People Share The Creepiest Things Their Kids Have Said And It’s Terrifying

As every parent knows, kids are great at doing two things: being absolutely adorable and utterly creepy. There’s a reason that films like The Exorcist and Village of the Damned are so disturbing; when a cute kid starts acting sinister, it’s hard not to run away screaming.

Unfortunately, children seem to love creeping people out. We collected some of the creepiest things that kids have said or done, then edited those stories slightly for grammar and readability. Whether you’re a parent or you’re looking for reasons to avoid parenthood, these tales should send a tingle up your spine.

1. When you’re tucking your kid in for the night, weird stuff tends to happen.

Sure, parents know that there aren’t any weird monsters lurking under the bed, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t get creeped out on occasion. Kids don’t make that any easier.
“I was tucking in my two-year-old,” wrote Reddit user UnfortunateBirthmark. “He said ‘Goodbye dad.’ I said, ‘No, we say good night.’ He said ‘I know. But this time, it’s goodbye.’ Had to check on him a few times to make sure he was still there.”
Reddit user Falicor was tucking his daughter in when she began crying. Naturally, he asked her why she was so upset.
“‘Bad man,’ she said.”
“‘What bad man?’”

“‘There.’ She points behind me at a dark corner of the room. A lamp on [the] bookshelf next to said darkened corner falls off as soon as I turn to look. She slept in our bed that night.”

Some kids seem to see mysterious, shadowy figures on a regular basis.
“While changing my daughter in front of the open closet door, she kept looking around me and laughing,” QuagmireDP recalled. “I asked her what was so funny. She said, ‘The man.’ To which I replied, ‘What man?’”
“She then pointed at the closet and said, ‘The man with the snake neck.’ I turn around and nothing was there. I’m afraid to look into the history of my house to see if anyone hung themselves in the closet. At least she wasn’t scared.”

2. Kids say the damndest things.

The creepy stuff doesn’t always stop when the kid’s asleep.
“My mom has told me a story about my brother when he was younger,” wrote Hsertich. “I guess he was sleepwalking, and she was trying to coax him back to bed. He said something along the lines of ‘I would, but the devil is behind you.’ Yeah, nope.”
As Reddit user NotTomPettysGirl wrote, kids can be brutally honest—which can make for some awkward (and disturbing) family conversations.
“He didn’t say this to me, but to his grandmother,” she recalled. “He was cuddling with her and being very sweet. He was about 3 at the time. He takes her face in his hands, brings his face close to hers, then tells her that she’s very old and will die soon. Then he makes a point of looking at the clock.”

And if you’ve got multiple kids, you can expect them to be pretty creepy towards each other.
“My 3-year-old daughter stood next to her newborn brother,” wrote Like_I_Was_sayin. “She looked at him for a while, then turned and looked at me and said, ‘Daddy, it’s a monster. We should bury it.’”
Reddit user Olafthebent has a similar story about his daughter.
“She was holding her baby brother for the first time,” he wrote. “[She asked], ‘So I shouldn’t throw him in the fire?’”

3. Playtime is fun…right?

Not when you’re playing with a kid who’s apparently the spawn of Satan.
My 5-year-old adopted little sister has a game she would play where we would pretend to go around to people’s houses and take their children,” wrote Borkmeister. Okay, that’s terrifying, but certainly imaginative.
“Once we rounded up enough, we would eat them, violently and maliciously. This was her idea, through and through. The name of the game? Social worker.”

HealthyWay
Daiga Ellaby

Maybe they should have just played with crayons instead. Actually, on second thought…
“My younger cousin was around 5 at the time,” explained Nilliak. “He once drew a picture of a black monster, looked up at me, and said, ‘He told me to draw this. He’s coming for you. You better hide.’”
We’d probably take that advice.

4. Granted, kids can make just about anything creepy.

“I don’t have kids, but once, visiting some friends on a farm, my buddy’s youngest girl—she was 5 or 6 at the time—was afraid of the chickens,” wrote Jonuggs. “I tried to explain to her that the chickens weren’t there to hurt us, but she wasn’t having it.”
“So I’m sitting around the fire pit, looking at one of the chickens a few feet in front of me when I feel hot breath in my ear as she whispers: ‘See. He’s always watching.’ Horrific and hysterical all at once.”

HealthyWay
Tegan Mierle

We’d love to introduce that kid to the kid in this next story.
“I asked my three kids what they wanted to do when they grew up,” wrote one Reddit user (whose later deleted his account). “10-year-old Jason said, ‘I want to be a teacher.’ 8-year-old Mitzi said, ‘I want to be a writer.’ 6-year-old Nick said, ‘I want to run the machine that cuts the heads off the chickens.’ All-righty, then.”

4. Kids really love their demonic apparitions.

“My co-worker’s four year old daughter always thought that the rattling of the water pipes in the kitchen cupboards were ‘white wolves,’ and the sound always scared her,” wrote Darinfjc.
“One day she was sitting at the kitchen table and she said, ‘Mom. The white wolves aren’t bad…they’re our friends!’”
“Her mom encouraged the idea by saying, ‘Yes! The white wolves are protecting us. They are our friends.’”
“Then her daughter added in, ‘They’re our friends, but not the man who crawls on the floor and stands by my bed.’”
We’ll give you a moment to finish shuddering after that story. Finished? Okay—this one’s even worse.

“I work in a preschool. Creepy s*** [happens there] all the time,” wrote Maryomorevna. “The one that sticks out to me happened last year. There is a small kitchenette area in our classroom that the kids use during free time for playing house or whatever pretend games they think up.”
“There was one little girl that I was keeping a close eye on, mostly because of how withdrawn from the other kids she was. I noticed she was playing with a baby doll in the kitchenette, rocking it back and forth and singing to it.”
“She took the baby, shoved it into the play oven and slammed the door shut. She turned around, looked straight at me, and said, ‘Sometimes bad babies go in timeout,’ in the creepiest little girl voice I’ve ever heard before smiling and running off. That one kind of shook me.”

5. Sometimes, the creepy stuff has a fairly simple explanation.

“My niece was sitting on the couch with a weird look on her face,” wrote Hrhomer. “Her mom asked her what she was thinking about, and she said, ‘I’m imagining the waves of blood rushing over me.’”
“As it turned out, they had been at a local science museum with an exhibit on the circulatory system. One of the features was a walk among some giant fake blood vessels, and she was remembering that.”
Reddit user Psalm_69 also has a creepy story with a fairly mundane background.
“I was sound asleep, and at around 6 a.m., I was woken up by my 4-year-old daughter’s face inches from mine,” they wrote. “She looked right into my eyes and whispered, ‘I want to peel all your skin off.’”
“The backstory here is I had been sunburned the previous week and was starting to peel. In my sleep-addled state, however, it was pretty terrifying for a few seconds. I didn’t know if I was dreaming or what was going on.”

6. This kid might be the freakiest toddler on the planet.

“When my son was little, maybe 3, he used to do this weird crawl where he would slide his forehead along the floor,” wrote Seethella. “That was pretty creepy in and of itself. Then, one night, he crawled across the hallway into my room like that and stood up a few inches from my face while making a weird meow sound. He got into bed with me and went to sleep.”
“Another time, he was freaking out about a monster in the basement, so we went down and saw nothing (of course). As I turned out the light and headed upstairs, he said ‘He’s right behind us now.’ I might have peed a little.”

“Possibly the creepiest thing he did: One day, I scolded him for misbehaving, so he hid his head under his blanket. I pretended I couldn’t find him by saying ‘Where is my little Carson?’”
“He slowly lowered the blanket and with a dead-evil stare said, ‘Carson is gone. I am Rick.’ I’m certain he’s possessed. We never knew any Ricks, as far I can remember. Still don’t. Never figured out where he picked up the name.”

7. Some kids become strangely obsessed with their parents.

We know, we know; all kids are obsessed with their parents at a certain age. That doesn’t make it less disturbing when your kid thinks about your inevitable demise. This story comes from Pipperfloats, whose kids are both disturbingly imaginative and practical.
“My 5-year-old: ‘Mommy, when you die, I want to put you in a glass jar so I can keep you and see you forever.’ To which my 6-year-old responds: ‘That’s stupid. Where are you gonna find a jar that big?’”

HealthyWay
Matt Briney

Apparently, that’s not such a strange inclination for kids, according to Reddit user GatorMcGovern.
“A friend of mine’s child told him, ‘Daddy, I love you so much that I want to cut your head off and carry it around so I can see your face whenever I want,’” he wrote.
Even when kids promise not to do something disturbing, it still comes off as creepy.
“My 3-year-old son generally has a happy-go-lucky attitude, so this is pretty odd,” explained Lord_of_hosts. “Sometimes when he’s cuddling with his mommy, he’ll say very seriously, ‘Mom, I promise I won’t ever chew on your bones. I promise.’ I have absolutely no idea where he got this.

8. Kids basically act like little aliens…and yes, sometimes we mean that literally.

“My mom likes to tell this story,” wrote Bladel. “Apparently, when I was 5 or 6, I told her that aliens had stolen her real son and replaced him with me, an exact copy. Someday, I would return to my home planet. But she shouldn’t be sad, because her real son had a good life in our zoo.”
Some kids belong in a zoo, so we’re not really seeing where the horror comes from. Then again, maybe it wasn’t just a story.

HealthyWay
Daiga Ellaby

“When my oldest was about 3 years old, I had a really weird dream where an alien was trying to take my son,” wrote acefamilia. “I was lying in bed watching this alien take him by the hand and started walking off towards the window.”
“When I started to scream, I woke up. Here is the creepy part: I wake up to find my 3-year-old turning on the night light in our room. He turns to look at me and says, ‘Oh, its okay, Mommy. The alien is gone.’ I didn’t sleep for the rest of the night.”

9. Most of these stories take place late at night.

Hey, that’s when the really creepy stuff happens.
“Around four or five months ago, at like 3:00 a.m., I was awoken by a very weird growling sound,” wrote Catch22milo. “Disoriented, and in complete darkness, I started to come to. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what the sound was. I had fallen asleep on the couch in the living room, which added to my confusion. I was thinking maybe the cat had caught something, but I really had no idea.”
“As my vision started to come around, this three-foot grotesque-looking shadow thing starts to appear a few feet in front of me. Just standing there, growling. Creepy. In reality, it only took me a few seconds to figure out what was going on, but I imagine I looked visibly shaken.”

