Motherhood sometimes seems like one long juggling act. You’ve got to take care of the kids, attend to your own career, and, despite some advances in terms of gender roles, in most families, Mom still does most of the cleaning.

5 Women Reflect On Living Childfree By Choice

If you were born female, chances are you’ve been asked—probably many times—how many children you want to have. The concepts of womanhood and motherhood are so fused in the collective human psyche that a woman choosing not to have children continues to elicit responses that range from perplexed and suspicious to incredulous and sometimes even hostile.

According to Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, as of 2014, 15 percent of American women ages 40 to 44 had not given birth to any children. Included in this group are women who adopted and women who wanted children but for some reason ended up not having any.

But often overlooked or caricatured are the women who’ve made a conscious decision to live their lives childfree. The notion that a woman might have dreams, fears, and interests that don’t align with motherhood still confounds many, but its reality is nothing new.

HealthyWay

Hearing these perspectives is important, not only for the sake of girls and women whose desires don’t align with the pervasive “women should have babies” narrative (and the men who remain inclined to view women’s humanity as directly proportionate to their maternal functions) but also, at least insofar as women’s worth continues to be measured by their participation in biological motherhood, for the sake of humanity.

Read on for accounts of women ages 40 and over who have chosen not to have children.

“Workplaces are increasingly inflexible and are not allowing people to be humans and care for their families.”

Alixandra Foisy is a Virginia-based licensed clinical social worker and registered yoga teacher. “I chose not to have children because I know that one must completely devote themselves to their children in order to do it well,” she says.

HealthyWay

While she admires those who are doing just that, she says she chose to be childfree based on how she prefers to spend her time and energy and her understanding of the economy and workplaces policies.

“I care for others through the work I do as a clinical social worker and did not want to come home and not have enough left over for my kids,” says Foisy. Once home, she enjoys the freedom to focus on spending time with her spouse. “I love my husband and am so happy and grateful that we found each other.”

Having a child is also expensive. “Wages have been stagnant and low for a long time and it is nearly impossible to save for my own life, let alone financially care for another life,” says Foisy.

Further incentive to skip having kids is the fact that the United States is still way behind much of the rest of the world when it comes to policies that protect people’s rights to care properly for children and sick loved ones.

HealthyWay

“My spouse and I live far away from family and it truly does take more than just the parents to care for children,” she says. “Workplaces are increasingly inflexible and are not allowing people to be humans and care for their families. I don’t want that to be an added stress in my life.”

“I’ve never woken up one day in my life wishing I had kids.”

“I am 52 and never wanted children,” says Paige Arnof-Fenn, founder and CEO of the marketing consulting firm Mavens and Moguls.

“I’ve been married 25 years and have never woken up one day in my life wishing I had kids,” she reflects.

HealthyWay

“I love my nieces, nephews, and godkids (three of each, nine in all) and have been involved in all of their lives, but always love sending them home too!”

“As an idealist, the reality of what and who we are has fallen far short of my expectations.”

Brandy Stark, PhD, a 42-year-old professor of religions and humanities at St. Petersburg College in Florida, says her choice not to have children was “a major decision.”

“I am the only child descended from two other generations of only children. This means that I am, quite literally, the end of the family line on my father’s side,” she says. “I have no siblings, have yet to marry, and my only living relative is my mother.”

HealthyWay

Stark knew early on that this was her path. “I believe that it was a good decision. I see the turbulence of today’s world, its instability and tensions,” she says. “I’m not sure I’d want to bring a child up in this world. As an idealist, the reality of
what and who we are has fallen far short of my expectations.”

She’s enjoyed the freedom this decision has granted her to do what she wants with her time. Not having children has allowed her to focus full-force on her career and education.

HealthyWay

Her career has allowed her to make her mark on the world. “I work with young adults on a daily basis,” she says, “so I am still shaping the future generations.”

“My sole purpose in life isn’t to just bear children.”

Ki “Tini” Jones is a 40-year-old personal trainer based in Maryland. As a girl, she wanted to get married and have children—”two boys and a girl to be exact”—and the pressure to procreate was intensified by the fact that she was the only daughter and niece in a large family of boys.

But, moving through her early 20s changed her perspective. “I quickly realized that I was just getting to know the ‘adult’ me,” she says. “I wanted to focus on career, travel, and experienc[ing] things.”

