Until recently, the last time I made homemade holiday gifts was when I was in elementary school. Since then, DIY holiday endeavors have brought to mind childlike crafts that never come out quite as planned. Needless to say, DIY and chic were not terms I associated very closely.
However, this year I discovered that DIY holiday presents have grown up. Thanks to social media (hey there, Pinterest and Instagram) there are now plenty of do-it-yourself holiday projects that are fun to make and even more enjoyable to receive. Most of us have a secret—or not-so-secret—love of crafting, so this year why not reconnect with the thrill and satisfaction of making the perfect gift with your own two hands?
Plus, you’ll be able to avoid the stores, which at this point are packed with last-minute shoppers. Here are three chic DIY gifts that will leave your girlfriends going gaga!
In winter, almost everyone loves curling up with a warm cup of cocoa, coffee, or tea. It’s even more enjoyable when you’re sipping from a great mug that puts a smile on your face. That’s why making custom coffee mugs for your friends is such a great idea. You can customize each mug, delivering just the right dose of inspiration, silliness, or sarcasm to get your friend through her morning.
This technique from the blog Glued To My Crafts is great since you don’t need to worry about things getting messy with paints and brushes. Just order or pick up plain ceramic mugs and oil-based Sharpies (not the ones we see most often since those will wash off in the dishwasher).
You can use stencils, or just draw whatever comes to you. When you’re done, make sure your kitchen is well ventilated and put the mugs in the oven at 350°F for half an hour. Then turn off the oven and leave the mugs inside until they’re cool. In just a few hours, you’ll have a great DIY gift that your friends will love!
If your girlfriends have a taste for savory treats, consider making them infused olive oil, which can be used for cooking, dipping breads, or dressing salads. This chic twist on the classic holiday treat jar looks beautiful and is an unusual gift that most people will enjoy using. Plus, your friend might even invite you over for a great meal featuring the oil you gifted her.
To get started, purchase a large container of high-quality olive oil. Simply pour oil into each of your selected containers, adding ingredients that have complimentary flavors. Rosemary, peppercorns, and sun-dried tomatoes will all look pretty in the packaging while delivering great flavor. Thyme, oregano, and sage are also popular options.
Over time, the olive oil will pick up the flavors from the jar, giving it an extra level of sophistication. One note of caution: Be sure to only use dried herbs (nothing that contains water), to avoid bacteria growth.
If your friends are as busy as you are, they probably need time to relax. What better way to do that that in a luxurious bath? Gifting your friends bath salts will inspire them to take some time for themselves, which is exactly what most busy women need around the holidays—or at least first thing in the new year!
To make your salts, combine one part baking soda, three parts Epsom salts, and six parts sea salts (according to Martha Stewart’s recipe). Add a few drops of fragrance and color (if desired) and mix it all together. For an especially festive take, layer different colored salts on top of each other in a clear jar. Just be sure to seal the container tightly to keep the salt from clumping before use.
This year, save money and have fun by giving DIY gifts. Your friends—and your bank account—will love it!
Are you anxious to grow older?
I’ll admit, I am…at least a little. With age comes experience, and with more experience, I sense I am becoming wiser. I’m better equipped to handle situations and adhere to my convictions, and I enjoy life more often than not.
But even though I look forward to each birthday and the age it brings, I don’t necessarily want to look older. In fact, as each year passes, I’d like to [linkbuilder id=”6705″ text=”look younger”], fresher, and healthier. It’s my goal to somewhat maintain the look of my current age, at least.
You too? Well, some habits you and I have might be doing us a disservice—things like late weekend nights and ignoring that Brussels sprout recipe we keep saying we’ll give a try. They may seem harmless, but a few not so great habits over time really add up…and add years to our face, figure, heart, and more.
If staying young is on your agenda, perhaps it’s time to identify and eliminate habits that age you. Aging is inevitable, but no one should be unnecessarily rushing to the finish line.
What can benefit all of us the most is to take a step back, simplify, and listen to our body.
In my efforts to analyze habits that age us, I have the opportunity to connect with Stephanie Riley, a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer with a certification in fitness nutrition. She is not only a coach of sorts, but an athlete who has participated in over 20 marathons and other competitions, like bodybuilding and Ironman distance triathlons.
“… all of us can learn from our own experiences and the ability to be brutally honest about where we succeed and where we can continue to grow,” Riley shares on the topic of habits. “I believe a lot of people can become disenchanted, frustrated, or confused by constantly following all the ‘noise’ that is out there on the market, never knowing who to listen to and who to ‘follow.'”
“What can benefit all of us the most is to take a step back, simplify, and listen to our body. It really, truly does not have to be that hard to make small changes that can and will create profound improvements in our lives.”
So, what habits should we begin resolving? Pick a few from below.
Allowing Too Much Screen Time
“The more strict I am with my screen time, the more my quality of life improves,” Gemma, a mom of three, says. “Setting strict limits on both social media and TV makes me more productive, less stressed, and I get to bed at a decent hour!”
Both stress and not enough sleep greatly impact overall wellness. If TV time and that iPad hanging out by your bed are producing worry and keeping you from rest, it’s time to say goodbye!
Not Drinking Enough Water
“Let’s face it, most of us have a hard time getting our water in,” Riley says. “It’s hard to remember when we get busy with work, family, and everything else on our plate. However, drink water. Period. Initially, it’s hard. You will have to run to the restroom constantly at first. Give it time, stay the course, and that initial running to the bathroom will slow down.”
“Your body needs it, uses it, and functions exponentially better with it. Give it a try for a month. Drink 64 to 100 ounces of water a day for a month. I guarantee you will not know how you functioned without it.”
Of course, be sure to spread your water consumption out over the day, and don’t overdo it if you don’t feel thirsty.
Postponing Checkups
My husband’s employer actually incentivizes their team in this regard—to the tune of $100! They know annual wellness appointments are that important.
Why? It’s simple. Checking in with your doctor allows them to address concerns and catch potential issues before they’re a life-altering problem. Blood work and screenings keep you healthy, alive, and flourishing. So, if you haven’t been to your doctor in the last year, call them. Today.
Under-Hydrating Your Skin
M’Lissa Fleming, an independent consultant with anti-aging skincare brand Rodan + Fields, can’t emphasize enough how important using moisturizer is: “The human skin is the body’s largest organ. Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized helps avoid many skin problems such as blemishes and wrinkles.”
“Moisturizer with SPF is the best way to multi-task keeping your skin healthy,” Fleming adds. “If your skin is not hydrated and becomes dry and cracked, you’ve lost protection and your skin becomes … vulnerable to outside elements.”
So, don’t forget it! When you appropriately moisturize, you’ll prevent those lines and wrinkles, and no doubt you’ll look younger.
Not Keeping a Bed Time
Our bodies benefit from a regular sleep schedule, which means Saturday night should look very similar to Tuesday night. “Your body is either trying to survive or flourishing,” says Riley.
“How can it flourish when its exhausted? Quit asking your body to do more when you give to it less. Sleep! It’s okay!”
Avoiding Counseling
“I don’t know how its become a perception that counseling, coaching, or therapy is a negative or that it somehow shows weakness,” says Riley. “My husband and I have had a life coach for 20 years.”
We don’t have all the answers. Nor should we have all the answers.
“I have had marathon coaches, triathlete coaches, and medical doctors at training clinics to help my athletic performance,” she says. “So how is a coach in life any different?”
“Would a person then say ‘Oh, she has a coach, she must be terrible in the sport,’ or ‘She sure doesn’t know what she’s doing,’ or ‘Boy, she must really not know how to do it on her own.’ No one would say that. How is a counselor any different?”
Besides being a safe space for exploring one’s feelings, counseling also offers scientifically-proven benefits. According to a study from the University of California-Los Angeles, verbally expressing feelings calms negative feelings. Additionally, research in Psychiatry 2007says that social support, like the kind a life coach or therapist provides, is a key part of maintaining one’s mental and physical wellbeing.
“Finding a counselor who you connect with and who can listen to your life’s experience with not only professional training on the human condition but also their own life experiences is a tool that everyone could use,” Riley says. “We don’t have all the answers. Nor should we have all the answers. I highly recommend a counselor for all of us … .”
Amen to that! Counselor up!
Letting Stress Rule
“Stress will always be an element in our lives. But we can control it, or it can control us,” says Riley.
