4 Beauty Staples From Cleopatra's Time That Lived On (And One That Should Stay Hidden Away)

Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator, “The Father-Loving Goddess,” queen of Egypt, beloved of emperors, leader of armies, muse of Shakespeare and Elizabeth Taylor, lived near the banks of the Mediterranean Sea more than 2,000 years ago. She warred with her princeling brother for Egypt’s throne and won with an assist from a few Roman legions, courtesy of a boyfriend named Caesar. After two decades of absolute power, Cleopatra took her own life for love—or so the story goes.
Plus, she was beautiful. Like, historically beautiful. Who better to turn to for beauty secrets than the woman who captured the hearts of Julius Caesar and Marc Antony?

iStock.com/The Hollywood Reporter

Cleopatra probably took some beauty secrets with her to the as-yet-undiscovered grave, but we do know this: She was a woman of her time. Egyptians of the 1st century B.C. were as obsessed with skincare and cosmetics as any contemporary Kardashian. They had it all: perfumes, cleansers, ointments for zits and wrinkles, fingernail polish, and, of course, eyeliner. You know that winged eyeliner trick that’s so hard to get right in real life? The ancient Egyptians invented that look.
https://twitter.com/MeltCosmetics/status/830153280932106240
But not everything in Cleopatra’s makeup kit would work for us these days. Styles change by the season, and we’re talking about millennia—plural. Today, we investigate the ways Cleopatra kept her skin in emperor-tempting, kingdom-ruling shape:

1. The Original Winged Eyeliner

Cleopatra couldn’t take a selfie, but she did have legions of artisans to paint her image on frescoes and sculpt it in bas relief. Look at any example of ancient Egyptian portraiture and you’re bound to notice something about the eyes. They look like Sophia Loren. They look like Amy Winehouse—men, women, and gods alike. The ancient Egyptians perfected the art of winged eyeliner.

HISTORY

But lacking Maybelline, what did they use to create the perfect cat’s eye? Powdered galena, wrote historian Lionel Casson in Everyday Life in Ancient Egypt. They’d grind up the lead-based metal and mix it with fats or oils or resins to create a thick, dark goo that functioned as eyeliner and mascara in one. It’s called kohl.
Historians are starting to think kohl was good for more than beauty, too. Researchers found that lead sulfites in the cosmetic spur a natural immune response, according to Discover magazine. Cleopatra’s eyeliner wasn’t just makeup. It was an antibiotic.
Smith College

That’d be pretty attractive to the people of the Nile River Valley, who were prone to bacterial eye infections with the annual floods. If you’re thinking of digging up some lead and grinding your own kohl, though, think again. You’re better off with something from the cosmetics aisle.
“Lead is most dangerous to growing children because it can cause severe anemia,” points out Tanya Kormeili, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Santa Monica. “I would not recommend having anything with high lead around if you have kids. Otherwise, it is unclear how much it would absorb through the skin, but high levels of heavy metals (especially mercury) are proven to be toxic to all humans.”
National Geographic

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration agrees. In some parts of North Africa and Central Asia, people still make kohl the old-fashioned way. It occasionally gets into the U.S. market under a variety of names: kohl, tiro, surma, kajal, kwalli. The FDA headline on the subject offers a stern warning: “By Any Name, Beware of Lead Poisoning.”
The FDA is serious about the threat. They set an import alert for products that use the terms kohl, kajal, or surma on their labels. This is one ancient cosmetic that belongs in the past. If you’re prone to eye infections, there are antibiotic drops for that. Modernity does get some things right—leave this one buried.

2. From Cleopatra to Cara Delevingne

The recent move toward a full-eyebrowed look would have been familiar to Egypt’s most famous queen. Women of Cleopatra’s time filled out their brows with charred almonds, per Marie Claire. This little trick isn’t relegated to years that end in B.C., either.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BZmX_0Ql4eT/?taken-by=caradelevingne
“My late grandmother used various nuts for makeup!” Kormeili tells HealthyWay. “The key is to slightly charcoalize the nut over a flame until it is black. The black ‘ink’ is a natural product used for eyeliner and pencil. It is natural and organic.”
But what if Cleopatra wanted a little more color? That’s when she’d touch up her brows with powdered malachite, a copper ore with a green tint, wrote Casson. Cosmetics manufacturers use copper powder in their products to this day, according to CosmeticsInfo.org. You could be putting on your face like Cleopatra already!

3. A Soak of Milk and Honey

“Age cannot wither her,” Shakespeare wrote of Cleopatra. Today’s dermatologists might have figured out the secret of the queen’s famed agelessness.
“Cleopatra’s famed baths in the milk from [donkeys] is well known,” says dermatologist Sonam Yadov, MBBS. “The scientific basis is still in use today: The lactic acid in sour milk is an exfoliating and skin-brightening agent. Thus, her milk baths were just an ancient and effective ‘chemical peel.’ Today, we use the same lactic acid, just in more purified and concentrated forms in our offices.”
The “Father-Loving Goddess” might have mixed honey into her milk baths, according to popular legend (and about a thousand beauty blogs). That makes sense to Kormeili. She touts the skincare properties of milk and honey both.
“It is interesting that thousands of years later we are doing this and getting great results,” the dermatologist tells HealthyWay. “There are new studies to suggest that honey has both antibacterial and wound-healing properties. As such, I am using it on my surgery patients post-op! As for the milk baths, we [use] lactic acid in a variety of skin peels and products for exfoliation and skin brightening.”

Kormeili should know. She’s on the forefront of the dermatological use of lactic acid, an organic compound that comes from soured milk.
“I am currently working on an office procedure that would involve using lactic acid with a variety of other natural acids for skin brightening and melasma,” she says. “None of my patients would want to soak in a tub of milk. It is easier to get it at my office!”

4. Lipstick from the Pharaoh’s Tomb

Today, you can head to the nearest Walgreens and find lipsticks in every shade from “dusty lilac” to “warm tangerine.” Cleopatra’s lip coloring of choice would be right at home on that shelf. It’d be called “red ochre.”

Iron oxide gives powdered red ochre a rich crimson flush. Ancient cosmetologists would mix this pigment with grease or tallow to make a bright, kissable paste that Marc Antony’s wife back in Rome probably discovered on his shirt collar (if ancient Romans had shirt collars).
Oh, and Cleopatra’s people also invented a surprisingly familiar beauty hack. “Use your lipstick as blush,” the makeup bloggers say. “It’ll look great!”

Thutmose, “Nefertiti Bust” (1345 B.C.)

Whether you’ve been able to pull that trick off or always end up looking like Raggedy Ann instead, Cleopatra got there first. She didn’t just use red ochre on her lips, reported Marie Claire. She also rubbed it into her cheeks for a bit of definition.

5. The Mani-Pedi of the Gods

No modern woman would neglect her nails. Neither would an ancient queen. Women today don polish, shellac, gel, acrylic; women of Cleopatra’s time tinted their fingernails and toenails with henna, giving them a gorgeous scarlet glow, wrote Casson.
It might not have been a gel manicure with intricate design work, but it did the trick. Even better, henna is generally safe for adults when used topically, as in cosmetics, according to WebMD. At least the women of ancient Egypt could tint their nails without ingesting paint-chip quantities of lead.

Want to try this yourself? Go ahead! There are lots of great YouTube tutorials to get you started. We’re fans of the one above.

The Cosmology of Cosmetology

If Cleopatra were to march out of a pyramid and into the modern world, we doubt she’d be surprised by today’s makeup counter. While specific styles grow and evolve and devolve and come back before disappearing again, everyone wants to look good—preferably good enough to catch the eye, if not the heart, of the most powerful ruler on the planet.
“I think the lesson is that human bodies have not changed that much,” says Kormeili. “Neither has our desire for beauty and health!”
https://twitter.com/AwesomeANTJAY/status/922177920084221952
That’s not all we’ve borrowed from history, either. You can’t always get the look you desire with YouTube tutorials and Sephora catalogs. Even ancient Egyptians had their beauty experts, although they tended to double as physicians.
“I would recommend patients seek expert help if they are trying to improve things,” says Kormeili. “In the Egyptian times, there were ‘natural healers’ and ‘medicine men’ who would come up with the treatments. The average person did not ‘google’ ideas and do trial and error. The mistakes with skin can be so expensive to fix.”
That’s wisdom for the ages.

