Triathlete Nicole Loher

This week’s Healthy Her Way feature is someone I’ve followed for years, so I mean it when I say I really am excited to introduce her. When the HealthyWay team discussed women in wellness we wanted to highlight, triathlete Nicole Loher immediately came to mind.
I started following Nicole on Tumblr (yes, Tumblr!) in 2011 or 2012 when she mostly posted outfit pics, because that is what people did on Tumblr in 2011 or 2012. After a while, I stopped using Tumblr and for a few years I didn’t think about the many women I followed on that platform. Fast forward a few years to when a suggested account popped up on my Instagram feed: Nicole Loher!
Now, Nicole—who moved to New York for college and ended up working for companies like Jeffrey Campbell, Nanette Lepore, and NARS—does triathlons (and trains three hours a day to prepare for them), teaches at New York University, is an ambassador for adidas, and holds down an awesome gig as the global digital editor at Christian Louboutin. To say I’m impressed is an understatement, especially because sometimes I need a nap even if I’ve slept in past 9.
Her busy schedule—which starts every day with hip shakes in a mirror at 4:30 a.m.—is a true testament to women’s incredible ability to multitask and get shit done. She trains three hours a day, full-time job and all, which kind of makes her seem like Superwoman. Incredible accomplishments aside, though, she’s admitted that her quest to be the best has had effects on her mental health. In fact, her biggest goal for 2018 is to be kinder to herself (which is probably something we should all work on).
Seeing someone’s struggles makes seeing their highs even more fun. I’ll admit it: Even though I don’t know Nicole personally, when she posted (what may be the cutest photos ever) about her engagement earlier this year, I definitely teared up. Getting those peeks into another person’s life is the most interesting part of social media for me. And thanks to her “go get ’em girl” captions and willingness to open up about things like her social anxiety, her journey to getting fit, and the state of the “fitfluencer” industry, it’s easy to get a picture of who this woman is and how she approaches wellness. Reading real advice, like “what works for me may not work for you,” from a powerhouse athlete is refreshing.
In an age of Photoshopped yoga poses and cult fave workout classes, I’m appreciative of women like Nicole who are out here keeping it real, reminding us that we’re all on a journey and we all have to work to keep going—even triathletes.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

I wake up at 4:30 a.m. every day. Before heading to the gym at 5:20 a.m., I catch up on personal emails and how the markets performed the day prior—I’m very into personal finance. I head to the gym for an hour to lift weights before heading into work at 8 a.m. From there, I head back to the gym at 6 p.m. to catch an evening spin class, hot yoga session, or run and stretch. From there, I go home to rest up and spend time with my fiancé before starting over again.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

I run a lot—part is to keep myself healthy, something that’s very important to me, but a lot of times it’s just to have time to myself to think. I also love a good bubble bath with lavender Epsom salt, face mask, a cup of tea, and a good book.

How do you stay inspired?

My mom and dad. They’re both constantly innovating to make everything around them better and better. It’s wild.

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

I’m loving Dermovia vegan, paraben-, cruelty-, chemical-free face masks, cocokind’s new Golden Elixir, [and] Rishi Turmeric Ginger Tea. I found the face mask at a store in my hometown that I’m obsessed with called Cultivated, and the Rishi tea is a recent discovery thanks to my meditation studio, MNDFL, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

What are your favorite apps?

On heavy rotation: VSCO and Snapseed for photo editing, Insight Timer for pre-bed meditation, iBooks because I’m never not reading, adidas All Day to keep me endlessly inspired with health, and Spitfire to guide my lifting routines.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

@chels is an old internet pal of mine (who I actually ran into randomly in the middle of a street in SoHo recently)—she’s an extremely talented graphic designer and has an eye for aesthetic unlike anyone else in our age bracket. She’s also really pretty (girl crush). And I really look up to @jessiezapo, founder of @girlsrunnyc. She has been the number one inspiration for me within the health and wellness realm. She’s so down to earth and warm and is always looking to be better. I also admire @sarah_levey, founder of Y7 yoga studio. She is one of the most driven, badass women I’ve ever known.

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

I love jackfruit. I only had it for the first time when I visited Sri Lanka in January. It’s a fruit that’s a species of the bread family—think fig, mulberry—and native to southwest India. It’s super sweet, and you eat it like a date.

