Getting Your Money's Worth: Budget-Friendly Vs. Expensive Hotels

For nearly eight years, while I finished high school, got my college degree, and started navigating life after college, I worked in hotels.
In high school, I worked at a resort with a formal restaurant and a full-service space. I served in banquets, then moved on the front desk where I eventually managed a small staff of employees while I was in college.
After that job, I moved on to a budget-friendly option near the airport. The guests at this hotel just needed a bed, and that definitely showed in how the hotel was taken care of. I didn’t stay there long. The last place I worked was budget friendly, but a part of a major brand. It was a great experience being able to watch hotel ownership caring about how the hotel was cared for and making sure budget-travelers had an enjoyable stay.

For most of my time in hotels, I worked either as a front desk agent, front office manager, or assistant general manager. Even so, I still spent plenty of time helping with laundry, vacuuming rooms, and jumping in during busy seasons in the restaurant. I kind of feel like I’ve seen it all.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a hotel as anything more than a guest, but my behind-the-scenes experience means I’ve learned some important lessons about finding a good place to stay, how much money to spend, and which inexpensive options are worth a try. Here’s what you need to know about getting your money’s worth in both cheap and expensive hotels.

“You shine like a star.”

Five-star hotels are often thought to be luxurious and pristine, while low-star hotels are associated with being more affordable but of lower quality. The system of hotel star ratings, though, is widely misunderstood.
Originally created by Forbes Travel Magazine in the 1950s, star ratings are concerned with amenities and features. This is important to know if you’re turning to a star rating to gauge something like cleanliness—that isn’t what this rating measures.

For example, a one-star hotel is likely to offer the most basic room: a bed and a bedside table. When staying in a one-star hotel, you might even share a bathroom with other guests, according to USA Today.
As you move up in star ratings, the number of amenities increases. A two-star rating indicates that a hotel has private en-suite bathrooms as well as a closet or dresser. In a two-star hotel, you’ll have a TV. It might not be top-of-the-line, but it will be there.
Three-star hotels are likely the type of hotel your average traveler expects to stay at while traveling for work or vacation with their family. It’s definitely not a luxury option, but it should be comfortable and affordable at the same time. The rooms in a three-star hotel are roomy. You’ll have a newer TV and there will likely be someplace to eat in the hotel. There might be extra staff to offer help with things like taking your luggage to your room or helping you plan out things to do during your trip.

Four-star hotels are definitely more luxurious—your room will be large, and you’ll access to a spa, a gym, and room service—and five-star hotels are the best of the best. When you opt for five-star digs, you’ll have a concierge on site. The rooms will be very large, well decorated, and have top-of-the-line appliances and furniture.
As you can imagine, the star rating of the hotel will definitely affect your experience, but a lower star rating doesn’t necessarily mean a bad experience—it just won’t be a luxury stay.

“Budget-friendly does not necessarily mean ‘not clean,’ but it may mean not-so-updated,” explains Ashley Blake, founder of Traverse Journeys. “Your bathroom tiles may be scrubbed and sanitized in a budget hotel but still have signs of wear and tear, where you wouldn’t find that in a five-star hotel.”

The Money Myth

One of the lessons I learned quickly while working at my first hotel, the historic resort and spa, was that many people truly believe that spending more is tied to better quality accommodations. While I think there is some truth to that belief, it only applies in the extremes.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/HRAUN

For example, if you’re choosing between a $44-a-night motel and a nightly rate that’s several hundred dollars, you’re probably going to have vastly different experiences. However, I’m convinced that when we’re talking about spending $100 or $200 a night on a room, the cost might have nothing to do with the quality of your stay. Instead, less-talked-about factors like brand and location will wind up determining if your hotel room is going to be clean and comfortable.

What’s in a brand?

When it comes to finding a hotel, brand matters. In my experience, this can really set one affordable hotel apart from another. For many hotels, branding is much more than a color scheme or tagline you see in their advertisements.
In hospitality, brand identity is often tied to brand standards. This is important for travelers to know because that means there are certain hotels that belong to brands that require them to meet specific standards in order to remain affiliated with the brand. This is the reason staying at a Holiday Inn in San Francisco is a similar experience to staying in a Holiday Inn in St. Louis—all Holiday Inns are working off of the same manual. They’re all trying to keep their hotel clean and maintained for those random drop-ins for brand inspections.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/tupungato

This is also good news for travelers on a budget. Within a brand like Hilton or IHG, there are multiple price points from luxury hotels all the way down to extended stay options. While there are definitely differences between these price points, expectations of cleanliness and maintenance are common threads that run through all hotels in a brand.
The employees working at hotels under these brands are taught to pay close attention to the details as a way to improve the guest experience. I’ve been the fly on the wall during many brand inspections and seen even the most affordable hotels within a brand receive penalties for things like marks on the walls of rooms and dust along the floorboards.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/andresr

The same is true for customer service. Within a brand, employees are typically held to the same standard of being friendly, quick, and going above and beyond to meet guest expectations. Sticking with brand-standard language, answering the phone within a few rings, and following a step-by-step procedure for check-in were all a part of the branded hotel inspections I was involved in during my hotel days.
Of course, brand is also not equivalent to ownership. Two hotels can share a brand, like IHG or Hilton, without sharing ownership, and ownership definitely plays into how an individual hotel is maintained because, in many cases, ownership determines budget.

Not all that glitters is gold.

Interestingly enough, an expensive price tag doesn’t necessarily indicate that a hotel will be clean. Knowing what I know about resorts from my time working in one, I cannot emphasize this enough.
The expense of maintaining a resort compared to a budget accommodation is astronomical, with larger rooms to maintain, a spa and restaurant to staff, and extensive grounds to upkeep. It is easy to see how a lean season for a resort might mean corners end up getting cut in housekeeping or maintenance.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/skyNext

A small 2016 study conducted by TravelMath actually found that budget-friendly accommodations were cleaner than luxury accommodations. They swabbed surfaces throughout hotel rooms, like the bathroom counter, the phone, and the remote control, and tested those swabs for germs to determine the number of CFUs, or colony forming units of bacteria, were present.
The results might make you squeamish.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/dogayusufdokdok

The bathroom counters in rooms of all star ratings tested for an average of 1,288,817 CFUs. Four-star hotels had the highest average bathroom-counter CFU count, with an average of 2,534,773 CFUs. Moving on to the remote control, scientists found an average of 232,733 CFUs per square inch on the remote controls in three-star hotels. In the five-star hotels, the number is downright scary, with an average of 2,002,300 CFUs per square inch. That’s enough to inspire a large investment in Clorox wipes.

Beyond the Basics: Amenities

While you could easily argue that cost isn’t closely tied to cleanliness, the same is not true of amenities. In my experience, the biggest difference between an affordable and a luxury-brand hotel is in the amenities, and Blake is quick to point this out as well.
“This point may vary quite a bit for budget accommodations: Some are no frills and you’re lucky if they have soap and a bottle of water for you. Others have a full spread of toiletries, slippers and robes, and maybe even a hair dryer and iron,” Blake explains.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/dogayusufdokdok

This is in comparison to an expensive or luxury hotel, which will always have high-quality amenities like complimentary name-brand beverages in the room or name-brand toiletries in the bathroom. High-end hotels also have the extras, according to Blake, like a pool, spa, gym, and landscaped gardens, golf courses, or patios.
Another way I have seen this play out is in the food that is offered at different hotels. Many hotels offer food, either for free or as a part of a package. While this is an amenity often offered by both budget and high-end options, a closer look will likely reveal a big difference in what is offered.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/DinoGeromella

A small buffet of pre-cooked breakfast food, warmed in a convection oven, is fairly standard in budget-friendly hotels like Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, and more. Luxury brands are more likely to include meal tickets to be used for a sit-down meal at a made-to-order restaurant or at the least a made-fresh buffet.
From there, there is so much to choose from when looking at hotels and the amenities they offer. Do you want access to a spa and a full workout room? These are most likely to be available at luxury hotels and resorts. Need a babysitter on site so you can enjoy yourself kid-free for a day or night? Look to luxury options like Club Med, Disney, and Atlantis.

It’s the little things.

Another thing to consider when booking a room is that what you spend might be directly tied to the quality of the sleep you get while you’re there. It makes sense when Blake says that a more expensive hotel means a more comfortable experience.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/bunditinay

“In a high-class hotel, you would almost always expect a top-of-the-line mattress and pillows, fluffy towels, a bathrobe, and a perfectly functioning heat and A/C,” she says. “Budget accommodations will vary widely on these points: Mattresses are more firm in Asia, for example, and that’s likely what you’ll find and sheets won’t be as fine of a thread. The wifi might be temperamental and a lightbulb might go out.”
Blake is quick to clarify that it isn’t impossible to find a comfortable hotel on a budget. There are many budget-friendly options that have built a reputation on making sure their guests feel at home while they are there.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/Bill_Vorasate

Another “little thing” that makes a big difference is the way a hotel looks, according to Blake. This may not be a priority for some travelers, but others prioritize this part of their experience.
“One of the more subtle yet profound differences between budget and expensive accommodations is décor,” she says. “Whether the design is modern rustic, Scandinavian simplicity, or Old World prestige, a high-end hotel will have put significant resources toward the ambiance, feel, and perceived value of the hotel.”
HealthyWay
iStock.com/byakkaya

She goes on to explain that high-end establishments may build their reputations on being boutique hotels with unique and decadent decor. This might be accomplished with unusual architecture, fine art, and even handcrafted furniture. A budget hotel might not look bad, or even outdated, but its decor is likely more cookie cutter.

