But wouldn’t the world be just a tad more amazing if you didn’t have to wonder whether your workout leggings were going to fit as well in your most intense fitness class as they did in the comfort of the fitting room?

So, which workout leggings are the best for training in the gym?

I’m here to help: I put five pairs of fitness leggings through the wringer, and between bodybuilding splits, Olympic weightlifting workouts, and circuit-style training sessions, the following pairs showed their true colors.
I ended each workout with a journaling sesh detailing my expert insights on factors including snatch-proof stretchability, reliability of the waistband, moisture-wicking technology, and of course aesthetic appeal. From running on streets to jumping over 32” boxes, Athleta delivers with their Up For Anything ⅞ Tight. I wanted a workout legging that I could depend on to get me through the fastest circuits and most grueling leg workouts and was pleasantly surprised by these comfortable and supportive leggings.
The flat waistband fit my body well and did not require any adjustments during my workout. I was also impressed by the way the sleek material wicks away sweat without revealing panty lines.
Slim-fitting and tailored to every inch of my lower body, I was extremely confident sporting these leggings both inside and outside the gym. How often can we say that?

Athleta

Pros

Athleta struck the ideal balance between sturdy compression and comfort with this workout legging. The material fit snugly but didn’t pinch or leave me incapable of enjoying a post-workout meal.
The material was thin enough to feel light during my toughest workouts yet could still hide any hint of cellulite. If you prefer to work out sans underwear, this legging is a great option. And as much as I love my furbaby, I was pleasantly surprised by the way these workout leggings repelled dog hair.
I was so comfortable with these workout leggings that I even tested them out during a power yoga flow at my favorite heated studio. The verdict? My transitions between standing splits and Shiva squats never looked so smooth.

Cons

The one negative aspect I quickly discovered? I only had one pair.

Although the Nike Pro HyperCool Training Tight’s waistband stayed in place better than off-brand pairs I’ve worn, there’s one feature of these workout leggings that can’t be ignored: They become pretty sheer during bends and squats. Overall, these tights functioned well as long as all movements simulating a squat or hip hinge were eliminated from the workout, which is pretty difficult to do when you’re in a fitness class or taking yourself through a rigorous full-body circuit.
As much as I love to see an OG brand alive and well in world of fitness apparel, this legging doesn’t top my list of best workout leggings.

Nike

Pros

The material provided a fair amount of support for the intense workouts I put the leggings through, maintaining shape and quickly drying any hint of moisture. None of my training sessions were interrupted with a feeling of clamminess, nor were they lacking in aesthetic appeal. The meshing was certainly a cute touch, while the black-on-black color scheme will keep any look classic.

Cons

As I mentioned, the waistband of the HyperCool Training Tight does stay in place, but that didn’t stop me from fussing with it throughout my workouts. The waistband is only 1.5 inches wide, compared to the four to six inch waistbands we tend to enjoy in most high-waisted leggings these days. As a result, I felt the band digging into my obliques around the top of the pant. These workout leggings were also prone to bunching.
The thin material did not cooperate with my squats, nor did it fit comfortably around my groin. The material had a tendency to ride up in very inconvenient places. (Just say no to camel toe!) Not only that, but it also contributed to more of a stiff rather than stretchy feeling in terms of compression. Lunging multilaterally wasn’t in the cards.

As expected, lululemon handled my battery of tests well with the Speed Up Tight. My iPhone 6s fit perfectly in one of the side pockets as I hit the gym and jumped right into a hypertrophic leg workout.
The waistband fit like a glove, sitting just below my belly button and refusing to move even a centimeter during my workouts. I was fully supported and felt held-in during every weightlifting, barbell-jerking, GHD-swinging, trail-hiking movement I attempted in these workout leggings.

lululemon

Pros

The thick, silky material of these lululemon tights definitely impressed me. The four-way stretch accommodated every direction of movement, while the moisture-wicking technology ensured the leggings weren’t holding onto any sweat runoff. The fabric didn’t chafe at the seams, catch during intervals on the spin bike, or cling onto fuzz. As long as these leggings are handled with proper care, they’re also fairly anti-pilling—performing for an impressive period of time before showing signs of wear.
When it comes down to it, this will be the pair of leggings I grab on the way to my local CrossFit box.

Cons

As a smaller-framed woman standing at about 5’4” (on my very tallest days), I experienced a bit of fabric bunching around my ankles. While it didn’t inhibit my movement, this may not be the pair for you if you want a fully tailored look (try the Athleta Up For Anything ⅞ Tight instead).
Feeling snug in your leggings is great during a workout, but I was eager to take these off as soon as the training was over. The level of compression was far too much for leisure wear or even yoga. In that sense, there’s a lack of versatility and you may not get as much use out of these legging as you would hope for such a steep price. Bottom line: These workout leggings are an excellent investment for regular gym-goers who are ready to pay up for the compression they provide.