HealthyWay

Meanwhile, she observed the changes that children brought and became more certain of her decision. “People around me were having children and dynamics of friendships were changing,” she says.

“Most of the people that had kids said they undoubtedly loved their kids but often complained like they were being saddled down. I began to enjoy not having the responsibility and it allowed me to focus on myself.”

Though she did marry, she says her now ex-husband got a vasectomy before they even dated.

Jones’ decision has not always been received without pushback. “My mom would often drop baby hints and even once said I was selfish not to have kids,” she recalls. “I told her I thought it would be selfish to have kids and not be the best mother I could be to them.”

Her concern that she might feel burdened by—and thus neglect—her own children is no indication of her feelings toward children generally. “People think because I chose not to have children I don’t like them and that’s the furthest from the truth,” she says.

“I love their curiosity and energy!” She often volunteers with organizations like Living Classrooms, which allows her to work with children.

HealthyWay

Jones says she doesn’t allow anyone to make her feel “less than” as a woman for her decision not to have kids. “There are many facets to ‘mothering’ that don’t involve carrying a child. I’m a nurturer, a caregiver, a lover, a friend, a mentor, and an influencer,” she says.

“There is so much more to womanhood than bearing children. My sole purpose in life isn’t to just bear children.”

Her life’s purpose, she says, is “far greater than my womb.”

“I saw kids and all the things they need as clutter.”

Dating and relationship transformation expert Lisa Concepcion is a 46-year-old entrepreneur who helps people shape their love lives. She says determining at age 31 not to have children was the best decision of her life.

“I was married when I made this decision,” she says. “I felt that society pressures us into checking off the common to do list of life, which says: married by 30 (check), homeowner shortly after (check), six-figure income (check), kids and nannies in the ‘burbs (enter screech sound of brakes).”

“I was raised by very controlling parents so I saw marriage as a badge of adulthood,” she says.

“I lived at home after college until I was 26 and moved out six months before my wedding. Reveling in my freedom and a deep desire for my own space, the last thing I wanted was clutter, and I saw kids and all the things they need (strollers, baby seat, childproofed home, bottles, food, diapers and on and on) as clutter.”

HealthyWay

Through her practice, LoveQuest Coaching, Concepcion has seen that, along with chores and schedules, parenting is one of the top contributors to relationship stress. “They feel their lives revolve around kids,” she says.

“This was something I saw when my own friends started to have kids when we were in our early thirties. The interesting [thing] to note is that despite my then-husband’s dual income, no kids, [and] freedom to do what we wanted, we were still confined to the cookie-cutter mindset of 9 to 6 slavery and long commutes to and from jobs that never spoke to our passions.”

“This misalignment sadly led to realizing we were out of connection with ourselves.” After 17 years of marriage, they divorced.

She tells this story to point out that “childfreedom doesn’t make a couple divorce proof.”

She teaches that without proper self-love, an undue burden is often placed on one or both spouses to make the other happy. “Thank GOD I didn’t have kids,” she says.

“Unlike a spouse, I wouldn’t be able to divorce my kids.”

She now describes herself as “blissfully childfree” and in a relationship with a 52-year-old who is also childfree. The couple lives in the South Beach area of Miami, Florida.

HealthyWay

“We enjoy ourselves and live what we call a vacay-life while most people our age are stressing out over their kids’ college exams and tuition,” she says.

“My boyfriend and I are thinking about where we’re going for happy hour and how I can create coaching programs I can teach from my chaise lounge on my terrace.”

How Financial Infidelity Is Affecting American Marriages

When my husband proposed, I knew I had to come clean about the debt I’d been hiding while we were dating. I’d accrued a substantial amount of student loan debt in graduate school that I was struggling to pay off.

I didn’t immediately tell him about my debt for several reasons. I was embarrassed that I’d amassed a huge amount of student debt and wasn’t even using my degree.

My husband is also very financially savvy, and I was mildly afraid he’d break up with me if he knew how much debt he would be taking on when we got married.

Despite my fears and frustrations, we eventually had a frank conversation about our finances before we tied the knot, and looking back, I realize our marriage might have depended on it.

Till Death (or Debt) Do Us Part

According to personal finance expert Debbi King, “52 percent of couples divorce and 80 percent of those are over financial issues.”

