“There is a new consumer who is caring and educated and chooses what she puts in her body, and she chooses what she’s wearing. Excess consumerism doesn’t resonate with her. She looks for the right pieces, quality pieces. The root of all of this is education and getting the information out there to learn what impacts all of us,” says Nancy Taylor, CEO and co-founder of eco-chic brand époque évolution. Luxe, Versatile Leisure

Function ranks high this summer. We’re leading incredibly busy, full, and productive lives. In one day, women can go from the office to the gym to a night out, and we want to be comfortable the entire time. Right now there is a major need for pieces that can transfer easily from event to event.

In keeping with the comfort movement, a sub-trend in fashion is the throwback to the ’90s. Wearing basics, like t-shirts and denim, allows women to amp up the accessories and show off their personality. “Summer 2018 fashion has a very ’90s feel,” says Beau Dunn, founder of Beaus Babes. “People are wearing what they want and what makes them feel good.”

Maker Movement

“This summer, the ‘maker movement’ will continue to bring human-scale production back into mainstream fashion,” says Laura Hertz, co-founder and CEO of Gifts for Good. Gifts for Good is a marketplace for products made by cause-based enterprises. Their gifts work to expand the reach and impact of more than 40 nonprofits and social enterprises in 19 states and 65 countries.
With that, a growing number of products will now be hand-signed by the person who made them or accompanied by a photo or personal story of the maker.

What You Need To Know About Pitocin Induction

By the time Emily Theys got to 41 weeks pregnant with her first child, the baby was showing no signs of coming out. Theys was only a couple of centimeters dilated and not fully effaced, and her doctor predicted that her baby was on the bigger side (while Theys has a smaller frame). An induction was ordered. On the morning of the induction, the doctor started the Pitocin drip at 7 a.m.
You may have heard of Pitocin inductions—and horror stories and tales of success alike—but before you agree to a Pitocin induction, it’s important to know what Pitocin is and how it can affect your labor and birth.

What is Pitocin and how does it work?

Pitocin is the synthetic form of oxytocin, the naturally occurring hormone thought to control—at least in part—uterine contractions (in addition to being the “love hormone”!).
Pitocin works by causing the uterine muscles to contract periodically, causing the contractions required for vaginal delivery.
Pitocin is administered through an IV and is increased gradually until the patient is in labor, explains Sara Twogood, MD, an OB-GYN and assistant professor at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. The dose is usually increased every 30 to 60 minutes.
The dosage often varies from woman to woman: “Some women will need a very little dose and some will need the maximum dose,” explains Twogood. “We can’t predict that ahead of time. I usually tell women that with their first baby, we anticipate delivery about 24 to 36 hours after the induction starts. For women with their second, third, fourth babies, the induction process is usually a lot faster.”
The fetal heart rate, uterine contractions, and patient are monitored to ensure the baby is tolerating the contractions and the dose is adjusted as needed. (That said: Pitocin won’t work unless your cervix is favorable—meaning you have a relatively high Bishop Score and your cervix is soft and effaced.)

When Theys’ Pitocin induction started, she was immediately hooked up to a monitor. By the middle of the afternoon her water broke. Although she was having contractions—she could see them on the monitor—she couldn’t feel anything, despite not having an epidural.
She’d expected to endure the Pitocin with no additional drugs (“I have a high pain threshold!”), but soon it became unbearable. She kept at it by watching the monitor so she could see when a contraction was coming. “It helped because I could see when it was going to end. But soon they became really unbearable, like sharp lightning pains to my gut and through me. I was doubled over, clenching onto something.”
Over the next few hours, with the Pitocin turned down, Theys never dilated to more than 9 centimeters and, 24 hours after her water broke, she was rushed into an emergency c-section.

Theys is far from the only one who’s been induced with Pitocin only to end up in the operating room. A 2004 study showed that of over 1,600 women who had Pitocin used either to induce labor or to augment spontaneous labor, the former group had a higher-than-average c-section rate.
However, according to Twogood, the main reason Pitocin is associated with an increased risk for c-sections has more to do with the indication for Pitocin than the Pitocin itself, assuming Pitocin is being used safely. In other words, Pitocin is used to augment labor when it is is not progressing as expected.
“Labor not progressing as expected is associated with an increased risk for a cesarean,” she says. “Using Pitocin in this scenario can help decrease the need for a cesarean. I think Pitocin sometimes gets a bad reputation, but looking at it from this perspective can be helpful.”
Rosemary Dardick, mom of 3-year-old Ella, in L.A., was administered Pitocin—and it did lead to a vaginal birth. Dardick was induced on her due date because she had started to show signs of preeclampsia; her induction process started with misoprostol, which barely did anything. The next day her doctors tried to induce labor with a balloon (also known as a Foley bulb)—a procedure she wound up enduring twice.
“Those were awful from start to finish,” she says. “They hurt while they were being inserted and the first one hurt coming out too. The second one worked faster than the first. Ella was sunny side up and it wasn’t clear if she was going to be able to turn herself around.”

After receiving Pitocin, however, Dardick’s contractions progressed very quickly. “Whereas before I would mainly be able to tell I was having a contraction by looking at the monitor, I definitely felt them after the Pit,” she says. “The epidural was awful and I still have lingering effects from it, but I can’t imagine laboring without it after the Pitocin.”
The dosage was turned up and down for Dardick, too. “They tried to labor me down for an hour or so Monday morning so I’d be able to rest for a bit, but after two days of prodding, Ella was suddenly ready to go immediately,” she says. “In fact, the nurse almost delivered Ella because the doctors couldn’t get to my room fast enough. So while the inducement lasted a long time, I was only in active labor for about 30 minutes. She’d turned herself around and was no longer sunny side up.”

Side Effects of Pitocin

Remember Theys’ horrific contractions? She wasn’t wrong that they were truly unbearable. “The main—and intended—effect of Pitocin is painful uterine contractions,” says Twogood. “It’s thought these contractions are more painful and stronger than spontaneous labor contractions, but this is clearly very difficult to study and know.”
In addition to extremely painful contractions, for some women, Pitocin can cause water retention. Other side effects may be skin flushing, fast heart rate, nausea, or vomiting. But Twogood is quick to point out that most women tolerate Pitocin very well.