Citizen’s Mark: A Startup That’s Crowdfunding Sustainable Workwear To Take On Fast Fashion

We get why people like fast fashion: It’s trendy, it’s accessible, and it’s cheap. But as more stories come out about working conditions in factories and the impact that these mega-retailers are having on Mother Earth, buying fast fashion is starting to feel a bit indefensible. How can we claim to be interested in social justice and environmental consciousness but still contribute to the insane carbon footprint the fashion industry has?
Enter socially responsible clothing. More and more people are considering their social views when they head to market, allowing ethical fashion brands their place in the spotlight, and it seems that the movement is here to stay.
One of these brands is Citizen’s Mark, a fashion startup founded by former UN policy official Cynthia Salim. Salim started the company when she realized that while men have no shortage of professional workwear options, the same cannot be said for women’s wear. After speaking to women, all of whom were searching for a high-quality, go-to piece for their wardrobes, Salim got to work creating Citizen’s Mark much-talked-about blazer. Citizen’s Mark has been committed to responsible quality since day one: the blazers—available on their website—are made by hand in a solar-powered Portuguese factory that pays its workers living wages. Salim also hand-sourced every element of the jackets: From the wool, which is made in a mill that prioritizes water conservation, to the biodegradable cotton seed lining to the buttons made by hand in Nepal, she made sure that each material choice reflected Citizen’s Mark’s values of responsibility, sustainability, and transparency.
Not content to stop there, Salim’s onto her next project, which she’s taken to Kickstarter for grass roots funding. The Better Than Silk blouse is a machine-washable (!) blouse made from lyocell, an extremely eco-friendly fabric. Salim says, “We spent a year with our industry-leading weaving partner in Switzerland tweaking multiple technical weaving factors to make [the lyocell] drape like silk.” There are long-sleeved and sleeveless versions available, making this workwear staple a year-round necessity.
We spoke to Salim about the Better Than Silk collection, how Citizen’s Mark is responding to the fast fashion industry, and why she’s using Kickstarter to bring ethical fashion to the masses.
HealthyWay
HealthyWay: Can you tell us more about the materials you’re using for the Better Than Silk shirt?
Salim: Better Than Silk is made of 100 percent lyocell, which is sustainably forested tree fiber from Austria. It’s actually an eco-fashion staple, but it’s always made into t-shirts and blankets, never anything as luxurious as silk—until now.
I spent a year convincing suppliers that it can and should be done, and that’s how we ended up with Better Than Silk. It’s a miracle eco-fiber that finally looks luxurious enough to wear to work. Lyocell is biodegradable, made in a closed-loop production process, and breathable and moisture wicking (unlike silk, which traps heat).
You’re so involved in every step of your production process. Can you tell us the details of how this shirt is being made, and why you made the choices you did?
We started with lyocell because it’s hands down one of the most sustainable materials in the industry. Plus, it’s incredibly soft, breathable, and comfortable. The trick was giving this eco-fiber a luxury makeover. Once we picked this raw material, I had to convince weavers (the next step in the process) to spend the time with me to make it look like silk. I had to explain that working women pretty much have to choose between silk (which is dry-clean intensive) or polyester (which never biodegrades).
We adjusted yarn type, weight, density, finishing—about a dozen technical decisions—and did several trial weaves before we got to the final result. Then we headed to our factory in Portugal to get it set up for production in a living wage factory.
HealthyWay
I think it’s so exciting for people interested in the process of fashion design to have a chance to be involved in a launch campaign. What made you decide to use Kickstarter to fund production?
Launching on Kickstarter means we get to answer to our customers and community instead of speed and margins-driven investors. In a message to our community, I wrote: “We’ve never been a margins-driven, venture-backed engine for wealth creation. We’re a values-driven, community-backed engine for change. And we’d like to keep it that way. That’s why, after one year of developing Better Than Silk, we’re asking you to join us in making this a reality by backing our Kickstarter campaign.”
What was your original vision for Citizen’s Mark? How has it grown beyond that initial idea?
I was so surprised by how Citizen’s Mark evolved! I thought people would like the product but hesitate because we’re a new brand. It turned out to be the opposite. People really identified with the brand and values, but many were looking for something at a lower price point than our super boardroom-ready Italian wool blazer. That’s one of the reasons we created Better Than Silk, a really versatile product that our growing community wanted.
Fashion has always been an important tool for women who want to send a message. What message do you want Citizen’s Mark to send, and how do you keep that in mind as you’re designing?
We design to project credibility, and I think that’s a really interesting design philosophy. When you think of brand identities, you can think of a lot of brands that embody hip, cool, sexy, edgy, and these other human dimensions really well, but people rarely design for women to look credible.
That’s what I think about when I look at a design: Would I think this woman is credible?
Can you share your thoughts on the evolution of the fast fashion market and where ethically produced items fit into that production cycle?
I think we’re moving in the direction of timeless classics from a trend perspective, which will really help us move away from fast fashion. Fast fashion is about planned obsolescence, where brands plan for something to become obsolete or out of date to make you buy another one. We operate in a completely opposite way, where we want to make one thing that you never have to re-buy.
Of course, that feeds into price because of the quality measures that go into it, but I think we’re all slowly moving towards more sustainable apparel purchases.
HealthyWay
Pricing and availability are just two barriers to entry for people who are interested in moving beyond fast fashion. How do you see Citizen’s Mark breaking down those walls for women?
This is a huge, huge issue we’re working to tackle. There’s a minimum price that we do need to pay to ensure people get fair wages throughout the supply chain. But beyond that, we’re also a premium brand, so our prices don’t just reflect the sustainable choices we make, but also the fact that we picked really nice sustainable things. But I completely understand that price is a valid issue.
That’s also why we’re launching on Kickstarter and planning to continue to offer pre-order options—it gives consumers a chance to get 40 percent off in exchange for waiting a little bit for a timeless product anyway, it reduces inventory waste, and it allows you to be our banker, so we can answer to you in terms of values and mission alignment.
How can women make socially responsible shopping choices while still keeping their budgets in mind?
Of course some things are just beyond our budgets, but when I make a big quality purchase or social responsibility purchase, I think about what price multiple makes sense for me. For example, if I buy a coat that I know I’ll wear three times more than my regular cheap coat, or last three times longer, then three times the price of my regular coat is my budget limit.
HealthyWay
What does the name Citizen’s Mark mean to you?
I think of all of us as citizens before consumers. That’s why the name Citizen’s Mark, and the idea of citizens making their mark through their everyday actions, is meaningful to us.
Can you tell us more about the Premium Essentials collection?
Better Than Silk is the beginning of our Premium Essentials collection, a collection of wardrobe MVPs that will last an entire phase of your career and reflect our values as socially conscious and empowered women on the rise.
What are some of your favorite ethical clothing brands (besides Citizen’s Mark of course!)?
I’m a big Stella McCartney fan and love Patagonia.
Let’s say someone wants to talk about your products with her friend: What’s your “elevator pitch” for Citizen’s Mark and the Better Than Silk shirt?
“It’s like your favorite silk blouse, but machine-washable. Can you even believe we still have to dry-clean our silk tops?!”
To pre-order a Better Than Silk shirt for 40 percent off planned retail price, support Citizen’s Mark’s Kickstarter campaign.

1st Phorm Elite Athlete Jenna Fail

Looking at her now, it’s difficult to envision that Jenna Fail was once a 20-year-old housewife who felt unfulfilled and unmotivated, but she’ll be the first to tell you that a life of self-doubt and anxiety was once her reality. That is, until she attended a meet-and-greet event for bodybuilder Jay Cutler with her husband, Chris.
As she entered the event, Jenna couldn’t help but notice the women in attendance who wore their crop tops confidently–showing off their hard-earned physiques. It was right then and there that Jenna decided she would look like those women one day, and the course of her life changed forever.
As she began training, Jenna realized that she had the power not only to shape her body, but also her mind. Her newfound self-confidence permeated into all aspects of her life.
Just six years after that meet and greet, Jenna is a 4x NPC National Qualifier, 1st Phorm Elite Athlete and Elite Trainer, and the 1st Phorm 2017 Athlete of the Year. Despite having earned her success, Jenna is still as humble and kind as ever with a smile that can light up any room. She knows firsthand that if you change your mindset, you can change your life, and she’s made it a priority to share her journey to help others realize their worth and personal power.
Jenna’s journey hasn’t been an easy one, especially after she and her husband lost everything they owned, including their beloved pets Moose and Rocky, to a tragic house fire in 2017. As someone who has followed Jenna on social media for a couple of years now, I’ll never forget reading her Instagram post last March as tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn’t even begin to fathom her pain and heartbreak, yet Jenna, who was actually experiencing the loss, kept looking for light and positivity and remained grateful, which only caused me to admire her more.
While Jenna’s physical strength is undeniable, it’s her mental fortitude that impresses us the most. “I can tell you the most beautiful stories out of tragedies in my life only because I look for the good. The story never changed, only my perception & willingness to make something positive out of a negative,” she shared on Instagram.
Jenna is a constant reminder that things aren’t always as bad as they seem and that positivity and kindness can go a long way. If you’re feeling unfulfilled and are looking to change your life, I suggest looking to Jenna for inspiration. Don’t be afraid to start today, even if it’s just a small step!

