24 Underrated Parenting Products That Actually Work

Parenting can be really tough sometimes. The pacing, the lack of sleep, and the seemingly endless loads of laundry that pile up. Add to that the stress of the cost of raising a kid in the 21st century.
According to a report of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average middle-income family will spend more than $12,500 per year on child-related expenses. Many of these expenses come from buying products that are supposed to make parenting easier—or your baby happier. Sometimes they’re great…other times they’re not. It’s so frustrating as a parent to spend money on something (and get excited about what it offers) that doesn’t live up to its claim.
Let us help you save time and money! If you’re in the middle of “baby central,” or if you’re preparing for it, here is a list of must-have products (according to other parents) that will put your hard-earned money to good use, because they really work!

Top 50 Reviewer on Amazon said: “Hands down this is one of the best inventions for babies ever. A friend had one on her baby registry years ago and I thought it sounded disgusting. I bought it (a Nosefrida) and she showed me how it worked. In no way does the snot get anywhere near your mouth, ever. It works so much better than those awful bulb things you can buy from the stores or what the hospital sends you home with.” –Caley G

15 Baby And Kids' Products You Can Live Without…And What To Buy Instead

When it comes to buying products for your little one, decision fatigue is real. You’ve probably scoured way too many baby item Pinterest boards to count. Truth is, there are an overwhelming amount of options and some pretty compelling reasons to want to buy all the things, causing you to quickly overspend.
Rather than waste your much-needed resources on products you don’t actually need, there are items worth every penny, and we’re here to break them down for you. Below are 15 baby and kids products you can definitely live without—and what to shop for instead!

Baby Products

1. Don’t do: Baby wipe warmer.

This is first on our list because it’s one of the most tempting purchases to pick up before your little bundle of joy arrives. It seems logical that your baby’s tiny bottom would need warm wipes, right? Wrong. From my experience, my little one couldn’t tell the difference between a room temperature wipe from a “warmed up” one. And believe you me, in those early days of parenting, you’ll be using those wipes so often that you’ll practically rip them out of the package.

Do try: These delightfully absorbent burp cloths.

Your baby is going to spit all up on you (and then some), and for this reason, you must be prepared. While wipes generally come in handy for any number of things, you’ll want to protect your clothes from getting wet in the first place. That’s why ARNIZION’s Curved Burp Cloths are so great.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You just sling one of their 100 percent cotton cloths over your shoulder, and not only will it protect you from your little angel’s drips and drools, but it also won’t slip off easily. Trust me, you’ll be using these round the clock.

2. Don’t do: Bottle warmers.

Likewise with wipe warmers: Just don’t. Many of us parents are easily duped into these items before our kids arrive because let’s face it: We have no idea what we’re getting into. It’s like when you’re going on vacation and you buy (and then pack) a bunch of needless stuff you end up regretting. Luckily, those of us on the other side can let other parents know ahead of time.
Instead of paying money for this contraption, run your baby’s bottle under a hot faucet or warm it in a cup of hot water—BOOM. Remember, each formula’s instructions will be different, but a good rule of thumb is that it should be body temperature, meaning, it should feel warm or cool, but never hot.

Do try: Baby bottles worth investing in.

Rather than spend money on unnecessary items, spend a little more on the quality of your baby bottles (I promise, it’s worth it).

HealthyWay
Amazon

Philips Avent Anti-Colic Baby Bottles are beloved far and wide for their design and durability. And as their name implies, they are clinically proven to reduce your baby’s colic, meaning less gas and fussiness (aka a more rested you).

3. Don’t do: Baby perfume.

One of the things I love the most about my munchkin is that he always smells like peanut butter. No matter what he eats. It’s the weirdest, most lovable scent in the world to me, and I promise your little one will be equally delicious to inhale. In fact, research has shown that women, mothers or not, tend to enjoy a baby’s scent. Which brings me to my point: You do not need to cover them up with pricey, superficial fragrance.

Do try: These baby grooming essentials.

Keep your small human healthy and groomed with this handy 17-piece kit by The First Years. My two-year-old still uses the majority of these essentials.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The pack of neat items includes a nasal aspirator for cleaning out a runny nose, a digital thermometer, a medicine spoon with a cap, a nail clipper, a tiny brush and comb, and even a small rattle to keep your baby entertained and distracted. All of this comes in a practical bag to take with you on outings and trips.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/First-Years-American-Healthcare-Grooming/dp/B000LZFZVS”]Baby Healthcare And Grooming Kit, $17.13 from Amazon[/link-button]

4. Don’t do: Changing tables.

Confession time: I purchased the loveliest of changing tables before my little one got here. How did this happen? Because all of those Pinterest boards with the cute nursery rooms had them, and it seemed logical that you’d need a special place to change your child’s diapers. But here’s the thing, when it comes to parenting, you want to look at the long game (I can say this now in hindsight); in other words, find furniture that your child won’t outgrow.

Do try: A dresser that will go the distance.

Here’s what I wish I had bought two years ago: The Delta Children Universal 6 Drawer Dresser; you just set up a changing kit and pad on top, and you’re good to go.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Once your baby starts potty training, you simply take it off and have a completely functional furniture item to last you for years. Hurrah!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Children-Universal-Drawer-Dresser/dp/B01DPH3YT8″]Delta Children Universal 6 Drawer Dresser, $249.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

5. Don’t do: Baby pillow.

As we’re certain you’ve heard before, anything other than a fitted sheet in your baby’s crib is a big no-no. Tempting as it may be, your baby will be perfectly fine to sleep without one, and you’ll stave off any potential choking hazards.

Do try: A magical sound machine to get your baby to sleep.

You know what becomes your top priority? Getting your small angel to sleep through the night. As every parent since the beginning of time can tell you, this is no easy feat. Luckily, the Baby Sleep Soother Sound Machine is basically magic.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The shushing heartbeat sound, white noise, and soft, pulsing light will lull your baby into dreamland. You can set a 10-, 20-, or 30-minute shut-off timer, too, so you can head to bed.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Portable-Sleep-Soother-Machine/dp/B01M8PJO3W”]Portable Baby Sleep Soother Sound Machine, $17.75 from Amazon[/link-button]

6. Don’t do: Diaper pails.

Diaper pails are easily one of the most overhyped items on this list. Sure, this seems like an incredibly important purchase, but really, all you need is any closed trash bin. Trust me, you’re not going to want to fill a diaper pail to the brim with stinky, soiled diapers. You’re going to immediately take out the trash after a poopy session (of which there will be plenty), so why invest in a fancy bin?

Do try: Keep your baby nearby with this rocking bassinet.

Whether you’re unsure if you’ll co-sleep or have your little angel sleep in a crib, one thing is for sure: You’ll have round the clock feedings. And for this reason, a bassinet can feel like a life-saver.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This portable bassinet by MiClassic makes sleep time a lot more manageable with its brilliant rocking mode. It also gives you the option of folding into a carry on bag for traveling.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Rocking-Bassinet-One-Second-Portable-Newborn/dp/B06ZZP4TCP”]MiClassic Rocking Bassinet, $74.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

7. Don’t do: Designer diaper bag.

As tempting as a designer bag may seem, resist the urge to spend hundreds of dollars on something meant to get dirty (diaper cream and sippy cup spillage come to mind). More importantly, you’re going to need that extra money for the loads upon loads of diapers you will actually need.

Do try: This fashionably frugal tote.

Being practical doesn’t mean you have to give up style! The striped tote from Primebabe is fashionable, and it’s also large enough to fit all of your baby’s essentials.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It also comes with an assortment of neat (and useful) accessories: a changing pad for all your outings, a bottle bag, adjustable shoulder strap, and a cute mini purse.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Capacity-Primebabe-Stroller-Organizer-Changing/dp/B01N0XP3MB”]Primebabe 5 in 1 Baby Diaper Bag, $24.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

8. Scented detergent.

While most people will simply tell you don’t do the thing, let me share my experience: I, too, bought into the hype of spending money on scented laundry detergent before my son was born, and wouldn’t-ya-know-it—he has sensitive skin. Meaning it was all for waste. Babies come straight from the womb with delicate, pristine skin—no need to push harsh soaps on them. WebMD recommends sticking to fragrance-free laundry detergents whenever possible and to keep in mind that liquid rinses out better than flakes.

Do try: A free and clear detergent that won’t harm your little one.

Since you have no way of knowing how your baby will react, keep things on the safe side with Seventh Generation’s Concentrated Laundry Detergent, an unscented and hypoallergenic alternative.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You’ll never spend as much time washing clothes as when you have a small human in your home (unless there are several!), which is all the more reason to opt for a detergent that is both tough on stains and gentle for your skin.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Seventh-Generation-Concentrated-Detergent-Unscented/dp/B0091DS0UY”]Seventh Generation’s Concentrated Laundry Detergent, $25.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

9. Don’t do: Baby shoes galore.

Teeny tiny baby shoes are the cutest. I really, truly understand the desire to buy them in the dozens. But here’s a fact: They have no actual purpose other than looking all kinds of adorable. Baby shoes for a non-walking baby is basically throwing money into a big ole’ pit with little return. Since we know the temptation is strong, we recommend limiting yourself to buying only one pair for all your photo-taking needs.

Do try: These stylish bibs that keep your baby drool-free.

There are few things I know for certain, but one of them is this: You can never have too many bibs in your parenting arsenal.

HealthyWay
Amazon

As we’ve established before, babies love to spit up all over us and themselves (and just wait until they’re teething!). These super absorbent drool bibs will keep your little one nice and dry.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Parker-Baby-Bandana-Drool-Bibs/dp/B074NXP1GR”]Parker’s Baby Bandana Drool Bibs, $21.80 from Amazon[/link-button]

10. Don’t do: Expensive bedding.

They add a layer of cuteness to your nursery room, you might say. But in reality, all of those frilly bumpers and pillows are problematic as they put your baby at risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, as soft and loose bedding can increase the potential risk of suffocation. Like we said before, you only really need a soft fitted crib sheet to cover the mattress pad, which is your safest option for bedtime.

Do try: These baby-hugging wearable blankets.

If you’re worried about your munchkin staying warm, there’s a perfect alternative to potentially hazardous bedding.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This wearable blanket from Bon Bebe Baby is pure cotton and keeps your little one nice and cozy without the added risk. This is one of our favorite items on this list, and one you’ll most likely use all day.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bon-Bebe-Friends-Assorted-Wearable/dp/B01D1RTA1S”]Bon Bebe Baby’s Wearable Blanket, $14.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

Kids’ Products

11. Don’t do: Musical potty.

At some point in your potty training trajectory, you will have the impulse to buy a potty with flashing lights and loud sounds. It’ll make poopy time so fun, you’ll say. Well, I am here to help you resist that urge.
Just no. Kids don’t need all those bells and whistles to do their business (promise!). It’s nothing an average-priced potty seat and good old-fashioned patience can’t handle.

Do try: A book to guide you on the potty training path.

A good friend of mine says that life is all about strategy. That’s why parents need The Complete Guide to Potty Training by Michelle D. Swaney.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Sure, while your child’s milestone (sans diaper) seems pretty straightforward, it can also get exasperating. Needless to say, difficulties will arise, and it’s times like these where you’ll want the step-by-step guidance of experts.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Potty-Training-Step/dp/1641520116″]The Complete Guide to Potty Training, $11.12 from Amazon[/link-button]

12. Don’t do: Toys that sing or light up.

Another tempting buy, and one totally not worth your money. While initially entertaining, the batteries wear off fast or the toy will stop working altogether. I can personally vouch for the tedium of having your child go into full tantrum mode because their once favorite teddy no longer lights up. Yeah…best to avoid this pitfall altogether.

Do try: Fostering their musical talents.

Encourage your child’s creativity by letting them come up with their own rhythms instead. Science has shown that a child’s brain is enhanced by learning to play a musical instrument. According to Melissa Locker at Time, This helps them develop ‘neurophysiological distinction’ between certain sounds that can aid in literacy, which can translate into improved academic results for kids.”

HealthyWay
Amazon

This set of kids’ musical instruments not only lasts longer than a singing toy, but it also allows a child to create their own melodies. The complete set comes with various instruments for a wider range of sounds and is safe to use for younger kids as well.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Innocheer-Kids-Musical-Instruments-Tambourine/dp/B01L6ZMVYU”]Innocheer Kids Musical Instruments, $27.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

13. Don’t do: Brand-name apparel.

There’s honestly nothing more frustrating than spending a large chunk of a paycheck on a jazzy outfit your child will outgrow in a matter of months. Avoid overpaying for brand-name clothes and opt instead for buying from big box retailers and thrift stores, which offer similar value for a LOT less.

Do try: A durable backpack that lasts all year.

Aside from making sure your child’s sporting a backpack that’s stylish and functional, you’ll want to go for one that’s going to be easy on their back. Remember that a heavy bag can cause nerve damage to your kiddo’s arms and shoulders, so investing in a high-quality book bag should be a priority.

HealthyWay
Amazon

We recommend MIFULGOO’s Kids Waterproof Backpack for its smart design, roomy compartments, and added reflector (which combines safety with style).
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Backpack-Elementary-Middle-Reflector/dp/B01GS63Q3M”]MIFULGOO Kids Waterproof Backpack, $24.52 from Amazon[/link-button]

14. Don’t do: Fancy laptops.

You might easily be tempted to overspend thousands of dollars on the latest high-tech laptop computer, but keep in mind: Does your kid really need it? With the ever-changing tech landscape, it makes no sense to spend an exorbitant amount of funds on a laptop that will quickly become outdated.

