24 Beauty Hacks That Will Totally Change Your Life

Looking great can be a tough and tedious job! It can take hours to pick out the right tools and learn how to use them properly. Makeup artists take tons of classes and work to gain years of experience to perfect their trade. You can learn how to be your own makeup pro—in less time—by learning some tricks of the trade.
HealthyWay
Does your face often end up looking like a 2-year-old was your makeup artist? Are you tired of spending your entire paycheck on beauty products that don’t work? Try these easy makeup hacks—and go from frustrated to fancy!

Check your makeup in different lighting.

Nothing looks worse than uneven makeup. Since makeup looks different in different lighting, be sure to check it in the car, in the bathroom, and outside.
If you don’t have time to run outside with your handheld mirror, of course, you could try this remarkably affordable lighted mirror. Its warm LED lighting mimics daylight and seven-times magnification will help you apply your makeup like a pro.

Get the smoky eye effect without all the work.

Dark eyes look great but achieving the look, flawlessly, is a challenge. Try this hack next time you’re going out.

The South Beach Blog

Choose your favorite eyeliner, and draw a hashtag (or number sign) at an angle on the outer corner of your lid. Then smudge and blend it in with your other eyeshadow.

Use a white base coat instead of clear.

In order to make your nail polish color stand out a little more, use white polish instead of clear.

HealthyWay
Polly Polish

It brightens the color and still protects your nail from discoloration.

Get off glitter polish with ease.

Instead of using base coat, swipe a coat of white glue (like Elmer’s) on your nails. Next time you want to remove your glitter polish, you won’t need polish remover—it peels right off!

Sweep mascara toward your nose, not upwards.

Most women make the mistake of applying mascara in an upward fashion.

If you want thicker looking lashes and eyes that pop, angle your brush inward, not upward.

Use white eyeliner all over your lid to make eyeshadow stand out.

The color white helps colors on eyes pop, like it does on nails.

HealthyWay
Fashion Lady

Apply white eyeliner all over your lid, then apply your eyeshadow on top of it.

Turn a regular pencil eyeliner into gel liner.

Want soft, smooth lines?

Place the tip of your eyeliner over a match or other flame for a second, wait 15 seconds for it to cool, then gently apply it.

Use t-shirts instead of towels to dry your hair.

If your hair seems to always be frizzy and look untamed—no matter how much product you try to weigh it down with—you might want to try drying it a different way!

HealthyWay
Just Curly

Instead of using a towel to mop your hair up, wrap it in a soft, cotton t-shirt. It’ll keep your curls smooth and under control.
Even better, pick up a few of these ultra-wicking microfiber turban wraps. They pull moisture out of your hair for a frizz-free ‘do, and they free you to finish getting ready instead of laboring with the blow dryer. This pack of two even throws in a detangler comb for the final step.

Keep the mascara brush you love.

Love the mascara brush that you have, but don’t love the actual mascara? You can keep it! Just clean it with soap and warm water, then let it dry thoroughly.

HealthyWay
Make Beauty Simple

It’ll be ready to use again with other tubes of mascara.

Apply glue to your fake lashes a better way.

Applying glue to your fake eyelashes can be somewhat of a nightmare, leaving you with glue everywhere and your lashes sticking to everything.

HealthyWay
Priceza

Try placing the glue on the edge of a bobby pin and use it to apply the glue quickly and easily to lashes.

Set lipstick with powder.

There’s no need to buy drying, “24-hour” lipsticks in order to try to get your lipstick to stay. Try it the old-fashioned way!

HealthyWay
A Beautiful Mess

Apply your lipstick, then place a tissue over your lips. Dust translucent powder over the tissue on your lips and you’re ready to go!

Get the perfect pout.

Does your pout end up looking more pathetic than perfect? You can make it flawless with this easy tip.
Choose a lip liner in the same color as your lipstick and line your entire lips, ending in an “x” at the top. Fill in your lips with lipstick for the perfect shaped pout.

Make your foundation even smoother.

Do you find that your concealer ends up looking cakey and unnatural? Place a little on the back of your hand and mix it with a little of your favorite moisturizer. It’ll go on smoothly!

Keep your lipstick off your teeth.

Every woman hates lipstick on her teeth! Next time you’re heading out, clean off excess lipstick by putting your finger in your mouth, closing your lips around your finger, and gently pulling it out. The excess will get on your finger, not your teeth.

Conceal those under-eye circles perfectly.

Most women place concealer in dots, directly under the eye. This brightens up that small area but ends up making the rest of your face look “flat.”

HealthyWay
Cosmopolitan

Try applying it in a triangle shape starting the widest part at the base of your bottom eyelashes, then extending the tip to the bottom of your cheeks. This will hide redness, even out your skin tone, and brighten your whole face.

Use a spoon or credit card to get perfect wings.

Having trouble getting the perfect wing on your eye? Place the base of the spoon at an angle, against your eye and make a “cat eye” stroke.

HealthyWay
StyleCraze

Then press the rounded part of the spoon against your eyelid and wing your eyeliner stroke against the edge.

Use a spoon to keep mascara off of your face.

Have trouble keeping mascara off of your face when you apply it to your bottom lashes? Use a spoon to help! Hold the rounded part below and against your lower lids, and apply it. The excess will go on the spoon, not your lashes.

Curl your lashes with a heated eyelash curler.

Give your eyelashes even more va-va-voom by heating your eyelash curler before you use it. Use your hairdryer to heat it for a couple of seconds, let it cool…then curl. The heat will set the curl.

Create your own lip gloss out of broken eyeshadow.

Shattered eye shadow? Don’t throw it out! Make your own one-of-a-kind lip color in just a few easy steps.

Plump your lashes with face powder.

Plump lashes are in, baby! But most mascaras don’t do the job nearly as well as you’d like.

HealthyWay
Kathryn Wirsing/Elle

Try dusting a little translucent powder on your lashes in between mascara coats. Just be sure to use a little at a time so that it doesn’t get in your eyes.

Fix French manicures with a rubber band.

French manicures are beautiful and clean, problem is—they last about a day before you need to head back to the salon. Save time and money by doing your own touch-ups!

HealthyWay
Paper Raindrops

Place a rubber band at the base of the nail color tip and paint the tip. The rubber band ensures a perfect, flawless line.

Use dry shampoo at night.

As handy as dry shampoo is, it can leave your hair looking clumpy and feeling icky. Try spraying your hair before you go to bed. As you move around it’ll evenly distribute and you’ll wake up with clean and voluminous hair.

Use leave-in conditioner right after you shower.

Do leave in conditioners often leave your hair feeling weighed down? Can’t go without it? Try this hack!

HealthyWay
iStock

Apply the conditioner as soon as you get out of the shower when your hair is sopping wet, then use that t-shirt we mentioned to dry your hair. The shirt will evenly distribute the conditioner and also mop up any extra.
If you took our advice and picked up those microfiber turban wraps, by the way, you could use that instead to save even more time.

Mix leave-in conditioner with gel for soft, supple hair.

Hate that crunchy, sticky feel of gel on your hair but still need the control and moisture? In your hand, mix your favorite leave-in conditioner with gel—it’ll leave your hair feeling soft and manageable.

10 Signs You Have A Toxic Parent

Maybe you’re finding your dad to be a little more annoying than usual or you’ve looked around and noticed that your mom’s not like other moms. Maybe you’re finally realizing that it may not be normal to hide in your bedroom or screen your parents’ calls. Or maybe your SO is like “WTH with your home life?”
The sad truth is, any kind of relationship can be toxic, including ones between parents and their children. The technical definition of a narcissistic or toxic parent is someone who lives through, is possessive of, and/or engages in marginalizing competition with their offspring.
Basically, life is all about them and everything they do (or want you to do) is done to satisfy their needs. Oftentimes, it’s hard to recognize a toxic parent because most are disguised as caring people who immerse themselves in their children’s lives.
HealthyWay
The involvement is a facade and what appears as devotion is not a selfless act but an effort to control and manipulate their kids through very close relationships with them. But how do you know if this is really what’s going on?
The problem with trying to figure out if you were affected by a toxic parent is that it takes the ability to self-reflect. You probably grew up thinking that the behavior in your house was normal and it may not be until you grew and matured that you had the ability to recognize that something was “off” in your house.
Unfortunately, the road to healing is often long and lonely because no toxic parent wants to admit that they have issues. The child of such a parent must muster up the strength and courage to stand up and make a change.
The good news is, if you’ve been raised by a toxic parent, you can be happy! Studies show that through therapy, you can overcome your abusive childhood and become an even better parent. The first step is to recognize it.
Think maybe you got “toxic parents”? Here are nine signs to help you decide (and deal).

1. Their feelings always come before yours.

A good parent will consider how everyone in the family in affected when making decisions. The toxic parent will consider only his feelings and how decisions affect him, as those are the ones that count the most.
Has your parent said things like “It’s not enough to make me happy just to know that you’re happy”? Has your mother complained about the crappy nurse at the doctor’s office and how it affects her, as you’re lying in pain on the table? Red flags.

2. They don’t recognize your boundaries.

Normal parents can be interested and curious, but a toxic parent will take it too far and stomp over healthy boundaries that a child sets because they believe it’s their right to.
HealthyWay
Has your parent busted open your bedroom door whenever they want? Do they endlessly pry into your phone and your private life? Do they listen in on your conversations and question you about them later?

3. They control you using guilt.

A little guilt is part of normal parenting, but a lot of it is a problem. The narcissist parent is interested in maintaining domination of their kids. They want to control their actions as well as their decisions, and they’ll use whatever means to make sure that they maintain. This often includes using guilt or money to get one to heed.
Has your parent ever given you a gift then expected something in return? Have they often told you how much they’ve given up for you?