Why Doctors Induce With Pitocin

“Inductions are usually recommended when the risks of continuing the pregnancy are higher than the risks of induction and delivery of the baby,” explains Twogood. This means that the baby is premature but continuing the pregnancy is too dangerous.
Some other indications include preeclampsia, chronic hypertension, gestational or pre-gestational diabetes, cholestasis of pregnancy, placental insufficiency, concern about fetal well-being or fetal growth restriction, low amniotic fluid, intrauterine infection, premature and/or prelabor rupture of membranes, twins, or going past your due date.
Many doctors rely on other medications or methods to induce labor before getting to Pitocin. The most common ones? Cervidil, transcervical balloon catheter, misoprostol (or Cytotec), and rupturing the membranes. “Membrane sweeping, nipple stimulation, and castor oil may help, and I use these techniques when we are trying to coax spontaneous labor,” Twogood says, “but they are not as effective as the other techniques so I don’t rely on them solely when induction is medically indicated.”

Risks of Pitocin Induction for Mom

You can’t move around.

Once on Pitocin, you have to stay in bed and be strictly monitored, which means no more wandering around, sitting on a birthing ball, or any of the other laboring techniques you may have learned.

You can’t eat anything.

This is because you risk asphyxiation if you need an emergency c-section—which requires going under anesthesia.

It might not work.

According to the Mayo Clinic, 75 percent of inductions end in a vaginal delivery—which means that 25 percent end in emergency c-sections, like Theys’.

Too strong contractions can tear the uterus.

This is more of a problem for women who are opting for VBACs (vaginal birth after c-section).

Risks of Pitocin Induction for Baby

Some babies don’t react well to the intense contractions that come along with Pitocin, which can lower their her heart rates, sometimes necessitating an emergency c-section.
As for other effects on the baby after birth, Twogood says, “Pitocin does cross the placenta and may have similar effects as in the mother, but that is rare. Newborns to mothers who received Pitocin during labor are not treated or evaluated differently than newborns who were not exposed, and there’s no evidence or link to adverse neonatal outcomes.”

Pitocin Use After Delivery

Sometimes the uterus won’t stop bleeding after birth, so Pitocin is used to stop the bleeding by “squeezing down on the raw blood vessels exposed as the placenta is released.”

Pitocin and Autism: Is there a link?

According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, there is no causal link between the Pitocin and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A document endorsed by the Society for Maternal–Fetal Medicine states thatalthough the cause of ASD is unclear, it demonstrates a strong genetic predisposition and multifactorial influences. A wide variety of exposures, including many perinatal factors, have been linked to ASD but the suggested associations in many cases are weak, inconsistent, or both among studies, and cannot be equated with a cause and effect relationship

Psoriasis Treatments: A Guide To Natural And Mainstream Options

Something that looks like a rash might not seem like cause for alarm, but psoriasis is a chronic disease that needs to be diagnosed by a medical professional. Although there is currently no cure for psoriasis, there are a number of conventional and at-home psoriasis treatments out there that can make living with the disease a little easier.
Psoriasis is a genetic, autoimmune, inflammatory condition, in which your skin cells divide too quickly and do not shed quickly enough, creating inflamed, itchy, thick, white, scaly plaques, most classically on the scalp, elbows, and knees,” says Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and a clinical instructor at the University of Southern California.
Psoriasis is a chronic disease, and while it can’t be cured, it can be managed. “Psoriasis is a lifelong disease that can wax and wane but usually does not resolve completely or forever,” says Shainhouse. “Many of our newer medications are able to achieve a 90 to 100 percent skin clearance while [the person is] on the medication, but it is not a cure.”
Fortunately, thanks to a number of psoriasis treatments, the symptoms can be managed. Here’s what you need to know about treating psoriasis.

What causes psoriasis?

“The causes of psoriasis are not completely understood, but it is thought to be an autoimmune disease, which means that your body’s defense—your immune system—is overactive and actually working against itself,” says Jeanette Jacknin MD, a holistic dermatologist specializing in topical cannabinoids for skin disorders. “One-third of psoriasis patients have a family history of the disease, so there also appears to be a genetic component for the disease.”
Even if you are genetically predisposed to carry psoriasis, you might or might not get it. There are often certain factors trigger the psoriasis, Shainhouse says. These triggers might cause the first outbreak or aggravate the existing symptoms of your psoriasis.
Stress is another potential trigger, according to the scientific research. Jacknin mentions that severe stress often precedes the first emergence of psoriasis and 70 percent of flare-ups.
Other potential triggers include skin infections and injuries to the skin, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. Even a small pinprick can trigger or aggravate psoriasis, a reaction called the Koebner phenomenon. The Koebner phenomenon could also trigger psoriatic arthritis (more on that later).
In addition to having a number of triggers, there are a number of different types of psoriasis, categorized by where and how they appear on the body.

Types of Psoriasis

Guttate Psoriasis

Guttate psoriasis is characterized by a “sudden eruption of small, pink, scaly spots all over the trunk,” Shainhouse says, adding that the “trigger” for guttate psoriasis is often strep throat: “for some reason, the body recognizes strep antigen as psoriasis and turns it on.”

Plaque Psoriasis

Also known as psoriasis vulgaris, plaque psoriasis is the most common type, accounting for 80 percent to 90 percent of psoriasis cases. The American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD) notes that plaque psoriasis is accompanied by a scaly, silver, thin layer covering the skin and a thick buildup of plaque, usually on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.

Inverse Psoriasis

Most commonly found in the underarms or groin, Shainhouse says, inverse psoriasis occurs where hair touches skin. Skin will appear raw and it will feel swollen and sensitive.

Pustular Psoriasis

Commonly appearing on the hands and feet, pustular psoriasis includes the development of pus-filled bumps accompanied by red, swollen skin, according to the AAD. This type of psoriasis can be extremely painful.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis

A rare but serious and life-threatening form of psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis involves large patches of red, raw-looking skin covering the body. This is accompanied by chills, a fever, and flu-like symptoms. This is usually developed by people who have another kind of psoriasis.

Generalized Pustular Psoriasis

When pus-filled bumps and scales appear all over the body and not just on the hands and feet, it could be generalized pustular psoriasis. Again, this is a rare but life-threatening form of psoriasis. It’s often accompanied by flu-like symptoms.

Nail Psoriasis

Nail psoriasis is frequently accompanied by discoloration of the nails, tiny dents or pits in your nails, and blood or build-up in the nail bed, according to the AAD. The nails might come away from the skin.

Conventional Psoriasis Treatments

If you have psoriasis, it’s most likely plaque psoriasis, which is manageable. But it’s important to keep an eye out for any symptoms of the more serious forms of psoriasis described above. The psoriasis treatments prescribed by your healthcare provider will depend on the type of psoriasis you’re experiencing.

