Anyone who has kids can tell you that childbirth is no walk in the park. Whether you deliver naturally or by cesarean, the process—from the first contraction to your new baby’s first cries—can take a toll on any new mom. But just because it’s difficult, that doesn’t mean it has to be miserable.
There are certain techniques that can help moms-to-be manage their labor pains. An epidural may be the first thing that comes to mind for moms in labor, but there are additional ways for women to ease the discomfort of childbirth. Gearing your body up for the main event starts as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. From a healthy diet to getting the right amount of exercise, we’ve provided several strategies—straight from the experts—to help make sure your childbirth experience is memorable for all the right reasons.
Preparing Your Body
Moments after my son was born, one of the nurses turned to me and said, “Tomorrow, you are going to feel like you ran a marathon.” In all of my excitement, I brushed her comment off. I could tell my body was tired, and later that day her words rang truer than ever. After two hours of pushing, I felt like I couldn’t move a muscle. [pullquote align=”center”]“Labor requires your whole body to be in sync and maintain control. If you aren’t able to push well—if you aren’t controlled—you won’t push effectively.” —Christine Greves, MD, OB-GYN[/pullquote] “As you know, it is a big ordeal to have a baby,” says Christine Greves, MD, an OB-GYN at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando, FL. Greves says one of the best ways you can equip your body for the main event is to exercise. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women get 30 minutes of exercise each day.
This is barring any complications, according to Greves. Expectant mothers should avoid strenuous physical activity if they have an incompetent cervix, high blood pressure, heart disease, preterm labor, or other complications that have been diagnosed by a medical professional. Greves, a mom herself, recommends yoga for improving maternal strength and flexibility, as well as posture. “Labor requires your whole body to be in sync and maintain control,” says Greves. “If you aren’t able to push well—if you aren’t controlled—you won’t push effectively.” Katherine Martinelli, mom to a 4-year-old and a 16-month-old, loosely practiced yoga for 10 years before becoming pregnant and giving birth. Familiar with the benefits of the meditative exercise, Martinelli became much more committed to taking yoga classes throughout the duration of her two pregnancies.
“With my first pregnancy, I started going to prenatal yoga almost immediately,” says Martinelli. “I remember the yoga teacher was the first person I told I was pregnant besides my husband.” A study published in the Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that women who participate in prenatal yoga may experience a reduced amount of pain during labor as opposed to those who don’t. Swimming is another activity that can help ease labor pains, according to Bianca Weaver, an advanced practice registered nurse and certified nurse-midwife at Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
“Swimming can lengthen and tone your muscles,” says Weaver. “This one tends to get overlooked, but it can feel good on your body—especially when pregnant—because you are weightless in the water.” Exercise during pregnancy can decrease the risk of gestational weight gain, according to a study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
“If you gain a lot of weight in the pregnancy, it can put you at an increased [risk] of having a c-section,” says Greves. “Talk to your OB-GYN to develop an exercise plan that works for you.”
Choosing The Right Foods
A healthy diet is also an important component of the labor process. “A lot of times when women are pregnant, they have an increased appetite once the nausea goes away,” says Greves. “It’s easy to think that you should be eating for two when that is not the case.”
According to the American Pregnancy Association, women only need an extra 300 calories a day during the second and third trimesters. Eating a healthy diet can help keep the extra pounds off. How much weight a woman should gain during pregnancy depends on a couple of factors, including her pre-pregnancy weight and body mass index, as well as the number of children she is having. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, underweight women will need to gain more weight than women who are considered overweight or obese.
There are certain circumstances—such as being underweight or pregnant with multiples—that indicate a mom should plan to ingest additional calories. Regardless of how many additional calories you should eat daily, or the amount of weight you should aim to gain, the organization recommends eating a mix of fruits, vegetables, breads, grains, protein, and dairy for a healthy pregnancy diet.
Mind Over Matter
A study published in the journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth found that practicing mindfulness techniques can help decrease chronic and acute pain during labor, therefore resulting in an easier childbirth for women.
“Yoga can also help teach you how to breathe and relax your mind—both techniques that can help you have an easier labor,” says Greves. “People tend to have a big fear and are terrified of the delivery process. Well, we know it’s going to hurt because it’s not a comfortable process. Instead of focusing on the unknown, find the place in your mind that brings you happiness.” Music can be a useful tool in the delivery room. Greves suggests that her patients develop a playlist of songs to help put them at ease during the birthing process. Music has been found to provide a bit of solace and peace of mind to women during childbirth; researchers at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada found that listening to music was a key factor in managing pain and stress during the labor and birth process.
“If music doesn’t work for you, think of what you do when you are happy,” says Greves. “What do you need to calm down? Sometimes that means you may need your mom there, or it might be something else. This one is more of an individual answer, but a lot of people like [music] because it’s something they can control.”
Prepping Before You Get Pregnant
The keys to an easier labor can start before you get pregnant, according to Weaver. She recommends that women of childbearing age make healthy choices when it comes to what they eat and drink. She also cautions against smoking, drinking, and use of illicit substances while trying to conceive.
“Preconception care is very important. About 50 percent of pregnancies are unintended, so this can be a hard one for women to get under control,” says Weaver. “Making healthy choices before you are pregnant is important, otherwise you may expose your baby to all sorts of things before you even realize you are pregnant.” Taking prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid—a supplement that helps the fetus grow—can help prevent congenital heart defects in newborns as well as preterm birth, according to a study published in Reviews in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Taking folic acid before conception can also help prevent neural tube defects in babies, according to the American Pregnancy Association.
Educate yourself.
Samantha Huggins, a certified intuitive birth doula at Carriage House Birth in New York, stresses the importance of educating yourself on your birthing options as well as familiarizing yourself with your body and how it works. These two things are key to an easier labor, says Huggins.
“The mindset I like to help my patients get in is that you deliver your baby—nobody else,” says Huggins. “It starts with understanding what your body is capable of and connecting with the idea that your body is talking to you all the time. It’s not a mystery machine. When you are in labor, your body is talking to you.” As humans, it’s natural for us to want to control our birth experience, but Huggins says you have to come at it from a different approach.
“Birth does not want to be controlled, and we try so hard to control it. That’s where we end up making mistakes when we plan on this one way of doing things,” says Weaver. “Education and exploration are a huge part of getting more comfortable with your body, and can, therefore, help you have an easier labor whether you have a planned c-section or have an unmedicated vaginal home birth.”
Keep an open mind.
Martinelli emphasizes the importance of a flexible mindset when it comes to childbirth—and to not let perfectionism or a fantasy steer you in the wrong direction.
“When things don’t go as planned, it can lead to such disappointment and hurt,” says Martinelli, in reference to the picture-perfect childbirth experience. “There’s just no planning for everything, and it’s best to be prepared for a variety of outcomes.” Whether you have a medicated or unmedicated childbirth, the most important thing is that you have a safe delivery and healthy baby and not let “mom shaming” get the best of you, says Weaver.
“Mom shaming is so real. It’s really hard when you are planning on a natural route and you change your mind. People feel this overwhelming sense of guilt because they got an epidural,” says Weaver. “It doesn’t make a difference to me what my patients want—I just want to support them, so it’s hard when they feel like they let themselves down.” Weaver advises her patients to go into pregnancy and labor with an open mind.
“It’s good to have a plan, but just remember that plan isn’t set in stone—it is very variable,” says Weaver. “Give yourself wiggle room to change your plans, and don’t be hard on yourself, because at the end of the day you grew a human, and that’s pretty amazing.”
Back to school season is here and it won’t be long before backpacks and homework folders are filling your entryway. Before you can fall back into your school year routine, you’ve got to do your back to school shopping. For many, that’s a huge expense.
Although the cost of school supplies has dropped a bit, most parents can expect to spend the same amount on preparing a single kid for their first day of school as they would on a single mortgage payment, according to the 2018 Backpack Index by Huntington Bank.
For kids in elementary school, the average cost of school supplies is $637. For middle school students, stocking up on binders, pencil, and paper is probably going to cost around $941, and for high schoolers $1,355. Kind of wild, right? Now imagine you’ve got not one, but three or four kids to send back to school fully stocked with clothing and supplies. For many, it simply isn’t realistic. It costs too much!
So, should you just bite the bullet, swipe your credit card, and worry about the bill later? Maybe not. As it turns out, parents might be spending on school supplies that never get used, or they might be spending too much on what their kids really need. Check out these school supplies that are a total waste of money—and our suggestions for what you can buy instead.
What Not to Wear
Shopping for school clothing is by far the biggest expense parents face as they get their kids ready for the new school year. One report, compiled by the National Retail Federation, estimates that parents are spending an average of $236.90 on school clothes per child.
One example of overspending is buying school uniforms through the school sponsored retailer, at a specialty uniform store, or even a high-end retailer. These high-cost uniforms quickly add up when you’re trying to purchase enough items for a full week of school. Take Land’s End, for instance, a popular retailer of school uniforms. Polo shirts cost as much as $35.50 each and khakis as much as $45.50.
The good news is that this expense can be lessened by buying the right things from the right retailers. These uniform options still meet most school guidelines and won’t totally deplete your back-to-school budget.
An Essential Item for a Girl’s Uniform
Many schools include solid jumpers among their approved uniform options. It’s a good basic that can often be worn multiple times without a wash.
This Girls’ Uniform Jumper from the Amazon Essentials brand is available in both navy and khaki, ships through Prime, and only costs $14. Perfect for the hustle and bustle of the school day, all of the uniform options from Amazon Essentials are made with fabric that has a slight stretch.

A Two-Pack Wardrobe Staple for Boys and Girls
Available for both girls and boys, this two pack of polo shirts is a great value and perfect for layering under jumpers or sweaters. These long sleeves are tagless, making them perfect for kids with sensory sensitivities.
Because you can choose from 10 different color combinations for boys and eight combinations for girls, it’s likely you’ll be able to find an Amazon Essentials 2-Pack Long-Sleeve Polo Shirt set that works with your school’s’ colors. Plus, with free shipping, this is the likely the easiest back-to-school shopping you’ve ever done.

Durable Pants for Everyday Wear
These boys’ uniform pants are a bestseller on Amazon, with 370 customer reviews and an impressive 4.5 out of 5 stars. More than one reviewer has nothing but good to say about these Children’s Place Boys’ Uniform Chino Pants, pointing out how great that adjustable waist is for getting the sizing just right.
Like many of the clothing options on Amazon, these pants are a part of the Amazon Wardrobe option. This means they ship to you through Prime and you have seven days to try them on and make sure they fit properly. If they don’t work for you, you can act within the seven days and return the items for free.

Backpacks, and Lunch Bags, and Pouches, Oh My!
There’s no getting around the fact that kids need a sturdy bag to carry around their books all day long. Spending an arm and a leg on a backpack doesn’t have to be the norm. Many parents purchase a completely new set at the start of the year, including a new backpack, a new gym bag, lunch bags, and a litany of pouches for pencils, markers, and more.
Don’t purchase what you can reuse. If your kids’ bags are still in great shape from last year, say no to the pressure of buying shiny and new. This is especially true for things like pouches and lunch bags, which don’t see as much wear and tear as backpacks.
If you do need to replace last year’s stash, pay attention to the price. At Pottery Barn, the backpacks cost as much as $59.95, and a basic backpack from L.L. Bean costs around $40. Instead of shopping with a big brand, check out these affordable (but high quality) options we found on Amazon.
A Small, Floral Backpack
For younger kids, a standard backpack isn’t often unnecessary and weighs them down. This High Sierra Mini Loop Backpack is not only on the small side, it’s also an incredibly affordable option that quickly ships through Amazon Prime.
Multiple compartments help students stay organized and padded shoulder straps allow for comfortable, all-day wear. This same sized backpack is also available in light blue, navy and lime, and lilac and lavender.

A Bestselling Backpack Available in 23 Colors and Prints
Sending your child to school with an affordable backpack doesn’t have to be boring. With 23 colors or patterns to choose from, you can find a High Sierra backpack that matches your kiddo’s unique style.
This High Sierra Loop Backpack is a bestseller on Amazon, with over 2,000 customers reviews and 4.3 stars, with one reviewer sharing that they were able to carry around a laptop, textbooks, and a ton of art supplies in this roomy bag.

A Fun Lunch Bag for Under $10
Finding a durable lunch bag for under $10 is almost unheard of, but this option by Wildkin has rave reviews. This lunch bag is super compact, but it isn’t lacking in space for your little one’s lunch. Inside, you’ll find room for a sandwich, fruit and veggies, and a strap for a water bottle.
The Wildkin Olive Kids’ Lunch Box It is also water resistant, which means you don’t have to worry about leaks if your little student keeps it stored in their backpack during the day. Choose from 44 different colors and prints including Trains, Planes, and Trucks or Horse Dreams.

A Printed Pouch for Staying Organized
While we can’t promise that this pouch will help you avoid cleaning out your kiddo’s backpack once a week, it might help them keep track of small items so you’re not constantly repurchasing essentials like pencils, erasers, and colored pencils.
These Floral Canvas Pencil Pouches come in a four pack and only cost $9.96, so you know you’re getting the most bang for your buck. Each pack has two zipper pouches, allowing for optimal organization of different items.

If florals don’t appeal to your little student, these ZIPIT Monster Pencil Cases come in 14 different colors and patterns. While they’re not quite the steal of the floral canvas pouches, they’re still fairly affordable at $6.97 each.

Stock up on the little stuff.
One of the most surprising expenses parents face at the start of a new school year is the cost of stocking up on the little, inexpensive supplies. A few dollars here and there for crayons, pencils, and glue might not seem like a big deal in the aisle, but you’ll watch your total quickly add up in the checkout line thanks to big differences in price between name-brand and store-brand options.
Even more shocking, perhaps, is that fact that Amazon isn’t the best place to stock up on the little stuff. While we found a ton of great deals on backpacks and uniforms, many of the small school supplies were more than twice the price of buying them from various brick-and-mortar stores. Save $.50 or more on each of these school supplies by buying from the right supplier (and selecting the most cost-effective brand).
This off-brand option is half the cost.
Most lower-grade students are expected to show up to school with crayons. Although this school supply isn’t typically considered a huge expense, it’s a good idea to save money whenever possible! While on-brand crayons get a lot of praise, these Target-brand crayons have pretty great reviews and they’re half the price.
Buy a 24 pack of Crayola for $.50 or the same set of colors from Up & Up for $.25. A penny saved is a penny earned, right?