“Too aggressive in the cuddle department, spends way too much time watching Dateline when home, and will eat a whole bowl of steamed broccoli with coconut aminos for dinner in under five minutes while wearing no pants.” —My cat, Lucy

What superpower would you like to have?

Morgan Haley Of The Southern Yogi

Have you ever seen a photo or video of someone on social media and instantly known they were a kind-hearted human? That was my gut reaction as I started learning more about Morgan “Mo” Haley, known to many as The Southern Yogi.
It’s easy to get lost on Morgan’s Instagram feed, as her personal flow videos show a level of strength, control, and self-awareness that is awe inspiring. She wasn’t always a graceful yogi, though. Morgan was actually a competitive swimmer for 10 years before getting a degree in vascular ultrasound. Fun fact: She is also one of seven children.
Soon after completing her degree, Morgan realized that establishing a career in vascular ultrasound wasn’t what she wanted to do with her life. She pivoted and wound up working as a barista at Starbucks for six years to afford herself more flexibility in her schedule. This enabled Morgan to devote more time to finding herself and pursuing the true passions that ignited the flame inside her. It was in 2014 that she discovered yoga and downloaded the Yoga Studio app, which set her universe in motion.
The more Morgan learned about the practice of yoga, the more she realized the value of listening to her body and using her mind and focused strength to achieve difficult handstands and various arm balances. It was her love for these inversions that taught Morgan the importance of core strength in one’s yoga practice. She developed her own technique, started sharing her tips and tricks, and her popular ab’asana guides were born. Morgan thoughtfully curated these ebook guides to help others build a solid foundation of core strength to assist with their yoga practice (getting great abs in the process is an added bonus).   
In just a few short years, this Kentucky girl has become certified in 200 CYT and Standing Acrobatics while growing her social following from 200 to over 500k. Though this success has led to a busy schedule filled with travel, social media scrutiny from strangers, and the other joys and heartaches that come with being an influencer and yoga instructor, Morgan takes it all in stride and welcomes the change.
She views travel as a blessing and realizes that she will not always be able to please every human on social media. She’s shared these wise words about that topic on Instagram: “Try to focus on all the epic humans you have following you and not the small percentage that will never understand.” 
Although yoga is a large part of her life, her practice is just one of the many reasons we are inspired by Morgan. In a blog post that particularly resonated with us, she shared one of the hardest things she’s ever done in her life: going through a divorce after being with her partner for eight years and married for five. Morgan is especially raw in this blog post, sharing the truth about the depression she experienced during this difficult time despite knowing she was listening to her heart.
Fortunately, Morgan began attending therapy and also had a tight crew of family and friends to support her (as well as her sweet husky–coyote hybrid, Kali, for those extra snuggles). We’re thankful Morgan chose to share her story, because it can truly help others who are struggling with a similar situation and may be feeling broken, unsure, guilty, or any of the other challenging emotions divorce can bring.
Morgan radiates light from the inside out and it’s clear that she is genuine about her mission to share the joy she’s found in her personal yoga practice with others. There’s no denying that her life has changed since her competitive swimming days, and she’s perfectly fine with that, stating, “I sure hope that I’m not the same person I was 2, 5, 10, and even 15 years ago. I hope I’m not that same person in 5 years from now. I hope I’ve lived hundreds of different lives by the time I’m old and grey.”
As a beginner yogi myself (and someone who often feels lost in her own life!), it’s inspiring to see Morgan’s progress knowing that her yoga journey began in 2014. This makes me hopeful that with enough focus, I too can achieve a new level of fluidity and grace—and hopefully find a new connection with myself in the process. I also know many others feel the exact same way.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

The very first thing I do when I wake up is brush my teeth. Even if it’s before I’ve eaten breakfast. I’m such a weirdo about oral hygiene, but my teeth and tongue have to feel clean. After that I put the kettle on and make myself a cup of black breakfast tea with a splash of milk. I usually make some style of eggs for breakfast. Afterwards I answer emails and do some work while I take my pup to the park and let her run around.
My yoga practice is mid-morning before lunch. I have my own personal sweat sesh and then film or take photos for IG. The afternoon consists of more meetings/phone calls or interviews and a trip to the gym to get my HIIT workout or lift in. The nighttimes are pretty chill, and my partner and I cook dinner together and end up watching Netflix or a movie before heading to bed.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

Obviously physical activity is huge for me. No matter what day it is, I try to do something active, whether it’s a walk with my dog or practicing handstands for an hour. Different days call for different activities depending on how my body feels. I also love the mental stimulation of reading a good self-help book. Right now I’m working on The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery. I think it’s always important to continue learning about yourself through every season of life. I’m also not mad about a good bath bomb and a face mask.