If you have a flaky, itchy rash that doesn’t go away, contact a medical professional, says. “You should see a dermatologist to discuss treatment options and long-term management,” she advises. “Once you understand your skin disease and know which treatments work for you, you can treat flares at home as needed and see your dermatologist when you need help.”
Depending on the severity of your skin and whether or not you have systemic symptoms, including psoriatic arthritis, your doctor will prescribe topical treatments or even oral or injectable medications,” Shainhouse explains.
Shainhouse says that there are a number of topical psoriasis treatments. You might be prescribed a vitamin D analogue topical cream, which slows down the production of new skin cells so that a thick scale won’t build up on your skin. Another option is a topical steroid or a topical tar, which helps to calm the inflammation, redness, and itch. A retinoid might also be prescribed; this helps to normalize cell division so that old cells can shed instead of building up.
Oral medications are usually prescribed for moderate to severe cases of psoriasis. “Oral medications reduce inflammation, reduce the immune response, and/or regulate skin cell production,” Shainhouse notes.
In the last decade, biologics (injectable medications) have become a popular psoriasis treatment. “A biologic is a protein-based drug that blocks the action of a specific type of immune cell (called a T cell) or blocks proteins in the immune system,” Jacknin says. “Patients on biologics have to be monitored closely for side effects.”
Keep in mind that the psoriasis treatment that is prescribed for you depends on the nature and severity of your symptoms and that it’s best to see a dermatologist about psoriasis to receive the necessary medication. Natural Psoriasis Treatments and Lifestyle Changes

Get a little sun.

Soaking up the sun—in moderation—might help with your psoriasis symptoms. “UV light is generally a no-no in dermatology, since we know that too much can be associated with the development of skin cancer and melanoma,” Shainhouse says. “However, it has an anti-inflammatory effect in psoriatic skin and is a very useful option for reducing skin disease/symptoms.”

Keep your skin from drying out.

Dry skin can aggravate the symptoms and discomfort associated with psoriasis. You can prevent dry skin by staying hydrated, avoiding very hot showers or baths, and using an air humidifier. Dry air dries your skin out, and an air humidifier helps to counter that issue.
Moisturizing regularly is also important—just ensure that your moisturizer is free of fragrance, as fragrance might irritate the skin more. Many people swear by using moisturizers containing Oregon grape for psoriasis. Also known as mahonia aquifolium, Oregon grape has been proven to be an effective and helpful moisturizer for people with psoriasis.
Another great moisturizing agent is aloe vera, Jacknin says. “Research shows aloe vera can help reduce the redness and scaling of psoriasis,” she says. Moisturizers containing 0.5 percent aloe are your best bet.

Soak in a tub.

Although psoriasis is itchy, scratching is a bad idea, as it can exacerbate the problem. “Rubbing and picking at the skin will actually worsen the spots,” Shainhouse says. “Psoriasis tends to develop in sites of skin trauma, including cuts and scratches.”
Instead, you’ll want to relieve the itchiness in another way. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends a number of natural treatments for itchiness. This includes soaking in the tub with a natural remedy such as oats. If you’re not keen on letting the oats float in your bathwater, put some in a clean sock or a small sachet, tie it closed, and let it soak in your bath.
A bath with Dead Sea salts or Epsom salts might also help relieve itchy skin, Jacknin says. It’s best to moisturize just after getting out of the tub to avoid drying your skin out, she adds.
Rinsing with apple cider vinegar can help reduce itchiness on your scalp, but avoid it if you have any open wounds.

Invest in CBD oil.

Plants related to the cannabis genus—including hemp and what we refer to as cannabis—contain cannabinoids, which have a range of health benefits. “Recent studies have suggested that cannabinoids may treat psoriasis by interfering in many of the inflammatory and immune pathways that exacerbate or trigger psoriasis,” Jacknin notes. She points to research that suggests cannabinoids may slow the development of skin cells called keratinocytes, which lead to psoriasis symptoms.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a type of cannabinoid, is particularly helpful for people with psoriasis, Jacknin says. This is because it has anti-inflammatory properties. “Based on the research, I believe that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can dramatically improve symptoms for many patients with psoriasis,” Jacknin says.
CBD comes in the form of ingestible oils and tinctures, which can be consumed orally, or in topical treatments. Hemp-derived CBD is legal throughout the United States. Jacknin suggests using third party–tested CBD oil derived from U.S.-grown hemp, such as MedTerra CBD oil.

Avoid alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

Research shows that drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes can aggravate psoriasis symptoms, so it’s best to avoid both alcohol and cigarettes.

Eat anti-inflammatory foods.

Certain foods have anti-inflammatory properties, and stocking up on these anti-inflammatory foods can help treat psoriasis. Anti-inflammatory foods include kale, ginger, sardines, and beets. Jacknin strongly recommends integrating turmeric into your diet: Eat it in your food or have some in pill form.
Some people have an inflammatory reaction to dairy, so consider avoiding dairy products and monitor whether your symptoms improve.
Remember that these remedies and lifestyle changes should complement your prescribed psoriasis treatment, not replace it. In other words, while there are measures you can take at home to reduce your psoriasis symptoms, it should primarily be treated by a healthcare professional.

Diseases Related to Psoriasis

Psoriasis is more than just skin deep—which is why you need to see a healthcare professional if you suspect you have it. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis are at risk for developing psoriatic arthritis, a kind of inflammatory arthritis that could cause permanent joint damage if left untreated for too long. If you have psoriasis, be on the lookout for sore, stiff, and swollen joints, as this symptom could be caused by psoriatic arthritis.
After being diagnosed with psoriasis by a dermatologist, you might have to be tested for these related diseases. Shainhouse says that a rheumatologist could address issues with psoriatic arthritis. “There should be communication and joint patient care with the primary care practitioner, because there are medical conditions that must be screened for and monitored in patients with psoriasis,” she adds.
If you have psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, you’re at greater risk for certain diseases. Studies have suggested that people with psoriasis are more likely to develop cancer, cardiovascular diseases, depression and anxiety, metabolic syndrome, liver disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, among other conditions. The reason that psoriasis is linked to those diseases isn’t fully understood, although it’s thought to be because of the chronic inflammation and compromised immune system associated with autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis.
Living with psoriasis isn’t easy, but a combination of the right medication and positive lifestyle changes can greatly improve the symptoms. Consult a dermatologist before pursuing any home remedies or natural psoriasis treatments, as psoriasis could be indicative of another serious disease or medical condition.

Let’s take the simplest green salad. First, I use the best greens I possibly can, and here in Sonoma County I have so many options. I like a mix of crisp lettuces, fresh herbs (Italian parsley, sorrel, thyme) and then season them with kosher salt. Next comes good olive oil, followed by a bit of acid (vinegar or citrus). Sometimes I’ll add a secondary dressing to this, typically something like fresh grapefruit juice, ground cardamom, salt, pepper and olive oil. People who try this call it the best salad they’ve ever had, but it all begins with fabulous greens.