King says financial infidelity is one of the biggest obstacles a couple can face when trying to save their marriage.

That’s why it was so important for me to come clean to my now-husband before we walked down the aisle. I didn’t want my financial secrets to become a problem in our marriage.

HealthyWay

So what exactly is financial infidelity?

Justin Lavelle, COO of BeenVerified.com explains, “Financial infidelity is when your spouse lies to you about how money is being spent, or hides secret accounts from you, or makes significant spending decisions without your knowledge.”

The current average age at marriage in America is 27 for women and 29 for men. By the time most people tie the knot, they have graduated from college and may even own a home. Adulting can be awesome, but it often comes with hefty student loan debt or a mortgage payment.

Many times financial infidelity begins because a spouse is embarrassed—like I was—by the amount of debt they’ve accrued but are too ashamed to tell their partner before marriage.

In other situations, financial infidelity begins more innocuously.

HealthyWay

James Nowlin, author of The Purposeful Millionaire: 52 Rules for Creating a Life of Happiness and Wealth Now, says financial infidelity typically starts out small. At first a spouse might hide a seemingly insignificant purchase, like a trip to the nail salon or a new golf club. Those hidden purchases go unnoticed and can snowball into a mountain of hidden spending.

The Popular Man, Jonathan Bennett, points out, “The deceived partner might not fully realize that his or her bills and credit are entangled…until it’s too late.”

Derek Hagen, a financial planner with Fireside Financial, notes, “The biggest bond at risk from financial infidelity is trust.”

HealthyWay

Hagen recalls a scenario in which “a husband who had his hours cut in half at work (effectively a 50 percent pay cut) … didn’t want to tell his wife about it so he took out loans to hide this fact. Eventually he couldn’t keep getting loans so it was discovered. They are still together, but it was a rough couple of years’ worth of marriage counseling that got them here.”

When financial secrets in a marriage are discovered, communication and trust—which are two of the most important factors in any healthy marriage—can be damaged beyond repair, according to relationship therapist Kimberly Hershenson.

But is it really cheating?

Keeping purchases a secret from your spouse or hiding student debt may seem harmless. You’re paying your monthly loan installment, and that visit to the nail salon isn’t going to make or break your family’s monthly budget.

After all, it’s not like you physically cheated on your spouse, right?

Well, it depends on your definition of cheating.

Bennett weighs in: “Financial infidelity isn’t cheating in the traditional sense. However, in many ways financial infidelity is just as harmful, since it can create extra stress and have long-lasting, damaging effects on both the individual and the relationship.”

HealthyWay

However, therapist and divorce mediator Toni Coleman believes that “[financial infidelity] is a form of cheating because it involves deceit that betrays a partner’s trust.”

Even if a couple’s financial problems seem insurmountable, a marriage can survive financial infidelity if both partners are willing to put in the work, says Hershenson.

Here are tips for getti
ng your marriage back on track, straight from financial and relationship experts:

1. Talk it out.

Open and honest communication between spouses is the first step toward recovery after financial infidelity.

“Communication and trust are two of the most important factors that make a healthy marriage,” Hershenson reiterates. “Without these two factors it is impossible to have a meaningful relationship.”

Money-saving expert Andrea Woroch agrees. “Communication is crucial. …Couples should start talking about money when their relationship goes from casual to committed. Discuss future life goals (both short-term and long-term); learn savings and spending styles; discuss your family’s attitude toward money; and even discuss debt balances. Figuring out where you two share common values and where you are on opposite sides of the spectrum will alleviate tension while helping you eventually align your financial views.”

We did it! Click the link to see Nelnet try to foil our last payment!

A post shared by Jen • Debt Freedom Blogger (@savingwithspunk) on

Attorney Leslie Tayne agrees. “Finding the cause of the problem is the first step to understand[ing] why and how the financial infidelity occurred. Asking questions will help married couples determine if they are on the same page in working towards reaching their financial goals. …After getting the answers, then the couple should immediately start evaluating how they are going to work together to resolve the financial issues, rebuild trust, and get back on track financially.”

2. Build healthy financial transparency.

King recalls her first marriage: “My husband didn’t control every dollar, but he did make negative comments about every clothing purchase that I made. It was very degrading. Therefore, I hid many of those purchases. And yes, something that simple is financial infidelity. …We want to avoid the problem so we lie about it or hide things instead of facing the issue head on.”