4. They demand your attention.

It’s normal for parents to expect children to answer timely but narcissistic parents demand constant attention and instant gratification. They feel threatened by anyone or anything that threatens their control of their kids.
Has your parent blown up your phone so many times that you’ve had to shut it off? Have they interrupted your phone calls and acted disrespectfully?

5. They don’t talk to you.

A healthy relationship involves discussing issues openly, leading to feelings of security. Many times, the toxic parent will immaturely shut down communication in the form of ignoring, in order to get what they want.
Have you ever not agreed with your father only to have him throw a fit and not answer any of your questions? Has your mother locked herself in the bedroom in response to something that you did or said?

6. They take away their love.

In a healthy parent/child relationship, love is unconditional and isn’t based upon their actions. The toxic parent will use love as a bargaining tool to get a child to act the way they want.
HealthyWay
Has your mom ever said, “If you don’t go to the school I choose, then you no longer have my support”? Have you felt that if you didn’t act a certain way then your parents would stop caring for you?

7. They’re overly critical.

Normal parents want the best for their kids and to help guide them. Narcissists “help” their children avoid mistakes by criticizing, in belief their “suggestions” aide their kids to achieve perfection, which is a reflection of themselves.
Are you afraid to show your mom your new outfit in fear that she’ll find everything wrong with it? Have you hesitated to try something new in fear you’ll fail in your parents’ eyes?

8. They compete with you.

Friendly competition in a relationship is fun and healthy and can contribute to good self esteem. Narcissistic parents can turn competition unhealthy when they see their child’s achievements as a threat to their own self worth. They become jealous.
Has your parent ever said to you, “You’re pretty, but my hair was so much thicker than yours as a child”? Has your dad said to you, “You’re close, but you’ll never be as fast as I was”?

9. They make you responsible for their happiness and well-being.

Normal parenting involves happy and sad times, with or without children. A toxic parent will turn their child into their substitute BFF or parent in order to take care of both their physical and emotional needs.
They make unreasonable demands of their children often forcing them to choose between them and their relationships with their friends or significant others. They often make them sacrifice healthy extracurricular activities and interests by guilting them into taking care of them.
The toxic parent can mask it as quality bonding when in reality what they’ve done is established an unhealthy relationship that doesn’t allow their child to grow into a happy, healthy independent individual.
Has your mom said to you “why are you going out with your friends? I thought the weekends are for us?” Or has your dad said, “you like your boyfriend more than me?”

10. You’re still scared of them.

In a healthy relationship, one should be able to be themselves without fear that they’ll be criticized, made fun of, talked down to or disrespected.
HealthyWay
Toxic parents, on the other hand, will use hurtful tactics like these, even on adult children, in order to maintain their hold. Especially when they think their kids are growing up and they’re “losing them.” As a result, children learn to be fearful of their parents, often expecting some sort of emotional, physical or financial punishment.
They learn to curb their behavior in order to please the toxic parent. Many children describe “walking on eggshells” waiting to see if their behavior was acceptable or if they should expect retribution.
Are you afraid to express your opinion or voice yourself in fear of being disrespected? Does your heart jump every time the phone rings because it may be your mom or dad calling?

8 Underwear Mistakes That Can Mess With Your Health (And Style)

You might think that just remembering to put on underwear each day is good enough, but we’re here to tell you otherwise. Believe it or not, some of these mistakes can even be harmful to your health.

We all know that wearing underwear for more than one day is a big no-no, but did you know there are mistakes just as detrimental to your health and style that you could be making every day?

HealthyWay
iStock

No, we’re not just talking about the temporary embarrassment of wearing black underwear with a pair of white jeans or the slight discomfort of wearing something too skimpy. The wrong habits when it comes to buying, washing, and wearing underwear could be causing you lasting issues that are more than just embarrassing.

They’re too small.

Many women might not think there’s anything too wrong with wearing underwear that are a bit small—after all, they’re the only ones who’ll know, right? However, aside from not giving yourself a muffin top, there are plenty of good reasons to make sure you’re buying yourself underwear that fits.

HealthyWay
iStock

Underwear that’s too small can keep your downtown area hot and humid, which is essentially the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and infections. The same goes for wearing pantyhose often, too.

The Solution?

To make sure you’re getting yourself the right size, shop by brand and determine what your size is in that label.

HealthyWay
iStock

Don’t buy one size across the board just because you wear it in one brand or style of underwear. They can be incredibly different from company to company.

They’re washed with scented detergents.

If you’re like most people, you probably just toss your underwear in with the rest of your laundry and call it a day. Unfortunately, though, the scented soaps and fabric softeners you might use for your jeans and shirts can actually be wreaking havoc on your lady bits.

HealthyWay
iStock

The skin down there tends to be more sensitive than on the rest of your body, and it can be irritated incredibly easily—even by something as simple as a scented soap. Not only that, but the fragrances and chemicals in things like dryer sheets and detergents can even make your skin burn or itch.

The Solution?

Try to wash all of your underwear separately from the rest of your clothes in detergents and fabric softeners that are unscented.

HealthyWay
iStock

Even better, look for products that are labeled hypoallergenic, so you can be sure they’re free of harsh irritants found in most commercial laundry products.

They’re not cotton.

In a perfect world, our underwear would be made of nothing but cotton, but most people wear pairs that are at least lined with the natural fabric. If you’re not one of them, it’s time to go shopping, especially if you’re someone who often finds themselves with some type of infection or irritation down there.

HealthyWay
iStock

Lace, polyester, and other synthetic fabrics can hold in moisture and heat, which can not only cause irritation but create the perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to hang around in. Unfortunately, even silk is a culprit.

The Solution?

Try to stick with underwear made from only cotton as much as you can, or it least make sure it’s lined with cotton.

HealthyWay
iStock

If you have to wear underwear made from other materials or you refuse to get rid of your favorite cotton-free pair, try to save them only for special occasions or for shorter nights out.

They move around.

Women turn to thong underwear for a lot of different reasons, and one of them is because they hate the dreaded VPLs—visible panty lines. It’s an understandable desire, not wanting your underwear to bunch up and create lines on the back of your pants, but this type of skimpy underwear does more harm than good.

HealthyWay
Aunty Acid

Not only are they typically pretty tight, but they can also shift throughout the day, especially if you’re active. Unlike other underwear, the back part of a thong can sit against you skin and transfer some pretty gnarly bacteria from back to front and leave you with an infection.

The Solution?

If VPLs are your issue, you’re in luck, because companies now sell many types of underwear in fabric that is designed to have a seamless look.

HealthyWay
iStock

If you like thongs because of the skimpy look, however, try out the “cheeky” underwear style, which is kind of like a thicker version that won’t rub against you in the back.

They’re always stained.

Hey, every woman probably has at least one pair of period panties; no one’s judging you for wearing underwear that you’re not afraid of having ruined, if you know what we mean.

HealthyWay
iStock

However, when it comes to your everyday discharge, it’s important to pay attention to any changes you may notice, and a lot of women don’t. Depending on what’s causing the change, you might see more or less discharge, or it could be thicker or thinner, or even a different color from normal.

The Solution?

If you notice anything going on down under that seems abnormal for you, make sure to get it checked. Discharge that’s green or gray in color could point to a common infection called bacterial vaginosis, whereas thick and clumpy discharge might point to a yeast infection.

HealthyWay
iStock

And don’t hesitate to see your doctor if you experience any excessive itching or burning, especially if it’s persistent and keeps getting worse.

You sweat then sit.

We’ve all been there—you hit the gym for an intense workout, then run some errands on your way home and sit around for a bit, all while in those same sweaty clothes. Although you may be planning on taking a shower later, you should still change out of your workout clothes as soon as possible, especially when it comes to your underwear.

HealthyWay
iStock

Not only can tight, sweat-soaked clothes irritate your skin, but they can also create the perfect environment for bacteria to flourish in and around your lady bits. If your sweaty underwear is rubbing against your skin, it can also lead to some pretty unfortunate chafing.

The Solution?

If you don’t feel like changing your outfit entirely after working out, at least bring a spare pair of underwear to change into before you head home.

HealthyWay
iStock

When you finally get there, try not to delay when it comes to taking a shower and getting into some fresh clothes.

You sleep in them.

This doesn’t necessarily apply to all women who sleep in underwear, but it does affect a good number of them. Wearing underwear throughout the night doesn’t seem to affect some women at all, but for others, it can actually irritate any existing conditions they have or cause them to flare up.

HealthyWay
iStock

For example, any woman who is prone to yeast infections might find that sleeping in underwear causes them to develop one, most likely because their underwear is trapping moisture and heat as they sleep.

The Solution?

If you’re comfortable with it, sleep commando! It can help keep your downstairs area cool throughout the night and promote air circulation. If you prefer to wear something, opt for a pair of looser underwear or boxers, if your man has some lying around.

HealthyWay
iStock

If you don’t want to go without your regular underwear throughout the night, try to make sure you’re wearing a pair that’s made from 100 percent cotton.

You pair white with white.

The initial thought process makes sense—you pick white underwear for white pants because a darker color would show through, right? Surprise! White does the exact same thing! Unless the pants you’re wearing are super thick or opaque, white underwear will definitely show through them, and it will look very, very bright and be easily seen by everyone else.

HealthyWay
iStock

The same goes for any bright or super dark colors—when you’ve got on white pants, make sure you avoid them at all costs because we can guarantee they’ll show through. It might not be something that affects your health, but it can be an embarrassing situation to deal with when it happens.