Nike redeemed themselves with these Dri-Fit Capri Training Leggings. The material was fairly similar to the HyperCool Training Tight, but wasn’t sheer in the slightest. Hooray! Unlike many other pairs of crops, these workout leggings were tailored perfectly to the calves and resisted any rolling throughout the various workouts.
If you need ample breathability, this could be your go-to pair. Combining the short length with the delicate meshing made my sweatiest circuits and Bikram yoga flows easy breezy.

Macy’s

Pros

The stretchability and quick-drying technology made even the wildest movements comfortable in these workout leggings. The thin, sleek material hid my seamless undies (required with this pair!) and contributed to a notable anti-pilling effect. I felt safe to jump into the most friction-producing, heart rate–amping spin classes without a moment’s hesitation.

Cons

Similar to the HyperCool Training Tight, the waistband on the Dri-Fit Capri is noticeably narrower than the other pairs of leggings in this cohort. Without going into too much reiteration, I’m not a fan of the resulting fit around my torso.
What the legging had in breathability, it lacked in support. This model of workout legging didn’t have a level of compression comparable to the Athleta Up For Anything ⅞ Tight or lululemon Speed Up Tight. Suffice it to say, I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing these capris during rigorous hours of training, but they work well for a 60-minute class.
The tight was one of the most athletic looking in the bunch. Great for the gym, but not for pairing with your favorite tops or cute kicks. If you’re hoping to take the beautiful deadlifter on the platform next to you out on a last-minute brunch and mimosa date, opt for a pair of date-approved, everyday leggings.

I may be a fan of ZELLA when dropping into my favorite vinyasa flows, but I’m not an advocate for wearing the Live In High Waist Leggings to the gym for higher intensity fitness endeavors.
The fabric resembles a Luon-based lululemon Wunder Under, for anyone who’s familiar. It’s noticeably thicker than the rest of the leggings I tested, with more of a cotton-like feel. For me, these high-waisted leggings are more appropriate for a milder day of bodybuilding (arm day, for example), a pilates class, or even Zumba!

Nordstrom

Pros

The waistband on this pair of workout leggings was outstanding. It sat comfortably right above my belly button and stayed in place throughout hours of wiggling my torso. The thick material provided a cozy feeling of compression across the abdomen that was noticeably different from what I experienced in previous pairs. No digging, no squeezing, no tummy suffocation.
As mentioned previously, the fabric is quite a bit thicker than what I’m used to. It would be perfect for cooler days when you need added warmth without compromising flexibility or integrity.

Cons

The quality of the fabric used for the Live In High Waist Leggings was far too thick to be moisture wicking. It held on to my sweat, which meant I wound up flaunting those wet spots during my workouts.
Because the leggings have a cotton finish, they’re more prone to pilling and clinging, which isn’t ideal. Any high-friction activities like sprinting intervals or CrossFit circuits would certainly not be advised while sporting this pair. Although they can get the job done, they aren’t the best workout leggings to pair with your most grueling gym sesh.

On that note, yes ladies—these are comfortable worn with or without underwear. If you’re a fan of one less layer, these running leggings could be the right fit for you.
The high-rise waistband is, well, high! For someone with a short torso, I found it resting quite comfortably just below my belly button. The feature that took me from like to love!? These leggings have a drawstring.! As someone who struggles to find leggings that fit well around thick quads, round glutes, and small waist, this feature sent me over the moon with excitement! Thanks to the drawstring, there was no wiggling or adjusting necessary during any of my training sessions.

Cons

If you’re a night owl, these running tights may not be for you. While the overall technicality is impressive, the lack of reflective material misses one essential safety mark when it comes to the best leggings for running at night. The material’s sleek finish also requires one important laundering step: air drying. While the Core 10 Run High Waist ⅞ Crop Legging isn’t prone to pilling along the seams, maintaining the integrity of the material means skipping the heated dryer. That said, in my opinion, the benefits of rocking a pair of comfortable and chic running leggings outweigh this small inconvenience.

The detailing doesn’t draw too much attention to the lower leg, and even combined with hints of piping, these workout leggings are refreshingly minimalist and relatively distraction free.
The Nike Pro Dri-Fit Capri boasts four-way stretch material and a moisture-wicking finish, which is perfect for running leggings. Again, I have to emphasize that this is one of the best leggings for running in heat, and if you enjoy chasing your afternoon run with a flow at your local Bikram studio, this crop really works.