A post shared by Cassie (@cassiegoossen) on

“It was my son. My 3-year-old son had snuck out of bed at three in the morning, found his Hulk mask in the dark, and decided to go find Daddy to play superheroes. I guess his idea of playing was to do a Hulk growl, two feet from my sleeping face until I woke up in a panic. He ended up doing the same thing to my wife a few weeks later which, to me, was way more hilarious.”
It’s always cute when kids disturb their parents’ sleep, right, parents?
“My 5-year-old, at the time, had night terrors and would scream in her sleep,” wrote Thingsimeanttobe. “One night, I said, ‘Mama’s here. It’s okay.’ She looked right at me, still half-asleep, and screamed, ‘Mama? But who is that behind you?’”

10. We’ve got one more story about a dark, mysterious stranger, and it’s a doozy.

“When my son was in kindergarten, I received a call from his teacher while at work saying that he refused to go outside at recess time,” wrote Opud. “He was sitting there terrified.”
“He said there was a guy named Otie who had brown hair and a brown beard who kept telling him to ‘come here, buddy’ over and over while he was playing outside before school started. They reviewed tapes and didn’t see anyone. It scared the crap out of me that some man was trying to abduct him, but I’m pretty sure he either sees ghosts or has a very active imagination.”
“He also said this guy talked to him at the bus stop or outside his window—his room is on the 2nd floor. He refused to go anywhere near half of our home when he was 1-2 years old. He would just stand in the doorway and point.”

11. This story’s oddly charming (emphasis on the “oddly” part).

“My mom’s dad died 10 years before I was born,” wrote NejKidd. “I was about 6 or 7 when my parents divorced. The day before my mom told me they were divorcing, I was at the kitchen table drawing or something while my mom made tea.”
“She says I stopped instantly and looked toward the front door as if I’d heard it open. I stared for a long time, then giggled, turned toward my mum and said, ‘Granddad says don’t worry. Everything will be okay, and he won’t let anything bad happen.’ I then began humming and went back to my drawing. My mom says it’s the single creepiest thing that’s ever happened to her, and I have no memory of it happening.”

HealthyWay
Kelly Sikkema

While we’re on the subject of strangely prescient kids, Surethingsugar’s son came up with a surprisingly detailed story for his fictional sibling.
“‘Before I was born here, I had a sister, right?’” he said. “Her and my other Mom are so old now. They were okay when the car was on fire, but I sure wasn’t!’ He was maybe 5 or 6 years old. It was totally out of the blue.”

12. Many kids have imaginary friends, but they typically don’t share them.

“My 2-year-old daughter used to scream in the night,” wrote Jimslam. “She told my wife and I it was because she was visited by a lady. A few weeks later, she stopped screaming. Offhandedly, I asked if the lady had stopped coming. She answered ‘No, she’s just nice now. Her name is Shelia. She sleeps in my bed sometimes.’”
“A year later, my youngest daughter turned 2 and started having the same screaming fits. Talking to her, she described the same lady named Shelia.”
That would be creepy enough, but it doesn’t end there.
“Skip forward three years. We’d never talked with our kids about it, figuring there had to be some active imaginations and sibling storytelling involved. It hadn’t come up in at least two years. We moved with our three kids, including a 2.5-year-old son. On his first night in the new house, he asked, ‘Where will Shelia sleep now?’”

12 Haircare Mistakes You’re Probably Making (And What To Do Instead)

Bad hair days happen to everyone from time to time. We’ve all had that cowlick that just won’t go down, waves or curls that turn to frizz as soon as we walk outside, split ends that stick out of braids, or strands that have a dull appearance. Locks that look less than their best certainly don’t boost our confidence, but the problem usually goes away the next day.

But what if your bad hair days start to happen every day? If it seems like no matter what you do, you just can’t get your hair to look shiny and beautiful, you might want to start taking a hard look at your haircare routine. Something as simple as using the wrong brush for your hair type or damaging your hair with heat when you blow-dry could actually be wreaking havoc on the condition of your mane. They’re easy mistakes to make—but they can have long-lasting consequences on your tresses.

HealthyWay

So before you give up entirely and resign yourself to a lifetime of bad hair days, consider exactly how you’re treating your hair and what you can do to improve it. Here are some of the most common haircare mistakes to avoid (and the things you should do instead); along with them are some products that’ll help you make the right choice—they’re just a click (or tap) away.

Haircare Mistake No. 1: You use products loaded with harsh chemicals.

Do you pick up the cheapest bottles of shampoo and conditioner from the drug store? While there’s nothing wrong with trying to save a buck or two, many of these ultra-cheap haircare products (and even some of their more expensive counterparts) are loaded with harsh chemicals that can damage your hair.

Not every ingredient with a long name is bad for your hair, but there are a few to watch out for. Namely, sulfates. These are chemicals that do a really great job cleaning your hair. They’re so good at what they do, though, that they often strip your hair’s natural oils away in the process. Look for bottles that say “sulfate-free,” and avoid common sulfate ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, to keep your hair clean and gorgeous.

[products ids=’1084227,1084228′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 2: You wash your hair way too often.

Even if you’re using the very best shampoo available, washing your hair too frequently can come with some nasty repercussions. The fact is that the vast majority of people don’t need to wash their hair every single day. Over-shampooing removes the healthy oils from your scalp, leaving the skin dry and irritated and causing the hair to look tired and lifeless.

We’re not saying you should cut back on your shower schedule, just that you could probably stand to shampoo less often. Washing your hair every other day (or even every third day) is enough to keep it clean and healthy. On non-shampoo days, a simple rinse under warm water can rid your hair of any dust, debris, or product. If your hair looks a little greasy a day or two after your last wash, evenly spray some dry shampoo to absorb some of the oil and add volume. Dry shampoo is also an essential haircare product to use after a sweaty gym session. Once you have dry shampoo in your haircare tool kit, you’ll be amazed at just how long you can go between washing.

[products ids=’1084230,1084231′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 3: You don’t wash your hair often enough.

Infrequent washing can be just as bad as shampooing too often. And with the rise of the “no-poo” movement, in which people wean themselves off shampoo altogether, many women are starting to have chronically dirty hair.

Not only will unwashed hair look less than optimal, it can actually cause major problems for the scalp. The detergents in shampoo work to remove sebum, a waxy substance secreted by the glands in your skin. When healthy, sebum adds protection to the hair shaft and helps your strands look glossy. But when there’s a build-up, it causes the hair to stick together and look oily. Plus, sebum resists water, so it can be a struggle to remove if you wait too long.

Think you might have neglected your shampoo schedule for a day or two too long? Don’t worry—a strong shampoo with scalp treatment can get rid of the excess sebum and revive your hair. Use your fingertips to scrub it in, then rinse thoroughly.

[products ids=’1084234,1084235′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 5: You dry your hair with the wrong towel.

What do you do when you get out of the shower? If it involves vigorously rubbing and scrunching your hair with any random towel in your bathroom, then twisting it up into a tight turban to dry, you might be damaging your hair.

Wet hair is significantly more fragile than dry hair and needs to be handled delicately. Rather than scrunching and squeezing the water out, use your fingertips to shake out the excess water. You can also blot hair with a soft cotton fabric to help get the moisture out. It might take more time before it dries completely, but your hair will be in much better condition.

The towel you use matters. Old terry cloth towels tend to be too rough to use on wet hair. Plus, the tiny thread loops in the fabric act like hooks for your hair, causing major frizz. Switch to a microfiber hair towel, which is gentler on your strands and helps minimize flyaways.

[products ids=’1084237,1084238′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 4: Using a blow dryer that’s too hot.

Few people enjoy sitting under a loud blow dryer for an extended period of time, so they use the hottest, most powerful setting to speed things up. That’s a major haircare no-no, though. Why? It can actually burn your hair! Even if you’re short on time, “fry drying” is not the answer to getting a quick style.

The best hairdryers have multiple heat and power settings. Always use the lowest setting when you go to dry your hair. Even though it takes longer to dry, your hair will look a lot smoother and stay healthier. Use the cool setting to lock in your style toward the end of your blowout.

[products ids=’1084315′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 5: You don’t protect your hair from heat.

Using the lowest setting on your hairdryer isn’t enough to safeguard your hair from heat damage. If you’re not using a thermal protection on your tresses, they can still get ruined from any amount of heat from your straightener, dryer, or curling iron.

Before you use any hot tool on your hair, spritz on some heat protection spray. While you generally want to evenly coat your hair with product, it’s not a bad idea to give the ends a little more love, as this is the part of the strand that’s most vulnerable to damage from heat.

The main purpose of a thermal protector spray is to shield your hair from the effects of high temperatures. However, it’s not a bad idea to get in the habit of spraying it on your hair every day, even if you’re not using heat to style, because thermal spray also gives your hair some extra protection from the elements and leaves a smooth finish.

[products ids=’1084291,1084294′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 6: You’re teasing your hair too much.

Big, voluminous hair is on trend. But since most of us weren’t born with naturally billowing locks, we rely on a trick of the trade to get a boost: teasing. We back comb our roots to make it look like we have plenty of dimension. It’s a totally harmless technique, right?

Wrong. While there’s nothing wrong with teasing your hair for an occasional special event, like a wedding or birthday party, backcombing your hair can harm the cuticles and leave the strands vulnerable to breakage. That daily va-va-voom from backcombing just isn’t worth the long-term damage to your hair.

With that being said, using a volume-boosting haircare product can give you locks that would make Dolly Parton jealous without incurring damage from over-teasing. Spray it into your roots, then blow-dry and style as usual for a voluminous finish.

[products ids=’1084295,1084296′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 7: You don’t protect your hair at night.

How does your hair look when you wake up in the morning? If it’s super tangled and you look like you just got out of a windstorm, you’re probably damaging your hair while you sleep—and causing yourself a major styling headache in the a.m.

Just like old terry cloth towels, your run-of-the-mill pillowcase usually isn’t the best choice when it comes to protecting your hair. Switch to a silk pillowcase. It doesn’t grip the hair like cotton or synthetic fibers, so it’s more likely that you’ll wake up with smooth, tangle-free locks. Plus, silk usually has a cool feeling to it, creating a pleasant sensation as soon as your head hits the pillow.

You could always opt for a silk night cap instead. It will offer even more protection and increase the longevity of your style. Hey, blowouts don’t come cheap—make sure you’re making the most of your styling investment by treating your tresses well while you catch your beauty sleep.

[products ids=’1084298,1084299′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 8: You’re too rough with your tangles.

Knots are frustrating—we totally get it. Sometimes hair can get so tangled that we aggressively try to brush all the knots out, usually losing a lot of hair in the process. Ugh!