Do try: Getting a cost-effective alternative.

If your child would mainly use a pricey MacBook Air for surfing the web and watching Netflix, you’re better off opting for a Google-powered Acer Chromebook, which offers the same value for a fraction of the cost.

HealthyWay

15. Don’t do: Extravagant birthdays.

Alright, alright—this one’s not exactly a “product,” but it does involve a lot of wasted money. Sure, we want our kids to have the most magical of days, but as Samantha Kemp-Jackson of HuffPost questioned, are expensive kiddie birthday parties more over-indulgent than they are necessary?
Some researchers have found that spoiling children at a young age can pose long-term effects such as poor social skills, irresponsibility, and lack of independence. Kemp-Jackson noted that this might be “to make up for our feelings of parental inadequacy and engagement by spending lots of money.”

Do try: Taking them on an adventure.

Your kids will only be little for so long, so don’t spend a fortune on birthday supplies that you’ll only use once when you can opt for more memorable experiences. Pack their bag (we recommend MiniMAX’s Children’s Trolley Luggage) and take them camping to watch falling stars.

38 Screen-Free Amazon Products For Dinner Out With Kids

The first time we took our oldest out to eat she was 6 months old.
It was awful.
She cried a lot during the meal, which meant my husband and I took turns taking her out for a walk around the parking lot of the restaurant so we could finish our food before taking her home and putting her to bed. It’s been six years since that dinner out, and we honestly haven’t done a lot of restaurant dining as a family since.

I think we were slightly traumatized by that experience. It felt a lot easier to order takeout, go to Chick-fil-A, or simply cook at home. When my husband and I decided we really needed a break from the same old, same old, we opted to hire a babysitter instead of taking our kids along.
The children are getting older now. Our youngest just turned 2. Sitting through a restaurant meal has become a more realistic goal, and it’s something we’re ready to do more of as a family. That being said, having slightly older kids still hasn’t made restaurant dining a walk in the park. It’s hard to wait for your food when you’re young, hungry, and full of energy. Plus, when the food finally does arrive, it seems like our kids always finish their plates in record time—while we’re left trying to keep them entertained so we can finish our meals.

What do we want? A more enjoyable dining experience. How’re we going to get it? With these 38 screen-free products from Amazon that are perfect for distracting young kids.

1. Water Wow! Reveal Activity Pads

According to a friend of mine, these activity pads from Melissa & Doug are the end-all, be-all of road trip activities. I suspect they’d be great for family meals, too. Using a pen with refillable water storage, little diners can reveal the colors of each picture on the pad.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Water Wow! Reveal Activity Pads are a low-mess painting option, and they’re reusable, so they’re basically every parent’s dream. When wet, the outlines of the pictures fill with color. When the water dries, the paper returns to white with black outlines.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Reusable-Water-Reveal-Activity/dp/B017OW251I/”]Water Wow! Reveal Activity Pads, $9.99 for 2 from Amazon[/link-button]

2. Silly Faces Magnetic Tin

If your kids are over the age of 3, this on-the-go activity is a great way to keep them entertained while you finish your meal in peace (or at least without screaming). With blank faces as their canvases, your kiddos can create works of art by placing ears, eyes, and accessories wherever their hearts desire.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Silly Faces Magnetic Tin comes in a set of two and includes 49 magnets, giving your kids plenty of different ways to fill their time once they’ve pushed away their chicken strips and moved on to making “free lemonade.” Amazon reviewers love this toy, and more than one recommends it as an easy way to keep kids busy while on the go.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Silly-Faces-Magnetic-Fun%C2%A8-Tin/dp/B003DNINB4/”]Silly Faces Magnetic Tin, $8.92 from Amazon[/link-button]

3. Magica Clutching Toy

I’m honestly not sure if it’s harder to keep a busy toddler seated at the table or an infant happy during the course of the meal. Younger kids might be easier to contain, but they’re also more prone to emotional outbursts when they get too bored or tired.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Magica Clutching Toy is a beautiful, wooden collection of large, rainbow-colored beads attached to each other on an elastic string. It’s perfect for an older infant who can sit and grasp on their own. Your baby can shake it, shape it, and gum on it while you and your co-parent enjoy your food.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/HABA-Magica-Clutching-Made-Germany/dp/B0033M22LM/”]Magica Clutching Toy, $15.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

4. Little Chef Activity Book

One of the difficulties of bringing toys to the restaurant is keeping track of the many pieces that can be dropped, thrown, or lost during the meal. What’s so great about a toy like the Melissa & Doug Little Chef Activity Book is that it includes all kinds of fun, interactive activities with parts that all remain attached to the book.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Made from soft fabric, this busy book is perfect for older babies and toddlers. Chef-themed counting activities fill the pages. Your baby can decorate a slice of cake, count the scoops on an ice-cream cone, or even build a sandwich with felt and fabric pieces attached with a string.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Soft-Activity-Baby/dp/B00JBJ0C54/”]Little Chef Soft Activity Book, $12.42 from Amazon[/link-button]

5. Learn to Dress Kitty

My little ones love to zip, button, tie, and more, and I love that activities like these encourage the development of their fine motor skills. Learn to Dress Kitty by ALEX includes 11 different activities for dressing this soft toy kitty, like tying her shoes and buttoning her buttons.

HealthyWay
Amazon

At 21 inches long, this is a larger toy, so it probably needs a spot in a chair or the diaper bag once your food arrives. That being said, it isn’t so big that you’d feel uncomfortable bringing it into a restaurant to distract an antsy child.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0039AQS90/”]Learn to Dress Kitty, $29.77 from Amazon[/link-button]

6. WikkiStix Travel Playset Craft Kit

Our family is new to the world of WikkiStix, and we’re kind of in love. These bendy, twisty, brightly colored sticks can be molded and shaped into flat and three-dimensional objects without leaving a trace of mess behind. Basically, they’ve got all the characteristics of PlayDoh that kids love without the untidiness that moms hate.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The WikkiStix Travel Playset comes in a hard carrying case and includes 144 sticks total in 16 different shades. A booklet full of activities and two connect-the-dot activity sheets are also included in this take-along kit.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/WikkiStix-Traveler-Playset-Molding-Sculpting/dp/B00TF805DK/”]The WikkiStix Travel Playset, $10.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

7. Colorforms Fun Pack

Since stickers are endlessly popular with kids, playing with them makes a great activity while you’re waiting for food to arrive. Stickers are also a great distraction to pull out when the kids decide they’re ready to go, even though you’re still not through with your entree. Colorforms Fun Packs aren’t just any old stickers, either. They’re restickable. Included in the each package is a folding backdrop for placing, peeling, and moving the stickers to create new scenes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

No matter what your kids are into, you can probably find a Colorform they’ll love. Choose from PJ Masks, Barbie, Peppa Pig, and more. At $3.53 each, this restaurant activity can’t be beat!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0743N7NP4/”]Colorforms Fun Pack, $3.53 from Amazon[/link-button]

8. Toy Story Tin Pinball Game

You might remember handheld tin pinball games from your own childhood. This collection features updated themes, including modern Disney favorites like Toy Story, Finding Dory, and Cars. Kids ages 4 and older can pull back the lever, then tilt and tip to collect points.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This game is completely contained. It’s 10 inches tall, so don’t confuse it with those cheap, small knockoffs you can buy at the dollar store. Still, the toy is small enough to throw in a purse or diaper bag, take along on a car rides, or carry into restaurants for a fun few minutes of quiet play.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Disney-Pixar-Story-Classic-Pinball/dp/B06Y167PRC/”]Toy Story Tin Pinball Game, $12.27[/link-button]

9. Toysmith U-Fidget Toy

If you’ve got a kid with the fidgets, take a toy like the Toysmith U-Fidget with you on your next trip out to eat. This toy looks like a ton of fun, with 21 pastel triangles attached by tiny hinges.

HealthyWay
Amazon

To play with this fidget toy, your kiddo only needs to flip the triangles. There are endless shapes they can create by changing the direction of each triangle.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Toysmith-TSM2125-U-Fidget-Toy/dp/B012B9YE0E/”]Toysmith U-Fidget Toy, $5.30 from Amazon[/link-button]

10. Plan Toys Memo Game

We’ve been playing memory games with our oldest since she was around 3 years old. Most of the games we have are big and bulky, requiring a lot of table space and leaving behind a considerable mess. What I love about the Plan Toys Memo Game is that it is so petite. Kids roll a small wooden die with a different color on each side and then choose from 12 little pegs to find the number they rolled.

HealthyWay
Amazon

For our family, small games have been a good way to turn family dinners out into more interactive experiences. Instead of simply keeping kids entertained, they build meaningful interactions among the entire crew.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/PlanToys-4128-Memo-Game/dp/B06VW3H7CT/”]Plan Toy Memo Game, $7.95 from Amazon[/link-button]

11. Toysmith Peg Game

If, like me, you spent many family meals in a popular home cooking chain called Cracker Barrel, playing the Tricky Triangle or Peg Game probably stirs up a little nostalgia. I spent plenty of time passing this game between myself and my siblings during my childhood, and I love the idea of introducing my kids to the same mealtime challenge.

HealthyWay
Amazon

If you’re not familiar with the game, the goal is to get rid of all but one peg from the small triangular board by jumping pegs. It’s surprisingly difficult and requires a ton of concentration, so it’s perfect for a quiet dinner out!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Toysmith-TSM1954-Peg-Game/dp/B004AFVKLE/”]Toysmith Peg Game, $6.13 from Amazon[/link-button]

12. Dover Little Activity Books

For a few years now, we’ve stocked up on these Dover Little Activity Books and hid them away for times when we were desperate to keep our kids entertained. These tiny, pocket-sized books each contain a different interactive activity, usually involving stickers. Build your own cupcake, decorate a butterfly, or spot the differences between two images.

HealthyWay
Amazon

One trick we’ve employed with the Dover Books is to keep a handful tucked away for as long as possible during the meal. They’re our Hail Mary, allowing us to introduce a brand new activity just as the chaos reaches a fever pitch.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Cream-Sundae-Stickers-Little-Activity/dp/048644192X/”]Dover Little Activity Books, $1.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

13. Play Smart Vehicle Picture Puzzles

This book is pretty involved, full of picture puzzle for kids over the age of 3. According to the seller, this book was created from a teaching style used in Japan for many years. It’s all about using fun to learn new things.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These puzzles encourage problem-solving while following a vehicle theme. Your kids will count the boats, guide a rowboat through a maze, and build a road from panels that must be placed just so. Bring along a pair of safety scissors if you take this one to your next dinner out; many of the puzzles involve cutting of some kind.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/4056300259/”]Play Smart Vehicle Picture Puzzles, $6.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

14. Table Topics

Sometimes it’s nice to create a dinner environment that allows parents to talk while kids quietly color and play—but it’s often more desirable to find a low-energy activity that encourages interaction between all members of the family. It’s fun to find something that can turn a normal dinner out into a time of family bonding.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Table Topics aren’t new. They’ve long been a popular way to stir up conversation, and this set created for kids is perfect for the restaurant table. Draw a card from the stack and ask kids to answer in turn. Questions like “What was your favorite Halloween costume?” and “What makes you feel better when you’re sick?” are sure to make for enjoyable and meaningful conversation.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/TableTopics-TG-0210-A-To-Go-Kids/dp/B07F8DRTV3/”]Table Topics To Go for Kids, $8.50 from Amazon[/link-button]

15. Rainbow Scratch Mini Notes

This past week, we picked up a package of scratch art sheets after a few rainy days stuck indoors. We’ve been using them at home, but I can see how bringing them along to shake up your typical kids’ menu coloring sheet would change the dynamic of a family meal out.

HealthyWay
Amazon

I love this set of Scratch Art Mini Notes from Melissa & Doug. The small size makes it simple to throw into a purse or diaper bag and dig out when you need to keep a rowdy set of kids entertained.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Scratch-Rainbow-Wooden/dp/B005K0B8WO/”]Rainbow Scratch Mini Notes, $7.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

16. Silly Putty

Dinner-time peace and quiet doesn’t have to be complicated. Silly Putty is a classic, and for good reason! Kids can mold shapes from this mess-free, pliable putty. They can smash it into their kids’ menu and watch the text transfer. They can press it onto flatware or other small objects to make molds.

