38 Of Oprah’s All-Time Favorite Things You Never Knew You Needed Until Now, All Under $50

Thanksgiving is the unofficial beginning to the holiday season; between stuffing ourselves Joey Tribbiani–style and spending time with loved ones, it truly is a wonderful time of year. But one of the things we look forward to the most at Thanksgiving? Oprah’s annual list of her favorite products.
From the 1990s to the mid-2000s, you could find us, along with most of America, glued to our televisions at 4 p.m. during the week of Thanksgiving, waiting anxiously on Oprah to unveil her list of favorite things to a very lucky audience, who received all of the items on her list. Even after the show ended in 2011, Oprah has continued to publish her annual list of favorite products. It’s not quite the same as being in the studio audience as Oprah gleefully screams, “YOU GET A CAR,” but there are still some primo products on the list each year.

The 2018 list hasn’t yet been published, but here’s a look back at a few of Oprah’s all-time favorite things from years past. You’re going to want every single one, and at under $50 each, they won’t break the bank.

1. Never break your sunnies again with this travel case.

These padded zipper bags are a perfect way to give fragile items, like glasses and compacts, a little extra protection when traveling. In a punchy pink color with navy trim and a printed interior, this puffy, lined bag is machine-washable, super lightweight, and ultra durable.

Throw the CORROON Women’s Sungkay Puffy Kit into your suitcase when traveling, and you’ll never have to worry about airlines breaking your expensive bronzer or favorite sunglasses again.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075TF93NW”]CORROON Women’s Sungkay Puffy Kit, $35 on Amazon[/link-button]

2. You had me at Zendaya.

The Greatest Showman, featuring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and our girl Zendaya, wasn’t a box office smash when it opened in theaters last year, but it’s quickly become a favorite among musical lovers, and for good reason. The catchy lyrics of tunes like “A Million Dreams” will stay in your head for days.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Get the original motion picture soundtrack on Amazon and relive the true story of P.T. Barnum, the man who invented show business, through song. After all, there’s no business like show business, especially when you’re belting out show tunes in the shower.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07629RLTC”]The Greatest Showman Soundtrack, $11.88 on Amazon[/link-button]

3. Look like a lumberjack with these cozy socks—no wood-chopping required.

Winter is coming, people! Cozy up in style with these Pudus Classic Slipper Socks that come in sizes for the whole family.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Lined with soft sherpa fleece and non-slip grippers on the sole, these socks are the perfect accessory for cold days spent in front of the fireplace with a good book and a mug of hot cocoa in hand. And, if you’re not into the lumberjack look, there are multiple style options from which to choose.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B541VIY”]Pudus Classic Slipper Socks, Lumberjack Red, from $10.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

4. Treat your pupper to some gourmet snacks this holiday season.

It’s no secret that Oprah loves her dog, Luke—just check out her Instagram feed. Oprah regularly treats her pupper to gourmet snacks and toys from Harry Barker, which has been a regular on her favorite things list for several years.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This Harry Barker Gift Set features a durable gingham rope chew toy and a box of country bacon dog treats, all in a cute-as-a-button decorative tin that can be used to store more treats in later.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075TS9T51″]Harry Barker Gift Set, $35 on Amazon[/link-button]

5. Relax like Oprah with this bath-time treat.

Okay, Oprah is probably not trying to take a bath in an apartment-sized tub, but you can still relax like a queen with this LoLLIA Dream Bubble Bath. Not only does it come in a gorgeous, totally display-worth bottle, but the white tea and honeysuckle scent is divine.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This bubble bath is best enjoyed with a good book (may we suggest Oprah’s own The Wisdom of Sundays: Life-Changing Insights From Super Soul Conversations?), scented candles, and a cup of hot tea to set the mood.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5M2PRT”]LoLLIA Dream Bubble Bath, $43.33 on Amazon[/link-button]

6. Say bye-bye to chilly fingers with this tech-friendly product.

Every year, winter gloves seem to disappear to the same mysterious place where lost socks and hair ties end up, never to be heard from again. But with Verloop Trio gloves, you’ll never have to worry about finding a spare, because each set comes with a pair of gloves and a spare, just in case—pure genius.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Plus, each set of Verloop gloves is touchscreen capable, meaning no more chilly hands every time you need to check a text or hail a ride share.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Verloop-Touchscreen-Gloves-Texting-Knitted/dp/B01M0DV4R8″]Verloop Trio Touchscreen Gloves, $11.49 on Amazon[/link-button]

7. This handy gadget always knows where to find your keys, even if you don’t.

You hit snooze one too many times in the morning and barely have time to grab a cup of coffee before running out the door, much less take 20 minutes to find your keys, which you could have sworn were hanging on their special hook by the door. Never lose your keys again with the Orbit Bluetooth key tracker; simply attach the tracker to your keyring and download the app.

HealthyWay
Amazon

With just one tap, the Orbit tracker will play a loud tune until you locate your keys. If you’re not sure where you lost your keys, the app can also tell you the tracker’s last known GPS location. You’ll never be late because you were looking for your keys again. The only downside to the Orbit Bluetooth Key Finder? It can’t stop you from hitting snooze (again).

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Orbit-Bluetooth-Finder-Azure-Blue/dp/B01LKBK3U4/”]Orbit Bluetooth Key Finder, Azure Blue, $24.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

8. Oprah, how does your garden grow?

Eating veggies you grew yourself is extra delicious, but if you live in a city, garden spots are hard to come by. Featured on Oprah’s favorite hings in 2016, the Urban Agriculture Vegetable Garden Grow Kit has everything you need—a container, soil, and seeds—to grow your own lettuce year round.

HealthyWay
Amazon

For delicious salad greens all year long, all you need to provide is a sunny window and water to watch your garden grow.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Urban-Agriculture-Vegetable-Garden-Grow/dp/B01G96AWTM/”]Vegetable Garden Grow Kit – Lettuce, $18.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

9. Take selfies that rival Kylie Jenner’s.

Kylie might be the queen of selfies, but you don’t need your own specially lit selfie station to take glam photos; all you need is this Oprah-approved LuMee Selfie Case. Designed to fit most iPhones, this pretty rose gold case features warm LED lights that highlight your face for the perfect selfie every time.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Each case is durable, with shock-absorbing corners for when you inevitably drop your phone looking for the perfect angle. The lights have up to 30 minutes of battery life, and this product includes a charging cable for selfies on the go.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/LuMee-Selfie-Lighting-Variable-Absorption/dp/B01M04AV4H”]LuMee Phone Case with LED Lighting, $24.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

10. Faux furs for your dog? Why not?

Featured on Oprah’s Favorite Things in 2015, this totally adorable, totally over-the-top faux fur jacket is just what your pup needs for cold-weather outings.

HealthyWay

Sized to fit even the smallest of pooches, this eye-catching faux-mink garment will ensure you have the best-dressed dog on the block, even though you may still be schlepping around in the snow in your trusty old puffer coat.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Frontgate-Faux-Jacket-Channeled-Large/dp/B016DVNVP0/”]FRONTGATE Faux Fur Pet Jacket, $33 on Amazon[/link-button]

11. You’ll want to stock up on these ultra-soft baby basics.

Organic baby clothes are good for the environment, and these come in oh-so-sweet colors and sizes for little ones. Burt’s Bees organic clothing has been a favorite of Oprah’s for years, and way back in 2013, she featured the Bee Essentials Bibs as must-haves for every mom.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They’re snap- and velcro-free, and they slide gently over baby’s head for no-fuss drool protection. We also love the terry cloth backing, which can easily be swiped over baby’s mouth and hands for post-meal cleanup.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Burts-Bees-Baby-Essentials-Shoulder/dp/B00N4PMNH6″]Burt’s Bees Baby Shoulder Bibs, $19.95 on Amazon[/link-button]

12. This stuff is better than butter.

You know, $25 seems like a lot to spend on butter—but this is no ordinary breakfast spread. Back in 2012, Oprah raved about Urbani Truffle Butter, saying, “How do I love truffle butter? Let me count the ways. On a baked potato, on grilled steak, on a sourdough baguette.”

HealthyWay
Amazon

According to Amazon reviewers, the trick to using Urbani White Truffle Butter is adding a small sliver of the butter to dishes right before serving to ensure the rich, velvety truffle flavor comes through.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Urbani-White-Truffle-Butter-8oz/dp/B00A4FQE38″]Urbani White Truffle Butter, 8 ounces, $25.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

13. Sip on a cup of chai, just like Oprah.

Oprah loves chai tea so much that Teavana and Starbucks teamed up to name a special blend of chai after her. Masala chai makes Oprah’s list of favorite things year after year.

HealthyWay
Amazon

With milk, this sweetened, spicy tea is delicious to enjoy on cool fall mornings, or really any time you need a quick pick-me-up. Use this loose leaf blend with your favorite diffuser, or learn how to make masala chai the Oprah way.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Rishi-Masala-Tea-Organic-Loose/dp/B007PY1BM0″]Rishi Masala Chai Tea, Loose Leaf Black Tea Blend, $29.93 on Amazon[/link-button]

14. La petite cocotte, s’il vous plaît.

Oprah loves to serve mashed potatoes and other casserole-type dishes in mini cast iron cocottes so much that she listed them as one of her favorite things in 2011, 2014, and 2017.

HealthyWay
Amazon

While she favors Le Creuset and Staub for her cocottes, those brands aren’t so budget-friendly. Instead, serve individual casseroles just like Oprah with these affordable Nordic Ware Mini Cocottes. Made of cast aluminum with a nonstick surface inside, these cocottes ensure even cooking and easy cleanup, making them an ideal choice for your next dinner party.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Traditions-Cocottes-Cranberry/dp/B008XGXWKI”]Nordic Ware Mini Cocottes, Set of 2, $34.34 on Amazon[/link-button]

15. We hate to tell you this, but 2004 called, and it wants its boots back.

If there’s one thing Oprah absolutely loves, it’s Josh Groban Christmas albums—but Ugg boots are a close second. Both have been featured on her lists throughout the years, proving that they’re perennial favorites.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny that Ugg boots are warm, cozy, and downright comfortable. Whether you’re lounging around the house or glamming it up at a ski resort in Tahoe, you’ll be right at home in the Alida Slouch Boot, an Ugg classic that comes in either black or chestnut with Ugg’s trademarked Treadlite outsole for cushiony comfort all day long.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/UGG-Womens-Alida-Slouch-Chestnut/dp/B01MZ9AVW2″]Ugg Women’s Alida Slouch Boot, select styles from $49 on Amazon[/link-button]

16. Yes, this is the best facial moisturizer of all time.

Put down the coconut oil you were about to dab all over your face, and back away slowly. Instead of a product that’s sure to leave you disappointed (and covered in zits), try Oprah’s (and our) favorite facial moisturizer, Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Beloved for years, this lightweight, award-winning moisturizer delivers on its promise to hydrate and improve overall skin texture. And, as an added bonus, it smells absolutely heavenly.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Philosophy-1-qty-Hope-Moisturizer/dp/B000Z5Y2XQ”]Philosophy Hope in a Jar Moisturizer, $32.57 on Amazon[/link-button]