Another Brand Swap Out That Will Save You Big
Okay, so a few bucks isn’t going to make or break your back-to-school budget, but it will buy you a latte on your kids’ first day. No. 2 Pencils are the school supply you absolutely can’t send your kid to school without, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot.
Do another brand swap and reach for the Up & Up 24 Count #2 Pencils instead of the Ticonderoga Brand, which cost $4.49 for a pack. The Target-brand option isn’t just a fourth of the cost, they also have better reviews online. Talk about a win-win!

Don’t overspend on tissues.
Is it just us, or do classrooms go through a bizarre amount of tissues each year? Help your kids’ teachers prep for head cold season without overspending on tissues this year. Your school might recommend Kleenex-brand tissues, especially if they’ve partnered with Target on School List Assist.
Opt for the Up & Up brand instead and save over a dollar on a 640-count pack of tissues. While the Kleenex brand costs $5.99, the store brand costs just $4.49.

Avoiding the Electronics Trap
If you want to save major money on your school supply shopping, be sure you’re paying close attention to what you’re spending on electronics this year. These are the items that really add up! They’re also the school supplies you can probably get away with saying no to—or at least avoiding the pressure of buying the newest model.
Opt to go against the status quo with this phone.
If your little student isn’t asking for a cell phone yet, they probably will be after school starts. More and more parents are sending their young kids to school with a cell phone, but you shouldn’t feel afraid of going against the status quo.
We don’t have to tell you how quickly the cost of a smartphone can add up. A new iPhone can set you back up to a $1,000 and comes with monthly expenses to pay for minutes and data usage. There is also a good argument to be made that giving kids a smartphone to take to school isn’t a great idea, even if they’re in middle school. Wait Until 8th is an organization that advocates for delaying giving kids smartphones for as long as possible, ideally until they’ve reached eighth grade.
If you need your child to have a phone so they can reach you during after-school activities or while they’re hanging out with friends, there are better options. The Consumer Cellular Alcatel Go Flip is your basic flip phone, free from distracting apps or the expensive data costs. Load it with your child’s’ regularly called numbers and send them to school without worries about how much time they’ll be spending online.
[link-button href=”http://shopstyle.it/l/QTJL”]Consumer Cellular Alcatel Go Flip, $29.99 from Target[/link-button]
Same Brand, Better Price
One item we noticed on school supply shopping lists this year that could easily because a big expense were earbuds with a mic. Skullcandy earbuds seem to be a popular recommendation and they’ve got pretty great reviews, so that makes sense to us. One important thing to know about Skullcandy is that their earbuds can be pretty affordable if you know what you’re looking for.
While the Amazon’s Choice recommendation from Skullcandy is a set of sweat resistant, lightweight earbuds designed with running in mind, these $29.99 earbuds probably aren’t what your child needs for school. Instead, opt for their more affordable option — Skullcandy Ink’d. This set only costs $9.77 and still includes the mic and volume control your child will need for school.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Microphone-Tangle-Reducing-Noise-Isolating-Precision/dp/B007136EDG/”]Skullcandy Ink’d 2.0, $9.77 from Amazon[/link-button]
Which Extras to Skip
Your school’s supply list won’t dictate all of your back-to-school purchases. Certain kids will have needs outside of what’s listed by their teacher, and that’s okay. Whether it’s clothes for sports or those sparkle gel pens they feel they simply can’t do without, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on the last-minute extras. Skip some of these items when possible and make sure you’re shopping smarter for the items you decide to keep on your list.
Fancy Writing Utensils Your Allowance Earner Can Afford
When it comes to buying extras or novelty items before school, a lot of parents opt for asking their kids to cover the cost, and we think that’s really smart. If there is a trendy pen, trapper keeper, or bag your child wants, help them find an option they can afford to pay for with their allowance or birthday money.
One school supply that can easily add up is fancy writing utensils like gel pens and mechanical pencils. The Colorful Gel Pen from NYKKOLA comes in a pack of 12 pastel colors and they’re much more affordable than other, name-brand options.

Novelty Paper Without the Novelty Cost
Whether you’ve got a type-A student who loves to keep their life on track with a planner or a little Hemingway who swears they need a fancy journal at the start of each year, you’ve probably already noticed that novelty journals and planners get pricey very quickly.
If your child decides to purchases these items for themselves, guide them to an affordable option like the 2018–2019 Student Planner by Creative Notebooks or the 5 Pack of Brightly Color Field Books from Elan Publishing Companies.

Nursery Needs
1. A smart baby monitor
The baby monitor: a first-time parents’ BFF if there ever was one. For most of us, a baby monitor offers unparalleled peace of mind during that first year of baby’s life and beyond. That’s why we were so excited to discover Nanit—by far the smartest baby monitor we’ve ever used.
This high-tech monitor, chock full of awesome features like a crystal clear HD camera, background audio, sleep tracking, night vision, motion sensors, easy wall mount, and so much more, is everything we could ever want in a baby monitor. It syncs right to your phone, and despite its multitude of features, is super easy to use. And while we realize it’s a bit of a splurge, we can’t count the number of more inexpensive monitors that have pooped out on us over the years. We couldn’t love this one more and believe it’s worth every penny.

2. A mess saver
You haven’t officially joined the motherhood club until you’ve fumbled around changing wet crib sheets in the dark at 3 a.m. While we can’t promise you less mess, we can promise you less cleanup time with this organic cotton waterproof crib mattress.
This breathable, organic cotton cover will protect your crib mattress from overnight leaks, drooly babies, and the always dreadful middle-of-the-night throw-up. We love that it’s made from super soft materials so it won’t crinkle when baby moves around. We also love that it’s easy to throw in the washer (and dryer) after an accident.

3. A jack of all trades
If you’re going to stock up on one baby item for your nursery and beyond (other than diapers, of course!) make it muslin swaddle blankets. These breathable, ultra-soft blankets are truly the jack of all trades when it comes to baby gear. They’re great for keeping your little one warm, of course, but also as a swaddle, a place for tummy time or a diaper change, a sunshade, a nursing cover, and so much more.
These Aden + Anais classics are some of our all-time favorites. We love all the adorable patterns, the ridiculously soft 100 percent cotton muslin fabric, and how they hold up after what seems like hundreds of runs through the washing machine.

4. An easy-to-clean changer
As you’re soon to find out, diaper changes can be messy. There’s not only a dirty baby to deal with, but there’s the other (even less-pleasant) matter of where all of that “mess” ends up.
Enter the Keekaroo Peanut Changer: an innovative baby product if there ever was one. This soft, cushy material is impenetrable to fluids, making it super easy to clean and stopping mold and bacteria from latching on. Unlike other more traditional changing pads, this one doesn’t require any covers, pads or extra fabric, which means less clean-up for you. And it sticks to any hard surfaces (like a dresser), eliminating the need for a changing table. Love!

5. A high-tech sleep solution
Although some baby tech can feel needlessly confusing and overwhelming, there are a few rare instances where infant product innovators seem to get it just right. That’s definitely the case with the Hatch Baby Rest.
A nightlight, sound machine, and okay-to-wake clock all rolled into one, the Rest is proven to promote healthy sleep habits and to provide light colors that encourage natural circadian rhythms. (Translation: This little gem is going to get your baby to sleep better and longer. Yes, please.) It’s fully customizable and programmable and can be controlled from your smartphone. It’s smart tech that actually works, and we are so on board.

Nursery Wants
6. A comfy spot for snuggles
A glider is by no means a must-have in a baby’s nursery, but if you do have the space, we strongly encourage you to register for one. Gliders are the perfect place for bedtime stories, those middle of the night feeds, and skin-to-skin cuddles.
This sleek, modern upholstered glider and ottoman from DaVinci is neutral enough to fit seamlessly into any nursery decor and comfortable enough for any parent. It features forward and backward gliding as well as a 360-degree swivel feature, and has a high back for added support.

7. An organic, breathable crib mattress
If an organic crib mattress is important to you, look no further than the Nook Pebble Pure. This 100 percent organic sleep system is also 100 percent sleek, modern and, most importantly, completely breathable. Made from materials like eucalyptus, cotton, coconut, and wood, it’s about as natural as you’re going to get when it comes to your baby’s crib.
The Nook comes with a waterproof and stainproof washable cover, so you won’t need to buy any extra crib sheets or mattress protectors.

8. A stink-stopping diaper pail
Having a dedicated place for dirty diapers certainly isn’t a nursery must-have, but if you designate one, you want to make sure that whatever you’re using does a great job of containing all of those less-than-pleasant aromas that babies can manage to produce.
The Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail is an odor-containing champ. Because it’s made from steel, not porous plastic like many other pails, and it locks odors in within its walls. It also features a rubber seal around the rim, further helping to keep the sink inside. But best of all? It uses regular tall kitchen trash bags, not special (and expensive) custom liners, so you’ll definitely be saving money in the long run.

9. A wear-anywhere organic footie
It’s so easy to be fooled into thinking babies need a ton of clothes (we know, we get it—teeny tiny clothes are the absolutely cutest), but the reality is little ones really don’t need much at all, especially during those first few months.
The simple footie is a baby basic worth investing in. We love this organic cotton option from L’ovedbaby, both for its muted, gender-neutral design and its functionality. Fold-over mitten cuffs, attached feet, super-soft, certified-organic fabric, and an easy-snap front make this one of our newborn outfit go-tos.

10. A versatile baby basic
There are certain baby basics that you just can’t ever have enough of, and the Gerber Unisex Onesie is one of them.
These versatile white snap-bottom onesies are perfect for the first year and beyond. They’re great for adding an extra layer on cold days or for wearing on their own. We love the expandable neckline for easy dressing, and of course the amazingly affordable price point. And with this multi-sized pack, you’ll be covered for baby’s entire first year.

11. Soft, warm booties—that actually stay on
While baby booties are certainly not a need, if you live in a colder climate, you’re going to have to keep baby’s toes warm when you venture outdoors. One of the biggest problems with lots of booties, though? They fall off constantly.
If you don’t want to spend your day picking teeny, tiny socks up off the floor, you need to add the Zutano Booties to your registry sooner rather than later. Not only are these fleece booties super warm and cozy, but the shape and two-snap closure helps them stay put on baby’s feet. Style and function for the win!

12. A swaddle for self-soothing
There are few things cuter than a tiny baby burrito. While it’s totally doable to swaddle with muslin blankets, some parents—and some babies—prefer the ease of a more straightforward swaddling method.
The Love to Dream Swaddle UP is a swaddle hybrid that gives babies all the benefits of feeling safe and secure while also allowing them to move their arms up to self-soothe. It’s super easy to use (legs and hands in, zip up, and go), and zips from the top and the bottom for easy nighttime diaper changes. And not to state the obvious here, but man, do babies look ridiculously cute in this thing!

13. A bottle that mimics the breast
Whether you decide to give your little one breastmilk or formula, most moms decide to bottle feed their babes at some point during their feeding journey. There are so many bottles on the market, and choosing the right one for you is often a matter of trial and error, but we think the Comotomo Natural Feel Bottle is a great place to start.
This soft, wide-necked bottle most naturally mimics the breast in both shape and feel. Made from silicone, it’s microwave and dishwasher safe and features dual anti-colic vents to keep milk in and air out. It’s also one of the easiest-to-clean bottles we’ve ever used. (Pro tip: we don’t recommend putting a huge collection of bottles on your registry. Choose one or two to start, then see what baby likes and go from there.)

14. A thoughtfully designed bottle brush
Now that your baby is taking a bottle, you’re going to need a way to clean them. Even wide neck bottles, though easier than their narrow counterparts, tend to easily trap sticky milk and formula.
The OXO Tot Bottle Brush is our go-to for all of our bottle cleaning needs. We love its modern and functional design and its flexible neck. The silicone nipple cleaner is ideal for tiny spaces, and the included stand will keep your counters dry. It’s also dishwasher safe for when it starts smelling a bit funky.

15. An all-natural soother
The jury’s out on when to introduce a pacifier to your little one, but when you do, we think choosing one made of natural rubber is the way to go.
Although there’s a bit of trial and error involved when it comes to figuring out which pacifier fits your baby best, we think the Hevea is a good place to start. We love the simple design and the retro feel (can anyone say Insta-worthy photo opp?), as well as the cute patterned cut-outs.

16. A burp cloth and bib all in one
Fun fact: Babies spit up. A lot. And if you don’t want to ruin every shirt you own, you’ll want to add some burp cloths to your registry ASAP.
We love the look and the versatile functionality of these Aden + Anais Burpy Bibs. Made from 100 percent cotton muslin, they’re insanely absorbent and do a fantastic job soaking up all that drool and spit up. They not only fit perfectly over your shoulder, but they also feature a unique shape and back snap that allows them to drape over baby’s shoulders and be transformed into a full-coverage bib.

17. A modern drying rack must-have
A dedicated spot on your counter for drying all things baby definitely isn’t a need, but it sure is nice if you have the counter space for it. This insanely functional modern drying rack is by far our favorite choice for so many great reasons.
The Boon Lawn not only looks cool on your counter, but its flexible “grass” design does a stellar job of holding all of your freshly washed baby gear in place, meaning bottles, nipples, sippy cups, pump parts, and more will have their own spot. It also comes with the most fun accessories like twigs and stems to hold all of those itty bitty pieces that might otherwise never be seen again.

18. A high chair that will last for years
Adding a high chair to your registry may not be top on your list, but before you know it, your little one will be diving into the world of solids—and you’ll want to be prepared.
The OXO Tot Sprout High Chair has a simple, clean design that won’t create an eyesore in your kitchen. It’s pretty great when it comes to functionality, too. Suitable for kids 6 months to 5 years, it’s fully adjustable and easily converts from a traditional high chair to a regular seat that can be pulled right up to the table, giving your little one a safe place to sit for years. It’s easy to wipe down, and the recessed tray can hold over 7 ounces of spilled liquids. (Trust us, this fact will be very important to you sometime soon.)