How to Get Your Money’s Worth

It seems that “it really depends” is the theme of this deep dive. While it is absolutely true that you don’t need to spend several hundred dollars a night for an enjoyable overnight stay, you will need to make smart choices and do your research before booking your room if you’re trying to stay within a smaller budget.
First things, first—know what you want from your hotel stay! Everyone has different priorities when they travel. Is this the type of trip where a clean room and a bed is all you need? Or is it a romantic getaway, and you’re hoping for more than the basics during your trip? Take these things into account as you create your budget and start your search for the perfect hotel.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Vesnaandjic

Next, you’ll want to do your research. This goes beyond looking at a star rating since we’ve established that those only refer to the amenities and extras provided. To gauge something like cleanliness, we recommend finding out what previous guests have to say about a hotel by browsing rating sites like Travelocity and TripAdvisor before you book.
A word of warning, though: Not all reviewers can be trusted! Before you take a negative reviewer at their word, see if that reviewer typically leaves nasty reviews. The problem might not be the hotel; it might be the guest. By comparison, if someone normally leaves complimentary reviews but has harsh things to say about the hotel, you can probably take them at their word and steer clear of that specific establishment.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/TeerawatWinyarat

If you want to cut back on your research time, most booking sites allow you to sort search results by their average rating. This will allow you to filter out any hotels with an average star rating that is scary low, focusing your attention on hotels with three stars or more. Just a note about star ratings on these sites: These are not Forbes stars! Most hotel booking sites have their own systems for rating, which are based on the reviews and ratings left by previous guests.
According to USA Today, the Better Business Bureau is another good resource for researching a hotel. Previous guests can file formal complaints after a particularly bad stay. This is the information you will definitely want to know before booking a hotel!
Lastly, don’t be afraid to do a walkthrough before you get settled into the suite you end up choosing. Pull back the bedspread and check for stray hairs or bedbugs. Do a quick inspection of your bathroom to make sure it is up to your standards. If you’re unsatisfied with the cleanliness of your room, speak with a manager about getting it refreshed or getting a refund so you can move on to better accommodations. It’s not too late to turn your stay around!

The 16 Ultimate Packing Hacks Every Traveler Needs To Know

For travelers, nothing is quite as invigorating as heading to the airport for a big adventure they’ve been planning for months, if not longer. Packing that suitcase, however, can be the opposite of exciting. Few things are more nerve-wracking than making sure you have everything you need, carefully folding each garment to avoid a wrinkled nightmare when you arrive at the hotel, and, of course, squeezing every last item into a tiny carry-on bag. After all, who has time to wait around for checked bags these days?

HealthyWay

Packing can be a drag. So what’s a jet-setter with a serious case of wanderlust to do? For starters, she gets savvy. There’s a certain art to packing a bag. It starts with staying relaxed while stuffing that suitcase full. It definitely requires organization throughout the entire process. But to truly take your packing skills to the next level, you’ll need to learn a few tricks of the trade. Here are 16 travel hacks that will send your luggage-packing anxiety, er, packing.

1. Use a packing checklist.

It’s all too tempting to just grab a bunch of your favorite outfits, toss them in a bag, and call it a day. But inevitably, you’ll end up overpacking while simultaneously missing essential items, which is the worst of both worlds. A packing list can help make sure you bring along everything you could possibly need—nothing more, nothing less.
Ideally, you’d create a custom packing list to fit your exact needs. For example, if you can’t live without a stash of chapstick, your moisturizer, and your lucky hat, better add them to your list! Until you’ve got your own list locked down, though, a pre-made packing checklist can help you stay on track. It’ll remind you about the clothes, personal hygiene products, and accessories that belong in your suitcase, and give you reassurance that nothing important is left behind.

2. Try packing cubes.

It’s a fact: Your carry-on bag will never be as spacious as you need it to be. And those overhead bins aren’t getting any larger! You’ll need to condense your belongings down as much as possible to make sure everything fits in a couple of tightly packed bags. Fortunately, packing cubes seem to make the impossible possible when it comes to packing a ton of stuff in a small space. Roll your garments and tightly squish them in each cube, working to squeeze out as much air as possible.
A large packing cube can contain a week’s worth of clothes, while still leaving you plenty of extra space in your suitcase. Plus, they help you stay organized at the destination. Each cube acts as its own “drawer” when you unpack and can keep your dirty and clean clothes separated. Once you start using packing cubes, you’ll never go back to tossing stuff directly into your suitcase.

3. Bring a mini steamer.

Everyone has their own technique to avoid wrinkling their clothes in a suitcase. Some roll their garments, while others swear by tucking each item between squares of tissue paper. But no matter what, your clothes are going to end up with at least a few creases—it’s the nature of being stuffed into suitcases for days on end. That’s why stylish travelers also throw a portable steamer and iron into their luggage.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These little gadgets weigh almost nothing, take up a minimal amount of suitcase space, and work far more effectively than that dingy old iron in your hotel room. Plus, a portable iron can help your outfits look pristine in minutes. They’re perfect if you’re taking a business trip, heading to a destination wedding, or just want to look your best, wherever you are.

4. Get foldable clothes, shoes, and accessories.

If you’re racking up a lot of frequent flier miles every year, it’s worth investing in some travel-friendly clothing. You may have noticed what a pain it is to lug around a big, heavy coat, or how impossible it is to pack one. A packable down jacket that squishes into a handy pouch is just what you need to stay warm without the added bulk.
Think about your shoes, as well. Footwear can eat up an enormous amount of suitcase space—if you let it. A pair of foldable flats is just what you need to save space without compromising your style. You’d be surprised at just how many foldable items are available for travelers. They even make foldable headphones that you can stash in the smallest bags!

5. Buy reusable travel containers.

You never know what kind of amenities will be available at your hotel. It’s safe to assume that soap, shampoo, and conditioner will be on offer—but will they be any good? Many travelers prefer the peace of mind that comes with packing their own toiletries from home.
Rather than shelling out for those overpriced travel-size versions of your favorite products, invest in a set of TSA-approved silicone travel bottles that you can refill over and over again instead. They slip into any carry-on bag with ease. And, having access to the amenities you already know and trust when you’re on a trip is like a little taste of home. Pop them in a resealable plastic bag and you’re good to go!

6. Power up while you’re on the go.

The most ubiquitous feature in today’s high-end suitcases is a built-in phone charger. It makes sense—who couldn’t use some extra juice when they’re scrolling through social media as they wait to board a flight? But even if you don’t have a fancy bag, you can still recharge your batteries on the go with a portable power bank.
Many of these devices can completely refill your iPhone battery three or four times on a single charge. There’s nothing like finding out your smartphone battery is dead when you want to snap a pic of a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Fortunately, portable chargers are a lifesaver when you’re traveling in remote areas (say, hiking in the jungle or taking a safari).

7. Print is dead, go digital instead.

Books and travel go together like peanut butter and jelly. Travelers rely on guidebooks to help them find the best places to eat and sleep in a new city, wind down from a busy day of sightseeing with a story in their hotel rooms, and get lost in novels while they sunbathe on the beach. However, books are heavy and bulky, which is not ideal when you’re trying to pack light.
An e-reader is one of the smartest investments traveling bibliophiles can make. They can store thousands of titles in a device that weighs as much as a single paperback novel. Plus, if you finish up a book or two and still crave more literature when you’re on the road, you can just download a fresh novel and dig in, wherever you are.

8. Use a handbag with lots of pockets.

Airlines generally let you bring a rolling carry-on bag, as well as a “personal item,” like a handbag or backpack—and smart travelers take advantage of every inch of allowable space. Finding a handbag with a lot of pockets is one of the best travel hacks for jet-setters who want to stay organized on a flight. Nothing’s worse than digging around your bag on a cold, dark airplane when you’re trying to find your hand lotion.

HealthyWay
Amazon

A handbag with lots of compartments allows you to create a dedicated space for each of your essentials. Some even come with pockets specifically designed to hold crucial items, like your keys, passport, sunglasses, and wallet. There’s nothing like the peace of mind that comes with knowing where to find every last item in your bag.

9. Tiny containers are your best friends.

When it comes to travel hacks, tiny containers are incredibly versatile tools. They can store all kinds of things that you probably want to travel with. While you might never think you’d need a contact lens case if you don’t wear contacts, it’s worth investing in one or two. They’re the perfect size to store the tiniest bit of moisturizer, toothpaste, or even perfume. And if you thought pill organizers were solely reserved for travelers with medical needs, think again.
These convenient cases can store your necklaces, earrings, small cables, and other items that might otherwise get lost or tangled. You’d be surprised at just how useful these cases and organizers can be for carefully storing small items in a big suitcase.

10. Pack a quick-dry towel.

It’s always a good idea to have a towel in your bag when you go on a trip. Sure, your hotel might have one—but what if you take a spontaneous trip to the beach, or go camping? You’ll definitely want your own. While those plush terry cloth towels you have in your bathroom might be soft and snuggly, they take up too much room in a suitcase.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Invest in a microfiber travel towel, instead. Favored by athletes and travelers alike for its ability to absorb moisture really quickly, this kind of towel also has another valuable feature: It dries super fast. Just hang it out on a balcony, drape it over a chair, or toss it on a tree branch, and it can dry in roughly 20 minutes. There’s no risk of a gross, mildewy towel stinking up your bag and making everything damp.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Wolfyok-Microfiber-Absorbent-Swimming-Backpacking/dp/B01L8RM8X0″]Wolfyok 2-Pack Microfiber Travel Sports Towels, $13.59 from Amazon[/link-button]

11. Put dryer sheets in your bag.

Speaking of a stinky bag, don’t be surprised of you get a whiff of something less than fresh when you’ve been traveling for weeks on end. Between your dirty laundry, the strange places you’ve stored your bag, and everything else that comes with having an adventure, you’re bound to experience an odor at some point when you unzip your suitcase.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It’s wise to pack a few aromatic dryer sheets in a resealable plastic bag to fend off strange smells. Not only can they make your clothing smell like it just came out of the wash, dryer sheets can also be used to deodorize a musty hotel room, reduce static electricity, freshen up a rental car for a road trip, or mask the lingering smell of a room-service breakfast long after you’ve finished your eggs and toast.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Downy-Infusions-Lavender-Serenity-Softener/dp/B00NJ1MALE”]Lavender Serenity Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets, $4.97 from Amazon[/link-button]

12. Personalize your luggage.

What color is your suitcase? Let us take a wild guess: It’s black. Pretty much every traveler has a run-of-the-mill black bag. That’s fine, until your bag goes missing and you need to tell a hotel clerk or airport agent what to look for when searching for your suitcase. Finding ways to help your bag stand out from the sea of other black suitcases is a particularly smart travel hack.
Try buying a distinctive luggage tag to dangle off the handle of your bag. Look for one with bright colors, unique shapes, and fun designs so you can recognize your suitcase right away. Suitcase stickers are another way to make your bag stand out. May we suggest travel-themed stickers that convey your passion for exploring the world?