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

My daily routine varies day to day, but typically it’s something like: Wake up. Love on my animals a bit before getting out of bed. I keep my “Jesus Calling” devotional by my bedside and usually read my page before getting up. Then I prepare breakfast and have my coffee. I try to relax and give myself a quiet few minutes before jumping into work, but it never fails that I drink my coffee cold because I’ll answer just this one email while my eggs cook, which turns into many emails, and before I know it, iced coffee! Somedays I tell myself, “Jenna, you will finish this coffee hot this morning!” Goals!
From there, I continue on with emails, messages, and my Team Fail group while planning what I want to talk about or share on social media that day. After a few hours, I’ll eat again and then do my hair and makeup, which I really enjoy! My first career was working as a cosmetologist, so hair and makeup is something I always enjoy! It’s also a little time that I can shut off work and solely focus on something else. From there I run whatever errands I have to do that day.
On many days, I make it a point to stop by our local antique–salvage shop. I love to restore old furniture and buy unique pieces. When shopping for things like that, you have to be on the lookout regularly because they come and go so fast! Right now my current project is an old church pew I’m restoring for our foyer!
From there, if my husband is off work, we may spend a while getting some different content—pictures, videos, et cetera. Typically we do that at least once a week.
I spend about an hour to an hour and a half in the gym five days a week. Sometimes I go early, sometimes late. It just depends on my work load and my husband’s work schedule.
In the evenings, me and my husband catch up on how our day went and usually relax with something on TV. No phone! Right now we are into American Idol. We love having a scheduled program to watch because in a way to gives us a scheduled time to sit and relax together. America’s Got Talent and American Horror Story are a few of our other faves! Luckily all these shows seem to be pretty well spaced out in the year.
Then it’s time for bed! My schedule varies greatly due to travel and whatnot, but on any relaxed, normal day, this is about it. Nothing too exciting!

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

Writing, keeping a healthy diet, eating and enjoying the occasional donut, soaking in the tub, exercising, reflecting, devotion.

How do you stay inspired?

I stay inspired by the fact that we are all here for such a short amount of time. For many that’s scary, but for me, it easily keeps me in the “why not just go for it” mindset.

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

Hands down 1st Phorm’s Opti-Greens 50! I am not the best at getting in enough vegetables each day, so having a quality product to ensure I’m giving my body all it needs to function and feel its best is amazing!

What are your favorite apps?

I am awful with apps. I am not technology savvy! I use the basic socials, and that’s about it.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

My feed its typically full of my teammates, which I love! I feed off their positive energy and hard work. I believe your social feed should be only things that are positive for you. After all, you are seeing it all day, and you become whatever you surround yourself with. I also follow many animal pages for a laugh and smile throughout my day!

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Always listening to the MFCEO Project podcast and Food In Session podcast. They are amazing! I’m currently looking for a good book.
I’ve been hooked on watching Trading Spaces since it came back! TLC has been playing all the old episodes, and I’ve been binge watching! I also religiously watch the Baking Championships on Food Network, and Teen Mom.

Jenna IRL

If your pet could talk, how would they describe you?

Weird for sure. I read an article that said your cats feel loved if you sing them little songs that rhyme with their name. So, yeah, me and my husband sing little songs every day that we try and rhyme with Bug and Darla. The songs never make sense! That article was definitely someone playing a joke, and here I am—lookin’ like a fool! Geez!

What would the title of your autobiography be?

Life Goes On

What woman in history would you love to take to brunch?

Marilyn Monroe!

Would you rather explore space or the ocean? Why?

The ocean intrigues me more. I feel like there’s a bigger variety to see. Can you believe that of all the books and exploring we’ve done, 95 percent of the ocean remains unexplored? Thats crazy! It’s a very cool thought, but also pretty scary! What’s in there?!

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

When I was growing up, my mom always said, “Suck it up and tough it out!” When I was little, I didn’t like when she said that. I just wanted to whine, but now as an adult I see how true it is. It’s nice for “Shut up and do the work.”

The Year Of You: Wedding Trends To Watch For In 2018

Nothing says true love quite like a photo op with an alpaca, am I right? And even though it might be a stretch to say alpacas are the new symbol of holy matrimony, they’re getting invited to a surprising amount of weddings these days.

One newly married couple shared the spotlight with an alpaca in 2015, captured by wedding photographers at The Shalom Imaginative. A year earlier, alpacas had the honor of being featured as guests in a “bohemian-inspired” wedding shoot by Blue Eyed Yonder and Our Labor of Love.
[pullquote align=”center”]“[With modern weddings,] people want something different, they want magic, and they want to celebrate in a special way.
—Niall Kelly[/pullquote]
Lifestyle website Brit+CO is calling llamas the latest trend in weddings, but it’s hard to say if this quirky wedding feature will be as common as doves anytime soon. What stories like this do highlight, however, is one massive trend steering wedding planning in 2018: personalization.

All About You

“It’s your big day.”
How many brides have heard this phrase repeated endlessly throughout the wedding process? Whether they’re facing an opinionated in-law, stressing over the budget, or just trying to decide on their color palette, friends and family are quick to remind couples that their happiness is top priority.

Now more than ever, weddings are being planned around the unique personalities, beliefs, and convictions of the engaged couple. In The Knot’s 2017 Real Weddings Survey, 64 percent of couples planning their weddings said decisions about their day were centered around personalization.
And thanks to the role of social media in wedding planning, we get a front row seat to watch how these amazingly personalized weddings are playing out.

iStock.com/freemixer

“Weddings are just all about the personal touches now,” says Leah Gunn Emerick, a wedding photographer and self-proclaimed professional wedding attender. “That can lend itself to some unusual situations just off of what is personal to the couple. Think having a bacon and bourbon tasting table instead of a regular bar and appetizer situation.”

From Fairytales to Fantasy

As more couples lean toward the personal, theme weddings are becoming more inventive than ever. Couples are taking a note from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, planning royal weddings of their own.
Theme weddings aren’t exclusive to admirers of the British throne. Steampunk and Star Wars weddings are a couple of the most unusual weddings Janessa White, elopement planner at Simply Eloped, has recently planned. A future bride of hers, White says, will be bringing her cat to her small ceremony. White believes that engaged couples are becoming more aware of their options, thanks to PR efforts, viral content, and influencer marketing.

“People want something different, they want magic, and they want to celebrate in a special way,” explains Niall Kelly, a representative from Kilkea Castle, which has become a venue for fairy tale and Game of Thrones–themed weddings.

Getting Hitched for the ‘Gram

Photography has long been an integral part of weddings, with professional photographers and prop-filled photo booths helping chronicle the festivities, but in recent years, nuptial celebrations have become firmly embedded in social media.
Sixty-four percent of couples in 2017 reported creating a hashtag and asking their guest to use it to tag pictures from their big day, according to The Knot’s survey. Photo booths are changing with the times, says Maggie Lynn Hummel, an event planner with Terrace on Grand: Instead of printing the snapshots right then and there, photo booth providers are linking their booths to social media for people to tag and repost.

iStock.com/PeopleImages

One interesting new development, however, is the rise of the unplugged wedding—that is, weddings without electronics. Kristin Maxwell Cooper, the editor-in-chief of The Knot, was quoted by Brit+CO as saying this trend is experiencing an uptick, and Hummel notes this as well.

“They are usually putting up a sign and then announcing it before the ceremony,” explains Hummel, noting that phones are fair game once the ceremony comes to a close. “No one wants photos of everyone on their phones during the ceremony.”

Running Away Together

As more couples consider what they want most from their wedding day, more couples are making plans to elope. And we’re not talking about your run-of-the-mill weekend trip to Las Vegas with an officiant in a bedazzled jumpsuit, says White. Instead, she describes a highly personalized hybrid of an elopement and a destination wedding.

iStock.com/mixetto

Although there aren’t clear statistics on how many couples are eloping each year, The New York Times reported that the popularity of the choice can be attributed to the rising cost of weddings along with the complications that come with planning a large wedding. When you consider that The Knot found that the average wedding is setting couples back by $35,329, this choice completely makes sense.
According to White, brides and grooms aren’t making this decision on a whim. These are couples who have considered their personalities and their circumstances, sometimes years in advance, and have decided that an elopement is far superior to the stress of a traditional wedding.
https://twitter.com/flylikerobin_/status/814342059096207360
“We have people reach out to as far out as 2020,” she explains. “To be honest, rarely do the 48-hour, we-want-to get-married-this weekend [weddings] work out.”

The Small Things (That Add Up)

Not all wedding-planning decisions are about high-level stuff—being big, bold, or making a splash on social media. Make no mistake, the bulk of the decisions are grounded in the little details. For every conversation about the theme and the hashtag, there are ten more about, say, what will end up on the guest’s tables.
The most popular decor pieces and color palettes vary by the year, and 2018’s trends seem to be about returning to simpler times—and simpler parties.

