Are you the adventurous couple whose first date included skydiving lessons? If you love to go off trail in exotic locations, these wild-child honeymoon destinations are meant for you.

    • Antarctica

      Believe it or not, a cruise to Antarctica is an amazing honeymoon destination. It’s remote, it’s quiet, and it offers plenty of reasons to snuggle up with your babe. But it does require more planning than your average trip to the Caribbean.
      For starters, there aren’t a lot of hotels on the remote continent. In fact, there aren’t any. So you’ll need to book your trip through an Antarctic travel company like Quark Expeditions. To go to Antarctica, you’ll need to take a cruise. Antarctic cruises take place from November to March, because those are summer months in the Southern Hemisphere. You’ll still need to pack super warm clothes, coats, and boots, though; summer temperatures in Antarctica are still well below freezing. Balmy!

      Once you’re in Antarctic waters, you can leave the ship and visit the actual continent. You can look forward to guided hikes, kayaking, and seeing penguins, seals, and pods of whales up close in a truly natural habitat.

  • Essaouira, Morocco

    Casablanca and Marrakesh are the top tourist spots in Morocco, but the resort town of Essaouira is a truly a hidden gem, which makes it the perfect honeymoon destination for adventure seekers. We’ve included Essaouira on our list of best honeymoon destinations for adventure because of how special the experience is.
    Essaouira (pronounced “Essa-wira”) is a bustling port city located on Morocco’s southern coast. It literally means “little picture” in Arabic. And with its pristine beaches, charming blue-and-white medina (the inner walled city that looks like Princess Jasmine should live there), and brightly colored boats bobbing in the harbor, it’s easy to see why. In Essaouira, you can spend days strolling through the souks and perusing the shops’ offerings, kite-surfing off the beach, and drinking traditional Moroccan sweet mint tea.

    Just across the water is the uninhabited Mogador Island, where the ruins of an ancient mosque still stand. Because an endangered breed of eagle lives on the island, there aren’t regular tours, but you can still visit the island from November to March. You’ll just have to obtain a permit from the city and then head down to to the pier, where you can hire a local fisherman to ferry you across.
    We recommend splurging on a stay at the Atlas Essaouira and Spa, located right on the waterfront. You can stroll their private beach then indulge in a spa treatment to wind down from the adventures you two will get into.

  • Maasai Mara Reserve, Kenya

    The Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya is the ultimate safari honeymoon destination for any couple who truly loves animals. The Serengeti is better known by Westerners, but the Maasai Mara Wildlife Reserve is widely considered the best place to see African wildlife in a natural habitat.

    If you have the time, most tour guides recommend taking at least two weeks to see and do everything at Maasai Mara, including a guided week-long expedition to nearby Mount Kilimanjaro. (If you can conquer Kilimanjaro, the troubles of marriage won’t have anything on you two.) Insiders also suggest scheduling your trip to the reserve between July and August, as more than a million wildebeest, zebras, and antelope migrate through the Maasai Mara Reserve.
    You’ll want to book your stay at one of the all-inclusive resorts around the perimeter of the reserve, like Richard Branson’s Mahali Mzuri, a luxury safari camp just outside of the reserve. There you can get to know the Maasai people, indulge in pan-African meals with locally sourced ingredients, and become closer than ever with your new spouse.

  • Budget Option: Tulum, Mexico

    Skip the spring breakers in Cabo and head to Tulum, a Caribbean city on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.
    There’s no shortage of places to stay in Tulum. Nueva Vida de Ramiro is one of the first eco-friendly hotels in Tulum. The hotel doesn’t skimp on luxury but still employs sustainable practices for the least amount of environmental impact.
    One of the best parts of Tulum is its central location to other incredible sites. If you rent a car, you can visit Punta Laguna Spider Monkey Preserve, about 40 miles outside of Tulum, to see more than 800 spider monkeys in their natural habitat. There are also the ruins at Cobá, which contain one of the last Mayan pyramids that tourists can still climb.

    Adventure seekers will also love rappelling down into one of the Yucatán’s many cenotes (underground pools of water formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock). It is thought that Mayans communicated with their gods in cenotes, as several skulls (believed to be sacrifices) have been found in some of the underground pools.
    Our favorite part of Tulum is the beach road. The businesses on this road are about 15 minutes south of the famous Tulum ruins, and you can spend days wandering in and out of the restaurants, shops, and bars that are located on each side of the road: right on the waterfront or ensconced in the jungle. Grab a drink and stroll the (free!) public beach as you lovebirds decide what to do that day—if anything at all.

    The Best Honeymoon Destinations If…You Want to Get Your Sweat On

    What’s the saying? The couple who sweats together stays together? Maybe not, but either way, for the newlyweds who are all about working out, you won’t want to miss these fitness-inspired honeymoon destinations.

  • Costa Rica

    Costa Rica may be known for its lush jungles and brilliant blue waters, but it’s also a fitness enthusiast’s dream honeymoon destination.
    For the couple who likes a challenge, climbing Costa Rica’s highest peak, Cerro Chirripó, is a must. The hike covers over 10,000 feet in elevation, but you’ll be rewarded at the top, where you can see both the Pacific and the Caribbean at the same time. To say it’s a good spot for a newlywed photo op is an understatement.

    When planning your trip, take into account that most hikers split the trek over two days, spending the night in one of several mountain huts along the trail, as tents are not allowed. (You’ll also need to make a reservation with the park before you hike. The reservation process can be a little tricky, but this website does a good job of explaining how to get your pass.)
    After an overnight camping trip, book the rest of your honeymoon accommodations at the glamorous Hacienda AltaGracia, a luxury resort that boasts private mountain biking and hiking trails, daily fitness classes, and a full-service spa.

  • Iceland

    Iceland is a popular honeymoon travel destination right now, thanks to lower airfares from a handful of major U.S. cities. For active honeymooners, Iceland is a hiker’s paradise.
    Travel junkie Maria Pimienta says, “If you do one thing in Iceland, Skógafoss Falls is a must-see.” Skógafoss Falls is a dramatic waterfall nearly 200 feet high, where you can see vivid rainbows on sunny days. The falls, which are about as tall as Disney World’s Cinderella castle, are easily accessible and are also located at the trailhead of the popular Fimmvörðuháls day hike.

    The Fimm hike, as it’s colloquially known, features countless scenic overlooks as you trek through two glaciers and an inactive volcano. Be prepared: The hike can be done in one day, but to really take in the scenery, most travel guides recommend making it a two-day trip, with an overnight stay at the mountain hut located halfway through the hike. Cuddle up with your sweetie and enjoy the remote landscape at night—fingers crossed that you’ll get to see see the Northern Lights.
    For adventurous accommodations, Pimienta suggests staying near Mount Hekla, an active volcano that erupted four times in the 20th century. Despite being located in an active volcano chain (or maybe because of it!), the Hotel Leirubakki is highly rated on TripAdvisor for its clean rooms, Hekla information center, and beautiful scenery.

  • Kitzbühel, Austria

    If the only thing you know about Austria is that the hills are alive, you need to visit Kitzbühel, an under-the-radar honeymoon destination in Europe’s Swiss Alps. The resort town of Kitzbühel is located about four hours west of Vienna, and with its numerous ski slopes and chalets, it’s the perfect honeymoon destination for the couple who loves to play in the snow.
    Joshua Willis, who honeymooned in Austria in 2017, recommends first flying into Vienna and splurging on a meal at Silvio Nickol at Palais Coburg. “We had dinner [at Silvio Nickol] and it was insane,” Willis tells us. “It is a two-star Michelin restaurant and probably the best dining experience I’ve ever had.”

    Once you’ve treated yourself to a honeymoon-worthy gourmet meal, book a train to Kitzbühel. Once there, consider staying at the Hotel Schloss Lebenberg, a renovated 400-year-old chalet perched just above the city, where the rooms are as dreamy as the views.
    The hotel also has a full-service spa that will be perfect after days spent tackling the Streif, one of the most famous ski runs in the world.

  • Budget Option: Rocky Mountain National Park

    If you want honeymoon adventure but can’t quite afford the airfare to Europe, look no further than Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

    Summer is the best time to visit the park, but it’s also the busiest season, which will require a bit of planning. You could stay in a hotel outside the park, but to get the most out of this honeymoon destination, consider packing a sleeping bag and camping at one of the five campgrounds in the park.
    From your campsite, you can access over 300 miles of hiking trails. You won’t want to miss the panoramic view from Flattop Mountain or the stunning vistas from Baker Pass.
    The eastern base camp for the park is the town of Estes Park. Twin Owls Steakhouse has vegetarian and gluten-free options, while Seasoned offers both of those options plus some vegan menu items. In Estes Park, you can also tour the Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s novel The Shining. If you see a ghost, take the opportunity to cuddle up!

The Best Honeymoon Destinations If…You’re Looking for Foodie Paradise

If your first date was at an exclusive pop-up from a James Beard Award–winning chef or your idea of a casual Friday night at home is taking a crack at a seven-course dinner for the two of you, you just might be foodies. These are our top honeymoon destinations for the couple who wants to experience gastronomic excellence.

  • Bordeaux, France

    The Bordeaux region of France is best known for its wine, and to add to that, the city has recently emerged as one of the top foodie hotspots in the world.
    “I highly suggest one of the guided wine tours,” says Morgan Anthony, who recently visited Bordeaux on a romantic getaway with her husband. “In order to get to the wineries in Bordeaux, you either have to rent a car, which can be hard if you don’t speak French, or book one of these tours and let them do the work for you!”

    Anthony recommends booking a private tour with Bordovino, which offers a variety of wine-tasting tours throughout the Bordeaux region. That said, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, renting a car and exploring the French countryside is an experience that can’t be replicated.
    “One restaurant in Bordeaux you don’t want to miss is Ô p’tit Bahut,” says Anthony. The bulk of Ô p’tit Bahut’s website is only en francais, but it’s fairly easy to navigate. The restaurant, which loosely translates to “the little buffet,” serves excellent charcuterie and fromage. It’s a perfect lunch stop after a day of touring wine country, but Anthony says reservations are a must, so be sure to call ahead.
    For dinner, you’ll want to try the Restaurant du Loup, which Anthony describes as classy but also cozy and casual. They’re known for their foie gras, but if goose liver isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other delicious menu selections.

  • Tokyo, Japan

    There’s nothing like a culture shock to bring two people together. Although Tokyo is easily one of the most advanced (and astonishingly clean) cities in the world, and Japanese people are incredibly welcoming, it’ll still take teamwork from the both of you to figure out where you’re going—and what to order.
    For a unique gastronomic experience, food writer and photographer Spencer Pernikoff recommends Tora-fugu Tei, which serves only fugu (pufferfish): “You can’t get it like this anywhere else in the world. They show you the live fish, then come down with it broken down, then they do like a five- to 10-course menu using the fish … All of it. Ovaries. Fins. Everything.”
    Tokyo, Japan
    When in Japan, do as the Japanese do: Eat sushi. As Pernikoff notes, “the quality of sushi basically all over the damn country is amazing,” so you really can’t go wrong anywhere.
    Specifically, he recommends Tonkatsu Yachiyo. He says, “It may seem weird to recommend a [sushi] place [that specializes in] fried pork cutlet, but it’s just amazing.” The restaurant is in Tsukiji Fish Market, and Pernikoff tells HealthyWay, “I figure foodie tourists are already going to [the market] anyway, ’cause it’s f***ing bonkers.” That’s a recommendation we’ll gladly take.
    Because of its lively nightlife and entertainment, Roppongi is a great base of operations while you’re in Tokyo. Stay at the ANA InterContinental hotel, and dine at Chef Pierre Gagnaire’s eponymous restaurant, which has had two Michelin stars since 2010.
    But there’s more to this honeymoon destination than food. No Tokyo honeymoon would be complete without participating in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, like this private ceremony in a traditional Japanese garden. You may not think of a tea ceremony as necessarily being romantic, but the quiet beauty of it will have you and your new spouse in reverent mood, perfect for reflecting on your future together.

  • Mendoza, Argentina

    Like Bordeaux in France, Mendoza is mostly wine country, known for producing Malbec wines. You’ll definitely want to take advantage of the many vineyards in the region, like Casa El Enemigo, the top-rated Mendoza vineyard on TripAdvisor. Pick out a bottle of wine together to take home and save as a special treat for your first anniversary.