13. Separate your in-flight necessities.

You know how airlines are super strict about how many bags they let you take on board the plane? We get it—there’s limited space available. But sometimes you just need one more bag. That’s why it’s worth popping a foldable reusable grocery bag in your carry-on luggage. It’s the perfect place to stash your in-flight essentials, like a snack, chapstick, a book, your phone, and your headphones.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Board the plane with two bags and when you get to the seat, pull out your reusable grocery bag and store the rest of your luggage for the duration of the flight.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Foldable-Reusable-Grocery-Shopping-Patterns/dp/B07CTC1CCG”]Foldable Reusable Grocery Bag, $13.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

14. Use a jewelry organizer.

Traveling with jewelry presents its own set of challenges. Obviously you want to store things in as small a package as possible, but nothing’s worse than finding a tangled rat’s nest or broken jewels when you reach for your favorite necklace. A jewelry case can help you keep all your precious trinkets safe when you’re far from home.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This case has separate compartments for necklaces, earrings, and rings, plus lots of padding. And here’s a secret: A jewelry case can also be used to store your cables for your electronics.

15. Get a universal travel adapter.

Experienced travelers don’t have the time to fumble around with an assortment of power adapters, trying to figure out exactly which one they need for the country they’re planning to visit. Instead, they pack a universal travel adapter. These nifty devices can help you fit your electronics into outlets in more than 100 countries.

The extra USB outlets on the travel adapters will also come in handy when you want to charge multiple devices at one time. Having access to power wherever you are is one of the most useful travel hacks you can adopt.

16. Always pack a sarong.

Travelers, meet your new best friend: the sarong. You may already have one of these garments left over from a beach vacation, but trust us when we say they are useful for so much more than throwing on over a bathing suit.
These make the best blankets when you’re freezing on an airplane, can double as a towel when you forgot to bring one, stand in as a blanket for an impromptu picnic in the park, and become a fashionable dress for beaches and resorts. You can also tie them up to create a little pouch for your gear. Once you see how useful it is to have a sarong on a trip, you’ll never travel without one again.

Get Away, Together: 19 Couples Vacations For You And Your Boo

Sometimes the ultimate test of a relationship is how well you travel together. More often than not, the best way to really connect with someone is when you’re both out of your element.
“Taking a break from the daily routine, the hustle, and the kids is healthy to reconnect. Sleep in and take time to enjoy pure and simple activities with each other,” says Lillian Aviles, director of business development for luxury travel company Journey Mexico. “Sometimes we get so caught up in the day-to-day that romance gets pushed to the side. Turn off your phone and take a look at the beauty that surrounds you.”
From international trips for couples to romantic vacations on a budget, these are 19 top romantic vacations for reconnecting with your partner and discovering new things about the world and each other.

Top Vacation Destinations for Storybook Romance

1. Vienna

Storybook charm permeates Vienna from Schönbrunn Palace (the private residence of the imperial family) to the Spanish Riding School, where Lipizzan horses have been trained for more than 450 years. 2. Paris

Paris is called the City of Love for a reason. You won’t find a more romantic or iconic city for couples anywhere else in the world. Elegant architecture, romantic side streets, and sidewalk cafes barely scratch the surface of what Paris has to offer couples. Hire a private car service to drive down the Amalfi Coast for a day, and spend the entire time stopping in at restaurants and landmarks, such as Ravello, the highest point in Amalfi.

4. Iceland

Iceland is an adventure-lovers’ paradise, full of white-water rafting, hiking, scenic drives, kayaking, snowmobiling on a glacier, and so much more. Each moment can be filled with adrenaline-pumping activities, but it would be a shame to miss the relaxing, meditative moments in Iceland’s many hot springs—which are often the perfect end to a day spent chasing thrills.

Stay at: Lambhús (from $87/night)

“Lambhús offers quaint little cabins in the countryside of southeast Iceland. 5. Phuket, Thailand

“Thailand encompasses so many different categories and bottles them into one country. Once you’re on those incredibly turquoise-blue islands, surround by massive mountain rocks, it’s complete romance and adventure,” says Cessie C.

Top Vacation Destinations for Foodie Couples

6. Napa Valley, California

Napa is an absolute must for foodie couples—especially those who appreciate good wine. The happy marriage between the two (food and wine, not you two lovebirds) is prevalent all throughout this region. Hire a private car or hop Ubers to check out some of the best off-the-radar wineries, including Artesa, Sterling, and Tank Garage. If you’re considering Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry—one of the country’s best restaurants—just do it. You only live once.

“Staying near the Napa Riverwalk means you can enjoy some of the city’s best dining, including La Toque and Morimoto,” says Alexia. “Make sure to stop by the Oxbow Public Market for some of the best casual dining in the region as well.”

7. New Orleans, Louisiana

NOLA has an intoxicating atmosphere that just makes you want to live life, bite by bite. Start with a sinfully good breakfast at the Cake Cafe. Stop in at Coop’s Place for an ice cold beverage and marinated crab claws. A visit to Erin Rose for a frozen Irish coffee and a poboy from Killer Poboys helps to round out this food tour on foot. For dinner, Pêche is a seafood favorite; you can’t go wrong with anything from the raw bar, and the whole grilled fish is an Instagram-worthy entree. Other classic recommendations (that don’t swing too touristy) include Cochon Butcher, Herbsaint, the Carousel Bar, Coquette, Commander’s Palace, and Bacchanal.

“We love staying here as it’s within walking distance to the French Quarter, but not so close that you’re on top of all the noise and chaos,” says Becca D. “It’s so centrally located, so you can walk off all the calories you’re bound to inhale.”

8. Mérida, Mexico

When people think of authentic Mexican cuisine, Yucatán is often overlooked. But the state, with Mérida as its capital, is teeming with a wide and unique offering of delights. Local specialties include pan de cazón (layers of tortilla with a tomato, onion, and Serrano chili sauce filled with local white fish), poc chuc (grilled pork marinated in sour orange), and sopa de lima (shredded chicken and strips of tortilla with a sweet and tangy lime broth).

9. St. Lucia

St. Lucia is fairly small in comparison to other Caribbean islands, but it has something for everyone. Its beaches are stunning for lounging, offering views of the iconic Pitons. Sample fresh cocoa beans at a plantation, sip local rum, or simply sit back and relax. If couples should want a little action, the botanical gardens have hot springs and waterfalls as well as top sites for snorkeling.

“This resort, the sister property to world-famous Jade Mountain, is overall a bit quieter, with more dramatic cliffside rooms. I love this property for the views, and the staff’s attention to detail,” says Daniela H.

10. The Maldives

Couples know that they will spend a bit more on a splurge trip like the Maldives, but the memories are simply priceless. There is a world-class coral reef, so be sure to grab snorkel gear and spend time exploring the reef. Simply stunning ways to spend the day with your boo include stand-up paddleboarding or a sunset cruise on a dhoni, a traditional boat used in the Maldives to see the dolphins making their daily migrations.

The beach towns, restaurants, and laid-back living will make you feel as though you’ve stopped into a Ralph Lauren summer collection ad—and you don’t need a passport or a mega time commitment to do so. Pro tip: The best way to explore Rosemary Beach and the surrounding beaches is by bike.

13. Lost Coast, California

The 25-mile trek that is the Lost Coast is perfect for nature lovers, as this is as close to roughing it as it gets. The entire trail is a stretch of California coastline nearly 300 miles north of San Francisco; it’s so rugged, roads have not yet been able to conquer it. If it can be done in nature, you can do it on the Lost Coast, from hiking to backpacking, fly-fishing, biking, walking, or even just sitting outside together sipping a California craft brew.

“There are no designated campsites, mostly lightly suggested areas in which to pitch a tent,” says Mary Kate B. “The trail is astonishingly beautiful. You will pass through meadows, tide zones, and forests. If you’re looking for a challenging and secluded getaway for even the most experienced backpackers, this is it.”

14. Alaska

In Alaska, nature is all around you, no matter where you go. Rent a car and drive the state, but be sure to take your time and research before you go so you can see the things that are important to you as a couple. Hiking is number one for nature lovers, especially those hikes that are surrounded by water and waterfalls.

Stay at: The Ma Johnson’s Hotel (from $110/night)

“One of our favorite memories was in a small town called McCarthy. We drove 60 miles of dirt road to get there. The only hotel in town is called Ma Johnson’s. You are in the middle of nowhere with beautiful mountains surrounding you,” says Steph M.

Top Vacation Resorts for Couples to Get Busy

True, you can get down with your partner anywhere—we don’t need to tell you that. But if you’re looking for something a bit more on-the-nose, try one of these resorts specifically meant for sexy time. Get it, girl.

15. Hedonism II, Negril, Jamaica (from $352/night)

With a name like Hedonism, this resort leaves little to the imagination. The experience in person is no different. Hedonism is a nudist resort designed for couples who live “The Lifestyle”—a not-so-secret code for people who enjoy swinging. But don’t let that scare you off. It’s actually an incredibly curated, fun, provocative, safe, and clean experience—at a luxury all-inclusive resort in Jamaica, to boot.

Pool at Hedonism II Resort in Negril, Jamaica
Hedonism II

Hedonism II hosts sexy theme nights, erotic-inspired shows, pool parties, and more. But the culmination of any visit to Hedonism is a trip to the Romping Shop Playroom, where couples (and singles) are invited to explore whatever comes naturally to them. From voyeurism and monogamous fun to swapping and sharing, anything goes in the Playroom— provided you ask permission first.
But rest assured, if you don’t feel comfortable going quite that far, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy. Only one half of the resort is nudist, and clothing is required in all dining areas and the gym. And sex is not a requirement; it’s simply easily accessible for those who want to explore.

16. Breathless Riviera Cancun (from $303/night)

“Breathless is a high-end all-inclusive resort with a sexy twist, and it definitely doesn’t disappoint, nor does it cross the line for those who might not be so comfortable with some of the clothing-optional hotels out there,” says Elena. “Everything from the room design to colors and music to the topless pools and late night parties makes you feel excited and open to possibilities.”
Breathless puts on nightly themed shows that get your mind racing about possibilities. One of the pools is always topless optional and holds foam parties with dancers every afternoon. And should you need time away from the resort, Riviera Maya is packed with activities, including snorkeling cenotes, visiting local parks, zip lining, and exploring local markets.