It’s worth cultivating some patience when it comes to snarls in your mane, though. Being gentle as you try to remove knots can help you avoid broken strands and hair loss. One tool that can help is a detangling comb. These wide-tooth combs are designed to untangle knots a couple of strands at a time without ripping through your hair. They’re definitely a smarter choice than a boar’s-hair brush when it comes to grooming your hair.

Detangling spray can also help loosen up even the most stubborn of tangles. It lubricates the strands so you can work through the knots without damaging your hair. Bonus: Detangling spray can also act as a leave-in conditioner that won’t weigh down your hair. Talk about a double whammy for your haircare!

[products ids=’1084301,1084302′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 9: You forget to use serum.

If you’re into skincare, you might already have a favorite serum that you use on your face every day. But did you know that serum is just as important for your hair as it is for your complexion? It acts as a mask for your strands and scalp, helping minimize dryness and frizz.

Hair serum also infuses your mane with a luster you can’t get from other products. Apply it with your fingertips, then run a large paddle brush through your hair to help distribute the serum evenly. When it comes to hair serum, a little goes a long way. You’ll notice an immediate improvement in your hair’s condition and appearance once you incorporate this product into your haircare routine.

[products ids=’1084304′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 10: You’re not careful enough with your ponytails.

Whoever invented the ponytail is a genius in our books. This easy-breezy style helps you look polished under any circumstance, whether you just finished a workout or you’re running late to a job interview.

But the problem with this simple style is that it can cause broken strands if you’re not careful. Avoid ponytails that are too high or too tight, which can stress the hair. And choose your ponytail holder wisely. We recommend tossing out those old-school elastics (you know, the ones that always get tangled up in your hair) and opting for hair coils, instead. They hold your hair in place, and they slip out so easily, you’d never know they were there. Choose a set that matches your hair color for a sleeker look.

[products ids=’1084305,1084306′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 11: You never deep condition your hair.

Daily conditioning is a great first step to keeping your hair healthy, but if you’re not deep conditioning at least a couple of times each month, you’re making a big mistake.

Between washing, removing knots, and styling, we put our hair through the wringer. Deep conditioning not only repairs some of the daily damage to your hair, it also helps prevent future breakage by strengthening your strands.

We suggest making a weekly self-care ritual out of your deep conditioning treatment. Generously slather on deep conditioner, lop your hair in a loose bun atop your head, and cover it with a shower cap. Then sit back, and let it soak in while you watch a movie. Your hair (and your mind) will feel completely restored after you wash out the treatment.

[products ids=’1084308,1084309′ type=full]

Haircare Mistake No. 12: You don’t protect your hair from the sun.

You wouldn’t go out on a bright sunny day without sunscreen, right? Of course not. So then why do most us still go out in the sun without protecting our hair? Just like skin, hair is vulnerable to damage from harmful UV rays. Overexposure to the sun can wear away our healthy oils and permanently damage the hair. Talk about a way to ruin your fun in the sun.

Keep your tresses safe by applying a conditioning spray with UV protection before you spend a day outdoors. A stylish hat can also come in handy, not only for shielding your hair from the elements, but for hiding bad hair days. But we doubt you’ll be having very many of those going forward, now that you’re not committing some of the most common haircare mistakes. Happy styling!

Everything You Need To Throw A Halloween Party With A Transylvania Twist

Halloween’s probably our favorite holiday—at least, if we’re not counting National Spaghetti Day—and there’s no better way to celebrate than by throwing a big party. It’s a great excuse to dress up in a ridiculous costume, play some games, and eat an assortment of brain-shaped foods.
Of course, to throw a really great party, you need appropriate decorations. We searched Amazon to find the best affordable Halloween party gear, and we came up with quite a few gems. If you’re preparing to throw a monster mash of your own, here’s everything you’ll need to get started.

1. Nothing says Halloween like butcher’s knives and…cutting boards, we guess?

Here’s the perfect Halloween gift for the bloodthirsty cannibal who has everything. This personalized cutting board celebrates the dark holiday with eco-friendly bamboo construction. That’s right; you can eat the neighbors and save the environment at the same time.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Pick from a variety of limited-edition etchings, and supply your family’s last name for a special touch. We’d recommend skipping that part if you or the recipient are lying low for any major unsolved crimes.

2. Make no bones about it; we’ll take sugar in our coffee.

There’s room for one final fright when you serve your guests their dessert coffee. Pick up this set of stainless steel sugar spoons and stick one in the bowl.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Your guests will toss in a few scoops and stir…only to realize, as they draw the spoon out, that they’ve been using a skull for a coffee spoon! Or, rather, they’ve been using a spoon-shaped kind of like a skull! Either way, the scare should run right up against the edge of a lawsuit, without quite crossing over. Hopefully.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/FOXAS-Stainless-Stirring-Everyday-Designed/dp/B01IT8926W/”]Stainless Steel Skull Sugar Spoons, $12.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

3. Hoo hoo who’s ready to party?

The only thing scarier than the hoot of an owl on a moonlit night is the hoot of a skeleton owl at your own Halloween party. We can’t help with the sound effects, but we’ve got you on the decorations.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You might remember Crazy Bonez as the company that brought you life-size plastic skeleton rats, cats, and even snakes. Well, they’re back at it, this time with an undead owl decoration that’s ideal decor for any fright-fest. Set this little creep up on the bookshelf and watch your guests back slowly out of the room. It’ll be a hoot!

4. Injectable gelatin desserts? Now that’s creepy!

It’s not a party without gelatin desserts, are we right? If you want to get really wild this Halloween, you could even try pudding shots…but we can’t condone that kind of decadence.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Anyway, give your dessert table a darkly medical tinge by serving up your gelatin and pudding in big plastic syringes. Have fun squirting gunk in each others’ mouths, and play the Haunted Hospital vibe right to the hilt.
Note: Not for intravenous use.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Party-Syringe-Shooters-Syringes-Medium/dp/B004QHQPCU”]Party Syringe Shooters, $16.42 from Amazon[/link-button]

5. “Whaddaya got there, Dracula, a cold glass of sweet tea?”

We don’t care what the rules of the Buffyverse say; real vampires should only consume blood. If you’re a purist like us, be sure to invest in a few of these blood-bag drink cups. They’re realistic enough to preserve the vampiric illusion. Choose a set of 5, 10, or 20, depending on how many Draculas you expect at your party.

HealthyWay
Amazon

This set comes with a handy-dandy filling syringe, too, so you won’t have to get cherry cola all over the kitchen while you’re putting the refreshments together. No more Draculas with soda cans. We’re talking to you, Whedon.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/WYNK-Parties-Halloween-Vampire-Syringe/dp/B01NH33J19/”]Blood Bags Drink Cups, $11.98 from Amazon[/link-button]

6. “And the skelly goes to…”

Everybody loves a costume contest, but what’s a contest without a prize? This ghoulish statuette makes a memorable award for your contest’s first-place finisher. It features a skeleton (duh) with his head in his hands—literally—cast in brilliant gold (okay, fine, gold-painted plastic).

HealthyWay
Amazon

For under $7, it’s a nice pickup to bring some added pizzazz to your Halloween shindig. Everybloody will love it.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Amscan-Costume-Skeleton-Plastic-Trophy/dp/B000UWGWHS/”]Amscan Best Costume Skeleton Plastic Trophy, $6.90 from Amazon[/link-button]

7. Add some ghoulish fun to your refreshments table.

Cola tastes great, but it isn’t exactly scary. Halloween parties must be scary—or at least give a nod to the nightmarish. These soda-bottle stickers are freakier than the amount of corn syrup in your favorite 2-liter soft drink.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Offer your guests a taste of “Ye Olde Spider Venom” or the “Zombie Virus” itself. Just place these graphic stickers over the original label on your party beverage and let the fun begin. Best case scenario: The guests are too frightened to imbibe, and you get to keep the soft drinks for yourself.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Morbid-Enterprises-Halloween-Slapsticker-Decoration/dp/B003PSQPVM”]Halloween Slapsticker Soda Decorations, $9.99 from Amazon[/link-button]

8. Light your way through dark dance floors with bracelets that emit a ghostly glow.

Lots of people are afraid of the dark. Good. That makes it easier to set the ambiance at your next Halloween party. Of course, you can’t have people walking into each other and stubbing their toes on the fireplace. You do need some light.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Hand out these glowing LED bracelets at the door and get this party started. (You should probably provide other light sources, too. In fact, you definitely should not depend on LED bracelets to light an entire darkened house. That is not safe.)
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Bracelets-Fluorescence-Multicolor-Birthdays-Halloween/dp/B07FQQ9JV4/”]Multicolor LED Bracelets, $14.97 from Amazon[/link-button]

9. Who can wield these Medallions of Horror?

There’s no Halloween costume in the world that can’t be improved by a glowing LED necklace. This set of 15 plastic medallions covers all the bases of the season’s freakings. You’ve got your angry Jack-O-Lanterns, your friendly ghosts, and even your…pirate ships?

HealthyWay
Amazon

We guess pirates are still scary. At any rate, these flashing LED pendants add an ambient glow to any darkened party room. Kids love them, too. Toss them into trick-or-treat bags or hand them out to your party guests. That should be enough to keep the evil spirits at bay.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074BV191W”]LED Halloween Necklaces, $17.59 from Amazon[/link-button]

10. Candy alone can be too much of a good thing. Here’s a party favor that’ll fill the gap.

Remember Slinkies? Oddly enough, we could ask that question to everyone going back to our great-grandparents…but we’re asking you. It’s hard to explain how a bit of plastic spring can be so satisfying, but in an age of fidget spinners, maybe there’s no mystery there.

HealthyWay
Amazon

You can’t give your guests candy alone. You’ll make them sick! Supplement their goodie bags with these Halloween-themed “Magic Springs.” We can’t call them Slinkies for reasons of copyright law, but you know how they work.
[link-button href=”https://www.amazon.com/Fun-Express-Halloween-Classroom-Giveaways/dp/B01LZZ9XX9/”]Halloween Magic Springs, $14 from Amazon[/link-button]

11. Don’t be afraid of assembling the goody bags.

This kit does it for you. It’s a 100-piece set of glow-in-the-dark Halloween toys, including creepy-crawly plastic bugs, eyeball-themed bouncy balls, and slip-on witch fingers. And did we mention it all glows in the dark? It all glows in the dark.

This grab-bag has pretty much everything you’d want for a primo Halloween favor bag. It’s all non-toxic, too, although we don’t recommend eating any of it. Come to think of it, these probably aren’t great for small children or anyone with a taste for glow-in-the-dark plastic. For everyone else, though, they’re great!