How do you stay inspired?

Honestly, on my days I’m not feeling so motivated, I just remember that the sole fact of taking another breath and being alive is inspiring. I also find going out into nature away from the noise and the crowds calms my soul and refuels my creativity tank.

Loving Lately…

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

Dessert tea by Tazo and Bigelow. I can’t travel without buying Salted Caramel Blend and my Butterscotch Blondie Blend. It curbs my sweet tooth. I also love Farsali Volcanic Elixir that I apply on my face every night before I go to bed. So much yummy skin hydration.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

I always stalk @freedivegirl for her graceful, powerful movements and words of wisdom. I also love following @bo_xox for all the fitness and acrobatics inspiration. That girl is insanely strong!

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

If I’m in a salty mood I love to grab an Epic Bar. My favorite flavor is Chicken Sriracha. If I have a sweet tooth I’ll normally go for a honeycrisp apple and some almond butter.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Currently reading Daring Greatly by Brené Brown and The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile. Currently watching Orange Is the New Black…guilty pleasure. Currently listening to loads of Flume and Odesza.

If your pet could talk, how would they describe you?

My dog Kali: Morgan is the best friend I’ve ever known. My two cats Kovu and Bagheera: Morgan is the best peasant who’s ever walked through our kingdom.

What superpower would you like to have?

Definitely teleportation with all of my things. I’d never have to fly on a plane again!

What are you really great at (that might embarrass you to admit)?

I’m really great at not trying on clothes when I buy them, hating them once I get home, and then just giving them away because I get annoyed at returning things.

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

Oh my goodness—why is this the hardest question? I think a few years ago when I was leaving an eight-year relationship and wasn’t sure how to make it through another day, my mom told me to stop focusing on days—on the future. Start focusing on seconds and minutes. What do you need to do to get you through the next 10 seconds? Take some breaths. Recenter yourself. I know it sounds corny, but there is no fear or anxiety in the present. So if you ever start to get too caught up in days or weeks or months, bring yourself back to the present moment.

Minna Lee Of Living Minnaly

Ten years ago, when Minna Lee was just 17 years old, she found herself hanging up her skates for the final time after a decade of competitive figure skating. Not knowing what life had in store for her next, Minna moved away from home to attend New York University. She found herself in her dream city and had her sights set on a career in entertainment. The universe had other plans, however, and as she began to find her place in the Big Apple, Minna realized that sharing her personal health and self-care experiences had the potential to help others.
Now, at 27, Minna is a certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, creator of the blog Living Minnaly, and founder of Live24k—a golden “mylk”–centric supplement line—all while continuing to thrive in her favorite city, NYC. Minna puts it best: She is truly a “Jill of all trades.”
Though her résumé is already quite impressive, she’s not stopping yet. Minna is constantly pursuing continuing education opportunities to add to her perspective on all things wellness-related so that she can empower and support her clients.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

I know this is cliché for an entrepreneur to say, but no single day is alike. The general skeleton of my day will look similar to this: Wake up at 5 or 5:30 a.m., do my morning routine (glass of lemon water, oil pull, brew coffee or tea, and wash my face), and head off to train my morning clients. After that I’ll either head home to do work or stay in the city for meetings and work out of a coffee shop for a bit.
Usually more meetings and phone calls will fill the midday times, then I head back home to fulfill Live 24k shipments and get more work done at home. I’ll then head to my remaining training clients for the day, likely then a blogging event, and then head home. That’s when the brunt of my startup work for Live 24k begins, honestly! Then dinner, workout, getting stuff ready for the next day, and then my nightly routine.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

For the easy daily self-care, I am big on nightly routines and winding down properly. No phones, just my skincare routine, getting my sleep environment set up by diffusing my essential oils, changing into cozy clothes, burning a little palo santo, and zenning out.
I define self-care as anything that replenishes your mind and soul—it might be baths and massages for one person, it might be going on a walk or working out, it might be therapy or indulging in a hobby without distractions.