If you’re looking for compression that leaves you feeling fully locked-in, set these aside and opt for the lululemon Speed Up Tight. The polyester-spandex blend provides support, but the thin material these running leggings are made of doesn’t compare to the anti-jiggle security of the lululemon pant. The tights are also very athletic looking. Perfect for your run along the boardwalk, but not so much for an early Saturday brunch with your girlfriends.
Although these running tights sit fairly high around the waist, the waistband itself is noticeably thinner than the rest of the running leggings I reviewed. The outcome? Decreased comfort around the midsection and a few necessary re-adjustments during my runs.

They lack the sleek, cool material I want in a running legging and are far too thick to be conducive to my cardio workouts. Still, they might be a good fit for you—so read on for the pros and cons!

The high waist is truly high: In fact it sat just above my belly button, which meant my tummy felt perfectly held-in during my sprints. Another win for these running leggings: There wasn’t any need for adjusting or hurried fixing between my speedy intervals.

Cons

As I mentioned, the material used for these workout leggings is thicker than your average pair. While this is convenient for a yoga flow in a cooled studio space, I don’t recommend them for high-intensity runs, either indoor or out. If you know you’re about to break a sweat, these aren’t the pair for you. The absence of sweat-wicking properties means these leggings have a residual wetness and clamminess following intense training sessions.

As tight as tight can be, the lululemon Speed Up Tight is perfect for your most intense sweat sessions as they stay in place unlike any other workout legging I’ve worn. The silky material is anti-pill, anti-cling, and needed nothing more than a quick dusting to remove the dirt from Mother Earth’s beautiful trails!
I’m also happy to report that this pair is commando-friendly, never riding up—even during sprints. If you don’t prefer to go commando, I suggest wearing seamless underwear to avoid any bunching near the bum and hip area.
The side pocket in this running tight fit my iPhone 6s and held it in place throughout every run (and even a hike). The zippered pocket is the perfect place for a loose key, small wad of cash, or debit card.

Although they have a higher price tag than the other running tights I tested, these leggings are undoubtedly worth the splurge!

Cons

Did I mention these leggings were tight? I thought so. Though their form fit does keep these leggings in place, be wary of the material digging into your obliques. While it certainly wasn’t unbearable, these probably aren’t the ideal athleisure pant to pair with your favorite light sweater for a night out. If you’re after a running legging that you can transform from gym wear to a casual date night outfit, opt for the ZELLA Live In High Waist Leggings instead.

These leggings provide enough support and compression without restricting your ability to, you know, breathe. The ⅞ length is ideal for women with a shorter stature and the Up For Anything Tight is tailored to the calves, so there’s no need to worry about the fabric bunching up around your ankles.
As if that wasn’t enough, these leggings have one more exciting feature that night runners are sure to enjoy. For an added layer of safety, you can roll up the bottoms of these running leggings to reveal reflective detailing. This subtle addition makes these ideal for your nighttime trek.

Cons

It’s hard to find anything negative to say about these running tights. My one critique is that the paneling for the side pockets could have slightly less material as they have a bit of a bulky appearance. Aside from that, these running leggings are as close to perfect as you can get!

Sweat Tested: The Best Leggings For Yoga (And Hot Yoga)

You’ve finally done it. You’ve found the perfect pair of workout leggings with seams that don’t chafe: the holy grail of versatile athleisure aesthetics. Just as you turn to see how the snug fit complements your bum, your worst nightmare flashes across the paneled mirrors—your favorite pair of black workout leggings have deceived you in the form of see-through material! If this struggle sounds all too familiar, I’m here to help.
Searching for the perfect pair of workout leggings can often feel like a daunting task due to the number of options available. With various brands claiming to offer the best product, it can be hard to decipher which pair of pants will actually deliver during a legitimate sweat sesh like a 60-minute vinyasa flow.

Best Leggings for Yoga

Stress no more, my friends! I’ve taken the time to personally test five different pairs of popular workout leggings to determine which options are the best fit for your yoga practice. To help you save time and your hard-earned money, I put these workout leggings to the ultimate yogi challenge by attending one hot, one power, and two vinyasa yoga classes with each pair.
Following each class, I logged my insights on factors including breathability, comfort, the integrity of the waistband, athleisure applications, and the integrity of the material. I celebrate a budget-friendly legging as much as the next yogi, but unfortunately the C9 Freedom High Waist Leggings fell short. The lack of stretch was a key player in the leggings’ downfall due to their sheer material. If I can’t down dog without flashing my polka-dotted cheeky to the woman behind me, the item will certainly not be added to my closet.