    After a day of wine tasting, make like the locals and siesta for the afternoon (the perfect opportunity for some afternoon delight). Since most restaurants in Argentina don’t open for dinner until after 8 p.m., head to Silla 14 for coffee, pastries, and light sandwiches to tide you over until a late evening meal.
    For dinner, 1884, the restaurant of world-renowned Chef Francis Mallmann, is a must-do for any foodie couple traveling in Mendoza. The winery, which houses the restaurant, was built in 1884 and turned into a restaurant in 1996. The restaurant’s menu pays tribute to Argentinian culture, featuring South American items like spider crab and pacu.
    Instead of having dessert at the restaurant, head straight back to your hotel room (which is where we recommend most newlyweds spend at least 75 percent of the honeymoon anyway). On the way, pick up a few postre vigilante, a light Argentinian dessert made of cheese and quince paste that pairs perfectly with a sparkling wine like Siete Fincas Dulce Torrontes. Trust us, you’ll be glad you brought a snack back!

  • Budget Option: Thailand

    Did you know that many Thai spices are said to be sensual aphrodisiacs? It’s true, which is just one reason we’re naming Thailand one of the best honeymoon destinations—in Asia or anywhere else.

    Make sure to get in the honeymoon mood (as if you need any help!) by having a delicious green curry meal, which is packed with ingredients such as lemongrass, cardamom, basil, ginger, and asparagus, which are traditionally said to be aphrodisiacs.
    If you only have a short amount of time in Thailand, skip Bangkok and head for the northern city of Chiang Mai to check out the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, where street vendors sell everything from televisions to sizzling barbeque along a kilometer-long stretch of Chang Khlan Road. At the night bazaar, you’ll get an authentic Thai street food experience with a variety of local dishes like sai ua (spicy lemongrass sausages).
    In Thailand, the farther north you go, the spicier the food becomes. Make sure to visit the hidden local gem Khao Soi Mae Sai for the best khao soi (a spicy curried noodle dish) in Thailand. The restaurant doesn’t have a website, but it’s located at Ratchaphruek Alley. Make sure to get there early, as the restaurant usually sells out of khao soi fast.

Are you a traditionalist who prefers Romance (with a capital R) when it comes to your honeymoon destination? Well, scratch Paris from your short list, because we’ve chosen four of the most romantic honeymoon destinations sure to put you and your forever-boo in the mood for some serious lovin’.

  • Tofino, Vancouver

    If you thought the most romantic thing to do in Vancouver was a Twilight location tour, then you need to visit Tofino, a perfect honeymoon destination on Vancouver Island.
    Instead of booking your stay at one of the several resorts near Tofino, consider renting a private vacation home, like this one, through Airbnb. Home rental rates are often less expensive than hotels, meaning you can splurge on honeymoon fun, like hiring a private chef for a romantic meal. Plus, you won’t have to worry about the nosy couple in the next room when you’re trying to set the honeymoon mood.  
    Tofino, Vancouver
    For a relaxing, romantic day trip, head to Hot Springs Cove in Maquinna Provincial Park, which is accessible only by plane or boat. Once there, you’ll take a scenic walk (a little over a mile) to the springs, where you can take your pick from seven hot spring pools.
    Because it’s a bit of a trek, you should plan to spend most of the day at the springs, so pack a romantic picnic lunch and dry clothes for the return trip.  

  • Florence, Italy

    Like Dean Martin sang, “When the moon hits your eye/Like a big pizza pie/That’s amore!”
    Find your own amore in Florence, one of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe.

    Start your trip by staying at the four-star Torre di Bellosguardo, a luxury hotel with incredible views from high above the city. The hotel even has its own small garden and offers guests the chance to take authentic Italian cooking lessons with the lady of the house, Ana Franchetti, using vegetables sourced from the hotel garden.
    If you can bring yourself to leave your bed (and the hotel grounds), take advantage of Florence’s rich Renaissance art history by visiting the famed Uffizi Gallery. (Be aware though: Art at the gallery is so beautiful, it’s been known to overwhelm those who view it in a bizarre condition called Stendhal syndrome.)
    Don’t forget to visit Boboli Gardens, a centuries-old open-air museum with sculptures, fountains, and plenty of hidden spots where your honey can steal a kiss.
    Mostly, just enjoy your time in Florence. Wander the ancient streets hand-in-hand. Stop (often) for a caffè e gelato. The romance of slowly exploring Firenze cannot be overstated.

  • Big Sur, California

    With its sweeping views and and majestic mountains, Big Sur, California, is easily one of the most romantic honeymoon destinations in America.
    “Start your trip with a drive up the rugged coast on historic Highway 1,” says Jennifer Sparks, who recently visited Big Sur. Because of the mist that’s typical along the coastal highway, Sparks says to be patient at overlooks. “There were moments when you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face [for the mist and fog], but if you waited 15 minutes, the view was completely clear.”

    After a romantic drive up the coast, head into Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park where, Sparks gushes, “When you arrive into the park, you immediately begin to see the huge sequoias. The views are amazing!”
    For a little late-night fun, visit the hot springs at Esalen. They will open the springs between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. nightly to just 20 guests. Enjoy the view of every little star in the night sky in the clothing-optional pools; it’s an experience you and your love will never forget.
    For the ultimate in honeymoon romance, stay at the rustic-glam Post Ranch Inn, with stunning clifftop views and romantic honeymoon packages. Not feeling the $1,000-per-night price tag? (Shocking!) You might opt to stay at a more affordable bed and breakfast, like Big Sur River Inn, instead.

  • Budget Option: Croatia

    Eastern Europe may not seem like a honeymoon hotspot, but Croatia is quickly becoming one of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe for newlyweds on a budget.
    Elizabeth White, who recently honeymooned with her husband, Matt, in the walled city of Dubrovnik on Croatia’s coast, tells HealthyWay, “Try to find an Airbnb or hotel inside the city walls of Dubrovnik. We were there in the summer, and during the day the city was very crowded with tourists from cruise ships that dock for day trips.”
    But, says White, “When the sun goes down, and all of those crowds leave, the city is a completely different place. All of the restaurants set up tables in the streets, there are musicians everywhere, children playing, and awesome cliffside bars lit by candlelight.”

    White says one of her new hubby’s favorite things was walking the city walls. “Just make sure to do it [walk the walls] early in the morning or late in the afternoon, because they get really crowded,” White notes. “My husband loved this activity because we got to visit some of the filming locations of Game of Thrones.”

Decode The Dress Code: What To Wear To A Wedding

Wondering what to wear to a wedding? You’re not alone. After all, who doesn’t love a wedding dress code? Well, a lot of people. And others? Oh, they want some direction! At least a little bit. No one wants to show up in a full-length gown when everyone else is in sundresses.
Unfortunately, wedding dress codes have sort of gone out of style. When was the last time you got an invite with crystal clear directives? More likely it said something like “BBQ chic” or “casual cocktail attire.” What does that even mean?
“The codes of black tie are alive and well,” explains Kelsey Motes-Conners, founder and owner of Field: A Wedding Design Studio in Montana. “But outside of the clear requirements of black tie attire, and especially outdoors, guests’ attire can really vary in formality and style. Some couples are insistent on their wedding feeling comfortable and so encourage their guests to wear sensible shoes or warm layers, taking an almost reverse approach to attire recommendations.”
Motes-Conners continues:

And although rule of thumb is to not out-dress the couple, it seems that guests’ attire has more to do with the guest than the wedding—by which I mean what the guest feels is appropriate. I’ve seen grandmas in tracksuits and grandmas in fringed flapper dresses and grandmas in floor-length gowns; uncles in white tie and uncles in denim with imposing belt buckles; friends in all manner of sundresses, wool fedoras, sequin bodycons, polished wingtips, tennis shoes. But I think the default is very much cocktail attire.

What to Wear to a Wedding: the Ground Rules

It’s hard to go totally wrong figuring out what to wear to a wedding, but it is possible. Here are a few choices that are a clear no:

  • Don’t wear white. Or white with flowers. Or white with stripes. Or white with teeny tiny polka dots. Leave the white to the bride. If you have to ask if it’s too white, it is.
  • Be cautious about wearing black. It’s not a funeral, and you don’t want your friend to think you think it is. That said, black is no longer totally unacceptable, especially at big-city weddings. If it’s the wedding of a close friend, check in with her to see if she has an opinion one way or another.
  • Don’t wear denim. Like, anywhere on your outfit. No jeans, no jean jackets, no cool skirts. Save it for the Friday night rehearsal dinner or the brunch.
  • Don’t dress like you’re going to the club. You know what we mean: Make sure your booty isn’t showing and your breasts are (basically) covered. Make sure nothing is ripped. If you wouldn’t wear it in front of Grandpa, save it for another time.
  • Don’t make it about you. Look your best! But don’t turn the spotlight on you. Crazy hat? Pass. Neon jumpsuit? Skip it. Let your friend have her day by not grabbing the spotlight from her.
  • Don’t wear something with stains. This means getting your clothes to the dry cleaner a few weeks before the event. There’s nothing worse than pulling out your fave outfit and realizing there’s wine on it from the last wedding you attended.

The fanciest, most formal of all weddings. Think: floor-length, black (yes, black!), classy. Nothing too crazy (not the time to wear a club-appropriate bandage dress). You can even wear gloves! Men: wear a white tie.

  • What to wear to a religious ceremony: Dress modestly and/or cover your shoulders. You don’t want to feel awkward in a church, mosque, or synagogue. If you’re determined to wear a strapless affair, cover yourself entirely with a shawl that you can then remove for the party. Choose a dress that goes to your knee.
  • What to wear to an outdoor wedding: Don’t wear heels. You’ll spend the entire evening sinking into the grass. Flats or chunky low heels are the way to go.

Beneath The Surface: What Causes Cystic Acne And Which Treatment Options Actually Work

While you wouldn’t be able to tell from her clear complexion, Holly Cutler battled with severe cystic acne 20 years ago. She tried medical and topical treatments with no success. Amid the physical difficulties, cystic acne also affected her emotionally.
The emotional impact of having cystic acne all over my face was devastating,” she says. “You wouldn’t believe the comments people actually made to my face to blame me for the breakouts.” People even called her ugly to her face.
Eventually an esthetician managed to resolve her cystic acne through multiple sessions that involved European-style facials and light-based therapy. But, as is the case for many people who have cystic acne, Holly’s skin was scarred afterward. She says this was a shocking surprise, especially since there were no scar-reversing treatments available at the time. This journey prompted her to look into ways of healing her skin’s scars—and eventually she did just that.

The emotional impact of having cystic acne motivated Holly to become a medical esthetician herself. Now a well-known figure in the field, she founded FACE Skincare~Medical~Wellness in Bingham Farms, Michigan, where she and her staff use approaches that she says are far more advanced than those that cured her cystic acne nearly 20 years ago as they incorporate lasers, injectables, and naturopathy.
Cystic acne affects many people and as with Holly, it can have a huge emotional impact. Fortunately, it can be treated. Here’s what you need to know about your cystic acne treatment options.

What is cystic acne?

Acne occurs when a pore gets clogged. Typically, a clogged pore will have dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria inside,” says Janet Prystowsky, MD, a Manhattan-based dermatologist. “When the clogged pore is deep in your skin, then it can develop into a cyst, i.e. a tender bump from inflammation.”
A cystic acne pimple is deeper than a regular whitehead. As a result, it doesn’t have a white bump that can be popped, says Prystowsky. The cyst can feel painful and might be felt under the skin before it shows. The area around the cyst might also appear inflamed and red.
Cystic acne can affect people of all ages, but it’s most likely to affect people in their teens and early twenties, says Toni Stockton, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Arizona. “The most common age to develop acne is between 12 and 24 years of age but we still see some patients continue to have to deal with this frustrating condition well into their forties and fifties,” she notes. The acne typically appears on one’s face, back, neck, chest, and upper arms.

Genetics are probably playing a role in some patients but hormones are a more common cause for cystic acne,” says Stockton. Endocrine conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, for example, can increase your chances of developing cystic acne.
“The type of sebum (oil) that we that we produce can play a role in whether we get small bumps, whiteheads and blackheads, or cystic lesions,” she adds. “In some patients, their sebum causes only a small reaction in the skin but in others, their bodies make a lot of inflammatory cells that cause a deeper inflammation.”

How can cystic acne be treated?

Unfortunately, cystic acne isn’t something that simply goes away over time—so don’t wait to get help, or the scarring will just get worse, warns Holly. Cystic acne can be painful and inconvenient, but fortunately, it’s treatable. Your best bet is to see a dermatologist as soon as possible so that they can treat your acne before it becomes more severe. According to Stockton and Prystowsky, there are a number of different treatments available for those who suffer from cystic acne.