She also cautions against using cheap, imitation ingredients, particularly balsamic vinegar. “I should add that I am not a fan of balsamic vinegar on everything. The cheap versions (which are not the real thing) are full of sugar and I rarely like to combine savory and sweet flavors. I think for the most part, balsamic vinegar degrades a dish,” she explains.
When it comes to oils and vinegars used in salad dressings or vinaigrettes, it’s best to buy the highest quality that you can afford and then use sparingly. Look for extra-virgin oil whenever possible (this means the oil has been extracted from the first pressing) and vinegar without added sugar or caramel coloring so that their flavors truly shine through in the salad.

Despite its misleading name, buttermilk (which is partly responsible for ranch dressing’s tangy flavor) is low in fat, and if you have leftover buttermilk it can be frozen in ice cube trays and used in smoothies and other recipes calling for buttermilk.
This recipe will keep in the fridge for up to three days. Just give it a quick stir before serving over a green salad, with coleslaw, or as a vegetable dip.

The proven health benefits of ginger are numerous, although it’s especially known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties (particularly in cases where the use of drugs isn’t advisable, such as during pregnancy or chemotherapy treatment).
Deeply flavorful and darker in color than soy sauce, tamari is a Japanese condiment that is usually gluten-free. (Check the label to make sure.) It can be found in the Asian or international foods section of most grocery stores or you can purchase this gluten-free version online.

The original recipe for Green Goddess salad dressing contained a rather alarming amount of mayonnaise that was mixed with anchovies, herbs, and scallions. Since then, the recipe has evolved to the point that it would probably be unrecognizable to its inventor, executive chef Philip Roemer of San Francisco’s Palace Hotel.
This version of Green Goddess dressing doesn’t contain mayonnaise but instead uses avocado and Greek yogurt for a creamy texture and rich mouthfeel. Avocados are packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which have been shown to reduce bad cholesterol and normalize blood pressure in animal studies.
Use Green Goddess dressing on butter lettuce and cucumber salads, on top of grilled salmon, or as an elegant dip for crudités. This recipe is at its best when made in a food processor, and the avocado and fresh herbs turn the dressing a gorgeous shade of green.

Mental Health Benefits Of Exercise That Make Every Sweat Sesh Worth It

Do you ever feel like you’re glowing from the inside out after you exercise? You may credit those “feel-good” hormones, known as endorphins, for the positive vibes. But endorphins aren’t the only reason we feel amazing after a sweaty gym or studio session. There are other mental health benefits of exercise that help us feel good long after we hop off the elliptical.
“I often ‘prescribe’ exercise to my clients,” says Allison Gervais, a licensed psychotherapist at Marin Mental Wellness in San Francisco. “I’ve found for the vast majority of my clients who incorporate some type of exercise into their weekly schedule that it can help lift a lot of mental health disorders.”
While a desire to stay in shape and look our best can motivate us to hit the gym, the biggest payoff to moving our bodies might just be the psychological benefits. Regularly getting our heart rates up and challenging our muscles helps us become happier, more resilient, and less stressed-out individuals.
Here are some of the most compelling mental health benefits of exercise that make every sweat sesh worth it, no matter how much motivation you need to summon to get moving.

1. Treat and Prevent Depression.

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health issues in the United States. While mental health professionals have long relied on antidepressants, talk therapy, or a combination of approaches to treat this disorder, they’ve started adding another option to their toolkits: exercise.

Science shows that one of the mental health benefits of exercise is its ability to help people cope with and eventually overcome depression. One study found that engaging in aerobic exercise three to five times a week was an effective treatment for people with mild to moderate depression.
“Exercise isn’t a substitute for antidepressants, but for someone with mild depression, exercise can help lift it,” says Gervais.
Not only does physical activity seem to be a valid treatment for depression, but one of the other mental health benefits of exercise is its ability to prevent this mood disorder. Researchers who tracked nearly 34,000 adults over the course of 11 years discovered that those who didn’t exercise were more likely to experience depression compared with participants who did any physical activity of any level of intensity for just an hour a week.
Another study that followed 11,000 people for up to 50 years found that people who were active in their adult years experienced fewer [linkbuilder id=”6798″ text=”symptoms of depression”] than those with more sedentary lifestyles.
When it comes to the mental health benefits of exercise, moving the body to treat and ward off depression makes it worth every last step you take.

2. Reduce feelings of anxiety.

Contrary to popular belief, you might actually be able to run away from your anxiety. But it won’t necessarily involve quitting your job or leaving your city. Instead, regular physical activity (whether that’s jogging, skiing, flowing on your yoga mat—whatever!) can help reduce the symptoms of anxiety.

“There are several techniques to treat anxiety, and one way is distraction,” says Gervais. “Going to the gym with some music can distract us from worry. Physical activity gives your brain a break that might allow you to think more clearly about a problem.”
For people with anxiety, reaping the mental health benefits of exercise might depend on how they stay active. A systematic review of randomized clinical trials found that exercise in general shows promise as a useful treatment for anxiety (but more studies are necessary).
The evidence seems to be stronger when you look at yoga25 out of 35 studies showed that people experience a significant reduction in stress and anxiety when they regularly hit their mats. People who take their workouts outside with just a simple 50-minute walk in the woods also saw a drop in anxiety.
What’s left is a study that looks at whether doing yoga in the forest offers even more benefits for our minds. Science, we’re waiting for you.

3. Stop insomnia in its tracks.

Ever suffer from insomnia? It’s the worst: You’re up all night, tossing and turning, only getting more and more stressed about the amount of sleep you’re not getting as the clock ticks. It has crept into my life on and off for years, but I’ve found that exercise fights the condition better than anything else I’ve tried.
Science supports what I’ve observed about myself—that tiring out your muscles during the day is key to getting a good night’s rest. In fact, mental health and exercise statistics show that aerobics might be just as effective at fighting chronic insomnia as hypnotic drugs are. The National Sleep Foundation agrees, citing studies that found that when adults with insomnia started working out, they “fell asleep more quickly, slept slightly longer, and had better sleep quality than before they began exercising.”
The mental health benefits of exercise and its ability to help you get a good night’s rest show promise, especially in people with certain disorders, says Gervais.
“Sleep helps regulate moods. People with depression might sleep too much, and anxiety can cause insomnia. Getting too little sleep can increase negative emotions, which can result in increasing anxiety and depression,” she explains. “And don’t forget about bipolar disorder, which requires a structured sleep schedule to help remain regulated.”
Curiously, exercise seems not only to enhance sleep but also to reduce fatigue. A study out of the University of Georgia found that people who suffer from fatigue can boost their energy levels by 20 percent with regular, low-intensity physical activity.
More research needs to be done on the connection between exercise and our energy levels, but it’s clear that moving around on a regular basis plays a role in this relationship.