In most of our lives, I’d venture to say that taming stress is a minute by minute task. But gaining control of those minutes really adds up—according toPsychology Today, emotional distress can speed up aging on a cellular level. No thanks!
Forgetting Outdoor Exercise
We all know that outdoor exercise feels amazing once you’ve actually completed it, but it often gets left out of busy routines in favor of the ever-convenient treadmill. In the video below, certified health and life coach Sabrina Renee shares the benefits she gets from taking her exercise outside:
Falling For Fad Diets
Fad diets come in many shapes and sizes. Some only include raw food, others needlessly cut gluten, others include only liquids to “cleanse” your system, and a few even include things that aren’t food in the first place.
As an athlete, Riley knows food. Her training has led her to delve deep into nutrition. When it comes to fad diets, she shakes her head.
“I cringe at people trying to make a buck on misconceptions, false advertising, and ‘studies’ that are bogus to get buy-ins on their products,” she says. “Quite simply, there is no one size fits all. I recommend stepping off the hamster wheel and remind yourself that all this food thing doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t.”
“Many people are looking for that new special thing out there, that ‘new’ ideology that has all the answers, that ‘ah-ha’ revelation. When we try to follow all the minutia out there, all it does is create this odd, fearful relationship with food, confusion and anxiety.”
“Allow yourself to enjoy good food, be aware of what you are eating, allow treats in moderation, and get your fruits and vegetables in on a regular basis. That’s it. Chop, cook, and eat at home. Make it a priority.”
Not Nourishing Your Body
Food is complex, and our choices are vast. But bottom line, nutrition is crucial to fueling our bodies and keeping them in their prime. “Many people I see are extremely undernourished,” says Riley.
… with time and effort, almost any habit can be reshaped.
Some women in particular, she says, have been undernourished “for so long that they have issues with hormones and are malnourished in many vitamins and minerals … We are depriving our body of what it desperately needs. Make it a habit to get in the nutrients one needs through proper [linkbuilder id=”6706″ text=”food choices”].”
MyPlate, the successor to the classic Food Pyramid, is a good place to start for those unsure about their nutritional needs. The MyPlate site even offers daily checklists for healthy eating and optimum nutritional intake. The National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute also provides an easy-to-read roadmap for maintaining a healthy weight and meeting nutritional goals.
Nutrition calculators, like MyFitnessPal and MyPlate Calorie Counter, are easy ways to keep track of and manage your nutritional intake.
How many of these not so harmless habits are part of your life?
They say it takes at least 21 days to break a bad habit. Charles Duhigg, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author of The Power of Habit wrote, “Change might not be fast and it isn’t always easy. But with time and effort, almost any habit can be reshaped.”
You can reshape your habits. Reading this article alone means you have initiative. So, set some goals, make it happen, and remember Duhigg’s Golden Rule of Habit Change, “You can’t extinguish a bad habit, you can only change it.”
No matter your age, there’s always a day or two when you wish you could look a little younger. Sure, you’re already beautiful as you are, but for those early mornings after a night of no sleep, you might want to know a trick or two to turn the clock back a bit.
You may already have a few go-to tips when you want that youthful glow, but in case you’d like to add some new tools to your makeup bag, I talked to a few professional makeup artists for their expert advice.
Also, I had the unique experience of being a stage and TV actress for a while, and I learned quite a lot from the many makeup artists I worked with over the years. It turns out that the inside tips they use to make you look good on camera often work just as well in real life!
So, if you want the dewy glow of a teenager or just a little extra sparkle in your eyes, here are all the pro tips that’ll keep you looking young!
The Whites of Your Eyes
My favorite theater makeup tip was a way to make your eyes look brighter, which, in turn, takes a couple years off your look. After your eyeshadow application, put a bit of pure white on the corners of your eyes by the tear ducts.
This tip isn’t unique to theater. In fact, most of the professional makeup artists I spoke to gave the same advice. The bit of white draws attention to your eyes and actually makes them look a little bigger. Plus, the white brightens up potential discoloration around the eyes which makes you look more awake and energized.
On stage, you can add a lot of white before you start looking crazy, but in real life, a little dab will do. Be sure to blend the white into your eyeshadow, but you don’t need to make it disappear completely.
If you’d like a fancier or more festive look, put a bit of light-colored shimmer over the white. Then your eyes will really sparkle!
Go easy with foundation.
One of the main steps in most, if not all, make-up routines is foundation. If you use it correctly, foundation can cover up blemishes and smooth out your skin. However, many people make a crucial, cakey mistake in their quest to look younger. For an insider tip on how to fully benefit from your foundation, take a look at our video below.
Keep it creamy.
As lines start to form on your face (it’s not a bad thing, and it happens to all of us), you may want to change your makeup to suit your changing skin. One easy way to do this is to use cream-based products.
Professional makeup artist, Bustle beauty expert, and owner of Sugar Skull Makeup Marissa Hohner says, “Cream blushes, cream eyeshadow, cream highlighters will all give you a younger appearance.” The cream adds hydration to your skin. “The more moisturized your skin looks, the younger your skin appears,” Hohner says.
While blush and eyeshadow can make dry skin look drier, creams go on smooth and hide all the little imperfections. Plus, there’s something super satisfying about using a stick of blush. I can’t explain it, but it’s true.
Make friends with concealer.
Find a concealer you love. Covering up under-eye circles or little skin imperfections always makes you look instantly younger. I love the light, but pigmented, Instant Age Rewind. It covers my exceptionally dark circles without having to cake on layers and layers of makeup.
Hohner has an additional concealer tip: Set with powder! “By using a lightweight, loose, translucent powder to set your under-eye concealer, you will prevent your concealer from creasing and accentuating any crow’s feet or fine lines under and around the eye.”
Concealer getting cakey under your eyes can be a big problem, but a little setting powder solves the issue completely.
The best part about concealer is how easy it is. Honestly, if you don’t have time for a full face, just pop on some concealer, seal with powder, and head out the door. Simply covering up under-eye circles makes you look years younger, and it’s super easy to do.
For bad circles, add a little orange.
Once, a makeup artist who was working with me took out some orange lipstick and I got scared. As a super pale lady, orange lips are not my deal. “No, it’s for your eyes,” she said. I got more scared. But, she used a bit of it under my concealer to cancel out the purple of my under-eye circles…and it worked great!
You may have seen YouTube videos of makeup bloggers bragging about using red lipstick for circles under your eyes. But Instyle (and I) agree that a little orange under the concealer is the best way to go.
According to the magazine, red and orange are opposite of blues and purples on the color wheel, so the colors cancel each other out. But orange is less harsh than red, so it blends more easily while still combating the darkness under your eyes.
Now, this concealer trick can vary a lot based on your skin tone. If you have darker skin, a red might be the best. If you have fair skin, a peach tone works great. Have some fun with your reddy-orange lipsticks and see what works best for you!
All About Those Brows
“It’s all about the ‘brows!” says professional makeup artist Rosa Fasolo, who’s worked with everyone from JWoww of Jersey Shore to David Tutera on WETV’s CELEBrations. “As we get older, our eyebrows begin to lighten, grow less hair, and can sometimes become almost non-existent and lose their shape,” Fasolo says.
But adding back some shape can work wonders, according to Fasolo: “One of my favorite ‘never fail’ makeup hacks that makes all the difference, especially when trying to achieve a younger look, is filling in and darkening the eyebrows and giving them a nice full shape.”
She truly thinks this is the most important step for a lively, youthful look. “You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference it makes!”
Lashes: Go big or go home.
Think of all the things that have beautifully long lashes: babies, Disney Princesses, baby deer. I mean, when’s the last time a “doe-eyed” person looked old? Never! If you’ve seen an old doe in the forest, I’d truly be surprised.
Clearly, long lashes give you an instantly youthful look. But just like the brows, our lashes grow thinner as we age. So, we just have to work a little harder to get the long lashes of our dreams.
Feel free to add a little extra mascara to gain length and volume, or go all out with false lashes. When the rest of your makeup is light, going a little heavy on the lashes doesn’t look out of place—it looks nice!
If you are curious about fake lashes, but are hesitant to wear a full set, start with individual lashes. The Cut recommended applying single lashes on the outer corners of your eyes. Then, if you want to add more, feel free! This way you can have as much or as little lash as you want. Plus, it’ll look super natural.
The biggest tip, though, is to start with the skin.