12. Maybe we won’t have a second serving after all…

Serve up your Halloween dinner on a set of porcelain salad plates that feature lovely designs reminiscent of Morticia Addams’ finest lace. The designs include a skull, a black cat, a haunted mansion, and a witch in flight, all in the style of “Wiccan Lace.” We’re not sure what separates Wiccan lace from regular lace, but either way, these designs are gorgeous.

These are well-crafted, reusable dinner plates that will last you year after year. Shoot, you don’t even have to save them for just Halloween. Break them out early on October 1 to celebrate National Lace Day.

13. Serve up your Halloween candy with vintage flair.

Halloween is all about candy. Sure, there are the chills and thrills, but most of us could take those or leave them. Candy, on the other hand, is the real must-have item.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Why not give your guests what they’re here for with a little bit of style? This vintage Halloween candy bowl depicts a grinning cartoon cat (black, of course), seated inside a half-headed Jack-O-Lantern. The result is more whimsical than scary, but as long as your guests get their sugar fix, they’ll be happy either way.

14. Ding dong, the witch is dead—but the cupcakes are still delicious.

Aren’t you sick of conventional Halloween cupcake toppers? We’ve seen enough pumpkins, skulls, and shrouded ghosts to last us a thousand Samhain Eves. However, until today, we’ve never seen a cake topper like this one.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They’re essentially little plastic witch legs. There’s kind of a Wizard of Oz vibe here, with the feet and legs of a sticking out witch (possibly of a wicked nature and eastern location), but the connotation is more that these witches dove right in. Either way, this will take your party treats further than the same old skull toppers (or aforementioned spider rings) everyone’s seen before.

15. “Excuse me, where’s the little ghoul’s room?”

The bathroom: It’s arguably even more important than the kitchen for a good party. Still, when you have a bunch of elaborately costumed strangers in your home, you don’t want to spend all night pointing out the restroom door.
HealthyWay

16. We’d hate to meet the spider who made these webs.

Artificial spider webs are to Halloween what silver tinsel is to Christmas. Now, ask yourself: Where do you find your tinsel? It’s not like you can pop on down to the Town Tinselry after work.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Nope, you’ve got to go to Amazon. The same is true for your Halloween webbing. This manageable package from Fun World stretches out into more than 800 feet of cobwebs! With that kind of volume, you and a friend could hop into a two-person spider costume and still pose at scale. Now, where can we find a two-person spider costume?

17. Everything is spookier by candlelight…

But who needs the fire risk? Plus, there’s all that wax to clean up when the party’s over. You can always go for LED candles, but they never look quite real enough for the creepy ambiance of a Halloween party…at least, not until now.

HealthyWay

LED Lytes Candles are made from real wax, with a genuine dripped-over texture. They just don’t have the dangerous parts, like the wick and the flame. They’re little flickering LED bulbs that imitate real candlelight perfectly. Even better, they won’t blow out when the seance reaches its climax.

18. “Worst of all were the eyes, the flashing eyes in the dark.”

Scare the tears out of your party guests by setting up these Peep n’ Peepers lights up in every dark corner. Just don’t tell them they’re called “Peep n’ Peepers.” That name kind of ruins the mood, when you think about it.

19. Build a truly spooky selfie station.

Look, no one under the age of 30 is coming to your party if you don’t have a selfie station. Here’s a simple, low-cost solution. It’s a 5-foot-by-7-foot drop cloth that you can hang from your professional-quality light stands…or just tape to the wall for the duration of the party.

This one is designed to cover your standard folding party tables, famous from generations of elementary school gatherings. You’ll recognize the feel of the slippery, thin plastic from your own childhood—or, if you are, in fact, a child now, you’ll make a holiday memory that’ll last a lifetime. These hanging decorations let you enjoy the glitter without the mess. You get an assortment of skulls, spiders, bats, and crows, perfect for adorning your party room. The product description notes that it’s perfect for “Halloween…or any other themed events,” but let’s be honest: If you’re using these for something other than Halloween, you’ve got real issues.
Each pack comes with one “chandelier” piece and 28 other hanging cutouts. For around $11, it’s a pretty fantastic value.

They’re made with high-quality, durable latex, and they’re ideal party favors for younger guests. For extra fun, fill them with about 80 percent helium to make them float mid-air. The rubber material has a slight synthetic odor, so unwrap them a few days before the event to give them time to air out (so to speak).

29. This cute party dress has a macabre flourish.

At first glance, it’s a cute little cocktail dress adorned with flowers; look closer, and you’ll see the skulls and crossbones. Muhahaha.

HealthyWay

It’s made with soft satin, and at under $30 (prices vary with sizing), it’s an outstanding value. We really love the big black bow-tie design and the halter neckline. Per the user reviews, the sizing is accurate—which is unusual by Amazon standards—and a stretch panel on the back allows for a comfortable fit. Pair it with a petticoat, and you’re ready to shake your bones on the dancefloor.

30. Make sure that your party isn’t dead on arrival.

Nobody really sends paper invitations anymore, and that’s a shame. Sure, you can save a few bucks by inviting your friends on social media, but if you really want to throw a classic party, take the extra step and send out a few postcards.

HealthyWay
Amazon

These coffin-shaped cards help your guests plan for your shindig, and they perfectly walk the line between cute and grim (it’s a pretty wide line, now that we think of it). Each card has places for date, time, place, details, and an RSVP. They’re printed on durable cardstock with a matte finish. You also get a set of eye-catching blood-red envelopes.

31. This toilet topper isn’t great for arachnophobes.

Peel it and place it onto the top of your toilet lid (not the actual seat). It shows a variety of venomous spiders climbing out of the commode—or into it, we suppose. That depends on your perspective.

HealthyWay
Amazon

In any case, it’s sure to scare the pants off your guests in the one room where that’s actually appropriate. After the party, it removes easily without leaving any residue. One reviewer notes that it’s “not very realistic,” but in our book, that’s actually a plus. Be sure to check the sizing; if you’ve got an especially large toilet, this sticker might run a bit small.

32. Enjoy a candlelit party without the fire hazard.

If you’re sticking fairly close to this list, you’ve got an assortment of paper decorations, faux cobwebs, and other highly flammable stuff. Candles probably aren’t the best idea.

HealthyWay
Amazon

Fortunately, LED candles exist, and they’re the next best thing to actual flame. This 12-piece kit gives you plenty of soft light for a Halloween party, and they’ve got built-in timers to prevent the batteries from running down. Not that that’s much of a concern—each provides about 60 hours of light on a single CR2032 battery. The LED “flames” flicker, providing a realistic effect, and they’re still quite useful when the holiday’s over.

33. What’s a Halloween party without a nice serving of brains?

Maybe we should say, “braaaaaaaaiiiins.” This plastic mold lets you make your own brain-shaped gelatin molds, perfect for freaking out kids or eliciting a light chuckle from adults (man, we’ve become way too jaded).

HealthyWay
Amazon

Add in your favorite flavor of Jell-O, and you’ll have a jiggly, slightly horrifying snack. This line from the product description sums up the appeal nicely: “What’s the best way to freak people out? Serve them a gelatin brain.” We certainly can’t argue with that. Note that the same manufacturer also offers heart-shaped and hand-shaped gelatin molds, so with a bit of creativity, you can make an entire organ-shaped Jell-O buffet.

34. When you really want your party to “crush it,” this prop is awesome.

It’s an officially licensed piece of Wizard of Oz merchandise, and more importantly, it’s a hilarious conversation piece. The two stuffed legs stick out from underneath any heavy object—we recommend tucking them under a piano or kitchen appliance.

HealthyWay
Amazon

They feature the ruby-red slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East. Dress up your dog as Toto—or simply throw on Toto’s “Africa”—and you’ve got a great theme party going. These are a simple accent, but you’ll find yourself bringing them out every Halloween from now on.

35. If you’re really looking for something grim, these asylum scene setters should do the trick.

The kit includes “two large wall posters of a long, bloody hallway in a decrepit sanitarium with the images of a vacated wheelchair and corpse on a gurney, accented by assorted cardstock cutouts of rats, knives, murderous nurses, ‘Psycho Ward’ signs, and more.” What better way to show your party guests that you’re actually certifiably committed to spooking them with the most elaborately decorated Halloween party ever?

HealthyWay

While the wall decoration is a horrific masterpiece, we really love the cardstock cutouts, which look great propped up in windows. If you’re trying to fill up some empty wall space, this kit is the ghastly touch you need.

36. After seeing It, we’re all a bit coulrophobic.

Coulrophobia, by the way, means an irrational fear of clowns. We’re pretty sure that phobia doesn’t technically exist—no fear of clowns is truly irrational.

HealthyWay

In case you’re living under a rock (or in the depths of a haunted sewer), the 2017 film It brought clowns back into the mainstream. The main villain, Pennywise, is a figure of unspeakable evil, so naturally, someone made a cardboard cutout of him in all his demonic glory. We recommend setting it up right by your front door; as guests arrive, you can film their reactions.

37. Start your own coven with these witch caps.

You know that someone is going to show up at your party without a costume. Maybe they’ll have a nametag with their name on it, and they’ll say that they’re “going as themselves.” Lame. Seriously, what’s wrong with people? You can’t take five seconds to get a cheap costume together?

HealthyWay

If anyone tries that trick at your party, you’ll be prepared. Order a set of witch caps, and if someone shows up in their street clothes, hand them a hat. Now they’re going as “the wicked witch of being boring at parties.” Maybe they’ll think twice next Halloween.

Symptoms Of OCD Most People Don’t Know

“Every minute of every day I had terrifying thoughts of harming myself that I could not understand to save my life.”
Prior to her diagnosis less than a year ago, Orlando resident Kate Feder, recalls spending months afraid of leaving her apartment. “All I wanted to do was sleep because that was the only time that the thoughts weren’t suffocating me,” the 23-year-old tells HealthyWay.
Mental health, like everything else, exists on a spectrum. But far from the rosy-colored depictions we see in popular culture, symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are intrusive and unwanted, often inhibiting a person’s day-to-day functioning. Imagine feeling overwhelming uncertainty all day, every day—a constant what if? humming in your mind.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Rawpixel

According to the National Institute of Health, 1.2 percent of Americans over the age of 18 have been diagnosed with OCD in the past year, yet there is still a lot that is unknown about the disorder. We reached out to experts and people living with OCD to dispel common myths and misconceptions. Here is what you should know.

What is OCD?