4. Give stress the one–two punch.

Stress is associated with a host of physical and emotional ailments, from high blood pressure and diabetes to depression and anxiety. But the good news is that working up a sweat can help you work through the stresses of life.
“In San Francisco, where my clients live, people are really stressed out. They have a lot going on, between working long hours and over-scheduling themselves, and it can be really difficult to manage,” says Gervais. “But exercise is a really great form of self-care and a good way to take a break. Even going out for a walk or quick jog after work can really relieve some stress.”
While exercise is a stress on the body, the physical challenge aids in reducing stress hormones in the brain, which helps people relax. Furthermore, the repetitive motions common in most types of physical activity (think hitting a tennis ball, jumping rope, or lifting weights) put you into a sort of moving meditation that promotes calmness and clarity. It helps you forget about the woes of the day and emerge from the gym in a more relaxed state.
Ever notice how when you’re stressed out about something at work, you feel the strong urge to take a walk? It’s more than just escapism—it’s your body telling you to work through some of that stress by moving. Listen to it.

5. Boost your heart rate to boost your self-esteem.

Feel down on yourself sometimes? (Who doesn’t?) Self-doubt and low confidence happen to almost everyone from time to time, but a boost in self-esteem is actually one of the mental health benefits of exercise.
Exercising always comes with challenges. For some people, that challenge is simply making it to the gym when they intend to. For others, it might mean achieving a personal best in their sport, whether that’s running or softball. Small or large, those successes add up and give you a new perspective on what you’re able to achieve both in and out of the gym.
The social benefits of exercise also go on to improve how we see ourselves. Joining a sport, working out at a gym, or even running outside gives us the chance to get into the world and potentially connect with others.
“Exercise combats isolation,” says Gervais. “Part of isolation is that people really don’t feel confident in a social situation, so building self-esteem can help with that. Even just being in an environment with other people can help, but you can take it a step further and join a walking club or group fitness class and start meeting others.”
Take it from me—working out is what gave me enough confidence to quit the corporate world and pursue my dreams of writing. Who knows where an exercise-induced surge in confidence could lead you?
Although people have known anecdotally for some time that physical activity helps their general mental health, scientists are only now starting to discover the true extent of the benefits of exercise on clinical mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.
More study needs to be done on exactly what types of exercise are best for our psychological health, how often we should be active, and what kinds of environments are best for working out. But with what researchers have discovered so far, it’s hard to doubt the mental health benefits of exercise.
Until we have more conclusive data, don’t worry so much about the details: Just focus on moving, regularly and often, and working with a qualified mental health professional to ensure you’re feeling your absolute best—mind and body. Current Events For Kids: How To Tell Your Kids About The News

No matter your politics, we can all agree that the last few years have been overwhelming. Thanks to social media and 24-hour news cycles, there is a lot of news, and most of it is quite scary and destabilizing: The 2016 election is still in our rearview mirror, and even preschoolers know the names “Trump” and “Hillary.” Small kids have been separated from their parents and detained. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is arresting people in their homes and workplaces.

And a lot of our kids are asking about it. That leads us to wonder, how much should our kids really know? How much should we share with them, and what should we hide? How do we keep them feeling safe when the world doesn’t seem very safe at all?

Should I teach my kids about current events?

With very little kids, it’s best to steer clear of explaining the news completely. “When there’s an election that’s preoccupying their parents, we might do a mock election at the preschool,” explains Jane Rosen, PsyD, child clinical psychologist and director of education at the IKAR ECC preschool in Los Angeles. “Current events have to be broad or catastrophic to pay attention to them [think: 9/11], and physical distance matters.”
If a catastrophic or nearby event is impacting your child’s life, it’s important not to be too vague—or too specific or graphic. Because they hear things from friends or other adults, your first question should always be: What do you know, and what have you heard?
Even if the event you’re discussing happened nearby, if the kid is younger than 5, you want to, first and foremost, reassure them: I will do everything I can to protect you.

Current Events That Aren’t for Kids

“Anything can be harmful or not, depending on how it’s messaged,” explains Rosen. “Young children have no capacity to make sense of what they’re seeing or hearing. They see that people are frightened, and they resonate with the feelings, but can’t process the event itself.”
Remember, too: Kids as old as elementary-school age may not understand that an image being repeatedly shown on a loop on TV or online is not happening over and over again. (Think, again, of September 11.)
Children may think it’s continuously happening, and this is terrifying. “Much repetition of graphic imagery is upsetting and has a nightmarish quality,” says Rosen. “Find ways that you can do something to help them process an event that makes no sense.”

How to Talk About Current Events With Your Kids (or Not)

  • Keep graphics to a minimum. Discussing a recent event with your child is much different than them catching glances of blurry, confusing footage for which they have no context.
  • Turn off the TV and put away your phones. There’s no need for them to watch the pundits constantly talking on cable news, and they certainly don’t need to be reading the opinions of the masses on social media.
  • Talk to your child about what we can do to be helpful and stay safe. You can say: Sometimes really scary or bad things will happen, and we will keep you safe.
  • Reassure them that their world will stay safe. If it’s not an authentic statement—if, for instance, you really fear ICE coming to pick you or your child up—explain what steps you are taking to try to keep everyone safe.
  • Give them multiple venues to express their feelings. Drawing and playing are good ways to get things out.

How to Get Your Kids Involved in Current Events

Talking about current events is one thing, but what about kids who want to get involved? That’s not a bad thing, but depending on their ages, you’ll want to be vague.
For instance, some kids at an L.A. preschool recently painted pictures for migrant children who were separated from their parents and detained by the American government. Did the teachers tell the kids all about the kids’ circumstances? No way. If you’d like to do something similar, the message can be: We’d love for you to draw pictures to cheer children up who are sad. The teachers didn’t say they were away from their parents or out of their homes.
It’s nice—and important!—to involve children in what’s happening in the world: collecting diapers, delivering food to those in need. “These instill ideas about healing the world, and that they have a place in it,” says Rosen. But you want to keep it simple at this age.
With slightly older children, you want to help them look for the helpers. There will always be helpers. (We miss you, Mr. Rogers.) Ask them, What can we do to help? “Children that age are action-oriented,” Rosen says. “Can you gather blankets? Cash in some allowance to send money?”
Kids want to be given something to do. Being proactive keeps us from sinking into despair.