17. Here’s the secret to making the best brownies ever.

Everyone knows that the best brownies are the corner pieces; warm and gooey, with crispy, delicious edges on two sides. With a regular brownie pan, you really have to duke it out over who gets the coveted four corners. But with the Baker’s Edge Brownie Pan, everyone gets an edge piece.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This unique pan features a design that guarantees every piece has two crispy edges. It’s the perfect size for convenient box brownie mixes, and features one continuous chamber for easier filling.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bakers-Edge-Nonstick-Brownie-Pan/dp/B000MMK448″]Baker’s Edge Nonstick Edge Brownie Pan, $35.95 on Amazon[/link-button]

18. It’s a triple word score for the win!

Okay, so technically Oprah’s favorite thing is Hasbro’s Scrabble Premier Wood Edition, which is, with its wooden cabinet, rotating game board, and brass toned tile racks, pretty amazing. Not so amazing? The hefty $199 price tag. Yikes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

If you love the tactile dynamic of playing Scrabble with your friends rather than cheating on Words with Friends (you know you do), then pick up a regular version of Oprah’s favorite game instead. The board may not rotate, but the game is still just as fun.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-A8166-Scrabble-Crossword-Game/dp/B00IL5XY9K”]Hasbro Scrabble Crossword Game, $15.78 on Amazon[/link-button]

19. This is so much better than your average holiday popcorn tin.

After filming her show in Chicago for 25 years, it makes sense that Oprah would include Chicago’s own world-famous Garrett Popcorn on her list of favorite things. And she’s absolutely right; Garrett’s special blend of cheddar and caramel popcorn is delicious, and tastes freshly made right out of the tin.

HealthyWay
Garrett Popcorn

If, for some reason, you don’t love the cheddar and caramel blend, Garrett’s has several other tasty options from which to choose, including Almond and Pecan Caramel Crisp.

[link-button href=”https://www.garrettpopcorn.com/Catalog/Recipes/cheddar-and-caramel-popcorn”]Garrett Popcorn Shops, Garrett Mix, $33 from Garrett Popcorn[/link-button]

20. Guests will love every variety of this scented soap.

Step it up a notch in your spare bathroom—offer guests the luxurious experience of using LAFCO House and Home Bar Soap in scents like Sea and Dune, Sage and Walnut, and Redwood.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Each creamy soap is handmade in Italy and features an ultra-moisturizing blend of olive oil, almond oil, and rice protein. Not just for washing hands, this soap can also be used as a shaving bar and is suitable for sensitive skin.

21. Come on baby, light my fire (with these scented lovelies).

The holidays are just around the corner, and there’s no better way to get into a festive mood than with a fire crackling on a chilly night. Not exactly a Boy Scout? No need to worry, because these scented fire starters make starting a blaze easy.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Simply place a fire starter beneath the logs in your fireplace or grate and light the wick. In a few moments, you’ll have a merry, crackling fire going with a pleasant pine scent. They’re also perfect for getting charcoal grills started and outdoor firepits. Technically these don’t meet our $50 limit, but they’re close enough, so we’re including them.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Christophe-Pourny-Studio-Fire-Starters/dp/B01JH3DNFE/”]Christophe Pourney Studio Scented Fire Starters, $50.58 on Amazon[/link-button]

22. Just roll with it.

There are few things as maddening as painstakingly wrapping your power cords for travel, only to have them unravel and become a tangled mess in your carry-on.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Brouk and Co. solves this problem brilliantly with their travel cord roll, designed to keep up to eight cords firmly in place. Each roll is made of vegan leather and features interior button closures to secure cords and an outer strap to keep the roll tightly closed.

23. Take care of your hair with this must-have brush.

These gorgeous green brushes made Oprah’s list of favorite things back in 2016. This versatile detangling brush can be used on wet or dry hair, and works for almost every hair type. (Read this if you’re not sure what type of hair you have.)

HealthyWay
Amazon

25. Spaghetti night just got so much easier.

Oprah raved about the Bialetti Pasta Pot on her 2016 list, saying, “I took a look at this aluminum cookware with a lock-on lid and built-in strainer and had just one question: Where have you been all my life?” And we have to say, we agree with her.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This pasta pot is a must-have for any home chef who’s been dangerously close to hot steam while straining pasta in a regular colander. The Bialetti comes in a variety of colors, and features stay-cool handles and a locking lid to safely drain pasta every time.

26. Get a load of those peepers!

Swipe on some red lipstick, throw on these shades, and channel your inner Elizabeth Taylor. Peepers’ sunnies and reading glasses have made the list of Oprah’s Favorite Things for the past four years.

HealthyWay
Amazon

We love that the retro, oversized style is flattering on any face, and is perfect for days when your concealer just isn’t cutting it. While Peepers look like expensive designer sunglasses, the price point makes them affordable in almost any budget.

29. Get a precise measurement in the kitchen every time.

Anyone who’s ever seen a Weight Watchers commercial knows it’s no secret that Oprah is very precise about her food, which is why the Taylor Digital Kitchen Scale made the 2017 favorite things list.

HealthyWay
Amazon

If you’re trying to eat healthy, but you’re not sure what a four-ounce serving of chicken really looks like, then you’ll love the digital scale. The bowl can be removed from the scale for easier weighing, and its compact size means it won’t take up a ton of valuable counter space.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075HNYBMQ”]Taylor Digital Kitchen Scale, $49.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

The Complete Guide To Safely Trick-Or-Treating On Halloween

For kids, Halloween is an exciting time. According to one source, about 36.1 million children go trick-or-treating every year—and that’s in the United States alone. It’s our favorite holiday of the year, outside of National Meow Like a Pirate Day, and we certainly don’t want to scare anyone away from the seasonal activities.
However, if you’re a parent, your experience with Halloween likely involves a lot of worrying.  While 93 percent of households consider their neighborhoods to be safe (link opens a PDF), it’s hard to shake the feeling that the holiday is at least slightly dangerous (particularly when you see hundreds of zombies and ghouls roaming your streets).

HealthyWay
iStock.com/FatCamera

The good news is that with proper planning, trick-or-treating is a perfectly safe and fun activity. It’s a good way to get exercise, make memories, and most importantly, get massive amounts of candy from your unsuspecting neighbors.
Here are a few tips for a happy and healthy Halloween, along with a few (hopefully) helpful product suggestions to help you plan for the season.

1. Make sure that your children go out wearing reflective gear.

We’d love to tell you that every driver exercises a little extra caution on Halloween night, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. According to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be fatally struck by a vehicle on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
It’s not too difficult to determine why that’s the case: On Halloween, hundreds of kids walk the streets in the dusk, and drivers have a harder time seeing in low-light conditions. Before your kids head out—hopefully with an adult or an older teenager in tow—teach them to make contact with drivers before crossing the road.

Make sure that they’re not hitting the streets glued to their phones or other electronic devices, which cause an unnecessary distraction (while also limiting them from getting the true Halloween experience, in our opinion).  Remind them that every car is a potential threat, even if it’s parked; many injuries occur when kids dart between parked cars right as drivers are starting to move.
And while this might be somewhat obvious, reflective materials are absolutely essential, even if your kids won’t be trick-or-treating in complete darkness. One study found that reflective materials are most effective when applied to pedestrians’ joints, as opposed to their torsos, but really, the more reflectivity you can build into a costume, the better.

Your kids probably won’t want to wear reflective vests, but fortunately, that’s not necessary. You can get a cheap roll of reflective tape (Gear Aid’s reflective tape, available here on Amazon, is our choice), apply a few strips, and improve the safety of just about any article of clothing.
You might even find ways to use the tape as part of the costume—easy enough if your kid’s going as the Tin Man, slightly more difficult if they’re going as a ghost.

2. Try to incorporate lighter colors into your kid’s costumes.

We know, we know—Halloween’s all about scary stuff, and nobody wants to be a bright-yellow zombie. However, if you can push your kids toward brighter, lighter costumes, you’ll make them significantly more visible on dark streets, limiting their chances of an accident. Choose bright materials and accessories. Even something like a simple LED light bracelet can improve safety dramatically.

iStock.com/SetsukoN

If that’s not ideal, you can look for other ways to bring a little light to your child’s trick-or-treating gear. A glow-in-the-dark candy bucket (here’s a great one with a removable LED) is a great example; they allow you to easily identify your child from a distance, and kids will love the spooky glow. What’s the downside, other than all that extra room for sugar?
Make sure to test the product in question before the big day. Some “reflective” items don’t really reflect that much light, so a quick test run will allow you to accurately gauge the product’s effectiveness (while giving your kid an excuse to put on their costume).

To perform a simple test, have your kid stand in a dark room and shine a decent flashlight past them. You’ll be surprised at how high-quality reflective materials can catch your eye—and you’ll have some additional peace of mind when Halloween rolls around.

3. Keep your trick-or-treater’s eyes clear.

We realize that this may take some of the fun out of Halloween, but masks impede your child’s vision, making an accidental trip much more likely. While older kids can safely wear masks, younger kids should avoid them.
The good news is that you really don’t need masks. Face paint is more fun, and it’s often less expensive. This kit off Amazon uses lab-tested, paraben-free ingredients, and it’s gentle on sensitive skin.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/chameleonseye

Even so, you should always test costume makeup in a small area before applying it to sensitive skin. If you notice any signs of irritation, move to your backup plan. Remember, some products can become more irritating over time, so make sure to remove all makeup and body paint before your child goes to sleep.
If that sounds like a ton of work, you can always choose a costume that leaves your kid’s face exposed; we’ve got rundowns of some excellent options for kids 6 to 12 here, along with a list of toddler costumes here.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/tatyana_tomsickova

If you do decide to use a mask, make sure that your child can see, particularly when it comes to their peripheral vision. Make sure that the mask fits your child’s face, and remind them that it’s okay to flip the mask up while walking (not running) from house to house.
Don’t be afraid to cut the eye holes a bit wider if necessary. While it might feel like you’re ruining the costume, you might actually be saving Halloween.

4. Watch out for costumes with pointy accessories, even if they seem fairly blunt.

“There are sharp objects in particular in pirate costumes or swords for Star Wars costumes,” Marie Crandall, MD, told News 4 regarding dangerous costume components. “Another big risk is eye injuries, and you don’t want to wear an eye patch after Halloween.”
For that matter, you don’t really want to wear an eye patch during Halloween, since it can seriously inhibit depth perception, but we get her point: Sharp accessories are a serious no-no, even if they make a costume look more authentic.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/kokouu

For what it’s worth, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that costume accessories “should be short, soft, and flexible.” Foam products certainly fit into that description; plastics, not so much.
Foam swords like these are a great and inexpensive option. You could also allow your kid to bring out the accessories for the pre-trick-or-treating photos, but leave them at home when they actually hit the streets.