The Solution?

Instead of white, opt for underwear in a neutral, earthy type of color. Ideally, you’ll want a neutral that comes as close to your natural skin tone as possible.

HealthyWay
iStock

That way, it won’t look like there’s any difference between your underwear and your skin.

8 Dark Secrets Nobody Told You About Food At The Supermarket

When you visit the supermarket, you’re in a comfortable place.
That’s by design. Grocery stores carefully control the experience by mapping out their aisles, playing serene music, and even pumping in scented air. The goal, plain and simple, is to keep you shopping.

HealthyWay
iStock

We can’t blame them—every company has its secrets—but some of them are pretty surprising. Read on to learn more about bananas engineered to be a specific shade of yellow, “meat glue,” and all the other wily ways supermarkets and food manufacturers bend reality.

1. When it comes to shopping carts, bigger is better (for supermarkets).

Have you ever realized that you always fill up your shopping cart? Well, supermarkets have taken note.
The Consumerist reports that shopping cart sizes have grown dramatically over the past few decades, and for good reason: When carts doubled in size, consumers purchased 40 percent more, according to marketing consultant Martin Lindstrom.

HealthyWay
iStock

“No problem,” you’re saying to yourself, “I’ll just grab a basket instead of a cart.”
Not so fast. Some researchers hypothesize that you’ll be more impulsive if you use a basket. Why? They suggest that since you’ll be flexing your arm muscles, you’ll feel healthier and you’ll be more likely to buy unhealthy items as a result. (In other words, humans are really innovative at justifying their own pleasure-seeking behaviors.)
HealthyWay
iStock

However, Luk Warlop, professor of the Department of Marketing at BI Norwegian Business School, isn’t convinced.
“Compare a shopping cart with a much smaller shopping basket,” Warlop tells HealthyWay. “Suppose you go into the store for only a few things that would fit in the basket (but it would be quite full). If the basket is filling up while you tour the store, you might use it as a signal that you have bought enough. That signal is absent (or comes after many more purchases) when you use the shopping cart.”
Photo by Oleg Magni from Pexels

So, can a cart make someone spend more, or are baskets the true threat?
“Both might be true for different subgroups of customers,” Warlop says.

2. They might change expiration dates.

What’s more…it’s not really a big deal, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). To all of the expiration date–obsessed shoppers out there: Don’t be lulled into a false state of comfort by the label, friends.

HealthyWay
iStock

The powers that be are powerless to stop stores from selling food past its “best by” date, and some supermarkets simply change the listed dates. (Before you start chucking all your recent buys, you should know that, in many cases, that’s completely safe, since those original “best by” dates weren’t so accurate to begin with. Kind of makes you wonder who’s steering that ship, though.)
As the FDA writes on its website: “With the exception of infant formula, the laws that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) administers do not preclude the sale of food that is past the expiration date indicated on the label. FDA does not require food firms to place ‘expired by’, ‘use by’ or ‘best before’ dates on food products. This information is entirely at the discretion of the manufacturer.”
HealthyWay
iStock

However, the store does need to remove a food item if it’s potentially dangerous, so spoiled products shouldn’t make their way in your cart. If they do, you can always get a refund. Alternatively, you can simply avoid many of these products by checking for overlapping labels. And, of course, always rely on your senses: if something smells or tastes foul, don’t risk it.

3. The butchers might glue meat together.

Many supermarkets use a substance called transglutaminase to bind pieces of meat together, essentially creating large steaks with smaller chunks of beef. The substance is sometimes called “meat glue,” which, in addition to being a great band name, is a fairly unappetizing combination of words.
Naturally, some consumers were outraged to learn that their $5 sirloins were Frankenmeats, but in many parts of the country, supermarkets aren’t legally obligated to label their glued meat products.

HealthyWay
iStock

Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to identify glued meat, as it looks just like normal meat with marbling. You might not even taste the difference. In fact, you might have had eaten pounds of the stuff, and until labeling laws change, you can expect to eat quite a bit more.
As unsettling as the notion of cobbled-together ribeye sounds, food and agriculture correspondent for Mother Jones, Tom Philpott, pointed out that perhaps there are meat industry happenings more concerning than an enzyme that’s naturally found in blood being used to bind proteins together. Like, for example, livestock being fed…themselves?
“Every year, dairy and beef cows are fed around 2 billion pounds of chicken litter—chicken [poop] dead chickens, and leftover feeds, which contains cow protein,” Philpott wrote. “Cows being fed chicken [poop] is deeply gross; cows eating cow protein is downright scary.”
We have to agree.

4. Even the yellow of your banana was engineered to pull you in.

As National Geographic noted, supermarkets pay big money to study the psychology of shoppers. High-end supermarkets know how to carefully frame their fruits and vegetables in the perfect amount of light to attract interest; they understand that when customers walk through the produce section first, they’re more likely to make impulse purchases later.

HealthyWay
iStock

That’s why every supermarket guides you through the fresh produce before dropping you off at the cookie aisle.
Essentially, supermarkets are planned to persuade you to make those impulse purchases. A classic example is the banana.
At some point, marketing analyses revealed that customers preferred bananas of the 12-0752 shade (the numerals correspond to the Pantone color scale) over the brighter 13-0858. Banana farmers responded quickly, growing their crops under conditions that would produce the 12-0752.
HealthyWay
iStock

There was no taste difference, of course, but soon every supermarket was overflowing with the 12-0752.

5. The entire layout of a grocery store is designed to make you spend more money

Even if you know what you need before you go to the store, and even if you only go down one aisle, you are still going to walk past a plethora of tempting items that you can’t help but add to your basket.
As our video below details, grocery stores tailor their layouts specifically to ensure you buy more than you intended—and it works.

6. Once you make it to the cookie aisle, all bets are off.

So, let’s say that supermarket psychologists succeed in delivering you to the Isle of Delicious Temptations—because, honestly, once you find yourself there, isn’t it kind of like everything else disappears except you and those temptations?—you’re on your own, my guy, like Jesus in the desert.
The flesh is weak. Food manufacturers know this, and that’s why they’ve invested so much in creating the sultriest foods imaginable: We’re talking scientifically-engineered-to-get-you-hooked combos of luscious fat, salt, and sugar.
The ideal levels of certain essential tasty features in a product maximize consumer cravings, and this is known in the food industry as the “bliss point.” These hyper-palatable items keep us coming back for more.
“Regardless of the terminology we use to describe the effects of these stimuli on our brains, the point is that food—and especially food that is layered and loaded with sugar, fat, and salt—holds great sway over us,” wrote Dr. David A. Kessler in his book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. “This is simply how we are wired to respond.”

7. About that water that sprays on the “fresh” produce…

Well, in some cases. Some greens do require frequent misting. However, many fruits and vegetables don’t require additional hydration when they get to the store. So…why waste the water?

HealthyWay
iStock

Well, the water gives the produce a nice shine. The misting also helps to build the case that the food is fresh, even when it’s not. Many produce items are stored in climate-controlled rooms, where the oxygen is sucked out to stop the spoiling process, produce industry blogger Lori Taylor told HuffPost. Some fruits are six months old by the time they hit the shelves (they taste fine, though).
HealthyWay
iStock

Back to the mist: That’s just normal water, not special disinfectant water. By the time you choose your fruits and vegetables, a bunch of other people have walked by the same display—and some of them probably picked up your apples and oranges before deciding on a different purchase. That means that produce is pretty filthy, so you should always wash it before eating.

8. Fish are often mislabeled.

You can’t sell chicken and call it pork, but you can certainly sell certain types of seafood as other types of seafood.

HealthyWay
iStock

Oceana, an ocean conservation advocacy group, released a report with an analysis of 25,000 seafood samples purchased from various locations worldwide. The report showed an average “seafood fraud” rate of 30 percent. More disturbingly, 58 percent of those fraudulent samples were from fish species that could potentially cause health risks for people with certain allergies.
HealthyWay
iStock

The advocacy group is hoping to prompt the United States government to exercise tighter control over seafood sales, because right now it’s something of a free for all. In the European Union, strong regulations have dramatically reduced fish fraud over the past several years.
“Some grocers provide traceable fish, and if people ask, hopefully managers will learn people want to know where their seafood comes from,” said Kimberly Warner, report author and senior scientist at Oceana.

9. Supermarkets can fail inspections without getting shut down—and that’s gross.

Like restaurants, grocers face regular health inspections. They can lose points for operating unclean stores, especially if inspectors find mice, insects, or other pests contaminating the stock. You might reasonably assume that a failed inspection means a total shutdown for the offending grocer.

HealthyWay
iStock

Here’s what happens if a supermarket fails an inspection: pretty much nothing. Fox 29 found one grocery store in Florida that had failed three separate inspections but remained open. CBS 42 in Atlanta found a butcher that failed its inspection but remained open (the store was eventually re-tested and received a passing grade).
Why? Well, inspectors are more concerned with restaurants, and in many jurisdictions, they simply don’t have the power to shut down massive grocery stores. You can typically find the inspection reports for your local supermarket, but depending on where you live, this might be a difficult process.
HealthyWay
iStock

So choose your supermarket wisely. And, once you’re inside, remember that there is a way to beat the system: Make a list. A 2015 study found that people who make shopping lists are much more likely to make healthy choices, because they’re thinking through their purchases at home—without the temptation of supermarket staging, end caps, flexed arm muscles, and all of that other stuff.

Restaurant Workers Reveal Their Personal Food Hacks And Tips

So you’re not a celebrity chef on Chopped, entertaining the world with your culinary masterpieces. Just because you didn’t go to cooking school doesn’t mean that you can’t delight your eager audience at home with your kitchen prowess, though.