Little Activists: Taking Current Events a Step Further

So, should you start molding little demonstration-attending activists in your household? By all means!
But you need to think about the how, when, and why. Who is this protest for? And why do you want to bring your kid? Is it a childcare issue, or is this vital to your family culture?

“I don’t think very young children belong some places,” says Rosen. “You can bring a baby along on a march as long as it’s safe. But the idea that you’ll inculcate your 2-year-old can be inappropriate, and [protests] can be violent. Something peaceful can turn in a moment.” Rosen—who protested the Vietnam War along with her parents—suggests waiting until the kids are closer to 9 or 10.
It’s also important to think about what is being communicated. A 5-year-old who is about to start kindergarten might not feel safe at an anti-gun rally, but a 10-year-old who worries about this issue might be feel empowered by it. You know your kid best, but be mindful of developmental differences in ages, too.
Rosen adds that anything about family separation or where children are being abused is better left unmentioned to a small child. “It’s amazing what sticks, and what comes out in different expressions of anxiety.”

How To Choose A Prenatal Vitamin That's Actually Worth It

Whether you recently learned you’re pregnant or you’re thinking about trying to conceive, you’ve got a long list of stuff to do. One thing that needs to be pushed to the tippy top of that list? Buy a bottle of prenatal vitamins and start taking them, ASAP.
We can already hear the questions formulating: If I’m not even pregnant yet, do I really need a prenatal vitamin? and If I’m already taking a multivitamin, isn’t that enough to cover me?
The quick answers are yes and no, but we talked to the experts to find out why you need to take prenatal vitamins when you aren’t even pregnant yet and which are the best prenatal vitamins for you.

What are prenatal vitamins?

The word “prenatal” in the name is a pretty big clue here: These are special vitamins meant to be taken before giving birth, and that sets them apart from your average multivitamin.
“The key nutrients in prenatal vitamins are iron and folate,” explains Bradley Price, an OB-GYN from Austin, Texas. “Iron is a key building block in the machinery for getting oxygen to every part of the body, as well as through the placenta to baby. Very few women have adequate iron stores in their bone marrow, so iron supplementation during pregnancy is crucial.”

That extra iron in prenatal vitamins helps prevent anemia for moms-to-be during pregnancy, and it also helps women avoid the risk of blood transfusion if blood loss is higher than average during delivery.
Prenatal vitamins are also packed with folate or folic acid, a B vitamin that Price calls “one of the most important nutrients women can take to protect the health of the baby.” Among the benefits of folate touted by doctors is a lower risk of baby developing neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly and a lower risk of preterm birth, which carries with it a variety of risks to a baby.
Dietary guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists recommend that pregnant women get at least 600 micrograms of folic acid daily from all sources for that reason, and sources can include prenatal vitamins.

The Difference Between Prenatal Vitamins and Regular Vitamins

But you’ve got a multivitamin you’ve been taking for years, so you’re all set, right? Well, unless it’s specifically labeled “prenatal,” probably not.
While a general multivitamin supplement can be helpful for the average population, Price says they’re no replacement for prenatal vitamins as they’re designed specifically for the nutritional needs of those who are pregnant—and their babies.
Even grabbing your Granny’s vitamins thinking it’s better than nothing could put you and baby in a bad spot, he explains, because “supplements marketed for the elderly contain very little iron because this age group requires minimal iron and are actually at higher risk for getting too much iron.”

When to Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins

In part because of the name, there’s a common misconception out there that prenatal vitamins are only supposed to be taken by pregnant women, says Kara Manglani, a certified nurse midwife and founder of The Fertile Times.
“Ideally, you should start taking prenatal vitamins three months before trying to become pregnant,” Manglani says. “In fact, there is no downside to taking prenatal vitamins, so the earlier the better.”
That’s been a recommendation of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for years, however a prenatal health and nutrition survey of U.S. women performed on behalf of the March of Dimes in 2017 found just 34 percent of women said they started taking the prenatal vitamin or multivitamin before they knew they were pregnant.
Most providers agree that if you’re of “childbearing age” and thinking about getting pregnant, now is the time to start popping a prenatal vitamin.
Another bonus? Some studies indicate that taking prenatal vitamins may actually reduce baby’s risk of autism. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, followed 700 California families with children from 2003 to 2009. Their study, published in the medical journal Epidemiology in 2011, claims that “women who reported not taking a daily prenatal vitamin immediately before and during the first month of pregnancy were nearly twice as likely to have a child with an autism spectrum disorder as women who did take the supplements—and the associated risk rose to seven times as great when combined with a high-risk genetic make-up.”

A second study, published in the British Medical Journal in 2017, looked at more than 270,000 kids born in Stockholm, Sweden, between 1996 and 2007. Researchers say they found that women who take prenatal vitamins during their pregnancy may be able to lower their child’s risk of developing autism associated with intellectual disabilities by as much as 30 percent.
Of course, correlation does not equal causation, and other studies have purported that too much of two specific vitamins—B12 and folate—during pregnancy may have the opposite effect!
Still, doctors stress the need to take prenatal vitamins because of what they definitely do know, thanks to other studies.
“We do know that taking folic acid supplementation prior to conception decreases the risk of having a baby born with a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida,” says Mary Jane Minkin, an OB-GYN and clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the Yale University School of Medicine.
“We do know that babies in utero take iron from their moms—and if mom is anemic to begin with, she will likely become more anemic—and feel even more exhausted,” Minkin says. “We know that vitamin D is important for many organ systems to work properly. So a good prenatal contains proper amounts of all of those vitamins.”

How to Choose the Best Prenatal Vitamin

Before you hit the vitamin aisle at your local pharmacy, your best bet for finding the best prenatal vitamin for you is a trip to your OB-GYN or midwife’s office. They can test your blood to see what your iron and other levels look like and help you determine what nutrients you really need right now.
Some doctors advocate for a prescription-strength prenatal vitamin, as they typically have different amounts of folic acid than the kinds you’ll find in the store.
While an over-the-counter prenatal vitamin will likely contain about 800 mcg (micrograms) of folate, you’ll find about 1,000 mcg in prescription prenatals, Price says.
“But the key difference is the iron source,” he adds. “OTC sources typically contain iron salts, such as ferrous sulfate, gluconate, or fumarate, which are all poorly absorbed and aggravate acid reflux, leading to nausea, indigestion, heartburn, and constipation. Facing this array of side effects, many women are reluctant to take their vitamin regularly, if at all.”
Price recommends Prenate Mini, a prescription-strength prenatal vitamin that puts the iron molecule between two amino acids, so it’s absorbed efficiently in the same part of the small intestine as amino acids.
But other women may find that an OTC option works for them, says Manglani. “There is a huge selection to choose from when selecting an OTC vitamin,” she says. “This gives you a lot of choice, but it is also important to make sure you select a prenatal vitamin that has all the necessary nutrients.”