Every makeup artist agreed on the best way to look young: Have good skin! Okay, that’s a bit of a simplification, but every professional knows that taking care of your skin is always the most important part of any makeup routine.
“Great makeup always starts with a base of a strong skincare routine,” Hohner says. She recommends cleansing twice a day and exfoliating a few times a week—no matter your age. For an extra youthful look, add some vitamin C to your routine. “Using products with vitamin C in them promotes collagen growth in your skin, balances out discoloration/sun spots and prevents/tightens the appearance of lines and wrinkles in the skin.” So, with some care and vitamin C, you can slow aging down without any makeup.
For an extra youthful glow, Caren Sayadian, owner of Caren Beauty, recommends using a serum and primer before putting on foundation. “Otherwise, the makeup just ‘sits’ on the skin, which can look patchy and uneven, as more mature skin lacks collagen and makes it feel dry,” Sayadian says.
A good primer fills in pores and lines, so you get solid, even coverage from just a little bit of foundation.
Then, to complete your look, add a bit of powder. “Do not over powder the entire face,” Sayadian says, “as youthful skin has a natural glow.” You don’t want to cover up your glow. Let it show! Okay, enough rhymes.
But honestly, the most important tip to look young? Love how you look. If you feel good, you’ll look good, no matter what makeup you wear.
No matter how long you’ve been with your partner, it’s still vital to go on dates. Keeping the romance fresh is fun, it fills up your heart, and it can help you reconnect with your favorite person.
Marriage therapist Michelene M. Wasil, LMFT, says that connecting on dates is the most important part of keeping relationships close. “Dates where you are in the same room together, like going to a movie, are okay, but not truly connecting” says Wasil.
So how can you go above and beyond to invest in the health of your relationship? Enter a carefully curated list of fun date-night ideas that will have you engaging with your special someone in no time. There’s a little something for everyone, and not a dinner-and-a-movie situation in sight.
Active and Sporty Dates
1. Skydive
If getting out of a slump is what you need, skydiving is the way to go! Nothing gets your adrenaline pumping quite like jumping out of an airplane. After the big jump, find a relaxed restaurant where you can refuel your body and share a toast to having made it! Stay as long as the restaurant will let you and have a good chat.
2. Play Each Other’s Favorite Sports
If you’re a basketball kinda gal and your partner loves hockey, make time to play both. This is especially helpful if one of you isn’t too familiar with the other’s game of choice. Lots of tender teaching moments and close embraces will be necessary as one of you shows the other how to bust all the right moves. You’ll have that rom-com sparkle in your eyes in no time.
3. Couples vs. Couples Game
Pick a sport you and two or three of your favorite couples know like volleyball, soccer, softball, or touch football. Winning team gets to pick dinner, losing team buys. This is a great way to get yourself and some friends out of that infamous dinner-and-a-movie rut.
4. Hike to a Lookout
Not only is hiking good for your body, but it will involve a bunch of romantic stops along the way to a beautiful lookout. Pack your favorite snacks, plenty of water, lip balm for post make-out session lip care, and your camera so you can capture the ultimate vista.
5. Mini Golf
Odds are you aren’t hitting up the local mini-golf course for a weekly round. But, if it’s some low-key fun you and your favorite person need, two putters await. Mini golf is basically just putting, but it can be a fun way to get out of your comfort zone and connect.
Outdoor Dates
6. Visit a Greenhouse and Pick Out a Houseplant
Both cohabitating couples and those who live separately can appreciate a new houseplant. Walking through a greenhouse you can spy all kinds of cool plants that one or both of you may never have seen before. Adding a little bit of greenery into your space is always a positive thing. It cleans your air and can bring you joy. Plus, who doesn’t love a date that involves a souvenir?
7. Take a Walking Tour of Your City
Play tourist for a day. Even if you’ve lived in the same city for years, there is always something new to see. You can download apps like Detour, Tourpal, or Urban Walks to get guided tours on your phone. Invest in a headphone splitter or go for the one-earbud-apiece approach, walk hand in hand, and explore your city together.
8. Try an Escape Room
Wasil says she frequently recommends that couples try an escape room. “It gives couples a chance to work together as a team and solve a problem”
She recommends this date specifically for “couples who just need to have some fun together outside of the kids and all the other life stressors.” We feel that! After your escape room victory, celebrate by indulging in some good food and drink at your favorite spot.
9. People Watch Your Town Square
Find a restaurant with outdoor seating facing an interesting street and plunk down. You can order some appetizers and watch the world go by. Turn your date into a playful game by guessing where people are going or what they’re up to. This can spark so many deep conversations. Weather permitting, give it a try this weekend.
Foodie Dates
10. DIY Picnic
For couples who need some time to chill out, a do-it-yourself picnic is just the ticket. Wasil says you should find a serene setting and go through some of the 36 Questions In Love. The food is really just the cherry on top of having a deep conversation with your partner.
11. Take a Cooking Class
Cooking together can be a great activity for couples who need to reconnect. You’re working together on a project and at the end you get a tasty meal to share. Taking a cooking class can be a fun way to get both of you started in the kitchen if you’re still feeling your way around meal prep and fresh ingredients.
Choose a class that focuses on a food you both love. Learning how to make your favorite dish is an enjoyable investment, and once you have that knowledge, you’ll be able to recreate it for a future date night at home!
12. Homemade Personal Pizza
Everyone loves pizza, right? Making pizza (that doesn’t start in the freezer section) at home is surprisingly easy. Follow along step-by-step with our favorite pizza recipe from The Kitchn. You can each choose your own toppings and can use your time in the kitchen getting ready for some of the best pizza you’ve ever had.
13. Find an Undiscovered Restaurant Gem
You could go to any old restaurant, but then again, why not take your weekly night out up a notch by really investing in your restaurant choice? Scour your local Yelp pages to find a little hole-in-the-wall spot you’ve never tried. You can make it into a game with your partner (a little competition never hurts). Go back and forth seeking out and choosing new, under-rated restaurants. Maybe you can even write a review together!
14. Attend a Local Brewery
Chances are there is a large brewery or microbrew pub not too far from where you live. Breweries often hold tours (some involve ticket sales that include beer samples, others are free) that will allow you to see how your favorite lager, ale, or stout is made. The same thing goes for wineries and distilleries depending on your locale. Learning about something together (while sipping on the good stuff) is always a wonderful way to connect with your favorite person.
15. Do Trivia Night at a Local Restaurant or Bar
Trivia nights, especially themed trivia nights can be a whole lot of fun. This is another date where you can invite your couple friends out as a group!
Artsy Dates
16. BYOB Painting Class
Painting classes that invite you to bring your own beverages can only be a good time. These types of classes often have instructors who will guide you as you paint a rendition of a specific piece of art. You’ll learn some new techniques and have a freshly painted canvas to hang in your personal gallery, also known as your abode.
17. Visit a Gallery or Two
While hanging your own art at home is definitely satisfying, seeing an art gallery can be moving and enlightening. Lisa Cooper, owner of Elisa Contemporary Art in New York City says a gallery date is a great idea. “It provides a fun, engaging environment and it provides insights into each person based on what artwork they respond to and why.”
As we’ve discussed before, connecting with your partner and talking about something new is a great way for long-term couples to revitalize their relationships.
18. See a Play at a Local Theater
When’s the last time you saw a play? Taking in a play (instead of a movie) can give you and your partner so much to talk about, and the joys of local theater are not to be missed. It’s also an easy way to support local businesses and your own neighbors.
19. Attend a Podcast Taping
Have a podcast that you just love? See if they’re touring or if they have open tapings. In the last few years, podcasting has really taken off and many bigger podcast productions go on tour. Seeing a taping live can be exciting and give you endless conversation starters for afterward.
20. Find a Local Music Night
Local bars and restaurants that have live music are gems when it comes to exceptional dates. Get a good meal in and enjoy a band you may never have heard before. The best way to find smaller music nights is by checking out different restaurants’ social media pages for updates that include their music lineups.
Basically Free Dates
21. Rent a Bike and Tour Your City
Not down for a lengthy walking tour? Rent (if you don’t own) bikes to see your city in a new way. Bike to a part of town you don’t get to enjoy often and just explore.
22. Volunteer Together
Giving back is good for your community and your relationship. Volunteering can really fill up your heart and is a good way for the two of you to connect over a cause you’re both passionate about. Find a local shelter and help make dinner, or call your local animal rescue to see if they need some helping hands.
