-Organizer-Canister/dp/B077YZNNV3″]Get it on Amazon for $19.99[/link-button]

22. Stack all of your makeup palettes with ease.

Makeup palettes often don’t fit in cosmetic bags, so do you just leave them out on your vanity or sink? No! You probably spent some serious coin on those, and they should be treated with care. With new palettes dropping all the time, you need lots of space too, because you shouldn’t have to pass on the next Urban Decay Naked palette if you really want it.

Amazon

The solution? Stack them in this organizer, which can sit vertically or horizontally depending on your preference. It has eight compartments that can fit compacts or palettes big and small. And since it’s clear, you can see the palette you want to reach for.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/FAJ-Acrylic-Organizer-Tier/dp/B0779K7JCN”]Get it on Amazon for $22.50 [/link-button]

23. Keep all of your belts in one place.

Belts are one of those clothing items that don’t have obvious storage place (until you buy this belt hanger, that is).

Amazon

Hook them on this hanger then hook the hanger in your closet, so when you need a belt, they’re all right there. Hang it next to your pants so you can see your color options and pick an outfit accordingly.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TI17ED8″]Get it on Amazon for $11.97 [/link-button]

24. Replace your old hamper with this color-separating option.

It can be tempting not to separate our laundry when we’re feeling lazy—even more so when it’s in a big pile in a hamper. Really though, we should always be keeping our lights, darks, and whites away from each other in the wash, and we always regret not doing it when our clothes get ruined.

Amazon

Put this three-bag sorter in your laundry room and when you bring your laundry down, sort it right then and there. With the sorting already done, you’ll be sure you’re doing your laundry right.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-LAU-006-3-Bag-Laundry-Sorter/dp/B073P2LH2V”]Get it on Amazon for $34.99 [/link-button]

25. Give your boots their own space.

Boots take up a lot of space (too much space), and you can’t set them on a standard shoe rack. If you’ve got a decent amount of tall boots, it’s probably time to invest in a boot organizer.

Amazon

Amazon

Put apples in the top and oranges on the bottom. Or if you’re a veggie lover, keep your vegetables separate from your fruit. The important thing is that there won’t be any fruit overflow.

36. A Vinegar That’s Not for Your Salad

Vinegar is a favorite cleaning ingredient among people who want a strong, versatile scrubbing agent that’s derived from natural sources. But rather than reaching for the standard apple cider vinegar in your kitchen cabinet, why not go for something a bit more intense, like the Green Gobbler Ultimate Vinegar Home & Garden Concentrate?

HealthyWay
Amazon

It promises six times the power of standard vinegar, and can be used as a stain-lifter, odor-eliminator, all-purpose cleaner, and a polisher. Is there anything vinegar can’t clean? We don’t think so.

38. The Earth-Friendly Way to Deal With Pet Hair

Why not switch to a one-and-done solution, like the Sticky Buddy Reusable Lint Roller? It picks up crumbs, hair, dust, and other particles from all kinds of fabric.

HealthyWay
Amazon

And once you’re done cleaning, there’s no need to fumble around, trying to find the end of the roll. Simply wash away the debris, dry it off, and Sticky Buddy regains that sticky factor.

10 Tiny Houses You Can Buy On Amazon And 33 Things To Put In And Around Them

If the minimalist lifestyle has always appealed to you and the concept of living in a tiny house piques your interest, we’re here to help you explore your options.
You can actually purchase buildings on Amazon that can be converted into the small, simple living spaces we’ve come to call “tiny houses,” but there’s more to a tiny house than just the building. Strategic planning of furniture, storage, and decor is a must. Here’s everything you need to get started in style on your little big adventure—and turn that tiny house into a tiny home.

If you appreciate indoor plumbing as much as we do, be prepared to put forth a little extra elbow grease. Most of these buildings will require self-setup of electricity, plumbing, and insulation.

Tiny Buildings to Call Home

1. For the Eager Adventurer

The Allwood Pioneer cabin will make the perfect first tiny home for those eager to get it built and start furnishing and decorating. Setup only takes a few days, and although this tiny home is especially tiny at 171 square feet (about 19 feet long and 9 feet wide), it has a lot to offer when it comes to aesthetics.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s made from Nordic spruce wood, which offers it a simple and minimalist feel, both front and side windows will bring in plenty of natural light, and the small front porch could fit a little bench or two for peaceful morning coffee and meditation time. Insulation is separate from the kit but can be added.

Get it on Amazon for $7,495.