    • Steroid Injections

      A cortisone shot, or direct injection of cortisone into a cystic pimple, can be a really effective way to reduce its size and impact. There are side effects, though: The area might look sunken in after some time, as the cortisone affects the fatty tissue in the area around the injection site. Additionally, if cortisone shots are administered too often, they can adversely impact the skin’s ability to heal itself.

    • Antibiotics

      Antibiotics like minocycline or tetracycline can help reduce cystic acne by preventing the spread of bacteria, a main cause of acne. “We do try to limit the length of time that we use antibiotics to three to six months if possible due to the development of drug resistance,” says Stockton. “If a patient is not getting better in this period of time then we would move to another treatment option.” Note that these medications aren’t advisable for pregnant women or those who might conceive while on a course of treatment for cystic acne.

    • Topical Treatments

      Your dermatologist might recommend retinoid creams and benzoyl peroxide washes to treat your cystic acne. Retinoid topicals, which include a derivative of vitamin A, work to unclog pores whereas benzoyl peroxide topicals reduce acne by killing the acne-causing bacteria on your skin. Some people might be sensitive to these topicals and have adverse reactions that could include painful, red, itching or peeling skin at the application site.

    • Oral Contraception

      Certain forms of oral contraception can improve skin conditions by balancing the hormones, which in turn will regulate sebum production. Of course, some people experience mental and physical side effects when they’re on birth control, which means this treatment isn’t advisable for everyone.

    • Cryosurgery

      A more invasive therapy used by Stockton and other dermatologists to treat cystic acne is cryosurgery. Cryo means cold and cryosurgery involves applying extremely cold substances, like liquid nitrogen or cold carbon dioxide, to the cysts. Cryosurgery causes ice crystals to form within the damaged skin cells, which eventually tears those cells apart. It also reduces blood flow to the cysts, and it can reduce acne scarring. Note that you may feel a tingling, uncomfortable sensation after treatment.

  • Isotretinoin

    Isotretinoin, also known as Accutane or Roaccutane, is a strong and effective treatment for acne. It contains a strong form of vitamin A. While Stockton prescribes it to her patients, she notes that it’s only used as a last resort for cystic acne that resists other forms of treatment. This is because isotretinoin unfortunately has many side-effects, including dry mouth, chapped lips, and nosebleeds. As with antibiotics, isotretinoin is not advisable for pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as it can be lethal to a fetus.

  • Changes in Diet and Lifestyle

    One possible way to reduce cystic acne is to start with the food you consume. Stockton says that dairy and whey protein products can trigger or worsen cystic acne. Prystowsky recommends patients avoid whey, dairy, and sugary foods to see how their skin responds.
    Many people are interested in naturopathic, holistic approaches to treating cystic acne. Doug Cutler, ND, of Cutler Integrative Medicine notes that diet and food sensitivities can be linked to cystic acne. As a naturopathic physician, he treats patients by first running a full food sensitivity panel and a comprehensive stool analysis.
    “Food sensitivities originate in the gut and create chronic inflammation, which can impact every part of the body,” he explains. “80 percent of our immune system is found in the gut, so we want to make sure there is no chronic inflammation, which can imbalance the hormones and lead to cystic acne.”
    From there, he might place the patient on an elimination diet for a few months. This involves removing certain foods from your diet to see whether you have an intolerance for them. The elimination diet can help heal the gut and reduce inflammation.

Cutler also suggests supplements like probiotics and addressing emotional and lifestyle factors. “Internalizing stressors and negative emotions can lead to inflammation and skin issues,” he points out. “It is important to recognize our emotional habits and make lifestyle changes, as well as do mind–body medicine therapies throughout our life.” Cutler’s assertion that stress has been linked to skin conditions and aggravating hormonal imbalances is also supported by ample research and more mainstream MDs.
Of course, many people are drawn to alternative cystic acne treatments because of the side effects associated with mainstream treatments. That said, it’s important to remember that alternative treatments may have side effects, too. Stockton notes that many of the alternative treatments that are suggested for cystic acne haven’t been studied thoroughly. Because of this, certain alternative treatments can be risky unless done under the supervision of a health practitioner. For example, alternative treatments like including supplements and herbs in one’s diet require straightforward conversations with healthcare providers, and it’s imperative to tell your doctor which supplements you’re taking since they can interact with other medications.

We have to be careful with these types of products because these are not regulated, so some of the products can obtain other materials in them and some of these contain very high levels of supplementation that can even be toxic in the younger population,” Stockton says. “There are a few products that have some support. The best help with navigating alternative treatments is to make a consultation with a medical provider who is knowledgeable with the current use of these products.”
In addition to supplementation and dietary changes, many people are after natural home remedies for cystic acne, but Stockton and Prystowsky both advise that there aren’t any effective home remedies. Seeing your dermatologist should be your first port-of-call, and from there, they can advise you on how to properly care for your skin.

Should you pop the pimples caused by cystic acne?

Definitely not, according to Stockton. “The more you manipulate it, the more likely you are to cause permanent scarring,” she says. “I would suggest leaving the surgical treatment of acne to skincare professionals to avoid unnecessary scarring of the skin.” As tempting as it may be, the depth of cystic acne means the follicle will just burst within the skin, causing further inflammation.

Speaking of scarring, one of the most difficult aspects of cystic acne is dealing with the scars it leaves behind. “The best way to reduce your chances of permanent scarring is to seek care early, before you develop the scars and to avoid picking and squeezing cystic lesions,” says Stockton. “Understand this can be a long process, but most of the time, we can successfully control the condition.”

The Psychological Impact of Cystic Acne

Unfortunately, we live in a society where clear skin is seen as essential to beauty. For many people with cystic acne, this can be heartbreaking as they can be made to feel unattractive and undervalued. As in Holly’s case, people might also be bullied or teased because of their skin condition. Cystic acne can have an effect on your mental wellbeing, too.
One study shows that adolescents with acne—especially teenage girls—are likely to experience negative psychological impacts including anxiety due to their skin conditions. Another study links acne to poorer mental health and lower self-worth. Of course, this stress isn’t good for your soul or your skin, and unfortunately stress is related to more agitated and blemished skin, as well as a range of physical and mental health issues.

There is hope for Cystic Acne Sufferers

Therapy can be a useful way to work through these feelings. Kelley Kitley, LCSW, says that she often has clients who struggle with self-image and body-image issues due to acne. She recommends therapy to anyone who struggles with self-esteem and confidence issues due to acne or any other cause.

The treatment I often use is cognitive behavioral therapy, which is restructuring automatic negative thoughts and focusing on the positive,” she says. “If they are getting treatment for the acne, we work on recognizing that the acne is temporary.” While it’s important to sort out the physical effects of cystic acne as soon as possible, the same can be said for the emotional effects of acne. It’s best to see a therapist sooner rather than later.
Holly feels that she’s lucky because her cystic acne motivated her to find her true calling. “I will never forget my experience with cystic acne, and would never want to go through it again, but it did provide me with a life changing experience,” she says. “If we use our challenges instead of letting our challenges use us, we can change the world one person at a time. That is my purpose and destiny now, every day.”

From Hummus To Vegan Meringue: Why Chickpeas Should Always Be In Your Pantry

You’d never guess by looking at it, but the humble chickpea is actually one of the most useful items in your pantry. Chickpeas are the main ingredient in classic favorites such as hummus and falafel, but they can also be used to bulk up vegetarian curries and stews. Even the water from canned chickpeas can be used to create a delicious vegan meringue. (Yes, you read that correctly!)
Whether you love the convenience of canned chickpeas or the nutty flavor profile of dried chickpeas, there are plenty of good reasons to get inspired by this versatile ingredient.

Chickpeas are a nutritional powerhouse.

A single one-cup serving of cooked chickpeas contains an incredible 50 percent of your recommended daily intake of fiber and 14.5 grams of protein—a winning combination that will help you stay full throughout the day. With a modest 269 calories per serving, chickpeas are a natural pairing to fruits and vegetables as well as lean sources of protein such as chicken and fish.
Chickpeas are also an excellent source of folate, which can help prevent anemia and birth defects when consumed in adequate quantities by pregnant woman, and manganese, a trace mineral your body needs for normal brain and nerve function as well as fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Chickpeas are a good source of iron if you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, as a one-cup serving contains 4.7 milligrams or 26 percent of your recommended daily intake.

Chickpeas: Are they a fruit or a vegetable?

Neither. Chickpeas are legumes—a broad term that refers to either the fruit or seed of a plant. Chickpeas are actually the seeds of the chickpea plant, which is why they are classified as legumes rather than a fruit or veg.

Canned Versus Dried Chickpeas

Canned chickpeas win major points for convenience as there’s no overnight soaking or lengthy cooking period to take into consideration when using them. The main drawback of using canned chickpeas is that they tend to be on the bland side, lacking the depth of flavor found in dried chickpeas.
Canned chickpeas are ideal for use in dishes whose flavor relies on other components, such as bean salads, curries, and soups. Dried chickpeas are much nuttier in flavor and are great for recipes such as hummus and falafel, where their flavor plays a starring role.

Cooking Dried Chickpeas Like the Pros

To make dried chickpeas from scratch, soak the chickpeas in plenty of cold water in a large bowl or nonreactive pot for 12 to 24 hours*, by which time the chickpeas should have doubled in size. Stainless steel is your best bet since reactive vessels, like those made of aluminum, copper, or cast iron might react with the chickpeas, adversely affecting their taste, color, or smell.
Drain the chickpeas in a colander and rinse with cold water. Transfer the soaked chickpeas to a large stock pot and cover with at least three inches of water. Bring the water to a boil and then lower to a gentle simmer, cooking uncovered for anywhere from 60 minutes to two (or more) hours. Taste periodically to test for doneness, making sure to replenish the cooking liquid as it evaporates. The perfectly cooked chickpea should be firm yet soft in the middle, but don’t fret if you’ve overcooked your chickpeas—these can be ideal for dips like hummus!
*Forgot to soak your chickpeas? It’s not too late! You can cover dried chickpeas with boiling water and let them sit (off the heat source) for one hour in a nonreactive pot or large, heat-proof bowl before proceeding to cook them as you normally would.

Freezing Chickpeas 101

Chickpeas triple in size once they’ve been cooked, which means you might have leftovers that are ideal for freezing. Frozen chickpeas can be kept in resealable bags for up to six months and defrosted in under an hour at room temperature. For the best frozen chickpeas, arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet to ensure they freeze individually (rather than in a chunk or pile) before transferring them into bags or containers.

Buying the Best Chickpeas

Even dried chickpeas need to be fresh, although it can be difficult to identify chickpeas that are past their prime. Bags of dried chickpeas that have sat for too long will wind up shriveled and discolored and can take much longer to cook than a fresher option would. The best place to shop for dried chickpeas is your local Middle Eastern, Greek, or Arabic grocery store as they tend to have higher turnover rates. If dried chickpeas are unavailable in your area, they can be purchased online.

Cooking with Chickpeas

Aquafaba is the totally amazing but entirely unassuming liquid found in all cans of chickpeas. If you thought a good vegan meringue, marshmallow, or egg white cocktail was an impossibility, prepare to have your mind blown by aquafaba. Amanda Li, registered dietitian, founder of Wellness Simplified, and professor at the Chef School at George Brown College, is a huge fan of aquafaba as a vegan alternative to egg whites.
She suggests “[saving] the water from canned chickpeas and pouring it into your KitchenAid mixer with the whisk attachment. Add a bit of sugar and whisk on high for 10 to 15 minutes. You’re left with an incredible white foam, which you can than bake into meringues or use in desserts that require beaten egg whites like souffles or angel food cake.”
To replace egg whites in a recipe with aquafaba, substitute 2 tablespoons of aquafaba for every one medium egg white. Note that the liquid leftover from cooking dried chickpeas will probably be too thin for achieving your desired result, so sticking to the aquafaba from a can of chickpeas is your best bet.

Enhance your protein-packed dishes with chickpea flour.

Chickpea flour is made from grinding up chickpeas, which means it retains all the amazing health benefits of regular chickpeas (aka tons of protein, fiber, and iron). Popular in Indian, Italian, French, and Bangladeshi cuisines, chickpea flour is just starting to gain momentum in the States.
Chickpea flour can be used to make fritters, flat breads, crepes, and in Li’s case, her Savory Chickpea Waffle recipe. Li is a huge fan of chickpea flour not only for its taste but “because even for people who may not like beans or legumes, it’s a great way for them to start incorporating these fabulous high-fiber goodies into their diet!”