Pro-tip: Many animal shelters need people to socialize with animals, which basically means playing with puppies for an hour.
23. Learn How to Give Massages
Learning to give each other massages feels lovely and can also help both of you relax. There are a bunch of different resources that can show you how to use professional techniques in the privacy of your own home. We suggest starting with Carrington College’s beginner’s guide to massage. It’s thorough and helps you get down the basics so you can help (not hurt!) your significant other.
Date Night At Home
24. Screen-Free Date Night
Turn off your phones and computers, light some candles, and get in touch with your boo. You can read to each other, chat about the future, or get giggly and tell each other jokes. Having a no-electronics rule will compel both of you to think outside the box and do something that differs from your day in, day out routine.
25. Game Night
Break out old-school Mario Kart if you have it, or turn to other nostalgic games you used to love. Check out two-player board games like Carcassone, Yinish, and Mancala, or opt for a casual game of checkers. Playing board games means engaging with both your partner and your inner child.

26. Go Swimming
Grab your sunscreen, find a local waterpark, pool, lake, river, or wherever, and don your favorite swim suit. Swimming with your significant other is fun exercise and a satisfying way to cool off in hot weather. Getting a little sun is always wonderful, too!
27. Go Fishing
If either one of you is a seasoned angler, teaching the other to fish can be exceptionally relaxing (and potentially entertaining). Bring snacks and drinks, your fishing gear, and a permit if you need one. Fishing allows you to chat (quietly so you don’t scare the fish away!) and enjoy some time in the great outdoors.
28. Water Balloon Fight
Don’t laugh! A water balloon fight may feel a bit childish, but it can be a sweet way to cool down and have some laughs. Plus, you’ll get to talk about your epic water balloon fight for years to come.
Cool Weather Dates
29. Visit a Holiday Market
Festivals are fun all year long, but during the winter holidays they’e especially romantic. Wrap up in warming layers, nurse a cup of mulled wine, and get cozy with your one and only. Holiday markets usually have booths with trinkets that make for great in-law gifts, too.
30. Snowball Fight
If you can water balloon fight, you can snowball fight! Really, it’s one of the best kinds of fights a couple can have. Finish your snowy war with a couple of cups of hot chocolate (more on that below!) and a warm blanket to share. Curling up by a toasty fire afterward shouldn’t be missed either!
31. Build a Snowman Together
Creating together is one of the best ways to connect and get to talking with your partner without the humdrum of everyday life distracting either of you. If you have kids, this can also be a great way to have family fun all together.
32. DIY Hot Cocoa Bar
Hot cocoa is a cold weather delight. Not only will it warm you up during winter’s chill, but a little bit of sugar and cocoa will have you feeling like a cheerful couple in no time. Line up your favorite chocolate with peppermint sticks, cinnamon sticks, marshmallows, you name it! You can make your hot chocolate the exact way you like it then snuggle up for a comfy chat.
We’ve got some skinny hot chocolate ideas right here:

It works great for movie nights, lounging, sleepovers, or more casual (and thermostat-challenged) office environments. You don’t have to be a super-fan of The Little Mermaid to want this cozy tail for yourself. Just be sure to take it off before you try to walk anywhere.
6. Who says ‘90s technology is obsolete?
These floppy disk coasters prove that there’s still space for slower, more fragile digital storage devices in our lives. They won’t fit in a modern computer, of course, but they can protect a coffee table from unsightly condensation rings.

As far as pleasures go, a quick pedicure is one that has always felt pretty guilt-free.
It has always been one of my favorite ways to pamper myself at the end of a pregnancy or after a few difficult months of work or parenting. I love bringing a book along and just chilling for a few minutes before I get back to the day in, day out of being a working mom.
But after developing an ingrown toenail after my last pamper session, I learned that my occasional pedicures weren’t as innocent as they seemed. In fact, there are all sorts of risks associated with getting pedicures, from irritation to infection and beyond.
Do yourself (and your nails) a favor by doing your diligence before revisiting your favorite salon. Below are seven ways to do just that.
When you walk in, give the place a once over.
I get it, the massage chairs, heated foot baths, and tropical tones are alluring, but if you want to be sure you’ve picked the right salon, you have to walk in with a critical eye. Don’t so much as put your name down for a pedicure unless you’ve had a good look at the salon.
“It goes without saying that a salon should look clean—if it doesn’t, it probably isn’t, and you should go elsewhere,” says board certified dermatologist Robin Evans, MD. “Basins that your feet soak in should be cleaned in between clients. If you are not sure that this was done, ask the technician to clean it before you put your feet in.”
Don’t be afraid to turn around and walk out if you find yourself questioning the cleanliness of a salon. Ignoring your gut isn’t worth the risk.
Understand cleaning and sanitation procedures.
There are many salons that are only going through the motions when it comes to keeping things clean, Evans says. She says that it’s common practice to place instruments in a container that appears to be a sanitation device, but it’s merely a storage container for the tools.
And according to Evans, a little soap and water isn’t good enough.
“All metal tools that are used in a salon should … be cleaned in proper disinfectant solutions and then sterilized in an autoclave,” she says. “The type of autoclave really should be medical grade. For proper sterilization, the instruments should be placed in a clear packaged envelope that is sealed in the sterilization process.”
This type of care is warranted. It’s fairly common for the nail technician to cause microscopic nicks on a client during a pedicure, and without proper cleaning, this could become a vehicle for the transmission of bacteria, yeast, and even viruses.
So, what are you looking for exactly? The Environmental Protection Agency has approved specific disinfectants, typically bright blue liquids stored in glass jars.
Worried you won’t be able to tell if an instrument has been properly cleaned? Take Evans’ advice and bring your own. Showing up with nail clippers, cuticle nippers, and cuticle pushers might get you a few strange looks, but it could also save you from being exposed to unwanted bacteria.
Know which tools are single-serve only.
If a salon is following proper sanitation practices, you should be okay using their metal tools. However, instruments like nail files and buffers can’t really be cleaned (in fact, anything non-metal should never be used on more than one client), and polish is used over and over again without any way to avoid sharing bacteria.
“I personally saw a technician in a salon nick me [while cutting my cuticles] and then polish. They … touched my blood [with the brush] and then dipped directly in the nail polish bottle for the next customer’s use,” Evans shares.
The solution? Once again, Evans suggests bringing your own tools and polish. This is the surest way to be certain you won’t be sharing germs with another pedicure client.
Ann Phillips, a licensed master aesthetician in Park City, Utah, and founder of Zerenity Spa, couldn’t agree more. In fact, she believes that making the investment in your own set of tools is not only the safest choice, but also the most economical, since high quality pedicures can be pricey.
“Sometimes, we all just need a quick, $10 manicure, but there are things you can do to ensure you are getting the best bang for even the cheapest buck,” she says. “A great way to get around spending a ton of money while making sure your skin won’t suffer later is to invest in your own set of tools. Bring them with you when you need a quick mani.”
Put these ingredients on your “never” list.
If you’re still set on getting a salon pedicure, you need to know what ingredients are in the products they will be using on your feet and nails.
For starts, Evans says any polishes, topcoats, and base coats with ingredients like formaldehyde, toluene, and phthalates, should be avoided altogether. For instance, exposure to formaldehyde is associated with health risks such as skin irritation and reactions in the eyes, nose, and throat. Additionally, it is believed that high exposure to this toxic chemical is associated with an increased risk of cancer, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
“These chemicals are toxic, potential allergens, and literature suggests possible carcinogenicity. Avoid them if at all possible,” Evans urges.
So, what’s the solution? Thankfully, there are many salons that are starting to understand the risks associated with products containing these ingredients and are beginning to offer other options. Check out a salon’s website for information on what products they use. You should be able to review the ingredients in the salon.
Additionally, Phillips advises against allowing nail technicians to use plain squirt bottles filled with product as it is basically impossible to know for sure what is in these containers.
If you don’t have any luck there, look for providers of medical pedicures. These pedicures are held to a higher standard when it comes to sanitation procedures and product choices.
Do your skin a favor.
Making smart choices about your next pedicure isn’t just about avoiding bacteria and carcinogens: it’s about avoiding any products that could be hard on your skin. Do yourself a favor, and take Phillips’ advice on protecting your skin during a pedicure.