2. For the True Minimalist

Although the DuraMAX Flat Top Insulated Building appears industrial and plain at first glance, it can be painted with any paint that adheres to vinyl to make it feel a bit more like (tiny) home. At 13 by 10 feet, it is for the true minimalist who is ready to make some real sacrifices in the name of simplicity.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This building includes fire-resistant insulation, a metal foundation that allows it to be built on any flat surface, a front door with a deadbolt lock, and a gutter system. And if this particular structure is a bit too tiny, you can purchase extension kits in 40-inch increments.
Get it on Amazon for $3,625.99.

3. For Those Hesitant to Commit

The Allwood Mayflower looks like what I imagine the little house on the prairie looked like. Its wagon-inspired structure gives this tiny house on wheels a beautifully unique style that would be perfect to put in a large garden or meadow if you have a little extra property.

HealthyWay
Amazon

I wouldn’t recommend the Allwood Mayflower as a forever tiny home, but rather, a place for those who’d like to dabble with the idea. Perhaps it could be used as a small getaway cabin or little backyard hideaway. At 117 tiny square feet, this super small structure will be quick to build and furnish, and the two wall-height windows, door windows, and windows on both sides will bring in a ton of natural light. Added bonus: It comes with two adorable flower boxes beneath each front window.

Get it on Amazon for $7,590.

4. For Those Who Like Their Space

At 209 square feet, the Allwood Claudia model is a little more spacious than most other truly tiny options. The front and back walls are a little over 7 feet tall, and the ridge of the roof offers more space in the middle at a height of almost 12 feet.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This would be the perfect structure in which to build a small loft, with a sleeping area above and lounging area below.
Get it on Amazon for $7,990.

5. For Those Who Want (Remote) Control

The Weizhengheng expandable flat pack prefab module container house with solar energy is like a house from the future. The house expands and folds automatically with a hydraulic system via the click of a remote—and it comes fully furnished with a bathroom (shower and toilet), kitchen, bedroom, dining table, and air conditioner. Plus, it’s solar powered.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This is perfect for anyone who wants to build a tiny home without lifting more than a finger. And because the hydraulic system both expands and folds the structure, it offers the flexibility of moving from place to place with ease.
Get it on Amazon for $24,800.

6. For the Contemporary Artist

Not everyone wants to put their tiny house in the middle of the woods somewhere far, far away from civilization, and this tiny house would look perfectly at home in any contemporary urban setting.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The chic, simple design offers a tiny-house life without the roughing-it feel, and large windows lining the front corner of the structure offer plenty of natural light. (But if you’ll be putting it in the city, we suggest getting curtains.) Assembly is estimated to take one full day for two adults. If the 146 square feet inside feel a little too cramped for you, Amazon sells larger versions of the structure as well.
Get it on Amazon for $7,590.

7. For the Ultimate Party Host

The Allwood Bella cabin has a covered patio area off the front that is just the right size for a few pieces of patio furniture such as a table and chairs or a porch swing. This is the tiny house to invest in if you love to entertain guests.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The structure also offers a bit more space than most of the others, with 237 square feet inside plus the 86-square-foot loft. The simple elegance of this tiny home will keep both you and your guests comfortable.
Get it on Amazon for $17,800.

8. For the Minimalist on the Move

The Cozumel APH-536 tiny home is like an upscale tiny house and an RV combined. These 399 beautiful square feet include a covered front porch, living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom—and unlike the other options, plenty of storage space is included.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This building is made for easy transport on a flatbed trailer and is perfect for a vacation home or an everyday one.
Get it on Amazon for $64,900.

9. For the Extravagance-Seeking Adventurer

The Allwood Eagle Vista cabin has more space than any of the other options, with an impressive 1,336 square feet. Ready to be even more impressed?

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s two floors. That’s right, the Eagle Vista has an upstairs and a downstairs, each with plenty of room for your fab decor. Complete with lots of windows and a covered patio area, this cabin is more like a Tiny Mansion than a Tiny House, but we can’t all be minimalists, after all.
Get it on Amazon for $64,650.

10. For Those Who Are Ready for Anything

This Weizhengheng expandable container house with solar energy is made with galvanized steel to protect against strong elements. It’s also waterproof, fireproof, wind-resistant up to level-11 winds, and anti-seismic up to level-9 quakes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The container house appears boxy and plain at first, but it unfolds and expands into a beautiful space that would be easy to call home.
Get it on Amazon for $25,800.

Natural Mosquito Repellents: Do They Really Work?

By numbers alone, the mosquito is the deadliest animal on the planet. They spread diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, Zika virus, and West Nile virus.
Even if you’re not worried about diseases, there’s no reason to put up with the tiny little bloodsuckers. They’re incredibly annoying, and for most people, itchy red bumps are reason enough to invest in bug spray. Few things can ruin a picnic as quickly as mosquitoes.

So what we can do? Are there natural alternatives to products loaded with DEET and other synthetic chemicals? Can we really load up on certain houseplants to reduce our exposure to bug bites? And do those citronella torches really work?
We spoke with Joe Conlon, the technical advisor of the American Mosquito Control Association, to find out how we can banish mosquitoes from our homes once and for all.