What to Look for in a Prenatal Vitamin

To ensure you do select the right prenatal vitamin, Manglani suggests you look for a one that includes the following, or that you take a vitamin that includes some of these ingredients, along with supplements that your healthcare provider approves.

Methyl-folate

Compared to folic acid, Manglani says methyl-folate is better absorbed by the body but still provides the necessary nutrients. The recommended intake is between 400 and 1,000 mcg per day.

Iron

This mineral will help mom stay healthy, Price says, and it will also help your body as it works to produce more blood to pump through the body and carry oxygen to the baby. Look for a vitamin that delivers 30 mg per day.

Vitamin A

The recommended daily intake of vitamin A is 770 mcg, and this is not a case of “770 is good, so more is better.” Manglani advises moms-to-be to be wary of anything with more than 5000 IU (short for International Unit), as vitamin A toxicity can lead to birth defects.

Vitamin D

It’s recommended that you get at least 400 units of vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin that’s typically found in fish and dairy products, a day. Most adults also get vitamin D from spending time in the sun. Because it’s recommended that parents keep newborns out of direct sunlight to protect their fragile skin, recent studies have shown a risk of vitamin D deficiency in babies. Consuming vitamin D in your prenatal vitamin has not only been linked to a reduction in the risk of pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, but it helps boost baby’s vitamin D levels.

Calcium

Moms-to-be should shoot for at least 1,000 mg per day, Manglani says. This will help the fetal skeleton develop, and it can be obtained via your prenatal vitamins and the consumption of calcium-rich foods such as yogurt and milk.

Iodine

Because of the impact pregnancy can have on the thyroid gland, the American Thyroid Association recommends iodine supplementation before and during pregnancy as well as while breastfeeding. Look for a supplement with about 150 mcg per serving.

Choline and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)

Thought by scientists to help improve a baby’s brain development, these nutrients are not always available in prenatal vitamin form and may require an extra supplement, Manglani says. You can check with your provider to see if there is one that’s good for you. The recommended level of DHA is 200 to 300 mcg, while it’s suggested you get about 450 mgs of choline.

When Prenatal Vitamins Aren’t Worth It

In addition to making sure your prenatal vitamin has those ingredients outlined above, there are also a few other things to watch out for. Buying the wrong prenatal vitamin might not be worth it. Here’s what the experts recommend:
You’ll want to make sure any bottle of vitamins you’re considering has been thoroughly reviewed by reputable agencies, warns Vin Amin, president of vitamin maker Eu Natural.
“Look to see that the supplement has been made to meet FDA standards and cGMP, which stands for current Good Manufacturing Practices,” Amin suggests. “This ensures your product has been manufactured and packaged based on the latest regulations.”

You’ll also want to be wary of junk “fillers” added to a prenatal vitamin, Amin warns. Check the supplement facts panel in the “other ingredients” section on the bottle. If you spot magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, or silicon dioxide, you know you’ve picked up a vitamin packed with fillers.
If you’re a vegetarian, you should also beware that many prenatal vitamins come in gelatin capsule form, which means they’ve been made from animal products. “Vegetarians will definitely want to avoid these products,” Amin says.
And while it’s tempting to load up on gummy vitamins (hey, who says the kids get to have all the fun?), Amin says they’re not as potent as the capsule formulation, which means a whole lot of extra sugar intake to get the same dosage.
One final thing to consider, Manglani says, is cost. While over-the-counter prenatals are cheaper for some and may be the best bet if your provider recommends an OTC vitamin, prescription vitamins may be covered by your health insurance. That could net out to a cheaper or even free prenatal vitamin, Manglani says.

Prenatals Without the Pain: Treating Nausea From Prenatal Vitamins

Some 97 percent of women do take prenatal vitamins during pregnancy according to the March of Dimes poll—which is good news—but while they should be taken all the way through pregnancy and even while breastfeeding, that doesn’t always happen.
The culprit is often nausea, says Sherry Ross, an OB-GYN at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
“With the high amounts of vitamins and minerals, prenatal vitamins are notorious for causing nausea during pregnancy,” Ross says.
To help quell the nausea and stick to your prenatal vitamin routine, she suggests taking your vitamins right after eating or before going to sleep at night. It’s also okay to cut that vitamin in half (many are scored for this purpose), taking half in the morning and half at night.
“If the nausea persists, I have my patients take a one-a-day multivitamin instead of a prenatal until they have a stronger stomach,” she says. Changing brands may also be a helpful option!

Aloe Vera Gel Might Just Be The Missing Piece In Your Skincare Routine

Let me tell y’all something. I am obsessed with aloe vera gel. Remember how the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding spritzed Windex on everything from dry skin to a scraped knee? Well, that’s how I feel about aloe vera gel. Got a sunburn? Aloe vera gel can fix it. That pesky pimple? Just dab some aloe vera gel on it. Ashy knees? Aloe vera gel, baby.
Now, admittedly, my love for aloe vera gel has not historically been research- or evidence-based. I love the way it smells and the way it goes on sticky but dries smooth. (I mean, magic, right?!) So I wanted to find out if aloe vera gel is the skincare miracle I’ve been claiming—or is it way overrated?
I spoke with skincare experts to get the scoop on why aloe vera gel might just be the missing piece in your skincare routine.

What is pure aloe vera gel?

“Aloe vera is the botanical or scientific name for the plant,” says Justin Hancock, certified professional horticulturist and garden expert at Costa Farms in Miami. “Botanists have given it a name change, so you’ll also see the old botanical name Aloe barbadensis used—confusing, I know!”
A tropical succulent, there are literally hundreds of varieties of aloe. But aloe vera (or aloe barbadensis) is the kind you’re most likely find in spots from your neighborhood supermarket to the local nursery. Aloe vera doesn’t just refer to the plant itself, though. According to Hancock, “Aloe vera is also used commonly to refer to the thick gel found in the leaves. So you can essentially use the term however you want and not be wrong.”