“Have you ever noticed that, about a week after you get a manicure or pedicure, [that] the skin around your nails and your cuticles is even worse than when you went in? It’s the reason so many people are willing to drop bigger bucks at fancier spas—and a lot of it has to do with one ingredient: alcohol,” she says.
The key is to find a salon that picks products that don’t contain alcohol. You should be able to get a straight answer by simply asking before you make an appointment, according to Phillips, although she admits that the salons that avoid alcohol are probably going to have a higher price point.
“Ask to take a peek at the ingredients, and ask your technician to avoid using anything with alcohol in it.”
Think twice before getting a gel manicure.
Gel manicures are known for lasting for up to two weeks after the service, and they have become incredibly popular for this reason. However, there are safety issues you should take into consideration before jumping on the bandwagon.
Many salons use UV lamps to set the gel manicure. Although the exposure is fairly short, repeating this service time and time again can eventually cause damage to your skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
The good news is that there are precautions you can take. First of all, many salons are making the switch to LED lights, which are much gentler on the skin of your hands. If an LED light isn’t an option, make sure your hands are covered with fingerless gloves that have an ultravoilet protective factor.
Watch for signs of trouble after you leave.
As much as we all hope that following the guidelines listed above will keep you from facing infection or a reaction to a product, it is always a good idea to be on the lookout for the first signs of trouble after a mani or pedi.
“I have treated many patients for infections which they contracted from their local nail salons – the infections can be painful, usually require treatment with oral antibiotics, may require drainage procedures, and could result in scarring or permanent damage to or loss of nails,” shares Evans.
Specifically, you want to watch for ingrown toenails, which will cause you pain and be swollen and tender to touch, according to Piedmont Healthcare. You should also keep an eye on your toenails, which will thicken and change color if you have a nail fungus. Infections can occur on your foot or legs and the first sign is redness and swelling. If any of these symptoms pop up, see your primary care physician right away.
If you love makeup or other beauty products, you probably have your go-to brands that routinely fill your makeup bag—and some are probably expensive. But with that higher price tag, are you automatically getting a better product?
High-end makeup aficionados often claim their products have better quality ingredients than their drugstore counterparts. Nevertheless, a quick scroll through your Instagram feed shows makeup fans everywhere achieving incredible looks with drugstore brands as well. In the battle of makeup types, which type reigns supreme?
Here’s my personal makeup confession: I buy almost all of my beauty products from department stores or high-end retailers. The extra cost is justifiable because I work from home, I mostly reserve my pricey makeup for special occasions, and the products last for months.
As I’m darting out of the department store, the highly saturated pigments of lipsticks and blushes capture my attention. Plus, I’m lured in by the promise of a mascara that won’t flake or a high-shine lip gloss that creates the perfect pout.
At different times in my life, though, I’ve used my fair share of drugstore cosmetics. In my college years, the price point of drugstore brands was more affordable to me, and I loved experimenting with the newest products on the market.
If I had any issues with an item I’d purchased, I could easily exchange or return it. But somewhere along the line, I stopped using drugstore makeup altogether, and I began to believe the best cosmetics came from high-end retailers.
In my search to find quality beauty products, was it necessary for me to switch from drugstore makeup to high-end cosmetics? Or could I have found great products at both price points?
To compare these two makeup categories, I spoke to several experts—a cosmetic chemist, a geneticist, a pharmacist, and a makeup artist—to gather insights across a variety of cosmetic specialties and find out the differences between drugstore makeup and high-end makeup. Suffice to say, it might be worth revisiting the products you’ve been using—after all, you may find some items are worth the splurge and others are worth the save.
All ingredients aren’t created equal.
Soraya Ali-Hope has some knowledge about the cosmetics industry; she’s worked in it for 34 years.
“All ingredients are not created equal,” says the president, founder, and cosmetic chemist for the Octagon Marketing Group, which helps producers formulate cosmetics. “Raw materials can be sourced from different countries and may be extracted from natural sources or synthesized in the laboratory.”
In general, the mass-market brands like CoverGirl or Revlon incorporate more synthetic and less expensive ingredients into their products. On the other hand, high-end products, like MAC or Bobbi Brown, often have premium formulations, higher quality ingredients, more pigment, and include more costly technologies in the creation of those products. Ali-Hope says high-end makeup brands regularly utilize “advanced chemistry for both liquids and dry powders.”
Frequently, high-end makeup has cleaner ingredients, fewer fillers, and a range of shades to suit your skin’s individual needs, and they may have a performance advantage over their drugstore “dupes” (less-expensive products that are similar to high-end versions).
Additionally, many drugstore lines have professional makeup artists test and promote their products after they have launched in store. With high-end cosmetics, it’s not uncommon for them to have artists involved in the formulation of each collection from start to finish.
The quantity of the ingredients varies.
Do two products that purportedly contain the same active ingredients perform the same? Not necessarily.
Consumers may not be aware that companies will promote their products as containing particular ingredients…while the quantity of those special ingredients vary among brands. Therefore, you might not get the same beneficial results from one product to another.
“There are definitely differences in ingredients and formulations for high-end brands over drugstore brands, particularly in the clinical quantity used in the formulations,” explains Neal Kitchen, chief geneticist and COO at makeup brand HydroPeptide. “Peptides (short chains of amino acids) are a great example of ingredients where the type of peptide and the quantity of the peptide are both essential for how effective the ingredient will be on your skin.”
Two brands could market the same ingredient but have significantly different results on the skin, explains Kitchen, if one brand is using it for marketing purposes rather than the clinical impact.
It’s a case of convenience versus performance.
Peter Matravers, PharmD, chief scientific officer for makeup seller Arbonne, explains the uses for high-end and drugstore brand makeup.
“For daily maintenance, functionality, and simple needs, I would say stick to mass-market brands if budget is an issue. Not all of your products need to be premium,” he says.
“Beyond general maintenance,” he continues, “you want to be aware of your specific needs that would benefit from premium, more performance-based formulas that deliver better results.”
Don’t go running off to high-end retailers just yet! At the end of the day, there seems to be a place for both drugstore and high-end cosmetics in your makeup bag. Drugstore brands formulate their products with affordability in mind. High-end products, on the other hand, are formulated to better suit an individual’s preference and goals, meaning the products serve more specific functions in your beauty routine.
What does the makeup artist have to say?
Chicago-based makeup artist, Vanessa Valliant from Valliant Beauty, says, that high-end products “tend to have a better range of classic colors for customers. While they may showcase a certain collection each season, they aren’t solely focused on trends. However, drugstore makeup brands love to pour out every trendy color that hits the market each season.”
Valliant—whose customer base includes celebrities, brides, fashion models, and everyday women—primarily favors high-end makeup brands due to their consistent formulations and wide range of pigments for each skin tone.
Drugstore brands, though, have the advantage when it comes to price point and experimentation. They can also be helpful when trying out new products (like the latest matte lipstick or a metallic eyeshadow you’ve been curious about) without committing to a higher cost.
Although not all ingredients are created equal, Vaillant says it’s all about the application of the makeup that can make or break your look.
“Anyone can take drugstore or high-end makeup and blend them to perfection on the skin, achieving an overall, amazing makeup look,” she says. “There are a few high-end makeup lines that have more longevity due to their waterproof ingredients. But for the most part, with the proper application, you can achieve longevity out of both drugstore and high-end cosmetics.”
Valliant tells her clients that there are some products worth the extra investment; additionally, she tells them there are drugstore items that work well and won’t cost them a small fortune.
Ultimately, the choice as to which makeup is right for you depends on your skin’s needs, the goals you have for the product, your likes and dislikes when it comes to specific cosmetics brands, and your budget.
So, when should you splurge? When should you save?
Splurge
Valliant recommends buying skincare products, foundation, a well-made set of brushes, and lipstick from high-end brands.
“Beautiful makeup begins with healthy skin. I love a good skincare line like Kiehl’s because your skin is the largest organ, and it must be hydrated daily. Plus, they have a wide range of products to fit your skin type,” she says. “Also, it’s important to spend a little extra money on foundation … because it tends to perform better on the skin, and it’s created to mimic the look of real skin. My personal choices for foundations and concealers are by Tom Ford and Dior.”