King committed financial infidelity because of underlying issues in her marriage. In order to move forward, Woroch says it is imperative that couples get to the root of why the financial infidelity occurred in the first place.

Once a spouse comes clean about why the financial infidelity was committed, both partners can start working together to repair their marriage.

HealthyWay

King suggests that couples moving forward from financial infidelity practice transparency. “If you have already committed financial infidelity, the first step is to come clean. Without transparency the problem will just get worse. And just like any other time trust is broken, you have to work on rebuilding it. Be honest about what the real issue is and move forward from there—setting up boundaries and guardrails that both parties are happy with.”

Tayne agrees. “Performing financial tasks together, for example, balancing the checkbook, re-evaluating the budget, reviewing credit card statements, can help couples form trust again when there is transparency. With any type of betrayal in a marriage, re-building trust won’t happen overnight, but if both parties are willing to work hard, the trust can be recovered.”

3. Make it a financial date night.

Who says date nights can’t be fun and practical at the same time? Woroch recommends setting aside one night a month to review your finances, including budgets, bills, and savings goals as a married couple. Financial date night is a good time to bring up money issues that are causing tension in the relationship, and these date nights can help stop financial infidelity before it begins.

HealthyWay

Lavelle agrees that setting a regular date night to discuss financial goals and how each spouse will contribute to those goals is helpful in getting a marriage back on track after financial infidelity. And, Lavelle says, there’s no reason financial date night can’t be fun. Cue up some good background music, order your favorite takeout, and spend some unhurried time together considering where you are financially—and where you want to be going.

4. Double down on debt.

One of the worst things a couple can do in their marriage is ignore debt. Woroch recommends that married couples make a plan to tackle debt together and put aside any embarrassment or hard feelings about the amount of debt they owe. “Couples often neglect to share information about their debts … However, when you’re in a serious relationship … you’re also tying the other person into your financial issues so it’s important to
put it all out on the table.”

HealthyWay

Lavelle says that not everyone can easily accept working together as a team, especially if the spouse who has come clean about their financial infidelity feels attacked or belittled. It’s not very romantic, but marriage legally binds two people together. That means that for better or worse, individual debts and financial setbacks become a problem for both partners. A couple must find a way to tackle debt together.

Woroch continues, “For future borrowing needs, banks and lenders may pull credit reports and credit histories of both spouses, so it’s important to understand one another’s current debt and credit situations.”

Most spouses who commit financial infidelity don’t intend to hurt their partner. Yet that is what happens when secrets are kept in a marriage.

If you have significant financial issues and aren’t married yet, summon the support and strength you need to discuss them before the big day arrives.

It’s a hard conversation to have, but trying to save your marriage after financial infidelity is so much harder.

Bridal Store Employees Reveal 10 Things You Need To Know Before You Go Shopping

When I bought my wedding dress, I knew I had broken a big rule of wedding dress shopping.
Even though the consultants at David’s Bridal had warned me to do otherwise, I left with a dress that was two sizes too small.
In the end, it worked out in my favor: I lost 20 pounds and was thrilled about how I looked in my dress on my wedding day.
Still, I can’t help but laugh when I look back on the dress shopping experience. I was 19 years old, newly engaged, and completely clueless when it came to the “dos” and “don’ts” of wedding dress shopping.
Half an hour into my fitting, my consultants were visibly annoyed with my lack of dress knowledge, the fact that I had done zero research, and especially that I was wearing the “wrong” undergarments. (Apparently a sports bra is not the ideal choice for a sweetheart neckline. Who knew?)

HealthyWay
istock.com/Bosca78

Despite all that, I had to be one of the easier brides in the store. I tried on four dresses and was was on my way with my chosen gown in under 60 minutes.
Still, a wedding dress just might be the biggest clothing purchase of a woman’s life, and there are a lot of dress-shopping expectations most brides-to-be don’t know or understand.
Perhaps one of the biggest misunderstandings out there is that working in bridal sales is a magical experience in which fairytale moments take place every day.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjubXNOnbAk/
But—you guessed it—that isn’t the reality.
In fact, bridal store employee and Reddit user quesaritoqueen recently started an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread to set the record straight. Like many Reddit users, we were intrigued, so we dug into the industry to verify her claims.
Here’s the best advice we got from insiders.