HealthyWay
Amazon

One word of warning from someone who learned this lesson the hard way: Set a ground rule early that throwing or bouncing silly putty needs to be reserved for outdoors. It’s never allowed at the dining table!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Crayola-08-0313-Original-Silly-Putty/dp/B00C8T0TJI/”]Crayola Original Silly Putty, $4.12 from Amazon[/link-button]

17. Left Right Center

Left Right Center is a dice game for anyone over the age of 5. The goal of this game is to be the last player with chips, but hanging onto your chips is a game of chance. Rolling the dice decides if you will pass your chips left or right, or push them into the center pot.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This game is wildly popular on Amazon, with over 1,590 reviews and an aggregate score of five stars. Reviewers suggest the fun idea of swapping out the chips for other objects, like M&Ms, but we’d recommend saving that option for dessert!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F9YDKY/”]Left Right Center $6.10 from Amazon[/link-button]

18. Spot It!

My first two kids are just now reaching an age that they’re old enough to be interested in card games, and that’s a whole lot of fun! Available in both a Junior and 7+ version, Spot It! is going to be the next take-along game we add to our family’s stash.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This is a visual perception game. Images are scattered across round playing cards. The goal is to find the one image that two cards have in common as quickly as possible. The cards come in a tin case for easy transportation and quick clean-up when your dinner arrives. I honestly can’t believe we’ve only just learned about this game, since it has five stars and over 6,650 reviews on Amazon.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0075XNGGK/”]Spot It!, $7.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

19. Tegu Travel Kits

We don’t own these magnetic wooden blocks, but a friend recently convinced me to place an order. I plan to pull them out when my kids need a little distraction. This Tegu Travel Kit includes eight wooden blocks, all magnetic, that can be stacked and shaped in a variety of combinations.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Since this set comes with a felt pouch, it’s great for taking along to a restaurant, where it’ll provides simple entertainment for kids of all ages. Choose from eight different color themes, including mahogany, tints, and blues.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Tegu-Piece-Pocket-Magnetic-Wooden/dp/B004WMCZGY/”]Tegu Travel Kit, $30.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

20. Unifix Cubes

If you’re looking for a stacking and building activity for the dinner table, but would rather spend a little less cash, this Unifix Cubes 100 Piece Set might be the better option for you. This set includes blocks of 10 different colors, and each block can be stacked on another.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Included in this kit is an activity book for guided play. In addition to building, Unifix Cubes work great for counting and math games.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Didax-DD-225-Unifix-Cubes-count/dp/B0007PC9CK/”]Didax Unifix Cubes, $14.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

21. Crayola Color Wonder Kit

Color Wonder has become super-popular among parents because it’s entirely mess-free. The magic markers included in this kit only color on the provided coloring sheets, so you won’t have to scrub marks off of tiny fingers, the tablecloth, or restaurant dishes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Crayola Wonder Kits come in a ton of different themes, like the animal-themed version linked below. All 30 pieces of this art kit are contained in a hard carrying case, so it’s ideal for restaurant entertainment.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071G4G3LT/”]Crayola Color Wonder Art Kit, $24.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

22. AquaDoodle

Let’s be honest: Keeping track of 30-piece kits might not always be what you’re hoping for in restaurant entertainment. If you’d like an art project with fewer pieces, the AquaDoodle Travel Doodle might be more in line with what you’d like to buy.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This doodle pad includes two pieces, a folding portfolio, and a refillable water pen. The pen changes the color of the surface of the portfolio, allowing for mess-free doodling that disappears when the doodle pad dries.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/AquaDoodle-Accessories-Travel-Doodle-Neon/dp/B00FXWBARM/”]Aquadoodle Travel Doodle, $12.88 from Amazon[/link-button]

23. Jaq Jaq Mess-Free Chalkboard

My kids love drawing with chalk, but chalk comes with a lot of mess. When we discovered this mess-free, portable option from Jaq Jaq a few years back, we were sold. Available in a variety of prints, these Doodle It Books are compact and ideal for taking along on trips to the restaurant, medical waiting rooms, or airplanes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Included with the chalkboard sketchbook are four ButterStix, which are the dust-free chalk pieces from Jaq Jaq.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Jaq-Bird-Childrens-Doodle-Drawing/dp/B010CQKMWC/”]Jaq Jaq Bird Doodle it Book, $20.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

24. Spiral-Bound Sketchbook

Keep it basic. Bring a sketchbook along! Children have amazing imaginations and don’t always need a lot of hand-holding to keep themselves entertained. This spiral-bound sketchbook is only 7 inches by 10 inches, which means it should fit easily in a diaper bag or small purse.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Don’t be afraid to offer a few prompts if your child is having trouble getting started. Bring along some colored pencils or crayons, of course!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FF1Z9WQ/”]Spiral-Bound Sketch & Drawing Book, $9.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

25. Twistable Crayons

These twistable crayons pair perfectly with the spiral-bound sketchbook above. Instead of worrying about sharpening dull pencils or replacing crayons snapped between clumsy fingers, these twistable crayons sharpen themselves.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This pack includes eight different colors of Crayola crayons. Because of their plastic casing, they’re break-resistant. When your child runs out of crayon, simply twist to reveal more colorful potential.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Crayola-52-7408-Twistables-Crayons/dp/B00178Q28S/”]Twistable Crayons, $5.55 from Amazon[/link-button]

26. Take-Along Shape Sorter

Without a doubt, my youngest child is the hardest to keep content during a dinner out. Toddlers just hate to hold still, and a meal at a restaurant can go on for much longer than the at-home equivalent. Because of this, it’s really important to bring along age-appropriate activities when you want to have an enjoyable meal.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This Take-Along Shape Sorter is a portable version of an old classic. Older infants and toddlers are challenged to shove shapes through their matching holes. A handle and zippable soft case sets this option apart from others.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Take-Along-Activity-Textured/dp/B00EYTM9IY/”]Take-Along Shape Sorter, $16.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

27. Travel Legos

All three of my kids spend hours each week with their Legos, but the idea of taking them out of the house, into the van, and then into a restaurant makes my head spin. Knowing this set of Travel Legos comes in a hard carrying case makes me feel a little better about the idea of bringing Legos along for our next family dinner.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This set of Legos contains 213 blocks, which is just enough for a few really great builds without totally trashing the table before you even start eating.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075QRWRYP/”]LEGO Classic Creative Suitcase, $15.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

28. Melissa & Doug Reusable Tape

Reusable stickers meet washi tape in this Melissa & Doug Tape Activity Book. This kit includes a spiral-bound notebook and four rolls of reusable washi tape. Activities include a fun variety of scenes, like creating the spokes of a bicycle, decorating a lollipop, or creating laces for shoes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

According to the sellers of this product, it isn’t just good for entertainment. It also helps young kids develop fine motor skills and improve their hand-eye coordination. Hand it over for independent play, or turn it into a parent-child activity by quizzing them on colors and shapes.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EX5JAAO/”]Melissa & Doug Reusable Tape, $4.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

29. Wooden Lacing Cheese Toy

The only thing better than a cheese-shaped toy is cheese itself, but this fun lacing toy just might keep your toddlers happy enough to prevent them from getting hangry. This wooden toy looks just like a wedge of cheddar. Holes cover the surface, and your child can use a lacing stick attached to a string to work their way through the maze to the other side.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The reason a toy like this is so dang perfect as a take-along is that all the parts are attached to each other, so you don’t have to worry about chasing pieces across the restaurant floor.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073P3WD18/”]Montessori Wooden Lacing Cheese Toy, $9.54 from Amazon[/link-button]

30. Kids Mad Libs

Mad Libs is a game my kids and I all enjoy, so we love to bring these books along when we go out to eat. Typical Mad Libs are a little too complex for young kids, but this version was created with little brains in mind.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Even younger kids who can’t spell or write will get a kick out of chiming in with their answers while you transcribe their responses. Beware! Breaking out this game may introduce fart jokes to the dinner table.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Kid-Libs-Mad-Roger-Price/dp/0843128275/”]Kids Mad Libs, $4.49 from Amazon[/link-button]

31. Kids Mazes Book

This book is literally everything, or at least everything mazes. Bring a copy along for your puzzle- and maze-obsessed kids for a quiet activity while they wait for their meal (or wait for you to wrap yours up).

HealthyWay
Amazon

In this book, you will find 144 colored pages of mazes of varying difficulties. Based on the reviews, some of the mazes are simple enough for kids age 6 and older, while others are challenging enough for teens and adults.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/The-Everything-Kids-Mazes-Book/dp/1580625584/”]The Everything Kids’ Mazes Book, $6.68 from Amazon[/link-button]

32. Comotomo Silicone Baby Teether

Pro-parenting tip: Never leave home without an extra change of clothes and a teether. You never know when a diaper change is going to go badly, or when a perfectly happy baby will start experiencing teething pain.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This Comotomo Baby Teether is a great option for baby to gum on during a meal since it has an easy-to-grasp handle. It’s made from silicone, which means when (not if!) your baby drops it on the floor, you can hide it away and then boil it when you get home.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Comotomo-Silicone-Baby-Teether-Orange/dp/B00913DY1O/”]Comotomo Silicone Baby Teether, $6.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

33. Baby Animals Black and White

Books illustrated with pictures in high contrast color schemes, like black and white, are easily seen by the developing eyes of a young baby. Baby Animals Black and White features eight different baby animals on each of its pages.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s a board book, so it’s easy for smaller hands to hang on to. It’s also a lot of fun to read together, at home or out at your favorite restaurant.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Animals-Black-Phyllis-Limbacher-Tildes/dp/0881063134/”]Baby Animals Black and White, $4.76 from Amazon[/link-button]

34. Bubbles Plush Buckle Toy

I’m always amazed by what will hold a toddler’s attention and what won’t. I can try my hardest to keep them entertained with talking, silly faces, and funny noises with no luck, but if I pull out something that snaps, zips, or buckles, they’ll stay endlessly happy.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This Plush Buckle Toy, which is apparently named Bubbles, is a baby-blue figure with rainbow-colored buckles hanging from each side. The bright colors will keep kids’ attention and the challenge of getting the buckles to snap will keep them focused while everyone else chows down.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/BUCKLE-TOY-Bubbles-Learning-Childrens/dp/B01D3XGNBA/”]Bubbles Plush Buckle Toy, $21.99[/link-button]

35. Velvet Animal Finger Puppets

Puppets are my last resort. I hate being responsible for acting out scenes and making weird noises, but they almost always work when I need to cheer up a crabby kid. Thankfully, my husband is a much better sport when it comes to acting the fool to get a smile out of our kids.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These Velvet Finger Puppets are small enough to keep in the bottom of your bag so you can fish them out when things take a turn for the worse. Ten different animals are included in this set, including a hippo, a cow, and a frog. Since they fit on your fingers, they’re definitely a restaurant-friendly toy.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Velvet-Puppets-Children-Playtime-Schools/dp/B00VU5R8JA/”]Velvet Animal Finger Puppets, $7.99[/link-button]

36. Animal Figurines

It didn’t take long after my second was born to realize that the toys that kept my older daughter’s attention weren’t going to work with this one. While my oldest was into puzzles and challenges, my youngest loves pretend play.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Sometimes, making dinner out easier is all about trying different things until you find what works for each child. Once I realized my younger daughter preferred little people and animals for acting out scenes at the dinner table, we were able to eat happily as a family. This set of Animals Figures is identical to the set we pull out any time she gets bored.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Yeonha-Toys-Realistic-Toddler-Learning/dp/B01N30YNCA/”]Animal Figures, $13.98 from Amazon[/link-button]

37. Flappy the Elephant Plush Toy

Sometimes my babies just need to bring a friend along to make their meal a little more fun. Each of my kids have a take-along stuffie—we have a Lalaloopsy, an Olaf, and a Bitty Baby that all accompany us on outings on a regular basis.

HealthyWay
Amazon

If your baby doesn’t have a stuffie they love, consider picking one toy to bring along every time you head out to a family meal. This battery-operated plush figure is adorable and perfect for getting some giggles and smiles out of a cranky baby. The floppy ears on this stuffed elephant flip and flop, covering his eyes for an impromptu game of peekaboo.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Gund-Animated-Flappy-Elephant-Plush/dp/B01AC7SF7K/”]Flappy the Elephant Plush Toy, $32.00 from Amazon[/link-button]

38. Melissa & Doug Felt Friends On-The-Go

Melissa & Doug is a company that’s really corned the portable toy market for young kids. The Felt Friends On-The-Go series comes with 142 felt stickers in different shapes and colors for building 12 different felt animals.

HealthyWay
Amazon

If the phrase “142 felt stickers” makes you twitch a little, there is something you should know—the creators of Melissa & Doug designed this kit to be incredibly portable and easy to pack up. A resealable compartment keeps all loose parts dependably contained.

20 Cleaning Hacks To Make Every Mom’s Life Easier

Becoming a parent is like living on a whole other planet. On the one hand, you have to navigate taking care of a small human, and on the other hand, you’re trying to keep up with the demands of a home that’s not going to clean itself. Balancing the two is where things start to get tricky.
Before I had my son, cleaning up was relegated to weekends and only took up to a few hours tops. I didn’t fully grasp how hard it would be to do this with an adorable toddler running amuck all over the house. Case in point: Their hands are always sticky, and they love to leave a trail of toys behind them (I’m looking at you, building blocks).

HealthyWay
iStock.com/shironosov

Cleaning up messes a bajillion times a day can get exhausting, to say the least.
Luckily, the internet is here and ready to make our lives easier by providing a plethora of creative parenting hacks to pick and choose from. In the time I spent researching this article, for example, I texted my husband a minimum of five times with screenshots of different hacks we needed to try (thank you, wise redditors).
Below are 20 of my favorites to help busy moms clean, organize, and—hopefully—prevent messes before they even begin.
So sit back, put your feet up, and prepare to be awed.

1. Stay calm and remove crayon from your walls.

This is first on our list because there’s nothing quite like finishing up a day of deep cleaning to find your child has drawn their latest masterpiece all over your walls (been here too many times to count). Before you go into a full blown panic attack, rest easy knowing that there is a safe, non-toxic way to remove crayon from your walls.