Baked Falafel

Most of us are familiar with falafel thanks to street stands and Middle Eastern restaurants, but did you know these vegan patties are easy to make at home with chickpeas? Try this homemade version made with dried chickpeas next time you’re hankering for falafel.  Tuck them into pita bread or add them to your next Buddha bowl. Instead of the traditional frying method, this recipe relies on baking the falafel in order to cut down on excess fat.

Servings: 6 to 8 (makes about 24 falafel patties)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of dried chickpeas (canned chickpeas won’t work)
  • 1 small red onion, diced
  • 6 cloves of garlic, finely minced (or about 1 Tbsp. of jarred minced garlic)
  • ½ cup fresh parsley, loosely packed
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, loosely packed
  • 1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. cumin (make sure the cumin is fresh as it needs to have a pronounced taste for this recipe)
  • Pinch of cayenne (optional)
  • 2 tsp. kosher salt
  • ¾ tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp. baking powder (this acts as the leavener in this recipe—ensuring airy, lightly textured falafels)
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. grapeseed oil (opt for this oil for its neutral flavor and high smoke point)

Special Equipment:

  • Large bowl
  • Colander
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Food processor
  • Large cast iron pan OR large rimmed baking sheet
  • Long-handled tongs

Method:

  1. Soak the chickpeas in a large bowl that has been filled with cold water, making sure all of the chickpeas are covered with at least 3 inches of water. Let them soak for at least 12 hours (up to 24 hours is ideal). The chickpeas should be double in volume by the end of their soaking time.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375° F before proceeding to the next step.
  3. Drain the soaked chickpeas in a colander and transfer to a food processor. Add the red onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, cayenne, salt, black pepper, baking powder, and the juice of half a lemon to the food processor and pulse until smooth.
  4. Using your hands, roll the falafel mixture into small balls about 1 inch in diameter. You should end up with about 24 falafels.
  5. Coat the bottom of a large cast iron pan or wide-rimmed baking sheet with grapeseed oil (you might need to use two vessels to cook all the falafel at once).
  6. Place the pan or baking sheet in the hot oven for 10 minutes or until the oil begins to look shimmery.
  7. Remove the pan or baking sheet from the oven. Working quickly and using long-handled tongs, space out the falafel balls in the hot oil so that they aren’t touching before moving them to the oven.
  8. Bake the falafels for 15 minutes. Carefully turn them over and bake for another 15 minutes. When you remove them from the oven, the falafels should be golden-brown and slightly crispy.
  9. Serve the falafels warm in a pita or in a salad with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, and tahini.

Basic Hummus (and Some Suggestions on how to Spice it Up!)

Hummus is so delicious and easy to make at home that you’ll be wondering why you’ve been settling for store-bought all this time. This basic recipe for hummus uses canned chickpeas, but it’s also a great way to use dried chickpeas that have been overcooked. Once you’ve mastered this basic hummus recipe you can create your own variations on the classic dip (or try one of the suggestions below).

Ingredients:

  • One 15-ounce can of chickpeas, drained OR scant 2 cups of overcooked chickpeas
  • Juice of one lemon
  • ¼ cup tahini*
  • 1 to 2 garlic cloves, minced**
  • 3 Tbsp. olive oil + more for drizzling
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • ½ tsp. kosher salt + more to taste
  • 2 to 4 Tbsp. iced water***
  • Paprika
  • Small handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped

*Tahini is a thick paste made from ground sesame seeds. It has a nutty smell and flavor and is an important ingredient in Middle Eastern cooking. Tahini can separate easily, so stir in the top layer of oil before using.
**The garlic used in hummus will become significantly stronger after even a day in the fridge. If you plan on having leftovers, restrain yourself to a single clove of garlic. Your loved ones will thank you!
***Using iced water helps with emulsion, resulting in a hummus that is whipped and rich.

  • Shallow bowl for serving

Method:

  1. Add the chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, cumin, and salt to a food processor. Blitz until smooth (this may take several minutes), scraping down the sides with a spatula as needed.
  2. Beginning with 2 tablespoons of iced water and using up to 4 tablespoons, pulse the chickpea mixture until completely emulsified. The hummus should have a texture like whipped clay and be completely smooth.
  3. Transfer the hummus to a shallow serving dish and serve at room temperature with warm pita bread or crudites. Top the hummus with a dusting of paprika, a drizzle of olive oil, and a sprinkling of fresh parsley.

Moroccan-Style Hummus

Add 1 teaspoon of Ras el Hanout and one preserved lemon. Top with cilantro and mint.

Sweet Potato Hummus

Add the flesh of one steamed or roasted sweet potato and the juice of one orange (in place of the lemon juice). Top with Aleppo pepper.

Avocado Hummus

Add the flesh of one avocado, 1 teaspoon chili powder, the juice of one lime (in place of the lemon juice), and top with chopped tomatoes, red onions, and cilantro.

Basic Roasted Chickpea Recipe

Roasted chickpeas can be seasoned with wide variety of herbs and spices, making them an easily customizable snack for any occasion. When making roasted chickpeas it’s important to ensure the chickpeas are completely dry before adding the oil and seasoning or they will end up with a soggy coating and a mushy texture.
Watch the chickpeas carefully as they are roasting as they can go from undercooked to burned in a matter of minutes. Store roasted chickpeas in an airtight lidded contained away from direct sunlight for up to two weeks.

Ingredients:

  • One 15-ounce can of chickpeas, drained and patted dry
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • ½ tsp. kosher salt + more to taste
  • Your choice of seasoning: smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, Italian seasoning, dill, herbes de Provence, curry powder, za’atar, or garlic powder

Special Equipment:

  • Paper towel or clean tea towel
  • Mixing bowl
  • Large spoon or spatula
  • Parchment paper
  • Rimmed baking sheet

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Dry the chickpeas completely, rolling them in between two paper towels or in a clean tea towel.
  3. Transfer the chickpeas to a mixing bowl. Drizzle the olive oil over the chickpeas and add the kosher salt and your favorite herbs and spices. Taste a chickpea before roasting to see if they need more salt or other seasoning.

We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping—or at least trying to: getting our rooms to the perfect temperature and lighting, nestling under just the right amount of covers, arranging our limbs into the best sleeping position. And yet sleeping—one thing that should be so easy—is a struggle for many.
Of course, sleep is complicated. Sleep quality is a major health issue for Americans. According to 2014 numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35.2 percent of adults get less than seven hours of sleep per night.
If that sounds like you and you’re looking to make a change, take note: Your bedtime and your sleeping position aren’t the only factors that determine the quality of your sleep. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, improving your sleep hygiene—the habits that affect your sleep—can make a substantial difference. If you’re on prescription medication, living la vida loca, feeling especially stressed out at work, or are indulging in a few too many coffees a day (especially close to bedtime), look at tweaking those parts of your life where you can.
But if you’ve already zenned out around matters both professional and personal, you eat the healthiest foods at the healthiest of times, and your bedroom is perfectly designed for a peaceful slumber—and you still can’t sleep, it might be time to look at how you’re sleeping. Specifically, you need to figure out the best sleeping positions for you because the way you sleep impacts how good that sleep is—and your overall health.
“The biggest purpose for sleep is to help us recover from the activities of the day physically, mentally, and emotionally,” says Scott Bautch, chiropractor and president of the American Chiropractic Association’s Council on Occupational Health. “The physical part is that if I sleep in a good posture, meaning neutral, my spine is resting, and everything is in the right position…I’m trying to help the body recover by trying to be as neutral as possible, so those ligaments and muscles get a chance to recover from the activities of the day.”  
A poor sleeping position can contribute to all sorts of conditions, from insomnia to back pain. But you can make a few minor changes to the way you lay to figure out the best sleeping position. Don’t be surprised if you see—and feel—major results.

Best Sleeping Positions: The Basics

Sleep specialists typically break down positions into three categories: side, back, and stomach. Within those three categories, there are plenty of variations. For instance, sleeping in the fetal position will actually affect you differently than sleeping with your back straight in what some refer to as the log position.
Sleep specialists typically make a simple recommendation: Do what makes you comfortable. If you’re having issues falling asleep or staying asleep, however, the best sleeping position for you likely involves sleeping on your side. 
That’s especially true if you have trouble breathing in other sleep postures. Harvard’s Division of Sleep Medicine also suggests that side sleeping is the best sleeping position for you if you struggle with troubled breathing at night as it may reduce the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), an extreme and potentially dangerous type of snoring. The school notes that weight loss and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy are more effective methods of ensuring long-term healthy sleeping, but if you only experience breathing issues while sleeping on your back, you might consider being comfortably situated on your side as your new best sleeping position.

Best Sleeping Positions for Insomnia

Around 10 percent of American adults suffer from daytime impairment resulting from insomnia and around 30 percent of American adults deal with regular sleep disruption. It’s clear that sleep is a problem in America, and it seems to be getting worse: According to reporting from The New Yorker, insomnia diagnoses rose from fewer than one million to more than five million between 1993 and 2006. It’s a big deal, considering that sleep deprivation can seriously affect health.
To treat insomnia, you have to identify the cause of the condition. That’s not always easy, though, since everything from diet to television-watching habits can affect how you sleep (or don’t). One factor that researchers generally agree upon is that finding the best sleeping position for you can affect whether or not you’re getting healthy sleep.
Issues like back pain and indigestion can also contribute to insomnia, and if you’re constantly tossing and turning to try to get more comfortable, that won’t help you solve any of those issues. That’s why identifying any other physical issues—and attempting to remedy those through sleeping positions and other measures—is key.

Best Sleeping Positions for Back Pain

Back pain is incredibly prevalent. In 2012, the American Physical Therapy Association reported that nearly two-thirds of Americans experience low back pain. Put another (equally painful) way, on any given night, some 31 million people will suffer from low back pain in the States alone.
Even worse, low back pain and poor sleep work together to make sufferers miserable: One study from The Clinical Journal of Pain found that a bad night’s sleep indeed led to a day of increased back pain. Here’s the kicker: A day of worse pain was also associated with a bad night’s sleep! It’s easy to fall into a downward spiral of pain and fatigue.  
Finding the best sleeping position for back pain that works for you could be a game changer. Here’s what medical science says about finding the best sleeping positions for back pain:

Supine Sleeping (or Log Position)

The best sleeping positions for back pain involve keeping your posture neutral, meaning that the body doesn’t bend or twist out of line. Bautch explains, “If you’re standing up and your ears are over your shoulders, and your shoulders are over your hips, and your hips are over your knees, there’s a neutral posture from front to back and left to right. So we want to reproduce that [in sleep].”
Whatever you do, don’t sleep on your stomach, researchers say. The key to finding a healthy sleeping position that eases pain in your back is to keep the spinal column aligned according to its natural shape, which requires support. Sleeping on your stomach doesn’t offer much support for the spine and may even push it into an unnatural curve.
Sleeping face-down can lead to other health problems as well, Bautch warns. “That’s by far the worst,” he says, referring to stomach-sleeping. “People that sleep on their stomachs have more hand and arm problems than any other population…And because we’re not going to breathe into our pillows, we twist our neck all night long. Often we bring our knee and arm up. We’ll put our hand underneath our head, and that continued irritation, we don’t recover from. As life goes on, we start to have more numbness symptoms in our neck and arm.”
Your spine is a long cord of vertebrae, the smaller interlocking bones. Between each vertebra, there’s a squishy intervertebral disk—the skeleton’s shock absorbers. These disks are mostly made of water. Why is this important? When you’re upright, you put pressure on your intervertebral disks, slowly squeezing out some of the fluid. Sleep is when your disks rehydrate. Therefore, the best sleeping position for back pain is one that evenly distributes your body weight to keep pressure on the spine at a minimum.
If you’re most comfortable sleeping on your back, that’s great (unless you’re pregnant—in which case, read on!). “Sleeping on your back is definitely the best position for all body parts, because we’re less likely to twist or compress the nerves,” says Bautch. “Sleeping on your back is definitely the preferred way.”
Just be sure to get a few extra pillows. Place a small one behind your knees, bending them slightly. (If you want to get technical, bend your knees to 135 degrees—the angle prescribed by ergonomist Bart Haex in his book Back and Bed: Ergonomic Aspects of Sleeping.) Find a pillow that keeps your neck and shoulders in line with your ears and hips, which will keep your spine straight all the way to the base of your skull.