HealthyWay
iStock

Professionals in the food industry agree that years of working in the industry have taught them the easy tricks for making meals look and taste fantastic. All the everyday chef needs to cook like a pro is to discover and apply the formerly secret tips these chefs use daily.
HealthyWay
iStock

Here are the top hacks that will help transform your meals from amateur to amazing…in less time and with less effort!

Never fry bacon.

When you fry bacon, you end up getting grease splatter everywhere—and the bacon can become crumbly and unevenly cooked.

HealthyWay
iStock

The best way to cook bacon is to bake it on a baking sheet at between 300 and 350 degrees. It’s foolproof and the result is a crispy product, cooked to perfection.

Sprinkle chopped garlic with salt.

This is a really helpful hack! When you’re chopping garlic, chop it really finely with your knife, then sprinkle salt on it and grind the salt into it with the flat side of the knife.

HealthyWay
iStock

It seasons the garlic and brings out the flavor, while at the same time helping you chop it more easily.
Speaking of garlic, here’s how to peel it. (Eggs and onions too!)

Make epic mashed potatoes.

Everyone loves mashed potatoes! But making them can be really tedious. Try this hack the next time your family screams for them. Bake the whole potatoes on a bed of salt on a baking sheet. When you can easily poke holes in them, peel them. Save the skins.

HealthyWay
iStock

Fry the skins in some butter for about two minutes and then add ½ cup of milk to the frying pan. Strain the milk through a strainer and add it to your cooked potatoes with some salt and pepper. Mash or whip the potatoes to your desired consistency.

Buy a good knife.

You don’t need that electric juicer or all-in-one breakfast station to be a good cook. However, it is important to make sure you have the best of the basics. In the video below, learn about the most essential tool to have with you in the kitchen.

Additionally, you must learn how to properly cut and chop with your knife. Check out these videos on how to slice and dice your favorite fruits and vegetables. In no time, you’ll be prepping like a pro!

What about kiwis, mangos, and other tricky fruits?

Get good tongs.

Next in line, and equally as important, is having a good pair of sturdy tongs. Most experts love the ones with the silicone tips because they can be used on any surface without scratching and are heat resistant up to 600 degrees.

HealthyWay
iStock

Tongs are the most versatile tool in the kitchen and can be used for many things, including squeezing juice out of lemons, toasting a tortilla over a flame, rotating your dishes in the oven, tossing salads and pasta, grilling, and rotating delicate food.

Cream the heck out of your butter.

For the best-tasting baked goods, the one rule of thumb is to cream the butter and sugar together for longer than you would ever think (4 to 5 minutes is the standard guideline).

HealthyWay
iStock

Well-creamed butter ensures that the ingredient will be evenly distributed throughout the batter, making your baked goods moist and yummy.

The video below demonstrates how to correctly peel an orange.

Citrus sections never looked so sweet.

Bacon makes everything better.

Have you got something bland that needs a little oomph? Add bacon (and don’t forget to bake it)!

HealthyWay
iStock

This ingredient is used by chefs the world over to add flavor, salt, and texture to plain potatoes, boring rice, and everyday veggies.

Save bacon fat for everything.

Speaking of bacon, the secret to making anything fried taste even better is to fry it in bacon fat (aka bacon grease) instead of olive or vegetable oil.

HealthyWay
iStock

It improves the flavor and richness of everyday foods so much that chefs often refer to it as liquid gold. Simply keep the drippings from cooked bacon and fry everything and anything in it!

Make the best stir fry ever.

Ever wonder why the fried rice at the Chinese restaurant tastes so good?

HealthyWay
iStock

The answer is chicken stock! Boil your rice in chicken stock instead of water and watch your guests’ mouths water!
Another key to tasty stir fry lies in the temperature of the wok. Amateur chefs make the mistake of cooking the ingredients on too low of heat in fear that they’ll burn them. A wok must be cranked up to high heat (until it sizzles), and rocked back and forth to cook effectively.
The result is a delicious stir fry that’s crispy where it counts without being charred.

Recycle leftovers for stock.

Homemade stock is simply scrumptious and makes a huge difference in the taste of dishes. Professional chefs make their own stock by collecting the unused parts of vegetables, such as carrot tops, onion stems, and celery ends. Leftover chicken bones and extra meat can also be saved for your broth.

HealthyWay
iStock

Just put all of these scraps in a Ziploc bag and store it in the freezer until you’re ready to make your stock!

Slice cake with a hot knife.

Ever notice how beautiful a perfectly cut piece of cake is? Have you ever attempted to cut a piece of cake perfectly?

HealthyWay
iStock

It’s nearly impossible if the knife isn’t hot! Run the knife under hot water for about a minute, wipe it dry, and watch it slide effortlessly through the cake.

Make the best chicken ever.

Everyone loves chicken! But not everyone can make it delicious. Chefs agree that there are two hacks to cooking the best-tasting chicken your family has ever had.
1. Season both the outside and the inside of the chicken.

HealthyWay
iStock

2. Don’t overcook the meat! The way to tell if chicken meat is cooked to perfection is to slice a piece and make sure the liquid runs clear.

Form cookie dough into balls and freeze them.

Everyone loves homemade cookies. They taste so much better than store bought ones. But who has time to whip up a batch on the spur of the moment? Do what the pros do and make extra batter when you’ve got extra time!

HealthyWay
iStock

Form the dough into balls and freeze them on a cookie sheet. After they’re frozen, remove them from the sheet, place them in a Ziploc bag, and pop that back in the freezer. Preheat the oven, pull out the bag, and you can have delicious, hot cookies in 10 minutes or less anytime you want.

Microwave your baked potatoes for fast meals.

Do you love the taste of a good baked potato but don’t have the hour it takes to cook it? Cheat the clock! Set your microwave to the baked potato setting and cook it until it’s semi-soft.

HealthyWay
iStock

Crisp it up by placing your potato in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.

Here’s the proper way to dice an onion.

First, trim the ends off the onion using a sharp knife. Then cut the onion in half lengthwise and peel off the skin. Working with one side of the onion, slice crosswise. Flip onion sideways and cut downward, finishing with a quick chop. Voila!

The Baby Products You Don't Need To Waste Money On (And The Ones To Buy Instead)

Parenting can be really tough sometimes. The pacing, the lack of sleep, and the seemingly endless loads of laundry that pile up. Add to that the stress of the cost of raising a kid in the 21st century.
HealthyWay
According to a report of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average middle-income family will spend more than $12,500 per year on child-related expenses. Many of these expenses come from buying products that are supposed to make parenting easier—or your baby happier. Sometimes they’re great; other times they’re not. As a parent, it’s so frustrating to spend money on something (and get excited about what it offers) only to find that it doesn’t live up to its claim.

HealthyWay
iStock

Let us help you save time and money! If you’re in the middle of “baby central,” or if you’re preparing for it, here is a list of must-have products (according to other parents) that will put your hard-earned money to good use—as well as a few hyped-up “solutions” that you can, and should, skip.

Don’t Buy: Pacifier Sanitizing Wipes

We understand why these make sense for a first-time parent. First-time parents tend to religiously scrub the first-born’s pacifier every time it hits the floor (which is often). By the time kid No. 2 or 3 arrives—or maybe just after two or three months—parents usually start to relax. A little floor dust never hurt anyone, after all.

HealthyWay
Pinterest

We know terrific moms who actually lick their kids’ pacifiers clean. Others give them a once-over with their sleeves. Unless your pediatrician specifically tells you to use sanitizing wipes, you can probably get by without them.

Do Buy: The NoseFrida “Snot Sucker”

This is, on the other hand, an absolute must to have on hand. Since you can’t protect your little one from every single germ, it’s only natural they’ll pick up a bug and feel a little gross for a few days. One bad baby cold and you’ll realize the reason why this product is a necessity.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This brilliant invention provides a gentle suction to clear your baby’s nasal passages, painlessly and effectively, so they can breathe—and you can breathe easy. Yes, it might seem a little gross, but it’s hardly the ickiest part of parenting.
Pick one up here for $20.

Don’t Buy: Floor Seats

Most infants can’t sit up on their own until they’re a few months old. That is fine. They’ve got their whole lives to sit up and stare at screens. Why rush into it?

HealthyWay
Target

Floor seats prop up babies who can’t actually sit yet, as if they needed that. There’s even a safety belt so your kid can’t escape. Save your money and let your baby’s musculoskeletal system do the work. (Though if the ease is still attractive to you, consider that these seats were recalled a few years ago because of the risk of injury they posed to children when not used “properly.” Why risk it?)

Do Buy: Boppy Pillow

This product is extremely useful, and its function changes as your baby grows older. Moms use it during the infant stage to elevate their baby during breastfeeding. It can also act as a support for a little one to lie on.

HealthyWay
Boppy

Once baby is past 6 months of age, the pillow can prop them up to ensure proper seating (and that the baby doesn’t fall over).
Get the original here for $40.

Don’t Buy: Wipe Warmers

Didn’t Freud say something about adult depression being caused by contact with freezing cold baby wipes during infancy? No, he didn’t, because the idea is absurd.
HealthyWay
Unless you store your baby wipes in the refrigerator, there’s no good reason to heat them up before using them for their disgusting and necessary purpose. If you do store baby wipes in the fridge, though, let us know; we’ve got an idea for a $450 baby wipe cooler we’d love to discuss with you.

Do Buy: Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

If you’ve never taken care of a baby who’s having a bad case of diaper rash, you’re lucky, because it’s just awful—and something that you’ll do anything to avoid ever happening again.