For brushes,” she continues, “I like NARS. Well-crafted brushes last longer; they’re softer on the skin and are more tailored to specific areas of the face. Lastly, purchase your lipsticks from a high-end brand like Bobbi Brown. There are many colors and textures to choose from, and they’re designed for a variety of skin tones. You can’t go wrong with a lipstick like that!”
Save
Valliant suggests purchasing mascara, eyeshadow palettes, blushers, highlighters, and eye pencils at the drugstore.
“Maybelline mascara is hands down the best mascara on the market—you’ll find one in every professional makeup artist’s kit,” she says. “If you’re looking for the latest trends, NYX carries the latest eyeshadow palettes, blushes, highlighters, and eye pencils. Nowadays, you can find a wide range of products to fit your budget and needs at most drugstores.”
What’s our takeaway: Drug Store or High-End Makeup?
Regardless of whether you prefer drugstore cosmetics or high-end makeup brands, it’s important to focus on what best suits your skin’s needs, from the price point to the wearability of the product. In the long run, the makeup brands that are right for you are the ones that nurture your skin and help you look and feel your best—regardless of the differences in how they’re made or where you bought them.
I want you to take a moment to think about how long you’ve been wearing makeup. How many years have you been committing a small part of your day to using products? How much have you changed your routine? And more importantly, how much have you not changed your routine?
No matter how many videos you’ve watched from beauty vloggers, there’s bound to be a few gaps in your hair and makeup knowledge. Even those with perfect eyebrows are probably doing something that’s not quite right.
Are you one of those people? Take a look at these common beauty blunders and see if you’ve been misusing any of your products.
1. Beauty Sponges
If you’re struggling to achieve smooth foundation application and basically wasting a whole lot of product thanks to your makeup sponge, then chances are you’re not using it correctly. Before you throw that beauty blender in the trash, ask yourself one question: Are you using it dry or damp?
Instead of applying your foundation with a dry sponge, make sure it’s damp, and gently dab the product on your face. Amazing, right?
Don’t forget: There are completely different rules for using silicone sponges. You don’t need to use nearly as much product, thanks to the non-absorbent material. You should also use a circular motion first before dabbing.
Speaking of flawless complexions, beauty blogger and YouTuber Lucy Kyselica—known as Loepsie to her readers and subscribers—thinks ideal coverage comes down to two things: the right color applied sparingly.
“I like to say there are no rules to makeup, but it always makes me a bit sad to see girls applying thick layers of foundation all over their faces like a mask, often covering up perfectly beautiful skin,” she says. “I’m a big fan of just using a light foundation to cover ‘problem areas,’ like parts of the skin that show redness or are discolored.”
This technique is used by makeup artist Lisa Eldridge and is even known as “the Eldridge technique.” It’s perfect for problem skin and, as Kyselica says, allows you to “wear your natural skin wherever possible.”
“Applying foundation this way looks really natural and fresh and is better for the skin,” she says.
2. Brushes
If you’ve spent a ton of money on a skincare regimen just to still experience pesky breakouts, then you might want to focus on your tools rather than your products.
If hair oil is leaving your hair more, well, oily than moisturized, you’re probably not applying it correctly. Pumping oil into your palm and raking it through your hair will only leave you with greasy streaks while the rest of your hair is still crying out for attention.
Instead, dispense a few drops into your hand and rub it between your palms to warm it up. Ensure your entire palm and fingers are evenly coated in oil. Next, lightly apply it to your mid-lengths and ends using a twisting motion.
Try not to apply the oil directly to your roots, as your scalp already produces its own oils.
Rather than raking the brush directly up, hold the brush against the lash roots and gently wiggle it upward. This helps to really coat your lashes in product and achieve maximum volume.
5. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is often touted as the miracle solution to all your problems. It can help you achieve silky-smooth shaved legs, moisturize your body, and remove even the thickest layer of eye makeup.
But before you go lathering it all over your face, you might want to do a patch test first. Why? Because coconut oil is super comedogenic. This means that if you use it as an oil cleanser or moisturizer, you might end up with major breakouts rather than the complexion of your dreams.
Coconut oil can also produce undesirable results as a hair mask, since it’s loaded with protein. If your hair is just dry rather than damaged, you should probably steer clear.
Everyone’s skin and hair is different. You might be better off using something like jojoba oil on your face and moisturizing olive oil as a hair mask.
6. Baking Soda
If you’ve ever used baking soda to clean your home, then you’ll know that it’s great at scrubbing away and lifting grease. As tempted as you might be to apply the same method to your face, just…don’t.
Baking soda is simply too harsh for your skin. It can really irritate it and strip away much-needed oils, throwing everything out of balance. No one needs an exfoliant that strong!
https://twitter.com/knee_chole/status/433079609387921408
The No ‘Poo Method has no doubt helped baking soda sales skyrocket worldwide, but there are concerns that it may be too drying to be used as a shampoo.
So does baking soda have any place in your beauty routine? Surprisingly, yes—it can actually be used to clean your makeup brushes!
7. Pore Strips
There’s nothing more disgustingly satisfying than using pore strips. Unfortunately, they’re not going to help your pores get any cleaner.
Those little bumps left on the strip aren’t dirt, but sebum, which your pores need. Sure, you may remove a few blackheads. But after you remove the sebum, your pores are waiting to be filled by whatever dirt happens to come in contact with them. This may lead to even more blackheads.
A better solution is to treat blackheads with these dermatologist-recommended methods. They will be much gentler on your skin and actually get results.
Using pore strips is kind of like squeezing a pimple. You really want to do it but you know it’s not good for you. Just be aware of the consequences!
8. Dry shampoo
Dry shampoo is basically a miracle product, helping to seriously freshen up your hair between washes. It works by soaking up the grease in your hair, mimicking the appearance of clean locks.
Many people apply dry shampoo in the morning before they leave the house. But the best time to apply it is actually before your hair looks like it needs it.
Applying dry shampoo before you go to bed on a between-washes day means you’ll wake up with much cleaner-looking hair. Similarly, apply it before a sweaty gym session rather than after.
It’s also important not to apply it too close to your roots. Hold the can a good few inches away from your scalp and spray sparingly. Otherwise, you might end up with obvious splotches on your hairline.
9. Brow Products
Whether you use a gel, a pencil, or a powder, technique is crucial to achieving a killer brow. If you literally try to fill them in like you’re attacking a coloring book, you’re bound to end up more Groucho Marx than Cara Delevingne.
Instead, use small, light strokes to draw on natural-looking hairs, focusing on the most sparse areas first.
10. Hairbrush
Brushing your hair shouldn’t be a painful experience. If it is, odds are you’re doing it wrong—and it might just be the cause of all those flyaway hairs.
First of all, never start brushing your hair from your roots. This can cause the bristles to snag on knots and cause breakage. Instead, hold your hair and gently brush from the ends, working your up to the top of your head as you untangle.
If you have curly hair, then your head might resemble more of a frizzy lion’s mane than Marcia Brady’s silky locks. Try brushing your hair only before you get in the shower to avoid breaking your curl pattern.
11. Bobby Pins
Here’s a surprising fact: Almost every single one of us is using bobby pins upside down.
Ever noticed how bobby pins have a bumpy side to them? That’s the side that’s supposed to face down in order to grip your hair. No wonder they always fall out!
12. Eyelash Curler
If you’re not using an eyelash curler, then you should seriously consider it. This nifty little tool can make you look more awake and wide-eyed and can perfectly complement the right mascara.
However, make sure you’re not curling your eyelashes at the wrong step of your beauty routine. Curl those lashes before mascara, not after. Otherwise, your lashes can get stuck to the clamps, pulling them right off your eyelid and leaving mascara all over your curler.
Oh, and since it comes in such close contact with your eyes, make sure to clean it regularly. Eye infections are not a great look.
13. Perfume
Many people believe that applying perfume to “pulse points,” such as the wrists or neck, can unlock the subtle notes in a perfume’s scent. Unfortunately, this is garbage science with no real merit.
As for rubbing your wrists together? It doesn’t exactly “bruise” those scent molecules, but it does produce heat, which can cause the perfume to evaporate faster. You’re probably not going to enjoy the smell quite as long as if you left it alone.
There are some lesser known but super effective places you can apply perfume instead—like your hair.
14. Heat Tools
Even if you apply a heat protectant beforehand, you may still be committing some major sins when it comes to using heat tools.
When it comes to blow drying or straightening you hair, maximum heat does not equal maximum style. Dial down that temperature and save your hair the damage.