Target

Pros

Stranded in a town far from home without your favorite LBL (Little Black Leggings) and desperate for an easy yoga flow? This pair will get the job done in a pinch, without leaving a worrisome dent in your wallet.

Cons

While I may pick them up in the above scenario, they would live in my dresser drawers thereafter. Ultimately, the C9 legging doesn’t offer the stretch, tailoring, or technicality that many women (including myself) search for in the quest for the perfect pair of yoga leggings. The thin black material is prone to pilling and the extra seam of piping down the leg makes the legging a bit itchy and uncomfortable for everyday wear. By the end of a full flow, the legging’s shape and fit were noticeably looser on my body. Bottom line? This one is a pass.

Thanks to a high rise that hits just below the belly button—and the heavenly soft matte material—flowing through a sun salutation in these yoga leggings unites the best of both comfort and style.
The strategically placed mesh blocks flatter and contribute to breathability, making these great go-to leggings for hot and power yoga flows (as long as they’re removed immediately after class).

Athleta

Pros

These yoga leggings feature a waistband pocket that’s useful for non-clunky items like cards, cash, or a loose key. Walking into my local yoga studio, I was pleased to find that the side pockets easily accommodated my iPhone 6s during the quick commute. Once class began, it was clear that the Salutation Tight was made of a perfectly breathable material: The light, thin fabric ensured sweat wasn’t lingering in any curves or crevices during class, and I didn’t notice any visible sweat spots despite the heat.
The fit is very comfortable: no chafing or compression along the seams of these yoga pants (I didn’t even have lines or indentations after taking them off!). Athleta’s mesh is softer and far more flexible than what you’ll find in many other pairs.
Throughout my yoga flow, the high-rise waistband resisted rolling and folding. It lays flat and didn’t show through my lululemon Cool Racerback. All this plus minimal clinging, a hardly noticeable cameltoe, and no feeling of being held in (which means no compression—ladies, these will not hide cellulite) equates to maximum comfort. I’m happy to say the Salutation Tight is commando-friendly. All my queens rejoice!

Cons

As I mentioned, if you’re looking for cellulite-concealing compression, this won’t be your go-to pair of yoga pants. Also note that after class, the sweat I’d worked up left a noticeably moist feeling, and I needed to change into my breezy romper before heading out to my favorite coffee shop. These yoga leggings feature great breathability, but given the mild clamminess typical of a matte-finished workout legging after a sweaty class, they aren’t ideal for a quick transition from the studio to your next activity.

It’s hard to find workout leggings as comfortable as the lululemon Align Pant. Movement during every variation of yoga was noticeably easier in this pant thanks to the “naked” material, which takes standing bow to a whole new level.
The fabric has a soft, matte feel, which makes these the perfect yoga pant to transition your look from a workout to a night out. Since these workout leggings don’t have any flashy features or a super sporty look, they’re perfect paired with just about any item in your closet, from a long cardigan sweater to booties and Old Skool Vans.

Pros

The lululemon Align Pant is similar to the Athleta Meshblock Pocket Salutation Tight in terms of moisture wicking and breathability. There is no feeling of thickness or super tight compression to these pants, and the shape holds well when worn as suggested. The waistband on these workout leggings is easily my favorite out of the various pairs I tested. It sits just above the belly button, slightly higher than the Athleta Meshblock Pocket Salutation Tight and lays completely flat with no rolling or adjusting needed.  

Cons

Although these pants were airy and comfortable during hot yoga, the moisture was noticeable once the flow stopped. While the sweat spots weren’t visible, I would still recommend removing these pants shortly after a heated class since they are not entirely moisture-wicking. I’m a fan of high-waisted leggings, but the Beyond Yoga High Waist Leggings missed the mark a bit for me. Although these pants were tailored well to the calves and ankles, the fabric wasn’t very breathable and felt more like a traditional cotton legging. While these leggings are not ideal for a sweat session, they do pair well with everyday attire. With that being said, they don’t hold up well enough for regular wear. There were signs of pilling in just two short weeks.

These workout leggings had comfortable seams and didn’t chafe during my hot and vinyasa practices—or core circuits! The waistband hit at the belly button and stayed in place, only requiring one adjustment during my 60-minute yoga flow. These pants have decent compression, but no excessive squeezing that would limit breathing, moving, or eating.

Cons

Unfortunately, these workout leggings were not comfortable for hot yoga as I began feeling clammy and restricted as class continued. These pants also did not dry quickly after class. Overall, I would only recommend them for room temp flows. The fabric was slightly see-through, which made me feel a bit self-conscious during my practice. Unfortunately, this nagging distraction is the last thing you want during a centering movement meditation. In my opinion, these workout leggings were not worth the price tag.