HealthyWay
Hobo Mama

This cream has zinc oxide to protect your precious little one’s rear end from diaper rash, which can be incredibly, blisteringly painful. It can also soothe the skin when babies have allergic reactions to wipes or diapers.
Get a 16-ounce tub here for $16.

Don’t Buy: Baby Food Makers

We come from a proud tradition of collecting kitchen gadgets that we’ll never use. With dedicated puree machines, you can get your young one started on this tradition early.

HealthyWay
Wholesome Baby Food

Baby food makers are basically just blenders with a little fancy packaging. If there’s a blender in your kitchen, you’re already there. A baby food cookbook is probably more worth your while, and will definitely cost a lot less. On the other hand, you can just go the super-easy route with baby-led weaning, where you just give them small bits of the food you’re already cooking for your own meals (provided they’re age-appropriate, of course).

Do Buy: Munchkin Fresh Food Feeder AND/OR The Spuni

Babies can’t eat certain foods because the size or shape of the item might make them choke. Even certain purees have lumps that can get caught in an infant’s throat.

HealthyWay
Munchkin

Not only does this product allow your baby to eat foods that normally wouldn’t be safe, but it also provides hours of entertainment as your baby sucks and plays with their food. (P.S. the clean up is worth it!)
Get two of them here for $7.
Spuni has a unique design that promotes the natural latching instinct that a baby develops during breast and bottle feeding.
HealthyWay
Spuni is the perfect tool to help your baby transition to solid food.
Get one here for $11.57.

Don’t Buy: Thermometers Made for the Bath

While we’re on the subject of bathing, you might see some cute thermometers that are designed to warn you when the bath water is too hot. You actually already own a product that can do this. It is your elbow.

HealthyWay
A Mum Reviews

Stick your elbow in the water. It should feel just slightly warm, but not hot. Too cold? Don’t put the baby in. Too hot? Don’t put the baby in. That should do the trick.

Do Buy: Puj Tub

The sink always seems to be the most comfortable and convenient place to bathe a newborn. The problem is that most baby tubs are huge, bulky, impossible to store between baths, and might not even fit in your sink anyway. The Puj Tub makes washing your baby in the sink (any sink!) a lot easier, and it won’t fill up your entire closet when bath-time is done.

HealthyWay
Puj

Unfold it and hang it flat for easy drying. You’ll never struggle to find a place to store a tub again.
Get one here for $45.

Don’t Buy: Walking Helpers

Unless your doctor specifically orders you to use one of these portable harnesses, there’s no real reason to invest in one. They’re supposed to help your kid learn to walk, but learning to walk is a natural process that doesn’t really need fancy new devices to take effect.

HealthyWay
Baby-Find

On the other hand, if you’re going to keep your kid (literally) on a leash until they’re like 12, this product provides some nice training.

Do Buy: Baby K’tan Baby Carrier

This wrap-style carrier is a big hit among parents of newborns, babies, and toddlers up to 35 pounds. It offers the comfort and flexibility that parents love in wrap carriers but avoids the messy, complicated “over” wrapping.

HealthyWay
Elephant Road

It’s also super portable and easy to throw in a diaper bag or backpack.
Get the original here for $50. (Multiple sizes and colors are available, but prices may vary.)

Don’t Buy: Super-Fancy Bedding Sets for a Crib

There’s a whole cottage industry based on the human need to make nurseries as cute as possible. You know what’s really cute, though? Your baby. You can spend thousands on a chic, perfectly matched bedding set. Or you could spend a few bucks at the thrift store. Either way, your baby won’t know the difference.

HealthyWay
Rosenberry Rooms

We’re not saying you shouldn’t pay out the wazoo for the comfiest, softest infant sheets known to man. We’re just saying that you shouldn’t think it will make a difference to your baby—that stuff is for you, Mom.
Another reason you shouldn’t drop a bunch of money on all this stuff? Your baby can’t sleep with it anyway. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep on their backs on a tight-fitting sheet in a crib that is free of blankets, crib bumpers, pillows, toys, or stuffed animals. Why even bother buying something you can’t use?

Do Buy: Summer Infant SwaddleMe Original Swaddle

Most babies love to be swaddled! But we challenge you to find an overwhelmed new parent who can do it effectively and without frustration.

HealthyWay
diapers.com

That’s what makes this product so awesome. Its comfy fabric and foolproof swaddling mechanism will make even the most sleep-deprived caretaker a pro.
Get a three-pack here for $24. (Other patterns are available, but prices may vary.)
Now that you know what you should and should not need, head over to the Amazon Baby Registry where you’ll find all these essentials and more.

30 Outfit Mistakes That Will Make You Look Messy

When you absolutely need to look your best, you have to pay attention to the little things.
It’s always the little things—not dramatic changes—that really make all the difference. No matter your body type, profession, personal taste, or preference, it is possible to look and feel good without having to change your entire style, much less who you are at your core.
HealthyWay
With that said, certain types of faux pas can be especially damaging. Avoid becoming a victim to these sneaky saboteurs by following these tips.

1. Leaving Bits of Lint and Animal Fur on Your Clothes

People notice details, and a single piece of lint can stand out, especially if it doesn’t match your clothing.

HealthyWay
iStock

Rather than color-coordinating your lint, we’d recommend getting rid of it entirely. Lint rollers are amazing, but if you don’t have one handy, some tape will do just fine.
If you’ve got animals, you should have several lint rollers and put them where you can find them easily. Keep one in your car, one in your bag, and one in the bathroom.
There’s nothing worse than running late for a job interview only to realize that your shirt looks like you rolled around on the carpet.

2. See-through Fabrics

To be clear: thin, gauzy skirts can be a great addition to your wardrobe. Do yourself a favor, though, and make sure that they don’t go totally transparent when you end up backlit.
Some fabrics will do their best to trick you. They look totally opaque in the dim light of morning. By the time you’re headed out for lunch, though, the light shines right through them, treating all of your coworkers to a glimpse of what’s underneath.
If you’re totally in love with a thin skirt, be sure to wear leggings underneath. You want to preserve a little mystery.

3. Wearing Clothes With Tiny Rips, Frays, and Other Minor Damage

These types of issues sneak up on you. You’ll wear the same jeans every day, and you won’t notice as they start to fray. Or you’ll ignore the missing button on your favorite shirt simply because you’ve worn it so many times.

HealthyWay
iStock

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and that includes clothes. Small rips, holes, frays, and tears can go from a minor flaw to a deal breaker when it comes to clothing.
A tailor may be able to help you with hems and holes. Cute patches can conceal minor tears and rips. Consider donating any clothes that are still wearable. Although it may be hard to let go, just think of the new items you can replace these with.

4. Not Breaking out the Iron

We get it. You’re busy. It’s difficult to fit in that ironing time when you’ve got so much going on. But your wardrobe, and possibly even your image, won’t be taken seriously if you look like you just grabbed your shirt from the bottom of the hamper.
HealthyWay
Preventing wrinkles can save you precious time with a little bit of effort. Read the care tag on your clothing to learn how to wash it best: The water and dryer temperatures you use could have a huge effect on the condition of your clothing. Also, hang your clothes up immediately after they are dry.
If you’re against ironing, you can use the dryer to your advantage in the fight against wrinkles. Wrap the garment around an ice cube, then throw them in the dryer. The ice dissolves and turns into steam, thereby creating the perfect anti-wrinkle environment.
HealthyWay
But sometimes, wrinkles are inevitable. Got a big trip coming up and don’t feel like packing your iron? Learn a wrinkle-free packing method instead.

5. Rolling up Your Sleeves Incorrectly

When the seasons change, you might find yourself rolling up your sleeves to stay cool. It’s actually quite a fashionable look, provided that you take the time to do a double-roll.

HealthyWay
iStock

That technique uses two simple folds, leaving your cuffs looking clean and precise. The “classic” method leaves you looking like you’re not concerned with your appearance, and it’s sloppy, to say the least.

6. Too Many Accessories

Accessories are essential to your look. A single necklace can make a great statement piece, for instance, or a scarf can pull your entire outfit together. The ideal accessory will be eye catching and (this is important) appropriate for the occasion.

HealthyWay
Alex Zivatar

Where you’ll get into trouble is if you start piling on the gaudy accessories to cover up a simple outfit.
Don’t worry about being too plain; that’s a much better option than going overboard and risking looking tacky.

7. Worn-out Clothing

Looking to make a bad impression? An easy way to do this is by wearing a shirt that was white in a former life. It’s inevitable that the whitest of whites start to discolor, and once they do, it’s time to either put them in the discard pile or do something about them.
Prevent your whites from becoming former versions of themselves by making whites a separate load. Mixing them with colors can cause them to become dingy and gray.

8. Wearing Hair Ties as Bracelets

You’re not a teenager anymore (well, actually, we don’t know—you might be, in which case, disregard that sentence). While you’ve been wearing hair ties on your wrists for years, it’s never really been okay.

HealthyWay
iStock

Hair tie bracelets look tacky, and they’re simply not necessary. Keep a few hair ties in your car, your bag, and anywhere else you might need them.

9. Pants That Are Too Long

There are many things in life that would classify as being a drag, but your pants shouldn’t be one of them. Hem lines that flirt with the floor are just fine, but you’ve gone too far when they make contact. Along with carrying around dirt and other grime, long pants can become damaged from their trip..

HealthyWay
Improvemant.com/YouTube

Prevent this fashion faux pas by visiting the tailor. Bring the shoes you like to wear with them the most along so the tailor has an idea of how much to remove.