“Once seen as corny and dated,” says Meghan Brumbley, owner and lead wedding planner at D.C. Engaged, “balloons are making a comeback this year.”
Indeed, balloons have expanded beyond birthday and New Year’s parties, according to Brides magazine, and they’re being implemented into weddings in creative ways. Instead of being used for for archways or on the getaway car, they’re being used by brides to create photo backdrops, table garlands, and place settings.
[pullquote align=”center”]A lot of brides are going simple. …It used to be everything needed to be very flashy, and everyone is really reeling that back now.
—Maggie Lynn Hummel[/pullquote]
For those concerned for the environment: Balloons were recently banned in Block Island, Rhode Island, after discarded, non-biodegradable balloons became an environmental nuisance in the town, reported The Boston Globe. If you want balloons in your ceremony, consider these biodegradable wedding balloons.
Color palettes are less flashy this year, too.
“A lot of brides are going simple,” says Hummel. “Ivories, light pinks, greenery, and maybe a hint of gold or rose gold. It used to be everything needed to be very flashy, and everyone is really reeling that back now.”

Etsy.com/SweetTeaPaper

Wedding favors aren’t taking priority this year, wrote Lauren Kay of The Knot. Instead of sending their guests home with a treat or gift, engaged couples are spending more money on making sure that the wedding experience is something their guests will remember fondly for long time.

An Unforgettable Experience

The desire to create a personalized, unforgettable experience is driving up the prices of weddings. Wedding are getting smaller, but engaged couples are spending more per guest than they have in years past. The average cost per wedding guest was $268 this past year, compared to $194 in 2009, according to The Knot’s survey.
“A lot of our brides are also thinking about their guests a lot more,” shares Hummel, who says that guest counts have dropped drastically at her venue in the last year. “They want good food, a good bar, and good music.”

iStock.com/Paul Bradbury

A smaller guest list allows for a more elaborate and unique experience, with musical entertainment, fireworks, sparklers, and photo booths taking the lead as the most popular experiential additions to 2018 weddings. More elaborate additions include magicians, comedians, and multiple musicians throughout the night.
“I recently attended a wedding where a man on stilts came out when everyone was dancing,” shares Kelsey Bowen, blogger at Little Things Favors. “He was dressed in all black and had an LED-light costume on. So there was this huge, light up robot looking thing dancing on the floor.”

If a dancing robot isn’t your style, consider that some couples are blazing their own trails by booking adventure weddings. White has seen couples who’ve planned their ceremony on the summit of a mountain; they hike the mountain together and meet their family and officiants at the top.

Planning a wedding is certainly an undertaking.

For many couples, it will be the most elaborate event they plan in their lifetime. With countless decisions and ample pressure to please everyone involved, it is easy to be overcome by the stress of the planning. If there is anything to learn from the weddings so far in 2018, it’s that today’s weddings place importance on the expression of the couples’ individuality.
The freedom to plan the wedding you want, whether it’s an elopement or an elaborate event, is yours. Bring an alpaca if you want to.

Editor's Picks: Spring-Inspired Pieces To Freshen Up Your Home

[noads]
Hey friends!
Spring has sprung—finally! It’s the season of rebirth and brings a fresh, fun newness that I desperately need after a long, Midwest winter. And while I’m excited to finally spend time outside, I’m still a homebody at heart and I like to make sure my space is decked out for lazy weeknights in, lounging in my backyard, and dinner parties with friends.
I’ve put together a list of what I’m looking at to help get my home into the swing of spring; you’ll be happy to know most of my picks are sustainable! Throw open those windows, bring in the fresh air and sunlight, and dig in for options that’ll spruce up your whole house.
HealthyWaySenior Lifestyle Editor[/noads]

Living Room

One of my favorite ways to give my living room a seasonal facelift is with new throw pillows. (Can you ever have too many?) This season I’m especially feeling lush fabrics, touchable textures, and rich colors. Target’s newest home line, Opal House, checks all three boxes for me with this pleated velvet oversized lumbar pillow; the citron color will go especially well with my navy Chesterfield couch and is sure to be a sunny spot on a cloudy spring day.
Now let’s make like Lil Jon and head to the window, to the wall. I’m a true believer in the power of fresh air, so until the humidity of Midwest summers takes over, I keep my windows open day and night. To give my house the laid-back feeling I’m looking for this spring, I’m hanging white linen sheers on my windows. I’m excited about these linen curtains; they’re handmade in Lithuania from 100 percent organic linen, so it’s a pretty purchase you can feel good about.
If your walls are feeling a little stale, hanging new art is an easy fix. You can print out your favorite snaps from the past year and hang them in the float frame from internet fave Artifact Uprising, or go budget friendly with something from IKEA—a few of the Virserum frames are perfect for curating a gallery wall.
If you’re looking for something a little more elevated, I always recommend Society6. Everything on the site is made by independent artists and it’s great to support the little guy. I’ve got my eye on rich photography, simple line work, and abstract landscapes.

Kitchen + Dining

I love having friends over when the weather gets nicer. Whether we’re sitting inside around my vintage mid-century dining table or eating out on the patio, spring dinners with my favorite people are one of the best parts of the year. Before our first get together, I’ll pick up some new tableware and glasses to get in the mood for food (as if I’m not already).
These pretty blue petite Moroccan glasses from The Little Market look perfect for warm-weather cocktails—and each purchase supports artists in Morocco.
For those al fresco nights, I’m excited to bust out these bamboo plates from Xenia Taler. They’re shatterproof, super trendy, and biodegradable. I love the bright stripes on the Marseille and Amalfi collections—at under $50 for four plates, I’m buying both sets.

Bedroom

I’m staying on the linen train with new sheets—there’s no easier way to make a change to your bedroom that looks pretty and feels indulgent. This year I’m looking at Parachute’s linen sheet set, made out of 100 percent European flax. The blush color is still on trend but is muted enough to not be overwhelming.
Even the smallest spaces need upgrades; for me, that’s my makeup corner. I don’t have a dedicated dressing room (one day!) but I do have a small space for my makeup table and accessories. If you don’t have a spot like this, create one! But don’t just pick a corner and call it a day; spruce up the space with a few accessories.
No. 1 on that list is a mirror you really love. Though I always recommend getting a dedicated makeup mirror (that 10x magnification is ideal for eyebrow tweezing adventures), hanging one like the Reese mirror from World Market will help reflect light around the room and remind you that this space is all about you—just as it should be.

Teflon Or Tefl-off? The Makeup Ingredient That's Causing A Serious Stir

When was the last time you read the ingredients label of your favorite cosmetic product?

For us, the answer is, “the last time my smartphone battery died and I didn’t have anything else to read on the subway besides the box that came with my eyeshadow.”
Unless you’re allergic to something specific, you’re likely in the same boat. Ingredient lists aren’t exactly compelling or easy to find, and if your makeup looks fab and you aren’t breaking out, you probably don’t have much of a reason to care.

iStock.com/misuma

But recently, we’ve seen a rash (yes, that’s a pun) of articles warning about a certain toxic ingredient hiding in our favorite cosmetics. We know that the beauty industry isn’t always clean, so to speak, so we keep an open mind when we hear bad news about certain products, even when we really, really want to give those products the benefit of the doubt.
This week, we’ve seen numerous reports that several makeup brands contain Teflon, which has been said to cause serious side effects, including cancer. We decided to reach out to a few experts, do some research, and find out whether we need to worry. Short answer: It’s complicated.

Are cosmetics really full of Teflon, and if so…why?

According to those aforementioned reports, a number of popular cosmetics are loaded with Teflon, a chemical best known as the coating on non-stick pans (in fact, we’re pretty sure that’s the only thing people think of when they think about Teflon).

iStock.com/zoranm

Search for “Teflon in makeup,” and you’ll find dozens of results from apparently reputable sources claiming that the substance causes birth defects and cancer. It makes for a great eye-grabbing headline, and there’s a grain of truth to the rumors; however, the full story is more complex.
First, why is everyone talking about this? As far as we can tell, the issue went mainstream when the Environmental Working Group (EWG) published an article titled “Is Teflon In Your Cosmetics?” That piece looked at polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), used in various creams and anti-aging products for its sleek feel. Spoiler alert: PTFE is the same thing as Teflon.
iStock.com/VladimirFLoyd

Essentially, cosmetics manufacturers use PTFE for the same reason that pan manufacturers use it; it gives products a slick feel that’s difficult to replicate with other substances. According to EWG’s online database, it’s found in various foundations, sunscreens, moisturizers, eye shadows, facial powders, and even mascaras. Brands that use PTFE include e.l.f., MAC Cosmetics, Olay, and many, many others.
Why is that a problem? We’ll let the EWG explain.
“Teflon is a brand name for PTFE, one of thousands of fluorinated chemicals known as PFASs or PFCs,” the piece says, “some of which have been linked to serious health effects including cancer, thyroid disease, and reduced effectiveness of childhood vaccines.”