How do you stay inspired?

By focusing on the work. I find that if you focus on the actual work and the process of doing it all, it’s easier to reinvigorate yourself. I also am very aware of my emotional and mental currency—by that I mean I have limited resources of these things, so I make sure to only surround myself by things that help replenish those currencies more than they drain them. This extends to people, environments, working relationships, and social ones!

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

I’m addicted to all of Saje’s essential oils—I diffuse and topically use them. I fell in love with Tata Harper’s new clarifying foaming cleanser and the clarifying mask recently. Then Kari Gran is a new discovery of mine—love her cleansing oil for a double cleansing night, and her lip whips are to die for.

What are your favorite apps?

To be honest, my phone is all work stuff! I love me some VSCO, Snapseed, and obviously Instagram for media stuff. A random app I love to use is Waterlogged to track my water intake since I’m intrinsically so awful about it.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

This is almost a mean question because there are too many I love! I only follow accounts that truly inspire me, whether it be for their photos or their voice. I love my friends @sammyyeason for her realness (and her ridiculously cute kid), @kait.hurley for her beautiful spirit and different way of explaining thoughts that I share, @juliannavezza for her beautiful travel photography, @foodbymars for being a fellow Hashi’s warrior and awesome source of science-based nutritional advice, @emilyschuman for girlbossing, @monicawangphoto for interior photography, @em_henderson I just want to be my best friend…gosh I could go on and on!

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

I’m not the biggest snacker, but I can easily house an inordinate amount of berries any time. Or honestly one of my Live 24k Golden Fuel lattes is welcome at any time of the day!

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Reading: On Romantic Love by Berit Brogaard and Braving the Wilderness by Brené Brown. Watching: This Is Us and I’m a sucker for The Bachelor. Listening to: anything Spotify tells me to.

Minna IRL

What superpower would you like to have?

To fly. Not only do I physically love the feeling of flying through the air in any way: It would allow me to travel the world so much more easily!

Would you rather explore space or the ocean? Why?

Space honestly scares me because I think I saw too many weird alien movies as a kid. I would need to be a better swimmer, but I think the ocean is fascinating. There are so many creatures that exist out there that we don’t even know of yet—and I sincerely hope we do a better job at preserving it so that future generations will be able to discover those things.

What’s your coffee order?

For a treat, it’s an oat milk cappuccino (hot or iced depending on my mood) but a black pour over for everyday.

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

Do whatever you truly want to do as long as you don’t hurt anybody in the process—because even if you do make mistakes, you will find a way to move forward. I tend to be very anxious and worry a lot about the future, but I’m so grateful to my mom for helping ingrain this in my head. It’s helped me tackle fear of the unknown and take more leaps of faith than I otherwise would have.

Jess Jones And Wendy Lopez Of Food Heaven Made Easy

Name a more dynamic duo than Jessica “Jess” Jones and Wendy Lopez of Food Heaven Made Easy. Having a hard time? We don’t blame you. Despite living on different sides of the country—Jess currently resides in California while Wendy lives in New York—these intelligent foodies are two peas in a pod.
Jess and Wendy truly embody what Healthy Her Way represents, as one of their main missions is to make healthy, plant-based eating and nutritional resources accessible and affordable for all. As registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators, Jess and Wendy understand how food can be used not only to nourish the body but also to help manage chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes.
Jess and Wendy were introduced by a mutual friend back in 2009 and later wound up working together at local farmers markets, including one in the Bronx, which is when they realized their shared love for food and nutrition education. The two started co-teaching in lower income areas, sharing their insights on vegetarianism and providing people with accessible resources for healthier living.
One of Jess and Wendy’s big initiatives involved sharing vegetarian recipes that didn’t require a lot of expensive or hard-to-find ingredients. Ultimately their colorful, tasty dishes are proof that healthy eating isn’t off limits to individuals and families with lower incomes. Vegetarian cooking can be accessible to everyone (even flexitarians and meat eaters—as they point out on their website!) and it doesn’t have to be a time-consuming chore or financial burden.
The success of their initial efforts prompted Jess and Wendy to create original cooking videos, which eventually inspired their recipe-centric website and The Food Heaven Show.
Jess and Wendy shine in so many ways, but their podcast really resonated with us. It’s instantly apparent that these women have a genuine, supportive friendship and aim to make a real difference in this world.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