Lateral Sleeping

The lateral sleeping position—lying on your side—can also be a good sleeping position for back pain. Pull your knees a bit upward toward your torso to maintain stability. The right mattress also goes a long way here. You want your hip and shoulder to sink into the mattress just enough to keep your spine straight. Perfect the lateral sleeping position by placing a firm body pillow between your knees.
“If you sleep on your side, think about if you looked down and said, ‘Okay, here’s how wide my knees are when I’m standing normally,’” Bautch says. “I’m a big fan of body pillows. You put them between your knees, from your ankles to your knees, all the way to your arms. You hug them, and you have a tendency to keep your arms and legs in the right place.”
Try to align your hips, shoulders, and ears. If you can’t, adjust your pillows. “From your shoulders, you could draw a line on your spine and it would go all the way to your pelvis,” Bautch says. “And if I drew that line, it would continue right through between your knees and all the way to your ankle. That’s how I’d want to try to sleep.”
Long story short: The best sleeping positions for back pain are supine (on your back) and lateral (on your side). Use pillows to support parts of your body that aren’t sinking into the mattress, and to keep your body stable during sleep. Remember, you won’t be awake to purposely adjust.
And if that back pain gets worse, or doesn’t go away? Talk to your doctor.  

Best Sleeping Positions for Neck Pain

Neck pain and your sleeping position are strongly associated with one another. In fact, poor sleeping positions can not only lead to unhealthy sleep, but to musculoskeletal disorders in the neck and shoulders as well. You want the neck to remain straight, lying in the neutral posture. Unfortunately, that’s not something most contemporary pillows are built for.
“Most pillows are biggest in the middle and smallest at the edge,” says Bautch. “But they really need to be bigger on the edge and smaller in the middle because our head needs to sink down so we stay neutral all the time.”
If you have a conventional pillow, you probably need more neck support to get truly healthy sleep, especially if you sleep on your side. Your pillow alone is unlikely to keep your neck and spine aligned, which means it can exacerbate neck pain rather than providing relief.
Bautch suggests you modify your pillow. “Roll up a towel or something. You need to get an edge. The edge needs to be more supportive than the middle.”
Again, sleeping on your back is the best sleeping position to keep your body in a neutral position. If you can drift off on your back (and don’t snore, especially if you’re sleeping with your boo), you won’t go wrong with that sleeping position. Your neck will thank you.

Best Sleeping Positions for Digestion

Everyone knows they’re not supposed to eat just before bed, but many people do it anyway. Maybe you worked late and got home starving. Maybe dinner was just so satisfying that it put you into a food coma and bedtime became inevitable. No matter what happened, your sleeping position can determine how well your body is able to digest that late-night meal. 
Figuring out your best sleeping position is particularly important if you’re prone to heartburn or acid reflux. The gold standard that doctors recommend for people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is to raise the head of the bed with six- to eight-inch tall blocks. Extra pillows just won’t cut it according to “Effect of Bed Head Elevation During Sleep in Symptomatic Patients of Nocturnal Gastroesophageal Reflux”—a study published in the Journal of  Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2012—because they may only lift the head and shoulders. Besides, you might just roll off the pillows in your sleep.
If you’re just looking for relief from an overfull stomach, though, and you don’t want to break out the wood blocks, try sleeping on your left side, which is considered the best sleeping position for digestion. Just be sure not to lie on your right side. A major study found that reflux was significantly worse in healthy subjects when they lay on their right sides rather than their left.
Researchers fed 10 subjects sausage-and-egg biscuits and coffee, then had half of them lie on their left sides and half on their right. The latter group suffered more acid exposure and more episodes of reflux. The takeaway? Next time you overindulge just before bed, try lying on your left side. Just don’t forget that pillow between your knees.

Best Sleeping Positions for Pregnancy

Expecting mothers develop sleep disorders frequently, which isn’t completely surprising, considering the vast range of hormonal, physical, and emotional changes that accompany pregnancy. Sleeping in the best position is, again, one factor among many. If poor sleep is routinely affecting your quality of life during pregnancy, you’re best off speaking with your OB-GYN.
That said, the American Pregnancy Association says sleeping on your back is one sleeping position you should definitely avoid during pregnancy since it can cause a decrease in both maternal and and fetal circulation. They also advise against sleeping on your stomach, because, well, you’re a little too big for that.
Citing the work of OB-GYN Glade Curtis, the Association says that the best sleeping position for pregnant women is on their left sides, keeping their legs and knees bent. Placing a pillow under the abdomen can improve comfort in the last trimester. If you have hip pain, again, try placing a pillow between your knees. Try to get as much sleep as you can now, mama!

Think You Might Have A Stomach Ulcer? Here’s What You Need To Know

It’s happening again. You finished lunch a little while ago and that painful burning sensation in your stomach is back. You pop a Tums and wait for relief, but you know that it won’t last and your heartburn will probably start up again soon. You start to feel queasy and hope you don’t need to run to the bathroom. Why does this keep happening after every meal?
You might have a stomach ulcer. There are more than half a million new cases of stomach ulcers every year, and around 25 million Americans will get an ulcer at some point during their lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This health issue is relatively common, but the good news is that ulcers have a high likelihood of being permanently cured.
So how do you know if your stomach pain is caused by an ulcer? HealthyWay asked Will Bulsiewicz, MD, MSCI, the board-certified practicing gastroenterologist behind the popular gut health Instagram account @theguthealthmd, to bust the common misconceptions about stomach ulcers. (Hint: Spicy food doesn’t cause them!) He also shared expert advice on diagnosing, treating, and preventing the disease. Here’s what you should know about stomach ulcers.

Understanding the Condition

There are many myths and misconceptions that swirl around when people talk about stomach ulcers. So let’s set the record straight, starting with the name.
“The term ‘stomach ulcer’ is something that people use liberally to refer to a peptic ulcer, which occurs in the stomach or in the first part of the small intestine, known as the duodenum,” says Bulsiewicz. “A peptic ulcer is basically a breakdown of the lining in the small intestine or stomach due to a disruption in the natural balance between inflammation and the barrier to inflammation that exists in the body.”
In other words, it’s a sore or hole in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. Ouch!
So what causes stomach ulcers? You’ve probably heard that spicy food can burn holes in your stomach lining or that a stressful lifestyle contributes stomach ulcers, but that’s not entirely true.
“It does make for an interesting story, though,” explains Bulsiewicz. “After the Germans bombed England in World War II, they found that the rate of stomach ulcers rose substantially, so that’s where the myth that stress causes stomach ulcers comes from. While there’s some truth to the concept of a stress ulcer (they’re common in patients who are critically ill with organ failure), it’s generally caused by a bacterial infection.”
That’s right—rather than a few months of heightened stress causing stomach issues, the Helicobacter pylori bacterium (commonly known as H. pylori) is actually responsible for around 90 percent of ulcers.
“Many people will carry H. pylori without showing any symptoms. There are theories that exist that we have evolved to have this bacteria and it’s protective, but it also disrupts defense mechanisms in the stomach and therefore causes ulcers in stomach or the first part of the small intestine,” says Bulsiewicz.
As for other causes of stomach ulcers, the main culprit can be found right in your own medicine cabinet: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. (Note: Acetaminophen, or Tylenol, is not an NSAID.)
“Long-term use of NSAIDs can break down the natural defense mechanisms in the stomach and small intestine and cause direct harm, wearing away the lining,” says Bulsiewicz. “I don’t love these medicines, because when someone’s having severe gastrointestinal bleeding, it’s often because they’ve been using too much of these medicines to treat arthritis and things like that.”
Stomach ulcers can also be caused by Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, a rare condition that causes the body to produce too much acid. Zollinger–Ellison syndrome occurs in only about 1 in every 1 million people and is more common among men between the ages of 30 and 50, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Your doctor can run tests to determine if you have Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.

Signs You Might Have a Stomach Ulcer

Everyone suffers from the occasional stomachache—it’s no fun, but it usually passes after a couple hours without cause for alarm. But what if the pain is recurring? Could it be an ulcer? What do stomach ulcers feel like?
“The classic indicator is pain in the upper part of the stomach in your midline, but not quite in the chest. It’s the epigastric area,” says Bulsiewicz.
The doctor goes on to explain that mealtime can influence when you feel the worst.
“If it’s a stomach ulcer, the pain happens right after eating. If the ulcer is in the small intestine, it will hurt two or three hours after a meal,” he added.
However, pain isn’t the only sign of a problem. Other stomach ulcer symptoms include nausea, getting full too quickly (a condition known as “early satiety”), and anemia. Abnormal vomit and stools, such as if they’re bloody or look like coffee grounds, can also be big warning signs.
“If you have severe abdominal pain or any of the other symptoms, you should go see your doctor,” warns Bulsiewicz. “Don’t wait until it worsens to ask what’s going on.”
Delaying treatment for a stomach ulcer could lead to potentially serious complications.
“It might erode all the way through the lining of your stomach or intestine and create a perforation. You’ll develop peritonitis and there’s be a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain. It’s also possible to develop an obstruction, where the ulcer causes a deformation of the tube, or lumen, of the intestine and food can’t get through,” says Bulsiewicz.
If you suspect you might have a stomach ulcer or another gastrointestinal issue, get in touch with your physician as soon as possible. Early treatment can help you avoid painful complications down the road. 

How to Get a Diagnosis

When it comes to any health issue, reading about symptoms on the internet should be used strictly for gathering background information. Only a medical professional can say for sure whether you have a stomach ulcer.
Generally, your doctor will start by checking for an H. pylori infection, which might indicate a stomach ulcer. They can look for the bacteria through a stool, blood, or breath test.
You may also need to undergo an upper endoscopy, one of the best ways to diagnose a stomach ulcer, says Bulsiewicz. You’ll receive anesthesia, then the gastroenterologist will slip an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a light, camera, and tools to collect tissue for a biopsy) down your throat to look for sores.
“Once I’ve diagnosed it as an ulcer, I can administer a treatment during the procedure if medically appropriate. The endoscopy is the most direct test. It presents the least likelihood of missing an ulcer and it offers opportunity for treatment,” he says.
While used less frequently, a barium swallow can also help determine whether you have a stomach ulcer. This test involves swallowing a liquid with barium sulfate, which will coat the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract. Then the doctor will take a series of X-rays to watch the contrast and potentially spot an ulcer.
Your doctor will provide a recommendation on the best way to diagnose a stomach ulcer in your body.

Treating the Problem

Once your doctor confirms you have a stomach ulcer, he or she can begin making recommendations for treatment. The good news is that most stomach ulcer treatments are short and will help you feel better fast. Stomach ulcers are relatively common and easily cured with the right medical interventions.
“If you have H. pylori, the classic treatment is called a triple therapy. It’s a combination of two antibiotics—usually amoxicillin and clarithromycin—and a proton-pump inhibitor (or PPI), such as Prevacid, Nexium, and Prilosec, to reduce stomach acid,” says Bulsiewicz. “You’ll start to feel better in a few days unless you have a severe ulcer.”
Some doctors may treat a stomach ulcer with a histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonist, rather than a PPI, to help your body cut down on acid production. The exact combination of drugs, dosage, and duration of treatment will depend on your medical history and the severity of your stomach ulcer.
As with almost every drug, stomach ulcer treatments such as PPIs do come with the risk of side effects. However, Bulsiewicz says that PPIs are safe and effective for the treatment of stomach ulcers.
“Many of the studies people have seen reported in the news about PPIs and their risks are overblown. In general, we believe these medicines are very safe. While there are risks, taking the medicine for 4 to 8 weeks is going to be completely safe for most people,” he says.
Your doctor may also provide recommendations for treating stomach ulcers with natural remedies in addition to medical preventions. For example, Bulsiewicz says that in addition to a PPI, he’s used fiber and probiotics to treat ulcers. This approach fosters gut health and may help prevent future stomach ulcers.
Fiber, probiotics, and possibly fermented foods: These are things I believe in. What’s cool is that most things that contain fiber also have prebiotics, the food found in plants that feeds our gut microbiome and helps our body work the way it’s supposed to,” Bulsiewicz says.
Garlic and licorice root may potentially help heal stomach ulcers, but more research is required before they can be relied on as a natural treatment, adds Bulsiewicz.

Soothe with food.

What you put in your body can have a big influence on how you feel when you have a stomach ulcer. Bulsiewicz recommends eating a high-fiber diet (as long as you don’t have an obstruction) and limiting consumption of spicy and acidic foods.
“They can aggravate an ulcer. You should also avoid processed foods, which may impair healing of the ulcer,” he says.
It’s a good idea to lay off alcohol and smoking when you’re treating a stomach ulcer, Bulsiewicz cautions.
So what are the best foods to eat when you have a stomach ulcer? Stick with fresh, low-acid fruits and vegetables and lean meats. They’ll give your body the essential nutrients it needs during a time of healing. You may also consider eating homemade sauerkraut, which contains beneficial bacteria for your gut.