HealthyWay
Amazon

We owe our endless thanks to one savvy redditor who discovered the magic solution to removing these pesky lines: Combine 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 1/8 teaspoon of lemon essential oil. Not only will you breathe a sigh of relief, it will leave your home smelling so fresh and so clean.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/US-Organic-100-Lemon-Essential/dp/B073NS9CNQ”]US Organic’s 100% Pure Lemon Essential Oil, $9.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

2. Organize your kid’s artwork using a drying rack.

As a mother to a miniature painting aficionado (aka toddler), I know firsthand how coloring pages can end up all over your living room floor and pretty much anywhere that’s been recently tidied. Picking up strewn coloring pages gets annoying, let me tell you.

HealthyWay
Amazon

But all of this seemingly unmanageable mess can be easily remedied with one specific item: your average drying rack. Rubbermaid’s Large White Dish Drainer’s coated wire cushions are great for placing coloring books and loose pages. You can also use the caddy for storing markers and crayons.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0044URHD0″]Rubbermaid’s Large White Dish Drainer, $17.73 from Amazon[/link-button]

3. Wash baby clothes in mesh lingerie bags.

Babies have the teeniest, tiniest of clothes that love to get tangled (and lost) in your washing machine and dryer. More specifically: baby socks and hand mittens (where on earth do they go?).

HealthyWay
Amazon

Luckily, there’s a simple way to keep these delicates from tearing or disappearing altogether. Place these itty bitty clothing items in mesh lingerie bags and then toss them into the washing machine without worry. Gogooda’s Mesh Laundry Bags for Delicates are exactly what you need. You get seven different sizes, which also comes in handy when washing your child’s beloved (yet stinky) teddy bear.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Gogooda-Laundry-Bags-Delicates-Underwear/dp/B075YV41GQ”]Gogooda’s Mesh Laundry Bags for Delicates, $8.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

4. Pick up glitter with your lint roller.

Ah, childhood, that magical time when small humans spread sparkly powder all over their families’ furniture and clothes. While we love our children’s artwork, we’re not a big fan of the glitter cleanup.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Fortunately, the Extra Sticky Lint Roller Set is here to save you hours of cleaning (and added headache). Use it for easy glitter pick-up and for collecting those tiny pieces of paper from craft projects. The set comes with three refills of 60 sheets each to make cleanups a breeze. Additional bonus: You can remove all those food crumbs from your child’s car seat (finally!).
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Sticky-Refills-Cleaner-Remover-Durable/dp/B07DVYKWNF”]Extra Sticky Lint Roller Set, $5.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

5. A Genius Way to Clean Up All Your Kid’s Toys

You have to love a hack that is so obvious you don’t know why you didn’t think of it before. Washing your child’s toys of all those yucky germs is tiresome and time-consuming (they’re going to get dirty again STAT).

HealthyWay
Amazon

Throwing them in your dishwasher gets all of this work done with minimal effort on your part.
And if you’re worried about using harmful chemicals on toys that will (most likely) wind up in your kiddos’ mouths, fear not: Sparkle Clean by True Green Organics offers a non-toxic dishwasher detergent that’s eco-safe and 100 percent organic.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/True-Green-Organics-Ingredients-Concentrated/dp/B0711WHLCQ”]Sparkle Clean by True Green Organics, $16.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

6. Get rid of food-coloring stains with this clever trick.

For my son’s first birthday, we had studio pictures taken of him sticking his angelical face into a very large, blue smash cake (side note: These are spectacularly fun and something every parent should try!). However, getting the blue food coloring off his tiny face and hands was a challenge. Needless to say, water and soap alone weren’t cutting it.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Thankfully, we can all continue our colorful baking projects without stress—simply squirt a little whitening toothpaste onto the stain and massage the area for two minutes. Then wash off and repeat as necessary.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Crest-White-Whitening-Toothpaste-Radiant/dp/B075S6RJTQ”]Crest 3D White Whitening Toothpaste, $10.49 from Amazon[/link-button]

7. A magical pacifier that stays clean.

Who doesn’t love the ease of calming a crying baby with a pacifier? What we don’t love so much: Worrying about all those yucky (and scary) germs considering baby’s favorite pacifier gets dropped all over the place. If only there was some magical pacifier that would close when hitting the floor. Well, you’re in luck, because such an item exists!

HealthyWay
Amazon

The RaZbaby Keep-It-Kleen Rosa Penguin Pacifier will not only save you the hassle of having to constantly clean these tiny (yet necessary) objects, but they also come in all kinds of jazzy colors and stylish designs for you to pick and choose from.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/RaZbaby-Kleen-Pacifier-Penguin-Months/dp/B007P5IKSW”]RaZbaby Keep-It-Kleen Rosa Penguin Pacifier, $6.44 from Amazon[/link-button]

8. This instant stain remover is your new BFF.

Taking your kids on a picnic or out for dinner? Expect disaster to strike.
Just kidding…sort of.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Let’s face it: Children have the uncanny ability to spill any and all things onto their clothes. And sometimes these are brand new clothes you artfully arranged before leaving the house (sigh). So what’s a busy mom to do when faced with this dreadfully common scenario?
Enter: Instant Stain Remover by Tide. This powerful little pen helps you get some of the toughest fresh food and drink stains out before they set in. It’s also super portable so you can stash one away in your purse for easy access.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Tide-Pack-Stain-Remover-Instant/dp/B01JH0TY3M”]Tide Instant Stain Remover $24.99, from Amazon[/link-button]

9. A Smarter Way for Messy Snacking

Speaking of stains, why not avoid them altogether by dipping your child in a bath while eating their popsicles, ice cream cones, or peanut butter? Place these gooey snacks in a cup and keep them secured on a bath caddy. This way, they can enjoy a yummy treat without all the added mess.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Try out Hermosa Collection Kids Bathtub Storage Basket, which easily adjusts to fit most tubs. Bonus: The caddy doubles as a way to keep your kid’s toys and bath products organized.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Hermosa-Collection-Kids-Organizer-Bathtub/dp/B01E1XQ7IU”]Hermosa Collection Kids Bathtub Storage Basket, $19.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

10. A Portable Placemat That Catches Messes

I’m a big believer in avoiding cleanups by preventing them in the first place. That’s why I was thrilled to come across Benedict Harry’s Reusable Silicone Baby Food Placemat. Take it anywhere and the built-in scoop compartment catches the mess as it falls always. This means you’ll spend less time cleaning up fallen foods from the floor (which comes especially handy when eating out) and more time enjoying your meal.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The placemat is also made out of hygienic material that prevents mold growth and bacteria, so you can rest easy knowing your little one isn’t eating off a germy surface. Roll it up and take it on the go!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.ca/Reusable-Silicone-Placemat-Reusable-Restaurant/dp/B07F9MT81W”]Benedict Harry’s Reusable Silicone Placemat, $14.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

11. Create a water-resistant outdoor play table.

Have a wooden picnic table you don’t want getting stained by art supplies? Rather than fret over potential spillage, try covering it with oilcloth to protect against paint leaks.

HealthyWay
Amazon

My little one (the painting aficionado) pretty much always ends up with finger paint all over his palms. Oilcloth is a simple remedy for having to wash paint off of indoor and outdoor furniture. It also doubles as protection against messy snacks and water games.
Bonus: Use it for fast cleanups when working on baking projects.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y3HKWJS”]Blue Cherry Oilcloth Fabric, $7 from Amazon[/link-button]

12. Wipe away dirty pots and pans in a breeze.

It’s no surprise no one likes to do the dishes—but even worse? DIRTY POTS AND PANS. I’ve had my fair share of scrub-filled afternoons that could have been easily avoided with this life-changing hack. According to Mike Sphor at Buzzfeed, placing a dryer sheet in a dirty pan before soaking overnight will make it easy to wipe away the baked-on crust in the morning.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets will help you do the trick, and they also provide a gentle, hypoallergenic fabric-softening option for your clothes.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bounce-Fabric-Softener-Sheets-Gentle/dp/B003CP14R8″]Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets, $9.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

13. Prevent gooey popsicle messes.

My sweet munchkin of a toddler loves popsicles. Problem is, as soon as I place one in his tiny eager hands, it’s already melting away onto his palms, shirt, and pants.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Fortunately, there’s an incredibly simple solution to this problem and you can find it right inside your cupboard: Push the popsicle stick through the center of a cupcake liner before handing it to your kid. Easy peasy.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/STARUBY-Cupcake-Colorful-Disposable-Standard/dp/B07CWKVQQZ”]STARUBY Cupcake Liners, $6.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

14. Simply Clean: A Book for All Your Organizing Needs

Whether you’re a working mom or a stay at home mom (or, like me, some hybrid of the two)—you probably want to spend less time cleaning and more time with your little one.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Becky Rapinchuk, author of Simply Clean understands this long-standing dilemma and offers us an easy-to-use guide for cleaning our homes in just 10 minutes a day (no joke). But more than simply tidying up, she teaches us to transform a chore into a habit that we can pass on to our kids.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Simply-Clean-Keeping-Organized-Beautiful/dp/1501158791″]Simply Clean by Becky Rapinchuk, $13.59 from Amazon[/link-button]

15. Keep laundry (and the rest of your life) smelling fresh.

Nothing is more delightful than opening a drawer full of clothes and having the fresh scent of lavender waft all over the room. Your own DIY sachets are perfect for keeping kids’ clothes and gym bags smelling fresh. Just put in a few dried lavender leaves dotted with essential oil in a mesh bag and voila!

HealthyWay
Amazon

Bonus: Keep one in your car for some much-needed aromatherapy.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/HRX-Package-Organza-Wedding-Drawstring/dp/B073J4RS9C”]HRX Package Gift Drawstring Bags, $9.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

16. Peroxide is your friend.

As a non-toxic, all-natural chemical, hydrogen peroxide can perform countless wonders that range from disinfecting food prep surfaces to getting rid of burnt spots on pots and pans to—you guessed it—cleaning kids’ toys!

HealthyWay
Amazon

Harness the power of peroxide by filling a large bucket with just enough peroxide to cover the toys. Toss the toys in and let them fizz and bubble. After they stop bubbling, take them out and let them dry.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Swan-Hydrogen-Peroxide-Topical-Ounces/dp/B004Q2GEVW”]Two pack of Swan Hydrogen Peroxide, $9.40 from Amazon[/link-button]

17. A Chore Chart for Fun Cleanups

As they say: The best defense is a good offense. In other words, let the kids in on the housecleaning action! Create good habits by teaching your small humans the importance of a clean and tidy home. The Roscoe Learning Responsibility Star Chart can help you make it a fun experience by giving kids a visual reward system that they can work toward achieving.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The board keeps track of progress on chores and can easily be hung in any room. It also comes with reward stars that will take you back to your own childhood (who didn’t get a star on their forehead as a kid?).
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Roscoe-Learning-Responsibility-Customize-Magnetic/dp/B01FKFMFXE”]Learning Responsibility Star Chart, $19.97 from Amazon[/link-button]

18. This Instant DIY Home-Freshener

Got a stinky-smelling house and guests arriving any minute? Don’t panic, redditor jimothywhite gives us this fabulous tip: “Put two caps full of vanilla extract (you can use other oils, such as lemon and lavender) in a coffee cup (or oven-proof dish), then place it in the oven at 300 degrees for one hour. The smell will start to spread after around 20 minutes and encompass the whole house after the hour duration. Should last for at least a day.”

HealthyWay
Amazon

(A note of caution for pet-owners: Essential oils can pose a risk to our furry friends, especially for cats who can have an adverse respiratory reaction upon inhaling them.)
Pro tip: Switch them out during the changing seasons, for example, nutmeg oil for Halloween and cinnamon for a cozy Christmas scent.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Vanilla-Essential-Oil-Fabulous-Frannie/dp/B00BKQIMBC”]Fabulous Frannie’s Vanilla Essential Oil, $6.50 from Amazon[/link-button]

19. Remove stickers with this clever trick.

Confession: As a child, I collected all manner of stickers. I picked them up from road trips, those little toy machines at malls, and pretty much everywhere you can imagine. That’s right, I was that kid. But I also took it a step further and stuck all of these treasures on my wooden drawer cabinet. When it came time for my parents to sell it, there was no way these suckers were coming off. If only they’d known about this one small miracle hack: coconut oil.

HealthyWay
Amazon

According to Melissa Maker at Fisher-Price, you can “mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda to create a paste to remove stubborn stickers.”
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Viva-Naturals-Organic-Virgin-Coconut/dp/B00DS842HS”]Viva Naturals Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, $13.28 from Amazon[/link-button]

20. Baby Wipes: The Mother of All Hacks

You know how in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the father of the bride-to-be is always using Windex as a cure-all for everything—ranging from glassware to a random pimple? That’s how I feel about baby wipes. Basically, there is nothing they can’t do.
Here are just a few of the things you can do with these multi-purpose wipes to make your life easier: Wipe off dust, get rid of deodorant marks on your clothes, use for quick oil stains, clean your kid’s toys, and sanitize germ-ridden public areas.

HealthyWay
Amazon

We love Pampers Aqua Sensitive Water Baby Wipes, which are free of alcohols, dyes, and fragrances. Aside from cleanups, you can also use them on your little one without worrying about irritants.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Pampers-Water-Based-Diaper-Pop-Top-Travel/dp/B077D3JKVR”]Pampers Aqua Sensitive Water Baby Wipes, $14.97 from Amazon[/link-button]

40 Children's Toys And Games That Adults Will Love, Too

Work days would be so much better with mandatory afternoon naps and break rooms filled with fun toys and games instead of the lingering scent of your coworker’s tuna casserole.
While you sadly can’t turn back time and take all those naps you refused as a kid (seriously, what were we thinking?), you can take a break from being a grown-up with grown-up responsibilities with these 40 kids’ products that are so fun, you won’t want to go back to work.