1. Leave your bridesmaids at home.

For some brides, shopping for a wedding dress quickly transforms into in all-day event, complete with lattes, a restaurant reservation, and the attendance of every member of their wedding party.

Although it might be common practice to bring your bridesmaids along for a fitting, Sharon Miller, owner of the Gown Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri, suggests brides-to-be leave the crowd behind.
“You should limit the number of people that you bring to your appointment,” she says. “You want to bring close knit family members and maybe a close friend if you really value their opinion and know they’re going to give you the very best advice.”

HealthyWay
istock.com/Tomwang112

Outside of those few people, it’s probably best to meet for lunch with the rest of the crew after the shopping is through, since Miller revealed that there simply isn’t enough room for a large crowd to fit politely in most bridal salons.

2. Don’t just show up.

Here’s a dress shopping faux pas newly engaged me certainly committed: showing up at a bridal store and expecting to be seen the same day.
According to Miller, the best approach is the opposite of that: Make your appointment as far out as possible, especially if you are dealing with schedule limitations.

HealthyWay
istock.com/kokouu

“Once you are engaged, quickly make your appointment with your bridal salon,” she advises. “A lot of bridal salons fill up really fast for the weekends and if there is a certain day you want to shop, say if a close family member lives out of town, it is good to make your appointment far in advance so you can be sure you can shop on the day and time that is convenient for you. A lot the time, stores can’t get you in at the last minute.”

3. Have a vision in mind…

A stylist’s job is to help you find a dress that matches your overall vision for your wedding, according to Miller. She suggests that brides come to the appointment prepared.
Do some research and make a few decisions in advance. Be prepared to discuss your venue (or the ones you have in mind) and other specific design elements you love, whether those are colors, accessories, or the shoes you’re dead set on wearing down the aisle.

“When you sit down with your consultant at your appointment, the consultant is going to ask you questions about fabrics that you like or necklines that you love. Do you like an interesting back? Beading or no beading? All of the information that you can share with the consultant at your first meeting is going to help that consultant to be able to pull the gowns that you love,” she advises.

4. …but don’t be stubborn.

Knowing what you want before your appointment will give your stylist a lot of information to work with when they start pulling gowns, but don’t have your heart so set on a style that you aren’t willing to consider your stylist’s advice.

HealthyWay
istock.com/PeopleImages

“Brides should always try on multiple styles of dresses,” said Shannon Whitney Anson, founder and principal planner at Destination Upstate. “Even if they love the look of a mermaid dress, they may find out that a mermaid dress just isn’t flattering for their figure. Being open minded to try on a few dresses that might not look as good on the hanger may turn out to be the perfect dress on their body.”

5. Know when to say no.

If you are going to avoid any one mistake while being fitted for a dress, make it this one.
Don’t try on dresses you can’t afford!
Many bridal shops have gowns intended for a broad spectrum of budgets and it is important that you let your stylists know up front what you can and can’t spend, Miller shares.

Oh hi @randyfenoli ‘ We’re so excited to have you back at #Kleinfeld for your trunk show weekend! ‘

A post shared by Kleinfeld Bridal (@kleinfeldbridal) on

“A lot of salons might have price points from $1,500 and up. If you have a $2,000 budget, you want to let that consultant know that so she’s not pulling gowns and you fall in love with something that’s not in your budget and become unhappy because you can’t have that gown.”
So what about the claims that bridal store employees are trying to coerce you to break your budget? That may depend on where you’re shopping.

HealthyWay
istock.com/IPGGutenbergUKLtd

No store openly advertises a policy of pushing brides beyond their budgets, but remember, the power to stay out of an overpriced dress (No—you shouldn’t even try it on!) is in your hands.

6. Realize you’re not the only one feeling the pressure.

As a bride-to-be, you’re feeling pressured to find the perfect dress, stay within a reasonable budget, and dodge the awkwardness of winding up in something that makes you feel, well, awkward.

On the other side of the equation is your consultant, who, depending on the setting, might be working under an oppressive commission structure that has them more stressed out about their next paycheck than charmed by your vision for the big day.