5. Get high-quality flashlights capable of lighting the ground immediately in front of your child.

Unfortunately, glow sticks don’t provide enough light to walk safely from house to house, so while all of your neighbors’ kids might use them, you’ll want something more effective.
Every trick-or-treater should have a working flashlight to avoid accidental trips and falls. You certainly don’t want to spend Halloween night nursing skinned knees and comforting crying toddlers—not when you could spend that time sneaking bites of their candy stash.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Rawpixel

Avoid the cheap Halloween-themed flashlights you find at big-box stores unless the packaging shows an actual light rating. Anything less than 35–60 lumens probably won’t light the way too effectively once you’re actually outdoors (although your mileage will vary, depending on the amount of natural light and other factors). Look for a flashlight with multiple light settings and a fairly wide lumen range, and you’ll be in good shape. We recommend the Outlight A100, a high-quality flashlight with a water-resistant design and a budget-friendly price tag.
With that said, any camping flashlight should do the job nicely. Just be sure to check your batteries before you leave the house—and if you’re trick-or-treating with multiple kids, make sure that they’ve each got their own light source.

6. Choose safe, protective shoes.

Costume shoes usually don’t work for safe trick-or-treating, especially past dusk. They’re often too thin to properly protect your kids’ feet, and because sizing ranges greatly from one manufacturer to the next, they can cause blisters—not what you’d want at the end of a long night with a tired toddler.
Really, any high-quality shoes will work, provided that they aren’t heels. Shinmax offers an affordable set of LED shoes with rechargeable lights, which will bring some much-needed illumination to Halloween night. You can get them on Amazon here, but be aware that the sizing runs a little large.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/LightFieldStudios

If you’ve already got some decent shoes—and believe us, we understand the importance of keeping a kid’s footwear budget under control—consider upgrading with some LED safety lights (here’s a cheap pair for under $20). They’re not totally necessary if you’ve already picked up reflective tape and a decent flashlight, but they’ll make the holiday a bit safer, and kids love them.
What Halloween-loving kid wouldn’t want glowing shoes? Heck, we’re adults, and we kind of want a pair for ourselves.

7. Don’t forget to keep your home’s walkways lit.

Kids will be walking up your pathway all night (well, if you’re lucky, anyway), so stop them from stumbling by planting a few solar lights.
While there’s no shortage of Halloween-themed pathway lights, most are cheaply made and nearly useless at night. We prefer the look of Voona solar lights, which use AA Ni-MH batteries to store a powerful charge.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Robert Ingelhart

They’re slightly expensive, but they are well worth the investment as they’re one of the few items on this list that doesn’t immediately lose its value on the first day of November.
Alternately, you could pick up a smart light kit, which opens up plenty of fun possibilities on Halloween; keep them bright while your trick-or-treating victims—er, guests—walk to your house, then turn them bright red before you swing open the door.
https://twitter.com/JoanESheehan/status/1046914758014849024
While you’re at it, consider putting up a few temporary signs warning drivers to take it slow. We’re big fans of this orange pop-up safety cone, which is portable, lightweight, and ideal for this type of application. Granted, some teenagers might snatch it, but the risk is worth it considering you’ll improve your neighborhood’s safety during trick-or-treating.

8. By all means, check candy, but realize that it’s probably not a major issue.

Check your kids’ candy, looking for any pieces that appear re-wrapped. Tell your kids to refuse homemade treats unless they’re from trusted neighbors or family members, and set a few ground rules regarding the amount of candy they’re allowed to eat at once.
Those are some pretty common-sense steps, but we should note that Halloween poisonings don’t really happen except in extremely isolated cases. Snopes.com, which investigates urban legends, says there are no documented cases in which intentionally poisoned candy was handed out randomly to trick-or-treaters—not one, not ever.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Onfokus

Of course, that doesn’t mean that Halloween candy is healthy. If you’re trying to rid your household of sugar (or if you’re simply looking to limit the amount of sweets your neighborhood hands out), consider giving kids toys, temporary tattoos, and stickers instead.  Novelty assortment packs are pretty cheap, and they can give you some peace of mind—at least until the older kids start TP-ing your house.
One more note regarding candy safety: Some objects (we’re looking at you, spider rings) can be serious choking hazards for younger children. While you’re skimming through their treat bags (and taking your share of the dreaded Parental Candy Tax), be sure to separate those items from the rest of the stash.

9. If your kids are heading out alone, you’ll need to take some extra precautions.

Should you let your 10-year-old head out onto the streets alone? That’s a difficult question, and the answer varies from parent to parent. Some experts believe that solo trick-or-treating is an important part of childhood.
“When you say it’s all too dangerous because your children don’t know how to cross the street, and all your neighbors are awful … then you are giving up on your neighborhood and your child,” notes Lenore Skenazy, the author of the controversial book Free-Range Kids.
If you’re considering the question, you probably know what’s right for your family. Ideally, your kid won’t be truly “alone,” but heading out with friends, so a logical first step is to make sure that all of their parents are aware of the situation.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Lisa5201

Next, talk over acceptable trick-or-treat routes and set ground rules for talking with strangers. Make sure that your child knows what to do if they get lost, and make sure they’ve got a way to contact you if necessary. If they’re old enough to head out alone, they’re old enough to hold onto a phone—at least for one night, anyway.
Tell them to only visit well-lit houses, and to never enter anyone’s house for candy (unless it’s a well-known, trusted friend—we’d even recommend giving them a specific list of houses that meet those criteria). Many homes set out candles and other luminaries during Halloween; tell kids to avoid standing near these, especially if they’re wearing flammable materials.

10. Finally, make sure to keep your other Halloween activities as safe as possible.

If you’re carving jack-o-lanterns, allow your kids to help during the planning stages, but don’t let younger kids anywhere near your carving tools. That’s just asking for trouble.
“The most common accidents associated with pumpkin carving are stab wounds to the fingers and palm,” Stuart J. Elkowitz, MD, assistant clinical professor at NYU Langone Medical Center in the division of hand surgery, tells Consumer Reports.
Sure, that’s obvious, but doesn’t it sound much more official when an actual doctor says it?

HealthyWay
iStock.com/yulkapopkova

Older kids can help out, but to stay safe, consider investing in some cut-resistant gloves. Wislife offers an affordable (and highly reviewed) pair that meets EN388 cutting resistance standards; get them here.
Note that these gloves don’t protect in all circumstances, so you’ll still want to guide your kids through their first pumpkin carvings. This is a good opportunity to teach the basics of knife safety, too, by the way: Always cut away from yourself, don’t apply unnecessary pressure, and keep your knives clean and sharp.
While we’re on the subject, specialized pumpkin carving kits can make the process much safer (and improve the quality of the finished product). This kit, for example, includes two saws, a poker, and a scoop, and the saws’ serrated edges will provide much more precise cuts than a standard kitchen knife.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/shironosov

You can even find professional-level pumpkin carving kits, which come with a variety of high-quality saws. Sure, it might be overkill, but high-quality kits will last for years, while the cheaper options are only good for one or two gourds.
Ultimately, Halloween doesn’t have to be a frightening time for parents (well, not frightening in a bad way, anyways). Use common sense, communicate with your kids, and make sure you’re prepared. When All Hallow’s Eve rolls around, you’ll be able to relax with a nice glass of apple cider while the kids enjoy the holiday.

Everything You Need To Throw A Halloween Party With A Transylvania Twist

Halloween’s probably our favorite holiday—at least, if we’re not counting National Spaghetti Day—and there’s no better way to celebrate than by throwing a big party. It’s a great excuse to dress up in a ridiculous costume, play some games, and eat an assortment of brain-shaped foods.
Of course, to throw a really great party, you need appropriate decorations. We searched Amazon to find the best affordable Halloween party gear, and we came up with quite a few gems. If you’re preparing to throw a monster mash of your own, here’s everything you’ll need to get started.

1. Nothing says Halloween like butcher’s knives and…cutting boards, we guess?

Here’s the perfect Halloween gift for the bloodthirsty cannibal who has everything. This personalized cutting board celebrates the dark holiday with eco-friendly bamboo construction. That’s right; you can eat the neighbors and save the environment at the same time.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Pick from a variety of limited-edition etchings, and supply your family’s last name for a special touch. We’d recommend skipping that part if you or the recipient are lying low for any major unsolved crimes.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Personalized-Spooky-Halloween-Cutting-Rectangular/dp/B07H2M4YX2/”]Personalized Halloween Cutting Board, $59.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

2. Make no bones about it; we’ll take sugar in our coffee.

There’s room for one final fright when you serve your guests their dessert coffee. Pick up this set of stainless steel sugar spoons and stick one in the bowl.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Your guests will toss in a few scoops and stir…only to realize, as they draw the spoon out, that they’ve been using a skull for a coffee spoon! Or, rather, they’ve been using a spoon-shaped kind of like a skull! Either way, the scare should run right up against the edge of a lawsuit, without quite crossing over. Hopefully.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/FOXAS-Stainless-Stirring-Everyday-Designed/dp/B01IT8926W/”]Stainless Steel Skull Sugar Spoons, $12.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

3. Hoo hoo who’s ready to party?

The only thing scarier than the hoot of an owl on a moonlit night is the hoot of a skeleton owl at your own Halloween party. We can’t help with the sound effects, but we’ve got you on the decorations.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You might remember Crazy Bonez as the company that brought you life-size plastic skeleton rats, cats, and even snakes. Well, they’re back at it, this time with an undead owl decoration that’s ideal decor for any fright-fest. Set this little creep up on the bookshelf and watch your guests back slowly out of the room. It’ll be a hoot!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Crazy-Bonez-Z28048-Skeleton-Owl/dp/B01B7OI5SQ/”]Crazy Bonez Skeleton Owl Statue, $16.79 from Amazon [/link-button]

4. Injectable gelatin desserts? Now that’s creepy!

It’s not a party without gelatin desserts, are we right? If you want to get really wild this Halloween, you could even try pudding shots…but we can’t condone that kind of decadence.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Anyway, give your dessert table a darkly medical tinge by serving up your gelatin and pudding in big plastic syringes. Have fun squirting gunk in each others’ mouths, and play the Haunted Hospital vibe right to the hilt.
Note: Not for intravenous use.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Party-Syringe-Shooters-Syringes-Medium/dp/B004QHQPCU”]Party Syringe Shooters, $16.42 from Amazon[/link-button]

5. “Whaddaya got there, Dracula, a cold glass of sweet tea?”

We don’t care what the rules of the Buffyverse say; real vampires should only consume blood. If you’re a purist like us, be sure to invest in a few of these blood-bag drink cups. They’re realistic enough to preserve the vampiric illusion. Choose a set of 5, 10, or 20, depending on how many Draculas you expect at your party.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This set comes with a handy-dandy filling syringe, too, so you won’t have to get cherry cola all over the kitchen while you’re putting the refreshments together. No more Draculas with soda cans. We’re talking to you, Whedon.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/WYNK-Parties-Halloween-Vampire-Syringe/dp/B01NH33J19/”]Blood Bags Drink Cups, $11.98 from Amazon[/link-button]

6. “And the skelly goes to…”

Everybody loves a costume contest, but what’s a contest without a prize? This ghoulish statuette makes a memorable award for your contest’s first-place finisher. It features a skeleton (duh) with his head in his hands—literally—cast in brilliant gold (okay, fine, gold-painted plastic).