ZELLA’s Live In High Waist Leggings are a well-tailored yoga pant option that’s crazy posture proof. (Hollow back handstands, here I come!) If you like thicker material and an extra long inseam on your yoga pants, this is a great pick. In fact, the legs were so long that at 5’4” I experienced a little scrunching around the ankle, which means the Live In Leggings will be perfect for tall and long-legged ladies. 
The poly-spandex blend results in a matte, brushed-feeling material that’ll keep you comfy, especially in a cooler studio space (i.e., I’m not recommending this pair for hot yoga).

Pros

I got to to do some hip-opening, root chakra–grounding binds while sporting these leggings and was pleasantly surprised by their flexibility. No chafing and no cutting in, even as I was breathing through my flying lizard lunge! The Live In High Waist is true to its description, sitting just above the belly button. The leggings stayed in place throughout my yoga flow—no adjustments necessary. The crotch is also comfortable with or without underwear, which is great for poses like bird of paradise and happy baby. I would gladly wear these out and about, which means these yoga leggings stay true to their name.

Cons

Some will love the thickness and compression of the Live In Legging, but for those who break a serious sweat, a quick change after class (or a more moisture-wicking pair of leggings, like the Nike Pro HyperCool Training Tight) will be welcome since the material can feel a bit clammy. If you already love the ZELLA Live In Legging but are looking for something for hot yoga, opt for ZELLA’s Lightweight High Waist Midi Leggings or their High Waist Mesh Crop.
These yoga pants are prone to clinging and are likely to pill if not handled carefully. Also, if you’re petite and bothered by scrunching at the ankle or want yoga pants with a pocket that can hold more than a card, cash, or a loose key, opt for the Athleta Up For Anything ⅞ Tight.

Women’s Winter Workout Clothes To Keep You Cozy And On Track Despite The Cold

Working out during the winter months takes incredible dedication. You’ve got your cozy bed, snuggly blankets, hot chocolate, and holiday cookies all working against you. But working out in winter is just as important as it is the rest of the year. Keeping your body in top shape means a regular fitness routine, all year long.
When it comes to a frosty jog you, need the best of women’s winter workout clothes to keep you comfortable and healthy. Proper workout attire can help ease the transition from the heated indoors to the cold air outside and keep you safe from the elements so you can make it through the winter fit and frostbite free.

Keep your bod protected.

Keeping your fitness routine going during the winter months is super important, but you can’t just wear the same tops and shorts that were your go-to’s in summer. You need your whole body protected from the elements to make sure your fitness routine isn’t going to do you any damage.
You know when you walk outside in the winter and the air is super dry and cold? That dry air is actually drying your skin. This means that in addition to stretching and warming up, part of your pre-run routine needs to be skincare.
Marina Peredo, MD, FAAD, says that you need a well-rounded, hydrating skincare routine in winter. “In order to prepare your skin for running in the cold weather, make sure you hydrate before, during, and after your run to avoid dehydration.” This means drinking lots of water and stocking up on your favorite facial moisturizer.
Peredo says, “Wearing sunscreen in the winter months is just as important as the summertime.” She says your pre-workout skincare routine should involve applying a layer of moisturizer, letting that soak in for a minute or two, then applying a layer of sunscreen.
“After a run, make sure to rinse and again apply a layer of moisturizer.” Keep up with your moisturizing routine all winter and your skin is sure to thank you.
There’s also the lovely issue of Raynaud’s syndromea spasm in your arteries that reduces blood flow to your extremities including your fingers, feet, and toes—which occurs when you’re subjected to a stress, like exposure to a very sudden temperature drop in a workout ensemble that doesn’t protect you.
One cold-weather run may not trigger an episode, but according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, women and those who live in cold climates are at increased risk and severe Raynaud’s can develop into skin sores or even gangrene (which is the death of bodily tissues—something you definitely want to prevent).
To avoid these potential issues, do a little prep work, wear your sunscreen, and choose winter workout clothes that will keep you comfortably warm and protected.

Opt for quality over quantity.

If you’re a diehard runner all year long but your budget is tight, we strongly suggest investing in a few key pieces of winter workout gear that will keep you protected. It’s better to do laundry a little more often than to go out in harsh conditions wearing workout clothes that could literally put your health at risk.
There are several things you need to look for in winter workout gear. You want clothes that are going to keep you warm and protected from harsh winds and low temps, but are still breathable. You know you’ll still sweat—even in winter—so clothing made of fabrics that wick away moisture is your best bet. When moisture comes into contact with your skin, it helps you cool down, which is great during the summer heat but can pose a risk in winter weather.