Top Vacation Destinations for Couples on a Budget

17. Montenegro

“Montenegro is an absolutely breathtakingly beautiful country that has gone largely undiscovered,” says Elena. “Food entrees run about 3 to 4 euros, beer is 2 euros, and an average, no-frills hotels price is 40 euros a night. Still, you’re experiencing the same type of beauty as you would in Italy but for half the price.”
vacation views montenegro
Some wonderful ways to experience Montenegro on a budget are to taste the local food, hike (which is always free), or raft down the Tara River.

Stay at: Hotel Conte (from $115/night)

18. Hawaii

Hawaii might not have the reputation of being a destination for romantic vacations on a budget, but through a few hacks, couples can experience the magic of the islands without breaking the bank. Snorkeling and hiking are two Hawaii musts that are always free. Visit Two Steps on the Big Island, or Kee Beach on Kauai, which has a beautiful, free hiking trail that is about two hours each way. The Road to Hana on Maui is also packed with hidden pools and waterfalls.

Stay at: An Airbnb!

“Even cheap hotels in Hawaii are not cheap, so why not get an experience out of your stay?” asks Noa H. “One Airbnb was almost like a treehouse in the middle of the jungle. Another was a converted garage. The family that lived in the main house caught a 28-pound fish one day and invited us and the entire neighborhood for a cookout. That doesn’t happen in hotels.”

19. Medellín, Colombia

Medellín is doing a wonderful job showcasing its transformation from cartel stronghold to travelers’ paradise. Though it doesn’t shy away from shedding light on its once treacherous past, the city is focusing on its urban socialism, art, and growing culinary scene.
“In a city that is now just getting used to being in the travel spotlight and experiencing a sudden rush of tourism, Medellín still proves to be extremely affordable,” says Prin B. “The local fare is cheap, with stands offering delicious arepas, empanadas, and other goods at every corner.”

37 Carry On–Friendly Travel Products For The Girl On The Go

Many travelers avoid checking a bag like the plague. Why? First of all, it costs extra money. Second, it’s a hassle. Third, we think we can fit everything we need to in our “carry-on and personal item,” meaning hassle and extra cost are two things we shouldn’t even have to think about.
But there are many chronic overpackers and inexperienced travelers who struggle to get everything they want into their carry-ons. The key to overcoming this is packing smart, which means packing small. It means figuring out what’s essential to you, and finding the smallest version of it or the smallest way to pack it. These products will help you master the art of packing small.

1. Little hand sanitizers will help you stay clean and fresh.

Hygiene doesn’t take a break because you’re traveling. Airports and airplanes and tourist attractions are notoriously germy places, so keeping some hand sanitizer on you is the smart thing to do.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Who makes better scented hand sanitizer than Bath & Body Works? Uh, no one. This Classic Faves pack comes with all the best scents: peach bellini, cucumber melon, black cherry merlot, sweet pea, and beautiful day. With a mix of natural and germ-killing ingredients, these are a must for the hygienic traveler. Stash a couple in your carry-on to kill bacteria on-the-go.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bath-Body-Works-Pocketbac-Antibacterial/dp/B00GZRA3MW”]Get them on Amazon for $14.75[/link-button]

2. Put the medicine you’ll need in a small case before you go.

Travel is definitely not the time to bail on your medication regimen. Whether it’s prescription meds, an over-the-counter option, or vitamins and supplements, chances are you need to bring some type of medication with you when you travel. Rather than stash a whole bottle of ibuprofen, divvy up what you’ll need and put your capsules and pills a little case.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This cute medicine box will hold your meds and take up practically zero space in your purse or carry-on. The saying on the front, “Good Vibes Only,” is also a nice reminder during potentially stressful travel.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Life-Vitamins-Organizer-Vibes/dp/B07DVTP41B”]Get it on Amazon for $12.19[/link-button]

3. A portable charger will be a lifesaver when your phone’s about to die.

Between looking up directions, trying to find places to eat, and playing games on the plane,  odds are you’ll be using your phone a lot when you travel. That means your phone’s battery will be feeling the burn, and the last thing you want is to be away from home with a dead phone. That’s why you should always bring an external charger when you travel.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This small and light option provides three and a half iPhone 8 charges and two and a half Galaxy S8 charges. Plus, once you get to the next airport or your hotel, you can recharge it and hit the trail again knowing you’ll never be without power. This Anker PowerCore 10000 External Charger comes with a travel pouch and cord and will also slide into your carry-on without taking up much room.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Ultra-Compact-High-speed-Technology/dp/B0194WDVHI”]Get it on Amazon for $29.99[/link-button]

4. Don’t forget your essential cords, cables, or power banks.

Most people at least bring their laptop and phone with them with they travel, but it’s 2018, so a lot of people also have Apple watches, tablets, Airpods, and other tech gadgets that require additional charging gear. Rather than just throw all these cords and cables in your bag, pack them up neatly in their own little case.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This one has four elastic bands to hold cables and cords, plus a mesh zipper pouch for bigger items. It’s has a flat, compact design perfect for travel, but also features foam padding to protect your gear. The best thing about it: You won’t have to deal with a tangled mess of cords when you get to your destination.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/UT-Wire-UTW-PKT3-BK-Organizer-Accessories/dp/B01KGCRGGM”]Get it on Amazon for $9.15[/link-button]

5. Get a case for your contacts, so you can, you know, see and everything.

Normal contact lens cases are small enough for travel, but contact lens solution? Not so much. Those bottles are usually too big for TSA. And even though the contact lens case is small enough, it’s easy for it to get lost in the depths of carry-on duffel or purse.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This travel case comes with a TSA-approved solution bottle, contact lens case, and mirror. It also has a little lens holder and inserter if you need those. Plus, it keeps everything all together in a single case so you don’t have to dig through everything you packed when you want to take your contact out or put them in.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/VAMIX-Simple-Contact-Travel-Container/dp/B06XGXT15D”]Get it on Amazon for $9.88[/link-button]

6. Equip yourself with wireless earbuds for planes, trains, and automobiles.

Nobody has time to deal with corded headphones while traveling. It’s just another thing to get tangled in your under-seat bag. Wireless options are less messy and earbuds are less bulky. It’s the perfect choice for minimalist traveling.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These Bose earbuds have a neck strap, so you can pop them in and take them off without having to put them away every time. They’ll simply rest around your neck when they’re not in use. If you do want to take them off, they come with a convenient travel case.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bose-SoundSport-Wireless-Headphones-Black/dp/B01L7PSJFO”]Get them on Amazon for $149[/link-button]

7. You’ll need these small toiletries because showering is important.

TSA rules pretty much guarantee your normal size shampoo and conditioner won’t make it through security, that is, unless you normally use teeny-tiny hair care products. If you’re going to a hotel, they’ll have some, but it might not be the best quality.

HealthyWay
Amazon

To make sure you’re hair care is under control, it’s best to just buy travel size bottles of a tried and true brand, like TRESemme. This TSA-friendly moisture-rich shampoo and conditioner duo will keep your hair from suffering during travel.

8. Again, travel size body wash, because showering is important!

Cleaning your hair is important, but we can’t forget about the body. Hotel soap bars are notoriously the worst and leave that filmy feeling on your skin. Pass. Again, taking a travel-size version of your favorite brand is your best bet.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Caress’ Daily Silk smells good and will leave your skin moisturized and clean. No awkward bars, no nasty film, and a nice smell. Perfect!
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Caress-Daily-Silk-Body-Wash/dp/B00NG4F160″]Get it on Amazon for $9.99[/link-button]

9. If you travel a lot, investing in travel-size bottles might be best.

Rather than buying travel size products, you could just take the products you have already and dump them into travel bottles. If you’re a frequent flyer, this is definitely the better choice from an economic perspective (and also works well if you have to have a shampoo, conditioner, or body wash that doesn’t come in a travel-size container).

HealthyWay
Amazon

This four pack is leak proof (triple sealed just to be sure) and TSA-approved, so you’ll be good to go. Refilling is normally the hardest part with these bottles, but these have a wide opening to make it as easy as possible.

10. Treat yourself to the cutest razor you’ll ever see.

Razors are easy to forget. Since a lot of women don’t use them every day, it’s not on always on our minds. Plus, no one wants to throw a wet razor straight from the shower into their bag, and who has a razor case?

HealthyWay
Amazon

This itty bitty razor from Gillette is the perfect solution. It’s so compact, which is perfect for touching up fuzz while your traveling, and it’s a full size razor, so you can do some full-on shaving when you get to your destination. It also comes in a little case that you can throw it in your bag without worry.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Gillette-Venus-Cosmo-Smooth-Womens/dp/B00I5H5Z1O”]Get it on Amazon for $6.99[/link-button]

11. These tiny tissue packs are made for on-the-go sniffles.

You don’t want to be that person who’s on the plane, clearly struggling with a runny nose and not handling it. You also don’t want to be the person who sneezes in the confined space of an airplane seat without any protection. It’s best to be prepared for these scenarios.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You should carry tissues, like Kleenex Pocket Packs, all the time, but especially when you’re traveling. Whether you have allergies, feel a cold coming on, or just have one massive sneeze, you want to keep whatever’s coming out of your nose off of everybody else. Be ready with tissues you can grab at a moment’s notice, and also offer up to someone who might be suffering through the same unpleasant travel sniffles.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Kleenex-Balsam-Pocket-Packs-pack/dp/B00KO2NEWA”]Get them on Amazon for $6.39[/link-button]

12. Soothe (some of) your travel anxieties with a pocket-size stain remover.

You’re at the airport at 6 a.m. to catch your flight, so naturally, you run through the Starbucks line. Then when you’re groggily taking your first sip, you spill some on your shirt. Great start to a day of travel.