1. Never miss snack time again with this must-have item.

One of the best things about being a kid? Snack time. Let’s be honest; who didn’t love chowing down on peanut butter crackers or an ice cream sandwich two hours after lunch? But as adults, we’re lucky if we get to snarf down a sad desk lunch, much less take time for nutritious snack breaks throughout the day (and no, the six cups of coffee you had before lunchtime doesn’t count).

HealthyWay
Amazon

Feed your inner kid and make snack time a priority with this Bentgo Bento-Style Lunchbox. With five perfectly snack-size compartments inside (even a little round one for dipping), you’ll never be hangry at work again.
Bentgo Bento-Style Lunch Box, $27.99 on Amazon

2. Everyone needs snug-as-a-bug jammies.

Kids jammies are so stinking cute, especially if they’re the one-piece variety (bonus points for footies). But as an adult,  our go-to jammies are decidedly not cute; your hubby’s tatty old gym shorts and that oversized t-shirt you’ve been rocking since college could definitely use an upgrade.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Luckily, with these unisex animal onesies, you can be just as cute and cozy as your kids; plus, they double as great last-minute Halloween costumes in a pinch!
Songsongbear Cosplay Costume Pajamas, from $19.99 on Amazon

3. Bowl a lucky strike with this fun lawn game.

Bowling is so much fun when you’re a kid. Somehow as a child, you don’t think about the fact that hundreds of people have worn those same stinky bowling shoes before you, and you aren’t at all bothered by the fact that an extremely sticky substance is all over your fingers thanks to a dirty bowling ball.

HealthyWay
Amazon

With this Perfect Life Ideas Inflatable Backyard Family Bowling Set, which features six inflatable weighted pins and a giant inflatable bowling ball, you can bowl Fred Flintstone-style in bare feet in the comfort of your own backyard and never have to wear someone else’s bowling shoes again. The only drawback? There are no lanes in backyard bowling, so you definitely have to watch out for a rogue breeze that might carry your inflatable bowling ball off course.
Perfect Life Ideas Inflatable Bowling Set, from $19.98 on Amazon

4. This game takes rubber chickens to a whole new level.

We’re not sure why the rubber chicken is still a hallmark of those slapstick comedy routines kids (and a lot of adults) think are so hilarious, but they are. Keep the comedy routine going with Flickin’ Chicken, a hilarious lawn game from Haywire Group that’s sort of like a rubber chicken version of horseshoes.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s exactly what it sounds like: players fling rubber chickens towards a target with the goal to get as close to center as possible. Kids and adults alike will love practicing their rubber chicken precision, which is especially laugh-inducing, considering rubber chickens have a tendency to go their own way when tossed.
Haywire Group Flickin’ Chicken, $19.77 on Amazon

5. Are you afraid of the dark?

Kids aren’t the only ones who need nightlights! Admit it: you hate stumbling to the bathroom in the dark at midnight, and sometimes you sleep with a closet light on after watching a particularly scary movie.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Instead of hiding under the covers or using your phone’s flashlight feature, why not purchase this ultra adorable Elfeland silicone cat night light for yourself? It’s soft, squishy, portable, lights up in 12 soft glowing colors, and even comes with a handy remote for easy control at your fingertips.
Elfeland Children’s Night Light, from $15.89 on Amazon

6. If you build it…

Your kid might have built an electric motor for her science fair project, but you’ll also love this Tinkering Labs Stem Kit that allows you to build endless motors, robots, and even working cars. Even better, you can combine the kit with existing LEGO sets and other toys to create unique projects.
HealthyWayMaybe the most fun thing about this toy is the challenge cards that come in each kit, prompting kids and adults alike to challenge their creativity by “building projects that can scramble an egg” or draw curvy lines.” What does that look like? You get to decide!
Tinkering Labs Stem Kit, $59 on Amazon

7. Do you want to build a snowman?

Remember those epic neighborhood snowball fights you had as a kid? Now, bundling up and trudging out into the cold only to get pelted with more cold snow doesn’t seem so fun. We’d much prefer staying inside and sipping hot cocoa, thank you very much.

HealthyWay
Amazon

With the Snowtime Anytime Indoor Snowball Fight, you can recapture the magic of winter anytime of the year without leaving your warm, cozy house. Another fun thing to do with these plush snowballs? Ambush your kids when they’re least expecting it. It’s like getting hit with a marshmallow, so unlike real snowball fights, these don’t end in tears.
Snowtime Anytime Indoor Snowball Fight, $39.99 on Amazon

8. These aren’t your average pancakes.

Have you seen those epic meal creations some moms make for their kids? Who has the time for that? When you’re a grown-up, the only person who’s going to turn your food into a work of art is, well, you.

HealthyWay
Amazon

So bring the fun back to breakfast with the Whiskware Pancake Art Kit that features two pancake shapers, a squirt art bottle for customizing your pancake creations, and a blender bottle for mixing up the batter. You can even download the Whiskware Pancake Art App to get tutorials on fun designs, and unlike those crazy mealtime designs, these pancake creations don’t take a ton of time to whip up, either.
Whiskware Pancake Art Kit, $24.20 on Amazon

9. Bring on the rain!

Kids love splashing through puddles and playing in the rain; you will too with these too-cute Stephen Joseph Pop-Up Umbrellas in a wide variety of kids’ favorite things: sharks, unicorns, mermaids, and more.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Play pretend with these fun, colorful umbrellas. They’re just the thing to brighten up any gloomy, rainy day.
Stephen Joseph Pop-Up Umbrella, from $15.90 on Amazon

10. Secretly, you’re a mermaid.

Kids aren’t the only ones who will love this cute-as-a-button 4M Mermaid Doll-Making Kit (which also comes in fairy, princess, and ballerina, if mermaids aren’t your thing).

HealthyWay
Amazon

The kit is ideal for satisfying the urge to craft without spending a ton on materials and supplies—you don’t even need a needle and thread! And, at just eight inches tall, this little mermaid makes the perfect desk accessory to remind you that even though you’re really not Ariel, you are in your heart, and that’s where it counts, right?
4M Mermaid Doll-Making Kit, $10.99 on Amazon

11. Light up the room with a dinosaur.

Kids love dinosaurs because they’re giant, they roar, and they’re extinct—so how scary can they really be? But we’re grown-ups, and we love learning all about our prehistoric friends just as much as our kids.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Ok, so maybe we just love looking at Chris Pratt save the day in Jurassic Park, but who cares? We still adore this 3D T-Rex Kids’ Lamp. With its hologram and color-changing effects, this dino lamp is the perfect accessory to add a little light and levity to an otherwise ho-hum cubicle space.
Wiscky 3D Dinosaur Lamp, $16.99 on Amazon

12. Bring back the ’90s with this throwback gem.

Every middle-school-aged girl wanted for Christmas in 1994 was a Polly Pocket compact. Like most kids in the ’90s, we lived for Polly Pocket and her pint-sized friends and accessories.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Now you can introduce a whole new generation to a little piece of your childhood (and play with her yourself) with the Polly Pocket Flamingo Floatie Compact. Each Polly Pocket compact is just like you remember; secret reveals, tiny accessories, and big adventures.
Polly Pocket Flamingo Floatie Compact, $14.97 on Amazon

13. Cuddle up with the cutest (plush) animal in the world.

Kristen Bell isn’t the only one who loves sloths. But unless you’re planning on breaking some international exotic animal importation laws, keeping a real sloth is probably out of the picture.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You can still get your sloth snuggles with the Wild Republic Hanging Three Toed Sloth Plush. They’re downright adorable, and we’ll just say it: These plush sloths make a way better snuggle companion that that lumpy old body pillow.
Wild Republic Hanging Three Toed Sloth Plush, $19.99 on Amazon

14. Unleash your inner Mozart.

Kids love, and we mean love, any toy that makes an inordinate amount of loud noise. Most parents spend almost an equal amount of time trying to keep raucous music-making to a minimum, but the MukikiM Rock and Roll It Piano is a toy that both adults and children will love to play.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s compact, so it really does roll up easily, and it even comes with a color-coded songbook so you can play all your greatest hits. When you’re finished rocking out, just roll the piano up and store it out of sight until your next jam session.
MukikiM Rock and Roll It Rainbow Piano, $59.80 on Amazon

15. Turn weeknight dinners into a game night with this fun accessory.

Has your kid ever refused to eat because they didn’t like the plate the food was served on or that their favorite fork was in the dishwasher? Keep toddler tantrums at bay with this Fred & Friends Dinner Winner Dino Tray.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Kids will love this board game-inspired meal tray where a treat awaits upon a clean plate—which is when they win the game. Mom and dad may want to get in on the fun too with other options that include an Enchanted Forest game tray and a Pirate game tray. Dinnertime has never been more fun!

16. Ahoy, mateys!

Kids love to play pirates, always on the search for buried treasure and adventure.

HealthyWay
Amazon

And adults can swashbuckle like Jack Sparrow too, but instead of setting sail on the high seas, you’ll be sailing through the skies with the X-Kites 3D Supersize Pirate Ship, complete with a sturdy fiberglass frame. Eye patch, parrot, wooden legs, and treasure maps are sold separately.
X-Kites 3D Supersize Pirate Ship, $37.27 on Amazon

17. This kids’ toy is a great stress reliever.

Remember Bozo Bop It? The slightly terrifying clown kids loved to knock over, but wouldn’t stay down?

HealthyWay
Amazon

Well, now you can get a Mini 5” Bozo the Clown Bop Bag, a pint-sized adult stress reliever masquerading as a kids’ toy, perfect to keep on your desk when you just need to take a break. He’s squishy, so reach for this little Bozo when Carol from Accounting sends yet another unnecessary office payroll memo.
Mini Bozo the Clown Bop Bag, $19.50 from Amazon

18. It’s the picture-perfect toy.

Much like a rotary phone, kids these days probably have no idea what an old-school 35mm camera is, much less the joy of getting back a roll of film from one-hour photo. Kids these days prefer to snap selfies on their phone instead.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Adults, though, will love this throwback Liangxiang Wooden Mini Camera Toy. It’s great as a cute photo prop or a thoughtful addition to any room’s decor to remind of the good old days.
Liangxiang Wooden Mini Camera Toy, $10.99 on Amazon

19. How does your garden grow?

HealthyWay
Amazon

Mini Explorer Light-Up Terrarium Kit, $24.99 on Amazon

20. Sorry, Girl Scouts. I make my own cookies now.

Now you can have girl scout cookies all year long with the Wicked Cool Toys Girl Scout Cookie Oven. Just like the Easy-Bake Oven of your childhood, you can watch your delicious cookies bake under the glow of some magical baking wizardry (or a 60-watt light bulb).

HealthyWay
Amazon

We do still recommend supporting Girl Scout cookie sales though—there’s still no substitute for a fresh box of thin mints.
Wicked Cool Toys Girl Scout Cookie Oven, $39.99 on Amazon

21. Pass the pigs, please.

Never heard of Pass the Pigs? Allow us to introduce you to this hilarious, easy-to-play game in which miniature pigs take the place of dice in a livestock-inspired version of Yahtzee.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Players earn points for moves like the Oinker or the Pig-Out and keep score on the included score pad. It’s an ideal travel game, thanks to the game’s compact size, making anytime a good time to Pass the Pigs.
Pass the Pigs, $9.97 on Amazon

22. Like a Nerf toy, but so much better.

Getting pelted with foam arrows is totally fun, but you know what’s even better? Getting pelted by edible marshmallows with this marshmallow shooter from Marshmallow Fun Company.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This dart-style marshmallow shooter features a soft mouth guard that prevents you from inhaling marshmallows, and it’s even dishwasher safe.
Marshmallow Straight Shooter, $8.99 on Amazon

23. Ride through the airport in style.

Ok, so you might get some odd looks in the airport if you’re seen scooting around on a Trunki Original Ride-On Suitcase.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Even though you’ll still have to walk to your gate, this cute kids suitcase is made of durable plastic, can fit in an overhead bin, and can definitely be spotted at baggage claim. We’d say that makes it an ideal piece of luggage for both the young and the young at heart.
Trunki Original Ride-On Suitcase, $49.95 on Amazon

24. Play chess with your favorite video game hero.

Mario is beloved by both today’s kids and ’90s-era grown-ups whose first video game experience was playing Mario on the original Nintendo system.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Exercise your brain and revisit all your old favorites including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi with USAopoly Super Mario Chess, which features hand-painted pieces. Just watch out for Bowser—he’s still just as hard to beat!
USAopoly Super Mario Chess, $26.83 on Amazon

25. Who doesn’t love bathroom humor?

For whatever reason, kids loooooove poop jokes, which is why they love the LOOPY Fishin’ for Floaters Bath Game, in which, you guessed it, kids fish for fake poop in their bath water.

HealthyWay
Amazon

But, we have to admit, this game is pretty funny, and it beats fishing real poo out of the bath (moms, you know what we’re talking about).
LOOPY Fishin’ for Floaters Bath Game, $14.99 on Amazon

26. This toy won’t break the bank.

Have a fresh piece of gum anytime with the Carousel Medium Gumball Bank. Its compact size (right at 12 inches) is perfect for keeping near your desk when you need a fresh piece of gum; if you’re industrious, you might even start a side hustle selling gum to coworkers.