Jess: Every day is different—and let’s be honest, some days I don’t even put pants on—but I usually wake up around 6:45 a.m. and then drink two glasses of water. I always like to take my vitamins and probiotics in the morning before I forget. I also like to workout in the a.m. because my motivation declines as the day goes on. I try to either go for a walk, ride my bike, lift weights, or go rock climbing. After working out, I shower up and then get to work. As a dietitian, I counsel patients two to three days per week. I focus on general wellness, plant-based eating, chronic disease management, and intuitive eating. When I’m not working with patients, I create content for my online nutrition podcast and platform, Food Heaven Made Easy. I make sure to always take a break mid-day before lunch, and I like to eat dinner by 6 p.m.   
Wendy: I typically start off the day by reading a daily meditation or affirmation passage from Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff or 365 Daily Meditations. Then I drink a couple cups of water throughout the morning while getting ready and prepping breakfast. I rotate between a couple of eggs with toast or fruit or a filling green smoothie. Then it’s either working from home on Food Heaven projects or going into the clinic to provide nutrition counseling for patients. I usually pack my meals most days when working at the clinic and always have snacks on hand (usually fruits or mixed nuts). I try to take some kind of dance or fitness class a few times a week or go out for walks during my lunch breaks. Anything I can do to get some movement in! After that, it’s back home to whip up a quick and easy dinner (usually beans, tortillas, vegetables, and cheese, grilled into quesadillas). My wind-down includes seltzer water, Netflix, and a warm blanket, and then it’s off to sleep.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

Jess: My favorite way to practice self-care is getting at least eight hours of sleep per night! I don’t drink coffee, so I have to really rely on my sleep to get me through the day. I also try to have balance and flexibility with eating. I find that when I give myself permission to eat anything, my body naturally craves the balance between nourishing foods and fun foods. I work with my patients to help them find this balance too.
Wendy: I love laying on my couch in silence and doing absolutely nothing. I also love taking walks in nature or exploring my city when the weather is warm. Another more indulgent form of self-care I really love is eating at new restaurants!

How do you stay inspired?

Jess: For inspo, I love to travel and listen to podcasts. I can listen to up to 10 podcast episodes in a week, and I always love hearing other people’s stories or learning about a new topic or idea. Pinterest is also a big inspiration station for me. I’m a big DIY-er and you can literally find info about ev-er-y-thang.
Wendy: By connecting with my community, which is filled with so many creative, motivated, and passionate people. I make it a priority to spend quality time with my loved ones and also make time to create new connections with people who are passionate about whatever work it is that they do.

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

Jess: Does jojoba oil count? I’ve been using it for a couple years and it’s magic. I don’t use anything on my skin but this…I even wash my face with it.

What are your favorite apps?

Jess: Marco Polo…hands down my absolute fav. It’s like FaceTime for friends and fam but it saves all of your videos.

Jess: @chocolateforbasil and @healthfullyeverafter. I absolutely love these two sites because they focus on healthy indulgences and really bring out the art and beauty of food.

What’s your go-to healthy snack?

Jess: This is always changing, but recently it’s been pistachios and tangerines. My general snack formula is nuts + [insert whatever fruit is in season]. I also like toast with peanut butter.

Jess: I’m reading Body Kindness by Rebecca Scritchfield, watching Married at First Sight, and listening to Jorja Smith.

Jess: Parallel parking. I’m actually the best at it.

Jess: The ocean. I went scuba diving off the coast of Mexico and it was legit heaven on earth.

Wendy: I go with tea because caffeine literally makes me bounce off the walls.

Jess: Don’t let a slip become a fall.