Broadly defined, OCD is a chronic, long-lasting disorder characterized by uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) like an extreme fear of germs, having things in perfect order, unwanted thoughts involving sex, religion, or harm.
“Often, people come in with anxiety, depression, or eating disorders, but don’t realize that OCD is either underlying or comorbid with another disorder,” says Kate Dansie, master of social work, a clinical therapist from Maryland who specializes in OCD.
https://twitter.com/ASoSblog/status/1044130545893019648
It’s often characterized by behaviors (compulsions) that the person feels the urge to endlessly repeat. This can look like excessive cleaning or hand washing or repeatedly checking on things like whether a door is locked or the oven still on.
While many of us are prone to double checking things, those with OCD will spend an inordinate amount of time performing these behaviors or rituals. “In order to be diagnostically classified as having OCD, the obsessions and compulsions have to be time-consuming (greater than one hour a day) or cause significant distress or impairment,” explains psychotherapist Jennifer Welbel, who treats patients in her Illinois center for anxiety.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/KatarzynaBialasiewicz

“Many people think of the television character Monk or Jack Nicholson’s character in as Good As It Gets,” says Boston freelance writer Laura Kiesel, who was diagnosed at age 14 with Pure-O, a variant of the disorder where there are no obvious outward compulsions—only distressing mental images.
She explains that OCD is often portrayed in the media as a person having repetitive behaviors like hand-washing or counting steps, but these don’t convey her own experience: intrusive, disturbing thoughts that made her put off therapy for fear of being committed.
Similarly, Feder says she created compulsions out of fear to help ease the pain of her thoughts. “These compulsions ended up becoming an issue that I couldn’t stop acting out, and I knew I needed to get help.”

Worries are not the same as obsessions.

We all have a habit of conflating small worries with major concerns, but according to Feder, the biggest myth about OCD is that it’s a personality quirk that makes you want to organize or color-code things around your home. She wishes people understood that the disorder isn’t some “cute” term to throw around for attention.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/PeopleImages

“That is the farthest thing from the truth and continues to perpetuate a stigma that is completely untrue and hurtful to those who actually suffer from this crippling disorder.”
To qualify as having obsessions in OCD, they must be recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or impulses that cause distress and are experienced as intrusive and unwanted. “I often have clients tell me that they are ‘obsessing’ over something and therefore, they must have OCD,” says Welbel.
https://twitter.com/vikingunicorn/status/1044164636206092289
If a person has a fear of contamination but is able to wash their hands a few times and then move on with their day, then they would qualify as having tendencies but not have a formal diagnosis. Likewise, an individual that has a fixation on something like video games does not necessarily have the disorder.
Anna Prudovski, an Ontario psychologist and clinical director of Turning Point Psychological Services, defines OCD as a sliding scale or a continuum with hardly noticeable symptoms on the one end and extremely severe presentation on the other end.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/PeopleImages

OCD can be mild in form, where the compulsions do not greatly impact a person’s life. The other side of the scale is the opposite.
“At its worst, [the disorder] is debilitating,” says Dansie, “with people spending hours upon hours on rituals in an attempt to neutralize the perceived threat.”

Overlooked Symptoms of OCD

According to experts, these are six of the most commonly overlooked signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Intrusive Thoughts or Images

“Many OCD sufferers have no visible rituals and it is impossible for others to identify the OCD,” says Prudovski. But this type of OCD is no less severe. “The person with Pure-O OCD [as Kiesel was diagnosed with] may be preoccupied with obsessions and mental compulsions every waking hour, which leads to tremendous suffering.”

HealthyWay

Difficulty Concentrating

It may look similar to ADHD, learning disabilities, or even just lack of interest. But in fact, this symptom is related to the person giving constant internal attention to their obsessions and urges. And while OCD and ADHD seem related on the surface, there can be enormous consequences if mistaken for each other, as treatment differs for each.

Reassurance-Seeking

This is rarely associated with OCD, but constant reassurance-seeking, where no amount is enough, is very often a sign of OCD. In such cases, seeking reassurance is a compulsion. For example, a person obsessed with a burglar breaking into their home will continually check the lock on the door in an attempt to reassure themselves.

HealthyWay

Preoccupation With Certain Numbers

Some people with OCD have numerous superstitions and so-called magical thinking. They are preoccupied with doing things a certain number of times or avoiding specific numbers. For example, Prudovski notes that a person may avoid number 6, and also numbers 5 and 7 as they are next to number 6, and also all the numbers that can be divided by 6, etc. This compulsion may not be visible to others, but the sufferer is preoccupied with how many times they pump the shampoo bottle, what number the volume of the radio is, or what temperature they are “allowed” to put their oven on.

Fear and Avoidance

A symptom especially common in people who have Harm OCD, who are afraid to harm others. They may go to great lengths to avoid being next to children, relatives, persons of a specific gender, or specific places. As Charles Elliott, PhD, a clinical psychologist and a founding fellow in the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, explained in an interview with PsychCentral, “It makes your world smaller and fosters your fears. The more you avoid, the worse things get.”

HealthyWay
iStock.com/fizkes

Being Chronically Late

According to Laura Dabney, MD, a psychiatrist from Virginia Beach, chronic tardiness is due to needing to perform rituals or behaviors before being able to leave the house or wherever they find themselves in that moment. As highlighted in this HealthBoards thread, people with OCD can also become anxious about arriving somewhere at the wrong time or forgetting something they needed.

OCD can easily be misdiagnosed.

In some cases, the symptoms may not be impairing enough and can easily be misdiagnosed. In fact, one 2015 study found that half of obsessive-compulsive disorder cases were misdiagnosed by primary care physicians.
Unfortunately, therapists who aren’t familiar with OCD may diagnose someone with depression or even send someone to the hospital, despite that person having no intent to hurt themselves. As Dansie notes, “This is misdiagnosis at its worst!”

HealthyWay
iStock.com/Rawpixel

According to Jamie McNally, a licensed professional counselor and owner of Sycamore Counseling Services in Michigan, many practitioners are also not particularly aware of the nuances of the disorder, confusing Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) with OCD.

Key differences between OCD and OCPD

The obsessions that manifest in OCD aren’t always rational and can even seem bizarre. “Typically, people with OCD want to be rid of these thoughts and actions,” says McNally.
On the other hand, an individual with OCPD may also be highly focused on order, but this presents as a rigidity or stubbornness to have things a certain way because of a strict moral code, a belief that theirs is the “only right way,” or as a result of high levels of perfectionism.

HealthyWay
iStock.com/gilaxia

McNally is adamant that more attention should be given to these different diagnoses, as misdiagnosis can easily occur, and this has critical implications for treatment.

How is OCD treated?

Welbel recommends seeking a therapist trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), as the most evidence-based effective method for dealing with OCD symptoms. “It involves gradually confronting the [person’s] feared situations, impulses, urges, or thoughts.”

HealthyWay
iStock.com/FilippoBacci

By doing so, she says the goal is that they learn the following:

  • Our feared situations, outcomes, or triggers are not as dangerous and scary as we initially thought.
  • Our anxious feelings and body sensations are not as bad as we make them out to be.
  • We are capable of tolerating the anxiety, risk, and uncertainty that we have avoided for so long.
  • Our feared outcomes usually don’t occur; and if they do, we can manage it better than we thought.

“[The therapy] involves facing your obsessions—fears—head on and not acting out compulsions,” says Feder, who has tried the treatment for the past several months and found it to be helpful. “[ERP] is extremely scary for those with OCD, but it’s the best form of therapy possible.”

It’s important to realize that the obsessions and compulsions are serving a purpose, explains Dabney. “They are there for an unconscious reason.” For many, the reason is to cover an unwanted or unacceptable feeling, she notes. “The brain can not focus on facts and feelings at the same time.” In fact, past studies have shown that being highly sensitive to guilt plays a significant role in checking-related OCD symptoms.
“Treatment would then consist of helping the patient normalize whatever feeling they are avoiding.” Dabney gives the example of a child who feels guilty for being angry at a parent they love and consequently starts using obsessions and compulsions to distract from their anger. “A therapist would help [the child] to realize that anger at those we love is normal.”

Aside from her therapy sessions, Feder says she also takes an SSRI (Lexapro) at a high dosage to help lower her anxiety—a main contributor to OCD. According to the International OCD Foundation, those who benefit from medication usually see their OCD symptoms reduced by 40 to 60 percent.
That said, it’s not the definitive answer for everyone. “I was on medication for only a short while—about six months—and I didn’t react well to it,” says Kiesel, who was initially diagnosed in her teens. “While it did help some with decreasing the frequency of my obsessive thoughts and relieve some of the companion anxiety, the side effects ultimately outweighed the benefits.”

Breaking Away From Stigma

“What ultimately helped me [as a teen], as strange as it sounds, was joining and becoming very active in drama club in high school,” notes Kiesel. “Having something to distract and redirect my busy mind … as well as a creative and expressive outlet, was crucial to my recovery.”
While she is no longer in theater, Kiesel says her writing now serves a similar purpose and has since written about her experience. “I also think not feeling guilty or scared of these thoughts has allowed them to not have the control they had over my life.”

Overall, she’s adamant that greater awareness and education on OCD would help break the stigma surrounding the disorder.
Feder agrees: “People who are actually diagnosed with OCD do not go around bragging about it or talking about it in a funny way,” she says. “It’s a far more serious issue that deserves to be spoken about respectfully.”

Moon Signs Are A Huge Part Of Astrology Most Of Us Didn't Know About

Flip open any newspaper or women’s magazine and you’re bound to find a page or two filled with horoscopes and other astrological predictions. Many of us look to astrology for a glimpse of what’s to come, or at least how we should respond to it. In fact, Pew Research found that one in four American adults believes in astrology. It can be a fun way to learn about who you are and imagine what the future holds. But there’s more to astrology than just reading your daily horoscope.
Moon signs are one of the most powerful factors when it comes to understanding astrology, but chances are you’ve never taken a deep dive into them.

So, why should you care about moon signs, specifically? Well, while you probably think more about your own zodiac sign than any other astrological entity, the moon is actually the anchor of astrology. It is believed to represent the more internal parts of who we are as humans including our personal desires and emotional lives. As with zodiac signs, there are 12 possible moon signs. This breakdown will help you keep it all straight.
[sul title=”What determines your moon sign?” subheader=”Finding your moon sign goes beyond googling your birthday.”]
At one point or another, you may have looked up your zodiac sign and determined what it is based on your date of birth. The signs are broken up into the following categories, which are associated with the four elements:

  • Fire: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. These signs are active and a little emotionally impulsive.
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. These signs strive for emotional stability and security.
  • Air: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. These signs are curious and communicative and tend to intellectualize their feelings.
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. These signs feel deeply and tend to have intense, though potentially hidden, emotional lives.