10. Wearing Athletic Shoes in Non-athletic Situations

Sure, your tennis shoes are comfortable, but unless you’re on a tennis court, they look out of place. Athletic shoes stick out like a sore thumb and can make you look like a teenager (and not in a good way).

HealthyWay
iStock

Guys make this mistake more often than women, in our experience, but we’ve all done it on occasion.

11. While We’re at It: Not Cleaning Your Shoes

You wouldn’t leave the house in mud-covered clothing, so why would you walk outside with dirty shoes? A pair of less-than-clean kicks can ruin your outfit faster than you can click your heels together.
A quick swipe when you walk through the door can prevent buildup on heels and boots, but your sneakers are often a different story. Their material can make stains difficult to erase. Fortunately, you can usually rid shoes of unsightly marks by tossing them in the washer.

HealthyWay
Alex Zivatar

According to USAToday.com, you’ll need to sprinkle the insides of each sneaker with 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and leave them overnight. Shake the soda out in the morning.
Remove the laces from your sneakers and place them in a pillowcase to stop them from getting tangled in the wash. Wipe as much dirt and debris from your shoes as you can with a scrubbing brush, then toss the laces and the shoes in the washer. Protect your shoes, and your washer, by throwing four to six towels in, as well. This will keep your shoes protected and stop them from banging against the washer.
Use liquid detergent and wash the shoes in a cold, delicate cycle. Allow the shoes to air-dry once they are clean. Avoid putting them in the dryer, as its heat can damage your sneakers.

12. Wearing Clothes That Don’t Fit Correctly

Nothing can kill your style quite as quickly as an oversized shirt or too-tight pants. Even if the clothes feel comfortable, if they don’t fit, don’t wear them.
However, falling in love with a piece of clothing that doesn’t exactly fit is a common tragedy. You can likely fix it, however, by taking the garment to a tailor.

HealthyWay
iStock

Do remember that different clothing manufacturers size their garments quite differently. If you’re a size 2 at one store, you might be a size 6 somewhere else, so trust the fit, not the tag. Always take the time to try on clothes before you buy them.

13. That Applies to the Shoes, Too

Shoes that are too large or too tight create an interesting effect, and not in a good way. Oversized shoes make you look like you’ve got a bit role in the upcoming IT remake, whereas small shoes can make your feet look like they’re planning a prison break.

HealthyWay
iStock

Again, try shoes on before you buy them, and if you’re not sure if you’re wearing the right size, get a second opinion before you head somewhere important.

14. Wearing White Clothing That Isn’t White Anymore

Alas, even the whitest whites will eventually start to turn a pale yellow color. The good news is that you can usually restore your whites with a simple bleach bath, and if you’ve got an aversion to bleach, baking soda or hydrogen peroxide can work wonders.

HealthyWay
iStock

Whatever you use to whiten your clothes, use it consistently. A t-shirt with a vaguely straw-colored hue doesn’t have the same look as a crisp white top.

15. Not Taking Care of Your Nails

A manicure can turn nails from cute to cringe-worthy in a matter of minutes and all it takes is a single chip in the polish. Although keeping a perfect manicure for more than a week or two is just about impossible, you can increase its lifespan by following these simple steps.
First, apply an even and thin base coat. Allow the layer to completely dry, which usually takes at least two minutes, before you put on another coat. Use a gel-finish top coat or an at-home LED lamp to help your nails dry.
If you want a professional manicure, ask them to skip the top coat and apply the gel finishing coat when you get home.

16. Carrying a Massive Bag

Sure, it’s great to have a bag that can carry your laptop, makeup kit, car keys, and body cream while still leaving enough room for a full-grown chihuahua, but a big bag can easily throw off the rest of your outfit. After all, a bag is an accessory.
HealthyWay
Opt for a smaller bag for job interviews and other important events (if you carry a bag at all—a briefcase might be more appropriate). And make sure that your bag’s in good condition. As with other elements of your look, you’ll need to call in a ringer when your bag falls into disrepair.

17. Missing a Belt Loop (and Other Minor Mistakes)

Pay attention to the little things. You can have a perfectly put together outfit, only to sabotage yourself by missing a belt loop or leaving a visible zipper.
HealthyWay
We’re not saying that every inch of your outfit has to be absolutely perfect, but do a quick ocular pat down of yourself before you leave the house; if you don’t have a decent-sized mirror, now’s the time to get one. Make sure that you’re not making any obvious mistakes.

18. Making Too Many Adjustments to Your Outfit

On the other hand, once you leave the house, try to stop worrying. Don’t constantly pick at your clothes or mess with your sleeves; guys, leave the tie alone. Fidgeting with your clothing is a sure way to look messy, even if there’s nothing actually wrong with your look.
HealthyWay
If you really can’t stop fidgeting, recognize that you’re a little stressed out. Take a moment to collect yourself, squeeze a tennis ball, or do whatever else you have to do to stop picking your outfit apart.

19. Clothes That Are Pilling

It happens to the best of ‘em. A few times into wearing, you notice that certain spots on your garment are a little rougher than others. The next thing you know, a bunch of tiny little balls join the party and take up space on those rough patches, which are most likely in the armpit or thigh areas. These clothing-crashers are called pills and are formed when fabric rubs together.
Blended fabrics are usually the most susceptible to becoming pilling victims, says Good Housekeeping magazine. Fiber blends that contain three or more fabrics have a higher incidence of pilling, especially those that contain both natural and synthetic fibers.

HealthyWay
iStock

To prevent damage, turn your garment inside out before washing. Doing so prevents the fabric from rubbing against other clothes in the wash, stopping the pills before they wreak havoc.
The gold standard for pill-prone garments is hand-washing. Placing your washer on the gentle or delicate setting is second best. Air-drying your clothing can also help to keep it safe. Once everything is washed and dried, store or hang your garments inside out.

20. Not Getting Your Favorite Pair of Shoes Repaired

We get it; you love your shoes, even if the soles are fading away and the leather is scuffed. The good news is that a talented cobbler can perform those much-needed repairs, restoring your favorite kicks to their former glory.
HealthyWay
The bad news is that the longer you wait, the more you’ll pay—and the worse you’ll look. If you’re going to keep that old pair of shoes, take care of them.

21. For Guys: Unkempt Facial Hair

The beard is back, folks. Facial hair hasn’t been this fashionable since the Old West. With a great beard comes great responsibility, though, and too many of us are forgetting that beard maintenance takes work. A neat, masculine face-mane is one thing. Grizzly Adams is another.

HealthyWay
Splash News Online

To keep from looking sloppy, make sure that you keep your beard neat and trimmed. That means shaving your neck, and probably your cheeks as well. There should be clear lines demarcating “beard” and “non-beard.” Otherwise, you’re not just Brooklyn hip. You’re mountain-man messy.

22. For Women: Visible Bra Straps

There’s a war going down in our culture today, and internet comments threads are the battlefields. That war is over the appropriateness of visible bra straps.
“Adult women wear bras, and people should deal with it,” say the pro-bra-strap ladies who just don’t care.

HealthyWay
Pinterest

“Bra straps are never, ever appropriate in a professional setting,” say the human resource managers.
Given the controversy, it’s safest to keep your straps covered up. You might not look like you’re making a point; you might just look like you got dressed in the dark. This is not to take a side in the debate. We’re just saying that the smart money is always on covering undergarments. The same goes for your high-waisted thong, by the way. These clips work great, or go with a strapless bra.

23. Wearing Oversized Clothes to Hide Your Figure

Oversized clothing is “in” right now, but don’t play into the trend just to hide your figure when you’re feeling bloated or self conscious. Tuck in those oversized tops or add a belt; make sure that your figure’s visible.

HealthyWay
iStock

You rock, and there’s no reason to sink into your clothing. If you want to go a few sizes up, have a plan and make an effort to balance your outfit’s proportions.

24. Excessively Long Sleeves

Long sleeves can easily make you look like a little kid. Unfortunately, your favorite shirt might flatter the rest of your figure perfectly; if you’ve got short arms, we feel your pain.

HealthyWay
A Love Is Blind

If you don’t want to roll up, go ahead and give your tailor a call—and if you don’t have a tailor, get one. For a few bucks, you can get a perfectly crafted look, provided that you’re on a tailor’s good side, and you’ll never go back to straight off-the-rack clothes again. That applies for both men and women (and guys, having a tailor will instantly put you way ahead of your competition).

25. Going Really Retro (Without Any Sort of Twist)

We’re fine with retro looks, to be absolutely clear. You just need to have some sort of a modern update, or you’ll end up looking like you got stranded in a 1980s (or earlier!) department store.

HealthyWay
iStock

Modern accessories can provide a great, easy update. Your shoes and bottoms can also be modernized to complement a vintage top. Just take it easy on the nostalgic items, and you’ll be fine; otherwise, you’ll look like you didn’t spend enough time thinking this through.

26. Taking the Term “Boyfriend Blazer” Too Literally

There are some great boyfriend blazers in the boutiques these days, but you can’t literally lift a boyfriend’s jacket and expect to look chic. What the designers call a “boyfriend blazer” is actually cut to strike a very feminine figure. Blazers designed for men, meanwhile, will make you look like David Byrne during his big-suit era.

HealthyWay
iStock

No matter how romantic you think it is to snuggle in your boyfriend’s clothes, doing so likely gives you a sloppy appearance. If you like the idea of donning garments that have that boyfriend-type style, look for boyfriend-cut clothes. Despite the name, this type of clothing is cut for feminine figures, and looks amazing.

27. Showing up With Wet Hair

Nothing says “I overslept” like going out with wet hair. You get a pass if it’s raining, but otherwise, put that blow dryer to work. You want your look to be complete before you show up at an important work function or, God forbid, a hot date.
HealthyWay
Wet hair sends the message that you were rushing to get out of the house, which suggests general sloppiness. We get it, though—you totally were rushing out of the house.