HealthyWay
Amazon

That’s why you carry a Tide To Go pen on your person. They work on most stains, so rather than walking around with coffee on your meticulously planned travel getup, you can handle it right away and board the plane confidently.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Tide-Instant-Stain-Remover-Liquid/dp/B01C3NAT16″]Get them on Amazon for $6.79[/link-button]

13. This is the perfect mat for the traveling yogi.

Traveling shouldn’t mean that you have to give up your flow! In fact, vacation destinations can be great for exploring different yoga classes (or doing yoga outside or on the beach!). Luckily, finding a mat that fits in your carry-on isn’t as hard as you might think.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This 2 mm foldable mat from Gaiam is perfect. Since it folds rather than rolls, it fits into your suitcase just like a piece of clothing. It’s scored for easy folding and still has a sticky texture to give you the grip you need.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Gaiam-Foldable-Yoga-Mat-Grey/dp/B010I7BUG2″]Get it on Amazon for $24.98[/link-button]

14. Moisturize to prep your face for the flight.

Air travel can seriously dehydrate our skin, so it’s important to care for it as much as possible before, during, and after the flight. Before bucking up, it’s a good idea to apply a quality moisturizer.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost water gel is infused with hyaluronic acid to boost moisture levels in the skin and the water-based formula feels light. At 1.7 oz, it’s TSA-friendly and perfect for preparing your skin for jet-setting adventures.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Hydro-Boost-Water-Gel/dp/B00NR1YQHM”]Get it on Amazon for $16.17[/link-button]

15. A nice (but tiny) in-flight mist is a must.

Again, the air pressure on a plane can make you pretty dehydrated. Moisturizing before is a good idea, but during the flight, you might not want to smother a cream all over your face.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The more refreshing option is this non-aerosol mist. Hyaluronic acid, pomegranate, and bilberry-leaf extracts counter inflammation and the peptides and antioxidants help protect the skin. When you’re feeling a little dry, give your face a little mist.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Grown-Alchemist-Hydra-Mist-Desert-Amino-Peptide/dp/B00G3J8K9K”]Get it on Amazon for $30[/link-button]

16. A collapsible water bottle means you can hydrate anywhere.

You can apply all the creams and serums you want, but the best way to stay hydrated is drinking loads of water. TSA won’t let you bring a full water bottle through security, so having one that can collapse until you get through is ideal. You won’t have to waste space on an empty water bottle or buy anything at the newsstands on the other side.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Once you’re on the other side, you can unfold this Vapur bottle and fill it up for the flight. Then, when it’s empty, you can roll it back up and tuck it inside your purse or carry-on.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Vapur-Element-Foldable-Flexible-Carabiner/dp/B007UU6JI0″]Get it on Amazon for $9.62 and up [/link-button]

17. Befriend this odd but compact travel pillow.

We could all use a little in-flight beauty rest. You might get away with clasping your travel pillow to your carry-on, but if you don’t want to deal with all that bouncing around or resort to wearing it around your neck the whole time, you should consider this out-of-the-box option.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Trtl travel pillow is made with super soft fleece and looks like a scarf, but it has hidden support and extra cushioning for your neck. Because it’s not the standard travel pillow shape, it’s not as bulky and can lay flat in your carry-on or purse when you’re not using it.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LB7REFK”]Get it on Amazon for $29.99 [/link-button]

18. Don’t forget a lightweight blanket to bring along.

Unless you’re on an overnight flight, don’t count on the flight attendants to bring you a blanket. Bring your own! Of course, most of your plushy at-home blankets would take up way too much space, but there are blankets made for travel.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This lightweight option is small and light (only 11 ounces)—perfect for throwing in your bag or carry-on without adding weight. It also comes with a carrying case that makes it easier to tuck away when you’re not using it. Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you can’t be cozy.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Cocoon-CoolMax-Travel-Blanket-Black/dp/B00815F0NI”]Get it on Amazon for $37.95[/link-button]

19. This is the better alternative to a Ziploc bag.

You could stick all of your TSA-sized liquids into a Ziploc bag, but that’s not very cute or secure. You might as well pick up a reusable option for all your future travels.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The 3-1-1 liquid rule says you can bring one clear quart-sized bag of 3.4 oz liquids through TSA security. This zipper bag follows those regulations, making traveling with liquids much easier. You can trust it for this trip and all your future adventures.

20. A mini kit will help you keep your nails neat and trim.

We shouldn’t forget about nail care while we’re traveling. You don’t want to be stuck without a nail file when your nail chips or have an overgrown toenail you can’t clip before hitting the beach or pool deck.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This manicure kit from Tweezerman provides just the essentials, like a file and clippers, so you can quickly fix up your nails if they’re looking a little rough.

21. Be prepared for any little messes you might encounter.

You don’t want to be stuck on a plane with oily or sticky hands after eating—not to mention any other random messes that could happen when you’re confined in a cabin with lots of other people.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Bring a travel pack of wet wipes so you can clean yourself up if you need to. These ones are antibacterial and have a citrus scent, so you’ll feel clean and refreshed when you use them.

22. You’ll need a tiny cream for hand hydration.

Going back to the dehydration thing, having a nice hand cream on board a plane is a must for keeping your hands soft and smooth.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This travel size hand cream from Crabtree and Evelyn has shea butter and macadamia nut oil for hydration and French verbena and lavender for a nice scent. Plus, myrrh extract in the formula conditions your nails and cuticles. Keep this on hand for when your hands aren’t feeling their best.

23. Keep it together with an all-in-one passport case and wallet.

Rather than tote around a wallet and passport holder, just put everything in one location. Since you really shouldn’t bring all of your cards when you travel anyway, stash the essentials (credit, debit, cash, passport) in a multi-use passport case.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This one from Fossil has a side for this (your passport) and that (everything else). It’s much easier to keep everything in one place so that it’s all easily accessible when you’re at the airport. Fossil also makes the case in several colors and patterns, so you can pick your fave and travel in style.

24. Keep your jewelry safe in this miniature box.

For some trips, you might need to pack some jewelry. Who said you can’t wear a little bling on vacation? Obviously, you can’t take a full-size jewelry box, but there are only so many ways to store and transport jewelry.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This tiny box is the perfect size for travel. It’s got a row for rings and studs, three little compartments, and an elastic pocket, which is just enough for a week’s worth of jewelry.

25. Pack these, then pack your carry-on.

Despite seeming small, carry-ons can accommodate quite a bit of stuff. But in order to maximize the space, you have to be mindful of how you pack. Randomly filling your suitcase probably won’t be the best way to fit everything you can.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These storage cubes can help guide your packing. They’re designed to fit snugly into carry-on luggage. The pack of six has two large cubes, two medium cubes, and two small cubes for different types of clothing. Fill them with the essentials, then fit them into your carry-on like puzzle pieces and you’re ready to fly.

26. Here’s a clean way to store your toothbrush.

A standard toothbrush holder is good, but and considering your toothbrush goes inside your mouth every day, twice a day, maybe you should consider something with a little more to it.

HealthyWay
Amazon

The Steripod keeps your toothbrush “clean and fresh” with active vapors. Clip the pod on your toothbrush head for physical protection and the active vapors inside will work to sterilize it as well.

27. Go to bed with a clean, fresh face.

Whether your skin’s just feeling a little oily or you want to take your makeup off for the night, skin cleanser is essential. Your whole bottle of face wash won’t make it through security, nor is it convenient for traveling. Face wipes, on the other hand, are TSA-friendly and easy to use on the go.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These Yes To Cucumbers wipes are hypoallergenic and contain soothing aloe. They’re the perfect pick-me-up for your face during or after a long day of travel.

28. Give your face a good scrub with this mini cleansing brush.

Washing with the hotel washcloth is fine, but if you normally use electronic cleansing brushes and want to stick with that, there are carry-on friendly options out there.

HealthyWay
Amazon

FOREOs are the latest cleansing brushes people are obsessing over. Their LUNA play plus is the smallest model, but it still has some serious cleansing power. FOREO says using the LUNA play plus twice a day for just one minute will “remove dirt, oil, and impurities, diminish the appearance of pores and improve the absorption of your favorite skincare products.” If it’s really that quick and effective, this mini face scrubber should definitely be on your packing list.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/FOREO-LUNA-play-plus-Cleansing/dp/B06XSY57C1″]Get it on Amazon for $49.00[/link-button]

29. Make (a little) space for a complete travel skincare kit.

One way to pack efficiently is to rely on multipurpose, travel-size beauty products. Instead of sacrificing quality in your beauty routine, just simplify so that you only need a few products to get that glowy skin you’re after.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This travel kit from Kopari includes their Coconut Melt, Coconut Sheer Oil, Coconut Balm, and Coconut Body Glow. The Coconut Melt alone can be used as a moisturizer, under eye cream, makeup remover, shave oil, hair mask, and more. If you want to make sure you have your beauty bases covered, a kit like this won’t take up much space but will get a lot of use.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0734B26ML”]Get it on Amazon for $38.00[/link-button]

30. Protect your skin, even if you’re not going to the beach.

People tend to think sunscreen is only necessary when they’re going somewhere hot and sunny, but those rays are hitting you any time you’re outside. So regardless of where you’re going, bringing sunscreen is probably a good idea. Your skin will thank you later.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This travel spray from Coola will be perfect for lightly misting your face and body throughout the day. It has SPF 30 and anti-aging ingredients, so your skin will definitely be grateful you brought this along.

31. Clean your hair without taking a shower.

When you can’t bring all of your hair care products, you really need to consider what the essentials are. For a lot of women, dry shampoo is something they absolutely need on their hair’s oilier days.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This small bottle from Living Proof will give your hair a cleaner look, even if you’ve been traveling all day. It eliminates oil, sweat, and odor, so you can have fresh-feeling hair whenever and wherever.

32. This is the only heat-styling tool you’ll need.

Sometimes you want to straighten your hair, sometimes you want to curl it, but you don’t have the space to pack a flat iron and curling iron—or do you?