Is DEET a safe mosquito repellent (and how does it compare to alternatives)?

“Let’s face it,” Conlon tells HealthyWay, “DEET is the gold standard by which all other repellents are judged. It’s by far the most prevalent repellent out there.”
N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, better known as DEET, is a synthetic chemical that seems to work by blocking the receptors in mosquitoes’ antennae. They’re then unable to locate humans and therefore unable to bite us.
“There are over 500 DEET products that are registered by the EPA,” Conlon says. “If you’re going to go the DEET route, I would suggest a 25 to 30 percent formulation. That’s both repellent for ticks and mosquitoes. And that will give you a good solid four to eight hours of protection.”

If you’re worried about the safety of DEET, you’re not alone. In the early 2000s, several reports indicated that young children were having seizures when exposed to products with high concentrations of DEET. A 2003 study found no evidence of toxicity, however, and concluded that “the suggestion that young children are more prone than adults to the neurotoxic effects of DEET is not supported by critical evaluation of existing evidence.”

If you’re wondering about using DEET during pregnancy, that too appears to be safe. One study followed pregnant women in Thailand who used DEET; it found no adverse effects in the women or in the babies. More recently, a 2013 study found no evidence that DEET was dangerous to humans in typical concentrations.
The scientific consensus on DEET’s safety is pretty clear, but we’ve got another issue with it: It feels weird and smells bad.
“In the past, DEET has had some cosmetic issues,” Conlon admits. “The manufacturers have seen this as an issue, and there are formulations that don’t have any of those bad cosmetic things anymore. But some people just don’t like it—and that’s fine.”

Conlon says that another synthetic ingredient offers similar mosquito protection: picaridin. While it’s not a natural mosquito repellent, it’s pretty close.
“It’s the most widely sold repellent in the world outside of the United States, and it’s very good,” Conlon explains. “It’s got a very light feel, it doesn’t smell bad, and it’s a synthetic derivative of pepper plants, so that’s kind of an organic pedigree. I’d suggest that your readers look for products with a 15 to 20 percent formulation of picaridin.”
Research indicates that picaridin is roughly as effective as DEET, although the authors noted that different mosquito species might respond differently to varying active ingredients.

Natural Mosquito Repellents: What to Know About Alternatives to DEET

Let’s say that you want to avoid DEET simply because you don’t like it, and you’re looking for some sort of completely natural mosquito repellent. That’s perfectly fine, but most of the natural repellents approved by the EPA aren’t quite as effective. The good news: If you’re willing to reapply your repellent every once in a while, you can get the same basic effect.
“Citronella oil is repellent, a bona fide repellent,” Conlon says, “but it’s a mild repellent. The current formulations out on the market give you about one hour of protection. And that’s one hour more than you’ll get if you don’t use any type of protection, but I’m afraid it’s far poorer than anything you would get with any of the other [active ingredients] that are marketed.”
One study found that citronella oil could work for up to two hours—which really isn’t great, all things considered. Unfortunately, that same study found citronella oil to be a more effective option than various other essential oils. Patchouli and clove oil provided similar levels of protection, but before you start building your own DIY natural mosquito repellent with those substances, remember: Natural doesn’t mean safer.
“Clove oil is a repellent if you get purified oil, and it will repel mosquitoes,” Conlon says. “At that purified level, it doesn’t smell like cloves, [but] it will burn a hole right through your skin. It’s extremely corrosive. A lot of nefarious groups will market these chemical concoctions that contain clove oil and say, ‘It’s a known repellent of mosquitoes.’ Well, that’s true, but not at the concentration they’re using.'”
It’s not all bad news for naturopaths. Oil of lemon eucalyptus is a useful natural alternative, although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that parents shouldn’t use it on children 3 years of age or younger.

“DIY mosquito repellents that use oil of lemon eucalyptus as one of their main ingredients will be the most [effective], since the oil is almost as effective as 25 percent DEET,” says Karen Thompson, editor of pest control blog InsectCop. “However, since lemon eucalyptus mosquito repellents work for no more than six hours, depending on their potency, you’ll need to reapply often. I’d advise reapplying this type of insect repellent every two to three hours.”