We looked into those claims and found them to be accurate. The links in the statement above lead to government pages and scientific studies backing up the assertions; EWG did not provide the links, and to our knowledge, they weren’t necessarily referencing these specific studies in their original article.

Those sound like fairly serious side effects.

However, as you might have guessed, there’s a bit of a wrinkle here.
We reached out to the Personal Care Product Council, a national trade association representing cosmetics manufacturers. A representative forwarded us a statement from Linda Loretz, PhD, the council’s chief toxicologist, who adamantly refuted the findings of EWG.
“A recent report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) incorrectly focuses on the use of the ingredient polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE; trade name Teflon®) in cosmetics,” Loretz says in the statement. “PTFE is an ingredient used at low levels to improve the cosmetic feel of some products that are applied to the skin.”

iStock.com/vadimguzhva

“However, the safety concerns raised by EWG are about a different material called PFOA (perfluoroocatanoic acid). PFOA was used in past years as a processing aid in the manufacture of PTFE. However, PFOA is no longer used to manufacture PTFE and, thus, would never be found in a cosmetic or personal care product.”
The Personal Care Product Council didn’t respond to requests for further comment, but to summarize their position: PTFE is only dangerous if made with PFOA. (Yeah, we’re getting a little tired of the acronyms, too.) The EWG’s database doesn’t list any cosmetic products that use PFOA.
Teflon has been used in products since the 1940s, and over the past several decades, it’s been studied fairly closely. The American Cancer Society notes that “Teflon itself is not suspected of causing cancer” while also noting that PFOA has been shown in laboratory tests to increase risks of certain liver, breast, and pancreatic cancers.
iStock.com/Supersmario

We reached out to the FDA and asked whether they’ve studied this issue.
“Companies decide which tests are needed to most appropriately substantiate safety,” a spokesperson tells us via email. “However, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act does not require cosmetic companies to tell the FDA specific testing they have done or to share their safety data with the FDA. The FDA does not conduct safety assessments for every ingredient used in cosmetics, nor does the FDA have a list of ‘safe’ ingredients for use in cosmetics.”

The FDA typically only gets involved when an ingredient is creating a clear danger, and while they occasionally comment on specific ingredients, Teflon isn’t one of them.
“The FDA doesn’t have a specific position on the use of Teflon or related compounds, commonly known as perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), in cosmetics,” the representative says.

Still…it’s Teflon, right? That doesn’t seem like something you should put on your face.

You’ll have to decide for yourself whether you want to use products with PTFE, but we’re just trying to set the record straight regarding safety. The fact is that even though Teflon is, uh, Teflon, it’s not necessarily dangerous.
Toxicologist Mimi Huang, writing for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, noted that Teflon can be toxic in certain situations—for instance, when directly inhaled from an overheating pan—but it doesn’t seem to be dangerous under normal circumstances.

iStock.com/xubingruo

Unless you’re a bird (for some reason, Huang wrote, our avian friends seem particularly susceptible to Teflon), you can ingest minimal amounts of PTFE, and it’ll pass harmlessly through your system. Hey, that’s why we use it on our pans; it doesn’t stick to things.
Huang notes that PFOA can be toxic, writing that, according to research, it might “interfere with hormonal balances as well as reproduction and fetal development.” Those are serious effects, and they deserve consideration, but remember, PFOA isn’t used in the production of PTFE—not when that PTFE is used in cosmetics, anyway.
iStock.com/PeopleImages

We’re going to have a really long talk with our non-stick pans when we get home, but let’s keep following the trail. We’re looking for a fairly definitive answer: Is our eyeliner a ticking time bomb?

Even EWG provides conflicting information about the dangers of Teflon.

EWG notes on their website that PTFE (or Teflon, if you want to be slick) isn’t suspected to be bioaccumulative, meaning that it doesn’t build up in human tissues over time, and it’s not suspected to be particularly harmful. However, they classify the substance as a moderate health concern, simply because it hasn’t been studied.

iStock.com/PeopleImages

We asked Fayne Fry, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, for another opinion. After all, before we started writing this piece, the most time we’d ever spent thinking about Teflon was when we were doing the dishes after a particularly eventful omelette attempt (don’t ask).
“Harmful effects of ingredients are determined by the dose of the chemical, not by the chemical itself,” she says. “500 milligrams of Tylenol (acetaminophen) will rid your headache, while 1400 milligrams of acetaminophen can [be fatal]. Water is good for you, but six liters at a time can [be fatal].”
iStock.com/pogrebkov

She says that Teflon is a stable compound, which means that it doesn’t really interact with other substances. Hey, that’s the reason that it’s popular, right? Currently, according to Fry, there’s no good reason to assume that PTFE is harmful, at least when used in cosmetics.

So, ultimately, our sources didn’t find PTFE to be a particularly worrisome cosmetics ingredient.

If you’d like to breathe a sigh of relief and hug your makeup bag, feel free to do so.
With that said, if you decide to use cosmetic products that don’t contain Teflon, we won’t call you paranoid. The EWG contends that federal cosmetic regulations are outdated and claims that the government should ask for more research before allowing substances like Teflon in makeup. They advise consumers to avoid products with PTFE and to contact their legislators to push for better regulations.

iStock.com/zoranm

“PFAS chemicals are often listed on product labels, so you should be wary of any ingredient with ‘fluoro’ in the name,” EWG researchers David Andrews and Carla Burns wrote.
The organization notes that 66 cosmetic products include the substance, so if you have any lingering concerns about PTFE, you should be able to avoid it easily with a bit of research. In fact, we’ll make it easier: This page on EWG’s site lists all products known to have PTFE.
iStock.com/skynesher

Cosmetics frequently include scary-sounding chemicals, and as we’ve shown here, expert sources often provide conflicting information. We do agree with the EWG that more research is always a good thing, but for the time being, we’ll let the Teflon warnings slide by.

How To Stay Healthy When You Work In An Office

In my previous life as a sales manager, I worked out of a small cubicle in a windowless warehouse office.
Sterling Cooper, it was not.
We worked straight from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and just like my personal hero Dolly Parton sang, it really was all taking and no giving. We didn’t even have a break room, which was totally fine because we didn’t get a lunch break anyway. Even if we did, most of us worked through lunch—as 62 percent of American office workers do, my coworkers would snarf down midday meals between meetings and phone calls.
But I drew the line at sad desk lunch, so I just wouldn’t eat at all. I’m pretty sure my crash office diet resulted in what I can only assume was acute pancreatitis or a stomach ulcer (I can’t be sure because my job didn’t offer insurance, so I never saw a doctor. For the record, I don’t recommend self-diagnosing.).
Take it from me, ladies: Your health is more important than your work inbox.
My own wake-up call came when I read an article that said sitting is the new smoking. Gross, right?
The minute I saw that, I decided to make a change in my work life and my health life. I set reminders to drink water and move around every hour. And yes, I even started eating lunch at my desk for the sake of my health.
Now I work from home, but it’s just as easy to forgo your health in a home office. I recently noticed I was slacking in the workday health department, so I talked to Dianna Leyton, a marketing manager in Richmond, Virginia, who has also decided to make her work health a priority (all while slaying at her 9-5 job).
Here are her favorite tips for staying healthy and strong when you work in an office:

Get better sleep at night.

“If you stay up all night before a workday, you’re going to be exhausted all day long,” says Leyton. “Get a good night’s sleep, and you’ll start your day feeling fresh and energized for the day ahead.”
Leyton admits she has a hard time winding down before bedtime; to tire herself out, she makes sure to log a good workout in the evening, so she’s ready when bedtime rolls around. But if you like working out in the morning, you can still get a good night’s rest. Try to stay away from all your devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime (do-not-disturb mode can still let important and emergency calls through) and ready your mind and body for sleep with a calming bedtime yoga flow.

Practice self-care.

“Self-care during the workday is important. Sometimes I eat lunch at my desk so I can go get a mani-pedi during my lunch break or take a walk in the park,” says Leyton. “When I do something for myself during the workday, I feel better all day long.”
See? Leyton turned sad desk lunch into a rewarding experience by using her lunch break to treat herself to something fun. Think about some of your favorite relaxing activities, and figure out how to incorporate them into your workday. Simple acts of self-care can have a positive impact on the choices you make throughout the day and can even result in greater productivity at work and at home.

Get a work spouse.