HealthyWay

36. Kids aren’t the only ones who can have a ball (pit).

There is nothing more fun than diving head first into a plastic ball pit and rolling around like Scrooge McDuck on a pile of gold coins. Alas, most ball pits are pint-sized, meaning adults can’t get in on the fun. You can, however, get creative and make your own ball pit with a couple sets of Click N’ Play Value Pack of 400 Hundred Crush Proof Plastic Balls and an inexpensive inflatable swimming pool.

40 Kids' Toys And Games Adults Will Not-So-Secretly Love

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PKNO7LK”]Bentgo Bento-Style Lunch Box, $27.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072SSPRRG”]Songsongbear Cosplay Costume Pajamas, from $19.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Family-Games-Bowling-Inflatable-Toys/dp/B074RMZ15M”]Perfect Life Ideas Inflatable Bowling Set, from $19.98 on Amazon[/link-button]

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002B8VL3E”]Haywire Group Flickin’ Chicken, $19.77 on Amazon[/link-button]

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0722M6MVF”]Elfeland Children’s Night Light, from $15.89 on Amazon[/link-button]

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M5GJFQ1″]Tinkering Labs Stem Kit, $59 on Amazon[/link-button]

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ADVKRRM”]Snowtime Anytime Indoor Snowball Fight, $39.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V2HF15″]Wiscky 3D Dinosaur Lamp, $16.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

12. Bring back the ’90s with this throwback gem.

Every middle-school-aged girl wanted for Christmas in 1994 was a Polly Pocket compact. Like most kids in the ’90s, we lived for Polly Pocket and her pint-sized friends and accessories.

[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J68ZBWY”]Wild Republic Hanging Three Toed Sloth Plush, $19.99 on Amazon[/link-button]

HealthyWay
Amazon

24 Children’s Toys That Fit Their Personalities To A T

Buying presents for kids shouldn’t be nearly as hard as it is. They’re kids! They love toys! That’s what makes being a kid so much fun.
But if you’re a parent, godparent, auntie, uncle, grandparent, or really just anyone who has ever bought a present for a kid only to ask them what they think of it about a week later, you know all too well the frustration of spending countless hours (and plenty of cash) trying to make that special kid in your life happy, only to see it all go to waste.
So do you give up? Of course not.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/asiseeit

The secret to finding the right toy for the kid who tells the best knock-knock jokes in the neighborhood isn’t really that hard to figure out. It comes down to personality.
Don’t believe us?
Take a look at these toys that are tailor-made for kids based on their interests—with a healthy dose of science to back up the benefits of fostering your favorite kid’s love of athletics, music, art, and more.

For the Growing Athlete

They haven’t seen a ball they weren’t itching to kick, and they’ve been running since the moment they got up on two feet.
The studies show that activity is good for kids, but it’s even better if they learn to love playing different types of sports, in part because they’re more likely to stick with exercise as they grow up. Fuel their passion for sports with toys that offer them a variety of options, from biking to stomping to everything in between.

1. Go extreme.

They may not be X-Games ready, but their toy box will be.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Not only does their Playmobil figure come with a skateboard, mountain bike, and rollerblades for some seriously adventurous pretend play, but the set is packed in a carrying case for fun on the go.

2. Put a lid on it.

Is a bike helmet a toy or a toy accessory? It turns out it can be both! This kid-sized helmet will keep their noggins safe while they’re rolling around the block on their favorite wheels.

HealthyWay
Amazon

When they get home, they can settle on the couch with a set of markers and re-decorate, because this helmet doubles as a dry erase board!

3. Get in the swing of things.

It swings. It spins. And it lets them do both at the same time, plus the super spinner swing is rated for 200+ pounds, so little kids can invite a friend (or two) along for the ride!

HealthyWay
Amazon

The only disadvantage to this rad swing, which can be hung from most trees, is it will be that much harder to get them come inside after playtime. But at least you’ll know exactly where they are in the yard!

4. Bounce around.

Save money—and a trip to the local playland—with a blow-up bounce center they can use any time they’re feeling like Tigger.

Made for kids from age 3 to 6, this play gym can also be filled with toy balls for an at-home ball pit adventure.

5. Add a few steps.

Romper Stompers were a big hit a few decades ago, but this generation has their own version, and they’re a whole lot more fun.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Enter the bucket stilt that helps kids pretend they’ve got giant monster feet! The neon green “feet” can support kids up to 110 pounds as they practice balance and get a chance to learn what life is like when you’re just a little bit taller.

For the Next Steve Jobs

They’re always tinkering, and they figured out how to make Siri do their bidding by the time they were 2. What could possibly keep your future engineer engaged for more than five minutes? Play!
The science is solid on this one: The more time kids spend playing when they’re young, the bigger brain boost they’re getting. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley have found that all that time kids spend pretending helps them develop cognitive skills that they can use as they grow up…and turn all that tinkering into a possible career.
From bath time to slime time, here are a few STEM toys to give your little scientist a serious boost in brain power.

6. Rain on the parade.

Bath time is playtime when you’re a kid, but it can be learning time too.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Give your future meteorologist some weather fun. Fill the cloud with water, and you can make it rain…or stop the rain showers with your finger. Introducing little ones to the cycle of water may not inspire weather person dreams, but it should help them get a handle on water conservation.

7. Head down to Main Street.

Architectural design and structural engineering meet kids right where they are with Wonderhood, a toy brand that pairs every toy set with an activity journal that serves up design and building challenges for kids to solve.

8. Let them rule the room.

Designed for elementary schoolers, this kit gives kids the tools they need to build some high-tech inventions to keep pesky little brothers and sisters far away from their stuff.

HealthyWay
Amazon

While they’re developing STEM skills, they’re also inventing ways to guard their piggy banks and that super secret diary.

9. Get in gear.

Head back to the bathroom and cue the lesson in hydroelectricity. The pipes in this toy can be used together or separately, with mechanisms that will do all sorts of gymnastics when the water flows through them, showing off the secrets behind the energy produced by water.

HealthyWay

The spinning gears suction to bathroom walls, so there’s no need to worry about things spinning out of control (and a deluge in your bathroom!).

10. It’s slime time.

Psssst, come closer. Don’t let the kids hear, but making slime isn’t just fun. It can be an educational scientific adventure too.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This kit lets kids in on the secret of making their slime glow in the dark and other cool slimy facts, thanks to a National Geographic educational packet that guides them through the process.

For the Animal-Lover

Pets can help kids feel less stressed, help them develop empathy, and even help their health. Of course, if you’ve got a kid who loves animals, you know their bedroom would be a zoo if you’d let them have their way. But there are only so many animals you can adopt.
Good thing you can indulge your future veterinarian’s love of all things furry and feathered with some new toys that might ward off the begging for yet another kitty or puppy (or bird or lizard!), at least for a little while.

11. Build a friend.

Tiny hands will make quick work out of turning these block sets into a cat, dog, and baby bird. Combining a basic engineering education with creations that make for fun imaginative play, this animal DUPLO set comes with small “food” blocks so your little one can practice feeding their “pets.”

HealthyWay
Amazon

The blocks work with other DUPLOs as well, so they can integrate their animals into other play.

12. Clean things up.

Bath time is a lot more fun with an animal friend. This little dolphin is awfully hungry, and it’s your kiddo’s job to feed them their favorite treat…soap! (Not to mention the little critter doubles as a bath time friend and a sponge to get them squeaky clean.)

HealthyWay
Amazon

Packed with a bath book, the gift set gives kids an excuse to hang out in the tub and get good and soapy.

13. Give them their wings.

Butterflies offer kids a fascinating look at how some animals develop—from little caterpillar to cocoon to beautiful butterfly.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Give them a taste of what it’s like to go through their own metamorphosis with these printed butterfly wings with tie-on straps. Glitter, paint, and more are packaged in the kit, so they can decorate their wings their way. Then you strap them on (they’re sized to fit kids 3 and up) and let them “fly.”

14. Let them wash the dog.

Er, let’s clear this up right away. Your bathroom will be safe from suds even after the kids get done cleaning behind Fido’s ears…at least if Fido is the dog in the Soggy Doggy board game.

HealthyWay
Amazon

A mini shower and a mini dog that actually shakes like the real thing makes for plenty of good, old-fashioned—dare we say clean?—fun for kids age 4 and up.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Spin-Master-Soggy-Doggy-Interactive/dp/B01MUCC6K3″]Spin Master Soggy Doggy Board Game, $14.79 at Amazon [/link-button]

15. Bring out the blocks.

Toddlers can take off on an adventure under the sea without ever leaving their playroom, thanks to this wooden block set. Handcrafted in the United States and printed using non-toxic, mouth-safe inks, each block features a letter of the alphabet and a close-up of a sea creature with a name that begins with the corresponding letter.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They’ll learn building skills, improve their fine motor skills, and brush up on all the critters they could find if they were diving in the ocean. Best of all, they (and you) can stay dry the whole time!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B417SMR”]Uncle Goose Ocean Blocks, $24.00 at Amazon[/link-button]

For the Budding Artist

So, their finger paintings scream Frida Kahlo, and when you clean out their pockets before you throw those tiny jeans in the washing machine, their collections are worthy of a MOMA exhibit.
Art has been shown to help kids with everything from developing better social skills to learning to regulate their own emotions. And of course there are fine motor skills, math basics, and even language being developed while they scribble and doodle.
It’s time to foster the artist within.

16. Bring on the action.

Remember Fashion Plates? They’re baaaaack, but there’s a twist!

HealthyWay
Amazon

Kids can illustrate their own comic books with the help of Action Plates, the drawing playset that gives them the tools it takes to create their own superheroes.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Kahootz-Action-Plates-Drawing-Playset/dp/B00Z0P85IY”]Kahootz Action Plates Drawing Playset, $18.99 at Amazon [/link-button]

17. Open the can.

And open up their adventures! A can full of craft supplies, from air-dry clay to google eyes, feathers, pipe cleaners, felt, pom poms, popsicle sticks, scissors, and more lets your little artist loose to find themselves.

HealthyWay
Amazon

With more than 100 craft components, this can of fun lets them create whatever it is they want to create. No rules, only their imagination ruling the day.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Creativity-Kids-Big-Can-Components/dp/B00GGTWYD0″]The Big Creativity Can, $14.50 at Amazon[/link-button]

18. Roll out the fun.

A fresh sheet of paper is like a new day: There are no mistakes yet! Grab their crayons, markers, or paints, and roll out a pristine white piece of paper for them to begin their adventures.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The roller can be re-loaded with fresh paper rolls so they’ll never run out of canvas for their masterpieces. You can rip off a sheet when they’re done or allow the kids to color the entire long stretch of bond paper, then mount the dispenser on the wall and load a colorful, decorated roll for some homemade wall art.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Wooden-Tabletop-Dispenser/dp/B0094RGCOS”]Melissa & Doug Paper Roll Dispenser, $16.99 at Amazon[/link-button]

19. Make mealtime playtime.

Whether they’re out to eat with the family or sitting around the dining room table waiting for dinner to come out of the oven, color-your-own placemats give little artists space to doodle and dream.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Designed to be washed and re-used, these placemats can be stowed in the car for on-the-go eating or slipped in the cabinet for at-home use.

20. String it up.

Unicorns may not be real, but there’s plenty of magic in creativity, and making their own unicorn out of string art will work kids’ concentration and motor skills. Not to mention they get a pretty darn cool piece of art to hang on their walls when they’re done.

HealthyWay

For the Mini Musician

Quick! What’s your favorite child’s favorite song? Most kids have one, even if it’s one they made up themselves. (And honestly, those are often the best!)
The more kids are exposed to music the better, scientists say. It helps with their auditory processing, helps them develop their brains, and a whole lot more. So why wouldn’t you indulge that love at playtime?

21. Snap to it.

It’s Memory for musical kids! The faces of these cards feature musical notes, putting players’ memories to the test along with their recognition of their music.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Designed for kids age 7 and up, it can be played alone or with a friend, making it a perfect game for only children or kids who are on the go.

Back To School Supplies That Are A Waste Of Money (And What To Buy Instead)

Back to school season is here and it won’t be long before backpacks and homework folders are filling your entryway. Before you can fall back into your school year routine, you’ve got to do your back to school shopping. For many, that’s a huge expense.
Although the cost of school supplies has dropped a bit, most parents can expect to spend the same amount on preparing a single kid for their first day of school as they would on a single mortgage payment, according to the 2018 Backpack Index by Huntington Bank.
For kids in elementary school, the average cost of school supplies is $637. For middle school students, stocking up on binders, pencil, and paper is probably going to cost around $941, and for high schoolers $1,355. Kind of wild, right? Now imagine you’ve got not one, but three or four kids to send back to school fully stocked with clothing and supplies. For many, it simply isn’t realistic. It costs too much!

HealthyWay

So, should you just bite the bullet, swipe your credit card, and worry about the bill later? Maybe not. As it turns out, parents might be spending on school supplies that never get used, or they might be spending too much on what their kids really need. Check out these school supplies that are a total waste of money—and our suggestions for what you can buy instead.