Stomach Ulcers and Pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are always heightened concerns about the impact health woes will have on the mother and the baby.
“Pregnancy may actually be protective when it comes to peptic ulcers, because increased progesterone levels from pregnancy lower stomach acid output and create more protective mucus. Nonetheless, ulcers can still happen and are more likely in those who smoke or who have a prior history of ulcer disease,” says Bulsiewicz, adding that if you think you might have a stomach ulcer while you’re pregnant, your doctor can perform an endoscopy—ideally during the second trimester—to make a diagnosis.
“There are safe medication options that could be used to treat the ulcer, such as the H2 receptor antagonists,” says Bulsiewicz.
Your doctor is the best source of information for diagnosis and treatment of a stomach ulcer during pregnancy.

Preventing Stomach Ulcers

Perhaps you’ve figured out that something else was the cause of your stomach pain (ate one slice too many at a pizza party? We don’t judge!), but now that you’ve read about stomach ulcers, you’re worried about getting one. How can you prevent it from happening to you?
“Be cautious with your use of NSAIDs. That’s what I see as the dominant controllable factor,” says Bulsiewicz.
He also recommends moderating the amount of alcohol you drink, quitting smoking, and eating a clean, healthy diet.
“Maximizing your consumption of fruits and vegetables and really doing your best to not consume processed foods is to everyone’s benefit,” says Bulsiewicz.

When Heartburn Has You Down: How To Deal With Acid Reflux During Pregnancy

“I had acid reflux so badly by the end of my twin pregnancy that I couldn’t lie down at all for the last six weeks,” says Kelly Smith, a mom of two in Minneapolis. “I ate Pepcid every couple of hours and ‘slept’ in a reclining treatment chair from my acupuncture practice. My stomach was so displaced that I could only eat three or four bites of food at a time (like every hour), and often had to choose between eating—since I was always starving (twins)—or drinking water because I had the thirst of a trillion deserts.”
Ah, pregnant life with acid reflux. Why is it so, so horrible? And what can you do about it?

What is acid reflux and what does it feel like?

A hot, burning feeling in your chest. The constant need to burp. A feeling of pressure around your throat. An inability to eat or drink without burning in your chest or the feeling of wanting to hurl: This is what acid reflux feels like. Unfortunately, it’s very, very common.
“Acid reflux woke me up in the middle of the night,” says Sarah Tucker, mother of one in Los Angeles. “I had to sleep propped up on a wedge pillow my husband called ‘the ski slope.’ Not comfy!”
“With my second pregnancy, I took so many Tums I started twitching and having charley horses multiple times a day, and still I got no relief,” says Ashley Patronyak, who lives in New York City with her two boys. “The nurse at my doctor’s office told me there were no other options and to take even more Tums, so I went to Dr. Google for a second opinion, then went to Duane Reade that same afternoon and bought the biggest box of Zantac they had.”
“I felt awful all the time, and didn’t want to eat anything because I thought it would make the sensation worse,” recalls Becky Weiss, a physician in LA. “The heartburn was worse at night and I tried not to eat too much at dinner because if I got into bed too soon afterwards, I would feel the acid in my chest.”

What causes acid reflux?

Acid reflux occurs when the acid in your stomach—which should stay in your stomach!—travels back up into your esophagus. This happens because pregnancy causes the body’s musculature, including the esophageal sphincter, to relax.
Acid reflux can be particularly bad if you lie down soon after a meal, and it occurs for two main reasons. The first is that your level of progesterone is much higher, which slows digestion down and makes you feel fuller faster. There’s also a basic anatomical reality to it: There’s a lot of pressure on your stomach.
“It’s both hormonal and structural,” explains Jocelyn Brown, a licensed and certified professional midwife in Los Angeles. “A woman can make all the lifestyle adjustments in the world, but sometimes they just have to ride it out, and it’s miserable.”
For some women, acid reflux is particularly acute in the first trimester, when hormones begin slowing digestion down (so that the fetus can absorb the nutrients in your food). For many women, though, acid reflux begins or noticeably worsens in the third trimester because of the baby’s size and its effect on your stomach’s ability to take in and digest food.

Will acid reflux hurt me or my baby?

The good news is that neither the acid nor the Tums hurt the baby, says Brown. But there is a risk for you: overdoing it on the antacids.
Women go to Tums because it’s easy and they are miserable, but antacids neutralize the hydrochloric acid in your stomach,” she explains. “When the drug wears off, the feeling of heartburn gets worse because your stomach actually needs acid to digest your food. As a result, your body will overproduce it.” This causes a vicious cycle.
Sometimes women have this reaction in 20 minutes—they’ll feel great and then instantly worse—or it’ll happen over the course of a few weeks. “If a woman is 39 weeks, I say, ‘pop all the Tums you want.’ But if she’s 24 weeks, I’m worried that the antacids will backfire over time and we look for another solution.”
Rachel Sinex Graves, MD, who works in family medicine and obstetrics in Portland, Oregon, agrees that lifestyle changes are always the first approach to treating acid reflux, but she doesn’t think women should suffer unnecessarily by staying away from medication: “There’s enough suffering in pregnancy,” she says. “Acid reflux can add one other thing that can really weigh on people. Women get depressed about their acid reflux! They can’t eat or drink anything, which makes them feel terrible.”
Graves also points out that Tums can be an incredibly useful tool for women who feel awful and assume it’s morning sickness. “If a woman is miserable—not sleeping, so uncomfortable she can’t eat; if she’s vomiting or gaining weight—she usually assumes she has morning sickness or hyperemesis, but it might just be acid reflux.”
There’s no harm in using Tums to make your life a little easier. Graves says that acid reflux usually goes away right after the baby is born, so taking something for six months to make your life manageable is not the same as taking Tums indefinitely for the rest of your life. One adverse effect it can have, however, is to make you constipated, which can exacerbate the reflux.

Tums don’t work for my acid reflux. Is there anything stronger?

“If women are munching on Tums several times a day, and still symptomatic, then I look at medications,” Graves explains. These medications come in two categories: histamine-2 (H2) blockers, like Zantac, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Nexium, Prilosec, or Prevacid, which should only be taken with a prescription.

Will acid reflux medications hurt my baby?

There is very little research on most matters related to medication and pregnant women because pregnant women are usually unwilling to enter a randomized control trial—no one wants anything terrible to happen to their baby!
“With all medication, we minimize use as much as possible and don’t use it if we don’t need it,” explains Graves. “But a woman’s level of suffering is really important to take into consideration. Maternal suffering is not good for baby either.” The research shows that if you’re taking a PPI for your acid reflux once a day so you can sleep, the potential for harm is very low.
A very recent study published in Pediatrics suggests that acid reflux medications—such as PPIs like Prilosec and Prevacid and H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) such as Pepcid and Zantac—can be linked to childhood asthma. “Overall, pregnant women who used PPIs and H2RAs were 45% more likely to have children with asthma than women who didn’t use these drugs during pregnancy,” the study concludes.
If you’ve been tossing back the Tums, don’t panic just yet: “Tums are just calcium carbonate,” explains Brown, “so they don’t fall into this category, but some of my moms will graduate from Tums to the PPIs and I can no longer say, ‘don’t worry about it!’”
Speak to your doctor before considering more intensive medication.

Reducing (or Preventing) Acid Reflux During Pregnancy

“What is magical for one woman might not work for another woman,” says Brown. “It’s a crapshoot.” As a result, there are a laundry list of things you can try before popping the antacids.

  • Avoid triggers in your diet, says Amanda Broomell, a certified holistic health coach. These include acidic citrus drinks (like orange juice and lemonade), carbonated beverages (even La Croix; sorry!), grains and processed foods (breads and cookies), tomatoes and tomato sauce, and anything with hydrogenated oil. It can also be helpful to avoid eating too much meat. Other triggers: chocolate (boo!), onions, garlic, mint, caffeine.
  • Instead, Broomell suggests, consume easy-to-digest foods: organic fruits and veggies, bone broth, and organic meat.
  • Avoid greasy, fried, or spicy foods. If you eat something spicy, pair it with a cooling food, like cucumbers, avocado, melon, or coconut.
  • Eat smaller portions. Remember Kelly with the twins? She could only eat a bite or two an hour. You may not be that desperate, but it’s best to go easy. The more food in your (already cramped) stomach, the harder it will be to digest it.
  • Get some protein in. Make sure you get protein in every meal—and even with snacks (almonds are a great one).
  • Chew, chew, chew. Broomell recommends chewing 30 to 40 times with every bite. It’s easier to process if the food has already turned to liquid when it gets to your stomach.
  • Suck on hard candies. Lemon and ginger can be especially helpful.
  • Chew gum. “I couldn’t go anywhere without Tums and Orbit gum,” says Megan Heuer, a mom of one in New York City. (For natural gum, we love Simply Gum.) This can be particularly helpful right after a meal.
  • Try drinking organic raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar (it must be organic, raw and unfiltered). Broomell suggests 1 tablespoon in a cup of water 10 minutes before a meal. “Apple cider vinegar supports the digestive system, has natural probiotics, as well as acids and enzymes that restore a natural pH,” she explains. Try it by itself for a week—just so you can be clear about whether it’s working—then add in other remedies over time so you can figure out what’s really working.
  • A digestive enzyme can be super helpful. It can boost the digestive process. We need hydrochloric acid to digest meat, and this can move that process along.
  • Take a probiotic. This can help maintain good gut flora, but there is some controversy over how effective it is for acid reflux in pregnancy because nothing can change the fact that you have an 8-pound baby pressing on your stomach! But there’s no harm in taking one. If it’s too costly, Graves recommends either eating good yogurt with active cultures or taking ¼ teaspoon of baking yeast.
  • Food relief: Try raw almonds, coconut water, aloe vera juice, ginger tea, fennel tea (steep for 10 minutes), and papaya.
  • Sleep propped up or on your left side. Stack pillows, or sleep in a La-Z-Boy if you have to. Lying on your right side actually positions the stomach higher than the esophagus, which can cause even worse heartburn.
  • Eat pickles! There’s a reason women often crave them, explains Brown. They are very acidic and help with digestion—so do all pickled foods. “A woman’s body usually craves what she needs in that moment,” she says. (Tell that to anyone who side-eyes you for your third chocolate shake of the week.)
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing. Wearing tight bras or waistbands that squeeze can also make acid reflux worse.
  • Breathe slowly and deeply. Focus on your breathing; you may be surprised by what breath exercises can do for you.
  • Go for a short walk after eating to stimulate the digestive system (exercising heavily after meals, however, may contribute to heartburn).
  • Try an herbal tea. Teas that contain even trace amounts of peppermint, chamomile, ginger, licorice root, and catnip can help the stomach lining repair itself and improve digestion.

Can I use essential oils for acid reflux during pregnancy?

Essential oils aren’t a cure for acid reflux, but Broomell says that they can help support healthy digestive functioning. “Essential oils are one component of overall lifestyle shift,” Broomell explains. “If people are consuming acidic food and drinks, it’ll be hard to slap on essential oils and feel great.”
You should always consult your doctor before using oils during pregnancy. Broomell advises women in the first trimester to stay clear of ingesting them, but even smelling or diffusing them can make a difference if you’re really suffering. The most powerful oils for digestion are ginger, cardamom, and peppermint. You want to dilute these with fractionated coconut oil (FCO)—1 drop of each oil in 4 to 5 drops of FCO—and you can apply them to the back of your neck, behind the ears, or inhale it.  
Dealing with acid reflux is never fun, but when you’re pregnant it’s even worse. Hang in there, mama. Soon you’ll have your sweet babe in your arms—and hopefully no more acid reflux to boot!

Think back to your last big night out on the town. Or a lunch date with your best friend. Or maybe just this morning before work. Did you stare at your clothes, thinking What the hell am I going to wear?
You’re not alone: Ask any woman and she’ll likely tell you that she too has stood in front of her full closet in a towel feeling overwhelmed by the lack of options. At some point, most of us have come to the realization that what’s hanging in the closet is out of style, out of season, the wrong fit, or downright not cute. Our shelves, drawers, and hangers might be full, but that hasn’t exactly solved the I have nothing to wear problem.
Your first instinct might be to go out and buy more clothes. But that’s what you’ve always done, and it isn’t working. A better solution might be to streamline what you do have.
Enter the capsule wardrobe.
A capsule wardrobe quite literally limits your options, but it also encourages you to only keep items that you truly love. With a smaller, carefully chosen clothing collection, you’ll never again be staring at piles of clothes thinking you have nothing to wear.
Capsule wardrobes don’t just make getting dressed each morning easier. They also cut down on clutter, reduce laundry (who wouldn’t love that?), and can even save you money in the long run.
Here is everything you need to know to build a capsule wardrobe—and why one might change your life.