“I started doing the Whole30 program with a co-worker so that we hold each other accountable over our eating habits,” says Leyton. “It makes it easier when you have someone else passing on the free Friday donuts!”
It’s true, having an accountability buddy at work can help you stay on track with diet and exercise in the office, but having a work bestie is also great for your overall work performance and mental health, according to a recent Gallup poll.
Not sure how to turn Susan in payroll into your new bff? It’s just like dating; at first, finding out which co-workers you’re most compatible with might be a little awkward, but over time, you’ll be able to forge real friendships that have lasting benefits for your health.

Take the longest route to the printer.

“I know getting your steps in sounds a little trite, but I really do try to count my steps during the workday,” says Leyton. “I take walks during lunch, and I try to take the least direct route to meetings and the copy room to maximize my step count. I just make sure to give myself extra time, so I’m not late!”
Wearing a step counter can open your eyes to how many steps you’re actually taking at work. You might be shocked to find that even though you are exhausted when 5 p.m. rolls around, you only took a thousand steps!
To increase your step count during the day, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk around the printer while you’re waiting for that 90-page document to print. Set a reminder to get up and walk to the break room (for water!) every hour. You’ll be surprised at how many more steps you’re getting in every day when you’re making a conscious effort.

Shop online. Yes, really.

Okay, so this last tip comes from yours truly. You’re welcome.
A study conducted by Brent Coker at the University of Melbourne found that workplace internet leisure browsing (WILB)—like shopping the latest Amazon deals or scrolling social media—can actually increase your productivity at work.
Bless you, Dr. Coker.
So, if you’ve been plugging away at a project for several hours, it’s okay to take a break and scroll through that cute guy from the gym’s Instagram. Just make sure you don’t accidentally deep like one of his pics!

Dressing For Love: 7 Date Night Outfits For Every Occasion

Maybe it’s not quite love at first sight, but you both swiped right and decided to meet up Friday night. You’re going out to that swanky Italian place that just opened up downtown—it’s bound to be an interesting experience and could lead to something more. You’re buzzing with excitement over the possibilities.
But you take a look a look at your closet and dread sets in: What are you supposed to wear to impress your date?
You probably want something flattering (that doesn’t look like you tried too hard). You’re looking for something that’s sexy yet comfortable and that won’t reveal when you’ve had a few ravioli too many. You hope to find the perfect balance between trendy and classic. And of course, the date night outfit has to come in that perfect shade to complement your baby blues. But where do you begin putting together a look?
HealthyWay’s got you covered. We’ve put together a guide to help you find the perfect date night outfits for every occasion, whether you’ll be slurping spaghetti, bouncing around the best cocktail bars in the city, or doing something a little more adventurous. (Trust us: You can find love at the indoor rock climbing gym.)
Here’s what to wear on your next date.

Date Night Outfits for When You’re Dressing for Love

Dressing for love is an art, rather than a science. There are no hard and fast rules for choosing a date night outfit that will make your sweetheart swoon. More than anything, you want to create a look that’s true to who you are.
If the date night outfit makes you feel amazing about yourself, you’re golden. Confidence is the most beautiful quality in a partner. Do you love mixing and matching prints? Throw on your splashiest skirt and strut with pride. Maybe you’re more of a minimalist who feels gorgeous in classic cuts. Go for a monochrome look that accentuates your silhouette.
Beyond dressing authentically, however, there are other factors to consider. What’s the weather forecast? What’s the planned activity? What’s the vibe of the venue? You want to find a date outfit that will keep you comfortable, whether you’re hiking on a chilly spring day or standing for a few hours as your favorite band jams on stage. It’s always a good idea to grab a sweater (doesn’t every restaurant have a draft?), wear shoes that don’t pinch (at least not too much!), and make sure your accessories don’t get in the way.
One last tip: Always try sitting down in your date night outfit before you go out. It could shift in ways you wouldn’t expect, and you may want to make a quick swap to something that hits you in all the right places, whether you wind up sitting or standing.

First Date at a Casual Pizza Joint

Nothing takes the edge off a first date quite like agreeing to go somewhere friendly and chill. But what’s the right date night outfit for a casual dinner? Try that classic early 2000s favorite: jeans and a nice top.
Madewell’s curvy high-rise skinny jeans in black sea hug the body in all the right places. They come in dozens of sizes, including inseams specifically for short, tall, and “taller” women. The raw hems and hand-ripped knees will show that you’re on point with 2018 fashion trends.
A sheer top elevates the overall look into a flirty ensemble. BB Dakota’s lacy short-sleeve crew neck top or Free People’s v-neck muscle tank would look sharp with high-waisted skinnies—and offer enough wiggle room for you to nervously scarf down too much pepperoni if it comes to that.
Date night outfits don’t always require heels. Keep it casual with a pair of cute flats, like sustainable footwear brand Rothy’s black flats with a pointed toe, which are made from recycled bottles, or Sam Edelman’s on-trend woven mule.
The lace top should be the most eye-catching element of your casual date night outfit. Simplify your accessories with some gold bangles, like these recycled brass stacking cuffs from SOKO, handmade by Kenyan artisans. Stash your keys, phone, wallet, and lipstick in a chic black bag, like this eco-friendly clutch from Matt & Nat.

Luxe Date With Your Long-Term Partner

We tend to settle in and get cozy when we’re in a long-term relationship. But your partner wants to splurge on a five-course meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and you’ve got to dress the part. What’s the best date night outfit to wear when you want to dazzle your partner (who has already seen you in everything)?
This is the perfect time to try something bold and eye catching, like a jumpsuit. Yumi Kim’s known for its rompers and jumpsuits. The brand’s silk floral romper radiates the right amount of romance for a summer date night outfit. A long-sleeve midi dress in a pretty floral print is a smart alternative to wear when the weather’s cooler, and the draped wrap style will hang nicely on a variety of body shapes. If prints aren’t your thing, check out this solid black jumpsuit from Amour Vert. The sustainably made garment features hypoallergenic silk that can be worn year round and is colored with only nontoxic dyes.
Choosing the right shoe is critical when wearing a jumpsuit. A heel gives you a lift that will turn heads. Sam Edelman’s ankle strap block-heel pump in nude creates lean lines and elongates your legs. Or we love these block heel sandals from ABLE, which employs women living in poverty around the world. The store only offers cruelty-free items, so you’ll feel good knowing no animals were harmed in the making of your heels.
Tie your hair back in a low bun or flirty braid and wear an understated yet elegant necklace like the Cascade Lariat from ABLE to show off your neckline. Stash all your essentials in a statement-making crossbody bag, such as this mini chain saddle bag or a sleek modern clutch from Urban Originals. The overall date night outfit will look both sexy and sophisticated—perfect for wowing your long-term sweetheart.

Rock Concert With Someone You’re Getting to Know

It’s been a few months and you’re really enjoying spending time with this person. You noticed their favorite band is playing a live show in a couple weeks and you scored tickets! This occasion calls for a date night outfit with an edgy rocker vibe that will make you the star of the show.
Let’s work from the top down. A muscle tank with graphic vintage elements is a nice throwback to the rocker look from the 1970s, especially if you knot the bottom. This sequin tank from Express has elongated arm holes that will play peekaboo with colorful a lacy bralette (this one from Amazon comes in a ton of colors). Alternatively, create a rocker chic look with this distressed tank from Alternative Apparel and this classic collar necklace from Nisolo. For a more eclectic vibe, add a layered-look necklace and a stack of rings to finish off your look.
Keep the ’70s vibes flowing with high-waisted wide leg jeans from sustainable fashion giant Reformation, which cleans a thousand gallons of water for every pair sold. Lucky Brand offers a pair of tomboy-style jeans with a similar cool factor. If your concert date is outside during warmer months you might opt for a cool pair of cut-offs like this one from AGOLDE.
A date night outfit for a rock concert demands a shoe that’s both stylish and comfortable (you’ll be standing for a few hours). ASOS has the perfect pair of studded sandals with a chunky block heel for comfort and stability. But if any sort of heel will stifle your dancing, choose a metallic sneaker instead for a date night look that’s both fun and funky. These shiny sneakers from Veja are perfect for grooving all night, and they’re made from eco-friendly materials.
You’ll want to keep your hands free to hold a drink and shoot pics of the band, so try to take advantage of your pockets to hold your lipstick, phone, and wallet. If you have to carry a bag with this date night outfit, choose a small shoulder bag that features fun details. Urban Originals vegan leather embossed shoulder bag should do the trick.