Why 12 signs? According to a University of Wisconsin resource on stars and constellations, “The Zodiac is the ring of constellations that the Sun seems to pass through each year as the Earth orbits around it.” Given that we watch the sun and moon up in the same sky, the moon “passes through” these constellations, too, meaning your moon sign will be one of the 12 zodiac signs, but it might not be the same as your sun sign.
Claire Comstock-Gay, a Sagittarius and the weekly astrologist for The Cut, says that our sun sign shapes our personality and helps define who we are in a broad sense. But sun signs don’t explain everything about us. That’s where our moon signs come into play.

Unlike your sun sign, which is determined by the day of the year on which you were born, your moon sign is determined by the exact time—down to the minute—and location of your birth. This means determining your moon sign can be a little trickier. Amanda Renee, founder of Astrological Alignment, says the moon changes zodiac signs much faster than the sun (because, well, the moon has a much smaller orbit around the earth, right?)—visiting all 12 signs in approximately 28 days.
“The easiest way to determine your moon sign is to receive a personalized natal birth chart,” she tells HealthyWay. “To obtain this information, simply use a birth chart calculator. I personally use CafeAstrology.com. It is very user-friendly. Start by entering your date, time, and location of birth, click submit, and your entire natal chart will generate before your eyes!”

But what if you don’t know exactly when you were born?

“Not everyone knows what time they were born. What happens if this is you?” Amanda Renee acknowledges a question she’s heard before. “Not to fret—I may have a few solutions that could help you in determining your moon sign…”

1. Reach out.

“Always start by asking close friends and relatives,” says Amanda Renee. “They can help you pinpoint the time of your birth and perhaps, at minimum, figure out the general time frame. If friends or family can identify that you were born, say, in the wee hours of the morning versus in the afternoon, you can figure out your moon sign.”

HealthyWay
iStock.com/GeorgeRudy

She goes on to give this example: “Because we know that the moon enters a new sign approximately every two and a half days, you can contact an astrologer or use astrological software to look up the moon’s positioning on and around your birthday. If you were born in the morning and the moon changed positions in the afternoon, you would know to choose the zodiac sign the moon was stationed in during the morning time.”

2. Make it official.

Unable to get the details from family or family friends? “Contact the hospital where you were born to ask for a copy of your birth certificate,” Amanda Renee advises. “Not all hospitals keep record of your time of birth, but most do.”

HealthyWay
iStock.com/XiXinXing

This information may be available via the hospital or the bureau of vital statistics in the state where you were born. When you make the request, be clear that you want a copy that shows your time of birth, which is sometimes called a vault copy.

3. Use your powers of deduction.

If you’re not in a position to get information about your time of birth from relatives or a hospital, you can put in some legwork and let your heart be your guide.
“I must note that this will take a little work on your part, but I promise it is possible!” says Amanda Renee. “Start by contacting an expert astrologer or utilize free astrology software online. Your goal is to see what sign the moon could have possibly entered in the 24-hour period that is your birthday.”
[pullquote align=”center”]“In the early days of my astrological journey, I realized when comparing my sun sign to others, I would often feel that the compatibility or lack of compatibility was incorrect. This uncertainty is what prompted my exploration into moon signs and other natal chart comparisons.”
—Amanda Renee, Astrological Alignment[/pullquote]
If you’re using software, Amanda Renee says you should begin by entering whatever information you know about your birth and checking the moon sign at 12:01 a.m. “Continue entering different times of day, increasing in six-hour increments until you’ve gone through the full 24-hour cycle. Watch to see if the moon sign changes. If you are lucky, the moon didn’t change signs and you have automatically and successfully deduced your moon sign!”
What happens if the moon sign did change during your date of birth? “Well, we know that because the moon enters a new sign every two and a half days, you will only have the possibility of two signs to choose from,” says Amanda Renee. “Yay! Not as daunting as you may have thought, right?”

HealthyWay
iStock.com/PeopleImages

“The next part is completely reliant on you,” she says. “Read the description of each moon sign and choose which sign relates to you best. I am confident you will not choose incorrectly because we all possess the power of our moon’s natural feminine intuition. So use that moon intuition! You can’t fail!”
[sul title=”“I see the moon and the moon sees me…”” subheader=”More on Moon Signs, Astrology, and Relationships”]
“Astrology is a language of movement and relationships,” says Comstock-Gay. She emphasizes that the application of astrology is not just about each planet’s placement in your birth chart, but also the continued movement of the planets over time and the relationships between the planets as they move.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/gui00878

“It’s helpful to know your moon sign, but more helpful to think about how your moon and sun and other planets interact because each one is informed by the other,” she says.
Once you know your moon sign, it empowers you to do a few things. According to Susan Miller, New York astrologist and owner of the popular website AstrologyZone, your moon sign can help predict your emotional state and how you’ll see the world around you.
“The moon is the repository of your dreams, of your greatest desires, because you kind of have it locked in your heart. You may not share it with anyone—or you might. It depends on the person,” says Miller. “The moon teaches you to look back, so it has all of your memories and your fondest memories are in there. The moon also makes us sentimental. When we lose someone, all the memories come flooding back.”
HealthyWay

Comstock-Gay also touches on the importance of the emotional world that’s represented by moon signs.
“Your moon sign shapes your deepest emotional self. It can highlight not just how you feel your emotions, but how you express them and work through them,” she says. “Are you comfortable expressing your feelings or do you prefer to bury them? Is your inner life steady or is it chaotic? Which experiences are most emotionally painful for you and which allow you to open up, trust, and be vulnerable? These are the kinds of questions your moon sign might point to the answer to.”
If you’ve ever thought that your sun sign doesn’t quite match your understanding of yourself, that’s because the sun sign alone isn’t the entire story according to Comstock-Gay.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/m-gucci

“When your emotions surprise you by feeling more intense than you think they should, or when they clash with the way you understand yourself, it can be useful to look toward the moon sign for answers,” says Comstock-Gay.
Amanda Renee can relate to this. “In the early days of my astrological journey, I realized when comparing my sun sign to others, I would often feel that the compatibility or lack of compatibility was incorrect. This uncertainty is what prompted my exploration into moon signs and other natal chart comparisons.”
[pullquote align=”center”]“Given that my son’s moon is in Pisces, he will always have a strong propensity towards inner reflection, being overly emotional at times and letting other people’s moods affect his, but with the help of my Capricorn moon, Pisces moon feels a strong sense of security, safety, and structure.”
—Amanda Renee, Astrological Alignment[/pullquote]
“For example, my son and I, on the surface, do not seem very compatible,” she shares. “I am a Gemini sun and he is a Taurus sun. Anyone who admires astrology would tell you these two signs completely do not go together, but if you were to compare our moon signs it would read something quite different. Once I was able to understand moon signs, I found that we are, in fact, very compatible!”
“My moon is in the sign of Capricorn: a very goal-oriented, regimented, and grounded earth sign, which is vastly different from that of the carefree, whimsical, knowledge-seeking woman my sun sign exudes to the rest of the world.  My son has a similar dichotomy in his own chart. He presents with a moon in the sign of Pisces. Represented by the symbol of two fish, his sign is a water element that embraces spirituality, mysticism, selflessness, and has pure motives but can be overly emotional. Outwardly, however, he may be interpreted as someone who is stubborn, possessive, and romantic because of his sun sign in Taurus. As you can see, once we add more depth and layers to the comparisons, it’s easy to understand where our sun signs don’t match, our moon signs do!”
[sul title=”Over the Moon” subheader=”What Your Moon Sign Means for Love in All Its Forms”]
Comstock-Gay acknowledges that feelings can be “weird and messy,” and for that reason, many of us look to astrology to help find answers to these perceptions.
“Our feelings can operate on a totally different level than the level we live in with our everyday selves,” says Comstock-Gay. “When you find yourself asking why something is bothering you so much or why you’re so hurt by something that should be fine, it can be helpful to look to our moon sign for answers.”
HealthyWay
iStock.com/Natnan Srisuwan

As a new mom, Amanda Renee’s invited moon signs to serve as a guide for supportive parenting. “Given that my son’s moon is in Pisces, he will always have a strong propensity towards inner reflection, being overly emotional at times and letting other people’s moods affect his, but with the help of my Capricorn moon, Pisces moon feels a strong sense of security, safety, and structure.”
“I can also help Pisces moon find a way of turning emotional intensity into financial gains or outlets of self-improvement and productivity,” she says. “Similarly, he will find it second nature to quench my task-oriented soul.”
[pullquote align=”center”]Water signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces tend to be a little more moody as they’re said to be ruled by the tides. Even if you or a loved one aren’t a water sign, your moon sign might be.[/pullquote]
“We share a special harmonious bond that makes it easy to collaborate,” she says.
She also notes that a better understanding of moon signs can contribute to clarity, especially when it comes to romantic compatibility. If you’ve ever felt the mild (and hopefully fleeting!) trepidation of discovering that you and your mate or love interest aren’t a match because of your sun signs, your moon signs might tell a very different story.
[sul title=”How Moon Signs Relate to Your Horoscope” subheader=”What to Read and When”]
Along with the sun and rising sign, the moon is one of the most powerful forces in a person’s astrological chart according to Comstock-Gay. For that reason, she says it is one of the most important to understand.
“When you’re reading your horoscope, most astrologers recommend that you read both your sun and rising sign to get a fuller sense of what to expect,” says Comstock-Gay. “Read the horoscope for your moon sign, too. It can be helpful to try to see if that’s useful for you.”
HealthyWay
iStock.com/scaliger

Comstock-Gay finds that the moon has a more mysterious influence on her than her sun or rising signs.
“The moon is so much more private, to the point of feeling hidden,” she says. “Even though it’s so close to the earth, most of the time we still can’t see its full face. The trick is just to keep paying attention to it, even if its lessons are less immediately apparent and accessible than the lessons from your sun sign.”
[sul title=”What can moon signs reveal about personalities?” subheader=”Maybe Your Darker Side is Running the Show.”]
Astrology isn’t a science, but astrologers believe that moon signs can reveal a lot about the emotional state of a person. Comstock-Gay is quick to point out that a person’s moon sign is not likely to reveal itself the first time you meet them. It may not even be apparent during your second or third meeting. Because of the moon’s sensitivity, whether or not that side of a person presents itself depends on where and with whom an interaction is taking place.
“The moon sign is much more internal and less outwardly visible than the characteristics of someone’s sun or rising sign,” she says. “The moon’s influence is always present, but it becomes most visible at home or in private. It can either quietly reinforce or quietly subvert some of the personality traits inherent to someone’s sun sign.”
HealthyWay
iStock.com/DragonImages