HealthyWay
istock.com/kkshepel

The fact of the matter is, some big bridal chains really do operate under intense commission models.
In her AMA thread, quesaritoqueen shared that the pressure to make a sale, no matter what it took, was a common expectation from management.
HealthyWay
istock.com/M_a_y_a

According to another former bridal chain employee, consultants at the store where she worked are paid minimum wage plus a 20 percent commission on all their sales. However, they don’t make a penny in commission unless they have met a sales goal of $10,000 within their two-week pay period.
Since the average dress at at this particular insider’s chain cost $500, a consultant would have to sell at least 20 dresses every two weeks to make more than minimum wage.
HealthyWay
istock.com/shironosov

“If you don’t hit that threshold, you get zero commission. ZERO,” the former employee explained. “You could make $9,999 in sales, but you would only get paid your minimum wage for the hours you had put in. The ‘best’ part is that if you didn’t hit your target, you would get a warning or reprimand. If you got three of those in a row—so after six weeks of not hitting your target—you could lose your job!”
The result of this type of high-pressure environment is lower quality customer service for brides-to-be and maybe the feeling that you can’t trust your consultant’s seemingly helpful intentions.
HealthyWay
istock.com/FurmanAnna

This former employee confesses that ultimately brides with higher budgets got the most attention from sales consultants.
“It is true what others said on [the Reddit] thread, that a lot of consultants will mentally check out once they find out a bride has a super low budget, especially if they have a more promising appointment going on across the store.”

7. Shopping local might pay off.

While the thought of getting inferior treatment due to your budget is disconcerting, brides should know that not everyone in the industry is thinking dollar signs as they zip you up, especially not in smaller boutiques.

Vanessa Diaz, who spent her college years working in bridal sales and now works as a creative consultant, says that her experience in an independently owned bridal store was much more positive.
“I didn’t work for [a] corporate store, so I am not able to speak on their experiences,” she says. “Of course, all stores want you to sell. You make commission off it in many cases. Since I was an independently owned store…I was able to make the customer experience less sales driven.”
Some stores, like the Gown Gallery, which is independently owned and has a reputation for exceptional customer service, eschew the commission-based model altogether.

HealthyWay
istock.com/SbytovaMN

“We don’t work on commission,” Miller tells HealthyWay. “We never have. I had one bride say, ‘I knew this was what wedding shopping was supposed to be like.’ That’s what counts to us.”
Takeaway: Between researching silhouettes and booking your first appointment, do a little digging to find out which salon in your area has the most personable staff and a business model that will support your shopping experience.

8. Pay attention to the details.

If staying within budget is a big concern, it is a good idea to pay attention to what you’re spending after you’ve found your dress. According to another former bridal chain employee, consultants weren’t explicitly told to push brides to break their budget on a dress, but they were expected to upsell once dress selection had taken place.

HealthyWay
istock.com/TatianaNurieva

“We were pressured more to sell the ‘extras’ in addition to the dress, stuff that adds up fast… A sash, a veil, a tiara, shoes, all that jazz.”

9. Don’t put it off.

If you are waiting to shop for your wedding dress, maybe until you lose a few more pounds or have nailed down your venue, you could be putting yourself at risk for a wedding dress emergency. A few months might feel like all the time in the world to order your dress and have alterations made, but the truth is, shopping for a wedding gown is completely different from typical clothing shopping.

HealthyWay
istock.com/sjharmon

“The biggest thing women do not realize is they need to order their dress six months in advance,” says Diaz. “Many manufacturers have them made abroad to your measurements and some will have more custom measurements than others.”
She also suggested that once you have ordered your dress you make your first fitting appointment for two months before your wedding day, just in case you need more than one fitting.
HealthyWay
istock.com/cglade

Your final fitting should be roughly a month before your wedding day.

10. Consider staying home on Saturdays.

Brides who are looking for a one-on-one experience with a consultant should consider making a weekday appointment, since most bridal stores are swamped on Saturdays. Even independent store Gown Gallery is typically completely booked on weekends.

HealthyWay
istock.com/jacoblund

“When I’ve had friends thinking about shopping there, I always tell them ‘Do not go on a Saturday,’ because the place is an absolute zoo,” shared a former bridal chain employee. “As a consultant I had three bridal appointments at the same time one Saturday because we were so busy and it was a nightmare for all of us—my three brides, their entourages, and me!”