HealthyWay
Amazon

For under $7, it’s a nice pickup to bring some added pizzazz to your Halloween shindig. Everybloody will love it.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Amscan-Costume-Skeleton-Plastic-Trophy/dp/B000UWGWHS/”]Amscan Best Costume Skeleton Plastic Trophy, $6.90 from Amazon[/link-button]

7. Add some ghoulish fun to your refreshments table.

Cola tastes great, but it isn’t exactly scary. Halloween parties must be scary—or at least give a nod to the nightmarish. These soda-bottle stickers are freakier than the amount of corn syrup in your favorite 2-liter soft drink.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Offer your guests a taste of “Ye Olde Spider Venom” or the “Zombie Virus” itself. Just place these graphic stickers over the original label on your party beverage and let the fun begin. Best case scenario: The guests are too frightened to imbibe, and you get to keep the soft drinks for yourself.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Morbid-Enterprises-Halloween-Slapsticker-Decoration/dp/B003PSQPVM”]Halloween Slapsticker Soda Decorations, $9.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

8. Light your way through dark dance floors with bracelets that emit a ghostly glow.

Lots of people are afraid of the dark. Good. That makes it easier to set the ambiance at your next Halloween party. Of course, you can’t have people walking into each other and stubbing their toes on the fireplace. You do need some light.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Hand out these glowing LED bracelets at the door and get this party started. (You should probably provide other light sources, too. In fact, you definitely should not depend on LED bracelets to light an entire darkened house. That is not safe.)
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bracelets-Fluorescence-Multicolor-Birthdays-Halloween/dp/B07FQQ9JV4/”]Multicolor LED Bracelets, $14.97 from Amazon[/link-button]

9. Who can wield these Medallions of Horror?

There’s no Halloween costume in the world that can’t be improved by a glowing LED necklace. This set of 15 plastic medallions covers all the bases of the season’s freakings. You’ve got your angry Jack-O-Lanterns, your friendly ghosts, and even your…pirate ships?

HealthyWay
Amazon

We guess pirates are still scary. At any rate, these flashing LED pendants add an ambient glow to any darkened party room. Kids love them, too. Toss them into trick-or-treat bags or hand them out to your party guests. That should be enough to keep the evil spirits at bay.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074BV191W”]LED Halloween Necklaces, $17.59 from Amazon[/link-button]

10. Candy alone can be too much of a good thing. Here’s a party favor that’ll fill the gap.

Remember Slinkies? Oddly enough, we could ask that question to everyone going back to our great-grandparents…but we’re asking you. It’s hard to explain how a bit of plastic spring can be so satisfying, but in an age of fidget spinners, maybe there’s no mystery there.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You can’t give your guests candy alone. You’ll make them sick! Supplement their goodie bags with these Halloween-themed “Magic Springs.” We can’t call them Slinkies for reasons of copyright law, but you know how they work.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Fun-Express-Halloween-Classroom-Giveaways/dp/B01LZZ9XX9/”]Halloween Magic Springs, $14 from Amazon[/link-button]

11. Don’t be afraid of assembling the goody bags.

This kit does it for you. It’s a 100-piece set of glow-in-the-dark Halloween toys, including creepy-crawly plastic bugs, eyeball-themed bouncy balls, and slip-on witch fingers. And did we mention it all glows in the dark? It all glows in the dark.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This grab-bag has pretty much everything you’d want for a primo Halloween favor bag. It’s all non-toxic, too, although we don’t recommend eating any of it. Come to think of it, these probably aren’t great for small children or anyone with a taste for glow-in-the-dark plastic. For everyone else, though, they’re great!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/JOYIN-Halloween-Plastic-Fingers-Decorations/dp/B07579V2PT/”]Glow-in-the-Dark Halloween Party Favors, $14.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

12. Maybe we won’t have a second serving after all…

Serve up your Halloween dinner on a set of porcelain salad plates that feature lovely designs reminiscent of Morticia Addams’ finest lace. The designs include a skull, a black cat, a haunted mansion, and a witch in flight, all in the style of “Wiccan Lace.” We’re not sure what separates Wiccan lace from regular lace, but either way, these designs are gorgeous.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These are well-crafted, reusable dinner plates that will last you year after year. Shoot, you don’t even have to save them for just Halloween. Break them out early on October 1 to celebrate National Lace Day.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/222-Fifth-Halloween-Appetizer-Porcelain/dp/B00FYJ3342″]Wiccan Lace Appetizer Plates, $34 from Amazon[/link-button]

13. Serve up your Halloween candy with vintage flair.

Halloween is all about candy. Sure, there are the chills and thrills, but most of us could take those or leave them. Candy, on the other hand, is the real must-have item.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Why not give your guests what they’re here for with a little bit of style? This vintage Halloween candy bowl depicts a grinning cartoon cat (black, of course), seated inside a half-headed Jack-O-Lantern. The result is more whimsical than scary, but as long as your guests get their sugar fix, they’ll be happy either way.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/One-Holiday-Lane-Halloween-Decoration/dp/B072M6KMR4/”]Vintage Halloween Candy Bowl, $28.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

14. Ding dong, the witch is dead—but the cupcakes are still delicious.

Aren’t you sick of conventional Halloween cupcake toppers? We’ve seen enough pumpkins, skulls, and shrouded ghosts to last us a thousand Samhain Eves. However, until today, we’ve never seen a cake topper like this one.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They’re essentially little plastic witch legs. There’s kind of a Wizard of Oz vibe here, with the feet and legs of a sticking out witch (possibly of a wicked nature and eastern location), but the connotation is more that these witches dove right in. Either way, this will take your party treats further than the same old skull toppers (or aforementioned spider rings) everyone’s seen before.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Whaline-Halloween-Decorations-Decoration-Supplies/dp/B07GJLH9TS/”]Witch Boot Halloween Cupcake Toppers, $10 from Amazon[/link-button]

15. “Excuse me, where’s the little ghoul’s room?”

The bathroom: It’s arguably even more important than the kitchen for a good party. Still, when you have a bunch of elaborately costumed strangers in your home, you don’t want to spend all night pointing out the restroom door.
HealthyWay
This full-sized door cover takes care of the job for you with a little wink. Mr. Bones is relaxing on the throne, reading his favorite newspaper. Your guests will get the gist.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Skeleton-Restroom-Cover-Party-Accessory/dp/B003NT5KRI”]Skeleton Restroom Door Cover, $5.50 from Amazon[/link-button]

16. We’d hate to meet the spider who made these webs.

Artificial spider webs are to Halloween what silver tinsel is to Christmas. Now, ask yourself: Where do you find your tinsel? It’s not like you can pop on down to the Town Tinselry after work.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Nope, you’ve got to go to Amazon. The same is true for your Halloween webbing. This manageable package from Fun World stretches out into more than 800 feet of cobwebs! With that kind of volume, you and a friend could hop into a two-person spider costume and still pose at scale. Now, where can we find a two-person spider costume?
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Fun-World-Stretch-Halloween-Decoration/dp/B00FQBLOVW”]Super Stretch Spider Web, $9.95 from Amazon[/link-button]

17. Everything is spookier by candlelight…

But who needs the fire risk? Plus, there’s all that wax to clean up when the party’s over. You can always go for LED candles, but they never look quite real enough for the creepy ambiance of a Halloween party…at least, not until now.

HealthyWay
Amazon

LED Lytes Candles are made from real wax, with a genuine dripped-over texture. They just don’t have the dangerous parts, like the wick and the flame. They’re little flickering LED bulbs that imitate real candlelight perfectly. Even better, they won’t blow out when the seance reaches its climax.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/LED-Lytes-Timer-Candles-Flickering/dp/B01M2CCEBK”]LED Lytes Candles, $25.97 from Amazon[/link-button]

18. “Worst of all were the eyes, the flashing eyes in the dark.”

Scare the tears out of your party guests by setting up these Peep n’ Peepers lights up in every dark corner. Just don’t tell them they’re called “Peep n’ Peepers.” That name kind of ruins the mood, when you think about it.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These sets of LED-powered flashing eyeballs have adjustable eyelids, so you can make them as silly or as threatening as you like. They flash at intervals, giving the impression of strange blinking creatures in the dark. Yikes!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Peep-Peepers-Flashing-Halloween-Lights/dp/B001F8LICA”]Flashing Eyes Halloween Lights, $19.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

19. Build a truly spooky selfie station.

Look, no one under the age of 30 is coming to your party if you don’t have a selfie station. Here’s a simple, low-cost solution. It’s a 5-foot-by-7-foot drop cloth that you can hang from your professional-quality light stands…or just tape to the wall for the duration of the party.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This backdrop depicts a set of open gates that beckon you into a creepy, fog-choked cemetery beyond. In short, it’ll look great on Instagram!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Halloween-Pictorial-Customized-photography-Background/dp/B0166U01RE”]Halloween-Themed Photography Backdrop, $16.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

20. Why stop with a selfie station when you can make a whole room into an unsettling set piece?

We’re assuming you don’t live in a crumbling gothic mansion. If you do, please disregard this entire item. If your walls, like ours, are more Sherwin-Williams than château-chic, this temporary wallpaper will do the trick.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It comes in two pieces and covers a good 40 feet of wallspace. Stick it on to create the illusion of a proud castle fallen on hard times…or maybe an immortal owner who’s biding his time for a dark age to come.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Amscan-676108-Gothic-Mansion-Room/dp/B005GZRFS4″]Gothic Mansion Room Roll, $20.39 from Amazon[/link-button]

21. Keep it simple, skeleton.

Sometimes the simplest ways are still best. This black-and-orange striped table cover would be at home at a thousand Halloween parties past. But there’s a reason it’s a classic.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This one is designed to cover your standard folding party tables, famous from generations of elementary school gatherings. You’ll recognize the feel of the slippery, thin plastic from your own childhood—or, if you are, in fact, a child now, you’ll make a holiday memory that’ll last a lifetime. Also, you shouldn’t be making online purchases without your parents in the mix. Come on, kids!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Beistle-00104-Orange-Stripes-Tablecover/dp/B0131SHRUI”]Plastic Orange-and-Black Striped Tablecloth, $6.97 from Amazon[/link-button]

22. Direct traffic (gruesomely, of course).

These bloody footprints and bloodstains work wonderfully for directing guests to the bathroom, kitchen, or any other key party area. Simply peel the back and apply to any smooth surface. For extra horror, try tossing a few on the ceiling.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They feature a strong adhesive that’s safe on most materials, including ceramic tile and wood, and they’re fairly realistic. For under $11, you get 63 pieces—more than enough to make your home look like a crime scene (but, uh, in a good way).

23. Indulge your inner arachnophile with this ring toss game.

Every party needs games. This inflatable ring toss is surprisingly fun, and it looks pretty adorable, too. The legs have different scores; play for a high score or elimination style (think darts, but with a giant spider).

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s great for partygoers of all ages, and it’s made from high-quality plastic. For extra fun, throw a handful of real spiders onto it (note: Please don’t actually do this).