CrossFit Games Athlete Jessica Griffith

Imagine being a registered nurse working 12-hour shifts at a busy trauma center located in the Midwest. Now imagine training for more than 20 hours a week to be one of just 40 women in the world to qualify for the CrossFit Games. Combine the two and your head is probably spinning as you ask yourself Where am I going to find the time and energy to devote to my training after working all day? Welcome to the life of this week’s Healthy Her Way feature, Jessica Griffith.  
Although Jessica’s Instagram is a testament to her physical strength—which can make her seem intimidating at first glance—she’s anything but. Whether it’s her first interaction with you or she’s known you for years, Jessica approaches everyone the same way—with a genuine smile and a positive attitude. She’s the type of person you want to be best friends with immediately.
Jessica’s nursing career and CrossFit success didn’t arrive overnight, though. She’s spent nearly five years tirelessly chasing her goals while encouraging and advising others along the way as a Barbell Medicine Nutrition Consultant. Finding balance between these two worlds isn’t always easy, but Jessica is committed to her schedule and to always viewing the glass of life as half full.
Jessica’s determination and grit are undeniable, but one of her qualities that we admire most is her optimism. When she’s feeling overwhelmed, Jessica likes to reframe situations that seem large and cumbersome and break them down into smaller challenges so that she can take things one step at a time, remaining calm and collected under pressure.
Once Jessica sets her mind on something—whether it be a snatch goal, staying more hydrated throughout the day, or a finding a new way to help others—that’s it. She knows that making excuses will never help her grow into the best version of herself. To reinforce this positive mindset, Jessica makes a point of surrounding herself with people she admires who have similar goals. Jessica enjoys having a tribe of motivational people around her who can pick her up when she’s having an off day and who she can do the same for in return: something we should all aim for, regardless of our aspirations!

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

My daily routine consists of a slow, peaceful morning with coffee, tea, eggs, Brussels sprouts, Kashi cereal, and blueberries. Yum! I usually answer some emails or follow up on any social interactions I’m having. If I have any errands, this is when I’ll get those done. I’ll head to the CrossFit gym around noon for a mobility session, watch the noon class work out, and then start my session at 1:00. My session lasts until 4:00, and then I hurry home because I’m usually starving. I’ll cook up whatever I have in my fridge. From there, ugh! My favorite part of the day!
I take an Epsom salt bath and unwind from the day’s training. Once I’ve got my muscles feeling like jelly, I’ll head back up to the gym for another mobility session or finish up any accessory work I have in my programming. Dinner time consists of a yummy steak or some salmon, some veggie–rice stir fry, and hanging out with my boyfriend and his roomates. Bedtime is usually no later than 10:30.  

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

I love challenging myself to drink enough water, sticking to my balanced diet day in and day out, making sure I’m getting enough sleep at night, and keeping my thoughts healthy and happy. I’ve found that mental health is just as important, if not more important, than physical health and well-being.  

How do you stay inspired?

I think I stay the most inspired by the people in my world. I’m constantly interacting and trying to surround myself with people who are better than me, chasing their dreams, and challenging themselves on a daily basis to be the best they can possibly be. I love running in such a crowd of people because on days where I don’t want to be running, they carry me through. On days they don’t want to be running, I get to carry them.

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

OMG! The best products I’ve recently stumbled across are Young Living essential oils! Young Living is a company that manufactures over 700 chemical-free products. From lotions, soaps, detergents, toothpaste, etcetera—we don’t realize how often we use these chemical-infested products on a daily basis. Young Living allows you to put all those worries to rest. They also have a line of essential oils and they are amazing. There’s thousands of remedies you can create to fix literally any problem you would go see a doctor for—and I’m a nurse! I swear by this stuff!

What are your favorite apps?

My favorite apps are…Instagram. Lol!

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

If you pull up my search bar, my bestie, @brookewellss shows up as a top page I visit. For productivity, I always peruse @smashwerx. But for pure entertainment, I love really interesting accounts—like @baddiewinkle and @tattoo.mafia.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

As much as I hate to admit it, I don’t read that often. I’ve been watching all the 50 Shades movies this week—guilty!—and listening to Pandora’s Sleep Station. Talk about relaxing.

If your pet could talk, how would they describe you?

I grew up with too many pets—I’ll never have pets in my own house. I’m petted out. If I did have a pet, they would probably say, “I wonder why she only puts those covers on her body when she leaves the house. She never has anything on when she’s home.”