Capsule Wardrobe 101: Here’s What You’re Getting Into

A capsule wardrobe is one that is built around a small number of essential clothing items—pants, skirts, dresses, and tops—that all coordinate, allowing you to build multiple stylish outfits (without having an excess of clothing items you’ve only worn twice).
“A capsule wardrobe is built with main quality pieces that can be mixed and matched with each other for ultimate use,” says Rayne Parvis, a Los Angeles-based style coach.
The exact number of items in your capsule wardrobe can vary a bit depending on your lifestyle, but to really get the benefits of going capsule wardrobe, Parvis recommends capping your collection at 35 items. If that small number gives you anxiety, remember it doesn’t have to include things like underwear, pajamas, or activewear. Instead, the focus of your capsule should be the clothes that you wear for most of the day, whether you’re an on-the-go office worker or a stay-at-home mom who leaves the house mostly to run errands or hit the gym.
The idea of a capsule wardrobe is nothing new. In fact, it’s been around since at least the 1980s, when West London boutique owner Susie Faux coined the term. At the time, Faux encouraged women to buy fewer items of a higher quality that they would wear more often. That’s a main tenet of modern-day capsule wardrobes.
In recent years the idea of capsule wardrobes has grown even more popular thanks to a cultural interest in minimalism, Parvis says. Blogs like Caroline Rector’s Unfancy and Courtney Carver’s Be More With Less encourage women to work with fewer clothing items and accessories.
Rector runs regular “10×10” challenges, during which she and her readers each create 10 outfits using just 10 items of clothing and wear them for 10 days. In 2010, Carver launched Project 333, which encourages people to create a capsule wardrobe of 33 items or less and to wear only those items for three months.
Although a capsule wardrobe encourages you to cut down on what’s in your closet, it also involves carefully crafting a collection of clothing items that flatter your shape and look great together.
“The goal is to buy less and wear your closet more, therefore saving you time, money, and stress of getting dressed,” Parvis says. So although you’re cutting back on options, the items you’re left with look great and are easy to match.

How to Build Your Capsule Wardrobe

Building a capsule wardrobe isn’t nearly as daunting as you might think, and it doesn’t need to be a complicated process. After all, you’re choosing a capsule wardrobe in order to simplify your life, not add stress.
Here are are three easy steps to get you started:

1. Evaluate what you have and get rid of anything that’s not working.

The first step to streamlining with a capsule wardrobe is to look at the clothes you already have. Completely empty your closet and dresser, and consider each item one by one. Ask yourself whether you like it—do you really like it or do you just want to like it? Do you wear it? No, really, do you wear it regularly? Or have you worn it once and never again?
Lili Morton, co-founder of FirstSeven, a corporate styling firm, says that it’s important to be honest and ruthless when evaluating what to get rid of and what to keep.
“If you don’t love it, it needs to go. If you haven’t worn it in a year, you probably don’t love it, so it should go. If it’s dated, worn, or doesn’t fit anymore, it needs to go,” she says.
It can be hard getting rid of pieces you used to wear; physical items can hold a surprising amount of sentimental value. Make like Marie Kondo and literally thank the items for serving their purpose, then sell or donate them so they can have a good life with someone else!
Pro Tip: Getting rid of things can be intimidating, so focus on the end goal of looking great. “It can be hard to let go of pieces, but I always ask my clients, what type of wardrobe do you want? Do you want to build an A+ wardrobe? You can’t build an A+ wardrobe filled with C- pieces,” Morton says.

2. Think about what your capsule wardrobe needs.

As Parvis says, “What’s in your capsule depends on your lifestyle.”
If you work in an office environment, you’re going to need more business clothing than casual options, for example. On the other hand, if you’re home with the kids you probably will need more laid-back, durable clothes like jeans and cotton tops.
Another thing to consider is what you’re most comfortable in. If you know you hate wearing heels, don’t include four pairs of them in your capsule wardrobe. If you feel better in pants than skirts, make sure to include an extra pair or two in the final list.
Finally, think about your shape as it relates to your style. Figure out what “flattering” means to you: Do you want to rock looser clothing à la normcore style, or are you more into the hourglass silhouette? Figure out what looks good on your body (as it relates to your personal style and preferences—not anyone else’s!) and evaluate accordingly.
Pro Tip: Style your capsule wardrobe for the season in order to incorporate the types of clothes that you’re most likely to wear. In the summer you might only have one sweater in the rotation, while in the cooler months you’ll certainly need more than that. Parvis says that tweaking your capsule wardrobe seasonally will keep you from getting bored.

“I love to change it up seasonally. You can keep some pieces in the rotation and bring new ones in to keep your style fresh,” she says.

3. Build your capsule wardrobe.

Now comes the fun part: selecting the clothes that will make up your capsule wardrobe.
Begin by looking at what you’ve already got: the items from your closet cleanout that you love and wear often and that will help you meet your style goals.
Next, evaluate how the items will mix and match. It’s a good idea to focus on neutral colors since they look great and are easy to work with.
“Choose simple, quality, basic pieces in suits, pencil skirts, blouses, blazers, dark denims, sweaters, shoes, and accessories,” Parvis says. “Avoid anything that stands out too much like a huge bow, bold stripes, or crazy silhouette.”
That’s not to say you can’t sport colors or patterns in a capsule wardrobe; you just need to make sure they’re versatile enough to go with multiple pieces and that they’re not so eye-catching that people start wondering if it’s the only shirt you own.
The exact breakdown of your wardrobe is up to you. Unfancy recommends a capsule wardrobe of 37 items: nine pairs of shoes, nine bottoms, 15 tops, and four slots left over for dresses and jackets.
If you’re not very interested in shoes, you might like to incorporate scarves, sweaters, handbags or other items instead. In general, you’ll want more tops than bottoms, and a mix of formal and casual wear that fits your lifestyle needs.
If there’s anything you need but don’t already have, create a capsule wardrobe checklist and shop specifically for those items, keeping in mind how they will fit in with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. This is a great opportunity to shop intentionally. Take the time to find quality pieces that really fit your exact requirements to ensure your new purchases are things you’ll be loving for a long time.

You’re ultimately in control of your capsule wardrobe, so you can build it with whatever foundational pieces work for you, even if they’re a tad untraditional.
“For example, I love red,” Morton says. “I could add a red blazer to my wardrobe. Yes, that sounds bold, but I can wear it layered over a black (or white) sheath dress, with a blouse and black pants or pencil skirt and with jeans and a tee. There are four looks with that red blazer.”

Do I have to ignore trends?

For the trend-lovers out there, worry not. The foundations of your capsule wardrobe should be items that will work in the long run, but there’s also plenty of opportunity to incorporate trends.
If you’re into trends, add them in accent pieces versus the basic pieces,” Parvis says. “For example, polka dots are trending. You can add this fun print in a scarf, camisole, or clutch versus in a full suit or blazer.”

Capsules Wardrobes for the Whole Family

Adults aren’t the only ones who can benefit from capsule wardrobes. In fact, kids’ wardrobes are great places to play around with the idea of limited clothing. Lest you think we’re insane (kids are messy, after all), consider Mindy Wood, a blogger at Purposefully Simple, who built a capsule wardrobe for her two daughters.
Wood created a capsule wardrobe for herself and was so happy with the end result that she wanted to see how it would work for the littles. Her girls had a lot of clothes that were hand-me-downs or consignment purchases, which sometimes left them looking a bit disjointed.
“Their wardrobes started to look pretty strange, so I wanted to try and streamline it,” Wood says. “I don’t really care if they have mismatched clothes at times but at some point it’s too much to have so many things that don’t go together.”
She took a fairly laid-back approach to building a capsule wardrobe for her girls, but still saw the benefits.
“A kid’s capsule wardrobe isn’t going to look like an adult’s. They definitely need more clothes for spills, accidents, et cetera, but that’s okay,” Wood says. “The point of creating the capsule wardrobe, for me, was to put some order to their wardrobe and make it easier for them to dress themselves if they wanted.”
Now the girls, ages 3 and 6, have an easier time dressing themselves, and Wood deals with less laundry and mess.
“It makes life easier because the kids can dress themselves without my help and can still look somewhat put together,” she says.
She recommends that other parents try a capsule wardrobe for their kids, too. “There are no rules really: Just do what works for you, your kids, and your lifestyle.”

“I feel like I actually have more items, not less, which is both weird and wonderful,” Brennan says. “It’s probably because I only see the clothes I really love and I find that is enough.”
She says that since she began using a capsule wardrobe she is more fashionable and more open to experimenting with her clothes. “Building a capsule wardrobe helped me hone my fashion sense and focus on items and a few looks I really, truly love and feel comfortable and confident in,” she says. “When it comes time to replace an item, I may choose to go in a different direction or try a shape or color that I might have veered away from in the past.”
Morton says she sees that often. “When you have a capsule wardrobe and start wearing items that make you feel amazing and you start creating your own looks using these items, your confidence will build. You’ll feel good in what you’re wearing and that will shine through in your daily routine and interactions with colleagues and clients,” she tells us. “This newfound confidence often gives my clients that little push they needed to try new things.”

Ann Hnatyshyn, head roaster at East Van Roasters (also in Vancouver), suggests thinking about what it is you enjoy about coffee drinks to begin with. “When buying coffee for home, the first thing to keep in mind is what flavor profile you’re looking for. It could be something balanced with lots of chocolate flavor notes, or maybe you enjoy a stronger bitter flavor so you can enjoy cream and sugar in your morning coffee. You can also seek out a coffee with more floral and sweet notes.”
Once you’ve identified the flavors you love, it’s time to look at the roast profile of different types of coffee beans.

The Roast With the Most

A coffee bean’s flavor profile is directly linked to the length of time it was roasted. Once you figure out the best roast for your tastes, it becomes much easier to pick out coffee beans. Hnatyshyn says that in general, “Lightly roasted coffee normally has more acidity and sweetness. Medium roasted coffee will be less acidic with some sweetness and some bitterness. Dark roast tends to be more bitter.”
If in doubt, try describing the best cup of coffee you’ve ever had to your barista and let them take it from there. Many coffee shops will offer small sample bags of beans, giving you the chance to try them out before committing to a certain roast.

Price and Origin: Their Effect on Different Types of Coffee Beans

Spencer Viehweger, co-founder and co-owner of Matchstick Coffee, suggests paying attention to price points when exploring different types of coffee beans. “Various price points typically have a flavor spectrum as well. There are many fantastic espresso-style coffees that can be purchased for around $15 to $18 a bag. They won’t have the nuance of the top end stuff, but they can still be delicious. If you’re looking for notes of raspberry or sugarplum, I would expect to pay between $20 and $25 dollars for a premium filter-style coffee.”
Viehweger says that in addition to roasting time, the geographical origin of the coffee beans has an impact on the flavors of different types of coffees. “I would also experiment with different growing regions, learn about their unique flavor profiles, and find what best appeals to you! Kenyan coffees are generally very jammy and acidic, Ethiopian coffees are generally quite tropical and floral, and Latin American coffees are typically nutty and chocolatey.”

Get the right kind of grind.

Whether you’re using a French press, a drip coffee maker, or a stovetop or electric espresso maker, it’s important to choose the right grind for the job. As a general rule, Hnatyshyn says, “If you have a home espresso machine then you have to make sure that the grind size is finer compared to a drip filter coffee machine or a French press, which will be a coarser grind size.” Cold brew and Turkish coffee also demand a specific grind, so make sure to check with a barista or coffee roaster if you’re feeling unsure.

Coffee vs. Espresso: What’s the difference?

There is a major difference between drip coffee and espresso—and it’s all about how the coffee beans are ground and treated as a beverage is being made. Beans that have been ground to make espresso are extremely fine, while drip coffee grounds are coarser in texture.
When it comes to actually making your beverage of choice, espresso is made in much smaller amounts than drip coffee. The process involves very quickly forcing extremely hot water through coffee grounds that have been tightly packed into an espresso maker. Drip coffee, on the other hand, is made by slowly filtering a larger amount of water through loosely packed coffee grounds. Although espresso has a stronger taste and darker appearance than coffee, a typical serving size actually contains less caffeine than that of drip coffee. A 2-ounce shot of espresso contains 80 mg of caffeine, whereas a 12-ounce cup of drip coffee contains 120 mg of caffeine.

For the more serious home baristas, a countertop espresso maker with a milk-foaming attachment will allow you to make almost any type of coffee drink in your own kitchen.