Thompson recommends mixing oil of lemon eucalyptus with a neutral oil (such as soybean or olive oil) and alcohol. To reiterate, though, this natural repellent isn’t appropriate for young children. Test for sensitivities before spraying it all over your skin by putting a small amount on your wrist or another non-sensitive area.
Conlon notes that oil of lemon eucalyptus isn’t technically as effective as DEET, but he still thinks it’s a valid alternative.
“I’m not quite sure people could tell a difference,” he says. “There’s a difference in, maybe, 86 percent repellency versus 95 percent repellency. Whether a person could notice that or not, it’s difficult to say. But it’s a natural alternative for people who want a natural product.”
Catnip oil is also effective, but only when refined and concentrated.
“There’s a formulation of catnip oil called refined oil of Nepeta cataria,” Conlon says. “It’ll give you seven hours of protection… I’ve never used it myself, but it’s a bona fide repellent registered by the EPA.”
Conlon says that the USDA is currently looking at breadfruit—apparently, its smoke is an excellent repellent—and other natural repellents, but currently, there’s not many tried-and-tested options.
“There’s a huge amount of research going on to find natural insecticides and natural repellents because the public is really looking for them,” he says. “Whether we’re ever going to be able to find [a perfect natural mosquito repellent], I don’t know. …A lot of people are under the impression that nature has provided us with the answer. Nature might—but there’s no evolutionary pressure for plants to produce something like that.”

Get rid of mosquitoes around your house.

We were excited to read about natural mosquito-repellent plants, so we asked Conlon what we should start planting.
Unfortunately, he says that “there aren’t any plants that are going to provide any level of protection at all. Citronella, which is effective, is derived from [different species of lemongrass], but you have to crush the leaves in order to get the oils out.”

As for lemongrass, Conlon says, “If you plant lemongrass all over your yard, you’re not really going to repel anything. The wind currents will waft off any volatilization of the chemicals inside the plants. Unfortunately, there’s no silver bullet in that regard.”
For a second opinion, we asked Thompson to weigh in.
“Plants like lemongrass, lavender, basil, marigolds, garlic, and peppermint will be unpleasant for mosquitoes, and therefore, they will be less likely to visit the area where these plants grow,” she says. “But these mosquito-repelling plants don’t automatically mean no mosquitoes.”
In other words, planting these types of plants won’t hurt your cause, but it probably won’t help much, either.
Well, at least we’ve got those citronella torches. Speaking of which—do those things actually work? Sort of.
Citronella oil is a real repellent, but Conlon says that commercial citronella oil candles don’t contain enough of the substance to do much of anything. Any sort of smoke will drive mosquitoes away, but you’ll have to be fairly close to the flame to enjoy any benefit.
A better option is a simple house fan, which will blow the weak-flying insects away while dissipating the carbon dioxide and chemical signals from your body, effectively masking you.

Easy Ways to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Besides plants, there are a few things you can do around your backyard to keep it skeeter-free—or at least less enticing for them.
“Obviously, drain any type of standing water,” Conlon says. “If you have ditches that fill with water, make sure that they’re clean, so that the water flows freely. Mosquitoes will not lay their eggs in water that’s flowing, but stagnant water is fair game for them.”
He continues, “If you’ve got low-lying areas on your property that fill with water after heavy rains, it’d be good to fill those in because there are mosquitoes that breed specifically in those kinds of low-lying depressions. They lay their eggs in the dirt, and when the water comes and covers them, they hatch. They can withstand a drought for three to five years.”
Look for containers with standing water and empty them out. Don’t worry about putting insecticides in them, but wipe down the sides and clean them with soap and water; some mosquito species lay eggs just above the waterline, so thoroughly scraping the sides of a container will help to prevent infestations.
“It takes a minimum of five days for a mosquito to go from an egg to an adult,” Conlon says. “If you empty containers every five days, you’re good to go.”
Check evaporation pans, leaky faucets, and any other place where water might build up over time. Mosquitoes don’t need much water to do their thing.
“When I was in South America doing research, I found Aedes aegypti, the Zika mosquito, breeding in Coke bottle caps,” Conlon says. “It’s incredible. You’ve got to have a lot of respect for mosquitoes.”
Once you’ve eliminated standing water, look for ways to prevent the skeeters from making their way into your home.
“People should maintain their window screens,” Conlon says. “If you’ve got any vents to the outside, bathroom vents, things like that, I would suggest putting some hardware cloth or screening over the vent on the outside. Mosquitoes can and will get in through those vents. They’ve done it in my house—I learned the hard way.”
Getting completely skeeter-free will require multiple steps: Carefully evaluate your home and yard, try out different repellents, and use traps and zappers to reduce mosquito populations around your area.
If you’re sticking with natural products, research them carefully. Conlon recommends following EPA guidelines when protecting yourself from mosquitoes.
“Some of the nastiest diseases on the planet are a seven-hour plane flight away,” he says. “Zika and West Nile virus should’ve convinced us that we need to be prepared for diseases for which we have no historical antecedent. People need to be very serious in terms of what they’re using in terms of mosquito control methods and repellents. That’s why I say stick with the EPA. Stick with the stuff that we know, because it could be a matter of life or death.”