19. A baby whisperer
One of the most beloved baby products of all time, the Fisher-Price Rock ’n Play is a registry item that you’ll be thankful for every single day during the first few months of your babe’s life Sleeper, lounger, and rocker all in one, the Rock ’n Play is an absolute lifesaver for fussy babies. We’ve never met a little one who didn’t love to rock, chill, or sleep in this magical contraption that seems to be positioned at just the right angle to soothe even the crankiest of infants.
The sleeper is light enough to easily transport from room to room, so you’ll always have a safe place to put baby no matter where you are in your house or apartment. There are mesh sides for added breathability, and there’s even an auto rock feature (complete with sounds and music) to help soothe baby to sleep when your arms need a break. Trust us on this one—it’s a true must-have!

20. An easy way to travel light
When you’re hitting the road with your little one, a safe, secure infant car seat is an absolute necessity. And if you’re a suburban mama who’s going to be in and out of the car a lot, you’ll also want to keep in mind the seat’s weight, as you’ll be lifting it quite a bit.
The Graco SnugRide is one of our favorite infant car seats for its combination of safety, affordability, and weight. Clocking in at only 7.5 pounds, this rear-facing seat is suitable for little ones from 4 to 35 pounds and up to 32”. It’s simple to install using the LATCH system and features one-click technology that attaches it easily to any other products within the Graco travel family.

21. A hands-free way to keep baby close
There’s nothing quite like newborn snuggles. Especially during those first few months, little ones love to be held super close, especially when they’re tired or cranky. But as you’ll soon learn, carrying around 8+ pounds of baby day in and day out can quickly start feeling like a neverending Pilates class.
Give yourself a break and free up your hands by adding the comfortable, breathable Ergobaby Cool Air 360 to your registry. Constructed from lightweight mesh, this carrier will keep your little one—and you—cool all year long. The wide waistband and padded shoulder straps provide excellent support and it doesn’t take a PhD to figure out how to get it on and off. Best of all? It features four carry positions (forward in, forward out, hip, and back), so your little one will be comfy on your next adventure.

22. The ultimate ride
A stroller that fits your needs and your lifestyle is probably one of the biggest and most important decisions you’re going to make as you build your registry. Although we definitely recommend that you think long and hard about how you’ll be using this important piece of baby gear (are you a city mom or a suburban family, will you be in and out of the car a lot, etc.) we think the best, most functional stroller for most families is the UPPABaby Cruz.
There are so many things we love about this (beautiful) stroller, it’s tough to pick just one. Its compact design means that it’s easy to fold and carry—but that definitely doesn’t take away from any other amazing features. It’s comfy for baby and has a great canopy and adjustable handlebar, features a roomy basket underneath, fully reclines, and can be forward or rear facing. (It’s also compatible with a bassinet and car seats from lots of different manufacturers.)

23. A safe place for baby to play
Once your little one starts sitting up—and especially once she starts crawling—you’re going to need somewhere to contain her when you get tired of chasing her around the house. Play yards are a safe, secure spot for baby to play and rest, and a must-have on your registry.
We’re huge fans of the Joovy Room2 Playard for a few key reasons. We love how roomy it is—almost 50 percent larger than most traditional play yards—meaning your little one won’t grow out of it anytime soon. We also love the insanely easy setup, the and the two wheels that make it easy to move from room to room. It even comes with a cotton mattress sheet, so you won’t have to worry about buying one separately.

24. A carrier with the perfect fit
Some mamas (and babes) will take to babywearing right away, so if you think you and your little one will fit the bill, it’s wise to add a wrap-style carrier to your registry. Unlike more structured carriers, wraps are just what they sound like—a long piece of soft, stretchy fabric that wraps around you and baby, keeping her close and comfortable.
Though some wraps can be confusing and frustrating to put on, the Boba Baby Wrap is one of the simpler ones we’ve tried and can be mastered after just a few attempts. It supports up to 35 pounds and is made from a cotton/spandex blend, giving it just the right amount of stretch and support.

25. A newborn docking station
The DockATot has taken the baby world by storm over the past few years. Some mamas don’t buy into the hype, but lots of others swear up and down by this baby lounger and can’t imagine momlife without one.
The DockATot is perfect for lounging, play, tummy time, and supervised sleep. Babies love the high, soft walls that surround the dock, giving them the snug feeling of being back in the womb while still enabling them to move freely without any straps or buckles. And mamas love the ease of portability, the washable materials, and the swoon-worthy designs.

26. An ergonomic bouncer
Adding a bouncer to your registry isn’t a necessity, but we definitely love the convenience (and fun) it provides, so it may be something you want to think about as you build your wish list.
The BabyBjorn Bouncer is simple, thoughtfully designed, and beautiful. The ergonomic design gently supports baby from day one, with no batteries, motors, or bells and whistles required—it’s baby’s own movements that power this chair! There are three different reclining positions, and the bouncer folds completely flat for easy travel. (It’s one of our favorite on-the-go baby items since it’s so simple to fold down and pop in a trunk or even a suitcase.) It even transitions into a toddler seat once baby gets a bit older.

27. A soft (and stylish) place to play
If you’re looking to cut down on the amount of baby gear you’re going to fill your house with, then using a swaddle or a blanket as a play mat for baby will certainly get the job done. But if you think you’d like a more cushioned, dedicated space for baby to play, you may want to consider adding a play mat to your registry.
The best part about SkipHop’s DoublePlay Reversible Playmat is that it will actually look good in your living room, unlike so many other play mats we’ve come across. With one side featuring a modern print and one with a more kid-friendly pattern, it won’t stick out like a sore thumb in any part of your house. The PVC-free foam is perfect for playtime, and the mat is fully waterproof and wipes clean easily. It even rolls up for simple storage.

28. An alternative (and adorable) baby bath
Before we took on this adventure of motherhood, we had no idea this baby product even existed—but we are so happy we learned about it!
Bathing a teeny, tiny, squirmy, and very slippery newborn is not for the faint of heart. But the Blooming Bath Lotus changes all that! Now, instead of having to fumble with a slippery plastic infant tub, simply slip this soft, cushy liner into almost any sink and get scrubbin’. Baby will stay safe and secure, and you won’t have to worry about bending over at awkward angles while trying to get baby clean. Genius!

A few of the items in this health and grooming collection probably would have made us cringe pre-baby. But now, we couldn’t love them more and realize that they are non-negotiable registry must-haves for any mama-to-be!
The Fridababy Bitty Bundle of Joy is the perfect starter set for taking care of baby—and you. It features two of our most loved baby products, the Nose Frida, the ultimate booger buster, and the Windi, an all-natural gas-passer. (I know, I know, but don’t knock ’em till you’ve tried ’em, mamas!) It’s also got a pair of baby-friendly nail clippers and a postpartum peri bottle for your likely sore nether regions. 30. A smarter way to take baby’s temperature
Although it’s not fun to think about, the reality of having a baby or a toddler is that they get sick. A lot. And the last thing you want to do when your newest addition is fighting off her most recent round of germs, making her even more uncomfortable by poking her over and over with a thermometer.
Enter the Kinsa: the smarter, better way to take and track your little one’s temperature. Kinsa is a Bluetooth-enabled smart thermometer that wirelessly connects to your smartphone, allowing you to record and track your little one’s temp. It takes under 8 seconds and works orally and rectally. It also works alongside a free app that offers personalized medical advice based on your child’s temperature and symptoms, which will give every new mama the peace of mind she deserves.

If you’re short on space in your linen closet and can’t imagine stuffing yet another towel in, then this next registry item probably isn’t for you. But if you have a little extra room, this super soft, super absorbent towel from Burt’s Bees is a great choice.

32. A modern teether for sore gums
Even though you probably can’t imagine it now, before you know it your little one will be gnawing on everything in sight. To make sure their gum relief doesn’t come in the form of chewing on your finger, you’ll want to add a simple teether to your registry.
We heart the Comotomo Silicone Teether for its straightforward design and of course its effectiveness in soothing tiny gums. It’s perfectly sized for little hands, making it easy for baby to maneuver it to wherever she needs the most gum relief. And since it’s made from 100 percent silicone, it’s easy to toss into the dishwasher to keep clean when it’s covered in baby drool!

33. A better, safer rattle
Babies are drawn to bright, primary colors—but they’re also drawn to putting anything and everything in their mouths. Once your baby starts to grasp and play, you’ll want to make sure that whatever she’s chewing on is natural and safe.
HABA’s Kringelring Wooden Rattle is one of our favorite first toys for little ones. Developing eyes love to look at the colorful beads around this pliable ring, and tiny hands love to grab and shake it. The ring is handcrafted from natural beechwood, so it’s totally fine to let your little one gnaw away.

The Play Gym by Lovevery is pretty much everything you’d ever want or need in a baby play gym—and more. Extensively researched and designed specifically to help foster each of your baby’s learning stages, this gym will take you through an entire year of play and beyond. The HaloVa Land doesn’t scream “diaper bag,” but has all the functionality that you need for a day out with your little. Made from water-resistant fabric, it’s easy to wipe clean, a feature you’ll definitely appreciate in the coming months. There are also a ton of pockets for storing everything from bottles and snacks to your keys and wallet. And since it’s a backpack style, you’ll always have your hands free for ultimate moming.

37. A soothing way to relieve soreness
If you’re going to be a breastfeeding or pumping mama, one of the most common issues you may face, especially during the first few weeks of your baby’s life, is sore nipples. There are lots of creams available to soothe this painful problem, but we’ve found that most of them are super sticky and tough to apply. Not the case with Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter.
This botanical-rich cream goes on smoothly and easily without any thick, sticky residue. It’s rich in naturally soothing organic ingredients like calendula, cocoa and shea butters, and olive oil, so you won’t have to worry when your baby gets some in her mouth. And it really works; a little goes a long way to providing incredible relief.

Every parent of an infant has had that moment where they look at the baby’s snacks and wonder…”What does this taste like?” Then they take a nibble and find out that it tastes great!
Babies, after all, are just extremely young and tiny humans, and products that work for humans tend to work for all humans. The next time you go shopping for your baby, pick up two of everything. You’re going to want to get in on this stuff.
Here are baby products that are great for adults, too, just with a little variation on the uses.
1. Boudreaux’s Butt Paste isn’t just for butts.
This stuff is a goldmine of DIY hacks. It’s full of zinc oxide, which is a great remedy for irritated skin.
Try a dab of paste on your next horrible mosquito bite, or slather it on a healing sunburn for a bit of immediate relief. Get a 16-ounce tub here.
[products ids=’1080465′ type=full]
2. Baby shampoo is a super-gentle cleanser.
That means it’s ideal for people with sensitive skin. If you’re prone to eyelid irritation, you can even use a drop of the stuff on a washcloth to scrub those lids in the shower.
Even if you don’t need baby shampoo yourself, it’s the ideal cleanser for dog and cat baths, assuming you can get your pet into the tub in the first place. It’s also useful for cleaning your combs and brushes when they start to get a little greasy or dirty.
In short, baby shampoo is the ultimate soap. Why do we even bother with anything else?
3. Baby wipes seem tailor made for makeup removal.
At the end of a long day, use a nice cool baby wipe to scrub away makeup. Pack a few with you when you go out of town to use as a quick, hassle-free face wash.
4. Diapers are a key ingredient in a super-effective ice pack.
As the video below demonstrates, you can use diapers for something way beyond their intended purpose. With some specific liquids and an absorbent diaper, you can freeze up a reliable and reusable ice pack.
It’s a decent stand-in for dry shampoo or deodorant, and it can help prevent stinky feet. You can also bring it to the beach to help remove sand from your feet. Watch the video to see a few of our favorite baby powder hacks:
While the link between modern talcum powder (which no longer contains asbestos) and ovarian cancer is unclear, you might want to find a talc-free baby powder just in case. There are plenty of them on the market.
After a night of overindulgence, try sipping Pedialyte. It’s packed with electrolytes and it has less sugar than most sports drinks.
It was designed to rehydrate sick children, but it can do the same thing for adults. Get 24 powder packs of Pedialyte here—just add water!
[products ids=’1080499′ type=full]
7. People with sensitive skin should try switching to baby detergent.
Soaps for babies are super gentle, and the same is true about laundry detergent made for the pre-K set.
Lots of adults with allergies or skin sensitivities find that baby detergents bother them less than typical adult detergents, which are packed with harsh chemicals and fragrances. Get a 150-ounce bottle of Dreft Baby Laundry Detergent here.
[products ids=’1080501′ type=full]
8. Baby sunscreen is powerful enough to work for adults, too.
No matter how old you are, SPF is SPF. Try pilfering a little of your infant’s sunscreen the next time you head to the beach.
Waterproof mascara is great. You can even cry without rocking a total goth look. When the night is over, though, it can be a nightmare to get your eyelashes clean.
That’s when you should reach for a bottle of baby oil. Waterproof mascara is, well, waterproof, so trying to wash it off in the sink won’t do much. But oil and water hate each other, so oil helps to break down tough cosmetics. Just dip a cotton swab in baby oil and gently apply to your eyelashes with side-to-side swipes. Then rinse. Get two 16.9-ounce bottles of Johnson and Johnson’s original baby oil for kids here.
[products ids=’1080503′ type=full]
10. Diaper cream is one of the best moisturizing lotions out there.
You can spend $100 on a tub of super-fancy, age-defying face cream, or you can just reach for the nearest tube of diaper cream. It locks in moisture and helps your skin stay hydrated
13. Baby shampoo doubles as a perfect detergent for delicate fabrics.
You can’t throw your cashmere sweater in the wash with everything else. Fragile, high-quality fabrics require a little babying, and we mean that literally.
14. Baby oil is the perfect substance for polishing stainless steel appliances.
Nothing looks classier than a kitchen full of stainless steel. Unfortunately, nothing collects grease and grime like this chic metal does, either.
The solution is to rinse down your stainless steel appliances with a bit of dish soap. Once you’ve got the gunk removed, though, they could still use a polish. That’s where the baby oil comes in.
Rub down steel surfaces with an oiled cloth to create a clean, bright shine. This works on faucets too, by the way.
Baby oil is also an effective polish for wooden surfaces. Wooden tables tend to collect water rings no matter how many times you tell your guests to use a coaster. Polish a table with baby oil, though, and those rings will disappear. Even better, the baby oil forms a barrier against moisture, so it’ll make new water rings less likely to show up. 15. Baby wipes can get rid of deodorant stains.