According to Kyselica, women have been curling their hair for eons. But they didn’t always use heat.
“Curly hair has been popular all throughout history,” she says. “And since curling irons weren’t that easy to use for a long time—they were literally irons, which you’d heat in the fire or over a stove, eek!—ladies resorted to overnight curling methods.”
Whether you’re looking to achieve vintage pin curls or the more frizz-tastic 18th-century paper curls, you’d be surprised at what you can achieve without the use of heat tools.
“The key is to start with damp hair and a setting product,” says Kyselica. “Separate the hair into even sections, twist each section into a curl and secure it according to the method you’re using. Then allow your hair to dry and set overnight.”
The result? Beautiful curls with no damage whatsoever. Trust me: your ends will thank you.
“Overnight curling is much better for the hair than heat styling, and often tends to last longer as well,” she says. “Definitely a lost treasure, if you ask me!”
15. Conditioner
Unless you’re following the Curly Girl Method and co-washing, you should never apply conditioner to your roots. Your scalp probably produces enough oil, and adding more may leave you with greasy hair.
Focus on the mid-lengths and ends when applying conditioner. Make sure to leave it in for a couple of minutes before rinsing it out so it can really work its magic on your hair.
The best part about washing your hair this way? Your hair stays much cleaner for longer. You’re welcome.
With the average person walking nearly 115,000 miles in [their] lifetime … our feet take significant physical abuse.
Earlier this week, I was talking to a few friends about our feet. It’s admittedly a weird topic to get into with friends, but hear me out.
It started with talk of shoe shopping and slowly digressed into complaints about foot pain, toenail problems, visits with the podiatrist. It was kind of funny—all of this time, I’ve assumed that experiencing foot pain wasn’t typical, that my endless search for comfortable and stylish shoes was just me, with my fallen arches and big feet, but this conversation revealed otherwise.
I had one friend who was constantly battling athlete’s foot on her preschooler’s little feet, while another was having a really hard time with arch pain while running. Another had an entire toenail removed after months of fighting with an ingrown nail. I, on the other hand, was nursing a case of plantar fasciitis.
What I realized was that most of these women had foot problems and were actually dealing with them. I, on the other hand, had been ignoring my foot pain for years—outside of looking for better shoes.
It’s pretty common to struggle with foot problems, Mark Hinkes, doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), tells me.
“With the average person walking nearly 115,000 miles in [their] lifetime … our feet take significant physical abuse,” he says. “It’s no wonder people suffer from a wide range of problems,” which can include bone, soft tissue, skin, and nail deformities.
Many people dealing with foot pain, dermatological problems on their feet, or issues with the way they walk can find a link between their foot problems and the foot health habits they employ, according to Hinkes.
Yet foot care simply isn’t a priority for some. Are you guilty of these bad foot health habits?
Baring it All
There’s nothing wrong with going barefoot from time to time (more on that later), especially if the skin on your feet is intact. However, there is one common habit that everyone should avoid, according to Edgard Nau, MD, DPM, and that’s going sockless while wearing shoes.
“The major concern is developing a fungal infection,” explains Nau, who owns Manhattan Home Podiatric. “The shoes [are] the perfect environment for fungi. It’s dark, it’s warm, and it’s moist.”
So to avoid the growth of foot fungus, for some it’s as simple as making sure you’re wearing socks.
Improper Trimming
Ingrown toenails can be incredibly painful and might earn you a house call from Dr. Nau. The next time you set out to do a little nail trimming, make sure you are careful not to set yourself up for nail problems in the future.
If your feet and nails are healthy, nails should be cut straight across, according to Nau—avoid cutting into the corner to avoid ingrown nails. The rules might be different if you have problems with your feet, though, such as compromised feeling in your feet or vascular compromise caused by chronic health conditions.
Being Unsupportive
Many people have come to expect that they will experience foot pain after enough time standing or walking. While some level of foot pain may be unavoidable for certain individuals, the right amount of support can significantly improve overall foot health. Take a look at the video below to learn more about the dos and don’ts of footwear.
Do-it-Yourself Foot Care
Those do-it-yourself corn removal kits at your local drugstore might be tempting, but they’re actually not the solution to your foot problems. While there is nothing particularly harmful about those kits, they only address the symptom, according to Nau.
A habit that is bad for foot health is ‘bathroom surgery,’ where people often attempt to treat their own foot problems.
“I’d rather you figure out why you’re getting the corn in the first place,” says Nau, referring back to his comments about poorly fitting shoes.
Corns are caused by ill-fitting shoes. They develop because the body is trying to protect the joint underneath when there is too much pressure on the foot.
And, although corn-removal kits are mostly harmless, individuals with vascular or neurological compromise to their feet should avoid them.
“What happens is folks leave them on longer than they should and the acid stays on there and actually causes an ulcer,” Nau explains. “If you’re diabetic, those are very dangerous.”
In general, trying to deal with foot problems on your own is a dangerous habit, says Hinkes.
“A habit that is bad for foot health is ‘bathroom surgery,’ where people often attempt to treat their own foot problems,” warns Hinkes. “This is a dangerous practice because they may not have the correct instrument for the problem and end up using what they have: a scissors, razor blade or tweezers. The use of these non-sterile, inappropriate instruments combined with poor lighting, bad vision, and faulty eye-motor coordination is a recipe for a foot health disaster.”
So next time you’re faced with, say, an ingrown toenail, let the professionals do the doctoring.
Forgetting the Fungus
If you you have a problem with fungus, we have good news! There is plenty you can do to prevent it, according to Nau. Specifically, he suggests wearing socks made from natural fibers, avoiding wearing the same socks for two days in a row, and occasionally treating your shoes with an over-the-counter anti-fungal powder.
In any case, don’t ignore it. If you catch it early, you can prevent it from spreading.
“If you see any kind of changes in the color of your nails, like white streaks or white spots, get it checked out,” he advises. “ If you can prevent one nail unit being infected to the extent that the actual nail root is growing out fungus, you can prevent the whole foot from being infected.”
Always Wearing Shoes
Going sockless might be a problem for your feet, but don’t be nervous about ditching your shoes and socks altogether. There is actually some benefit to going without shoes from time to time, especially outdoors.
“It’s good to run in the sand barefoot,” encourages Nau. “It’s good exercise for the deep muscles in your foot.”
Additionally, walking barefoot on the ground is natural. The transference of body weight when our bare feet hit the ground outdoors exposes our bodies to the least amount of stress while walking, according to The Washington Post.
When it comes to fear of picking up disease, the risk is minimal, according to The Washington Post. Diseases spread more often by hand than by foot, anyway, especially if there are no cuts on on our feet.
Not Taking Shoe Clues
Another fascinating fact about feet is that your shoes might be giving you clues about underlying problems with how you walk. Shoes wear over time—that’s only natural—but certain patterns of wearing might be a signal of a larger issues.
“It’s normal for the outside part of the heel to wear down,” says Nau in reference to running shoes. “If you’re noticing wear in the center or the inside part [of your heel], you want to get that checked out, because you’re not striking the ground normally.”
If you’re not noticing any strange wear on your shoes, you should follow a few basic guidelines for replacing running shoes. Avid runners should replace their shoes every six months; Less active individuals should still replace them once a year. Even if they still look great on the outside, it’s important to replace them because the interior material will break down, according to Nau.
About Amputation
For individuals with diabetes, foot care simply isn’t optional. Taking care of your feet and watching for signs that there is something bigger going on is essential to protecting your health.
Of the 185,000 limb amputations in the United States each year, 54 percent are caused by vascular diseases like diabetes. In 2010, 73,000 diabetic American over the age of 20 had amputations, according toHealthline.
“… and up to 85 percent of [diabetes related] amputations are preventable,” Hinkes says. And he’s right, according to a paper in the Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders.
If you have diabetes, protecting yourself from serious foot problems is as simple as scheduling a yearly check up. Specifically, Hinkes suggests diabetic patients make sure they have a Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Health Screening with a podiatrist every single year. This test should include a monofilament test, a simple test that checks the foot for loss of sensation that would indicate neuropathy in the foot.
Del the Funky Homosapien rapped it best: “It’s important to practice good hygiene/At least if you wanna run with my team.”
Well, we do want to run with Del’s team, and besides, smelling nice is always a plus. But think of hygiene more as a happy medium than an all-out blitz. It is possible to overdo it.