Although all different types of coffee drinks are readily available at coffee shops and cafes, it’s fun to try to replicate your favorites at home. Follow these instructions carefully, but don’t put too much stress on yourself in terms of trying to achieve perfect ratios of espresso or coffee to milk. It takes baristas months of practice to achieve the results you’re used to at your local coffee shop. Above all else, have fun making and enjoying different types of coffee drinks in the comfort of your own home!

  1. 1. Cappuccino

    Made with ⅓ espresso, ⅓ steamed milk, and ⅓ foam on top, cappuccinos are traditionally served in smaller 6- or 8-ounce servings (although many coffee shops in North America sell larger versions).
    To make a cappuccino at home, carefully pour ½ cup of steamed milk over 2 shots of espresso in a small cup, being careful to hold the foam back until all the liquid milk has been used. Spoon the remaining foam carefully over the espresso and milk, then add a sprinkle of unsweetened cocoa or cinnamon to taste.

    A mocha (also known as a caffè mocha or a mocaccino) is an espresso and steamed milk–based coffee drink with the addition of chocolate in the form of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup. Mochas can be made with milk, dark, or white chocolate and are sometimes topped with whipped cream and garnished with shaved chocolate pieces.
    To make a traditional caffè mocha at home, you’ll need a single shot of espresso (or make it a double if you’re craving the extra caffeine) and 1 cup of steamed milk. Vigorously mix the hot espresso with 3 tablespoons of sweetened cocoa powder or 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup until completely emulsified. Carefully pour the steamed milk over the espresso and chocolate mixture, using a spoon to dollop the foamed milk on top.

    To make Turkish coffee you’ll need very finely ground coffee. You can have your local coffee roaster grind it or you can buy it pre-ground. Made with sweetened black coffee, Irish whiskey, and heavy cream, this is one coffee drink reserved for special occasions.     To make Irish coffee at home, begin with hot black coffee that has been sweetened with brown sugar, using about 2 teaspoons of sweetener per glass.     Of all the different types of coffee drinks available, a glass of iced coffee is the ultimate thirst-quencher. With a negligible calorie count (a single cup of unsweetened black iced coffee comes in at less than 5 calories), this coffee drink can easily be made at home, which is a plus for your wallet and your waistline. While you can make iced coffee from hot brewed coffee, the results are much tastier if you use the cold brew method. How come? Taking the time to brew the beans in cold water prevents the finished product from being overly bitter or acidic. For this same reason, the coffee beans should be coarsely ground to prevent any bitter flavors from developing (this also prevents excess sediment from settling on the bottom of your jug or container).
    To make your own cold brew iced coffee, use a ratio of ¼ pound of coarsely ground coffee beans to 4 cups of cold water. Using a French press or an iced coffee maker, steep the coffee grounds for 12 to 24 hours before removing. Using the cold brew as a concentrate, pour over ice and add cold water in a ratio of 1:1. Top with milk, cream, and/or simple syrup.

Do You Have Postpartum Depression? Here's What To Watch Out For

Rachel Cannon doesn’t wait for a pregnant woman to deliver her baby to start looking for signs of postpartum depression. Like most practitioners in her field, the Boston-based OB-GYN and instructor at Boston University begins screening for postpartum depression before a woman is anywhere near the postpartum period.
She wants to know if her patients have a history of depression or anxiety. She asks what their support system is like. She makes inroads at every prenatal visit.
Cannon isn’t trying to police the thoughts of moms-to-be, and she’s not being judgmental. She is trying to treat postpartum depression before it starts. What’s more, she’s aware that just 14 percent of postpartum depression sufferers actually seek and receive treatment in America, an unfortunate reality that comes down to a multitude of factors—from moms’ fear of judgment and recrimination to societal attitudes that make asking for help a taboo for hundreds of thousands of women every year.
For new parents in America, the fight for postpartum depression treatment isn’t just one of awareness. Moms need to feel safe recognizing the symptoms in themselves and to feel secure saying, “hey, I need a little help.”
Whether you’re expecting a baby soon or already delivered…if you’re wondering what’s part and parcel of the life changes that come with bringing a new one into the world and when it’s time to put up the white flag, here’s what the doctors say.

Postpartum Depression or Just the Baby Blues?

If you had a dime for everyone who told you that the days after you welcome a child are different, you’d be living it up like Bill Gates by now. But guess what: All those clichés that come at you during pregnancy come at you for a reason. You might as well be Dorothy waking up in Oz after you give birth.
Your life has just changed. Your body has been through the wringer. And your new baby has no idea how to do much of anything without you, save for sleeping and sounding out a cry-fueled alarm that they’re hungry, tired, or have a diaper full of yuck.
So it stands to reason that you might feel a little down and out in the days after having a baby, and that’s perfectly okay, Cannon says.
“Every woman, her life is going to change,” she notes. “Her sleep, her appetite, her libido is going to change, and that’s normal.”
And with all that change comes a plummet in mood. The American Pregnancy Association estimates that anywhere from 70 to 80 percent of new moms have these feelings, which usually hit them within a week of birth. You might feel tired. Weepy. Anxious. Unmoored. Usually dubbed the “baby blues,” this period of feeling very un-you doesn’t necessarily mean you have postpartum depression.
It could just mean you’re a new mom trying to figure out a whole new life, and those feelings will go away as you adjust to your new routine.  
So how do you know if you have postpartum depression? It’s when the symptoms of the baby blues stick around that you need to seek an evaluation by your doctor for something more serious.

How to Know if It’s Something More: Diagnosing Postpartum Depression

For 1 in 7 women, the baby blues don’t end, at least not without help. They still feel down and out of sorts well past their baby’s arrival, even as they fall into a routine of diapering and feeding and swaddling. For some, the feeling won’t even show up right after baby’s born. Postpartum depression can begin to rear its ugly head as long as three or even six months after baby’s arrival.
But before they can get help, many women face a host of misinformation that they need to wade through. In one BabyCenter poll, 77 percent of women confessed that they thought having postpartum depression meant you were a risk to your child’s safety.
It’s a myth perpetuated by alarmist headlines about desperate moms who have hurt their babies. And sadly it does happen. But causing harm to your baby or yourself is just one of the possible symptoms, and it’s one that’s experienced by fewer women than other issues that are still difficult for moms, such as insomnia or anxiety. No matter how minor you may feel your issues are, they are absolutely worth a follow-up with your physician.
The truth is, if you’ve gone two weeks with any of the following symptoms of postpartum depression (as outlined by the National Institutes of Health) it’s time to make that call:

  • Feeling sad, hopeless, empty, or overwhelmed
  • Crying more often than usual or for no apparent reason
  • Worrying or feeling overly anxious
  • Feeling moody, irritable, or restless
  • Oversleeping or being unable to sleep even when the baby is asleep
  • Having trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
  • Experiencing anger or rage
  • Losing interest in activities that are usually enjoyable
  • Suffering from physical aches and pains, including frequent headaches, stomach problems, and muscle pain
  • Eating too little or too much
  • Withdrawing from or avoiding friends and family
  • Having trouble bonding or forming an emotional attachment with the baby
  • Persistently doubting her ability to care for the baby

Not sure if you fit the bill? Many doctors use the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale as an assessment tool, and the questions are available online. Although the test should not be used to self-diagnose, the 10 questions can help you make sense of what you’re feeling.
If you’ve had thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby, it’s particularly important that you don’t wait to make that call, Cannon says. You may be experiencing something called postpartum psychosis. Although it’s much rarer than postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis is the leading cause of maternal death in a baby’s first year. Postpartum psychosis can result in complete psychosis, cognitive impairment, and grossly disorganized behavior. The good news is, as with postpartum depression, there is treatment—but a mom and/or a loved one has to identify the problem and get her help.

The Risks of Postpartum Depression

The postpartum depression symptom list is a long one, and it’s one that many moms say makes them feel inadequate and scared even to broach the topic of postpartum depression with their healthcare providers.
For many, it’s something they’ve never felt before. For half of all postpartum depression sufferers, this is the first time they’ve ever experienced these feelings, which can quickly feel like a ding on their brand-new parenting record.
But postpartum depression isn’t a mom’s fault. It doesn’t mean she’s failing or that she’s ill equipped to be a parent.
It comes down to our own bodies and how they’re affected by pregnancy and motherhood, says Mayra Mendez, PhD, a licensed psychotherapist and program coordinator for intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health services at Providence Saint John’s Child and Family Development Center in Santa Monica, California.
“Postpartum depression is a condition resulting in emotional dysregulation impacted by hormonal and chemical imbalance associated with pregnancy,” Mendez says. “The condition impairs decision making, interferes with perceptions, [and] may impair relationships and disrupt daily living routines.”
In that way, postpartum depression is much like clinical depression. Moms who struggle with postpartum depression show signs that are markedly similar to those of non-parents with depression. But a number of scientists surmise that postpartum depression differs from classic depression in large part because of the hormones that take control of a mom’s body. Although a pre-pregnancy depression diagnosis will increase a mom’s risk of developing depression postpartum, some moms have no history of depression and after treatment never experience symptoms again.
If you’re feeling like you need a little help—or a loved one has picked up on the cues—you can start at your OB-GYN’s office. And there’s no need to wait for your six-week postpartum checkup. Call your doctor’s office and explain that you’d like a postpartum depression screening.
Regardless of whether you’re feeling postpartum depression symptoms, the experts maintain that risk factors rest largely on genetics and societal factors.
Women who have a history of depression are at higher risk than their peers, as are moms who deliver a pre-term baby, moms who lack a support system, and moms who are under other undue stressors during pregnancy or in the postpartum period. Some science even indicates that women who give birth during the winter and spring months are at higher risk than those who have summer and fall babies.
Although exact causes have yet to be determined, doctors like Cannon keep a keen eye out for moms who are expressing anxious feelings during pregnancy, as postpartum depression is not singular to the days after a woman gives birth. Symptoms are as likely to crop up during pregnancy or even months after a baby’s arrival.

Help for postpartum depression is on the way.

It’s because of this that postpartum depression treatment may begin well before the postpartum period, especially for women who come into pregnancy with a previous mental health diagnosis.
As many as 20 percent of women experience depression during pregnancy, and it’s been linked with adverse obstetric outcomes such as low birth weight and premature birth.
That alone could be reason enough to remain on an antidepressant for the nine months of pregnancy, but doctors have also found that a pre-pregnancy depression diagnosis is one of the leading indicators that a mom may suffer from postpartum depression. These days that’s enough to leave the barn door wide open on the topic, with doctors weighing a mom’s well-being against unknown risks to her fetus.
Although it was once customary for women to suspend taking antidepressants during pregnancy, an increasing number of doctors advise moms to stay the course if they feel they need the medicine in their system.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of data,” Cannon says of the safety of antidepressants for moms-to-be.
But what data they do have indicate that some formulations of medications are safer than others, and your OB-GYN may suggest a change to a specific medicine. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests that “the use of a single medication at a higher dosage is preferred over multiple medications, and those with fewer metabolites, higher protein binding, and fewer interactions with other medications are also preferred.”
And while studies continue to present a variety of factors for moms, recent research has shown that fears that antidepressants may hike a child’s autism risk are unfounded, as are fears that it will cause attention deficit disorder.
If you’re debating whether to start (or restart) antidepressants during pregnancy, be aware that antidepressants may need to be started at 36 weeks of pregnancy to get adequate blood levels in a woman’s system to ward off uncontrollable emotions once the baby is born.
That said, antidepressants aren’t the only tools in a mom’s arsenal if she’s fearing she may develop postpartum depression. Sherry Ross, an OB-GYN at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, suggests adding visits with a therapist to your prenatal plans if you have concerns, as they can not only help you take control of your emotions during pregnancy but also help craft plans for the postpartum period. They’ll also suggest how other important people in your life—from a friend to a sibling to a partner—can provide you support.
“It’s important to establish a support team who will help you be successful avoiding the dark days associated with depression,” Ross notes. “The team should include your partner, therapist, and healthcare provider. Women suffering from this type of depression need to acknowledge and be communicative on how they are feeling and use their support team regularly.”
If you’ve already given birth when you start to experience issues, you may be in new territory, but it’s never too late to get help.
Symptoms for postpartum depression may crop up as long as six months after a woman gives birth, but treatment is out there.
“Symptoms associated with postpartum reactivity are usually temporary and responsive to treatment,” Mendez says. That treatment can include cognitive or behavioral therapy with a therapist and/or medication.
For moms who are considering breastfeeding, there’s even good news: Studies on moms with postpartum depression found that some antidepressants are safe for breastfeeding. What’s more, research on moms who stopped taking antidepressants versus those who stayed on the meds showed a direct link between staying on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and extended breastfeeding.