What Not to Wear

Shopping for school clothing is by far the biggest expense parents face as they get their kids ready for the new school year. One report, compiled by the National Retail Federation, estimates that parents are spending an average of $236.90 on school clothes per child.
One example of overspending is buying school uniforms through the school sponsored retailer, at a specialty uniform store, or even a high-end retailer. These high-cost uniforms quickly add up when you’re trying to purchase enough items for a full week of school. Take Land’s End, for instance, a popular retailer of school uniforms. Polo shirts cost as much as $35.50 each and khakis as much as $45.50.
The good news is that this expense can be lessened by buying the right things from the right retailers. These uniform options still meet most school guidelines and won’t totally deplete your back-to-school budget.

An Essential Item for a Girl’s Uniform

Many schools include solid jumpers among their approved uniform options. It’s a good basic that can often be worn multiple times without a wash.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This Girls’ Uniform Jumper from the Amazon Essentials brand is available in both navy and khaki, ships through Prime, and only costs $14. Perfect for the hustle and bustle of the school day, all of the uniform options from Amazon Essentials are made with fabric that has a slight stretch.

Plus, with free shipping, this is the likely the easiest back-to-school shopping you’ve ever done.

Backpacks, and Lunch Bags, and Pouches, Oh My!

There’s no getting around the fact that kids need a sturdy bag to carry around their books all day long. Spending an arm and a leg on a backpack doesn’t have to be the norm. Many parents purchase a completely new set at the start of the year, including a new backpack, a new gym bag, lunch bags, and a litany of pouches for pencils, markers, and more.
Don’t purchase what you can reuse. If your kids’ bags are still in great shape from last year, say no to the pressure of buying shiny and new. This is especially true for things like pouches and lunch bags, which don’t see as much wear and tear as backpacks.
If you do need to replace last year’s stash, pay attention to the price. At Pottery Barn, the backpacks cost as much as $59.95, and a basic backpack from L.L. Bean costs around $40. Instead of shopping with a big brand, check out these affordable (but high quality) options we found on Amazon.

A Small, Floral Backpack

For younger kids, a standard backpack isn’t often unnecessary and weighs them down. This High Sierra Mini Loop Backpack is not only on the small side, it’s also an incredibly affordable option that quickly ships through Amazon Prime.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Multiple compartments help students stay organized and padded shoulder straps allow for comfortable, all-day wear. This same sized backpack is also available in light blue, navy and lime, and lilac and lavender.

A Printed Pouch for Staying Organized

While we can’t promise that this pouch will help you avoid cleaning out your kiddo’s backpack once a week, it might help them keep track of small items so you’re not constantly repurchasing essentials like pencils, erasers, and colored pencils.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These Floral Canvas Pencil Pouches come in a four pack and only cost $9.96, so you know you’re getting the most bang for your buck. Each pack has two zipper pouches, allowing for optimal organization of different items.

Stock up on the little stuff.

One of the most surprising expenses parents face at the start of a new school year is the cost of stocking up on the little, inexpensive supplies. A few dollars here and there for crayons, pencils, and glue might not seem like a big deal in the aisle, but you’ll watch your total quickly add up in the checkout line thanks to big differences in price between name-brand and store-brand options.
Even more shocking, perhaps, is that fact that Amazon isn’t the best place to stock up on the little stuff. While we found a ton of great deals on backpacks and uniforms, many of the small school supplies were more than twice the price of buying them from various brick-and-mortar stores. Save $.50 or more on each of these school supplies by buying from the right supplier (and selecting the most cost-effective brand).

This off-brand option is half the cost.

Most lower-grade students are expected to show up to school with crayons. Although this school supply isn’t typically considered a huge expense, it’s a good idea to save money whenever possible! While on-brand crayons get a lot of praise, these Target-brand crayons have pretty great reviews and they’re half the price.

HealthyWay
Target

Buy a 24 pack of Crayola for $.50 or the same set of colors from Up & Up for $.25. A penny saved is a penny earned, right?

Another Brand Swap Out That Will Save You Big

Okay, so a few bucks isn’t going to make or break your back-to-school budget, but it will buy you a latte on your kids’ first day. No. 2 Pencils are the school supply you absolutely can’t send your kid to school without, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot.

HealthyWay
Target

Do another brand swap and reach for the Up & Up 24 Count #2 Pencils instead of the Ticonderoga Brand, which cost $4.49 for a pack. The Target-brand option isn’t just a fourth of the cost, they also have better reviews online. Talk about a win-win!
[link-button href=”http://shopstyle.it/l/QTJ8″]Up & Up 24 Count #2 Wood Pencils, $1.19 from Target[/link-button]

Don’t overspend on tissues.

Is it just us, or do classrooms go through a bizarre amount of tissues each year? Help your kids’ teachers prep for head cold season without overspending on tissues this year. Your school might recommend Kleenex-brand tissues, especially if they’ve partnered with Target on School List Assist.

HealthyWay
Target

Opt for the Up & Up brand instead and save over a dollar on a 640-count pack of tissues. While the Kleenex brand costs $5.99, the store brand costs just $4.49.

Avoiding the Electronics Trap

If you want to save major money on your school supply shopping, be sure you’re paying close attention to what you’re spending on electronics this year. These are the items that really add up! They’re also the school supplies you can probably get away with saying no to—or at least avoiding the pressure of buying the newest model.

Opt to go against the status quo with this phone.

If your little student isn’t asking for a cell phone yet, they probably will be after school starts. More and more parents are sending their young kids to school with a cell phone, but you shouldn’t feel afraid of going against the status quo.
We don’t have to tell you how quickly the cost of a smartphone can add up. A new iPhone can set you back up to a $1,000 and comes with monthly expenses to pay for minutes and data usage. There is also a good argument to be made that giving kids a smartphone to take to school isn’t a great idea, even if they’re in middle school. Wait Until 8th is an organization that advocates for delaying giving kids smartphones for as long as possible, ideally until they’ve reached eighth grade.

HealthyWay
Target

If you need your child to have a phone so they can reach you during after-school activities or while they’re hanging out with friends, there are better options. The Consumer Cellular Alcatel Go Flip is your basic flip phone, free from distracting apps or the expensive data costs. Load it with your child’s’ regularly called numbers and send them to school without worries about how much time they’ll be spending online.
[link-button href=”http://shopstyle.it/l/QTJL”]Consumer Cellular Alcatel Go Flip, $29.99 from Target[/link-button]

Same Brand, Better Price

One item we noticed on school supply shopping lists this year that could easily because a big expense were earbuds with a mic. Skullcandy earbuds seem to be a popular recommendation and they’ve got pretty great reviews, so that makes sense to us. One important thing to know about Skullcandy is that their earbuds can be pretty affordable if you know what you’re looking for.

HealthyWay
Amazon

While the Amazon’s Choice recommendation from Skullcandy is a set of sweat resistant, lightweight earbuds designed with running in mind, these $29.99 earbuds probably aren’t what your child needs for school. Instead, opt for their more affordable option — Skullcandy Ink’d. This set only costs $9.77 and still includes the mic and volume control your child will need for school.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Microphone-Tangle-Reducing-Noise-Isolating-Precision/dp/B007136EDG/”]Skullcandy Ink’d 2.0, $9.77 from Amazon[/link-button]

Which Extras to Skip

Your school’s supply list won’t dictate all of your back-to-school purchases. Certain kids will have needs outside of what’s listed by their teacher, and that’s okay. Whether it’s clothes for sports or those sparkle gel pens they feel they simply can’t do without, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on the last-minute extras. Skip some of these items when possible and make sure you’re shopping smarter for the items you decide to keep on your list.

Fancy Writing Utensils Your Allowance Earner Can Afford

When it comes to buying extras or novelty items before school, a lot of parents opt for asking their kids to cover the cost, and we think that’s really smart. If there is a trendy pen, trapper keeper, or bag your child wants, help them find an option they can afford to pay for with their allowance or birthday money.

HealthyWay
Amazon

One school supply that can easily add up is fancy writing utensils like gel pens and mechanical pencils. The Colorful Gel Pen from NYKKOLA comes in a pack of 12 pastel colors and they’re much more affordable than other, name-brand options.

Novelty Paper Without the Novelty Cost

Whether you’ve got a type-A student who loves to keep their life on track with a planner or a little Hemingway who swears they need a fancy journal at the start of each year, you’ve probably already noticed that novelty journals and planners get pricey very quickly.

If your child decides to purchases these items for themselves, guide them to an affordable option like the 2018–2019 Student Planner by Creative Notebooks or the 5 Pack of Brightly Color Field Books from Elan Publishing Companies.

Nursery Needs

1. A smart baby monitor

The baby monitor: a first-time parents’ BFF if there ever was one. For most of us, a baby monitor offers unparalleled peace of mind during that first year of baby’s life and beyond. That’s why we were so excited to discover Nanit—by far the smartest baby monitor we’ve ever used.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This high-tech monitor, chock full of awesome features like a crystal clear HD camera, background audio, sleep tracking, night vision, motion sensors, easy wall mount, and so much more, is everything we could ever want in a baby monitor. It syncs right to your phone, and despite its multitude of features, is super easy to use. And while we realize it’s a bit of a splurge, we can’t count the number of more inexpensive monitors that have pooped out on us over the years. We couldn’t love this one more and believe it’s worth every penny.

2. A mess saver

You haven’t officially joined the motherhood club until you’ve fumbled around changing wet crib sheets in the dark at 3 a.m. While we can’t promise you less mess, we can promise you less cleanup time with this organic cotton waterproof crib mattress.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This breathable, organic cotton cover will protect your crib mattress from overnight leaks, drooly babies, and the always dreadful middle-of-the-night throw-up. We love that it’s made from super soft materials so it won’t crinkle when baby moves around. We also love that it’s easy to throw in the washer (and dryer) after an accident.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001KZH69C”]Get it on Amazon for $20.49[/link-button]

3. A jack of all trades

If you’re going to stock up on one baby item for your nursery and beyond (other than diapers, of course!) make it muslin swaddle blankets. These breathable, ultra-soft blankets are truly the jack of all trades when it comes to baby gear. They’re great for keeping your little one warm, of course, but also as a swaddle, a place for tummy time or a diaper change, a sunshade, a nursing cover, and so much more.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These Aden + Anais classics are some of our all-time favorites. We love all the adorable patterns, the ridiculously soft 100 percent cotton muslin fabric, and how they hold up after what seems like hundreds of runs through the washing machine.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/aden-anais-Classic-Swaddle-Elephant/dp/B002SW3B0O”]Get it on Amazon for $39.91[/link-button]

4. An easy-to-clean changer

As you’re soon to find out, diaper changes can be messy. There’s not only a dirty baby to deal with, but there’s the other (even less-pleasant) matter of where all of that “mess” ends up.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Enter the Keekaroo Peanut Changer: an innovative baby product if there ever was one. This soft, cushy material is impenetrable to fluids, making it super easy to clean and stopping mold and bacteria from latching on. Unlike other more traditional changing pads, this one doesn’t require any covers, pads or extra fabric, which means less clean-up for you. And it sticks to any hard surfaces (like a dresser), eliminating the need for a changing table. Love!

5. A high-tech sleep solution

Although some baby tech can feel needlessly confusing and overwhelming, there are a few rare instances where infant product innovators seem to get it just right. That’s definitely the case with the Hatch Baby Rest.

HealthyWay
Amazon

A nightlight, sound machine, and okay-to-wake clock all rolled into one, the Rest is proven to promote healthy sleep habits and to provide light colors that encourage natural circadian rhythms. (Translation: This little gem is going to get your baby to sleep better and longer. Yes, please.) It’s fully customizable and programmable and can be controlled from your smartphone. It’s smart tech that actually works, and we are so on board.

Nursery Wants

6. A comfy spot for snuggles

A glider is by no means a must-have in a baby’s nursery, but if you do have the space, we strongly encourage you to register for one. Gliders are the perfect place for bedtime stories, those middle of the night feeds, and skin-to-skin cuddles.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This sleek, modern upholstered glider and ottoman from DaVinci is neutral enough to fit seamlessly into any nursery decor and comfortable enough for any parent. It features forward and backward gliding as well as a 360-degree swivel feature, and has a high back for added support.

7. An organic, breathable crib mattress

If an organic crib mattress is important to you, look no further than the Nook Pebble Pure. This 100 percent organic sleep system is also 100 percent sleek, modern and, most importantly, completely breathable. Made from materials like eucalyptus, cotton, coconut, and wood, it’s about as natural as you’re going to get when it comes to your baby’s crib.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Nook comes with a waterproof and stainproof washable cover, so you won’t need to buy any extra crib sheets or mattress protectors.

8. A stink-stopping diaper pail

Having a dedicated place for dirty diapers certainly isn’t a nursery must-have, but if you designate one, you want to make sure that whatever you’re using does a great job of containing all of those less-than-pleasant aromas that babies can manage to produce.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail is an odor-containing champ. Because it’s made from steel, not porous plastic like many other pails, and it locks odors in within its walls. It also features a rubber seal around the rim, further helping to keep the sink inside. But best of all? It uses regular tall kitchen trash bags, not special (and expensive) custom liners, so you’ll definitely be saving money in the long run.

Apparel Needs

9. A wear-anywhere organic footie

It’s so easy to be fooled into thinking babies need a ton of clothes (we know, we get it—teeny tiny clothes are the absolutely cutest), but the reality is little ones really don’t need much at all, especially during those first few months.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The simple footie is a baby basic worth investing in. We love this organic cotton option from L’ovedbaby, both for its muted, gender-neutral design and its functionality. Fold-over mitten cuffs, attached feet, super-soft, certified-organic fabric, and an easy-snap front make this one of our newborn outfit go-tos.