16. There’s one last use for baby wipes that you might not have thought of: Use them to clean your cat!
There’s no way you’re coaxing Fluffy into the bath, and you can’t take her to the grooming place every time she gets a little dirty. Baby wipes are a great way to take care of a feline’s messy face (or behind!) without infuriating them.
Getting your home ready for baby can be downright overwhelming. Becoming a new mom is a huge transition and stocking up on baby supplies is a good way to get a head start and prepare yourself for the change. Unfortunately, with so many options to choose from, it’s almost impossible to decide which products are worth spending money on and will actually come in handy down the road. No one wants to end up with closets stuffed with baby gear taking up space. One of the best ways to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to buying baby gear is seeing what other parents have bought, used, and loved before. Check out these 40 baby and toddler products with high ratings and gushing reviews on Amazon, and put what you need on your baby registry ASAP.
1. The Basic Onesies You’ll Want in Every Size
There is a good reason why this five pack of Gerber onesies is a number one bestseller on Amazon—this basic wardrobe piece is so useful! It might seem like nothing special at first glance, but a white onesie is perfect for layering under sleepers on cold nights or acting alone for lazy summer days at home.
Order a five pack or two in every single size. Always keep a spare in the diaper bag; you’ll be so glad you did the first time you come face-to-face with your first changing table fiasco or your gassy baby spits up all over an outfit. Gerber Unisex Baby 5-Pack Short-Sleeve White Onesies, $9.99 from Amazon
2. A Manual Breast Pump for Easy Expression
Having an electric double pump is perfect for working moms expressing breast milk several times a day, but there’s something so simple about having a manual pump on hand at home.
An electric pump can be cumbersome and takes time to set up. Plus, if you’re pumping out and about, you have to find an outlet or keep your bag stocked with batteries. Whether you’re slowly starting to build your freezer stash for a return to work or need an easy way to express milk on date night, the NatureBond Silicone Manual Pump provides efficient milk expression and it’s one of the most affordable pumping options out there. NatureBond Silicone Manual Breast Pump, $14.79 from Amazon
3. A Discreet, Milk-Saving Cup
While we’re talking about amazing breastfeeding products, we can’t fail to mention Freemie Collection Cups. At $59.99, these are definitely an investment, but they could be a lifesaver for working moms struggling to find a few moments alone to pump.
Since they can be worn under your shirt, they’re easily concealable. This allows you to pump while working at your desk, completely hands-free so you can stay on task on busy days. The Freemie Collection Cups can be used with most electric pumps and collect up to eight ounces in each cup. Once you’ve finished pumping, the milk can be easily dumped into a storage bag. Freemie Collection Cups, $59.99 from Amazon
4. A Multi-Functional Nursing Cover
Nursing covers should be all about what makes mom most comfortable, and this nursing cover accomplishes just that. It’s a lightweight fabric that slips over your neck like a scarf, allowing for full coverage in the front and on both sides, but an easy view for mom from the top.
This nursing cover is also multi-functional, which is awesome. It serves as a car seat cover, meaning once mom is done nursing, she can stretch it over the infant carrier to ensure complete shade from light in or outdoors so the happily fed babe can rest. The cover can also be stretched over highchairs or shopping carts to protect your baby from germs, be worn as a poncho, or be wrapped like an infinity scarf. Breastfeeding Scarf and Baby Car Seat Canopy, $16.99 from Amazon
5. A Sustainable Baby Bottle
Even if you plan to breastfeed, it’s a good idea to have bottles on hand in case your baby needs to eat during short spurts of separation. Plus, with all the extra breast milk you’ve been stashing away, you just might decide you need a date night or solo trip to the coffee shop for a little peace and quiet.
The more we learn about plastic, the more clear it becomes that it’s better to avoid this hard-to-recycle product that can come with potential health risks. A glass baby bottle is a sustainable alternative and Evenflo Bottles have a ton of amazing feedback from moms who have used them. It’s a vented bottle, which means it may help reduce colic in babies dealing with gassy tummies. Evenflo Glass Premium Proflo Vented Bottles, $18.99 for a 6-pack from Amazon
6. A Safe Option for Warming Up Bottles
Since microwaving bottles can overheat the milk and even create unexpected hot spots that can burn your baby’s tongue, most people heat their baby bottles in warm water. This has never been a perfect solution because it takes a lot of time. When you’ve got a very hungry baby on your hands, it feels like it takes forever.
The Philips AVENT Warmer is a safe option for warming up bottles because it warms the milk evenly by circulating it during the warming process. It’s also a quick option, taking only three minutes to warm a bottle to a perfectly drinkable temperature. Philips AVENT Bottle Warmer. $22.62 from Amazon
7. A Simpler Solution to Bottle Cleaning
Sometimes we don’t realize something is a problem until a product solves that problem for us. Keeping bottles clean is likely one of those annoying little tasks you didn’t know could get a little easier.
The bottle brush from OXO not only has a brush for cleaning the bottle itself, it also has a brush the size of a pipe cleaner for scrubbing out bottle nipples. This particular bottle cleaner comes with a stand, so you can keep it handy and clean on your kitchen counter no matter how cluttered it might be with other newborn baby supplies. OXO TOT Bottle Brush with Nipple Cleaner and Stand, $6.99 from Amazon
8. A Darling Drying Rack for All Those Baby Bottles
Once you become a mom, baby bottles, sippy cups, dishes, and tiny spoons will quickly start to take over your kitchen. Why not give them an adorable place to rest?
This Boon Lawn Drying Rack looks like a well-manicured lawn and the flexible blades of grass are perfect for drying tiny dishes of all sizes. It is also a part of a collection, with add-ons like trees with branches for bottle lids or flowers to hold freshly sanitized pacifiers. The rack easily disassembles into two pieces for a quick clean between uses. Boon Lawn Countertop Drying Rack Green, $21.99 from Amazon
9. For Warming Up Cold Wipes
Brrr! Wipes right from the package can startle sleepy babes during midnight diapers changes. A wipe warmer keeps wet wipes at a more comfortable temperature, ready to go for diaper changes at any time of the day or night.
There are a lot of wipe warmers out there, but this particular model by hiccapop enjoys a four-and-a-half star rating on Amazon. Here is what Shannon, a mom and Amazon reviewer had to say:
I wish we had one these back when my oldest child was a baby…I can tell the baby enjoys it as well…No more visible flinching when touched with a cold wet wipe!
Many diaper creams are made to be water resistant, protecting tiny tushes from the irritation of a wet or soiled diaper. Unfortunately for the caregivers doing the applying, this also means that washing your hands after application involves a lot of scrubbing and the smell can take hours to dissipate from your hands.
Allow us to introduce an amazing little tool made for the sole purpose of taking some of the mess out of diaper changing. The Diaper Cream Brush by BabyBum is literally a spatula for diaper paste application—genius! This particular option is a two pack that includes a full-size spatula for home and a travel size to keep in your diaper bag. BabyBum Diaper Cream Brush, $17.99 from Amazon
11. A Little-Discussed New-Mom Healing Product
Giving birth comes with all kinds of little surprises, and the healing process after giving birth often doesn’t get a lot of airtime until you’ve already had your baby. After giving birth, you’ll quickly learn that it is going to take a bit of time before you’re healed enough to wipe without pain.
From the same geniuses responsible for the NoseFrida (more on that later), this easy-to-use portable bidet is exactly what a new mom needs for a gentle cleaning option. It’s the baby product you never knew you needed that will quickly become your new best friend. Fridababy Fridet, The MomWasher, $14.99 from Amazon
12. An Easy-to-Clean Bib That Actually Works
Your life may be all bottle warmers and breast milk now, but it won’t be long before your suckling babe is ready for big kid food, and it’s going to come with a lot of mess. Bibs may be a no-brainer for parents everywhere, but not all bibs are created equal! Some bibs require a run in the washer after every use and others do very little to guard your baby’s lap from dropped food.
Baby Bibs makes a waterproof, silicone bib that addresses all the mealtime messes. Not only is it easy to clean, requiring nothing more than a dunk in soapy water and good wipe with a rag, it also has a shelf that can catch food that misses your baby’s mouth. Waterproof Silicone Bib, $18.97 for a 2-pack from Amazon
13. A Sanity-Saving Placemat
Even if it’s only a phase, there’s nothing quite as aggravating as watching your toddler toss a plate full of food on the floor. Most babies don’t mean any harm; they’re just looking for a little fun. Make mealtime a little less chaotic with a placemat-and-plate combo that actually suctions to the table or highchair.
Made from silicone, this placemat from Silivo contains a plate shaped like a darling little elephant and separated into sections for different kinds of foods. It’s a parent favorite on Amazon, too. Silicone Baby Placemat, $15.99 from Amazon
14. A Yummy Teething Solution
Introducing solid foods can create a lot of anxiety for moms. It is completely normal to worry about the risk of choking, and Munchkin has found a great way to assuage those worries with their Fresh Food Feeder.
Parents can place solid foods in the mesh bag, which is attached to an easy-to-hold, BPA-free plastic ring. Then, their child can happily munch on the food without the risk of them biting off more than they can chew. Outside of serving as a safe introduction to solid foods, the Fresh Food Feeder can be used for teething relief. Instead of food, you can place a small chunk of frozen breastmilk or frozen baby food in the mesh bag so your teething baby can gum on it for pain relief. Munchkin Fresh Food Feeder, $5.99 for 2-pack from Amazon
15. An Introduction to Lidless Cups, Without the Spills
Transition to a lidless cup without daily spills. The Miracle 360 Trainer Cup is another genius product by Munchkin. Although the cup has a lid, it’s a spoutless one, meaning instead of sucking a spout or straw, your child can tip the cup and drink just as they would from a lidless cup.
The cup has a seal around the entire rim that will allow your child to sip without dribbling or spilling their drink. According to reviewers, it is simple enough for young toddlers to figure out and it doesn’t leak (even when it gets thrown across the room). Munchkin Miracle 360 Trainer Cup, $12.99 for a 2-pack from Amazon
16. A Snack Cup for Road Trips and Play Dates
When it comes time to pack snacks, any old ziplock will do, right? Not so fast. Think just how awesome it would be if a product existed that allowed toddlers to reach in and grab a bite or two at a time without spilling their crumbs everywhere.
Made with soft flaps instead of a lid, this cup is the spill-proof snack caddy you never knew you needed. According to reviewer Katelyn Schreyer, these cups don’t leak crumbs in the diaper bag and were simple for her nine-month-old twins to figure out. “You can fill it with Goldfish or Cheerios and throw it and nothing will come out. Of course, a baby will still get things out and make a mess, but this paces the mess-making,” she says. Munchkin Two Piece Snack Catcher, $4.39 from Amazon
17. A Gentler Stuffy Nose Cleaner
Bulb syringes may be an efficient option for clearing out a stuffy nose, but they’re no fun for mom or baby! Whether you’ve got a newborn or a wriggling toddler, it’s awful having to pin them down to suction out their nose while they scream.
The Nose Frida is a gentler way to clean out a stuffy nose because you control the suction with your mouth. Before you get totally grossed out, you should know that a barrier sponge prevents snot from passing from the plastic snot receptacle into the tube you place in your mouth. PHEW! Another perk of the Nose Frida is that it is way easy to clean since it easily disassembles for quick sanitation. NoseFrida the Snotsucker, $19.86 from Amazon
18. A Potty Seat for Any Toilet
When you’re potty training, it’s easy to feel like you’re confined to living your life within a few feet of the bathroom, ready to race your child to the potty chair at the slightest hint they might need to go.
This is the product that will help you regain your freedom without putting your toddler back in diapers. The Munchkin Potty Seats fits on top of the seat of full-size toilets, has handles for kids to hang onto, and is perfectly sized for little potty trainees. Pack it for vacation or send it to the in-laws when you and your partner need a night out but want to keep up with potty training efforts. Munchkin Sturdy Potty Seat, $11.99 from Amazon
19. A Solution for On-the-Go Diaper Changes
A bestseller on Amazon, the Skip Hop Portable Changing Station is all about keeping diaper changes convenient and clean. Since it easily fits in a diaper bag, it’s a baby product you can bring with you anywhere. When your baby needs a change, it can be unfolded on any surface.
With a pocket for wipes and a few diapers as well as a handle, it can easily act as a small diaper bag when you’re just running to the store or don’t feel like packing the entire arsenal of on-the-go baby gear. One reviewer wrote that she uses it to store a onesie, pants, diaper cream, and hand sanitizer in addition to a diaper and wipes. The changing pad is available in 11 different colors and matches many of the other Skip Hop baby products Skip Hop Baby Pronto Portable Changing Station, $29.28 from Amazon
20. Keep Baby Cool During Summer Months
Stop worrying about whether your baby is staying cool enough in their rear-facing seat during summer months. This cute little fan can be charged in advance using a USB port and clips on the hood of infant carriers, blowing cool air into your child’s seat to keep them comfortable.
It’s a lightweight fan with a lot of power and it features 360-degree rotation, meaning it will really get the air moving. Because this is a chargeable fan, you can also attach it to strollers for outings in the summer heat. Battery Operated Clip On Fan, $19.99 from Amazon
21. A Blind That Keeps Bright Sunlight out of the Back Seat
When babies are buckled tightly and safely in their car seats, there is little they can do to escape the glaring sun on hot summer days. Made by Enovoe, this set of window shades clings directly to the windows, providing baby with sun protection while they ride in the car.
This car window shade blocks 97 percent of UV rays. It’s an affordable no-brainer safety purchase that easily gets forgotten during the process of baby proofing. Enovoe Car Window Shade, $12.97 for 4-pack from Amazon
22. A Mirror For Long Car Rides
Rear-facing is the safest, and legal, option for babies and young toddlers, but it also means baby’s face is obscured from view. This back seat mirror allows you to keep a close eye on baby or simply exchanged smiles during a long car ride.
A really great baby carrier can be a lifesaver for moms with their hands full. Whether you’re looking to free up your hands so you can hold onto to your older kids or carry groceries inside, or you’re looking for a way to comfort a needy baby while getting a few things done, you’re going to be glad you made this baby product a non-negotiable part of your baby registry.
The great thing about the Infantino Flip 4-in-1 Carrier is that it grows with your baby and can be used from eight pounds up to 32 pounds. It can also be worn in many ways, including on your back or with baby facing out to see the world. Infantino Flip 4-in-1 Convertible Carrier, $29.69 from Amazon
24. A Hands-Free Backpack Diaper Bag
Bring everything you need to take care of your baby on the go without tying up your hands with an awkward or clunky diaper bag. This backpack diaper bag is seriously perfect for busy moms, with a pocket for keeping bottles warm, a waterproof interior liner, and plenty of room for diapers, teething toys, and an extra change of clothes.
25. A Cute Backpack for Toddlers That Keeps Them Safe
Leashes get a lot of criticism in the parenting world, but there is something to be said for a product that helps moms with multiple kids keep their busy toddlers safe. If you’ve got one of those toddlers who is hard to keep track of or you simply don’t have enough hands to walk all of your kids through a parking lot, this is a product that will bring you a lot of peace of mind.
Babies come with a lot of stuff, and strollers rarely have enough pockets for everything you need on the go. Make your stroller a little more functional with a stroller organizer that attaches to the handle. With space for extra cups, your phone, snacks, diapers, and toys, you won’t even need to bring a diaper bag along on your next trip to the park.
One Amazon reviewer said she had only positive things to say about this organizer, that the design is sleek, and that it was obviously so well thought out by the manufacturers. Stroller Organizer with Cup Holders, $31.99 from Amazon
27. Hassle-Free Cabinet Latches
If you’ve ever installed cabinet latches, you know they’re a total pain. Everything has to line up perfectly for them to work properly and adding them to every shelf is generally a tedious baby proofing project to take on.
The Xtraguard Dual Action Multi Latches are totally low fuss. Instead of attaching with screws, they attach using adhesive and are pretty easy to install and adjust to get the right fit. They’re also easy to remove and won’t leave holes or marks on cabinets, meaning you can ditch them all together once you’re ready to move past the locked cabinets phase of parenting. Munchkin Xtraguard Dual Action Multi Use Latches, $7.99 for a pair from Amazon
28. An Easy-to-Open Baby Gate
Even if you don’t have stairs to worry about, it is nice to have the option to keep baby contained once they start to move. A baby gate that can be easily opened by mom but keep baby out is a great way to create boundaries when you want to keep them out of unsafe rooms or if you’re simply trying to keep the toy tornado contained to a single part of the house.
Finding a baby gate that fits doorways and hallways can sometimes be tough, but this extra wide option from Regalo comes with a kit for adjusting the size and adding six inches of width. Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Gate, $32 from Amazon
29. Corner Protectors for Newly Walking Toddlers
Keeping a newly walking toddler from injuring themselves can easily become a full-time job. Give your baby some room to explore and yourself a break from constantly intercepting them before they run into a corner by baby proofing the dangerous and potentially painful aspects of your home.
Toddlers seem to be the perfect height for running their heads right into end table and coffee table corners and that’s where these corner guards come in handy. They’re clear, so they’re not a total eyesore, and they’re easy to install with adhesive backing. Clear Corner Protectors, $16.95 for 20-pack from Amazon
30. A Booster Seat for On the Go
Family get-togethers or dinner out can be a real pain if there aren’t high chairs or booster seats handy. The Summer Infant Portable Booster is easy to unfold and can be placed in a chair at the table or on the floor our ground outdoors.