28. Leggings as Pants

This fashion faux pas has taken the nation by storm. We blame the rise of the yoga pant.

HealthyWay

Leggings can be a key ingredient in a super cute outfit, but don’t mistake them for fully formed bottoms in themselves. Throw on a short skirt or wear a dress if your shirt is belly-grazing; the key is to keep your backside from hitting people in the face. That’s just sloppy (even if it’s incredibly comfortable).

29. Day-old Eye Makeup

It can be tempting to leave yesterday’s mascara and eyeliner on rather than going through the arduous process of removing and re-applying. Don’t give into temptation; people can totally tell, and you’re really not saving that much time in the long run.

HealthyWay
Gorunway

On day two, mascara gets clumpy. Old eyeliner fades unevenly, leaving you looking like a Picasso painting. There’s only one way to keep your eye-makeup game going strong, and that’s to clean and re-apply daily. Sorry to break the bad news.

30. Smudges on Your Glasses

A cute pair of frames is great, but you’ll spoil the effect if you let lenses get smudged and greasy.

Keep a microfiber cloth handy at all times, and be sure to rub down your glasses before an important encounter. You definitely want to look your best if you’re getting close enough for someone to see your glasses in such detail.

Mom Gets $16 Million After Nurses Did This During Delivery

Caroline Malatesta is a mother of four who lives in Alabama.
For her fourth child, she had a very specific birth plan in place. She wanted a natural birth—a departure for Malatesta, who had epidurals and episiotomies while delivering her three other children.

Facebook / J.T. Malatesta

The mother decided she wanted to give birth in a more natural way; she wanted to forgo the medicine and avoid laying on her back. Her birth plan was unconventional by modern standards, so she chose to have the baby at Brookwood Health Center, which explicitly advertised that they would follow any birth plan.
“They were using phrases like ‘personalized birth plan,’ ‘it’s about that birthing plan…whatever you want out of your birthing plan,'” Malatesta wrote later.
“No other hospital in town so much as mentioned such progressive concepts (and it should be noted that assisted out-of-hospital births aren’t legal here in Alabama).”
The Brookwood facility offered “autonomy,” according to advertisements, and even had birthing tubs on hand to accommodate mothers’ wishes. Malatesta spoke to the doctors at the medical facility who assured her that they would do everything possible to meet her needs. It seemed like the perfect place to bring a new child into the world.

“This all came at a time when more of my friends around the country were beginning to have babies, and I was beginning to realize just how differently birth was handled elsewhere,” Malatesta wrote.
“Before then, I didn’t know there were options. I was hearing of friends being allowed to move around during labor, use the restroom, drink water, avoid stirrups, and birth in different positions. I always had been confined to the bed with a bedpan or catheter, only allowed to eat ice chips, and on my back in stirrups for delivery.”

“I always was prepped from the waist down with surgical cloths and washed with antiseptic prior to delivery. I just figured that’s how childbirth was done everywhere. Lots of these friends had natural births and talked about them positively. They didn’t have routine interventions and their recoveries seemed faster.”
She made up her mind: She’d switch hospitals and give birth in a more natural way.
HealthyWay

“I carefully made a birth plan based on best medical research, approved by my doctor,” Malatesta wrote. “I was ready!”

But when the time came to deliver the baby, Malatesta says the experience was a nightmare.

Nurses immediately put her in a hospital gown and forced her onto her back, contrary to her wishes; she’d wanted to walk around during her contractions, wearing her own clothes. When she tried to change positions, one nurse physically restrained her.

“She grabbed my left wrist and forced it out from under me,” Malatesta wrote. “I pulled back, but couldn’t escape her grip. She pulled my arm and rolled me over to my back. That is the moment I lost control over my birth.”
When Malatesta voiced her concerns or objections, she alleges that the nurses simply ignored her. She claims the nurses actually seemed annoyed that she would object to their instructions, despite the fact that she’d gone over a specific birth plan with her doctor.

Then, the situation somehow got worse; the baby began crowning, but the doctor wasn’t there. The nurses then began physically holding the baby in place, preventing Malatesta from pushing the baby out. This struggle lasted for six minutes until the doctor finally arrived.
The medical records showed Malatesta’s struggle.

“Unfortunately, the patient was not able to [behave] in a controlled manner,” the records read. “She was pretty much all over the bed.”
The baby’s head immediately came out and her son, Jack, was born a minute later. Fortunately, Jack was perfectly healthy, but Malatesta certainly doesn’t credit the medical staff in any way.

“As if birthing a baby isn’t hard enough, I gave birth while engaged in a physical struggle against the people I trusted to care for us,” she wrote.
“I kept asking, “Why? Why?” but the nurse wasn’t answering me. She ignored me, acting almost annoyed with me. As we went back and forth—me asking questions and telling her this was more painful for me, and her getting increasingly irritated—it became very clear that this wasn’t about health or safety. It was a power struggle.”

But unfortunately, Malatesta continued to suffer. She says that the ordeal left her permanently injured, suffering from a condition called pudendal neuralgia. The main symptom of this condition is permanent pain in the genitals, which she said ruined her family life.
About eight months after giving birth, she tried to work with the hospital for compensation for this painful condition.

“My obstetrician called it the worst injury he has seen in all his decades of practice,” she said. “It has turned our family life upside down. I was a stay-at-home mother of four children, ages five and under, at the time Jack was born, and what happened to me during his birth left me unable to care for them as needed. I endure debilitating pain on a near daily basis—pain much worse than labor.”
The hospital wasn’t interested in negotiating. In fact, they didn’t even provide the answers that Malatesta asked for.

“I grew up in a medical family,” she wrote in a piece published by Cosmopolitan. “My dad is a doctor; my granddad was a doctor. Litigation, medical malpractice—it’s not something we take lightly. When the nerve injury really revealed itself, I wasn’t planning to file a lawsuit. I just wanted answers.”
Soon, however, Malatesta was reconsidering that stance. She filed a lawsuit against the hospital, and two years after filing, she went to court.

Even during the lawsuit, Malatesta’s pain affected her; she wasn’t able to sit for more than a few hours a day, so she couldn’t spend much time in the courtroom.
But something incredible happened: Other women began to come forward with other stories of obstetric violence.
“I became acutely aware that this wasn’t just about me,” Malatesta wrote. “This became a cause for me, almost. To bring the truth out on behalf of so many other women. I was surprised how much it meant to these other women that I was filing a lawsuit.”

The suit, filed in 2014, took two years to litigate. A jury deliberated for nine hours, then returned a stunning verdict, awarding the Malatesta family $10 million in compensatory damages, $5 million in punitive damages for “reckless fraud,” and $1 million for loss of consortium.
HealthyWay
Tamika Moore

“Brookwood used the idea of natural birth as a way to lure in patients,” Malatesta wrote. “I say that without a doubt. They were not providing the services they advertised.”
“I think their marketing department got ahead of themselves because they knew that women wanted these services. Women want to make their own decisions. Hospitals are advertising that women can make these choices like it’s a privilege instead of a patient right. That’s insulting to women!”
HealthyWay
Tamika Moore

While the jury’s decision will go a long way towards holding the perpetrators of obstetric violence accountable, Malatesta says that she’ll likely live with horrific pain for her entire life. She hopes that her struggle will help to prevent this type of scenario from playing out the same way in the future.

14 Things Every Woman Should Stop Doing

Women are empathetic creatures. The universe made us so! Actually, it was evolution that did. Empathy is a useful and necessary trait in women because it makes for more nurturing mothers and more connected friends. Unfortunately, empathy is also linked to the feeling of guilt.
Ever notice that your guy doesn’t feel bad about things like you do? Studies show that most men are guilt deficient because they lack “interpersonal sensitivity” or empathy. Unfortunately, because of all of our empathy, we as women go to the other end of the spectrum and suffer from something called destructive guilt. This is overwhelming guilt that can be habitual and become a part of everyday life.

HealthyWay
iStock

The good news is, knowledge is power! The more we recognize how guilt affects our behavior, the more we can change it. We can take back control of our lives and live forever, blissfully (guilt free).
Here’s how:

Stop saying “yes” to everyone.

“Sure, I can meet you for dinner (even though I’m exhausted).” “No problem, I’ll edit your article for you (even though I have a ton of work to do).” “Yes, I’ll drive you to the train station (even though I’m late).”

HealthyWay
iStock

Women hate saying no in fear that they’ll hurt someone’s feelings or they won’t be liked. It’s time we start setting some boundaries and sticking to them! Say no, then let it go.

Stop apologizing for everything.

The waiter bumps into you and you say sorry. You need something filed, and you apologize about it to your assistant. You ask your best friend her advice, then follow up with an apology for not having figured it out on your own.

HealthyWay
iStock

Studies show that women apologize often because they have a low threshold for what constitutes offensive behavior, they want to be liked, and they want to soften a pushy, demanding image. Women need to own up to their decisions and desires and stop saying sorry so much.

Comparing Themselves to Other Women

You find yourself on social media comparing yourself to your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers. You obsess over every detail: how they look compared to you, what they wear, how successful they are, and even what their homemade muffins look like.

HealthyWay
iStock

As Teddy Roosevelt said, Comparison is the thief of joy.” It preys on your insecurities and only serves to make you feel bad. Be grateful and celebrate who you are and what you have. Build yourself up by becoming oblivious to those around you.

Holding on to Regrets

A wise woman once said, I never regret nor do I look back on decisions I had to make; regret just seems so unuseful to me. We can’t agree more! Own up to your decisions and mistakes, then move on.