10. A versatile baby basic

There are certain baby basics that you just can’t ever have enough of, and the Gerber Unisex Onesie is one of them.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These versatile white snap-bottom onesies are perfect for the first year and beyond. They’re great for adding an extra layer on cold days or for wearing on their own. We love the expandable neckline for easy dressing, and of course the amazingly affordable price point. And with this multi-sized pack, you’ll be covered for baby’s entire first year.

Apparel Wants

11. Soft, warm booties—that actually stay on

While baby booties are certainly not a need, if you live in a colder climate, you’re going to have to keep baby’s toes warm when you venture outdoors. One of the biggest problems with lots of booties, though? They fall off constantly.

HealthyWay
Amazon

If you don’t want to spend your day picking teeny, tiny socks up off the floor, you need to add the Zutano Booties to your registry sooner rather than later. Not only are these fleece booties super warm and cozy, but the shape and two-snap closure helps them stay put on baby’s feet. Style and function for the win!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Zutano-Cozie-Bootie-Heather-Gray/dp/B01JZQV4X6″]Get it on Amazon for $8.14[/link-button]

12. A swaddle for self-soothing

There are few things cuter than a tiny baby burrito. While it’s totally doable to swaddle with muslin blankets, some parents—and some babies—prefer the ease of a more straightforward swaddling method.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Love to Dream Swaddle UP is a swaddle hybrid that gives babies all the benefits of feeling safe and secure while also allowing them to move their arms up to self-soothe. It’s super easy to use (legs and hands in, zip up, and go), and zips from the top and the bottom for easy nighttime diaper changes. And not to state the obvious here, but man, do babies look ridiculously cute in this thing!

Feeding Needs

13. A bottle that mimics the breast

Whether you decide to give your little one breastmilk or formula, most moms decide to bottle feed their babes at some point during their feeding journey. There are so many bottles on the market, and choosing the right one for you is often a matter of trial and error, but we think the Comotomo Natural Feel Bottle is a great place to start.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This soft, wide-necked bottle most naturally mimics the breast in both shape and feel. Made from silicone, it’s microwave and dishwasher safe and features dual anti-colic vents to keep milk in and air out. It’s also one of the easiest-to-clean bottles we’ve ever used.
(Pro tip: we don’t recommend putting a huge collection of bottles on your registry. Choose one or two to start, then see what baby likes and go from there.)
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Comotomo-Natural-Bottle-Green-Ounces/dp/B004C053AQ”]Get it on Amazon for $13.37[/link-button]

14. A thoughtfully designed bottle brush

Now that your baby is taking a bottle, you’re going to need a way to clean them. Even wide neck bottles, though easier than their narrow counterparts, tend to easily trap sticky milk and formula.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The OXO Tot Bottle Brush is our go-to for all of our bottle cleaning needs. We love its modern and functional design and its flexible neck. The silicone nipple cleaner is ideal for tiny spaces, and the included stand will keep your counters dry. It’s also dishwasher safe for when it starts smelling a bit funky.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Bottle-Brush-Nipple-Cleaner/dp/B0771RG4VH”]Get it on Amazon for $6.99[/link-button]

15. An all-natural soother

The jury’s out on when to introduce a pacifier to your little one, but when you do, we think choosing one made of natural rubber is the way to go.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Although there’s a bit of trial and error involved when it comes to figuring out which pacifier fits your baby best, we think the Hevea is a good place to start. We love the simple design and the retro feel (can anyone say Insta-worthy photo opp?), as well as the cute patterned cut-outs.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004GVFRM0″]Get it on Amazon for $9[/link-button]

16. A burp cloth and bib all in one

Fun fact: Babies spit up. A lot. And if you don’t want to ruin every shirt you own, you’ll want to add some burp cloths to your registry ASAP.

HealthyWay
Amazon

We love the look and the versatile functionality of these Aden + Anais Burpy Bibs. Made from 100 percent cotton muslin, they’re insanely absorbent and do a fantastic job soaking up all that drool and spit up. They not only fit perfectly over your shoulder, but they also feature a unique shape and back snap that allows them to drape over baby’s shoulders and be transformed into a full-coverage bib.

Feeding Wants

17. A modern drying rack must-have

A dedicated spot on your counter for drying all things baby definitely isn’t a need, but it sure is nice if you have the counter space for it. This insanely functional modern drying rack is by far our favorite choice for so many great reasons.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Boon Lawn not only looks cool on your counter, but its flexible “grass” design does a stellar job of holding all of your freshly washed baby gear in place, meaning bottles, nipples, sippy cups, pump parts, and more will have their own spot. It also comes with the most fun accessories like twigs and stems to hold all of those itty bitty pieces that might otherwise never be seen again.

18. A high chair that will last for years

Adding a high chair to your registry may not be top on your list, but before you know it, your little one will be diving into the world of solids—and you’ll want to be prepared.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The OXO Tot Sprout High Chair has a simple, clean design that won’t create an eyesore in your kitchen. It’s pretty great when it comes to functionality, too. Suitable for kids 6 months to 5 years, it’s fully adjustable and easily converts from a traditional high chair to a regular seat that can be pulled right up to the table, giving your little one a safe place to sit for years. It’s easy to wipe down, and the recessed tray can hold over 7 ounces of spilled liquids. (Trust us, this fact will be very important to you sometime soon.)

19. A baby whisperer

One of the most beloved baby products of all time, the Fisher-Price Rock ’n Play is a registry item that you’ll be thankful for every single day during the first few months of your babe’s life  Sleeper, lounger, and rocker all in one, the Rock ’n Play is an absolute lifesaver for fussy babies. 20. An easy way to travel light

When you’re hitting the road with your little one, a safe, secure infant car seat is an absolute necessity. And if you’re a suburban mama who’s going to be in and out of the car a lot, you’ll also want to keep in mind the seat’s weight, as you’ll be lifting it quite a bit.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Graco SnugRide is one of our favorite infant car seats for its combination of safety, affordability, and weight. Clocking in at only 7.5 pounds, this rear-facing seat is suitable for little ones from 4 to 35 pounds and up to 32”. It’s simple to install using the LATCH system and features one-click technology that attaches it easily to any other products within the Graco travel family.

21. A hands-free way to keep baby close

There’s nothing quite like newborn snuggles. Especially during those first few months, little ones love to be held super close, especially when they’re tired or cranky. But as you’ll soon learn, carrying around 8+ pounds of baby day in and day out can quickly start feeling like a neverending Pilates class.

HealthyWay

Give yourself a break and free up your hands by adding the comfortable, breathable Ergobaby Cool Air 360 to your registry. Constructed from lightweight mesh, this carrier will keep your little one—and you—cool all year long. The wide waistband and padded shoulder straps provide excellent support and it doesn’t take a PhD to figure out how to get it on and off. Best of all? 22. The ultimate ride

A stroller that fits your needs and your lifestyle is probably one of the biggest and most important decisions you’re going to make as you build your registry. Although we definitely recommend that you think long and hard about how you’ll be using this important piece of baby gear (are you a city mom or a suburban family, will you be in and out of the car a lot, etc.) we think the best, most functional stroller for most families is the UPPABaby Cruz.

HealthyWay
Amazon

There are so many things we love about this (beautiful) stroller, it’s tough to pick just one. Its compact design means that it’s easy to fold and carry—but that definitely doesn’t take away from any other amazing features. It’s comfy for baby and has a great canopy and adjustable handlebar, features a roomy basket underneath, fully reclines, and can be forward or rear facing. (It’s also compatible with a bassinet and car seats from lots of different manufacturers.)

23. A safe place for baby to play

Once your little one starts sitting up—and especially once she starts crawling—you’re going to need somewhere to contain her when you get tired of chasing her around the house. Play yards are a safe, secure spot for baby to play and rest, and a must-have on your registry.

HealthyWay
Amazon

We’re huge fans of the Joovy Room2 Playard for a few key reasons. We love how roomy it is—almost 50 percent larger than most traditional play yards—meaning your little one won’t grow out of it anytime soon. We also love the insanely easy setup, the and the two wheels that make it easy to move from room to room. It even comes with a cotton mattress sheet, so you won’t have to worry about buying one separately.

Gear Wants

24. A carrier with the perfect fit

Some mamas (and babes) will take to babywearing right away, so if you think you and your little one will fit the bill, it’s wise to add a wrap-style carrier to your registry. Unlike more structured carriers, wraps are just what they sound like—a long piece of soft, stretchy fabric that wraps around you and baby, keeping her close and comfortable.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Though some wraps can be confusing and frustrating to put on, the Boba Baby Wrap is one of the simpler ones we’ve tried and can be mastered after just a few attempts. It supports up to 35 pounds and is made from a cotton/spandex blend, giving it just the right amount of stretch and support.

25. A newborn docking station

The DockATot has taken the baby world by storm over the past few years. Some mamas don’t buy into the hype, but lots of others swear up and down by this baby lounger and can’t imagine momlife without one.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The DockATot is perfect for lounging, play, tummy time, and supervised sleep. Babies love the high, soft walls that surround the dock, giving them the snug feeling of being back in the womb while still enabling them to move freely without any straps or buckles. And mamas love the ease of portability, the washable materials, and the swoon-worthy designs.

26. An ergonomic bouncer

Adding a bouncer to your registry isn’t a necessity, but we definitely love the convenience (and fun) it provides, so it may be something you want to think about as you build your wish list.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The BabyBjorn Bouncer is simple, thoughtfully designed, and beautiful. The ergonomic design gently supports baby from day one, with no batteries, motors, or bells and whistles required—it’s baby’s own movements that power this chair! There are three different reclining positions, and the bouncer folds completely flat for easy travel. (It’s one of our favorite on-the-go baby items since it’s so simple to fold down and pop in a trunk or even a suitcase.) It even transitions into a toddler seat once baby gets a bit older.

27. A soft (and stylish) place to play

If you’re looking to cut down on the amount of baby gear you’re going to fill your house with, then using a swaddle or a blanket as a play mat for baby will certainly get the job done. But if you think you’d like a more cushioned, dedicated space for baby to play, you may want to consider adding a play mat to your registry.

The best part about SkipHop’s DoublePlay Reversible Playmat is that it will actually look good in your living room, unlike so many other play mats we’ve come across. With one side featuring a modern print and one with a more kid-friendly pattern, it won’t stick out like a sore thumb in any part of your house. The PVC-free foam is perfect for playtime, and the mat is fully waterproof and wipes clean easily. It even rolls up for simple storage.

Bathtime, Health, and Safety Needs

28. An alternative (and adorable) baby bath

Before we took on this adventure of motherhood, we had no idea this baby product even existed—but we are so happy we learned about it!

HealthyWay

Bathing a teeny, tiny, squirmy, and very slippery newborn is not for the faint of heart. But the Blooming Bath Lotus changes all that! Now, instead of having to fumble with a slippery plastic infant tub, simply slip this soft, cushy liner into almost any sink and get scrubbin’. Baby will stay safe and secure, and you won’t have to worry about bending over at awkward angles while trying to get baby clean. Genius!

29. A registry must-have

A few of the items in this health and grooming collection probably would have made us cringe pre-baby. But now, we couldn’t love them more and realize that they are non-negotiable registry must-haves for any mama-to-be!

30. A smarter way to take baby’s temperature

Although it’s not fun to think about, the reality of having a baby or a toddler is that they get sick. A lot. And the last thing you want to do when your newest addition is fighting off her most recent round of germs, making her even more uncomfortable by poking her over and over with a thermometer.

Enter the Kinsa: the smarter, better way to take and track your little one’s temperature. Kinsa is a Bluetooth-enabled smart thermometer that wirelessly connects to your smartphone, allowing you to record and track your little one’s temp. Play Needs

32. A modern teether for sore gums

Even though you probably can’t imagine it now, before you know it your little one will be gnawing on everything in sight. To make sure their gum relief doesn’t come in the form of chewing on your finger, you’ll want to add a simple teether to your registry.

HealthyWay

We heart the Comotomo Silicone Teether for its straightforward design and of course its effectiveness in soothing tiny gums. It’s perfectly sized for little hands, making it easy for baby to maneuver it to wherever she needs the most gum relief. And since it’s made from 100 percent silicone, it’s easy to toss into the dishwasher to keep clean when it’s covered in baby drool!

33. A better, safer rattle

Babies are drawn to bright, primary colors—but they’re also drawn to putting anything and everything in their mouths. Once your baby starts to grasp and play, you’ll want to make sure that whatever she’s chewing on is natural and safe.

HABA’s Kringelring Wooden Rattle is one of our favorite first toys for little ones. Developing eyes love to look at the colorful beads around this pliable ring, and tiny hands love to grab and shake it. The ring is handcrafted from natural beechwood, so it’s totally fine to let your little one gnaw away.

37. A soothing way to relieve soreness

If you’re going to be a breastfeeding or pumping mama, one of the most common issues you may face, especially during the first few weeks of your baby’s life, is sore nipples. There are lots of creams available to soothe this painful problem, but we’ve found that most of them are super sticky and tough to apply. Not the case with Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This botanical-rich cream goes on smoothly and easily without any thick, sticky residue. It’s rich in naturally soothing organic ingredients like calendula, cocoa and shea butters, and olive oil, so you won’t have to worry when your baby gets some in her mouth. And it really works; a little goes a long way to providing incredible relief.