HealthyWay
Amazon

Not only is this a two-in-one straightener and curling iron, but it’s also mini. So you can style your hair however you want to and wherever you want to. It will fit into your carry-on without a problem. In fact, it’s so small, you can even carry it in your purse if you want.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Curling-Straightener-Ceramic-Tourmaline-Included/dp/B07BMQ5YSD”]Get it on Amazon for $26.99[/link-button]

33. For when you’re feeling a bit peckish…

Nowadays, they only give you one crummy bag of peanuts on the plane. No thank you. You want to bring your favorite snacks, and there’s no shame in packing a little something for the flight.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These snack containers are perfect for packing a little in-flight treat, just for you. You could spend your money on overpriced airport food, but you could also pack your fave snack from home. While everyone else munches on a tiny bag of pretzels, you’ll have a full serving of something you actually want to eat on the ready.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Steelware-Leak-proof-Stainless-Containers-Adults/dp/B01AVW9BCE”]Get them on Amazon for $14.95[/link-button]
[related article_ids=1079031]

34. Invest in a little notebook for (potentially) big thoughts.

Sometimes you just need something to do while traveling, and it could be the perfect time to let the inner writer and/or artist out. At the very least, you can kill some time doodling.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These tiny Moleskine notebooks take up very little space, but they could occupy your brain on a long flight, at least for a little bit. Plus, little journals like this are the kind of thing you’ll enjoy revisiting one day—especially if they’re filled with your travel tales.

35. In Case of Emergency, or Paper Cut

You want to be prepared for anything when you travel, but that’s hard when you only have a carry-on bag. It’s not like you can pack your whole medicine cabinet, but you can still try to have the essentials medical supplies on hand.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This mini first aid kit is smaller than the palm of your hand and has all the basics: bandages, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic—basically what you’d need for anything you could handle without a doctor. It won’t take up much space and it’s just generally smart to pack one of these.

36. This raincoat fits in its own pocket.

A rain jacket is one of those items you might decide to leave out to save space. You looked at the weather and it’s not going to rain, but we all know that weather people aren’t always perfectly accurate.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Luckily, you can pack this Eddie Bauer rain jacket without worrying about wasting precious space. It folds up into its own right pocket. If it doesn’t rain, it didn’t take up that much space; if it does, it will save you from getting totally soaked.

37. Detangle your hair on the move.

You can’t comb out knots with your fingers. Unless your hair is perfectly silky, it just won’t get the job done. That’s why it’s essential to pack a brush. Since brushes can take up a lot of space, this miniature Wet Brush will be your go-to for travel.

HealthyWay
Amazon

It works on dry and wet hair, so you’re good to go right out of the shower, or out and about doing touch ups. It might take a few more strokes than it’s larger counterpart, but you can’t beat its travel-friendly size.

Good To Go: Travel Essentials You Shouldn’t Leave Without

Packing for a trip is so stressful, I sometimes think it would be nice to have a crystal ball. After all, in just one afternoon you’re expected to conceptualize an entire week’s worth of outfits while trying to take into account your mood, the weather, and any unexpected plans. But even beyond having the perfect outfit (and shoes…and accessories), there are plenty of travel essentials that completely slip your mind come packing time. Suddenly you find yourself buckled in for an eight-hour flight in a dried-out cabin, searching feverishly for your lip balm.
We have all been there. And it is truly the worst. So to make sure you never find yourself in an ohh, I wish I had that moment again, we’ve rounded up the best travel essentials for your toiletry kit and beyond. Though these things might not have been at the top of your list before, this will surely become your go-to travel essentials checklist.

Travel Essentials for Health

Flying isn’t always a smooth experience. Rough air can lead to anxiety and sometimes even nausea and sickness. Insomnia is also a major villain when it comes to air travel. Fortunately, our experts have holistic tools at the ready to help.

Supplements

“I take a multivitamin and lots of vitamin C, like Emergen-C or Airborne, to boost my immune system while traveling,” says Tiffany Dowd, a global hotel expert and founder of Luxe Social Media and Luxe Tiffany. “In addition, I take magnesium supplements to help regulate my sleep, and I find it also helps my jet lag.”

Resistance Bands

Exercise post-flight is also crucial to fighting jet lag. Dowd travels with resistance bands to get a quick workout in her hotel room.

Your Fave Tea

“If I’m feeling run down after traveling, I have the hotel make me a cup of fresh-brewed ginger tea,” Dowd shares. “It’s soothing and has anti-inflammatory properties.”

Travel Essentials for Nourishment

There’s nothing worse than an inevitable airplane hangry moment. Sadly, airplane food isn’t the tastiest, and it’s never the healthiest option.

Water Bottle

“I never leave home without an empty water bottle. It saves money so you’re not constantly buying water in the airport and during the trip,” says Debbie Arcangeles, host of the podcast The Offbeat Life, a series committed to highlighting those who live location-independent lives. “I also fill the water bottle before I board the plane, so I don’t have to keep asking for water during the flight.”

Snacks

“I always pack high-protein granola bars and raw almonds, which I portion into snack-size bags,” says Dowd. “These are quick energy snacks that are easy to pack.”
“I always travel with Quest and One protein bars, because a hungry Sarah is an angry Sarah,” says Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon, Caribbean travel expert and owner of JetSetSarah.
[products ids=’1005455,1005472,1005468′ type=full]

Tech Travel Essentials

Air travel is a perfect excuse to catch up on anything you ordinarily don’t have time for. Because you won’t have cell service and might not want to pay for wifi, you’ve got the perfect excuse to pause work to enjoy a little you time with the help of these high-tech touches.

Your Gadgets…and Noise-Canceling Headphones to Go With Them

“I need my iPhone, of course,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “I’m currently looking for a pair of noise-canceling headphones to block out other people’s noise when I work in public spaces.”

Portable Charger

Greaves-Gabbadon, Dowd, and Arcangeles all recommend a portable charger for cell phones, as well.

Kindle

“I always have my e-reader with backlight,” says Arcangeles. “It’s a space saver, and I can even read when the lights are out so I don’t disturb the other passengers. It’s also great to have when your flight is delayed or when you have a long layover.”
[products ids=’1005479,1005482,1005486′ type=full]

Travel Essentials for Beauty

Dry, cold air, a change in pressure, and lots of sitting can wreak havoc on a beauty regimen. Still, there are ways to maintain healthy skin while traveling with a few simple must-have beauty travel essentials for your toiletry kit.

Face Wipes

“I love having face wipes with me on the plane, especially during long flights. I can feel refreshed and clean right away,” says Arcangeles.

Sunscreen

“I always wear sunscreen when flying. You are actually exposed more to the sun’s harmful rays up in the air,” says Dowd. She recommends EltaMD UV Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen ($26) because it’s light and blends well under makeup.

Eye Cream

“I splurge on La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Eye Cream ($460), which is so soothing under your eyes and prevents dryness,” Dowd says. She also recommends the Malin + Goetz Replenishing Face Serum ($70) for facial hydration on a flight.

Travel Makeup

“I keep travel makeup to a minimum,” Dowd says. “I love wearing a dab of NARS Illuminator ($30). It gives you an instantly refreshed and beautiful look.” She also recommends powder bronzer by Bobbi Brown ($44) and a lengthening mascara like Lancôme Définicils ($27.50).

Lip Balm

“I discovered Lanolips 101 Ointment Superbalm ($17) and it’s since become my go-to for my chronically dry lips and cuticles,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.
[products ids=’1005491,1005493,1005500,1005502,1005504,1005510,1005512,1005513′ type=full]

Travel Essentials for Comfort

Airplanes are incredibly cold—and dry. The air at 30,000 feet can’t hold much moisture, and adding it to the airstream in an airplane is very difficult. Flying with 300 passengers also means the flight attendants aren’t going to change the temperature just for your frozen toes.

Eye Mask

“I must have an eye mask because I take a lot of early morning flights to the Caribbean, and there is always someone in my row who just has to have the window shade open,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

Foot Hammock

“On long-haul flights I always bring a foot hammock,” Greaves-Gabbadon says. “I’m only 4’9” so my feet don’t touch the ground on many aircraft. The straps fit over the tray table and then I just slip my feet in. It’s way more comfy than having my feet just dangle (and swell) for hours.”

Eye Drops

“I always pack rewetting eye drops, as the air is so dry on airplanes,” says Dowd.

Compression Socks

“I was recently on a 16-hour flight from Hong Kong to Boston, and on a long-haul flight like this I always wear compression socks to prevent deep vein thrombosis,” Dowd says. “I find my legs are more relaxed and less swollen when I land.”

Don’t forget your passport!

We asked our experts for anything else they like to bring with them on their trips that makes the journey a little more personal. Interestingly enough, all of their answers had to do with their passports.
“I never leave home without my passport,” says Dowd. “Whether it’s domestic or international, I’m ready to go anywhere at any time. I also always keep an extra copy of it somewhere in my bags as well as a digital copy on my phone.”
“I just got the most stylish red leather passport case from Anya Hindmarch,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “It zips around so nothing falls out, has plenty of pockets for cards, and it’s personalized with “JetSetSarah” on the front. I won’t leave home without it.”

What to Wear on the Plane

We all want to feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible on an airplane. Still, there are some travelers who take this a little too far and show up for a flight as if they are turning in for the night. Pajamas on an airplane is not the most pulled-together look. But today’s trends tend to favor comfort and function, so it’s not difficult to throw together a stylish plane outfit that you don’t mind sitting in for hours.
“I’m usually in dark pants, ballet flats like Chanel or Paul Mayer, which are easy to get off in security, and a comfortable top, such as a ¾-sleeve top or tee from Michael Stars or Three Dots,” says Dowd. She also always brings her Hermès pashmina, which doubles as a stylish scarf and also keeps her warm during the flight. Tip: When wearing ballet flats, don’t forget to wear your no-show socks—no one wants to walk barefoot through security.
“I bring a light, long jacket to wear over my outfit,” she adds. “I’ve just discovered this new brand called Anatomie, which is super stylish and comfortable travel wear.”
[products ids=’1005630,1005629,1005626′ type=full]

“I am a big believer in wearing anything that is a one piece, like maxi dresses and jumpsuits,” says Arcangeles. “It’s a lot less stressful to figure out how to put together an outfit, and they are super comfortable to wear while still looking stylish.”
“Most often I wear boyfriend jeans, a T-shirt, and an adidas track jacket,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “On longer-haul flights I might swap the jeans for something softer, like harem pants or track pants. And nine times out of ten, wherever I’m flying, I’m in adidas sneakers. I’m quite the sneaker head. I customize them with Hickies so they’re easy to remove at security.”

How To Plan Last-Minute Trips (Without The Stress!)