HealthyWay
iStock

Life’s too short to obsess over the past.

Feeling Unworthy at Work

When you get complimented for a job well done at work do you often respond with, Thanks, but someone else could’ve done even better.” Or Thanks, but it was no biggie.” Do you often feel that you’re undeserving of your job and maybe even that someone might find out that you’re a fake?

HealthyWay
iStock

According to Psychology Today, over 70 percent of people report having felt like an impostor in their careers. You’re not alone! But you probably should not be feeling this way. You are where you are in your career for a reason!
HealthyWay
iStock

“You can only be your best, no more no less.” So own your success and sprint on!

Worrying About Having a Clean House

No one cares about the dust under the bed, the dishes left in the sink, the bills on the dining table, or the disorganized coat closet…except you. Obsessing about it will only leave you feeling stressed and bad about yourself.

HealthyWay
iStock

Close the door and move on with your life.

Worrying About Everything Being Perfect

Studies show that women worry about perfection much more than men do. If women are doing five things and four are going well but one is not, they’ll hyper focus on that particular not-so-great thing. Some experts believe this is a cultural phenomenon, while others think it may be genetic.

HealthyWay
iStock

Regardless of which it is, we think that the person who said this has got the right answer: “If you have to force it, leave it. Relationships. Yoga poses. Perfect pony tails. Let that s*** go.

Trying to Do Everything

As you’re making dinner, you’re talking to your mom, while you’re doing crunches, writing a check, and googling where to go to dinner next week. Although studies show that women can multitask effectively, sometimes trying to do too much ends up being more of an act of messing up several things at once.

HealthyWay
iStock

Try doing one thing well, rather than 10 things poorly.

Living in the Future

I’ll be so happy when I make more money. When I have a house, then things will be perfect. When I lose 20 pounds, then I’ll find a husband.

HealthyWay
iStock

Thinking about being happy in the future, doesn’t make you happy in the present. A Harvard study showed that people who were focused on what they were doing and who they were in the present were the happiest. Those who thought ahead or daydreamed were miserable. Take a look around you, count your blessings and be happy for yourself right now!

Fearing Being Labeled a B****

Men who are pushy at work and demand what they want are called go-getters; when women act the exact same way, they often get pasted with a nasty label. So women—not wanting to be viewed as difficult—change their behavior, which results in them getting less of what they want (and often less of what they deserve).

HealthyWay
iStock

It’s time to stand tall, employ a “sticks and stones” mentality, and power through with confidence in your decisions and desires. You’ve earned them.

Obsessing Over Their Body

The universe made all people unique so that we could appreciate and celebrate our differences: Differently shaped hips, differently shaped breasts, differently shaped legs. Some are bigger, some are smaller, some are in between. As our kids often remind us, “You get what you get, and you don’t get upset.”

HealthyWay
iStock

We’ll take it a step further and add, “You take what you’ve got, and you love it with all you’ve got!”

Checking Social Media 24/7

Studies show that 30 percent of women check their social media multiple times a day, and although it makes them feel connected, it can make them feel anxious as well. It seems that obsessing over others’ seemingly perfect lives makes women feel not very good about themselves.

HealthyWay
iStock

Try going on a social media hiatus for a month and see how great it feels to live your own life in real time.

Doing Things Because You Have to

There are a whole lot of things that you HAVE to do in life: pay your taxes, stop at red lights, brush your teeth. Those are the non-negotiables. But how about other things that you often feel like you must do, even though you really don’t want to?

HealthyWay
iStock

Try an exercise the next time you feel obligated to do something that you’d rather not. Ask yourself, “What would be the worst thing that would happen if I didn’t do this? And don’t do it. Then feel what it’s like to be free!

Feeling Guilty About Eating

You can feel guilty that you missed your friend’s birthday. Or that you forgot to pick up the dry cleaning. Or that you haven’t seen your parents in a while.

HealthyWay
iStock

But living your life counting every calorie and dissecting every morsel that you eat is not only a waste of your precious time, it’s self-defeating! Life is short and cupcakes taste good. Have a bite (or three).

7 Gross Things All Women Do But Will Never Admit To

Men and women both do gross things sometimes. The difference between men and women is that men are often more inclined to admit to their “gross doings.”
Women tend to keep it covert, like they’re getting away with something. What many women don’t realize, though, is that some of their covert, gross habits could actually be harming their health.
Think you’re clean and this doesn’t apply to you? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 50 percent of healthy people have the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus living in or on their noses, throats, hair, or skin. Researchers in London report that if everyone routinely washed their hands, a million deaths a year could be prevented.

HealthyWay
iStock

Check out the list of gross things that all women do…and what happens when they do them.

Use Samples in the Shop

Is this you?
You’re in the department store and it’s a makeup sample smorgasbord. You go crazy trying the newest mascara, lipstick, and powder—without taking the time to clean everything (like you know you should).

HealthyWay
iStock

Why it’s bad:
When you use a personal product that has been shared with other people, you’re exposing yourself to all the bacteria or viruses that they have or were carrying. Rowan University researchers tracked makeup testers over a two-year period and found staph, strep, and E. coli bacteria, as well as the viruses responsible for cold sores and pinkeye on the makeup testers.
HealthyWay
iStock

What you should do:
If you want to try on makeup at a counter, stick with disposable applicators. Also, try to sanitize all products that are able to be cleaned, like lipsticks and eye shadows. It’s also helpful to shave down any eye or lip pencils.

Never Clean Makeup Brushes

Is this you?
Do you continue to use the same makeup brushes over and over without cleaning them? Do your makeup brushes feel stiff and hard? Are they often wet or stored in moist conditions, like in your bathroom?

HealthyWay
iStock

Why it’s bad:
Bacteria, dust, and dirt can collect on brushes, allowing for the perfect environment for colonies of bacteria to live and reproduce. Every time you dip your uncleaned brush in your makeup, you can be reinfecting it and your face—over and over. This can cause irritation, breakouts, skin infections, and clogged pores.
HealthyWay
iStock

What you should do:
We know it’s a pain, but it’s worth the trouble! Professionals recommend that you clean your makeup brushes at least once a month.

Never Clean Their Hairbrushes

Is this you?
Does your hairbrush have a life of its own? Is there so much hair on your brush that you can hardly see the stem of the brush? Do you remember the last time you cleaned your brush? Have you ever cleaned your brush?

HealthyWay
iStock

Why it’s bad:
Product residue, dead skin cells from your scalp, and oil can sit on your brush and act as a host for bacteria and yeast to colonize. This can leave your brush not only sticky and smelly, but also bad for your health.
HealthyWay
iStock

What you should do instead:
Professionals say that your course of action really depends on how much you wash your hair. The less that you wash and the more you use styling products and stuff in your hair, the more often you should clean it. They recommend that you thoroughly clean your brush at least once a month and keep up with a spray cleaning once a week.

Put Makeup Back in the Container When You Take out Too Much

Is this you?
You poured out too much concealer, so what do you do? You pour the excess back in and scrape your hand to make sure you get everything. How bad could it be?

HealthyWay
iStock

Why it’s bad:
Your hands are a petri dish of dirty stuff. Product that gets on your hands is contaminated with the bacteria and dirt and gets put back in the container to reproduce.
British doctor Chris van Tulleken and Queen Mary University of London microbiologist Ron Cutler did a study that involved swabbing the hands of 50 people on the streets of London to determine how much bacteria is on the the average person’s hands. The results were quite disgusting. Everyone had bacteria on their hands, and 26 to 30 percent of the people had fecal matter. One quarter of the people were “heavily contaminated” (three times more than the average), and 10 percent were “grossly contaminated,” carrying 10 to 50 times more than the average person.
HealthyWay
iStock

What you should do:
Never, ever put product back in a container. Use it or lose it.

Try on Bathing Suits or Lingerie Without Underwear

Is this you?
It happens more often than you think. Layers of underwear are bulky and don’t give you the exact appearance of the bathing suit or underwear that you’re trying on—so you take it off and figure “I’ll just wear it for 3 minutes. It can’t be that bad.”

HealthyWay
iStock

Why it’s bad:
A study done by the microbiology and pathology department of the New York University School of Medicine found that underwear and bathing suits in department stores possessed an alarming amount of microflora (bacteria from your large intestine) and also skin, fecal bacteria, yeast, and even salmonella. Think those sticky strips will save your precious parts? Think again! The researchers found that they don’t help much at all.
HealthyWay
iStock

What you should do:
Always, ALWAYS try on bathing suits or underwear over your underwear. Be sure to wash your new clothing as soon as you get home. Also, try to wash your hands after trying on the clothes.

Share Your Bed With Your Pets

We all have a soft spot for our furry companions, making it hard to say no when they just want to be close to you. Is it really that bad? Watch the video below to find out the gross reasons why you should rethink letting Scruffy share your bed.

Not Wash Your Hair and Live on Dry Shampoo

Is This You?
For the fifth day in a row you’ve gotten up late and have no time to shower! You spray your entire head with dry shampoo (again), brush, and hope for the best.

HealthyWay
iStock

Why it’s bad:
Washing your hair not only makes your hair look and smell good, it’s actually good for your health! Your scalp should be thought of as an extension of the skin on your face. When you clean your head and your scalp, you remove dead skin, germs, and bacteria.
HealthyWay
iStock

What you should do:
The CDC reports that within the first 15 minutes of bathing, the average person sheds 6 x 106 colony forming units (CFU) of Staphylococcus aureus. Professionals recommend that you wash your hair every other day (with a twice-a-week washing being an absolute must).