What’s more, says Hancock, you actually can grow and harvest your own all-natural aloe vera gel at home. Even if you don’t have an aloe plant, whole aloe leaves can usually be found in specialty grocery stores.
No time to grow or harvest your own aloe vera? Celebrity facialist Ildi Pekar, who counts Miranda Kerr as a client, says if you’re buying aloe vera gel, “Use a 100 percent natural aloe vera and stay away from added alcohols.”
When purchasing aloe vera gel, don’t get fooled by deceptive labeling; always look at the ingredient list before purchasing. Bloomberg News recently reported that many popular brands of aloe vera gel, including those from CVS and Walgreens, contained little or no aloe vera at all! What’s more, these manufactured “aloe” gels often contain alcohol for a cooling effect. Instead of hydrating your skin, the alcohol in these faux aloe vera gels actually ends up drying skin out.
A pure aloe vera gel will contain ingredients you can pronounce: aloe vera (obviously) and citric acid (an organic compound used as a preservative). Some may also contain essential oil for scent.

Aloe Vera Gel for Skincare

Aloe vera gel is a great addition to any skincare routine because it isn’t comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores. And, according to Adrienne Haughton, MD, director of clinical and cosmetic dermatology at Stony Brook Medicine at Commack, aloe vera may help fight signs of aging.
One scientific review of aloe vera states that the mucopolysaccharides help in binding moisture into the skin,” says Haughton. “It goes on to state that aloe stimulates fibroblasts, which produced collagen and elastin fibers—making the skin more elastic and potentially less wrinkled.”
“Another study showed that taking aloe vera gel orally has anti-aging effects,” Haughton continues. “Those who took aloe vera gel showed improved skin elasticity and decreased skin wrinkles, which was shown to be the result of increased pro-collagen throughout the dermis (the layer of the skin that contains collagen).”
As if reducing fine lines and wrinkles weren’t wonderful enough, aloe vera gel may even help clear up acne breakouts faster. In one study, participants whose acne was being treated with the topical retinoid tretinoin were also given aloe vera gel, which was applied topically. Tretinoin and aloe vera gel used in combination were shown to be more effective at treating acne than acne medication alone.
So how can you use aloe vera gel as part of your daily skincare routine?
Well, you can use aloe vera gel daily as a moisturizer. I have incredibly dry skin, and I’ve found that pure aloe vera gel is one of the only products, aside from literally bathing in olive oil (which I do not recommend), that keeps my face hydrated all day long. Or you can use aloe vera gel to make a moisturizing aloe vera lotion with basic ingredients, almost all of which can be found in your kitchen cupboard.

Aloe Vera Gel for Home Hair Remedies

Wait, you mean you can use aloe vera gel on your head too?! you ask? Yes! I told you aloe vera gel is amazing.
According to Dominic Burg, PhD, chief scientist for évolis hair products, “Aloe contains enzymes that provide an exfoliating effect and remove dead cells. It is also rich in vitamins C and E, which provide it its antioxidant/anti-aging effect.” These properties, says Burg, make aloe hugely beneficial to hair and scalp health.
Because aloe vera helps exfoliate the scalp, it’s a great treatment for dry, flaky skin and dandruff. In addition to its anti-aging properties, aloe’s vitamin E helps lock moisture into the scalp, preventing further dryness and irritation. And, while aloe vera gel won’t make your hair grow faster, its moisturizing qualities help prevent breakage and split ends.

Pure aloe vera gel is not very convenient to use,” explains Burg, “so it is best to look for combination products. Avoid silicones and too many heavy oils that may block pores and cause greasy hair at the roots.”
If you’d rather not decipher the ingredients on haircare products that claim to contain pure aloe vera gel, Burg says it’s easy to make your own aloe vera conditioning treatment at home.
“You can dilute fresh aloe vera gel with water [using a] 1:2 [ratio] and use it as a conditioner while in the shower after shampooing,” explains Burg. “You can also mix essential oils such as rosemary in it for added anti-aging benefits. For a moisturizing mask-style treatment, you can mix aloe vera gel with coconut oil and apply to the hair and scalp, then leave for at least 30 minutes.”

Other Uses for Aloe Vera Gel

Healing Wounds

Aloe vera gel isn’t just great for your skin and hair. According to a 2016 study, when applied topically, aloe vera gel accelerated wound healing in rats, resulting in reduced inflammation and decreased scar tissue size. According to a 2015 review of aloe vera used in wound care, aloe vera may help heal wounds faster due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties. You can apply 100 percent aloe vera gel topically straight to a wound to promote healing, or you can apply it to your bandage before covering a wound.
Aloe vera gel can even be used to promote postpartum healing after a vaginal birth. The easiest way to apply aloe vera gel postpartum is by making padsicles to stash in your freezer. Simply take a pad of your choice (I suggest the jumbo ones they send home from the hospital with you), coat it in aloe vera gel, wrap it back in its packaging, and stick it in the freezer. Once it’s frozen, stick that sucker in your giant postpartum undies: The aloe promotes faster healing, and the ice-cold pad will help reduce swelling.

Makeup Remover

You don’t have to spend big bucks to find an aloe vera-based makeup remover. In fact, you can make your own aloe vera gel makeup remover at home with this recipe from Wild for Nature. Best of all? It’s also vegan.
If you’re not the DIY type, Pekar says that many products in her eponymous skincare line contain aloe vera, including a facial cleanser that can be used to remove makeup.

Aloe Vera Gel Side Effects

It’s pretty rare to be allergic to topical aloe treatments, but Haughton says that “allergic contact dermatitis has been seen with aloe vera gel.”
If you’re allergic to aloe vera gel, you’ll likely just get a mild rash or feel itchy where the aloe was applied. If that’s the case, wash the area with soap and water to remove the aloe vera gel completely. However, if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, be sure to call your doctor right away.

Aloe Vera Gel and California’s Prop 65

You may have heard recently that California added aloe to the list of known carcinogenic ingredients included in the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (more efficiently known as Prop 65). But, you may be wondering, didn’t you just tell me all the amazing ways aloe vera can help my skin and hair?
Yes I did, and it still can. That’s because the aloe included on the Prop 65 list was actually a very specific type: non-decolorized, whole-leaf aloe extract. A study found that this specific type of aloe extract, which is manufactured using a charcoal filtration process, can release organic compounds called anthraquinones, which are known for their laxative properties. Anthraquinones aren’t all carcinogenic, but one type called aloin, which is found in the outer leaf pulp of the aloe plant, was shown to cause cancerous tumors in rats.
The good news is that aloin caused tumors to grow in rats when ingested. Little or no cancer-causing activity was reported when aloe (even if the product contained aloin) was applied topically.
Aloe vera gel may not be the cure to absolutely everything, despite what I’d been preaching to anyone who’d listen. But it turns out that when it comes to your skin and scalp, aloe vera gel is pretty darn close to being the magical skincare remedy I’ve always known it is. And it’s way safer than Windex.