Ever feel that urge to get out of town, like, now? Anyone who’s been bitten by the travel bug (or regularly craves a change of scenery) has felt the intense need to take a last-minute trip. But between choosing a destination, booking flights and hotels, and figuring out what you’ll do when you actually get there, it can sometimes take months to plan a vacation. Wondering how you can plan all of that in a day?
Stay calm—last-minute trips can be every bit as invigorating as vacations you’ve planned in advance, and they definitely don’t have to stress you out.
There’s a certain art to pulling together a last-minute trip, though. You’ve got to have a sense of which destinations work best for spontaneous adventures, what types of activities you can do spur-of-the-moment, and where to book affordable flights and hotels just days before you go. Once your bases are covered, all that’s left is figuring out what to bring. (But don’t worry, we’ve got a packing list that can help!)
Here are some tips on booking a last-minute trip, so you can embrace your spontaneity, sans stress.

Rethinking Your Approach to Vacation

Think about the last time you booked a major vacation. You probably came up with a specific experience in a specific destination (road-tripping the California coastline! wine-tasting throughout Burgundy! swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas!) and made it happen. Cheers to you for crossing those must-have experiences off your travel bucket list.
But for a last-minute trip, you’ll need to be a lot more flexible. Think more broadly about the type of experience you’d like to have, such as a tropical beach getaway, couple’s retreat in the mountains, or outdoor adventure with the entire family. Then, research a variety of potential destinations that offer those experiences to see which have the best bargains for a last-minute trip. Rarely is one type of experience confined to a specific destination (except maybe those swimming piggies).
If you're lucky enough to book a last-minute trip to the Bahamas, you could be swimming with the pigs in no time.
“Most people that are planning last-minute trips just want to go somewhere, usually wherever’s the cheapest,” says Courtnie Nichols, a travel concierge and founder of TravelBash. “So I ask questions about what they might be looking for, like a health and wellness trip or a girlfriends’ getaway or romantic vacation, and offer them three ideas that fit that theme.”
You might be dying to jet off to Waikiki this weekend, but unless you score the right deal on flights and hotels, a last-minute trip to Hawaii might be out of the question for your budget.
Instead, think about why you wanted to go to Waikiki: Was it the glorious beaches? Luxe hotels? Animal attractions? Narrow down what drew you to that destination, then seek out places that offer a similar experience, such as the Caribbean.
That will allow you to have the kind of last-minute trip you crave without draining your travel fund. And who knows—you might find you like the alternative destination even more than the spot you had originally dreamed of.

Where to Find Cheap, Last-Minute Airline Tickets

So you’ve picked your destination, and you’re ready to work out the details. How do you find cheap last-minute flights?
You’ll need to be strategic…and a little bit lucky. First, learn which websites and apps tend to have the best last-minute flight deals. KayakSkyScannerGoogle Flights, and Hopper are some of Nichols’ favorites to use for airline tickets. Then, find ways to outsmart the airlines.
“Enable private browsing [such as incognito mode on Google Chrome] when you’re looking for flights for last-minute trips. Websites can track when you’re searching and they might raise the prices. Be smarter than the airlines,” says Nichols.
The day and time you search for travel deals also matters when it comes to how much you’ll pay for a last-minute trip. Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays are the best time to book flights, says Nichols.
“Don’t even ask why I’m sometimes looking at flights at 2 a.m. or 4 a.m., but any time after midnight, you can get good deals,” she explains, with a laugh.
Another way to potentially find a bargain flight for a last-minute trip: Look for two one-way tickets as opposed to a round-trip booking. That trick doesn’t always work, but when it does, you can save big, says Nichols.
Sometimes, third-party websites and blogs can clue you into cheap flight options that might inspire you to take a last-minute trip. Check out The Flight Deal, which posts about flights that go on sale to destinations around the world. (Last December, that site posted about a flight deal to Mexico City that lead to a spur-of-the-moment getaway with one of my besties.)
If you’re on a tight budget for a last-minute trip, consider driving to a destination. It might be less expensive than booking flights for everyone in the family, and it’s always nice to have your own set of wheels when you’re on vacation.

Booking a Hotel Room for Last-Minute Travel

Now that you’ve figured out where you’re headed for your last-minute trip and how you’re getting there, it’s time to find a place to stay.
Waiting until the last minute to book your hotel rooms can work out in your favor, says Nichols.
“Everyone says book early, but what happens if you wait is that a lot of resorts and hotels look at their inventory, and if they have space, they send out last-minute hotel deals,” she says.
The best way to find out about cheap last-minute hotel rooms is to sign up for loyalty programs at the major hotel and resort brands, such as Sandals, Hilton, and Hyatt, Nichols adds. The companies will serve their best offers right into your inbox.
Waiting to book a hotel room until the last minute can actually work out in your favor when planning a last-minute trip.
Most travelers rely exclusively on the internet to make their bookings, but picking up the phone can give you access to travel deals that aren’t being distributed online.
“Hotels and campgrounds often have last-minute cancellations,” says Bill Widmer, who runs The Wandering RV. “It’s often easy to call them to see if they have any openings. You’ll typically get a good deal if they do.”
Conventional hotels aren’t the only places to stay, though. A number of alternative accommodations provide an array of choices (and price points!) for your home away from home, says Calvin Iverson, travel expert at TravelPirates.
“If you find that all of the cheaper hotel rooms are already booked for the week you’re planning to travel, expand your search to other options like Airbnb and HomeAway,” he explains. “Glamping is also becoming more and more popular on these platforms, and it’s no wonder—it’s the perfect compromise for those who love the outdoors but don’t want to skimp on convenience.”
You can also score deals on hotel rooms for a last-minute trip. But keep in mind: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Check reviews on TripAdvisor before booking accommodations at rock-bottom rates. (There might be a reason that “4-star” hotel has tons of rooms available at bargain prices on a holiday weekend!)

When to Use a Travel Agent

Websites and apps have made it easier than ever to make your own travel arrangements. But there are still some pretty compelling reasons to work with a travel agent, especially when you’re in the mood for a last-minute trip. And surprisingly, it won’t cost you much (if anything!).
“A lot of travel agents don’t charge a fee—they make money on the back-end from the hotels they book for their clients,” says Nichols.
Travel agents are in the know about trends and can give you last-minute trip ideas that never would have crossed your mind. They also have access to special prices on hotels and travel packages that aren’t published elsewhere.
“I get travel deals in my inbox all the time that the public isn’t getting. When I see one that I think a client might like, I get in touch with them to see if they’re interested,” says Nichols.
Relationships with hotels and resorts are at the heart of a travel agent’s business. They leverage those partnerships to ensure that clients are treated like royalty during their stay, which increases the value (but not the price!) of a last-minute trip.
“Travel agents can get you extra perks and upgrades. Plus, they take the headache out of planning a last-minute trip,” adds Nichols.
With the right travel agent, you can jet off on the trip of your dreams in just a few short days—within budget and without the stress.

Ready to Travel—At Any Time

Want to be able to indulge your inner adventurer and jump on any amazing travel deal you come across? (Who doesn’t?) Then you better have all your ducks in a row long before you try to plan a last-minute trip. And by ducks, we mean travel documents and related materials.
“Your passport is the most important thing,” says Nichols. “I tell all clients, even if they’re cruising from a U.S. port and reentering in the U.S., that they better have a passport. You never know when the rules will change and politics will come into play.”
Before jetting off to a new country, make sure that your passport isn’t expiring anytime soon. Many destinations require that you have at least six months left before it expires. And double check that you have plenty of blank pages available for stamps and visas.
Anything can happen before or during a journey, especially on a last-minute trip. Travel insurance can help you troubleshoot major issues and reimburse some of your expenses, should you need to cancel reservations.
Going abroad? Check if your health insurance policy will cover you if you get sick or injured in another country. When in doubt, consider investing in travel medical insurance ahead of a last-minute trip.
Finally, a travel-focused credit card proves endlessly useful for people who love to be on the road. You’ll typically pay a hefty annual fee, but the card will give you access to helpful amenities, like rental car insurance, airport lounge passes, travel assistance, hotel room upgrades, money to reimburse you for expenses incurred during travel hiccups (like a lost bag), and tons more. Plus, travel credit cards generally allow you to make purchases around the world without paying foreign transaction fees (because why pay extra for those souvenirs?).

Making the Most of Your Last-Minute Trip

When it comes to last-minute trips, you might have only had time to book a flight and a hotel room before leaving town. How are you going to fill your days once you get to the destination?
“You can plan almost all the activities you want to do on a last-minute trip once you arrive,” says Nichols. “Depending on where you go, the hotel or resort will have a concierge or staff at the front desk who can give you a list of all the fun things to do.”
Whether you want to have a candlelit dinner with a view, an exhilarating ATV adventure, a day of guided sightseeing, or recommendations on the best neighborhoods for a stroll, you can get all the info (and make the arrangements) at the hotel.
An ATV ride through a beautiful landscape could be a great activity for a last-minute trip.
On a last-minute trip, you might not be able to score tickets to the hottest show in town (sorry, Hamilton fans) or reservations at the best restaurant during peak dinner hours, but there will always be fun things to do. Don’t be afraid to ask locals and other travelers for recommendations, says Nichols.
“I was in Puerto Rico talking to locals, and they told me about an amazing jazz place. They can also tell you about activities and where the best bars are,” she adds.
A wide-open schedule is a beautiful thing on a last-minute trip. Relish in the things you love most, whether that’s adrenaline-fueled activities, deep-dives into foreign culture, or just lounging on the beach. And even if you don’t do everything on your list, there’s no need for FOMO—just start planning your next vacation!

16 Yoga Retreats That Are Completely Worth It

You’re likely not starting every morning with a sun salutation overlooking the verdant jungles of Bali, or the mountains of Colorado, or the vineyards of the Douro Valley. In fact, your mornings are probably a little bit different and a lot less Zen. But what if we told you that you could trade in your alarm clock for a yoga mat with a view and a menu of body cleansing, healthy food, and wonderful friendships? Hello, yoga retreats.