Those who believe in astrology also conclude that emotions—including what we are emotionally attached to—are strongly tied to moon signs.
According to Miller, the moon is connected to water signs, so it rules the tide, and it impacts each sign differently.
“That’s why Cancer signs tend to be a little moody,” says Miller. “If the dark sky has come out, you know in a minute that the sun will come out soon. Cancer signs have a changing landscape, and that’s what we love about them.”
The flip side of that? “When we decide to build a business or take on a goal that we are emotionally attached to, we do best with those because we really care all the way through our being,” says Miller “We are passionate, and that’s what gets you over the difficult humps as you are creating your dream into a reality.”
[sul title=”How much should your moon sign influence you?” subheader=”Here’s how Comstock-Gay and Amanda Renee find balance.”]
Moon signs, along with horoscopes and astrology in general, are not a step-by-step guide for living your life. Comstock-Gay says it is up to each person to decide how much stock they put into learning about moon signs, noting that astrology can expand or contract according to your needs.
“Some people use astrology for fun, and some people like to go deeper,” says Comstock-Gay, noting that astrology is not a literal predictor of what’s ahead.
HealthyWay
iStock.com/humonia

“A person may become more or less serious about astrology depending on their needs at the time,” Comstock-Gay says. “Astrology is not a predictor of specific events or of the future, but [it’s used] to understand feelings, emotions, and energies in the world.”
Amanda Renee concludes by saying astrology can be subjective. “Different astrologers will use their intuition and life experiences to convey meaning. This is what I love best about astrology: its artistic qualities.”

5 DIY Facials With Surprising Ingredients Your Skin Will Love

You make your own kombucha, bake bread, and upcycle furniture, and now you’re learning to sew; why not take it a step further and experiment with your own skincare?
Treating yourself to a relaxing facial doesn’t have to involve a trip to the spa (or putting a sizeable dent in your wallet). You’ll be surprised to learn that many common ingredients you have lying around in your pantry or fridge are actually incredible for your skin.
Feel like treating yourself but are low on beauty supplies? This article has all the expert advice you need to have fun creating DIY facial products while keeping it safe for your skin.

The Best Facial Ingredient for the Job

When it comes to concocting DIY facial products at home, experts agree that organic is best whenever possible. Rachael Pontillo, licensed esthetician and creator of the Create Your Own Skincare course, highlights the importance of using organic ingredients.

HealthyWay
Jernej Graj

“Pesticides in conventional products are damaging to many systems of the body, and many are also skin irritants. Much of what is applied topically gets absorbed, and we have so much evidence of systemic health issues linked to pesticides. Organic is always preferred, local whenever possible for freshness,” she says.
Remember that for the majority of the ingredients you’ll be using food-grade, not cosmetic-grade ingredients. To combat any potential cosmetic safety issues, Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist, research executive, and founder of Beauty Stat, has the following advice: “Manufactured beauty products are usually tested and preserved to confirm that they are safe for consumer use on skin.”
HealthyWay
kevin laminto

His advice: Store your DIY ingredients in the refrigerator to make sure they do not become contaminated by bacteria.

Proceed with caution.

It’s tempting to think that because an ingredient comes from your fridge or pantry it’s inherently safe to use on your skin. Jacob D. Steiger, MD, is a facial plastic surgeon based in Boca Raton, Florida, and is a firm believer in proceeding with caution when it comes to DIY skincare products:

“Natural” products not having any adverse effects on the skin is a very common misconception—especially when using clean skincare is a very trendy right now. There are many skincare products that may not necessarily be “natural” but come from natural sources. Everyone’s skin is different, and you can have a negative reaction to natural ingredients too. Like any product, natural products are only effective when used properly.

He also advises performing a patch test in a discreet area before applying any homemade facial products directly to the affected area.

HealthyWay
Tiara Leitzman

“No matter what skin type you have, you should always be careful with all DIY facial ingredients and skincare products. It’s always best to try a patch test first and see how your skin reacts to it before applying anything to your skin.”

Ingredients to Avoid

One drawback of making your own DIY skincare products based on recipes from the internet is that they often contain ingredients that can cause harm to the skin. Pontillo lists baking soda, crushed-up aspirin, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice as common ingredients to avoid. She cautions:

These common DIY skincare remedies can cause serious skin damage when applied full strength or even diluted—extreme dilutions are sometimes okay, though the desired effects will be diminished—because they can cause severe irritant reactions such as rashes, swelling, photosensitivity, sensitization, and even chemical burns due to a pH that is too high or too low.

The Facials That Pass Muster

Now that you know how to safely play the DIY game, consider whipping up these expert-recommended facial concoctions.

Papaya and Honey Mask

Em Surby, licensed esthetician at Mali Salon in Portland, Oregon, loves the gentle exfoliating and brightening properties of enzymatic fruits for at home facials.
Pineapple, papaya, and pumpkin are all good options,” she says. “With a natural enzyme, you get a nice, gentle exfoliation of the outermost layer of skin. A lot of professional products use fruit enzymes as well!”

HealthyWay
Lavi Perchik

This DIY facial recipe uses ripe papaya and a small amount of raw honey, leaving you with super soft, glowing skin. Pontillo raves about the benefits of using honey as an at-home skincare ingredient.
“I recommend raw honey for its antioxidants, hydration, and natural sugars and enzymes that cleanse, hydrate, and exfoliate without damaging the skin.”
HealthyWay
Jonathan Farber

This recipe makes enough for several facials and can be stored covered in the fridge for up to three days or in the freezer for three months (try freezing the mixture in ice cube trays and thawing them one at a time for an any-time-of-day facial).

Ingredients:

  • 1 papaya, seeds discarded
  • 1 Tbsp. raw honey

Method:

  1. Blend the papaya and honey until smooth or coarsely mash with a fork.
  2. Apply to clean face for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat skin dry.

Cucumber, Yogurt, and Aloe Mask

Fans of DIY facials will be pleased to learn that the carton of plain yogurt sitting in the fridge can be used for more than just smoothies and granola. Plain yogurt contains lactic acid, a skin-smoothing ingredient that’s well known for its impressive exfoliating properties.

HealthyWay
Silvia Agrasar

Cucumber and aloe vera, two of Pontillo’s favorite at-home facial ingredients, add an extra layer of skin-pampering protection. “Aloe is excellent for bring hydration and antioxidants into the skin, while also cooling, soothing, and protecting irritated or blemished skin,” she shares. “Cucumbers are cooling and firming—great for reducing puffiness.”
Make this mask in small, single-use amounts as it can quickly turn watery if stored longer than a couple of hours.
HealthyWay
Ho Hyou

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp. peeled, grated cucumber (seeds removed)
  • 1 Tbsp. plain yogurt (Greek or regular both work well)
  • 1 tsp. aloe vera gel

Method:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together with a spoon.
  2. Apply to clean face for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat skin dry.

Tomato and Green Tea Toner

This gentle tomato and green tea toner is a one-two punch approach to DIY skincare. For starters, it’s a natural source of alpha hydroxy acids.
Steiger explains: “My favorite natural ingredient to use in facials and other skincare products is alpha hydroxy acids. They are a group of natural acids found in foods including citric acid (citrus fruits), malic acid (apples), tartaric acid (grapes), glycolic acid (sugar cane), and lactic acid (sour milk and tomato juice).”

HealthyWay
John McArthur

The toner’s green tea, another one of Pontillo’s favorite ingredients, offers a variety of benefits to the skin. “I recommend green tea because it is rich in antioxidants—primarily EGCG—theanine, which is an amino acid, and has sun protective and restorative benefits, as well as anti-inflammatory and firming benefits.”
HealthyWay
五玄土 ORIENTO 王杉

Use the best green tea you can find for best results (loose leaf from a source with high turnover is ideal). Store this toner in a small spray bottle in the fridge for up to one week.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe tomato
  • 1 cup of freshly brewed green tea, chilled

Method:

  1. Remove all of the watery juice from the tomato, pressing it through a fine mesh sieve to extract as much as possible.
  2. Whisk together the fresh tomato juice and green tea.
  3. Store in a spray bottle and apply to face directly or with a cotton ball after cleansing and before moisturizing.

Super Vitamin C Mask

This unique DIY mask is one that Joshua Ross, celebrity esthetician from West Hollywood’s SkinLab, loves to use on his clientele.
For a DIY vitamin C mask, mix powder/crystal L-ascorbic acid, which is pure vitamin C, with a little bit of virgin coconut oil,” Ross says. “Leave on for five to seven minutes. This mask is really great for brightening, [addressing] sun damage, and [promoting] hydration.”

HealthyWay
Tomas Salas

L-ascorbic acid can be purchased online or found at natural food stores and pharmacies.

Oat, Honey, and Chamomile Mask

This super calming face mask contains three of Caleb Backe’s top five DIY skincare ingredients (the other two are ginger and aloe vera). A health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics, Backe is a big fan of the effect oats have on your skin.
“Oats are a great exfoliant for sensitive skin, and their emollient properties make them a great moisturizer. What’s more is that they’re a cleanser containing antioxidants, so they won’t strip the skin of its natural oils.”

HealthyWay
Andrea Tummons

Continuing with the theme of tea and facials, chamomile tea is used in place of water to soak the oats.
“A strong anti-inflammatory, chamomile is the ingredient you’re looking for to soothe irritated skin,” Backe says. “It also has excellent healing abilities as it’s rich in antioxidants and can increase the penetration of other skincare products.”
Finally, honey (which was mentioned by almost all the experts featured in this article as a powerful DIY facial ingredient) is also an effective way to bind all of the ingredients in this recipe together.
HealthyWay
Chinh Le Duc

Backe goes on to say, “This thick ingredient is a great emulsifier in any facial treatment and the benefits are numerous. It moisturizes the skin deeply, brightens complexion, as well as lightens scars.”
For best results, use instant oats for this mask; they will form a uniform, thick paste that won’t fall apart as you’re applying it to your face.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tbsp. instant oats
  • ¼ cup chamomile tea, chilled
  • 1 Tbsp. honey

Method:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. Once the oats have absorbed all of the liquid, apply the paste directly to clean face and let sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Always remember: Safety first.

Making your own skincare products is empowering, fun, and inspiring. Who knows? Your hobby could turn into a lucrative opportunity if it becomes something you’re passionate about.