What is your bucket list travel destination?

Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef!

What’s your coffee order?

Size doesn’t matter—usually smaller because I don’t like spending a fortune on coffee. But if someone else is buying, the biggest Skinny Vanilla Latte they’re willing to make!

What piece of advice has impacted you the most?

“Do not look up at the whole mountain ahead. Only focus on putting the right foot ahead of the left. Once that step is completed, focus on putting the left foot in front of the right foot. Once you’ve done those two small steps enough times, you can look out at the top of the mountain and see the masterpiece you’ve conquered. It’s only conquered if you focus on the small steps in the moment. Don’t get ahead of yourself and don’t harp on the steps you’ve already completed.” —Dr. Fortunato, my freshman year of college chemistry professor

Payton Sartain Of Hustle + Halcyon

This week’s Healthy Her Way feature is a breath of fresh, southern air in human form. Talking with the lovely Payton Sartain really brought back great memories of the hometown we both share: Fort Worth, Texas. Although we’ve both left the comforts of home to pursue our individual passions, I’ve been continuously inspired by watching Payton’s journey from afar.
Just after graduating from Texas A&M, Payton left everything she knew in our home state to pursue blogging and vlogging full time in Los Angeles. This was definitely a leap of faith, but this lady’s determination is second to none.
On her blog, cleverly titled Hustle + Halcyon, Payton shares her personal style, favorite simple recipes, go-to beauty tips, fitness secrets, and so much more. When we chatted about the blog’s name, Payton explained that it’s the perfect way to represent balancing life’s hustle with its halcyon—a concept with ancient Greek origins that means calm, peaceful, and tranquil.
One of the things that we’re most drawn to about Payton is the fact that you can always count on her to be unapologetically herself. She realizes that she may not be everyone’s cup of tea—and she’s okay with that.  
Payton has never been one to stick to the status quo, so you can expect to hear her real thoughts, see her fresh out of bed without makeup (or pants), and find out what really goes on behind the scenes of her fashion shoots. The effort and transparency she puts into each blog post and vlog really shines through.
When she’s not editing content for her blog, brainstorming new vlog concepts, or freelance modeling, Payton enjoys taking time to herself to focus on fitness and stay in tune with her body. Though she’s recently fallen in love with strength training, she’s also committed to trying new things—like boxing and tumbling classes—to challenge herself and get a boost of motivation.
If you ever need a reminder to chase your dreams and follow your heart, look to Payton for a little inspiration. You won’t be disappointed.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

As a blogger, every day is so different and it really keeps me on my toes! Some days I’m shooting for my blog, some days I’m running around town to meetings and showroom appointments, some days I’m freelance modeling, and some days I’m sitting in my apartment in my PJs (aka naked) working on the computer. The few daily consistencies I have are my daily sweat session, spending a little time outside, and at least one sit-down meal where I just eat and relax at home.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

The most important way I take care of myself is through my fitness routine. Connecting with my body and pushing myself as well as allowing myself time to decompress and relax puts me more at ease than anything else. I also focus on nourishing my body with the nutrients it needs to fuel my daily life. It’s so simple, but so important! Mentally and spiritually, I set aside time every day to read and write so I can stay engaged, reflect, and learn something new daily.

How do you stay inspired?

I stay inspired by reading, writing, and surrounding myself with amazing humans, and planning future endeavors and travels! I love reading poetry and inspiring words from other women, artists, entrepreneurs, et cetera. I’m constantly writing in my journal, reflecting, or making lists of things I want to do, places I want to go, or goals I’d like to accomplish. Planning trips with my favorite travel buddies is also ultra-inspiring and gives me something to look forward to!

What are the best products you’ve discovered recently?

My favorite products as of late are my Kopari coconut deodorant—it’s an aluminum-free deodorant that actually works!—Dr. Dennis Gross medical spray sunscreen, and Burt’s Bees BB Cream with SPF!

What are your favorite apps?

Oh, I have so many. The apps I use most often are Uber Eats, Google Calendar, Asana, Instagram—obviously—Spotify, and the Podcast app.

Whose Instagram is on your radar?