24. Drinks taste better when you sip them from the hand of death.

You can quote us on that. This bundle comes with a dozen skeleton-hand glasses, spider webbing, and a bundle of Halloween-themed napkins.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Serve your guests a putrid punch or coffin cooler, then marvel at the high-quality craftsmanship. It’s almost like they’re made of real human bones…but they’re not, of course. That would be illegal. We checked.
We should note that these glasses are fairly small; they hold about two ounces, according to the description, so plan accordingly.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Halloween-Party-Supply-Bundle-Skeleton/dp/B075QXFKPZ”]Halloween Skeleton Hand Glass Party Bundle, $29.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

25. Cast a spell on your partygoers with this fun banner.

Printed on eco-friendly paper, this banner bears the words “Drink Up, Witches,” implying that your guests should, in fact, enjoy the prune juice and goat’s milk that you’ve set out for them. Surely, you’re not serving anything else at your Halloween party.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The glittering gold letters are suspended on a lightweight string, so you can easily hang them on walls, branches, or anywhere else (you know how banners work, right?). The manufacturer also offers a 100 percent satisfaction money-back guarantee, so if you’re disappointed with your purchase, you won’t have to place a hex on the seller.

26. We can’t think of a good zombie popcorn pun, but give us a second.

Okay, let’s see…Orville Dead-enbacher? Yeah, that’s what we should have said.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Every party needs some food, and these miniature popcorn boxes add a little undead flair to your snack table. They’re intended for popcorn, and they’re made from cardstock, so you probably wouldn’t want to put anything heavy in them, but if you want to fill them up with cow’s brains or blood pudding—you know, typical party fare—be our guest.
Each order comes with 24 boxes. Note that they’re fairly small; each measures 3” × 3”× 4”.

27. Glittery things can be scary, too.

Come to think of it, glitter is pretty terrifying stuff. Try to apply it on your own, and you’ll find yourself picking little sparkles out of your carpet for the next several decades.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These hanging decorations let you enjoy the glitter without the mess. You get an assortment of skulls, spiders, bats, and crows, perfect for adorning your party room. The product description notes that it’s perfect for “Halloween…or any other themed events,” but let’s be honest: If you’re using these for something other than Halloween, you’ve got real issues.
Each pack comes with one “chandelier” piece and 28 other hanging cutouts. For around $11, it’s a pretty fantastic value.

28. These punch balloons are perfect for kids’ parties.

Granted, they’re great for adult parties, too, but you’ve got to be a kid to truly appreciate the wonder of a punchable balloon. Each pack comes with 16 balloons: eight jack-o-lanterns, four skulls, and four vampire bats.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They’re made with high-quality, durable latex, and they’re ideal party favors for younger guests. For extra fun, fill them with about 80 percent helium to make them float mid-air. The rubber material has a slight synthetic odor, so unwrap them a few days before the event to give them time to air out (so to speak).
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Amscan-392399-Halloween-Ghoulish-Balloon/dp/B00B0Z0JPU/”]Halloween Ghoulish Punch Balloons, $8.49 from Amazon[/link-button]

29. This cute party dress has a macabre flourish.

At first glance, it’s a cute little cocktail dress adorned with flowers; look closer, and you’ll see the skulls and crossbones. Muhahaha.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s made with soft satin, and at under $30 (prices vary with sizing), it’s an outstanding value. We really love the big black bow-tie design and the halter neckline. Per the user reviews, the sizing is accurate—which is unusual by Amazon standards—and a stretch panel on the back allows for a comfortable fit. Pair it with a petticoat, and you’re ready to shake your bones on the dancefloor.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/DRESSTELLS-Rockabilly-Halloween-White-Skull/dp/B0732ZQ85L”]Vintage Skull Cocktail Dress, $18.66 to $27.69 from Amazon[/link-button]

30. Make sure that your party isn’t dead on arrival.

Nobody really sends paper invitations anymore, and that’s a shame. Sure, you can save a few bucks by inviting your friends on social media, but if you really want to throw a classic party, take the extra step and send out a few postcards.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These coffin-shaped cards help your guests plan for your shindig, and they perfectly walk the line between cute and grim (it’s a pretty wide line, now that we think of it). Each card has places for date, time, place, details, and an RSVP. They’re printed on durable cardstock with a matte finish. You also get a set of eye-catching blood-red envelopes.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Halloween-Invitation-Cards-Fill-Invitations/dp/B07DVX6LP6/”]Halloween Invitation Cards, 60 Count, $12.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

31. This toilet topper isn’t great for arachnophobes.

Peel it and place it onto the top of your toilet lid (not the actual seat). It shows a variety of venomous spiders climbing out of the commode—or into it, we suppose. That depends on your perspective.

HealthyWay
Amazon

In any case, it’s sure to scare the pants off your guests in the one room where that’s actually appropriate. After the party, it removes easily without leaving any residue. One reviewer notes that it’s “not very realistic,” but in our book, that’s actually a plus. Be sure to check the sizing; if you’ve got an especially large toilet, this sticker might run a bit small.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Spider-Toilet-Topper-Place-Accessory/dp/B003BQGN6U/”]Spider Toilet Topper, $5.32 from Amazon[/link-button]

32. Enjoy a candlelit party without the fire hazard.

If you’re sticking fairly close to this list, you’ve got an assortment of paper decorations, faux cobwebs, and other highly flammable stuff. Candles probably aren’t the best idea.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Fortunately, LED candles exist, and they’re the next best thing to actual flame. This 12-piece kit gives you plenty of soft light for a Halloween party, and they’ve got built-in timers to prevent the batteries from running down. Not that that’s much of a concern—each provides about 60 hours of light on a single CR2032 battery. The LED “flames” flicker, providing a realistic effect, and they’re still quite useful when the holiday’s over.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/PChero-Operated-Decorative-Flameless-Flickering/dp/B073FZ7VSM/”]12-Piece Timer LED Candle Set, $14.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

33. What’s a Halloween party without a nice serving of brains?

Maybe we should say, “braaaaaaaaiiiins.” This plastic mold lets you make your own brain-shaped gelatin molds, perfect for freaking out kids or eliciting a light chuckle from adults (man, we’ve become way too jaded).

HealthyWay
Amazon

Add in your favorite flavor of Jell-O, and you’ll have a jiggly, slightly horrifying snack. This line from the product description sums up the appeal nicely: “What’s the best way to freak people out? Serve them a gelatin brain.” We certainly can’t argue with that. Note that the same manufacturer also offers heart-shaped and hand-shaped gelatin molds, so with a bit of creativity, you can make an entire organ-shaped Jell-O buffet.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Fun-World-FW-8631-Plastic-Brain/dp/B009S5SL90/”]Plastic Brain Gelatin Mold, $4.59 from Amazon[/link-button]

34. When you really want your party to “crush it,” this prop is awesome.

It’s an officially licensed piece of Wizard of Oz merchandise, and more importantly, it’s a hilarious conversation piece. The two stuffed legs stick out from underneath any heavy object—we recommend tucking them under a piano or kitchen appliance.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They feature the ruby-red slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East. Dress up your dog as Toto—or simply throw on Toto’s “Africa”—and you’ve got a great theme party going. These are a simple accent, but you’ll find yourself bringing them out every Halloween from now on.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Wizard-18-Inch-Wicked-Witch-Legs/dp/B002UDUPP0/”]Wicket Witch of the East Legs, $11.20 from Amazon[/link-button]

35. If you’re really looking for something grim, these asylum scene setters should do the trick.

The kit includes “two large wall posters of a long, bloody hallway in a decrepit sanitarium with the images of a vacated wheelchair and corpse on a gurney, accented by assorted cardstock cutouts of rats, knives, murderous nurses, ‘Psycho Ward’ signs, and more.” What better way to show your party guests that you’re actually certifiably committed to spooking them with the most elaborately decorated Halloween party ever?

HealthyWay
Amazon

While the wall decoration is a horrific masterpiece, we really love the cardstock cutouts, which look great propped up in windows. If you’re trying to fill up some empty wall space, this kit is the ghastly touch you need.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Asylum-Scene-Setters-Halloween-Decorating/dp/B00JFB7W7Y/”]Asylum Scene Setters Halloween Decorating Kit, $9.88 from Amazon[/link-button]

36. After seeing It, we’re all a bit coulrophobic.

Coulrophobia, by the way, means an irrational fear of clowns. We’re pretty sure that phobia doesn’t technically exist—no fear of clowns is truly irrational.

HealthyWay
Amazon

In case you’re living under a rock (or in the depths of a haunted sewer), the 2017 film It brought clowns back into the mainstream. The main villain, Pennywise, is a figure of unspeakable evil, so naturally, someone made a cardboard cutout of him in all his demonic glory. We recommend setting it up right by your front door; as guests arrive, you can film their reactions.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Graphics-Pennywise-Dancing-Cardboard/dp/B075NKL4V5/”]Pennywise the Dancing Clown Cardboard Cutout, $39.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

37. Start your own coven with these witch caps.

You know that someone is going to show up at your party without a costume. Maybe they’ll have a nametag with their name on it, and they’ll say that they’re “going as themselves.” Lame. Seriously, what’s wrong with people? You can’t take five seconds to get a cheap costume together?

HealthyWay
Amazon

If anyone tries that trick at your party, you’ll be prepared. Order a set of witch caps, and if someone shows up in their street clothes, hand them a hat. Now they’re going as “the wicked witch of being boring at parties.” Maybe they’ll think twice next Halloween.

39 Things You Need To Make Your Home Cozy And Ready For Fall

During the dog days of summer, it might not feel like cooler temperatures will ever arrive. But trust us: Autumn is right around the corner, and now’s the time to get your home ready for the falling leaves and crisp air of this beloved season.
Fortunately, Amazon’s got everything you need to fall-ify your home. We’re talking autumnal decor, cozy stuff to fill your digs, seasonal art, and (of course) pumpkin spice everything. Here’s your guide to the best fall stuff for your home that you can find on Amazon.

1. The Coziest Addition to Your Couch for Fall

If tossing this seasonal throw blanket on your sofa was all you did to get ready for fall, that would be enough. The Tache Fall Farmhouse Patchwork Throw Blanket brings a palette of fall colors and patterns to your couch.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The brown and orange squares allude to the changing colors of the foliage, while the plaid patches give this blanket a cabin-like quality. Plus, the ultra soft fleece is super snuggly—perfect for a cozy night in during this fresh, crisp time of year.

2. Lean against some leaves.

So you’ve tossed a cuddly throw blanket on your couch, but you’re looking for a way to take this cozy area of your home to the next level for fall. Enter the LEIOH Fall Decor Cotton Linen Throw Pillow Covers.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The set features four distinctive foliage designs, including a striking red sugar maple leaf and foliage with artfully blotchy color patterns. If you want to plump up your couch just a little more, toss them on top of solid-colored throw pillows in hues like burnt red, marigold, and evergreen. Your couch will look like it belongs in a magazine.