Say no thanks to cotton.

A 2011 study found that the best fabrics for cold weather use moisture-wicking technology. This means no cotton (which does not wick moisture well), at least when it comes to the first layer of clothing that will be touching your skin. Studies show fabrics with increased moisture-wicking abilities made study participants feel more comfortable, and that added comfort was noted if a fabric was ribbed.
Keep an eye out for ribbed thermal shirts and leggings made of moisture-wicking fabric. You can look for labels like Coolmax to see if an item is moisture wicking.

Outdoor Winter Workout Clothes

The colder it gets, the more layers you should wear, starting with a long-sleeve top and long pants as a first layer and adding layers of tops, jackets, pants, and accessories the colder it gets. You’ll have to use your best judgement (and maybe a little trial and error) to make sure you’re adequately prepared for the cold, but not overheating once you get into your groove.

Leggings

Start off with a pair of performance leggings as your first layer. Something nice and tight that’s made of moisture-wicking fabric is a must. If you need more layers on your legs, it’s much easier to slip on a pair of sweats over compression leggings that fit like a second skin.
Our recommendations are Under Armour’s ColdGear LeggingsASICS’ Winter Tights and Thermopolis Tights, and Athleta’s Polartec® Sculptek Tight.

Jackets

We like winter workout jackets to be light and breathable while still adding a lot of warmth (bonus points if they have reflective elements to ensure you’re seen by passing cars, whether you’re jogging before sunrise or grinding it out after work at night).
The Under Armour Storm Layered Up Half Zip and the Nike Dry Fit Element Half Zip Running Top are perfect for when it’s definitely cold but you’re not going to be freezing.
When the temps really drop (or when it’s raining or snowing), go for the Athleta Wind Sprint Jacket. It’s made with Primaloft Eco insulation to keep you warm, has a hood that packs down into the collar, and is water-resistant to help you brave the elements.

Shoes and Socks

Breathable shoes—like those with mesh vents—are necessary to let moisture out, no matter what time of year you’re exercising. Accessories for Fingers, Face, and Beyond

Other things you’ll need (but may not have thought of) are mittens, ear warmers, and eye protection.
In general if it’s not too frigid, opt for gloves like The North Face Women’s Etip Gloves. They’ll keep your hands protected but won’t weigh you down. That said, if it’s particularly cold, mittens are your best bet for trapping warmth and keeping your fingers protected from the cold.
The Carhartt Insulated Breathable Mitt is an awesome option for freezing days, but they can be bulky. If you need a little more flexibility, opt for lululemon’s Run Fast Gloves, which are a mix between gloves and mittens that give you the best of both worlds.
As for ear warmers, we like fleece options that will keep your ears nice and warm while you run. The TrailHeads Ponytail Headband is great because there’s a slot for a ponytail to slip through so longer-haired gals don’t get all tangled up.

Here They Are: This Year’s 10 Best Fitness Trackers for Women

Dozens of features, hundreds of brands, thousands of models, tens of billions of dollars—we’re talking about the booming business of fitness trackers, whose wearable biometrics are transforming the way we eat, dress, work, sleep, and play. But with so many options out there, it’s hard to know which fitness tracker is best. HealthyWay is here to help.

From DaVinci to Smartwatches

First, let’s take stock of just how far we’ve come with fitness trackers. In his famed notebooks, Leonardo DaVinci sketched his vision of a mechanical pedometer for Renaissance soldiers, though it wasn’t until 1780 that Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet actually constructed the first one. And Thomas Jefferson gets the credit for bringing an early pedometer—his, a French design—to the New World.
Fast forward to the 1960s, when the Japanese developed the manpo-kei, literally the “10,000 steps meter,” which set the now-popular benchmark for activity today. In 1982, a Finnish professor invented the first wireless wearable heart-rate monitor: the Polar Sport Tester PE2000, designed for professional athletes.  
The 2000s marked some of the biggest breakthroughs in fitness trackers, with tech titans like Garmin, Apple, and Samsung packing accelerometers, altimeters, barometers, Bluetooth technology, gyroscopes, GPS, and magnetometers into ever smaller, sleeker, and more sophisticated devices, like the Nike+iPod. This 2006 collaboration embedded a wireless sensor in a special Nike sneaker, providing runners with distance, pace, and calorie data on their iPod Nano all while getting a power boost from their favorite tunes. The technology now may seem a little quaint, but the Nike+iPod was a visionary application of technology for personal fitness.    
Then along came a little startup called Fitbit, which helped take fitness trackers further into the mainstream in the 2010s with its ever-expanding line of fun, user-friendly, and affordable wristbands and smartwatches for the everyday exerciser.
Today, we have fitness trackers that not even the genius of DaVinci could have dreamed up. Take Fitbit’s latest release, the Fitbit Ionic. It tracks your sleeping cycles and withstands water to dozens of meters deep. It offers personal training tips and analyzes long-term health data trends on its related app. It can also store hundreds of songs and push a range of alerts and notifications. It features a touchscreen and even allows for touch-pay.