Indoor Rock Climbing on a Third Date

Active dates are one of the best ways to get to know your new beau a little better. If you’re heading to the indoor rock climbing gym, you’ll need to find a date outfit that allows for ample range of motion but won’t hide your figure or compromise your style.
Sustainable activewear brand ADAY’s leggings are stretchy, sweat-wicking, and supportive. These leggings will move with your body as you climb to the top of the rock wall, and they have a handy pocket for your phone and keys. Outdoor Voice’s Slashback Crop Top will keep you dry and supported even as you work up a sweat. Throw on a cool bomber jacket, slip into some fun slides or sneakers, grab a cute gym-friendly bag, and you’ll be ready to go.
For makeup, you’ll want to keep it more natural, but tarte offers a great gym essentials kit for a natural but active-date-ready look.
Socks are usually an afterthought for date night outfits, but you’ll need to pick a nice thin pair to slide on with your rock climbing shoes. Bombas offers a four-pack of no show socks in neutral colors with the classic bumblebee logo, and they’re a great conversation starter while you’re gearing up to climb: For every pair sold, the brand gives a pair of socks (one of the most requested items at homeless shelters) to someone in need. If you thought your heart could only be worn on your sleeve, think again!

Going on a Hike With Your Crush

A friend that you’ve been crushing on for a while has invited you to take a hike. You’re both friendly and familiar, but you’re trying to take things to the next level. What should you wear?
Layers are your best friend here: You’ll want to bundle up to fight off the chill of the morning with the ability to strip off heavier garments as you warm up on the hike. Think leggings, tank top, sweatshirt, and maybe a hat and scarf, depending on the weather.
Outdoor Voice’s Hi-Rise 7/8 Legging are a great pick for a hiking date legging. The sweat-wicking fabric, four-way stretch, and universally flattering fit that sculpts, lifts, and tones make them perfect for exploring the great outdoors. On top, start with this strappy two-in-one tank from lululemon, then layer on something that offers some protection, like Athleta’s sustainably-made Vitamin Sea Jacket. This jacket offers UPF 50+ coverage and is made from post-consumer plastic bottles, meaning it’s not only doing good for you—it’s helping the environment as well.
Finally, if the weather necessitates additional layers, add a vest for a date outfit that’s fit for the forest. This lightweight water-resistant packable down vest is a great choice that can be rolled up, packed neatly into the included carrying bag, and stored in your backpack if you get too warm. Toss your hair into a ponytail, throw on your favorite baseball cap, and get ready to hit the trail (hopefully hand-in-hand with your hiking buddy!).

Date Night Outfits for Formal Events

Every once in awhile, you’ll get an invite to go somewhere truly extravagant, like a charity gala, the opera, or the ballet. You’ll need a date night outfit that will turn heads as soon as you walk in the door.
You can’t go wrong with a little black dress, but try to find one that has some attitude and isn’t too short. This body-con midi dress from Nordstrom has a faux wrap look with ruching at the sides that accentuates the body-con fit and is flattering for your waistline. With this look, you can really dress it up with glam statement jewelry like these Miguel Ases handmade earrings, which are very lightweight and comfortable. Polish off this sleek look with a dramatic smokey eye using Kat Von D’s Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette.
For a head-turning color in a silhouette that will wow, go for Reformation’s Callalily dress. With a deep v-neck, an open back, and a high slit, you’ll be turning heads in this date night outfit.
If you’re looking for a truly stunning date night outfit for a formal event, Monsoon’s embellished maxi dress exudes old-school Hollywood glamour. The intricate beadwork is handmade not only to give each dress a unique look, but also to help sustain traditional craftsmanship techniques in Asia.
Carry everything you need in an acrylic clutch that brings an element of surprise to an otherwise classic look. This Cult Gaia clutch has a mod appeal. If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, Gigi New York offers a variety of clutches that can be used both for day and evening, like this Stella Fold-Over Clutch which has a conveniently detachable crossbody strap.
Sexy stilettos are a must for fancy date night outfits. Check Beyond Skin for high-end, cruelty-free footwear designs, like these t-strap stiletto heels. Or try Sam Edelman’s Ariella Ankle Strap Sandal for a moderately priced, versatile go-to.

Date Night Outfits for When You Just Want to Netflix and Chill

Date night doesn’t always mean going out: Sometimes snuggling up with your SO on the couch in front of a few flicks can be more romantic than anything else. A chill night is no excuse to look frumpy, though.
Date night outfits for movies at home should create an alluring look that allows you to sprawl out and snuggle up comfortably. The silk sleep set from Everlane is a casual date night outfit with a cute cut your guy will love. Conversely, you could slip on these cropped joggers from Anthropologie and a super soft but stylish sweatshirt from Athleta.
And when it comes to Netflix and chill, what you wear underneath matters just as much as what’s on top. Choose a matching bra and panty set that makes you feel like a goddess. The Secret Life of Hummingbirds lingerie collection from Naja gives you a variety of flattering styles, all of which are made by single mothers or women heads of households. If supporting other women isn’t sexy, we’re not sure what is.

Healthy Her Way: Remy Park Of Veggiekins

As a lover of all things plant related, I can’t help but crush on this week’s Healthy Her Way feature, Remy Park, as she takes the term plant lady to a whole new level. In addition to being a talented food photographer and recipe developer, Remy is also a wellness coach (and yoga instructor in training).
On her Instagram, which is filled with incredible photos of houseplants that often leave me green with envy, Remy also shares her plant-powered vegan and gluten-free recipes complemented by colorful food photography.
Although Remy’s thoughtfully curated blog, Veggiekins, initially started as a personal food accountability journal intended for select eyes only, it has since grown into a stunning website that seamlessly shatters stigmas about vegan eating. For Remy, becoming a vegan wasn’t a temporary fix or fad diet—it’s a way of life. It’s truly impressive to see how Remy has turned her plant passion into an inspiring career, especially considering she’s still in her early twenties.
If you’ve ever pondered over the question What the heck can vegans eat?, prepare to be amazed by Remy’s flavorful creations and personal insights regarding how her plant friends help her entire being.
Living a vegan lifestyle isn’t for the faint of heart, and Remy is candid about the fact that she initially struggled with feeling hypocritical discussing vegan eating while owning clothes, beauty products, and household items that contained toxic ingredients and weren’t vegan-friendly. As a result of this realization, she has since become committed to finding non-toxic items for her home and body while sharing her knowledge and favorite finds with fellow (and aspiring) plant enthusiasts along the way.
Remy’s dedication is admirable, and we’re blown away by her knowledge on the topics of clean beauty, vegan and ethical fashion, and green living.
For those of you who love recipe videos as much as we do, Remy also has a YouTube channel that she uses to share creative recipe videos and more personal vlog content, such as Q+A sessions that allow her followers to learn more about the brilliant mind behind Veggiekins.
The vlog that really broke the mold for us was when Remy opened up about her struggles with anorexia and OCD. Remy is extremely genuine and raw, stating, “If this helps one person then it’s worth it.” We can’t help but feel inspired by Remy’s compassion and desire to help others live their best life.
Keep spreading love and light, Remy! “Magic goes where intention flows.”

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

On my best day I wake up around 5 a.m., start my morning with a liter of warm lemon water, take my vitamins, and do a quick stretch if I’m pressed for time or ideally a quick 20 to 30 minute yoga flow just to get the blood pumping. I am more of a morning workout person, so I’ll either head to the gym or take a workout class. My favorite ones lately are Sculpt at Corepower Yoga, classic SoulCycle, or an interval class.
I’ll then eat breakfast, typically a smoothie or something sweet because I have the worst sweet tooth ever! I respond to emails in the morning, then move on to recipe development and food photography. I love morning light and using natural light so I typically try to wrap up by about 12 to 1 p.m. I usually have a matcha latte in the afternoon as a pick-me-up and typically a gigantic, colorful salad for lunch.
In the afternoon, I usually focus more on editing content, for example blog posts, photo editing, video editing, and client work. If I have errands or events to attend that day, I’ll typically be out and about wearing athleisure—most days! In the early evening, if I can, I like to have my dinner pre-prepped. I typically don’t take photos of my dinner past the afternoon because of light, so what I’ll usually do is make it in advance and toss it in to the fridge or freezer to reheat for dinner.
I try to spend at least 10 to 15 minutes outside and disconnected so an after-dinner walk is my favorite way to wind down. I light candles, get the diffuser going and then I wrap up emails once more and call it a night! Although I’m an early riser, I’m in bed between 11 and 1 a.m. most days.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

My favorite way is to disconnect. Because social media and technology are so integrated into what I do, it can be deceiving sometimes and it may feel like I’m not working when in reality, I still am! It also allows me to check in with my feelings, energy levels, and just recenter myself. I also try to prioritize movement each day and time outside. Even on my busiest days, I’ll try to fit in a workout or at the very least a walk outside to make sure I get movement and sunshine in.

How do you stay inspired?

I actually stay inspired by disconnecting. I find myself stuck in a rut if I’m scrolling through social media for inspiration. I end up drawn to whatever it is everyone else is doing so instead I spend time disconnected, out in nature, and I try to stay inspired by colors, seasons, and nature.