Women all over the world crave a yoga retreat experience for a variety of reasons. Yoga retreats can help you kick your diet goals back into gear, unplug from technology, connect with inspiring women, and realign your wellness mindset—all with endless opportunities to reconnect with your body through a yoga-centric vacation.
But a yoga retreat is more than just a getaway; it’s a vacation with purpose that takes you outside of your day-to-day routine. “Making the commitment to go outside your comfort zone for significant growth is a much bigger investment for transformation,” says Ko Im, a New York-based yogi who has led retreats in the Catskills and Bali and attended numerous retreats all over the world. “In my opinion, you should feel taken care of.”

Yoga Retreat Benefits: Why go on a yoga retreat?

Yoga retreats are designed to offer yoga students the opportunity to delve deeper into their personal yoga practice, to learn more about what yoga actually is, and use the structured week of refreshing freedom to develop a better relationship with themselves.
“In my opinion, any and all things ‘yoga’ is never about getting better at yoga, per se, but rather about refining skills and techniques to lead a more joyful, integrated life,” says Eli Walker, founder of Divine Your Story yoga retreats and Drunk Yoga retreats.
“Taking yourself on a yoga retreat is an experience of a lifetime. Not only do you gift yourself an all-inclusive vacation away from the hustle of your day-to-day, but you are also affording yourself the opportunity to explore your depths while replenishing your physical abode,” Walker adds.

There is no typical model of the perfect yoga retreat or attendee. There are yoga vacation options for all skill levels, from beginners to the true pros. What matters is that you have the intention to better your overall wellness.
“If you want to reconnect or explore your deepest self, learn to put a pause on life for a bit to take care and nurture yourself, you’re the ideal customer. This person is ready to unplug and has a desire to explore themselves from the inside out,” says Moana Leirer, an environmental scientist based in Alaska who has attended yoga retreats all around the world.
Yoga getaways have wellness benefits that extend far beyond just improving your yoga practice. Creating the time and space to experience the benefits of a yoga retreat is less an addition to one’s mental and physical health and more of a tool to refine.
“Your mind and body are already ‘perfect,’ but gifting yourself with the opportunity to enjoy both more fully is an investment that will improve every face-off your life, offering new perspective on work, relationships, and your goals for the future,” says Walker.

The 12 Best Solo Travel Destinations For Women

There’s nothing quite like jumping on a plane with everything you need in a bag and getting ready for some solo travel.
For me, solo travel is pure therapy: Eating alone can help you savor every bite; navigating foreign cities without a friend builds your confidence; and spending your days exactly as you want (whether that’s museum-hopping, exploring markets, or lounging on the beach) gives you the headspace you might be lacking at home—plus plenty of time to indulge in what matters to you most.
But the best experiences seeing the world on your own completely depend on choosing the right destination.
While no two spots are alike, the best solo travel destinations share some similar characteristics: They have welcoming locals, spectacular scenery, opportunities to make friends, and unique activities you can do on your own. (Bonus points for hotels that are as chic as they are cozy!)
Wondering where to go on your big adventure? Here are some of my favorite solo travel destinations, along with a bunch of places other women jetsetters have fallen in love with as well. Warning: This list will trigger some serious wanderlust.

The Best Solo Travel Destination for Amateur Archeologists: Malta

This small island nation, tucked just beneath Sicily, is a playground for wanderers. From secret swimming coves and top-notch diving that will make you feel like a mermaid to some of the world’s oldest (and best preserved) archeological sites to walking trails on the edges of stunning cliffs, Malta has tons to explore on your own.

A woman solo travels in Mdina, Malta.
@jonisweet

Crime rates are low, most residents speak English, and public transportation is cheap, safe, and efficient, making this an excellent solo travel destination for women (especially first-time jetsetters!).
Make the capital, Valletta, your base for exploring Malta and its sister island, Gozo. Then, spend a week (or more) uncovering the many secrets of the natural and ancient worlds in this off-the-beaten-path solo travel destination.
Where to stay: Ursulino hotel in Valletta makes for an artsy home away from home with comfy duplex suites and a staff that goes out of their way to make guests feel welcome.

The Best Solo Travel Destination for Culture Buffs: Istanbul, Turkey

Architecture, religions, and foods converge in Istanbul, making it a melting pot of cultural goodness (and a pretty rad solo travel destination).
[related article_ids=1003279]
Mornings start with the Muslim call to prayer, echoing from minarets in the Old City, and a small (but mighty) cup of velvety Turkish coffee. Spend your days wandering through Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, and underground treasures (the Basilica Cistern looks like a movie set!). In the evening, dig into big plates of piping-hot falafel at outdoor restaurants and try out trendy cocktail bars.
Istanbul, Turkey is a beautiful solo travel destination near the sea.
No solo travel adventure to Istanbul would be complete without a visit to a local hamam (a spa focused on bathing treatments).
While I felt completely safe in the city a few years ago, the political situation in Istanbul has been changing rapidly. Keep an eye on the recommendations from the U.S. Department of State before visiting Turkey (or any country!).
Where to stay: Solo travel accommodations don’t get better than Marmara Guesthouse with its cozy, affordable beds, a centralized location, and rooftop breakfasts you’ll never forget.

The Best Solo Travel Destination for Island Hopping: Indonesia

If your dreams of a solo travel adventure include hopping around islands, lounging on beaches, climbing volcanoes, and wandering around dreamy rice paddies, you’ve got to book a flight to Indonesia. Bali’s a great place to start—the island has tons of tasty, healthy food, spa treatments galore, and beautiful temples. But bring your sense of adventure to this top solo travel destination and go beyond the typical tourist sites.
Indonesia is home to many miraculous natural wonders like volcanoes, beaches, and beautiful sunsets, making it the perfect solo travel destination.
Central Java is the arts and music center of Indonesia (plus it’s home to Borbobudur, the epic ninth-century Buddhist temple), whereas Sumatra’s got an absolutely gorgeous crystal-clear lake and striking architecture; meanwhile, Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo) offers access to some of the most biologically diverse flora and fauna on Earth. No matter where your journey takes you, the genuine warmth and friendless of the locals makes the experience so much richer.
Where to stay: Yogi Beach Bungalows offers tiny, private houses right on the beach on the quiet island of Nusa Lembongan for $20-30 a night—you can’t beat it.

The Best Solo Travel Destination for Feeling like Royalty: Portugal

Portugal’s a solo travel destination that’s been plucked straight from a storybook—just look at the vibrantly-hued castles of Sintra. But it’s more than just palaces and royal splendor. Portugal also has some crazy fun cities that leave visitors spoiled for choice of things to do on their own.

A woman walks in front of beautiful building fronts in Portugal. The affordability of travel here makes it a great solo travel destination.
@jonisweet

“Lisbon and Porto are very budget-friendly, the architecture is stunning, and the food is delicious,” says Namrata Bhawnani, co-founder of green travel and living website Ecophiles. “Both cities have bars and cafes with tons of character, plus the port wine cellars in Porto are hard to resist. The sunset in Lisbon is memorable—and free!”
Where to stay: Sleep surrounded by local art at the In Porto Gallery Guesthouse.

The Best Solo Travel Destination for Day Tripping in Europe: Geneva, Switzerland

With world-class concerts, beautifully designed parks, free museums, and lush botanical gardens, Geneva is a prime solo travel destination in its own right. But it also makes a great jumping off point for day trips throughout Switzerland and France, says Tatyana Rodriguez, who lived and traveled there for a year as an au pair.
[related article_ids=1002621]
“You can take the train to the old French town of Yvoire, which has a beautiful five senses garden, or to Gruyères, which is perfect for sci-fi lovers and has a museum dedicated to surrealist artist H.R. Giger,” she says. “From Geneva, you can also drive to Montreux [in Switzerland] to see the place that inspired Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein, or even take the bus to Annecy, France, which is nicknamed the Venice of the Alps.”

The Best Solo Travel Destination for Winter Travel: Québec City, Canada

After traveling to 68 countries and all 50 U.S. states, Elizabeth Avery, founder of Solo Trekker 4 U, has finally found her favorite solo travel destination: Québec City, Canada.
“It’s a friendly, down-to-earth place where eating alone in a restaurant doesn’t feel awkward,” she says. “It also gives you the feel of France for a much lower cost.”
While summer might be prime travel season, winter is actually one of the best times to visit Québec City. Avery recommends skiing, taking a dog sledding tour, ice skating, or even trying out a traditional toboggan, where you’ll zoom down an ice slide at over 40 miles per hour. After all that activity, indulge in some self-care at one of the city’s popular spas and indoor swimming spots.
Where to stay: Make yourself at home at the quaint Auberge Place d’Armes, a charming boutique inn in the heart of Old Québec.

Suri tribesman in Omo, Ethiopia stand against a wall and wait for a stick fight to start. Ethiopia is an excellent solo travel destination because of its rich culture.
She recommends getting your feet wet in Ethiopia. “Ethiopia is safe, and as heartwarming as it is quirky,” she says. While development limitations mean electricity and wifi aren’t entirely reliable at this solo travel destination, the break from modern amenities gives you a chance to dive even deeper into the culture, says Bowden.
“You can’t leave without experiencing a traditional coffee ceremony. And make sure you travel to the rock churches in Lalibela and the Danakil Depression, which will blow your mind,” she adds.
Where to stay: Mr. Martins Cozy Place makes it easy to travel solo on a budget in Addis Ababa, says Bowden.

Beautiful landscapes and animals make Iceland a great solo travel destination.
Iceland also has a thriving solo travel scene. Things can be pricey, so people are eager to save on costs by doing things as a group.
“Iceland has fantastic, safe hostels, so it’s not difficult to meet others if you prefer to socialize while traveling alone. And it’s safe—I never felt uneasy, never worried about my purse, and everyone was really kind,” says Spindle.

Hawaii is a perfect solo travel destination if you want to spend time in the pool.
“I traveled solo to Maui a year ago, and it was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken. It was so easy to meet people on snorkeling trips, just hanging out in cafes, or on the beach. People were friendly, and even though I feared I’d be surrounded by couples, there were plenty of interesting locals to talk to,” she says.
“I also drove the Road to Hana solo,” she says, “which was fantastic because I could stay at each place for just as long as I wanted and do it all on my own clock and terms.”
Where to stay: Addis recommends the Grand Wailea, not only for its beautiful grounds, but also for its onsite restaurant, Humu Humu.