Remember: Fitness trackers are still tools, not cure-alls.

The bells and whistles of today’s fitness trackers are impressive, but do they work?
If you’re hoping that fastening on a fitness tracker will get you shedding those extra pounds and never skipping a workout, think again. A September 2016 study concluded that wearables did not improve weight loss over traditional methods. The following month, another study questioned the effectiveness of fitness trackers in even motivating long-term increases in physical activity.
Still, researchers are finding an uptick, if modest, in activity thanks to the self-monitoring and goal-setting fitness trackers afford—and that matters. Changing behavior begins, after all, one step at a time.
And the behaviors fitness trackers are helping to change aren’t just about clothing sizes. The Fitbit Charge 2 is smart overall choice.

The Charge 2 ($149.95) is Fitbit’s top-selling fitness tracker—and it consistently earns some of the top reviews. TechRadar, for instance, touts it as “the best Fitbit tracker you can buy right now.”
The core of the Charge 2 is its PurePulse technology; its all-day activity tracking automatically and continuously monitors the wearer’s heart rate whether you are running, hiking, biking, lifting weights, or simply going about a normal day. Thanks to its SmartTrack functionality, the Charge 2 will sense and record workouts even if you forget to hit start. It will also vibrate and flash a reminder to move if you’ve been idle too long.
The Charge 2 features a high-res, tap-enabled screen that displays real-time calorie burn and exercise intensity along with basic call, text, and other alerts if your smartphone is nearby. A software update will offer personalized workouts on the watch soon.
The Spark 3 packs in all these feature at a lightweight 1.62 ounces and less than 1 square inch display. The battery lasts up to three weeks if you’re not using its GPS, which otherwise will require a recharge in 11 hours. (Ever wonder why your phone dies when you’re heavy on the Google Maps?) The Opter Pose will rejuvenate your lifestyle.

On the other end of the spectrum is Opter, whose Pose health tracker sees physical fitness as just one part of a broader healthy lifestyle.

Like most fitness trackers, the Pose logs steps, calories, and sleep. It doesn’t come with a heart-rate monitor, but it will vibrate if you are slouching, helping to improve your posture. And it will sense if you’re at risk of too much sun, prompting you to apply more sunscreen. It also tracks your exposure to blue light, the high-energy light that our smartphone and laptop screens emit.
“No sleep tracker that’s been done is tracking your daily light exposure,” which “affects your biological clock,” Prarasri explained in a previous interview. “If we can track that as well as your sleep schedule, we can recommend times to sleep so that your sleep is higher quality and more efficient. Light is the thing that is shifting a lot of people’s schedules and giving them insomnia.”
To help rectify this, the Pose will monitor your blue light exposure throughout the day and direct you to turn off the lights at night.

Go for great GPS with the Garmin Vivosport.

Garmin is a trusted name in GPS and is fast becoming a trusted name in fitness trackers. The Garmin Vivosport ($199.00) is the latest member of its Vivo family.
Like other fitness trackers, the Vivosport connects to your email, calendar, and social media while counting everything from your footsteps to heartbeats through its wrist-based sensors. But it packages Garmin’s top-notch GPS tech, which is lacking in many fitness trackers, into an incredibly slim body and a touch-activated color display.
Although the Vivosport doesn’t feature any sleep tracking, it does track your stress levels by monitoring changes in your heart rate.
The Vivosport comes in four color choices but no interchangeable bands. Screen: 0.38 inches. Weight: 24-27 grams. Battery: seven days in smartwatch mode, eight hours when using GPS. It’s accompanied by an app and, with Garmin Connect, can communicate with your—and others’—Garmin devices.

Get a dazzling display with Samsung Gear Fit 2.