Made for indoor or outdoor use, this is a baby essential that will likely get a lot of use. It includes a carrying bag and is available in aqua, blue, green, and pink. Summer Infant Pop N’ Sit Booster, $29.99 from Amazon
31. Easy-to-Grip Nail Clippers for Tiny Fingers and Toes
Every parent has heard a horror story from a friend or family member who accidentally cut the tip of their child’s finger while trimming their nails. It’s hard not to be terrified of touching them at all!
The Steady Grip Nail Clippers from Safety First are perfect for adults hands but have clippers small enough for tiny fingers and toes. Check out this hilarious, but oh-so-accurate review from James:
Clipping a child’s nails is like trying to wrestle a pig in mud at times. If you can relate, these are for you. The larger body and handle of these trimmers give you complete control as you try to pin down your little bundle of joy and try to not clip off their entire finger.
32. A Toothbrush That Makes Brushing Baby’s Teeth Easy
Speaking of wrestling a pig in the mud, let’s talk about just how dramatic those first several months of brushing our babies’ teeth can be. Talking a teething baby into holding still for 90 seconds is no easy task.
Meet the finger brush. It has tiny rubber bristles and slips on your finger. You can use it to gently brush food away from your baby’s teeth and introduce the taste of toothpaste without too much fuss. According to reviewers, many babies actually enjoy chewing on the toothbrush (while it’s on a parent’s finger) for relief from teething. Baby Finger Toothbrush by BabyBaus, $7.97 for a 3-pack from Amazon
33. A Soft Bath for Newborn Babies
Bathtime is a parenting ritual that is surprisingly nerve-wracking during the early months of your baby’s life. For months, babies are too wobbly to sit on their own and young babies make random jerks and movements until their muscles get stronger.
Made for very young babies, the Blooming Bath Lotus is like a pillow for bathtime. Shaped like a flower, it fits into most sinks, giving your baby a soft place to rest that is a great alternative to hard, plastic baby baths. Blooming Bath Lotus, $39.99 from Amazon
34. A Bath Seat That Steadies Young Babies
Even after babies start sitting, they continue to take regular, unexpected falls and have trouble staying balanced, especially in the bath.
Parents should always hold onto unsteady babies in the bath and remain within arms reach once they’re sitting well on their own. That said, this special baby bath adds a little extra security to the bathtime routine by acting as an extra support for baby. The arms extend to suction in place on the tub walls, making it easy to set up for and pull down after each bath. Summer Infant My Bath Seat, $39.99 from Amazon
35. A Bath Toy That Monitors the Water Temperature
Make sure your baby’s baths are always comfortable and safe with this baby bath toy that doubles as a water thermometer.
This fun rubber duck floats on the water and displays the temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit as well as the time. If the water gets too hot or too cold, an alarm sounds letting the parent know they should take action. Baby Duck Thermometer, $13.99 from Amazon
36. A Bathtime Rinse Without The Tears
Even if you find tear-free shampoo, kids hate having water and soap in their face during baths.
Is there anything cuter than this miniature potty seat that looks just like a big kid toilet?
Made by Summer Infant, kids can practice using the bathroom just like an adult with a lid that lifts and closes and a handle they can push after they’re all done. Wipes can be stored in a top compartment, too. Summer Infant My Size Potty, $24.86 from Amazon
38. A Little Extra Protection for Deep Sleepers
A lot of moms find themselves troubleshooting heavy wetters and deep sleepers as baby grows older. Instead of waking them in the night for a trip to the potty or a diaper change, try adding a little extra protection to their overnight diaper.
Make taking baths more than just bearable with this interactive bathtime toy.
Made by Munchkin, your little one can use their mini fishing pole to go fishing for magnetic toys that float on the surface of the water. So fun! The set includes a small fishing pole with a reel and three floating characters. Munchkin Fishin’ Bath Toy, $7.95 from Amazon
40. A Decorate-It-Yourself Night Light
A night light is a nursery essential that often gets overlooked. Instead of using a bright lamp each time your baby needs a change in the middle of the night, an adjustable light night light provides just enough light to guide you without overstimulating you or your baby.
The VAVA Night Light is a lot of fun too. It comes with adjustable stickers that can be moved around the dome of the light to cast shadows on the ceiling and walls. This is truly a birth-to-childhood essential that will become your growing child’s comfort light if they start to struggle with fears of the dark. VAVA Night Light for Kids, $19.99 from Amazon
Congratulations, mama-to-be. You’re pregnant! You’re about to embark on an adventure like no other. The next nine months will be some of the most exciting of your life, filled with new experiences, anticipation, and so, so much love. But they’re going to be filled with lots of questions, changes, and unknowns, too. Not to worry, mamas. We’ve so got you covered. Although each pregnancy is different, there are certain tried-and-true products that every pregnant mama needs to know about. From morning sickness hacks to serious self-care, here are the 38 essentials that you just can’t live without!
First Trimester
For some (lucky, lucky) women, the first trimester will fly by with hardly any pregnancy symptoms at all. Unfortunately for lots of moms-to-be, though, the first 12 to 14 weeks bring with them not just the excitement and anticipation of what’s to come but a few pretty unpleasant side effects as well, like bloated bellies, swollen breasts, and lots of nausea. Here are the must-haves to make your first trimester as pleasant as possible.
1. A Reprieve From Morning Sickness
Morning sickness—or all day sickness? If you’re one of the (un)lucky ones to suffer from morning sickness, you know just how miserable it can be. But for some mamas, the thought of putting anything in your body—even something that may help you feel better—turns your stomach even more.
Enter the Sea-Band Mama! wristband, the natural, drug-free alternative to easing your morning sickness during those early months of pregnancy. Working with your body’s natural acupressure points on your wrist, this soft, comfy fabric band can be worn all day or whenever you’re in need of some immediate relief. It’s safe, washable, and, best of all, effective. Get it on Amazon for $10.49.
2. An Easy (and Beautiful) Way to Stay Hydrated
Even when you’re not growing an entirely new person inside, it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day. So when you’re pregnant, it’s even more important!
We heart S’well insulated water bottles for so many reasons. Aside from being the sleekest, most beautiful water bottles we ever did see, they’re also insanely functional. They’re constructed from BPA-free stainless steel, making them safe, sturdy, and shatterproof. They’re also vacuum insulated, which means they’ll keep your beverage cold for 24 hours or hot for 12. They’re easy to drink from, simple to clean, and hold plenty of water to keep you hydrated throughout the day. And did we mention how beautiful they are? (I think we did, but it’s worth repeating.) Get it on Amazon for $35.00.
3. For a Little Extra Breathing Room
That gorgeous baby bump hasn’t quite popped yet, but getting the zipper up on your regular pants is not happening. What’s a mama to do? Grab a Bellaband, that’s what—the perfect solution to that in-between phase that all pregnant mamas will face.
The Bellaband, “holding pants up since 2001,” is exactly what you need when you’re transitioning from your everyday clothes but aren’t ready for those maternity pants just yet. This soft, stretchy fabric band can be worn folded over to hold up unbuttoned pants or pulled up full panel to keep sagging maternity pants in place. And don’t throw it out after baby arrives, either—it’s the perfect postpartum piece for when you’re returning to your pre-baby body. Get it on Amazon for $23.00 and up.
4. For Your Growing Girls
There are few things more uncomfortable than a too-tight bra, especially when you’re pregnant. And since one of the first symptoms of pregnancy is often swollen breasts, it’s likely that you’ll be experiencing a larger than normal chest size sometime during your first trimester.
Brah! Extender to the rescue! These comfortable microfiber extenders hook easily onto any bra, providing you a little extra breathing room when you need it the most. They’re perfect to wear throughout (and after) your pregnancy when your bra size is fluctuating. And they come in a set of white, beige, and black, so they’ll match almost any bra design. Get them on Amazon for $7.95.
5. A Lifelong Keepsake
Although 40 weeks of pregnancy may feel like a lifetime when you’re going through it, someday you’ll look back at this time in your life and want to remember every single magical detail. Promptly journals can help you do just that, even if you’re not someone who is naturally drawn to journaling.
With their simple and elegant linen-wrapped design, these heirloom-quality handbound journals are a stunning way to record one of life’s most precious journeys. Beginning with pregnancy and going all the way through your little one’s eighteenth birthday, the journal is filled with easy prompts that make recording your pregnancy and birth super simple. Promptly offers a beautiful and easy way to remember your most treasured moments. Get it on Amazon for $32.00.
6. A Healthier Pop of Color
For lots of women, pregnancy is a time to step back and take a closer look at what you’ll be putting in (and on) your body for the next nine months. Many moms-to-be don’t want to sacrifice their regular beauty routines, so they’re looking for a safer, more natural way to do it.
Zoya nail polish can help. With its 10 Free Formula, this pregnancy-safe nail polish is made without some of the most common chemicals found in other brand-name polishes, including things like formaldehyde, phthalates, lead, and parabens. Plus, it’s vegan-friendly, goes on smoothly, doesn’t chip easily, and is available in a wide array of gorgeous shades. Get it on Amazon for $10.00.
7. A Better Tasting Prenatal Vitamin
Taking your prenatal vitamin probably doesn’t rank up there as one of the highlights of your day, am I right? But what if it could?
Olly Essential Prenatals are some of the most delicious vitamins around. With a mix of awesome citrus-inspired flavors including ruby red grapefruit, clementine, and meyer lemon, you’ll wonder if you’re taking your vitamins or just enjoying some tasty gummies. (Just remember to brush those teeth afterward to keep your dentist happy, please!) And, of course, they’re filled with more than just great taste. Ollys contain vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, and B12 along with folic acid and omega-3 fatty acids to make sure your pregnancy journey is a healthy one. Get them on Amazon for $13.60 and up.
8. Pregnancy-Safe Skincare
The first trimester of pregnancy can often bring with it a whole lot of fatigue, which may not leave you feeling like your best self. If you’re looking to brighten your complexion and revel in that pregnancy glow but you’re concerned about using pregnancy-safe ingredients, make space in your medicine cabinet for Acure’s Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub.
Derived from plant-based ingredients, this energizing scrub gently exfoliates your skin with ingredients like sea kelp and French green clay. It works on all skin types and is free of all the things you may want to avoid during (and after) pregnancy like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. It also smells amazing, which makes us love it even more. Get it on Amazon for $9.99.
9. An Insta-Worthy Milestone Marker
Documenting your growing baby bump is one of the most fun parts of pregnancy. To take your Instagram feed to the next level, try these sweet Pregnancy Belly Stickers from Lucy Darling.
Each pack comes with 12 floral-inspired peel-and-stick decals. At 4 inches wide, they’re easy to see in a photograph, and the muted color palette and pops of florals look great with any filter. We recommend printing out a few of the photos and including them in your baby book so you’ll always remember your growing bump. Get them on Amazon for $15.99.
10. A Worry-Free Natural Cleaner That Actually Works
The last thing you’re going to want to do during your first trimester of pregnancy—or any time, for that matter—is to inhale harmful fumes from household cleaning products. If you’re looking to shake up your usual cleaning regimen for something more natural, this Multi-Surface Cleaner from Puracy is a great place to start.
This affordable, effective plant-based cleaner does a great job on almost any mess (think grease, fingerprints, grime, adhesives, and more) and is safe to use on all surfaces. It’s also safe for you. It’s hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and child- and pet-safe. And each bottle has 250 applications, so a little will go a long way. Get it on Amazon for $13.29.
Second Trimester
You’re in the sweet spot now, mamas! For lots of moms-to-be, the second trimester is when all the fun parts of pregnancy begin. Your bump is growing. So you can rock all your new maternity clothes, you’ll soon feel your little one’s first kicks, and hopefully the morning sickness you may have dealt with during your first trimester is now a thing of the past. Soak it all in and enjoy! Here are our picks for rocking that second trimester bump.
11. The Belly Cream of Your Dreams
It’s time to get your self-care on, mama. Your baby bump is growing, bringing with it stretching skin in need of a little TLC. Keep your bump hydrated, smooth, and nourished with this ah-mazing Belly Butter from Burt’s Bees.
We love starting and ending our day by rubbing this thick, luxurious body butter all over our ever-expanding bump. Will it prevent stretch marks? The jury’s still out on that one. But what it will do is moisturize and soften your skin with a healthy dose of cocoa, shea, and jojoba butters. It’s fragrance-free, which we love, and 99 percent naturally formulated, which we love even more. Get it on Amazon for $12.64.
12. A High-Energy Organic Snack
By now your morning sickness should be yesterday’s news. (Or at least not a regular occurrence, we hope.) After feeling nauseated during your first trimester, you may be surprised to find that during your second, you are hungry all.of.the.time.
Fight that pregnancy hanger with Pure Organic Fruit and Nut Bars. They’re quick, mess-free, and easy to toss into your purse or gym bag. And they are delicious! Each bar is made from sweet fruit, nuts, and spices, and they come in a great variety of flavors like banana coconut, wild berry, and dark chocolate berry (um, yum). They’re also certified organic, non-GMO, and vegan, and don’t contain any gluten or soy. Get them on Amazon for $34.99.
13. A Mama-to-Be’s BFF
If there’s one thing we learned from 40 weeks of pregnancy, it’s this: Leggings are a pregnant mama’s best friend. We can’t say it enough. Leggings are the best, most comfortable and most versatile piece of maternity wear you can invest in during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. (Who are we kidding, mamas? We’re still rocking our leggings and we have a toddler!) You can dress them up, dress them down, and even work out in them.
We recommend investing in a few pairs, but start with these buttery soft and stretchy Mothers Essentials Maternity Leggings. They’re seamless, which we absolutely love for the all-around comfort factor. They offer just enough—but not too much—compression support, and they’re moisture wicking to keep you cool during those pregnancy sweats. They’re also affordable, so you can totally stock up. What’s not to love? (Pro tip: We found that these leggings run a bit large, so you may want to consider sizing down.) Get them on Amazon for $13.95 and up.
14. Support for Those Sleepless Nights
Even though there are so many things going right during your second trimester, there are a few challenges along the way. The sometimes elusive sleep is one of the most common. As your belly grows, it may get harder and harder to find a comfy sleeping position, especially if you were a stomach sleeper in your pre-pregnancy life.
The Snoogle may have a funny name, but there’s nothing funny about this awesome pillow. It’s basically a support for your entire body. You won’t have to construct a pillow fort around yourself to find some relief. (We’ve tried it, and it’s not pretty!) The Snoogle is large enough to wrap around and support whatever parts need it most, including your back, neck, hips, and belly. It even has a removable cover that you can easily throw in the wash when it starts getting a little funky. Get it on Amazon for $59.99.
15. Your Own Personal Blackout Shade
While we’re on the subject of sleep, we also recommend another must-have for getting the most of your eight hours. Even if you’ve never had a problem falling asleep, pregnancy may change all that. This silky sleep mask can help.
Sleep masks are great for blocking out light and providing the darkness your body needs to enter into sleep. If you’re tossing and turning throughout the night, this might be the easy, affordable option you need to get more rest. We love this one because it’s made of all-natural silk and comes in a few cute colors and patterns, so you won’t scare your partner too much. Get it on Amazon for $7.99.
16. A Wear-Anywhere LBD
What leggings are to athleisure, the LB(maternity)D is to pregnancy fashion. Every pregnant mama should have a simple, comfortable little black dress in her closet. It’s a versatile staple for work, a night out, or even an afternoon in the park.
We love this ruched style from Liu & Qu for its fashion and its function. The tailored but stretchy fit will hug your bump in all the right places, and the simple ruching gives it a bit of detail without being too overwhelming. It’s incredibly affordable, so you won’t even need to splurge. And if you’re looking for a pop of color, there are 18 to choose from! Get it on Amazon for $19.99 and up.
17. A Little Light Reading—French Style
Since you may not feel like diving headfirst into parenting books quite yet, the bestselling Bringing Up Bébé is the perfect combination of narrative and advice, written in a funny, warm, and engaging voice. (Plus, we are always on board for learning more about how the French make everything seem so fabulous and effortless, even when it comes raising kids!)
We loved this book for opening our eyes to how another culture tackles parenting and how that stacked up against our American ideals. Whether you’ll agree with the French parenting philosophies isn’t the point—it’s more about having fun taking a peek into what it’s like to be a mom somewhere else in this great big world. Get it on Amazon for $14.40.
18. A Worthwhile Splurge
If you’re going to splurge on one item in your maternity wardrobe, we think it should be denim. Less is really more here; instead of buying three or four cheaper pairs that may wear and stretch before baby even arrives, we recommend investing in one good pair of jeans that can go the distance.
These skinny jeans from Paige are some of the most amazing we’ve tried. The dark wash and slim legs make them perfect for a day at the office or a night out with friends. We love the way the full-coverage panel shapes and supports our bump, and the denim holds up really well even after lots of washes. We know these are a bit of a splurge, but we truly think they’re worth it. Treat yourself, mama! Get them on Amazon for $189.00.
19. A Maternity Wardrobe Must-Have