Again, so many! I follow so many unbelievably beautiful, strong, talented, inspiring women on Instagram.
Right now, my favorite fashion blogger to follow is @peaceloveshea for her incredible style and unapologetic attitude.
My favorite health and wellness guru to follow is @theskinnyconfidential because she has the best lifestyle tips and they’re so applicable to my own life.
Lastly, for general inspiration and good vibes, I follow @mj_day, the editor of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, for her continuous positivity, her love for supporting other women, and, obviously, all the beautiful bodies she posts on her Instagram.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to?

Right now, I’m finishing Tim Ferriss’ Tools of Titans, which is a book I highly recommend to absolutely everyone. I’m watching lots of “What I Eat in a Day” YouTube videos to get daily healthy meal inspiration. I’m listening to My Favorite Murder podcast, Sex with Emily podcast, and of course lots of my Hustle + Halcyon playlist on Spotify!

What would the title of your autobiography be?

I Want It All, by Payton Sartain

What woman in history would you love to take to brunch?

Hands down, June Carter Cash. I would love to meet the muse behind many of my all-time favorite songs sung by Johnny Cash. She seems incredibly strong and inspiring.

What superpower would you like to have?

I would love to read people’s minds. I’m kind of obsessed with knowing the good and bad thoughts people have about me and themselves. I’d love to know people’s perceptions of the world.

What’s your coffee order?

Either an almond milk latte with cinnamon and coconut sugar or cold brew with almond milk, cinnamon, and coconut sugar!

Jules Hunt Of Om & The City

Healthy Her Way is a weekly spotlight where we feature a woman in wellness who we find insightful, inspiring, genuine, and all-around badass. So naturally, we had to start with the radiant Jules Hunt of Om & The City. In case you aren’t familiar with her, Jules is a wellness blogger, certified yoga instructor, dog mama to Luna, and founder of AWAKE | The Space—an NYC-based wellness pop-up concept that has me ready to pack my bags and move to the Big Apple to join the #Awakeners.
It took just one (embarrassingly lengthy) creeping session on Jules’ Instagram feed—which is filled with stunning images of plants, nutritious food, powerful yoga poses, and genuine messages—to know we had to learn more! Fun fact: She also owns the cutest collection of workout leggings that I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
On her blog, Om & The City, Jules is transparent about her mission to encourage others to “celebrate healthy living from the inside out” and promotes “self-love, positivity, and empowerment.” Jules also shares stories from her personal battles, including her struggles with self-love and body dysmorphia.
Struggling with self-love is something almost every woman experiences at some point in time, but due to social stigmas, it isn’t discussed as openly as it needs to be. Fortunately, Jules is doing her part to start a dialogue around these important topics while sharing helpful insights from her personal journey.
Jules recognizes that wellness and balance go hand in hand, and we couldn’t agree more. She began her wellness career as a guest blogger and intern at a yoga studio and is now building an empire while treating every stranger she encounters like a true friend. Now that’s girl power! We can’t wait to see what you do next, Jules! You’re definitely one to watch.

A Day in the Life

What does your daily routine look like?

Every day is different when you work for yourself, but I do my best to keep some sort of structure. I wake up early—around 7 a.m. I do a little yoga and meditation to get centered and set the tone for my day. Then I usually make coffee or matcha and eat a light breakfast. By 9 a.m. I am at my desk starting my work day.
My days are typically spent answering emails, creating content, shooting for brands, writing blog posts or interviews, planning and strategizing for future content, etc. I keep the amount of events I attend down to a minimum, and I always make time to see my close friends.

What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?

For me, self-care is ongoing and just means listening to my body and honoring whatever it is telling me. Of course, I also love evenings spent with a face mask, good book, and my favorite human, Andrew, and my puppy, Luna.

How do you stay inspired?

I stay inspired by giving myself alone time to be with my thoughts. By creating space for my brain to process, I’m able to refuel. I also find inspiration from reading books, browsing my favorite blogs, listening to motivational podcasts, and listening to some good ol singer–songwriter tunes.

Well, I wouldn’t call her a historical figure, but I’d take Sophia Bush to brunch. She’s been one of my role models since I was in high school.

Would you rather explore space or the ocean? Why?

Ooh, probably space. The deep, dark ocean actually scares me.

Regular coffee with a nut milk or nut milk latte and always with a sprinkle of cinnamon