3. Waft the scent of the season through your home.

No matter what time of year it is, the Village Candle Spiced Pumpkin-Scented Glass Jar Candle will fill your home with the quintessential scent of fall: pumpkin spice.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The sunset-orange paraffin wax candle is infused with the fragrance of pumpkin, with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and ginger. Light it, and anyone who steps foot inside your home will suspect that you’ve got a scrumptious pumpkin pie baking right now—even if your oven’s completely empty.

4. Set the mood with flameless candles.

As much as most people love classic scented candles, the fire hazard they present makes them difficult to have around when you have a big family or pets. Fortunately, Flameless Candle LED Lights With Decorative Fall Leaves give you the same romantic lighting you’d expect from a conventional candle in a completely safe form.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It won’t offer the same scent, but the gorgeous leaf decoration more than makes up the difference. Pop them on a nightstand, table, or in strategic places throughout your house.

5. Twinkle lights aren’t just for Christmas.

Fall’s the time of year when the sun starts to set earlier and earlier each day. Keep your home bright and festive with a battery-powered fall garland.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This one features orange and yellow maple leaves wrapped around copper twinkle lights with adorable pumpkin accents. They’re the perfect decoration for a fall get-together—but we wouldn’t be surprised if this pretty garland stays hung all the time this season.

6. K-Cups in All the Fall Flavors

While pumpkin spice reigns supreme in the land of fall flavors, there are a variety of other seasonings to savor in autumn. This Coffee Variety Pack For Keurig K-Cup Brewers seems to capture just about every fall flavor into one handy pack.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Start your mornings with coffee flavors like butter toffee, spiced apple cider, caramel apple, cinnamon roll, caramel creme, vanilla velvet, and classic pumpkin spice. Pop one of these in your brewer and relish in the tastes of fall as you start your day.

7. Get your pumpkin spice fix at home.

Some of us just can’t make it through the season without the sweet taste of pumpkin spice first thing in the morning. Rather than falling into the expensive trap of buying a pumpkin spice latte from your go-to cafe every day, stock up on Fall In Love Pumpkin Spice Flavored Ground Coffee, so you can brew your own right at home.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You’ll notice an autumnal aroma with notes of cinnamon and spice as soon as you open the bag. And the taste is even better once you brew it into a steaming cuppa Joe.

8. The Seasonal Tea That Will Become Your Year-Round Favorite

Coffee isn’t your thing? Don’t worry—you don’t have to live without pumpkin spice drinks. Twinings of London Pumpkin Spice Chai Tea Bags infuse fine black tea leaves with that same beloved pumpkin spice flavor found in the season’s most popular espresso drinks.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Serve it with milk for a latte-like beverage, or just drink it black for a robust burst of flavor to jumpstart your day. Who ever said pumpkin spice was strictly for coffee?

11. A Wall of Foliage for Fall

Whether you live in a boxy urban apartment with no great view outside or a tropical environment where palm trees dominate, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning beauty of the fall foliage. Fortunately, Wall26 has found a way to bring the glorious sight indoors in the form of peel-and-stick wallpaper.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This fiery red tree mural is easily applied to any flat, dry surface either inside or outside your home. And when you’re ready for a new seasonal view, simply peel it off and slap on another scene.

12. Fall foliage that actually lasts all season long.

Fall foliage is a fleeting phenomenon. It seems like one minute, gorgeous leaves fill the trees. And the next, the branches are bare and leaves are in big piles on the ground. Bring some of this magic inside (and keep it there throughout the season) with Moon Boat Fall Artificial Maple Leaves Decoration.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The box contains 500 individual leaves that look completely realistic. They make for a lovely decoration when tossed on a dining room table, stuffed in a clear glass bowl, wrapped around candles, or woven into a wreath.

Winter Solstice Wellness: Self-Care Suggestions For The Shortest Day Of The Year

In 2017, the start of winter and the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere falls on December 21. But this particular Thursday is more than another pre-Christmas date on the calendar. There’s a long history all over the globe of using the winter solstice—the darkest day of the year—as an opportunity to turn inward and celebrate the light inside the individual and the community. Ancient cultures including the Pagans, Celts, Norsemen, and even Romans used the solstice as a time to celebrate the death and consequent rebirth of the natural world that happens because of winter.
In addition to its spiritual traditions, the winter solstice is astrologically and astronomically significant as it marks the point in time when we in the northern hemisphere are tilted as far away from the sun as we’re going to get. So it’s not only the season of the shortest days with the least light, the winter solstice also marks the longest night of the year. Basically, the cold and dormant landscapes many of us are surrounded by combined with decidedly moody light conditions are ripe for tempting mere mortals to retreat from the world into a person-sized nest on the couch.
While a little hibernating with Netflix is certainly understandable, a self-care focused solstice celebration could be the perfect chance for you to check in with your whole self and make sure you’re tending to your needs and living intentionally, even during the darkest time of the year.
From the more recognizable December traditions like feasting and gathering around Yule logs, to the seemingly otherworldly customs that historians believe were nature and light-worshipping rituals at Stonehenge, there’s lots to be inspired by when it comes to honoring the winter solstice and the woman within.

Witchy Wellness with a Modern Twist

The “witchier” aspects of celebrating this darkest day are coming back into style (yay!), providing the perfect opportunity to reconnect with yourself and the natural world. So whether you want to go solo with some soothing solstice-inspired rituals for yourself or celebrate the season of spirit with your coven of friends, we have a few ideas about how you can mark the day in a meaningful and wellness-focused way.

Try This: Mind

Pagan author and educator T. Thorn Coyle writes that “for contemporary people, solstices … are a chance to still ourselves inside, to behold the glory of the cosmos, and to take a breath with the Sacred.” Whether you have an established mindfulness practice or are merely interested in meditation, a great way to help yourself focus on and take stock of the inner you is to try a guided meditation for inner reflection, acceptance, and celebrating the light within. Here’s a great one from meditation expert Esther Teule of Ekhart Yoga.

Try This: Body

Get outside! Pull yourself out of a hibernation funk by celebrating the things you love that you can only do in winter or that are made even better by the cold. If you’re in a snowy locale, plan an ice-skating or sledding date with your significant other, your kids, or your circle of female friends in true pagan tradition. Get in a little heart-pounding exercise while you celebrate the way the so-called harsh conditions of winter make this kind of fun possible. Just add a hot cider and cookie-fueled fireside (or rather, Yule log-side) chat afterward for the perfect afternoon ritual.
For solo reflection, try this cold-weather self-care practice: Fill your tub up with extra hot water, add a few drops of some of your favorite essential oils, light candles, and listen to relaxing music as you make time to melt into the tub. You can make this ritual special and specific to the winter solstice by using a mixture of oils like frankincense, pine, cinnamon, and clove, which have ties to ancient solstice celebrations.

Try This: Spirit

Whether or not you believe in divination or have experienced the cards truly speaking to you, the tarot is a time-honored tool that encourages self-reflection. The way you interpret your tarot spread can really give you insights into your personal psychology and the state of things in your head and heart that you might not have been able to realize via other means.
If you have your own deck, the solstice is a great time to use a past, present, and future spread to take stock of your life as it is and start thinking on your intentions for the new year. If you don’t have a deck handy, consider visiting a reader or exploring options that really demonstrate the modernization of the tradition, like having your cards read over the phone or even online.
Whether you want to connect to your own witchy roots or you’re just wanting another excuse to feel festive and focus on your own wellbeing, celebrating the winter solstice with one or all of these modern riffs on the theme is sure to inspire you through the long winter months.

How To Maintain Your Peace Of Mind While Traveling For The Holidays

The Christmas our daughter was barely 5 months old, my husband and I boarded a plane with her from Austria, where we were living, to Southern California—a behemoth of a trip, more than 30 hours door to door. (This doesn’t include the nine-hour time difference.)
Our families were dying to meet the baby, and we figured: She’s small! It’ll be easy! And it’s so lovely in Orange County! Goodbye, dreary Viennese winter.
The minute we got to the airport and saw the lines stretched out to eternity, I broke down sobbing. I was out of my mind with sleep deprivation, and breastfeeding was still touch and go. How on earth would we survive? Had I brought enough formula, changes of clothes, burp cloths, diapers? Had I forgotten Sophie the Giraffe? (Had I even packed my own passport?) I literally turned to my husband and said, “Forget it.”
We went anyway: flew 11 hours to Chicago (the baby slept for an hour and didn’t even fit in the bassinet), endured a four-hour delay at O’Hare due to a storm, and got zero assistance from airline workers, who lectured us on why travelers with kids didn’t get to pre-board (“Studies show that the plane doesn’t fill up any quicker.”)
By the time I got to change my daughter’s diaper—many arguments and terminals later—she had soaked through all her clothes into the Ergo carrier. The image of her pinned to my husband’s chest in the Ergo, wild-eyed with exhaustion while we waited on a delayed flight, will haunt me forever.
By the time we got to SoCal, I was a wreck, as was our daughter, who did nothing but scream from 1 to 4 a.m. We never made that trip again.

Holidays really are the worst time to travel.

According to AAA, Thanksgiving travel in 2017 was the busiest it has been in more than 12 years, with 51 million people on the roads, train, and in the air—an uptick of over 1 million people from last year.
Holiday travel is notoriously awful for everyone, but it creates a particular kind of hell for parents and pregnant women. Gone are the days of settling in with a tiny bottle of wine, People magazine, and a Julia Roberts movie.
For pregnant women, there is often the issue of intense morning sickness, the constant need to pee, uncomfortable seats, awful smells, and strangers reaching for your bump. And for parents? Between air and car sickness, sufficient changes of clothing, enough activities to keep kids occupied, foiled naps, ear popping, kids who won’t sit still or stop whining or wailing, time changes, and unpredictable schedules, it is a recipe for disaster.
So what can you do to keep your cool?

Plan, Plan, Plan: The Basics

Choose your travel time wisely.

Pick a travel time that will be least disruptive to the kids’ schedules. If you’re flying, try not to take off around, say, dinnertime, or in the middle of the toddler’s nap. If it’s a long-haul flight and you think your kid might sleep, choose an overnight and prep them in advance: “Tonight you get to sleep on an airplane!”
If not, make sure they’re well rested before you get on the plane. (So leaving on a 6 a.m. flight that requires you be at the airport at 4:30 a.m.? Not a great plan.) If you’re driving, consider leaving right before a nap, or if it’s a long drive, putting the kids in PJs and taking off right before bedtime.

Choose the right seats.

If your kid is just starting to walk, get an aisle seat. There’s nothing more annoying to a person trying to watch a movie than being asked to get up 107 times so a toddler can wander up and down the aisles. If your child is older, the window seat is great for cloud-watching and pinning stickers to the window. Just make sure they use the bathroom before you board.

Buy travel insurance.

There’s what seems like a 50 percent chance one of your kids will get sick before you leave. It might feel like a waste of money if you don’t use travel insurance, but when two kids are throwing up the night before you take off, you’ll be thrilled that you aren’t losing thousands of hard-earned bucks only to stay home and empty out a bucket.

Strategize about the stroller.

The Mountain Buggy Nano stroller and the YOYA stroller count as carry-on luggage. They fold up so small they can be stored above your seat, so no waiting for everyone to deplane to get your stroller back! It is especially useful if you’re traveling alone with a kid or two and need to know you’ll have access to it at all times.