In fact, sometimes, in the name of health, we innocently do more harm to our bodies than good. From drying your hands to washing your dishes and cleaning your ears, here are 10 hygiene practices you’re better off skipping. Don’t worry; you’ll still be able to run with Del.
1. Relying on Too Much Hot Air
Ah, the old and bitter controversy: hand towels versus air dryers. Well, debate no further. An authority no less illustrious than the Mayo Clinic points to research that shows paper towels are better than electric hand dryers, at least in terms of scraping away bacteria.
By nature, not only do electric hand dryers fail to “wipe off” the bacteria remaining on your hands, but they may also spread it to the entire room, essentially aerosolizing the bugs. Not to mention, hand dryers are louder and often less effective, and they can leave your skin chapped and dry. Plus, if you’re concerned about the environment, know that standard warm air dryers use a lot of power and can be resource-intensive to install. Summary:Hand towels are often more effective at fighting germs. Use fewer towels to reduce your ecological footprint.
2. Using This Old Excuse to Get Out of Your Turn Doing Dishes
Dishes are everyone’s least favorite chore—they’re gross, and they take forever. So it’s no surprise that people often “let them soak” to avoid the dirty work. It turns out, though, that there’s some very scary things that make a home inside that dirty sink. According to research compiled by the University of Arizona, somewhere between 50 and 80 percent of bugs that lead to food-borne illnesses are bred right at home.
And where exactly in the home do you think these pathogens are breeding? The second-worst offender in microbiologist Charles Gerba’s research, after the kitchen sponge, is the kitchen sink. It has more bacteria than your toilet, according to Gerba. (“That’s why your dog likes to drink out of the toilet,” he jokes.) Summary: Wash dishes as soon as possible with hot water and soap.
3. Waging All-Out War on Microbes
Good old-fashioned hand-washing is still the best way to fight the spread of germs, but should you really choose antibacterial soaps designed to nuke all microorganisms, no matter what? Triclosan, a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent used in soap, mouthwash, and even deodorant, was examined in a study in Clinical Infectious Diseases.
According to study authors, this sanitizing agent is “no more effective than plain soap at preventing infectious illness symptoms and reducing bacterial levels on the hands,” and its potential to kill even healthy bugs may be associated with the “emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.”
The FDA seems to have agreed with the study’s conclusions, as the administration recently restricted triclosan’s use in certain products. Summary: When in doubt, use plain soap every time to win the fight against germs.
4. Skipping the Dirt
According to researchers at Cornell University, a little dirt in your diet is a good thing. Maybe you shouldn’t wash your garden vegetables so scrupulously.
They say that geophagy, or the consumption of soil, has existed in humans for millennia—and it may actually help protect the stomach against pathogens, toxins, and parasites.
The data shows that geophagy shows up most commonly in women in the early stages of pregnancy and in pre-adolescent children. Both categories of people are especially sensitive to parasites and pathogens, according to the study’s authors. A little dirt goes a long way. Summary: Don’t fear a bit of dirt on your veggies—that mud pie you ate as a child might have been medicinal.
5. Over-Reliance on the Fridge
It goes without saying that some foods (such as meat) need to be refrigerated. But according to a study published in the Journal ofPhysiological Anthropology, purposefully allowing other foods like fruits and vegetables to be exposed to warm air (thereby slightly fermenting them) can actually cultivate your own homemade and delicious probiotics!
Long before the invention of refrigeration (and the concept of hygiene), milk, bread starter, and vegetables were often fermented before eating. The researchers found that eating slightly fermented foods actually boosts your immune system and increases the nutrient content of the food. Who doesn’t love sourdough? Summary: Keep your fruit and veggies in a bowl on the kitchen counter for a little probiotic boost in your diet.
6. Refusing to Share
Odds are, if you and a pair of friends want to share an oversized dessert at your favorite restaurant, you’ll ask for three spoons with the dish. You might assume using separate spoons is healthier than sharing. Not necessarily, say researchers. Encouraging the spread of healthy bacteria in our guts is something we need to do more of, the researchers say. Sharing saliva among healthy friends and family members—and thus introducing their microbes into your own microbiome—may actually help your immune system. Not only does sharing cut down on calories, then, but it also builds up the body’s supply of good bugs.
It’s important to note, though, that you really don’t want to share food or drinks with people who are actively sick. That’s especially true of drinks, Sunny Jung of Virginia Tech explained to Popular Science. No matter how careful you may be, there’s always some level of backwash left in the cup after a sip. Yuck. Summary: Share food and drinks with healthy friends and family to boost your immunity.
7. Relaxing in the Shower
There’s nothing like a long hot shower, especially first thing in the morning. It wakes you up and leaves you feeling fresh and ready to start the day. But is it good for your skin?
According to Alan J. Parks, MD, founder of DermWarehouse, the answer is, sadly, not so much. Hot showers strip protective oils from your skin, so you should always keep them short as you can stand, Parks suggests.
The soap you use is important, too. “Many soaps will strip your skin of natural oils and cause your skin to dry out,” Parks says. Try to use gentle soaps, like those made for sensitive skin, and make sure to rinse every last bit of lather from your body before [linkbuilder id=”3589″ text=”getting out of the shower”].
Here’s another shocker: Hot showers are actually most beneficial at night, as part of your bedtime routine. The cooling process that begins after stepping out of a hot shower can create an easier transition to sleep—potentially leading to a more restful night. A temperature drop triggers your body to rest because it slows down the body’s metabolic activities, like digestion, breathing, and heart rate. Summary: Keep hot showers as short as possible, and take them at night to help you sleep.
8. Abusing the Q-Tip
It’s too bad earwax is brown and sticky. Many people falsely assumed that it’s dirty and needs to be cleaned. Earwax (scientifically named cerumen) is a combination of sebum (oils), secretions from glands in the outer ear canal, and skin cells. It’s all good stuff, people.
Like many processes in the body, earwax production is a self-cleaning, protective mechanism that you shouldn’t interfere with in most cases. Even worse, sticking objects in your ear can damage your eardrum and lead to hearing loss.
Occasionally, earwax gets impacted and messes with your hearing. Even in this case, though, you shouldn’t try to clear the blockage yourself. Instead, visit a doctor to remove it. Experts suggest that if you absolutely must try something at home, just put a drop of mineral oil in your ear every day for a few days. That can loosen built-up earwax. Once the wax reaches peak-gooeyness, squirt clean water gently into the ear canal and wipe with a fresh towel; that should do the trick. Summary: Don’t stick things in your ear. Ever. Unless earwax is impeding your hearing, leave it there.
9. Developing a Preoccupation With Exfoliation
You need to exfoliate to remove a layer of unpleasant skin cells, exposing the beauty beneath, right? Maybe so, but it’s a mistake to treat your skin like a plank that needs sanding. There’s no good reason for most of us to exfoliate every day.
Just like with hot showers, this is an issue of preserving the oils that protect the skin. Even worse, you can actually damage the skin if you don’t give those shiny new layers time to grow in.
So how often should you exfoliate? Dermatologists like to point out that everyone is different, and that your skin will let you know if you’re over-exfoliating. Unfortunately, it can only do that by getting all red and painful, so it might be best to err on the side of caution.
The consensus among dermatologists, when pressed, seems to be that you shouldn’t exfoliate more than two or three times a week. Summary:Do exfoliate. Do not do it every day. And don’t try to get a straight answer out of a dermatologist.
10. Fearing Greasy Hair
Everyone’s hair is a little different—there’s a wide range of types, from the brittle and dry to the over-oily. But all of us could probably stand to go easier on the shampoo.
The oil that the hair naturally produces, called sebum, is actually good for your hair and your skin, as it forms a protective layer and locks moisture in.
Unfortunately, shampoos don’t discriminate between healthy oils and gunk like dirt, sweat, and product residue. Shampoo strips away the good and the bad, potentially leaving your hair drier and more vulnerable to damage.
Now, it’s true that some people need to wash their hair daily. People with extremely fine or oily hair, or who live in very humid climates, or who sweat profusely, might consider shampooing daily with a mild moisturizing shampoo. But that’s not most of us. Summary: Go as long as you can between shampooing your hair, even if that means more ponytail days.
The point of all this is not that you should stop taking care of yourself entirely, of course. Fail to heed Del the rapper’s warnings and you know the result: “You’ll be funky.”