HealthyWay
Katherine Hanlon

When you’re experimenting, always remember that everyone’s skin is different and that your own skin’s needs can fluctuate depending on where you are in your monthly cycle. Always do a patch test and use the best quality ingredients you can source; your skin will thank you for it.

The 16 Ultimate Packing Hacks Every Traveler Needs To Know

For travelers, nothing is quite as invigorating as heading to the airport for a big adventure they’ve been planning for months, if not longer. Packing that suitcase, however, can be the opposite of exciting. Few things are more nerve-wracking than making sure you have everything you need, carefully folding each garment to avoid a wrinkled nightmare when you arrive at the hotel, and, of course, squeezing every last item into a tiny carry-on bag. After all, who has time to wait around for checked bags these days?

HealthyWay
iStock.com/LuminaStock

Packing can be a drag. So what’s a jet-setter with a serious case of wanderlust to do? For starters, she gets savvy. There’s a certain art to packing a bag. It starts with staying relaxed while stuffing that suitcase full. It definitely requires organization throughout the entire process. But to truly take your packing skills to the next level, you’ll need to learn a few tricks of the trade. Here are 16 travel hacks that will send your luggage-packing anxiety, er, packing.

1. Use a packing checklist.

It’s all too tempting to just grab a bunch of your favorite outfits, toss them in a bag, and call it a day. But inevitably, you’ll end up overpacking while simultaneously missing essential items, which is the worst of both worlds. A packing list can help make sure you bring along everything you could possibly need—nothing more, nothing less.
Ideally, you’d create a custom packing list to fit your exact needs. For example, if you can’t live without a stash of chapstick, your moisturizer, and your lucky hat, better add them to your list! Until you’ve got your own list locked down, though, a pre-made packing checklist can help you stay on track. It’ll remind you about the clothes, personal hygiene products, and accessories that belong in your suitcase, and give you reassurance that nothing important is left behind.

2. Try packing cubes.

It’s a fact: Your carry-on bag will never be as spacious as you need it to be. And those overhead bins aren’t getting any larger! You’ll need to condense your belongings down as much as possible to make sure everything fits in a couple of tightly packed bags. Fortunately, packing cubes seem to make the impossible possible when it comes to packing a ton of stuff in a small space. Roll your garments and tightly squish them in each cube, working to squeeze out as much air as possible.
A large packing cube can contain a week’s worth of clothes, while still leaving you plenty of extra space in your suitcase. Plus, they help you stay organized at the destination. Each cube acts as its own “drawer” when you unpack and can keep your dirty and clean clothes separated. Once you start using packing cubes, you’ll never go back to tossing stuff directly into your suitcase.

3. Bring a mini steamer.

Everyone has their own technique to avoid wrinkling their clothes in a suitcase. Some roll their garments, while others swear by tucking each item between squares of tissue paper. But no matter what, your clothes are going to end up with at least a few creases—it’s the nature of being stuffed into suitcases for days on end. That’s why stylish travelers also throw a portable steamer and iron into their luggage.

HealthyWay

These little gadgets weigh almost nothing, take up a minimal amount of suitcase space, and work far more effectively than that dingy old iron in your hotel room. Plus, a portable iron can help your outfits look pristine in minutes. They’re perfect if you’re taking a business trip, heading to a destination wedding, or just want to look your best, wherever you are.

4. Get foldable clothes, shoes, and accessories.

If you’re racking up a lot of frequent flier miles every year, it’s worth investing in some travel-friendly clothing. You may have noticed what a pain it is to lug around a big, heavy coat, or how impossible it is to pack one. A packable down jacket that squishes into a handy pouch is just what you need to stay warm without the added bulk.
Think about your shoes, as well. Footwear can eat up an enormous amount of suitcase space—if you let it. A pair of foldable flats is just what you need to save space without compromising your style. You’d be surprised at just how many foldable items are available for travelers. They even make foldable headphones that you can stash in the smallest bags!

5. Buy reusable travel containers.

You never know what kind of amenities will be available at your hotel. It’s safe to assume that soap, shampoo, and conditioner will be on offer—but will they be any good? Many travelers prefer the peace of mind that comes with packing their own toiletries from home.
Rather than shelling out for those overpriced travel-size versions of your favorite products, invest in a set of TSA-approved silicone travel bottles that you can refill over and over again instead. They slip into any carry-on bag with ease. And, having access to the amenities you already know and trust when you’re on a trip is like a little taste of home. Pop them in a resealable plastic bag and you’re good to go!

6. Power up while you’re on the go.

The most ubiquitous feature in today’s high-end suitcases is a built-in phone charger. It makes sense—who couldn’t use some extra juice when they’re scrolling through social media as they wait to board a flight? But even if you don’t have a fancy bag, you can still recharge your batteries on the go with a portable power bank.
Many of these devices can completely refill your iPhone battery three or four times on a single charge. There’s nothing like finding out your smartphone battery is dead when you want to snap a pic of a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Fortunately, portable chargers are a lifesaver when you’re traveling in remote areas (say, hiking in the jungle or taking a safari).

7. Print is dead, go digital instead.

Books and travel go together like peanut butter and jelly. Travelers rely on guidebooks to help them find the best places to eat and sleep in a new city, wind down from a busy day of sightseeing with a story in their hotel rooms, and get lost in novels while they sunbathe on the beach. However, books are heavy and bulky, which is not ideal when you’re trying to pack light.
An e-reader is one of the smartest investments traveling bibliophiles can make. They can store thousands of titles in a device that weighs as much as a single paperback novel. Plus, if you finish up a book or two and still crave more literature when you’re on the road, you can just download a fresh novel and dig in, wherever you are.

8. Use a handbag with lots of pockets.

Airlines generally let you bring a rolling carry-on bag, as well as a “personal item,” like a handbag or backpack—and smart travelers take advantage of every inch of allowable space. Finding a handbag with a lot of pockets is one of the best travel hacks for jet-setters who want to stay organized on a flight. Nothing’s worse than digging around your bag on a cold, dark airplane when you’re trying to find your hand lotion.

A handbag with lots of compartments allows you to create a dedicated space for each of your essentials. Some even come with pockets specifically designed to hold crucial items, like your keys, passport, sunglasses, and wallet. There’s nothing like the peace of mind that comes with knowing where to find every last item in your bag.

9. Tiny containers are your best friends.

When it comes to travel hacks, tiny containers are incredibly versatile tools. They can store all kinds of things that you probably want to travel with. While you might never think you’d need a contact lens case if you don’t wear contacts, it’s worth investing in one or two. They’re the perfect size to store the tiniest bit of moisturizer, toothpaste, or even perfume. And if you thought pill organizers were solely reserved for travelers with medical needs, think again.
These convenient cases can store your necklaces, earrings, small cables, and other items that might otherwise get lost or tangled. You’d be surprised at just how useful these cases and organizers can be for carefully storing small items in a big suitcase.

10. Pack a quick-dry towel.

It’s always a good idea to have a towel in your bag when you go on a trip. Sure, your hotel might have one—but what if you take a spontaneous trip to the beach, or go camping? You’ll definitely want your own. While those plush terry cloth towels you have in your bathroom might be soft and snuggly, they take up too much room in a suitcase.

Invest in a microfiber travel towel, instead. Favored by athletes and travelers alike for its ability to absorb moisture really quickly, this kind of towel also has another valuable feature: It dries super fast. Just hang it out on a balcony, drape it over a chair, or toss it on a tree branch, and it can dry in roughly 20 minutes. There’s no risk of a gross, mildewy towel stinking up your bag and making everything damp.

11. Put dryer sheets in your bag.

Speaking of a stinky bag, don’t be surprised of you get a whiff of something less than fresh when you’ve been traveling for weeks on end. Between your dirty laundry, the strange places you’ve stored your bag, and everything else that comes with having an adventure, you’re bound to experience an odor at some point when you unzip your suitcase.

It’s wise to pack a few aromatic dryer sheets in a resealable plastic bag to fend off strange smells. Not only can they make your clothing smell like it just came out of the wash, dryer sheets can also be used to deodorize a musty hotel room, reduce static electricity, freshen up a rental car for a road trip, or mask the lingering smell of a room-service breakfast long after you’ve finished your eggs and toast.

12. Personalize your luggage.

What color is your suitcase? Let us take a wild guess: It’s black. Pretty much every traveler has a run-of-the-mill black bag. That’s fine, until your bag goes missing and you need to tell a hotel clerk or airport agent what to look for when searching for your suitcase. Finding ways to help your bag stand out from the sea of other black suitcases is a particularly smart travel hack.
Try buying a distinctive luggage tag to dangle off the handle of your bag. Look for one with bright colors, unique shapes, and fun designs so you can recognize your suitcase right away. Suitcase stickers are another way to make your bag stand out. May we suggest travel-themed stickers that convey your passion for exploring the world?

13. Separate your in-flight necessities.

You know how airlines are super strict about how many bags they let you take on board the plane? We get it—there’s limited space available. But sometimes you just need one more bag. That’s why it’s worth popping a foldable reusable grocery bag in your carry-on luggage. It’s the perfect place to stash your in-flight essentials, like a snack, chapstick, a book, your phone, and your headphones.

Board the plane with two bags and when you get to the seat, pull out your reusable grocery bag and store the rest of your luggage for the duration of the flight.

14. Use a jewelry organizer.

Traveling with jewelry presents its own set of challenges. Obviously you want to store things in as small a package as possible, but nothing’s worse than finding a tangled rat’s nest or broken jewels when you reach for your favorite necklace. A jewelry case can help you keep all your precious trinkets safe when you’re far from home.

15. Get a universal travel adapter.

Experienced travelers don’t have the time to fumble around with an assortment of power adapters, trying to figure out exactly which one they need for the country they’re planning to visit. Instead, they pack a universal travel adapter. These nifty devices can help you fit your electronics into outlets in more than 100 countries.

The extra USB outlets on the travel adapters will also come in handy when you want to charge multiple devices at one time. Having access to power wherever you are is one of the most useful travel hacks you can adopt.

16. Always pack a sarong.

Travelers, meet your new best friend: the sarong. You may already have one of these garments left over from a beach vacation, but trust us when we say they are useful for so much more than throwing on over a bathing suit.
These make the best blankets when you’re freezing on an airplane, can double as a towel when you forgot to bring one, stand in as a blanket for an impromptu picnic in the park, and become a fashionable dress for beaches and resorts. You can also tie them up to create a little pouch for your gear. Once you see how useful it is to have a sarong on a trip, you’ll never travel without one again.