Get the kid on board.

Fill your child in on the travel plan ahead of time, and keep repeating the information until they really seem to get it. This is a way to get them psyched for the trip—“I’m going to go on a long airplane ride to see cousin Susie!”—and also to make sure they’re not alarmed by any of the steps you’ll take along the way.

How and What to Pack

I spoke with Kitt Fife and Joni Weiss of Practically Perfect. These two—who have six kids between them, as well as a thriving organizing and lifestyle company based in Los Angeles—are experts at getting from A to B with a big brood and everyone’s sanity (mostly) intact.

Practical Stuff:

  • Pack all activities in a backpack for your child. If they are old enough, they should be the one to carry it.
  • Bring an empty water bottle for each kid to fill up after you get through security. For car travel, give each kid a full water bottle before you leave. It’s best if they have straw tops to avoid spills.
  • Do not forget the chargers. It’s awesome that you remembered the phones, iPads, computers, and Kindles. But did you pack the chargers, too?

Necessities:

  • Medication. Doesn’t your kid always spike a fever when you’re halfway to Grandma and Grandpa’s? Make sure you have enough Tylenol on hand. If you’re worried about TSA requirements, buy chewables. Also bring enough Kleenex.
  • Extra clothing. For the kids and for you (yes, you: You do not want to smell like puke for hours on end). If you have a toddler or baby, bring at least two changes per kid. If you’re going on an overnight flight, pack pajamas, too. Once the kid starts to look tired, get them changed and create a more sleep-inducing environment with a favorite luvie, a book, a bottle or breast, and, if possible, dim the lights or bring a sleep mask.
  • Snacks. Plan for a combo of healthy snacks (sliced apples, nuts, dried fruit, fruit pouches) and snacks that will excite the kids because they rarely get them. A few great sweet treats for kids are chocolate peanut gems or mini chocolate chips.
  • Trash bags and Ziplocs. Ziplocs are the best for vomit (seal in the smell!) If someone’s clothes are soiled due to a spill on a flight, a trash bag or Ziploc can also come in handy.
  • Wipes. Enough said.
  • Hand sanitizer. You can go DIY, buy natural, or grab the Purell.
  • Toilet seat covers. BYO. These are great for toddlers who want to touch the seat.
  • If you’re pregnant: Compression socks.
  • If you’re nursing: Bring swaddle blankets. These can be used to cover dirty surfaces, shield the baby from light to help them sleep, cover your breast, or for warmth.

Fun:

  • Mad Libs are super entertaining for older kids.
  • Water Wow is wonderful for younger kids (the best for mess-free art on-the-go).
  • Action Plates are self-contained and super entertaining.
  • Pack a notebook for each child and markers in a pencil case. Fife has these for her kids and breaks them out only on trips.
  • For road trips, Weiss’ kids are obsessed with the license plate game. Good, old-fashioned fun. A “letter hunt” (or number hunt) is a great idea for kids who are too young to read the names of the states. A clipboard/notebook for recording comes in handy here.
  • Bingo sets for the car!

Keeping Calm

Move, move, move.

When our family went on road trips back in the ’80s, I always bolted out of the car at rest stops and cartwheeled across the lawn. I didn’t do this for any logical reason, I just knew I needed to move. Adults need this, too! When you’ve spent hours in a car, it is absolutely vital to move your body at every opportunity.
If you have kids, you can make a game of it—race them around the rest area, see how many jumping jacks you can all do. Get your heart rate going a bit. Even if you’re in a rush to get somewhere, frequent stops can help make the whole trip much more pleasant.
On a flight this is obviously a little more challenging, but you can walk quickly to your gate (f your kids are old enough or take them in strollers) and you can walk around the gate area, do jumping jacks, or be that person doing a handstand next to the baggage claim!
Looking for ways to move on the plane? Walking up and down the aisle with a squealing toddler might be enough, but you can also do in-flight yoga—poses that can easily be done in your seat. Take standing breaks in the rear of the plane, and make sure you’re drinking enough water.

Dealing With Anxiety

Oh, the anxiety of travel. Sometimes all goes smoothly, sometimes it doesn’t. But according to LA-based clinical psychologist Vanessa Katz, PsyD, there are a few things you can do to set yourself up for the sanest possible trip.

  • Give yourself enough time to pack. This might seem obvious, but it is never wise to start your packing at 11:00 the night before you leave only to realize most of your underwear is dirty and you can’t find any sunhats.
  • Make lists. You can even divide things into different categories: carry-on, suitcase, kids’ bags.
  • Read up on your destination. “Find things other travelers have said about a place,” Katz says. “This helps reassure you that others have been okay.”
  • Think about what’s really making you anxious—and share it with someone. Your partner, your mother, your therapist. Talking it out almost always helps relieve the anxiety.
  • Know that you will be coming home. Vacations are finite. Try to enjoy your few days or weeks away, knowing it’ll all be over soon.

Extra Time With Family

If your flight home is delayed because of weather, make sure you have enough stuff to keep the kids occupied. Chances are they will have a lot of new Christmas gifts to dig into, but this might be a time to indulge them a bit by allowing them to watch their favorite shows or taking them to a movie. If the weather is okay where you are—and you can’t stand one more day with your extended family—use it as an excuse to see some sights nearby, even if it’s just the local mall! Scope the options out ahead of time.
Holiday travel can be stressful, but remember that even if everything goes wrong, there is almost always something wonderful to be found in the adventure—or at least a good story to tell!

How To Set Boundaries And Manage Stress During The Holiday Season

The holidays are a time for love, cheer, and tremendous gratitude. But even so, they are rarely without high levels of stress. As a lifetime perfectionist and people-pleaser, I know this all too well.
In addition to the joyful gatherings, I often experience an underlying current of desire to juggle just a few too many things in hopes of making each consecutive year one for the books. Living in a different state than most of my family members has resulted in Christmas becoming one outrageously hectic day. This is the case for many of us. From negotiating and renegotiating schedules that allow for quality time with each loved one to finding the one gift at the top of everyone’s wish list—not to mention the travel necessary to make all of this possible—it’s easy for our own needs to be swept under the rug.
Unfortunately, this creates a breeding ground for elevated stress and overtaxed emotions. And while it’s always done with pure intentions, jumping into the chaos of the holidays without a loving strategy for taking care of ourselves only causes more harm in the long run. The addition of holiday tension to our preexisting daily stressors can have a significant impact on our emotional health. In fact, according to a holiday stress report published by the American Psychological Association (APA), “holiday stress has a particular impact on women.” We are significantly more likely to experience heightened stress levels during this time of year, which is compounded by decreased time to relax and decompress.
Women are often the family members responsible for holiday organizing, shopping, and preparations, and the responsibility of managing our time in a way that also allocates adequate energy to resolving work demands, financial constraints, and household pressures can manifest as unsustainable stress. The APA notes that it’s common for this to result in poor stress-management habits. For some of us, this may mean a lack of adequate sleep. In fact, 68 percent of individuals who participated in the  holiday stress study experienced fatigue often during this time of year. For others, instances of overeating and over-drinking may increase.

The Importance of Boundaries

In an effort to maintain the holiday spirit of selflessness, we sometimes lose sight of our own real, justified needs. If you’re familiar with the concept of setting boundaries, perfect! This action is as important during the holiday season as ever. If boundaries are new to you, that’s okay, too—we’re here to help you create a streamlined approach toward investing in self-care.
No matter the scenario, setting boundaries is an essential form of self-respect. As you’re chaotically rushing to meet every expectation, it’s crucial that you tune into your own emotions. The truth is, we will show up for our loved ones as our best selves if we are also cared for. The stress of spreading ourselves too thin only creates a barrier between ourselves and meaningful, joyful connection as our minds are anxiously hopping from one task to the next. Setting boundaries helps prevent exorbitant stress by ensuring you maintain a balanced number of priorities and, as a result, are more apt to practice genuine presence.
However, as positive as this change sounds, boundaries can be difficult to voice and uphold. As the holiday stress study points out, many women are wired to please during the holidays. The fear of disappointing a loved one can catapult us into a holiday frenzy. Respecting ourselves means that there will be times when we must give ourselves the breathing room and love we need rather than tacking a new item onto the to-do list. So, during the season of giving, how do you say no?

The Power of No

Keeping the peace is important, but what does it mean when this is done at the expense of our own well-being? Despite our desires to turn into holiday Wonder Women, our human limitations are the same during these few months as they are the rest of the year. Often struggling as it is without enough hours in the day, we are acutely aware of time constraints. This also goes for our financial restrictions—yet we continue to squeeze in obligation after obligation, maybe even racking up stress-inducing credit card bills.
With the holidays quickly approaching, set aside enough time to sit down with your schedule and financial statements. First, make some time for your calendar. Outline where you will and won’t have time. Rather than attempting to fit a handful of objectives into a small timeframe, opt to focus one one or two things that are essential to you during the holidays. Two goals may be entirely manageable for you, but the third may be what sends you into a state of exhaustion. Continue to do this whenever you see an open slot in your calendar. Before you know it, you’ll have accomplished all you need to. Looking at the holiday festivities “big picture” may be a bit too overwhelming, but this habit of intentional, honest time management will help you break what might feel enormous down into smaller, more manageable steps.
Once you’ve penciled in time for shopping, gift wrapping, baking, a trip to the post office, or whatever else you’ve prioritized, it’s time to employ these same time- and energy-management strategies with family and friends. As counterintuitive as it may feel, it’s always acceptable and reasonable to say, “No, no more today.” Check your engine light and decide if you truly have the adequate emotional resources and time in the day before quickly agreeing to their plans.
Notice when and with whom you feel most drained. Perhaps this will simply result in spreading your holiday party hosting or attendance out over a week, rather than two short days, or it may mean declining invites altogether. If you know that a certain situation is sure to trigger feelings of tension and undue anxiety, this could be the time to own your “no” and stay home for a movie night—whether that’s a solo affair or includes  your kids or SO. A little Rudolph R&R and hot apple cider may be exactly what you need to replenish your energy stores before the next day of activities. It’s important to know your socialization, shopping, and commuting thresholds rather than optimistically ignoring them.
Second to time, financial limitations and gift expectations can be a major cause of stress. Look over your financial statements in the same manner you engaged your schedule. Create an appropriate budget and stick to it! It’s okay if you need to cap off the presents at X dollars this year, even if you had more wiggle room last year. Know your limit and keep this number in mind as you carefully peruse the aisles for the perfect gift. Remember that the holiday season is not centered on materialism. If the gift is given with love and sincere consideration, it is enough. There is no shame in avoiding post-holiday debt, friends. Respecting your needs means listening to your emotions as much as it means remaining cognizant of the inevitable (and continuous) bills you’ll be paying after the holidays are over.