There are a few pieces of maternity wear that we absolutely cannot live without, and this is one of them. Ingrid & Isabel’s Everyday Cami will quickly become a go-to during your second trimester. Think of it as a hug for your growing belly! It has just the right amount of stretch to smooth and shape your bump, providing the all-around support you need during your second trimester and beyond. (It’s perfect for postpartum wear, too.)
We love layering it with other tops, throwing it on under a cardigan, or even wearing it on its own while we’re lounging around the house. And the seamless design and soft fabric mean you’ll never have to worry about it being uncomfortable. Get it on Amazon for $28.00.
20. Comfy Coverage Down Under
Your belly isn’t the only thing that grows during your second trimester. Lots of women experience other body changes, especially in the hip and thigh area. And these changes may mean your regular undies just aren’t doing the job anymore.
If your underwear starts bunching, riding up, or rolling down, it may mean it’s time to invest in some maternity-specific styles. These 100 percent cotton Giftpocket Under Bumps are some of our faves. The crossover V design fits perfectly under your growing belly, and the back provides ample coverage for your rear without feeling like you’re wearing granny panties. We also love the cute assortment of colors and patterns. The sizing is pretty specific for these, though (and may not match up with your pre-pregnancy size), so be sure to check out the size chart and measure to ensure you get the right fit. Get them on Amazon for $9.99 and up.
21. Overnight Support Where You Need It Most
If it seems like your chest is growing just as fast as your baby bump, it’s probably time to start thinking about a sleep bra. For some women, going to bed without a bra isn’t an issue. But for lots of us—and especially as pregnancy progresses—a little extra overnight support for the ladies goes a long way.
The Kindred Bravely French Terry Sleep Bra is the ideal combination of softness and support. It’s not too tight, but it’s just tight enough. The wide shoulder straps and stretchy elastic band keep the bra securely in place without it being constrictive. And if you plan on breastfeeding, the low cut, v-style design makes this the perfect overnight nursing bra, so you’ll be able to continue wearing it after you welcome your little one. Get it on Amazon for $17.95 and up.
22. Relief for Your Aching Back
You knew it was too good to be true…there had to be at least some downsides to the second trimester of pregnancy, right? You may be loving your growing bump, but your back probably isn’t. The unfortunate reality of carrying around more weight on the daily often leads to sore hips, pelvis, back, and belly.
Maternity belts can offer lots of relief but are often bulky and cumbersome. That’s not the case with the Azmed Maternity Belt, which is why we love it. Its streamlined design and simple wrap style means it’s easy to pop on under your clothes, soft and breathable, and still does a great job of providing just enough compression to support your bump. We can almost hear you breathing that sigh of relief from here. Get it on Amazon for $23.92.
Third Trimester
You’ve made it to the home stretch! Only a few more months to go until you’re cuddling your newest addition. The third trimester is a time filled with excitement, anticipation, and probably some anxiety and discomfort, too. You’re carrying around a lot of baby at this point, so it’s totally normal to feel tired and sore. Now’s the time to take care of you, mom-to-be, so we’ve chosen some of our favorite self-care products to get you through these final weeks. You’re also likely thinking ahead to your delivery by now, so we’re also sharing what we loved to help you have your best birth.
23. For Your Special Day
It’s easy to get caught up in everything your little one is going to need—but what about you? If you’re having a baby shower, a sip and see, or just need to remind yourself of how cute you look rocking your baby bump, it’s about time you treat yourself to this maternity maxi dress from Mother Bee.
Easy to wear, super comfortable, and ultra flattering on any body type, this flowy maternity dress definitely deserves a spot in your closet. (Or two spots, since it’s incredibly affordable.) We love the colorblock design and all the different styles (there are tons of colors and florals to choose from). It’s just right on its own on warmer days or paired with a cardigan when it gets a bit chilly. Get it on Amazon for $24.99.
24. For Those Aching Feet (and Back…and Hips…and Body)
We never said the third trimester was easy, did we? (But we can assure you it’s worth it in the end!) For the ultimate in relaxation, add some Pink Stork Flakes to your next bath or foot soak. We promise you’ll thank us later.
Made from organic magnesium, these bath flakes help your body relax and give it the added dose of energy and hydration it needs, especially during those last few months of pregnancy. Also, do you really need an excuse to sit in the tub or to soak your feet for a half hour or so? We didn’t think so. Get them on Amazon for $15.99.
25. For a Little Me Time
Since you’ve now remembered how rejuvenating a bath can be, fire up some Netflix and drop a few of these delicious Oliver Rocket Bath Bombs in the water the next time you hit the tub. With six scents to choose from, including cucumber melon, grapefruit tangerine, and black raspberry vanilla, they’ll add just the right about of fizz—and fun—to your next soak.
We love that each bath bomb is handmade and is larger than some others we’ve used before, meaning more fizzy soaking time for you. And you won’t have to worry about harmful chemicals, either; all the bombs are completely natural and made from ingredients like baking soda, sea salt, and shea butter. Get them on Amazon for $16.95.
26. Soothing, Nourishing Stretch Mark Relief
We like to think of our stretch marks as proof as to just how awe-inspiring our bodies can be during pregnancy. Sometimes, though, they can get a little itchy due to quickly expanding skin, and you may need a little relief.
Earth Mama Belly Oil to the rescue. This herb-infused oil not only feels luxurious on your skin, but it also moisturizes to provide a reprieve from any itching you might be experiencing. And it contains no artificial fragrance, parabens, or anything else that you wouldn’t feel okay about using on your skin. We love it for our bellies, hips, thighs, and chest. Get it on Amazon for $14.99.
27. For When Nothing Else Fits
Tight, restrictive clothing is the last thing you’ll want to deal with during those final few months of pregnancy. Finding clothes that are comfortable and flattering during your third trimester can be a bit of a challenge, but this floral kimono checks both of those boxes in a super stylish way.
Available in four gorgeous prints, this lightweight covering pairs well with just about anything in your closet, from leggings to jeans and beyond. The flowy design will keep you cool and comfortable all day long, and it makes a great postpartum piece, too—it’s perfect for nursing or as part of your hospital going-home outfit. Get it on Amazon for $15.99 and up.
28. A (Fun) Way to Relax
Remember when you used to use an exercise ball for doing sit-ups? (Insert your pre-pregnancy self laughing hysterically here.) Turns out these versatile exercise balls are great for a whole lot more than just crunches.
Short of floating in a pool all day (which also doesn’t sound like such a bad idea), exercise balls are the best way we’ve found to relieve all the lower body pressure that comes along with pregnancy. Bouncing on one slowly is not just fun; it does an amazing job of taking all that belly weight off your back and joints. This one is available in a range of sizes and comes with a foot pump for easy inflation. It also makes a great birth ball if that’s something you’re interested in trying out during your labor. Get it on Amazon for $10.99 and up.
29. Not Your Grandma’s Compression Socks
Nothing says third trimester like swollen ankles, huh? One of the less glamorous side effects of pregnancy, swelling is an uncomfortable way your body deals with all that extra fluid you’re now carrying around, especially during those last few months. Time to rock some compression socks, mama!
Although they may not be the cutest fashion accessory you’ll wear all season, we love these Physix Gear Compression Socks because they actually work. Compression socks help with blood circulation, varicose veins, and leg swelling. Especially if you’re going to be on your feet a lot during the last trimester of pregnancy, these socks are a must. Get them on Amazon for $10.00 and up.
30. A Multipurpose Accessory (That You’ll Actually Want to Wear!)
As soon as you become a mama, you’ll soon see that products that do double—or even triple—duty are totally the way to go. That’s why we love this 5-in-1 cover from Copper Pearl. For now, it makes a great scarf, adding a fun pop of detail to any outfit. But once baby arrives? It’s also a car seat cover, nursing scarf, shopping seat cover, and high chair cover. Genius!
The rayon fabric is soft and stretchy, and there are so many great patterns and prints to choose from that you’re going to have serious trouble picking just one. Get it on Amazon for $24.95.
31. For When You Really Need to Catch Some ZZZs
If you haven’t figured it out already, sleep—or the lack thereof—is a common struggle during pregnancy. By the time you hit your third trimester, you may be having a lot of trouble falling asleep and staying asleep throughout the night.
The Dohm sound machine can help. It creates a rushing air noise like no other sound machine we’ve ever heard—and we absolutely love it. It’s just what we need to help us relax, especially after a long day. And you’ll want to keep it on hand for after baby arrives, too; sound machines are great for helping to recreate the sounds of the womb and soothe little ones to sleep. Get it on Amazon for $49.93.
32. To Help You Breathe a Little Easier
While we’re still on the topic of sleep, you may be noticing that you’re feeling especially congested throughout your pregnancy, especially in the final weeks. It’s not uncommon, and it’s nothing to worry about, but it can make sleeping especially difficult.
Start running the Pure Enrichment Cool Mist Humidifier each night for some immediate relief. This quiet, easy-to-clean ultrasonic humidifier will safely moisturize the air for up to 16 hours, helping you breathe just a little easier. It even has a built-in nightlight for those all-too-frequent nightly bathroom trips! Get it on Amazon for $39.99 and up.
33. For Soft, Glowing Skin
We know what you’re thinking, “A snail facial? Nope.” But just trust us on this one, okay? We promise your pregnant skin will never look better!
Known for its natural restorative properties—and beloved in South Korea for centuries—snail secretion will work wonders on your complexion, especially if you’re feeling extra tired during those last few weeks of pregnancy. Try this bestselling Snail Jelly Facial Mask and treat yourself to a little self-care! Get it on Amazon for $17.95.
34. For a Stylish—and Comfortable—Delivery Day
If the thought of giving birth in a stiff, oversized hospital gown doesn’t sound like something you want to test out, you’re not alone. Lots of mamas-to-be are rocking their own delivery gowns lately, and we’re totally behind the trend.
Gownies are not just stylish; they’re also comfy and practical. They snap down the back for complete coverage and open easily from the front for skin-to-skin time or breastfeeding. They also help you look great in photos, which we realize probably isn’t the most important part of your delivery day, but it can’t hurt, right? Get it on Amazon for $29.99 and up.
35. A Portable Massager
If you have a partner who likes to give massages, now is the time to ask for one, mamas. (And even if you don’t, you should still ask for one!) Third trimester aches and pains can be rough, but a little massage goes a long way. These Kieba Massage Balls are game changers.
These balls are just the right firmness to work out knots and soothe tired muscles. We love them on our lower and upper back, outer thighs, and of course our very pregnant feet. Simply lean on them and massage away. Ahhh… Get them on Amazon for $9.99.
36. For Smoothing and Shaping
If you’re needing a bit more support heading into your third trimester, we totally feel you. Your body is going through so many changes, especially as your due date approaches, and sometimes, a little extra smoothing and shaping helps you to feel more confident throughout the day.
For light compression and smoothing support, we love Belevation Maternity Shapewear. It offers just the right amount of compression and comfort, and it’s great under form-fitting clothing and for preventing thigh chafing. The stretchy fabric leaves plenty of room for your growing bump, too. Get it on Amazon for $20.50 and up.
37. For Those Chilly (and Slippery!) Hospital Floors
Hospitals are notorious for having cold, slippery floors—and the last thing you need to worry about on delivery day is taking a spill! Cozy, grippy socks will not only keep you warm, but they’ll also prevent you from slipping when you’re walking around your room.
Goodwyn Goods Non Skid Socks are our choice not just for your hospital stay but for lounging around at home too. They’re made from a blend of cotton, spandex, and polyester, making them stretchy yet sturdy. The non-slip bottoms do a great job of gripping the floor and keeping you on your toes (literally). Get them on Amazon for $6.99.
38. A Mega Time Saver
The last must-have on our list is a product that you’ll be able to use now and for years to come. And it will save you time and money, two things that are often in very short supply once you have little ones!
The Instant Pot is a culinary game changer. It’s a slow cooker, pressure cooker, rice cooker, and saute/steamer all in one. And even cooking isn’t your thing, there are so many easy recipes available that are virtually impossible to mess up. We recommend powering through a few freezer-friendly meals pre-baby so you’ll be all stocked up during those first few months. Get it on Amazon for $59.92 and up.
Pregnancy comes with a lot of worrying, much of it unwarranted but natural and—dare I say?—unavoidable. But a few things are actually worth knowing about, if not actively worrying about. One of those things is preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication that causes high blood pressure and protein in the urine, and it needs immediate attention. Why? Left untreated, it can lead to kidney and liver failure, stroke, seizures, and maternal death and/or stillbirth. It is therefore important to be aware of the symptoms so you can spring into action quickly if you sense that something is off.
What is preeclampsia?
“Honestly, most of us are still trying to figure this out!” says Kerry Price, MD, an OB-GYN at Orange Coast Women’s Medical Group in Orange County, California. “It is the number one thing … that [OB-GYNs] still need a definite cause for, and discovering its cause is one of the most researched topics in our field.” Here’s what doctors believe: Preeclampsia is a disorder of the vessels in the placenta that causes increased resistance. This increases pressure gradients, which causes maternal blood pressure to rise and puts greater demands on the vital organs. In short, the problem is in the placenta—which is why delivery is the cure.
[pullquote align=”center”]Never doubt that you know your body best and continue to seek out the best medical attention you can find.[/pullquote] High blood pressure caused by preeclampsia can come on slowly over time or very suddenly, which is why your OB checks your urine and blood pressure at every single visit and why it’s important for pregnant women to be aware of all the symptoms. That said: The condition can be treated and managed—how effectively is really a question of how early it is diagnosed and how close the mother is to delivery.
How common is preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia affects between 3 and 10 percent of pregnancies. In fact, it’s one of the most common complications of pregnancy. Price says she’s seeing a rise in cases in the U.S. due to two main factors:
The average age of mothers is on the rise. In other words, more women are having babies at age 35 and older.
More women are overweight and obese—and these are both risk factors for preeclampsia.
Signs and Symptoms of Preeclampsia
You know how your urine is tested at every single doctor’s visit? Preeclampsia is one of the things she’s testing for. (We know it’s annoying, but so, so necessary!) At your 20-week appointment—and then at every other subsequent visit—your OB will likely go over the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia with you, but it’s good to keep them in mind for yourself, too. Here’s what to look out for:
A headache that is not responsive to rest, Tylenol, or fluids
Blurred vision
Epigastric and right upper quadrant abdominal pain
Swelling of the hands and face
General malaise
Fluid in the lungs
Signs of kidney trouble
A seizure, which is a very late-onset symptom that would actually mean a woman has moved from preeclampsia to eclampsia
Women who got pregnant via in vitro fertilization (IVF), donor insemination, or egg donation
One very important point: Women of color—especially African American women—are more likely to develop preeclampsia. According to a recent feature story in The New York Times Magazine, their symptoms are often ignored by medical professionals, causing a range of medical complications, including stillbirth. Never doubt that you know your body best and continue to seek out the best medical attention you can find.
Diagnosing Preeclampsia
In order to be diagnosed with preeclampsia, a woman needs to show signs of two things:
Elevated blood pressure: This means 140 or higher systolic, and 90 or higher diastolic, so 140/90 or higher. Ideal blood pressure is less than 120/80.
Proteinuria, or protein in the urine
You can have elevated blood pressure and not have preeclampsia, and you can spill protein in your urine and not have it. You need both to be diagnosed. Price explains that there are varying stages of preeclampsia: mild preeclampsia and preeclampsia with severe features. These are indicative of a more serious disease state. “The gold standard for any evaluation is a 24-hour urine protein collection, which can be done as an outpatient or inpatient depending on the severity of the patient’s condition,” Price explains. That said, high blood pressure at one appointment does not mean you have preeclampsia! This is why your doctor will probably test your blood pressure again four hours later and monitor you closely for at least 24 hours and for the remainder of the pregnancy.
Treating Preeclampsia
If you are experiencing any of the signs or symptoms above, you should contact your doctor’s office immediately and ask for an evaluation. If your OB’s office is closed, Price advises going to labor and delivery for an evaluation or speaking to your doctor’s on-call physician to see if an evaluation is warranted. “A patient should never wait hours or days to contact her physician about this,” Price says, “because if preeclampsia is truly there, time is of the essence.” Treating preeclampsia depends entirely on the severity of the symptoms and the gestational age of the fetus. Milder cases and those closer to term might not necessitate hospitalization or a super-early delivery. These are most often treated with frequent outpatient visits, blood pressure medication, and non-stress testing with amniotic fluid checks. Bed rest doesn’t help with preeclampsia.
[pullquote align=”center”]“A patient should never wait hours or days to contact her physician about this because if preeclampsia is truly there, time is of the essence.”