If you’re looking for amazing display in your fitness wearables, look no further than the Gear Fit 2 Pro ($199.99), the latest offering from Samsung.
The centerpiece of the Gear Fit 2 is its curved screen and pixel-packed (432 x 128) display, giving it some of the best fitness-tracking optics out there. The usual internet connectivity and activity-monitoring apply (steps, calories, heart rate, sleep), but the Gear Fit 2 throws in GPS and up-to-50-meter waterproofing. Samsung bills it as a smart “watch for fitness,” because of the many apps you can download on the device.
Speaking of downloads, the Gear Fit 2 Pro is a friend of Spotify, letting you save up to 500 songs that you can listen to offline. It’s also partnered with Under Armour, giving you access to the sport company’s quality fitness apps.
Style choices are limited, as it only comes in black or red, but you’ll probably want to customize its fancy 1.84-inch display anyway. It’s a hair on the heavier side, as far as these things go, at 34 grams (.07 pounds).
Gym rats quibble with the accuracy of some of its activity tracking, but the Gear Fit 2 Pro still makes for a high-performing option for the tech-forward weekend warrior.

The Mi Band 2 wins big on budget.

Looking for something much more streamlined in terms of function and cost? Consider the Mi Band 2 from major Chinese consumer electronics player Xiaomi.
The app-synching, splash-resistant, 20-day-long-battery, light-as-air (7 grams) Mi Band 2 counts steps, monitors heart rate, tracks sleep, supports basic message notification, and gives you a nudge if you’ve been sitting still for too long—all for $29.99, if you don’t find it for less.
The Mi Band 2 is a no-nonsense no-brainer for the budget-conscious newbie to fitness trackers.

Class it up with Misfit Ray.

Misfit proves that fitness trackers don’t have to sacrifice style for substance. This wearables brand brandishes a clever name—and gorgeous products, like the Misfit Ray.
The Ray (~$85 to $100) tracks the fundamentals—activity and sleep—in an elegant band that comes in 23 sporty and classy metallic-finish options such as a striking rose gold. The Ray is discreet but distinct, looking more like a smart bracelet that accessorizes your activity tracking rather than announcing it. That’s because the Ray features no screen. Its minimalist look pairs well, too, with a wristwatch or smartwatch. Misfit offers lots of band options and even a special lariat, should you want to sport your Ray as a necklace.
You can monitor your performance in the Misfit app, which offers a Speedo-powered upgrade so this water-resister can track your swimming. The free Misfit Link app lets you turn your Ray into a smart button for, say, taking a selfie or changing songs on your smartphone.
And there’s no need to charge the Ray. It lasts for four months before you have to replace its battery. The device itself runs under 1.5 inches long and weighs a mere 8 grams.

The Bellabeat Leaf styles itself as smart jewelry, and indeed, this elegantly crafted device is designed to be worn as a pendant, bracelet, or brooch-like clip. “No buttons. No screen. Simply wear it and sync it to the app,” as the Bellabeat website puts it.
The Leaf isn’t intended for hardcore marathoners who need to track pace and distance in real time, but it’s perfect for the modern woman who cares about health, technology, and fashion. The Leaf tracks sleep, activity, stress, and menstrual cycles—which the tracker logs and learns from, and it even provides advice tailored for each woman’s period.
As Bellabeat’s social media and content manager Katja Peric explains to HealthyWay, the Leaf is “the perfect companion in health for any woman—it looks beautiful and can suit any occasion or lifestyle. The features are optimized for women (reproductive health tracking) and serve as a reminder that their overall well-being matters by providing insight into stress levels and having meditation exercises available.”
It comes in four main styles, combining a silver or rose gold clip with a wood- or stone-styled tracking device. But each actual Leaf is unique, which underlies the core philosophy of Bellabeat.

As much a fitness tracker as a personal trainer, the Moov Now is a small, screen-less disk you insert into a workout-optimized strap you can wear on your wrist or ankle. Pair it with your smartphone, where with the Moov app you can download workouts for swimming, running, cycling, and even boxing—all started with the click of its button.
Thanks to its special motion sensors, the Moov Now’s AI personal trainer will tell you in real time if you’re striking your feet too hard on the ground, if you need to push a little bit harder riding up a hill, if you’re clenching your fists while jogging, or when to hook and jab-cross during a boxing routine.

I do my fair share of hiking and trail running (just don’t ask me how fast I am), so I know [linkbuilder id=”2552″ text=”the importance of hydration”] when you’re far from a treadmill cupholder or water fountain. These bags are designed with the liquid held high up on your back, and I can say from experience that this results in minimal bouncing. There is always at least some if you’re running with liquid weight in tow, but you get used to it fast.
In the past I’ve used a CamelBak bag for my trail runs, but when I saw the nine different “festival” color options from the SoJourner brand available on Amazon, I couldn’t wait to share.

13. Minimalistic Design

Are you a fan of normcore? Are you put off by “fancy schmancy big bags” that promise the world and then are just too heavy or bulky or covered in a million pockets? We say, go minimalist!