How to Counter the Opposition

Despite knowing the necessity of setting boundaries with others, there will inevitably be times when your loved ones’ reactions leave you feeling flustered. If you find yourself worrying about how well your friend or family member will receive the new boundary you have set, it will be of particular importance to ground yourself before and after each conversation. Understand that you’re demonstrating the courage to love and care for yourself even when faced with the possibility of disappointing others.
Check in with yourself and take note of whether your request is coming from your highest self. Are you tuning in to your own needs and emotions? If so, you are speaking your truth—and this alone is enough to command respect. Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, one of the women who has paved the way for the self-love revolution with her research on shame, courage, and worthiness at the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work, recommends a few helpful steps to help see you through when you’ve decided to say enough.
First, create a mantra to repeat to yourself as you’re preparing for a boundary-setting conversation with your loved one. Brown silently repeats “Choose discomfort over resentment” to remind herself that although it may not be easy, what she’s doing is necessary for both her physical and emotional well-being. The next step is keeping what she refers to as a resentment journal. She writes, “Whenever I’m marching around muttering cuss words under my breath, I grab what I lovingly refer to as my Damn It! Diary and write down what’s going on. I’ve noticed that I’m most resentful when I’m tired and overwhelmed—i.e., not setting boundaries.”
This not only serves as a release, but also as a tool to help you discover where in your life changes can lead to healthier relationships and better self-care. The final step is rehearsing! Setting boundaries takes practice, especially when loved ones are involved. Brown recommends practicing saying, “I can’t take that on” or “My plate is full.” Ideally, it will then be more natural (albeit still uncomfortable) when the time comes to say it in conversation.
When this is the case, ask your anxiety to take a back seat, and instead remain calm as you explain your circumstances. Enter the space with a sense of reasoning and compassion. Setting this tone may in turn allow your loved one to show up in the same manner. Dismiss any assumptions of what may transpire and speak directly to their highest self. By maintaining your own peace, your loved one will likely move away from the defense. After all, this is not an attack on them, but rather a simple and entirely healthy request.
Still, despite your calm stance, others may not have the tools to show up to the conversation with reciprocating love and respect. As challenging as it may be to speak your truth when your “no” is met with a harsh rebuttal, know that it’s necessary for you to follow through. Remind yourself that your needs are of equal importance. Your job is not—now or ever—to please everyone. It’s okay if your friend or family member finds the new boundary upsetting. Why? Because they will get over it in time.
The final consideration is knowing your audience. Not everyone will deserve a detailed explanation of why you feel the way you do. If you know the recipient is someone who has a tendency to be hurtful or manipulative, it’s perfectly acceptable to set your boundary and walk away from the conversation. As imperative as it is to use your voice, it’s equally important to protect your sacred space.

Keeping up With Self-Care

Boundaries are an essential aspect of self-care, however, there are additional practices you can incorporate to stay on top of a comprehensive self-care regimen. The APA’s holiday stress report explains that women are prone to neglecting their self-care habits during the holidays. Although self-care is often associated with things like painting your nails and getting massages, it doesn’t have to begin or end there.
Self-care also involves appreciating the validity of your emotions, practicing the power of “no” as often as you rejoice in “yes,” knowing the importance of days off of bustling, eating body- and soul-nourishing foods, reveling in a grounding yoga flow, and throwing you hair up in a messy bun while your skin enjoys a calming face mask.
Merging self-care and the benefits of exercise may be exactly what you need. If you’re feeling the need to ramp up the intensity instead of following your usual yoga practice, try fitting in a quick kettlebell workout. In just 20 to 30 minutes, your body will reap maximum benefits. Another option is to head to your local ice skating rink. Lace up your skates and practice a few dozen figure eights to get your sweat on in holiday style. If you need a family-friendly activity, this is a perfect option! With the guaranteed laughs, your stress levels are sure to drop.
One final note: Don’t neglect the importance of breathing! Yes, friends—self-care can be as simple as practicing breath work. When our anxiety gets the best of us, we often fail to give enough attention to this fundamental task. As you gear up for the holidays, try implementing a regular mediation practice. What many of us need most is a reason to slow down, and meditation provides exactly that.
If you aren’t in a space to meditate, start with taking just five minutes out of your day. When you’re feeling the brunt of the stress, slow your breathing. Start to count your inhalations and exhalations. Practice counting to five during your inhale, pausing, and exhaling at the same speed. Allow the anxious thoughts to fall away as you concentrate only on your breath and the physical sensations you experience while consciously inhaling and exhaling. This will offer you a much-need reprieve, and the best part? It can easily be done on the go.
As stressful as the holidays may be, creating space for your  personal well-being is the best gift you can give yourself this season.

Is There A Right Time To Tell Your Kids About Santa?

I still remember sobbing the first year I found out that there was no such thing as Santa. I was one of the children who believed wholeheartedly, not paying any mind to peers who told me that parents put all the presents beneath the tree. After all, I told myself, there’s no way my parents would get that many presents!
When I asked my mom before the Christmas when I was 9, she turned the question back on me: “Do you think it’s me or Dad, or do you think it’s Santa?”
I didn’t want the magic to stop. “Santa?” I said hopefully, and she gently shook her head no.
Although I was devastated at first, I soon began to take joy from being in on the secret and helping to create the magic for my younger siblings and cousins. Still, as each of them found out in turn, I saw my own heartbreak reflected in theirs.
As a parent of a 3-year-old, I now wonder if there is a right time to tell kids about Santa. I love watching my daughter’s face light up at the idea of the magical man who brings presents, but I know one day she’ll be sad to discover that the myth makes no sense.
Of course, the right time will depend on your family and how you’ve taught the tradition of Santa. But we’ve got some information and ideas that might make the transition a bit easier for both parent and child.

Is there a right time?

There is no hard and fast “right time” to tell your children the truth about Santa. Some skeptical little ones might come to the realization on their own, whereas others might cling to the belief even when you’re certain they know it isn’t wholly true.
There is a wide range in the age when kids realize that Santa is a myth, but a 2017 poll from Saint Leo University found that the average age when people believe it’s appropriate for parents to tell their kids the truth about Santa is about 9 years old (8.95 years old to be exact). Knowing what other parents are doing can be a good guideline for parents who are unsure when to confront the issue.

You might not need to tell at all.

Susan Groner, founder of the Parenting Mentor, says that parents don’t need to worry too much about telling their children the truth. Instead there can be a gradual shift over time.
“There is a fine line between the truth and make-believe, but I suggest erring on the latter as long as possible,” she says. “As children get a little older and start to wonder about the reality of it all, there can be an interlude of ‘suspended belief.’ A child may think ‘I’m not really buying into the whole Santa and the reindeer thing, how one rather plump man can slide down the chimney but I’m not going to question it quite yet.’”
If your child seems on the fence or you worry they may be too old to believe, just follow their lead. They’ll come to you if they want answers, but if they don’t, they may still be having fun playing along with the Christmas myth, Groner says.
“I would never kill that joy with a preemptive conversation of reality,” she says. “That all happens soon enough.”

What if they ask when they’re still very young?

Many parents grapple with the idea of lying to their children when they’re asked directly whether Santa is real. If a 9-year-old asks, he or she might be ready for the answer—but if your 4-year-old asks after hearing on the preschool playground that Santa is not real, you might want to evade the question a bit.
“When asked if Santa is real or if you as a parent believe in him, try ‘I like to believe in Santa. It’s fun!’” Groner suggests. Or tell kids that Santa represents the spirit of Christmas. That way you are telling the truth without ruining your child’s belief too soon.

Make kids the next Santa.

If your child discovers that Santa is not real, a good way to help them through the transition is by encouraging them to keep the myth alive for others. Parenting expert Cherie Corso says this is a developmentally appropriate way for kids to work through their grief.
“By showing younger people how to be generous, it’s good for their psychological state, for their imagination, curiosity, and believing in a higher being,” she says.
If your child has younger siblings or cousins, incorporate him or her into choosing presents for the little ones. If not, let your child be a secret Santa to someone in your family or community. Seeing the recipient delight in the gift their “Santa” brought will teach your child that there really is as much joy in giving as there is in receiving—and that’s what the Santa tradition is all about.

Tips For A Holiday Season That’s Simple And Sustainable

Excess. It’s a word we hear a lot around the holidays. Excessive eating. Excessive spending. Excessive baking.
Excessive waste.
By some estimates, Americans throw out 25 percent more trash in the stretch between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than we do during any other time of the year.
Excess makes the holiday season fun, but it can also cause holiday stress … not to mention leave a heavy dent in the environment. If you’re already cringing over the post-holiday trash piles to come, it may be time to cut back just a wee bit.
But can you really stop the holiday train after it’s left the North Pole station? Oh, just wait…

The Gifts

If you’ve been scratching your head, wondering what to buy for people on your list, now is the time to give yourself a break. Guessing at gifts is a recipe for loading up the landfill, as yet another well-meant candle or body lotion is quietly dropped in the wastebasket by its recipient.
If you want to cut both your stress level and the growing mound of trash, consider asking your family to throw everyone’s name in a hat this year. Each member can pick just one other person to buy for, reducing the number of “maybe they’ll like it, maybe not” gifts you have to find.
Not a fan of picking recipients out of a hat? Suggest that everyone put together wish lists on Amazon. They may not get everything they want this year, but the chances that they’ll receive something they actually need will skyrocket, and you won’t have to worry about the item you order landing in the wastebasket.
Or you can opt out of “things” entirely! Take a page out of a study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology and give your friends and family “experiences” in place of physical gifts this year. The study’s researchers found that people are actually happier receiving “experiential” gifts, and they think they’re a better use of money, too.

The Shopping

If you’re headed to the mall this year, grab your reusable bags, then pick up that phone and dial a friend before you head out. Carpooling has long been touted as an earth-friendly way to get around, and the science backs up the theory. Even better, when you shop with a friend, you’re turning one of the holiday season’s biggest stressors into an opportunity for healthy socializing and self care.
Shopping online will cut your drive out of the equation, but you’ll need to factor in the delivery truck’s gas and emissions. That said, if you’re given the option to have packages shipped to you as they’re ready or all at once, choose option number two. Mother Nature will appreciate it!

The Wrapping

Gift wrap tends to pile up around the tree on Christmas morning, only to be shoved in a trash bag and taken out to the curb since the dye, lamination, and thinness renders much of it unfit for recycling. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Old newspapers—especially the comics—make for fun, retro wrapping that can be recycled after every package has been ripped open. Add some pretty ribbon (also reusable!) or bakery string to tie the look together.
Oddly-shaped presents that don’t lend themselves to paper wrapping can be placed in reusable bags for the gift recipient to use again and and again. Or you can try your hand at Japanese Furoshiki fabric wrapping this year to really wow your friends (and recycle that old fabric you have lying around).

The Cards

Emails, social media, and even texting can be an easy way to make contact with friends and family this time of year, and it can take a load off your shoulder while saving a few trees.
Sure, you have friends and family who expect that photo card every year, and you can still send those. Even cutting your list in half by taking advantage of digital means of connecting does its part for the environment. Just make sure the cards you do buy are printed on recycled paper.
As for the cards you receive, don’t trash them at the end of the season! The fronts of traditional cards can be reused by crafters, so ask your local senior center or art and pre-school teachers if they could use a pile. Take any photo cards and stash them in an album—they’ll be fun to look back at in years to come.