—Kerry Price, MD[/pullquote] More severe cases require IV antihypertensive medications, inpatient hospital admission, and more continuous monitoring of the baby. Your doctor is trying to prevent the condition from causing a stroke, fetal abruption, seizures, or severe bleeding. The baby will undergo more monitoring as well: non-stress tests and frequent ultrasounds. That said, if you are diagnosed with preeclampsia, you will not deliver your baby any later than 37 weeks—it’s simply not safe for you or the baby. More severe cases require preterm delivery to save both mom and baby from the worse outcomes, which can include brain damage or death. This is what makes preeclampsia so tricky: The only “cure” is delivering the baby. An OB’s goal is to keep the mother and baby safe for as long as possible—and not push it a moment longer.
Preventing Preeclampsia
There is no way to definitively prevent preeclampsia, but there are ways of improving your odds of staying healthy throughout your pregnancy. Though you should always consult your own physician, here are Price’s recommendations:
For Women at High Risk
As soon as you find out you’re pregnant, take a daily 81 mg dose of aspirin. This has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of developing preeclampsia.
For Women Planning to Get Pregnant (Who Have Risk Factors)
Work on getting to a healthy weight and have any chronic medical conditions (elevated blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, lupus, etc.) under control.
For Women Without Risk Factors
Make sure you exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and avoid excess weight gain during pregnancy. Excess weight gain is linked to gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes, both of which are risk factors for preeclampsia.
Can preeclampsia come on suddenly?
“Yes it can, which is very scary and why your OB is constantly on the lookout!” Price says.
Can preeclampsia occur before 20 weeks?
In short, no. The longer answer is a little more complex. “While there are case reports out there of an earlier diagnosis, there is almost always a very significant underlying medical condition, so it is not a true diagnosis of preeclampsia,” Price explains. If your blood pressure is high before 20 weeks, it probably indicates chronic hypertension (usually diagnosed if your blood pressure is significantly elevated in the first trimester) or another underlying medical condition
How does preeclampsia affect mom?
If the case is mild and managed well, preeclampsia is mostly just uncomfortable and annoying—there are the symptoms (headaches, etc.) and all the trips to the hospital for frequent checkups. If the case is severe, you can develop HELLP syndrome, which is dysfunction and/or a shutting down of the kidneys and liver. This can lead to uncontrolled bleeding, stroke, and death. Preeclampsia can also evolve into eclampsia, which involves seizures. These can cause brain damage because of lack of oxygen and aspiration pneumonia if vomit winds up in the lungs. Again, this is in very severe and unmonitored cases. The long and short of it is: If you suspect something is wrong, contact your doctor immediately.
Does preeclampsia affect my baby?
Yes. The baby is affected because preeclampsia is a placental issue. “The main fetal effects we see are growth restriction and low amniotic fluid volumes,” Price explains. “This can lead to significant developmental issues, especially if this happens earlier in gestation.” If preeclampsia develops at term and is diagnosed in a timely manner, the baby is usually unaffected and does very well—which is what makes accurate and timely diagnosis very important. “This is why we dip people’s urine at every visit!” Price says.
Is preeclampsia hereditary?
Nope. So just because your mom or grandmother had it doesn’t mean you will.
Here’s a secret most experienced moms will tell you: You really don’t need a lot of gear. We promise! In the very beginning, you need very few essentials: diapers and wipes, a stroller and/or car seat, a carrier, onesies, and burp clothes. Seriously. The rest is all extra. But! It’s always good to have extra stuff, and eventually almost all of it becomes necessary.
Baby Checklist Part 1: The Absolute Essentials
Make sure to have these on hand before the baby arrives.
Diapers
Most companies now offer a subscription package so you don’t have to think about it each month. (See Honest here!) Do NOT go crazy on the newborn diapers. She may outgrow them really quickly and then you’ll have way too many teeny tiny diapers on your hands.
Burp Cloths
Any old thing will do, really, so hand-me-downs are great here. But you can also go for gorgeous ones that double as swaddle blankets, like these from aden + anais.
Baby Carrier
A few mom faves: The Baby K’tan, the Ergobaby (with infant insert, which I will say is hot in the summer), or the Moby Wrap. Before you buy anything, borrow from a friend. You might spend a few days in agony, or you might be really happy and comfortable. It’s worth doing some investigating before investing.
Car Seat
It’s best to stay on top of Consumer Reports since the guidelines for car seats change all the time. (In fact, what you use for one kid might not be okay for the next!) But some very reliable seats are the Graco SnugRide Click Connect and the Safety 1st Grow and Go 3-in-1 car seat. [products ids=’1006955,1006960,1006962,1006965,1006968,1006978,1006984,1007015′ type=full]
Stroller
This depends a lot on your particular circumstances. If you’re in a city where you walk far more than you drive, you’ll want something robust, like the Bugaboo, City Mini or UPPAbaby Vista.
Wipes
You do not need them to be warmed (really), but it helps to have a dispenser, so you can pull them out with one hand.
Bottles
Now if you’re planning to breastfeed, you may not need these. But if you’re planning to pump at all (or you’re going with formula), these are a must-have. Most will do—the baby has to like the feel of the nipple—but if you want to go eco-friendly, try a Philips AVENT Glass Bottle (don’t forget the sleeve!) or Lifefactory Glass Bottles. (So many cute colors!) [products ids=’1007018,1007023,1007026′ type=full] [products ids=’1007032,1007037,1007045,1007050′ type=full]
This can be a machine you buy for the baby or just an app on your phone that plays all sorts of sounds, from a washing machine to a rainfall. Either way, the white noise will be your new best friend. This puppy saved my life! No more boiling water and dipping in nipples. Wash them, put them in, press “start”—and done!
Pacifier
Not all babies are into these (my daughter wouldn’t take one). And they can be controversial (some point out that babies eventually need to be weaned, while others claim it’s not great for their teeth), but in those early months it can be a lifesaver. Try this eco-friendlyoption. [products ids=’1007109,1007112,1007120,1007123,1007127,1007130,1007133′ type=full]
Baby Checklist Items for Around the House
Baby Monitor
How big is your house or apartment? Ours was so small there was absolutely zero need for a monitor. (Babies can scream, have you heard?) But if you want to keep an eye on the little one, you have plenty of choices, from low-tech to very high. The latest is an Alexa baby monitor and speaker.
Co-Sleeper
If your little one isn’t content in her crib, try something like the Halo Bassinest to keep her close—without worrying you’ll roll over her.
Bouncer
How much do you want to do? If you’re okay with bouncing the chair yourself, go with the BabyBjörn Bouncer. Unlike so much other baby stuff, it won’t be an eyesore in the middle of the living room. If you want all the bells and whistles, go for the mamaRoo4. You can control it with your phone!
Diaper Pail
Trust me, you’re going to want one of these. And don’t forget the bags. Running out is the worst. [products ids=’1007142,1007147,1007152′ type=full] [products ids=’1007154,1007156′ type=full]
Changing Station
Set it up so it makes sense for you—everything within reach. You can go really streamlined or really fancy, but the point is that you develop a system that works for you. I loved having the changing table as part of a dresser—major space saver. Whatever you choose, you’ll need a pad too.
A Good Nursing Chair
This can be a glider or just something you’re happy sitting in for hours. I was comfortable on the IKEA Poang. Basically you want to make sure you find something with armrests, because those arms will get realllllllly tired.
Lots and Lots of Pillows
You can get special nursing pillows (more below), but you can also just pile up a bunch of pillows you already have. They really do help with nursing.
Baby Bathtub
It’s not easy bending over the tub. You can set this sucker on the counter or in the bathtub without having to worry about the baby slipping out of your arms. [products ids=’1007158,1007161,1007164′ type=full] [products ids=’1007167,1007169,1007171′ type=full]
Those nips are going to need some love. Keep it near you at all times.
Pads
For your vagina and for your boobs. Your vagina will probably need overnight pads for a long while. If you have leaky boobs, they will love these washable, eco-friendly nursing pads.
Hospital-Grade Breast Pump (or Something Close)
There are so many breast pumps on the market these days. The old reliable is the Medela; the Pump in Style is a good go-to. If you want something more discreet, the new Willow Pump is sort of incredible.
Yoga balls are ideal for bouncing the baby when she won’t. stop. crying. It’ll keep your arms and legs from getting tired, plus it can do double duty when you get back to your flow.
Food Delivery
Anything! Have your friends set up a meal train delivery. Ask your parents or friends to cook ahead of time. Cook and freeze meals before you go into labor. Chances are you won’t have the time, energy, or desire to cook for a while.
Nice Soap and Shampoo
No real reason for this, but you need to feel good, too. Treat yourself, mama—you’ll need it. [products ids=’1007180,1007182,1007184′ type=full] [products ids=’1007193,1007187,1007190′ type=full]
Motherhood isn’t easy, but it can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. When a newborn is placed into a mother’s arms for the first time, she can experience a range of different emotions—including an overwhelming sense of euphoria. For some women, the feeling, which can linger throughout the first year of a child’s life, has a chance of becoming an addiction.
One of the more famous cases for this is Nadya Suleman, otherwise known as “Octomom.” After giving birth to 14 children, she admitted in a 2011 interview with Oprah Winfrey that it became a type of addiction.
“I felt like a watering can with holes in it. In my delusional mind, the more I give to them, the more of me is leaking out,” she said. “When it’s empty I go back. ‘Doctor, one more.'” Some critics go as far as to call irresponsibly having children a symptom of “Octomom syndrome.”
Watching Octomom on Oprah. I guess you can be addicted to ANYTHING. Baby addict?! Wow!
But this isn’t the case for every woman. U.S. fertility rates are at an all-time low, and middle children are becoming rarer; according to a 2016 Pew Research Center report, American mothers between the ages of 40 and 44 had an average of 2.07 children, slightly up from the record low in 2006 (1.86) but still a whole 1.02 fewer than in 1976. With the landscape of the American family continually shifting, it’s a real possibility that large families may become a thing of the past—or could they just be getting started?
I read that the middle child is becoming extinct, so I guess you could say I’m an endangered species.
The emotions of motherhood can manifest in many different ways. For some, the newborn stage is full of warm, fuzzy feelings of being needed by the infant. For other women, it can be a difficult experience of sleep deprivation and endless cries. A woman’s urge to have another child soon after giving birth, even when she—or her family—may not be ready, can occur for a variety of reasons.
Can you really be addicted to babies?
The answer isn’t as simple as it sounds. Some people want a large family and know they can provide for each member; others have additional children without being able to devote the same love and care to older children in the family.
“An addiction is something that is out of control and substituting for something that you need to find inside of yourself,” says Gayle Peterson, a San Francisco-based licensed clinical social worker who specializes in family development. “If a woman really wants to have another child and just loves babies but is really good with her other children and able to mother the ones she has, that’s more of a bigger family concept.”
Then there’s the alternative.
“If you begin having more children for selfish reasons, or because you are bored with your older children, or you are not giving them what they need but still want another baby no matter what, then that likely could be the sign of an addiction,” Peterson says.
If a woman already has children and is considering growing her brood, Peterson says, it’s important to look at the factors driving her to make this choice.
Jessica Zucker, a clinical psychologist specializing in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health, echoes Peterson’s sentiments. Throughout her professional career, Zucker has spoken with women who want another baby to nurture because their previous children are now older and don’t need them as much anymore. For this reason, Zucker, like Peterson, feels it is important to explore the reason behind a woman’s feelings on this topic.
“When someone is considering having another child, it’s important to evaluate where these desires are coming from—is it to fill a void? Is the desire to expand the family well thought out?”
iStock.com/HalfpointZucker says these feelings can also stem from the lack of a passion or purpose, as well as feeling disconnected and that a baby may bring meaning back into their lives.
“A lot of people will try for more children with this imaginative idea of who the baby may be,” she says. “We have no control over the baby we get, so it is important to evaluate the situation and look within yourself to figure out where the desire is coming from.”
For some, it’s a desire, not an addiction.
For Jennifer Bush, the overwhelming feelings of wanting another child are different. Bush and her husband were unable to conceive on their own and turned to fertility treatments to help bring their two sons into the world. After her treatments, Bush was left with three healthy embryos—a part of the process that she never considered.
“We have three embryos that are sitting on ice,” says Bush, who lives in Tampa, Florida. “I mistakenly asked the gender of the other three embryos, and now I know there is a girl in there. That really weighs heavily on my mind—that there are these three children we could potentially have.”
Because she knows it’s likely her last baby, Bush is soaking up the moments with her 11-month-old son while she can. She is also the mom of a 4-year-old boy.
“I love waking up to them, putting them to bed, taking them to school,” Bush says. “My youngest just started sleeping through the night. I didn’t even mind getting up and feeding him in the middle of the night because I know it’s probably my last baby.”
The nostalgia is already setting in, and Bush is mindful to be present in all areas of parenting her infant son.
“The things that used to bother me with the first one, now I just kind of let it roll off my back,” says Bush. “You want to have a schedule—and we do, but I think I let more go because he’s the second.”
Even during the hectic mornings of getting ready for work, Bush sets time aside to spend with each child, singing silly songs, letting her youngest feed until he’s smiling and cooing.
“You have a different closeness with a baby. They come to you when they are hungry. You are their only source of just about everything for those first six months,” she says. “I just try to make the most of every day, because when people say, ‘My kids are so annoying’—which they are for every parent—but if I could only have that annoying child. It’s a completely different perspective and appreciation when you have wanted it for so long, and when you finally get it, you don’t want to say anything along the lines of, ‘Why did I even do this?’”
Considering the Future
The transition to motherhood can be a vulnerable time for a woman’s emotional and mental well-being, according to a study conducted by researchers in the Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford. Before bringing another baby into the picture, Zucker encourages women to think about what the future looks like when adding another child to the mix—including a mom’s mental keenness.
“The idea of being loved, wanted, and needed may be a strong desire for people for a variety of reasons—perhaps based on personal or family history,” says Zucker. “We need to be mindful of our own readiness before making such a life-changing decision to undertake motherhood.”
Zucker also invites families to think about the long-term implications that bringing a human into the world might mean. How it will impact your lifestyle, your relationships, your finances, and the existing children in your family?
“It’s one thing to think babies are sweet and cuddly, and it’s another thing to actually be ready to raise a human being,” Zucker says. “People should keep in mind the phases that follow infancy. Soon, babies become toddlers and dynamics become more challenging.”
Finances and demanding job schedules are just a couple of the reasons keeping Bush and her husband from moving forward with her leftover embryos. While Bush recognizes that a third child doesn’t seem to be in the cards for her family right now, the longing to bring another baby into the family is there.
“If we had a million dollars, we would definitely have another baby, but kids are expensive and my husband and I both work really long hours,” says Bush. “We don’t have a lot of downtime.”
Peterson advises caution when considering the motives behind having additional children when a woman isn’t ready and urges parents to consider the impact it can have on a family. In larger families with upwards of eight or nine children, she says the older siblings may get saddled with parenting responsibilities that they are not mentally prepared to take on.
“Clinically, what happens is you may get a woman who is in her 40s who does not have children,” says Peterson. “When you talk to her, you find out that, because she was so burdened as a child and really did a lot of the mothering to her younger siblings, [she] may be less likely to feel like they can parent because of these inadequate experiences from childhood.”
Making It Work for Your Family
Whether you have one child or six kids, motherhood is an exhausting, but worthwhile, adventure. From the newborn stages to the teenage years, most parents will tell you that the days are long, but the years are short. As a mom of two kids, I know that letting go and watching them turn into their own little people is one of the hardest, yet rewarding, parts of parenthood.
For now, women like Bush, who still yearn for more children, are savoring the sweet moments of the younger years with her kids while looking forward to the future and watching herself and her children grow together.
“It’s so much fun at every stage and goes by so much faster with the [linkbuilder id=”6835″ text=”second child”],” says Bush, whose second son is hitting milestones like crawling sooner than her first.
“With my second child, I’m kind of old school in the sense that I want time to slow down. But it’s fun to watch him grow, and I love to watch my two kids together. When they smile at each other and laugh, that’s the best thing ever.”
All I knew about kids’ bath products before I had a child was that littles smell more delicious after a bath than anything a Sugar Rush contestant ever created. But after I became a mom, I became obsessed with reading product labels, because I only wanted to use the safest products on my son’s sensitive skin. That’s why I was so excited to hear that Avon’s calling their brand new line of kids’ bath products “100 percent fun and toxin-free”—it sounds right up my alley! And I was even more excited when Avon asked me to try out their new line with my little munchkin. Here’s what I learned after using Avon Kids during bath time this week.