Loving Lately…

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

I’ve recently been hooked on cashew butter, though I was previously a die-hard almond butter fan. I’ve also discovered a new brand of almond butter from Better Almond Butter which is raw, unpasteurized marcona almond butter (heaven!).
I’ve also been really loving Snow Monkey ice cream, which is a superfood infused, gluten free, and vegan high-protein ice cream developed by athletes. It’s the cleanest vegan ice cream I’ve found on the market that still tastes delicious.
I’ve also been loving Food Huggers, which are food savers that eliminate the need to use plastic food storage bags and saran wrap. They keep my avocado halves fresh, and same goes for my lemon and lime halves! In the beauty and skin department, I’ve been really loving the Moon Fruit night cream by Herbivore Botanicals—a vegan and natural brand—as well as the Vitamin C probiotic face polish by Osea. My go-to body product is still the Mount Airy body serum by Franklin and Whitman. I’ve also rediscovered my love for my inspiralizer!

What are your favorite apps?

Some of my favorite apps are SnapSeed for quick phone photo editing, the MyFlO app—this one is a recent love and gamechanger: It provides recommendations for everything from the kinds of workouts you should do to the kinds of foods you should eat to support the current phase you are in of your menstrual cycle and has a really comprehensive symptom tracking system.
Todoist is my all-time favorite app because it syncs to my laptop and is how I organize and stay on top of tasks. I also love Sleep++, and not going to lie, but my sweetgreen app gets a good workout. I also love using the HappyCow app to find vegan food spots around me when I travel. Lastly, I am recently transitioning over to using AirTable for spreadsheets, lists, etc. because it’s so versatile.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

I love @floretflower for general flower inspo and @loriastern for floral food inspo—big into florals in my food!—@glowmaven for wellness, @elllenfisher for incredible tropical living inspiration and the sweetest family shares—it feels like watching a TV show because I’m so invested in her sweet family!—@cbquality for general badassery and boss lady inspiration, @stayandwander for travel inspiration, @spiritdaughter for astrology, @malloryonthemoon for vibrant lifestyle inspo, and @matthewkenneycuisine for gorgeous plating and vibrant plants!

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

My go-to sweet snack would have to be green apple slices and almond butter or a baked good with beans in it, like chickpea cookie dough or black bean brownies! If I’m feeling savory, I love having raw veggies with hummus or a super quick avocado toast on gluten-free bread!

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Watching: One of the only shows I’ve kept up to date with is Grey’s Anatomy. I also love Broad City and need to catch up on Black Mirror Season 4. I recently watched the movie Wonder, which was one of my favorite movies this year, though it is a children’s movie.

What is your bucket list travel destination?

I’ve been really wanting to visit Egypt for the longest time. I think it’s a really beautiful destination and have heard great things from friends about not only the sights but also the culture and the history!

What superpower would you like to have?

I wish I could be in two places at once! I have a hard time saying no sometimes, and I have a particularly hard time overbooking myself, so if I could be in two places at once, most of my problems would be nonexistent. Also, I could be eating Pressed Juicery freeze while working out simultaneously. Seems like a good combination to me!

What’s your coffee order?

I typically don’t drink coffee, but my go-to drink at a cafe is usually a matcha latte unsweetened and made with either almond or cashew milk. If I make it at home, I’ll add a little vanilla bean and usually maca or another adaptogen.

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

“Let your past make you better, not bitter.” I have always loved this quote and try to live by it.

6 Femtech Apps That Are Changing How Women Handle Their Health

Being empowered to make choices about your health is the ultimate glow-up for 2018. The latest way to stay up to date (and keep yourself in optimal health) involves a whole lot of data—from when to expect your next period to how sleep and exercise are affecting your mood.
Enter femtech apps.
Search the App Store for any number of women’s health needs like period tracking, pregnancy, sexual health, or birth control, and you’re likely to be scrolling for a while. These apps are a huge part of women’s healthcare in 2018. Danish entrepreneur Ida Tin calls this niche technology femtech, and it generates billions of investment dollars a year.
Tin is the co-founder and CEO of period-tracking app Clue and claims femtech’s popularity is due to the number of women who want more personalized choices. Femtech allows technology—which we’re already using in daily life—to address the complexities of women’s bodies and shed light on topics once considered taboo, like menstruation and sexual health.
“Reproductive health is an incredibly foundational and central part of our lives, but there’s a real lack of clarity for women,” Tin told Code Red Co. last year. “These misconceptions and stigmas exist because of a lack of research into, and understanding of, menstruation.”
With everything from weekly updates during pregnancy to trusted sexual health info at your fingertips, femtech apps have a lot to offer. Here are six apps that will give you a better understanding of your health, help you connect with other women, and keep you safe along the way.
[sol title=”Clue” subheader=”Period Tracking”]
Clue is one of many apps helping users track their menstrual cycles. However, it is set apart by being the highest ranking free period-tracking app according to the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a publication of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). The study scored more than 1,000 apps based on accuracy, features, and functionality and Clue earned the highest score of those evaluated.
With Clue you can track your period and fertile windows and document moods, pain symptoms, exercise, medication, and sexual activity to gain a better understanding of your own personal patterns.
Available for iOS and Android.
[sol title=”Maven” subheader=”Making Healthcare More Accessible”]
Lack of access to healthcare services is one of the biggest women’s issues we face. From the inability to attend regular medical appointments to financial barriers to affording standard care, women are struggling to keep themselves healthy. Enter Maven, an app that connects users with medical and mental health professionals via video call or private message.
You can book an appointment with a doctor, nurse practitioner, midwife, nutritionist, lactation consultant, or licensed counselor directly through the app. The appointment costs vary, from $18 for a 10-minute appointment with a nurse practitioner or midwife to $70 for a 40-minute appointment with a mental health professional. They’ll also write you prescriptions, so you’ll never have to go without birth control, no matter your state legislature’s feelings on it. Unfortunately, most insurance companies won’t accept claims from Maven, so you’ll likely have to pay out of pocket. Still, increasing the potential for access is something we’re definitely happy to get behind.
Currently only available for iOS, but appointments can also be booked online for those without an Apple device.
[sol title=”Eve by Glow” subheader=”Pregnancy Prevention”]
Glow, an enterprise that creates “personal health tracking products [to] illuminate health through data,” offers several femtech apps including Glow, an ovulation and fertility tracker focused on supporting women who are trying to conceive. Glow also offers Nurture for pregnancy tracking and Glow Baby for baby’s first year.
Eve by Glow offers similar features as other period trackers but is geared more toward women trying to avoid pregnancy. Eve allows you to track your cycle and sexual activity while also connecting you with trusted information on health and sex brought to you by Bedsider, a birth control support network operated by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
Available for iOS and Android.
[sol title=”The Bump Pregnancy Countdown” subheader=”Planner, Prenatal Health Tips, and Product Reviews”]
From the people who brought you the wedding planning website The Knot comes a one-stop-shop for expectant moms.
The Bump Pregnancy Countdown app features a planner with information and even suggested questions for prenatal doctor’s visits, a catalog of baby products and reviews, and a question tool that allows users to get quick answers from other moms as well as medical experts. HealthyWay’s audience development strategist and resident momma-to-be, Ashley, says she likes that “it tells you both what is going on with your baby and also what you can expect week-by-week to happen to your body during pregnancy.”
Available for iOS and Android.
[sol title=”Hey! Vina” subheader=”Community Building”]
Hey! Vina is like Tinder, but for female companionship. It uses the same “swipe right” idea to help you find new friends and join communities of like-minded women. The app, which is available only to self-identified women, suggests friendship matches based on mutual Facebook acquaintances, proximity, and results from various personality quizzes.
We all know how difficult it can be to find and maintain adult friendships, and Hey! Vina makes that process a little easier.
Available for iOS and Android.
[sol title=”SafeTrek” subheader=”That Secure Feeling, Just a Button Away”]
SafeTrek was founded in HealthyWay’s hometown: St. Louis, Missouri, and while we love giving a shoutout to local businesses, that’s not the only reason we’re recommending this personal safety app.
Though it wasn’t necessarily designed specifically for women, nearly all of this app’s 250,000 users are women. What sets SafeTrek apart from other safety apps is that you don’t have to bring the phone to your ear or even remove it from your purse or pocket to operate it. When you’re in a situation where you could feel vulnerable—walking alone to your car at night, for instance—this app may offer you some peace of mind. All you have to do is press the app’s center button while en route. Once you reach a safe place, release the button and enter a PIN. If the button is released and no PIN is entered, the app will immediately contact police and send them to your location.
Do we love that the burden of women’s safety nearly always falls on women? Nope. But there’s no doubt we feel a little safer knowing this app has our backs.
Available for iOS and Android.