You’d think kids’ skincare products are naturally toxin-free, right?
Not so much. Most personal care products, even those intended for kids and babies, are loosely regulated by the FDA. A lot of icky ingredients, like formaldehyde, are banned from most skincare products in Europe but are still legal for American companies to include in their products. Yikes! That’s why buying toxin-free products for your kids is so important. There’s no set standard for what makes a skincare product toxin-free, but in general, toxin-free means that a product doesn’t contain ingredients that have been linked to toxic reactions in people, such as phthalates and parabens.
Avon Kids is 100 percent fun and toxin-free.
It’s really disheartening to learn that you can’t trust most brands to make safe skincare products for children, which is why these brand new products from Avon Kids are so refreshing. Before I even tried the products, I looked at the ingredients labels: No harsh soaps. No parabens. And definitely no toxins like formaldehyde. To become a regular bath time staple in our house, though, Avon Kids had to face the ultimate challenge: getting a toddler’s seal of approval. So we put these products to the test during bath time over the last week. Here’s what we thought of three of these toxin-free products.
We tried the Soapy Slime Body Cleanser after a particularly messy spaghetti dinner. Kids will love the Soapy Slime Body Cleanser because of its fun texture, but let me tell you, this stuff is the dishwasher liquid of kids’ soaps.
The ultra-thick texture of this cleanser gets rid of the kids’ equivalent of baked-on grime—hardened spaghetti noodles and sauce stains—and it does it fast, minimal scrubbing required.
I was a little skeptical that the Superfoam Body Wash would actually work other foaming washes I’ve used just don’t work as well as regular soaps and body washes. But I was pleasantly surprised by the Superfoam Body Wash!
It actually suds up really well, did a great job getting in my kid’s nooks and crannies, and comes in two delicious scents: Apple Burst and Sea Splash.
My kid has fine hair that tangles easily, so I am always on the hunt for an all-in-one product that promises to clean and detangle his hair. He immediately loved the “very berry” scent (it smells like his berry-flavored medicine, which he’d eat as a treat if he could).
I loved that the Triple Threat Shampoo, Conditioner & Detangler actually did leave his hair clean, soft, and with minimal post-bath tangles to comb out.

There are two other products that I didn’t try in the Avon Kids line, but would love to: Bubble Trouble Bubble Bath and Hocus Pocus Lotion Moisturizer. Like the other products in the Avon Kids line, the bubble bath and moisturizer are gently formulated for kids’ sensitive skin and come in yummy scents like Marshmallow Poof, Sea Splash, and Apple Burst.
[products ids=’1078351,1078348,1078352′ type=full] So, do I recommend Avon Kids? Absolutely. Your kids will love the scents and textures of these bath time products, but you’ll love that Avon Kids truly is 100 percent fun and toxin-free.
